Managing Director’s Address Pat Ward—Managing Director
H
i all, Welcome to the winter edition of the Track & Wheel. A lot has been going on at CablePrice since our last edition and many of you will have seen a number of changes at CablePrice. The most significant change has been the transition away from CablePrice acting in the capacity of importer and distributor of the Scania product in New Zealand. On 31 December 2018, after approximately 27 years, Scania New Zealand formally took over as importer and distributor of the Scania product in New Zealand. Of course, CablePrice remain an integral part of the Scania model in New Zealand as we partner with Scania NZ to continue to support the Scania product from as far north as Kerikeri through to Invercargill in the Deep South. We look forward to working with Scania to support your business for many more years to come. Some of you will be aware we have implemented a new Dealer Management System here at CablePrice. We went live on our new system at the beginning of October 2018. Like most new system implementations, it has not been without its challenges and many will notice delays in CablePrice getting invoices to you. We have been working hard on this and most of you should be seeing an improvement in this as time goes on. Once fully settled down, our new system will provide the platform to deliver enhanced service levels in the future and enable you and us to interact differently in the future making full use of modern technology. Thank you for your patience. At CablePrice, we are always looking to improve how we serve you, our customer. We know there are always ways to improve what we are doing. 2019 will see a very strong focus on how CablePrice provides parts to our customer base. We will be looking at both having the right part in the right place at the right time and at the various means by which you will actually be able to purchase parts from us. There is nothing
4
CablePrice
more frustrating to a business than to be held up due to product downtime because a part is not readily available. Our new systems, along with a specific organisational focus on improved parts supply, will enable us to make significant leaps in this area and I hope that most of you will notice this as the year goes on. Earlier this year, CablePrice announced the establishment of a new Special Products Division. This division is headed up by Jason Cann who comes to us with great experience from within our industry, most recently from the holding the Country Manager role at Penske Commercial Vehicles NZ. Jason has actually been with CablePrice for something like 18 months on a contract basis before taking up this new role with us. He will be responsible for the success of a number of exciting products in the NZ market, including Isuzu trucks, McCloskey crushing and screening equipment, HSC crawler cranes, and more. The Special Products Division has been formed as a direct result of an awareness that there is more to CablePrice than what you see at first glance. We wanted to bring these products out from under the shadow of our higher volume franchise products such as Hitachi and John Deere and create a larger awareness in the market that we really are a “Total Solution” provider. April has also seen us welcome in a new Deputy Managing Director, Keisuke (Ken) Okuzumi, and a new General Manager—Parts and Service, Chris Hovelle. These are new faces that bring new thinking to how we operate as a business and how we serve you and your business. All of CablePrice is dedicated to being the best we can and I am looking forward to delivering constantly improving outcomes over the coming year. Be safe. Pat Ward

50 YEARS AT CABLERPRICE! GEOFF BELLINGER At a time when the median job tenure for all employed people is four years, a 50-year tenure is nothing short of amazing
O
n 27 May 1969, yes 1969, a very young Geoff Bellinger started an adult apprenticeship at the CablePrice Auckland branch (which was, at that stage, located by the Mt Wellington off-ramp). He took about three years to complete his apprenticeship, heading into the world of equipment repairs across the Auckland region. Over the next few years, Geoff made his way through the ranks to Assistant Service Manager, Workshop Supervisor, and then on to the role of Equipment Team Leader in 1984, eventually looking after the northern part of the North Island, putting his mark on training, development, and the overall direction of the way CablePrice carried out equipment servicing. In the mid-1990s, Geoff was responsible for starting up the North Shore branch (finding it much closer to home with his young family), setting it up with one truck and two other mechanics. He was responsible for building the relationships with new customers, developing staff and processes to ensure positive results, and maintaining standards across the new branch. Under his tutelage, Geoff put three ‘Hitachi Top Technicians’ through their paces, with two of them winning the World titles,
something no one else has managed to achieve. Only in 2015 did he decide to move back into a shopfloor role, giving away the management roles that he had mastered over the years. He still, at 75 years young, keeps up with the younger ‘whipper-snappers’ (as he calls them) and teaches them a trick or two to keep them on their toes! The North Shore branch still has customers that specifically ask for Geoff and don’t mind paying for him to travel across Auckland to get to their machines because of his knowledge and skills, which is a real credit to him. On Saturday, 25 May, CablePrice celebrated Geoff ’s 50 years of service with a surprise party at a local establishment in Warkworth along with almost 100 of his old colleagues, customers, friends, and family (with his son travelling home from Chile especially for this event). There were plenty of stories to tell, with lots of laughter, smiles, and reminiscing of Geoff ’s legendary status and endeavours over the years. The best part was that we managed to keep it from Geoff (who we knew would ‘run for the hills’ if he found out) and the look of surprise made it all worthwhile. On behalf of the team at CablePrice, congratulations Geoff. We are richer for having you in our team and being able to call you a friend and colleague. Your skills, tricks, and knowledge are second to none and you are a true gentleman. Well done on an awesome effort (but there’s no retirement yet!). n CablePrice

Career Opportunities
Michael De Vries, Ryan Newson, Finn McCormack, Justus Paitai, Alanna Mikkelson, Jacob Williams, Andrew Peel, Justin Burnett recently joined our team of cadets.
With 15 branches throughout the country and a staff of close to 400, CablePrice has a wealth of career opportunities available. A professional development programme, technical training that is second to none, plus opportunities for internal transfers and promotions, places CablePrice in a competitive position as an employer of choice.
C
ablePrice provides many opportunities in Management, Sales, Technical roles, Parts, Special Products, and Administration. And having a direct connection with Hitachi and other international manufactures present staff with overseas opportunities as well. This may be by way of training, attending conferences, or competing with other countries on a world stage for international awards and recognition. “Our bi-annual cadet intake programme provides the opportunity to those who are intent on a career as a diesel technician to become fully qualified within an industryleading organisation, achieving a worldwide qualification without the burden of a student loan and with great career prospects. With support from our internal assessors and MITO, cadets can complete their training knowing they will be fully supported through the programme,” says CablePrice HR Manager Tara Jamieson. CablePrice’s technician training programme is run
by Darren O’Connor, the Technical Trainer, who has previously led technicians to success in the Hitachi Top Technician World Finals in 2014, 2017, and 2018. Additionally, the CablePrice Whangarei team won the Scania Top Team Championship in 2018, while the Christchurch team won it in 2016. Tara goes on to say that CablePrice decided to do away with the old system of paying training rates in favour of employing cadets on a minimum wage with regular pay increases as their skill level grows. “This makes for a more attractive and financially viable opportunity for those wishing to pursue this career pathway.” Once qualified, career options may include national and international travel opportunities, advancement to Senior and Master Technician levels, climbing the ranks to Team Leader, Service Advisor or maybe even Service or Operations Manager to name just a few of the possibilities. You couldn’t ask for more. n CablePrice

KCM merges with HCM as part of the restructuring
K
CM Corporation (Kawasaki Construction Machinery), a specialised wheel loader manufacturer was merged into its parent company, HCM (Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd) in April 2019. While KCM have been manufacturing wheel loaders for HCM for a number of years, and both brands have been available here in New Zealand, HCM ultimately planned to unify the brands to Hitachi. Kawasaki wheel loaders will no longer be sold under the Kawasaki brand but will continue, from 1 May 2019, to be sold by CablePrice (NZ) Ltd – a wholly owned subsidiary of HCM, under the Hitachi brand and thus will broaden the existing Hitachi wheel loader model line-up. This change will ensure that customers, committed to the features and benefits of the Kawasaki model line-up, can continue to purchase and operate these machines under the Hitachi brand via CablePrice. “Kawasaki wheel loaders have had a successful history with MIMICO spanning many years, and we look forward to continuing this success. CablePrice will focus on providing customers with a seamless transition, ensuring a quality aftersales service is provided through our 18-strong nationwide branch and service network while continuing to grow new
wheel loader sales. “Under the new scenario, CablePrice have also appointed Mimico as an authorised service agent so that Mimico can continue to service their existing Kawasaki customer base now and into the future,” says CablePrice Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer Pat Ward. “MIMICO and CablePrice have shared a strong relationship over many years. We are working closely with CablePrice to ensure our customers experience minimal disruption to their businesses. I’d like to reassure owners of Kawasaki wheel loaders that they will continue to receive ongoing support for their machines now and for many years to come. We will be visiting these customers to explain how this situation effects them over the next month,” Chris Gray, General Manager MIMICO n

2019 Hitachi Top Tech Championship Pat Ward & Sam Reese
Sam in foreground L - R Peter Finlay, Aidan Mahony, Sam Reese, Stephan Ebert, Lucas Solomon and Pat Ward
W
hile, Thursday, 23 May marked an ordinary day for most, it was one of much apprehension for three CablePrice technicians, who spent the morning mentally preparing themselves for the much-anticipated National Hitachi Top Tech championship 2019. Hosted at Auckland branch, the day kicked off with our three competitors: Sam Reese from Greymouth, Lucas Solomon from Gisborne, and Stephan Ebert from Hastings, sitting an open-book theory exam. This written component involved tracing a nominated hydraulic circuit on a Hitachi excavator, which, by itself, is no easy task without the added time pressure of just 90 minutes for completing this leg of the competition. A short break and a chance to get the pulse rate back down and it was time to breakout the tools for round 2 – fault diagnoses. With three identical Hitachi ZX130-5 excavators on hand, each was pre-loaded with numerous electrical and hydraulic faults. Just to be sure all was fair, it was a quick round of ‘paper, scissors, rock’ to determine which excavator would be
allocated to each tech. Once again, no pressure – just three faults plus one hidden to identify and fix – all carried out within the 75-minute timeframe and under the watchful eyes of judges and other CablePrice staff. With rounds one and two under the belt, it was time to write up the job card report and face the firing squad of questions from the interview panel, which aims to quiz each competitor on their general safety, industry and product knowledge. As round 3 was finally brought to a close late in the afternoon, the techs could finally take a breather, while the judges squirrelled themselves away to tally up the score sheets. At a dinner hosted later that evening, National Equipment Technical Trainer Darren O’Connor announced that it was Sam Reese who topped out on the leader board, thus crowned New Zealand’s Hitachi Top Tech champion for 2019. Sam will go on to represent CablePrice and New Zealand in the Regional championship, happening in Australia this August. A massive pat on the back Sam. We’re all very proud of you and can’t wait to see what round 2 brings! n

Riki Lum wins 25th National Excavator Operator Competition
2019 National Excavator Operator Competition champion
This year marks the 25th year of the National Excavator Operator Competition and another year for the Hitachi orange being showcased in the field. CablePrice has been sponsoring the National Excavator Operator Competition for many years with suppling Hitachi excavators of all sizes to the event. The competition was held at the Central Districts Field Days in Feilding on 15–16 March 2019 and the excavator used was a ZX120-5 series.
R
iki Lum was named the winner of the National Excavator Operator Competition at an awards dinner on Saturday night following two days of intense competition against the country’s top excavator operators at Central Districts Field Days in Feilding. Organised by national association Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ), the competition saw the 10 regional champion excavator operators navigate a twoday long course to test their skills against one another using Hitachi excavators. The competition can feature tasks such as tests of ‘real-world’ skills, for example, traversing a trench or lifting and relocating a manhole cover. They can also include crowd-pleasing tests of precision such as uncorking a champagne bottle using an excavator bucket’s teeth or slam dunking a basketball into a two-storey concrete pipe. Lum was certainly up for the challenge. Lum comes from Kiripaka in Whangarei and works as an excavator operator for Northland-based civil construction company Clements Contractors. He is a father of five and grandfather of nine. He thanked the competition judges and officials for inspiring him to improve his skills over the past year, particularly James Lux, the 2013 competition champion who now sets and judges the One-Day Job Challenge – a technical challenge Lum had struggled with in the previous year’s competition. “James, you made me step my game up. Last year, I had the skills on the course, but I had nothing in the One-Day Job,” said Lum, who came back to win this year’s One-Day Job challenge by more than 20 percentage points above his

nearest rival in the challenge and earned him the coveted One-Day Job Cup in addition to the national title. CCNZ Chief Executive Peter Silcock congratulated the CCNZ Manawatu Branch for 25 years of delivering the competition, originally conceived by local contractors Graeme Blackley and Grant Smith. “A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to deliver a successful competition. The commitment of the Manawatu Branch has helped the competition to grow and evolve over time. It’s just getting better as time goes on.” Jim Beamsley of Central Demolition in Palmerston North took second place in the competition with a consistent all-round performance while Josh Keane of SouthRoads in Otago took third. Each took home a significant prize pack. n

Kerikeri’s bigger and better new home
F
or many years, Northland has been a prominent region for CablePrice, with many of our customers basing themselves in this area. Proving a particularly popular hub for many of its longstanding customers, CablePrice established a service support presence in Kerikeri a number of years ago, initially as a mobile base, serviced by our Whangarei branch and more recently, as a standalone branch with its own workshop. However, in response to increasing demand for our services in the region, the Kerikeri branch was re-located in January this year, to bigger and better premises, where the branch can now offer full truck, bus, and equipment servicing. In addition, it also operated a full parts department and employs additional staff to meet customer demand. “Over the past few years, we have continued to build on the relationships formed between CablePrice Whangarei and the Northland community and are excited to have this new full-service branch operating in Kerikeri,” says Whangarei Service Manager Simon de Prinse. “Servicing our key customers in this area and moving closer to their business is a show of our commitment to this growing region,” Simon says. “In addition to now being able to offer full workshop services, we will still continue to offer field service support to our customers.” Next time you’re in the area, pop in and say G’day to the team. We’re now located at 20 Kerikeri Inlet Road, Kerikeri. Alternatively, give us a call – our number remains the same 09 401 6032. n CablePrice

CablePrice signs distributor agreement with MB Crusher
I
talian-based MB Crusher, recognised worldwide as an industry leader in developing and creating construction equipment mounted products for the crushing, demolition, and recycling industries, has, in an agreement signed in April at this year’s Bauma International trade show in Germany, appointed CablePrice as their Exclusive Distributor for New Zealand and Pacific Islands. “We are excited about this agreement with MB Crusher. They have a great reputation and produce an excellent range of machine mounted crushers and screeners that will complement our existing line-up of Montebert attachments and McCloskey crushers,” says CablePrice General Manager, Special Products, Jason Cann “We see this as a natural extension to the high-quality range of equipment that we have been known for delivering to our customers for over 65 years. We’re excited to be moving forward with MB Crusher as this will give our customers local access and aftersales support to additional international product lines,” says Jason. Crusher buckets Perfect for on-site crushing of inert materials and the first one-of-its-kind to be introduced on the market, the MB Crusher Bucket is a piece of equipment that works by taking advantage of the hydraulic system of the excavators to which it is fitted.

Bell Tele Logger Bell 225F
O
ver the years, Bell Equipment has gained a reputation for building strong, reliable machines in their equipment such as their ADTs. They have now succeeded in relaying that reputation into their F-Series Tele Logger. Generations of manufacturing at Bell has brought about a series that is like no other. The F Series 225F HP Tele Logger has strived to improve on safety and ergonomics as well as key components such as lower cost per tonne solution and strong reliable machines. All this while still in keeping with their core design element of simplicity. First developed by Irvine Bell in the early 1960s, the Tri-Wheel design is a concept based on the motion of how a person would be walking and picking up the logs. This concept has paved the way for the Bell Tele Logger while undergoing subtle improvements through its evolution. By transitioning from an air-cooled to a water-cooled, 57kW (76hp), turbocharged, four-cylinder engine, this F series machine emits lower operating noise levels and a cool operating temperature. The Yanmar water-cooled engine also has a lower fuel burn and lower running costs to really maximise production efficiency. The F series is equipped with a pilot operator self-neutralising transmission, which helps for ease of operation and operator safety. As well as this, there is a Fail-Safe spring applied and hydraulically released (SAHR) brake,
which reduces any brake related Tele Boom safety risks. 5965kg Unladen “Unlike previous models, Operating Weight the F series frame is both Reverse Camera ROPS and FOPS certified and 4 cylinder, 57kW, turbocharged being triangular means the Grapple open 1577mm engine force is distributed evenly for ROPS and FOPS 400x15.5 10Ply certified frame durability,” says the National Rear Wheelsets Hydraulic Equipment sales manager for Implement Pump CablePrice, James Magill. 23.1x26 LS2 16Ply “Rear-view vision has also been a General Front Wheelsets problem with similar machines in the past, which is why Bell have made it standard in the F series Tele Loggers to have a reversing camera. ith the launch of the new Bell B45E 4x4 at bauma, Bell Equipment has added a new model to its range of articulated 4x4 two-axle ADTs. Similar to the 60-tonne B60E and the smaller Bell B30E 4x4, the new truck is configured to provide a highly-efficient and cost-effective transport solution for niche applications in the mining and construction industry. With the front half of the truck 16

being essentially the same as its 6x6 counterpart, the Bell B45E 4x4 is derived from proven highvolume technology and decades of experience. Powering the truck is a 390kW/2460Nm inline six-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz, optimised for off-highway use by MTU. This, combined with the Allison seven-speed automatic transmission, contributes to outstanding driving performance while

delivering the low fuel consumption typical of Bell ADTs. Wet brakes on both axles ensure safe deceleration and work in conjunction with the Jacobs Engine BrakeÂŽ to provide the multi-stage programmable automatic retardation. The standard Bell cab is spacious, offering great visibility and comfort while ensuring safety and productivity. This is achieved through a comprehensive package of productivity,

The new B45E 4x4 introduces the conceptual advantages of Bell Equipment’s two-axle ADT to the 40-tonne payload class. safety, and ease-of-operation features, based on real-time data collection by the truck’s sensors (on-board weighing, pitch/roll sensor, etc.). In designing the rear chassis and the 25m³ bin, the designers followed the design of the Bell 4x4 flagship, the B60E which has been optimised for tough mining applications. A rigidly mounted 55-t-axle supplied by German manufacturer Kessler with 21.00R35 twin tyres ensures a robust solution with a nominal payload of 41 tonnes. At the front the truck rolls on 775/65R29 tyres that boast high load carrying capacities and high lateral stability, an essential characteristic for a machine intended for challenging underfoot conditions. To improve ride comfort, the B45E 4x4 can optionally be equipped with the Bell “Comfort Ride” adaptive front suspension system. Like the Bell B60E, the B45E 4x4 bin concept is along the lines of a rigid dump truck rock bin with bottommounted telescopic tip cylinders. Thanks to its wide geometry and flat-bottomed floor, the 41-tonner fits in well with typical quarry loading equipment and
offers better filling characteristics than the longer 6x6 ADT bins of the same volume. When carrying sticky material such as clay, optional body heating helps to minimise carryback when tipping. Additionally, Bell Equipment has found that their 4x4 bin configuration, which doesn’t have the traditional ADT dovetail, is considerably better at minimising carry-back than their 6x6 counterparts. With a fully programmable maximum tipping angle of up to 55° relative to horizontal, the short bin body reaches a tipping height of only 6394 mm, which can be an advantage when operating with overhead structures (for example hoppers and crushers). “Thanks to its high capacity and superior productivity, the Bell B60E can perform a supporting or primary production role in many large opencast mining and quarrying operations around the world. However, we see target applications for the B45E 4x4 as small to medium-sized mining or quarrying operations with lower production tonnage as well as larger sites with difficult underfoot conditions,” said James Magill, CablePrice’s Equipment Sales Manager. The Bell B45E 4x4 entered the market in April 2019 following its launch at bauma. Like all Bell 4x4s, the trucks are produced in Bell Equipment’s main factory in Richards Bay, South Africa with the first machines planned for delivery late this year. An easy oil monitoring solution ConSite by Hitachi Construction Machinery is an oil condition monitoring system, a solution for keeping construction machines in their best condition by monitoring the condition of their oil. Continually monitoring The condition of oil is a barometer of the health condition of a machine. What ConSite OIL does? Monitors the condition of oil on a continuous basis*1, *2; informs abnormal changes of oil condition; provides consistent supports of detailed analysis of oil and inspection and repair of machines; and contributes to reduced downtime of the machine and the eventual life cycle cost. Do you know why oil monitoring is vital for good maintenance? It is necessary to know the condition of oil to reduce the number of machine failures. If oil deteriorates, the machine will be affected. Then, if a machine failure occurs, the oil will further deteriorate. In other words, machine failures can be detected in their early stages by monitoring the condition of oil. Oil sensors for engine and hydraulic system watch* the two types of oil 24/7 They monitor oil condition 24/7 as far as the machine is operating. Abnormalities are detected in early stages. Realisation of continual monitoring of oil condition Even if oil analysis is periodically done on certain intervals, if an abnormality occurs in the middle of an interval, it may develop to a catastrophic failure before the next analysis. We at Hitachi Construction Machinery developed a unique algorithm and made it possible to monitor oil condition 24/7 with the oil monitoring sensors.

The making of a
monster
An incredible 100 crane lifts and almost 2000 man hours were involved in the massive logistical exercise to assemble OceanaGold’s new 360-tonne Hitachi EX3600 excavator from CablePrice, which is now hard at work at the company’s Macrae’s Flat mine site in Central Otago.
O
ceanaGold’s Technical Services Superintendent, Pieter Doelman, says after retiring another large excavator at the mine site, the company put the acquisition of a new machine out for competitive tender. One of the main reasons the tender went in favour of CablePrice was the great performance of OceanaGold’s two existing EX3600 models on its fleet, which have proven the Hitachi reputation for operating efficiently and reliably for tens of thousands of hours in a demanding environment, almost non-stop, he says. “We’re still getting great service out of our old machines, which we purchased in 2005 and 2010 respectively. We hope the new machine will perform just as well or better over its lifetime.” With its massive production, power, and toughness, the EX3600 is built to handle the biggest excavation jobs. It produces a maximum 1944 gross horsepower from its Cummins engine, with its fuel tank holding 7450 litres of diesel. The machine can load a 181-tonne payload truck with ease in five passes. Pieter says achieving high production in bulk waste mining is the company’s current focus with the machine. “It is being operated pretty much 24/7 between our four crews, to remove overburden, with production averaging a bit over 3000 tonnes per hour. This is around five percent ahead of our expectations, so it’s going well so far.” Around 65 crane lifts were required to shift the excavator’s main components from Port of Lyttelton (where they arrived from Japan) to the Macrae’s mine site, New Zealand’s largest 22

gold producing operation. The initial excavator build time from delivery to having the machine running and bucket fitted was eight days, which included around 1200 man hours. It took a further 30 days and almost 800 additional man hours to complete the local options, performance testing and delivery to the operational area. These processes were led by CablePrice Invercargill branch Service Manager, Roger Hunt. “We are very happy with the job that Roger and his team did. In addition to the CablePrice guys on-site, Roger coordinated a large bunch of sub-contractors, including haulage and crane people, auto electricians, glaziers, and a host of others. The job was completed on time, and we didn’t have any safety incidents

during the huge assembly process, which was pleasing.” Pieter says part of the contract with CablePrice was for the machine to pass performance specifications laid out by OceanaGold, which it did at its first attempt. Over the years, OceanaGold has made minor modifications on-site to its existing EX3600 excavators, which were incorporated into the specifications for the new machine. “The most significant was the addition of a customised emergency ladder to the side of the excavator. We had one built by Dunedin company, SiteWeld for our older machines, and asked CablePrice to install the same design on our new EX3600. The ladder was still built in Dunedin, with its installation coordinated by the CablePrice guys.” A bespoke bucket, designed and constructed for OceanaGold by Jaws Engineering in Brisbane, was another special addition, which required coordination by the CablePrice team. OceanaGold also requested the machine’s handrails be painted bright yellow in the Hitachi factory, rather than the standard black. “Our maintenance people need to be able to work on the machine in all conditions in the field, including poor visibility at night, in fog, or during inclement weather. The bright handrails help to keep them safe.” Pieter says there have been no complaints from the new machine’s operators, who are enjoying the comfortable, wellinsulated pressurised cab, with plenty of leg room and storage space, and a well-laid-out work station, including ergonomically positioned controls.
TRACK & WHEEL
When it comes to maintenance, the simple servicing, inspection, and cleaning of the EX3600 reduces costs and allows operators to focus on the job. The EX-6 series boasts Hitachi’s computer-aided EnginePump Control (E-P Control) which coaxes optimum efficiency from the engine and hydraulic pumps. This innovative system senses load demand and controls engine and pump output for maximum operating efficiency. Other features include an advanced hydraulic system, tough frames, a powerful arm, and optimum bucket digging force. The relationship between OceanaGold and CablePrice goes back almost 30 years, when Doug Hood Mining, which was at Macraes from the start of the mine in 1990 through to 1995, had a mixed fleet, including some Hitachi machines. MacMahons, which ran the mine from 1998, had a fleet of
Hitachi EX1800s, and finished at the site in 2002 when OceanaGold decided to go mining themselves. “OceanaGold originally started with another excavator brand but decided to purchase the first EX3600 in 2005. Since then, all of the primary loading machines we’ve bought have been Hitachis. We have a good relationship with the brand and CablePrice, who provide good sales support, back-up and service, and are responsive to any issues.” OceanaGold had an excellent year in 2018, producing 200,000 oz gold. Production in 2019 isn’t expected to quite reach those record heights, although, another good year is predicted. The current mine life is until 2021, although OceanaGold hopes to extend this to 2024. n

No job too tough for John Deere and Hitachi
T
he strength, safety, and stability of forestry equipment from John Deere and Hitachi will soon allow Havard Logging to undertake mechanised tree felling in steep areas of the Tinui Forest, where it’s under contract to Juken NZ Ltd. Hitches have been put on the company’s two John Deere 959MH tracked harvesters, which will allow them to be tethered to an EMS fitted winch on a Hitachi ZX330 excavator, which will sit at the top of the hill. The winch will be controlled by the operator in the 959MH, allowing him to assist the harvester up and down the hill. “Tethering the machines will allow us to work on steeper sites and more broken terrain and will put the control in the operators’ hands. They will be able to effectively and safely assist themselves in and out of these trickier sites.” Gavin says Havard Logging has been a fan of John Deere harvesters since it purchased a 909MH around five years ago. This was followed by another 909MH and two 959MH tracked harvesters, with the last

purchased around a year ago. “We’ve still got the original 909, which has done around 9000 hours now, and we were the first company in the Wairarapa to purchase a 959MH harvester. John Deere has an excellent product. Our machines are fast and reliable, and we feel they have more power than other products around.” All four harvesters have John Deere’s industry leading, patented levelling system, with an exclusive slope monitoring system. This allows the machine to work on steep or uneven ground and has made a big difference to Havard Logging’s highly trained operators, says Gavin. “The levelling is awesome. Our operators say it is much more comfortable working on slopes in the tilt cab, which sits level all day as it can tilt 26 degrees forward and 14 degrees left and right. In other machines, they’ve had to sit with their feet on the windows to try and stop themselves from sliding off the seat or rely on a seatbelt to hold them up.” South Star felling heads are used on the 959MH harvesters, with Satco heads on the 909MHs, which both run “nice and

comfortably” on the John Deere machines, says Gavin. The 959MH models have a 9-litre diesel engine, peak power of 246kW at 1900 rpm, net peak torque of 1392Nm at 1500 rpm, and a maximum boom reach of 10.34 metres. Gavin says they have proven to be a step up in power and stability, with the dual swing drives delivering excellent productivity boosting power. “We’re very happy with the machines’ productivity. They power through their work.” The operators in the 959MH tracked harvesters also benefit from a roomier station with ergonomically designed controls and significantly improved visibility through floor to ceiling front and large side windows. Havard Logging runs a large and modern fleet of forestry equipment, which includes John Deere 848 and 748 skidders, and around 15 Hitachi excavators ranging from 12 tonnes to 45 tonnes. “We’ve probably bought in excess of 40 Hitachi excavators from CablePrice over the years, which have proven to be good, reliable machines. They pretty much sell themselves.” A strong business relationship between Havard Logging and CablePrice, going back decades, is another key driver in the company’s purchasing decisions, says Gavin. “CablePrice has a great product, but we also appreciate the strong ties between our companies. My CEO, Mike
Havard, had a fantastic relationship with retired Sales Specialist, Malcolm Pascoe over many years, which I’ve continued, with General Manager, Sales, Aidan Mahony. They have a great team of skilled mechanics, who keep our equipment operating in peak condition. If we do run into any issues the machines are fixed with minimal downtime.” n

Optimising performance
M
arch 2019 marked the arrival of the first new Bell’s B20E LGP to New Zealand. The B20E LGP is the smallest ADT (Articulated Dump Truck) in Bell’s offering and is packed full of features. Based on Bell B25E and B30E trucks, the B20E 6×6 has a well-proven platform that has been put to the test in high production environments across the globe. ADT specialist, Bell Equipment, have recently extended its global product offering with a Tier 4 version of its 20-tonne truck, the B20E 6x6. This model offers customers the benefit of safety and performance enhancing technologies developed by Bell over the past 30 years and further cements the ADT manufacturer as the global leader in the off-road haulage market. Though physically smaller than its larger counterparts, the B20E has comparable capabilities but packaged within a more compact unit, making it particularly suitable for use on small to medium-sized jobsites. The B20E offers a very similar power-to-weight ratio to other Bell ADTs, providing the optimum balance between performance and fuel consumption. For example, the B20E can produce the same power-to-weight ratio as the Bell B30E (5.11kW/tonne). The B20E is also fitted with wet brakes to offer sealed protection against deep mud, and customers can alternate between standard 20.5R25 earthmoving tyres or low-profile, extra-wide 800/45 R30.5 tyres, designed to offer significantly reduced ground pressure and market-leading flotation in excessively muddy or soft sandy underfoot conditions.
28
CablePrice
Bell B20E Furthermore, the B20E also boasts a turning circle of 3.7 metres, with 800mm wide tyres, and ground pressure as low as 95kPa, while the load-over height of 2.5 metres allows the ADT’s bin to be filled using various loading tools. The team at CablePrice has been holding demo days in the North Island to introduce the new arrival to the industry and give customers the opportunity to experience everything the B20E LGP has to offer the construction industry. “The main purpose was to introduce the new model to potential customers and let them drive the truck to see how awesome it is for themselves. We had Bell representatives from the factory and our local specialist to assist with answering any questions,” says James Magill, CablePrice Equipment Sales Manager. “A couple of the sites we had in Pokeno and Warkworth were typical of a normal construction site with a mixture of soft, wet, and hard ground allowing customers to drive the truck loaded and preform controlled climbs and descents.”
TRACK & WHEEL
In addition to the demo days, the CablePrice sales team were also recently put through their paces, getting some exclusive hands-on training from Bell representatives, including a technical advisor. The first day’s training involved product familiarisation, features, and benefits. Day two was for putting it all in to practice in the driver’s seat, done in a controlled environment with an experienced operator trainer from Bell in the training seat. As there was also a B30E on-site, the team got to experience first-hand, the differences and similarities between the B20E and the larger ADT. This included how the B20E shares the same cab as the larger ADTs and features such as the great ergonomics, operator comfort, reliable electronics, visibility, and safety. It’s these reasons that Bell ADTs are highly rated by operators all over the world. All the sales staff benefited from taking the driver’s seat and getting up close and personal with the new B20E LGP. For more information on the B20E, get in touch with your

tricky sites, as it can move a bit of dirt around without having to free up one of our bigger trucks. It is also a good size for carting our smaller diggers around or towing them. Our guys say it is a comfortable, quiet and tidy truck, and they like the stereo.” Craig is a long-time fan of the “good, basic, reliable” Isuzu brand and currently has nine truck and trailer units on the fleet. “Three of our Isuzu trucks have over one million kilometres on the clock and are still going strong every day.” Linked Earthworks also has a number of Hitachi excavators on its fleet, with the latest addition being a 35-tonne ZX350LCH-5G model purchased at the start of the year. “In the first four months, the excavator did 800 hours and is going brilliant. The auto greasing system is particularly good.” Craig says he appreciates the automatic monthly reports the firm receives for

its bigger Hitachis, covering things such as GPS, idle hours, fuel consumption, driver hours, and servicing. “We don’t have to chase the information, which makes managing the fleet so much easier.” CablePrice is a key part of Linked Earthworks’ machinery replacement programme, which is focused on upgrading the entire fleet to late model gear, he says. “It is a really straightforward process dealing with CablePrice. They set up our new machines with everything we need, meaning we can drive out the gate and get straight to work. As a supplier, CablePrice carries a good stock of parts and equipment, so I can ring up with an order, and we usually have it within a week, instead of having to wait four months for something to come into the country. Dealing with one company and service team makes life a lot easier, which is one reason we’re planning to move towards CablePrice as our sole supplier.” n
We use the breaker between three Hitachi machines. It is easy to set up and use and can be attached in a couple of minutes. Maintenance is simple too.

allum Battock and Conrad Robertson of Upper Hutt general contracting firm, Robertson and Battock Civil, say it was a “no-brainer” to replace the firm’s old Isuzu truck with a brand new Isuzu CYZ460 Euro 5 from CablePrice Wellington. “Our old 380hp Isuzu truck was coming up 20 years old and had given us a good innings. But it was starting to work really hard with our business doubling in size over the last couple of years. We’re rapt we traded it in for the new CYZ460. At 460hp, it is a hell of a lot gruntier than the old truck, with a big jump up in power and productivity. We’ve also noticed a considerable improvement in engine retarding on the new truck, with the addition of a drive line retarder.” Robertson and Battock carry out a significant amount of access road upgrades to transmission towers for its main client, Transpower, and also undertakes general access work, forestry roading and maintenance contracts for Wellington Regional Council. Callum says the 18-speed manual CYZ460 Euro 5 is a “great, reliable workhorse”, which is being used mainly for general quarry carting and tipper work and to transport the firm’s new Hitachi ZX75US-5 excavator, another recent purchase from CablePrice. The Isuzu’s electronics, reversing cameras, and heated mirrors, which stay clear in all weathers, are other features being enjoyed by the Robertson and Battock team. “Comfort in the cab is good too. It has a nice seat and travels well on the road.” Callum started the contracting firm in 2010, and in late 2017, Conrad entered the business after being away from the Hutt Valley for six years. When they joined forces they bought some new gear off CablePrice and doubled the size of the business which now has five staff. Around Christmas that year, they invested in two new Hitachi excavators – a ZX225US-5B and ZX135US-5B, which they are “really pleased with”, says Conrad. “Both of us have always been fans of Hitachi excavators, with their quickness
and smoothness a big selling point. Hitachi just seems to get better and better and is pretty hard to beat. Running with late model, reputable gear such as Hitachi and Isuzu, backed up by CablePrice’s overall support systems, gives us a real peace of mind. In today’s contracting environment, clients have an expectation we have good gear, which complies with health and safety and environmental standards.” Callum says he is “particularly fond” of the 135 diggers for their versatility and performance, and they have just ordered a new ZX135US-5B, which is due to be delivered early June. This will replace a ZX135-3, which has completed 10,000 hours. Callum and Conrad value the relationship they have built up with CablePrice Wellington, which, since 1991, has been the authorised Master Truck Dealer for Isuzu truck sales, parts and service support in the greater Wellington and Wairarapa regions. Conrad goes back a long way with the guys at CablePrice and has always had a good rapport with them, he says. “There are some great people on the team who are good to deal with.” The recent purchase of the Isuzu truck (through Isuzu Sales Specialist Brian McDermott) and the four Hitachi excavators (through Hitachi Sales Specialist, Cam Wait) has been just as seamless, says Callum. “It was an easy process, with no problems during the sale and delivery. The back-up support from CablePrice is also excellent. On the equipment side, we have a lot of dealings with the service guys, who are great. Because the truck is brand new, we haven’t had much to do with the truck service guys yet, but we’re expecting the same high level of service. Overall, it’s hard to fault CablePrice.” n

New model John Deere grader a hit in the Far North
F
ar North Roading (FNR) has taken possession of the first John Deere 620G motor grader to be sold in New Zealand, and the lighter, more economical machine is already ticking plenty of boxes, says director, Brady Wild. “We’re very happy. The grader’s fuel efficiency is excellent, and although it is physically smaller than the bigger machines, it has all the same features, and more than enough power to do the job. It is also very nimble, which is handy when doing maintenance work on the roading network in the Far North, which can be windy, hilly and tight.” The 620G is one of the newest additions to the John Deere G-Series motor grader line. It uses a Tier 3 John

Deere 6.8-litre engine, rated at 200hp. This improved horsepower, combined with net peak torque of 915Nm and blade pull of 14,091kg, produces generous power and lugging ability, maximising performance, even in tough spots and hills. The 620G also has Seismic Shift, a gate-less shifter, which allows operators to directly move the machine from forward to reverse, in any gear, at any time. Brady says around 90 percent of the grader’s workload is being carried out between FNR’s roading maintenance contract with Far North District Council, and new forestry roading and maintenance work on the Aupouri Peninsula. “We’ve also put it to work on the construction of quite an elaborate roading network at a new 500-hectare avocado development in the region, plus some private subdivision

Our guys have commented several times how quiet, smooth, and comfortable the grader is compared to anything else they’ve used. products, and excellent support. The after sales service provided by CablePrice is more important to us than trying to save a few thousand dollars on a purchase by looking at cheaper brands.” Brady says FNR appreciated a specialist being brought over from Australia by CablePrice to train the company’s operators on the new grader, running them through all its features. “I thought that was pretty good.” FNR has possibly the largest and most modern fleet of plant and equipment in the Far North, including around 16 Hitachi excavators. “We have a big Hitachi fleet and have probably purchased in excess of 25 Hitachi machines from CablePrice over the years. These are mainly big 20 and 35 tonners, for bulk earthworks. We really value the long relationship we have with Hitachi and John Deere Sales Specialist, Phil McKenzie, who is great to deal with and sorts out any problems if they arise. It’s good to have one person to ring.” FNR has operated under its current structure from its Kaitaia base, since 2011, with major shareholder, Brady Wild and his two fellow directors having strong links with local iwi. “We are proud to be locally owned and operated, and have around 95 full-time staff. As a company, we have a strong focus on providing career paths and training for school leavers, and helping local Maori, who make up around 70 percent of our staff.” n and orchard work. It’s going great.” Feedback from FNR’s operators has also been positive, says Brady. “Our guys have commented several times how quiet, smooth, and comfortable the grader is compared to anything else they’ve used. We have quite a few bigger guys on our crew, who find the roomy cab great to work in.” The “terrific run” of a nine-year-old, six-wheel drive John Deere grader on FNR’s fleet, was one of the reasons FNR decided to stick with the brand when completing the new purchase, he says. “We’re really happy with John Deere, and also have an 850 dozer on the fleet. However, probably the biggest factor is the relationship we’ve had with CablePrice over many years. They offer a great package, with good

ge has proved no barrier to setting up his own business for 22-year-old Zac Williamson, who earlier this year, took the bold step of launching Williamson Earthmoving with all new gear from CablePrice – an Isuzu FTR750 truck and a Hitachi ZX55U-5 excavator. Zac says he was well supported by the team at CablePrice Wellington, where Sales Specialists, Brian McDermott (Isuzu) and Cam Wait (Hitachi) put an excellent package together to get his business underway, and Financial Services Manager, Patrick Coley, arranged

the finance to suit the individual needs and objectives of his business. “They were great guys to deal with and worked together to make the process really easy. I was able to go in for one meeting with them all and come out as the owner of a new digger and truck.” Williamson Earthmoving operates in the greater Wellington and Wairarapa region and carries out a range of general contracting work from section dig-outs and slab preparation to driveways, horse and cow races, and culvert cleanouts. “I have a couple of big contracts underway with some building companies in Wellington, which are looking to
TRACK & WHEEL
expand into the Wairarapa, and I also do some work for Fulton Hogan. Having new gear, which meets all the code of compliance requirements, helps when dealing with these bigger companies,” says Zac. As a contractor since leaving school, Zac was already familiar with the Isuzu and Hitachi brands, as his previous employers had also dealt with CablePrice. “I knew they were quality brands, so stayed true to what I had learned on. I also knew that if a service was due, or there was a breakdown, I could trust CablePrice to get it sorted fast, as they have the numbers to pump out the work. You just ring one person at CablePrice and it’s sorted.”
Zac says his new six-speed manual tip-tray Isuzu FTR750 is a versatile and reasonably compact truck, which is the ideal fit for his business, given its good turning circle and payload capacity for its size. With six pre-installed certified tie-down points on the deck, it is also perfectly suited to transporting Zac’s new Hitachi ZX55U-5, which fits snugly on the back. “The Isuzu does well to carry up to 7.5 tonnes, and at the same time is still able to get into tight driveways and sections. It is a really well-priced truck when compared to a 10 yarder, which only carries three extra tonnes.” He says the 260hp Isuzu, with its electronically controlled direct injection fuel system and 200-litre fuel tank, is smooth, comfortable, and like “driving a big car”. “It also has plenty of go when I need it. I’ve never had a problem with Isuzu trucks in the past and this is definitely another good one.” CablePrice also sold Zac the ramps required to load his Hitachi ZX55U-5 onto the truck. The durable excavator is another compact machine, with a short rearend swing allowing for safe operation in tight working areas. It came with an operator station full of easy-to-use controls, and a low fuel consumption design, ensuring better fuel efficiency. “It’s a great digger, which also works well in narrow spaces. CablePrice supplied all the attachments I needed at a reasonable cost, which was great.” Although just starting out, Zac plans to expand in the future and expects CablePrice to be with him on every step of the journey. “Brian and Cam from CablePrice gave me lots of good advice and delivered just what my business needed. They know what they’re talking about, they know my business, and they’ve been great to deal with. I won’t be going anywhere else.” n

New McCloskey I34R crushing it
W
ithin half-an-hour of arriving on-site at Aaran Pascoe Contractors’ quarry just outside Whangarei, the first brand-new McCloskey I34R recirculating Impact Crusher sold under CablePrice’s new agency with the brand, was hard at work. “We did our initial training on the crusher at CablePrice’s Whangarei yard. The transporter picked it up that afternoon, and it was out in the quarry and putting metal through almost straight after it was unloaded. It’s a great machine, which is performing exactly as I thought it would, plus a bit more. For a mobile machine under 30 tonnes, it has a really favourable weight to production ratio, and pumps the metal through,” says Aaran Pascoe. After hearing a ‘whisper’ that CablePrice might be taking on the McCloskey International agency, Aaran said he was 40
CablePrice
keen to consider being one of their first New Zealand customers for the brand. “I had taken delivery of a jaw crusher and screening plant from another supplier during the previous 18 months but was still looking for a new impact crusher. I put the decision on pause until I knew what was happening with CablePrice.” After doing his homework, and talking to the CablePrice team about their intentions with the McCloskey agency, Aaran says the decision was a no-brainer. “I decided to go with them as I already had a great relationship with their sales team and service guys at the Whangarei branch with our other gear. They are talented people, who come from all parts of the industry, and I knew they had experience servicing crushing and screening plants.”

To be able to get the whole package from one company is a big plus for us
Aaran has been in the operator’s seat himself since purchasing the new I34R crusher, and it has impressed him on several fronts, including its versatility. The model has a full screening and recirculating system, allowing crushed and screened final product to be produced from one machine. A radial return conveyor recirculates oversize material from the screenbox back to the feed hopper and can even feed another machine or stockpile. “It is a very good, smart piece of gear, which hasn’t been over-complicated. This is definitely a positive I’ve noticed with the McCloskey equipment – that in 10 years’ time when other brands might be having technical issues, we expect this crusher to just keep running.” The mobility of the compact, nimble, 27.5-tonne crusher, which is less than 2.5 metres wide, is another big plus, he says. “The crusher is simple to transport from site to site and can operate in smaller spaces with ease.” While McCloskey International may be a new member to the CablePrice family, the brand has been a pioneer and leader in the screening and crushing industry since the firm’s humble beginning in Canada back in 1986. Today, it offers a complete range of screeners, crushers, conveyors, and washing systems, producing in excess of 1300 units globally each year. With innovations such as a remote control 180-degree
radial stockpiling conveyor with variable discharge height for maximum stockpiling flexibility, and a solid rubber wheel drive system, it’s no surprise McCloskey is one of the leading Trommel manufacturers in North America, says Jason Cann, General Manager of Special Products, CablePrice. “McCloskey products are produced and field-tested to perform across a number of industries, including quarrying, mining, construction and demolition recycling, waste management and recycling, composting, biomass, and landscaping. Any industry that requires an end product to be crushed, screened, or stockpiled can benefit from McCloskey equipment.” Aaran Pascoe agrees that McCloskey International is a welcome addition to the CablePrice offering. “To be able to get the whole package from one company is a big plus for us, and I’m sure others in the industry will also benefit from the strong partnership between CablePrice and McCloskey, as they join forces to become serious players in the market.” Aaron says the experience of looking outside the ‘CablePrice circle’ at other impact crushers and companies during his 18 months of research, reconfirmed what a ‘great run’ his business has had with CablePrice, after buying his first 12-tonne digger from the firm around 20 years ago, when he was a 21-year-old starting out in the industry. “Since then, I have purchased various Hitachi excavators and wheel loaders, John Deere bulldozers, Isuzu, and Scania trucks, and a Montabert rock breaker from CablePrice. There are never any surprises or dramas dealing with the company, and it’s great to be able to work with guys we know and trust. The purchase of the crusher was another easy process and yet again we’ve had great after-sales support from the Whangarei branch.” n

Rigid frame dump trucks
In purchasing Euclid (a rigid dump truck brand synonymous with the mining industry), Hitachi was able to expand its line-up of mining products, with a world-leading range that perfectly complements its hydraulic excavators. Hitachi AC-drive technology, developed by Hitachi Limited, provides truck performance with a higher top speed, better gradability, and stronger retardation. These features increase the truck’s productivity and uptime while reducing operating and maintenance costs, all of which equates to a lower cost per tonne of material moved. Engineered for performance, designed for comfort, and built to last, Hitachi rigid dump trucks make even the toughest jobs look small. Model

Equipment
specs A comprehensive guide to the full range of John Deere construction, forestry, quarry and mining equipment.
Wheel loaders The John Deere K-Series wheel loaders take the three tenets of John Deere machine design—productivity, uptime, and low daily operating costs—to new levels. This is a machine designed to work, day in and day out. All of the models in the K-Series range are Loadrite™ ready and feature advantages such as solid-state electronics, highlyefficient Quad-Cool™ cooling, and advanced diagnostic monitors. Traditional John Deere durability is inherent in the K-Series design, with booms and mainframes so tough that they’re warranted for three years or 10,000 hours.

Tele Loggers
Bell’s 225F tele loggers come with several ergonomic, safety and comfort improvements including a larger cab, enhanced operator visibility, better cabin lighting, increased fuel capacity as well as noise, heat and vibration isolation from the cab. Moving to a water-cooled engine has also reduced noise levels by up to 26%. With its highly manoeuvrable design and low capital outlay, low operating costs and low fuel consumption, the Bell Tele Logger is one of the lowest cost-per-tonne solutions for sorting, loading and moving logs.
