Every city has its own little rules and peculiarities. Berlin, too. There are a couple of things that are typical of the German capital – and we’ve compiled a list of them just for you: Scheese When a Berliner uses the word “Scheese” (meaning “banger”) as a term of endearment for his car, this is a reference to the French word “la chaise” (chair), with a movable chair being meant in the figurative sense. And what do you reply? I ask them about what they have in mind, and then I suggest a programme that is tailored to each guest. What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far? The overnight transport of a trade fair stand weighing 250 kilos from Berlin to London. The stand was left behind at our hotel by the real courier, but it needed to be in London the next day. I sent the stand via night drive/ferry and managed to have it delivered within 12 hours to the hotel in London where the guest’s conference was being held.

In 1988, the Transmediale was merely a side event of the Berlinale’s “International Forum of New Cinema” section. At the time it was known as the “Video Film Festival”. Today it is the best-known media arts festival in Germany, a flagship for contemporary culture. Year after year, links are forged between art, culture and technology. This year, the Transmediale explores the “afterglow”. This moment represents both the positive and negative after-effects of drug use, and also the strongest moment of twilight when the earth‘s dust rises into the atmosphere and is lit up for a brief moment. The Transmediale is using this moment as an allegory for the current state of digital culture, between digital revolution and the future, in which media technologies have also become waste products - a state between “trash” and “treasure”, illuminated through exhibitions, performances and discussions. On the opening day around 70 hackers from 15 countries will collaboratively create an instant exhibition over 48 hours, to which the Transmediale output will react with exhibitions. 1945, ﬁgurativeness has more or less been scorned. That the human body however still plays a role is shown in the “Body Pressure” exhibition in Hamburg train station. As well as the aforementioned “Shithead”, we can see 23 more works from 1960 to today which are dedicated to the human form – at times extremely realistically. The beloved Lady with Shopping Bags by the American Duane Hanson is so casually placed in the exhibition that viewers initially think she is a visitor, and want to call out to her: “Hey, you have to hand over your bags!”

rankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung readers have already seen many images produced by Barbara Klemm, who worked for the newspaper from 1959 to 2004. The most important press photographer in post-war Germany had an unerring instinct for the right moment and made photojournalism an art form. It wasn’t just politicians who came under the scrutiny of her lens, but also artists such as Mick Jagger.

The sculpture is behind thick glass. But in this case it’s more to protect the viewer because Marc Quinn’s work is made 100 per cent from his own excrement. “Here you can claim with impunity that this art is shit,” said one critic’s review. Since

painting Chinese scholars, painters and calligraphers have been giving people their essays, poems, calligraphy and paintings as presents and as expressions of friendship for years. They bestowed these gifts on colleagues, family members, students, teachers or those close to them. This exhibition highlights this particular way of looking at paintings and calligraphy using selected masterpieces by Chinese painters and calligraphers from the collection held by the Museum of Asian Art.

In 1993, a gallery owned by Ben and Hannes Kuckei was founded in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with the name “vierte Etage”. In 1998 it moved to Mitte and was renamed “Kuckei + Kuckei”. The Linienstraße gallery is still there, and has been promoting new photographic talent for years. The exhibitions are across two floors.

The name: “Angelina, Angelina!” resounding over and over again from the entrance of the Nobel Hotel Grand Hyatt. Anyone who goes for a walk in Potsdamer Platz in February can witness this mysterious spectacle: it’s Berlinale time again. Of course we are referring to Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, one of many international stars and filmmakers who for the last 64 years have descended on Berlin once a year in the hope of

winning a prize from the Berlinale jury, one of the popular Golden Bears. “Apart from the Berlin Philharmonic or Museum Island, I would include the Berlin Film Festival as one of the city’s most prestigious cultural brands,” says Berlinale spokeswoman Frauke Greiner. “Every year 300,000 tickets are purchased by the public”, she says, and enthuses: “What makes the Berlinale special is that it is both an important industry event and a huge public festival” Also huge is the range of films on offer under the directorship of Dieter Kosslick: in addition to the international competition, there are

Berlinale in the ‘hood Berlin scores huge points as a film city thanks to its versatile cinemas. Fashion from Berlin Made by women for women Berlin is on the cusp of becoming a regular fixture amongst the fashion capitals. Ten years have passed since Ukrainian dancer and choreographer Vladimir Malakhov founded the Berlin State Ballet under the ‘Stiftung Oper in Berlin’ foundation, while he was its director. Customers can enjoy refined German and Austrian cuisine on the edge of the Gendarmenmarkt. How about tatar from young bull filet with sourdough bread as a starter? The restaurant has a wonderful location on the edge of the Landwehr Canal. In winter the customers are warmed by a tiled stove, while they feast on the celebrated duck, the quality of which is seldom found elsewhere in Berlin. To a large extent, this success is due to actress Christiane Ziehl, who since 2001 has dedicated herself to promoting the theatre’s young amateur actors. The result is lively theatre art that thrives on the freshness, fun, passion and curiosity of its young performers.

Since 1990, the “Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde” (Fans of Berlin Railway) club has been running museum trips on the southern section of the “Heidekrautbahn” (Heather Railway) that’s not used by passenger trains. Passengers travel by steam trains, railcars and other vehicles of yesteryear. The trips set off from the provisional stop of “Märkisches Viertel” on Wilhelmsruher Damm, not far from Berlin-Rosenthal train station. Getting on board one of the 1920s carriages gives a sense of what travelling by train was like in the past as you sit back on the comfortable wooden benches or padded seats.

A pear tree with a history The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem. A new tree has been planted to commemorate what is probably the most famous pear tree in literary history.

During the GDR era, there was a “forbidden city” located in the town of Wünsdorf which was reserved for the military. After reunification, the site fell into disrepair – until the book lovers moved in, that is. Today, thousands of valuable books from the past and present tempt visitors to the forest town to browse and buy. A veritable “booktown” has been created here, based on the example of the British town of Hay-on-Wye located on the Welsh-English border. Visitors who want to learn more about the Wuensdorf area’s 100 years of military history will also find something to interest them. The town has a museum on the subject, with guided tours of the huge bunker systems. Events are held on a regular basis.

Live like the Slavs In present-day Lower Lusatia at the western and southern edges of the Spreewald forest, 50 ringwalled castle complexes were built during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. The builders were members of the Slavic Lusizi tribe, who had lived there since the 8th century. A model reconstruction of these complexes can be visited at Raddusch. The diameter of an original Slavic castle measured 38 metres inside and 58 metres outside, with the castle surrounded by a 5.5-metre wide u-shaped ditch. Access inside the 7-metre high walls was via two tunnel gates. Enjoy an excursion into the distant past. Berlin Carnival fans take note: on 2nd March 2014, the biggest carnival parade in eastern Germany will wend its way through the centre of Cottbus, with 4,000 participants, bands, horses and floats.
