grade, he had no idea the path his life would take. He chose the clarinet not as a first choice, but as a default choice. After trying the flute and the trumpet, he settled on the clarinet because it was the only instrument that he could produce sound from. Even though he played that clarinet with the mouthpiece backwards for the first week, he didn’t give up and eventually became a great clarinet player. Throughout middle school, Thomas and his trusty clarinet were members of the District Honor Band. He had gone from second band, first chair in 6th grade to first band, first chair in 8th grade. His freshman year at North Desoto High School, Thomas did not make honor band at all, so he decided to try something different. That’s when he took a chance on the tenor saxophone and never put it down. After graduating from high school in 2002, Thomas went to Louisiana Tech University where he obtained his B.S. in Accounting while playing in LA Tech’s Band of Pride all four years of undergraduate.
I
f you ask any musician when they fell in love with music, they usually tell you they have loved music from an early age. Saxophonist and Gloster native De’Lontrell Thomas can surely categorize himself as one of those musicians. At only ten years old, he by Ursula Brantley was bitten by the music bug. When the Louisiana Tech University graduate first picked up the clarinet in the 5th

Choosing to pick up the saxophone was a life changing decision that Trell has never regretted. Though he may be an auditor by day, by night he follows his passion dubbing himself the saxxxiest man alive. He draws musical inspiration from artists such as Grover Washington, Jr., Maceo Parker, and Kirk Whallum. In 2017, Trell and seven of his friends turned family decided to start the incomparable Tipsey Band. The Tipsey Band is an outstanding collective of musicians, poets, and lyricists that perform original material as well as covers of popular music. This amazing band from Shreveport were the 2018 winners of the Louisiana Music Prize and have performed in some unforgettable spaces such as the 2019 Essence Fest in New Orleans and the House of Blues in Dallas and Anaheim. They also were given the opportunity to perform before the New Orleans Chapter of the Grammys at the Jazz Museum in New Orleans. Even after playing in all these unforgettable places, Thomas does not forget where he came from. He still plays saxophone for his home church, Mount Mariah Baptist Church in Kingston, LA and for Desoto Fellowship Church in Gloster, LA. He was also the house musician for Bon Temps Coffee Bar in Shreveport’s Red River District before its unfortunate closing. Whenever you are in a room with De’Lontrell Thomas and his sax, you are sure to have a good laugh and hear some good music. He is an energetic presence that lives by the saying “No music, no life. Know music, know life.” His favorite type of music to play is Smooth Jazz R&B because he loves taking a popular R&B/Hip-hop song and using his sax as the voice of the singer. To him, there is nothing better than someone coming to him after a set and saying, “Trell,
you sure can make that thing talk! Music connects us all no matter who you are or where you come from. There is nothing like good music to change your mood or have you feeling nostalgic. When he’s not playing music, he loves to listen to R&B, Hip-hop, Old School Soul Music, and whatever songs the Tipsey Band happen to be working on at the time. Recently, he has been heavy into various 80s artists such as Bobby Brown, Rick James, and the underrated group Cameo. Trell is currently pursuing his newest hobby, photography, as well as playing solo shows at places like Fat Calf Brassiere here in Shreveport. He is currently booked to perform at destination weddings in Cancun and Bali in 2021. As far as up and coming musicians, his best advice is to be yourself. Thomas strongly believes that no one can be you better than you, so strive to be the best version of yourself that you can be.

of Mole & mEZCAL
T
wo of Mexico’s most time-honored culinary traditions are mole (pronounced moh-lay) and mezcal. Both include their own intense blend of flavors that defies description, which makes each equally as mysterious as they are delicious.
Mole is unmistakably Mexico’s national dish. It’s generally used in the U.S. to describe a particular type of sauce—one spiced with earthy, rich flavors. The reason for the variety is that the word “mole” derives from the Aztecs’ molli (or mulli), which just means “sauce.” So, if you hear anyone refer to “mole sauce,” they are being redundant. And while chocolate might appear to be the primary ingredient that has come to define mole, there are actually over 40 different forms of the sauce, and most don’t even include chocolate. A properly done mole will take hours to prepare, sometimes even days, with ingredients varying according to the individual sauce. Traditionally ingredients are from five different categories: chiles, at least two different types;

sour ingredients such as tomatoes or tomatillos; sweet ingredients, like dried fruits or sugar; spices; and thickeners, like bread, nuts or seeds. Once the paste is formed, it’s
mixed with water or broth, and then simmered until it’s thick. Once made, mole is a thick, dense sauce, will never be runny, and won’t taste like chocolate, or chili, or garlic, or cinnamon. It will taste like mole—a melding of New World and Old World flavors! Mezcal is a Mexican spirit made from the heart of the agave plant. And, unlike tequila, which is made using only blue agave, mezcal comes from over 30 varieties of agave. This, coupled with countless variations in the distillation process, allows for an astonishing variety of mezcals (which include ingredients like cinnamon, pineapple, plums, cloves, and even raw meat). Today, 80% of all mezcal production comes from the southern state of Mexico, Oaxaca. As opposed to tequila, which is limited to the use of ‘Blue Agave,’ mezcal production comes from a variety of wild agaves that grow in the higher altitudes of the Oaxaca region, and can take anywhere from 6-8 years to mature before they are ready for harvest. Some wild agaves used for mezcal productions, such as the Arroqueño, can take up to 20 years to reach maturity.
your kindred spirit and you’ve got to try a few varieties. As mentioned, mezcal comes from over 30 varieties of agave and is coupled with countless variations in the distillation process, thus you absolutely should not judge based on a past experience or just a couple of mezcals. There are so many flavor profiles to match many palettes, unless you just hate tequila/agave. So, head over to your favorite Mexican restaurant in Shreveport and Bossier City where mezcal is certain to be offered in an assortment of cocktails or margaritas. Just remember, if you are having it for the first time, treat it with respect—you are having a distillate with an average of 48% alcohol. Take it slow. Soon enough you will give into its charm.
Mezcal’s are known to have a distinct smoky flavor which comes from the cooking process of the agaves’ heart (called piña) after the harvest. Piñas are roasted in an underground oven heated with river rocks and pine wood or mesquite, then covered and cooked from 3-5 days depending on the elevation and weather (unlike with tequila, where piña’s are steamed in autoclaves or brick ovens from 8-72 hours). After the piñas have been cooked and fermented, they go through the distillation process. Most of the pot stills are made out of copper, and in certain regions mezcal is distilled in clay pot stills. Mezcales Tradicionales are distilled twice and are never aged. They are bottled young and its alcohol content can range from 45% - 55% (90-110 proof ). As a comparison, tequila comes in at 40% or 80 proof. If you’re a fan of tequila and whisky/bourbon, mezcal is

2021 NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS for pets
A
New Year with 365 blank pages is upon us and it's the perfect time for new goals. There are many goals we can set to improve ourselves, such as losing weight, getting more exercise, or eating less, but our pets are often overlooked in our New Year resolutions. And with the love and happiness that they bring us every day, our furry companions' well-being should be one of our top priorities for the New Year ahead. There are many ways to improve our cats and dogs' lives, and the New Year is a great time to get started.
#1 MEASURE FOOD & MORE EXERCISE As most of us know from our personal experience, it’s way too easy to let our pet’s weight get out of control. Over 50% of all dogs and cats in the US are classified as overweight. Obesity is probably the biggest pet healthcare concern. For the New Year ahead, taking on your pet’s protuberant belly should be a number one goal. The first step to prevent overfeeding is to measure your pet’s food accurately. Read the instructions on your pet's food and follow the suggested daily allowance. However, diet is only part of the equation when it comes to your pet’s health and weight. An increase in your pet’s activity is most likely needed to meet these goals. To get more exercise, find something you and your pet love doing together. So

go ahead and get out there and try a new activity with your dog. Hop on a bike, go for a hike, or jump in that kayak. You’ll meet your pet goals and have fun, too! RESOLUTION #2 MORE PLAYTIME Along with more exercise, don’t forget about more playtime. While taking your cat hiking or kayaking probably isn't a practical approach for meeting exercise goals, more playtime definitely is doable! Cats love playing with toys. A cat’s predatory instinct is a great way to get them off the couch and exercise. Try a laser pointer; it’s exciting watching your kitty chase and pounce that ball of light. Don’t forget to video. You might just become TikTok Famous! #3 CREATE A SAFE & HAPPY HOME Just as we clean out the clutter in our home from time to time, we need to do the same thing for our pets. Stop holding on to those old, tattered, and dirty pet toys. Now’s the perfect time to start fresh and give your pet a new and fun toy to play with. Out with the old, in with the new! Also, our pets need safe and entertaining places to rest and play. Make sure any potentially harmful substances, such as medications or chemicals, are kept where your pet cannot easily reach.
#4 VET CHECK-UP & ID To keep your pet healthy and help detect any potential problems early, have a veterinarian check-up at least once a year. Ensure that all their vaccinations are up to date. Also, at this time, check that your pet has up to date tag and microchip information. The best way to ensure your lost pet makes their way safely home is to ensure that all their information is correct. #5 GROOM MORE OFTEN Grooming keeps your pet’s coat shiny and healthy by removing excess fur from their coat and distributing oils from the skin to the fur. As a bonus, this also reduces the amount you find on your clothes and furniture. But the real bonus is that pets love to be groomed, and they love the bonding aspect. So go ahead… schedule some daily grooming time for the New Year and show your pet how much you love them. With our furry friends being such an important part of our lives, the New Year is a great time to commit to making their health and well-being an even bigger priority. What will your New Year’s resolution be?

n spite of the many hardships, twists and turns, inconveniences and losses we have experienced in 2020, many of us can reflect on this year and acknowledge the blessings we have. Proverbs 22:9 tell us, “Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.” Whether help comes in the form of love and friendship or in material or monetary fashion, everyone needs a little help at some time in their lives. We have listed some of Shreveport and Bossier Cities’ reputable and worthwhile non-profits. If you have someone on your Christmas shopping list that has everything or is especially difficult to buy for, consider a gift to one of these agencies in their name. Even if you’ve finished with gift shopping, SB Magazine encourages you to give what you can to help those in need.
Robinson’s Rescue Robinsonsrescue.org/make-a-donation Since 2008, Robinson’s Rescue has helped thousands of animals each year receive affordable spay and neuter surgeries, reducing the number of puppies and kittens born in northwest Louisiana by millions. By removing the financial obstacle through affordable pricing and securing individual donor and grant funding, all pet owners can afford spay and neuter services. The Renesting Project renestingprojectinc.org
Michael Sean Powell and his brother, Roy, grew up watching their mother struggle to raise two sons on her own. Double shifts and multiple jobs to provide for her family, she found money was still scarce. Christmas was a bleak time with few if any gifts.
The Renesting Project serves homeless clients of social service agencies by providing furniture and household goods as they transitioned into permanent housing. The faith-based program, Olive Branch was created in an effort to serve families and individuals that were transitioning from homelessness but had a source of income, either through employment or supplemental income. Our Sweet Dreams Program offered NEW mattresses, box springs and bed frames to a limited number of applicants through the Renesting Project and Olive Branch Programs. Available funds determine the number of mattresses we were able to provide.
In his brother’s memory, Mike created Roy’s Kids in 2010 to help single parents with limited income. Roy’s Kids also collaborates with other charities throughout the year on various events doing whatever it takes to help as many children as possible have the fun and fulfilled childhood they deserve.
In 2017 the Renesting Project revised the mission statement to “provide gently used furniture and household items to those in need“. All three programs have now been rolled into one, the Renesting Project Program and services have expanded to include not only those transitioning from homelessness but those at risk of becoming homeless.

he Christmas season is officially upon us and that means Christmas trees everywhere in a variety of sizes, colors, and themes. The Christmas tree is known worldwide for being a staple during this time of year. For many households, the family Christmas tree is the center of traditions that spans generations. People around the world decorate the trees in their homes with preschool ornaments and other family mementos along with other vibrant colors and lights. Stores, shopping plazas, hotels, and all types of businesses take the time to make sure they display their trees and other Christmas decorations to get everyone into a jolly mood. From the immaculate tree in Rockefeller Center to the adorably small ones we place on work desks, Christmas trees are one of those things that have a way of getting folks into the Christmas spirit. Unlike the true meaning of Christmas, most people do not know the story behind the Christmas tree. The history of how this symbol came to be is quite interesting and goes back much further than one might think.

The history of the Christmas tree begins with the celebration of winter solstice. Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere’s shortest day is somewhere between December 20 and 23 while the Southern Hemisphere’s shortest day of the year is sometime in June. In ancient times, many people believed that the sun was a god and the winter months meant that the sun god was growing weaker due to illness. The celebration of winter solstice meant that the sun god was finally beginning to get well. The Ancient Romans marked the Winter Solstice with a weeklong cel-
(Christmas Tree Facts) The use of evergreen trees to celebrate the winter season occurred before the birth of Christ.
Ǫ Ǫ
The first decorated Christmas tree was in Riga, Latvia in 1510.
Ǫ
The first printed reference to Christmas trees appeared in Germany in 1531.
Ǫ
Approximately 100,000 people are employed full or part-time in the Christmas tree industry.
Ǫ
In the United States, there are more than 15,000 Christmas tree farms. There are approximately 350 million Christmas trees growing on U.S. farms.
Ǫ
Ǫ
Ǫ
The most popular Christmas trees are: Scotch pine, Douglas fir, noble fir, Fraser fir, balsam fir, Virginia pine and white pine. Besides evergreens, other types of trees such as cherry and hawthorns were used as Christmas trees in the past. In 2012, 35% of real Christmas trees sold were from chain stores or garden centers/nursery, 24% from cut and harvest farms, 15% from retail tree lots, and 15% from non-profit groups.
ebration called Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. Citizens of every social class would feast and enjoy each other’s company while celebrating the coming of green and bountiful farms. They would decorate their homes with evergreens since plants and trees that stayed green all year were special and were believed to keep away evil and sickness. The Ancient Egyptians had similar beliefs and decorated their homes with palm leaves and branches.

Though Winter Solstice is the foundation of Christmas tree history, the Germans are credited with being the first to display Christmas trees in the way we know of today. It was the 16th century German Christians who began the tradition of decorating trees inside their homes. They would use things like nuts, apples, tinsel, pretzels, and other things to make their trees pop. Sometimes, families would even have a Christmas pyramid of wood instead of a Christmas tree that they would decorate with evergreens. There is a myth that the tradition of having lights on the Christmas trees was started by Protestant reformer Martin Luther in the 1500s. Legend has it that Luther was inspired by the stars he saw one night while writing a sermon and wanted to recreate the view in his home so he added candles to the branches of his family Christmas tree. As German families began to immigrate to America in the 1700s, one of the customs that they brought with them to the new world was the Christmas tree. Nowadays, Christmas trees are a must have for the holiday season, but they were not always viewed that way. The average American during the 1700s was Puritan and Puritans saw Christmas trees as pagan. In their eyes, the Christmas season was a sacred time of year celebrating the birth the Christ. Anything other than a simple church service was blasphemous. There once was a time when the Massachusetts courts outlawed any observance of Christmas. This included caroling, any type of decorating, Christmas trees, and even bonfires. Any celebration of December 25 was punishable by law until the 1840s. Despite the absurdity of the law, German settlers continued to display their family and community trees in their homes and town squares. It was not until the late 1840s that Americans began to embrace the idea of Christmas trees and reveling in the holiday season as we do today. In 1846, an illustration of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children gathered around an enormous, beautifully lit Christmas tree with a slew of presents underneath was featured in England’s Illustrated Landon News. Being that Queen Victoria was deeply loved and admired by her people, anything that her court did had a huge influence on the culture of her time. That is all it took for the tradition of the Christmas tree to become widely accepted. A couple of years later, the same illustration was printed in a popular American publication. Those stringent laws began to change and the idea of spreading Christmas cheer officially became a thing. By the late 1800s, the idea of a joyous Christmas celebration had become the norm in America and even Great Britain. Families were swallowed whole by Christmas cheer and could not wait to show off their decorations. Queen Victoria’s illustration with her family made everyone want the biggest tree they could find and afford. The first Christmas tree lots in America were in New York. The spruces and pines were grown in the Catskills and then transported by ox sleds and steamboats for sale. At the turn of the century, a man by the name of W. V. McGalliard opened the first Christmas tree farm in the Catskills. McGalliard plant-
ed 25,000 Norway Spruce seedlings in 1901 and in 1908 he officially opened to the public. Customers were able to pick their tree, watch it cut down, and take it home to decorate to their heart’s content. It did not matter whether they were poor or rich, citizens from all walks of life did what they could when it came to getting into the Christmas spirit. The discovery of electricity was yet another game changer for the Christmas season. This influenced how folks switched up their decorating ideas for their trees and homes because electricity allowed strings of lights to shine for days on end unlike candles. In the early years of electricity, everyone did not have access to this glorious discovery, but the homes, town squares, and businesses that did were lit up filling the air with that familiar holiday magic. Some of the most famous Christmas trees of our time are the biggest and most breathtaking that many of us have ever seen. For example, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City is known worldwide for being larger than life and decorated exquisitely. This tree that started as a tiny expression of the holiday season by local construction workers eventually became a magnificent backdrop for movies, tv shows, timeless photos, and countless numbers of ice skaters. Each year, a magnificent spruce is found and placed in Rockefeller Center for all the world to gaze upon. Another famous tree is the national tree at the White House in Washington D.C. The lighting of the national tree dates back to the Coolidge Administration in 1923. That year, First Lady Grace Coolidge gave the greenlight for the
District of Columbia Public Schools to place a Christmas tree on the Ellipse south of the White House. The tree was a 48-foot Balsam fir decorated with 2,500 red, white, and green bulbs. On Christmas Eve, President Calvin Coolidge flipped the switch as a local choir and a U.S. Marine Band quartet performed. To this day, the tradition of the national tree still holds strong. Though the Christmas tree market has been dominated by artificial trees since the 1960s, Christmas trees, real and fake, will forever be a huge part of initiating the charm of Christmas. Tree trimming parties have already kicked off and children everywhere are beyond eager to see presents of all sizes underneath. For those that have small children or pets, they must come up with creative ways to protect their tree from the curiosity of the innocent. Today, there are all types of trees erected around the world. You can even order personalized Christmas trees in various sizes, colors, and designs to place in your home, office, or business. What was once seen as a pagan tradition has transformed into one of the most recognizable symbols of the Christmas season. There is nothing like listening to nostalgic Christmas music while relaxing under a warm blanket with a hot mug of cocoa or cider and admiring a lovely lit Christmas tree. Whether you have a dysfunctional family like the Griswalds or your Christmases are parallel to A Wonderful Life, it is a fact that Christmas is a time where memories are made and relived for years to come.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER DENTAL PRACTICES? When establishing Southern Roots, we knew that our staff would help define our practice. Our goal was to find upbeat, kind, and loving staff members that shared our vision for patient care, and we have been very blessed with each addition to our team. The Southern Roots' staff truly love our patients and care about them as if they are family. They take the time to get to know each patient and make them feel at home. Our staff has helped cultivate the culture that makes Southern Roots a desirable place to establish your dental home.
THANK YOU FOR VOTING US BEST DENTAL PRACTICE! Southern Roots Dentistry was founded by owners Dr. James Lowder and Dr. Reed Moore in 2017. The practice was founded on three core values – Faith, Family, and Community. Southern Roots Dentistry offers general, emergency, and cosmetic services to all ages, including children. The doctors and staff enjoy treating entire families as patients and forming a special bond with them. Southern Roots has been voted as a top practice in the area by Locals Love Us, and most recently, all four doctors in the practice were recognized as "Top Doctors" in SB Magazine's Top Doctor Issue. If you want a dental experience that you won't forget, Southern Roots Dentistry is the place to be.

Another characteristic that sets us apart is our desire to continue learning and providing the newest dental technology to our patients. Some of the digital dentistry services that we currently offer include same-day crowns, digital scanning, and SureSmile orthodontic clear aligners. We strive to equip our offices with the best that modern dentistry has to offer so we can continue to provide our patients with an extraordinary experience. Lastly, we strive to have a personal relationship with our patients and make dental appointments enjoyable, memorable, and, most importantly, fun. We love surprising our patients with roses on Valentine's day, King Cakes on Mardi Gras, cookies for Halloween, and fun giveaways throughout the year. We want to "spread smiles" and joy in the Shreveport-Bossier area both inside and outside our office.
WHY IS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? It is equally important to our doctors and staff to be involved in community outreach. We are currently a dental provider for the Abounding Smiles Program, where we partner with the District Attorney's office to help restore a domestic violence victim's smile. We have been fortunate to "do good" in our community by being involved with programs such as Katy Build, A Night to Shine, the Humane Society of NWLA, and AHEC of a Smile throughout the past year. We have been able to donate over $6,000 to these amazing programs that impact our local communities in such a big way. WHAT IS NEXT? October 1, 2020, marked our three-year anniversary, and we are looking forward to an exciting fourth year. We recently opened a second location on Kayla Street off of Youree Drive, and we will be expanding to the North Bossier/Benton area in the near future. In the last couple of years, we have added two amazing doctors to our team – Dr. Carlee Gilley and Dr. Laura Earnest. We are growing and are excited to have the opportunity to bring our patient-centered mindset to serve more of the Shreveport-Bossier area.

BAYOU STATE ROOFING is a locally owned and operated company that specializes in Residential and Commercial Roofing. For 8 years, they have served the Shreveport Bossier area, and most recently helped those in need of roofs and repairs in Lake Charles after Hurricane Laura. Bayou State is licensed and insured to specifically work on roofs, while many roofing companies and contractors do not have roofing on their liability insurance. Out of state roofers, builders, and contractors are not bound by the warranties of Louisiana. They are also not here to personally answer questions and help with your specific needs. They go back home and you’re left with their possible mistakes. Bayou State works with you from beginning to end and after the job. They aren’t done when the roof is up. They want to make sure you’re happy and safe in your home. 850 STONER AVE SUITE D, SHREVEPORT, LA 71101

At Rain Pro Roofing our reputation can only be attributed to customer service being our number one priority. Since we opened our doors, we have averaged more than 500 roofs per year while maintaining an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. We have also been voted in top 3 by Locals Love Us and have been featured in SB Magazine Best Of. Our customer service is the key. Being a small company we are hands-on. I am the owner, and when we put on a roof, I am there. I insure you have the best possible experience by understanding your needs and insuring you are satisfied with our process, and results. We have been very blessed to not only have our community support us, but to trust us with their home repairs, more than we ever imagined. We only use top brand shingles by TAMKO, CertainTeed and GAF. We work hand-in-hand with insurance companies to make sure you get your full coverage, and we'll work with you to complete paperwork and verify that the claim is properly handled. You can't go wrong using a local, family owned company like Rain Pro Roofing that truly cares about customers and works hard to maintain the best reputation. - Reno Arnold, Owner

HAVENS forANGLERS
VISITING SHREVEPORT
If you unwrapped a new fishing rod and reel this Christmas, you may be excited to get out on the water. Whether you are visiting or a local, here are 5 havens for anglers in and around Shreveport.
S
hreveport, Louisiana, offers some great fishing spots for every level of fisherman. The most popular catch in most of these bodies of water is bass, but with a bit of creativity and bait-switching, you may be surprised at the range of fish in these waters.
If catching some fish is on your outdoor agenda, whether you’re a local or just stopping in for business, you’ll be spoilt for choice as to where to spend your fishing hours. Here are our favorite 5 havens for anglers visiting Shreveport. ***** #1 - Caney Lake If you’ve been wanting to catch a lunker bass or white perch, then Caney Lake should be on your bucket list of fishing spots. The growth of various aquatic grasses in the lake makes it a good place to fish successfully using wacky worms, chatter bait, or plastic lizards. Caney Lake is flat and wide open, and you’ll find fishing on the north-east side in the Five Fingers area to be best for fishing early in the season. You’ll find plenty of fish along the off points, creek channels, and humps, or you may spot them under the boat houses.
You can rent a stand-up paddle board, gas, fishing tackles, or buy a hot meal from Hooks Marina. Several fishing tournaments are also hosted by Hooks Marina for bass and crappie throughout the year. For all your water activities, from fishing to water skiing with the family, you can rent a boat from Invert Sports. #2 - Lake Bistineau Fishermen will find fishing at Lake Bistineau a challenge. It may look like it’s a swamp because of the wide-trunked cypress trees and tupelo gum trees throughout. The shallow waters are home to species such as bream, red-ear sunfish, largemouth and yellow bass, and blue and flathead catfish. As you make your way through the channels, you’d need to be careful of submerged stumps. With the majority of the lake being in wooded areas, it’s a good idea to learn the lay of the land beforehand to make navigation easy. If you’re on the main channels, you’ll find markers along the way showing the direction of North or South. You’ll learn about more than just fish on Lake Bistineau. Making your way to the sloughs or the flats, you’ll notice SBMAG.NET

Toledo Bend
#3 - Caddo Lake Caddo Lake is a popular fishing destination for bass anglers, as they dream of catching the lunker bass like that of Sean Swanks. He set a new record with a bass weighing 16.07 pounds. There’s good seasonal fishing opportunities at Caddo Lake, with blue catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, red-ear sunfish, saugeye, and crappie. It would be wise to take an assortment of lures with you, such as flukes, spinnerbaits, lipless crank baits, and A-rigs. If you’re looking to use live bait, then shop at Northwood Bait and Tackle as you’ll be able to find red and blue worms, rosy reds, and more here.
that some signs have been hung on trees so that people can identify them. Before heading out, you may want to stop at Bacon’s Tackle for some worms, spinnerbaits, or jigs. When your fishing day comes to an end, stop in at Wilson’s Steak and Seafood, where you can enjoy some pacific oysters, crawfish, and catfish.
MASK NOW so we can
There are 14 boat ramps around Caddo lake that you can launch from. If you haven’t taken your own boat, you can rent one from Shady Glade Resort. For breakfast or lunch, you can stop in at Drift Inn Landing, or have them deliver your food to the side of your boat. They serve breakfast all day, and you’ll find their menu has everything from burgers to crawfish and shrimp on it.
‘Tis the season for parties and celebrations. With the holidays upon us, let’s work together so we can get back to the life we love in Louisiana. Wear a mask now to protect yourself, your family and neighbors—so we can party later! Learn more about ways to protect yourself at bcbsla.com/covid19

Lake Bistineau
#4 - Cross Lake Cross Lake is a hive of activity, with families enjoying a day of fishing and waterskiing. It’s a great spot for beginner or intermediate fishermen, known for regular catches of bass weighing 7 pounds or more.
Here you’ll be able to go fishing for those deep water lunkers and put those blade baits to good use. Different baits, like artificial jigs, traps, shallow diving crank baits, spoon, and tail spinners can be used to lure the fish. You can always stop at T oledo
The average depth of the lake is around 10 feet, which is shallow compared to others. If you have a fish finder, this would be a good spot to make use of it. Apart from the great opportunities to catch big bass, you might score spotted brass, catfish, black and white crappie, bowfin, and red-ears.
Town and Tackle for all your fishing needs, and you can get your fishing license here as well.
For fishing between the trees, you may want to try plastics or shallow water crank bait. You’ll find that flipping jigs and trick worms will work to catch bass and other fish. If you didn’t pack any shallow water crank bait, then you can stop in at Bass Pro Shops and pick some up.
Conclusion
Grab a bite to eat at Port Au Prince Restaurant, where you can try the catfish and fries or their rib eye steak. You’ll find that their homemade remoulade is worth the trip even if you aren’t fishing.
Shreveport and its surrounding areas offer some amazing fishing if you just know where to go and what you’re fishing for. No matter what the season, these 5 fishing havens will provide a great experience that will have you wanting to come back for more.
#5 - Toledo Bend A wide variety of fish awaits the anglers who fish on Toledo Bend. Although the lake has been rated the best bass fishing lake in the USA by BASSMaster, there’s an abundance of other fish to look out for, including bream, crappie, and some large catfish.
If you’re mid-lake and want something to eat, pop-into Fisherman’s Galley, where you can try the freshly fried fish, shrimp, and crab nuggets or fried chicken.
Wherever you choose to spend your fishing hours, make sure you have a valid fishing license, which you can get at local vendors or online at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

S
urprise!!! The Avocado is a fruit— not only is it a fruit but it belongs to the berry family; hence it’s fleshy pulp and seed. Berry interesting-but there’s a whole lot more about the avocado says, avo-biased, Chef Raul of Pepito’s, that you’ll find interesting.
SUPERFOOD OF FOODS: Avocados are the superheroes of fruit! They pack in more potassium than bananas. They are a good source of antioxidants, fiber, and monounsaturated fat. This “good” fat has been linked to a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. WHAT DO OYSTERS & AVOCADOS HAVE IN COMMON: Avocados, like oysters, have a high concentration of nutrients that are key to sexual health. Both are loaded with Vitamin E, often referred to as the “sex vitamin,” which promotes the production of hormones essential in rousing attraction, mood and desire. For Centuries, the amorous connotation stayed with Avocados so much that in the 1920’s an Avocado Advertising campaign denied the Avocados aphrodisiac properties to tempt people into trying the “risqué fare.” This reverse psychology strategy worked, and Avocados became a popular commodity. THE ORIGIN OF GUACAMOLE: It all started during the 14th Century when the indige-

nous Aztec people of Southern Mexico used a type of mortar and pestle to mash-up a plant they called ahuacuatl into a creamy texture then slathered it over bread (tortilla). The Spanish conquistadors caught a whiff of this buttery concoction and brought it back to Europe renaming it aguacate; thus, the global popularity of guacamole began. As we all know, by the time it reached the U.S. the name morphed into Avocado. HOLIDAYS AND GUACAMOLE: Guacamole always looks delicious, especially during the holidays with its colors of green and red. Chef Raul suggests for your next holiday fiesta try serving your guac in a margarita glass rimmed in seasoning salt. Edible flowers such as pansies and hibiscus will transform your guacamole into a delicious bouquet. You can even shape your guacamole into a Christmas Wreath with tomatoes and cilantro as holly. Pepito’s & Co. invites you to join them for the holidays were your guacamole is prepared from the heart with the soul in mind. Pepito’s & Co. wishes you and your family:

W
e are coming up on one of the most celebrated nights of the year – New Year’s Eve.
I think we all know that this year will be one celebration like no other we’ve ever had. That is, if we follow CDC guidelines. I had hoped and prayed that the Covid-19 vaccine would have been administered by now and we could all take a collective sigh of relief. We could all look forward to 2021 with a bit more joy in our hearts than what we have experienced this past year. We still can, if we all decide to have a positive mindset. We can still follow CDC suggestions and be safe as we gather together to ring in the new year. I believe we can go to smaller group parties and maintain our social distance. We can go festive and wear masks that reflect a “New Year’s” motif – maybe have a prize for the most creative, most glamorous or most outrageous face covering. The traditional countdown to the New Year can still take place on a smaller scale but with just as much enthusiasm. Speaking of count downs, how did that get started? To answer that question, let’s start at the beginning. New Year’s is one of the oldest and most universal of all traditions. Unchanged for over 4,000 years, it began in ancient Babylonia in Mesopotamia and was tied to the pagan feast that we call “Christmas” today. This festival renewed the world for another year and eventually found it’s way to Rome by way of Greece. It was a time of reveling, heavy drinking, orgies and ended with human sacrifices. Julius Caesar, the Roman Emperor declared January first as the New Year. Let’s fast-forward 421 years to around 375 A.D. when the Emperor Constantine introduced Christianity to the Roman empire. The New Year’s celebration continued, on various days according to which calendar was being used at the time. With the influx of immigrants joining the Christians, church fathers found themselves facing a multitude of pagan customs. Rather than fighting an uphill battle, the Catholic Church fathers struck a compromise and made SBMAG.NET

Christmas, the advent and the New Year a celebration of the birth of Christ. Human Sacrifice was hopefully taken off the list of party games. Since then, many new traditions surrounding the New Year’s celebration have evolved. The New Year Countdown is just like a countdown for a race or the launching of a spacecraft. It’s the start of something new and exciting. It’s when everyone in every corner of the world counts from 10 to 1. As the clock strikes 12 in their respective time zones, the old year passes and a new year begins. There’s cheering, couples kissing, spectacular fireworks, champagne toasts, Auld Lang Syne,

confetti and streamers – all in celebration of hope that the New Year may bring. This year, we may not be traveling too far from home for Christmas and New Year’s but we can still dream about the best places to be on this night of celebration. Sydney is the first place where New Year’s celebrations start which could make you among the first ones to greet the New Year. The fireworks at Sydney Harbor are said to be breath-taking against the backdrop of the harbor-bridge and the Sydney Opera House. If the Governor hadn’t cancelled New York City’s celebration, you would be among the 1 million plus people standing shoulder to shoulder in Times Square to watch the “ball” drop. Covid ruined that. Cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles have also adopted ball drop events by incorporating some local traditions in it. Those too, have undoubtedly been nixed. In London, the price of a ticket will have you standing on the banks of the Thames River watching the fireworks as Big Ben rings in the New Year.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong is an unforgettable experience. Watching the performances of amazing artists and dancers from your hotel balcony in Victoria Square will provide memories for years to come. Dubai has become a busiest tourist destination in recent years and New Year’s Eve is no exception. You’d be able to compare the altitude of the fireworks show as you stand at the foot of one of the tallest buildings in the world, Burj Khalifa. Tokyo also boasts an amazing firework display as well as parties that last throughout the night. You may choose to experience the spirituality of New Year’s Eve in one of the many Japanese temples where a monk will ring a bell 108 times to purify souls from any worldly means.
Celebrating New Year’s Eve in a freezing cold location like Vancouver is a unique if not chilling experience. You may have to Eskimo kiss your partner (rub your noses together – masked of course). Vancouver also has two shows on New Year’s Eve. The first is family friendly at 9 PM and the show at midnight can get wild. New Year’s Eve is just another “one night in Bangkok” because there’s always a party going on. It’s incredibly hard to compete with this mentality.
Cape Town, South Africa offers countless performances by artists and cultural dancers – all mostly free for everyone. Free is good.
Which brings me back to your mindset – your approach to New Year’s Eve 2020. No, it won’t be the same as last year. No, you won’t be able to be with as many of your friends and family as you would like. Let’s all agree to just deal with it. If you make it a positive event and as upbeat as possible – while keeping your mask on – you can thumb your nose at 2020 and head into 2021 with positive hope for a much brighter year.
For a more romantic time with your loved one, Venice is your go-to spot. I mean, Venice…the dreamiest place on the continent.
Make your New Year’s Resolution earlier this year. Mine is pretty simple: to have a relaxed evening giving thanks to God that I’m still here for another year.

DECORATING TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS Caution and creativity are key ingredients when decorating your home this holiday season.
Y
ou’ve worked hard to make your home a warm and inviting place to be for your family and friends this Christmas season. Why not do the same for everyone in your neighborhood and those families driving around to see the Christmas decorations? Spread the joy of Christmas through your outdoor decorations by tapping into your imagination and using a little know-how to turn your front door, the yard, your roof line and your walkway into an eye-catching display of holiday cheer. And Caution. You need to use caution or you could end up like Clark Wilhelm Griswold and throw your entire electrical grid into a total blackout. We have provided some tips for your safety and the safety of the neighborhood. Top of the list is:
94
DECEMBER 2020
| SBMAG.NET
1.
Be careful when installing lights on or along the edge of the roof. Lights, power cords, controls and everything else associated with your outdoor lighting has to be approached with safety in mind.
2. The first thing you need to do is to check your decorations to make sure they’re for outdoor use. 3. Next, make sure someone knows you’re doing this work. Better still, have them outside with you. 4. Clear your roof of any debris. It’s easy to slip on leaves. 5. Have good, stable placement when using a ladder and wear shoes that allow for good traction. 6. Do not climb a roof that is steep or wet. 7.
Do not walk with your back toward the eve. People trip easily backing up.
8. Fasten lights securely to your home or trees. 9. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard. 10. Use outdoor rated bulbs and don’t over lamp your fixtures. Most fixtures will have a sticker or label that indicates what wattage to use: 60W”, or 75W or 100W. Respect the label or you may find yourself using a light bulb that will overheat the wiring in the fixture, which will damage the insulation on the wires, which could lead to the unthinkable.
18. If you use any type of adhesive to attach lights to the shingles you may void the warranty of your shingles and you may cause damage when you remove them. 19. Think About the Whole Picture. You have bushes, windows, doors, and trees that can all be lighted. The roof is just one of many things to accentuate. 20. Avoid decorations that sit on top of the shingles. The eves are fine but should be used as highlight and not the bulk of lighting.
11. Because temporary lighting and power connections can be more dangerous than permanent installations, The National Electrical Code includes special requirements for temporary installations that apply in addition to all of the regular guidelines. 12. Use Outdoor-Rated Extension Cords. Indoor extension cords are not made to stand up to any dampness. 13. Watch Out for Flammable Materials. An accent light under a manger to give it a glow will create the effect you’re looking for in your nativity scene. Too much straw or hay around the light could very well burn down the stable. 14. Install Weather-Resistant Receptacles. Always plug temporary outdoor loads into outdoor receptacles that are rated as weather-resistant.
R O O F I N G BAYOUSTATEROOFING.COM
15. Install GFCI Protection. This weather-resistant Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter protection safety device will ground you when you are plugging a cord into an outlet. 16. Avoid damaging your roof. Attach holiday lights with non-metal non-binding materials.
VETERAN OWNED & OPERATED
17. Don’t use something that might damage the wires, and avoid anything with metal in it. Metal conducts electricity. Plastic cable ties are one popular and inexpensive choice for this task. It’s best to use fasteners made for Christmas lights. SBMAG.NET

GOOD TO KNOW UNITED WAY CALENDAR RAFFLE The United Way Calendar Raffle will serve as a kickoff to celebrate UWNWLA’s 100 years of service and encourage community fundraising for Northwest Louisiana this holiday season in a fun and easy way. Funds raised will benefit United Way of Northwest Louisiana and the programs and services they offer in the areas of health, education, financial stability, and essential needs. Due to COVID-19, United Way decided not to host large-scale, in-person events. As a result, there has been a significant decrease in contributions this year. Now, more than ever, United Way needs our community’s support for the organization’s programs and mission. Many will struggle this holiday season to afford their most basic essential needs due to the economic repercussions of 2020. By participating in United Way’s Calendar Raffle today, our community can help those most in need this giving season. The raffle consists of unique daily prizes that will increase in value throughout January 2021. Individuals can purchase a raffle ticket for each prize of their interest and will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win. You can purchase raffle tickets now through December 18, 2020. The drawing for each prize will occur every Friday at 12 p.m. in January 2021 (8, 15, 22, and 29). Individuals can purchase their raffle tickets by returning the mailer to United Way’s office by mail, email, or they can be purchased online at https://unitedwaynwla. org/calendar/. UWNWLA will draw for prize winners on UWNWLA’s Facebook Live: https://www.facebook.com/ unitedwaynwla. OCHSNER LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT WELCOMES DR. JOHN P. HARRIS Dr. John P. simple christmas
D
ecorating for Christmas should be an easy transformation of your everyday home. I learned this lesson eleven years ago. While my kid’s after-school activities ruled our evenings, my job grew demanding. Then December arrived, and my mom passed away from a prolonged illness. My whole world stopped for a moment. Instead of pulling out twelve large bins of decorations, I decided to embrace simplicity. The Nutcracker collection stayed in storage…and I didn’t purchase one new ornament. I found a new theme for Christmas that year. Simple and calm. A new theme that brought peace to our home, and healing to our hearts. I learned to shift the focus from perfect Christmas décor to making memories throughout the season. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, my soul is refreshed as I anticipate our family traditions. Nothing too fancy. We continue a tradition started by my mom many years ago…a Gingerbread Party! We bake, decorate, and eat gingerbread cookies while our favorite Christmas songs fill the house. We sip hot cocoa with marshmallows and end the night with a Christmas movie. Although my kids are older now, they still look forward to the Gingerbread Party most of all. Another favorite family tradition is purchasing a Christmas book for our kids to open on Christmas Eve night. We read the new book and the Christmas story from the Bible before bed. It is never too late to start some meaningful traditions with your family. Think about how you want to make memories…and make it special for your family.

In addition to our traditions, we craft many things by hand. Whether for decoration or gifts, crafting makes for fun family time! Our favorite is stringing dried orange slices to create a garland. It makes our house smell amazing! From watching a tutorial online, we learned how to make our own pompom wreath. We display it every year. Another favorite craft is creating a candy wreath…peppermints hot-glued to a Styrofoam wreath can be hung from a ribbon. By simply displaying spools of ribbon and twine in an ironstone bowl, I create a gift wrap station. Handmade soaps or sugar scrubs are neatly packaged in craft paper and personalized with handwritten name tags. We enjoy taking the time to craft homemade gifts for friends and family. Another simple way to bring Christmas cheer to your home is setting a pretty table. This is by far my favorite way to bless my family. I challenge myself to use items I own to create a festive table. Everything does not have to match. I mix a variety of white plates in several sizes at each place setting. On Christmas Eve, when our extended family joins us, we enjoy a rustic Louisiana Christmas in our barn. Complete with homemade gumbo and red beans and rice. We gather around a bonfire for exchanging gifts and good conversation. There is nothing better than the blessing of a delicious meal and family around the table at Christmas. A simple Christmas is a choice to make, it does not signify insufficiency. In fact, it is the way to celebrate how very blessed we are… with the things that truly matter in life. I am thankful for all the family, friends, and love that surrounds me. And I am reminded of the very first Christmas in the manger…the most important and simple Christmas of all. I encourage you to try it. It is amazing how simplicity can soothe your soul and make your Christmas merry! SBMAG.NET

Uber Santa The next time you call an Uber for a ride you may very well find yourself being chauffeured by the one and only Santa Claus. Jolly Old St. Nick likes to occasionally take a break from his reindeer to get behind the wheel of a car and visit with his riders about what Christmas means to them. 1. How long have you been with Uber? How long have you been Santa? I have been driving Uber/Lyft for about two years. I go to bed early, so I wake up early, allowing me to drive early morning hours. This year will be year 10 of being a Professional Real Bearded Santa. I started as Santa at Bass Pro for Santa Land. 2. What are some of your favorite things to do when not driving/being Santa? When I am not driving Uber/Lyft, I enjoy spending time with Mrs. Claus, our two cats, and Bella & Belle, our two Weenie Dogs, at our Santa House and Christmas Tree Farm in Haughton. Yes, our house is red and white, and I have planted 32 Leyland Cypress Christmas trees along my back fence row ranging from four to eight feet tall. 3. What is your favorite part about what you do? Seeing the Smiles is my favorite part of what I do. Facebook.com/santabobc Sleigh 318-987-1220 Bobbeth96@aol.com SBMAG.NET

Engaged Learning, Christ-Centered Discipleship, Nurturing Community
A K4-12th Christ-centered and classical school driven by a vision for what we want students to love
A love for beauty & the arts
A love for excellence & leadership
A love for truth
ENGAGED LEARNING: Because our teachers love students and love teaching their subjects, they inspire a love for learning among our students. We have the highest ACT scores in the Shreveport-Bossier area, but much more than our scores, we are developing students who excel at learning and who are building the critical thinking skills, wisdom, and character that will serve them long after high school and college. CHRIST-CENTERED DISCIPLESHIP: We believe that the heart of Christian faith is the Good News as seen in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, which tells us that God has a radical love and rescue of us that motivates us to respond in love and obedience to Him. The whole goal of life is to be shaped to know Jesus and reflect Him to others. Discipleship happens best in the context of relationships and grace aimed at transformed lives.
