01.

I was always the shortest girl in my classes. I aways loved art and music without any ideas of finance. I was always good at painting during my childhood, especially on the faces of my family members and on the walls of our home. Therefore I took art classes in junior and senior high school, and majored in visual communication of design and minored in graphic communication arts when I was in college. I moved from Taiwan to San Francisco two years ago to continue my education at the Academy of Art University to pursue my dream of becoming a successful designer — a path to success that has always felt truth to me.

Before I came to the USA, I had some part-time jobs. I took on a month-long position with Design Popular Imagination (DPI) magazine as an executive art design assistant. A year later, having just graduated, I worked briefly as an artist for Common Wealth Magazine, a well-known and respected business magazine in Taiwan, designing interfaces for iPad e-books. I was also an art teacher teaching 3-5 year-old children at the same time. On my leisure time, I like shopping, origami, playing piano, drawing, and hanging out with friends. Also, I like wasting my time on beautiful things such as writing diaries with a cup of milk tea, and cleaning my room until there’s no dust anywhere. Living in a foreign city far away from my hometown has allowed me to have a chance to absorb the new cultural elements around me and integrate them into my design. The knowledge I have learned from AAU gave me a sense of accomplishment in my designs. In the future, I hope to focus not only on learning about aesthetics but also improving my technical skills. I am looking forward to do my best with my thesis project with all my passion.

105 My Roomie Book

I am a Taiwanese girl with a male’s Mandarin name, ShuoChun Chueh. It means large, big and decent. I got this name because when I was born, my parents took me to a fortuneteller who said that I will become a tough businesswoman. The fortuneteller gave me a masculine name to ensure that I can be successful in the future. However, I grew up into a different person as what the fortuneteller predicted.

Autobiography

I have a long experience living with roommates. I’ve slept in a bunk bed with my older sister when I was a child, moved into a college dorm with three other classmates, and even made bed on the floor in a classroom of an elementary school with 15 people when I was a volunteer in Iceland. Now, I live in an apartment with my two other sweet roomies in San Francisco. I have wonderful memories about living with people. Roommates provide us companionship, togetherness, convenience and a lot of fun. However, living with people is not only about sharing bills and happy time together, but also sharing house works and spaces. I realized that when people live together with different

backgrounds and habits. It has a chance to have conflicts and arguments. It will be great if there’s a communication channel between roommates and housemates to prevent the awkward situations. By working on my thesis project, I would have the chance of using my professional ability to bring the solution of home issues between roommates. By having My Roomie Book as my thesis project also give me the chance to learn how to develop a native iOS app. I can learn usability, interface design and programming knowledge from proveeding this project to become an UX/UI designer in my future career.

Statement of Interest

Statement of Interest

Users can plan a housework schedules, rule agreements, and even set up a reward system. When users claim to do house works, he/she can set up alarms to remind himself to do the chores. After finishing the work, users will get reward points to keep their motivation of doing the housework. After the users have accumulated the reward points to a certain amount, they can use the reward points to redeem rewards.

Reward such as waving money from a grocery bill or private living room space usage, can be set up by roommates together. Users can also see the statistics of the reward points of each roommate every month. This keeps the users’ motivated to use this application, and create a peaceful, organized living space. The target audience of this app would be young people. – Probably 17-28 years old- who live in a city with someone else. They might be students and might also work part time or lowmedium income jobs. By proceeding this project, I can learn the knowledge of developing a real-world app and understand the procedure of making UX, UI design from the beginning to the end. It will give me a precious experience before I join to the real design firm.

107 My Roomie Book

My Roomie Book is a native iOS app that can be used between roommates to solve home issues. There are many things would cause conflicts in a home, not only about rent and bills, but also household chores, noise, personal privacy and the use of public space. This app provides an effective communication channel to avoid awkward conversations.

Due Date Settings

The other apps that can help users arranging house chores are mostly build for parents and children. These apps, such as Chore Monster and Chore Pad, use the rewarding and claiming systems that can only be edited by parents.

The innovation of my thesis project will lies on providing complete features to help people live in an organized and peace environment with their roommates. Users can plan housework schedules and set up the house rule agreements together. Instead of developing the app for Parents and Children, users can have an efficient communication channel to talk with their roommates or housemates.

Unique Positioning Statement

Most of the apps that build for roommates are focus on calculating rent and bills. For example, the roommat.es and Zenrow apps. Even though these apps also provide features to help users arranging their housework. I found there are some problems occurred when I tried to use these apps in real life. Problems such as the app don’t show who did the chores or the shopping list cannot be edited.
