F

ebruary is such a short month to have so much to pack into this issue of the magazine. We’re focusing on weddings because, people still fall in love and want to get married even during a pandemic. We have tips on how to make the best of your special day along with, as of this writing, the rules of the modified version of Phase 2.

This happened. I had my pesky old cataracts removed and since it was the National Eye Care Month, I thought I’d share that experience with you. Our monthly non-profit spotlight is The Easter Seals. You’d be amazed at all the services this organization provides. We’re also starting a monthly SB Success Story. Jan Middleton, owner of Shreveport-Bossier’s iconic Counter Culture restaurants has graciously agreed to be our guinea pig. She is such a joy to be with, knows how to tell a good story and her journey to success is pretty incredible. I invite you to send me candidates to highlight in our monthly Success Story feature. It’s time we started tooting the horn for our hard-working local folks. Speaking of hard working, this is also our annual Women in Business issue. If you want to know what the women of Shreveport-Bossier City have been doing to get through this crazy year, look no further than our special section. I always get excited and have a sense of pride when I read their amazing stories. Makes me want to shout – “You go girl!” We’re also launching a program to celebrate the inspirational women of our community. Send in your nominations along with a written explanation of why your candidate has been a source of inspiration for you. Send to editor@sbmag.net.

WEDDINGS WITH A

TWIST

P

lanning a wedding is stressful enough without having to worry about whether your governor is going to change the pandemic phase and cut you off at the knees. From the wedding ceremony to the reception to the honeymoon, the bride and groom must follow a whole new set of rules that have nothing to do with what Emily Post’s Book of Etiquette recommends. You might as well throw that book out the window. SB Magazine has put together a “how to” of sorts that you can reference as you dip your toe into the unknown waters of planning your special day amid Covid-19. First, know your phases. You might start with a reputable and calming wedding planner – Mandy Cathey comes to mind – who has kept up to date on the rules you’ll have to follow. A knowledgeable planner will know how many guests you’ll be able to have at the wedding and the reception. As of this writing, Louisiana is in a modified Phase two. This means: F Limited to 25% capacity F Maintain a 6-foot distance between guests (not sure if this includes the bride and groom. Six feet

F F F F

will definitely affect the “You may now kiss the bride” moment in the ceremony.) You’ll have to have timed seating at the reception. No buffet No dancing Service or sales of alcohol must be between 8:00 am and 11:00 pm.

Your rehearsal and dinner that follows will have to get creative. We suggest you choose a venue that can offer a sense of intimacy while maintaining a social distance. You can’t beat Port au Prince. At least if you can’t get cozy with your wedding party, the food will make up for it. The wedding ceremony itself can be performed practically anywhere your imagination can take you. From a grand church sanctuary where your guests can spread out to someplace like La Chute where you can take it to the beautiful and already spacious outdoors. Now, let’s dig into the actual preparations. Choosing the dress, booking the spa, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, hair, makeup, the gifts, the flowers and transportation to and from the venues. It’s enough to boggle the mind. Fortunately, the modified Phase 2 rules aren’t quite as rigid when it comes to these arrangements. And, again, your wedding planner is just a phone call away with a plan. SBMAG.NET

HOW TO CHOOSE A

Diamond Ring

A diamond engagement ring represents love and commitment. Before purchasing your diamond ring, there are a few things to consider.

1.

Pick a Diamond Shape The shape of your diamond is the starting point of choosing your ring’s design. It’s up to you or your partner’s personal preference. No shape is better than the other.

2. Choose a Carat Weight As carat weight increases, so does the price. Choose the carat weight range you’re open to considering, and this will help you narrow down your choice. 3. Pick a Cut Quality Cut quality is the aspect that most dramatically impacts a diamond’s beauty. Excellent and Ideal cut diamonds are some of the most common. 4. Choose a Color Grade Range The goal with diamond color is to choose a diamond that appears white. But you don’t need to pay for a D or E diamond to get a colorless stone. In general, diamonds in the G to I range appear white but cost far less.

Saying yes to the dress will remain relatively the same for you. Happily Ever After is our pick for shopping local. They have a staff that has a knack for putting you in the right dress for your figure type. The showroom is fairly compact so you won’t be able to bring your entire wedding attendants along for the selection party. You’ll have to settle for those few that are closest to you. Speaking of which, they also have a wonderful array of bridesmaid gowns. For your flower girl, The Moppet Shoppe has the best selection of custom-made heirloom dresses by Linda Harris for the little one chosen for this honor. You’ll be able to thumb through her portfolio of adorable dresses and then pop in for a fitting. You might think that there’s no point in making a spa and hair day since you won’t be able to have as many guests as you want at the wedding. Not so, mon Cheri. Did you forget that you’ll have a photographer to capture every moment? We didn’t. We love Avalon for your hair and makeup. This salon has been set up in “pods” with dividing screens between set-ups so that distancing is easy. Make-up artists will always have a mask on as will your hair dresser. You might want to get your mothers in to see Tiffany at Bleu Med Spa early in your planning. She offers a fabulous weight loss procedure that will trim those unwanted inches off the waistline so that the “Mother of the

5. Pick Clarity Grade For Clarity, you should look for a diamond that’s eye clean, meaning you can’t see any blemishes or inclusions with the naked eye. Depending on the shape, you can usually find an eye-clean diamond in the VS1– VS2 range.

6. Compare Diamonds Once you’ve narrowed down your preferred specs for a diamond, compare similar stones to determine which one to buy. You’ll want to consider aspects like how brilliant the diamond is, if it’s eyeclean, and what the price is.

7.

Check the Certification You should consider only GIA Certified Diamonds and AGS Certified Diamonds in your search for a loose diamond.

8. Get an Expert Opinion Get a trustworthy expert opinion. Before making the big decision to buy a diamond, have an expert review your choice. Having an expert’s opinion ensures you get the best diamond for your budget. You’ll also have more confidence in what you’re buying.

Bride” and “Mother of the Groom” dresses look as though they belong on the catwalk. We’re getting down to the details now. Flowers. Thank goodness flowers can’t catch the virus and we don’t think it can be spread by a flower arrangement either. The flower shop at Rose Neath will work closely with you – not too close, mind you – to make your bridesmaid’s bouquets, the groomsmen’s boutonnières, the grooms boutonnière and your bouquet spectacular. Appli-K’s in downtown Shreveport can help you with gifts for your wedding party with a lovely selection of monogram keepsakes. iShuttle is revving up their engines to get you to the ceremony on time and get you out of there so the honeymoon can begin. They know what’s important, after all. Even if you opt for a virtual event, you still need to create those magic moments that make getting married a (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime event. Think of the memories you can share with your children and grandchildren when you tell them, “yes – we got married right in the middle of a life-altering pandemic.” If that isn’t true love, we don’t know what is!

When planning a wedding, your choices are wide open, and the sky’s the limit on the amount of extravagance. However, as we all know, the day of the wedding can be very hectic and full of surprises no matter how well you plan. With dozens of details that need to be taken care of on the big day, it’s a good idea to pass those duties off to a trusted family member, the maid of honor, or maybe even a wedding day coordinator who can take charge of everything. Ask around and look for local reviews to find the best and most affordable coordinators. Make sure to book everyone and everything you need well in advance of the wedding so that you can enjoy this special day. Don’t forget to carefully consider your fiancé's ideas and preferences, too. You can’t make everyone happy, but you want

your soon-to-be spouse to enjoy the day filled with good memories. Make your wedding day the most perfect one with some of the favorite venues and vendors in the Shreveport Bossier area.

Why Choose a Wedding Shuttle with iShuttle?

WEDDINGS • RECEPTIONS • SHOWERS • BACHELORETTE PARTIES • BACHELOR PARTIES

It is our special honor to be part of your special day! Let us help you transport your guests and your wedding party between venues with a personalized shuttle service just for you. With a wedding bus, no guests will end up lost, show up late, or waste time searching for parking. It’s the perfect way to keep your guests organized before arriving at your event.

Travel Reliably & Comfortably

One of the many benefits of a wedding transportation shuttle is that you can relax while you travel and enjoy comfortable amenities such as plush seating, extra legroom, and air conditioning. Additionally, buses offer far more legroom than cars or limousines. Formal clothes can be difficult to move in and are easy to wrinkle; after traveling on a bus, everyone will still be looking sharp. When you call to book your bus, be sure to let your reservation specialist know what amenities you’d like to see on your wedding day, and we’ll make sure you’re matched with the perfect shuttle!

the beauty BOSS’s guide to Extended Beauty by JonPaule Calcote

Long gone are the days of secrecy and taboo when it comes to receiving beauty services and medical enhancements. It seems it is becoming more and more accepted and celebrated by men and women alike. One thing you need to remember is not to go too far reaching for the fountain of youth but to strive to look your personal best at any age.

1

1. Botox

“Botox and dermal fillers are becoming more mainstream medical treatments in refreshing your appearance, but many people still do not know the difference between the two”, says Nurse Practitioner, Owner of Fixx Medical Spa, and my personal injector, Brigette Moss. Botox is an injectable used to relax the muscles in the face to soften or even eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. It has been approved and used as a beauty treatment since 2002 and is one of Brigette’s favorite beauty treatments she offers.

2. Dermal Fillers

As for fillers, they are used to treat areas of volume loss as we tend to lose 1% to 2% percent of our natural collagen each year starting at some point in our late 20’s. Brigette prefers and offers fillers that are hyaluronic acid based. Since hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our bodies, our bodies recognize it. It also holds water volume in our skin and in her opinion gives a more natural appearance.

3. Lash Extensions

Eye lash extensions are in no way a new beauty trend, but undoubtedly one of the most popular these days. This beauty service is one that is constantly growing and evolving. I sat down with Alexandra Swain, owner of The Crown Lash and Beauty Bar, and lash artist of 8 years, to get the low down on lashes. Alexandra extensively studied under a fabulous instructor in Dallas that has provided lash services for A-List Celebs such as Beyonce and Mariah Carey. She explained to me the three most fabulous types of lashes that she artfully provides. The Classic Lash, The Volume Lash and the Russian Volume Lash.

3

Whether it is Classic Lash where a single synthetic lash hair is adhered to a single eye lash hair of your own or the Volume Lash, where a pre-designed synthetic lash fan is applied to an individual lash hair of your own, lash extensions are most certainly a way to wake your eyes up while adding depth and definition on those “no makeup” days.

2

4. Sculpsure Fat Reduction Sculpsure is a

Commonly treated areas for fillers are lips, cheeks, jaw line and nasal folds. Commonly treated areas with Botox are crow’s feet, forehead lines, and deep-set lines between the eyes.

fat reducing treatment provided by Dr. Catherine Vanderloos, owner of Envy Med Spa. This is a procedure in which a medical laser is set to the color that breaks down fat cells in the body, which are then removed naturally by the body’s lymphatic system while not causing harm to the skin, blood vessels or nerves. It is recommended to do two treatments of this procedure, reducing the treated area by 20% each time. This

procedure produces a visible difference and reduction in size to the treated area. The treatments should be done 6 weeks apart and you can continue to see changes 12 to 14 weeks after treatments with absolutely no down time.

4

Diet and exercise are always recommended to expedite the process and maintain results. 5. Morpheus8 Morpheus8 is a skin tightening

procedure that works fabulously with the Sculpsure to tighten the skin after a reduction and size is achieved. It’s often paired together, says Dr. V, as I like to call her, but is a great standalone service to tighten the skin in any area. The Morpheus8 is a radio frequency machine that tightens the skin by using insulated micro 5 needles that heat under the surface of the skin. The most impactful results are achieved by doing 2 to 3 treatments three weeks apart.

7. Semi-Permanent Cosmetics

We are not talking about your grandma’s permanent cosmetics, people! The industry has evolved in many ways from the pigments used to the techniques in application. Nothing is what it used to be. I, myself, offer three types of permanent makeup at the Brow Boutique in Spa Concepts. Microblading, which is a process where a manual hand tool is used to implant a cosmetic pigment into the skin in the form of tiny little hair strokes recreating the natural growth pattern of your own brow hairs. This gives the illusion of textured natural looking three-dimensional brows. The results can last 1 to 3 years. Semi-permanent lip blushing is a service in which a cosmetic lip pigment is tattooed into the skin of your lips enhancing the shape and color using a delicate cosmetic tattoo pen with a kaleidoscope of pigment shades available. The results can last 2 to 5 years.

7

Semi-permanent eye liner is a service where I tattoo in a cosmetic eye liner pigment using the cosmetic tattoo pen defining the eye for stunning eye definition that does not smudge or wash off and can last 1 to 3 years.

Each semi-permanent procedure requires a five week touch up after initial application.

6

Every Vomor installation comes with a specially designed hairbrush to maintain the integrity of your extensions while you rock your luscious new locks. 6. Vomor Hair Extensions

In a delightful get together with Amanda Willis, Lead Hair Designer at Spa Concepts - Ashley Ridge, she gave me all the details on Vomor extensions. Vomor is a line of tape- in human hair extensions that come in over 30 shades to match even the most interesting of hair colors. The extensions are installed by sandwiching a section of your own hair between two pieces of Vomor about a ¼ of an inch away from the scalp, leaving room for growth and natural movement. Since it is 100% human hair, it can be washed, cut and even styled with hot tools. Once you have your initial installation, they will last you 6 to 8 weeks. After that, only a maintenance is required to keep up your fabulous new hair. I’d love to hear from you and answer any questions you might have pertaining to beauty. Email me at jonpaule@sbmag.net

s a child, actress Angelique Feaster Evans always knew that she wanted to be an actress. She would watch shows like Good Times and timeless film icons like the late Cicely Tyson and dream of one day seeing her face on a screen as well. Born in Detroit, Evans moved to Haughton with her family as a small child. They lived there until 5th grade when the family made their way to Dallas. It was in Dallas that Angelique was exposed to the arts world and fell even more in love with the idea of being an actress. She attended the Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy before moving on to the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where her classmates were neo-soul legend Erykah Badu and the late trumpet player Roy Hargrove. Part way through her sophomore year at the Arts Magnet School, Angelique’s family moved back to Haughton and she graduated from Haughton High School. After high school, Evans attended Centenary College where she obtained her B.A. in Speech with a minor in Theatre as well as her master’s in Education Administration. While at Centenary, she was part of their theatre department and performed many times at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. Evans also earned her certification in theatre and speech in Louisiana which allowed her to teach theatre and speech. Evans used that certification when she taught at Oak Terrace Alternative School for ten years. At Oak Terrace, Angelique realized her passion for planting art and culture seeds into the hearts and minds of young people who otherwise would not have that opportunity.

The performance aspect of acting is by far Angelique’s most beloved part of the acting life. She has graced every stage in our area in productions like A Raisin in the Sun, Indigo Blues, and CROWNS. Her film and television credits include a feature on Judging Amy along with co-starring in the Lifetime series The Division with Oscar nominated actress Taraji P. Henson. She has also appeared in several regional and local commercials for places like McBride and Collier and RentBusters. Evans has performed under the direction of Hollywood playwright and screenwriter, Judi Ann Mason, and has shared the stage on several occasions some of Shreveport and Bossier City’s most talented performers. Angelique’s passion for teaching and uplifting the next generation lead her to establish the Mahogany Ensemble Theatre. Mahogany has birthed some amazing young talent like Shreveport native Wil-

“She’s been the one for me since 1953. Garden Park helped her get back home to me.” -Donald Corliss lie Jones who appeared on The Voice and has gone on to become a country star with his face appearing high above Times Square in New York City. Angelique is a strong believer in creating opportunities for yourself instead of waiting around for them to show up. Though she had performed in a few productions in her time, she did not know much about the industry when she began her acting journey. She dedicated her time to learning the industry and began pitching herself to agents in the Dallas market until she was given a shot and the rest is history. She has helped create a platform to showcase the talents of black artists and black productions in North Louisiana. For Angelique, the arts are considered a joy and not a job. She encourages up and coming actors and actresses to always be open to learning and to immerse

SB PETS | by hailey lawson

INVITING YOUR PET

to your Wedding

W

e’ve all heard the traditional wedding saying – something old, something new, something borrowed, and something furry. What’s that, furry? Your wedding is an exhilarating day for family and friends to celebrate, and we all know that weddings can be very stressful, especially if you want to include your pet. But with a little planning, inviting your four-legged friend to the ceremony will be painless. Including your pets in engagement photos and engagement announcements can make the big day that much more personal and special. However, the difficult part will be keeping your pet from stealing the limelight. Many pets are used to posing for the camera, but make sure that the indoor or outdoor setting for the photo shoot is safe for you and your pet.

34

FEBRUARY 2021

| SBMAG.NET

Before the big day, be sure to decide what role your pet will play. Is your pet going to play a large role in the wedding, such as best canine or best feline? Or maybe they’re going to be the ring bearer or walk the bride down the aisle. Dress your pet to impress. Have their collar or leash match the colors of your wedding. Maybe a simple color coordinated satin bow tie or dazzling tux for your furry friend will add the right touch, but be sure it fits properly and is comfortable so that your pet can enjoy the day. Avoid any pitfalls by keeping it simple – a flower or little bow attached to their collar is fun and charming. Also, beware of using choking hazards and poisonous flowers in their wedding attire. Always check with the wedding venue to see if they allow pets. Imagine showing up on your wedding day and you're told that pets are not permitted on the property. Always have some treats and a bowl of water available. It’s a good idea to

take your pet to the venue before the ceremony so that it’s not a new and strange place. While you are there, take a minute to determine a quick exit in case they get upset, too excited during the wedding, or require an emergency potty break. Tell your photographer that you want to include your pet in some of the wedding photos. This allows the photographer to plan photo ideas involving your pet and also allows them to prepare for unpredictable pet behavior. Remember, even with a well–behaved pet, there is no guarantee that they’ll behave on your big day. The day’s commotion can be increasingly stressful for your pet, so make sure they can handle the excitement. Make sure and let your guests know that your pet will be at the wedding. Provide this information on the save-the-date cards and then again on the invitation. This will warn anyone with allergies and let them plan in advance so they can enjoy your beautiful wedding day. It’s great fun to have your beloved pet around on this special day, but you don’t want to worry about them the whole time. It might be a good idea to hire a pet sitter to bring your pet to the ceremony, watch them during the ceremony and reception,

and take them home so that way you don’t worry about their comfort and safety or if they’ve ravaged your wedding cake. As all animal lovers know, pets can be unpredictable – which is something you definitely don’t want on this most special day. By taking a little time to plan ahead, both you and your pet will be less stressed and able to enjoy the big day.

re leaders born, or are leaders created? The best leaders most definitely have both - they have good instincts and work hard at what they do. This is especially evident in business. Business is the driving force behind our economy, and small business is unquestionably the backbone of our economy. leaders help shape the world we live in. Women are expanding their roles as leaders in business and are making great strides in the world of business, as well as other professions. OCHSNER LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT

chsner LSU Health Shreveport is leading the way in diversity and equity in healthcare for North Louisiana by making it a central part of the system’s culture. Ochsner LSU Health has mobilized a Diversity and Inclusion Council, which includes various resource groups whose sole purpose is advocating for minority groups within the system. Ochsner LSU Health is committed to diversity in leadership and values the different views, opinions and personal journeys that create a better place to work and deliver healthcare. We salute the many women leaders and physician leaders at Ochsner LSU Health for their dedication to bringing the highest quality care to all people of North Louisiana, as well as their commitment to forwarding cultural progress. How do you feel about Ochsner LSU Health’s efforts to bring diversity and equity into the culture? “I am proud to serve in a system that emphasizes diversity and equity within the culture. I appreciate Ochsner LSU Health’s efforts to not only emphasize diversity and equity as it pertains to gender and ethnicity; they take it a step further to also consider age, physical ability, religious

“I experience the culture of diversity and equity every day I go to work at Ochsner LSU Health. Aside from talking about diversity and inclusion and hiring leaders to focus on those efforts, Ochsner LSU Health shows its commitment to diversity and equity through its hiring and promotion practices. When I work with colleagues from all different backgrounds and walks of life, I am confident that we are providing the kind of healthcare that everyone in our diverse community can benefit from.” —Dr. Valerie Lockhart Welch: Chief Medical Information Officer What are some of the challenges you’ve faced as a woman in the medical field? “One of the most challenging expeDr. Mila Shah-Bruce riences is juggling my personal and professional life. I am a mother of two and a wife, in addition to being a physician. I am the only one that cleans out the fish tank, a hamster cage and a guinea pig cage; feeds the dog; and puts dirty clothes in a hamper. I have a very supportive family, but juggling a medical career with family is challenging. However, as a working mother, this helps me relate more with my working patients. My patients and I often share stories about our families and the endless trials and tribulations of parenting. It helps me to make a real connection with my patients.” —Dr. Mila Shah-Bruce: the only OB/GYN in Northwest Louisiana specializing in Pediatric Obstetrics and Gynecology “I began my career in a field that was predominantly male, and I found being a female colleague alongside males offered additional input to all our training. We struggled alongside each other on difficult days and could celebrate our successes together throughout our training. I honestly feel that there is no disadvantage in being female. As we all continue to learn that the more diversity we have, the more ideas are brought to a group, and better growth and patient care occurs.” —Dr. Jacquelyn Bowers: Director of Emergency Services, North Louisiana Do you have any advice or words of encouragement for girls interested in the medical field today? “Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want and to stand up for yourself. Many of my male colleagues got their raises and supplements just by asking, and the women I work with sometimes assume that they should just keep plugging away for the same money even when more work is added.” – Dr. Lauren Beal: Division Chief of Internal Medicine & Pediatrics

“Talk to your school counselor or doctor about how to explore the options in the medical field. There are countless opportunities that many people do not know about in medicine. Everyone thinks about a doctor or nurse, but there are physical therapists, radiology technicians, physician assistants, nutritionists and administrators who do not directly care for patients but play a major role in every aspect of healthcare. Also, you do not have to choose between having a career in the medical field or having a family. Never limit your goals solely based on your gender.” —Dr. Mindie Kavanaugh: Oncology Service Line Physician Lead “I recommend strengthening your communication skills because you, at the end of the day, have to be able to communicate with patients, their family members and your colleagues effectively. Also, I live by the golden rule, to treat others the way you want to be treated, and I think that is a very important part of taking care of patients.” —Dr. Kristy Waltman: Director, OB/GYN Specialists at Ochsner LSU Health — St. Mary Medical Center “When people tell you that you can’t, just remember that you can, and keep moving forward.” —Dr. Laurie Grier: Chief Quality Officer

DCI RECORDS MANAGEMENT CENTER

W

ith over 1 million square feet of warehousing in Shreveport, Records Management has been the most reliable and consistent warehousing, trucking, storage, and distribution center since 1985. Renee Petree and her partner started this business 36 years ago, and she has built it from the ground up. It is family-run, and she says what makes her happy is that her sons Spencer and Brad Petree choose to be there. She doesn’t, and won’t, ask them to be there, and she is so proud that this is what they have decided to do. Now expanding into Monroe with 500,000 square feet of warehousing, she simply says that the key to success and the best advice she can give is to “…just show up… You have to be there.” Do the work and work hard. Renee did just that. She built a company that started with storage and warehousing, then developed into trucking, shredding, and distribution. With six warehouses in Shreveport alone, Records Management strives to be, and succeeds, to be confidential, trusted, and reliable. What is her philosophy? “Everything we do is based on relationships and trust. You have to have that in every aspect.”

Located in the shadows of downtown Shreveport on North Common Street, The Records Management Center is a locally owned family business that’s been serving NWLA for over 35 years. We offer you a full-service solution and the last stop for securely managing your records. We began offering records management services in 1985 as a reaction to several problems with other storage solutions that haven’t changed much in 2020. The most common of these outdated solutions is office space storage, which is unsightly cluttered space that could be better utilized growing your business, mini-warehouse storage, which never delivers to your office and is inconvenient and more expensive, and basement storage where your records could be open to unauthorized personnel with no long term upkeep or supervision. These and most other options are also subject to water, fire, and other security hazards. Our solution? A well placed, over 81,000 sq.

ft. building where your records are safely stored on steel racks off the ground. The entire building is camera maintained with central station security alarm system. We go way beyond simple storage! As the last stop for your file storage needs, we offer file retrieval, pick up and delivery, vault storage, specialty records storage, and secured shredding destruction. Perhaps best of all, your numbering and filing system remains unchanged, and there is NO CHARGE FOR INITIAL PICK UP if they are readily accessible. We very much want to earn your business and take the stress of clutter off your plate. through changes in the function, as well as the esthetics, of a smile. Every day is rewarding, and I get to see people’s lives transform for the better.” Dr. Haynie said the best part of practicing orthodontics is seeing the look on her patients’ faces after getting their braces off. “There’s a certain excitement that builds when a patient is about to see their new smile. It never gets old. To help someone in such an evident way is unbelievably rewarding.” In recent years, technology has significantly advanced the field of orthodontics, improving outcomes and comfort levels for patients. Dr. Haynie and Foster Orthodontics remain on the cutting-edge of technology. “Rather than the impression material used when I was a kid, we now scan our patients’ teeth and 3-D print their models in our office. This allows for precision bracket placement, saving patients’ valuable time. 3D-printing has also opened the door to our own in-office system of clear aligner therapy. We are able to take the process of clear aligners from start to finish, digital design to fabrication, all here within our four walls.”

While at Texas A&M, Dr. Haynie received a degree in Biomedical Science while exploring a minor in Art. Her passion for integrating science with art led her to the UT-Houston School of Dentistry, where she graduated at the top of her class. After completing an orthodontic residency in Houston, Dr. Haynie is thrilled to return home to practice in the Shreveport-Bossier community. “Orthodontics is about so much more than straightening teeth. It is about improving health and self-confidence

Dr. Haynie stays active with her husband and dental school sweetheart, Dr. Jeffrey Kerst, a general dentist. They wed in August 2020 after two postponements due to COVID-19. “It has certainly been an adventure to get married, move states, and each begin a career all in the midst of a pandemic, but challenges are a part of life. I encourage any young woman to keep on persevering when challenges present themselves. You never know what little girl out there is looking up to you. autreau Interiors was started by Designer Laurie Gautreau five years ago. From there, the business has evolved from a design studio with two employees to a full-service design firm and showroom with 8 employees. In 2020, the growing business took a huge leap of faith to expand into a 3600 sq. ft showroom and office space in Towne Oak Square and changed its name to Gautreau Gallery and Interiors. We hope the new location can offer a unique shopping experience to the Ark-La-Tex by allowing shoppers to work with decorators to customize their space. The Showroom houses a Visual Comfort Lighting Gallery, plus a Design Center with upholstery, fabrics, wallpaper, and bedding. The extra square feet also allows customers to shop straight from the floor, something so important right now as delays are seen across the board due to Covid. esolutionist, professional, compassionate, and pragmatic describe Bessie Taylor Casey, the owner and Chief Operating Officer of BesCa Land Services, LLC, established thirteen years ago. BesCa Land Services, LLC offers services to individuals or families who own land in the state of Louisiana and who are not currently in possession of inherited property. Many clients will or have leased property to oil and gas companies under these circumstances and, by doing so, have created a tremendous problem for some of those companies. It is important to identify all heirs whether deceased or living before legal counsel is retained to prepare a succession or probate that could be cost effective. Casey is committed to resolving property issues in a systematic and accurate manner, working to ensure that all parties are included and informed and that decisions are fair and equitable for those involved. Additionally, to maintain a strong knowledge base, Casey enhanced her skills to include oil and gas negotiations. Her experiences as the former Executive Director of a non-profit for eleven years, providing homeownership opportunities to Section 8 recipients, as a paralegal, banker, and a notary along with hard work, are also reasons for her success. Professionally, she is a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants (The Paralegal Association) and the Professional Civil Law Notaries Association. Casey’s business has grown over the years to expand throughout the state of Louisiana by word of mouth, which is known to be the greatest advertisement one can receive. Casey says that satisfaction is a priority when it comes to her clients and knowing that she has achieved what she sets out to do. “To make life better for someone else, to provide a greater level of comfort, and to lend support and resources give me immeasurable pleasure,” says Casey. She is a woman of great faith and whatever she has encountered during her twenty years of dedicated work, her experience and strength have sustained her. Casey is the mother of two: Jermaine T. Casey and Ree Jernelle Casey-Jones, and she is the doting grandmother of one darling grandson, Dawson Casey Jones.

RHALANDA R. JACKSON How long have you been in business and do you have any special training in what you are doing? I have been a Realtor for 5 years. Each of my previous jobs have contributed to the skills needed to be a successful realtor. Having worked in sales for over 20 years, I have learned how to navigate tough conversations, overcome obstacles and objections, and most importantly, listen for understanding. Additionally, holding a real estate license requires continuing education and training yearly. What woman inspires you and why? Several women inspire me and have played instrumental roles in my life over the years. My grandmother inspired me to know and love the Lord and to love and forgive people. My small circle of women friends encourage me and pour so much into me personally and professionally. Finally, my pastor shows me the beauty of living in the full favor of God and she has played a key role in my spiritual development and educational pursuits.

The Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA®) Background Screening Credentialing Council (BSCC) announced today that Southern Research Company, Inc. has successfully demonstrated continued compliance with the Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program (BSAAP) and is recognized as BSCC-Accredited. Southern Research Company, Inc. is located at 2850 Centenary Blvd. in Shreveport Each year, U.S. employers, organizations and governmental agencies request millions of consumer reports to assist with critical business decisions involving background screening. Background screening reports, which are categorized as consumer reports, are currently regulated at both the federal and state level. Since its inception, PBSA has maintained that there is a strong need for a singular, cohesive industry standard and, therefore, created the BSAAP. Governed by a strict professional standard of specified requirements and measurements, the BSAAP is becoming a widely recognized seal of achievement that brings national recognition to background screening organizations (also referred to as Consumer Reporting Agencies). This recognition will stand as the industry “seal,” representing a background screening organization’s commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement. The BSCC oversees the application process and is the governing accreditation body that validates the background screening organizations seeking accreditation meet or exceed a measurable standard of competence. To become accredited, consumer reporting agencies must pass a rigorous onsite audit, conducted by an independent auditing

LSU SHREVEPORT ALUMNUS ADVOCATES FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM LSU Shreveport alumnus Scott E. Peyton will be one of twenty nonprofit leaders presenting at Elevate 2021, a conference hosted by the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) from February 24 to 26, 2021. Peyton has served Louisiana as a probation and parole officer and the Director of Right on Crime, and he graduated with a Master of Science in Nonprofit Administration (MSNPA) degree in December 2020 from LSUS. Working in state criminal justice has given Peyton a unique understanding of the challenges former offenders rejoining society face. Driven by his experience, Peyton enrolled in the LSU Shreveport Master of Science in Nonprofit Administration program as a pathway to help offenders and ensure the criminal justice system recognizes key values. “Providing second chances for justice-involved individuals helps keep our communities safer, and it creates a system that recognizes values of hope and redemption,” Peyton said. “I chose LSUS because of its academic excellence and the reputation of its MSNPA program,” Peyton said. “Being able to earn the CNP and Masters in Nonprofit Administration are both invaluable in my role as a state director and in my advocacy efforts.” Peyton’s participation in the NLA Elevate conference is a special part of the certification requirements and will solidify his place as one of 11,000 CNPs. The Elevate conference strives to connect social sector leaders with students to build cultural competency and critical thinking around nonprofit workforce trends, leadership, advocacy, and equity. student, has been accepted into the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Peer Education Leadership Project. She is among only 6 students chosen across the nation to participate for 2021. Garza is the first Certified Peer Educator on the LSUS campus, working in her role to promote mental health awareness to other students. The CPE training was designed by NASPA and includes 12 extensive training hours on peer leadership, motivating behavior change, listening skills, response and referral skills, how to take action and intervene, recognizing the role of diversity and inclusivity, programming and presentation skills, self-care, and group dynamics. “Being accepted into the Peer Education Leadership Project is very personal to me,” said Garza.” Being given the opportunity to reamplify the importance of mental health at LSUS and prioritize the needs of my peers who are struggling with their mental health as I have, is something I am passionate about and hope to accomplish.” Much of the research around successful mental health support has shown the importance of using trained peers in wellness programming, as students are the key curators of change and primary support systems for their peers. Garza’s participation in the NASPA Peer Education Leadership Project will allow her to receive professional support from this reputable organization to implement her ideas on the LSUS campus. “I am truly excited for Alyssa, our students, and our campus to be able to see her ideas come to fruition for everyone’s benefit,” stated Angie Pellerin, Director of Counseling Services at LSUS.” LSU SHREVEPORT INTRODUCES “CAREERS IN CANNABIS” COURSE FOR SPRING 2021 Louisiana State University in Shreveport will offer a “Careers in Cannabis” course beginning in the Spring of 2021. The legal cannabis industry is predicted to outpace all other industries in terms of job growth by 2030, and LSUS wants to be at the forefront regionally for education surrounding this new emerging market. “Our mission as an institution of higher education is to ensure we are preparing people in this region to be successful in their future careers,” said Dr. Julie Lessiter, Ed.D., Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives for Louisiana State University Shreveport. “We are offering this course to gauge the level of interest in the community, and to also provide a much-needed discussion and education around the topic of the legal cannabis industry.” The four-week course starts in February and will meet twice a week. A livestreaming option will be available for those who cannot attend in person, or who are uncomfortable being in the classroom setting in the current pandemic. Topics covered by local industry specialists will include growing hemp, basic plant biology, basic and clinical research on cannabinoids, jobs, laws and regulations, and the marketing of products made with cannabis. Eye Doctors Provide Lunch for First Responders Christopher Shelby, MD, Wyche Coleman III, MD, and Stephen Lewis, OD, of WK Eye Institute, are showing thanks to the city’s first responders with lunch provided to the Shreveport Police Department, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office and Shreveport Fire Department. More than 450 individual pizzas were delivered to employees at the Shreveport Police Department and Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Nearly 100 pizzas were delivered Friday, Jan. 29, to Sheriff’s Department substations and its detective offices. The doctors will provide pizza lunches to members of the Shreveport Fire Department later in February. “One of the most basic, instinctive actions anyone can do to show comfort, respect and sincere appreciation is to offer a warm meal,” said Dr. Coleman. “Doctors Shelby, Lewis and I admire and respect the work our first responders perform daily. We understand their community role and the important part they play.” Added Dr. Shelby: “I respect and applaud our first responders for all they do. Offering local officers and support staff a meal is small compared to what they sacrifice daily on our behalf. It is an honour and the least Doctors Coleman, Lewis and I can do.” Dr. Lewis agreed. “In these hard days, we are reminded ever more of just how important they are to our city. I believe it’s also in times like these, saying thank you is more important than ever. Providing a meal is a small way of showing our appreciation.” Willis-Knighton CAO Brian Crawford Reappointed to State Police Commission Brian A. Crawford, Willis-Knighton Health System executive senior vice president and chief administrative officer, has been reappointed by Gov. John Bel Edwards to the State Police Commission. Crawford represents the 4th Congressional District and was nominated by Centenary College. The State Police Commission is a seven-member body that

has exclusive jurisdiction and final authority over the administration of the state police service. The commission serves as an impartial review board that authorizes and resolves State Police rules in order to regulate state personnel activities, while also hearing appeals from hired, full-time law enforcement officers. “I’m honored and humbled to be reappointed by Gov. Edwards to serve the people of the 4th Congressional District as a member of the State Police Commission. I want to thank Dr. Christopher Holoman and Centenary College for their confidence and renomination to this important post in supporting our State Troopers in their critical public safety role.” UNITED WAY NWLA CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF SERVING NORTHWEST LOUISIANA This year United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA) is celebrating 100 years of serving the community. UWNWLA’s centennial celebration will include both new and signature events throughout the year, such as Early Ed Week, Read Across America Day, Day of Caring, a Fun Run & 5k, and will culminate with the centennial celebration on August 26. Due to safety concerns caused by COVID-19, the organization will adapt its events as needed to include in-person, virtual, or hybrid models. As part of the yearlong centennial celebration, UWNWLA will spotlight 100 stewards of service, highlighting individuals and organizations who actively give back to Northwest Louisiana. UWNWLA will begin accepting nominations for the stewards of service awards in February through United Way’s website. In addition to recognizing the 100 stewards of service, UWNWLA will also convene a panel of community leaders to select 10 stewards to be featured and awarded at the centennial celebration in August. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize outstanding leaders within our community that work to make Northwest Louisiana better,” said President & CEO, Bruce Willson. In 2019, UWNWLA yielded more than $80,000 in sponsorship revenue from their annual events. UWNWLA hopes to achieve similar success in 2021, as these events allow the organization to continue essential programs and services many depend on and help support positive outcomes for local nonprofits.

M

ine is your typical vision story. I was eight years old living in England, the only daughter in an Air Force family of six. Having three brothers is difficult enough – the constant teasing, bickering and trickery – but having to get the dreaded “glasses” took it to a new level. Back in the day, if you were told you needed glasses you might as well never show your face again. And don’t get me started on braces for your teeth. We were driving through the beautiful English countryside on our way to a village filled with antiques. Mom and Dad loved to go antiquing and dragging us along was their idea of the ideal family outing. I was having a great time counting all the sheep grazing in the field when it occurred to me that those sheep were standing awfully still. I commented on this and all three boys had themselves a great laugh. To this day, I am teased about the “frozen sheep” of England because those beasts were nothing more than bales of hay.

FEBRUARY 2021

| SBMAG.NET

BY SEVA MAY Mom took me to the eye doctor the following week and within a few days of counting sheep, I was wearing the most attractive pair (not) of baby blue, cat-eye glasses for little girls. Ugh! Since then, I’ve worn many styles of eyewear, struggled with contact lenses, and had Lasik surgery to correct my vision. The Lasik lasted until I hit my 50’s and suddenly, I’m back in glasses. Ironically, the cat-eye look was back in style. Then, my eyesight, even with glasses, seemed foggy and blurred. Like someone had left a thumbprint on my pupil. I scheduled an appointment with a young doctor that my husband and I have admired since he was a 15-year old flying his stunt plane in Coushatta. The first time we met Wyche T. Coleman, III, he had just landed his plane after giving us an airshow that any mother would have had nightmares about. He came strolling in to the barbeque party we were having with mutual friends like he had just popped a wheelie on a motorcycle instead of doing a loopdi-loop in a twin engine. Now, Dr. Wyche T. Coleman, III handles a LenSx femtosecond laser with as much finesse as he does his airplane.

He confirmed that I had the beginnings of cataracts but they weren’t bad enough yet to schedule surgery. I could still see well enough with my readers. Fast forward a couple of years of working on a computer, writing features and columns for SB Magazine and the beginnings of cataracts had gone full blown. Those cataracts were really disrupting my work and costing me a fortune in readers because I kept losing them. After a series of tests were set up at Dr. Coleman’s office, I was ready to pull the trigger. About a week before cataract surgery, I was given an A-scan or a noncontact optical biometry to measure the length of my eye. Seems weird since the eyeball is round, right? How do you measure the length of something that’s round? And the answer is: the distance from a point on one side of the eyeball to a point on the other side. The curvature of my cornea, using a technique called keratometry was also measured. Both measurements help determine the appropriate power of the artificial lens implant that would replace my smudged up, clouded lens.

Dr. Coleman had also recorded a very informative video that all his cataract patients watch prior to the procedure. Using visuals, he describes what to expect, how the procedure works (don’t worry, he uses language that we non-medical people will understand easily) and how to take care of your eye afterward. He also talks about any side effects that might occur rarely. He doesn’t do this to scare you but rather to prepare you for what might happen. By the end of the video, I was even more convinced that I could put my trust in Dr. Coleman’s capable hands. My right eye would go first. I arrived at the Willis Knighton Eye Surgery Center bright and early, too early if you asked my husband. He had to come along because I was unable to drive myself after the procedure. Upon entering the building, we were checked for fever. All clear there so we moved up to the waiting area to check in. While we waited, a nurse asked me questions regarding my medical history. I was offered a mild sedative to help my jittery nerves. I wasn’t nervous at all but I took it just in case I might get a little jumpy – you never know. I then followed the nurse, who was just lovely I might add, to a closet where she gave me a paper gown and a delightfully attractive hair cap in a fetching shade of blue. All gowned up, I was ushered into another room with a row of chairs that reminded me of those big massage recliners you see in the mall. There, I met another sweet nurse who, after being so welcoming, proceeded to stick a needle in my wrist area for an IV. Now, I’m like anyone else. I don’t particularly like IV’s but I understand the necessity. I have to say, this one was not bad at all. This nurse had it together. I hardly felt a thing – not that I’d stand in line for another one – but this lady sure was smooth in the IV department. A rather tall gentlemen approached my recliner. He too was all robed up with an industrial looking Covid mask on. This was the anesthesiologist who also had a litany of questions for me. By then, that wonderful little pill was kicking in and I started to doze a little just in time for my procedure.

tion through my IV. After thoroughly cleansing the area, a drape was place over my face. A gadget called a speculum was used to hold my eye wide open. Using the newest LenSx technology, a femtosecond laser made a precise incision making the lens accessible in order to perform a capsulotomy. This is a fancy word for removing the lens. The cloudy lens was broken up and removed from my eye by using the latest ultrasound technology called a Phacoemulsification Procedure. On to another room where Dr. Coleman inserted the new multifocal lens called the PanOptixs lens that would hopefully take me out of wearing glasses FOREVER! Less than a week later, my right eye was taken care of in the exact same way. Well except for one minor issue – which wasn’t the nurse’s fault. Getting the IV proved more difficult this go around because my vein blew. She used the opposite wrist and all was well. And so are my eyes. The only problem I’ve had is driving at night. The

lights have a series of rings around them that made seeing Christmas decorations a prismatic, psychedelic experience. I’m in hopes that this phenomenon will eventually go away. Or maybe not! A follow up eye exam resulted in an additional procedure called the Ytrium Aluminium Garnet (YAG) Laser Posterior Capsulotomy in the right eye. This was to remove what is called a secondary cataract. It’s really nothing more than a cloudy film behind the intraocular lens. This was followed a week later by the left eye. All this occurred in Dr. Coleman’s offices. A few drops of numbing eye drops, a dozen or so zaps and – TaDa! – perfect vision. I can’t thank Dr. Coleman and his staff of incredibly kind technicians and nurses enough. Now, I can enjoy the second half of my life able to see the expressions on my grand children’s faces, the notes on sheet music, and the beauty of the sunsets from our back deck.

WE CARRY EACH OTHER It’s how we do things in Louisiana during times of challenge. We’re stronger together and we know our strength lies in the helping hands of our neighbors. So let’s wear a mask and protect one another. And protect the life we love. 01MK7496 12/20

Services offered at Rabalais Dental Centre include cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, root canals, implant restorations, and tooth whitening. “The first thing people notice about someone is their smile,” Rabalais said. “It gives people confidence in themselves, and the ability to help someone regain that wonderful smile is one of the most rewarding things I do.” Recognizing that dental work can be expensive, Rabalais offers an in-house dental membership plan, which is a fantastic alternative for those who don’t have dental insurance

Shelly Rabalais has always felt a deep passion of caring for people. A career in the healthcare industry resonated with her and dentistry has proven to be the perfect fit. “We work with both patients and other dental providers such as orthodontists and oral surgeons to ensure com-

Making people comfortable when they come for an appointment has always been a priority at Rabalais Dental, but over the last year “comfort” took on a new meaning. Covid-19 brought challenges to everyone, and the dental community was no different. Immediately Dr. Rabalais set her team to task “As always our first priority was the safety of our patients and staff. Next we reviewed the Louisiana Department of Public Health directions for healthcare providers and developed a plan that we felt combined both in the most effective way”, Rabalais said. In addition to health surveys and temperature checks upon arrival, adjustments to scheduling and patient interaction protocols took effect immediately to ensure that patients were not at risk due to casual contact. Next, UV air purifiers and patient room doors were added to reduce airborne risks. “Patients are already apprehensive about a dental visit. With the added stress of Covid-19 we want

to ensure that they know we have taken every precaution on their behalf. It is vitally important for our patients to know they are in a welcoming and safe environment from the moment they walk through the door,” Dr. Rabalais said. Rabalais believes her faith is one of the things that has made her successful. “God continues to bless me every day with fantastic patients and a fantastic team,” she said. Her calm yet determined and motivated demeanor has also helped. “I love being able to comfort people when they’re fearful,” Rabalais said. “I love a challenge, and what better challenge is there than identifying what pains someone and bringing them back to good health? I ask daily for God’s direction in my life, my family and my ability to help those who have entrusted me with their care” The remodel of Rabalais Dental Centre was slowed due to impacts from Covid-19, but now she is back at it full force. “I am extremely excited for everyone to see everything that’s been done. Major changes have been incorporat-

ed to streamline and improve our sterilization process as well as chairside improvements. Obviously it is not all about the look. She is confident, when work is done, it will be able to process patients more efficiently and ensure greater patient comfort “We are redoing everything, both inside and out, including our new logo.” Although there is still work to be done you can get a sneak peek here in these photos. 2164 AIRLINE DR, BOSSIER CITY, LA 71111 PHONE: (318) 747-3270 RABALAISDENTALCENTER.COM PICTURES COURTESY OF MANDY DUCOTE AT GALERIE D PHOTOGRAPHY SBMAG.NET

et’s see a great big smile because February is National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM), and it’s an excellent opportunity to promote the benefits of good oral health to your child. Getting children off to an early start of good dental health habits is essential for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. On February 8, 1949, the American Dental Association held its first national observance of Children's Dental Health. In 1955, this single-day national observance became a weeklong event, and in 1981 it was extended to a month-long event known as the National Children's Dental Health Month. Its message reaches millions of parents and children all across America. For 2021, the American Dental Associate has chosen the campaign slogan "Water, Nature's Drink!" SBMAG.NET

Tooth decay is the most chronic disease affecting our children in the United States. It’s a fast-growing issue and posing serious health risks to our children. The health of a child is closely correlated to their oral health. By scheduling regular dental visits and helping your child develop good oral health habits, you can help ensure that your child keeps that big beautiful smile of theirs while staying healthy. Furthermore, poor oral health has also been associated with decreased performance in school. Children with chronic dental issues are often unable to focus and have problems completing their school work. A child with a toothache is unlikely to score well on a test because of the distraction caused by pain. Untreated tooth decay can lead to eating problems, as well as problems with speaking and learning. Moreover, children with tooth or gum pain may experience decreased social well-being while at school. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the following for good oral hygiene: ̢ Using an ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste, brush your teeth at least twice a day. ̢ Floss daily. Bacteria that cause decay remain between teeth where a toothbrush can't reach. Flossing removes plaque and food from between the teeth and along the gum line. ̢ Limit between-meal snacks and eat a healthy, wellbalanced diet.

̢ Make regular visits to your dentist for professional cleanings and oral exams. ̢ Before their first birthday, have your child visit a dentist and begin regular dental check-ups. Routine dental exams and good preventive oral care can provide your child with a lifelong smile and help them stay overall healthy while positively affecting social relationships and performance in school. Visit the 2021 NCDHM campaign website (www.ada.org/en/public-programs/national-childrens-dental-health-month) to download posters and activity sheets for kids (like coloring sheets, mazes, and crosswords).

REAL ESTATE APPRAISAL

L

ast month we gave you an overview of what a real estate appraiser looks for as he or she evaluates your home’s exterior and the lot it sits on. Is the land graded properly? How is the drainage? Where is your home located and what is the neighborhood like? These are all important questions when you are trying to sell your home. Next, the appraiser will step inside your home. What is the agenda at this point? You can breathe a sigh of relief because they are not there to consider the cosmetic appeal of the house: your choice of paint colors, the pattern of your wallpaper, drapes, blinds etc. Decorative choices that you’ve made can always be changed by the buyer (unless you have exceptional taste). The appraiser will be looking for craftmanship and the quality of the materials used in your home’s construction. Your floorplan is also part of the calculated value. A layout that is unusual with atypical room placements will be taken into consideration.

78

FEBRUARY 2021

| SBMAG.NET

Depending on the type of heating system you have will make a difference in value. Does your home come with forced air heating or is it a hot water baseboard heating system and radiators? Do you have state of the art heating that includes radiant floor heat?

Take a look at your fixtures. How old are they? Do your electrically outlets work properly and are they up to date and up to building code? Are your floors in good shape? The appraiser will also look in the attic to check out the insulation or whether it has been finished out and includes heating and air conditioning. Other elements of the interior appraisal will include: • •

• • • •

The size and shape of rooms If remodeling or renovations have taken place, the quality of the work and materials, the adherence to code and permitting, and the impact on the functional layout of the home will all be considered. Utility room condition and will it support a washer and dryer The age, quality and condition of the kitchen appliances. Energy efficiency measures such as solar power. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well as any flood alert or similar system that has been installed by the current owner.

The appraiser will compile the information he has gathered regarding your property along with an onsite survey.

Thank you to our state and federal officials for prioritizing our residents and healthcare heroes to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

We look forward to a happy and healthy 2021! Together, we will beat COVID-19.

They will then take into consideration the current market conditions and whether property values in the neighborhood are increasing, decreasing or remaining stable. They evaluate the current levels of supply and demand and housing inventory. The appraiser will also estimate how long the property may be on the market, determine the number of similar properties are on the market in the area and how many comparable sales there have been in the last 12 months The appraiser will compile their final report that will give their considered and informed professional opinion as to the appraised value of the home.

HOME MATTERS | by hailey lawson

MORE WINTER IS COMING, SO YOU BETTER BE READY!

P

reparing your house for winter weather may not be your top priority, but definitely don’t procrastinate any longer because more winter is coming — Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, has declared there would be six more weeks of winter! Some of us will experience temporary bursts of very cold temperatures, but others living in more northerly areas will experience prolonged periods of severe cold. Wintery weather accompanied by ice and snow conditions can cause major property damage. Before the weather turns frightful outside, it’s a smart idea to take precautions and reduce our risks. This winter preparation checklist will prove helpful in preparing your home for the winter elements. PIPES Water expands when it freezes. If the water freezes inside your pipes, the pipes can burst and cause significant

home damage. To prevent freezing pipes, drain and shut off sprinkler systems and faucets and make sure all outdoor hoses are disconnected and all outdoor faucets are covered with insulators (many types are available at hardware stores). In unheated interiors, such as garages, attics, and basements, wrap pipes with insulation. Also, be sure to locate your main water shut-off in case of a water pipe emergency. WINDOWS AND DOORS Check around windows and doors for drafts. Drafts around windows and doors make it very difficult to keep your house warm. Use caulk and weather stripping to seal these areas. This easy and inexpensive fix can help you save a significant amount of money on your heating bill. Additionally, upgrading to double pane windows and insulated doors can greatly increase your home’s energy efficiency.

GUTTERS, ROOF, AND DRAINS Water back-up on the roof can lead to expensive home damage. Be sure your gutters are free of all leaves and debris. Before you get stuck with an annoying leak, check for missing or damaged shingles and replace them. Check flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vent pipes. Seal gaps with roofing cement and a caulking gun where water could penetrate. Always check to ensure that vents and chimneys are covered to prevent outside guests like rodents, birds, and insects from getting inside to nest in a warm place.

BAYOU STATE ROOFING is a locally owned and operated company that specializes in Residential and Commercial Roofing. For 8 years, they have served the Shreveport Bossier area, and most recently helped those in need of roofs and repairs in Lake Charles after Hurricane Laura. Bayou State is licensed and insured to specifically work on roofs, while many roofing companies and contractors do not have roofing on their liability insurance. Out of state roofers, builders, and contractors are not bound by the warranties of Louisiana. They are also not here to personally answer questions and help with your specific needs. HEATING SYSTEM It’s important to have your heating system serviced annually by a professional to prolong the life of the system and save energy. Always change your furnace filter at the beginning of the winter and then every two to three months thereafter. Dirty filters can cause your system to operate inefficiently. A room temperature lower than 65 degrees might not prevent the pipes that run inside walls from freezing, so be sure to keep your home heated to at least 65 degrees.

FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY A flickering, warm fire on a chilly winter evening can be very stimulating. However, before burning that first log, we want to make sure that our fireplace and chimney are clean and free of any little critters. A professional chimney sweep should inspect your fireplace and chimney to clean out soot and debris that could catch fire. Additionally, always remember to keep the flue closed when you’re not using the fireplace. Follow these easy steps to keep your home safe and warm during the winter months. Prepare early so you can enjoy that hot chocolate and a good book while snuggled up by the fire. SBMAG.NET

to have acquired the art from her example. I have fond memories of walking into my home after school while growing up. The smell of homemade cookies, or lemon scented Pinesol welcomed me right away. There was often a little bouquet of flowers in a milkglass vase next to my bed. And in warmer months, my freshly washed curtains would flap in the wind of the open window. It made me feel like home was the best place to be. There was evidence of mom’s magic touch in each little detail. Nothing fancy, just thoughtful. The quote from Elsie De Wolfe reminds me of my mom. “I am going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life.” Hopefully, I do the same for my family… especially during the winter season, when we spend so much time indoors. Allow me share some ways you can make home magical, too.

Oh

February! Here in the south, this month is sure to bring some of our colder, gloomier days. The hope of Spring is in the air… however, not a bloom yet to be seen. Instead of dread, is it possible to thrive during the long winter days? I like to think so! By simply making everyday moments magical, home becomes the best place to be. My mom was quite the home maker…and I am certain

Possibly a long, lost ritual, setting a table is one way to create a magical moment. Start with tidying the space. Clear the tabletop, wipe down the surface, and sweep underneath. A blank slate is sometimes all the inspiration needed to feel creative. Begin layering. Vintage grain sacks or linen tablecloths are a beautiful foundation to build upon. Next, arrange a centerpiece. Think out of the box. Use items that are not specifically made to be a centerpiece. This adds an element of surprise as well as a focal point. A long wooden crate or tall gold lanterns can hold fresh or faux flower stems. Remember, small bouquets are inexpensive and can be added to your cart on your next stop by the grocery store. Then set the place settings. Instead of traditional, make your table unique. Place the napkin on the back of the chair, under the drinking glass, or tucked in the bowl. Layer your dishes from larger to smaller, and even top them off with the dessert! Watch the magic happen as your family enjoys a family meal gathered at the table…and dessert is already waiting for them!

If perhaps it seems difficult to enjoy a meal together at the dining table, with busy evenings and activities to attend…make a buffet-style dinner setting for convenience. Focus on presentation to make it magical. Set out all that is needed for family members to help themselves. A stack of white dishes, silverware, and napkins can be corralled for easy access. Even casual meals with paper plates and napkins become special in a woven tray or on a French breadboard. Glasses with colorful straws and desserts on cake stands makes a welcome sight at

the end of a long workday. Placing items at different levels add interest and may encourage picky eaters to try something new. Use unexpected items such as vintage scales or a wooden candle riser to serve veggies or main dishes. Do not forget the flowers and ambiance. A string of twinkle lights down the middle of the kitchen island catches everyone’s attention. And there it is…a magical moment. With a little thought and creativity, February can become a month that warms the heart. Afterall, it is the month of LOVE. Spend it well, serve well, and love well. Those are the magical moments.

ture falls into the latter category. Located in the Silver Point development of southeast Shreveport, this stunning home is only minutes from town and surrounded by natural beauty. It has water, endless greenery, and elevation that steals the show. “That’s one of the reasons we chose this site,” says homeowner Valarie Knight. “My husband and I wanted to build something new, that was close to a body of water and, most importantly, highlighted its views. When we saw this site we knew it was right and immediately jumped on it.” Finished in June 2020, the home—a 4,388 square foot, 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom—was designed by architect Bennett Sabatier of Lafayette’s Sabatier Architecture firm and built by Shreveport’s Wesley Thomas Construction and Remodeling. Minimalist details, such as crown molding and trim work, seem to diminish from sight while glass partitions and oversize windows take center stage. Its spacious, free-flowing living-and kitchen area mixes seamlessly with the outdoor patio spaces. The Knight’s are big entertainers who not only love to host colleagues and friends—but love to host their children (and their children’s friends). So one of the most important features in their new home was to have an open floor plan that would make entertaining, and indoor-outdoor

living, easy. They also wanted the house to facilitate the transition into a new phase of their lives—becoming empty nesters. Specifically, empty nesters who entice their children to visit often.

Step inside to see why this home feels very approachable and welcoming.

To help Valarie in providing plenty of entertaining and gathering spaces for her family’s kids and friends, she enlisted the talents of interior designer Laurie Gautreau of Gautreau Interiors, who helped add her own design vision and modern flair to the residence.

The house is sited on a peninsula overlooking Long Lake. In helping make sure the site complimented the house, the Knight’s turned to a local landscape company to extend the usability of all the outdoor spaces—from the driveway entry to the backyard. “We knew we had to make these areas just as dynamic as the style of the home,” says Valarie, “so we designed a circular drive in front that effectively plays off the solid geometry of the house.”

“One of the best ways for all the rooms to work beautifully together was to create a palette of neutral colors and textured finishes that evenly flowed from room to room,” says Gautreau. And ‘falling into place’ it did! Together, with the expertise of the entire design team—Sabatier, Thomas and Gautreau —they all used their skills and a variety of unique design elements to add refinement and sleekness to its design. Inside and out–the home is full of modern conveniences and vintage touches. Summing up the results, Valarie could only praise her team on the final assessment of her new home. In looking back at the whole design process she recalls, “We created a relaxed flow between rooms, which further promotes an unhindered way of living. Allin-all, I think we accomplished what we set out to do.”

The Property, Entry & Exterior Surroundings

The result is a dramatic front area that is warm and welcoming.

Entryway and Grand Foyer

This exuberant entryway makes the case for a standout design element that visitors will enjoy before they even enter the home. From the outside, you have a state-like house, giving the feeling of sturdy opulence. The arched, custom glass doorway leads guests into the grand foyer. Once inside, the details set the tone—herringbone hardwoods, a gold chandelier, custom artwork and furnishings—all present a beautifully ornate entrance. After all, first impressions are important.

along with the 150 year old leather-tooled desk and chair (also belonging to Chuck’s grandfather), give the room a refined, sophisticated and personized touch.

Family Room

Exiting the grand foyer into the family room, you can view most of the first floor and straight out to the lake, thanks to the wide-open floor plan. The family room incorporates both the living and kitchen areas, exposing one to another, allowing natural light to flow through the first floor—giving the ability to accommodate larger groups, but also allowing it to feel more intimate when needed. The abundance of natural light allows a continuous view from the outdoors, whether you’re reading a book in the family room or socializing with friends in the kitchen.

Kitchen

The study is spacious and open with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. A brick fireplace surrounds builtin walnut cabinetry and shelving. The custom, pen-andink pieces of art—sketched by Chuck’s grandfather—

The kitchen shifts you into a relaxed mind-set with its cabinetry, herringbone-tiled backsplash and appliances. The

Impeccable wood panel finishes and striking architectural details give this handsome study a charm all its own. Floor-to-ceiling sliding walnut doors offer a major focal point as you enter from the entryway.

Nowhere is the unexpected more pronounced than in the smile-inducing kitchen. All the living areas connect to avoid cluttering the open floor plan with too many cabinets, almost everything is well organized and stowed away in drawers. This also makes it easy for guests of all ages to access kitchen essentials.

island doubles as a buffet, and its Quartzite countertop makes it the focal point of the room. The gold in the cabinetry doors, coupled with the gold-plated lighting above the island, has a vintage vibe. It is a natural gathering spot for guests. The elongated white subway tile, placed in a herringbone pattern, with vent hood easily compliment the cabinetry. All the elements combine seamlessly while connecting with the living areas and allows for uninterrupted views of the lake. Just steps away, there’s a wet bar—between the kitchen and dining room—which is yet another entertaining delight, with its built-in shelving and ice maker.

Master Bedroom and Bath

The master bedroom has the best view of the lake in the house. Here, the design elements are more refined, highlighting a more personal touch than the main rooms. Along with the lovely view, the quiet gray walls create a calming atmosphere for the busy hosts. The master bathroom, along with a large, his and hers walk-in closet, is spacious for both homeowners to occupy at once. There are dual vanities separated by floor-toceiling drawers and cabinetry. This is a more pleasing arrangement than running one long vanity along a wall with two sinks and gives each of the owners a defined area. The countertops are marble. The water closet has its own little room across from the tub.

Laundry Room

The laundry room has a tile floor, open locker cubbies for everyone and a side-by-side washer and dryer at the end of the room for easy access. Towels and wet or muddy clothes go right into the washer, which is surrounded by countertops on either side—easy for folding. There’s a workspace across from the cubies, and the builtins drawers and cabinets serve as a desk for household organization.

Fitness Room

Fitness is a vital part of the Knight’s daily lives. Having their own workout room offers them the ability to add their own personalized touch—to design their surroundings based on the workouts that inspire them the most. Geared with cardio machines and weights, the room features a floor-to-ceiling mirrored wall flanked by two floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlook the lake. The room was designed to be a focal point for both the views of the lake and their love of personal fitness.

Poolside Terrace and Patio

The design of the back of the house, which overlooks Long Lake, is all about indoor-outdoor living, with a 20’ sliding door system that let the Knight’s and their guests go from the patio to the open family room and kitchen. This side is west-facing, so it enjoys lots of sunlight, especially in the evenings. The terrace and patio area include an enclosed sitting and grilling area (with phantom screens), fire pit area and plenty of deck space to just sit and enjoy the views of the lake. The transition from indoor to outdoor is seamless, as the boundaries are simply non-existent!

itting in the sunny dining area of Counter Culture on Youree Drive, SB Magazine had the Opportunity to visit with Jan Middleton, owner of Counter Culture. We were curious to know how a young woman whose forte is marketing happened to acquire one of Shreveport-Bossier City’s iconic yogurt shop. It was more happenstance it seems than anything else. Jan had been working for an ad agency that handled the McDonald’s regional corporate account. On the verge

of going national, she knew she’d eventually be losing the account. In 1994, while sharing an evening of comradery with a couple of friends, she asked one of them if he thought his brother, Mitch Timmons, the owner of Counter Culture, would consider selling to her. The rest is history, as they say. Three days later, Jan was the proud owner of that little restaurant across from Centenary College on Kings Highway – home of the infamous Humphry Yogurt. She has since multiplied the locations, SBMAG.NET

Over the course of 27 years or so, Jan had a baby girl, Madeline, found an incredible manager, Melissa Harmon (who runs the ship), and has had a wonderfully fruitful experience growing her business. Jan believes that a big reason for her success is that she didn’t change a thing. The recipes are the same as the

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

In our society, those who live with disabilities are sometimes overlooked or mishandled. Millions of men, women, and children face each day with an unimaginable amount of strength and optimism all due to extenuating circumstances. Though they may have differences that set them apart from other citizens, it does not mean that they are not worthy of the same care and attention. It also does not mean that they are not capable of living and functioning as independent human beings. For over 100 years, Easter Seals has been dedicated to the health and wellness of people of all ages with disabilities and their families. They also tend to the needs of veterans, seniors, the mentally ill, and their families as well. Each year, Easter Seals provides much appreciated assistance to over a million people and are active advocates for the disabled and vulnerable. They were a top advocate for the passing of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act and continue to be voices for the voiceless. Their top-notch team of employees and volunteers mixed with cutting edge programming has changed the lives of people in communities across the country.

these assistance programs offer. EarlySteps provides disabled children 3 and under with every tool possible to help them learn how to maintain and embrace who they are while providing the necessary knowledge to raise a child with special needs. Easter Seals Louisiana also offers Transitional Housing for those who are suffering from mental illness or are battling substance abuse along with mental illness. These individuals are either homeless, always bouncing around because they have no real home, or who are being released from the hospital with nowhere to go. Easter Seals Louisiana provides them with a safe place where they can learn valuable life skills, tackle important issues about themselves, and focus on getting and keeping their minds on the right track before venturing out on their own. It is so much easier to learn how to be a better you when you do not have the stress of basic needs like shelter and food. They even offer employment services to give even more opportunity to those trying to turn it all around. Easter Seals Louisiana is more than just a non-profit organization, it is a godsend for the lives that are forever changed by the many doors they are able to help open. What might seem small to some is an answered prayer to another. Every day, their volunteers and trained employees give their all to those who might not have it to give to themselves. With continued support from loving donors, Easter Seals Louisiana will be able to be a helping hand for generations to come.

It was 1919 when Ohio businessman Edgar Allen was inspired to create the National Society for Crippled Children. Some years prior, Allen lost his son in an unfortunate streetcar accident. His son’s life might have been save had Allen been able to find sufficient medical care for his son in their hometown of Elyria. Allen sold his business and started a fundraising campaign to build a hospital in their town. The journey of building and running the hospital is what really opened his eyes to the needs of the disabled. He never realized how overlooked children with disabilities were until he started that journey. That observation is what gave him the stroke of genius to start the National Society of Crippled Children which would eventually change its name to Easter Seals. In 1934, the organization had an idea to draw awareness to their cause of helping the disabled. Donors and advocates could show support by placing decorative seals on their envelopes and letters. These seals helped envelopes stand out and were a definite icebreaker and conversation starter. The first seal design was developed by Cleveland cartoonist J.H. Donahey who based the design on a concept of simplicity. He believed that the single lily, a symbol of spring, was best because those individuals who are helped by the organization were simply asking to live a normal life. It was not until 1952 that the lily was adopted as the organization’s official logo. By 1967, the organization had already expanded by setting up branches in communities across the county and inspired grassroots efforts to help the disabled were at a high. Easter Seals Louisiana was established in 1951 to cater to the needs of those who so desperately needed it. With chapters from Shreveport to Thibodaux, Easter Seals Louisiana offers a variety of services geared towards providing the love, support, and education these brave people and their families need in order to be their absolute best. For example, their Support Coordination program helps find and enroll people for services like Medicare and Social Security as well as make sure that they are being afforded all the benefits that SBMAG.NET

It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference Margaret Hamilton that you have lived and lived well.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our history books are brimming with the names of women through the centuries who have inspired us. Exceptional women like Helen Keller. Courageous women such as Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai or Amelia Earhart. These are names we are all familiar with. Other memorable ladies who are less well-known Margaret Hamilton also deserve a place in our history. Women like Margaret Hamilton without whom the moon would not have been reached. She’s the gal that wrote the codes for all the Apollo missions. Go back further to WWII as Hedy Lamarr, the gorgeous Hollywood actress, along with composer George Antheil, developed a secret communication system that scrambled radio frequencies. This kept the Axis Powers from decoding Allied messages and prevented the tracking of torpedoes. (She never got a dime for that invention which was not used until the 60’s. Recognition of her efforts finally came in 1997.)

Have you ever heard of Vigdis Finnbogadottir? She was the 4th President of Iceland and is known for being the world’s first dem-

ocratically directly elected female president, and the longest serving female head of state. She helped paved the way for female leaders all over the world. Her motto is ‘Never let the women down’. Love this! How about Gertrude Ederle the first woman to swim the English Channel. Or Gwendolyn Brooks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for her book of poetry Annie Allen. These are all names that don’t readily roll off your tongue.

We can cite pages and pages of women who have made contributions to our society who may never become household names and probably wouldn’t expect to be so recognized. These are the women who are selfless in their missions. Who willingly made personal sacrifices to help other people. Women who volunteer their time and energy for worthwhile causes. Who give more than they take. We have these types of women living among us right here in Shreveport and Bossier City. They are nurses, teachers, health care workers and store clerks. They are our mothers, our mentors and our role models. Look around you and you’ll spot them. As we begin this new year, we are committed to building stronger relationships within our community by focusing on the power of kindness. We are launching a platform that allows you to share your stories about someone who has moved you by their actions. You will be able to nominate inspiring women who have touched your life or that you know has Malala Yousafzai worked tirelessly to help others. Women who are willing to lead without having a title attached to their name. Who will always lift people up and are ready to do the work that matters. In a paragraph or two, tell us about your nominee or nominees and why you feel they deserves more recognition for what they are doing. Each month we will highlight one woman and, at the end of the year, our readers can vote on the SB Magazine’s Inspiring Woman of the Year. Submit your nominees to editor@sbmag.net.
