MANAGING DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS Pat Ward— Managing Director

T

W

elcome to the mid-year issue of Track & Wheel magazine. I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Managing Director of CablePrice, having taken over from Shigeru Takatori. I am excited to bring a local flavour and perspective to the role, and am very familiar with the nuances of the business, its people and customers after spending almost 10 years as CablePrice’s General Manager – Finance & Administration, and five years prior to that working as a consultant to the company. Speaking of customers, I know we are lucky at CablePrice to deal with some really loyal people who love our products. Because of this we’ve developed some close personal relationships with businesses of all sizes and scales. Customer service is at the heart of everything we do and will continue to be a significant focus for our team from the top down. At CablePrice we offer exclusive, high quality brands in Hitachi, Scania and John Deere. However, as customers, you need to be assured that we are doing more than simply selling you a product. We have great people who work hard to deliver excellence in the sales, back up and support process. And we plan to take our service offering to even greater heights to ensure we provide a total wrap-around solution to our customers, partnering with them through the life of their purchase. One of the ways we will achieve this is through the introduction of a new fleet management system. This will enable us to be even more responsive and proactive, advising our customers when their machine is due for a service, and using our high-tech diagnostics reporting to advise customers that there may be a problem with their product before they even know it themselves. It’s about making life easier for our customers so they can keep focused on what they do best. Of course we understand there is no such thing as the perfect company or product, and as the new Managing Director, I urge any customers who feel they haven’t received optimum service from CablePrice to pick up the phone and talk to someone on our executive management team.We are always open to feedback and welcome the opportunity 4

No.1 NEW ZEALAND WINS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!

TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS

to rectify any issues should they arise, or make improvements where needed. CablePrice has had an encouraging start to 2016, although like many sectors, we share the pain of the low milk price at the farm gate. Despite the challenges I believe the New Zealand economy remains relatively promising when we compare it to what is happening in the rest of the world. The buoyant construction sectors in Auckland and Christchurch continue to be a significant driver for growth. We look forward to having another strong presence at National Fieldays®, which will be held 15-18 June at Mystery Creek, Hamilton. Once again we will showcase a large range of equipment from Hitachi and John Deere and commercial vehicles from Scania. We will demonstrate the exciting new Hitachi ZX5b 20 tonne excavator, with its popular joystick controls, improved engine performance and excellent fuel efficiency. A new John Deere grader should be another popular highlight at the CablePrice stand. Our products will be supported at the event by our highly experienced sales force, who can answer any questions you may have. We also welcome any experienced, top-notch technicians interested in working for CablePrice to visit us at National Fieldays® and have a chat.

We understand some potential truckbuying customers immediately discount the European Scania brand due to the perception it is significantly more costly to buy than other brands. However I would like to encourage anyone considering the purchase of a new truck to talk to our team about the cost benefits over the lifetime of the vehicle, which can be considerable when it comes to overall long-term productivity, reliability, and years of service. This is particularly true if a truck requires extra engineering work such as the addition of a tipper, or conversion to a curtain sider, as these items have to be replaced every time a new truck is purchased. Congratulations to our Christchurch branch team of technicians who won the global Scania Top Team competition after taking out the New Zealand and Oceana titles. It is a fantastic achievement and we are extremely proud of your efforts. Our Whangarei branch team also delivered an incredible result, finishing second in the national competition behind the Christchurch team. These results are a testament to the top quality technicians we attract and retain at CablePrice. As your new Managing Director, I would like to thank our entire team of staff at CablePrice for their hard work and dedication, and all of our customers for their continued support. 

he CablePrice Christchurch Shakers have officially been crowned the Scania Top Team world champions, having taken out the title in Sweden in December 2015. Our boys were up against fierce competition including Brazil, UK (KelTruck branch), and of course Australia who were the front runners in the lead-up to the competition; having previously taken out the title in both 2011 and 2013. Over 8000 technicians from around the globe entered the bi-annual event with the grand final showcasing the most skilled teams of Scania technicians and parts personnel in the world. The Top Team championship is founded on Scania’s approach to increasing the value of its service offerings by providing motivation and training development to its service personnel. For the Christchurch Shakers, the Top Team journey started at the beginning of 2015 with the Shakers competing and winning against eight other CablePrice branches around New Zealand. From there, they flew to China to compete against five other countries in the regional finals hosted in Guangzhou, China. Despite the oppressive heat and tough

competing conditions, the Shakers came out on top, qualifying them and runner-up; Singapore’s Team Kinetic in the Sweden grand final. Twelve countries competed in the final competition which involved six station rounds consisting of one theory and five practical-based stations. This determined which four teams would go through to the grand final knock-out challenge while the other eight teams were eliminated. Brazil, UK, Australia and New Zealand made up the final four competing in the final elimination round, all in front of a studio audience and streamed live on YouTube. The start of the knockout round involved theory questions, followed by two practical assessments; wiring up a cable harness and working on a Scania industrial engine. These challenges saw Australia and Brazil eliminated, leaving New Zealand and the UK to face off in the last challenge. The final task for the Shakers was to build a brain (create a user function for the trucks electronic system) and then execute that system on a truck, with the first team to successfully activate the system winning the competition. At this point, the UK team was ahead on points which awarded them a 15-second

lead start time over the Shakers. However the penalty had no effect on the Kiwis, who blew their opponents out of the water by successfully activating the truck in a few minutes, while the Brits were still only half-way through the task. After coming second to Australia in the 2013 final and having never won before, to take out the title this time round was a huge feat for the boys. Ross Wallace, CablePrice National Training Manager says he was extremely proud of the team for the fantastic effort they have put in, to even get to the finals, let alone win. The Shakers were awarded €50,000 to go towards improving the training and development at their local branch. The Shakers were officially celebrated in an award ceremony at CablePrice’s Christchurch branch in February this year. Each member of the team was presented with a Top Team engraved watch, presented by Anders Schultz, Scania Regional Manager for Parts and Service, who flew from Sweden especially to attend the celebration. On behalf of all the staff at CablePrice, a huge congratulations goes out to the Christchurch Shakers, you have done us all so proud. 

CELEBRATES ITS

125 ANNIVERSARY TH

S

cania is celebrating 125 years of innovation in 2016. From its founding as a privately owned wagon-building company back in 1891 to today’s connected vehicles, Scania has stood steady through hostile take-over attempts and financial crises. And today, that successful journey continues. Here’s a brief rundown of Scania’s history, from its beginnings in 1891 through to today: 1891: The privately owned wagon-building company Vabis is established in Södertälje and sets about producing open goods wagons and transport wagons. Some 20 years later, Scania-Vabis is created through the amalgamation of Vabis with the Malmö-based, privately owned machine-manufacturing company Scania. 1923: Scania-Vabis designer August Nilsson develops a fourcylinder, overhead-valve engine. The engine’s power and reliability are of major benefit in trucks and buses. 1936: Scania-Vabis develops its first diesel engine, something that impresses the trade press during test drives.“To my surprise, I could hardly hear the engine,” wrote one journalist.“However, I certainly felt its effect as the bus shot forward like an arrow.” 1961: Scania-Vabis builds on its success in Brazil, opening its first ever production facility outside Sweden in São Bernardo do Campo, near São Paulo. 1969: A legend is born! Scania introduces a 350hp, 14-litre V8 turbocharged engine. It is the most powerful truck motor in Europe at the time and pioneers Scania’s low-rev philosophy with a high-torque output at low engine speeds. 1980: Scania launches the 2-series, the first modular commercial vehicle range. 1988: The new 3-series is launched and the following year takes the International Truck of the Year award. Scania is now able to tailor trucks according to customer specifications.

1995: The 4-series is launched and the following year also receives the International Truck of the Year award. 2000: Scania’s millionth vehicle rolls off the assembly line. 2003: Scania’s Young European Truck Driver competition makes its debut. Numerous winners have since been crowned. 2009: Scania launches the Scania Touring, a new coach built in partnership with Chinese bus bodybuilder Higer. Scania and Higer joined forces to produce buses in China for the world market – a pioneering step forward in bus manufacturing. 2010: Boasting 730hp, Scania’s new V8 engine is the most powerful in the world without having to compromise on fuel efficiency. 2011: Two years before it becomes legally compulsory, Scania introduces Europe’s first Euro 6 truck. 2013: New streamline models for long-distance transport are launched. 2015: Scania delivers its 150,000th truck with activated connectivity. Scania is contributing to global sustainable transport, making it much larger than just its products. During 2016, the company’s most important asset – its employees – will also be in focus. There’s a definite pride associated with working at Scania. Together, we have shaped our past and, together, we are building the future. 

AUSTIMBER CUSTOMER TOUR

I

14–16 April, 2016

n April, CablePrice hosted a customer group comprising representatives from 11 New Zealand forestry contracting companies to the Austimber2016 forestry expo in Traralgon, Victoria. The customer group was led by, Mark Palmer (General Manager – Sales & Marketing) and Andrew Crane (National Manager – Equipment Product). With all the customers being John Deere and Hitachi owners, the visit to Austimber was the key focus but the shopping and sightseeing in Melbourne was also a big highlight for the wives and partners on the trip. Arriving in Melbourne on Thursday, the group met that evening and had a welcome dinner at the hotel in the heart of Flinders Street before the trip out to Austimber the following day. On Friday morning, they travelled by minivan out to the Traralgon showgrounds, Latrobe Valley. From there, they boarded a bus to the Flynn Creek (HVP Plantations) in-forest demo site where the full array of outdoor static sites, in-forest displays, live harvesting, and forwarding/skidding demonstrations were located. Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia’s (HCA) site included a large marquee with a viewing area at the back which overlooked the pine harvesting and forwarding demo site as well as a viewing area on the other side which looked over the blue gum harvesting and skidding demonstration. The demo in the blue-gum showed the newly released John Deere 853K feller buncher as well as the 853K Harvester with a 616 Waratah. Also showing its massive pulling power was the largest John Deere skidder in the range, the 948L with the 281 horsepower 6090H nine-litre engine and smooth efficient continuous variable transmission (CVT) as well as added operator comfort with the lever control steering and swivelling seat. In the pine demo area was the new 859K levelling harvester with its large heavy-duty D7 undercarriage and powerful 300hp John Deere engine, combined with the 623 Waratah showing how productive and manoeuvrable a machine it is.The John Deere 1910E forwarder and eight-wheeled 1270E harvester were also in

action showing how comfortable and productive they are for the operators with their levelling and rotating cabs giving the best view and access to felling and loading the trees. There were also a number of other John Deere and Hitachi machines on display within the HCA site, as well as talks in the marquee outlining some of the new technologies including John Deere Worksite Machine Health Monitoring. After a good BBQ lunch at the HCA marquee, they had a look around some of the other displays and demonstrations before heading back to Melbourne for the night. By chance, the Hurricanes were playing the Rebels at AAMI park that night so most of them went to the game and watched the Canes comprehensively take out the victory. The following day, half the group headed back out to Austimber for a breakfast hosted by John Deere where they had a further opportunity to talk the John Deere Product Specialists who had come over for the event. After heading back to Melbourne, they had a free afternoon to look around the city followed by a farewell group dinner which was also attended by five of the John Deere Product & Sales Specialists that they had gotten to know over the last few days at Austimber. Apart from getting a great insight into the latest products and support that John Deere and Hitachi provides to the forestry industry, the entire group really enjoyed getting to know each other and exploring the sights around Melbourne. 

CENTRAL DISTRICTS FIELD DAYS

C

entral Districts Field Days, recently held in Manfeild Park, Feilding, was once again the venue for the Civil Contractors NZ Excavator Operator of the Year competition. Ten regional competition winners plus last year’s winner all converged into the Manawatu to compete for the much coveted 2016 title. The weather on day one certainly put up some challenges for event organisers as torrential rain hammered the venue and saw the temperature not rise above single figures. Fortunately day one was theory-based for all competitors so no soil was turned which was particularly fortunate because even the venue’s grass carparks began to look more like potato fields – with cars needing to be regularly towed out. The theory day involved pricing a ‘job’ and negotiating through all the necessary paperwork involved in doing that accurately and profitably. C

Days two and three were when the 11 competitors were put through their paces out in the field. Two 12t and 4t Hitachi excavators (ZX120-3 and ZX38U-5) were identically set up enabling two competitors to compete at the same time which made quite an impressive spectacle for the Field Day’s 30,000 visitors. This year’s competition saw more emphasis on precision dirt excavation as well as testing competitors health and safety knowledge, although the regular crowd-pleasing basketball slam dunk, painting, and bottle top popping events all still featured. The event culminated in an awards dinner on the Saturday night where Napier-based, Gair Contracting Operations Manager Steve Galbraith was presented with the winner’s trophy and prizes. In a moving acceptance speech, Steve admitted that he almost didn’t compete this year as he mourned the OME loss of his employer of 25 years, Joe Gair. V ISIT AT FIELDNATIONAUS Steve dedicated the win to his late boss. CablePrice is very proud to be associated I32-I AYS, STA L 3 N with the CCNZ Excavator Operator of the JUNE4. 15-18 D , 201 Year competition. National Sales Manager 6 of Equipment Alex Kelly says the calibre of the entrants never fails to impress him every year. “The intricate tasks the operators make our machines perform is very impressive and can’t help showcase both our Hitachi excavators and the industry’s skill level in a very healthy light,” he says. The 2017 Excavator Operator Competition kicks off again at the National Fieldays in June, with the Waikato competition first to find a regional finalist. 

AGFEST 2016

I

t is hard to believe that it has been two years since the last Agfest! With the present economic climate on the West Coast, you know things are tight, but you couldn’t tell from looking at Agfest 2016 – it has been a roaring success for the organisers. Attendance has gone from 8000 to 12000 and exhibitors are up 25 percent. The event also showcased the brilliant West Coast weather and showed that it doesn’t always rain there despite being a rainforest area! CablePrice NZ Ltd had a change in site from last time and as can be seen in the photo, we had a great location with 215 people signing up for the lucky draw for one of two promotion packs (one Hitachi and one for Scania). The winner for the Hitachi pack was Barry McRoberts, and the Scania pack was won by Violet McDermott. The larger site gave us the opportunity to show off a ZX17U-5A, Scania G480 6x4 bulk tipper, and a selection of rammers and compactors along with

the usual promotional apparel, toys and filter kits. Other exhibitors also had good sales over the two-day event. We also handed out a colouring competition for the children to be handed in by the 29th of this month with the winners being acknowledged in the next issue. Agfest 2016 was a great success for us we would like to acknowledge the hard work from all involved – namely Jo Negri, Steve Menzies (sales), Justin Maclean, and Alan Hodgson – including his parts team. 

n 8 February 2016, a DOS (Dealer Operating Standards) certificate presentation was made to Smallbone Ltd – the first non-CablePrice location to be certified under the Scania Dealer Operating Standards programme in New Zealand. The Group Aftersales Manager, Gary Lusty, accepted the award on behalf of Smallbone Ltd at a smoko shout for the Timaru team. This was a proud day for Gary and the Timaru team because “building a new branch and a new team has being bloody hard work” and this is just reward. Originally the company traded under Smallbone Bros Ltd and was established in 1919 by brothers Harold and Frank Smallbone. Almost a century later, in August 2012, present director Bob Grant entered into a joint business venture with Ashburton based AgriBusiness – The ‘Carr Group’ was announced. This joint venture has strengthened the mid Canterbury company and the new organisation now operates under the new tradename Smallbone Ltd.

What happens to Communicator after the initial three-year period? Three months prior to the customers warranty period ending, the fleet systems department will contact them to explain that the Control Subscription will end soon. The customer will be given the option to continue with the Control subscription on a month-by-month basis or they can choose to

Engines

downgrade their subscription to the monitoring package. NOTE – If we do not hear back from the customer, the communicator subscription will automatically be downgraded to the monitoring package on the last day of the customer’s service and warranty contract.

Why would I take out the Scanplan Max? Scanplan Max gives you the ability to lock in your R&M costs for up to six to seven years** at today’s rates, eliminating the uncertainty of those uncontrollable influences such as inflation, or parts and oil increases. This will give you the confidence to tender for future business contracts with the knowledge that you have protected yourself to the best of your ability from these uncontrollable influences. This opportunity is only available at the point of purchasing your new Scania and offers you the ability to fix your operating costs based on a cents per kilometre rate, which will be invoiced one month after going on the road and based on the cents per kilometre rate agreed within the contract with the first payment due 30 days later. This can give you, the operator, the benefit of a positive cash flow scenario with your business revenue due for receipt either before or at the same time as your Scanplan Assurance Max account is due for payment.

Can I not take out Scanplan Max once my 12-month service package runs out? We offer an option to defer starting the contract until the end of the free servicing period at either 12 months or 160,000kms – whichever comes first. This option for Scanplan Max must be taken prior to initial registration

What happens if I sell my vehicle and it still has some outstanding servicing and warranty benefit available? This is transferable to the new owner as long as CablePrice (NZ) Ltd receives a written application complete with the proposed new owner’s details prior to the change of ownership. At this point the confirmation of the reassignment can be completed in favour of the new owner**

HITACHI

T

TOP TECHNICIAN 2016

he annual Hitachi Top Technician competition was held in the Auckland Product Distribution Centre over two days in late March, the ninth time the event has been held. Technicians from all over the CablePrice network have the opportunity to enter and qualify for the final. The qualification process is made up of two 50 question multiple choice rounds, and the top three technicians at the end of the theory rounds qualify for the National final. This year Chris Futter from Palmerston North, Ben Robbins and Sam Reese both from the Greymouth branch were the finalists. This is the first time since the competition began that we have had two technicians from the same branch qualify for their chance to represent CablePrice at the Oceania Final in Singapore. During the final, the technician knowledge of our entire product range is tested with a closed book multiple choice question section where questions can include things like the front cab window in a ZX38U-5A has been increased in width by how many millimetres over the previous model? For those of you wondering it is 55mm wider than the previous model.

At the end of the competition Chris Futter from the Palmerston North branch was crowned the 2016 Hitachi Top Technician. These multiple choice questions are then followed by questions related to a Hydraulic Diagram, the technicians must trace the nominated circuit with hopefully no errors. From here a 90-minute practical takes place where the technicians are presented a faulty excavator and they must troubleshoot, repair and give their recommendations to the customer of any further issues they may have encountered during the practical element. At the end of the competition, Chris Futter from the Palmerston North branch was crowned the 2016 Hitachi Top Technician. Chris has just recently returned from Singapore where he represented CablePrice at the Oceania Top Technician Final. The winner from this competition goes on to the World Final at Hitachi’s Technical Training Centre in Tsuchiura, Japan. The Oceania final follows the same programme as our own internal event.Technicians from all over the Oceania region converged in Singapore where the heat and humidity are just as much of a challenge as the competition itself. After the practical element on the first day, it had turned into a two-horse race with Chris and Farid Hidayat from Hexindo being the only technicians to complete the practical fully. It all came down to the theory and this year Chris was beaten into second place by two points. Another great effort from Chris who has continued CablePrice’s proud history at this event.  14

BLOWING Scania is examining the role self-driving trucks could play in the future. The company is at the forefront of research in this area with tests under real-life conditions not far off.

T

he truck drives slowly away and its steering wheel moves from side to side. But the driver’s seat of Scania’s self-driving test vehicle, Astator, is completely empty. With this mining truck in focus, developers at Scania and researchers from technical colleges are examining the role self-driving trucks could play in tomorrow’s transport system. Development of the concept has come so far that the test vehicle now has no problem in carrying out tasks such as picking 22

up and unloading a load of gravel. It’s also capable of safely dealing with obstacles on the road. “Mines are environments that are especially well suited to selfdriving vehicles,” says Lars Hjorth, responsible for pre-development within Autonomous Transport Solutions at Scania. “The area is contained and the operator can control other equipment and staff working in the area.” Hjorth is also Project Manager for iQMatic, a research project that Scania is conducting in co-operation with other Swedish companies, such as Saab and Autoliv. The project is being run with support from the Swedish Government and also involves researchers from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Linköping University. Up until now, the mining industry has relied upon large and expensive construction-style vehicles for its heavy transport requirements. But interest is increasing around the world in smaller scale and more flexible solutions involving specialised mining trucks.

HOW THE TECHNOLOGY WORKS

Self-driving mining trucks could become a reality within a few years. Lars Hjorth, Autonomous Transport Solutions, Scania

“A truck solution is more cost-effective, with the total cost per transported tonne being significantly lower,” says Hjorth. “The infrastructure costs are also reduced as trucks don’t require specially reinforced roads.” Self-driving solutions for construction-style vehicles have been around for some years now. “Now the possibility is opening up to do the same thing with trucks, which could push the mining industry’s costs down even further,” says Hjort. Hjorth’s 20-member team within Scania’s Research and Development department is intensively researching self-driving

1.

The system is run from a control centre that issues driving assignments to trucks and constantly follows their movements.

2.

The self-driving truck perfectly positions itself for loading.

3.

The truck drives off, following the prescribed route.

4.

The vehicle’s sensors detect an unexpected obstacle. The truck stops and sends incident report to the system, prompting the operator to instruct the vehicle how it should respond.

5.

The operator leads the truck on another route.

6.

The truck unloads its cargo into a stone crusher.

vehicles and the peripheral systems needed to make them a part of tomorrow’s transport system in various areas. “Self-driving mining trucks from Scania could become a reality within a few years and the impetus and potential is here today,” says Hjorth. “The next step could be self-driving container trucks in ports. And after that the technology will also come to the longhaul transport sector, with self-driving vehicles driving between large transport centres where their cargoes are then loaded into ordinary trucks.”  CablePrice

arthmoving and construction projects, particularly in urban areas, as well as road construction, foundation and demolition applications are where this new model exceeds all expectations. Our new ZX225USLC-5 has been developed by Hitachi using feedback from owners and operators of its construction machinery. It incorporates a variety of features to meet the needs of customers in terms of sustainability, productivity, versatility, comfort, safety and easy maintenance. Like all new Zaxis-5 models, the ZX225USLC-5 is a high-quality, efficient machine capable of working in challenging conditions. bsolutely over the moon,” is the reaction of Tony Elmiger to the new John Deere 850J bulldozer he purchased for his forestry contracting firm Tony Elmiger Ltd in mid-2015. “My brother Ian is the operator and has really put it to the test as he pushes out a lot of work in a month. The John Deere probably does twice the hours of any other similar machine, and is stumping for most of the day which is very tough work.” The heavy-duty John Deere machine is currently being put through its paces in the Tarawera Forest, where Tony Elmiger Ltd is contracted to Hancock Forest Management.

Tony says the workload has been no issue for the 850J which has met every challenge thrown at it so far. “This bulldozer does it all, from hard stumping and earthworks once the stumps are out, to road construction, forming skid sites and opening up skidder access for logging crews to get into the bush. Ian loves it, and given that he has driven bulldozers his entire life and is probably among the top few operators in the country, you know something is good if he’s excited about it.” He says the bulldozer’s power, handling, reliabililty, and productivity have been great, and is pleased with the track wear. “It is also so quiet, you can hardly hear it working and it has a really comfortable cab. This is especialy important given the amount of hours Ian spends sitting in it.”

The “sheer strength” of the machine has also impressed Tony. “The pins and bushes in the blade, push beams, trunnion caps and balls are just so strong, which means the machine will last longer with less wear and tear.” Buying the John Deere bulldozer was far from a snap decision, he says. “CablePrice rep Terry Duncan and I go back a long way and he has been trying to sell me a John Deere for years. I had a couple of other brands of bulldozers but now I’ve made the decision to switch, I’m really happy.” Like many other John Deere owners throughout New Zealand, Tony can be reassured CablePrice takes servicing the brand very seriously. Darren O’Connor of CablePrice Technical Training says a national training programme is nearing completion that will ensure a minimum of one technician in every CablePrice branch has been trained specifically to work on John Deere dozers. “Our customers can be assured that high level technical knowledge and support is available whenever they need it, right throughout New Zealand. Having a specialist on hand means any problems are resolved quickly, with downtime minimised.” Tony has been contracting all his life, starting with Elmiger Brothers, a firm started in the 1950s by his father and uncle. In 1972, he set up Tony Elmiger Ltd with his wife Kathy, and was a general roading contractor until 1979 when he got into log harvesting and forestry contracting. After 19 years, he gave up harvesting and these days,Tony and his staff of 10 concentrate mainly on road construction and contracting services for Timberlands at Kaingaroa Forest, and Hancock Forest Management’s operations. The firm also contracts to Atihau Corporation Whanganui, upgrading farm tracks, putting in new dams, water reservoirs and fence lines at its numerous stations.

The bulldozer is the very first John Deere machine Tony has owned, although he is a long-time customer of CablePrice, purchasing his first Hitachi excavator back in 1997. Tony still owns other excavator brands, but in recent years decided to only purchase Hitachi excavators because of the great back-up service and parts availability that CablePrice provides. “The parts boys at CablePrice Rotorua are a brilliant team with a great service manager – it’s like a big family.” The relationship between the companies is not all business, with “a little bit of play” involved too, he says. “I’ve been racing cars on and off since the 1960s, and about 10 years ago started racing a 1965 Notchback Mustang in the Kuhmo Pre 65 Club. CablePrice gives me a little sponsorship, which is much appreciated and adds another dimension to our business relationship of almost 20 years.” 

THE HILLS It has so much power; you can put your foot down and go, especially on steep hills. It pulls 21 tonnes. Another feature Graham likes is the driving tips in Scania driver support.“One day when I stopped for a break I tried it out. I had been taking the truck up to 1400/1500rpm but with this, I found out that you are only supposed to go 1200/1300rpm. So I drove it and when it said ‘change gear,’ I did and then noted how it rated my performance, which was 75 percent, compared to the 55 to 60 percent I got originally. It was most helpful.” Other features he noted were excellent windscreen wipers: the “best wiper system I’ve ever come across – the four nozzles are incorporated along the arm” and powerful lights. The truck comes with CablePrice’s 12 months’ servicing and Graham speaks highly of the support he’s already received from the CablePrice team in Hastings.

tephenson Transport is based in Waipawa in Central Hawke’s Bay and has been in business since 1936. Bruce Stephenson’s parents, Sep and Nellie Stephenson started the company all those years ago and thanks to sound management and a focus on its core business – 60 percent is livestock cartage but they also carry out other farm-related cartage such as fertiliser, ground spreading, wool and general cartage – the company is still going strong, although Bruce has since taken over. Bruce’s son Todd works on the operations side as general manager so Stephenson’s is in very capable hands for a third generation. Ground spreading is a big part of the business and with increased payloads placing more demand on the vehicle’s power unit, Stephenson’s wanted a truck that could handle some tough assignments. “In looking for a replacement in our ground spreading fleet, we needed a 4x4 truck that could not only handle the rigours of off-road, uneven terrain but also the horsepower

“CablePrice Account Manager Colin Duley has been excellent and Workshop Manager Steve Markham has been most helpful. I had a couple of small issues I needed to sort out – they traced the problem and solved it immediately. I can’t fault these guys and think that’s down to the fact they work with these trucks all the time and and know their technology thoroughly.” “The change to Scania was a big step for Stephenson’s and they were great to deal with – we have a very good working relationship with Bruce and Todd,” says Colin. The new truck may be the first Scania 4x4 for Stephenson Transport, but with CablePrice’s 24/7 nationwide parts and service support network, this busy company can feel confident that they are in capable hands should any problem arise. 

to tow a trailer and carry a good payload for a good day’s work. What we wanted was a vehicle that could do this with relative ease and give minimum downtime in maintenance,” says Bruce. “Having weighed up our options, we chose a Scania P400 4x4, with 445/65 tyres and a Wealleans twin chain bin. In the very short time we have had it, it is performing exceptionally well, handling off-road and highway hills with ease. We’ve had to adjust to the heavier tare weight of the truck and this is achieved by the driver adjusting the load to allow for the conditions.” Graham Millar is 52 and has worked as a ground spreader driver for many years, having started out as a teenager with his grandfather, who operated ground spreaders. He’s been with Stephenson’s for 3.5 years. He started driving the Scania 4x4 as soon as it arrived in March and is one happy driver. The things he likes about the new truck are numerous. Graham finds the ride and comfort of the Scania fantastic. “It’s easy to get in and out of, with nice, wide steps and good grip so you don’t slip.”

he demands of the demolition industry require tough, robust machines, which is why Gavin and Shane Gray, owners of Quality Demolition and Contracting (2011) chose Hitachi when they needed to expand their mini excavator fleet. “We know Hitachi produces great quality, productive machines. They are also comfortable for the operators, reliable, strong and durable which is critical on our job sites,”says Shane. The firm is one of Wellington’s largest specialised demolition companies, servicing a variety of industrial, commercial, and domestic clients across a wide area that expands north of the region and down to the top of the South Island. Some of its recent projects include the demolition of B Block classrooms at Kuranui College in Greytown, and a large building

in Taranaki Street for the Memorial Park Alliance and NZTA. Quality Demolition and Contracting offers a wide range of services in addition to demolition, such as siteworks, earthworks, concrete breaking and crushing, and house and building removals. It also does a lot of seismic work in the Wellington CBD, stripping the inside of buildings ready for reinforcing and strengthening. In early April, the firm took possession of a new Hitachi ZX17U-5 and Hitachi ZX55U mini excavators, and has a Hitachi ZX48U-5 on order, due to be delivered in mid-May. These highly versatile “little machines with a big package” will be used mainly for earthworks and siteworks, but can be utilised for a range of other applications such as rock breaking, and small drainage and demolition jobs.

On CablePrice’s advice, Quality Demolition and Contracting has also purchased a low-hour second-hand ZX10 one-tonne mini excavator, which will be used predominantly for seismic work, strengthening and upgrades inside buildings. The new purchases bring Quality Demolition and Contractor’s fleet of excavators to a total of 12, ranging from 30-tonners, down to 1.8 tonnes. Given their size and nimbleness, the new Hitachis are well suited to tight worksites in the CBD where access can also be tricky, says Shane. “The machine mobility is a big plus and they are easily transported from jobsite to jobsite on our fleet of trucks. Presentation is also important to us and these machines are very smart and tidy. We were very happy with the way they turned

up, presented well and ready to go to work with everything on them.” He says the firm’s operators are impressed with the first two new Hitachis. “They are enjoying the comfort in the cab and ease of operation. Productivity on the job site has also been impressive.” Shane learnt the ropes of the demolition business in the company straight out of school. He went out on his own for a while, operating as Demon Contracting, before coming back to Quality Demolition and Contracting as a partner in 2011. He now manages its day-to-day operations, although Gavin is still actively involved. The firm continues to enjoy strong growth, and now has just under 40 permanent staff, and a similar number of temporary employees. For as long as he can remember, Shane has had a passion for heavy machinery and a love of motorsport. He has raced everything from stockcars to off-roading 4x4, but once he got his first taste competing in Super Trucks in 2000, he didn’t look back. He continues to be a highly competitive, successful driver and was instrumental in the rebirth of the Super Truck Championship and Trans Tasman Super Truck Championship. Shane says the new Hitachi machines are the first significant purchase of the brand made by Quality Demolition and Contracting. “I had owned a couple of Hitachis back in my Demon Contracting days, so was already sold on their quality and reliability. The proven support, 24/7 parts and service backup, and convenience provided by the team at CablePrice Wellington was another big factor in the decision to switch brands, as was the long-standing business relationship I have with salesperson Cameron Wait, who has joined the CablePrice team.” Quality Demolition and Contracting chose a standard package for its new machines. However CablePrice offers a wide range of options from its ready-to-use use ‘on trailer’ packages for the ZX17U-5 & ZX26U-5 base units for the entire range, or the capability to have any unit specified to suit a specific task. “We’ve only had our new machines for a few weeks, but overall are very happy with the performance so far. It’s easy to see why Hitachi is often the brand of choice for demolition or general contracting firms.”  CablePrice

orking in tough, alpine conditions is a test for any truck or heavy machinery. However the new Scania R560 6x4 rigid tipper, which Taumarunui firm TPP Contracting took possession of in December 2015, is definitely measuring up to the challenge. “We work around the mountains so are always pulling up hill. Our equipment is often pushed to the limit, however the Scania is handling the work with ease. I’m confident it will continue to do everything we ask of it,” says the firm’s owner Russell Le Quesne. Most of TPP Contracting’s work is for two main customers, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts and the Department of Conservation. “We do earthworks for all the major projects at the Whakapapa and Turoa skifields on Mount Ruapehu. We also maintain the skifield road for DOC at Whakapapa, where we also carry out snow clearing in the winter.” Russell bought the new dual-purpose, 14-speed 16-litre V8 Scania to replace his two older trucks in the fleet. It has both a four-axle tip trailer, used mainly for carting metal into Tongariro National Park to maintain roads for DOC; and a four-axle full transport trailer for shifting the firm’s diggers around the ski fields. Russell admits to a little self-interest when he chose the brandnew Scania. “I knew I was going to be doing most of the driving myself, so wanted to get a really nice truck. This is the first Scania I’ve owned. It’s great to drive, with the leather seats, onboard fridge and cruise control making it a lot more pleasant to spend the day in than other trucks I’ve owned.” Russell says he “doesn’t get too hung up” about fuel efficiency as he is conscious that working in the mountains makes it hard to compare his truck with those working on the flat. However he has a favourable impression of its performance and believes the new Scania has similar fuel consumption to his old trucks, even with its greater horsepower.

34

CablePrice

The long-standing relationship with CablePrice was also a big factor in Russell’s decision to choose the Scania brand, he says. “I’ve got four Hitachi excavators and a Hitachi loader in the fleet already, which I’m very happy with. I have a great relationship with the CablePrice team, so when it came time to buy the new truck I only got a price off them.” He says his CablePrice Account Manager James Worsnop made the buying process easy. “After a couple of discussions with James, I left it up to him to kit out the new truck with whatever he thought I needed. It was really good.” When Ruapehu Alpine Lifts was looking to buy a road-clearing truck to use on the mountain this winter, they asked Russell for his advice and he was happy to recommend a Scania. “In the end they purchased a new Scania 4x4, which we’ll be operating to do the road clearing along with one of our own Hitachi loaders as we mix and match the gear for this sort of work. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts had been thinking about buying a new truck for a while, and are very happy with its new Scania.” Russell has run TPP Contracting in his own right since the mid 1990s, and has six staff. With daughter Laura not too far off leaving school, there could soon be a bit of competition for the new Scania, he says. “Laura is showing a fair bit of interest, and there is a good chance she’ll want to get behind the wheel of the new truck.” 

hether it is operating in the paddock or on the road, AT Cook Contracting’s new Scania R480 6x4 rigid tipper is more than meeting expectations, says manager Clint Armer “We’re impressed as we’ve thrown a fair bit at the new Scania since we took possession of it in October last year. It has proven itself over the summer and goes bloody well. We’re very happy with its power and performance.” AT Cook Contracting is an agricultural contracting specialist based at Atiamuri, around 40 minutes north of Taupo, which provides a wide range of services including full cultivation, harvesting, drilling, and baling. It also runs a small trucking fleet to support the contracting business and provide general cartage for farmers in the wider region. Armer says the new Scania R480 6X4 is being used to cart grass and maize silage, bales, and any other general cartage for farmers. “During the harvest it operated mainly in the field beside the harvesters and went really well. Although the kilometres on the clock are still reasonably low, it has completed hours and hours of work in the paddock.” AT Cook Contracting also buys and sells supplement feed to support local dairy and beef farmers, which is also being delivered by the new truck, says Armer. “It is a multi-purpose vehicle for us. Our guys love driving it and it isn’t a battle to find drivers when you have good trucks.” The firm is no stranger to the brand, having purchased another new Scania from CablePrice back in 2013, which kicked off the relationship between the companies.

“The first Scania has gone really well. It’s a nice comfortable truck to drive and we’ve had a really good run out of it. It seemed a natural progression to look at another Scania when it was time to buy a new truck.” He says the support and back-up from Account Manager James Worsnop and the team at CablePrice Rotorua was another factor in the firm’s decision to stick with Scania. “We’ve had good service from CablePrice, with no issues at all. It’s great to know we’ve got the service and parts support whenever we need it.” Although it’s a little too early to measure overall fuel efficiency of the new truck, especially with it working at a low speed over many hours in the paddock, Armer says he expects it to deliver similar results as the 2013 model, which continues to give them a “good run”. Both trucks have the same tipper deck manufactured by Active Engineering in Rotorua, which works well, he says. “It’s a good, reliable setup that handles the heavy-duty workload we put the trucks through.” AT Cook Contracting has also fitted central tyre inflation on the new truck, which is giving them good results in terms of traction off road and tyre wear, says Armer. Reliability is another key attribute that is critical to AT Cook Contracting, particularly when the firm’s farmer clients are depending on them through the busy harvest season. “These trucks just keep going. Having fairly new, high quality trucks in the fleet definitely makes life a lot easier.” 

They have helped put me in my niche market and that has obviously helped me to develop my business,” says Tony. Originally, George had two full-time staff working for him but with the introduction of the excavators and specialty equipment,Tony has expanded the company considerably and is now one of the largest timber piling contractors in Auckland. There are seven staff members installing piles full-time with Tony and his partner Kellie managing operations from the same family farm where the company was established over 40 years prior. With a fleet of 11 Hitachi excavators ranging from ZX17U through to ZX225USRLC-3, Markovina Pile Driving has been involved in a number of large scale projects across the country including:

• • • • • •

or Tony Markovina, it’s the reliability and performance of Hitachi excavators and the financial support he received in the early years which keep him loyal to CablePrice. Markovina Pile Driving Ltd was started in West Auckland by Tony’s father George back in 1975 and was one of the first timber pile driving contractors established in the region. Back in those days, tractor and truck mounted rigs were used for drilling foundations and pile driving, most of which George built and developed himself. In 2001,Tony took over the family business, at which point he made his first excavator purchase; a second-hand Hitachi EX60-3. Tony was just 21 at the time and getting financed came with massive interest repayments. However a few years later, Tony was in a position to purchase a brand-new ZX80LCK-1 excavator from CablePrice, which was made possible with the help of the finance division. “Back in 2003, getting finance was difficult due to my age. From the time that I started talking finance with Pat Coley, the finance headaches went away which is a huge reason why my company has grown.” Unlike his father’s set-up, the introduction of excavators changed the way piling work was done and at that time, Markovina Pile Driving was one of just two companies in Auckland using excavators. Over time, the company has developed its own specialised piling equipment including vibrators, hydraulic drop hammers and drilling heads. While Tony shopped around when making his first new excavator purchase, it was the flow rate and specifications of Hitachi excavators that attracted Tony as it allowed

EXTRA LIFT, NO PROBLEM

new Isuzu CYJ530 purchased from CablePrice Wellington and fitted with a 65 Palfinger crane has almost doubled the lifting capacity of Greytown firm Lift Tech Transport, says owner Brad Langford. “The main reason for buying the truck was to meet demand and to be able to lift more. The new truck and crane unit can lift 13.5 tonnes in close at four metres, which is a significant increase from the 8.6 tonnes achieved by our old truck.” Lift Tech lifts, picks up, delivers, and installs loads all over the 38

Wairarapa and the greater Wellington districts. The firm also offers a secure storage facility, supplying 10-, 20- and 40-foot container storage options. Langford says the increase in capacity with the new Isuzu is enabling the firm to broaden its marketshare to include the recovery of heavy vehicles. The new truck has also made it possible to use just one machine instead of two to lift large items such as water tanks. “In the past we’ve had to use a separate truck and crane to carry out this work, so the new Isuzu is creating a lot of efficiencies and time savings.”

The truck and crane unit is also carrying out the firm’s business-as-usual work, which includes lifting containers and building materials such as framing and roofing products. To accommodate the large crane, Lift Tech Transport converted the brand-new 8x4 truck to a 10x4 with the help of Gary Douglas Engineering in Palmerston North, which also fitted the crane. Langford is driving the new manual 18-speed Isuzu Road Ranger himself, and says it is “really comfortable with awesome handling”. “Although we’ve only had it in the fleet since January, I’m very pleased with its performance so far. It drives really nicely and the fuel efficiency is good considering it is pretty much loaded all of the time with a crane on the back.” Langford is in the process of permitting the new Isuzu as a high-productivity motor vehicle (HPMV) to enable him to cart up to 50 tonnes.

“At the moment we can only carry up to 44 tonnes, but going up to 50 tonnes will allow us to cart two water tanks at a time.” Langford sold his previous truck, a 2009 Isuzu, to purchase the newer model. “My old truck was another 530 which I really liked. I think the Isuzus have better steering locks than other brands.” The competitive price offered by CablePrice on the new truck was another factor that swayed Langford in its favour. “Like most businesses, we work on a budget and try to keep our overheads down, so the good deal offered by CablePrice was really helpful.” Apart from getting parts for his old Isuzu, Langford hadn’t dealt with CablePrice regularly in the past but has been impressed with the purchase process and after-sales backup. “The sales rep Brian McDermott has been good to deal with, as has the Wellington branch. They return calls and work hard to sort any issues if they arise. I’d definitely deal with them again.”  CablePrice

Pepperell has purchased this R620 with RB662 rear axles, running 3.07:1 diff ratio. It is performing extremely well according to Pepperell. 620 horsepower with the Opticruise transmission is a great combination and has become very popular in all transport operations. working-time records of over 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field. In mining, cost-efficiency is all important, and Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings!
