PAINTING FROM NATURE 7 MAY – 20 JUNE 2011

JOHN SHARMAN

PAINTING FROM NATURE An exhibition by multi-award winning artist John Sharman. For Painting from Nature, John captures traditional realist images of the Australian ocean, earth and sky. Exhibition Opening and meet John on Saturday 7th May, 2011 from 2pm Exhibition runs until June 20.

Born in Sydney in 1947, John Sharman’s interest, like most practising artists, began in childhood, pursuing drawing and painting and slowly developing his perceptions of what he was seeing. An opportunity in the Shoalhaven area in 1977 led to an association with an artist who introduced John to ‘en plein-air’ painting using the dark wash technique. Sharman turned to full time professional art practice in 1980 after coming to grips with the technique, and he set about finding what nature had to offer, honing his perceptions and abilities to capture it in all its moods. He became part of a group of artists that included Robert Simpson, Doug, Casey and Ritchie Sealy, Robert Wilson, Warwick Fuller and Allan Fizzell. Painting in a realist manner on the edge of impressionism, John strives to make every element an equally important part of the finished work. He is adamant that to successfully capture facets of nature it must be carried out ‘in’ nature, not in the studio. For him, ‘feeling’ is just as important as ‘seeing’.

In the past 27 years Sharman has earned many accolades, and his prolific success in Regional Art Awards finds his work in municipal, corporate and private collections in Australia and internationally. Among those awards are the Peter Stuyvesant Cultural Foundation Award (4 times), The Caltex Art Award (3 times), the Rothmans Foundation Award and the Junee Art Award on seven occasions. John’s new exhibition continues his longtime multi-level affair with the Pacific Ocean and the meeting places between ocean, earth and sky. As an active surfer, he enjoys an innate knowledge and relationship with the coast, but also continues to make forays into regional hinterlands and the outback. A number of images in this exhibition are drawn from visits to such places as Broken Hill, Condoblin, Bugaldie and Jindabyne. STAN D’ARGEAVEL MA (VISUAL ARTS) EXHIBITION COORDINATOR
