Byron Region Community College acknowledges and recognises the Bundjalung Nation, the traditional custodians from where we are based. We pay our respects to all of our region’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and towards our shared future.
G re e tings, Welcome to our new Term 2 program. It’s been wonderful to welcome all the new students undertaking one of our nationally recognised courses. Look out for some of our student stories in this edition and how adult education has changed their lives. It’s also been fantastic to witness so many of our general courses filling up and booking up so fast, testament to our community’s desire to upskill, learn something new and meet new people. Look out this term for new courses such as Welding for Women, A Modern Approach to Grief Care, Fashion Design Illustration and Sushi For Beginners to name a few.
We also farewelled Jud King this term as she relocates to Coffs Harbour. Jud has been a tutor at the College for 11 years and been instrumental in teaching and mentoring so many of the early childhood workers in our community. Please take time to peruse this term’s program and hopefully find a course that ignites something new and exciting for you. Testament to that is this month’s cover artwork from one Visual Arts student. It’s never too late to learn. We look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

Student: Certificate III in Individual Support
I understand if me doing this course seems totally out of left field. After all, I’ve owned the tyre shop in Mullumbimby for 35 years. I enrolled because I want to make a difference in the world. I’m a caring person and I’ve always got along better with the older generation than my own. I always wanted to be a nurse but feel I’ve left it too late for university study. I have friends who work in the aged care sector and they’ve been encouraging me (ok, harping at me) for years. The thought of studying scared the crap out of me. Since I left school at 16, I’ve only ever done a few one-day courses. The idea of a sit-down classroom environment was very daunting. I’d just missed a cut-off date but enrolling a year ahead was good as it gave me time to organise my life to make it happen. I rearranged my business but still ended up going into work before classes and during lunchtimes.
NATIONALLY RECOGNISED TRAINING
I scoured the country looking at courses when someone suggested I check out the Byron Community College. I was gobsmacked to find exactly what I was looking for 100 meters down the road! I went in to chat and within moments just said “Shut up and take my money!”

It’s not an easy time to be thinking about working in the aged care sector, you hear horror stories of what’s happening. One of the tutors ‘sugar-coated’ the problems in the industry in order to give us hope that things could be different and another tutor gave us insight into the harsh realities. I figure if I can go in and make ‘old Mary’ happy, that’s job done. Society has given me so much, it’s time to give back to society. The college was fantastic and the teachers were brilliant. There was gentle tutelage all the way though, guidance, support and backup. The unexpected highlight of the course was the camaraderie that developed within the group. I planned to sit in the back corner and just do my work but, by the end of day one we were on a first name basis and going out for coffee. It was so good to bounce ideas off each other. At the start, I only wanted to focus on aged care but I am so glad I was talked into the disability subjects also – it opened my eyes as well as job opportunities. Since finishing the course, I worked in aged care part time for a couple of months but my business took over again. Now, I’m working part time for a local disability care organisation and am in the process of selling my business to my daughter. I think everyone should participate in adult education. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but the college has opened my eyes and changed my mind on that.

Sourdough has long been supporting growing businesses in our region and we’re excited to do what we can to support all the existing and new organisations and groups, and entrepreneurs and startups - essentially our local and growing ecosystem - to be able to better connect for everyone’s benefit” says Sourdough’s Expert in Residence, Ashleigh Camm. The expansion of the SNR initiatives have been formed in consultation with an advisory board consisting of representatives from NSW Business Chamber, Byron Chamber of Commerce, Byron Ventures, Byron Bay Angels, The Community Well and local startup entrepreneurs and advisors.

Student: Certificate IV Community Services
I felt like a bit of a sham doing a Certificate IV as I already have a degree in social work. I’ve previously worked in child protection and domestic violence in Brisbane and in homeless shelters overseas. But, after over a decade of working with my partner making social justice documentaries and raising our son, I had no recent experience and wasn’t even getting to interview stage of job applications. I was feeling insecure about my abilities so felt like I needed a refresher and a way to develop contacts in this region. I was quite strategic when I started the course. After becoming disillusioned with statutory government organisations, I knew I wanted to work in a community organisation, like the Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre. The course was daunting at first. It involved a lot of group work, presentation and role playing – things that are not my natural strengths. At times I’d feel apprehensive, yet I liked the challenge and learned to step up. The formal learning was good but it was what happened in the spaces that I found exciting. We were such a diverse group of people but it was a small group and we developed real trust and respect. Not that it was all smooth – people held different opinions and there were moments of tension. I admire the skills of our tutor, who managed all of this so well. My work placement was at the Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre – exactly where I had hoped for. Forty hours isn’t long but I did further hours on a voluntary basis and now, a couple of months after finishing the course, I work there on a casual basis and hope something more substantial comes up. I also work as a receptionist at Mullumbimby Psychology. The course was such a great experience for me. It offered me the chance to say to myself: “I can do this.”
