It has been quite a year for Cabinet Maker with the launch of a number of content initiatives, most notably our regular monthly sections. The January Furniture Show saw the first of a series of soft launches as we began the process of bringing new concepts to the magazine. In March we launched the first of those monthly sections in the centre of the magazine and this was followed by other monthly sections, all designed to expand our content. The next piece of the jigsaw saw our Beds magazine, a separate publication three times a year, brought into Cabinet Maker as a monthly addition also. All these moves have been well received, reinforcing the direction Cabinet Maker needs to take as it meets the challenges of the increasingly digital world we all now live in. It is with this in mind that I’m pleased to announce that the next step in Cabinet Maker’s evolution is to become a monthly publication from the beginning of August, albeit with a nod to our origins in the 19th Century, as we become Cabinet Maker The Complete Home Furnisher once again. Those of you who read my last leader will have noticed my emphasis on embracing change in the digital world. Since 1880 Cabinet Maker has been, and will continue to be, the trusted news resource for our industry and, as part of our longer-term digital media strategy, the time is now right for us to embrace and lead with the strong daily digital platform we have developed over recent years. Following the success of those monthly special reports I mentioned, shining a light on new and current areas of the industry, feedback has been so encouraging that it naturally fast-tracked Cabinet Maker’s development to focus on continuing to be the leading source of daily online industry news, supported
through a monthly print magazine. In this transition so far our dedicated monthly Beds section has proved extremely popular. It will continue monthly alongside all our other previous monthly sections – Accessories and Lighting, Carpets and Flooring, Contract Furniture, and Production and Components. Beds returns in this issue with Land of Beds taking part in our series of People Behind The Products features, with its sales team leader sitting in the CM hot seat. Specialist bed manufacturer Jay-Be also features, with an interesting insight into its recent business performance. In these pages there is a complete hall guide for the Manchester Furniture Show. You will find CM at A80 and I do encourage you to pop by to enter our show competition for a chance to win a sunny holiday in Spain. Sweet Dreams, La-Z-Boy, Rowico, Furniture To Go, Gallery Direct and Heritage Furniture complete the line-up in this bumper show issue. Our approach of constructive journalism has long been at the heart of our roots and, now married with new technology, it is a development that will see this publication continue to thrive in the digital age. An exciting new chapter in our long history of covering the furniture industry dawns and we look forward to fully embracing this through the digital world whilst continuing to bring you the very best journalism in a monthly printed issue. bognor business sponsors local football team Bognor Regis business Reynolds Furniture has partnered with Bognor FC, The Rocks, to be the club’s main sponsors for the new season. The opportunity arose when businessmen Victor Coutin, managing director at GardX, donated the prize back to the club to put it up for auction after he won it in a sponsors’ draw. Commercial manager Dave Robinson said he was heartened by the number of bidders and the figures they were prepared to bid for the shirt naming rights. He said: “We had 10 firms and individuals who made bids and it was really pleasing to see the intent to be our proud sponsors. It was very closely fought, you might say, and in the end the highest bid won.” Rocks general manager Simon Cook added: “It lifts the spirits when you have so many people show such support for the club. “Their backing means a lot to us and makes a big difference to how we can operate during the course of the season. Jack and coach Robbie Blake have made some significant signings this summer and as a club we are really looking forward to the new season.”

Furniture brand celebrates 30 years with new range British furniture maker Roger Lewis has launched a new contract furniture collection, Kyoto. Aiming to bring the bespoke craftsmanship and unique design more often associated with residential furniture into the contract market, the launch comes as Roger Lewis celebrates its 30th birthday, and is the debut collection of up-and-coming British designer, Richard Jones. Utilising Roger Lewis’ renowned experience of residential furniture design, Kyoto combines a stylish and modern design with comfort and functionality required for contract furniture pieces. The range also sees Roger Lewis offer a more versatile portfolio of products, with the collection featuring bar stools, tables and privacy sofas — a first for the brand. “I wanted to take the strengths that Roger Lewis is known for, such as fine-tailoring and enduring timelessness, and repackage them within a form that would stand up to the demands of a contract environment,” explains designer, Richard Jones. “We didn’t want a product that felt like a traditional contract piece of furniture, we wanted a piece you’d be happy to have in your home.” Nick Lewis, design director at Roger Lewis, added: “When I first saw the designs for the Kyoto range, I thought they definitely had the Roger Lewis ‘handwriting’. “The collection offers something different to your standard contract furniture, with its softness and uniqueness of design.”

French furniture business strengthens decorating arm French furniture business Maisons du Monde has strengthened its service offering in decoration advice by taking a majority stake of 70.4% in Rhinov, an interior decorating start-up. Announced last month, Maisons du Monde intends to consolidate its positioning as an expert in interior decoration. Over the past 18 months, Maisons du Monde has been developing interior decoration advice services in an omnichannel approach. In December 2017, Maisons du Monde opened a showroom in Paris dedicated to support its clients in their refurbishing projects. Building on this success, Maisons du Monde launched in September 2018 a range of omnichannel services, including the deployment of decoration advice corners stores (50 at the end of June) and three digital solutions, including one in partnership with the Rhinov platform around Maisons du Monde products. Based in Bordeaux, Rhinov, which was founded in 2013, now has 50 employees and manages nearly 1,500 projects per month. In 2018, Rhinov posted revenue of 1.3 million euros. Rhinov will continue its dynamic development, operating autonomously under its own brand and with the same management team. This majority stake will enable the two companies to benefit from new synergies, notably by commercializing Rhinov’s services on Maisons du Monde’s website and in its stores. Maisons du Monde’s stake will be financed entirely in cash, without recourse to additional indebtedness.

Furniture retailer launches plan to create low cost homes Furniture retailer IKEA has confirmed it will build affordable housing in the UK after Worthing Council agreed to work with a housing developer co-owned by the business. Worthing Borough Council is looking to enter into an agreement with international residential developer BoKlok UK to deliver up to 162 homes at Fulbeck Avenue in west Worthing. The company, which has its roots in Sweden and is jointly owned by Skanska and Ikea, creates quality, contemporary homes that are also affordable. BoKlok homes will be priced so that home ownership is more accessible for local working families. As part of the deal, the council would be able to retain control of 30% of the units, ensuring it can provide social housing to those on the local waiting list. If the plans go ahead, work on the site will begin in September 2020, with residents being able to move in April 2021. Councillor Kevin Jenkins, Worthing Borough Council’s executive member for regeneration, said: “I very much welcome this innovative proposal from a ground-breaking international firm, which could bring real benefits to hundreds of local families.” “In this current market it’s extremely tough for local people who are in full-time work to get on the housing market. This proposal could change that, giving these hard-working individuals a genuine chance to buy their own home without having to move out of the town.” “The fact these homes can be built quickly, to a high quality and meet top environmental standards makes this an extremely attractive proposition.”

European furniture chain sold Austrian real estate company SIGNA Holding GmbH has announced that it has sold the Eastern European business of its furniture chain kika to Austrian online furniture retailer XXXLutz. The Eastern European business operated independently of the Austrian core business, which will profit from the proceeds of the sale. The move follows SIGNA Group’s acquisition of kika/Leiner in June 2018, with the sale allowing SIGNA to on its Austrian core business again. XXXLutz signed the contracts for the sale of the 22 locations in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania on 26th April. The sale includes both the operational retail business with 1,500 employees and the 22 properties. The proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in the national core business, allowing kika/Leiner’s modernisation programme in Austria to gain further momentum. Christoph Stadlhuber, SIGNA Holding’s chief executive, said: “As a long-standing Austrian company, securing kika/Leiner’s future for the long term in Austria and regaining a sustainable outlook was important to us from the very outset. “SIGNA has invested a triple-digit million figure in the Austrian core business and the modernisation programme is progressing extremely well. We have now taken the next step and are focusing even more on our home market.” Wolfram Keil, chair of the supervisory board of kika/Leiner, added: “The kika/Leiner team has succeeded in repositioning the company perfectly in recent months. We are regaining the trust of our customers, which is also reflected in rising sales.” The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price and the acquisition is subject to approval by the authorities.

Retailer to axe loss-making stores
Furniture manufacturer plots expansion with new site
French furniture retailer Conforama has announced plans to close more than 40 stores, impacting almost 2,000 jobs. Conforama, which is owned by Steinhoff International, said in a statement that under its restructuring and transformation of its activities in France, the project responds to the need to reduce losses and return to balance. The business plans to close loss-making stores, which includes 32 Conforama stores and 10 Maison Dépôt stores. The 164 others Conforama stores would keep a large network of French territory, which will make its estate “more customeroriented and more efficient” but will lead to job losses of 1,900. In a statement Conforama said: “The difficulties Steinhoff’s financial statements highlight a situation that is unsustainable. Competition is becoming stronger and consumption patterns are changing rapidly. In this context, our brand did not adapt sufficiently and suffered a sharp drop in profitability of its store network. The latter has experienced unreasonable growth during the recent years, aggravating the situation of Conforama, which has recorded a collapse of its operating income in recent years. Since 2013, Conforama in France has accumulated losses amounting to nearly 500 million euros. “This situation requires taking strong and rapid measures to ensure the sustainability of Conforama and save as many jobs as possible in the long run.” Conforama added it will discuss the timetable of implementing this plan with management to work closely with staff.

Contract furniture manufacturer Foremost Furniture has submitted plans to transform a former bus depot as part of its expansion. Detailed in a change of use planning application to Rossendale Council, Foremost Furniture wants to convert the former Rosso bus depot in Knowsley Park Way, Haslingden, in to a furniture manufacturing site. If approved, the expansion would see 15 new jobs created, bringing its staff number to 80, with Rossendale Council’s economic development team understood to be backing the proposal. Stated in the plans, Hadyn Creer, sales director, said: “We require a change of existing use as a garage/bus depot to use for our furniture manufacturing business.” “We manufacture compact furniture for use in public houses and have the following workshops — joinery, upholstery and polishing.” The council added: “We would welcome the expansion into the building of a furniture manufacturing business. This will bring the substantial site back into productive use and fulfil its role as an employment site. This development complements the council’s priority — a connected and successful Rossendale that welcomes sustainable growth and supporting inward investment and business growth.” Foremost Furniture has been established since 1974 and operates out of Carrs Industrial Estate. The business supplies compact furniture for use in pubs and restaurants. The council is currently reviewing the application.

Sainsbury’s gains further non-food market share
Lectra unveils trailblazing solutions
Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has revealed it has gained market share in its general merchandise categories, including furniture. According its latest trading update for the 16 weeks to 29th June total retail sales were down by 1.2% with like-for-like sales down by 1.6%. General merchandise sales declined by 3.1%, although the group outlined it had gained market share in what has been a ‘tough trading environment’. This was due to continued online growth in Argos as well as opening two more stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets, bringing the total to 283. Sainsbury’s added that its Argos fast-track collection has grown by 20% and fast-track delivery by 13% year-on-year as customers increasingly look for ‘convenient ways to shop’. The group has upgraded 29 Argos stores to digital formats in the quarter and 206 stores now offer Pay@Browse technology, meaning that customers don’t need to queue to pay.

FIRA pUBLISH BRExIT gUIDANcE The Furniture Industry Research Association has published a Brexit guide entitled ‘Brexit — the importance of planning ahead’. Whilst the information is applicable to all across the furniture sector, it may be of particular use to small medium enterprises that may not have resources to secure key information independently. The guide is an updated version and an amalgamation of various updates published on the FIRA website following the Furniture Industry Research Association’s attendance at Government’s Business Readiness Panel meetings. Author of the guide, Suzie Radcliffe-Hart, technical manager at FIRA International (the service provider to the Furniture Industry Research Association), said “The aim of the updated guide is to ensure all the latest information is easily accessible and searchable within one source, helping members find what they based on the needs of their role or type of business. “Due to the current political climate Brexit discussions have stalled. It’s difficult to guestimate what guise Brexit will take when a new Prime Minister is in place and talks resume. When Government meetings are reinstated we will once again be in attendance to garner details for members to ensure they are being supported through knowledge in the event of a deal or no-deal Brexit.” The 64 page guide is freely available to all members of the Furniture Industry Research Association via:

Over one-and-a-half days of demonstrations, presentations, workshops and customer testimonials, industry experts laid out how accelerating digital transformation and implementing Industry 4.0 principles will allow furniture manufacturers to meet new customer expectations. FURNITURE MAKER coLLABoRATES WITH AHEc Rycotewood Furniture at the City of Oxford College, one of the UK’s most-respected furniture making programmes, has collaborated with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) for a second year to produce a series of storage pieces using American red oak. AHEC tasked 17 of the school’s Second Year Foundation students with a brief to create a piece of storage out of two boards of red oak. The students were told to make the most of its natural characteristics. Each student was also asked to think of an inspirational architect or artist to influence their piece. Students used a variety of techniques, including scorching, staining, wirebrushing, fuming and steam-bending to reveal the texture of the soft-grained timber or change its colour or shape. Renowned British furniture designer Sebastian Cox was a guest tutor and spoke to the students at the beginning of the project, giving an insight into his own business and inspiring them with work he has created using red oak. Cox continued to oversee the project and mentor the students, giving each three individual sessions to advise on their pieces and critique their ideas. “Courses like these are an essential part of the make-up of a university education. A lot of product design courses have workshop access but not proper craft training and that misses something in terms of getting a deep knowledge of how to make a piece and how to read a material,” said Cox.

Worktop supplier invests for future growth and launches new website Kitchen worktop supplier Ruby Granite has continued to grow following a recent investment. Ruby Granite, founded by Ross Salter 15 years ago, recently rebranded and launched a new website, which has made a significant difference as the investment has provided a platform for the future. Ross said: “I have invested more than £700,000 into improving our infrastructure, including the administrative side and a refurbishment of the factory and state-of-the-art machines and showroom. “I want us to continue moving in this direction, but it’s important we enjoy ourselves. We experienced some growing pains and were probably expanding quicker than we could handle, but investing in our people as well as the facilities has made a big difference.
Office furniture supplier firm on sustainability
“We’re in a very good place and I would like to thank all of our staff, past and present. We have an amazing team that will help us continue to grow.”
Office furniture supplier Humanscale has announced the expansion of its Declare label into the European Market.
The business employs 21 people and operates out of its 10,000sqft facility in Mochdre, which includes a showroom and factory.
Declare is a transparency platform and product database that is changing the materials marketplace. The programme’s simplicity and ease of use by both manufacturers and product specifiers have helped fuel market demand for chemical transparency and healthier building products.
w www.rubygranite.co.uk
These labels represent Humanscale’s commitment to avoiding red-list materials and chemicals of concern, many of which are common in the furniture industry, including Formaldehyde, PVC, Chrome 6, PFC stain-resistant coatings, and HFR flame retardants. The Declare Europe launch took place in Bolzano during the 2019 Klimahouse conference on 13th June, which focused on the exchange of ideas, innovations and insights on the latest trends in the energy-efficiency and sustainability.

BIID announces 2019 conference theme The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced that its annual conference will be returning on 7th November, 2019, at 30 Euston Square, London.
The Declare transparency programme aligns with multiple sustainability certification programmes such as the Living Building Challenge, LEED and WELL, building product legislation, and purchasing programs.
Entitled Inside Knowledge 2019: What Is An Interior Designer Worth? this year’s conference will explore the value of interior design, with talks from expert speakers, advice and practical sessions to support interior designers working in the industry today.
Humanscale’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop with Declare, led by chief sustainability officer Jane Abernethy, other initiatives include its Smart Ocean chair — the first ever office product made with recycled fishing net material. With each chair produced these plastic nets are kept out of the ocean and into the office.
BIID president Elect Harriet Forde comments: “Design fees are a frequently debated topic in our industry so it’s important to give interior designers a platform to discuss their views and tackle this often contentious subject.
Going forward, all of Humanscale seating will be available in Humanscale’s new line of premium chrome-free leather upholstery. The brand is aiming to become the first company to offer chrome-free leather exclusively.
“We’re hoping that the theme for this year’s BIID 2019 conference will provide an opportunity for healthy debate and the exchange of ideas, exploring key issues that are impacting the interior design sector today. We look forward to welcoming BIID Members and industry professionals to the event in November.”
While traditional tanning processes require chromium, Humanscale’s new collection of leathers come from a carbon neutral tannery that does not utilise the harmful chemical, offering a healthier choice for users and the environment.
One of the panel discussions will explore fee transparency; is it a good or bad idea to list your fees on your website; do you charge by the hour, day, month or a fixed fee for the project?

Shop prices return to deflation Shop prices have turned deflationary for the first time since October 2018. According to the latest BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index for June, overall shop prices fell by 0.1%, compared to May when prices increased by 0.8%. This is below the 12 and six-month average price increases of 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively. Non-food prices were back in deflationary territory in June, recording a decrease of 1.2% from the 0.2% increase in May. This is below the 12 and six-month average price decline of 0.6 and 0.3%, respectively. The BRC said that prices of clothing and footwear, furniture, electricals, DIY, and other non-food were all below the level of June 2015 prices.

Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive, British Retail Consortium, said: “Shop prices fell for the first time since October 2018. It is also a sign of the fierce competition between retailers, which has long kept prices low for British consumers. “However, a no deal Brexit would hinder retailers’ abilities to continue to contain prices, as checks and delays would raise the cost of doing business. It is vital that the next Prime Minister reaches a deal with the EU and avoids the cliff edge.”

Dutch bed business explores security options Netherlands-based mattress business Beter Bed Holding has confirmed it is exploring alternatives for the future of Matratzen Concord and is in constructive dialogue with banks on required financing arrangements. Beter Bed Holding launched a new strategy in October 2018, which resulted in a strong performance in the Benelux region and an improving performance in Sweden. However, it said the recovery of Matratzen Concord has been more time-consuming than initially anticipated, which is causing liquidity constraints. To ensure a stable financial platform for the short-term, Beter Bed Holding is in constructive dialogue with banks to address short-term liquidity, to temporarily waive the covenant testing of 30th June, and to work with each other with the intent to consider a longer-term financing solution that is aligned with the new structure when certain milestones have been met. As part of this dialogue, Beter Bed Holding has agreed to provide the banks security on certain assets and has initiated the investigation of various alternatives for a full or partial exit of Matratzen Concord. The key focus of Beter Bed Holding will be to accelerate the strong performance in especially the Benelux region, which performs ahead of plan in both profitability and sales growth. Increased focus will be on the already improving performance in Sweden, and on boosting the digital and wholesale channels, where the current growth rates are ahead of what was initially anticipated. John Kruijssen, chief executive of Beter Bed Holding, said: “Since the launch of our new strategy in October 2018 we see increasing signs that our initiatives are paying off for most of our regions, but to a lesser extent for Matratzen Concord. “To accelerate the momentum in the Benelux region, we have decided to increase our focus on this profitable business to drive faster growth. We are also pleased with the improving performance in Sweden, and will boost the very promising digital and wholesale channels for the whole group. “The slower recovery process of Matratzen Concord has a significant impact on both the funding need and the financing arrangements of Beter Bed Holding. “We have started constructive dialogues with our banks to address the increased funding need, to temporarily waive the covenant testing of 30th June 2019, to ensure a stable platform for Beter Bed Holding for the short-term, and to work with each other with the intent to consider a longer-term financing solution that is aligned with the new structure when certain milestones have been met. As part of this dialogue, we will provide our banks security on certain assets. “Although the impact of our decision to investigate alternatives for Matratzen Concord might have significant consequences for the profile of Beter Bed Holding, we are convinced it will enhance our ability to agree on a stable financing for the medium-term and will positively influence the common drive of Beter Bed Holding and be in the best interest of Matratzen Concord and all customers, employees, suppliers, shareholders and other stakeholders.”

In 2018, Sleepeezee donated £20 from the sale of each of these mattresses to Travelodge’s charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. This donation, coupled with funds also raised through internal events, has enabled Sleepeezee to raise in excess of £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support to date. Continuing its partnership with Travelodge in 2019, Sleepeezee is now supporting the hoteliers next nominated charity, the British Heart Foundation. This will again see a contribution from the sale of each Travelodge Dreamer™ made to the charity. Sleepeezee has also announced its support this year to the charity Crisis. Dedicated to ending homelessness in the UK, Sleepeezee will be making a contribution to the charity from every sale of its recently-launched Perfectly British collection. Steve Warren, chief operating officer at Sleepeezee, said: “With traditional family values at the heart of our business, we aim to support charities that are important to our colleagues. To date, we have donated more than £100,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support, and continue to support the British Heart Foundation through our work with Travelodge. “Further to this, we have worked with Gold Ribbon Appeal for Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group and supported Ellenor Children’s Hospice, a local hospice that provides care for families facing illness, in raising funds both in-house and on a company wide level. “At Sleepeezee, CSR is very much woven into our everyday life and everyone in the team loves to be involved.
Established in 1951, bedding supplier Bedeck has two stores in its home country located in Belfast and Dungannon, as well as over 30 House of Fraser concessions across the UK and Ireland.
“From collecting food for our local food banks to larger scale initiatives such as our ongoing partnerships, we are extremely proud to state that Sleepeezee’s charitable donations over the past three years have totalled around a quarter of a million pounds. We’re excited to see what the next milestone for Sleepeezee can be.”

THE NAKED TRUTH
The naked truth is that the key to a great night’s sleep is maintaining the body’s temperature all night long. The body’s core temperature has a natural rhythm while sleeping which many people struggle to maintain by adding and removing layers in bed each night. It’s time to strip off your old ways! Therma-Phase+ is an advanced mattress with a unique combination of built-in phase-change crystals and additional copper particles which react to the skin’s temperature, absorbing and releasing heat while you sleep - whilst at the same time ensuring the mattress is as supportive as it can be. The team at Jay-be talks exclusively to Cabinet Maker about their continued success, product development, its sustainability and apprenticeship drive as well as an insight on what’s still to come. During the last year, folding bed specialist Jay-Be strengthened its total product offering while primarily focusing on developing the UK market, increasing production capacity and rolling out new products with a commitment to sustainability at the forefront of its development strategy. The result? An 11th straight year of successive sales growth, which the company, as Cabinet Maker found out, is extremely proud of. Roger Durrans, managing director, told us: “It’s been a really exciting year for Jay-Be with lots of new developments. We’re extremely grateful to our customers who continue to support us and for the fantastic team we have, who work extremely hard to deliver what our customers ask for.” 12th July 2019 | 36
Echoing the sentiment is Claire Clapham, finance director, who added: “It’s a credit to the hard work and commitment of whole Jay-Be team, which I’m extremely proud to be part of. The current year is showing continued growth and we are making considerable investments to ensure growth continues into the future.” On the subject of investments, Jay-Be is no stranger to committing to areas within the business that will continue its consistent upward trajectory. Sustainability is one of these areas that the company has invested heavily in over the past year. Liona Ripley, Ccommercial director, explains why: “Sustainability is something that we have taken extremely seriously for many years. It has always been a major factor in our
company’s culture, even though we haven’t previously highlighted it publicly. “One example of an area we have invested in significantly recently is our improved packaging. We can now vacuum pack and roll our mattresses to save both space and transport cube; and the packaging that we use for this purpose is made from a large proportion of recycled material. “Another major area is replacing virgin materials with high-quality recycled materials and recyclable materials where possible. One of the highlights since doing this, is that we have prevented the equivalent of more than 65 million plastic bottles from going into landfill or our oceans.

“Jay-Be has hired many apprentices over the years, in the office department as well as on the factory floor, as it is a fantastic way to get a fresh perspective for our business. We provide substantial training and view it as an invaluable pathway for facilitating progression plans and opportunities for career progression. We’ve noticed that issues surrounding the current skills gap is being tackled with the introduction of a number of new grants and schemes — which we fully support and hope to utilise in the near future.
The Supreme Pocket features Jay-Be’s innovative J-Tex™ sprung base system “We are committed to making continuous improvements and are always looking for ways to upgrade and adapt our processes. At the moment we are in the process of a huge internal sustainability audit — we are assessing each individual component in all of our products, from castors right down to each individual mattress spring, in order to trace them, see how sustainable they are to determine our strengths and weaknesses, and identify any areas for potential improvement. Ultimately, we aim to become a carbon neutral manufacturer.” Another area is apprenticeships and training. There has been plenty of talk about the skills gap across the furnishing industry and how businesses can help bridge this gap. Jay-Be has taken a powerful stance, leading the line when it comes to employing, training and retaining valuable staff. Leanne Scargill, HR manager, reveals why this is such an important aspect of the business. “Investing in training and apprenticeships is essential if businesses hope to recruit and maintain a varied, growing workforce with a variety of skills and influences from a range of generations.
“We are also committed to upskilling our existing employees in areas that aren’t purely restricted to manufacturing. Recently we implemented a training programme for factory employees in functional skills, which was delivered by an external education and training provider, which will help our staff both in and outside of the workplace. This has been a huge success to date with a 100% pass rate for all of our employees.” Roger added that the company ‘never stands still’ and the investments highlighted form part of its ongoing investment strategy that includes research and development, state-of-the-art machines and the latest technology. “By the end of 2019, we expect to have invested a further £3m on securing our future development and growth,” Roger said, continuing: “We are always working to expand our portfolio of sleep products, aligning with our company values and our One World Together™ philosophy. We also have a number of exciting new product ranges due to be launched during 2020.” Jay-Be’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The business recently won a Manufacturing Guild Mark, one of only 19 companies to have been awarded this accolade, as well as being shortlisted for a Sustainability Award by the Furniture Makers’ Company. It is this kind of recognition that gives Roger, and the team, a great sense of pride. “We are delighted to have been awarded the prestigious

“We have several exciting things to come and plan to make some big announcements in the near future.” — Roger Durrans, managing director Manufacturing Guild Mark and extremely proud that Jay-Be has been recognised in this way. As a company, we have a fantastic team spirit and achievements like, that recognise the whole company gives everyone a welldeserved boost,” he said. As the company continues to unfold potential for future growth, Liona reflected on the state of the UK market and forward developments outside Britain. “We have noticed a slight dip in our export sales as a result of our decision to focus on other priorities. Our primary focus has been the domestic market in the UK, where we have experienced great success,” she said. “We’ve also been producing far more units than ever before to meet the growing demands of our major UK retailers and we have also been concentrating on exciting new product developments and upcoming launches. It has been a tremendously successful year for us with a lot going on and we plan to build on these achievements in the coming months. “Whilst we will continue to prioritise the UK as our major market, we still have an excellent distribution structure in the USA and Canada. Current developments with our major partners over there means we expect to see a return to significant growth in these regions over the next 12 to 18 months.” With a final thought on the UK, Liona added: “It is clear that the consumer is increasingly environmentally and ethically aware, so companies need to respond to this. As a company that embraces these values, we believe we are well positioned to give the consumer what they want and, therefore, hopefully continue to succeed.” Keep up-to-date with all things Jay-Be by visiting their website and by following them on social media.

In the latest in our series of features on the people working in the furniture and beds industry, Cabinet Maker meets sales team leader Nuala Beatty, from Land of beds, who shares an insight into her role and her life away from work.
Training is a fun aspect to the role. We constantly keep up to date on new product development and industry knowledge. After relaying this to the team, we use the information to provide expert advice to ensure our customers are making the right purchase. how long have you been in your current role? I began working for Land of Beds in August 2018, just after I graduated from university with a business management degree.
Can you give a brief background on yourself? I have always worked in retail and graduated from the University of Derry, Northern Ireland, before moving to England, which led me to join Land of Beds. What is the best thing about your role? I really love how dynamic the business is, from engaging with customers on live chat or telesales, right through to face-to-face selling in one of our stores. fast that it is a great time to be part of the team in this exciting phase of the company’s growth. I also really love the training aspect. It’s rewarding to watch your team and individuals grow and succeed. I am yet to find a challenge they are not ready to face head on. We hold weekly meetings and reward a person or teams with a treat for outstanding contribution throughout that week. Most recently we had our record month, so there is always a great buzz around the office! what is the most challenging thing about your job? We sell through multiple channels — in-store, over the telephone, online, through live chat and marketplaces, so it’s important to ensure these channels can work together in real time and support each other in a unified direction, while providing exceptional service. It’s the most challenging but also the most fun.
Can you describe your typical working day? Each morning we have a team briefing before the phone lines open, which involves checking in with our teams to discuss daily targets and individual agendas to ensure we have everything required to face the day head on. We then do a store walk around to ensure everything is presented correctly. Finally, we check our individual diaries to make sure everything is covered, from messages to follow up on to customer enquiries to get answers for, and quotations to follow up on. The day then consists of actively following up on our sales leads and managing the high volume of incoming leads from all sales channels, whilst focusing on providing excellent service to each customer that contacts us. We quality check the work of our teams throughout the day to make sure we are putting our best selves forward and constantly feed back to our team. »

At the end of each shift we have a minidebrief about how the day has gone, what we have learnt and to celebrate our successes. what would you say pulled you into wanting a career in the furnishing industry? I was aware that Land of Beds had a great reputation in our local area, plus, I followed their charity work on social media, which they did to raise money for great local causes. When I looked at the company history on the About Us page on the website I was very impressed with the number of business awards they had won and their ambition to become the UK’s number one bed retailer. Plus, the fact that they were a family business struck a chord with me as I had previous experience of working for a family business back in Ireland. I believe there is something more familiar with a family business from a consumer and staff perspective, because you can form a deeper connection. From my first interaction with everyone in the business it was clear I really wanted to be a part of their journey. 12th July 2019 | 40
Can you share something that your coworkers may not know about you? I’m a big foodie and love to cook from scratch. When cooking with my boyfriend, we pretend we have our own cooking show. Super silly but it keeps it from getting monotonous! What are your favourite things in life? Fine wine, food and family What are your future ambitions? Business is growing fast, even from when I started so much has changed. We have taken on new staff and continue to develop roles, which is creating more career opportunities. I would like to continue to develop my role in sales, because I feel I still have lots to
learn and hopefully lots to offer. As the business progresses, I am striving for a higher management position and would love to get involved in the buying side of the operation. Do you have any career highlights that spring to mind? I helped devise some of our internal sales processes in an attempt to increase conversion rates and average order values, whilst delivering a five-star customer experience. It was great working alongside our general sales manager to help deliver the new sales journey we wanted customers to experience. Based on the success of implementing the process throughout the organisation, I won a recognition award for my efforts on the project.

Sweet Dreams talks about its new products taking centre stage during the Manchester Furniture Show, with an emphasis on upholstery.
Sweet Dreams is to launch British-made sofas, sofabeds and chairs, and recliners from overseas, at the Manchester Furniture Show — the first time Sweet Dreams have exhibited there for several years. The Lancashire-based company has seen significant growth in its upholstery range in the last year and has expanded the range. The main focus is on British-made 3-2-1 and corner suites, together with standalone 12th July 2019 | 46
chairs, and serious investment in design, manufacture and compliance technology has seen the range making headway in the retail market and gaining real traction. Complementing this collection are Sweet Dreams’ imported recliners. These sofas have also caused a buzz in the industry; models Urbino and Trieste kick-started buyers’ enthusiasm in January 2018 and this has been built upon with Tuscany in studded soft-
handle, textured fabric and Rutland in dark grey fabric — more than 40% of orders taken at the NEC were for upholstery. More models have been added during the summer to this range, and to the British-made sofabeds that were the other sensation at Sweet Dreams’ 2019 January Furniture Show; an expansion more than justifying exhibiting at Manchester this year.

Sofabeds are to be the second highlight of Sweet Dreams’ Manchester show, too. The four new UK-manufactured sofabeds that did so well at the NEC — especially Dawn and Dusk, a corner unit with chaise storage — are to be on display and complemented by a new model, Sunset. Sunset is a two-seater and comes in Sweet Dreams’ excellent choice of fabrics. It features an easy, pull-out action with a fixed mattress similar to that of favourite Dusk, and the mattress is fully sprung. Sweet Dreams have always offered sofabeds — both UK-manufactured and imported models — and currently they’re more popular than ever. One theory for this popularity is that in the current climate of uncertainty people are reluctant to move house and are
extending their homes instead or finding ways of accommodating their needs within their existing houses and apartments — so giving rise to the surge in sales of sofabeds. Bedroom cabinet, which will also be on display at Manchester, is a third area where Sweet Dreams’ ranges are highly regarded. The ready-assembled collection has appeal to two different markets. There is the top-quality range encompassing Vincent in dark acacia and Spencer in solid oak, each with a slatted bedframe, together with a myriad of gorgeous matching furniture. And there is a further collection of very commercial ready-assembled bedroom

U p H o L S T E R y F E A T U R E |S W E E T D R E A M S New products are one thing, yet keen prices and short lead times are just as vital to retailers and Sweet Dreams caters to these needs. For products manufactured to order in its Lancashire premises, it guarantee delivery of sofas and chairs within 14 working days to mainland Britain. For products that are not own-manufacture, such as recliners and bedroom cabinet, the company carries stock and offers a same-day collection service if orders are placed before 9.30am, or next-day delivery. Compliance is yet another critical factor in manufacturing goods for the British marketplace — perhaps the most essential. Sweet Dreams has always paid huge attention to this, and boasts an excellent record to prove it. In 2019, the manufacturer has taken another step with the founding of its own testing centre. (See article below)

The melaminefaced chipboard lends itself to a variety of finishes, from high gloss white to beech to walnut. At Manchester, Sweet Dreams will have new pieces to exhibit. So what other new models are to be shown at Manchester? Well, there’ll be several new British-made
sofas; Blenheim, an attractive 3-2-1, and Knole which comes in two versions — a scatterback and a standard sofa — and Pixton, a versatile model with a chaise option. They will complement sofas and chairs first seen at the NEC. Sweet Dreams is likely to be showing new recliners, and for popular textured fabric power recliner Tuscany, a fresh colourway: chestnut. Then, as we’ve seen, there’s the sofabed Sunset, a new model for the British-made range.

A Different Approach It’s so quiet, customers are not coming into the shops and business is down. Without a doubt, things are tough for many retailers. Call it what you want, Brexit, lack of confidence, the weather! With footfall in rapid decline, what is a furniture retailer to do? Newspaper adverts are no longer drawing in the crowds and those periodic sales are seemingly more cliché. As the marketing manager at Heritage Furniture, hearing all this I feel the pain. Which leads me to the question — what is it that we can do to help retailers?
12th July 2019 | 50
Collections that stand out Let’s break this down. There is no shortage of cabinet furniture. Commercial ranges have flooded the market, resulting in retailers stocking the same-looking furniture all because they can get it at a cheap price. At Heritage, we focus on bringing out unique designs that can help retailers stand out in the marketplace. Retailers need strong ranges that are distinct on their shop floor There are a number of benefits for investing in a range that is slightly different from the stock you hold. If displayed right, it can improve footfall. Some of these ranges like

the Sunbury or the Alba have distinct features that not only attract passing traffic, they can be used as talking points or conversation starters. We have seen this work with our customers. One retailer had the Sunbury displayed beautifully in a prime location by the window. They complemented the display with premium upholstery, which resulted in an amazing display that attracted potential customers into the store. The additional benefit for our customer came when they realised it was attracting a new younger audience who they don’t traditionally serve.

How we have tried to resolve this is by improving our pricing strategy to ensure retailers can secure higher margins whilst offering a competitive price. The focus then becomes more on maximising the opportunity on each customer who walks in. At Heritage, we have designed it so you make more margin selling our collections compared to other suppliers. But apart from that what more can suppliers do? This question has been playing on my mind. The latest initiative I have tried is running a promotion over a period of time to take away the barrier for retailers to purchase from us. Whilst this has worked for some, others commented ‘great offer but I just don’t have the traffic coming in.’
So we are back to square one The reality is, each retailer is different and the challenges they face differ from one to another, which makes applying a blanket approach redundant. The approach I have found to be more effective is simply going to retailers and asking how we can help, then sitting back and listening. It is surprising to see the responses we get. In our arsenal of support, we have a number of tools that can help retailers with options that work for them. At the Manchester Furniture Show, Heritage is ready to give you all the support you need to get you through these turbulent times. Just drop by at stand D20 to find out more.

Its current design directories focus on several on-trend key looks — Luxe, Bohême, Elegant Industrial, Nordic, Calm Oasis and Artisan. Each of these offers a different feel. KEY
Over the last few months, the team has been working on its AW19 Collection, which will be launched at this year’s Autumn Fair. James Hudson, sales and business development director, told us: “This will be the biggest AW launch in Gallery’s history with about 500 exciting new products, including furniture, upholstery, wall décor, lighting and soft furnishings, featuring three key looks.” One of these looks is the popular Luxe. The new launch will include upholstery with indulgent shapes, and furniture, featuring metal and glass display units, along with lighting, soft furnishings and wall decor. Encompassing sophistication and luxury, with a combination of dark tones and metallic
finishes, Luxe is very on-trend at the moment. “We are also introducing two new looks for AW19,” continued James, “to offer even more variety to customers. These will again give a different feel, but I don’t want to give too much away at this stage, or it would spoil the surprise at the Autumn Fair!” The new furniture includes collections for those who like a more coordinated look to a room, and stand-alone individual items, for a more eclectic feel to add interest and character to interiors. From eye-catching mirrored pieces to stylish metallics, and from sumptuous velvet to luxurious leather, the new collection is one to look out for at the Autumn Fair.

But ahead of this, Gallery is also launching a range of new products at the Bed Show. James told us, “We have developed some exciting new beds, mattresses, bedsteads, ottomans and headboards, along with two new sofas and a footstool. Customers who attended our @Home event had an exclusive preview of these, however, they are being officially launched to the trade at the Bed Show.”

Building on its growing brand presence and popularity throughout the UK and Ireland, La-Z-boy is all set for its grandest Manchester Furniture Show yet.
Presenting its largest ever stand at the Manchester Furniture Show, replete with 15 new designs, recliner specialist La-Z-Boy is focusing on an expanded consumer base to boost high street appeal over the year ahead. Marketing director Mark Draper gave Cabinet Maker the low-down on what visitors to Manchester Central can expect from the upholstery giant. More than two years on from La-Z-Boy Inc reacquiring the licence for the UK and Ireland, the brand is experiencing an abundance of appeal and recognition across the territory. Many interwoven elements of the marketing 12th July 2019 | 58
strategy are paying off in combination, to increase desire for the products, hand in hand with building consumer knowledge of the brand and its values. An expansion of the product line is a natural progression and La-Z-Boy’s Manchester Furniture Show stand will offer a wealth of new ranges that again push the expectations of La-Z-Boy furniture that bit further in the minds of retailers and consumers alike. Mark explained the planning process behind this year’s event. “Our 2019 Manchester Furniture Show stand is intended to offer more choice than ever
before to our buyers, while capitalising on our brand power and the popularity of our bestselling collections,” he explained. “Everything on the stand will be recognisable as La-Z-Boy, providing the comfort of brand familiarity, but with a twist that offers something new — whether that’s an updated arm design or a new product entirely. “Our aim is to fill the gaps so that consumers can choose La-Z-Boy products for all their living room needs. So, in turn, this will not only attract new customers to the brand, but will encourage repeat custom or increased sales from those who are already brand loyal.”

Following TV advertising and national press ads last year, there has been a non-stop digital campaign, combining display banners on key sites alongside search engine keyword marketing. In addition, La-Z-Boy has sought out a younger demographic through selective event partnerships. Last year, as well as this, the brand is a supplier to and partner of FriendsFest — a highly-popular touring live experience for fans of the cult US TV show. And for the first time, in 2019, LaZ-Boy was official Comfort Partner to two music festivals. Visitors to Strawberries & Creem and The Cambridge Club festivals were offered the chance to win The Best Seats in the House, viewing the main stage from the comfort of La-Z-Boy sofas and chairs on a special raised platform. Meanwhile, acts including Sister Sledge, Craig Charles and Ms Dynamite, relaxed backstage on a La-Z-Boy corner group during interviews and downtime. VIPs could also enjoy drinks in a special La-Z-Boy relaxation zone.

should allow sufficient time to take in the ranges on display. Fifteen new introductions will be shown, giving buyers plenty of food for thought. “We’ll have 12 upholstery groups, which are available as power or manual recliners, as well as static products,” Mark continued. “Buyers will notice a distinct theme across the stand, with products that convey a contemporary edge, featuring detailing that’s not normally associated with the La-ZBoy range.

“We hope this will inspire customers to explore La-ZBoy who may not normally consider the traditional brand aesthetic for their homes — and, of course, our core audiences
will be catered for too.” In addition to the new suites, from the Comfort Studio and Urban Attitudes collections, La-Z-Boy will unveil its refreshed pedestal chair collection. These swivel chairs are a versatile and affordable option for customers looking for branded luxury in a wide range of areas of the home.
“It’s really important for us to get our products in front of our potential customers so they can see first-hand the quality and experience the comfort,” Mark said.
And, for the first time, a sofa bed will be introduced to the La-Z-Boy UK product range, offering an additional sale opportunity and a route to introduce the brand.
“We also want our customers to associate LaZ-Boy with fun, good times, togetherness and enjoying quality time with friends and family. It’s this emotional impact that really makes a strong connection and continues from the powerful messaging of our Connoisseurs of Comfort advertising campaign.”

LAST WORD BECCI PELL, MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, HÄFELE UK Temporary storage units — an unnecessary expense? With more than 1,500 self-storage sites in the UK — a number that looks set to grow — there’s no denying that temporary storage is big business at the moment. In fact, a recent report by the Self Storage Association revealed a significant increase in the number of UK households using these facilities, despite the fact that the associated cost can be upwards of £2k per year. So, what’s behind people’s growing passion for packing things away? A significant proportion of self-storage use can be explained by unavoidable factors — including death, divorce or downsizing — but these aren’t the only factors at play. Shrinking house sizes and the rise in demand for rental accommodation is putting space at a premium, leading to traditional storage spaces, such as lofts, being converted into living space. Compound this with the growing trends for minimalism and beautifully-organised interiors and the case for self-storage begins to look particularly compelling. But is self-storage space really worth shelling out for? Recent research by TalkTalk, which indicated that 15% of space in the average home is unused, raises doubts. In fact, in many cases, homeowners could be doing more to maximise their existing available space. Even in cases where space is particularly tight, and no amount of clever rejigging is going to allow larger items to be accommodated, temporary storage for smaller items, (clothing, kitchen goods, collectibles etc) is rarely the most logical solution. Enter the new breed of inventive solutions, which are taking the market by storm. The

industry, responding to the storage challenge with customary creativity, is introducing an ever-expanding array of innovative products designed to make the most of every inch of space within the home, and provide that allimportant extra storage space.
latest industry innovations, ranging from simple, modular shelving units to bespoke, angled drawer systems, are designed to optimise every inch of space, redefining this characteristically disorganised area into an efficient, organised storage asset.
Manufacturers, recognising that the key to optimising a room’s storage potential lies in using all of its dimensions — height and depth, as well as length and width — effectively, are inventing a range of solutions allowing fitters, designers — and ultimately homeowners — to do just that.
Innovations in smaller details are also playing a huge role in ramping up the potential for storage within the home. Fuelled in part by the growing trend for super-organised, social media-friendly interiors, demand is rising for solutions that help to organise items that have been stored away, such as in-drawer and in-cupboard dividers. Components such as drawer runners are also being given a rethink, as people’s increasingly fast-paced lives are leading to further demand for storage that moves fluidly to fit in with their needs as efficiently as possible.
Tall, narrow storage solutions, specifically designed to maximise a room’s vertical space, have made a particular splash. Pullout and swing-out larder units, as well as stackable drawers, are all perfect for turning traditionally unused space — e.g. gaps between kitchen cabinets — into key storage assets. Corners, traditionally some of the trickiest areas to use as storage, have also seen their potential completely transformed by clever industry innovation. Notoriously hard to reach, they have often ended up becoming places where things are forgotten about, or dead space that simply isn’t used at all. Now, there are a wealth of transformative solutions on the market, including pull-out or swingout shelves and drawers, which are making corner storage far more practical by allowing the depth of the space to be used to its full potential.
Whatever the size of the home, there is so much that can be done to maximise available storage space. The industry is working hard to educate homeowners about the wealth of smart solutions now available that will help them make the most of every single square metre.

Another typically under-utilised area in many houses is the space under the stairs. While many households do traditionally have cupboards here, it’s only recently that real thought has been given to maximising the space’s storage capabilities. The
