TRADE ASSOCIATION REPRESENTING THE INDUSTRY
Last week it was announced that the Treasury took back more than £300m of funds allocated to apprenticeships, despite small employers being turned away. With 90% of employers within the furniture and interiors sector being non-levy payers, it is very disappointing that excellent and often specialist training providers of essential skills are having their funding allocations cut to the extent that they can do little more for SMEs than complete existing apprentices on their programmes. Fear not though, as FIESTA has countered this invidious position for the furniture and interiors sector by setting up Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus, which includes an Apprentice Training Agency at its heart. By a quirk of the funding rules, the Apprentice Training Agency circumvents the impact of the clawback and ‘access to training’ rules, which means that SMEs can access whatever funded training for apprentices they like through the Skills Plus route. We have already highlighted the outstanding work FIESTA is doing and we will continue to shine a light on the importance of apprenticeships for the future of our industry. As hinted at last week, you will find important information on how the British Retail Consortium (BRC) is helping, and encouraging, businesses to explore the apprenticeship route in the retail sector within this week’s editorial. From apprentices to People Behind the Products, the second in the CM series of meeting the skilled workforce behind a company’s success. This time, Cabinet Maker meets Simon Spinks from Harrison Spinks.
Well known in the industry, we dived a little deeper into the creative mind behind the bed brand. If your business wants to take part in our ongoing series, get in touch and share your story! And speaking of sharing a story, this week also features a tale as old as time — not Beauty and the Beast — as Cabinet Maker explores the history, and there is so much of it, at upholstery heavyweight Parker Knoll, with the business currently celebrating its 150th anniversary. What better way to mark such an occasion you might ask? Other than featuring in the leading industry publication, Parker Knoll has also found time to launch an exclusive range, Collection 150. If that wasn’t enough to fill your weekly need for all things furniture, Cabinet Maker details an insight of the upcoming Spring Long Point exhibition as well as gaining some useful information from SATRA in regards to imports and doing your due diligence. Rewinding to the opening topic of apprenticeships, FIESTA’s chairman Gary Baker signs off by reaffirming the foundations the organisation has laid down for our sector to train new and existing colleagues in a range of qualifications, “It’s the start of a countrywide push to engage members to show the opportunities in funded training that we have developed.” We will certainly continue to push this message. New modular furniture company launches

KEY BEDDING FIGURE SADLY PASSES AWAY West Yorkshire-based bedding business GNG Group has confirmed that Peter Smith (pictured) has sadly passed away at the age of 79.
Finnish furniture startup Living Spaces Ltd has officially launched. The business, which was founded by husband and wife team Mika and Sanna Myllylä after five years of research and testing, is now taking pre-orders of a new set of modular soft elements that makes configuring a living room upholstered furniture as easy as working with a construction toy set. Furniture made of BiT elements can be completely resized, reformed and even change colour to meet various environments, number of guests or intended event. Sanna Myllylä, polytechnic designer, explained: “Imagine living room furniture capable of transforming into a larger number of seats for extra guests, then be reshaped for a gaming session amongst teenagers, as a castle for the younger children’s play centre and as multiple beds for overnight guests. That’s a multifunctionality one can expect from BiT elements.” BiT represents a minimalistic Scandinavian design but the functionality gives nearly infinite ways to construct furniture. “Our daughter, Taika, was born half a year after research was started. Above all, we wanted to make BiT as safe as possible for the kids. She once bumped her head on our previous sofa’s arm. We didn’t want that to happen again. Bouncing on a sofa is just what kids do,” Mika recalls. Furniture constructed of BiT element doesn’t contain any glue, paints, solvents, lacquers or even wood. All pieces are frameless for added child safety and strong magnets keep pieces together. Fully automated and fast connectors are cast inside the soft foam. Pieces are manufactured in Poland, whilst magnets are delivered from China, with BiT game controller adapters made in Finland. BiT soft furniture elements can be pre-ordered from Indiegogo crowdfunding platform. Orders will be delivered worldwide in October 2019 by Amazon.

His dedication and sense of fun left an indelible mark on this business, even after his retirement he was often involved. “Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and the business will very much miss him. Showcasing two brand-new Flock fabric designs on ercol’s award-winning Marino chair, the range has been launched at independent furniture retailer Heals this month. Best known for its range of bright, bold and eclectic textiles, Flock specialises in discovering and nurturing the best of British design. Working with an exciting mix of artists, designers and recent graduates, the brand’s founder and creative director, Jenny Wingfield, has shaped a beautiful and diverse collection of fabrics for interiors. For this latest collaboration, ercol’s in-house design team handpicked two new fabric designs from Flock artist, Rachel Parker, to make a statement on the Marino chair. Available in two different colours, forest green and indigo, the chairs are hand-finished to complement the tones of each fabric. Rachel Galbraith, creative director at ercol, comments: “Flock’s bold and colourful designs, along with its passion for nurturing British talent, immediately captured our imagination. The sharp geometric shapes featured in both the Atlas and Kiso fabrics contrast beautifully with the soft curves of the Marino chair.” Jenny Wingfield, creative director at Flock, adds: “ercol represent everything we love about great design, effortless elegance and meticulous simplicity. “The opportunity to work alongside them on the beautiful Marino chair collaboration has been incredible and we couldn’t have hoped for a better canvas to present our two new patterns.”

Furniture and carpet stores see improved March Consumer spending increased during March, with growth picking up as Brits were encouraged by the milder weather. Data from Barclaycard shows that overall consumer spending rose 3.1%, with essential expenditure increasing modestly by 2.2%. Non-essential spending, meanwhile, saw year-on-year growth of 3.4%. These figures are particularly buoyant because they are compared with March last year, when spending was heavily impacted by severe weather conditions caused by the ‘Beast From The East’. Taking a closer look at the categories, the data revealed that expenditure in furniture stores increased 5.2% against the same month last year. Floorcovering stores also experienced a growth during March, up by 4.1%. However, department store spending fell by 4.7% as the retail sector continues to face challenges, whilst DIY stores saw an uplift of 10.3%. Esme Harwood, director at Barclaycard, said: “In contrast to the extreme weather conditions experienced last year, a milder March resulted in an uplift in spending, with consumers dining out and making the most of the welcome sunshine. “Despite this, underlying sentiment is cautious. March was characterised by ongoing uncertainty around Brexit, with consumers concerned about an impact on food prices and supplies. In light of this, consumer confidence in the UK economy is the lowest it’s been since we began recording this data.”

The Insolvency Service stated that Tahir Mahmood Zaman failed to ensure that his company, YEY Group Ltd, maintained and preserved adequate accounting records after more than £588,000 went missing. Due to the inadequate accounting records for the period between 3rd August, 2015 and 17th August, 2017, the date of YEY Group’s liquidation, which left a VAT bill of £300,000, it was not possible to determine several amounts of cash, sales invoices and payments. The order of disqualification came into force on 15th March. Dewsbury-based Mr Zaman was registered to more than 20 businesses with Companies House under three different names — Tahir Zaman, Tahir Mahmood Zaman and Taheer Mahmood Zaman. These businesses were spread across a range of industries including property, retail and furniture manufacturing, with the latter including such companies as Kozee Sleep, Bed Express and Joseph International. Mr Zaman acted as managing director at his brother-in-law Mohammed Rafiq’s bed business, Kozee Sleep, with the company collapsing after Mr Rafiq was later jailed for human trafficking offences. However, it is understood that Kozee’s property portfolio was transferred to Mr Zaman ahead of closing.

After demonstrating a commitment to the AIS buying group, Myer’s was also in the privileged seven out of 25 bed suppliers to win the sought-after Gold Standard 2019 Award. Paul Little, sales and marketing director at Steinhoff UK Beds, said: “We’re over the moon to win the Gold Standard Award 2019 from AIS as well as be voted third best bed supplier by its members. Mr Zaman was previously fined £18,000 for fire safety breaches at his Joseph International bed firm, which also collapsed owing more than £1m to creditors. Detailed as part of the sentencing, The Insolvency Service said £168,490 was withdrawn from YEY Group’s accounts from 3rd August, 2015 onwards, with no invoices or records. There were also unaccounted payments totalling £230,000 made to Mr Zaman between November 2016 and February 2017, and a further £190,000 to connected individuals or companies. The Insolvency Service was also unable to determine the reasons for the failure of YEY Group, as well as establishing the accuracy of the statement of affairs lodged at liquidation and the correct position of the assets and liabilities of the company. It is understood that some of the companies Mr Zaman was still involved with ahead of the banning order, including Express Beds, appear to have been taken over by his family.

Parker Knoll milestone, 1869-2019 Iconic British upholstery brand Parker Knoll celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The business reflects on its rich history with Cabinet Maker.
In 2019, iconic British sofa and chair brand Parker Knoll celebrates 150 years at the vanguard of the design and manufacture of furniture. The story of Parker Knoll is a thoroughly British tale. From humble beginnings in a simple workshop in London, the Parker Knoll business has grown and developed throughout its incredible 150-year history, to establish itself as a leader in its field. In 1869, the brand that would later become Parker Knoll was founded by Frederick Parker, the son of a Shoreditch-born cabinet maker. With furniture design in his blood, Frederick took pride in designing and developing the finest furniture, using the best of British craftsmanship and manufacturing techniques. He soon established himself as a reputable supplier, creating furniture for the Victorian 26th April 2019 | 10
gentry and London’s leading retailers. The Parker brand expanded with three of his seven sons joining the business as innovators and inventors. The brand’s first reclining chair — a push back ottoman recliner — was launched during the 1890s and was a design that shaped the direction of the brand. The founding principles of craftsmanship, design and innovation remain at the core of the business today, as Parker Knoll continues to redefine the industry with revolutionary sofas and chairs. In 1921, Parker’s sons met Willi Knoll, who had served as a fighter pilot in WW1. Struck by the lack of comfort and support offered by his seat, he was inspired to develop a revolutionary coiled steel wire spring system that could be strung across the seat and back of a chair to allow it to flex. This system remains present in many of Parker Knoll’s

Meet Simon
How long have you been in your current role? I became managing director of the company when I was 25, but my family has been running the company for five generations. There are currently three Spinks in the business: myself, my father, Peter, who is on the board of directors, and my son, Dan, who is a buyer. What is the best thing about your role? Because we’re a family business, we’ve had the freedom to re-invest in innovation and drive change in areas that we believe in. This has allowed us to build a really unique business — we make almost all the components that go in to our beds, from 26th April 2019 | 14
drawing the wire to make the springs, to growing natural mattress fillings on our 300acre farm. We even make the machines that make the springs. We own our supply chain so we can constantly make changes to our processes and components to improve our products and how we make them. What is the most challenging? The fact that we’re so vertically integrated means that we have to become specialists in many fields — and literally ‘fields’. We have a farm, a forest, a manufacturing facility and an R&D team that makes the machines that make our components, so we need expertise across so many different areas. It’s challenging but also exciting and everchanging. Can you describe your typical working day? No two days are the same and in a family

Simon Spinks inspects a spring at the company’s factory
“I’D SEEN A SPRING-WITHIN-A-SPRING USED IN CARS AND WONDERED IF THAT TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY COULD BE USED IN A MATTRESS.”
— Simon Spinks, (right) managing director of Harrison Spinks
out of bed in the morning It’s a terrible pun but it puts a ‘spring’ in my step. What would you say pulled you into wanting a career in the furnishing industry? Because Harrison Spinks is a family business, bedmaking is in our blood. I began painting bed legs at Harrison Spinks when I was 11 years-old and have always had a passion for manufacturing beds. I officially started working at Harrison Spinks full-time in 1989 and became managing director when I was 25. When I started working at Harrison Spinks full-time I started to see parallels with spring technology and car mechanics (my other passion), which really piqued my interest and that’s where my passion for invention and Santiago
innovation started. What are your favourite things in life? My biggest achievement outside of the business is bringing up my family. My son, Dan (24), is currently a buyer within the business and my daughter, Emily (23), is a very talented artist. I also love cars; tinkering with them and driving them. In 2016, I drove a 1969 Ford Escort from Peking to Paris in the Endurance Rally. My interest in cars sparked the inspiration for the Revolution spring system — I’d seen a spring-within-a-spring be used in cars to stop a valve bounce and wondered if that type of technology could be used in a mattress.
What are your future ambitions? We want to change the way the world sleeps. The team is working towards building a bed that can be recycled in its entirety at the end of its life —this is a complex challenge that involves removing all foam and chemicals from the product and replacing them with eco-friendly, natural alternatives. Currently about 90 per cent of the mattress can be recycled. We have started to weave our own fabric that is naturally fire retardant without chemicals, and we have developed pockets for our springs that are welded together, removing the need for glue. Do you have any career highlights that spring to mind? The invention of the Revolution Spring System and the subsequent licensing of the technology certainly boosted our business and being awarded Millennium Product status by the design council was the icing on the cake. Buying Hornington Manor farm in 2009 was a risky move but being able to grow our own filling materials for the mattresses has allowed for us to make meaningful reductions to our CO2 emissons and is well received by customers and consumers alike. Being awarded four Queen’s Awards for Enterprise is another highlight — meeting the Queen in 2013 after we won two awards was a huge honour and it was a special moment for the business. Winning two again in 2018 was incredible. We currently hold two Queen’s Awards, which we think is unique in our sector. » 26th April 2019 | 15

Did you know that Cabinet Maker has been established since 1880? How long have you been reading the magazine? I started working full-time in the industry in 1989 so probably for around 30 years now! There have been copies at the factory for as long as I remember. Harrison Spinks was established 40 years before Cabinet Maker so we might be one of your longest-standing readers!

What could be improved to make the industry better in your opinion? It would be great to see more companies have a greater focus on sustainability and take more responsibility for what happens to their products at the end of their useful lives. Support for retailers is important too — they are really key in helping customers find the right mattress so they deserve our support.

We’re working to reduce wastage through every part of our operations — from recycling left over materials at British Steel and using waste hemp as biofuel as well as looking at the products we use in the manufacture of our products to make sure they are recyclable at the end of their lives.

What do you love about the furnishing industry? The people. We are very fortunate to work within an industry where competitors and customers alike are considered an extended family. This is a unique trait and long may it continue. We work closely with the Furniture Makers charity to encourage young people into manufacturing and furniture. We recently had a large group of students visit the factory to see first-hand what we do.

All upholstered domestic furniture sold in the UK must meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010), explains Andrew Munns from SATRA.
TOP of imports
Imported furniture and due diligence Retailers who sell imported upholstery should ask their suppliers for documentation that proves that the furniture they intend to display and sell is compliant with these regulations. When a retailer imports furniture it becomes the ‘first supplier’ within the meaning of the regulations and it is the retailer’s responsibility to ensure the furniture complies. Compliance should never be assumed. Evidence in the form of test reports or certificates for each batch of products should be obtained. The UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended) are generally regarded as the most severe in the world. Indeed, in many countries there are no flammability requirements of any sort in place. Consequently, foreign producers may not be fully familiar with UK furniture safety specifications. In fact, these UK regulations demand foam formulations that are, in many instances, not used or even produced in some countries. Test reports offered by the supplier should contain the relevant test data. Only results from the tests specified in the schedules to the regulations, which are based on past issues of BS 5852, are of any value. SATRA recommends that retailers ask to see test reports that are produced by an independent laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 –
‘General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories’.
testing has been completed. If they do, further testing is required.
For due diligence purposes, retailers should carry out spot checks on materials to verify the compliance of imported items. Most importantly, assurances should be provided that the materials tested are representative of those used in the furniture. If the materials are found to be different, the reports are worthless. If there is any doubt, the retailer should request additional tests. We also advise that any dates on the test report are checked thoroughly.
Trade furniture buyers should insist on being supplied with test reports and data for all parts of the furniture, for example covers, dust covers, platform cloths, interliners where appropriate, and every foam and non-foam filling.
Retailers are advised to check for test results that relate to precise batches of materials and subsequent batches or single items of furniture that are shipped to the UK. If the furniture is made outside the UK, the manufacturer is not legally responsible for compliance. However, if it has a UK-based agent or office, the enforcement authorities may expect the UK-based operation or branch to be responsible for demonstrating compliance. In all cases, retailers have a responsibility to offer only compliant furniture to their customers. Retailers who import upholstered furniture should ensure that the specifications of products do not vary after
Tests relevant for domestic upholstered chairs and sofas Description of furniture component and type of test required

Schedule 1 Part I

Schedule 4 Part I
Non-visible covers including platform cloth and dust cover material Interliner
Schedule 5 Part III and Schedule 4 Part II Schedule 3
The above table lists the main tests required under UK regulations. Other tests may be needed to demonstrate compliance, depending upon materials used in the furniture. The schedules specify various, dated, British Standard test methods, which should be referred to for further information.
To summarise, test reports will help the retailer demonstrate that its products are truly compliant. Secondly, they provide a basis for a defence of due diligence should a Trading Standards officer procure an item, test it and find it does not comply. Repeat testing of materials will reinforce the retailer’s argument that it has done all it can to ensure that only compliant furniture was displayed or supplied. Seminar on fire safety requirements for seating, upholstery and beds SATRA is running flammability seminars to provide those in the furniture industry with a full understanding of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations for domestic and contract markets for furniture, upholstery and bedding. Taking place at SATRA’s offices in Kettering, the day seminar will go through the flammability requirements for furniture and any materials that are used, such as covers, interliners, foams and other fillings. The seminar dates are 30th May, 29th August and 14th November. Delegates will learn about the tests conducted and see demonstrations in SATRA’s flammability lab to show first-hand what requirements are needed for a foam or filling to pass the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations. This seminar will be beneficial to furniture and material manufacturers, suppliers and retailers to understand exactly what their duties and responsibilities are. New businesses and recentlyappointed staff will find the seminar particularly beneficial to ensure they have a solid grounding of the flammability requirements, the reading of test reports and an understanding of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations. The cost is £245 exc VAT. To find out more about furniture testing and to book on the seminar, email furniture@satra.com or call +44 1536 410000.

Excitement is growing for the upcoming Spring Long Point exhibition from the Long Eaton Guild. As in previous years, the show promises to be the place to be to see the latest designs from some of the best furniture makers in the UK. Cabinet Maker takes you through a sneak preview of some of the highlights. The Spring Long Point exhibition, which takes place from 29th April to 1st May, is spread across seven locations in Long Eaton, long-recognised as the heartland of the UK furniture manufacturing industry. It is firmly established as an event that attracts buyers from all across the UK. And it’s no wonder, judging from some of the highlights that have been shared with us. The new range Harrison, from G Plan (Turret D, Second Floor, Harrington Mill, Leopold Street), will be showcased at Long Point. G Plan tells us that the luxury cushioning of Harrison “offers an indulgent comfort, while the multiple sofa sizes ensure it is the perfect fit in any home”. Its sleek, contemporary arm styling is finished with a choice of show wood foot on static models, whilst recliners are available in a choice of manual or power options. Meanwhile, award-winning bedroom manufacturer, Wiemann, will be participating in Spring Long Point from its permanent 26th April 2019 | 18
space at Harrington Mill. Wiemann’s showroom, on the first floor, will have a selection of its latest bedroom collections and innovations on show, ranging from entry level to top-quality VIP and semi-solid. Taking centre stage will be award-winning Monaco, Misura, Kansas and Brussels. Simon Hewitt, managing director of Wiemann’s UK agent, Litmus Furniture, tells Cabinet Maker: “The team and I are excited to be participating in the Spring Long Point exhibition, building on our recent show success. It presents us with another opportunity to showcase our stylish design and practical features, plus demonstrate the wide variety of products that we offer to retailers and consumers.” Also at the iconic Harrington Mill, Siren Furniture is a design house, importer and wholesaler of upholstered sofas and sofabeds to the UK market. For nearly 20 years, Siren has been supplying furniture to some of the most-respected

As many will already know, the company has a broad portfolio of products covering all segments within the upholstered furniture market, which have been designed specifically for the independent furniture market and are available on a made-to-order basis. Of particular interest to visitors will be the Finn range. It’s described as a stylish and versatile sofa range that “draws you in with its pillow arm, elegant French seams and statement back cushions”.

Renowned for quality and service, the team at David Knight are proud to say that items are handmade in the UK by time-served craftsmen. At this year’s Spring Long Point, Parker Knoll is continuing its 150 years celebrations with the relaunch of the famous Norton Recliner. To support this, a small capsule collection of contemporary lifestyle fabrics are being introduced, taking inspiration from Italian styling and our mid-century marketing references. Parker Knoll will also be showcasing its latest collection, Collection 150, at its dedicated showroom in Turret C, Floor 3 of Harrington Mills. Meanwhile, Collins & Hayes will be launching a new seasonal Spring/Summer fabric Edit: Sicilia. The fabrics ranges from the warm autumnal tones launched last season to the deeper more summer-led looks, in a selection of viscose cotton linens and flat woven accents from its partner mills across Italy and Belgium. Westbridge promises to showcase the Coach House — a new and exciting fabric story, perfect for the current gold trend coming through this season. Also on show will be Petra, an NEC winner, described as “a beautiful and sophisticated leather/fabric model,” which is available in both chocolate and tan hides with an eclectic fabric mix. Artistic Upholstery Limited (Harrington Mills and Bridge Street, NG10 4QQ) is a proud family-run firm that will be showcasing the rather elegant and stylish Westfield bespoke sofa, which features polished chrome arms. Available in any size, it’s another in the long line of fine designs from Artistic Upholstery, which prides itself on handmaking its sofas using modern methods but with traditional skills and experience. Refined elegance is the hallmark of work from Steed and Peter Guild, and it tantalisingly says it will be revealing new models in “exciting” new fabrics. It’s worth noting though that due to building work in the Long Eaton showroom, it will now be taking some space in the Harrington Mill during the show. Following on from a successful launch at the January Furniture Show, Iain James Furniture ((Harrington Mills and Bridge Street) will again be displaying pieces from the innovative new Rosewood collection. This striking new range offers an eclectic mix of simplistic elegance, featuring delicate inlays to legs, tops and drawers. Apprenticeships Retailers for
Cabinet Maker gains an insight into how the British Retail Consortium (BRC) is helping retailers make the most of apprenticeships. The retail industry is going through a period of unprecedented and rapid change, driven by changes in technology, new channels to market and increased customer expectations. In order to help organisations succeed, management and leaders in the retail industry need to be skilled to meet these unique challenges. As the UK’s largest private sector employer, the retail industry is committed to equipping its colleagues with skills for the future. However, many retailers have struggled to find high-quality courses relevant to the retail industry to maximise their return on the Apprenticeship Levy. That’s why the British Retail Consortium (BRC) have partnered with Leeds Business School, part of Leeds Beckett University, and Corndel to bring apprenticeships that will equip students with the blend of industry knowledge, and practical, relevant experience they will need to capitalise on the opportunities created by a dynamic retail industry. Built on the BRC Future Retail Careers Framework and developed with leading representatives from the industry, their apprenticeship programmes incorporate exclusive BRC retail industry insights, perspectives and content. They understand the needs of an industry with a large, dynamic and often part-time workforce, and offer retailers relevant, accessible management apprenticeships tailored specifically to the retail industry. The BRC Future Retail Careers Framework aims to help those working in retail understand and build the skills and capabilities needed for future retail careers. Working with leading representatives of the industry, the BRC has identified six areas where future retail careers will be focused. These describe a future workforce that is dynamic, highly skilled and motivated, and a retail industry that can attract and retain the brightest and best people.
The super six Customer: Interactions and support This is retail’s frontline workforce, embracing
technology to create a world-leading experience for customers. Customer: Future experience Keeping consumer behaviours and habits at the forefront of customer trends. Products: Supplier to customer Bringing high-quality goods to consumers in the right place, at the right time, at the right price. Products: Research and development Innovating through design, research and procurement. Future: Business solutions Applying new business thinking to current retail practices. Future: Retail and community Ensuring retail has a lasting role at the heart of the communities it serves.
The courses The BRC Retail Leadership and Management Level 5 Apprenticeship develops the critical knowledge and skills behaviours needed by senior managers. The programme develops highly-trained effective managers who think critically about business challenges and nurture high-performing teams. Underpinned by one-to-one executive coaching, the programme develops strategic management and leadership skills, in addition to self-awareness and communication skills. The Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship (Retail) provides current and aspiring managers with relevant knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of effective management, in the context of the challenges and opportunities facing retailers at a time of rapid change. Participants will work on live company projects throughout the programme and benefit from a flexible learning model, including face-to-face and online teaching, resources of Leeds Business School and expertise of the BRC.
The reasons The BRC have highlighted 12 key reasons to choose its apprenticeship programme. These are: Understanding the industry They have listened to BRC members and worked with apprenticeship providers to design courses that address specific challenges facing retailers. Hand-picked provider partners They offer the best quality and the flexibility that they know retailers need. Careers framework Developed with leading representatives from the industry, the courses are tailored around six key areas highlighted above.
Helen Dickinson, OBE, (above) chief executive at the BRC, said: “Many retailers have found the Apprenticeship Levy system too inflexible to fund training and skills development, or have struggled to find courses relevant to the retail industry. In doing so, they have often had to forgo their apprenticeship levy funding altogether. This brochure will provide you with all the information you need to evaluate how these apprenticeships can support your company’s objectives. Our team is ready to assist you as you take the next step.” For more information about the BRC apprenticeship programmes, download the brochure at www.brc.org.uk/brc-learning Unique content Exclusive BRC retail industry insights, perspectives and content places learning within a retail context to ensure participants can apply it in their jobs. Specially selected and adapted modules They have selected modules that form a bespoke retail pathway. Flexible delivery They understand the challenges of a fast-moving retail environment and incorporate flexible scheduling of the programmes to fit around your business needs. Case studies Case studies are drawn from the BRC membership to bring to life the real challenges facing today’s retailers. Innovative practice The course will showcase innovative practice from across the industry. Expert speakers Using their extensive network within the retail industry they will help provide speakers who are right at the forefront of retail today. Events Apprentices will have access to BRC Events and Webinars on the hot topics that matter to retailers. Workshops They work with you to co-design face-to-face workshops and online learning so they are contextualised for your business. Professional coaching Coaches and tutors are integrated into the induction process so they are fully briefed on your business priorities and expectations.

LAST WORD REBECCA SNOWDEN, INTERIOR STYLE ADVISOR AT FURNITURE CHOICE With its bold colour scheme, punchy prints and eclectic decor, Tropical Crush is a great way to introduce fun, stylish elements of summer into your home and to celebrate the changing seasons.
“COLOUR TAKES THE TROPICALMEETS-MAXIMALISM APPROACH TO NEW HEIGHTS.“
There are two ways you could showcase this tropical look in the home: first, an all-out maximalist approach, and second, an elegant minimalist take. Play with prints, colours and patterns for a maximalist approach For a huge dose of personality, a maximalist take on the tropical trend is the way to go. With vibrant hues, nature-inspired motifs, and colourful prints all part of the mix, the trick here is in layering them all together. The maximalist approach is a fun, chic way to introduce the tropical look in key areas of the home such as the living room or even the bedroom. It all begins with a good centrepiece: a cosy grey sofa, or dark fabric bed is a solid, comforting anchor to add and build on. And from there, anything’s possible! To really celebrate this trend, animal-inspired decor and art are a fun way to go, and other tropical elements such as palm prints and lush indoor plants also up the ante. Colour also takes the tropical-meetsmaximalism approach to new heights by adding a cheerful boost to the space. Whether it’s through brightly-hued cushions and throws or colour-blocking the walls, opting for striking colour combinations — such as Pantone’s Living Coral with teal — really embraces the tropical aesthetic and creates a strong, stylish contrast.
MILAN REVIEW GALLERY DIRECT COMPONENTS 26th April 2019 | 26
Opt for a light, breezy palette for relaxed, minimalist style Tropical’s calmer, natural qualities can also be embraced through a more minimalist aesthetic. This take on tropical works in all parts of the home, all the way from the living area to dining room, thanks to its welcoming, soothing aesthetic. Opt for airy hues like off-whites and cream for a breezy, well-lit interior. This creates a chic backdrop for a comfy grey velvet sofa, or even a rich green settee for a luxe boost. Soften the look with various textures such as cushions, rugs, and of course, natural greenery to keep in with the tropical theme. Green’s lighter tones can also double as a stylish neutral for the walls. Sage is still a trending colour for the home, and its tranquil vibes fit right into a minimalist, tropical-inspired space. Its soothing, warm undertones offer a subtle pop of colour, and lends a welcoming feel to rooms like the dining area. Lighter furniture will contrast with this versatile hue — a white dining set stands out nicely as a strong focal point. Natural textures are go-to elements for this look, so slip in materials like rattan and wood.
