Several factors can lead to a DWI arrest. If the officer believes you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both, then an arrest for DWI is justified. The way an officer makes this determination varies. If you are driving in a manner consistent with an intoxicated individual, the officer will pull you over standard field sobriety test, a breathalyzer test, or, in some cases, submit a request to collect blood samples. Refusal to consent will result in losing your driving privilege. Remember, chances are the officer is recording the entire exchange, and you should

Some gyms paint slogans like “No pain, no gain” on the walls. Some boast of being “judgement-free zones.” At Christ Fit Gym off of Chinaberry Lane in Bossier City, the message is a bit more complex:

“For bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” —

1 Timothy 4:8

That’s because Christ Fit is not just a gym. It’s the foundation of one family’s mission.

“I want to tell as many people about Jesus as I possibly can, and I want to make a difference in our community,” said owner Billy Weatherall. “That’s certainly what this gym has done. And it starts with me. It’s been a big difference in my life, in my

family’s life.”

Weatherall has long been into physical fitness. Folks used to come to his garage to work out, but he also admits to partying and drinking back then, too.

Then it all changed.

come people into his garage to work out. But that’s where the similarities stopped.

“We went from partying and drinking, then after I got saved, we started doing Bible devotions,” he said. “I was like, ‘Guys, this is going to be a little bit weird.’ They said, ‘Bill, this is weird, but you come here, and we like it. You let us work out for free.’ And people started coming.”

You.

“I got saved in 2006 after the military,” he said. “I came home from three deployments and was really broken. I gave my life to the Lord. I told the Lord the day of my salvation, ‘I am going to be completely committed to you. I don’t know what that looks like. I don’t know much about You. But if You just give me purpose, I’ll do whatever you want.’”

At that time, Weatherall continued to wel-

And people kept coming. In fact, Weatherall said so many people came that they outgrew the garage at his home. That’s when God came back to him about that commitment Weatherall made in 2006.

“Life was just so good,” he said. “We were doing well. (My wife) was a full-time nurse. I was back in the reserves as a drill ser-

geant, in oil and gas, back in school doing very good. Then, in 2011, God hit me up on that promise. He wanted me to leave everything and start a gym.”

Christ Fit Gym is open at 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. It offers a variety of free classes throughout the day. Each class begins with a devotion that lasts about 15 minutes. The gym also has an array of machines and free weights available for those who want to work out at their own pace.

“We just want people to come up here and get involved,” he said. “It’s my job to make sure this environment stays Christ-like. A lot of people who don’t go to church want to come here and work out. They sit through the devotions because they respect a free gym, and 100 percent of the time, they’re always asking me questions afterwards. It’s always a unique thing that they get genuine, authentic Christianity up here.”

And every bit of it is free. Christ Fit does not operate on membership dues. It is a donations-only operation.

“You can come here 1,000 times and never give a dime,” Weatherall said. “Pastors were saying, ‘Bill, this is not a good idea. You don’t have any funding.’ But when I went to sleep, God was driving me crazy. He was making my life miserable because He was telling me to go, and I was saying no.”

Weatherall said God made it impossible to do anything but commit to the vision.

“We’re gonna keep on doing this no matter what,” he said. “Until Jesus comes back or the money runs out, we’re going to fight tooth and nail to see that this place survives and continues to be a lighthouse in this community.”

Christ Fit Gym is a mission not just for Billy, but his entire family.

Billy’s wife, Julie Weatherall, was a labor and delivery nurse for 12 years before she left that job to join the business full time.

“I remember the day Billy called me about opening a gym, and how much we were going to charge,” she said. “Then I was at work one day, and he called me and was like, ‘This is going to sound crazy, but God has laid it on my heart that we need to do donations only.’ I just sat there for a second, thinking, ‘How’s that going to work? But OK, let’s roll with it.’

“We have ups and downs and all arounds, but all in all, it’s been a huge blessing. To see the growth from one room where you could fit 10 people to where we are at now, it’s really awesome.”

Julie started keeping the books for Christ Fit in her spare time while she continued working as a nurse. But as the business grew, Billy thought it would be a good idea to add a smoothie store to the gym five years ago.

“That sounds crazy,” she remembers saying. “I prayed about it and prayed about it, and I was like, ‘OK, I’ll just go part time. I’ll still keep my job, still keep my insurance. So I started kind of part time, and it was so much I ended up just quitting my nursing job.”

Billy’s sister, Jodi Johnston, recalls how she got involved in the early days.

“I remember when he told me, I said, ‘If the bank will give you a loan for $50,000 and you’ve been unemployed for a year, and she’s a full-time nurse, well, I guess it’s God’s plan.’” And the first bank he went to did give him that loan.

Johnston recalls one night in that first year when her brother called her, distressed by the fact that no one was donating to the gym and the rent was due. That’s when she threw out an idea.

“I’ve always been a huge garage sale person,” she said. “I told him, ‘Have a garage sale. People that know what you’re doing, and the kids that have come there, they love you. Nobody wants to see this fail.’”

That first garage sale brought in enough money to pay the month’s rent. Soon the garage sales became a weekly event. They kept growing, Johnston said, until they turned into the Christ Fit Thrift Store, behind the gym.

“The thrift store is one of our biggest blessings,” she said. “It has been able to provide so much.”

Billy’s brother, Bernie, has been there from the beginning, helping put in the floors and set up the equipment. But the gym wasn’t making money in those earlier days, so Bernie worked in oil and gas for seven years — “a horrible lifestyle,” he said.

“I came back home, got my life right with the Lord, and started working here full time,” Bernie said. “This gym saved my life, 100 percent.”

Bernie works with the moving and recycling arms of the operation. Those operations, along with the thrift store, help keep the gym operating on a donation basis.

Even Billy’s mother, Janet Weatherall, plays a role in the operations.

“Ever since the gym was opened, Billy has always given me a place here at the gym” she said. “Billy has been so obedient. I look at his life, and God has just blessed him.”

Christ Fit’s growing portfolio of businesses and services provides more than just a place to work out. To many, it provides an opportunity.

“Christ Fit Gym is not just a gym,” Johnston said. “We have all the special needs students work here during the day. This whole facility offers second-chance employment. We strongly believe in that. We think, if somebody doesn’t give them a chance, why won’t they go back to their old ways? It’s our job to plant the seed. If you come here, it’s gonna get planted. And if you come here enough, it’s gonna get watered, too. That’s the goal of it.”

“It doesn’t matter your past,” Billy said. “We are willing to give anyone a chance. We all have pretty bad backgrounds. We’ve made some mistakes. We’ve lived life. I’ve lived life to the fullest for the world, and I’ve lived life to the fullest for the Lord. It’s not even comparable.”

While each family member has a specialty in the operation, they all pitch in anywhere they are needed. Billy and Julie both have helped on moving jobs, and Janet has been known to help with the packing.

“If we’re all not in it, I don’t want to do it,” Julie said. “This is such a beautiful thing we have here with our family.”

As the operations continue to grow, the family remains committed to God, to each other and to every person who walks through their doors.

To Julie, it’s about being the church to people who might not go to a church building.

“I love that this place is open for everyone,” she said. “A lot of people aren’t going to go to a church building. But they feel very welcome here. It’s a come as you are kind of thing because none of us is perfect.”

For Bernie, the excitement is in seeing how God always shows up.

“I see God’s favor daily,” he said. “I see miracles weekly. It’s unbelievable. God’s favor is all over this. Truly blessed.”

And for Janet, it’s simply a labor of love.

“This gym is absolutely unconditional love,” she said. “People come as they are, and it’s always just been a warm, welcoming place. I’m just so proud of my children. I learn from them every day. They are my inspiration.”

For Billy, it all goes back to Christ Fit’s mission statement, found in 1 Timothy 4:18.

“Physical training is important, but it’s not the most important,” he said. “It’s knowing the Lord. When you know the Lord, it has eternal ramifications. It’s for here, and it’s for the future.”

best lessons from my mother The I Learned

Life doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a mother. Which begs the question— where would we be without our mothers? They lift us up and keep us grounded. They stand by our side, cheer us on, and push us to reach our full potential. But above everything else—their love for us is unconditional. Here are a few things I learned from my mother that actually stuck.

WATCH YOUR MANNERS.

Say please, write thank-you notes, and be polite. People notice and like being around you when you do these things, which is really important.

TRAVEL AND EXPLORE.

Put yourself out there and try new things. Everyone in the world doesn’t do things the same way you do. Take a salsa class, go rock climbing, run a marathon or learn to speak a new language (or two)—and do it for yourself. Open your mind and see a situation from

another’s perspective. When she dropped me off at college, she only said three things between the tears—study hard, laugh a lot and keep your honor.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

You have to learn the basics before things get interesting, so learn as much as you can as fast as you can because when you become the best at something, that’s when the real fun begins. There’s no substitution for paying your dues.

RESPECT YOUR ELDERS.

26 MAY 2023 | SBMAG.NET APRIL 2023 | SBMAG.NET

You may not like those who came before you but you must show respect to their position. You can learn something from everyone (both positive and negative), so listen to their stories and learn from their experience.

HONOR WHO YOU ARE AND TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST.

Believe in yourself unapologetically. All work and no play is not a sustainable long-term strategy, so always make sure you leave time for some fun in your life, too. Take vacations, save room for dessert—life is short, so enjoy something in every day. Keep your tank full so you can be present with the important people in your life. Which brings me to:

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LET INTO YOUR INNER CIRCLE.

People show you who they are. Be clear on what attributes you value in others and keep firm boundaries with your closest friends. Do not divulge too much to those you do not hold in your inner circle and keep it positive—nurture those relationships. Recognize those that don’t hold your values. If someone shares gossip with you, consider that they could they be gossiping about you, too.

BE FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT.

Understand your finances and use your brain to figure out

how to make a living while also making a difference. Don’t spend money you don’t have. Get in the habit of saving a little bit from every paycheck.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF.

Go ahead, say it—you’ll feel so much better. No, of course you’re not going to elope, but your wedding plans wouldn’t be complete without suggesting it at least once.

YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.

Mom always told me that I could handle anything life threw at me. My mom encouraged me but didn’t fix my problems. She had faith in me that I could handle anything from friend drama to professional choices and education decisions. So far so good.

AND…ALWAYS HAVE CLEAN NAILS. And clean behind your ears. Cleanliness is next to Godliness and so on. As Muhammed Ali said, “if you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you play good and when you play good, they pay good.”

IN SHREVEPORT ON DISPLAY IN MAY

The exhibit Andrés Sánchez Flores: Gems of an Artistic Genius, an outstanding memorial exhibit of historic murals, Caddo and Aztec drawings, watercolors and Mexican genre paintings, will be on display from May 4-26, 2023, in the West Wing Gallery of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum.

Andrés Sánchez Flores, (1905–1977) was born in San Andrés, Jalisco in western Mexico. He was a master artist who worked in the mediums that defined the Mexican Art Movement, the Renaissance of mural painting, and taught classes on these techniques in Mexico, United States, and Australia.

He worked as a chemist, technician in artistic mediums, and collaborator to the great Mexican artists of the last century—including Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Jose Orozco among others. His work was a major component in the painting and restoring of a large body of murals and frescoes created between 1920 and 1953.

The family of Andrés Sánchez Flores moved to Shreveport in 1955. Sánchez Flores also had great strength as an artist,

painting some 34 known art works that include sketches, drawings, paintings, five murals, and one fresco. Several of the works reflect insights gained from studies of Pre-Columbian culture that enabled him to express accurately the aspects of the culture both artistically and scientifically. From his research, he depicted their life - how they treated one another, strangers and how they interacted with nature.

In the 1950’s, he completed his first original work in the U.S., the 16-foot oil painting shown at Jackson Hall at Centenary College, and the pre-historic mural Oil Trade in Louisiana Before the White Man. He and Shreveport artist Amos Lee Armstrong, first Art Director of LSEM (Louisiana State Exhibit Museum) together

painted the historic mural 412 Years of Bossier History commissioned by the National Bank of Bossier.

An Opening Reception open to the public will be held on Thursday, May 4 from 4:30–7:00 pm. with light refreshments provided by Gabriel Banderas, owner of Zuzul Coastal Cuisine, with Friends of the Museum. Music and dance will be performed in traditional costume by the Folkloriko Group Orgullo de Mexico. Lupita Soto Torres, coordinator for adult education students, Bossier Parish Community College Coordinator, will lead the dance troupe. The artist’s family encourage visitors to wear attire to celebrate a great artist and the Cinco de Mayo spirit!

WEEKLONG EVENT AND EXHIBIT CELEBRATES ARRAY OF STUDENT ART FORMS

The Shreveport Convention Center was filled with 95,000 square feet of visual, literary, performing, culinary, fashion, lighting design, and film art for ARTBREAK 2023 – now in its 37th year! ARTBREAK showcases the arts programs and artistic achievements of students in Caddo Parish and other regional schools with a free weeklong celebration and weekend festival.

More than 50,000 students, parents, teachers, and weekend festival goers celebrated the achievements of Caddo Parish Students during the largest student arts festival in the south. Award-winning student creations collected more than $20,000 in savings bonds and cash prizes, and two students from each school were offered a deep dive into several arts disciplines through master classes taught by expert artists.

ARTBREAK welcomed 2nd and 3rd graders to enjoy more than 50 hands-on, make-and-take S.T.E.A.M. learning activities under the guidance of professional artists.

There were school and community performances. Nationally renowned children’s entertainer based in Washington, DC, Uncle Devin, known as “The Children’s Drumcussionist,” also performed and KTAL-6 ARTBREAK’s Got Talent Show returned. The Los Angeles Dance sensation, Straight Up Abilities, was there showcasing the talents of children and adults with intellectual or physical disabilities.

ARTBREAK 37 had several new additions:

• The Shreve Memorial Library performed a “Pete the Cat: Rockin’ in My School Shoes” play and hosted a Book Walk in the style of a cake walk.

• Professional artist James Marks invited attendees to help him sculpt a life-size metal figure named Oscar Joseph, with colorful wire and pipe cleaners that will be showcased at SRAC’s ArtStation.

• The Louisiana Division of the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation presented Poetry Out Loud, a dynamic recitation competition for high school students.

• New Community Partners including the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Louisiana Engineering Society (LES), the Noel Community Art Center, the Red River Revel Arts Festival, the Renzi Center, Robinson Film Center, Sanctuary Glass Studio, and SciPort Discovery Center invited ARTBREAK attendees to create art with them.

ARTBREAK is produced by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and Caddo Parish Public Schools and made possible by the generosity of grantors and community and business sponsors.

beloved readers! Greetings, Y

our SB Fashionista, Casey Craig, here!

It’s the last month of spring, and with longer days and undeniably warmer temperatures, summer 2023 fashion trends are upon us! Hallelujah! It's the perfect time to cue all the biggest styles, colors, and must-have pieces that will rule the season. Stay ahead of the biggest fashion trends with SB to flaunt your unique style while shopping with the ladies or going out for an evening on the town with your honey. You’ll know how to spot the latest must-have items on the high street, snatching up these coveted pieces before they inevitably sell out.

per

FASHION

As your resident Fashionista, I've scoured the runways, fashion mags, and the internet to bring you a curated selection of the only trends you need to know this season to dress ahead of the crowds. Balmy eves are just around the corner. From colors and fabrics to accessories and styling, you'll want to snatch up these items for transitioning your stellar spring wardrobe into summer!

• Pastels have hit the fashion scene in a big way and are perfect for transitioning from spring to summer. Instead of reaching for the typical soft pink of seasons past, try a bold lavender, baby blue, or a sunny pale yellow this season. Shades of purple are especially making a huge splash on runways across the world!

• Low-rise pants and shorts are making a comeback this season for a sultry nod back to the days of The Simple Life. These midriff baring bottoms are all the rage for summer 2023. Show some hip!

• Cat-eye Sunglasses add a sharp, stylish accent to an outfit with whimsical class and sophistication. Embody your inner Audrey Hepburn with some sassy summer sunnies!

• Metallics make you shine and stand out amongst the crowd. Try a slinky skirt or blousy unbuttoned top for a bit of futuristic flare.

• Sheer fabrics add a sensual touch to any outfit. You can wear it under or over other items for an effortless layered look. Sheers of every color have been spotted on numerous fashion week runways this season. Be bold and dazzle in sheer!

• Bralettes continue to prove to be ultra-trendy wardrobe pieces you can use to spice up any outfit, instantly taking it from daytime office to evening martinis. Wear with a longer skirt or pants and ditch your jacket altogether for an edgier look. Wear your confidence out..it looks good on you!

• Oversized blazers have made waves in the fashion world recently and are gaining momentum as the season’s musthave outerwear statement piece, so stock up because this trend isn’t going anywhere any time soon! Bigger is better, so size up and go for the “I borrowed this from my boyfriend” look. Wear over a matching skirt or shorts for a tailored set feel - the fav look of the

season. Or wear over mismatched bottoms for a more casual feel.

• Big bags and totes are the chic, functional preference for summer 2023, with tiny handbags nowhere in sight.

• Cutouts Dare to bare! This fashion trend has been spotted on runways across the world and is gaining momentum. Cutouts add a fierce, modern edge to your fun fit. It’s a modern summer expose!

• Tank Tops may seem like a given during the summer, but a modern spin on the plain white tank top has hit the fashion runways by storm this season. Pair this wardrobe staple with breezy, wide leg trousers and chunky loafers for a perfect springto-summer look. Toss on your oversized blazer and cat-eye sunnies with a sleek low ponytail to complete the look!

Pre-planning is the greatest act of love that you can do for your spouse and children. It allows your family the opportunity to grieve on the worst day of their life when there has been a death in the family instead of having to be at the cemetery looking for a suitable burial type and site. It benefits both you and your loved ones since you get to choose what you want. You will work with a Professional Cemeterian who will discuss your many options and show you the different above-ground Entombment and inground interments. Pre-plan purchase options are available at affordable and reasonable prices that you will be comfortable with, and the price is locked in. This loving act from you should remove the stress from your loved ones who may otherwise be rushed into choosing a cemetery, type of final disposition, and a burial site shortly after the passing, where it is too easy for them to emotionally overspend and not know your wishes. There are several choices at Rose-Neath Cemetery, and many more are coming in the near future. We currently offer inground interments in our beautiful, manicured gardens. People have the option of above-ground Entombment in a Private Walk-in Mausoleum of one’s choice or a Private Estate (above ground crypt). Offered to families (or individuals) are breathtaking shrubbery-lined Family Estates that can be used for

above-ground or inground final dispositions. Rose-Neath Cemetery also has a beautiful Veterans Garden for Veterans and their spouse. For those wishing to be cremated, various Cremation options are available to choose from. In addition to a loved one’s final resting place, Memorialization is also offered by Rose-Neath Cemetery.

At Rose-Neath and Round Grove Cemeteries, we treat people like family. We listen to them, their concerns, needs, desires, and dreams and deliver without high-pressure tactics and at their pace. Our cemeteries take pride in being the most beautiful park-like cemeteries in the ARK-LA-TEX. Rose-Neath Cemetery was once a pecan orchard, keeping many features today from back then. Well-maintained gardens with extra attention given to detail give our families a place to visit with pride and a feeling of peace and tranquility. For what Rose-Neath and Round Grove Cemeteries offer, it is said that they are also the most reasonable-priced cemetery in the ARK-LA-TEX.

These are new and different times that we live in. The Cemetery Staff is compassionate and understanding when it comes to people saying goodbye to their loved ones. We encourage the use of wearing masks, social distancing, and hand sanitizing. We have adapted to the new age by offering Zoom Services for those who choose to participate from an offsite location.

Since 1932, Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Homes, Crematorium, and Cemeteries, Inc. have been serving northwest Louisiana families during the most difficult of times. This family-owned company is dedicated to providing the compassionate care families need when a loved one dies.

Funerals bring family and friends together for comfort and support. They reaffirm relationships, celebrate achievements, and give all an opportunity to appreciate the gift of life. Let us be of service to you by contacting any of our twelve locations. Call today for a free, no-obligation consultation to see how a pre-arranged funeral plan through Rose-Neath and Kilpatrick Life Insurance Company can provide peace of mind for your family.

Pre-planning benefits both you and your loved ones. You get to work with a funeral director to plan the funeral that you want without the pressure of time. The funeral that you want at a price that you are comfortable with and the price is locked in. This is much less stressful than your loved ones trying to put together a whole funeral in a few hours, where it is too easy for those in grief to emotionally overspend, and you get your wishes followed.

Once you have planned out your funeral, you will know the costs and can begin to prepare. This may involve creating a savings account or a pre-need policy. The traditional method of financing a funeral is a life insurance policy designed to pay for the service and other expenses. A Kilpatrick Life agent will be happy to create a policy tailored to meet your needs. By pre-planning your service and how to pay for it, it saves your family money by freeing them from the need to pay for the service with a high-interest rate credit card or having to come up with cash with no notice.

We are privileged to serve families generation after generation. When we help a family get through such a difficult time, we don’t intend for the relationship to end there. At Rose-Neath, we aren’t just here to earn your business but also to earn your trust.

Started in 1983 by the late Ralph D. Balentine, the Balentine Slogan “Caring, it’s a family tradition” is enforced through having multiple generations of family involved daily in the business. Mr. Balentine’s daughter Pam McBeath has taken the reins as president and CEO, along with her husband Carl McBeath and their son Casey, handling the day-to-day operations ensuring first class quality of care to every patient a Balentine ambulance transports. Providing quality transportation services across town, across the state, or across the region, Balentine’s trained staff of nationally registered and state licensed EMTs and Paramedics can provide basic life support care all the way to replicating ICU care with Paramedics providing Advanced Life Support with on board ventilators and cardiac monitors. Balentine Ambulance Service generously gives back to the community by providing services to some of the most high-profile events in the SBC. If you have been to the Independence Bowl, Barksdale Air Show, or any of the major Mardi Gras parades, you didn’t have to look very far to see one of the iconic white

and blue ambulances parked nearby keeping revelers and fans safe.

National EMS week is May 21-27, 2023. Balentine Ambulance urges you to thank these special individuals who day in and day out care for the sick and injured as if they were their own family members.

The dream began in 1984 when Don O’Byrne was in Los Angeles working in restaurants to support his momentary dream to be an actor. Little did he know, it was his work in restaurants that later fulfilled his dream of becoming a successful restaurateur. Upon returning to Louisiana and graduating college, Don held a couple of executive sales positions at Fortune 100 companies before being laid off for the final time. It was then that Don knew it was time to pursue a business that he could own and relied on what he knew best- restaurants. Don had learned his trade in everything from fine dining to Mexican restaurants in Dallas, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

In 2003, Don wrote a business plan that ranked in the top 10 in the Ford Motor Company and Diversity Inc. Magazine’s “Henry T. Ford Entrepreneur of the Year” business plan contest. Unfortunately, even with a great business plan, he was turned down by 12 banks and four private investors before finally getting a business loan from a local bank that had previously declined to invest with him. In 2006, the dream became a reality with the first Don Juanz in Bossier City. Don, his wife Amy, and their son Bailey went on to create their second location in Shreveport in

2016. They obtained a federal trademark for the brand, developed a line of certified nutritional Cali-Mex menu items, and have garnered awards for their food and beverage both locally and statewide.

To this day, Don relies on his travels to Mexico and Southern California for inspiration & innovation. Each time returning with new ideas for his restaurants. He also says his travel serves as a comparison for what he sees in metro markets versus what he’s doing in his own restaurants- as he’s always looking for ways to improve his business model. Hard work, determination, and perseverance ultimately paid off for Don who says he’s not done yet. It’s just a matter of time before the third Don Juanz opens and the O’Byrne’s couldn’t be happier being owners of their own brand of restaurants.

LOA Clothing was created in 2021 by best friends Sidney Fulco and Alex Delgado. With over ten years of retail experience each, Sidney and Alex felt they could offer the Shreveport/Bossier City area something exciting and different. The layout of the inside of LOA all started as a drawing on a napkin which eventually turned into the current store design, and the vision truly came to life. Since opening in July of 2021, LOA has launched a website, participated in several pop-ups, and started offering free local delivery! LOA’s mission is to make you step out of your comfort zone when choosing items for your wardrobe. No matter what stage of life you are in, the clothing you choose can make you feel confident and empowered. The brands LOA carries are constantly changing and evolving with what is on trend. They pride themselves on finding the best denim for each body type and being able to elevate basics.

Owners Sidney and Alex believe their success comes from their level of involvement. LOA is pronounced, “lo-ah.” However, it originated from an acronym they came up with, “Loyalty Over All.” After working in retail for 10 years,

Sidney and Alex truly believe customer loyalty is what makes the success of your business. LOA strives to carry brands from different parts of the world, and they only order something once. Many boutiques will keep reordering the same product once something does well, but LOA wants each of their customers to feel like they are not only getting something they love but something that is new and unique. They are constantly looking for areas to grow, evolve, and improve what their store can offer. The goal is for everyone who shops at LOA to leave feeling confident and happy with their purchase. Shop here. Shop now. Shop local.

Southside Animal Hospital is a full-service small animal clinic, where Dr. Bauer and Dr. Campbell offer the most compassionate, comprehensive veterinary care for your pets. They strive to provide the most down-to-earth, yet up-to-date veterinary care by working with several other veterinary entities in the Shreveport-Bossier area to be able to provide next-level diagnostic and therapeutic options for their patients. Whether your pet needs a checkup, updated vaccinations, a bath, a routine surgery, or ongoing management of a chronic condition (just to name a few of the services they provide), the Drs. and staff of Southside Animal Hospital are excited to be a part of your pets care. They truly love what they do- helping pets AND their people!

Dr. Ashlei (Baker) Bauer is a native of Shreveport, having graduated from Caddo Magnet High and Centenary College before pursuing her DVM from Mississippi State University. She has been practicing since 2007 and is the proud owner of Southside Animal Hospital, since the retirement of the clinic’s founder Dr. Ed Loyd in 2018. This acquisition was a big leap of faith for Dr. Bauer, as she left another local clinic where she had been an associate for nearly a decade to pursue her dream of ownership. With the unwavering support, love, and encouragement from her steadfast husband Marty, their three daughters, and her family and friends, Dr. Bauer’s dream has been made into a reality.

It’s all in the family at Southside! Dr. Mallory Campbell is Dr. Bauer’s first cousin and made her debut in 2020 at Southside. Also a native of Shreveport-Bossier, Dr. Campbell is a graduate of Airline High School and LA Tech and received her DVM from LSU in 2015. Dr. Campbell has been a great addition to the clinic- providing extremely thorough care and attention to detail, she has helped countless pets and their owners navigate through some difficult diagnoses.

The team as pictured (left to right): June Benfield, Sammie Rangel, Willow Snider, Dr. Campbell, Dr. Bauer, Melissa Gibson, Melinda Stringer, Lisa Collins, and Kim Snider. Dr. Bauer tells her team often that she cannot do this without them! Each and every person pictured is a vital part of the clinic’s everyday success. Dr. Bauer works hard to lead by example and reminds her staff that “there is no ‘I’ in TEAM” as they go about their daily tasks in keeping the clinic running as efficiently as possible.

Southside Animal Hospital is open 5 days a week and every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. They are always accepting new clients to the Southside family and would be delighted to meet you and your pets!

intensity career work, causes extreme mental fatigue so taking a nature break is a great idea. But a break doesn’t have to wait for the beach. Taking mental breaks from those things that stress us allows nature to expose us to sensory input from natural sources.

Using nature to help the brain and body recalibrate their sensory-processing capabilities helps us to understand that we can teach ourselves to do anything, under any conditions, but not indefinitely as we are still physical beings. The brain is housed in a body that is very much rooted in the physical world and the toll we take on our bodies and brain must be paid. Becoming better than we are requires that we take this into account and work with it, rather than seek to separate the brain

fight or flight of stress and anxiety. The pacing includes using time “off” to still challenge the mind and body in a lesser stressed way, but still building towards

Olympians practice constantly but they also take breaks consistently because they understand that pacing is important to developing muscle memory and brain function. The summer slide or brain drain is real, not because our brains do nothing, but because we are not working them in a manner to stay fit. Picture it as a strict exercise regimen for 9 months then a complete nothing for 3 months. This is not sustainable to the body nor the brain. Consistency is the key.

Follow the ABCs of Summer Tips to avoid that summer slide or brain drain while not over tasking:

horizon or the water and gradually start ignoring that which surrounds it until you are wholly focused to the details. Begin to let those details go one at a time. Therapists often use this technique to assist with pain management. If you can begin to focus on exactly where the pain is in your body, delving deep until you get to the exact point, you can often begin to release it, especially if it is nerve or muscle related.

Control, then Center Yourself.

Often our emotions, tensions and demands around us cause our bodies to get overwhelmed with sensory input until we feel overstretched, overstimulated, and overworked. When this happens, cortisol which is a stress hormone floods our system causing inflammatory responses and even weight gain. Breathing properly and deeply is a technique that assists with

MAY 2023 | SBMAG.NET

gaining control back but often even our breathing is out of control in high stress times. One way to manage this is what I call my ABC method. You count backwards from 100 by 4s and say your ABCs backwards also. It requires your mind to center in logic and come out of fight/flight. For example, count 100Z, 96Y, 92X. If this is too difficult and you feel overwhelmed, start more simply... count and say ABCs like 1A, 2B and then move to a more difficult task. This can help with pain management, anger, and emotional overload. Once you are more controlled, begin to center yourself by stating the things you know to be true about yourself such as your name and the things that make you happy. This technique helps the mind regain control and refocus but also helps the brain learn a pattern of stress reduction in tense times. Practicing it in times of relaxation means when fight/flight is high, the technique can kick in from practice.

Downtime. Time to be without the stimulation of life is important and downtime can also be a time of boredom that stimulates creativity too. Each brain needs boredom or downtime without any stimulation to recharge. Even our devices need downtime and recharging so imagine how much more

the brain needs this. Downtime can be taken in 5-minute increments or on a lovely vacation. But I have seen many people (including me) come back from a vacation in more stress and less rested than before because they did not truly take the time away. We all need downtime of complete disconnection from everything around us. Many times, we get this through naps or rest but making the time to manage your downtime is important to your brain. Brain dumping is extremely important to long term memory health. Whenever you take in a lot of information, it is important that you take time to brain dump that info in a manageable amount into your download memory bank. Research tells us that brain dumping should take place every 15-20 minutes and for young children even more often. This can be as simple as stopping and rephrasing to yourself. Restating what you just heard or even doodling while note taking. Brain dumping is a critical piece of downtime and can assist with acquisition of new memories.

Eat Well. Choosing the right foods and hydration is one of the most important things for the brain and body health. While on vacation, we often tend to consume too much of things we enjoy, splurging and then paying for it

later. By planning, we can make better choices and truly eat well. We can enjoy the environmental attributes of the food offered and still stay on target with our goals. We can choose and should choose high hydration especially if we are in a hot environment.

Fun. Find fun. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune as fun can be had in board games, car games and just memory sharing. Fun is one of the most important and rewarding skills for brain health. Laughter is good medicine and almost as important as meditation. It is good for the soul and spirit. Grab a joke book or a funny movie. Get an app that creates fun songs from your photos. Seek out fun in your environment of travel from chasing crabs on the beach at night to splashing water on your friend or family and paying for it!

Get Going! While I could probably list things that are good for the brain from A-Z, the space is limited in this article so G = go for it! Get a vacation or a staycation planned. It might not be the vacation of your dreams, but your dreams can take backstage to a fun time if you plan to enjoy yourself and take time to do so. Why wait? Go for it!

Miles for Smiles

DENTAL OFFICE ON WHEELS

Serves Children in Caddo, Bossier, and Webster Parishes

Did you know that Louisiana is ranked among the lowest when it comes to the oral health of its citizens, especially the K-12 population? Though there are young Louisianians with dental benefits through Medicaid or private insurance, there are still not enough students being seen by physicians on a consistent basis.

Dental visits usually mean parents and guardians must sacrifice needed time at work and students miss learning time at school having to be checked in and out for dental visits. SBC natives Dr. Jeremy Simms Alexander and his wife Anneka Simms Alexander have made it their mission since 2015 to do their part in providing quality dental care for the K-12 population in this area.

Dubbed the unicorn dental office, Miles for Smiles is a mobile dental facility that provides excellent dental care right at the school. By providing on-site care, parents can rest assured that their child

is receiving the best dental care and education possible without having to leave the school grounds.

The Miles for Smiles mobile office is equipped with all the top-notch dentistry equipment you’d find in a brick and mortar building so that the MFS Team can perform everything from cleanings to x-rays. They are the only facility that offers mobile dentistry in this area. The services are not free, but they do accept most insurance.

area. insurance.

MFS offers dental care and dental education for all students in Caddo, Bossier, and Webster Parishes throughout the entire school year. Mrs. Simms Alexander’s career as an educator and her husband’s career in dentistry began to mesh in 2010 when Dr. Simms Alexander was inspired to bring mobile dentistry to the SBC while working with another mobile schoolbased facility in Atlanta.

“My role within the company is as an Education Coordinator. I am a former educator and I facilitate the transition between the clinical aspect and the

educational aspect. We coordinate and provide resources by partnering with school districts,” says Anneka

board member.

She explains, “It's a true collaborative partnership with school districts. Once we are in partnership with that school district, from there we usually have some type of administrative leadership team meeting. At those meetings, the district leaders make all school site principals

alike. So, we plug in, we feel the climate and the culture of the campus, and we literally become an additional resource to what that campus already has.”

She partners with the school principal to determine an initial start date, and then Miles for Smiles works on a four-week or six-month basis to make sure students

Month, which highlights muscles and bones, a healthy weight, Prevention (CDC) notes that children ages 6 to 17 should have a minimum of one hour of moderate-to-vigorous

meeting these guidelines, with the

published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Journal found that children’s mental health is negatively impacted by too much screen time and not enough physical activity. The study notes that when kids spent more time engaged in physical activity and less time on digital devices, they had improved psychological wellbeing. Those that spent more time on screens reported feelings of anxiety and depression and even had physical manifestations such as stomach aches. Researchers also noted that when kids were sedentary, they reported lower happiness levels regardless of the amount of screen time they had. Additionally, physically active kids were more likely to be better focused and successful in school.

Choices in Physical Activities and Sports

The physical activities a child chooses depends on their personality as well as their likes and dislikes. The activities will also look different as a child grows. Preschoolers need activities that involve play and help them to develop important motor skills. Activities like playing tag, hopping on one foot, or kicking or throwing a ball all assist with developing coordination and balance. Organized, competitive team sports are not recommended until a child is a bit more physically and

cognitively mature. Recommendations currently state that children should be at least eight years old to be able to handle the physical and mental stress of competitive sports. For children under the age of eight, the focus of physical activity should be on fun rather than competition.

Physical activity can be promoted through team or individual sports. Participating in sports improves strength, endurance, and fine and gross motor skills. Individual sports teach motivation and allow youth to compete at their own pace. Examples of individual sports include archery, swimming, golf, and running. Team sports, like baseball, soccer, football, basketball, dance and volleyball emphasize patience, communication, resilience, and collaboration with others by working together as a team.

If possible, youth should participate in a variety of sports for increased health benefits. A 2019 study participated in multiple sports were more likely to take part in recreational physical activity compared to those who did not play any sports or those who participated in only one. Further, kids who played a variety of sports were found to be less prone to

while they can be done individually, they also can be enjoyed

It is also important to remember be physically active when their parents have an active lifestyle. If a parent is inactive, their child will most likely see physical activity as a low priority. Parents can prioritize being active by incorporating movement into their daily routine as a family through activities such as taking a walk after dinner, hiking, or going on bike rides. Participating in those simple activities as a propel them to become active adults. In a 21-year longitudinal who played sports and were physically active between the ages of nine to eighteen were five to six times more likely to be active into adulthood.

It is well understood that some children

Further, some youth will fall into the category of being casual athletes: they may be interested in being active but may not want to be engaged in a competitive athletic environment.

in the driveway or playing catch with friends. To increase the likelihood of a non-athlete child exercising, choose activities that have the potential for lifelong enjoyment such as running, swimming, and hiking. These activities are wonderful because

In summary, not every child will or should be a competitive athlete, but that does not mean they should not participate in team or individual sports to stay physically active. So, get your child involved in sports; participation can provide them with better physical and mental wellness, improved self-confidence, and better overall life satisfaction!

In March of 2022, while participating in FLW’s Louisiana High School State Fishing Championship, Alexis and her teammate Taylor Bacot brought in a five-bass stringer weighing 30.3 pounds—becoming the first all-female duo to win a high school fishing tournament in any state.

Caney Lake is a 5,000-acre man-made lake that sits between Chatham and Jonesboro in Jackson Parish. The state’s record largemouth bass, which weighed around 15.97 pounds, came from these waters. Caney Lake also produces yellow bass, crappie, and bluegill. You can access this lake from Jimmie H. Davis State Park, found in the lake’s southern part.

Offering over 7,000 acres of fishing, Black Lake, situated between Campti and Creston, is one of the best spots for fishing in Louisiana. It’s a cypress tree lake that stretches along 51 miles of shoreline, providing several spots for bass to hide in the root system. The lake has numerous fish species, including spotted bass, blue catfish, channel catfish, and black crappie.

Grand Bayou Reservoir

Just north of Natchitoches, the Grand Bayou Reservoir holds a large population of trophy largemouth bass. Though only a little longer than three miles, the reservoir has an excessive number of green behemoths swimming through these Western Louisiana waters. While the fishing remains decent all year, the reservoir peaks during the summer months when bass head to the depths of the reservoir’s main channel.

One of the best times to be on the water in the Cypress Bayou Reservoir is in the fall. Here, the grass and lily pads don’t die off until late in the year, while the cooling water means the fish are transitioning from summer habitats and stocking up for the winter. Anglers can work spinnerbaits and buzzbaits to significant effect while still hitting the deep water with Carolina rigs during the middle of the day.

With many dozens of docks in the southern portion of the reservoir and a northern shoreline marked by channels, islands, and vegetation, anglers have plenty of real estate to fish without running out of options.

Shreveport-Bossier community and reaching around

What is it? Simply put, it’s an organization comprised of civilians supporting our military community. And if you don’t know about them, you should.

To say they are doing great things for our military doesn’t begin to tell you what they are all about.

Prior to 2014, Trey McGuire, the Founder and Director of Every Warrior, began noticing a trend—and that trend was unacceptable to him. While he was serving in his local church, he saw that the more military service members he met, the more he noticed that they were alone. And that was unacceptable to him, and he set out to do something about it. So, around Thanks giving of that year, he organized a potluck holiday dinner for active military members who did not have a place to go. According to McGuire, “I wanted to show them some love during that time.”

That initial Thanksgiving meal was held at the Old

Reeves Marine building—where approximately 200 military members and families were fed. Afterwards, while cleaning up, McGuire and company hatched a plan to incorporate an organization with the mission to “support, connect, equip, and mobilize the very core of every warrior.” McGuire recalls, “I made a few phone calls, raised a little bit of money, got as many turkeys as we could find.”

Soon after the very first Warrior’s Thanksgiving Feast, Every Warrior Network was formed. In May of 2015, the Network began with “a passion to serve military

members by building relationships with men, women, that they believe their Warriors bring to the table. and families to meet their emotional, relational, phys actions reflect their motto that “This Is Family” as its

“Our mission is not about buildings, it’s not about our events. Our mission is to make sure that every single service member that’s hurting finds love, care, and knows that we have their back,” says McGuire. “We want to be that family for them—that herd of support around them—so when life happens, they get the op portunity to go through it with people who really do

In addition to their Thanksgiving events, which served upwards of 6,000 Warriors and families between 2014 ing services, financial support, a free venue space, dis ability support, food insecurity support, job location

A culture of radical and selfless care, born out of the very pain and experiences of Trey's personal life, has become the foundation which they build on to help Warriors around the world. This culture is one that fights for every Warrior to understand the fact that their own personal experiences are not just what has happened to them, but rather, is what prepares them to use their God-given abilities to influence their world around them.

And while the Warrior’s Thanksgiving Feast is what they’ve been known for—it’s not what they are all about. In truth, Trey McGuire is a civilian leading a military support organization and he, alongside their entire team, strives to have the utmost of integrity so the constant rotation of leadership feels comfortable to continue to allow them to operate in-and-around their installation.

Every Warrior is also affiliated and partnered with many organizations throughout our area, including the Bossier Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Riverpark Church, Broadmoor Baptist Church, Barksdale Federal Credit Union, Origin Bank, Clint Davis Counseling, the Simple Church, multiple Rotary Clubs, and more.

Mikaberidze turns to Napoleon’s Russian counterpart Kutuzov for this book in which he details a military commander who near the end of his 54 years of service chose the difficult path of a controlled retreat rather than face the French Grande Armee head on.

“So much of what is written is from the British or French point of view, so this book is designed to show the other side of the proverbial coin,” he said. “When we look at the other side, especially from the view of Napoleon’s opponents, oftentimes we see the reality that kind of bursts the bubble that surrounds Napoleon.

Russia faced one of its largest quandaries in its history in 1812. The French emperor had captured almost all of continental Europe, and one of the greatest fighting forces in world history set its sight on Russia at the height of France’s power.

“We know quite a bit about what Russians were thinking because we have literally thousands of letters,” Mikaberidze said. “We know they are very concerned, but we also knew they were well aware of what was coming their way because a Russian spy infiltrated the French government and essentially steals reports about Napoleon’s

troops – how many and what type. “They were absolutely aghast to learn that Napoleon was bringing 600,000 men when Russia could mobilize about 250,000,” he notes. But Kutuzov assumed control of the Russian army and executed a controlled retreat that included a scorched earth tactic in which the army destroyed crops and anything else the French military might find useful.

“This is a famous retreat in which Kutuzov exchanged land for time and let strategic attrition, fatigue and the elements decimate the French army before the Russians can muster a force big enough to strike back,” Mikaberidze said. “But there was vociferous resistance to this tactic – even though in hindsight historians recognized it’s the right thing to do. “It takes a particular type of person to insist on this tactic and see it through, even when it means that Russian cities burn, and citizens suffer.”

France won the conflict’s biggest battle outside of Moscow and eventually captured the capital itself, which the Russians themselves burned before withdrawing. Kutusov continued the retreat deeper into Russia, and his resistance and guerilla tactics along with the onset of the Russian Winter meant the French couldn’t find enough resources to sustain themselves locally while their incredibly long supply lines failed. This forced the French to embark on what became a disastrous retreat, escaping the region with just 40,000 troops.

Russia holds Kutusov as one of its heroes, although Mikaberidze adds that the current Russian regime celebrated Kutusov in a peculiar way in their annual September celebration this year. “It’s a celebration of the Battle of Borodino, which the French actually won and would go on take Moscow,” he said. “The government commis-

sioned these massive banners which had this larger-than-life figure Kutusov, a less er-known 19th century figure and then two figures from the war in Ukraine going on right now.

“It’s the juxtaposition of a legendary mil itary commander like Kutusov leading the new generation just like he led Rus sia to what clearly ended up being a great victory against France. Every nation sees the importance of history and crafting a particular view of history – we can call it national myth or national narrative. But Russia, particularly in the last 23 years or so, there’s a focus on a nationalistic inter pretation of history. The glorification of the past, this narrative of reviving Russian greatness. Co-opting historical figures like Kutusov for a specific purpose – we won once, we can win again -- are part and par cel of it.”

In April, Dr. Mikaberidze was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to undertake a transna tional and comparative research project in Europe, allowing him to conduct research on European and Caucasian history for the next two years. Founded by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946, the Fulbright program is considered one of the most widely recognized international education exchange programs in the world. About 2/3 of the approximately 8000 Fulbright Scholarships go to students and 1/3 to, pro fessionals, artists, and scholars to teach, conduct research, and carry out profes sional projects around the world.

“Much of what has been written on the history of the Caucasus tends to be in ward-looking, national history,” Mik aberidze said. “I want to produce a study examining Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia at the onset of modern era, and ex ploring their shared historical past. I will take a comparative approach to see how the experiences of these nations compare to historical developments in Europe and elsewhere.”

The three Caucasian nations, sandwiched between Russia, Turkey and Iran as well as hemmed in by the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, are one of the gateways between Eu rope, Western Asia, and the Middle East.

His research will focus on the spread of the Enlightenment and Enlightened Despo tism, a form of government in which mon archs co-opted Enlightenment ideas to strengthen their authority but also to improve the daily lives of their people. He will travel to all three Caucasus countries and parts of Europe, conducting research at national archives and consulting with local historians. He will continue to teach history courses at LSUS and plans to undertake research trips overseas during winter and summer breaks.

training during the annual Match Day celebration. Each year, on the third Friday in March, fourth-year medical students discover where they have “matched” to for their residency training, the first step of their careers as physicians. The day is filled with emotion as students reflect on their accomplishments leading up to this career-defining moment, surrounded by family and friends.

This year, the National Resident Matching Program of the Association of American Medical Colleges, or NRMP®, reported that the 2023 Residency Match is the largest in NRMP’s 70-year history. There were 42,952 applicants searching for a match with only 40,375 available positions leaving over 2,500 individuals who did not match.

WILLIS-KNIGHTON CANCER CENTER PATIENTS INCLUDED IN GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH

Groundbreaking research from a clinical trial that included leading cancer centers from across the nation and the world could change the way doctors treat endometrial cancer. Willis-Knighton was not only part of this study but provided the second largest number of participants in North America. The study has shown statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in progression free survival for women who have primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer.

“This is the biggest news in years for patients with advanced endometrial cancer,” said Destin Black, MD, gynecological oncology surgeon at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center. She was the principal investigator for the clinical trial at Willis-Knighton, published March 27, 2023, in The New England Journal of Medicine. The Ruby phase 3 trial is an ongoing international randomized, double-blind, multicenter study that included 494 patients worldwide. Willis-Knighton provided 22 of those participants.

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy in the United States, Dr. Black noted. It is the fourth most common cancer among females in the U.S. after breast, lung, and colon cancer, and is the sixth most common cancer among women worldwide.

“If endometrial cancer is early stage, current treatment usually consists of surgery alone or surgery with radiation. If endometrial cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage, treatment consists of a combination of chemotherapy with possible surgery,” Dr. Black said. “The findings of this trial now show that the addition of immunotherapy – regimen containing dostarlimab – to standard chemotherapy is associated with a significantly lower risk of progression or death.”

LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CELEBRATES 50TH MATCH DAY

140 LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine students learned where they will go to complete their residency

LSU Health Shreveport is proud to announce that 98.6% of the School of Medicine’s applicants matched, proving that LSUHS remains a strong competitor at the national level. Of the 2023 class, 29.3% will be staying at LSU Health Shreveport for their residency and 37.8% of graduates have matched to an LSU residency site. 45.7% of the graduates will be staying in Louisiana, which is critical with Louisiana facing a shortfall in the number of physicians needed to meet the healthcare demands of the state. 49.3% are entering in primary care residencies comprised of Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics.

OCHSNER LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT NEUROSURGEON FIRST IN STATE TO PERFORM SINGLE POSITION ROBOTIC SPINE FUSION SURGERY

Dr. Stanley Hoang, a neurosurgeon at Ochsner

LSU Health Shreveport, is the first physician in the state of Louisiana to perform a robotic single position prone lumbar fusion surgery using the Medtronic Mazor robot. The surgery, which is used to treat disc problems in the lower back, is typically performed in two parts.

“Traditionally, when we do these operations, it’s as two separate operations,” said Hoang. “The first one is when the patient lies in a lateral position. And then they have to be turned in the prone position for the second part of the procedure. Now with the robot, it allows us do everything in one position. So it saves time,

86 MAY 2023 | SBMAG.NET

it saves resources, and it makes surgery faster and more efficient. And also more safe.”

Hoang says if a person has had no success in treating back pain through physical therapy or pain management, it may be time to see a neurosurgeon. With this minimally invasive single position robotic spine fusion surgery, a patient could be back to normal activities in a much shorter amount of time.

LOUISIANA’S FIRST LADY MEETS WITH OCHSNER

In March, Tracey Moffatt, Ochsner system chief nursing officer and system vice president of quality; Sheree Stephens, regional VP of quality at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport; and Donna Martin, chief nursing officer of Ochsner Baptist, met with Louisiana’s First Lady, Donna Hutto Edwards, to discuss human trafficking issues in Louisiana. The group met to talk about how health systems and community partners can collaborate to best meet the needs of victims throughout the state. Human Trafficking has become a major health care crisis. It is a $150 billion industry that recruits, transports, transfers, or harbors persons by means of threat or use of force, coercion, fraud, or deception to exploit person into labor or sexual exploitation.

Healthcare systems can play a major role in decreasing and changing the landscape of the human trafficking crisis. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), up to 88% of victims had accessed healthcare services during their trafficking situation, many times hoping someone would take notice. Ochsner and Ochsner LSU Health identified the need to assist victims and have implemented programs that help front line health care workers recognize the red flags of human trafficking. Louisiana ranks 13th in the U.S. with a human trafficking incidence rate of 3.44 per 100,000 people

CYBER INNOVATION CENTER PARTNERSHIP, PROGRAM LEADS TO EXPECTED $10 MILLION IN SAVINGS FOR THE AIR FORCE

Cyber Innovation Center’s partnership with Air Force Global Strike Command added to its $250 Million-plus return on investment with a recent effort saving $10 Million for the Air Force. The Global Strike National Security Fellowship Program, administered by the CIC through its partnership intermediary agreement with AFGSC, utilized the Dante software that resulted in the preliminary savings. In his testimony before the U.S. House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, AFGSC commander Gen. Thomas Bussiere stated, “…Global Strike National

Security Fellowship Program utilize[s] a small team of interns trained in coding, automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to develop tailored analytic tools for bomber operations.”

Jonathan McBride, a Louisiana Tech University graduate student and a fellow in the program, served as the lead for Dante modeling and simulation of nuclear security physical features, manpower and systems supporting the multi-billion dollar Weapon Generation Facility military construction project. “The cost-savings were generated when the program faced cancellation due to cost overruns and McBride’s inputs not only saved money but help save the program,” said Dr. Paul Hausgen, Deputy Chief Scientist at AFGSC. “His performance-oriented inputs directly drove efficiency improvements in the physical design features and future manpower support required to provide security for the facilities.”

Now in its third year, the Fellowship program brings together university junior, senior, and graduate students and AFGSC project champions to foster collaboration and innovation while also exposing members in academia to Department of Defense careers. “The Fellowship is centered around talented students working with their mentors and partners to achieve impactful national security outcomes. Fellows in the program have produced tangible results while discovering major career opportunities at the same time,” said Jeff Smith, CIC project manager. Due to his performance and efforts, McBride has been hired by the Air Force as a civil service employee to continue his work in Dante.

SWEPCO ANNOUNCES RELIABILITY IMPROVE MENT PROJECT IN SHREVEPORT

Southwestern Electric Power Co., an American Electric Power (Nasdaq: AEP) company, announced a construction project to support reliability enhancements within Shreveport. The project spans approximately 2 miles and begins at the South Shreveport substation on La. Highway 3132 and continues along Linwood Avenue to its intersection with Flournoy Lucas Road. SWEPCO crews, together with our contracted partners, will replace approximately 89 poles and upgrade Distribution lines by increasing the wire size to enable better reliability. The work will deliver increased capacity and improved reliability to each homeowner located south of the Shreveport substation.

Work is underway and will continue for several months, weather permitting. SWEPCO crews have identified optimal project times so as not to interfere with school schedules. SWEPCO plans to complete the work near Calvary Baptist Academy in May when school is no longer in session. Temporary lane closures and possible traffic delays along Linwood Avenue will likely occur during the project. Some customers will receive additional communication about pre-planned outages during the project.

DWARF HAMSTERS

Dwarf hamsters can make great pets for the right person. They are cute, small, and relatively easy to care for, making them popular for people looking for a small pet. Whether you’re looking for your first pet or something for your kids, hamsters can make great pets and can be really friendly with humans once they’ve been tamed. There are several different species of dwarf hamsters commonly kept as pets, including the Roborovski dwarf hamster, Campbell’s dwarf hamster, and the Winter White dwarf hamster. Each species has its own unique personality and care requirements, so it’s important to research and choose the one that best fits your lifestyle.

When caring for dwarf hamsters, providing them with a clean and

and vegetables. Like days

safe living environment is essential. This means regularly cleaning their cage, providing them with a variety of toys and activities to keep them mentally stimulated, and feeding them a balanced diet of hamster food and fresh vegetables. It is also important to handle your dwarf hamster regularly to socialize them and help them bond with you. Like any new friendship, it takes time to get to know someone and feel comfortable with them. After a few days of giving them food and water, you should have a new furry friend!

Whether or not you should get a dwarf hamster as a pet ultimately depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. Four little paws, two bright eyes, and a set of twitchy whiskers. There’s nothing cuter than a pet hamster! But before getting a dwarf hamster as a pet, remember to consider your lifestyle, living arrangements, and ability to provide for their care. They are also nocturnal animals, which means they are most active at night and may not be suitable for everyone’s schedule.

Here are a few reasons why someone might consider getting a dwarf hamster as a pet:

Ř Small size

Dwarf hamsters don’t take up a lot of space, making them a good option for people who live in small apartments

or people who don’t have a lot of extra space in their homes.

Ř Lifespans

They have a relatively short lifespan of about 2-3 years, although some may live longer with the correct care.

Ř Low-maintenance

Dwarf hamsters are relatively low-maintenance pets, making them a good choice for someone who wants a pet but doesn’t have a lot of extra time. They don’t require daily walks or grooming like some other pets, and they’re generally self-sufficient.

Ř Entertaining

Dwarf hamsters are cute and fun to watch, especially when they’re running on their wheel or playing with toys. They can provide entertainment and companionship for their owners.

Ř Affordable

Compared to some other types of pets, dwarf hamsters are relatively affordable to purchase and care for. They don’t require expensive equipment or specialized diets, and their veterinary care is typically less expensive than that of larger pets.

Ř Educational

Caring for a dwarf hamster can be an educational experience, especially for children. They can learn about the responsibility of pet ownership, as well as the behaviors and habits of these interesting little animals.

to play,

Ultimately, if you’re considering getting a dwarf hamster as a pet, it’s important to do your research and make sure you’re prepared to provide them with the care and attention they need to thrive. This mediummaintenance pet is a wonderful option when making the big decision to get a pet. But remember, they are active creatures, meaning that they love to explore and play, and they thrive in an interactive environment. This means you will be an essential part of their life and they will develop a relationship with you. They are small, adorable, and entertaining animals that can fill life with extra fun, joy, and companionship.

NO JOKE Moms NO JOKE #1 are#1 & that's

Moms

MThe setting of the old joke is Cell Block D, where night after night, different guys call out different numbers, randomly, and the rest of the inmates start laughing. They’ve heard the same jokes for so long, they just tell a joke by whatever number they’ve assigned it.

One guy hollers “4!” Chuckles everywhere.

“18!” Ripples of laughter.

“Hey guys…8!” Inmates start slapping their knees. Tears of joy.

Like that.

So one night a newbie inmate who’s been listening to this for a week waits until it’s quiet and then yells, “3!” He expects the usual explosion of laughter.

Silence.

He says it again, only with less confidence.

“3!?”

Nothing.

“Why isn’t anyone laughing?” he asks his veteran bunkmate.

“Well,” the old inmate says, “I guess it’s just that some guys can tell a joke, and some guys can’t.”

(If you’d been in prison, I wouldn’t have had to write all that. I could have just written, “187.”)

The point is that on this Mother’s Day, most moms should be in prison. No, wait. That’s not right. Most of us children of moms — that’s it — should be in some sort of Kid Lockup for breaking first Mom Laws. And to save them time and air and nervous breakdowns, moms should have a list of violations or Mom Sayings and a number that corresponds with each, like our comedian prisoners have.

For instance, a mom could yell “1!” Naturally, that would mean, “If Jimmy/Sally jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?”

“2!” might be, “Clean up your room!”

“3!” would be “Stop running!”

“4!” is “Hurry up!”

“5!” could be “Stop hitting your (brother/sister/grandpa/kitty cat)!” or it could just be “Stop!”

Consider “6!”: “Because I said so.”

“Because I said so.” A Mom Classic, right there. This list is about as endless as a mother’s love. There’s “Make sure you put on clean underwear; you might get in a wreck.” And “I’m not your maid!” And “Have you done your homework?”

Sometimes they are challenging. “Well go live with THEM then!”

Or “What did you say? WHAT did you say?!”

And “ANSWER me when I ask you a question!”

Some Momspeak deals with numbers, like “I’m counting to three” or “How many times do I have to tell you?”

(I always answered “142.” Never went over as I’d hoped.)

At some point, often before breakfast, I would get on my mom’s “last nerve,” the double first cousin of “I’ve had it up to here with you today.” Funny, but I never got on my dad’s last nerve, for some reason. He had either more nerves or a shorter fuse. But then, battles with dads are usually fixed bayonets, quickly settled matters. Moms will give you more rope.

“Don’t make me have to say this again…”

But we did, and moms — without the handy number system — had to say it again.

And again. And again. And after time in Kid Lockup, we’d be on the loose. Again.

Thankfully, moms have short memories for what we did wrong and long memories for what we did right. Of course, that’s a much easier — and a much smaller — list to remember.
