ANJA POULSEN

The creation of Bwatt issue 5 happened during a life changing time and path for me. During this time I went on a journey, by myself, to Cape Town in South Africa to feel, think and to be inspired by something other than the cold winter of Denmark. I had already had the pleasure of shooting our coverstory with the amazing and beautifully spirited Kelly Osbourne, but I was still looking for the right voice and visuals to carry the message of Bwatt’s mantra of “sharing inspiring eyecandy for our readers”. I really couldn’t see it coming from me this time, because I was feeling so different inside in this intense time in my own life. Well, that sure changed the day I landed in South Africa. The nature, the people, the diversity, the creativity and the desire to spread love was so intense and beautiful, it overwhelmed me, and slowly the inspiration naturally came flowing. The voice I after all did find in me, the voice of Africa, so inevitably and without a doubt Bwatt magazine issue 5 had to ooze of this love of the african feeling. It has manifested in our amazing interviews with mindblowing creatives and cool projects in this issue. All you have to do is sit back, take it all in and let it inspire you too. In this time of change and growth for me, as a natural extension the same happened in the identity of Bwatt as well. What naturally manifested was that our Bwatt mantra suddenly grew in to something more and something physical as well… The Bwatt t-shirt was born. First edition is with the powerful message of: “ I don’t try I do.” I decided to make an effort to support these amazing people that I had met on my journey and to also work towards supporting different cool projects around the world, that inspire todays youth to believe in themselves and their passion in life. So for Every t-shirt we sell, we give 25 percent to Organizations and Projects that work towards a better future for the youth of today, and the rest of what is earned will support the amazing creatives who work for free to make Bwatt happen. This time we have chosen the cool African organisation SATEC (all members of the organization are creative kids; skaters, bmx’ers, dancers, music composers, designers etc from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds). They will be traveling around Africa to inspire young kids to believe that they can do anything they dream off, no matter what or where they come from. Read the inspiring article inside this issue, to learn more about these amazing kids. So, dive in, enjoy my journey here in Bwatt #5 and help spread out our magazine to every corner of the world, so we all can support what we believe in most of all — That everybody has the right to spread their creative wings, inspire and fly…

Interview by Line Givskov

Her love for Africa. I spend my very first ‘conscious’ years in Kenya, where my father worked as a doctor, in a tiny village near the Lake Victoria. I was still very young, but I still have very vivid memories from that period of my life; you experience everything for the first time, so I guess those impressions made a kind of ‘blue-print’ in my head, it’s like the programming of your Hard-Disk. In the year 2000 I met my now-husband, and we started traveling to Africa together again; he’s also Dutch, his father was a doctor who was working in Africa as well, so he was born in Zambia when his parents were stationed there and later moved to Tanzania with his family. These mutual backgrounds made us curious; we wanted to show each other the places of our childhood, and we were very interested in how Africa had developed over the years, exploring the differences and similarities between the daily life in modern Africa, and the sun-kissed exotic memories of our childhood. The weird thing is; every time we arrive in Africa, it feels like coming home, but at the same time you always realize that you will never truly be part of it; you always remain a stranger. When I returned to Africa I was already a photographer, so it was natural for me to examine my thoughts and feelings through the lens. First I spend a lot of time in the townships of South-Africa, where I was totally taken by the extremes and vibrancy on all different levels. I was very excited by the way young people were designing their own lives, taking charge, by creating their own language, music and fashion. At that time, the way I was photographing was very much in a documentary style. It was only after I went back to East-Africa, that I started staging my pictures; probably influenced by the strong memories and the vivid dreams I had at night. I guess I felt that I was suddenly drawn back in time, and the irrational, magical thinking of childhood suddenly came back, somehow... And that’s exactly what I love about Africa; it gives me the freedom to leave the linear, logic thinking of the West behind, it opens doors in my sub-consciousness, which I love. The stories she chooses to tell. I’m always very much aware that there is not just one truth. Therefor I easily distrust opinions. That’s also why I choose not to be political. I think that Doubt is very much underestimated; it’s a beautiful thing. It makes you think and not take things for granted. I think the best pictures are the ones which make me aware of the fact that I don’t Know. The ones which don’t give themselves away easily, the ones which raises more questions then gives you answers. I strive for this ambiguity, these paradoxes, in my own work. Of course I don’t always succeed, but it’s driven by curiosity. Her choice of colors. I simply love color. How can you not love color? But the light, the landscape, the people themselves, are much less vibrant in the Netherlands then in Africa. It’s another climate, it’s as simple as that. On the other hand; there’s a lot of color-blocking in Dutch Design; if you think of the Stijl; Mondriaan, Rietveld; all Dutch. Somehow I’m often drawn to those primary colors. I also feel that colors have their own identity, and that’s what I play with. A blue face tells us something very different then a red face. Her creative process. I never know what I’m going to do before hand. I lead myself by my intuition; there’s not much else I can say about it. I always carry a sketchbook. Sometimes an idea just pops up in my head like a soap-balloon. Sometimes I see

something on the street, a gesture, a pose, an object. Sometimes I wake up in the morning with a picture in my head. And sometimes I just stumble upon a beautiful tree or a dead donkey. A walking dog will find a bone; you have to keep moving. Which is not always easy in my daily life; it is much easier while traveling to unknown places, new territories. The people in my staged pictures are often neighbors, friends, family of friends & acquaintances, people I meet during my travels. We always talk about the pictures first, I show them my sketches, my ideas, other pictures I made previously. I explain my intentions, my thoughts, and the dialogue starts there. It’s a collaboration between them and me; it’s a very delicate process because it has a kind of intimacy, which is very pleasurable for both of us. If I feel it’s lacking the mutual joy of the process, I stop. It’s like a dance, very playful but serious at the same time. The people I photograph are very much aware that they are playing a role; a character in a kind of ‘private performance’. Of course there should be a mutual trust. I’m always very aware of the fact that I’m the one carrying the camera ,which can be a tool of power and control. I’m also very aware of our cultural and often economical differences. Therefore I feel that I have to ‘protect’ my models, and treat them in the way I would like to be treated myself. I reward them for their work, I send them pictures, and we often stay in touch through e-mail, Facebook, mobile phone, the same way I do with models from Europe ore anywhere else. When their pictures are out there in the world, I’m responsible. In the end it’s me who has to decide what’s ethical and what’s not, without being paternalistic. Trying to be truthful in my own subjective way that I see the world.

BWATT ISSUE 05

This story of the Satec Organization began in the early part of 2014, when Editor in Chief, Anja Poulsen, was in Cape Town working, and with her natural curiosity wide open, she had her first encounter with members of the organization; a group of lively and cool young south americans, some used to be homeless, others from very poor families, but all rich within their craft as either dancers, skaters, designers, graffiti artist etc. Mesmerized by the enthusiasm, the story and the beautiful match of inspirational purpose, likewise Bwatt Magazine, to inspire youth today to believe in their talents, creativity and the necessity to follow their dreams, an inevitable story of joint forces had begun. Being founded in South Africa, the main focus of the Satec Organization is the youth of Africa. In their own words their mission is to be the biggest, best, most diverse, professional, youth uplifting and empowering organization within the Republic of South Africa and beyond its borders. Their aim is to reach out to countless multi racial/ cultural and disadvantaged/impoverished young people, to train, educate and empower, through the organizations diverse projects within visual and performing arts, sport, entrepreneurship etc. They are inspired and driven by their belief that all people possess both value and potential and that all children of South Africa and each and every other global child, has an equal right to a smile and an opportunity to reach for a dream and to turn a dream into reality, regardless of race, creed, circumstances, fortune, social background, culture, religion, age, sex, physical and mental ability or disability, or state of health, and to be recognized as potential leaders of tomorrow. The work of the Satec Organization is already way under way in South Africa and soon they will begin a quite unique journey that will start in Cape Town, journey through Africa and Europe and end in London, UK. Due to the political instability in different regions, the date of when this journey will begin is unfortunately still uncertain. But it will be a Guiness World Record attempt as they will be crossing the continent of Africa via roller blading, skate boarding, long boarding and on BMXs. They will be making stops in small villages and countrysides of Africa with the mission to speak to the youth, to teach them to become dream releasers, rather than dream killers. To help them unite, to see and develop their talents and inspire them to believe in themselves and follow their dreams, to success! Further more the goal is to create awareness of the dire situation of the fauna, flora and natural environment of Africa and the challenges it faces nowadays. It is going to be an incredible journey, with an important message, that we are truly looking forward to follow and support. Another great initiative is Africa´s first annual youth lifestyle and entrepreneurship expo, that will be held in Cape Town starting this year. This expo is for young and potential entrepreneurs to network, exhibit their product and showcase their talents with the purpose to create new employment and empowerment to countless unemployed young people in Africa. Meet some of the incredibly inspiring young people of the Satec Organization here. Please visit their facebook page (www.facebook. com/SATEC.org) for more information and to give your support.

Age: 19 Skill: BMX

Age: 20 Skill: Public Speech/Writing

Age: 19 Skill: Dancer/break dancing

How did you join the organization? I was browsing in town and Peter came up to me and asked me about my hobbies and those things. He explained to me about Satec and immediately I wanted to be a partof it.

How did you join the organization? Funny story, I had just gotten off my train at Cape Town Station when Peter, our chairman, suddenly stops me by asking random questions like; what do you do, what do you study, whats your dreams, etc. At first I didn’t have a clue what was going on, frankly, I thought it was a setup of some kind.

How did you join the organization? I decided to join Satec because I was given the opportunity to go after my dream and achieve my personal goal to become a professional dancer.

Tell us about your work at Satec? I would like for others to get in into more group activities and to be part of organizations because it´s a very good way of meeting people with skills and talents. Satec, especially, is helping me with everything I need in the field of BMX and the greatest thing is I have a good friend of mine who are also part of Satec. What would you teach others through the organization? My hopes and dreams for Satec is basically to get people from around the world with different skills and talents together to display their skills. What’s your dream? I would really just like to stay a part of Satec and just help and give input in any way I can towards this organization, so that we can all reach a common goal. I also just would like to say it is basically a blessing to be a part of the Satec organization and I am thankful that I am part of something great.

Tell us about your work at Satec? My work with Satec is to uplift the communities and get the youth inspired by what we are doing as a youth organization. To show them that drugs isn´t the way to go because most of these kids have so much potential but are not given the chance to express it. Therefore Satec is the way to go. What would you teach others through the organization? Satec contains a variety of talented young people and what we as an organization can teach others is to believe in themselves to achieve their dreams and goals in life and be successful. What’s your dream? My biggest dream is to see Satec organization as a world leading youth organization operating around the world. It should inspire big and successful companies to join Satec, in partnership, to uplift the world and youth to become united once again as a whole.

Alverique Neethling Age: 21 Skill: IT Engineer/Social Entrepreneur How did you join the organization? Well I was at a two day Millionaire Marketing Strategy seminar of JT Foxx, the world’s #1 wealth coach, serial entrepreneur and real estate investor. After this event was done I headed home and got on a train and sat down. A guy walked past me and then came back to ask if I was at this JT Foxx event as well. I told him yes I was. Tell us about your work at Satec? I am there to assist with the computerized equipment and figure out ways to operate easier through the technology we have today. We live in a connected economy so I like to find ways to make things work faster and quicker, as I am a person who likes to get things done quick and properly and not talk a lot (a little understatement from my previous response. What would you teach others through the organization? I would like to teach each and every person that is willing to learn, how to be Financially Free and to follow their OWN dreams and not work to make someone else’s dreams come true so that you can have freedom to do what you like to do. Like we do it in the SATEC Organization. We do what we Love. What is your biggest dream?I want to be financially free by the age of 24 — 25 and want to travel the world and be free.

The name Bwatt Magazine is inspired by our saying, “Be What you want in Fashion and in Life” What do these words mean to you? I feel like that is my fashion mantra! Fashion is what you make of it. I am a strong believer of the expression ‘you think there for you are!’ fashion allows you to become what ever or whomever you want to be. You are known to be one of the most real and open people amongst the celebrities today, the fact that you had a very lovely honest energy, was one of the things Anya told me about you, is that something you are aware of and work towards? And is it something you value most about other people as well? I never want to become what I call an untouchable celebrity. You know the kind that have an entourage of 50 unnecessary minions that no one is allowed to make eye contact with. My mouth is my biggest blessing as well as my biggest curse. At the ripe age of 29 I have learnt a few things. Number one is that people do not like honesty. What little self-editor or inner monolog I have tends to get me into a lot of unintentional trouble. I truly go into everything I do with the best intentions. Half the time the shit that comes flying out of my mouth I don’t even mean to say out loud. I suffer from verbal diarrhea! What can I say that’s just me! I believe I am the kind of person that people either love to love or love to hate there is no middle ground when it comes to me. For god sake that’s the way I even feel about myself. I annoy myself a lot so trust me I get it. Whatever preconceived notion anyone may have about me does not bother me at all. I love to laugh and have fun so I try to live each day as if it is my last and be as honest and kind as possible. I have a huge heart and an even bigger conscious. I

try every day to be a better person than I was the day before. However I sometimes fail. Life is about making mistakes it’s the only way we learn. Relish your mistakes if you fuck up try again life is one great big test. As cliché as it sounds its all about positivity. Honesty and positivity are the two things I value most in all my relationships weather it be my family, friends, or colleagues. I wont surround myself with counterfeit people. My father always told me growing up ‘if you hang around shit you leave smelling like it!’ On that note, how is it being that open and honest a girl, in the spotlight of it all, and in a business where a strong build facade is more common, I could imagine that it can feel quite vulnerable at times as well, is it a vulnerable and challenging place to be sometimes? Like I said before people do not like honesty so I would be lying if I said being a big-mouthed honest girl in the spotlight is not miserable at times. The media plays a huge roll in this. Gossip rags and blogs love creating fictitious celebrity feuds to sell more subscriptions. It’s really not fun to hear rumors about you that are untrue and feel like everyone believes them. You have got to have a thick skin and a bloody good sense of humor about yourself in the land of Hollyweird or it will chew you up and spit you out. Luckily through trial and error I have developed both. In the end of the day its night! People are going to say or think what ever they want. I know how I am and I know the truth so that’s all that really matters! On the positive side to my brutal honesty I have fucked up so many times in life and experienced more then most do in 50 lifetimes. There is nothing more gratifying then when someone tells me that through reading or watching an interview of mine where I shared my mistakes and experiences it gave them the motivation to change there lives in some way for the better. It’s an incredible feeling to know that you have helped someone just by being honest. Being a busy working girl, open and honest as you are, how do you nurture that young woman in you? to keep being real and true to yourself ? I am so lucky to have been born into as well as raised in this industry. I have seen all the smoke and mirrors and I have watched the rise and fall of many including myself. I call myself one of the lucky ones. Not many people get a second chance like I did. Trust me when I say rebuilding all the bridges I burnt was not an easy task. It took a lot of hard work in fact I am still rebuilding some of them. Although Hollywood is a ‘serious’ industry you cant take it to seriously. Having said that you can’t take it for granted either. People would literally murder someone for just one minuet of fame. Let alone the 15 minuets that most ‘celebrities’ get if they are fortunate enough. In life people tend to forget that you meet the same people on

the way up as you do on the way down. I make it a point to treat everyone equally. For example I would act no different whether I were having tea with the Queen or pizza with a bum. When so much good happens in your life it opens up the door to bad or the gates of Hell, as I like to call it. There is no ying without a yang. No matter how hard you worked for your success make no mistake it has been gifted to you. Just as fast as you received your gift it can be taken away. When it’s all said and done all you really have in life are your family and friends and even they don’t last forever. I am so fucking lucky to live the life I lead filled with a loving supportive family and amazing friends who keep me in check. My life is overflowing with breath taking experiences. I get to work with some of the most incredible artists, writers, and business minds of our time. I love my life and do not take it for granted. In the blink of an eye it could all be gone. That is why it is imperative that you stay true to you. The only person I can be is me. Just like the only person you can be is you. People don’t realize how much effort it takes to be someone else. It is nauseatingly tedious trying to be someone you are not regardless to the fact that it makes you miserable. I find it extremely interesting how most people spend there entire lives striving to be anyone other then who they really are only to wake up one day filled with regret and faced with the harsh realization that life could have been so much more fulfilling if they lived life on life’s terms. As ludicrous as it sounds It’s so much easier to find the confidence and learn to just be you. You have been through some quite challenging times in your life. Been close to losing yourself, your mother and your father. How have you managed to come out stronger on the other side, and how has these challenging life experiences shaped you into the person you are today? For so long I sat back and said to myself ‘why me? Why did I almost kill myself with drugs? Why did my mum almost die from cancer? Why did my dad get into a motorcycle accident that almost killed him? Why does my brother have Multiple Sclerosis a disease of which there is no cure? Then I sat back and really thought about my life I realized that this is just life. I would be an ignorant brat to think I was the only person in the world facing challenges like this. It’s all about what you can learn from the obstacles we face in life. For example watching the women I love most in the world my mum survive cancer after being told she most likely was not going to make it! She taught me to be a fighter, that a smile can be the best medicine, to live every day as if it’s your last, that family is all that really matters, and that love is the only true thing that lasts forever. After my fathers accident he finally stopped using drugs and alcohol. It has been a bumpy road but he is stone cold sober and has become a better person, husband, and father then I could have ever dreamed for. As for jack well he is my hero. Only two months after

First of all tell us about your Cover shoot for Bwatt Magazine in LA with photographer Anya Poulsen? She told me it was such a pleasure working with you, tell us about your day of shooting? Anya was incredible to work with! She made me feel really comfortable, as I still get nervous before and during photo shoots. We got along really well plus she shoots so fast. I love it when a photographer knows exactly what they want and how to achieve it. I also appreciate that Anya prefers to use natural light. It is so much harder to get the perfect picture but when you get it right it makes it all the more perfect. The natural light really allowed her to capture some magic moments. All in all it was a very mellow shot. No one had any ego. We listened to fun music in a downtown 1960’s building à la clockwork orange that over looked the whole of LA. As we were wrapping up the sun was starting to set and it filled the room with beautiful shades of orange, yellows, and pinks. To sum it up it was a really fun creative day with really fun creative people!

becoming a father to my perfect niece Pearl he was diagnosed with M.S. Some days he can’t see or feel his legs but still he gets out of bed everyday and faces it head on. He has taught me that nothing can stop you if you don’t give up and with the right attitude anything is possible. Pearl is our family’s miracle not only is she the reason that keeps jack motivated because if it was not for her I don’t think jack would be coping with everything as well as he does. Pearl has brought so much light and love to our family. All good comes from bad its all about how you put it into prospective. You have two choices in life you can become a victim of your own circumstances spending your life saying ‘why me?’ or take a step back and ask yourself what you can learn from your situation. You are very positive, bubbly and with a contagious laugh, what makes you happy in life, what makes your heart bubble with joy and what makes you laugh? I think my favorite thing in the world to do is laugh and there is so much that makes my heart bubble so to answer you question I made two lists. Things that make me laugh… Anything perverse or humorously inappropriate, Joan Rivers, farts, my dogs, my family especially Pearl, I’m very ticklish, karma, instant karma, family guy, my friends, the awkward situations I get myself into, hypocrisy Things that make my heart bubble with joy… Designing my fashion line, fashion, starting a new creative project, music, singing, working so hard I could fall asleep standing up because I love what I do, my family, London, making someone’s day. Tell us about your work at the Fashion Police, what do you love most about this job? Joan Rivers is what I love most about my job. I get to go to work every week with an icon that paved they way for strong opinionated women not just in the world of comedy but the whole world. I laugh my ass off from the second I get to work to the second I leave. We are all really good friends and get in trouble all the time for not paying attention while we are filming because we are all having so much fun. I get paid to talk about fashion it’s the best job ever! Tell us about your clothing line in the making/on the drawing board? Or how far are you in the process? and what is the concept of it all? I can’t tell you too much or I will get in trouble. Here is what I can tell you. I wanted to understand and learn as much as I could before I started designing so I spent almost 10 years doing so. I learnt all about manufacturing, fabrics, pattern making, and so on. In doing so I realized that most clothing lines only go up to a US size 12 when the average size for women in the US is a size 18. This angered me and made me want to design a clothing line for every woman. The

sizes will range from 0—24. No design will go into production if it does not look good on size 6 girls as well as the size 24 girls. The price range will also not change with the size. I find it despicable and so mean that clothing companies raise the price of the garment up the larger the size gets. I wish I could tell you more I can go on and on about it but like I said I will get in trouble and I’m already in enough already. What inspires you in life? personally and creatively? I take inspiration from everything and anything! For example a lot of the colors and patterns that I am using on the fabrics for my first collection came from The it’s a small world ride at Disney land. What lies ahead in the life of Kelly Osbourne? What are your dreams and aspirations for the future, personally and career wise? Next year 2014 fingers crossed will be the craziest years of my life I’m writing a book, have two new TV shows coming out, I’m launching my fashion line, my secret project with my mum is launching world wide, my secret Disney project launches, and I turning 30! What more could I ask for. What are you most proud of from your journey of life so far? I am even alive today… at the risk of sounding narcissistic I think I’m most proud of myself. What is the best advice that has ever been given to you? or perhaps a saying or life philosophy you live by every day? Be yourself and never give up because anything is possible!

The name Bwatt Magazine is inspired by our saying, “Be What you want in Fashion and in Life” — tell us what these words mean to you? Fashion can be to follow all the trends and walk out of vogue, that does not appeal to me. I love individuality, I love unique, I admire simple timeless elegance with an edgy twist. I have always bought little but good everlasting pieces that easily flow from generation to generation. I still adore bringing out a few precious pieces from my mother and grandmother, so I hope my pieces will be enjoyed by my daughter and generations to come. I love that it is impossible to see the difference between a 1980 Kelly or Birkin and a 2014 one. I love that when I put on a favorite vintage Chanel coat, it could have been taken off the hanger yesterday. True fashion to me, is so very personal. In my job as the presenter of the Danish version of Americas Next Topmodel, I am often dressed in all the big designers and before the pieces hit the shops, but more often than not, the stylist will also use from my personal wardrobe and accessories as well, as I like to keep it personal and real. I want to stay loyal to me. I have never been someone who dressed from head to toe in one fashion look, it’s a mix and match of simple classical pieces from different times and generations. To be what you want is such an important task for any human being. To learn to listen and more importantly to really hear what your heart and soul think and feel can be difficult with the pressure from our families and from the world. True happiness comes from deep inside and only when we live our lives being exactly what we want to be, in whatever shape or form that is. I myself have always been a dreamer, I want to change the world.

In your own words how would you describe yourself ? Who is the young woman named Caroline, who opens her eyes in the morning and steps out into the world? When i was three years old I was sitting on the window ledge of my bedroom, on the first floor of my home in Denmark, with my best friend, telling him that if the birds could fly so could we. My fathers promise of ice cream in the kitchen put a stopper to that idea, thank goodness! The young woman who opens her eyes every morning is still similar to that little girl; nothing is impossible, whatever I put my heart to will happen, determination is key. I have a long list of adventures and projects that I want to achieve in my lifetime. One at a time I tick them off when accomplished. I love life, I’m grateful, so very thankful. I have three amazing heartwarming and inspiring children, who fill my life with so much joy. They truly put life into perspective. I adore my friends and family. I find my job so rewarding. I am so lucky that I am able to design and put my name on things that I love, to share affordable luxury, in the shape of my stockings (www.beautifullegs. dk), my perfumes and cook books. I enjoy my hobbies, particularly cooking with my children,

and we enjoy the arts, whether we are home being creative or going to the movies, theatre or making a concert at home. I am so fortunate that all my children are naturally musical and take great pleasure in excelling here as well. We also love to travel and to go on adventures. Next on the list has to be seeing the cherry trees blossom in April in Japan. And the food and the people, I can’t wait to experience that. Staying true to myself is something I make a big deal out of reminding myself to do, on a daily basis. I try to spend at least twenty minutes grounding myself, through meditation or yoga, which I find really helps me to stay deeply connected to my inner self. When out on a big official thing I breathe very very deeply and I always allow myself a few seconds to think and contemplate before I speak. I was very withdrawn for many years and refused as much as I could to engage in any public life. But with age and actually growing into myself as a woman, I am finding it more comfortable to share myself. I am so grateful to all my followers and I understand that they want to know me on many different levels. As a gesture of my gratitude to them, for their loyalty, I want to give them a little piece of me too. You have been through challenging and trying times in your young life as well. How have you managed to come out stronger on the other side, and how has these challenging life experiences shaped you into the person you are today? Yes I have been through many challenging times. I have been very fortunate though and met some great support along the way. A woman in particular who really helped me to heal some deep wound, inspired the finding of a very strong woman inside of me. I have always been a survivor and I have always naturally had a very positive outlook on life, because I really enjoy living and living to the full. I have learned so much, for example that pain can be turned into a powerful and positive lesson and turned around into something good. I’m very transparent and if there is a problem, I solve it. I never push anything under the carpet. I live in the moment as do my children, what a gift! I feel very humbled too. My life is amazing, and the challenges that I have had are what they are, and when everything is put into perspective it is nothing compared to so many others out there. I feel lucky, that I have learnt so much. We live in a world where there is so much suffering, child abuse, animal abuse, cruelty, hunger, famine and tragedy. I have the energy and desire to help, in whatever small way that i can. International animal rescue is a cause very close to my heart, helping children and young people who have lost a parent is a cause close to my heart, I am moved daily by what happens all around the world and I hope people will move closer and closer towards being good to each other and taking care of our wonderful planet.

You are very positive and bubbly, what makes you happy in life, what makes your heart bubble with joy? My heart bubbles the second I see my children every morning. My heart bubbles when I hear the birds sing, when I watch the way the sun shines through trees and flows through woods. My heart bubbles watching the way snow twinkles in sunlight and the sea sparkles in moonlight. My heart bubbles when my daughter and I sing pretty woman songs into water bottles. My heart bubbles when we have baked triple valhrona chocolate brownies and the first bite is so delicious. My heart bubbles when I am surrounded by friends and family. My heart bubbles with small every day miracles and I feel so grateful to The Lord. Life makes my heart bubble. Seeing an elderly couple holding hands, or a gorilla carrying her two babies, my heart bubbles when people are kind and gracious, my heart just bubbles quite easily and naturally.

Deeply touched am I by those who go out of their way to do good for others. I spent an amazing day a while back with a friend in Paris giving to the homeless. But to also spend the time talking to them and understanding why they had ended up where they were deeply touching and inspiring in fact.

What inspires you in life?, personally and creatively? I find my children very inspiring, they are so organic and real and a great reminder of pure innocence and intent. I find my friends very inspiring for many different reasons, some for their amazing partnership, others for their great parenting, others still for their amazing sense of adventure and extraordinary careers.

Tell us about your dreams and aspirations for the future, — with work? and your personal journey? I would love to start cooking on tv. I want to show people how easy it is to become healthier and happier without breaking their budgets or time available. I want to bring a little sparkle back into the kitchen and reveal how it is possible to overcome most ailments,

What are you most proud of from your journey of life so far? There is no doubt that I am most proud of my three children. It has taken me a long time but I am also proud of myself, for taking the chances that I have taken in my life, some big emotional risks. I am proud to be looking life in the eyes and dealing with it head on rather than running away. I am proud of my achievements in my career, but even more grateful to all the wonderful people I work with, who are also a great source of inspiration and joy. I am so proud of my friends, we share so much, I would be lost without them.

whether it be high cholesterol or depression through diet. And inspire to do that in your favorite dress that makes you happy, because it shouldn’t just be saved for a special occasion, every day is a gift. I would also like to continue making women’s legs fabulous with beautiful legs, and I hope to write a few more books too. What is the best advice that has ever been given to you? or perhaps a saying or life philosophy you live by every day? Sing like no one is listening, love like you’ve never been hurt, dance like no one is watching, and live like it’s heaven on earth.

10:41pm in Los Angeles on my bed with black sheets — because when I died my hair purple and it’s wet after a shower, it runs on my sheets! I’m learning two auditions. The role of an officer and the role of a Mongol Princess. I guess I’m gonna have schizophrenic dreams tonight. The last movie I did is “Hacker’s Game” by Cyril Morin. I have the lead role, playing a sort of punk computer hacker. It’s a love story between two hackers.

You are very positive and bubbly, what makes you happy in life, what makes your heart bubble with joy? The name B Watt Magazine is inspired by our saying: “Be what you want in fashion and life” — what do these words mean to you? It relates to being an independent woman. It’s my obsession; even more so since I moved to LA. That’s why I have a motorcycle license now. That’s why I’m wearing a hoodie for three days with “Surf Naked” written on it because it’s the most comfortable thing in the world. But I will make an effort tomorrow because I’m not a hippie and I will wear a cute dress with Roger Vivier heels — still comfortable. And the following day I will wear biker boots and round sunglasses like Yoko Ono. Ok so I’m what I want in fashion, what about life? I’m happy to be alive. I think I’m a reliable friend. I always do as I say. People can count on me. When and how did you find out you wanted to become an Actress ?, was it a childhood dream of yours? When I was little my father was constantly taking pictures of me. After he died a friend of his told me that his dream had been to be a director. I think subconsciously it put me in front of a camera! Why acting ?, what makes you choose and work with this form of art and this profession? My first relation to acting was on stage in drama school. I remember I felt warm and happy and useful on stage. You can move people, make them laugh and use your imagination. And the first time I was on set I felt like it was home for me. I love that everybody on set is part of the creation process, to serve the movie. Everybody is important: the director, the make up artist, the sound technician, the drivers… It’s like a whole family. In the line of your career what has been the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your career? It makes me laugh when people ask me about my career. I have so much more to do to claim I actually I have a career! Working with Spike Lee was a dream. Besides being a wonderful director, he is an amazing human being. I learned a lot working on his movie. I also had to train for fighting and martial arts with stuntmen for two months. It made me stronger. I deplore that girls are not taught how to defend themselves since their childhood. If I have a girl one day — who knows? — I will put her in a Taekwondo class. She’ll learn how to be a badass, instead of learning how to be cute and pretty. Much more useful! What part(s) within your journey of life has been a part of shaping you in to the woman you are today? (places you have lived?, people you have met? life experiences?) I lived in many countries when I was a kid because my father was a consul. Quebec,

Kyoto, Ivory Coast, then France. I think it gave me kind of a gipsy soul. Each time I would move to a place, I knew that I would leave everybody by the end of the year. It made sense that I felt comfortable with shooting movies all over the world. Also I buried — literally — several very close people in my family. I think it made me stronger. People die so easily. It made me think “Hurry up, realize your dreams!” What has been the most favorable, meaningful role you have had so far? Anything or anyone you aspire to work with in the future? A role that meant a lot for me was “Wolf” by Nicolas Vanier. It was my first lead role. I spent two months in Oriental Siberia in -50C weather. It was so beautiful. I learned how to ride reindeers or drive a sled with reindeers, and how to live in a tent. I was hanging with the local nomads. They were so generous. We couldn’t speak the same language so we would do impersonations and moonwalk on the snow. We found out that the three most famous personalities in the world were Michael Jackson, Madonna and Mike Tyson! From Who or What do you draw inspiration within your field of work? I’m attracted to powerful and funny women — I love men too! Don’t think I’m antimen! I think of warrior actresses or director such as Charlize Theron, Juliette Lewis, Lena Dunham, Tina Fey, Julie Delpy, Cameron Diaz (she cracks me up. When I’m depressed I watch one of her movies) RecentIy I baked a cake and I wrote “Girls” on it (for a girlfriend’s birthday) On Twitter I tagged Lena Dunham on it. I’m such a fan of her work that I could be her cake slave. She would send me a message with the kind of cake she would want and I would bake it for her immediately. Lemon meringue pie? Cheesecake? Chocolate fondant? W h e r e e l s e d o yo u p o s s i b l y d raw inspiration? What inspires you in life, that you bring back to your work as an Actress? Life is always inspiring. In many ways. It also brings a lot of drama, which I tend to avoid. Shit happens anyway. That’s why I’m in the entertainment industry. I want to be happy. Sometimes I feel like a horse wearing blinders, but it’s the only way to achieve more in what you love to do. What is the best ever advise that has been given to you? Spike always says “Tough Business”. He even gave us T-shirts with that slogan written on it. That’s what he says when somebody is complaining on set for example. Don’t forget that you’re lucky to do what you do, being in the entertainment industry or being an actor. Never take yourself too seriously. That’s what I do anyway. Every morning when I wake up, I laugh at myself in the mirror.

How did you get the idea for the windows story ?! On my first trip I had a strange feeling: I was incapable of taking photographs because everything I saw through my Hasselblad was familiar. The concept of taking pictures of local tribes without engaging and from a distance made me feel uncomfortable. There and then I had the idea to invert the dynamics of the encounter. Using my car window as a constant frame I found a way to readdress the portraits. For once these beautiful people were looking directly at me and not the other way around. How did you execute this beautiful story; connect with the tribes and create the setting around it? In Nairobi I put together a great team; a Kikuyu driver with immense knowledge of the most remote roads and villages, a Masai cook, a close friend with a passion for photography and the wild. We drove endless hours and encountered unique faces on the way: people carrying water, herding goats, collecting wood etc. During our travels we always stayed clear of tourist routes and camped out in the bush. At sunset we lit fires that would attract wondering natives from miles away. After sharing food and chatting through the night I would then proceed to take a portrait of them in the morning. I work with daylight (no reflectors, no flash) and spend most of my time observing and visualizing the composition before taking my photographs. The observation and knowledge of the figure as well as the attention to the details such as the positioning of the hands on the window frame was critical for me to ensure the constancy and fluidity of the Window series. It was very important to place the car at the right angle in order to guarantee a clean background with no reference of tree or bushes. I used the wide and vast open sky of pure white to help strengthen the composition. The actual photographic process was therefore very short. From my experience, when you deal with people in remote places, the magic and the power of mutual observation (in my case through the lens) exist as a fleeting moment and cannot be prolonged. In the end what makes the images truly come alive is the subjects´powerful gaze that captivates and mystifies the viewer.
