While there may be no magic cure in sight yet, there are some positive steps we can take not just for ourselves, but also for our community. International travel and quarantine are not needed for a dose of the Hawaiian culture of Aloha. Practicing Aloha goes beyond saying “hello and goodbye”, it is a way of expressing all the good things between us including compassion, kindness, grace, and love that may become too easily forgott en right now as our self-survival instinct kicks in. On a practical and local level, instead of clearing supermarket shelves a shopping trip to a local farmers market will boost your immune system along with the local economy. Byron Farmers Markets runs on Thursdays 7 am to 11 am, Mullum Farmers Market runs on Fridays from 7 am to 11 am, Bangalow Farmers Market runs on Saturdays from 7 am to 11 am and New Brighton Farmers Market runs from 8 am to 11 am. Fresh, and local is best. Now if you recently dreamt of playing the fl ute then Thursday is your lucky night as you can learn to toot one at the Ancient Flute Worksop at The Timber Slab Factory on Coolamon Scenic Drive. It’s a 6:30 pm start. With the fl ute range including Indian, Arabic and Chinese variations you’ll soon be playing a cultural melody before you enjoy a sound relaxation massage with 3 didge players, singing bowls and a sound therapist. The suggested donation is $20. Changing musical direction, it is time to amp it at La Latin Party at Woody’s for the hott est D-Floor on Thursdays from 10 pm. With rhythms spinning from the DJ booth it’s time to get down and learn some hip-shakin' moves thanks to the Latino grooves. Come Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm why not head to the Lone Goat Gallery for the opening night of Hannah Cutt s: Buoys will be Buoys exhibition. With pieces on display created using found objects such as vintage linoleum, fi shing fl oats, surfb oard fi ns and more it promises to be something for our eyes and minds to explore. On Saturday you can get outside to help Mother Nature out at the Main Beach Clean-up from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. The good roosters at Positive Change for Marine Life will meet you at Apex Park to help you get started. Also on Saturday, but at Clarkes Beach, it's the Disabled Surfers Byron Bay Hands-On Day. This is a chance to volunteer yourself to help disabled people get out for a surfi ng experience. Volunteers can register at Main Beach at 9 am, and you'll get to enjoy a free BBQ lunch too. Music fans should head to The Northern on Saturday night for a night of psych and surf rock with Pasifl orez. The guys met in Byron and have just released an 8-track album. If mushies are on your radar following the rains then the Fungal Wizardry 101 Workshop is the most fungi fun you can have without gett ing trippy.
