MANAGING DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS Pat Ward— Managing Director
W
elcome to the 2017 winter edition of Track & Wheel. CablePrice is continually looking for ways to improve our service and offerings to customers. We recognised some time ago that good customer service is based on a sound platform of values and ongoing commitment to these values, which means we have to live and breathe these values every day. I am hopeful that more and more of you are recognising the focus that we are putting into making the customer experience with CablePrice positive. Another one of the things we recognise is that, in order to deliver what our customers want and need, we have to be connected to customer pain-points and understand their business. We need to listen to our customers and adapt ourselves accordingly. I have asked CablePrice senior managers to make sure they regularly travel to meet our customers all over New Zealand. That means for me as well. I am looking to either visit or communicate with as many CablePrice customers as I can. The feedback we receive from you, both good and bad, helps us become a better business. What impresses me with many CablePrice customers is the keenness to assist CablePrice to be better. The constructiveness of much of what we hear is much appreciated and only serves to make us better and better. I believe that is based on good recognition from you, our customers, that a good partner supporting you is beneficial for your business. We also recognise that our business has moved well beyond the one-dimensional component of selling an excavator or a truck or a component or an oil change. Our customers need and expect much more from what was once simply seen as a supplier. We need to be a quality business partner. So, expect to see a progressive shift from CablePrice moving more and more into this space. Expect to see us asking you what you need to make your business run better—expanding and improving our facilities, products and services along with developing our staff to become a more complete and reliable partner, focussed on the success of your business. We know it will take time, but the journey has begun and from there it will be a process of continuous improvement. In the meantime, we will continue to visit and communicate with you. We will continue to address areas where we can do better and

we will continue to put you at the centre of everything we do to improve our business. As I mentioned in the last edition of Track & Wheel, if any CablePrice customer feels they have not had the optimum experience, please pick up the phone or send an e-mail to any member of the CablePrice executive team. Thank you for your continued support of CablePrice, and I hope that the rest of the year holds good prospects for you, both business-wise and personally.

Last year, he took out the honours for selling the most John Deere wheel loaders throughout the country. Last month, he delivered a JD844K—the largest John Deere wheel loader available in New Zealand —which will be used for the Kaikoura SH1 clean-up. Todd is an extremely valuable member of our sales team and we congratulate him for racking up 20 years of service.
Eddie Jowett—National Manager, Bus and d Coach Eddie Jowett also recently celebrated his 20th anniversary of working at CablePrice. Eddie joined back in May 1997 as a Commercial Vehicle Technician. He held this role for three years before moving into a sales role in Auckland. Seven years later, he was promoted to his current position, where he is responsible for overseeing all National bus and coach product sales. Eddie has also taken over responsibility for our Used Truck Sales and has done excellent work improving the management of our sales process. Eddie is an experienced and valued member of our sales team and we congratulate and thank him for his 20 years of service.
Melanie Talbot Mel joined the National Warehouse team based at Wellington’s head office back in 1997 when CablePrice was located at Toop Street in Seaview. She is part of a supportive, tight-knit crew, and she is the third person in the team to reach the 20-year mark with another two on 10+ years. CablePrice is pleased to introduce Mark Nurse as the new Account Manager for d. Commercial Vehicles in the Lower North Island. In late 2016, CablePrice welcomed Andrew Lane to their Commercial Vehicle sales team. Based at the Rotorua branch, Andrew will be looking after the Hamilton, Rotorua, and Tauranga regions. HITACHI TOP TECHNICIAN T
he ninth edition of Hitachi Top Technician took place during the first three months of 2017.Technicians from all around CablePrice’s network entered the initial qualifying rounds for the chance to compete in the national final and earn the right to represent CablePrice at the Asia Pacific Final later in the year. Sam Reese (from Greymouth), Kieran Lyon (from Nelson), and Jason Brashier (from Silverdale) topped the field and qualified for the final that was held at CablePrice’s Product Distribution Centre in Auckland on the 6 April. The first challenge of the day for the technicians was the theory section, which consisted of 75 questions that had to be answered without the use of any aids such as workshop manuals. Once this was completed, an excavator wiring diagram awaited where a complete circuit had to be traced without any errors. Up next was the practical assessment. This element was set up as though the technicians had been called to repair a customer’s excavator. There were faults that prevented the correct operation and a few hidden faults that, if left, would cause our owner issues in the future. The challenge with this section was that the excavators were no more than 10 meters apart and each of the finalists could not only hear how the other finalists were going but also see their progress.

All of the finalists were marked on their ability to adhere to Health and Safety requirements. These are as simple as maintaining three points of contact when climbing onto and off the excavator, sounding the horn when starting the engine, etc. Once again, 75 minutes was allocated, and for the first time since the competition began, one of the finalists completed all of the major faults. This is no doubt due to the amount of technical training our technicians receive while employed with CablePrice. Once the first two elements were completed, each finalist had 20 minutes to complete their job report before being presented to a panel of judges. After all of the points were tallied, Jason Brashier from the Silverdale branch emerged as the winner of the National competition and will now go on to compete at the regional competition hosted in Singapore later this year. “There must be something in the water in the Silverdale area, as over the years, there have been two technicians who previously won the Asia Pacific final and went on to represent CPL and the World Final. Luke Larsen, now the Team Leader of Silverdale, was one of these technicians and he won the World Final in 2014,” National Equipment Training Manager, Darren O’Connor, says.

ollowing the introduction of a new centralised Customer Support Centre, it’s never been easier to order parts from CablePrice. With the click of a button, customers can now e-mail their orders directly to the Customer Support Centre’s team of experienced parts personnel, who provide a rapid response and dispatch service. Placing orders electronically means customers don’t have to spend time ringing or visiting their local CablePrice branch and also allows them to access a range of fast and flexible delivery options, says National Parts Manager Glenn Goad. “Customers can choose whether they want to pick the parts up from one of our 13 branches nationwide, have them delivered from the local branch, or sent freight-free from our centrally located parts distribution warehouse in Wellington.” Customer Support Centre staff have total inventory visibility across the entire CablePrice network and so can also suggest the best-recommended delivery option to ensure parts are in the customers’ hands as quickly as possible. “The service offers full flexibility. Nothing really changes from a customer perspective, except that having more people to deal with their enquiries will lead to a better, more seamless service.” CablePrice is also rolling out a new phone system throughout the branch network to enable the Customer Support Centre to automatically receive overflow calls from the branches. This gives our customers peace of mind that no matter where they are located, they can always be put in touch with someone who can help.
Another advantage of having the Customer Support Centre based in Wellington is that the team share the same office as CablePrice’s parts specialists, who are in constant contact with our overseas parts suppliers. They are, therefore, equipped to provide on-the-spot parts advice and availability when required. Glenn says the introduction of the Customer Support Centre is a positive step that is changing the way CablePrice does business. “It is not our intention to remove customers from dealing with the branches but to speed up and simplify the purchasing process.” Scan the QR code below or e-mail customersupport@ cableprice.co.nz to place your parts enquiry.

Forest Industry Contractors Association (FICA) Conference John Deere Forestry recently sponsored the Forest Industry Safety Summit Conference, which was held in Rotorua. CablePrice was fortunate enough to be able to have a remote-operated John Deere 850J bulldozer on display at the conference. This machine was equipped with the dual rope traction assist winch system, which was developed and is marketed by Rosewarne and May Limited. This winch system allows traditional forestry equipment to be used on steeper slopes when using the dozer with a tethered logging machine. The Remote Operated Bulldozer (ROB) was generously lent to us by Whangarei-based Skipps Logging Limited, who delayed taking delivery of their new machine by four days to allow CablePrice to prominently display the unit at the conference. A John Deere 948L grapple skidder was also on display— in line with CablePrice’s philosophy of letting customers “feel the ironâ€?. The Safety Summit primarily showcases new systems, practices and tools for improving forest safety, all of which John Deere is passionate about. Richard Lawler, global director of forestry engineering for John Deere, attended the event and also gave a presentation on the future of forest machine technologies and what we can expect as enhancements for operator safety, productivity and efďŹ ciency. New equipment service dealer for Tauranga
M
t Maunganui firm Performance Diesels has become the latest equipment service dealer added to the CablePrice stable. The firm has been the Scania parts and service dealer for the Tauranga region for more than 24 years, but it wasn’t until a recent move to a bigger, brand new premises—three times larger than its old workshop—that Performance Diesels was able to take on the equipment servicing side as well, says Owner/Manager Roger Creighton. “It’s great to be in our new premises and we are excited to be working with the Hitachi product, with a major focus on excavators and wheel loaders. The brand isn’t entirely new to us, as we’ve always worked on heavy equipment and serviced Hitachi gear in the past. But with a lack of capacity at our old workshop, we tended to prioritise truck servicing.” Taking up the equipment service dealership and moving into the new workshop has enabled Roger to entice back a topperforming diesel technician who completed his apprenticeship with Performance Diesels and left after more than 10 years with the firm to gain more experience in heavy machinery work. “Rob is definitely the right person for the job and is currently undertaking training to familiarise himself with all the latest Hitachi technology. We’re also currently building a fully-equipped service vehicle for him that will enable us to provide a mobile service to our equipment customers.” The firm’s new, state-of-the-art 2900sqm workshop was built on a large green field (7000sqm) and is kitted out with all the bells and whistles to provide enhanced service to its clients.

Two full-length service pits replace the one-half length pit at the old workshop, quadrupling the firm’s output capacity and significantly speeding up servicing times. Other features include engine reconditioning bays, new trucklifting hoists, larger parts and warehousing areas and bigger offices. “We also have a dedicated lane for truck COF inspections that is being operated in a joint venture with VTNZ, who are manning the lane. It’s an excellent add-on service for us.” Roger says there has been a great customer response to Performance Diesels becoming an equipment service dealer for CablePrice. “Customers are pleased to have a local service dealer to support and build on what Rotorua branch has been providing in the area. We have a great reputation in the market, earned more than 24 years supporting the Scania brand, and intend to do exactly the same with the Hitachi product.” CablePrice Parts and Service General Manager Colin Bowden says that having Performance Diesels on-board to carry out equipment servicing as well as truck servicing is a great asset not only to CablePrice but also to equipment and vehicle owners throughout the Tauranga region. “Performance Diesels is a well-respected, resourced, and professional operation, and it is reassuring to know that our customers in the area are getting high-quality support from their local Hitachi and Scania service dealer.”

The McKeown Group—Oamaru
B
ased in one of the South’s beautiful historic towns, McKeown Petroleum is one of those classic Kiwi achievers. Operating from a base on the sea front of Oamaru, the tight-knit team works hard to send fuel and chemical products all over the South Island. No fanfare of flash signs and big buildings here, just a quietly successful business that aims to deliver on what it promises. With fuel stations covering the greater part of the South Island, farms from Canterbury to Southland and many smaller business to supply in between, managing director Ken McKeown does not take any chances when choosing the brand of truck carrying the product he sells. Fuel delivery is paramount, whether it’s to the tourist and holidaymakers in Wanaka, the busy dairy farms in Southland or the other transport companies he supplies. No fuel means no business, it’s as simple as that. Scania has been the brand of choice for Ken for many years now and the consistent service that these trucks deliver, runs in tandem with Ken’s business goals.Wanting his business to be known as ‘the marketer of choice’, to be respected and to provide ‘superior performance’—these are words that are also used when talking about the Scania product that work with Ken to help achieve his goals. McKeowns recently celebrated a great milestone of reaching 50

years in business, with 39 of these as a CablePrice customer. Our Southland Account Managers, Kere Menzies and Daryl Highsted, joined in the celebrations and presented Ken and his team with a plaque to commemorate their great achievement. Ken currently runs a 21-strong Scania fleet with bodies built by Lowe Industries in Christchurch and are overseen by Ken’s Transport Manager Richard McGregor. Richard works closely with CablePrice to ensure each truck is purpose-built for the specific job it is doing. It could be a low cab P Series for sneaking in under the trees and shed roofs of the many farms they supply, or a big 620hp R series for the long hauls down to Nightcaps and further afield. It doesn’t matter what the job is, McKeowns have built a Scania that will do it comfortably. Just don’t mention the fuel savings that Scania trucks can achieve over those long hauls as what is it that Ken sells again?

Fleet management made easy FREE S
cania’s Fleet Management Portal is the gateway for operators and drivers to access detailed information about their Scania fleet and driver performance. Globally, Scania has more than 250,000 trucks and buses utilising this technology. The portal itself captures information gathered from the Communicator Fleet Management software present in the allnew Scania. Data collected from on-board gives valuable insight into driving styles, productivity, and economy. This data is transmitted via satellite to the web portal and can be accessed via computer, tablet, or smartphone. The portal is also available via a user-friendly app, which is free for both Apple and Android devices.
Having recently received a comprehensive upgrade, the information gathered is now easier-than-ever to understand. The new graphic interface gives users a quick and informative overview of key factors for assessing fuel consumption, such as coasting, idling, speeding, and driving with cruise control. “Rather than a host of numbers displayed on-screen, the new portal uses a clean, graphic display, making it easy for customers to see where improvements can be made,” Peter Finlay, Fleet Systems Manager at CablePrice, explains. The portal also features a fleet position and tracking tool, an intelligent

service calendar that calculates when servicing is due based on data from the truck, and a driver analysis system that not only evaluates performance but also coaches the driver on how to achieve a higher grade. The Performance Evaluation Model (PEM) has the ability to assess the type of work the driver is doing and score the driver’s performance in relation to other New Zealand Scania truck drivers in similar applications. “This is a much fairer comparison, as it now measures a driver’s performance against others doing similar jobs. Obviously, line haul drivers do a different job to urban distribution drivers. Log transport is different to milk collection. This new system understands and allows for this.” Drivers can now see their individual scores for key performance factors, graded from A to E, with an overall score as the basis for improving their skills. Likewise, operators can see how their drivers’ perform and plan targeted training activities. This level of tracking and diagnostics can bring significant benefits in increased uptime to businesses through improved safety and reduced operating costs. Now offering COF servicing at our Greymouth branch
I
n 2015, CablePrice started exploring the option of undertaking Certificate of Fitness (COF) in our workshops. Christchurch was the first to start offering the service, and we are now pleased to announce that our Greymouth branch has also been complied by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and started issuing COFs on-site at the start of April. With the recent changes in the legal requirements, our CablePrice Greymouth branch has become a one-stop shop for our customers, with vehicle assessment, repair and full COF capabilities. “With the isolation of the West Coast from other major centres, we have been working towards being a one-stop-shop for some time now. Focusing on wheel alignments, air-con servicing and COFs, which has had limited support for
our customers in the past, our Greymouth workshop has the flexibility to work around our customer’s needs without having to book limited space during restricted hours with our local testing station or out of town suppliers,” Greymouth Operations Manager, Justin MacLean, says. Colin Bowden, General Manager of Aftersales for CablePrice, says,“We already offer a wide range of services to our customers and see the ability to offer on-site COFs as a natural fit for our business. While Greymouth is one of the two COF facilities, more branches are expected to offer this service in the future. Our customers are keen to take advantage of the benefits they can achieve by utilising our on-site COF and so it makes sense to make this available at more sites across our nationwide network.”

Satellite workshop in Kerikeri
I
n January this year, CablePrice set up a satellite branch in Kerikeri to better support the growing forestry and construction customer population in the far north. The satellite workshop is set up for both field and workshop servicing and is open from Monday to Friday, with Saturdays worked as and when required. The workshop can handle machines up to 20 tonnes for general repairs and engine/ component rebuilds, with any larger machine work carried out at CablePrice’s Whangarei workshop. While two staff members are currently stationed at the site, CablePrice is looking to employ a third person, solely based out of the workshop, to handle the increasing demand in the
region.Whangarei Operations Manager, Iain Hunt, is impressed with the amount of customer support CablePrice has already received since opening the operation in Kerikeri. “This workshop allows our customers to receive exceptional support and service for Hitachi, John Deere, and other machines that they may have. It also allows us to reduce employee fatigue by reducing travel times to most of our customers in the far north area instead of having to send staff from Whangarei.” If you want to utilise the services offered at our Kerikeri location, please contact our Whangarei branch on (09) 470 0433 and talk to our dedicated Equipment Service Coordinator.

Bush Rigged Forestry Excavator from CablePrice Engineering
T
he involvement that CablePrice has with the forestry industry through our core brands Hitachi, John Deere, and Scania has allowed us to evaluate the needs of our customers, study the legislation changes over the years and come up with suitable solutions for today’s situation. CablePrice Engineering has existed within the company for a number of years now, having started up in 1997.While quietly beavering away to meet the demands of the Christchurch branch in the early days, the department has enjoyed considerable growth over the years, and on the back of this success, has become what is now a national provider of engineering solutions. When the engineering department was first established, CablePrice employed Rene Bovendeerd to assist the Equipment Workshop in Christchurch as a fitter/welder and for the first few years, his skills and technical abilities were able to streamline some of the processes and alleviate the need to outsource the more complex engineering requirements that every workshop encounters. The extensive knowledge of the Hitachi product and collaboration with our technical departments gives CablePrice Engineering an ideal platform to identify solutions to meet the requirements of the New Zealand market, which not only helps 16
CablePrice
customers but also assist the technicians that would ultimately be looking after the machines once they went to work. Rene, who is now the Engineering Workshop Manager, says, “During those times, I would see machines that had heavy fabrication work to gain the relevant forestry standard with no thought whatsoever to the serviceability of the machine or the impact on cooling and overall performance.” With the goal of complementing the features of the Hitachi machine, CablePrice Engineering has gone about designing a guarding package that exceeds current legislations while maintaining machine performance and serviceability. Accessibility of doors and hatches has been a core requirement for the engineering department without compromising on overall protection. With all the design and development work carried out behind the scenes, CablePrice can turn a Hitachi L-Series base excavator into a bush-ready forestry machine quickly and for less money. “Once we had designed the basic guarding package, it was a case of working out how we could become more streamlined and provide a faster turnaround for the sales team. A lot of time is now spent at the front end by organising multiple items to be produced that make up the Forestry Build kit. These items

percent, providing additional productivity when shovelling on steep terrain. The other standard factory-fitted features specifically designed for forestry work include next size up track links and rollers, reinforced travel motor covers, idler spacers, high lift boom bracket and a heavy-duty boom. As well as the physical elements of the engineering work, the team has also worked hard to increase operator usability that allows for multi functions when using the attachments. This enables a skilled operator to use all of the machine’s functions at the same time, no matter what grapple setup is on the machine. TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS
We have gone from treating electrification primarily as a research area to having many discussions with customers who want to make the shift to sustainable transport Nils-Gunnar Vågstedt, responsible for Scania’s research into electrification
S
wedish coffee roaster Löfbergs is committed to sustainability over the company’s entire value chain—from coffee beans to coffee cup and from the farm to the end consumer. That’s why Löfbergs has now put its first Scania hybrid electric tractor unit into operation. The hybrid truck can make 15 daily round trips between the roastery plant and the warehouse in the suburb of Välsviken. When the driver reaches Karlstad city limits in south-west Sweden, she pushes a button. This changes the source of the truck’s power from Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to battery power. She makes the final leg of the journey to the city centre coffee roastery using electricity. This is just one of the many examples of the massive interest in electrification and the impact that technology is starting to have on the transport industry; an interest that is heightened as costs for batteries and other related equipment continue to decline and global standards for common infrastructure, such as charging stations, take shape. “There is a big shift right now,” Urban Nils-Gunnar Vågstedt Löfvenberg, Sales Manager within Scania Sustainable Solutions, says.“In major bus tenders in Europe today, municipalities nearly always ask for different kinds of electrified solutions. The largest interest is in fully electric buses.” Löfvenberg says that battery-powered electric buses are particularly useful in city centre traffic, but adds that in a typical urban Urban Löfvenberg area these journeys only account for about 20% of the total. “For most journeys to and from city centres, which account for about 80% of the total traffic in urban regions, hybrid electric solutions are more suitable, especially if biofuels are used,” Löfvenberg says.“These longer trips are ideal for recovering energy from braking, which means that up to 20–25% of fuel can be saved.” Nils-Gunnar Vågstedt is responsible for Scania’s research into electrification. He also sees a tremendous momentum for electrified solutions and its environmental benefits, including the zero carbon footprint, quieter vehicles, and zero particle emissions. “A lot has happened just during the last year and a half,” Vågstedt says.“We have gone from treating electrification primarily as a research area to having many discussions with customers who
want to make the shift to sustainable transport.” Today, the driving forces for electrification come mainly from cities and city regions and the fact that electrified solutions are beginning to become financially viable in their own right, without subsidies. China is the front-runner. The country accounts for more than 95% of the world’s electric city buses, a total of some 100,000 in rolling stock so far. “In urban traffic, both for city buses and to an increasing extent for distribution vehicles, the commercial driving forces are already in place,” Vågstedt says.“An electrified vehicle still has a higher initial investment cost, but it has the long-term benefit of lower operating costs. “The development for electrified long-haul transports are lagging a few years behind, but I am convinced that the same sustainable trend will occur here and that we will see the same commercial driving forces,” Vågstedt adds. Scania’s philosophy is to have a broad approach when it comes to research into sustainable technologies rather than putting all its eggs in one basket. That’s why the company continues its research into hybrid technology, plug-in hybrids, fully electric vehicles, and different kinds of biofuel. “We want to address concrete customer needs instead of convincing them of a particular solution. In cities where access to biogas for use in buses is good, biogas is a suitable solution. Another city might produce electricity A Scania electric hybrid truck operates on from its biogas; then the world’s first electric highway electric vehicles are a good solution there. “And in places where hydrogen gas derived from solar or wind power can be produced, fuel cells make suitable energy transmitters to electric vehicles,” Vågstedt adds. TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS Scania is working on several projects to help increase the use of electrification technology within both urban and long haul transport. All Scania’s hybrid vehicles are Euro 6 certified.
Scania electrification projects: from hybrids to wireless charging Tractor with a hybrid electric powertrain
Breakthrough for hybrid city bus With the launch of the hybrid powered Scania Citywide bus in 2015, Scania took another step towards carbon neutral transport solutions. The hybrid unit, comprising an electric motor and automatic clutch, is located between the engine and gearbox. The combustion engine runs on up to 100% biodiesel, providing CO2 savings of 60–65%.The year 2016 saw a major commercial breakthrough when Scania started delivering 51 of these buses to the city of Madrid.
Swedish coffee roaster Löfbergs recently put a hybrid electric truck into operation. The Scania P 320 tractor drives on electric power for nearly two kilometres on just a 10-minute charge, lowering the fuel costs by 18%, and making it possible to perform silent deliveries without disturbing residents. In parallel with the electric battery, the truck runs on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).The combination reduces carbon emissions by more than 90% in comparison with conventional diesel.
Battery electric city bus At the end of 2017, Scania will start field tests of battery-powered electric buses in the northern Swedish city of Östersund. The three Scania Citywide LF buses— with an additional three to be added during 2019—will be charged through a roofmounted pantograph at two charging stations at both ends of the 14-kilometre bus line. With a 10-minute charging time, the buses will run every 15 minutes for a total of 100 journeys each day.
Hybrid truck for quiet deliveries Scania’s 18-tonne distribution truck can operate solely on electric power for up to two kilometres. The powertrain has an electric motor that delivers 130kW (174hp). Electric operations are primarily intended for city distribution in noise sensitive areas or where exhaust fumes must be avoided. The truck was awarded the prestigious German prize, Green Truck Future Innovation 2016, by the leading trade magazine VerkehrsRundschau.

World’s first electric road In June 2016, the world’s first electric road for heavy goods traffic was inaugurated near the Swedish city of Gävle.A Scania electrically powered truck now operates the route, in open highway traffic, using conductive technology developed by Siemens. The truck operates as an electric vehicle when on the electrified road lane and as a Euro 6-certified hybrid vehicle running on biofuel at other times, such as when overtaking.
Wirelessly charged city bus In December 2016, a Scania electric hybrid city bus, equipped with wireless inductive technology, was inaugurated in Scania’s hometown of Södertälje, as part of a joint research project between Scania and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The batteries are wirelessly charged, while the bus stands at the terminal stop, providing it with the power it needs to complete its 10km route in just seven minutes.
Solar-cell produced hydrogen Together with Asko, Norway’s largest convenience goods wholesaler, Scania will start testing trucks with an electric powertrain in which the electrical energy is converted from hydrogen gas in fuel cells on-board the vehicles. The hydrogen gas will be produced locally using solar cells. The three-axle 27-tonne trucks will run in distribution service with distances of almost 500km.

NEW Wheel Loaders on tour
T
hree demonstrator models from the newgeneration Hitachi ZW-5 Wheel Loader range are currently on tour around CablePrice’s nationwide branch network before they make an appearance at National Fieldays at Mystery Creek in June, says CablePrice National Equipment Sales Manager,
Alex Kelly. “We’ve had a great response from customers with numerous 5B wheel loaders being purchased since we launched the new machines at THE Expo in March. The three model wheel loaders we have available for demonstration include a ZW180-5B with 2.8m3 bucket, ZW220-5B with 3.4m3 bucket, and the ZW310-5B with 4.2m3 bucket, which are all ideally suited for the New Zealand construction and quarrying sectors. “We also have available for demonstration, a ZW310-5B Wheel Loader that we have equipped with Ensign Log Forks. This combination will make it perfectly suited to meet any demands thrown at it, be it unloading logs, carrying or stowing logs or feeding logs onto production lines,”Alex says. The ZW-5 machines have already been operating in Australia for more than a year, where they have proven to be reliable workhorses, particularly in the forestry and construction industries. Lower fuel consumption, increased productivity, plus enhanced manoeuvrability, and operator comfort and safety are hallmarks of the Hitachi ZW-5 range, he adds. “These extremely versatile machines are suitable for an extensive range of applications in the construction, forestry, agriculture, mining, and quarrying industries. They have been developed in response to customer requirements for high productivity, lower fuel consumption, and a low total cost of ownership.” The extensive range of nine models starts with the ZW1405B through to the impressive 47-tonne ZW550-5B, all of which are equipped with powerful engines and hydraulic systems that deliver strong breakout forces and are also capable of impressive travel speeds. Automatic gearshift controls in the new generation machines have improved manoeuvrability around the job site with a feature of the new automatic transmission being an automatic shift up delay of four seconds from second to third gear.

TRACK & WHEEL “The shift changes on the ZW-5 range are based on engine load rather than RPM or speed, ensuring the transmission shifts are made at the most efficient time. This creates efficiencies when it comes to breakout work, truck loading, and working in confined spaces,”Alex says. Operator comfort and safety has been carefully considered, with several modifications made to the wheel loaders’ already spacious cab.“The heated air suspension seat can slide further back, creating more legroom, and the tilting telescopic pop-up steering column has also been repositioned to create additional space.” Other cab comforts include an MP3 input and holder, a cooler/heater box as well as a drink and lunch box holder. The temperature in the cab is regulated with effective air-conditioning, and noise levels are reduced, thanks to a high level of sound insulation. A double air-conditioner filter protects the driver when working in potentially hazardous environments, such as indoor disposal facilities or where there is dust or industrial waste. Good forward, side and rearward visibility is also critical for site safety, and the new Hitachi ZW-5 range ticks all the boxes, says Alex.“The pillar-less front windshield combined with the large sun visor creates excellent forward visibility, while the rear-
26
CablePrice
view camera automatically displays when reverse is selected, allowing the operator to see right behind the machine. The rear counterweight is also visible from both sides of the machine.” A new clutch cut-off system controls clutch disconnection timing depending on travel speed and brake pedal depression with three modes available depending on the slope of the job site. Three models—ZW140-5B, ZW370-5B and ZW550-5B—also have a Traction Control System that prevents slippage in snow, slippery, or muddy conditions by reducing the maximum rim pull. The machines come with two work modes (Standard and Power) that provide flexibility when performing particular tasks while still ensuring that low fuel consumption and maximum productivity aren’t compromised. Additional fuel savings can be achieved with an optional autoengine shutdown function that avoids fuel consumption when the machine is idling excessively. Alex says the CablePrice team is excited to be taking the new Hitachi wheel loaders around the country.“We are very pleased with the level of interest that we’ve already had in these machines and invite any interested customers to contact their local CablePrice sales representative to discuss a demonstration.”

rucks in Amuri Transport’s livestock division regularly operates on rough roads, encounter high terrain, travel long distances, and negotiate tricky entranceways to remote stations. Another layer of complexity has been the recent North Canterbury earthquakes near Amuri Transport’s base at Culverden, damaging roads, infrastructure and creating a few extra challenges for its stock drivers. When it came time for the firm to add a new workhorse to its livestock fleet with the grunt required to handle these tough conditions, a Scania R620 8x4 was the obvious choice, says Managing Director Peter Fiddes. “We already have seven Scanias in our livestock fleet, including three 620s, which have well and truly proven themselves. They do a lot of off-road and hill work in this region, which they handle very well.” Scania trucks currently make up

around 50% of Amuri Transport’s total fleet of 22 trucks and are also utilised across its bulk cartage, freight, and fertiliser spreading divisions. “We have an active truck replacement programme with a priority on our livestock division, which currently accounts for around half of our overall business. “We put a lot of focus into modernising our fleet with trucks that are fit for purpose and deliver the best service to our clients. Most of these new trucks end up being Scania.” Amuri Transport’s drivers often spend long hours behind the wheel and have been impressed by the Scania 620’s reliability, comfort, and fuel efficiency, says Peter. “We keep a close eye on fuel usage and the Scanias are definitely ahead of the other brands in our fleet.” Having good relationships with the CablePrice (NZ) Ltd sales team and the Christchurch service team (which services most of Amuri Transport’s fleet) are other important factors

Outstanding driver comfort is a hallmark of the Scania R-series trucks, with the cab easily configured and specified to meet drivers’ needs
in the purchasing decision, he says.“We bought our first Scania from CablePrice in about 2003 and have been using their Christchurch workshop since then. It’s good to deal with people we know well and with whom we’ve built up a level of trust.” Peter says the CablePrice team also has a good understanding of Amuri Transport’s specific fleet needs when it comes to speccing up its new trucks. “We don’t tend to buy off the shelf, particularly when it comes to our new stock trucks. But we don’t have to tell CablePrice, as we’ve been dealing with them long enough for them to know exactly what modifications we need.” Amuri Transport has steel bumpers and spotlights added to the front of its new R620.The truck’s front axles also have had blocks fitted to provide more height along with a few other modifications. “We’ve added a bit of length to the wheelbase, so we can accommodate 24-foot crates, extra storage boxes, and a 500-litre
fuel tank. This also gives us a bit of overhang for better traction and handling,” Peter says. Outstanding driver comfort is a hallmark of the Scania R-series trucks, with the cab easily configured and specified to meet drivers’ needs. “As far as comfort goes, the modern Scanias are hard to beat. Drivers can pretty much set up the cab however they like with a range of different seating choices. The trucks are well set up inside with good safety and media systems, including hands-free facilities for phones. Investing in good quality gear is definitely allowing us to work better.” As Amuri Transport’s truck replacement programme continues to roll out over the next three to four years, Peter expects to add several more new Scanias to the fleet, with their performance and looks on the road equally impressive. “We have a long, positive history with Scania and CablePrice, and are very happy to continue the relationship with both.” CablePrice

NEW CONCEPT FOR LOG FORWARDING
“V
ery impressive,” is how Lars Rosewarne describes the new Bell T403E Timber Truck he recently purchased from CablePrice for his Whangareibased forestry harvesting operation, Rosewarne Contractors. Since early March, the firm has been putting the Timber Truck through its paces in challenging, sandy conditions in the Pouto Forest, where it is exceeding expectations, he says. “The productivity of the truck is extremely high. This is the first full-length machine we’ve had, which has made a real difference. It can take two bays of different-sized logs, which gives us flexibility and allows us to carry 30 tonnes of logs every load. The low emission six-cylinder, turbocharged engine has plenty of power, which you need when you’re moving up to 500 or 600 tonnes of logs a day.” In anticipation of operating on the sand, Lars has fitted the Timber Truck with large flotation tyres, which are already
30
CablePrice
providing good protection for the roads.“The combination of the flotation tyres and correct axle spacing is working out really well. We’re not punching the roads out like we did with our older machines when we didn’t have the axle spacing quite right. “The flotation tyres are making it a lot easier to work on the sand and will allow us to work through the winter without destroying the roads. This was a major reason we bought the Timber Truck—to work on sand and allow us to do away with our skidders at Pouto.” The Bell T403E’s low rate of fuel consumption has been an added bonus, Lars says.“We’re only filling it up about once every four days, which we didn’t expect. It’s going really well.” The new Bell’s operator is 75-year-old Dale Right, who is more than happy with the machine. “It’s comfortable to drive, with a decent-sized cab, a good seat, and air-conditioning. It has very good lights, which are important when the forest is closing in around you.The reversing camera is pretty good, too,” Dale says.
TRACK & WHEEL
Lars runs a highly professional forestry contracting operation and is contracted to some of the largest forest owners in the upper North Island, such as Rayonier and Hancock Forest Management. CablePrice has been importing and distributing Bell equipment in New Zealand for 10 years. During this time, Lars has bought a number of different brands and models machinery from CablePrice. He decided to invest in the new Bell T403E after being particularly “stoked” with the performance of his three previous Bell machines, which had 15,000 hours on the clock. “The great experience I’ve had with the Bell brand and CablePrice made the decision easy,” Lars says. Phil McKenzie,Whangarei Equipment Sales Specialist at CablePrice, believes the concept of using a Timber Truck rather than traditional log forwarding methods could “well catch on” in the New Zealand forestry sector. “Cost per tonne with a Timber Truck can be significantly less than other systems. This is all down to its productivity, given it can carry more timber than a forwarder and has faster ground speed. The Timber Truck certainly refines the concept of log forwarding in certain applications.” Other features of the Bell T403E include rear and front chassis with belly plates, which protects the

transmission unit at the front of the truck. Raised prop shafts ensure optimal ground clearance during operation and protect against machine damage. The operator cab is a ROPS/FOPS unit with new technology Xenon lights, which protects the driver and allows the machine to be operated in darker parts of the forest without compromising safety. Lars says he values the relationship his company has with CablePrice, which dates back more than a decade. “We have gotten to know them well and built good relationships.Their salespeople are really good, and CablePrice delivers the right machines for the job when you need them. They also put a lot of effort into delivering good aftersales support and service.” Although it’s early days, Lars couldn’t be happier with the new Bell T403E. “It’s doing the job, drives well, has excellent productivity, and fuel efficiency, and does everything we want it to do.We’re really happy with it.”

tilising the Scania Communicator Fleet Management System has helped improve the entire driver culture at Southern Milk Transports, says Transport Manager Brett Hamilton. “We have noticed a marked improvement in our fleet’s fuel efficiency and driver productivity, but that’s not all. With strong engagement and incentives for improved performance, our drivers are now continually looking to improve for the benefit of both the company and themselves.” The Communicator Fleet Management System helps firms such as Southern Milk Transport to identify and use key details needed to increase the productivity of their fleet. It is already installed in all new Scania trucks, with a simple activation process providing access to a wide range of fleet data. With clear and easy-to-understand information, drivers and managers are able to understand how their fleet is performing, what is costing the firm money, and identify long-term trends and patterns. Since Southern Milk Transport’s operation was started in 2012 to transport milk throughout the lower South Island for Open Country Dairy Ltd, it has built a modern fleet of 21 Scania milk tankers. “We decided from the outset to invest in one of the leading European trucks on the market with fantastic technology. In the past, our drivers operated as individuals, but with Communicator, we are able to analyse each truck’s operation

and encourage them to drive more economically to a companywide standard. The technology has been a major ingredient in helping us to achieve Key Performance Indicators around driver performance and fuel efficiency. It is also increasing vehicle longevity as trucks last so much longer if they are driven better.” He adds that demonstrating to drivers how they are performing, especially against their workmates, as well as structuring their own financial key performance indicators is a key to the success of the initiative. “There has been a huge turnaround in culture. Our drivers have a great attitude to the programme and have embraced the Communicator training offered by CablePrice. Once we could prove the additional fuel savings as they progressed up the Communicator grades, our drivers have really got on board and their results have been outstanding.” Drivers participating in training are awarded grades from A to E.Around 25% of drivers from Southern Milk Transport have already reached A grade, with a further 50% on B grade, and the remainder achieving C grade. “Several of our drivers have the Communicator app and check their own results regularly. There is also a bit of healthy competition between the drivers, which keeps them motivated to do better.” Brett says the system was straightforward to set up and keeps getting better as the firm starts to harness more of its features. “We’re not utilising 100% of its ability yet, but find extras such as setting up alerts for vehicle management issues, ABS

faults, and things like that really good. There is so much information in the system; it’s just a matter of pulling it out.” All Southern Milk Transport’s Scania milk tankers are built in Europe using a customised spec. “Milk tankers are not easy to fit onto generic cab chassis, so some variations are required to make them better for us. CablePrice really understands our needs, and their willingness to customise a spec for us, with timely delivery from the factory certainly helps to improve our vehicles and operations.” Brett says the service relationship with CablePrice Invercargill is a major reason that Southern Milk Transport has stuck with Scania right across its fleet.“The Invercargill
branch looks after all our vehicle bookings and service and is an important part of our operation. During peak season, we have 21 trucks travelling 17,000km per day, so there is a fair demand on them.” Brett adds the CablePrice service team manages their workload around Southern Milk’s operation and has an intimate knowledge if its schedules. “They choose vehicles to pull out of the fleet at the most appropriate times, which makes our life a whole lot easier. Last season, we didn’t have one vehicle down for 24 hours, which shows the great understanding they have of our business. It’s a win-win for all parties and long may the relationship last. I’m sure it will.” CablePrice

or Matt O’Connor, digger driving is in his blood. His father Tim O’Connor is a bit of a legend in the contracting industry, having been a digger/bulldozer operator and business owner in Wellington for many years. It was no surprise then that when Matt left school at age 17, he enrolled himself in a drainage apprenticeship. During this time, Matt briefly worked for his father’s company, O’Connor Contracting, as well as various drainage and construction jobs before establishing his own company, Total Siteworks Limited in 2005. In the early days, Matt worked with a five-tonne excavator, an Isuzu 14-tonne truck and an Isuzu sixtonne Isuzu truck, one of which he inherited from his father. Initially he operated alone but as his business grew, he started employing additional staff to help with the increasing workload. Currently, Total Siteworks employs five full-time staff, working on drainage and general contracting projects, such as driveway site works, road maintenance and aggregate and asphalt cartage throughout the greater Wellington region. With the increased workload, Matt’s fleet has also grown to now include six excavators, five trucks, three trailers, four utes and various compaction equipment. Although he’s now the head of his business, Matt is still a hands-on business owner, often seen out on a jobsite operating the machines. His first Hitachi purchase was a ZX26U-5 excavator in mid-2016, which was followed up nine months later with a matching pair of ZX55U-5 excavators. “I wanted to go to one brand that could service every size. Hitachi has a strong resale value and a proven name,” Matt says. While the ZX55U-5s replaced two old five-tonne machines, the ZX26U-5 was bought to fill a gap in Matt’s machine line-up. “We have noticed the capabilities of the smaller Hitachi gear.We used to have a 1.5-tonne machine but having the 2.6-tonne machine has been noticeable, as we don’t have to bring in the bigger equipment.” Matt likes the power and versatility of his Hitachi machines as well as the great visibility when in the driver’s seat. Thanks to zero tail swing that doesn’t hang over the

TRACK & WHEEL tracks, the Hitachi mini excavator range is well suited to urban areas and narrow jobsites. The ZX55U-5 comes highly spec’d as standard with a raft of important safety features, including ROPS (rollover protective structure) and FOPS (falling object protective structure) and meets ISO safety standards. Add to this excellent performance, low fuel consumption and wide opening covers for quick maintenance, and it’s easy to understand why Hitachi mini excavators are so popular. Matt also utilises the CablePrice workshop to get both his machines and trucks serviced and has been pleased with the service and backup that he has received from the Wellington branch. “I have felt let-down by certain suppliers not having much backup in Wellington and not showing any interest in the region, but CablePrice has a very good reputation.”

hen Dion Milles of DM Plumbing and Gas Ltd recently went looking to purchase his first excavator and truck, he did what most people do these days—he started with online research and then a follow-up by good old word of mouth.“I was looking to see who could do the best combo, as I wanted to deal with just one supplier for both the truck and excavator,” he says. After talking to a number of people in the industry to get a feel for what was working for them, it quickly became obvious that everything kept pointing back to Hitachi excavators and CablePrice. “When it came down to the specs on the NLR250 Isuzu truck, combined with the ability to supply the digger that everyone was recommending, it was a no-brainer.”Having been in business for the last 14 years, Dion is no stranger to excavators. He has operated his fair share of small and large diggers over the years, but up until now, he’s mainly used contractors to do the digger work when required. While initially involved in general plumbing and gas fitting jobs around the Wellington region, Dion’s business has evolved considerably to include more plumbing, gas and drainage projects on new housing subdivisions. To keep up with these changes, Dion made the decision to employ his own drain layer, hence the need for the excavator and truck. Cameron Wait, Equipment Sales Specialist for CablePrice, said that right from the get-go, it was obvious that Dion had
36

done his homework, as he had a clear idea of what he was looking for. “Dion’s requirements included a small truck combined with a digger that could fit on its own trailer and with a mixture of digging, wide and trench buckets. The Isuzu NLR250s and Hitachi ZX17U-5 trailer package was the perfect fit for Dion’s requirements,” Cam says. While Cam sorted the excavator package, Brian McDermott, CablePrice’s Isuzu Truck Sales Specialist, spec’d up a suitable Isuzu truck that would not only fit with the application of carrying aggregate but something that could also tow the excavator. “The Isuzu truck is a perfect match with the Hitachi excavator package. It offers ute-like comfort and performance, with the ability to carry a two-tonne plus load as well as being able to easily tow the Hitachi digger.” The CablePrice finance department also played their part in packaging everything up into one simple finance package, which Dion says was hassle-free.“I was expecting it to be quite hard but it was fantastic, really straightforward, and easy.” Dion says the truck and excavator package have well and truly lived up to expectations and fulfilled his business needs. “The Isuzu NLR250 is an amazing little truck. Even with two tonne on the back, it still has plenty of power for the hills. It’s an absolutely grouse combination. The excavator is phenomenal, the controls are brilliant, and it’s a good, smooth, powerful digger. It’s a lot better than other diggers I’ve used.”

hen it came to setting up his own contracting business this year, Nathan Peipi’s decision to purchase from CablePrice was an easy one. Nathan has worked in the contracting industry for more than 25 years, and in that time, has had plenty of exposure to the Hitachi product. Prior to going out on his own, he worked as a pile foundation labourer before teaming up with a sub-contractor, who introduced him to the contracting world. Nathan has been operating diggers ever since. For the past 10 years, he worked for Downer Group, repairing and maintaining the rail lines throughout the Central North Island. During his time with the company, Nathan was able to get a real taste for Hitachi and the workshop and field support services offered by CablePrice. “We had seven hi-rail diggers, which were all Hitachi, and I was quite amazed at the support from CablePrice, especially if something went wrong. The guys were great and they were always there”. Fast forward to 2017, where Nathan has established his own company—Peipi Civil Limited—after being offered the opportunity to sub-contract under the Goodman’s umbrella. The next step for Nathan was to kit himself out for the job and being no stranger to the Hitachi brand, he knew exactly what he wanted when he contacted CablePrice.Wellington Equipment Sales Specialist, Cameron Wait, says Nathan came to him looking for a machine that was fast, powerful, smooth, and comfortable to operate. “Being involved in challenging projects, Nathan wanted a high spec 20-tonne machine, and we
worked with him closely to prepare his machine for the job,” he says. And so, Nathan walked away with a Hitachi ZX200LC-5G, complete with all the trimmings: • Wedgelock tilt hitch • Groenveld auto grease • Trimble GPS system • E-stops and battery isolators • CablePrice-built safety rails “I’ve got a lot of support out there in the industry; people from all over the country who have bought trucks and diggers through CablePrice, so I was able to get a bit of guidance from them before purchasing,” Nathan says. The Hitachi ZX200-5 offers enhanced performance, productivity and durability over the previous model. It also offers excellent fuel economy, swift front movements and easy operation. Driver comfort has also been well-thought-out in this machine, with the ability to extend the seat and console, providing a more comfortable working environment and the addition of air suspension seating to absorb fatigue-causing vibrations. Nathan concludes that the additional extras have been well worth the investment and have helped to boost his business performance out on the jobsite. “In today’s world, we have so much advanced technology in the construction industry and I can say that my machine, having all the extras, has made my life so much easier. “Having everything at your fingertips gives you so much more performance out of the day, and the contractor that you are working for is getting that extra bit out of you too. It’s just a great product overall.” CablePrice

working-time records of more than 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field. In mining, cost-efficiency is all important, and Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings.
