EDITOR

L

ast month, we gave Shreveport and Bossier City one of the best Top Doctors issues in the history of our magazine. Our team worked diligently to make sure all the doctors’ names were spelled correctly – and boy, did we have some difficult names to spell – and that the information we had for each one was accurate. I congratulated everyone who put such effort into this coveted issue. Working with the doctors, their staff, and area hospitals seemed so much easier this year. As the editor, I was more than pleased with our hard work. Then, just as I was so smugly patting everyone on the back, myself included, we get an email from one of our doctors. You guessed it. The congratulations were premature as we had left one of the doctors off the list. We can correct it on our digital edition but once the printed version is out, there is really nothing to be done about it except to apologize. So, I would like to apologize to Dr. Carlee Gilley of Southern Roots. It is my job to make sure all the T’s are crossed and the I’s are dotted. I am truly sorry. On a bright note, you can read all about her and see her beautiful face on page 96 in the 2020 Top Doctors issue. But wait, there is more! November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and this year, celebrating the holidays with a loved one suffering from this disease might involve a little more creativity on your part. For that matter, celebrating the holidays in 2020 will require greater flexibility on everyone’s part while remaining safe. SB offers tips on how to do just that in two of our feature stories. Plus, if getting away to a secluded spot not a half hour away from downtown Shreveport is on your Christmas list, you will love reading about First Cast Cabin. And yes, you might be fishing for your holiday meal. We’ll also feature restaurants and entertainment to fill your holidays with special memories as a well as our yearly Holiday Gift Guide. Pull on your coat, don your mask and get after your Christmas gift list. And don’t forget to wash your hands!

rowing up in a tiny Texas town, Centenary College professor Don Hooper never dreamed that a life in the arts would be part of his future. He was on track to being a Veterinarian when he graduated from high school with his sixteen or so other classmates. Those thoughts changed the day an English teacher brought the idea of putting on a play to everyone’s attention. That play opened the door for Hooper to receive a scholarship to East Texas State University if he minored in Theatre. He majored in Chemistry and minored in Theatre for two years until making the decision to fully pursue the arts. He eventually received his Bachelor of Arts and went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois. It was there that he took a keen interest in set design and lighting. Hooper was drawn to set design because some of the problem-solving aspects to set design remind him of his youth. Growing up on a farm, he was used to creating things and solving problems with steel and lumber. With set design, he was able to solve artistic problems with those same tools. For a brief time after receiving his MFA, Don taught high school, but soon found that teaching high school was not for him. He decided to take a shot at teaching at the college level and began his search for a place that would be right for him. One day he attended a production at Centenary College that would change his life. The play, which covered the HIV/AIDS epidemic of that time, brought a human spirit to the deadly virus, and showed Hooper that there were so many options when it came to putting on a production. It was at that moment that he decided to make Centenary his home and the rest his history. Since joining the Centenary family back in 1987, Don has designed and taken part in around 270 different productions through Centenary’s Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. Though he has been part of several productions, two of his most memorable are from the 1990’s. The first was a production of Evita starring SB Magazine’s own Seva May belting out harmonious tunes. The second was a production called The Bat that his then young son loved so much. The play was a comedy spoof of mystery plays and involved a series of amazing domino effects that would reveal secret treasures and such things. In over three decades, Don has designed some of the most breathtaking and intricate

ROOTED IN TRADITION sets in the Shreveport/Bossier area. He is well known and respected in the local arts world and beloved throughout the Centenary campus. His passion for his students and the arts is more than inspiring. Some years back, Hooper, along with a fellow professor, wanted to enhance the arts experience for students. That desire eventually gave birth to what is known as the Centenary in Paris program. Every August since 2014, all incoming arts freshmen enrolled in certain classes get to take part in this program that dives into the arts scene in Paris, the burlesque scene. With the production Moulin Rouge as the backdrop, students get to journey to Paris, France for 8-10 days. They experience authentic burlesque art and historic art while visiting The Louvre and other must-see museums. The highlight of the trip is when everyone gets dressed up for a fancy French dinner and authentic burlesque show. Being that the program is included in tuition, students only cover costs for souvenirs and things like that. This experience has been known to inspire students in so many ways to pursue various dreams and artistic avenues. When it comes to future goals, Hooper’s focus is bringing Marjorie Lyons Playhouse into the 21st century. One of the ways he has already begun doing that is by initiating the grant process for a 3D printing lab. He is also working on getting LED lighting installed in the Playhouse. These things will help students learn the latest techniques of the theatre world as well as make for even more vivid productions for the audience. As much as Hooper loves being a professor of theatre and dance at Centenary College, he knows that it is not something he will want to do forever. Whenever the time is right, he would like to retire and do freelance work with other theatres. His goal is to inspire students and lovers of art all over for as long as he can. Until that time comes, he loves to and will continue to inspire his Centenary family and the Shreveport/Bossier community.

BREAKING THE HOMELESS CYCLE

I

One Family at a Time

n 1988 Providence House was established when two First Presbyterian Church members, Mary Anne Selber and Jean Sayres, recognized a need for shelter services for northwest Louisiana homeless families with children. First named Evergreen House and managed by the Salvation Army, the institution served only as a temporary shelter until 1992 when it became clear that there was a greater need for transitional housing for homeless families. The organization was renamed Providence House with the new mission of finding permanent solutions to help break the homeless cycle. To address the root causes that led these families to homelessness and ultimately direct them toward a self-sufficient and propitious life, an extensive support system was developed. Since its transformation, the Providence House has continued to grow and strives to help homeless families in our greater community. The ultimate goal at Providence House is to promote an honored community that exists without homeless families. Through acts of compassion, empowerment, and advocacy, families have an opportunity to flourish as equal members of our community. Providence House gives hope to homeless families by addressing the core reasons that lead to homelessness giving families a chance to start

fresh and gain independence through education, housing, and supportive services. Education and Job Skills Training are the hallmarks of the work at Providence House. Providence House operates a 4-STAR Child Development Center (CDC) exclusively for homeless and low-income children 0 to 5 years old. They also have a full-time adult HiSet/GED program called Working to Learn, where adult residents have the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma with an option of dual enrollment with Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC). In 2019 BPCC established an additional instructional site at Providence House that serves as home to a full-service Workforce Development Program that is open to the public. The “House at Providence House accommodates up to 27 families (80 people). In addition, the city of Shreveport gives support to Providence House, helping them manage up to 20 apartments throughout northwest Louisiana. The objective is to provide housing quickly and give the necessary support needed for homeless families to become self-sufficient. The supportive services at Providence House include full-time case managers, on-site counseling, on-site nurs-

ing care, a full-time dietary team, and a full-time teaching staff. Along with a dedicated administrative staff, this team of 40 provides a complement of supportive services, including financial literacy, parenting and life skills classes, and employment preparation. Providence House helps over 150 families in crisis each year enjoy a very special Christmas through their “Adopt-a-Family” program. This program is an annual drive that provides gifts to homeless families in the Providence House program. Sponsors “adopt” a family and purchase gifts from the recipient family’s wish list. This selfless gesture can make a huge difference in the life of a family by providing them with a joyous holiday season. One way to help support this inspirational program is by purchasing Twice Blessed Holiday Cards. These cards are a thoughtful way to share the holiday spirit with family and friends while helping Providence House continue their year-round work of serving more than 100 homeless children daily. Along with hope, your gift of $10 per card ensures that homeless families with children have food, clothing, and shelter. The Christmas card will be personalized with your name, your company’s name, and a special message. The envelope will be hand-addressed, the stamp affixed, and then mailed in time for the holiday season. Rejoice in the holiday season knowing your gifts will touch your family and friends in a very meaningful way – by helping homeless families with children.

COCKTAILS & CUISINE

HOLY Hibiscus!

I

t's a beautiful day in Cholula, Puebla in Central Mexico. You're sitting on a veranda thinking of how you're going to spend your day. What do you do first? Go to the largest pyramid in the Americas, The Great Pyramid of Cholula or "Tlachihualtepetl"? Do you go see the ornate, beautiful cathedrals and churches? Do you go to the markets where you can buy their world famous pottery? You do it all, but first... you need to eat. And eat a traditional meal, with their traditional drinks and cocktails. This day wouldn't be perfect without hibiscus everything! The Jamaica Flower (pronounced ha-MIKE-uh), known

to many of us as hibiscus, isn't just a pretty flower. All around the world, and especially in Mexico, the flower is used for various reasons. Here, we are going to talk about food and drink.

The traditional drink with lunch is Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus tea/agua de fresca). Known for its tart taste and rich color, the drink can be had cold or hot. It is made with hibiscus concentrate. The process of making your own hibiscus concentrate can be grueling, but the outcome is delicious. You can find the concentrate already bottled at La Ranchera, El Novillo, Whole Foods, and Super 1. Pair your hibiscus tea with hibiscus tacos! Rest assured that no part of this plant goes to waste. After the concentrate,

you can fry the flowers to make tacos! Tacos de Jamaica is a vegetarian alternative to meat tacos, but just as good if not better! Now, for the ultimate hibiscus drink. The Calaverita. It is better than just a margarita. It is refreshing and vibrant, with a kick. Aside from the fact that hibiscus is delicious in every way it is cooked, the health benefits are reason enough to try it. According to nutritionfinder.org, Tufts University, and WebMD, studies have proven that hibiscus tea can lower blood pressure up to six points, drinking three cups daily. Two cups showed the same effect as certain medications without the side effects. (Talk to your doctor before self-treatment or medication, please!) The list of health benefits goes on! It is High in Vitamin C. Hibiscus decreases bad cholesterol while increasing good cholesterol. It can help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Liver steatosis may improve, which could reduce liver failure and encourage liver repair. This pretty little flower may also reduce the invasiveness of mouth cancer and possibly help prevent the spread of prostate and stomach cancer cells. Studies have shown that as an antibacterial, it inhibits E. Coli with promising results of fighting other harmful bacteria. If all of that wasn't enough to convince you that we should take a page from Cholula's recipe book, this flower helps with obesity, weight loss, reduced body weight, body fat, and body mass index after just 12 weeks. So you get to eat and drink amazing food that doesn't hurt you? Not sure about you, but I'm definitely upping my intake of anything hibiscus. Because holy hibiscus helps everything.

t’s never too early to start getting ready for Christmas! If you’ve been out and about lately, you’ve seen Christmas decorations on display in several of the local retail stores. And we haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving. Even more reason to get a head start on Sarah Lowder your holiday baking! But first, you will need a plan. And a list. “Mise en place” is a culinary term that refers to having ingredients and tools in their place and ready to go before you begin your first step. At Lowder Baking Company, we love our “mise en place” - especially when we start our bake days each morning at 2:00am! Following a plan and accurately measuring your ingredients are essential for making consistent, high quality baked goods. Here are a few tips and tricks that will hopefully help you have a stress-free and successful experience in the kitchen this year!

Break out your favorite, classic recipes and decide what you’ll be baking. Don’t be afraid to attempt something new too!

Check expirations dates on all staple ingredients in your pantry. Items like baking powder and baking soda do have a shelf life - and expired batches can affect the way they react during baking.

Make a thorough grocery list (and check it twice!) for anything else you will need.

Take an inventory of your cake pans, cookie sheets, pie pans, etc. A cooling rack for cookies and bread will always come in handy.

Set a time schedule for your day(s) of baking. Allot for time spent on prep, mixing, kneading, proofing, and cooling – not just bake times.

To keep cookies soft, store them in an air tight container.

Wrap the edges of your pie crusts with foil for the first half of your bake time! Remove foil for the second half, until crust is light golden.

To soften your butter quickly, cut into small chunks and let stand for about 15 minutes.

advertisement •

Measure your ingredients carefully, accurately, and precisely. When possible, use a digital kitchen scale and measure by the gram.

Don’t over proof or under proof your bread! Be sure to keep your dough in a humid, slightly warm environment while proofing. Too warm, and the yeast will die and not rise. Too cold, and the yeast will not function properly.

morning? It’s almost as good as our fresh baked breads you can serve for your Christmas dinner or Hannukah celebrations. We very much enjoy helping you create special memories with loved ones this holiday season. Happy Baking - and have a wonderful holiday! Sarah and her husband, Preston own Lowder Baking Company located on Fern Avenue in Shreveport, LA.

Get your family to join in, especially kids. Set up work stations and assign tasks to each person. Keep it simple for more enjoyment and don’t worry about the mess - it can always be cleaned up. These will be memories that you all will cherish for many years.

If you don’t have the time, or the knack for baking, don’t panic. Lowder Baking Company is working overtime to prepare for your holiday baking needs. We make it easy for you! You can make many festive memories while snacking on cookies as you decorate your Christmas tree. The kids will love gifting cookie plates, pastry boxes, and baskets of baked goods for teachers, grandparents, and their favorite friends. Hot chocolate and Lowder cookies go hand in hand during the holiday season. We also hear that Santa loves a plate of fresh baked Lowder cookies with milk on Christmas Eve! And is there anything better than waking up to Lowder cinnamon rolls on Christmas

HOME MATTERS

TEN TOASTY

TIPS FOR YOUR HOME THIS WINTER

T

he winter months can be a beautiful time, but before you get your marshmallow coats and ear warmers out, there are some things you need to do. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the cold and keep your home nice and cozy during the winter months. 1.

32

Cover outside faucets and pipes with styrofoam to help keep them from freezing. They can be found at Ivy Lumber, Custom Built, and any local hardware store. Pier and beam houses need to have adequate insulation, especially cast iron, so they don’t crack and explode. Hide the hose. Remove all hoses from the faucets, store them in a place you will remember in the spring, and insulate the faucet. In severe cold weather, make sure to drip your pipes to help prevent freezing. 2. Clean out your gutters in order to prevent water buildup and the possibility of ice dams around your roof.

10. Finally, set the thermostat. Keep your thermostat at least 65 degrees for a comfortable environment.

3. Trim the trees and clear the yard. Rain and freezing rain can weaken the trees and make the branches more susceptible to breaking and falling. This creates a hazard to your house, your vehicles, and even yourself and others.

Now grab a hot cup of cocoa, your favorite blanket, and snuggle in for cozy nights.

4. Clear the driveway and walk areas so visibility is clear. These paths can be slippery when the temperatures dip below freezing. Make sure all handrails and steps 5. Service your heater. Your furnace should be inspected at least once a year. The same is true for your chimney if you have one in your home. All debris and build-up should be removed in order for your heating systems to operate properly. 6. Set the thermostat. Keep your thermostat at least 65 degrees for a comfortable environment. 7.

Make sure your attic and walls are well insulated in order to guarantee that the heat you are running through the house isn’t seeping into the outside air.

R O O F I N G BAYOUSTATEROOFING.COM

8. Check for holes or any exposed areas that the cold air might seep in. Caulk any problem areas. Weather stripping should also be installed around doors and windows to keep your heat inside and the cold air outside. 9. Triple check the smoke detectors in your home. House fires are more common during the winter months. Check the batteries monthly on all smoke detectors.

ASBESTOS?

hreveport’s beautiful Highland areas have not only charm and history but architecture. One of the little known facts about many homes in the area is that much of the older roofing use asbestos. These roofs are not exclusive to Highland, but any areas with older homes and buildings. Before panic sets in, it’s ok! The product is wrapped and not dangerous. In fact, roofing that contains asbestos can be up to a 100-year product. But here is what you need to know: •

They quit making asbestos roofing material, on a large scale, in the ‘80s

It is a 100-year product

Asbestos shingles cannot be duplicated or repaired

One cracked shingle, containing asbestos, can get you an entirely new roof

To increase durability, copper slate roofs and stainless steel roofs are available.

(copper roof and other pic?)

Studies and research are being done to make asbestos processing safe for those who work with it in order to continue its use.

First Cast Cabin the Best Kept Secret on Caddo Lake

ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN SEDUCED BY CADDO LAKE, it becomes a picture postcard of the mind, fixated with alluring images of cypress trees, coontail moss and water hyacinth. If you want to escape the chaos of everyday life, there is a rentable, lakeside cabin that’s nestled in Adam Bailey the Piney Woods of Uncertain, Texas. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Shreveport, it offers the perfect weekend getaway. Just remember to bring your own groceries! Caddo Lake, a 23-mile-long waterway that straddles the Texas-Louisiana border, sits midway between Marshall and Shreveport. It is one of only a handful of places where you can wander alone, in a tranquil delirium for hours,

36

never encountering another human being, believing you are completely alone. Anybody who knows anything about this mysterious, yet majestic, body of water knows it’s almost impossible to find a credible map of the lake— there is no place like. Yet, there seems to be an aversion towards its remoteness—a prejudice almost—as if the lake and all its overpowering vegetation were turning inward on itself, protecting it from any outsiders. This secretive, almost forbidden quality, is what helps make it the most beautiful lake in either Texas or Louisiana. The truth is everyone needs to see, and understand, its majesty. One of the best ways to experience Caddo Lake is by renting a cozy, waterfront cabin on Texas’ Taylor Island in the City of Uncertain. There, nestled at the edge of a pine thicket, beneath a grove of aged cypress trees, is a small wood-frame bunkhouse covered in shiplap siding. It is known as the First Cast Cabin. If you didn’t know it was there you would almost certainly miss it.

Its name is derived from a fishing trip the owner’s wife had scheduled with a local professional fishing guide. Her husband’s first cast, unbeknownst to either him or her at the time, was made directly in front of this cabin. Two years later, upon purchasing the property as their dream lakefront get-a-way, the couple appropriately named it what it’s known as today. To get there, simply drive through Uncertain’s quaint commercial strip, an aged two-lane road scattered with typical waterfront establishments (the B & D Café, Caddo Outpost, and Johnson’s Ranch Marina to name a few), and cross the bridge to the island. The atmosphere is so dense with moisture at the water’s edge that everything is damp and mossy. But that’s what makes renting this cabin so alluring. The First Cast Cabin puts you right in the middle of Caddo Lake’s splendor. Renting the First Cast Cabin is perfect for any occasion— anniversary, birthday, or weekend getaway. Originally built in the early 1900s, the exterior is plain and down-toearth, but don’t let that fool you. Though the owners love clean lines and openness of contemporary architecture, they wanted something that was simple and easily tied to the area’s rural landscape—something like a camp. It’s this modest design that makes it that more appealing. In 2017, the interior was fully renovated around the desire for a large living space that was open and could

easily connect to the outdoors. Even though the exterior remains grounded to its natural surroundings post-renovation, the interior is now full of modern conveniences and vintage touches. At 1000 square feet, sitting less than three-hundred feet from the water, there are a plethora of activities the property offers—from bird watching to fishing to simply doing nothing. In the summer months, visitors have their own private access to the lake, as well as the use of two kayaks. Although largemouth bass fishing is good throughout the year, the time to fish for a trophy mount is in the spring, with March being the most productive month. During a winter visit, in between fishing for crappie or white bass, you can snuggle up while making a campfire at the stone firepit. As you’ll see below, this is a perfect combination that allows any visitor to create memories all year round.

Open Living Room and Dining

The open floor plan blends together the living and dining areas, which create separation while preserving the open flow of the space. The living room is perfect for relaxing and entertaining, with an L-shaped sectional in the corner. The low arms of this piece, along with the matching accent chair combination, allows the room to feel open and airy. The color palette—cream and white—give the space a muted, neutral tone. Cable television and Wifi are accessible on the wall-mounted, flat-screen television. Division from the dining area is created in the space, not by walls or dividers, but by using accent chairs that run alongside the “living area” of the open floor plan, which successfully acts as a helpful room divider. Large windows look out onto the back porch— with Caddo Lake beyond—creating gorgeous, natural views which abound all year long. Overall, considering the constraints, it’s a clever use of the space.

Kitchen

The biggest hallmark of this galley-like kitchen design is its layout—cabinet units, counters, and appliances connect in straight lines. It includes ceiling hung cabinets and subway tile backsplash, all while utilizing its vertical space with great efficiency. All of this maximizes storage and requires little movement to accomplish tasks. It’s fully stocked with all the basics, like pots and pans, oil, salt and pepper, baking sheets, dishes, and utensils. The gas stove and a coffee bar are all within an arm’s reach. There’s a lot to love about this classic design.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom, bright in cooler hues of creamy pale gray, remains a private retreat for any couple, tucked away in the corner of the cabin. Simple fur-

niture and wall sconces give this hideaway a simple, organic feel. Central heating and air, designer sheets, and pillows soft as clouds all make for a blissful night’s sleep.

Guest Room

The guest room is more about comfort, not about space. A queen-size bed features an upholstered, button-tufted headboard with a brand new Casper Tempur-pedic mattress and comfy pillows. The space is modern and fun with a color palette of gray and white—which, overall, is earthy yet updated.

Bathroom, Storage and Laundry Room

The hybrid, jack-and-jill bathroom connects the two bedrooms, while built-ins and floating shelves serve as extra storage space. An automatic light switch helps in finding your way around at night. Any guest, especially those staying for several days, has all the offerings of the extra little things one might need in this fully outfitted laundry room.

Back Porch

The perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee, watch the sunrise, have a meal, or enjoy reading a book on the loveseat. This screened-in back porch keeps the bugs out and the two celling fans keep it cool. The wooden steps leading from the cabin to the dock—using reclaimed wood from the old dock—give the porch a nostalgic, historic touch.

Beyond the stone landing, a set of stone pavers leads down to the wooden dock—providing direct access to Caddo Lake for boating, fishing or anyone who wants to leap off the dock.

The sounds of nature and beautiful waterfront views will make you feel like time has stopped.

With Jefferson, Texas, a short twenty-minute drive from the cabin, there are scores of fun- filled opportunities that surround Caddo Lake, including Riverbend Restaurant, Big Pines Lodge, and, Aseret Mexican Restaurant. Paul Keith, a fishing guide and photographer, will pick you up at the dock for a full or half day tour of Caddo Lake.

Firepit and Beyond

As the deck’s stairs lead down to a transitional area—a stone landing path angled toward the circular patio with a stone firepit—there is no better way to enjoy the fall weather than to entertain family and friends along the property’s sixty feet of Caddo Lake frontage. It is a great gathering space to warm up next to the fire when the cool temperatures arrive. Picture the kids roasting marshmallows and eating s’mores as adults converse over a glass of wine or an evening cocktail, all while admiring the fall colors as one gazes at the spectacular views across the Caddo Lake landscape.

It’s not until you stay at a place like the First Cast Cabin, and get on the water, do you begin to grasp that this is a distinct and separate world—a labyrinth of sloughs and shallow submerged islands dense with bald cypress, their branches shrouded in long, dangling strands of moss, their wide, fluted trunks mirrored in the surface of the water. Tiffany Theriot has brought cutting-edge technology and superior standards of European med spas to the Shreveport area with the opening of Bleu Med Spa & Laser Clinic. A truly organic and full-luxury medical spa, Bleu separates itself from others by offering only products that adhere to strict European standards. Explains Tiffany, “European regulation is extremely rigorous, and we exceed even their criteria by offering biodynamic skincare which is higher-grade than organic to ensure natural and immediate results.” Tiffany is most excited about Fibroblast non-surgical skin tightening. “Fibroblast is new in North America but has proven extremely successful and popular across Europe over the last several years. We’re the only seasoned business offering these services in Louisiana and one of only four in state, so clients in the know across the USA seek us out and come from all over.” Tiffany explains that Fibroblast Skin Tightening is “soft surgery” meaning it delivers results similar to surgery but with minimal downtime and no scalpel, stitches or bandages. “The results are immediate and permanent. It can take the place of Botox and fillers for some, there is no anesthesia, and it’s much lower-risk and more affordable than actual surgery. Our clients absolutely love it and have immediate and permanent results.” The procedure eliminates excess skin using a hand-held device that creates a tiny arc. When the arc touches the skin, it causes sublimation, eliminating excess skin and leaving the surrounding area untouched. A tiny carbon dot is left behind which sheds in about four to seven days. As healing activates collagen production, skin becomes firm and tight. More than one treatment can be done for better results, but Tiffany says it’s uncommon to require more than one to two treatments in the same area. Along with treating the face, Bleu’s certified and licensed practitioners can perform breast lifts and tummy makeovers and even tighten knees and biceps.

they love it so much. There are some contraindications and we’re candid about that on our website. We want our clients to be educated and have the best possible experience at a great value.”

Although any body area can be treated, Tiffany says that treating the face is most popular. “The thinnest skin is around the eyes, so treating those areas gives the most impactful results. Under the eye usually requires only one treatment and can help someone look 10 to 15 years younger. People see the results and often cry because SBMAG.NET

For example, people with Alzheimer’s (and all other dementia) may forget to wash their hands or take other recommended precautions to prevent illness.

BY ADAM BAILEY

N

ovember has been designated as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Its aim is to bring attention to the disease, educate communities about its effects and provide support to those individuals and families struggling with this condition during COVID-19. And while the coronavirus threatens the health of millions, it does present unique challenges for millions of Americans living with Alzheimer’s, who are often the most frail and vulnerable. ***** Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s during the coronavirus brings about challenges. COVID-19, and the systematic closures it has caused, have had disproportionate and dangerous effects throughout the Alzheimer’s community. Given the social distancing measures put in place, the impacts are widespread and significant. Most likely, Alzheimer’s disease does not increase risk for COVID-19. However, Alzheimer’s-related behaviors, increased age and the common health conditions that accompany the disease may increase risk.

ER’S VID-19

While there is no perfect solution, the coronavirus is forcing everyone into uncharted territory. Visitor bans in nursing homes and other facilities make assessing the health of a family member much harder, making people living with Alzheimer’s feeling more anxious and lonely. Caregivers—as a whole—are seeing more agitation, suspicions and marked declines in their loved one’s overall health. In the spirit of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, here are 6 simple tips to help navigate the complex and quickly changing environment when it comes to helping care for someone with Alzheimer’s during COVID-19. 1. EXPLAIN THE PANDEMIC IN RELATABLE TERMS Depending on where your loved one is in the course of the disease, try talking to them about the pandemic in a way they can understand. Don’t over explain if they are not able to grasp it. Say something like, “We have to stay inside because that’s most safe for us, but we’ll do it together. I’ll be with you and we’ll be okay.” Remember, memories fade in reverse with Alzheimer’s, so a person with moderate dementia may still remember their youth clearly. Drawing on early memories to contextualize the present may help to explain the pandemic. World War II brought rationing, shortages, and doing without. It was a time of national unity and shared purpose. True, today is not exactly like it was then, but there are parallels. If you were born in the 30s, you still remember what it was like in World War II from your childhood or from your parents talking about it. Appealing to those memories may be one way to frame the current crisis in a way the person can understand. No matter what, only you will know your loved one’s emotional and cognitive state. Try to stay calm and reassuring. 2. FOCUS ON SAFE HYGIENE Because those with Alzheimer’s may forget to wash their hands, experts encourage caregivers to be extra vigilant in helping individuals practice safe hygiene. Try setting up a schedule to do hand washing on a regular basis or having signs in the bathroom or by the kitchen sink to remind them to wash their hands for 20 seconds. Repetition can help encourage behavior changes in those with moderate dementia. Physical demonstration of the behavior can also be helpful where you guide the person by modeling good hygiene yourself. However, if your loved one isn’t leaving the home and isn’t exposed to other people, consider their risk. You don’t want to cause them unnecessary stress because they’re not capable of learning and remembering. Do the best you can, given the situation. 3. ities shut down, and health services become less available due to public health containment strategies for COVID-19, families should anticipate that less help and support may be available for their loved one. In the event a facility does close, or if a caregiver tests positive for the coronavirus, think about who will step in to help care for your loved one.

office. Most offices are postponing nonessential appointments and scheduling telehealth sessions when possible.

This is critical for family caregivers to think about now before there is a problem. If you do have to make a different decision about who is providing care, it’s really hard to do that in the middle of a crisis. Do not be afraid to reach out to family, friends, and neighbors to assess the potential support you have. Avoid judging yourself by the standards you held as a caregiver a few months ago.

Try identifying one staff member at the facility that you have a relationship with and asking them to be your point of contact. Attempt to get that employee’s cell number and communicate directly via text/video calls with them to see your loved one and book the next appointment before you get off the phone with them so you don’t have to call to schedule each time.

If you’re forced to bring a loved one home from a facility, remember that there are life care professionals that can help with the transition, such as durable medical supply companies and home health companies that can best explain the regulations of these industries. To find home agencies and companies in your area, visit the Alzheimer’s Association Community Resource Finder at www.communityresourcefinder.org/. You can also call the association’s free 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900. When it comes to managing regular doctor’s appointments, try contacting the doctor’s office and discussing the risks of having to transport your loved one to their

4. ASK ABOUT COMMUNICATION POLICIES In order to protect the health of their residents, many facilities are restricting access to outside visitors. Before visiting, call and ask how best to coordinate calls with your loved one.

Seniors living in assisted-care and nursing homes have loss of critical social activities such as off-site trips, game nights, communal dining, and fitness classes. Confined to their rooms or apartments, these seniors are left with little to no social contact at all. 5. BRING TECHNOLOGY INTO THEIR LIFE Technology can easily offer several ways for the isolated to still stay connected with the outside world. Purchasing a tablet or smartphone for your loved one and loading it with contact information for family members and friends, photos, social media sites, and games is a great way to keep them connected. Make any facility staff aware of how easy you have made it for them to help your loved

one engage without their constant assistance. They may just need help to turn it on. You can also try creative ways to engage your loved one with technology based on their cognitive abilities. Try video chatting with friends and family. Host a virtual dinner, commemorate someone’s birthday, graduation, or anniversary. Challenge them to an online game like Words with Friends, Monopoly or Mahjong. Challenge them on Instagram to create a story of the average day. Rather than watching the news, try to get them to watch something more positive by streaming a show simultaneously so you can watch it together with them. 6. PRACTICE YOUR OWN SELF-CARE Because many people are feeling anxious, it’s important for caregivers to practice self-care. Unfortunately, no one knows how long this pandemic is going to go on or what’s going to happen. Be aware of your own anxiety and stress level. Alzheimer’s patients can easily pick up on this, especially if they can’t really understand the context of what’s going on. The Alzheimer’s Association suggests the following ways to reduce anxiety about the pandemic:

Pay attention to your own level of stress.

Stay present by engaging in activities in your home with the person you’re caring for, such as folding clothes or cooking.

Stay off social media if it makes you anxious.

Keep news to a minimum.

Caring for yourself now is actually caring for your loved one with Alzheimer’s in the long-term because you want to be in a good place emotionally and physically when you can reinitiate your full care responsibilities. ***** Unfortunately, our current pandemic crisis will leave its shadow over our society and economy for a long time. Everyone, from caregivers, patients, family members and medical personnel have a duty to protect the most vulnerable among us, a group that includes older adults with cognitive impairment. Preventing infection must be paramount in our minds, particularly for those at greater risk. Alzheimer’s is at the forefront of biomedical research. Researchers are working to uncover as many aspects of Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias, as fast as possible. Some of the most remarkable progress has shed light on how Alzheimer’s affects the brain. Many potential approaches are currently under investigation worldwide. The hope is this better understanding will lead to new treatments—well beyond COVID-19.

During such unprecedented times, we have to find medical solutions that are safe and effective for our loved ones. In order to protect some of our most vulnerable, eMD has come out with a telehealth mobile app that connects the patient to a live doctor, at all times, in any state. During covid, doctor’s offices and hospitals can be frightening. Our older generations that may be starting to experience neurological effects of Alzheimer’s may not need to go into those environments. The fear of leaving comfortable surroundings and environments may be detrimental rather than helpful. The number of people allowed in doctor’s offices and rooms can make attending your loved one’s appointments difficult. eMD can help!

I

t’s the holiday season and all through the land COVID-19 was there to ruin our plans. This unprecedented year has flown by and sweater weather is upon us. We all know that during the fall and winter months families and friends from all over come together to make memories, give thanks, and give gifts while eating to their hearts content. Unfortunately, society is still plagued by the Coronavirus pandemic which means that the holidays just might look and feel a little out of the ordinary. With all the safety guidelines and restrictions associated with the new normal of 2020, loved ones are going to have to find new ways to come together and celebrate the holidays this year. For some, the changes to this familiar time can be quite upsetting because of the traditions that they hold dear. Though change may be inevitable, that does not mean that change must be a bad thing. This year has been all about finding light in the darkness and making the best of unfavorable situations. Since the beginning of this pandemic, we have all successfully found ways to

rebuild our everyday lives. This holiday season, people all over the world will be revamping old traditions and even creating new ones so that we can all be together even if we are not all in the same room. The last time the holiday season was impacted by a pandemic was during the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. From 1914 to 1918, the holiday season had taken a slight hit because of World War I, but citizens were becoming more hopeful as the war began to come to an end. That all changed when the Spanish Flu reared its ugly head. Unlike COVID-19, the Spanish Flu targeted young, healthy individuals at an alarming rate as opposed to individuals with preexisting conditions and weak immune systems. The Health Department issued social distancing and quarantine orders, businesses and churches began shutting down, and citizens were instructed to wear masks just like during the COVID chaos of 2020. Nevertheless, that did not stop thousands of healthy young men and women from contracting the deadly virus. People usual-

ly looked forward to the bit of magic in the air during the holidays, but the magic just was not anywhere to be found in 1918. As time passed, ministers and other community leaders began to petition for churches to reopen to give people a sense of hope for the future. Right before Christmas, officials gave the greenlight for churches to reopen after noticing that flu cases in many areas were beginning to fall. Safety guidelines were arranged, and parishioners were welcomed back into their houses of worship with opened arms. The opening of the church doors just in time for Christmas brought a sense of normalcy and optimism to communities when both were scarce. The magic was back, and it encouraged people to make the best of it. The few shops that were open saw eager customers buying gifts while other families opted to happily exchange homemade gifts. The pandemic of 1918 taught us that even if our society is riddled with sickness, we should make lemonade out of those lemons and keep pushing. No one ever expected that in 2020 we would be spending the holidays wearing protective face masks and talking to every cashier in the world through Plexiglas, but here we are living the Coronavirus life. The question many people have on their minds is how to rearrange their beloved time of year so that everyone can still be together while remaining safe. Though the way we gather might change, the feeling of togetherness does not have to be lost in the shuffle. It is important for families and communities to keep some sense of regularity and positivity as we power through this journey. There is nothing wrong with making meaningful memories this season, but it does matter how you intend to celebrate. Planning dinners and fun activities where the guest list consists of the people in your household or those you have regular contact with is not so bad. The risk begins to increase when you start adding in loved ones from other parts of the country and the world. The risk continues to rise when individuals are not practicing the proper safety standards issued by the

CDC. It does not help matters in any way that there are some who would rather not wash their hands, wear their masks, or practice social distancing. Carelessness like this are reasons why this pandemic has been prolonged like it has. Even months after the beginning of the pandemic, there are still some areas that are battling COVID harder than others and it is mainly because some people feel they are above CDC regulations.

THE FISH STILL FEAR HIM As Chuck Patterson was motoring across the lake in 2013, his boat suddenly hit a submerged sandbar that threw him across the bow. Unfortunately, the boat continued traveling up and over him breaking two vertebrae and mangling his left foot in the process. Somehow he managed to crawl back to his boat where he found his cell phone and was able to call 911. Fortunately, Chuck eventually made a full recovery and despite having his foot amputated several inches above his ankle, the Korean War Veteran has returned to fishing thanks to the prosthesis he now wears. “It takes a little while to go through the process of getting a prosthesis, so I got to know the staff at Snell’s pretty well—they became like family to me,” said Chuck. “Those folks are so honest and forthright. You can’t help but like them.” When the weather is good, you can still find Chuck frightening the fish out on Cross Lake most Thursday and Friday mornings.

We all know the best way to beat this virus is by practicing social distancing and following other CDC safety guidelines. Since the holiday season arrives during colder times, it is likely that most dinners and events will be held indoors. It is imperative to make sure that there is plenty of ventilation and open spaces if an indoor event is the route that will be taken. Poor ventilation and too many individuals in small spaces for extended periods of time are breeding grounds for COVID. Ensure that your guests have plenty of room to practice social distancing. No one wants to feel isolated or mushed together so it is best to either have a

logically sized guest list or suitable event space. If you do have the option, it would be best to plan for an outdoor gathering. Outdoor activities allow plenty of fresh air and space to comfortably move about. Another way to make sure that everyone is on the same safety page before arriving is by developing a safety plan and notifying guests of your plans beforehand. Enforce a mask and handwashing policy for all attendees as well as make guests aware of anyone who has been exposed to the virus. When it comes to your health and the health of loved ones, it is necessary to be firm with the safety ground rules that are set in place. Also, never let anyone make you feel bad about the precautions that you choose to take during these times. If staying safe means masking up or staying home all together then so be it. It is better to be cautious than to be a cautionary tale.

Coronavirus has completely changed our lives, but that does not mean that it must define our lives. Adversity is merely a chance for us to grow stronger and be thankful even when things are not their best. The only thing that is consistent is change which means circumstances will eventually change for our society as well. As of now, there is no exact time frame as to when COVID-19 will be confidently contained or eradicated, but we do know that day will come. Citizens should continue to follow all safety guidelines so that we have a better shot at the world getting back to normal at a faster pace. This time next year, we would all love to be cuddled under blankets with loved ones without the worry of Coronavirus or anything detrimental such as that. That dream can be a reality sooner than later if we all follow the necessary safety precautions regardless of how fond we may or may not be of them. In the meantime, we should all remain as innovative and as positive as possible until this COVID battle is won.

Coronavirus has completely changed our lives, but that does not mean that it must define our lives.

It can be difficult to think of ways to come together for the holidays during a pandemic when the whole point of the holidays is to be close with the ones you love. Sharing meals and doing other activities can still take place despite COVID-19 and it is all thanks to technology. With platforms such as Zoom, Skype, and Google Duo, individuals can connect with one another in real time without being in the same city or country. The family game nights and other traditions can still proceed. If everyone’s internet connection is working decently, there’s no reason why there can’t be a Zoom date for the family to duke it out in Pictionary or participate in a movie night where everyone starts Polar Express at the same time. As far as sharing meals together, the same concept of using technology can be used. All of us might not be able to be under the same roof, but that cannot stop loved ones from continuing to feast as one. Recipes can be shared with everyone ahead of time via email or word of mouth. That way when everyone sits down for the scheduled video chat, they will all be eating the same meal. No one ever said that a pandemic had to stop anyone from enjoying Grandma’s green bean casserole or your favorite aunt’s legendary strawberry pie while conversing with family and friends. If the recipes are followed, and everyone is connected there is nothing stopping that familiar magic from swirling through the air. Even if a dish does not turn out quite the same, that is just an opportunity for another memory to be made. Who does not love a good “Remember last year when…” story where everyone can laugh until their cheeks hurt?

Investment Lessons from 2020

A

s the year draws to a close, it’s fair to say that we’ve all learned something about the social, political, physical and environmental forces that have affected everyone. And, in some ways, our lives will be changed, perhaps permanently. But as an investor, what lessons can you learn from 2020? Here are some to consider: •

78

THE MARKETS LOOK AHEAD. Here’s something many investors discovered in 2020: Investment prices don’t always move in the same direction as the overall economy. This might not have seemed apparent right after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in mid-February, as NOVEMBER 2020

| SBMAG.NET

the overall economy and the stock market took big hits. But just about five weeks later, the markets began a rally that lasted several months. During this time, the economy also recovered somewhat, but still remains on weak footing. What can explain this discrepancy between the markets and economic activity? Essentially, economic numbers, such as the unemployment rate and gross domestic product (GDP), reflect what’s happening today, but the markets are always looking toward tomorrow, which means they are anticipating a stronger economic recovery and the results that come with it, such as greater corporate earnings in 2021. No one can say for sure what the future holds, but you can usually know the market’s opinion by its performance. For example, in the current environment, when many people have been forced to work and shop from home, and get their entertainment online, it’s probably not surprising that some parts of the technology sector have seen their economic activity grow, along with their stock prices. Here’s the key point: Investment opportunities always exist, especially in times of market stress – and smart investors will find them and incorporate them into their portfolios in a way that’s appropriate for their goals and risk tolerance. •

PATIENCE AND DISCIPLINE CAN PAY dividends. As mentioned above, the stock market dropped sharply in the weeks immediately following the pandemic, but then gained steadily for months afterward. Investors who tried to “cut losses” and exited the market likely did so at the wrong time and missed out on the beginning of the upturn. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon – investors who overreact to market declines often find themselves on the investment sidelines just when a new rally begins. Rather than being reactive in this way, you may be better off sticking with a long-term investment strategy, and buying and selling investments only when it makes sense for your situation, such as when you need to diversify your portfolio. For many reasons, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything exactly like 2020 again. But some of the investment lessons we learned are applicable in every year – so keep them in mind for 2021 and beyond.

“Travel has always carried risks,” Elton pointed out, “everything from kidnapping to disease. And, it always will. Where we, as travel advisors, can help is to identify those risks for you and help you plan a vacation within your comfort zone.” “Yes,” Carol added. “Coronavirus is real. The risk of contracting it is real. We have to consider that risk when recommending a vacation destination and activities. But, the entire travel industry working through the World Travel and Tourism Council, and this resort in particular, has implemented enhanced sanitation protocols to guard against coronavirus exposure. We can’t completely eliminate the risk, but these enhanced protocols and practices reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19 and other illnesses as well.” Pointing out a green circle on the brochure, Elton said, “You can tell which destinations have adopted these protocols by looking for the WTTC’s Safe Travels Logo.” “Really?” Ryan queried, staring at the logo. “So, that’s kinda like the old ‘Good Housekeeping’ seal of approval?”

SB PETS | by hailey lawson

PET TRAVEL TiPS It seems we’re all venturing out a bit more now since the wake of the Covid 19 Pandemic, and with holidays approaching, a lot of people are preparing to travel to visit their families. As the world starts drifting back to normal, we will all try to get back to our usual holiday routines, which includes traveling for a lot of families. To help, SB Magazine would like to deliver some Do's and Don'ts for traveling this holiday season with your favorite companion! For you and your pet, traveling can be a very stressful excursion. Regardless of the type of travel, if you’re plan-

ning that holiday trip with your pet, we have some travel safety tips to help ensure a safe and comfortable journey for everyone. When making travel decisions, choose what is safest and most comfortable for your pet. Consider this, unless you're able to spend a lot of time with your dog, they'll probably be happier staying home. Also, cats are almost always better off in their own home. However, if you have decided to bring your pet along, follow these steps to ensure your pet’s safety. It’s time for a quick check-up! Make sure your pet is upto-date with their vaccinations, flea, tick, and heartworm treatments. Be sure to talk to the vet about your travel plans and ask for a health certificate if necessary. Some states require vaccination records at certain interstate

crossings, and airlines typically require a health certificate to be issued 7-10 days before travel. Most importantly, have your pet microchipped. In addition to a collar and tag, a microchip provides an important safeguard to help locate your pet if they get lost. Traveling by car involves more than just loading your pet in the back seat and taking off. Be sure to prepare your pet for a long trip. Take them on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. A well-ventilated crate or carrier is best and most comfortable for your pet. The crate should be large enough to allow your pet to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around. Make sure the crate is secure so it will not slide or tumble over. Pack a pet travel kit. Bring food and water, bowls, leash, plastic waste bags, and medications. Always pack plenty of water; drinking water from an area your pet isn’t used to could result in a tummy ache. Be sure to pack your pet’s favorite toy and never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. Air travel is best to avoid when traveling with a companion unless your pet is small enough to ride in the cabin with you. However, if you must travel by air, always choose a direct flight over multiple stops. This will help reduce travel-related stress for both of you and will decrease the chances that your pet is left on a tarmac somewhere. Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate. Place some type of bedding in the crate to absorb accidents. Do not lock the crate so that that airline personnel can open it in case of an emergency. Mark the crate with proper identification and a photo of your pet. Label the crate with the words “Live Animal,” as well as your name, mobile phone, and destination phone number. To reduce the chance of air sickness, do not feed your pet for at least four hours prior to boarding your flight. Do not tranquilize your pet. Tranquilizers can lead to in-flight emergencies. Remember, no matter where you and your pet are going for the holidays or how you plan to get there, make sure

your pet is safe and comfortable. Your holiday getaway will be much more enjoyable when your pet can enjoy themselves too. Safe travels and happy holidays to you and your companion!
