MASTERCLASS The finishing touches are just as important as the card shape. Use them to their full potential to really show off your project.
Have you ever looked at a card you’ve made and thought it had something missing that would bring the whole design together and complement each element of the design individually? Adding that finishing touch to your card can do just that, whether it’s glitter, liquid pearls, bows, anything you like. Today, I will be discussing the different ways you can add those finishing touches to your cards. Flat-back and liquid pearls are an elegant, yet subtle way of rounding off the design of your card. They both come in a variety of colours for you to be able to mix and match with the rest of your project. Pearls can be added in any location, in any amount you wish and can be a great edition to your design. That’s the joy of crafting. It’s all up to you! You can also pick out any flowers you have on your projects by placing a pearl in the centre of the flower, or even add a flat-back pearl onto a bow. If you’re wanting to add that bit of sparkle to your card, glitter is a fantastic way to complement your card’s design. Pick out key pieces of your decoupage or a specific layer on your project. Glitter glue is best for those delicate touches, and for an overall shimmer, sprinkling glitter onto wet glue applied to your project works best.
22
www.tatteredlace.co.uk
Bows are a fabulous and uniquely versatile accompaniment to any design. Though the recognised material used for a bow is ribbon, string, lace or even elastic can be made into a bow, freehand or using a Bow Maker. Bows can be added to decoupage, onto a sentiment mat, onto the background mats, or even onto card bases to act as a stopper for easel cards.
Gems can add an air of sophistication, but also that touch of sparkle to your designs. They can be positioned in the same way as liquid and flatback pearls to add that shimmering finishing touch to your project. Gems come in a variety of colours and shapes to be able to really personalise the project you’re creating. As an alternative to using SVG flowers from your stash files to decoupage on your card, paper flowers can add a little more depth and realism to your project and also add that little bit of texture to your design if you decide not to build up your card too much with lots of mat layers.
These are just a few tips to give your project that extra special finishing touch. Have a play around and customise your card in whatever way you wish. There’s no end to what you can create!

MATTING & LAYERING WITH
Hello Tattered Lace readers!
So, you’ve got the digital magazine and have made all the projects included, now what? While you wait for your next sensational issue to come out, why not make the most of the stash files that are included along with everything else in the magazine?
It’s a great way to gain inspiration for your projects and makes the most of the extra little bits you get with the magazine. From card shapes, to mat layers, to detailed cuts. There’s a whole host of things you can do with your stash files.
One of the most important things when making a card is the card blank. There are multiple different versions of card included in the stash files including square easels, unique shaped easels, square cards, rectangle cards, over edge cards and a few more, depending on what projects have been used in the specific issue of the magazine. Utilise these to your full potential, cut and go. Even if you don’t use the rest of the files for that particular project, you have the starting point of your own project.
38
www.tatteredlace.co.uk
Next is mat layers. There are a number of different shaped mat layers which you can mix and match with different card shapes to create a whole host of interesting designs. Why not try adding some circles, or a label shape to your square cards to add that little bit of intrigue into your design. You can even alter the sizes of your mat layers to build up the card in as many layers as you wish. The other fantastic thing about them is that the file is just an outline, leaving you the choice of cutting the file in any colour cardstock you have in your physical stash.
As with mat layers and card blanks, there are also ‘mat files’ for the dies that have inspired the detailed designs. You can create different silhouettes for your detailed designs and cards by simply changing the colour of cardstock you cut it from. You could even use a sheet of backing paper or patterned paper to really add something different to your card.
A lot of the files are designed around physical dies with added decoupage files. If you wanted, you could still use the Charisma sheets to cut the colourful die designs to build up decoupage on your card. Or you could cut the file onto a plain piece of card, not necessarily white, and colour the design yourself with paints or markers. If you didn’t want to cut the shape, you can replace the blade with a fineliner and draw the design onto any cardstock you wish, incorporating a different feel to the design on your card.
There is so much you can do with the stash files to expand your creativity. Combine files from different projects to make your own unique design or create the same card in different colours. As always, the joy of crafting is creating your own projects.

COLOURTheory with Nancy Watt
One of the first things that we notice on a card is the colours. Making sure the shades and tones used in your designs are balanced is one of the first steps and can help when creating your projects to really make the most out of the materials you are using. Today, I want to talk about a few ways in which you can balance your colours to get the most out of them using lights and darks, but also theming around feminine and masculine colours.
Light and dark colours and shades go hand-inhand with any aspect of design, though you don’t want an overabundance of light or dark shades, that could potentially overpower the whole design. Mixing light and dark tones of any colour brings depth and definition to your card.
If you place dark on dark, or light on light, whether it’s a mat layer or Charisma, you will lose the definition of the topmost layer. For example, putting a light mat behind a darker Charisma, or vice versa, can help you pick out certain aspects of the design, and make the piece a stunning focal point on your project.
52
www.tatteredlace.co.uk
Colours can bring each element of the card together into one gorgeous project. Choosing the right shades and tones is the first step.
Traditionally, pinks, yellows and oranges are widely considered to be feminine colours and blues, greens and browns are traditionally masculine colours. As with any colour, not just the traditional feminine and masculine colour palettes, you want to ensure you have the balance of lights and darks. For example, a typically masculine theme uses browns and blues, towards the darker end of the scale but you want to make sure that you have some lighter blues and browns in there, so it doesn’t look too grungy. In the same aspect, you want to make sure you have some darker pinks or oranges in your feminine themed cards, so it doesn’t look too bright and overpower the aspects of your design that you want to draw the eye to.
Of course, you don’t have to stick with tradition when it comes to the card recipient. You could send a pink and floral card to a man in your life, or a grungy, car or train themed card to a special female friend. Sticking to convention stifles creativity and the chance to truly make your card as personal as it can be for the person you are gifting it to.
As with many things in crafting, your projects are entirely yours to design and make. To really elevate your projects to the best they can be, try out different shades of the colours you have chosen before you commit to matting anything together. Lay out the card as it would be made and mix and match different shades and tones until you are happy with your design. Changing your mind is a good thing and seeing how different colours go together can influence any future projects you may wish to make.
