When the latest retail sales figures appeared for last month, the BRC issued a stark warning to the Government that the risk of further stores closing has increased. However, the furniture sector proved to buck the declining trend and was one of the only few product categories to report an uptick in performance. The BRC put this down to the benefit from the bank holiday weekends at the beginning and the end of the month, as well as consumers embarking on home improvements. In fact, I was one of those having recently purchased a new dining table — one that extends! What the BRC is shining a light on is the fact that, on a wider scale, retailers are continuing to navigate in extremely tough conditions and the Government should be responding to the cry before the high street becomes nothing but a ghost town. A constant barrier is business rates. With rates being high it prevents retailers from investing in their stores, says the BRC, which added that ‘we have a broken tax system’ and that ‘legislation is falling behind the technological revolution’. The Government must heed this warning. Within the furniture sector, there has been a fair share of investments being pumped into businesses, which is brilliant to see. And with shoppers currently in the mood to spend on refreshing their homes, long may the furniture tills keep ringing.

week welcomes the first of a monthly Beds Supplement dedicated to all things beds, mattresses and the like. Inside you will find Sealy UK’s view on apprenticeships and what success it has achieved so far, an important message on sustainability from Boyteks, an equally important message on recycling and creating a circular economy from Vita Talalay, and an inside look at Dreams’ new Sleepmatch and Sleepmotion technologies. With the Manchester Furniture Show swiftly round the corner, the timing is spot on to unveil what to expect to see in our first preview ahead of next month’s event. Next up is a special insight from WorldSkills, where cabinet making master, Christian Notley, answers the question on how do you train world-class cabinet makers? To round off the issue, we have our latest People Behind The Products feature as Paul Carruthers, from Artistic Upholstery, sits in the hot seat. Remember, this is an ongoing series and we would love to hear from your business, so please get involved and share your staff’s story. A final word, well the Last Word, comes from recently-appointed Master of the Furniture Makers’ Company, Dids Macdonald, who shares the details behind its One Step at a Time initiative and how the charity can help people in the industry at their time of need. As Dids elegantly concludes: “Who knows when we all might need a little help one day?”

John Lewis to trial virtual reality To help customers with what is often the hardest part of shopping for new home products — deciding what they will look like in your room — John Lewis & Partners is to trial a new virtual reality experience called Visualise Your Space. Guided by John Lewis Partners in three trial shops, customers will be able to put the dimensions of the room they want to update into an iPad via an app, and then drop in John Lewis products to see how their interior ideas would look. Users will be able to view their designed room on either an iPad, as a 3D room set in augmented reality, or wear a virtual reality headset to ‘walk around’ the room. Afterwards customers will be emailed a copy of the room they created with shoppable links. Caitlin Price, head of buying for furniture and flooring, said: “This new technology will enable customers to be braver in their choices, and test technology that architects and interior designers have been using to visualise their designs.” The technology has been developed by US-based design and 3D visualisation company Marxent. Co-founder of Marxent, Beck Besecker said: “John Lewis understands how important inspiration is to modern furniture shoppers. We’re proud to be partnering with them to test this technology in the UK.” The trial will begin at John Lewis & Partners’ Kingston shop on 26th June, in Cambridge on 28th June, and in Horsham on 2nd July.

BFM SECURES MILAN SHOW TAP FUNDING The 58th edition of the ‘Salone del Mobile Milano’ held in early April was once again successful for the furniture industry. It attracted more than 386,236 visitors in six days from 181 different countries, an increase of 12% compared with the 2018 show, which also featured the bi-annual ‘Euroluce’ lighting and ‘Workplace’ office furniture sector events. According to organisers, this reconfirmed that the Salone with 2,418 exhibitors, 34% from 43 other countries, was the world’s largest and most important international furniture fair, with 69% of visitors coming from counties other than Italy. BFM members exhibiting were Ercol, Duresta and Gascoigne Designs. Also exhibiting from the UK, with TAP government funding, were Bert Frank, Thomas Blakemore, Oxley’s Furniture, JF Lemay and CTO Lighting, Studio Furthermore and Michael Anastassiades — and all reported a very successful show. As a Trade Challenge Partner, BFM offered support to all those companies and secured and administered the TAP funding, worth £1,500 per eligible company, some of whom would not have been able to exhibit without this financial support. Gascoigne designs had a particularly good show and, as a result of BFM liaising with the show organisers, has verbally confirmed an even more prominent space for the 2020 show. To find out more about how to have access to government TAP funding, along with membership benefits, contact the BFM.

Which? complains to ASA over ad Home improvement retailer Wickes has been told not to mislead on future discounting claims after receiving a number of complaints. Wickes displayed a website advert, which was seen in August and September 2018, that featured multi-buy discount claims on a showroom kitchen. However, six complainants, including Which?, challenged whether the claim “Multi-Buy 50% off Showroom Kitchen Units when you buy 5+” was misleading. Despite Wickes responding to the challenge by stating that it ‘believed it was made clear throughout the ads’ that the ‘50% off’ offer was a multi-buy promotion, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld the ruling. Following an investigation, the ASA said that it noted that Wickes had significantly increased the price of individual units on the day of the promotion, effectively cancelling out any saving for the consumer, and it was likely to be misleading. In a statement, the ASA said: “We told Wickes Building Supplies Ltd not to mislead by basing discount claims on reference prices that were not likely to be meaningful for consumers. We also told them to ensure list prices were not altered in a way that gave the misleading impression that a genuine saving could be made when that was not the case.”

Department store to close one outlet Family-run department store Tudor Williams has begun its closing down sale at one of its long-standing stores. Its store on High Street in New Malden, which has been trading for more than 100 years, will close for the final time at the end of June after the owners decided to shut the store due to a lack of improved sales. The company also confirmed that its store in Dorking and sister store, Elphicks of Farnham, are unaffected by the decision and will continue to trade as normal, with both recently undergoing a major refurbishment. In a statement, John Morris, group managing director, said: “Despite the tremendous effort by our New Malden management and staff and the extensive refurbishment, the store has unfortunately not seen the necessary improvement in sales. With ongoing rising costs, and the tough retail climate, it is with the greatest of reluctance that we have concluded that we are unable to continue trading at the store. “Neither our Dorking store nor our sister store, Elphicks of Farnham, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment, are affected by this decision and will continue to trade as normal. “We would like to thank all those employees past and present, who made the business what it was. Kitchen retailer proposes new £120m facility investment

CDW created almost 70,000 new business leads

Wren Kitchens is planning to create up to 1,200 new jobs at its Barton-upon-Humber headquarters as it prepares to invest more than £120m in its fourth manufacturing facility in the Humber region. The kitchen retailer is submitting a planning application for a new 910,000sq ft facility to be built behind the existing factory on part of its 180-acre site. From opening its first showroom 10 years ago, Wren has grown to become the UK’s largest kitchen retailer with 78 showrooms nationwide. The company requires this new facility to keep up with its future expansion plans. Wren Kitchens currently employs more than 1,500 people at its headquarters in Barton, with another 1,000 people employed at its sites in Scunthorpe, Howden and in Hull. If the planning application is approved Wren is ‘confident’ that up to 1,200 new jobs will be created when the factory is fully operational. Mark Pullan, Wren Kitchens managing director, said: “This project will be the largest single investment in Wren’s history and, having considered different locations both across the UK and abroad, we believe that developing the existing site in Barton-upon-Humber provides us with the best solution. “The new factory demonstrates our commitment to manufacturing in the UK and particularly the Humber region. We believe that continual reinvestment in our business is essential to maintaining our current growth rate and subject to receiving planning approval, the project will be funded internally.” Aside from the 1,200 new manufacturing roles, Wren will also be creating new positions in IT development, engineering, customer service, and product development to keep pace with growing customer demand.

Sales up at logistics, property arm and in Irish market Swedish furniture giant IKEA has reported another growth in turnover within its Irish division. According to its latest filed accounts for IKEA Ireland, ended 31st August 2018, total sales rose 8.6% to €181.1m (£160.8m) from €166.7m (£148m) in 2017. The growth in sales marked a sixth straight year of rising turnover. Gross profit was slightly down to €54.7m (£48.5m) from €57.5m (£51m), whilst pre-tax profit resulted at €2.5m (£2.2m), down from its profit of €8.9m (£7.9m) recorded last year. Stated within its report, IKEA said that its new ecommerce platform, which went live during November 2017, has been more successful than expected although this change in sales method required additional investment. IKEA also reported growth within its distribution services division, which provides logistics to its UK retail network, over the same period. Total sales rose 24.5% to £102.4m from £82.2m in 2017, whilst pre-tax profit increased 24.3% to £4.6m from £3.7m. IKEA said that it has continued to invest in resources to support its multi-channel strategy as well as its capacity with two customer distribution centres in London. Finally, IKEA UK also reported a growth in sales within its property division, a company that provides rental units for its retail businesses. Total sales rose 2.5% to £82m from £80m over the same period, however, pre-tax profit of £70m recorded last year fell into the red at a loss of £11m. IKEA said this was due to an ‘unfavourable fair value decrease’ of the investment property portfolio with a ‘decline in market conditions’. The company added that administrative expenses also increased due to the continued cost of investment and opening of two new stores.

SPECIALIST FURNITURE MAKER SECURES VITAL FUNDING Accountancy firm Pierce has helped its client Remexx, which employs local people with disabilities to manufacture educational furniture, to secure vital funding required to keep the business running. The business, born from the closure of Remploy Blackburn, currently employs seven people from the local area with disabilities to manufacture tables and desks for primary and secondary schools, colleges and academies. Remexx was set up by former Remploy employees David Sussex and Peter Clarke. The duo have since been joined by new partner Mark Lomax, of Lomax Office Furniture, after Pierce introduced Mark to the business. David said: “When we worked at Remploy, we could apply for government grants, however, this funding has now been withdrawn. We still wanted to give local people with disabilities employment opportunities as we know how beneficial it is to them, but it has been a challenge to get funding. “Thankfully the team at Pierce has been able to facilitate funding and introduce us to people who have provided grants for Remexx, which have been absolutely vital to the business.” Pierce has also helped Remexx by advising on year-end timings, R&D credits and tax breaks and supply them with year-end accounts, management information and cash-flow projections. David added: “Pierce has really helped us since we established Remexx in 2014, but the thing that has been most invaluable is their advice. The team is knowledgeable, excellent to talk to and they have genuinely helped us to transform the business.” Mark Walmsley, associate director at Pierce, said: “Remexx is a fantastic business that not only manufactures top-quality products, but offers an invaluable service to people in our community. We know it has been a real challenge for David and the team to get funding to keep this service running, so we’re really proud to have given them the support and contacts to achieve this. Remexx has a very strong business model in place and we look forward to continuing to support them.”

‘Furniture sales up’, says BRC Furniture and homeware retail sales benefited from the bank holiday during May, despite overall sales experiencing a record low. According to the latest BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor for May, total sales decreased by -2.7% in the month, with like-for-like sales down by -3% year-on-year. Over a three-month average, non-food sales decreased -1.1%, despite an increase in furniture and homeware sales. Likefor-like sales were down by -2.7%, with fashion the worst hit category. Paul Martin, partner, UK head of retail | KPMG, said: “April may have provided retailers with some light reprieve thanks to Easter, but May’s staggering fall of 3% like-for-like is a stark reminder of the industry’s ongoing issues, which for many require urgent attention. “The bank holiday weekends have given rise to the added interest in furniture and homewares, as shoppers set about making home improvements. However, the weather did little to convince fashion-minded shoppers to refresh their seasonal wardrobes.” Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive, BRC, added: “With the biggest decline in retail sales on record, the risk of further job losses and store closures will only increase. “With retail conditions the toughest they have been for a decade, politicians must act to support the successful reinvention of our high streets and local communities. Business rates remain a barrier, preventing many retailers from investing in their physical space.”

MANUFACTURER GROWS SALES AGAIN Huddersfield-based manufacturer Ellis Furniture has reported a second straight year of turnover growth. The heritage furniture source, which operates a direct-toconsumer trading model alongside a contract furniture division, saw sales grow by 11.8% to £24.5m for the year ended 30th June 2018 compared to £21.9m in 2017. The growth in turnover was due to the successful implementation of its new strategic plans. Gross profit fell by 12.9% to £5.4m from £6.2m year-on-year, whilst its pre-tax profit of £407,912 recorded last year slipped into the red at a loss of £584.427.

Business commissioned to supply heritage carpet Floorcoverings supplier Grosvenor Wilton has been appointed by Riley Register to reproduce carpet used in the early 1900s. Grosvenor Wilton has created a cut pile Wilton using twocoloured stipple yarns. The current offering includes red/black stipple carpet with blue/ black and green/black options to follow. The partnership between the two brands has meant that members of the Riley Register can restore their interiors to the original design and look. Charles Annable, Grosvenor Wilton managing director, said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Riley Register on this project. “Our reproduction is very close to the original carpet in terms of quality and colour. We have been given original car carpets to match to which are more than 80 years-old. “We found some old car carpets that had little exposure to sunlight and it was surprising how bright the colours are.”

To enter, customers need to pick up and complete an entry form at one of the firm’s four showrooms located in Poole, Blandford, Salisbury and Chandler’s Ford.

Stated within its report, the company said that gross margin decreased to 22% from 28% due to a change in product mix and ‘irrecoverable’ post-Brexit supply chain cost increases.

Once completed customers must put it in a letterbox that can also be found at each of the retailer’s stores.

Other indicators that impacted its margin included a period of investment costs in new processes and plant.

The competition, which was launched by owners Mark and Lucy Hotson in an effort to reward its loyal customers as part of its anniversary celebrations, will run throughout 2019.

In a short statement, administrators added that the new ownership would allow the business, which manufactures bedroom products, to move forward.

‘BIG BLOW’ AS FURNITURE BUSINESS SCALES BACK MANUFACTURING ARM Independent furniture wholesaler Devonshire Pine has confirmed that it has scaled back its pine manufacturing division due to the increasing competition of oak imports. In light of this restructuring, the business also announced 28 redundancies, but reaffirmed its finishing plant would remain operational as will its import division. Devonshire said pine had ‘taken a knock’ when oak imports started to increase in the UK and that its pine sales figures reflected this movement as the business wasn’t ‘making any profit from the size of the orders coming in’. Speaking to Cabinet Maker, Andy Waddell, managing director at Devonshire Pine, said: “The decision to scale back the manufacturing division has come as a big blow to us. It isn’t something that we have chosen to do lightly but, with the pine sector not performing to how we would like, it needed to be made. “We just can’t compete with what is coming in from abroad. It’s a decision that possibly should have been made a few years ago, but we tried to work through it, for the good of our local workforce and British manufacturing as a whole. “We are certainly not closing the factory altogether, and will still be keeping our finishing plant running where we will continue to finish products that we bring in from abroad. We have chosen to focus more on our import business, which has been developing successfully since we started importing in 2005.” Furthermore, Andy said that the business was not standing still in this difficult period: “Not only will we be bringing in our current manufactured ranges at more competitive prices, but we have also brought on a designer who we are already working with on three new and exciting ranges — with even more in the pipeline to follow. “By not manufacturing these ourselves we can explore other fashionable shapes and materials not possible in our current setup. We have also employed a new sales director, who has vast experience with sourcing abroad, and so with his guidance we will also look to improve our quality surveillance overseas and overall service to our retailers.”

FLOORING COMPANY FINED £500K Two companies, including flooring firm Altro Limited, have been fined following the death of a floor layer in London. Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that on 4th September, 2015, Paul Tilcock was found dead by the owner of the house in Mitcham on the bathroom floor. The adhesive used to fix the flooring contained a large amount of a toxic substance. London’s top cultural leaders are being paired with influential designers to create a ‘Legacy’ piece in American red oak for London Design Festival. Sir John Sorrell, chairman of the festival, has called upon his friends at London’s top cultural institutions to collaborate with some of the world’s most prolific designers to create a ‘Legacy’ piece in American red oak. It will be shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in September. The project is in collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), whose European director, David Venables, spearheaded the idea, and Benchmark Furniture whose Berkshire workshop will make all the pieces over the summer. “AHEC is always pushing the boundaries for American hardwoods and we wanted to create a project that celebrates the use of red oak to demonstrate not just how beautiful it is for furniture making, but also to test the performance and quality of this abundant wood,” said David Venables. “It’s a fabulous project with incredible designers. We can’t wait to see what emerges from these unique collaborations.” Sean Sutcliffe, founder of Benchmark, added: “I am looking forward to working with some designers that we have not worked with before, and re-engaging with some that we have. “I’m going to be interested to see what they come up with in a ‘single material’ like American Red Oak — and in such a short time frame. I am also excited to get a brief glimpse into the personal thinking of some of the leaders of London’s major cultural institutions. “Whenever we do a project of this sort, we always end up with something of a festival atmosphere at Benchmark, with all our makers engaging with new challenges, in a very short timeframe, and lots of super interesting visitors through our doors. “I’m looking forward to the fun we shall have working with AHEC on this great project, which champions the use of sustainable wood sources.” The designers and commissioners are:

Home furnishings retailer acquired from administration Home furnishings retailer Skandium has been acquired by Nordic Design enthusiasts, Rasmus Warnke Nørregaard and Jacob Kam, both from Denmark, as a new management team to create an improved business. Their plan is to reshape Skandium into a sound business with increased attention to customer demand and a diverse offering of unique design objects. The management of the new Skandium company says they aim to re-open Skandium.com as soon as possible, once staff and practicalities are in place. No decision has been made on the future of the five retail stores the previous Skandium company has been operating, including its showroom in London. Rasmus Warnke Nørregaard, newly-appointed partner in Skandium, said: “Our passion has always been to enable people to enjoy the qualities of Nordic design. So, we find it a privilege to take over the Skandium name and we strive to live up to the expectations of the many customers who choose Skandium as their place for Nordic design pieces.” The newly-founded company confirmed that it will begin its business with zero debt, and will be provided with significant working capital to ensure a stable foundation for a long-term commitment to its customers and suppliers. With several years of experience in the Danish design industry, both Jacob Kam and Rasmus Warnke Nørregaard will make use of their network on the supplier side as well as a best-practice of online marketing within the design market. The two Danes own and run Everclassic.com, an online marketplace that connects vintage design retailers in the Nordics with design lovers all over the world, giving them an opportunity to offer Skandium customers something more. Jacob Kam, partner in Skandium, added: “We have a detailed and extensive plan to create the best possible experience for our customers on Skandium.com. One of the things we plan to provide in the near future is the introduction of truly unique, vintage design objects alongside the well-known product range of Nordic design.” The acquisition is a result of the previous company behind Skandium going into administration in April 2019, from where an administrator has sought to sell company assets. Further details of the agreement were not disclosed.

New sustainable tech for mattresses Textile innovator Devan Chemicals has announced the launch of a new mattress technology. Officially unveiled at the Techtextil show in Frankfurt, Devan has launched Bio-flam, a bio-based flame retardant product. It said in the quest for sustainability and transparency every company faces these days, the new Devan technologies offer answers to product developers and portfolio designers. Bio-flam P307 is the first introduction in the new Devan BIO-FR family, and is biodegradable. It is developed to be used on 100% cotton or cotton/viscose mixtures, in order to create an ecological concept that is safe for people and the planet. Bio-flam P 307 is developed for mattress ticking to pass EN 597 1&2. The Devan researchers are developing other bio-based products for other market segments and for other fire standards. Bio-based FR treatments, like Bio-flam, are made from renewable, vegetable sources and enable the FR treated products to be biodegradable. The active components are 100% halogen and heavy metal-free. The European Commission requires mattresses to be recyclable by 2030 in order to reduce landfill.

BED MAKER COMMITS TO SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES Bed manufacturer Hypnos has announced that its Princes Risborough site has successfully achieved compliance with ISO14001, the standard that specifies requirements for an effective Environmental Management System (EMS). ISO14001 is a voluntary standard and, to pass the audit, the business had to assess every area of its manufacturing processes. Over the last 10 years Hypnos has undergone a comprehensive sustainability journey and the road to compliance has required it to review the way it operates to achieve a wide range of environmental objectives. These have included efforts to reduce the CO2 produced per unit by 10% each year, to maintain carbon neutrality and to eliminate factory waste going to landfill. With a clear focus on sustainable design, all Hypnos beds are completely recyclable, ensuring they never need to go to landfill. The business is also committed to using environmentally-friendly materials, with 100% sustainable fillings and the timber within divan bases sourced from managed forests that comply with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) and The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™). Achieving environmental management system compliance has also required auditing all suppliers about their own environmental processes and ensuring that every Hypnos employee is trained and aware of the EMS.

MATTRESS MAKER REBRANDS ONLINE PRESENCE Mattress brand Sleepeezee has announced the launch of its new proposition. Following the commission of extensive consumer research, mattress manufacturer, Sleepeezee has rebranded its website, social media and marketing assets, including its photography and digital advertising.

Growing management team Bettzeit, the company behind Emma Mattress, has announced the expansion of its management team to include Vanessa Vollrath, Gastón Tourn, Christian Portz, and Philipp Wagner.

Since 1924, Sleepeezee has been at the forefront of bed making, expertly handcrafting its beds and mattresses in Britain using a combination of luxury materials, innovative designs and traditional techniques.

People and organisation director Vanessa Vollrath, who began working at Bettzeit in the autumn of 2018, said it was about finding, winning, and developing new talent.

With a continued investment in developing and enlivening its service and product offering, the brand has unveiled its reimagined brand vision — making the customer the true hero of the Sleepeezee story.

Bettzeit chief marketing officer (CMO) Gastón Tourn arrived just in time to launch Emma’s ‘Don’t worry. Sleep happy.’ rebranding campaign. Bettzeit’s focus on expanding Emma’s and Dunlopillo’s brand awareness will primarily happen through Tourn and his team of 35.

Sleepeezee has simplified the purchasing journey with a modernised and inspirational website. The updated platform uses concise information with simplified terms, replacing commonly used but ‘confusing industry jargon that is unfamiliar to consumers’.

Since October 2018, chief operating officer Christian Portz has been responsible for logistics, procurement, production, quality and operational excellence at Bettzeit. He and his team of thirty-five ensure that everything from orders to first nights on mattresses happen as smoothly as possible.

The brand’s in-depth research revealed that consumers were often overwhelmed when shopping for a mattress, frustrated by the purchasing process and equipped with only a poor understanding of the standard terminology used. As buying a mattress is an infrequent purchase and a high investment, the main causes for concern amongst shoppers were ensuring that they found the right price, size and comfort.

Research and development director Philipp Wagner focuses on innovations that offer customers added value through products, technologies, and customer service.

w www.emma-mattress.co.uk

The company said: “Sleepeezee is the first mattress brand in the UK to launch a website of this kind and it’s this new approach that is set to revolutionise, educate and inspire the nation when buying a mattress.

NBF EXTENDS CODE OF PRACTICE COMPLIANCE The National Bed Federation (NBF) is to extend its Code of Practice to cover social and ethical compliance. In an historic vote at the recent Forum and Annual General Meeting — the association’s 107th — the membership voted unanimously to join the Fast Forward programme, which will involve all members being audited against a rigorous set of statutory compliance criteria. These include all aspects of employment, including eligibility to work, the national minimum wage, employment law, health and safety, mistreatment and access to remedy. It also covers business structure and tax. Tony Lisanti, NBF president, said: “We are all aware of the stories and rumours widely circulating about rogue businesses that do not behave in socially or ethical acceptable ways and which may even be breaking the law. Members and their customers — retailers — have been telling us that they would like to see our Code of Practice move beyond product compliance and we wanted to find a way of helping our membership distance themselves from such rogue businesses.” The NBF has selected to work with the Fast Forward programme as opposed to other, similar schemes, because of its emphasis on training and practical guidance, coupled with forensic auditing processes, consistency of approach and ability to share audit results with other scheme members. The NBF will now embark on an 18-month programme, introducing the scheme, conducting training and then audits, with a view to all members being audited by the end of 2020. The cost of the first round of audits will be covered by the NBF. In addition, NBF members also voted for the NBF to sign up to a new initiative coordinated by the Gangmasters & Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) — the Apparel and General Merchandise Public/Private Protocol — launched in November, which aims to bring together manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and enforcement authorities, including The Health and Safety Executive and HMRC, in an exchange of information and intelligence to support targeted enforcement activity and investigations.

Bed maker recalls baby mattress Mattress brand Dunlopillo has recalled one of its cot mattresses after Which? revealed safety concerns. The Baby Dunlopillo mattress is a new product and was tested by Which? in May, shortly after its launch, using the voluntary British Safety Standard BS EN 16890:2017. Dunlopillo confirmed to Cabinet Maker that the mattress does comply with the current, mandatory British Standards. However, following rigourous testing by Which?, two aspects of the product were highlighted as safety concerns. A report from Which? said: “Our tests indicate this mattress poses a potential suffocation risk if a young baby turns on to his or her front and is not able to turn back the other way. “This mattress also failed the shrinkage test. The cover shrank after two washes, which creates a possible injury risk as the contracted mattress could lead to an unsafe gap between the mattress and the cot where your child could get trapped.” In a statement, Dunlopillo said: “The rigorous testing by Which? revealed concerns with two aspects of the Baby Dunlopillo. Product safety is paramount to us and, as a precautionary measure, we have removed the Baby Dunlopillo from sale while we carry out our own investigations. Only 68 of the Baby Dunlopillo mattresses have been sold and retailers have been advised to refund customers who wish to return the product.”

Massive

Opportunity

Why are apprenticeships important? Apprenticeships for Sealy UK are particularly important as we move towards achieving world class standards across the factory by 2020/21 — they are enabling us to upskill our current workforce and plan ahead to fill skills gaps. For the furniture industry in particular, the opportunity to have apprentices come into the business and experience the factory environment and life on the shop floor is massive, and brings to life a whole world of work that is likely to previously have been unknown to them. What do you think are the current views and perceptions of apprenticeships? Many people will believe apprentices are for young, fresh-faced school leavers and are low paid but, at Sealy UK, the opposite is more likely to be true. Most of our apprentices are current and existing employees and, therefore, there is no negative impact on their pay. 14th June 2019 | 26

Jeff Booth, operations director at Sealy UK, talks about the importance of apprenticeships in a quick-fire Q&A. What are your thoughts on the skills gap within the furniture industry and how can this be improved? We need more support from local colleges to run apprenticeships with reduced numbers. When it comes to running a furniture or upholstery-based apprenticeship, in the local area we are the only such business that needs this offering, and we often find that colleges in the local area do not have the numbers of students interested in the course to support running it. More government support for specialist skills like these is needed. What would you say are the benefits of apprenticeships? Apprentices bring a fresh pair of eyes to the process — most of our new employee apprentices are in the customer services and sales areas of the business and they bring

new ideas. Often in this area we are able to offer permanent posts after completion of the apprenticeship. Engineering is another key area for us. Once a mechanical apprentice has learnt the skill of repairing a sewing machine, for example, they become invaluable and so again are very likely to become a permanent member of staff. What is a main cause for concern with the skills gap? I think that the overall education system is not promoting apprenticeships particularly well. It’s just not as appealing as going to university for many young people, so we’re seeing the best of middle-educated people, who would be ideal candidates for apprenticeships, going to university instead.

Sealy UK’s current apprentices: FRONT ROW (from left): Lewis Todd, John Rudd and Bill Coutts BACK ROW:Paul Tuck, Ross Benn, Ashton Neesham and Aidan Harrison

“THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE APPRENTICES COME INTO THE BUSINESS AND EXPERIENCE THE FACTORY ENVIRONMENT AND LIFE ON THE SHOP FLOOR IS MASSIVE.” How many apprentices are currently on the books at Sealy? And what positions are they? Currently we have five employees undertaking apprenticeships, four of whom were existing staff. We have chosen to upskill in the following areas: ILM Level 5, ILM level 3, Project Management Level 4, Accounting level 4 and Customer Service level 3. Within the next three to six months we have four further apprenticeships starting in the following areas; Engineering Level 2, Engineering Level 3, and 2 x ILM Level 3.

How has the apprenticeship programme at Sealy developed over the past few years? The biggest change to apprenticeships at Sealy over the past few years has been to expand the offering to current employees. This has allowed us to increase the employability of our existing staff and help them gain multiple new skills, helping them to develop their career at the company. Can you share any success stories? One member of staff started in 2010 as an electrical engineering apprentice — after completing his apprenticeship in 2014 he became a permanent engineer at Sealy UK. Last year he was given a temporary opportunity to step up as supervisor for the day shift maintenance function of the business and has, this last month, been confirmed in that post on a permanent basis following his success. Does Sealy have a training partner in sourcing apprentices? Not yet but it would be a preferred route if we could. Can you reveal any future plans Sealy may have in how to grow its apprenticeship scheme further? I anticipate that technology will eventually play a bigger part in bed manufacturing and this will require more technology-based apprenticeships to meet the needs of the business.

During the recent furniture production and interior design interzum trade fair, which concluded on 24th May in Cologne, one textile brand delivered a message to its audience on the importance of sustainability and the importance of ‘Going Green’.

Mattress ticking manufacturer, Boyteks, displayed a strong presence during the show and was rewarded for its efforts with a ‘High Product Quality’ interzum Award for its Go Green collection.

Tending towards sustainable resources and recyclable products are the most substantial steps required to be taken by us and we are very committed in helping to improve the environment. “Organic products, preferred due to health reasons at first, are now very important in order to protect the environment and help the future to be handed down to the next generations.” So what led to the Go Green ticking?

Boyteks’ sales and marketing manager, Mahmut Halit Kılıç, also gave a speech on sustainability during the event — a topic that its ‘very important’ for the business. Cabinet Maker caught up with area sales coordinator, Harun Gürkan Yiğit, to discuss just how important this aspect of the business truly is. “We only have one planet with limited resources,” says Harun. “That’s why we are strictly required to act in consideration of both the time we live in and the future generations. 14th June 2019 | 28

Harun explained the dangers associated with PFCs (perfluorocarbon) and antimony, with both used in many areas of textiles in high volumes. “These are detrimental to both human health and nature. These substances are widely and intensively used in many areas, ranging from fibres in textiles to finishing processes,” he said. “Antimony, while being used in the

production of textiles, it is also a heavy metal substance in nature. The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) classifies antimony as carcinogenic (having the potential to cause cancer). PFCs penetrate into the human body orally or through skin and it takes nine to 21 years for them to be removed. Considering that humans spend one-third of their lifetime in bed, fabrics used there are required not to contain these hazardous substances.” Boyteks embarked on a mission to create mattress ticking that does not include these harmful PFCs and antimony. The result was Go Green. “Go Green mattress ticking, developed by Boyteks with this awareness at the forefront of the design and manufacturing process, is an innovative and environmentalfriendly product that does not contain PFCs (perfluorocarbon) and antimony,” revealed Harun. “Go Green is also aiming to reduce the formation of hazardous wastes during

Hemp Another natural material Boyteks has included within its products is Hemp. Harmless to the body, breathable and natural — and a material that can be transformed to thousands of products and provide tens of thousands of benefits — hemp is now also used in mattress fabrics. Hemp stands out especially in terms of sustainability among natural fibres. Now part of the Boyteks product family, Hemp brings other features in addition to naturalness, as Harun explained: “Despite some negative impacts that people have on Nature, it continues to be very generous to people. Making the best possible choices for the future and using them is our responsibility. Sleep is more natural and peaceful than ever with this new fabric presented by Boyteks. The special thread structure of the Hemp mattress fabric produced from hemp fibres maintains these properties permanently.”

Boyteks has also delved deeper into helping people sleep with its stress-free Graphene mattress ticking technology. With stress levels varying from person to person, controlling stress — or offering a solution to help reduce it — has also been at the forefront of Boyteks’ technology innovations. Harun said: “Our sleep time is a period of renewal against the stresses of the day. This is only true if we have the right sleeping conditions. The stress we experience for various reasons in many different areas of our life has a negative impact on our bodies. “It deteriorates our quality of life and reduces our productivity. This accumulation of stress increases over time and we really do not have a lot of time to get rid of it. People expect fabrics to provide advantages other than just appearance and comfort. Graphene brings the technology of the new era to your bed with antistatic features.” So what is Graphene? Harun continued: “Graphene is described as a New Age material and creates the base for great ground-breaking work in many sectors of our day. It provides high efficiency in a number of different fields, from water impermeability to resilience, from Nature-friendly processes like purification to electronic devices produced with advanced technology. “Graphene also holds an important place in the field of the textile sector called smart fabrics. Threads made with Graphene now add a magical power to Boyteks mattress fabrics. The revolution created by carbon in different fields is now being experienced in products using Graphene.

“Graphene’s feature of being such a good conductor makes it possible to get rid of static electricity and the tension related to this. The anti-static effect alone, out of all the other features of Graphene, protects our bodies against the electrical build-up that can have a negative impact on our bodies during sleep. Plus, the strong bonds that Graphene achieves makes the fabric last longer.” With Boyteks driving its message of sustainability and human wellbeing, the ecoconscious consumer will certainly benefit... as will the planet.

perfect match Daniel Parsons, director of buying at bed retailer Dreams, talks about its new technology innovations in the form of Sleepmatch and its new adjustable bed frames.

Dreams, one of the UK’s most-recommended bed retailers, recently introduced its unique mattress matching technology, Sleepmatch, to all 195 of its UK stores. It means Dreams customers across the UK can pick their perfect mattress thanks to science and leading technology, paired with Dreams’ sleep ambassador expertise. The roll-out follows research commissioned by Dreams, which revealed more than two thirds (69%) of Brits are unhappy with the quality and quantity of their sleep, with as many as a third (30%) never waking up feeling refreshed. A crucial element in achieving a great night’s sleep is finding the mattress that’s right for you. Dreams said that its new Sleepmatch technology aims to take the stress out of 14th June 2019 | 30

what can sometimes be an overwhelming and confusing situation. Daniel Parsons, director of buying at Dreams, told Cabinet Maker: “Developed through decades of testing and scientific research, the system analyses 18 unique measurements, including height, weight, shoulder width and preferred sleeping position, and conducts 1,000 calculations, to pair customers with their perfect mattress. “Unlike other mattress matching systems, Dreams is the only one to be backed by science, supported by the findings of a largescale research study by a leading university in the US.” When customers visit a Dreams store, they will be invited to try the innovative Sleepmatch process. While lying on the Sleepmatch mattress, the technology will

capture key profile measurements before producing a Personal Sleep Profile, detailing their unique mattress requirements. Working in partnership with Dreams’ unique Comfort by Colour system, Dreams’ in-store colleagues will use the Sleepmatch findings to guide the customer to their ideal mattress; advising they choose the option that’s best for them. Daniel said: “Too many people in the UK are currently suffering from a poor night’s sleep — and a bad mattress can be the main culprit. Yet we know the process of picking a new mattress can be sometimes feel overwhelming and confusing. We don’t think it should be that way. “That’s why we’re so proud of our

Sleepmatch technology — the only system backed by science and specifically designed to make choosing the right mattress easier than ever. This nationwide rollout is a significant step towards helping more people to get a better night’s sleep.” Dreams’ Sleepmatch technology has already proved a huge success, having been introduced to its first Dreams store in November 2018. Globally the technology has resulted in more than 12 million profiles being built within the database. In partnership with this, Dreams has also announced the launch of its new Sleepmotion adjustable bed frames — the Sleepmotion 900i and the Sleepmotion 200i. The remote and app-controlled frames, which aim to transform the market and follow as a result of its consumer research, are now available to buy online and in all 195 of its UK stores. Daniel explained: “The state-of-the-art Sleepmotion bed frames offer customers a wide range of ergonomic positions to choose from to aid sleep. This also allows customers to watch TV, read a book or relax in bed in their most comfortable position. The frames are remote and app-controlled, via the exclusive Napp by Dreams sleep-tracking app, offering comfort at the touch of a button.” So what is the difference between the 900i and 200i? The Sleepmotion 900i is the ultimate adjustable bed, says Daniel, continuing: “Available in double and king-size, it includes

With an additional massage function, this bed frame offers the perfect place to relax.” As well as optimising comfort, the bed has practical features, including two USB charging points, Bluetooth speakers and underbed lighting. Moving on to the Sleepmotion 200i, this model offers a condensed version of the 900i — with two adjustable sections at the head and foot of the bed, adjustable height, and the option to purchase as a single, double, king or super king.

“Like the 900i, it has been designed to ease pressure points, improve circulation and offer comfort and support whatever position is chosen,” Daniel said. “The motion bed works as the perfect standalone frame; but for those seeking a more traditional look, the 200i can also be dropped into six of Dreams’ most popular bed frames — a pioneering move for the market.” Dreams’ Sleepmotion technology can also be used with a wide range of mattresses on sale at the retailer, including TEMPUR, Hyde & Sleep, TheraPur and Doze. And choosing the mattress for the frame is linked to its Sleepmatch technology, offering a complete service for consumers to find their perfect match. “Poor sleep is widespread in the UK today. Given there is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to getting a better night’s sleep, it’s important we offer beds to suit all customer lifestyles,” Daniel said. “That’s why we’ve developed our new Sleepmotion adjustable bed frames. By offering customers the tools to easily adjust their beds’ positioning, height and support, we’re empowering them to achieve the perfect conditions for a better night’s sleep.”

B E D S F E A T U R E |V I T A T A L A L A Y Ila Farshad, commercial director at Vita Talalay, a brand part of Radium Foam/Vita Group, explains the importance of creating products that are recyclable.

CLOSING CIRCLE the

Sustainability is proving to be a hot topic at present, and rightly so. Adopting, implementing and changing practices to adhere to more eco-conscious operations is something that every business needs to address — if they are not doing so already. From energy consumption, manufacturing techniques to materials, these all play a key part in becoming a more sustainable business.

“At the same time too many products are not recycled, which happens to 80% of mattresses. They end up in landfill or are incinerated. And even if they are brought to a recycling unit, parts are difficult to recycle. The components are glued or stapled together, which still makes those parts of the product waste.” Ila added that pocket-spring based mattresses have historically proved the

One area of this process is a renewed focus on the end of a product’s life. Instead of thinking what to do with a product when it finds its way on the road to landfill, the age is upon us to think about how a product can be recycled — even before a cog gets turned.

However, with Velda Resleep comes a solution that offers each component as a recyclable option if, and when, a mattress and divan nears the end of its first life.

Vita Talalay, a brand part of Radium Foam/Vita Group, is doing just that highlighting the new Velda Resleep sleep system in partnership with Veldeman Bedding.

Ila revealed: “A circular mattress will help extend the lifetime of a mattress and reduce waste if it is properly recycled. Circularity means that you are trying to “close the circle” when making a product. You have already thought about how to recycle it in the design stage so that it can be remade into new products.”

Ila Farshad, commercial director at Vita Talalay, spoke to Cabinet Maker on recycling issues and what they hope will be a game changer in the beds industry, and for the environment. “Too many products, amongst them mattresses, are made without thinking how to make them last longer. A mattress might just need a new cover or comfort layers to extend its life, or perhaps just needs a small repair. For hotels, for instance, this might decrease their sleep costs per night,” he said. 14th June 2019 | 32

hardest to recycle, due to the volume of springs wrapped inside a textile-based polypropylene pocket, the glue that is used to combine them together, and the gluing of layers together. With glues or staples also being involved, the time to separate each recyclable material was seen as a deterrent, resulting in more being sent to landfill.

Vita Talalay inside Velda Resleep

These collaborative efforts have been recognised and acknowledged. The jury from Red Dot Awards awarded Radium Foam’s Vita Talalay (part of the Vita Group) and Veldeman Bedding with an interzum ‘Best of the Best Award’ for its mattress that combines circularity with comfort.

“ONLY A COMMERCIALLY WELL-SELLING CIRCULAR MATTRESS, ONE THAT IS REALLY COMFORTABLE, WILL MAKE A LASTING

POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT .”

Speaking about the sleep system, Ila explained: “We are delighted to receive this award and thank the judging committee and interzum for recognising this innovation. “The Velda Resleep system, with Vita Talalay Origins®, is made completely free of glue or staples. Thus it can be completely disassembled into individual parts. That

makes separate collection of all monomaterials possible, which can then all be responsibly reused or recycled. This also avoids unnecessary waste and pollution. “The main reason why consumers buy a mattress is because of its comfort. Adding that it is recyclable is a massive plus. By opting for Vita Talalay, the healthy, responsible comfort material inside mattresses and pillows, comfort is assured. At the same time the bonus is that it is responsibly sourced, and that, because of the Cradle-to-Cradle Gold certification and the Eco-Institute certification, consumers can be sure there are no highly-problematic raw materials in the talalay latex. This makes it safe for soil and water but, even better still, safe for proper recycling, with all the other components selected for their recyclability.” Veldeman also echoed that comfort comes high on a consumer’s shopping list. “Being

able to offer comfort with a dismountable bed is a big plus for the consumer since it can be refurbished or repaired, as well as increasing the longevity of the bed. It is also a big plus for the environment since it has a circular design at its heart,” Valerie Veldeman said. Both businesses agree that the circular economy and sustainability are an increasingly important area for development, which has led to an exciting result. However, this is just the start for Vita Talalay, as Ila concluded: “There are several designed circular mattresses that compromise on comfort. But only a commercially wellselling circular mattress, one that is really comfortable, will make a lasting positive impact on the environment. Now we worked together with Veldeman, but we would like to team up with many others to get this industry to be more sustainable.”

Christian Notley — a master of cabinet making

Christian Notley, WorldSkills UK training manager at Chichester College, explains how he helps to train the world-class cabinet makers of the future in the UK?

World-class cabinet makers require worldclass training. As cabinet making training manager for WorldSkills UK and head of furniture studies at Chichester College, I use international standards to support the next generation of industry professionals.

programme that involves technical training and coaching in soft skills such as resilience and self-confidence.

Drawing on my experience of WorldSkills International competitions, I shape the curriculum to reflect the high standards on show at these exacting events. WorldSkills competitions are a fantastic opportunity for young Cabinet Makers to hone their skills and kick-start their careers — as well as providing an excellent source of international insight and innovation for the UK.

As we approach the next competition in the WorldSkills International calendar — WorldSkills Kazan 2019 — I’m training this year’s Team UK Cabinet Maker, Owen Aldous, for his international debut. He’ll be competing against 32 international competitors over four days. All competitors are given an identical project brief, put together by a team of international experts.

In training for the ‘Skills Olympics’

As his training manager, I’ll be allowed to advise Owen for 15 minutes at the beginning and end of each day. Between these sessions, he will have to make his own choices and use his highly-honed skills to create the project. Gold, silver and bronze medallists will be announced at the closing ceremony in front of an audience of 45,000 people. The UK is currently #1 in cabinet making in the WorldSkills nations and we’re confident Owen will help us retain this title.

Making it to WorldSkills International competitions is no easy feat. UK competitors must go through an intensive programme of training and regional competitions, culminating in the National Finals at WorldSkills UK LIVE, held at the NEC in Birmingham every November. Here, they compete alongside a range of other WorldSkills UK competitions, under the gaze of 70,000 visitors, over three days. High scorers are welcomed into Squad UK and compete against each other to be selected to represent their country as part of Team UK. This is followed by a rigorous training 14th June 2019 | 40

pool of techniques, materials and tools that stretch competitors and enhance their skills. International competitions are also a great opportunity to bring best practice back to the UK. I incorporate the rigorous WorldSkills International marking criteria into my day-today curriculum to help all students enhance their skills. In addition, seeing uncommon tools and methods in action — such as wooden Japanese planes — can help widen their understanding and help them hone their abilities. The UK boasts a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship, and WorldSkills nations are keen to visit and learn from us. Currently, Chichester College is hosting a former gold medallist from Taiwan, who will train with Owen for a month. This is a fantastic way for both students to learn and grow, sharing techniques and ways of working that may be new to each learner. Team France will also soon be visiting the UK to share their ways of working and we will explore how they can benefit Team UK and enhance the wider curriculum. Learning from the best I ensure our young competitors are ready to compete on a world stage, helping them learn from their peers and getting them ready for the pressures of international competition. Recently, Owen and I took part in the WorldSkills Global Skills Challenge in Melbourne. Australia. This competition saw 16 different countries competing in 24 different skills — an excellent training opportunity ahead of WorldSkills Kazan in August. Owen took part in a 22-hour competition to create a cabinet with two doors and a drawer in oak. The project was based on one of the short-listed projects for Worldskills Kazan in August, and while Owen will know the design of the three possible test projects he will not know which one has been selected until the day before the competition

From left, Christian Notley; George Callow, gold medallist in cabinet making in 2013; and Andrew Jones MP and it will have been changed by a minimum of 30%. He will not see this change until one hour before starting. He benefited from experiencing real competition pressure, whilst also getting to know his fellow international competitors and their unique methods of working. Every competitor approaches each task differently. It’s interesting to understand how international competitors plan their tasks and the techniques they choose to use for each element of the project. For example, there are many different ways to cut bridle joints — will a competitor choose to use a domino jointer to cut the socket or router or a spindle moulder? As a team, Owen and I will try out a range of methods and evaluate which Owen feels most comfortable with — one where he can produce the joint safely in the quickest time while maintaining the quality, as all joints are marked both before and after gluing. This information could be helpful to Team UK competitors and give them a much-needed edge in international competition. Leaving a legacy and facing the future Since getting involved in WorldSkills Competitions in 2011, I’ve been fortunate to build a highly-skilled, dedicated team of former competitors who are still involved with the programme. My assistant training manager, Edward Harringman, won gold at WorldSkills São Paolo 2015 and now helps train and support future competitors. Owen,

our current Team UK competitor, works for former competitor and gold medallist George Callow, creating an incredible support network as Owen begins his career. As well as creating an international network of professionals, WorldSkills International is dedicated to incorporating the latest innovations into competitions to keep them relevant to the world of work. WorldSkills Kazan will see the very first use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) elements in competition, as this is fast becoming an important skill for the industry. The event will also include the first ever ‘speed test’ during competition. Competitors will have 40 minutes to create an unknown element using hand-tools only — a true test of their skills. Through worldwide collaboration and mutual support, WorldSkills International competitions are a unique way of keeping our industry alive. Using this global pool of expertise, I’m bringing world-class expertise into UK skills programmes, such as including the Department for Education’s T-Level programme, making sure that future technical qualifications reflect international standards. By harnessing the WorldSkills intensive training methodology and world-class standards, we can keep the UK competitive on a global stage and shape the future of our industry.

Meet Paul

In the latest in our series of features on the people working in the furniture and beds industry, Cabinet Maker goes behind the scenes at Artistic Upholstery to meet despatch manager Paul Carruthers, who shares an insight into his role and his love, away from work, for art.

Can you describe your current job role and responsibilities? My first job was to cut canvasses, fetch and carry all the raw materials in for the upholsterers, and then progressed to keeping stock and ordering components. I can French polish legs and feet when required, fill cushions, hand slip stitch fringes and valances on to sofas and chairs, and am responsible for quality control and loading the vans — ensuring all goods are loaded and packed safely.

“PAUL HAS BEEN THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR FACTORY FOR 40 YEARS. HE IS BLESSED WITH A WONDERFUL PERSONA, ALWAYS WILLING TO GO THE EXTRA MILE, NOT ONLY IN HIS JOB BUT FOR HIS FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE SOMEONE SO LOYAL AND DEDICATED WITHIN OUR COMPANY.” — Iain Mitchell, director

What is the best thing about your role? I love applying the finishing touches to a job, and seeing the final article come together, whether it be sewing on a handmade fringe to give it that finishing touch, or filling the cushions and seeing the furniture at its finest before packing it. I also take great pleasure watching our skilled upholsterers and appreciating their patience and attention to detail — and helping the younger ones achieving something, it makes me smile. Can you describe your typical working day? I would say it is a very pleasant mixture of slip stitching, filling cushions, packing furniture and loading lorries. I am more than happy do whatever the company requires of me.

What would you say pulled you into wanting a career in the furniture industry? At the time I started there were two big local industries — lace and upholstery. I did go for an interview with a designer’s job in lace in mind, but landed on my feet in this one. What amazes me is that this small town where we are based, Long Eaton, is the central hub of the finest upholstery in England — and I’m proud to be a part of it! Can you share something that your coworkers may not know about you? I have a Diploma in Psionic Manipulation and Metaphysical Abilities and am furthering my knowledge of being a practising shaman. I want to develop a greater understanding of myself, the universe and help others in their path too.

What are your favourite things in life? I love being creative, getting the spark and energy to spur my creative juices and then turning them into reality. What are your future ambitions? I want to continue being creative and sell my artwork on a wider scale, whilst having time for helping people wanting to better themselves. Do you have any career highlights that spring to mind? I have so many stories! But one of my fondest is when Terry, our lorry driver, and I were loading up a Bedford van with a four-seater curved sofa and there was with snow on the tail board. »

and importance within the trade. It’s a fantastic achievement and long may it continue. If you weren’t working with furniture, what would you be doing? I would love to be producing and selling my art on a large scale, and be an artist who would help mentor others to find their way in life.

What’s your favourite piece of furniture you own and why? I think it has to be my dining table, because that’s where, as family and friends, we sit down and have great food and conversation — all around it.

And finally, if you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be? Dyslexic man loved! Why, I hear you ask? We are all needed and are all part of something in this universe.

What do you love about the furniture industry? I love the diversity of styles and the characters within the trade — not just the bosses, but everyone who makes up different companies.

LAST WORD DIDS MACDONALD OBE, MASTER OF THE FURNITURE MAKERS’ COMPANY What is One Step at a Time? Well, it’s something I have been thinking about for quite some time. Even though The Furniture Makers’ Company has been supporting the people who make this fantastic industry during times of unexpected financial need for more than 100 years, the welfare support provision is still one of the best kept secrets in the industry as many people don’t know where to access our help when they need it. Why? For many who have served our industry, traditional methods of engagement have disappeared, and digital exclusion can lead to loneliness and illness. But, it’s not all about retired people, quite the opposite. It’s about connecting grass-roots workers with access to support. None of us know when life is going to throw a curve ball. Who knows when fate will place us one day away from needing support? So, I want to remind the 338,000 people who make up the collective industry workforce — and all those others who have previously worked in the industry — aware of our charity.

“DIGITAL EXCLUSION CAN LEAD TO LONELINESS AND ILLNESS.“

lERCOL lBREASLEY lPEOPLE BEHIND THE PRODUCTS 14th June 2019 | 50

ensure that our word gets out to your coworkers. On doing so, your company can display a One Step Champion certificate with pride, demonstrating that your business cares for its most important resource — your staff. Look at some of the people we’ve helped... Take Ken, a passionate craftsman who had a long career with Multiyork who we helped. Ken said: “I felt so alone. The grant was a lifeline at an extremely hard time, and it’s such a relief to have the annuity. It’s great to have an organisation to turn to for help.” And Elisa, forced to retire early from her job as a sales assistant with national retailer John Lewis through ill-health. Elisa said: “I am so grateful for your care and most of all for the understanding of my situation, I feel well looked after.” The hand of friendship and kindness should never be underestimated, and we want to remind the industry that they have a friend in us. After all, who knows when we all might need a little help one day? Take that first step today by signing up! Go to www.furnituremakers.org.uk/ one-step-at-a-time/

A helping hand can make a real difference when life gets a bit of a struggle and that’s what we want to remind folks about through One Step at a Time. It’s not much to ask really. Will you help us achieve this by becoming a One Step Champion?

TO HAVE YOUR LAST WORD OR OPINION PLEASE CONTACT DAN@CABINET-MAKER.CO.UK

We want to reach at least 50,000 people within our industry, and tell them about our welfare message, during 2019/2020. Signing up is fast and it’s free — we just need you to commit to a few simple communications from our checklist to
