erlin kicks off the New Year in glamorous yet simultaneously down-to-earth style. From the 14th to around the 19th of January, the fashion world pitches its tents in Berlin. The occasion? Fashion Week, which twice a year brings together designers, buyers and celebrities in the capital: famous labels such as Anna Sui, Diane von Furstenberg oder Michael Kors showcase what designers have in mind for the coming autumn/winter. We present individual fairs and locations in more detail, and tell you where the best parties are taking place (page 34). Another big highlight in Berlin is the Berlinale in February: Over the past fifteen or twenty years, Berlin has developed into a young, cosmopolitan metropolis that is increasingly putting international film and showbusiness stars under her spell. Some of those celebrities first got to know the city on the river Spree at the Berlinale, which this year is taking place for the 64rd time. Every city has its own little rules and peculiarities. Berlin, too.

There are a couple of things that are typical of the German capital – and we’ve compiled a list of them just for you: Scheese When a Berliner uses the word “Scheese” (meaning “banger”) as a term of endearment for his car, this is a reference to the French word “la chaise” (chair), with a movable chair being meant in the figurative sense.

The real “Scheesen” are the old Trabis, the legendary East German car model, in which tourists can now take a fantastic tour of the city.

What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far?

The overnight transport of a trade fair stand weighing 250 kilos from Berlin to London. The stand was left behind at our hotel by the real courier, but it needed to be in London the next day. I sent the stand via night drive/ferry and managed to have it delivered within 12 hours to the hotel in London where the guest’s conference was being held.

In 1988, the Transmediale was merely a side event of the Berlinale’s “International Forum of New Cinema” section. At the time it was known as the “Video Film Festival”. Today it is the best-known media arts festival in Germany, a flagship for contemporary culture. Year after year, links are forged between art, culture and technology. This year, the Transmediale explores the “afterglow”. This moment represents both the positive and negative after-effects of drug use, and also the strongest moment of twilight when the earth‘s dust rises into the atmosphere and is lit up for a brief moment. The Transmediale is using this moment as an allegory for the current state of digital culture, between digital revolution and the future, in which media technologies have also become waste products - a state between “trash” and “treasure”, illuminated through exhibitions, performances and discussions. On the opening day around 70 hackers from 15 countries will collaboratively create an instant exhibition over 48 hours, to which the Transmediale output will react with exhibitions.

1945, figurativeness has more or less been scorned. That the human body however still plays a role is shown in the “Body Pressure” exhibition in Hamburg train station. As well as the aforementioned “Shithead”, we can see 23 more works from 1960 to today which are dedicated to the human form – at times extremely realistically.

The beloved Lady with Shopping Bags by the American Duane Hanson is so casually placed in the exhibition that viewers initially think she is a visitor, and want to call out to her: “Hey, you have to hand over your bags!”

The most important press photographer in post-war Germany had an unerring instinct for the right moment and made photojournalism an art form. Art in the bunker: The Boros Collection This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre-high specimen of Chinese bog wood.

by Chinese painters and calligraphers from the collection held by the Museum of Asian Art.

In 1993, a gallery owned by Ben and Hannes Kuckei was founded in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with the name “vierte Etage”. In 1998 it moved to Mitte and was renamed “Kuckei + Kuckei”. The Linienstraße gallery is still there, and has been promoting new photographic talent for years. The exhibitions are across two floors.

The name: “Angelina, Angelina!” resounding over and over again from the entrance of the Nobel Hotel Grand Hyatt. Anyone who goes for a walk in Potsdamer Platz in February can witness this mysterious spectacle: it’s Berlinale time again. Of course we are referring to Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, one of many international stars and filmmakers who for the last 64 years have descended on Berlin once a year in the hope of

winning a prize from the Berlinale jury, one of the popular Golden Bears. “Apart from the Berlin Philharmonic or Museum Island, I would include the Berlin Film Festival as one of the city’s most prestigious cultural brands,” says Berlinale spokeswoman Frauke Greiner. “Every year 300,000 tickets are purchased by the public”, she says, and enthuses: “What makes the Berlinale special is that it is both an important industry event and a huge public festival” Also huge is the range of films on offer under the directorship of Dieter Kosslick: in addition to the international competition, there are

Fashion from Berlin Made by women for women Berlin is on the cusp of becoming a regular fixture amongst the fashion capitals. asn’t black-andwhite cinema ever in colour? When did the first “Oscar” come to Berlin? How does a steamboat get into a museum? Answers to these and many other questions about the history of German film posed by young visitors aged eight and upwards are provided during a guided tour of the permanent film exhibition. The tour, which begins in the Museum of Film and Television’s Mirror Hall, tells the story of the colours behind black-and-white film and the glittering costumes of Marlene Dietrich. The journey of discovery leads from the flipbook films of cinema pioneers, through classics such as

“Caligari” and “Emil and the Detectives”, to recent films such as “Perfume”. It has been developed especially for children and gives visitors many opportunities to touch, admire and understand. Here, young and old alike can explore the

the beetle – they also get to accompany the little group on their journey of adventure to the moon. Why the three are travelling there and what adventures they experience on the way is all revealed in this one-hour star show with views of the heavens.

He was considered the “new Nureyev”, the “Prince”, the “dancer of the century”, for some he was also: “The Flying Vladimir”. Ten years have passed since Ukrainian dancer and choreographer Vladimir Malakhov founded the Berlin State Ballet under the ‘Stiftung Oper in Berlin’ foundation, while he was its director. Malakhov, aged 46, is marking this anniversary by organising a ballet gala with an international dance elite before he leaves Berlin at the end of the season.

The gala programme has been a tradition for several years now.

Many aspects of ballet history are incorporated in this event, which last but not least is also a glamorous social occasion.

ince 2001, the Festival au Désert has taken place annually in the middle of the Sahara in northern Mali. It has now become one of the largest music festivals in Africa. During the course of political struggles in the region, the event has moved ever closer to the supposedly safe city of Timbuktu. Now, it has been transferred to Burkina Faso for safety reasons to Christoph Schlingensief‘s opera village

Since 1892 this building has played host to the most controversial directors. From Erwin Piscator in the 1920s to Castorf and Schlingensief in the 1990s. The technology and sometimes shocking scenarios particularly appeal to a young audience. It was also the stage for the 1989 political revolution.

››Komische Oper The second world war destroeyed the building almost completely, the hall, were the audience sit has been preserved. In the 1960s opera was performed for the first time in German in this Classical building. Walter Felsenstein produced it. This wine comes from their own vineyard in the Palatinate, as does the red wine, which you might like served with braised ox cheeks with chanterelles in chive sauce.

The restaurant has a wonderful location on the edge of the Landwehr Canal. In winter the customers are warmed by a tiled stove, while they feast on the celebrated duck, the quality of which is seldom found elsewhere in Berlin. There are also light dishes, such as cucumber spaghettini with warm smoked eel and pike caviar on the menu.

In summer you can sit under trees in the square and enjoy the full-flavoured Horcher wines form Herbert B ­ eltle – heaven on earth.

There is a true explorer is this kitchen: melons, one time as red jelly, then yellow as a compote, grilled Greenland halibut lightly perfumed with savoury ginger or Iberico pork on a bed of ­artichokes and topinambour ­puree – the customer should prepare himself for an exciting evening. The service is friendly and the predominantly German wine has been selected with great masterful know-how. The restaurant has the work of stucco artist, Biener, whose listed pieces are lovely to sit and marvel at.

Youth Theatre in Brandenburg

The Youth Theatre in Brandenburg that’s been operating for the last 30 years is now beginning to command attention beyond German borders. To a large extent, this success is due to actress Christiane Ziehl, who since 2001 has dedicated herself to promoting the theatre’s young amateur actors. The result is lively theatre art that thrives on the freshness, fun, passion and curiosity of its young performers.

Since 1990, the “Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde” (Fans of Berlin Railway) club has been running museum trips on the southern section of the “Heidekrautbahn” (Heather Railway) that’s not used by passenger trains. Passengers travel by steam trains, railcars and other vehicles of yesteryear.

The trips set off from the provisional stop of “Märkisches Viertel” on Wilhelmsruher Damm, not far from Berlin-Rosenthal train station. Getting on board one of the 1920s carriages gives a sense of what travelling by train was like in the past as you sit back on the comfortable wooden benches or padded seats.

A pear tree with a history The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem. A new tree has been planted to commemorate what is probably the most famous pear tree in literary history.

During the GDR era, there was a “forbidden city” located in the town of Wünsdorf which was reserved for the military. After reunification, the site fell into disrepair – until the book lovers moved in, that is. Today, thousands of valuable books from the past and present tempt visitors to the forest town to browse and buy. A veritable “booktown” has been created here, based on the example of the British town of Hay-on-Wye located on the Welsh-English border. Visitors who want to learn more about the Wuensdorf area’s 100 years of military history will also find something to interest them. The town has a museum on the subject, with guided tours of the huge bunker systems.

Live like the Slavs In present-day Lower Lusatia at the western and southern edges of the Spreewald forest, 50 ringwalled castle complexes were built during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. The builders were members of the Slavic Lusizi tribe, who had lived there since the 8th century. A model reconstruction of these complexes can be visited at Raddusch. The diameter of an original Slavic castle measured 38 metres inside and 58 metres outside, with the castle surrounded by a 5.5-metre wide u-shaped ditch. Access inside the 7-metre high walls was via two tunnel gates. Enjoy an excursion into the distant past.
