From the Editor

October! The weather is cooling off. Schools are off to a good start. People are decorating for Halloween and kids are working on their costumes. This month in SB Magazine, we are featuring two stories: one is heartwarming; one is heartbreaking. The first is about the Willis Knighton NICU, a doctor, a nurse, two mothers, and two premature babies. I don’t want to give away the ending, but I know you’ll love the outcome. The second story would be the perfect Halloween tale if it weren’t true. It’s about the murder of a young mother-to-be and a door to remind us how evil people can be.

October is also an issue that we are privileged to feature northwest Louisiana’s medical community. SB Magazines’ annual Top Doctors and Dentists issue has been your go-to guide for finding a doctor quickly. This year’s edition is no exception. Sure, finding reliable medical care may seem easy with the internet’s online directories. But with SB, you’ll get to know your doctors and their staff better as you see their pictures and read about their backgrounds and philosophies. We have also posted a comprehensive list of the doctors, dentists, and other medical professional who received votes from their peers and their patients.

We hope you enjoy this autumn weather and all that this issue of SB Magazine brings.

Why retirement isn’t like the summer holidays

Many of us have recently returned from our summer holidays — they’re a time to relax, unwind, and escape the daily grind.

For many of us, they’re the only time of the year we get to sit back, fall asleep in the sun and completely switch off. It’s no wonder, then, that many of us dream of the day when we can leave our jobs and finally embark on that endless summer holiday — otherwise known as retirement.

However, while the notion of a perpetual break might sound appealing, retirement isn’t quite the same as an endless summer holiday. In reality, it requires careful planning, both financially and emotionally, to help ensure it’s a success.

The myth of retirement as an endless holiday

The idea of retirement as a neverending holiday is logical, but it's also misleading. Holidays offer an opportunity to recharge before returning to our regular lives. Retirement, on the other hand, is a permanent transition into a new phase of life.

Unlike a holiday, where our time off is finite and focused on getting away from it all, retirement can be a complex mix of leisure and the need for continued purpose and engagement.

Often new retirees can feel unprepared for this. While initially

they might enjoy escaping from the commute, from workplace politics, and meetings about meetings, many new retirees find themselves adrift once the novelty has worn off. Many miss the sense of identity and purpose that a job brings; others mourn the camaraderie of being part of a team or group.

These unexpected changes can have a detrimental effect on health and wellbeing. One often quoted statistic says that retired people, especially those in the first year of retirement, are approximately 40% more likely to experience a heart attack or stroke than those who keep working. What’s more, almost one in three retirees say they feel depressed – a rate higher than that of the adult population overall.

The phases of retirement So, what’s the solution? Thinking about retirement not as one single event, but as a journey through various phases, each with its own challenges and opportunities, can help you understand the emotions that might lay ahead:

1.The honeymoon phase: This initial phase of retirement is often marked by excitement and a sense of freedom. This phase can last from a few months to a couple of years.

2.Disenchantment:

The next phase is often where the idealized vision of retirement collides with reality. Without structure or goals, many retirees find themselves feeling lost or even unhappy during this phase.

3.Reorientation:

This stage is crucial for establishing a new sense of purpose and direction. New hobbies, activities, volunteer opportunities, or part-time work can provide you with that sense of accomplishment and fulfilment you’ve been missing.

4.Stability: Finally comes a stage of stability. This is when you’ve adapted to your new lifestyle, established a routine, and fully embraced a balanced mix of leisure and purposeful activities. How to transition to retirement

The secret to successfully transitioning into retirement is preparation. Thinking about how you might move through each retirement ‘stage’ can help you anticipate challenges, set realistic expectations, and create a plan that ensures a fulfilling and meaningful retirement. This plan is designed to sit neatly next to your financial plan:

1.Define your purpose:

Consider retirement as the start of a new chapter that offers opportunities for personal development. Have a think about what gives your life meaning, outside of work – what have you always wanted to do, but haven’t had the time or opportunity? Think about how you can incorporate these elements into your retirement lifestyle. Whether it’s volunteering, pursuing hobbies, or spending time with family, having a sense of purpose is vital for emotional wellbeing.

2.Establish routines:

While the freedom to do as you please is appealing, having a routine can provide structure and prevent feelings of aimlessness. Think about designing a plan at the start of the week that balances practical chores and activities you love doing.

3.Stay connected:

Having strong social ties is essential to emotional wellbeing. Especially for men who, research shows, tend to have fewer social networks and social support compared to women in retirement. Joining clubs or groups and developing relationships with friends and family can help to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. While the idea of retirement as an endless holiday is appealing, it’s essential to recognize that it’s very different from two weeks away in the sun. It’s a significant life transition that requires thoughtful planning. By understanding the different potential phases of retirement and preparing for your emotional needs, you can ensure satisfying retirement journey.

a Transitional Style Home with Precision and Passion Crafting

This new-construction home overflows with timeless architectural details and classic furnishings, perfectly melding personal significance and divine inspiration.

In the bustling world of home design, where trends evolve at a dizzying pace, finding a residence that stands as a true reflection of its owners’ vision can be a rare achievement. For Jeff and Christiana Lyons, their home is not only a testament to architectural craftsmanship—but also a personal expression of

comfort and belonging. Located in Shreveport’s Whispering Path at Southern Trace, the Lyons’ residence is a masterclass in transitional architecture—a style that harmoniously blends classic elements

with modern sensibilities. Designed by architect Bennett Sebatier and his firm Sebatier Architecture, LLC, the home embodies a seamless fusion of timeless design and contemporary comfort. His design

approach ensured that Jeff and Christiana’s vision was translated into a structure that feels both fresh and enduring—the perfect match for the family’s future aspirations.

Sebatier believes the beauty of transitional design is that it offers a bridge between the traditional and the modern, creating spaces that are both familiar and innovative. For the Lyons’ home, it was about finding that perfect balance—where every element feels intentional, and every detail contributes to a cohesive whole.

The journey from inspiration to reality was as much about preparation as it was about the overall

design and the end product. Jeff and Christiana’s initial foray into the world of home design began with a deep dive into Pinterest and Instagram, scouring images that resonated with their ideal vision. Their initial choice was a striking, transitionally crafted home in Charlotte, NC, and served as a springboard for their architectural blueprint. With Sebatier at the helm, the design began to slowly evolve into something uniquely suited to the couple’s family-oriented lifestyle.

Crafting a Sense of Place

Every corner of the Lyons’ home bears the mark of meticulous craftsmanship, thanks in no small part to homebuilder Wesley Thomas. Known for his unwavering attention to detail, Thomas brought

an exceptional level of dedication to the project. His commitment ensured that the home was not only aesthetically pleasing, but also built to the highest standards of quality and durability.

“Wesley Thomas’ role in this project was pivotal,” says Jeff Lyons. “His ability to translate our dreams into a tangible reality while maintaining an extraordinary level of detail was remarkable. Every nuance of the design, from the custom cabinetry to the natural wood elements, reflects his expertise and passion.”

The home’s interior spaces are a celebration of natural light and open, airy layouts. The decision to use white oak flooring throughout, complemented by neutral walls and rugged

reclaimed wood beams, creates a serene and inviting atmosphere. The front façade’s expansive windows, which have earned the home the affectionate nickname “The Glass House,” flood each room with natural light, reinforcing the couple’s goal of a space that feels both invigorating and peaceful.

A Symphony of Design, Functionality and Faith

The collaboration didn’t end with Sebatier and Thomas.

The Lyons enlisted a team of specialists to perfect every aspect of their home. Interior designers Kristen Kirk and Hannah Beth Smoak worked their magic to create spaces that are both functional and beautiful. Meanwhile, Christopher Randel from The Cottage curated the windows, doors, and appliances—ensuring a seamless integration of style and performance. Throughout the home, thoughtful design choices

create spaces that are both functional and inspiring. The master bedroom boasts a huge window overlooking Japanese maples and the pool, while the master bath features heated floors and a stunning tile mosaic

in the shower.

At the heart of the home lies a kitchen that would make any chef envious. The centerpiece is a massive island topped with exquisite quartzite, surrounded by custom white oak cabinets stained slightly darker than the natural white oak floors for subtle contrast. “The kitchen is where I spend a lot of time,” Jeff explains, “so it had to be both beautiful and functional. The customized cabinetry and clever design choices make cooking a joy.”

The great room, with its impressive 16’ x 10’ bi-fold door, exemplifies the home’s connection to the outdoors. This feature allows the living space to extend onto the patio, making it an ideal setting for entertaining and relaxation.

The attention to detail extends beyond the physical structure—

it permeates every aspect of the Lyons’ lifestyle within their home. From the cozy den with its fireplace—a winter haven where Christiana keeps a roaring fire—to the serene master bedroom overlooking the pool and Japanese maples, every element has been thoughtfully designed to enhance daily living.

Purpose, Community, and Faith

For Jeff and Christiana, the home’s design and functionality were deeply intertwined with their personal faith and community values. The Lyons’ desire to create a space that was not only a family home but also

a welcoming haven for friends and neighbors reflects their commitment to a Christ-driven project. Their home serves as a venue for bible studies, gatherings, and heartfelt hospitality.

“We love hosting events for our friends and family,” Christiana shares. “So, we approached every decision, from the overall design to the smallest details, with prayer and the intention of creating a space that would be a blessing not just to our family, but to the community as well. And we wanted to build a place where people could come together, feel welcomed, and experience the warmth of our

home.”

“None of this would have been possible without our faith guiding us every step of the way,” Jeff explains. “It was essential for us that this home reflected our values and our faith. We truly believe that this project was guided by God’s grace.”

Christiana, nodding in agreement adds, “this wasn’t just about creating a beautiful house, it was about building a home that would glorify God and serve as a place where His

love could be shared with others.”

A Beacon in Whispering Path

Today, the Lyons’ home stands as a shining example of what's possible when innovative design, expert craftsmanship, and a strong sense of purpose come together. It embodies the spirit of Whispering Path—a neighborhood that prioritizes connection and community.

As the sun sets over this beautiful home, casting a

warm glow through the expansive windows, it’s clear that Jeff and Christiana Lyons have created an architectural triumph—a living testament to the power of collaboration and faith that is full of love and community. Each day, Jeff and Christiana are reminded daily of the profound grace that guided them through every step of the process. In a world that often feels disconnected, the Lyons’ home serves as a reminder of the beauty and importance of creating spaces that bring

people together. This house is not just a residence, it’s a beacon of hope, inviting all who enter to experience the warmth of true community and the transformative power of thoughtful design.

The following individuals and companies supplied consulting, products, and materials for the Lyon’s home: Architecture— Bennett Sebatier, Sabatier Architecture, LLC; Construction—Wesley Thomas, Wesley Thomas, Inc.; Interior Design— Kristen Kirk and Hannah Beth Smoak; Windows, Doors, Appliances—Christopher Randel, The Cottage; Flooring and Lighting—Mary Oates and Laura Bray, House of Carpets; Pool and Aquatic Services— Steve Evans, Waterscapes Landscaping—Mike Hoogland, Hoogland’s Landscape; Cabinets—Zach Toms, Custom Bilt.

It doesn’t actually say that anywhere in the Bible, but Cha’Neal Caldwell and the gals at Cinder’Ella In Disguise Cleaning Service seem to live that saying every day.

In addition to the routine residential and commercial cleanings Caldwell’s crew offers, they are also part of ISSA Charities initiative to provide cancer patients free cleaning services.

Cleaning 4 A Reason is an organization through ISSA Charities that links cancer patients with cleaning services. All free of charge.

“It’s super cool and very gratifying to see the relief on their faces,” says Caldwell.

“God has blessed me with so much; the least I can do is give back to the cancer patients.”

Patients can go online to sign up for the services or can be referred by hospitals; patients do have to be in active cancer treatment to be eligible.

“Helping people who are weak, tired, and overworked — that’s what this is about,” says Caldwell. “It’s a mental reset for them. Professional house cleaning is considered a luxury service, like getting your nails or eyelashes done. It’s something you could do

on your own, but even if the patients could physically do it, mentally, they are not in the right space. Vacuums are heavy. Mopping hurts your shoulders. They couldn’t clean if they wanted to.”

Being in a good environment, such as a freshly cleaned house, can also be good for your mental health.

“Your atmosphere and your mindset go hand in hand,” says Caldwell. “Your mindset is going to be totally different in a clean house as opposed to a

Cinder’Ella tries to schedule these cleanings while the patients are in treatment so they can return to a nice, clean home.

Caldwell says, “It’s good for their house. It is sanitized, and they know all the dust has been taken care of.”

In addition to its altruistic work, Cinder’Ella In Disguise provides residential, commercial, and short-term rental cleaning services. A short-term rental, or STR, is like an Airbnb. Caldwell hired her first employee in August of 2019 and has been off and running ever since.

Cha’Neal has 12 employees who ccccccc stay busy maintaining almost 100 recurring clients per month, both residential, commercial and short term rentals.

“A lot of housecleaners struggled during COVID, but we exploded,” says Caldwell. “People were scared of the virus. We lost a lot, but we gained a lot. It was a blessing in disguise. I was working for a realtor company, and my first clean was actually an empty rental. I just started it for passive income, and within two or three months, it exploded and turned into a full-blown business.”

Caldwell keeps her business

running smoothly by taking good care of the girls who work for her.

“I’m a great boss,” says Caldwell. “I spoil my girls. I get them massages and take them to the spa. I give them huge bonuses and get them cake on their birthdays. That reverberates into the quality they put into our work.”

Caldwell’s company spreads that love from the inside out.

“I’m very passionate about my company, my clients, and my workers,” Caldwell says. “We have a very low turnover because of that.”

Cinder’Ella In Disguise

offers a number of different services, including a highend luxury maid service. They are one of the more affordable professional cleaning services around, and all of Caldwell’s girls have multiple accredited certifications.

WK NICU Second Generation

The field of neonatal intensive care has undergone significant transformations over the past two centuries, reflecting advancements in medical practices, technology, and our understanding of infant health. To appreciate the great strides made in infant care, we must go back to the beginning of this field of medicine.

Initially, neonatal care was rudimentary, often limited to basic interventions for infants born prematurely or with congenital conditions. The historical development of neonatal intensive care can be traced back to the 19th century when the understanding of infant health was limited and often fraught with misconceptions. Early attempts at neonatal care were characterized by a lack of specialized knowledge and resources; premature infants were generally considered unlikely to survive. However, establishing specialized nurseries in the early 20th century marked a pivotal shift in neonatal care. The

first of these nurseries emerged in France in the 1880s, when physicians began recognizing the need

for dedicated spaces to care for sick and premature infants. By the 1940s, the concept of the neonatal

intensive care unit (NICU) began to take shape, with hospitals developing dedicated areas equipped with advanced medical technologies and staffed by healthcare professionals specializing in the care of newborns. A key milestone in this evolution was the introduction of incubators in the 1930s, which provided a controlled environment to protect vulnerable infants from external stresses. Throughout the decades, the field continued to evolve, with increasing recognition of the importance of specialized training for healthcare providers and the development of standards for neonatal care, culminating in the establishment of NICUs as essential components of modern healthcare systems.

Willis Knighton Hospital NICU

Willis Knighton Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stands as a beacon of hope and healing for the tiniest of patients, where advanced medical technology meets compassionate care In a meticulously designed environment tailored to meet the unique demands of newborns requiring intensive medical care, dedicated teams of neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and lactation consultants play a crucial role in the delivery of care. Each staff member is highly trained and specializes in various aspects of neonatal medicine, ensuring that every infant receives personalized attention tailored to their needs.

Amanda Button of Women’s Health Clinic admitting her to Willis Knighton South. Dangerously high blood pressure put Shakeena and her baby at risk. Her baby was due on July 3, more than one month away. A flood of emotions overwhelmed her as she reached for her phone to call her mom and the baby’s father to tell them “it’s time.” From early childhood Shakeena had always planned to be the “the rich aunt” in the family, never a mother herself, so this turn of events added to her anxiousness.

The NICU recognizes the vital role of family involvement in the healing process. Support services, including counseling and educational programs, are readily available to help parents navigate the challenges of having a child in intensive care. Familycentered care is emphasized, with open visiting hours and opportunities for parents to participate actively in their baby's care, fostering a sense of connection and empowerment during a vulnerable time.

Each year, Willis Knighton hosts a reunion for premature babies. From this reunion, we share a unique and heartwarming story of a young mother, her baby, her nurse, and her baby’s doctor. “I actually was feeling really good,” remembers Shakeena Pinkney about the day her regularly scheduled OB appointment ended with Dr.

Once at Willis Knighton, the mom-to-be and her baby were monitored throughout that day and the next until a drop in the baby’s heart rate necessitated a caesarian be performed. On May 31, 2024, Oaklynn Marie Hampton was born…a preemie like Shakeena 24 years earlier! And like her mom, Oaklynn spent the first days of her life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Willis Knighton South. “It was very emotional to see my daughter experience with her daughter some of what I went through with her,” says Shakeena’s mother, Marilyn Burns.

The discovery that neonatologist Dr. Bharti M. Manchandia and registered nurse Suzie Hapgood would care for Oaklynn brought Burns to tears. Both had cared for Shakeena in 1999 as a 1 pound, 14 ounce micro preemie, and now they would be providing that same care to Burns’ granddaughter.

“Dr. Manchandia said, ‘I took care of your daughter. I will take care of your granddaughter. Everything will be alright,’” Burns says.

“It was a full circle moment,” Shakeena added.

“We all cried when we realized the same doctor and nurse that took care of me would be taking care of my baby.”

“When I saw the name Pickney, I remembered I had taken care of a baby with that name before,” Hapgood recalls. “It’s not a common name. I couldn’t believe it.”

“Her eyes got so big,” Burns says when the connection registered with Hapgood.

“Soon, we all were crying.”

The love and quality care provided by Willis Knighton NICU neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and other healthcare providers hasn’t changed since Marilyn

Burns gave birth to her baby girl 24 years ago. The health organization’s tiniest, most vulnerable patients continue to receive intensive medical care from highly trained specialists using the most advanced medical technology.

But the NICU Burns remembers is long gone. In 2007, Willis Knighton expanded its NICU from 3,793 square feet to 22,069 square feet and became the first in the region to offer a neonatal intensive care unit with single patient rooms. It was a revolutionary concept. The expansion ended one of the most challenging parts for parents of a baby who has to spend time in a NICU – going home at the end of emotionally draining days, leaving their baby

behind, and the heartbreak of separation remembered years later.

“It was a scary, sad and emotional experience,” Burns recalls—the physical separation. Not being able to feed her baby herself and not being able to solely care for her baby. Feeling helpless. Not knowing what news she would get when the phone rang.

“At that time, all babies and mothers were in a big open ward together, separated only by curtains,” Burns says. “We would watch when other moms lost their babies because we were all in the same room. It was very hard emotionally.”

Single patient rooms at Willis Knighton’s NICU enable parents to stay overnight with their newborn and give staff more access and interaction with them and their baby. The calming environment, individual lighting, and reduced noise levels help babies achieve developmental goals. Rooms also provide moms space and privacy to breastfeed, practice skin-toskin bonding, and be more intimately involved in their newborn’s care.

Shakeena Pinkney says she’s grateful for a more private NICU experience with a family-centered focus.

“They helped me so much and took such great care of my baby,” she says. “I love them all and thank them for everything they did for my baby and all that they do for all the babies. They have such a love for what they do.”

Baby Oaklynn is now three months old, and Shekeena says it seems like they were leaving Willis Knighton South NICU yesterday. She remembers her first night home with her baby daughter well.

“We were so nervous,” she says with a laugh. “We were scared. I told myself, ‘I’m just not going to go to sleep. I’m staying up. I wanted to check her breathing.”

Something all mothers do.

While this is not a daily occurrence at the NICU, it reinforces that the Willis Knighton Hospital NICU's achievements are not merely anecdotal; they are backed by a wealth of successful outcomes and ongoing research initiatives that highlight the unit's commitment to excellence in neonatal care. Case studies from the NICU illustrate the remarkable resilience of premature infants, many of whom have overcome significant health challenges to thrive.

Willis-Knighton was the first in the region to offer a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with individual rooms. The design was showcased in national publications.  However, the best response has come from parents who were able to bond with their babies in a more private setting. The single-patient room (SPR) design offers many benefits, such as a decrease in how long the patient stays, a reduction in the incidence of sepsis, and a decreased use of supplemental oxygen. More importantly, SPR provides a more intimate bonding experience between parent and infant.

Willis Knighton Hospital NICU exemplifies the best practices in neonatal care, combining advanced medical technology with compassionate, family-

centered support. From its thoughtfully designed facility to its dedicated team of professionals, every aspect of the NICU is geared toward providing the highest level of care for vulnerable newborns. The rigorous patient care protocols and the emphasis on family involvement ensure that infants and their families receive the support they need during critical times. The NICU's commitment to innovation and community outreach highlights its vital role in advancing neonatal medicine and promoting public health awareness. As the field of neonatal care continues to evolve, the Willis Knighton Hospital NICU remains at the forefront, dedicated to saving lives and fostering hope for families facing the challenges of prematurity and illness.

LA PROSTHETIC DENTISTRY

DENTISTRY

When it comes to prosthodontics, LA Prosthetic Dentistry is in a class of its own in Northwest Louisiana. Since February 2023, LA Prosthetic Dentistry has been located on Kayla Street in Shreveport. They offer state-of-the-art full-mouth rehabilitation services where all treatment plans are tailored to each patient. Dr. Alvarado has given a smile back to people for years. Dr. Alvarado completed a 3-year residency training in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at University of Connecticut, and then obtained another 3-year residency

training program in Prosthodontics at LSU. This degree in prosthodontics gives Dr. Alvarado the advantage of being an expert in both highly complex and highly esthetic cases. Dr. Alvarado explains, “We are the only full-time prosthodontics practice in a three-hour radius from Shreveport. We design all of our cases digitally in-house, and we have milling and 3-D printing capabilities to assure quality control.” Dr. Alvarado and the LA Prosthetic Dentistry staff believe that the sky is the limit for their practice. “Our goal is to work alongside the referring dentists to

become an extension to them for the more complex cases,” says Dr. Alvarado. “We have expanded our services to implant placement and restoration to allow for more accessible treatment.”

Through LA Prosthetic Dentistry, the citizens of Shreveport/Bossier City, and the surrounding areas have access to Full Mouth and Tooth Rehabilitation, Highly Esthetic Veneers and Crowns, Full Mouth Complex Implant Rehabilitation, Prosthetic Oral Hygiene Care, Dentures, and Implant Over Dentures. They also offer specialized treatment for accident and cancer patients.

“The best part of my job is when I see a patient that is in despair when they have lost hope because they have been told ‘there is nothing that can be done to help you’ and then I can provide them with treatment that, for the first time in a long time, gives them happiness. It

is always gratifying to see them smile for the first time,” says Dr. Alvarado. “Giving someone their smile back and seeing patients hold their heads high is why I do this.”

Anyone interested in LA Prosthetic Dentistry is more than welcome to check out their website laprosdentistry.com or call them at 318-9963949. Your new smile is waiting at LA Prosthetic Dentistry.

When teeth become hopeless and patients get tired of spending a fortune on replacing old crowns, dental implants can provide a fixed solution that doesn’t come out of the mouth to provide back the beautiful smile that patients always wanted.

Worn down dentition can represent a health and a social problem to most people but crowns and bridges can restore a smile to its natural state and give patient a second chance.

Highly esthetic demands require highly esthetic treatments which can be achieved by restoring smiles with beautiful veneers.

SHREVEPORT BOSSIER FAMILY DENTAL CARE DENTISTRY

For over 37 years, Shreveport Bossier

Family Dental Care has been a dental office like no other. They’ve pushed boundaries with innovation and technology and shaped the smiles of the Shreveport-Bossier City community with their expertise.

Many of their talented, cutting edge dentists have special niches that ensure patients get a quality experience each visit. They’re constantly learning from each other to become better dentists and clinicians. Seminars and continuing education courses are the norm, and new information learned is shared between colleagues.

Each patient is provided an individualized dental plan that ensures comfort, trust, and relaxation while in the dental chair. Patients are made to feel at ease and at home during office visits — just like they are part of the family. Painless, worry-free appointments are

the goal. Relationships are important — and so are beautiful, healthy smiles.

With 5 locations across the Shreveport Bossier area and open 6 days a week, they can cater to the patient’s schedule or desired location. They not only routinely exceed patients’ expectations, but also go above and beyond to give everyone the best dental experience possible.

A wide range of insurance is accepted, and financial assistance is given to patients who need it. There is also a loyalty program available to make dental care affordable for patients without insurance benefits.

In 2014, they founded Trading Smiles, a free dental day in the spring, to service the needs of uninsured citizens in the community. Patients are able to trade two canned goods for a dental service such as a cleaning, extraction, or filling. The items are then donated to the NWLA

Food Bank.

3 Miles for Free Smiles, a 5K race and fundraiser that supports local oral and maxillofacial surgery teams, was founded in 2016. $13,000 has been raised for children at Shriner’s Hospital Shreveport and the LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Teams for the repair of cleft lips and palates.

The staff provides services from routine cleanings, fillings, and cosmetics to full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, Invisalign, sleep related breathing disorder solutions, and Botulinum toxin and Dermal Fillers for facial esthetics and myofascial pain. Sedation dentistry is offered to patients for a more relaxing experience.

All twelve doctors participate in donated dental services. They’ve been able to donate over 1,342 hours of skill and give over $574,000 to those that need it most. They feel everyone should have the opportunity for a beautiful, healthy smile.

BOSSIER FAMILY DENTAL CARE FOR KIDS DENTISTRY

Shreveport Bossier Family Dental Care for Kids dentist, Bryan Stewart loves working with children every day and making their dental visits as comfortable as possible.

“When I was a child, my local dentist was awesome and inspired me to become one,” said Stewart, a Shreveport native who has been practicing for 29 years. “I love helping a child go from fearing a dentist visit to making it the best visit he or she has ever had.”

Stewart enjoys what he does and can’t see himself doing anything else. He provides dentistry for infants, toddlers, and adolescents in a kid-friendly environment, and focuses on comprehensive care that will give kids a healthy smile that will last a lifetime.

Compassion and the desire to help are prerequisites to be a dentist, and Stewart has those qualities covered. He can best be described as jovial, and this trait has helped him relate to children and be more emphatic to parents and their situations.

Last October, Dr. Karen Hake, Pediatric Dentist joined the practice. She is a mom of 4, proud wife, and a grandmother of 3! She loves dogs and fosters rescue dogs. “I love dentistry and cannot imagine doing any other career. When not working, I love to travel, attend concerts and hang out with my husband/family and dogs,” Hake says.

“We understand it can be difficult to get your kids to cooperate at the dentist,” Stewart said. “We do all we can to make them comfortable, and we have tools and techniques to do just that. Our mission is to help your child have an out-of-this-world experience in an office that’s all about them!”

WELCOME HOME

FOSTER ORTHODONTICS

ORTHODONTICS

Foster Orthodontics is proud to welcome Dr. Jason B. Cope home. Dr. Cope is a native of Bossier City, LA where his father, Dr. Don Cope, practiced orthodontics for 32 years. For the past 24 years Jason has been in private practice in Dallas, Texas. A prolific author and speaker, Dr. Cope has published 36 journal articles, 36 book chapters and two complete orthodontic textbooks. He has given over 350 presentations, speaking across the US and in 22 countries on 6 continents. Along with his wife, Laura and their two children Izzie and Luca, Dr. Cope is thrilled to return home and practice alongside Dr. Ben E. Foster and Dr. Benjamin C. Foster.

Family runs deep at Foster Orthodontics. Both Dr. Benjamin C. Foster and Dr. Jason B. Cope are second generation orthodontists, and the passion for straightening teeth and changing lives through smiles is in their DNA. Both Dr. Foster and Dr. Cope strive to continue to provide exceptional orthodontic services to their patients and carry on the legacy started by their fathers.

Orthodontics is about more than

just teeth, according to Dr. Ben. It’s about improving self-confidence and appearance. It’s for people missing teeth, and for people with jaw problems or other facial issues that prevent the proper function of the teeth. To correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, Foster Orthodontics specializes in the Damon System (clear and metal braces) along with clear aligner therapy.

“I like to see patients initially at about the age of seven. You can catch small problems early with easy solutions that prevent big problems down the road if ignored. Anyone that has healthy teeth and supporting structure is a candidate for orthodontics. Age has no bearing on it.

I saw a 95-year-old lady this morning.”

“Advances in technology have opened possibilities in orthodontics that were not previously possible. Much of my focus for the past 24 years was in developing clinical protocols and products to enhance clinical treatment. One such product was the development of a MiniScrew Implant system, also known as Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs), which allow

orthodontist to move teeth and correct bite problems that were previously not possible or required surgery,” said Dr. Cope. “My most recent focus has been the incorporation of 3D data into the orthodontic workflow; specifically, intraoral scans, 3D CT imaging, and 3D printed appliances.”

“It is all about our patients. We love getting to know each and every one, and customer service is huge for us,” said Dr. Ben. “My dad told me when I first came into practice 13 years ago, ‘You treat every single one of these patients like they are your child, your mother, your sister, your wife, and you’ll be fine. I stand by that. And I sleep very well at night.”

You can find Dr. Benjamin C. Foster and Dr. Jason B. Cope at one of 3 convenient Foster Orthodontics locations in Shreveport, Bossier City and Stonewall.

LUSK EYE SPECIALISTS OPHTHALMOLOGY KEEPING YOUR FAMILY FOCUSED

It’s always been about family at Lusk Eye Specialists. It started more than three decades ago, when pioneering eye surgeon, James Lusk, MD and his wife Catherine packed up and moved to Shreveport to start his ophthalmology career. The drive up from Houston may not have been as exciting as going West during the Oklahoma land rush in the 1800s, but the Lusk journey has been every bit as fulfilling. After settling into Shreveport, it wasn’t long before the 2nd generation of Lusk eye surgeons - Bryan and Jeffrey - were born into the family. Fortunately for the family and local residents, the two boys decided to focus their professional careers in medicine. Even more fortunate was that Bryan & Jeffrey studied hard enough to earn the

right to specialize in ophthalmology. And perhaps what is the most fortunate of all, is that they chose to come home to Shreveport to join their father at Lusk Eye Specialists.

Since beginning their careers in Shreveport, numerous hallmark events have occurred with the Lusk family. The first and the most fun has been the addition of the 3rd generation of Lusks… who one day they hope will join their fathers and grandfather in continuing their tradition of eye care excellence in Shreveport. Bryan and Stephanie Lusk have been blessed with the additions of Wyatt & Iris Lusk. Jeffrey and Lauren Lusk have been equally blessed with their two children, Mae Francis and Austin Lusk.

They’ve taken the ‘Lusk Family’ approach to eye care to a whole new level. But the event that typifies the grandness of the Lusk family coming full circle in ophthalmology was when Dr. Bryan Lusk and Dr. Jeffrey Lusk worked together to perform cataract surgery on their father, Dr. James Lusk. Undergoing cataract surgery has not only increased the faith and confidence Dr. James Lusk has in the surgical skills of his 2 sons. It has made him a better cataract surgeon now knowing exactly what a cataract patient goes through before, during and after surgery.

The great circle of life has indeed taken place with the Lusk family…and they couldn’t be happier or more excited about the future.

Mid City Pediatrics has a history of providing outstanding patient care for children in Northwest Louisiana for over 30 years. Mid City Pediatrics is the oldest independently owned pediatric practice in the ShreveportBossier City community. With a combined clinical experience of more than 100 years of caring for children in our area, the doctors continue to provide excellent care to children of all ages.

Mid City Pediatrics is conveniently and centrally located near the intersection of I-20 and I-49. The office offers numerous amenities, including separate sick and well entrances and waiting areas, a certified lab, and on-site x-ray services. You will always find a cheerful atmosphere, kid-friendly exam rooms, and free Wi-Fi service offered for parents’ convenience.

Mid City Pediatrics is open 6 days a week,

and one of the seven physicians is always on call after hours. They offer same-day appointments along with walk-in visits. The physicians at Mid City Pediatrics feel that offering same-day sick walk-in visits are a necessary part of a pediatric practice. As parents themselves, they know that you cannot schedule when your child becomes ill and needs prompt pediatric care.

Mid City Pediatrics takes pride in being a completely independent practice, allowing them to stay progressive in a time of constant change. Mid City Pediatrics has been a front-runner in innovating and adapting to better serve its patients and their families. In 2020, they were the first pediatric practice in the area to offer a drive-through flu vaccine clinic. The practice offers an informational website as well as an active Facebook and Instagram page to keep parents informed on relevant

topics. Mid City Pediatrics also offers a convenient check-in process in which patients simply scan a QR code in the parking lot. This allows families the option of remaining in their vehicle for the duration of their wait, or they may choose to come inside to wait in one of the two waiting rooms. Once inside, patients are cared for by knowledgeable, caring staff trained in pediatric care.

The practice gained three new physicians over the last several years, making Mid City Pediatrics the largest pediatric practice in the area. The physicians make newborn hospital rounds at all private, community hospitals in the Shreveport and Bossier City areas, allowing more flexibility to patients. Mid City Pediatrics accepts most major insurance plans.

The physicians welcome you to make an appointment today and become a member of the Mid City Pediatric family where you will receive “Great Care for Great kids!”

POSITIVE STEPS FERTILITY

FERTILITY SPECIALISTS

Dr. John Preston “Pres” Parry is an internationally recognized fertility and surgical expert. He tripled majored at Cornell, did his graduate work at Columbia, and medical school at New York Medical College. This was followed by OB/GYN residency at Tufts and reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship at the U. of Louisville. He has published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is President of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and is on the editorial board for Fertility and Sterility (the primary U.S. fertility medical journal). Finally, he has been involved in multiple patents and is the inventor of the “Parryscope® technique” for comprehensive single visit fertility testing.

WHAT IS THE TOP QUESTION FOR COUPLES WITH INFERTILITY?

“Will I get pregnant?” is clearly the

number one question. If most women under 35 have a 40% chance of being pregnant in three months with low-cost, low-tech solutions, there is a lot of hope. The key thing is making sure they have the right diagnosis, as I routinely see women who have blocked tubes, polyps, low egg counts, and other factors that have been missed, and they’ve been putting their energy and hope into the wrong things.

HOW CAN A WOMAN UNDERSTAND HER FERTILITY?

The Parryscope® technique is part of a broader approach, fusing ultrasound and office hysteroscopy to understand the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and uterus in a single visit. It gives women accurate, gentle, fast, and safe care with immediate results that they want.

IS FERTILITY CARE AFFORDABLE? Insurance often does a bait and switch

with patients where they often have very different expenses than what they think. We’re very upfront about our prices, where currently it is $150 for a consult, $75 for a semen analysis, and $1000 total for fertility testing for most women. Also, for oral medication, an ultrasound, and insemination, it is about $550 a month, and IVF (in vitro fertilization) is closer to $13-14,000 plus medications.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE?

Though capable and experienced, couples want to know how much you care before they care how much you know. We fuse excellence, empathy, and efficiency in a way that gets results. Finally, coming to Positive Steps Fertility is a lot like joining a family—we’re with you every step of the way and share in the tears and laughter. We can’t wait to help everyone have the children of their dreams!

Sanders is known as the place to go for your face in our area; in fact, he is in the exclusive group of physicians known as the “Top 500” within Allergan - the makers of Botox and Juvéderm facial injectables. He has been an instructor for Allergan for many years and routinely travels to speak and teach other physicians and medical professionals about facial aesthetic treatments.

Dr. Sanders is a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who specializes in facial rejuvenation surgery (facelifting), rhinoplasty (nose shaping), hair restoration surgery, and all facial injectables. He has been in practice for 22 years and is an Associate Professor of LSU Health Shreveport for the training of the

He is most excited with the non-invasive and minimally invasive technologies he has available in his practice. Non-surgical fat removal on almost any part of the body with the CoolSculpting Elite device, his CoolSculpting specialist can help remove those trouble spots on women and men who desire a “no downtime” option. His Facetite, Bodytite, and Morpheus 8 devices offer minimally invasive skin tightening and fat sculpting to the jowl, neck, cheeks, and body areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.

When it comes to surgical intervention for the aging face, Dr. Sanders’ unique techniques will achieve a natural

appearance. “Someone asking for facial rejuvenation surgery wants to look like a younger version of him or herself, not like a different person” states Sanders. Hair restoration is another love of Dr. Sanders. He is the only physician performing this procedure within a 200mile radius and his results rival those of any hair transplant surgeon anywhere. Dr. Sanders uses the micro-graft technique, producing a completely invisible end result without any “doll hair” or “corn rows” as is seen with older techniques.

Our goal is to treat low back and neck pain as early as possible to prevent it from becoming a chronic and lifelong problem. Dr. John Noles, Dr. David Hirsch, and Dr. Russell Stuermann are double board certified in anesthesiology and pain management. Dr. Germany brings a multispecialty approach to the practice offering Botox injections as well as acupuncture. We use the latest technology available to safely and effectively treat our patients.

All treatments offered at Spine & Pain Specialists are minimally invasive and most are nonsurgical. Our approach is to first identify the source of a patient’s pain so that we can create a treatment plan best suited for each patient. Each treatment plan is designed to improve quality of life as well as overall function. We offer a comprehensive array of treatments including non-narcotic medications and injection therapy. One of our primary goals for our patients is to decrease or eliminate opioid (narcotic) medications. Our treatment plan only uses narcotic pain medication when all other options have been exhausted.

Our team of doctors, physician extenders,

nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff at Spine & Pain Specialists recognizes that coping with pain is very difficult and burdensome for the patient as well as their family members and friends. We treat each patient with the same care and compassion we would want for our family members.

South Shreveport Dental was rebranded in 2013 by Dr. Andrew Simpson, but it is not a new practice. Dr. Andrew Simpson is the 4th generation owner of the very first dental practice founded in Shreveport, Louisiana. Dr. Simpson and his team have revamped the practice, investing heavily in digital technology and equipment, but they are also known for their personal touch on every aspect of dentistry.

At South Shreveport Dental, our mission has always been to explore the latest, but proven, techniques to provide the most modern dental care available today. In the past, we discussed how 3D imaging and digital dentistry allowed us to improve disease diagnosis and treatment, lower total treatment costs and improve treatment efficiency by cutting down on lab manufacturing times. CEREC technology provides us with same day crowns, veneers and dental implant surgical guides along with other digital solutions.

Dr. Simpson attended Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans and graduated in 2009. He practiced for four years in Baton Rouge before moving to Shreveport. “We know patients have many options in selecting a dental office. We have made every effort to make all patients feel like they’ve found a home,” Dr. Simpson said.

The Scariest Night in American History

Inthe early morning hours of August 9, 1969, four perpetually drug-addled members of Charles Manson’s “family” would amble over to the house at 10050 Cielo Drive in the Benedict Canyon region of Beverly Hills with absolutely no idea how much of an indelible mark they were about to make in the annals of American history. The four in question were Charles “Tex” Watson, Susan “Sadie” Atkins, Patricia “Katie” Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian, who had no family moniker since she had only been involved with the family two weeks but was sent on the mission because she had the only valid driver’s license in the clan. They were ordered by Manson to go to that house and “totally destroy everyone in that house, as gruesome as you can,” and to “leave something witchy.” In a trial that would later include defendants who shoved the prosecutor’s papers off a desk, wore acid-laced dresses to court, and lunged at the judge while he was talking, six innocent lives were lost that night, including an unborn baby. History has recorded the details of these crimes for the last 55 years; for this story, “something witchy” indeed was left: the blood of slain, pregnant, 26-year-old actress Sharon Tate was used to smear the word “PIG” on the front door of the house,

Tate was an up-and-coming actress of the day who was not the “It” girl of Hollywood, but close to it (think Olivia Wilde or Blake Lively, not Jennifer Aniston or Julia Roberts). However, she was married to the “It” director of the day, Roman Polanski, the Quentin Tarantino of the late 60s. She was also the unofficial inspiration for the iconic “Malibu Barbie,” a character that recently had a successful run in theaters, after playing a character called “Malibu” in a 1967 film named “Don’t Make Waves.” Ironically, “Barbie” is played by Margot Robbie, who played Sharon Tate in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a 2019 film directed by Quentin Tarantino whose plot spun a fictionalized account around the night of the Tate murders.

After the murders at Cielo Drive, time seemed to stand still for the next 20 years. Previous residents had included Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon, Henry Fonda, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and other assorted figures of the day who came over to hang out. The owner of the house, Rudolph Altobelli, a manager of different stars of the day in Hollywood, had been leasing it to Tate and her husband at the time of the murders.

After the murders, Altobelli just moved in himself, locating a tenant being a new challenge, and something he would continue to be unsuccessful at for the next 20 years. Finally, in September 1988, Altobelli sold the home, and its ownership would change hands again in less than two years to investor Alvin Weintraub, who would try to sell the house himself a year later, to no avail. Defeated, Weintraub eventually tore the house down and had a new property built in its place after the last tenant left. The house that stands

in its place today has been nicknamed “Villa Bella” by Weintraub, before “Full House” creator Jeff Franklin bought it and renovated it into a modern 21,000-square-foot monstrosity. Weintraub also changed the address to 10066 Cielo Drive instead of 10050, in a further attempt at separating the property from its past. Back to the last tenant who rented the property before it was torn down because this is where Shreveport gets involved. Reznor left the house in December 1993 but was not completely over the house’s macabre appeal; he took the front door that had Tate’s blood on it with him to use at his new recording studio, “Nothing Studios,” in New Orleans at 4500 Magazine Street (rumor has it he paid some of the construction workers razing the house some money to let him take the door). It stood as the entry door to the studio until he relocated back to L.A. in 2004. Strangely, he just left it at the New

Orleans studio, where it sat untouched for the next eight years, and miraculously was not harmed by Hurricane Katrina. In 2012, a local plastic surgeon bought the property for his business, and upon discovering the significance of the front door, took it out of the dumpster. This is where the story hits home: Shreveport native Christopher Moore, who was living in New Orleans at the time, bought the door from the doctor, who had been keeping it in his mother-in-law’s house. Though he has since had the door auctioned off at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills (more on that later), Mr. Moore graciously accepted a sit down with me to ask him about the door and his showbiz-artistry career that led him to all this (this interview took place in August of 2023).

SO, YOU’RE FROM SHREVEPORT? HOW’D YOU WIND UP IN NEW ORLEANS?

“I’ve been an artist my whole life. I always wanted to live in New Orleans, I just didn’t find a college I could go to that would accommodate my life at that time. I wanted to move down here, and I found an opportunity in 2012.

Part of the reason for living down here was being an artist and working in movies. I worked on some movies up in Shreveport, though. I worked on “Year One,” “Season of the Witch,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “6 Month Rule,” “Leaves of Grass.” The one that I get most recognized for is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre because of the cult following that it has.

HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS THE DOOR?

“I lived right off Magazine Street, and I had known that it was there up until a certain point. I was interested in finding out where it was, and I thought it’d be cool to have it, to own it.’ So, I started to try to

contact the owner of the property, trying to get it through him. Through emailing back and forth I found out that he did have the door, that he had it in storage in Metairie, and that we could work out a deal where I could purchase it from him to get it.

It was the biggest crime of the century then. It was in 1969, and the “Summer of Love” was in 1967, it ended all the love, and it changed the way people thought from that point forward. No one had ever really locked their doors, and they’d leave their keys in their car. People were scared to death in L.A. for weeks. People thought, ‘I’m gonna’ get killed next.’ So, people started locking their doors and it changed L.A. forever. There’s an interest still 50 years later because it's still considered one of the top ten crimes of all time, even though it would pale in comparison to what’s happened since then, but for its time it was horrific.”

WAS IT…CREEPY HAVING THE DOOR? WAS IT OMINOUS OR WEIRD?

“I honestly never felt creepy about it. I know when I would sit and contemplate for hours in the room with it, sitting there and thinking… I thought more about the history. People like Cary Grant, Candace Bergen lived there, Terry Melcher, Paul Revere and the Raiders lived in that house…so there were a lot of famous people who crossed through that door. It always had a positive thing, which was kind of cool. Then one bad event changed the history, but it was all part of that door. Even in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” they tried to focus on that door, even though they changed the whole storyline. Once I got it in my possession, nothing ever was creepy about it. It was just an object.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SEEING IT GO?

“I think it belongs in a museum somewhere. I am not doing it justice by keeping it. Maybe if I held onto it for another 20 years it’d be worth 20 times that. It’s not about the money for me, it was just an object that I had. Though I’m auctioning it off, I just thought that was the best way to do it, to get a worldwide audience…where somebody will probably be able to become the caretaker of it, that it will end up at the right place.

I like the fact that I was a caretaker of it and kept it from being destroyed for a little bit longer in its history. Hopefully, I get to pass that on to somebody else who will do the same, because it very well could have been thrown away, that would’ve been the end of the story.”

So, the door to the “Manson Murder House” has had an interesting path following its original home, but whatever came of some of Manson’s followers? Was it worth it? Mary Brunner, Manson’s very first “family” member, who bore him a child, participated in another murder the Manson family committed and even went to prison for committing armed robbery as part of a ploy to get Manson out of jail in 1971. Here were her final words about Manson. “If you never mention him again to

me it will be too soon. I can’t stand him, and I don’t want to talk about the (expletive) creep; you understand?” She was paroled in 1977, changed her name, and has not been seen or heard from in the public eye since.

Susan “Sadie” Atkins was the most infamous female follower of Manson’s. At her trial for the murders, an LA Times reporter quipped, “…I get the feeling that one day she might start screaming, and simply never stop.” She was sentenced to death along with her three codefendants but had her sentence commuted to life in prison after the California State Supreme Court abolished the death penalty in February 1972. In 1974, Atkins gave her life to Christ in prison, and in 1977 wrote an autobiography about her life from her childhood up to her post-conversion life, entitled “Child of Satan, Child of God.” She died in prison on September 24, 2009, of brain cancer. In a television interview with Dianne Sawyer in 2002, over 30 years after the murders, she said Manson was “…the most difficult person in my life to forgive.”

Lastly, Charles “Tex” Watson, the most infamous male follower of Manson’s and the chief perpetrator of eight of the nine murders the family was responsible for. Watson was tried separately from the others

because he had fled back to his hometown of Copeville, Texas, in October of 1969. Watson too would follow the death-sentencecommuted-to-life trail. Watson, whom Manson once called a “soldier” in a prison interview later in life, renounced Manson and got saved in June of 1975, and also came out with an autobiography published in 1978 entitled, “Will You Die For Me?”, since renamed “Cease to Exist.” Watson has been running a ministry out of prison called “Abounding Love Ministries” since 1980 and became an ordained minister in 1981. He remains incarcerated to this day, at the age of 78, at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

Earlier, I briefly mentioned that Mr. Moore had given the door to Julien’s Auctions to be auctioned off…so how much did the door to perhaps the most infamous murder of all time, that passed through Shreveport’s hands of all places, sell for you might ask?

$127,000, to an undisclosed private buyer on September 8, 2023. So, for now, good, bad, or indifferent, this piece of American history is now someone’s personal history, and we can only hope that they will be a good caretaker of it, as Mr. Moore alluded to, and his st ory reminds us that it is amazing how close history can hit to home.

laughter

For life’s moments, big and small. We’re here with the strength of the cross, the protection of the shield. The Right Card. The Right Care.

Summer is fading away quickly this year (thankfully), and autumn is at our door. Yes, it’s time to begin preparations for a fall garden. To successfully navigate this transitional period, one must consider essential strategies such as preparing the garden, selecting appropriate plants, and timing the planting effectively. SB has researched a few tips to ensure a fruitful and vibrant garden as the seasons shift.

FallGardening Tips

1.Preparation: assess the soil quality by testing the pH levels and nutrient composition. Added compost or well-rotted manure, can enhance soil fertility.

2.Plant selection: perennial flowers that thrive in cooler weather and add vibrancy to the garden landscape. Plants like asters, chrysanthemums, and sedums not only bloom beautifully but also provide vital sustenance for pollinators preparing for winter. Ornamental plants such as ornamental cabbage and kale, as well as colorful grasses, can create visual interest and texture in the garden. The strategic selection of these plants ensures that the garden remains lively and productive throughout the fall season.

3.Timing: Understanding the first frost dates in our region is essential for planning the planting schedule.

4.Maintenance: this ensures that plants remain healthy and productive as the temperatures drop. Implement proper watering techniques; cooler temperatures often lead to reduced evaporation rates, which can mislead gardeners about the moisture needs of their plants. Check the soil moisture regularly and adjust watering schedules accordingly, as overwatering can lead to root rot and other complications.

5.Fertilization: strategies for fall gardens should be tailored to the specific needs of each plant. A balanced fertilizer, rich in phosphorus and potassium, can support root development and prepare plants for the stress of winter. It's also advisable to apply fertilizers later in the season to avoid

stimulating excessive growth that may not have time to harden off before frost.

6.Protection: pests, such as aphids and spider mites, can thrive in the fall, often seeking refuge in the more sheltered environments of gardens. Keeping your garden clean by removing any debris or diseased plants can help reduce the likelihood of disease outbreaks, ensuring a healthier garden environment.

7.Mulching: Select appropriate mulch materials. Organic options such as straw, shredded leaves, and wood chips are excellent choices that not only suppress weeds but also enrich the soil as they decompose. Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil, which becomes increasingly important as the days grow shorter, and rainfall becomes less predictable. Mulching regulates soil temperature, creating a more stable

environment for plant roots as they transition into the cooler months. A layer of 2 to 4 inches is typically recommended, ensuring that the mulch is spread evenly around the base of the plants but not touching the stems to prevent rot. Regularly replenishing mulch as it breaks down. Applying a thick layer of mulch around the base can help protect roots from freezing temperatures.

Preparation for winter is an essential component of fall gardening, particularly for those looking to protect perennial plants. By following these tips for fall gardening, gardeners can cultivate a thriving, sustainable environment that yields both beauty and nourishment throughout the changing seasons.

He prides himself on meeting patients where they are: “You can come as you are … whatever it is. We’ll deal with it and whatever it takes to make your life better,” he says. “I like to sit and look at people and talk with them and treat people the way they want to be treated.”

CHRISTUS KIDS CLINIC EXPANSION MEANS WIDER RANGE

OF SERVICE FOR SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES

CHRISTUS Kids Clinic has undergone a recent renovation and expansion that allows more children to be treated at its Shreveport facility with more resources. CHRISTUS Kids Clinic offers pediatric physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy to help children from birth to 21 years old meet developmental milestones and gain life skills through developing movement, communication, feeding, and play.

The clinic sees about 300 patients a week and has six speech therapists, six physical therapists, and seven occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants on staff. The project is funded through CHRISTUS

Foundation Shreveport-Bossier, with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals donations.

“We take in donations and then match them to the projects that impact patients and families,” said Amy Heron, executive director of philanthropy with CHRISTUS Foundation Shreveport- Bossier.

Andrew D’Avy, director of rehabilitation services with CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier, will hire additional therapists to accommodate the expansion.

“This clinic offers the most advanced service and equipment locally, even regionally,” he said. “In our partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, we get funding and grant monies for services, education, and equipment,” Hooper said the expansion is an essential move for local and surrounding communities. “We have children who come from two hours away to get their care,” she said.

DR. ASHISH SONIG PERFORMS FIRST CEREBRAL ANEURYSM TREATMENT SURGERY AT WILLIS KNIGHTON HEALTH USING BIPLANE IMAGING

Ashish Sonig, MD, of WK Neurovascular Neurosurgery, has performed the first successful cerebral aneurysm treatment surgery at Willis Knighton Health using flow diverter technology and biplane imaging. Dr. Sonig is an experienced neurovascular neurosurgeon who moved here in March to establish the Willis Knighton Neurovascular Institute and has performed this procedure many times during his career.

Flow diversion technology is a minimally invasive procedure where doctors precisely place a flow-diverting stent into the patient’s brain through a catheter, rerouting the blood away from the aneurysm, making it less likely to rupture.

The neuro-interventional biplane, an imageguided therapy system, is used to plan and carry out complex neurovascular procedures precisely, such as flow diversion, and is a vital part of the diagnosis and treatment pathway for stroke.

Image beam rotation ensures patientoriented images from every angulation and rotation, eliminating the need to pivot the table or reposition the patient. It provides a 3D roadmap of every brain vessel for precise surgical treatment.

CHRISTUS HEALTH ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR LOCAL NONPROFITS

Five organizations receive $295,000 for community health initiatives.

CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier Health System held a Blessing of the Hands ceremony to announce the distribution of $295,000 awarded to five local nonprofit organizations through the CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund.

The Blessing of the Hands Ceremony recognized, celebrated, and anointed the hands of the CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund grantees. The event served as an opportunity to highlight the impact of the dollars on the grantees’ projects and to acknowledge their contributions to the community.

The CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund was launched in 2011 and is a CHRISTUSwide system initiative that supports programs led by local organizations that respond to the community's needs and improve its health and well-being. The fund supports local organizations that provide community programs to address social determinants such as housing, food access, rehabilitation programs, and transportation.

Recipients include Community Renewal International, Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CADA), Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, Shreveport Green, and St. Luke’s Mobile Medical Ministry Inc.

RELEASED IN 1989, INDIGO GIRLS' EPONYMOUS MAJOR LABEL DEBUT SOLD OVER TWO MILLION COPIES with the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears”, and transformed INDIGO GIRLS into one of the most successful folk duos in history. With an over 35-year career that began in clubs around their native Atlanta, Georgia, the multiGrammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray—described by Rolling Stone as “the ideal duet partners”— has recorded 16 studio albums, sold over 15 million records, and built a dedicated, enduring following across the globe.

Their latest studio album, Look Long, is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date.

“While our lyrics and writing approach may change, our passion for music feels the same as it did when we were 25-years-old.”

Crowd singalongs that often overpower the band itself are a trademark of Indigo Girls concerts. The phenomenon epitomizes the sense of community and celebration that defines Indigo Girls’ music.

BEAUTYBossUNFILTERED

Over the years, I’ve brought you an array of fabulous trends, topics, and seasonal ensembles. With our city being a melting pot of stylish people, I’ve decided to focus my expertise right here locally in our beautiful hometown of SBC, highlighting a collection of ready-to-wear fashion worn by locals, found around town throughout my everyday adventures on the go, thus bringing you the Beauty Boss Unfiltered.

Ms. Turaeza Lopez

Location:

Tejas Kitchen Bar Patio Turaeza is dressed comfortably yet fabulously in her athletic tennis skirt, accompanied by a denim jacket chicly thrown over a white tank and paired with chunky sandals. She accessorized with an ever-so-cool pair of oversized shades while enjoying a Sunday brunch.

Mr. Kyle Richardson

Location:

Tejas Kitchen Bar Patio

Kyle looked too cool to pass up. He took staple pieces an everyday man should have in his closet: A nice fitted white tee, a slim-fit pair of jeans, and styled with athletic sneakers. Throw in a designer watch and shades, and you will have the perfect look for Sunday brunch with friends.

Mrs. Cathy Zahn

Location:

Sam’s Town

Cathy is dressed in all things pink while attending the Krewe of Gemini Coronation. Her Parisian-inspired outfit consists of a pink short suit embellished with feathered sleeves and styled with her floralprinted rhinestone booties. This is a perfect match for her custom pink Barrett flown in all the way from Paris.

Tammy Calquitt

Location: At Home Store

While shopping, I spotted one of the cutest trends to date. Tammy was wearing a too-cute pattern-maker trend by mixing a floral print top embellished with an exaggerated seersucker sleeve tied in the flared hemline on her cropped pants. Mixing patterns as she did is a playful way to stay in style and on-trend.

Jennifer King

Location: Sams Town

At a more formal event, I ran into Jennifer King pulling a trifecta of trends, from her wide-legged pantsuit with her puffed exaggerated sleeves to her builtin hardware belt. The belt not only draws the eye to the slimmest part of the body, but the puffed sleeves create a fun, flirty silhouette that creates sass and drama.

Sarah Gamble

Location: Sauvage

When I walked into Sauvage for lunch, I immediately spotted this fabulous bold printed fullsleeved knee-length dress. Sarah looked captivating in this stunning one-of-akind look, hitting the style mark for any elegant Sunday affair.

Bayou Sid THE BAYOU MAGIC MAN

You can’t throw a measuring cup down a grocery store aisle in Louisiana without hitting some sort of Bayou Magic product. Whether it’s spices, beans or rice, Bayou Magic has been a Cajun seasoning staple since August 17, 1987. That’s when Sidney Campbell and the Bayou Magic team made their first official sale of 18 total items to the Albertsons on Southfield Road in Shreveport.

Among the items were rice mixes, jambalaya mixes and

seasoning shakers.

Years before, down around Ville Platte, Bayou Sid and the gang had been getting their marketing and selling done grassroots style.

“We used teaspoons, tablespoons and cups,” says Campbell. “We went around the dining room table and put it in Ziploc bags with wrap-around labels.”

“We would have people — some friends and children who were helping us — who would take the bags home, sit on the front porch and wait for the distributor to come by and dish them out to the buyers.”

To get the word out back in the day, Bayou Sid would go

from store-to-store handing out free samples of beans, rice and seasoning to the store managers. “Here you go, I’m just going to leave that for you,” Campbell would say. It didn’t take long for the stores to come calling Campbell.

Before he became Bayou Sid, Campbell was in the music business. “I had more fun and made less money than I ever had in my life,” says Campbell. He knew he was onto something special with his seasonings when his bandmates loved what they were always eating after gigs. “We would eat Bayou Magic after shows, and my bandmates would always

tell me I needed to sell this stuff,” says Campbell. Make you wanna cut a rug!

Bayou Sid has been getting jiggy with it ever since. It takes a team, though.

Bayou Sid says he gets a lot of recipes from his wife.

“The recipes come from my wife’s folks,” Campbell says. “We use authentic Cajun and Creole recipes from people who were run out of Nova Scotia in the 1800s and settled

down south.”

The authenticity and integrity to the craft is what keeps people coming back to Bayou Magic. Consumers love the product and employees love working for the guy.

“Everyone who started with us worked with us up until they died,” says Campbell.

Talk about loyalty.

“I call myself the originator, and everyone else is duplicators,” Bayou Sid says.

Campbell has even done cooking shows for Southern Living. They know him there as ‘The Man in the Hat.’ He would go on there and show them how to cook a fivecourse meal in 30 minutes. Throughout the years Sid Campbell has been cooking it up, there have been times where people wanted a piece of the Bayou Magic pie. Or the whole thing. “Marshall Bass at Nabisco offered me $8 million,” Campell says.

Whoa. That’s a lot of jambalaya! “He had stopped

in Atlanta at a friend’s house and ate gumbo,” says Bayou Sid. “I turned it down. Mr. Bass said he wanted to put Bayou Magic ‘under the Nabisco umbrella.’ I told him, ‘Mr. Bass, you think it’s going to rain?’”

“I told my wife I could fly to the moon.”

Loyalty and integrity to the craft. That’s Bayou Sid for you.

People trust a guy who puts out a good product. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That’s why Campbell has been in business, officially for over 37 years. Unofficially, even longer than that. Not just in the south, either. You can find Bayou Magic products coastto-coast now.

They started expanding early on to places like Dallas and Atlanta, but if you’re craving some jambalaya in Joplin, Mo. or some Creole flavor in Culver City, Calif., just run to the store and

start working your magic.

Sid’s products are in most all grocery stores. You can also find Sid’s products online any time. And they have some exciting news upcoming. Bayou Magic is cooking up some more recipes and other options for people who may be looking for healthier options. Stay tuned for that. Go out and buy you some Bayou Magic from Bayou Sid. Tell your friends, although they surely already know.

Maybe you have relatives or friends who are not from the bayou, but you want to put them onto something special. This guy has been doing this a long time, and it shows.

I can’t help but wonder how he has been able not only to sustain a business for this long, but also to grow, adapt and soon even release new products.

Must be magic.

Dr. B: An easy A-plus

athlete at C.E. Byrd High — a member of Byrd’s state champion baseball team as a senior in 1956 — and then at Louisiana Tech, where he was a football team co-captain and three-year letterman.

Then in 1969, he joined the Bone and Joint Clinic in Shreveport and became a star there, a team player who helped not only professional and amateur athletes, but also helped average joes like yours truly walk and bend and run again.

“He was a wonderful man and friend who positively touched a lot of lives,” said Wayne Smith, a four-year starter at point guard for Tech in the 1980s who, as an employee of Dr. B’s for more than 25 years, had a frontrow seat to a career in sports medicine unparalleled in our region. “His was a life remarkably lived.”

He was a wellknown orthopedic surgeon to the subs as well as to the stars, a sideline savior for countless ballplayers, a benefactor of causes good for all, an athlete his teammates loved and depended on, a friend in times of thin and thinner, a “Paw Paw” to 11 grandchildren, and so much more.

But to me, he was the pro who sewed up my cut foot at 2 in the morning,

the compassionate man who barely knew me but secretly paid the $200 that would keep me in college, the steady hand who put all those needles in an irrational back, the patient example who solved problems with trained skill and purposeful whispers.

When Dr. William S. “Billy” Bundrick passed away in December at 85, I was one of many who lost a friend who, for the more than 40 years I knew him, never asked for a single thing.

Before he starred as a surgeon and an orthopedic surgeon with a bedside manner unmatched, he was an outstanding student and

companion in this special crosstown rival Yellow Jacket. “He did so much that nobody even knows about, and if he had a bad day, you never knew it. I can see him spending 30 minutes on the phone or in person with a mom, assuring her that her injured son or daughter was in good hands and would be all right.

“He treated our athletes as he’d treat his own son or daughter,” Wilkinson said. “To see how much he cared and how much time he spent with them … there were weeks when I wondered if he ever went to bed.”

He did. He had to get out of his that night, the first time he fixed me, the time I lost a battle with a broken bottle in the mud of False River in New Roads.

“I am convinced that Dr. Bundrick was the best team doctor in the country,” former Tech Athletics Director Jim Oakes said. “No other team doctor had the impact on an athletic program that Dr. Bundrick had on our program. His loyalty to Louisiana Tech is unparalleled. It is simply impossible to think where this athletic program would be without Dr. B.”

“I was so blessed to work with him for 30 years,” said former Tech athletics trainer Sam Wilkinson, an all-state first baseman at Fair Park who found a loyal

He was, after all, only human.

But he sure didn’t seem that way. The best doctors and nurses, they have another gear, play at another level, use a different ball. It’s something.

Which is what Dr. B was. He was, to use a figure of speech, something. Something exceptional. “Something else.” Something good.

And no good thing ever dies.
