WELCOME Welcome to another issue of my8days.

In this issue we went to New York to talk with the inspiring Designer Camilla Stark about her career, her choices in life and her new exciting collaborations.

We went to Miami to spoil you with some colors in this cold season. We talked with Jewellery designer Mary lou about starting up her own brand and what made her take that step, lots of inspiration and finally we´ll bring you on a little WINTER ESCAPE to Cape town, so leans back and enjoy some free eye candy.

Camilla Staerk We meet up with the amazing designer Camilla Staerk and had an inspiring talk about her carrier and life in New York.

Tell us a little bit about how it all started for you and your first years as a young designer?

I was doing my Bachelor degree in Fashion with Textiles in London, and by the time I got to my final year I was determined that my graduate collection needed to become the start of my own brand. So I worked extremely hard that last year at college, trying to focus in on the core of what I was trying to express creatively and emotionally.

Approaching the final exams and show at London Graduate Week I showed my work to the renowned boutique Browns Focus, and they ordered the entire collection. I did not tell anyone this, but the buyer at Browns Focus let Hilary Alexander at The Daily Telegraph know, and so the day after show they ran pictures and a big article about the fact that I had sold my collection before even graduating.

That led to a phone call a few hours later from Fashion East, an amazing sponsorship initiative that was about to launch at the time.

Thus, a couple of months later I was a part of the official London Fashion Week, and had been enabled to develop a bigger collection with this sponsorship and to show as part of the Fashion East catwalk show, which all of the key International press and buyers attended, and a sales stand at the official fair was included in the Fashion East support as well. Orders were taken and show reviews were written, and that was how it started‌Like a surreal dream‌ And, I had / took no time to stop up and sort of take it all in. I was just running with it from then on, trying to make the absolute best with this initial attention, figuring out running and building a business, producing orders and delivering, raising sponsorship for the next collection and show..and repeat!

”A couple of months later I was a part of the official London Fashion Week”

When you started did you ever think you would end up in New York? Did you already at that time have a worldtraveller in your stomach?

Yes. I always felt that New York was my home, since the first time I ever visited as a teenager.

Later on, spending a few months as an intern here whilst still at college in London only confirmed the fact that I was and am completely in love with this city. That I had to be here eventually.

I am also grateful to have spent a decade in London, to have attended design college there, being pushed so hard creatively and encouraged to experiment. That time and the people I met are a very important part of me. They know who they are.

As for traveling, my Father used to take me along on business trips throughout my childhood. It affected me deeply, and I knew I was going to travel as SOON as highschool (gymnasiet) was done. I moved to Paris literally the day after. Followed by various other adventures abroad before settling in London for a while.

It is admirable and shows the true artist in you that you create and produce with the same strong element you have always done.

Where do you find the confidence and courage to stay true to yourself and your very personal style?

Thank you. Essentially, it is only by staying true to myself that I find the courage to keep pushing forward.

It is not always easy this way, at all, but I do not feel that I have a choice in the matter. It is something inside that needs to come out, and always did. I feel lucky and grateful that I have had the loyal following and support around me throughout the years, and from day 1. That means the world.

Is there some signature elements which is crucial for you in the design process?

Some tequila on the rocks and a deep dark soundtrack‌:-)

Do you think your designs are connected to your Danish heritage?

Absolutely, my heritage plays a part. But essentially I think it is a very personal mix of things that have made an impact on me throughout my life and that I have been and am translating into this visual language; Danish minimalism, film noir, erotic art and the haunted glamour of old Hollywood.

You seem to always do your own thing, but yet you have made some interesting design collaborations , how do you balance that process without compromising too much?

I find it so enjoyably challenging to do design collaborations. Because, it actually pushes you even further towards your own core every single time. How do I apply what I do to something else, pinpointing and celebrating the essence in both, into a new and merged signature product. It is such an interesting process, and the results can be very strong which is the whole point.

Tell us a bit about the collaboration with Helena Christensen, how did it all start and how is the actual process?

Helena and I met in the Summer of 2000, at Helenas beach house north of Copenhagen. I had just graduated and launched my collection in London, and Helena had just co-founded Nylon Magazine in New York. Nylon was doing a piece on me, Helena photographing me and the designs.

It marked the beginning of our collaboration, as we completely clicked creatively. A few months later we went to Prague together and created my first look book, doing everything ourselves from concept to casting, hair, make up and styling, and Helena shot the girls around the streets of Prague.

We would continue the collaboration throughout the years and in various formats, and eventually designing collections together such as a lounge wear capsule for the retailer Anthropologie and a jewelry collection for Skagen. Our creative partnership now spans over fashion, interiors, multimedia exhibitions and films. And has become a close and treasured friendship along the way too!

We have a creative language together, a merge of the two of us and our sensibilities, which just feels natural and easy, despite us being quite different at the same time. It is so fun, we always agree throughout the entire process, and it feels like such a gift. I can’t wait for what waits ahead and to keep creating together.

How do you honestly feel about fashion ? If it is a love_hate relationship, have you ever thought about giving up ? Quitting the business?

Fashion was my starting point, and I am happy about that. At the same time I always saw it as part of what I wanted to do and at times I have been scared that lack of time in such a consuming business, or the set-up I found myself in at times, would not allow me to expand. My vision and dream has always been to create across different categories and concepts and to explore a variety of media, and it fulfills me to feel this happening. The route to this point has been far from smooth, but I have always kept moving forward and stayed true to myself no matter what, and for that I am proud.

Which role does travelling play in your creative life ?

Traveling plays a large role in my life i.e.creative life. Having a base to come back to that I really feel in touch with and connected to is equally important to me.

What is success for you and where do you find inner peace in this wild world we live in today?

Being surrounded by friends, soulmates and family, offering each other inspiration, support, laughter and love through the good times and the bad. At the end of the day, love is all that matters.

Without love you are nothing.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your career?

Feeling as alive as the creative process can make you feel. Staying alive in the process.

What is the best advice that has ever been given to you in life in general?

Never give up.

What advise or message would you love to leave?

Never give up. Be open. Stay strong. Follow your passion. Be kind. Keep loving.

Marie-Louise Joensen Meet the talented jewellery designer behind MaryLou Jewellery.

Tell us about you, your brand and how it all started “I’m Marie-Louise I’m 29 years old and I have had a dream of being a goldsmith since I was 8 years old. One of my parents’ friends opened a jewellery shop in Lyngby. We saw my parents’ friends a lot so I came there very often and she taught me some different techniques.

Especially in the beginning of 2000, it was very popular making some sort of wrap bracelets, so I made these bracelets and earrings and started selling them in NoaNoa at our local mall and in different shops there.

In 9th grade I took a jewellery course and through high school I kept making jewellery. After high school I went travelling for two years, came home, and went to London to take a wax course in jewellery design. Then I came home and applied for the Metal School at Guldsmedhøjskolen, a part of Copenhagen’s Technical School, and I came in.

I had heard that it was a good thing to apply there before applying for the Goldsmith education.

Before I finished Metal School I applied for the Goldsmith education and I came in - so I didn’t finish the Metal School, but I finished the Goldsmith instead. During that time at school I opened my company even though it was not a

big success, I earned money. I kept on doing it instead of getting an internship, and decided to be autodidact.

”I have had a dream of being a goldsmith since I was 8 years old” Then I helped Sophie Bille Brahe with her pearl collection at Christmas and I was part of a small workshop/ collective thing at Ryesgade where we were six different designers having our own brands. Here I met Julie, my friend, who I now have a shop with. We decided to get our own little workshop and started in Tullinsgade.

We worked for a year, during that time I had twins and worked. When the twins were a half year old a sublet shop was for rent and we decided on jumping into it. We built everything in two months and opened, which is almost a year ago.

Now I’m making jewellery every day and loving it and juggling the kids /family life together with my independent jewellery shop.”

Why jewellery?

“It is because I’ve always been really fascinated by jewellery and by dressing up and down. I’ve always, cliché, lent my grandmother’s and mom’s jewellery. In the old days it was clips earrings so when I was a child I worked with earrings because I thought they were so nice.

I think jewellery make so much sense for me. More than the clothing industry in a way, because I don’t believe in collections and season based items.

I think there is too much waste in it. So instead I would much rather make timeless pieces you can use at all occasions, all year round and for many years.

I also think it is because of all the magic you can do with gold and silver which is why I only make things in pure gold and pure silver - I don’t oxidize or gold-plate anything.”

What inspires you when creating your pieces? ”I’m inspired by the oriental world, and all the colours - I can’t live without colours. But I’m also split in my mind because I have this big sense of order on one hand where I really like tidiness and everything should be in a straight line. On the other hand, I live in this chaotic world/ universe where it is full of mixing colours and different sorts of patterns and everything.

I say the oriental world because I think for me it’s this dreamy fairy tale where there is a mix of everything. I try to make my jewellery a mix of both worlds - the Danish-friendly, Scandinavian more streamlined style and the dreamier one.”

Describe your brand with three bullets “Feminine, dreamy and with a twist.”

”Feminine, dreamy and with a twist”

What are your dreams for your brand in the future? ”That’s a really good question. I’ve thought a lot about this, the last half year. I made the decision to get a Peer company. My dream started out with me as a jewellery designer, goldsmith and making everything from A to B. I can see now that I am more and more busy, which is really nice, but I can’t do all of it at the same time, while being a mother, friend and a girlfriend.

I would like to always have a shop of my own,

make the designs and always make the first design, but perhaps getting someone else to produce them for me. I’m also juggling with the idea of getting some parts made somewhere else - so instead of five hours per piece it would take one hour. I hope this is going to be possible within some years and also getting sold at lots of different places.”
