MANAGING DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS
Pat Ward—Managing Director
W
elcome to the spring edition of Track & Wheel. It’s been another busy year for CablePrice as we’ve focused our efforts on broadening our range of products and deepening the depth of support you receive. We announced in July the addition of McCloskey International to our stable of specialist product brands. McCloskey equipment has emerged as a global leader of screening and crushing equipment.Their products are favoured in a range of industries, including aggregate and quarrying, mining, construction, and demolition. All signs point to continued growth in New Zealand’s infrastructure and construction, so we are pleased to be expanding the range of specialist equipment available to our customers. We’re also looking forward to the success of the new Next Generation Truck Scania model. They are set to be a game changer in terms of fuel efficiency, driver safety, and lower maintenance costs. We took a large group of our New Zealand customers to Australia in April to drive the trucks for themselves before unveiling them at National Fieldays® in June. Feedback has been outstandingly positive, and it shows on the order book. In August, Scania announced it will establish its own New Zealand distributorship as part of aligning with their global strategy. From 1 January 2019, Scania NZ will manage the distribution and sales of new Scania trucks and buses. Our 27-year relationship with Scania continues to be very strong and for our customers, there will be minimal change, as CablePrice continues to provide Scania parts and aftersales services nationwide. Our General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Deon Stephens, has shifted to Scania to lead their sales team. Deon and the Scania team will be very close – literally just next door – as Scania’s office will be based next to our Gracefield site. I’m very pleased to announce Aidan Mahony, formerly our National Sales Manager – Equipment, has replaced Deon as GM of Sales. Aidan is already driving a strong focus on our core equipment brands, having worked with us in a range of senior roles and with a strong background in equipment products. We have established a new division – the Special Products Division – led by a new General Manager, Jason Cann. Jason has held a range of executive management roles in the heavy commercial and automotive industry, most recently as Country Manager of New Zealand Penske Commercial Vehicles (formerly

known as MAN Automotive Imports). Over the past year, he has supported us with several strategic projects including preparing the business case for the Special Products Division and engineering services. This new division comprises strategic and companion products, including Isuzu, HSC cranes, the recently added McCloskey range, and our engineering services. Having a dedicated focus on these brands brings expertise to specialist products in CablePrice we have not had previously. The establishment of a new division led by a General Manager brings our executive team to five. This can only mean a stronger focus for our customers and I hope you see this over the coming year. I’m proud to report our technicians have dominated the 2018 Hitachi, Isuzu, and Scania competitions. Gracefield-based technician Levi Webster won the 2018 Hitachi Top Technician Asia-Pacific Regional Final and came second in the world final. Aaron Toumoua and Jimmy Hotton, also from our Gracefield site, finished first and second respectively in the national Isuzu Technical competition and, as we go to print, are in Fujisawa, Japan competing for the world title. We are the Scania Top Team reigning champions and we hope to retain our title as a team from our Whangarei branch heads to Sweden in December to compete in the world final. I look forward to updating you on their successes in the next edition. For you, our customers, I hope you find it reassuring that your equipment and trucks are serviced by some of the best technicians, not just in New Zealand but globally. We’re very close to launching our Dealer Management System and ERP system. This is a great business enabler and we aim to keep any teething issues to a minimum as the system beds in over the coming months. We’re rapidly approaching Christmas and a well-deserved summer break. I know many of you keep working over this period so, as we do every year, we’ll have a crew available at all our branches to make any urgent repairs you might be needing over the holiday season.Wherever you are, have a safe and relaxing summer. New Account Manager for the Equipment Division
CablePrice are delighted to welcome Angelo Capon back into the fold as the latest Account Manager to join the Equipment sales team. Based at the Hamilton branch, he will be looking after the Waikato, King Country and Taranaki regions. Angelo joined CablePrice in 2011 in an Equipment Service Coordinator role at the Auckland branch. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and a real can-do attitude,” says Aidan
has involved significant procurement and contract negotiations including facilitating the replacement of the New Zealand Defence Force HCV military vehicles ($200M+). “Jason has a very strategy focused skillset which will be instrumental in driving the new Special Products Division forward,” says Pat Ward, Managing Director and COO of CablePrice. “He has already proven himself in other strategic projects within CablePrice and I am looking forward to seeing him progress the company further in his new role.”

INCREASED UPTIME, REDUCED MAINTENANCE
D
esigned to reduce the total cost of ownership, Hitachi’s new, industry-leading on-board oil monitoring sensors will enhance customers’ experiences with their Hitachi construction machinery. Increased machine availability and reduced maintenance requirements – which will save owners’ time and money – are the key benefits of this innovative feature. Hitachi’s on-board oil monitoring system continually analyses the hydraulic and engine oil condition during machine operation and detects changes against objective data. The machine transmits sensor data to Hitachi’s remote fleet monitoring system ConSite and if the oil quality has deteriorated or become contaminated, the ConSite system sends an alert to the customer and Hitachi service centre.
When an alert is sent, a physical oil sample can be taken and sent to a laboratory. From this, a complete analysis is generated and the exact cause identified. The dealer can then fix any faults quickly and conveniently on-site. Peter Finlay, CablePrice National Customer Support Manager, says,“We’ve been trialling the new oil sampling on a couple of excavators in New Zealand for some time now, with excellent results. It’s great to now be offering this technology and it benefits as standard on a range of new machines.” The oil sensors will be installed as standard from early 2019 on a range of popular Hitachi excavators, including ZX210, ZX260, ZX290, ZX360, ZX490, ZX690 and ZX890. However, Hitachi will be rolling oil sensors out on other models in the near future. Key features • Advanced Preventative Maintenance through early detection of changing oil condition. • Receive Alert Notifications via e-mail. • Monitors the hydraulic and engine oil condition during machine operation. • Reduced maintenance costs due to the reduced number of sample bottles. • No requirement to oil sample engine and hydraulic systems to meet Hitachi’s warranty requirements. • Reduced repair costs by early detection to avoid a potential system failure. n

“W
THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE BELL FAMILY
hile the B20E may be small in size, weighing in at just 15,580kg unladen, it’s still big on performance” – that’s how Aidan Mahony, CablePrice General Manager of Sales, describes the latest addition to the BELL articulated dump truck (ADT) line-up at CablePrice. The new low ground pressure (LGP) 20-tonne BELL B20E ADT is a true 6x6 with a driven rear axle. It is powered by a 170kW final Tier 4 emission compliant engine, running through an Allison 3000 series transmission. This model offers customers the benefit of high stability with very low ground pressure, along with operator safety and comfort. “The B20E is ideally suited to worksites with soft, muddy terrain or areas with sensitive ground conditions where the lowest possible ground pressure is required. A 25-tonne or 30-tonne ADT may be too big for medium-to-large scale housing developments and roading projects, for example. This type of work calls for a smaller, more nimble truck with 6x6 that can also cope with the soft ground conditions found in a lot of these applications,” says Aidan. Based on BELL B25E and B30E trucks, the B20E 6×6 has a wellproven platform, put to the test in high production environments across the globe. Like the rest of the BELL E-series ADT range, the
B20E 6×6 is designed for ease of operation and high production, having a similar power-to-weight ratio as the rest of the E-Series family of trucks, which gives the optimum balance between performance and fuel consumption. Customers have the choice between standard 20.5R25 earthmoving tyres or low profile, extra wide 800/45 R30.5 tyres that provide significantly reduced ground pressure and market-leading flotation in very muddy or soft, sandy underfoot conditions. As standard, the truck also includes benefits and features such as on-board weighing,Tip Safe, Neutral Park Brake, Downhill Speed Control, Hill Hold, and BELL’s satellite fleet management system, Fleetm@tic. Furthermore, the B20E boasts an impressive turning circle of 3.68 metres, with 800 wide tyres, and ground pressure as low as 95kPa with the wider tyres. It also has a rated payload capacity of 18,000kg, bin tipping angle of 70 degrees, and bin lowering time of just five seconds. Like all BELL ADTs, the B20E leverages off the enhancing technologies developed by BELL over the past 30 years and further cements BELL as a global market leader in the off-road haulage market. n

Unfamiliar yet familiar W
hile they may be a new member to the CablePrice family, McCloskey International has been a pioneer and leader in the screening and crushing industry since the firm’s humble beginning in Canada back in 1986. McCloskey has come a long way since it produced its first Trommel screen back in 1986. Today, it offers a complete range of screeners, crushers, conveyors, and washing systems, producing in excess of 1300 units globally each year. With innovations such as a remote control 180-degree radial stockpiling conveyor with variable discharge height for maximum stockpiling flexibility, and a solid rubber wheel drive system, it’s no surprise McCloskey is one of the leading Trommel manufacturers in North America, says Aidan Mahony, General Manager of Sales, CablePrice. “McCloskey products are produced and field-tested to perform across a number of industries, including quarrying, mining, construction and demolition recycling, waste management and recycling, composting, biomass, and landscaping. Any industry that requires an end product to be crushed, screened, or stockpiled can benefit from McCloskey equipment.” When it comes to the mobile versus stationary debate, Aidan says there are lots of advantages to using McCloskey’s mobile (track mounted) units.
8
CablePrice
“Mobile units can usually be up and running within an hour of arriving on site. Being mobile also means you can take the unit closer to the coalface, resulting in reduced travel time to get material to the screen, reduced wear and tear on other machines such as wheel loaders, and an overall increase in production capabilities.” Other benefits include easy movability from one site to another, a smaller footprint than stationary equipment, and the ability to contract screening and crushing to other sites when the unit is not in use. For operators with a smaller site, or who are looking for a compact, jaw, cone, or impact crusher, McCloskey has a range of product to suit their requirements. A great example is the J35 compact crusher. At less than 2.5 metres, it is portable enough to be easily moved around a site or moved from site to site. Other key features of the J35 crushers include a powerful 162kW engine, 890mm x 500mm jaw crusher with a crusher speed of 300rpm, and the ability to track and crush simultaneously. With the largest screening area in their class, McCloskey International S-series and R-series screeners are designed to give customers high production output and durability in demanding conditions. These range from the highly portable S80 screener offering the steepest screen angle of any three-way split screen

plant on the market and a Screenbox top deck of 3.05 metres x 1.3 metres, up to the 36,500kg triple-deck S190, featuring adjustable Screenbox angles, making it suitable for a wide range of applications including quarrying, mining, sand and gravel, coal screening, top soil, and woodchip. The S190 mixes high productivity with quality, versatility, and value. For demolition, recycling, and small heavy-duty materials, the High Energy R-range screeners are perfect, from the 15,400kg R70 to the 37,200kg R230 with a Screenbox top deck of 6.1 metres x 1.8 metres, which is one of the most robust, durable, and powerful heavy-duty screeners on the market today.
McCloskey products are produced and field-tested to perform across a number of industries Operators can also cut costs, save time, and move large amounts of material with the McCloskey range of stackers, which are available in tracked or wheeled varieties. Stackers are all about efficiency, from the speed of set-up to their high degree of mobility. With a base production capacity starting at 500TPH, and option upgrades to 800TPH, McCloskey have designed their range of stackers based on customer feedback to ensure they deliver across a wide range of industries and applications. HITACHI TECHNICIAN A GLOBAL WINNER
C
ablePrice Wellington technician Levi Webster has capped off a great year by placing second in the 2018 Hitachi Top Technician world final, held in Tokyo in October. Earlier in the year, Levi won the CablePrice Hitachi national final and went on to represent New Zealand at the Asia-Pacific regional final in Singapore in September, where he placed first. The event was based around Hitachi’s ZX200-5G range of excavators and Levi was up against five other technicians including, for the first time, representatives from Myanmar and the Philippines. At the world final in Tokyo, he represented both CablePrice and Hitachi Construction Machinery Asia & Pacific (HMAP) and competed against nine other technicians to take second place. Levi’s trainer, Darren O’Connor, says Levi put his best foot forward in Tokyo.“The pressure was certainly very intense on the day but Levi did himself proud and represented CablePrice and the Asia Pacific region with 100% commitment.” CablePrice is the New Zealand distributor and technical support for Hitachi construction machinery. It has a proud history in the 11 years the Asia-Pacific competition has been running, with its technicians qualifying for the world final seven times and winning twice. Darren has been training Hitachi technicians in preparation for the various competitions for the last 10 years. The events are
open to technicians who have more than two years’ experience in working with Hitachi machinery but no more than 15 years’ experience. He takes technicians through general product knowledge and theory, fault detection and diagnosis, and problem-solving. He says a good technician is someone who is open and willing to receive new information and change their approach if need be. “As New Zealanders, we often do things differently – the old Kiwi ingenuity – but I advise all the technicians to think like the factory engineers and do what the manual says to do.There needs to be a process. Solving problems relies on good product knowledge and a solid process.” Participation of technicians in the competitions has helped raise the overall standard of product knowledge and technical know-how across the board, Darren says. “Even technicians who don’t get through a qualifying round say that just taking part meant that they had to research information they didn’t know prior. Those who do compete also share their new knowledge with others in their workshops. Ultimately, it means that they provide a better service to customers.” James Magill, CablePrice Wellington Operations Manager, who oversees Levi, said the team was very proud of his success. “These achievements are great recognition of how hard Levi has worked and prepared and his real commitment to his trade.” n CablePrice

ISUZU TRUCK TECHNICIANS TO REPRESENT NZ AT GLOBAL COMPETITION
T
he country’s best Isuzu technicians, who work at CablePrice in Gracefield,Wellington, are soon off to the international final of the annual Isuzu World Technical Competition. Aaron Toumoua and Jimmy Hotton finished first and second after the two rounds of the national heats back in June and will now travel to Fujisawa, Japan in November to represent Isuzu NZ and CablePrice – and New Zealand – on the world stage. Colloquially known as the ‘I-1 Grand Prix’, the event will see Aaron and Jimmy compete against 10 other countries in the Category A Commercial Vehicle (CV) division. Category A is for countries that enforce demanding emission regulations, including requiring vehicles to comply with Euro 5 or higher standards. Competitors will have to complete a series of practical and theory tests designed to cover all aspects of their work, from vehicle inspection and systems management diagnostics to repair tests and mechanical measuring. The Isuzu World Technical Competition is now in its 13th year and this is the second time in two years that CablePrice truck technicians have taken part in the international event. CablePrice Wellington Operations Manager James Magill said Aaron and Jimmy were incredibly driven and motivated and this was demonstrated during the national finals.
“Having such talented technicians ultimately benefits the New Zealand truck customer, who can buy an Isuzu truck knowing there’s a world-class team of professionals ready to support their investment and business.” n

ack in September 2017, the All Torque, All Noise team of CablePrice’s Whangarei branch competed against three other CablePrice branches in the Scania Top Team National Final, including Christchurch branch, who currently hold the title of Scania Top Team world champions. With a nine-point lead against the defending champions in the final round, All Torque, All Noise scored themselves a place in the Scania Top Team Regional Final, which was hosted in Kuala Lumpur in September this year. The Whangarei team were faced with some stiff competition, coming head to head with six other teams from the Asia-Pacific, including China, Iran, South Korea, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia The boys worked in some testing conditions, having to complete a range of challenging tasks in Electrical station, Fuel System station, Bus station, Engine station, and Theory station – all in South-East Asia’s oppressive heat and humidity. Despite it all, the Whangarei team fought hard and came out on top, winning the regional competition and qualifying them as one of 12 teams globally to attend the Top Team World Final

The Scania Top Team World Final can be followed on Facebook, with the top four countries from the initial round competing in a live-streamed super final. n
CABLEPRICE NELSON BRANCH GETS A MAKEOVER
C
ablePrice Nelson has opened a new purpose-built branch that is twice as big as its former building to meet growing demand from Nelson and Marlborough forestry and construction clients. The new high-spec building, which opened in late August, is located on the same site at 5 Kotua Place, Stoke, Richmond. It features four machinery bays, replacing the original two, allowing the team to service up to five machines at a time undercover. The new building also includes a showroom to display equipment brands, a fully stocked parts department, a welcoming service reception, and a customer waiting lounge. The workshop features state-of-the-art tooling, including a specialist flow meter, thermal imaging equipment with data logging and a hydraulic cylinder reconditioning table. Since the branch opened, Operations Manager Justin MacLean has hired three new technicians to keep up with demand, including two based in Marlborough. The additions take the team to 14 staff, including one sales rep and two apprentices. “The forestry and construction sectors are thriving in our region. With the larger space and bigger team, we’re thrilled we can offer a faster turnaround time on servicing, both in our workshop or on site,” explains Justin. Customers and staff have been very positive about the new building. “Customers like that they can get their machines into the workshop faster, as we have more room. And the team is loving the new clean, bright workspace too. It’s a win-win for everyone.” The Nelson team recently recruited a Service Advisor to work proactively for clients. Thanks to the sophistication of modern
Hitachi, Bell, and John Deere GPS systems, the Service Adviser uses prompts or alerts sent from the machine and proactively contacts clients to advise that their machine is due for a scheduled service or requires repair. “Rather than the customers having to contact us to book in a service, the Service Advisor can arrange a suitable time for the machine to come into the workshop or schedule a field service technician to go to site to carry out the service,” Justin says. “This ensures our customers are receiving maximum uptime from their machinery and lessens the risk of major component failure. It also allows us to coordinate parts and service so the right part is available and fitted at the right time, reducing downtime. “We schedule a lot of our customer repair and maintenance jobs for Friday afternoons and Saturdays, particularly for forestry clients. Fixing their machines during their quieter periods is just another way we add value for our customers.” n

018 marked the 50th year of National Fieldays®, which sees hordes of people flock to Hamilton’s Mystery Creek to experience the latest and greatest of products and innovations that the agribusiness sector has to offer. For CablePrice, this year’s event was particularly significant, as the company took the opportunity to launch Scania’s New Generation Truck series to the New Zealand market. After a decade of research and development, Scania’s New Truck Generation offers a completely new cab range, with an even wider product offering, including the new S-cab with flat floor and L-cab – an entirely new low-entry cab series designed for urban environment applications such as local distribution, waste, and construction. Despite the team enduring torrential rain and winds over the preceding week of set-up, and the intermittent downpours during day one, the weather improved and Mystery Creek was bathed in sunlight for the remaining three days of the event. This brought with it record high foot traffic, with 35,704 people through the gates on Thursday alone. CablePrice had an extensive range of machinery and trucks on display, including Hitachi ZX17U-5, ZX55U-5, ZX135US-5B, and ZX210LC-5B excavators; ZW30, ZW40, ZW80, ZW140-5B, and ZW310-5B wheel loaders; Bell B30E ADT; and John Deere JD648L skidder on the equipment side in addition to Scania trucks. NEW SERIES OF MINING EXCAVATORS
H
itachi Construction Machinery Co. have developed a new and exciting generation of mining excavators, which are set to hit the global market from April 2019. The EX-7 large excavator series, which ranges in size from 100 to 800 tonnes, marks a turning point in the global mining industry as the market leverages off emerging technologies that see mining machines connected remotely to online servers, collecting valuable data and insights. This information will be used by Hitachi customers to optimise the efficiency, safety, and productivity at mining job sites worldwide. The EX1200-7 – the smallest of the new EX-7 range – incorporates numerous new and upgraded productivity, safety, and connectivity features, set to improve the overall bottom line of mining projects. Fuel consumption optimisation technologies The EX1200-7 excavator incorporates a number of fuel consumption optimisation technologies, resulting in reduced operating costs. • The EX1200-7 can be configured with a choice of Cummins engines, either Tier 4 Final (T4F) or Fuel Consumption Optimisation (FCO), depending on customer’s preferences for fuel economy or environmental sustainability. • The arm and bucket also feature new regeneration valves to recycle oil through the cylinder rods, which optimises fuel consumption and increases operating speed when crowd in the bucket and arm. • Furthermore, the radiator fan is now driven by a hydraulic motor from the direct belt drive. Not only does this mean the larger oil cooker fan can operate at lower speeds, conserving energy and maintaining an optimal temperature, but it also no longer requires a fan belt, saving on maintenance time. Reliability and durability Hitachi have made mechanical and structural improvements to the EX1200-7 to enhance the reliability and durability of the machine. • Contamination sensors on hydraulic pumps, centre joints, and the swing motor can detect contaminants that may cause damage to the hydraulic system. The sensors alert the operator of potential contaminants and record the fault in the Data Logging Unit, with the added capability of remotely advising maintenance personnel. • An optional automatic lubrication system is provided for the BE front attachment

option, enabling automatic lubrication of all grease points of the machine, including the bucket pins. • The machine has also undergone structural improvement, where the track frame’s swing circle has been upgraded from a cast to forge structure and top plate thickness increased from 50mm to 55mm for enhanced strength and durability. Safety Improved safety features ensure maintenance, troubleshooting, and accessibility can be performed at reduced risk. • The EX1200-7 now includes a pushbuttontype engine stop switch, located conveniently near maintenance points. When the switch is engaged, the engine will not start and maintenance can be performed safely. • The machine is also equipped with an MDG15 regulation standard dual isolator switch for the engine starter and battery, which aids in safely troubleshooting and downloading machine information. • Hitachi has included a slide ladder as standard as well, to allow easy access to the machine. Operability and productivity The EX1200-7 incorporates upgraded operating features to ensure drivers work as productively and comfortably as possible. • Numerous new in-cab features have been added to improve the driver operating experience, including an improved seveninch high-definition multifunctional screen and rear-view at a glance. The monitor display gives a comprehensive snapshot of key information and the frequently used switches are arranged on the right-hand side console, with the less commonly used on the left-hand side, for ease of operation. • In addition, the cab window has additional reinforcement to reduce cab noise and the right-hand side window has two rails as opposed to the original four rails, for enhanced visibility from the driver’s seat. The front and side cab windows also include the option of a roll-up screen, which includes 40% visual ray transparency. • Furthermore, the BE bucket has increased capacity from 6.7m3 to 7.0m3 for optimised matching to the 60-tonne class dump truck such as the Bell B60E ADT, for enhanced productivity. With the EX1200-7 available for order today, get in touch with your local CablePrice Equipment Sales Specialist for more information on this exciting new generation of mining excavators. n

SAFEGUARD YOUR COMPANY WITH AN EQUIPLAN SERVICE CONTRACT
T
he modern Hitachi is a highly productive and sophisticated machine that, when maintained correctly, will provide thousands of hours of reliable service and who better to maintain your Hitachi than the experts, CablePrice. In response to feedback from our valued Hitachi customers, CablePrice are excited to introduce EquiPlan tailored service packages, available with all new Hitachi Construction machine purchases (seven tonnes and larger) across our extensive range of excavators, wheel loaders, and rigid dump trucks. Traditionally, customers have purchased their Hitachi machinery with an extended powertrain warranty option applied. This warranty covers the machine for major failures to the engine and hydraulic systems for up to 48 months or 8000 hours depending on the machine size.A condition of this extended powertrain warranty has always been the requirement to have the machine serviced by an authorised Hitachi service agent at the scheduled service intervals. This is where our new EquiPlan comes into play, explains Peter Finlay, CablePrice National Customer Support Manager. “EquiPlan covers scheduled machine servicing for the FULL term of the warranty period, or longer if desired. All scheduled oil changes (including oil and filter), oil sampling, belt replacements, and software upgrades are included in the package. This is a great benefit to customers, as they’re able to easily manage their servicing requirements and have a clear understanding of the service costs to recover when pricing jobs, as EquiPlan is charged based on machine hours.” Machine hours are measured using Hitachi’s on-board
telematics system, ConSite, to monitor the actual operating hours of the machine. It also means that when a service interval is reached, a CablePrice staff member can contact the machine owner to arrange a suitable time to have the service performed rather than the customer having to keep track of it and arranging workshop bookings themselves. Another benefit of EquiPlan is the fixed rate for the contract term, so the rate you’re paying today will be the same rate you’re paying at the end of the contract. This safeguards your business from any future rate increases in relation to scheduled parts and labour rates. Peter says,“There are two ways a customer can set up their EquiPlan contact. Option one would be to start the payments at the end of the free servicing period or option two, where payments start from day one and take advantage of spreading the payments over a longer period, resulting in a lower per-hour rate. Either option has no impact on the total amount paid over the term of the contract.” Customers who take out a service contract will also enjoy an extended one-year powertrain warranty at no additional cost. This means, in many cases, up to 60 months (5 years) or 10,000 hours cover*. CABLEPRICE ESTABLISHES A SPECIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION
D
riving a stronger focus on its specialist brands and companion equipment products, CablePrice has established a Special Products Division covering HSC Cranes, McCloskey Equipment, industrial engines, machinery hitches, buckets, and track gear. This new division is being led by a new General Manager, Jason Cann, who starts in December 2018. Former General Manager of New Zealand Penske Commercial Vehicles, Jason has worked with CablePrice over the past 18 months on strategic projects, including engineering services, to strengthen engineering capability. Pat Ward, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of CablePrice, says the establishment of the new division led by a new General Manager, brings business capability and a focus to specialist products in CablePrice that has not previously existed. “With our deep knowledge of equipment coupled with our premium product line, we want to maximise the potential to sell more of our specialist products to customers who need them. “New Zealand’s infrastructure, forestry, aggregate, and associated sectors are booming and all signs point to continued growth. With our wide range of specialist brands and companion equipment products serving these industries, it made sense to establish a division focused exclusively on these products. “We want to become the one-stop-shop for specialist products in these industries. We’re already doing that in the quarry industry where our products span the entire supply chain, starting from the point of extraction, through to screening, processing, crushing, and then transport to the end customer. The breadth of our product range is matched by our support infrastructure. There’s enormous potential to do this across many industries and that’s what Jason and the team will be driving for.”
18
CablePrice
The new division will focus on growing market share of specialist brands, including Isuzu trucks and engines, HSC Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction cranes, and McCloskey Quarry equipment. “Shifting these brands into our Special Products Division will increase focus and momentum in the market.” CablePrice is evaluating adding other new brands to meet changing demands in the infrastructure, construction, and quarrying industries.“We’re exploring relationships with brands complementary to what we already sell and what we’re suited to support.” In July, CablePrice secured the distribution rights for McCloskey International, a company designing and making crushers, screeners, stacking conveyors, and washing systems. McCloskey has emerged as a global leader with products recognised as the best in their field.Their equipment is used in a range of industries including aggregate and quarrying, mining, construction and demolition, waste management and recycling, and landscaping and composting. “With our existing product range and loyal customer base, McCloskey was an obvious choice for us,”explains Pat.“McCloskey have tripled in size over recent years. Our association with them means we’ll have access to their growing product line.” Alongside the Special Products Division, the new General Manager of Sales,Aidan Mahony, will focus on CablePrice’s core equipment products – Hitachi, John Deere and Bell. Pat says this distinction will lift the focus and performance of both equipment products and special products. “It allows our equipment sales force to focus on even better service delivery to long-established construction and forestry equipment customers, and leverage opportunities for special products and companion products. This shift makes us stronger on all counts.” n

Isuzu engines are at the forefront of diesel engine technology and are used in a wide variety of industries including construction, mining, marine and agriculture along with powering Isuzu trucks and utes.
•
HSC cranes HSC cranes are globally recognised as the world’s best crawler cranes. Crawler cranes offer excellent mobility over soft services. These multi-purpose cranes can be used in a broad range of applications, ranging from construction to civil engineering and port cargo handling. “With the current construction boom, there is enormous potential to sell more of these here in New Zealand,” says Pat.

uckland civil construction firm Hopper Construction has purchased two exciting new machines, which are the first models of their kind to be sold into
New Zealand. The first is the Hitachi ZX350LG5B excavator, packed with features, including new state-of-the-art hydraulic and electronic technology. Hopper Construction is currently putting this machine through its paces on complex canal and marina construction work at Marsden Cove – a unique residential marine village being developed within the mouth of the Whangarei Harbour. The firm’s other ‘first’ is a joystickoperated John Deere 670GP grader, which is hard at work at the new Kumeu town centre commercial development. Hopper Construction’s Plant Manager, Wayne Vincent, says the big Hitachi is handling the canal work at Marsden Cove with ease, and it has ‘fitted nicely’ into the firm’s fleet. “The excavator arrived in February and worked right through a pretty rough winter, to start the summer season with 1000 hours on the clock. We’ve been impressed with its smooth operation, power, and fuel economy. These three things don’t normally go hand in hand, so Hitachi seems to have cracked the technology.” This trifecta of benefits is largely due to the ZX350-5B’s new TRIAS hydraulic system – one of the machine’s standout features. The system is equipped with three pumps that supply sufficient amounts of pressurised oil to each
actuator. The TRIAS system has two additional spools in the control valve, making it easier to install attachments. “We can change buckets with the flick of a wrist now,” says Wayne. The ZX350-5B has a new low emission engine, with horsepower 10% greater than the previous model to 202kW, which is now electronically controlled with a common rail fuel injection. This results in even greater fuel efficiency while maintaining a high level of productivity. According to Wayne, the new Hitachi has also impressed its operator, Ben McLean, who has been with Hopper Construction for more than 20 years. “Ben’s first preference was a Hitachi machine, which we definitely considered during the purchase process. He is very impressed with the ZX350-5B’s smooth operation and comfort, which is important when our guys spend 10–12 hours a day at work. Ben is a big guy and loves the large seat and plenty of leg room. The Hitachi cabs have evolved considerably over the last five years.” To assist with its precision canal cutting work, Hopper Construction added a 3D GPS to the ZX350-5B. At the Kumeu town centre project, Hopper Construction’s new John Deere 670GP grader has also impressed, says Wayne. “There is a fair bit of roading work involved, which was one of the reasons for choosing this machine, as it was well spec’ed with the joystick controls and GPS gear. Our operators love the userfriendliness of the controls. The functions are well laid out and easy to use. One of our young guys, who has been with us a
few years, jumped on the machine and was comfortable with it very quickly.” The grader’s nine-litre, 172kW engine delivers plenty of power, and with a taller mainframe than previous models, it is able to shoulder larger loads and navigate more easily over obstacles. Wayne says having the CablePrice branch located nearby at Silverdale is another ‘big plus’ and a factor influencing Hopper Construction’s purchasing decisions. “Having the boys just up the road gives us a lot of confidence. We’ve purchased several other Hitachi machines over the last financial year and put a lot of maintenance work through the CablePrice workshop. If we have an issue in our fleet, they never leave us hanging, which is important.” During the ‘solid’ relationship Hopper Construction has developed with CablePrice’s Silverdale branch over the last few years,Wayne has enjoyed seeing a number of CablePrice staff start as apprentices and move on to become leading technicians. “There is great depth on the service team at CablePrice. They are quiet giants up there.” He says the sales process has also been effortless with Equipment Sales Specialist, Luke Larsen. “Everything went very smoothly. We’ve dealt with Luke since he qualified as a mechanic, then worked his way up to running the Silverdale branch, and moving into sales. They’re a good team, and we value the good working relationship we have with them.” n

Set for summer
H
imatangi Transport is geared up to deliver maximum productivity during the busy summer season following the addition of a new Hitachi ZW140-5B wheel loader and Scania P400 4x4 truck to its fleet. Simon Pedersen, who owns the Manawatu ground spreading and rural cartage firm with his wife Sue, says the wheel loader, which has been set up with a factory quick-hitch and bucket, and local forks, has proved a big hit with his team of operators. “All of our guys use the wheel 24
CablePrice
loader and they love it. The quickhitch is so easy to use and allows them to switch straight over to the forks without getting out of the cab. Having one machine to do both jobs is perfect, and it can be operated by someone without a forklift licence. Our old forklift had seen better days, and I wouldn’t bother replacing it now.” The wheel loader was Simon and Sue’s first purchase from CablePrice, and he says going for the Hitachi brand was a ‘no-brainer’ after getting a great run out of their previous Hitachi LX100 wheel loader.
“Our old Hitachi machine was a 1990 model and had done 23,000 hours without having the engine or transmission touched. We on-sold it when we bought the new one, and it’s still going strong.” The new ZW140-5B machine’s 5.2-litre, four-cylinder, water-cooled turbo engine enables a powerful digging performance, impressive travel speeds, and delivers excellent fuel consumption. The machine’s compact size is another plus, given it spends considerable time working inside a shed at Himatangi Transport’s yard. Great productivity, comfort

in the cab, including a heated airsuspension seat, manoervrability, and power are other positives noted by Simon’s team. “It is definitely smoother and quicker, and having all the controls on the joystick is far superior to our old machine. Our operators don’t have to take their hands off the steering wheel, so safety is also much better. The machine’s power and productivity is great. It does what we want with ease.” Simon says the new Hitachi has also given him and Sue peace of mind, as while their old machine had been incredibly reliable, given its age, they knew a breakdown was increasingly likely. “Reliability is so important because if the wheel loader stops, our whole business stops. I’m glad we made the decision to buy a new machine, which came with three years free servicing and great back-up and support from CablePrice.” Simon has worked for Himatangi Transport for 27 years and managed it for 10 years prior to 2014 when he and Sue purchased the firm from his parents, who had previously bought the longstanding business in 1976. Since taking over, the couple has introduced a vehicle replacement programme, which led to the purchase of the wheel loader and the new Scania P400 4x4 truck with fertiliser hopper bin.
“After we ordered the wheel loader from CablePrice Sales Specialist, Cameron Wait, we got talking to Commercial Vehicle Sales Specialist, Mark Nurse, about Scania trucks and ordered one straight away. The purchase process with both Cameron and Mark was easy. They got back to me straightaway with quotes. I said yes, and we changed a few bits and pieces and the job was done.” This is the first Scania truck on the Himatangi Transport fleet, which was chosen for its power and ability to tow one of the firm’s bigger trailers, he says. “The truck is definitely fit for purpose and has helped to increase our productivity during the busy cropping season. It has a permanent driver, Aaron, who absolutely loves it. He says it’s smooth to drive, quiet, very powerful, and goes great offroad, making easy work of any harder going. Fuel economy is hard to gauge as the truck is pushing a lot of extra weight along and is doing different work to the rest of the trucks in our fleet, but I’d say there is not too much difference between them.” Overall, Simon says he and Sue are very happy with their new wheel loader and truck as well as the overall purchasing process. “We would definitely consider using CablePrice again. They were open to discussion and nothing was an issue. I give them top marks.” n

JOHN DEERE HITS THE TARGET
D
avy Garland, owneroperator of Wairarapa firm, Log Works, says the two brand-new pieces of John Deere forestry equipment he has purchased in the last year have provided an unexpected spinoff – he no longer has to work weekends. “We used to have to work weekends to catch up on the productivity we lost when our old gear broke down. With the new John Deere tracked harvester and log loader in the fleet, all the work is done during the week now.” Davy set up Log Works six years ago, which contracts to Farman Turkington Forestry to harvest wood lots throughout the Wairarapa region. He says he had tried “pretty much every brand of forestry equipment out there” before purchasing 26
CablePrice
a second-hand John Deere forwarder a couple of years ago. This led to a relationship with CablePrice, and after considerable research, he invested in a brand-new 909MH tracked harvester, fitted with a Southstar QS600 processing head, which arrived in December 2017. Dave followed this up with a 2156G swing machine (crawler log loader) fitted with an Ensign 1730 grapple, which he took possession of a few months ago. “I chose John Deere for its productivity and cost-effectiveness per tonne. It’s not the cheapest or most expensive brand out there, but I feel it is the most productive per dollar spent.” Davy is driving the 2156G log loader himself and couldn’t be happier with the machine, which is powered by a John Deere PowerTech Plus 6.8-litre engine, delivering 122kW/164hp.
“It’s the nicest loader I’ve ever driven and because it is designed and built in the factory to throw logs around, the productivity is fantastic. I’d say it is noticeably faster than my old loader, and the fuel economy is great. We set some pretty big targets when it comes to productivity, and this machine is definitely hitting them.” The purchase process was very quick, as CablePrice happened to have a 2156G model in stock when Davy was looking for a new machine. “Within a week, the grapple was put on the end, the machine was delivered and rolled off the truck, and we put it to work straightaway. It was great having a purpose-built machine with no build time to worry about.” He says the loader cab is so roomy; his team have nicknamed it ‘the office’.
TRACK & WHEEL
“The cab has plenty of room and is really quiet. I wear earmuffs in every other machine on our fleet except this one. Another couple of great features are the rear entry door, and windows in the floor, which provide good visibility when I’m driving,” he says. The operator’s height from ground (eye level) of 4.35 metres provides great visibility, as do the cab’s injection-moulded polycarbonate windows. Fatigue-beating creature comforts in the cab include climate control, heated/cooled seats, and ergonomic controls. Both machines boast large fuel tank capacity with the 2156G carrying 800 litres and the 909MH 1080 litres of fuel, resulting in less refuelling downtime per week. Davy has also been impressed with the power in the 10.97-metre boom, and says it is “very quick” for a long boom.
The 909MH harvester, powered by a John Deere PowerTech Plus 6090H nine-litre engine delivering 224kW/300hp has also proven to be a trusty, reliable workhorse in the forest, with Davy’s operator ‘thriving’ in the new machine, he says. “He’s driven several other harvesters during his career but says this is the best one. It’s been going really well, with the jump in productivity since we got it enabling me to justify buying the new loader as well. It’s done everything I expected, and my expectations were high.” The 909MH has 110,000Nm of swing torque, providing more power to boost productivity. “The base of the 909MH provides plenty of oil to the head, so it really pumps the wood through,” says Davy. Dealing with CablePrice has been a positive experience, he says.
“They are professional to deal with and it’s great having the service team and Head Office in close proximity in Wellington. On the rare occasion we’ve needed them onsite, they’ve been great.” With the Log Works team moving to new forests every few months, having reliable, productive equipment is essential, he says. “If we’re not efficient, we don’t compete. Having good gear also helps us to attract and retain good staff, which is definitely an issue in the industry at the moment. Good operators do less damage to the machines and achieve more production, generating greater return.” Now Davy is sold on the John Deere brand, he expects more future purchases to come. “CablePrice will definitely be the first port of call.” n CablePrice

MONTABERT CONTINUES TO BREAK
A
NEW GROUND
s the old saying goes, what goes up must come down. With the current infrastructure and construction boom, the building process often begins with demolition. Regarded as best in their class for demolition and breaking equipment, Montabert has always led the way, starting with the invention of the world’s first hydraulic paving breaker in 1921. These days, Montabert has attachments for a wide range of uses, including site preparation and land reclamation, rock quarrying and

mining, low-grade demolition such as concrete and paving, and multi-storey building demolition. CablePrice has been the New Zealand distributor of Montabert breakers since the 1990s, with one of their largest Montabert customers being Vuksich and Borich (NZ) Ltd. The Auckland-based civil engineering company boasts a huge range of Montabert breakers, which Plant and Transport Manager Murray George says, are primarily used for bulk excavation work such as breaking up rock and hard material. The Montabert range had good
specifications such as air kits for underwater work and silencing kits for confined spaces, enabling the company to undertake a variety of projects, Murray says. “Just about every project we’re involved with uses Montabert breakers.” Local Vuksich and Borich projects include preparing ground for the new SkyCity convention centre, the Fabric apartment complex in Onehunga, the Commercial Bay development and several Ministry of Justice projects, such as site preparation at Mt Eden and Paremoremo prisons and the Auckland
TRACK & WHEEL South Corrections Facility in Wiri. Offshore projects include excavating shipping channel in the remote islands of Tavalu, creating new islands and resorts off Fiji through land reclamation, and excavating a site in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea for a new conference facility. “With the Port Moresby project, we used the big Montabert V55 breakers with our 50-tonne excavators. Montabert are very good breakers and we’ll continue with the brand,” says Murray George. Murray Wilkinson, Equipment Parts Manager at CablePrice, says the Montabert product range starts with the SC6, ideally suited for those small jobs with a carrier range weight of 0.7 to 1.2 tonnes, right up to the heavyduty V65 breaker, with a carrier range weight of 45 to 90 tonnes for the really big jobs. “Montabert breakers come standard as Metro Silenced, providing low noise emissions ideal for contractors working in metropolitan areas and the great shock absorbers on these breakers mean it is a much more pleasant experience for the operator as well.” The all-purpose, versatile ‘Silver Clip’ (SC) range of light breakers is very popular with customers working on the smaller jobs such as a plumber and gas fitter who needs to break concrete to get access to underground pipes. They want a tool they can use with their mini-excavator to get the job done fast and accurately. “In particular, our Hitachi Mini excavator customers favour the SC12 with its 1.2 to 2.2-tonne operating weight as it’s a perfect match with the Hitachi ZX17U-5,” explains Murray. At the other end of the scale, the ‘V’ model excels in hard rock quarries by providing the right amount of energy and frequency variation to perform no matter what ground hardness. Montabert’s heavy ‘V’ model breakers are designed for all types of carriers, from 18 to 90 tonnes. It isn’t easy to find a carrier on which Montabert heavy breakers cannot be mounted. “Montabert products are renowned for their reliability, high production value, and low operating costs. They are the Rolls Royce of breakers. You can’t get anything better on the market globally.”

UNSURPASSED DIESEL INDUSTRIAL
ENGINE TECHNOLOGY
T
he benefits of Isuzu Industrial diesel engines can be summed up in just three words, says Peter Dolden, Isuzu parts manager at CablePrice Wellington: performance, reliability, and versatility. From manufacturing the first Japanese industrial diesel engine to becoming the world’s largest commercial producer with more than 25 million units, Isuzu has remained at the forefront of diesel engine technology. Peter Dolden said this popularity was no surprise as Isuzu diesel engines offer unparalleled performance and have a legendary reputation for reliability, while Isuzu’s innovative technologies also ensured its diesel engines were quieter, more efficient, and cleaner burning. CablePrice, as appointed by Isuzu Australia Limited, is the official authorised distributor for Isuzu Industrial and Marine engines in New Zealand. CablePrice offers more than 30 different Isuzu engine models, with power outputs ranging from 11.8 to beyond 500hp. These models serve a huge range of industries here in New Zealand, including mining, forestry, farming, fishing, aquaculture, construction, and retail. They are used widely in excavators, wheel loaders, fork trucks, skid steer loaders, air compressors, generators, pumps, and other niche equipment. Isuzu engines can handle incredibly diverse conditions 30
CablePrice
and climates, from the Australian outback – where they are used to power water pumps on fire trucks – to Antarctica where they power snowmobiles. “This means they can handle anything that New Zealand weather and conditions throw at them. These engines are valued for their combination of power, performance, reliability, and sure-starting dependability. Customers also like the fact that Isuzu’s advanced technology is continually raising the standards for low-noise, low-pollution industrial diesel,” says Peter. Marlborough-based business BossAqua designs, manufactures, and exports specialised net washing equipment for the aquaculture industry. The company has developed the first fully automated net cleaning robot in the world. Owner Andy Fairhall said the company used Isuzu engines as the primary power source for its net cleaning robots. As he puts it, the Isuzu engines are the “heart of the machines”. The engines power the robots’ high-pressure water pumps, hydraulics, and various ancillary systems. Andy said he chose Isuzu because it offers a superior engine that is good value for money. The engines could also handle the specific challenges of the aquaculture sector and had helped enable them to grow the business. “Also, the supply chain offered by CablePrice has really
TRACK & WHEEL helped us. Peter (Dolden) sorted us out with our first Isuzu engine in just a couple of weeks. He did a fantastic job.” Isuzu engines benefit from Isuzu’s commitment to tackle global environmental pollution as the company is putting its efforts into the development of clean diesel engines, with the aim of reducing emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Diesel engines combine excellent fuel efficiency with relatively low carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, so are now viewed as having immense potential to help prevent global warming and contribute to environmental preservation. The engines can also be run on other oils such as vegetable oils, synthetic oils, etc. Another reason companies around the country have chosen Isuzu diesel engines as indispensable partners for their businesses is down to the versatility of the engines’ applications, Peter said. Power output capacity from a few to tens of thousands of horsepower means diesel engines are employed as power sources for everything from ships, trucks, and construction equipment to ride-on lawnmowers, motorboats, fire-fighting pumps, and electric power generators for factories or buildings. No other internal combustion engine boasts such a wide range of potential applications. Peter said CablePrice has the local engineering expertise and knowledge to ensure that Isuzu engines meet the
particular requirements of customers. CablePrice offers the DIAS system – Diesel Inquiry Assessment System – to identify the correct Isuzu engine for customer needs. Customers simply specify their application requirements and the DIAS provides a recommendation of suitable engine units to meet those requirements. CablePrice also offers the full range of Isuzu engine accessories, including engine control panel units, cooling packages, air cleaner units, exhaust systems, engine mount skids, engine wiring looms, Hayes couplings, housing adaptors, and auxiliary items. “Incorporating Isuzu engine’s full range of accessories allows CablePrice to help customers to customise their power unit to suit their needs before they buy. We can design and deliver a solution for most applications.” CablePrice Isuzu technicians are among the best in the business. For the last two years, CablePrice technicians have taken part in the annual Isuzu World Technical Competition in Japan. “Having such talented technicians ultimately benefits the New Zealand customer, who can buy an Isuzu engine knowing there’s a world-class team of professionals ready to support their investment and business,” says Peter. ON THE ROAD S cania New Generation Trucks are now available in New Zealand and are set to be a game changer in terms of fuel efficiency, driver safety, and lower maintenance costs. Dylan Brander, CablePrice National Product Manager, Commercial Vehicles, says two evaluation units have been with CablePrice customers since the beginning of May with a third unit used for customer demonstrations around the country. Both customers – one a Northland forestry business and the other a South Island freight business – were extremely impressed with their unit’s performance. The freight business customer was using the 620hp S-series variant for double-shift daily return trips between Invercargill and Christchurch – more than 1000km per day. Dylan said he had reported that fuel consumption was consistently reduced by more than
10%. The customer, who already has an existing fleet of Scania, said the overall improvements between the older Scania trucks and the new S-series were “like night and day – and the old Scania trucks are very very good.” In developing the new generation, Scania’s pre-production test vehicles covered more than 12.5 million kilometres in all terrain and all climatic conditions, from the Arctic Circle in winter to the dry heat of southern Spain. The result has been significantly revised engines and gearboxes and use of lighter materials, leading to improved aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. To showcase all this R&D, CablePrice took a large group of New Zealand customers over to Australia back in April ahead of the official New Zealand launch in June at National Fieldays ®. Customers were able to testdrive the new-generation trucks at a demo centre outside of Geelong,
The next step for Scania is to roll out its hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles
32

which includes a privately-owned on-road and off-road track. The private track enabled managers who are not regular drivers to also get behind the wheel and experience the improvements. Customers also met with Scania representatives to hear more about the technical upgrades and Scania’s goals for sustainability and future transport solutions. Dylan said along with research and testing under the hood, Scania also invested considerable effort into redesigning the cab module and looked at seat configuration to ensure optimal visibility and ergonomics. It also improved driver safety with world-first side curtain airbags to protect driver and passengers in the event of a rollover. “The feedback we received during the test-drives and from our evaluation customers is that visibility is now incredible, and the cabs are very comfortable for drivers. Plus, they have the safety features of a passenger car.”
TRACK & WHEEL
TO SUCCESS
Test drivers also reported faster gear changing and a quieter interior, he said. Scania has expanded its cab range to include a new L-series and S-series. The L cab is a metro cab, which is low to the ground and ideal for driving that involves many starts and stops or frequent climbing in and out of the cab, such as distribution and rubbish collection, available in single or double cab configurations. The S-series is now the biggest cab in the range and has a completely flat floor with plenty of space behind the driver seats to move around and even sleep on if need be. Dylan said the ability for Scania trucks to meet customer needs with its renowned tailor-made solutions was even better with the range. “Existing Scania customers are already familiar with being able to determine weight load, cab size, horsepower, exterior paintwork, the look of the interior, etc. but this is taking the customisation to another level.” The next step for Scania is to roll out its hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. Dylan said Scania had typically been a diesel truck range
for New Zealand customers but there was increasing demand from fleet operators for a more sustainable operation. Customers also wanted to demonstrate to their own customers their dedication to sustainability. In Europe, Scania had introduced bio-fuel, gas and fully electric vehicles and was looking to do so here, he said. To scale up this process in New Zealand, Scania is creating a wholly-owned subsidiary business from 1 January 2019. Scania New Zealand will be responsible for the importation, distribution, and sales of its heavy trucks and buses, as well as parts and business services. CablePrice will remain its key provider of aftersales service and in-service support to customers through its existing dealer network. Mattias Lundholm, Scania New Zealand’s incoming Managing Director said Scania had enjoyed a successful partnership with CablePrice spanning more than 20 years and looked forward to continuing this. “Scania New Zealand will focus on growing our new vehicle sales as well as driving the shift towards
a sustainable transport future. We are investing in the future of Scania in New Zealand because we believe there is potential for us to offer more operators our efficient, safe, and profitable tailor-made truck solutions for their transport needs.” CablePrice Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, Pat Ward, said his company would continue to provide its quality after-sales service to Scania customers. The company will also continue to carry out the physical warehousing and distribution of Scania parts to the dealer network, and preparing products for delivery, as a contracted service to Scania New Zealand. CablePrice technicians are world-renowned for their technical capability, proven by the fact the workshop technician team at CablePrice Christchurch is the current Scania global Top Team champions and our Whangarei branch team is off the to world finals at Scania Sweden at the end of 2018. “The quality of knowledge and technical ability CablePrice offers its Scania customers is the best in the world,” Mr Ward said. n CablePrice

S B Y A D L I S T T here comes a point in time where the benefits of owning your own gear far outweighs the investment, and according to Paddy Faisandier of Tidy Slabs Ltd, the purchase of a new Hitachi ZX55U-5 excavator and Isuzu FVR1000M tipper truck have bought many positive outcomes for the company. “Not only has it taken the rental component out of the equation, but investing in new gear has also enabled us to establish a second dig crew to keep up with growing demand and ensure a smooth and tidy process from raw site to finished slab.” Tidy Slabs specialises in concrete 34
CablePrice
foundations throughout the Wellington region. “We help builders get out of the ground faster by managing the full process from site excavation, engineering, piling and council inspections through to a completed slab ready for frames.” Tidy Slabs was established in December 2015 by cousins Sam Faisandier and Andy Garvie. Paddy, Sam’s father, joined early 2017 and helped set up the dig operation with a 2.5-tonne digger and a small tipper. While the finished product supplied to builders is a concrete slab, the preparation process is very intricate,
explains Paddy. “Pretty much every site we work on, whether it’s a new subdivision or an infill housing project, typically requires some form of digger work in preparation for laying the slabs, such as stripping the ground, removing spoil, augering piles, importing and compaction of stone, and levelling of sand, all before the slabs are boxed and concrete is laid.” Amid the huge Wellington housing and construction boom in recent times, the workload for Tidy Slabs has increased significantly. “With the growing demand for our services, it soon became apparent
TRACK & WHEEL that we needed a second dig team and suitable gear to match. We were often hiring five-tonne excavators and becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of machine availability along with regular transportation delays. “The directors wanted to avoid the potential of any delays to our slab crews resulting from a reliance on the rental machines, so in early 2018, they started shopping around for a truck and excavator combination and found a good match in the Hitachi ZX55U-5 and Isuzu FVR1000M tipper. “What attracted me to Hitachi was mainly the brand reputation and the support that was on tap from CablePrice. Our very experienced earthworks supervisor Dylan Thomas also highly rated Hitachi and really helped in that decision-making process.” At two metres wide and with zero tail swing, the ZX55U-5 offers ergonomically positioned control levers, for low-effort handling as well as a High-Performance Hydraulic system, providing smooth operation, regardless of the load. The short rearend swing provides the operator with confidence when operating in tight work areas, along with other safety features, including the standard factory fitted ROPs approved cab. Paddy agrees that the ZX55U-5 is well suited to the type of work it is doing. “The machines we use can’t be too big, as they are often working on tight sites doing precise work,” he says and adds that in addition to Dylan Thomas, his other two digger operators Joel Evans and apprentice Callum Page are really enjoying their time in the operating seat. Containing the ZX55U-5 comfortably in its tipper bin, Paddy is also pleased
with his Isuzu purchase. “We bought the Isuzu as CablePrice had already spec’ed the truck, so it was all set up ready to go. The alternative would’ve been a three to four month wait for the body to be built, but we had it within 10 days of purchasing and its run most days since then.” With the Isuzu being the transporter of the 5.5-tonne excavator, Chief Truck Driver Jamie Parkinson is kept very busy ferrying the Hitachi between numerous job sites each week. He also utilises the 7,200kg payload in the tipper bin to deliver aggregate and sand to site and remove any spoil material. With a powerful 221kW (300hp) Euro V, turbo diesel engine providing up to 980Nm (723 lb.ft.) of torque and paired with a nine-speed manual transmission, Paddy is impressed with the Isuzu. “I like the idea that it is comfortable in handling the loads we are giving it, rather than on the limit and in terms of horsepower – it’s got oodles. I drive it from time to time and it’s an awesome truck and it’s always kept in mint condition.” Paddy says the addition of the new gear has made the company more independent and productive, as the excavator is always on tap when needed and easily moved from site to site. “I think there’s definitely a benefit beyond the earnings of these machines, as we now have a really tightly integrated workflow between the dig and slab crews, who are in constant communication around what job is the main priority. The end result is a seamless process from green site to finished slab and most importantly, satisfied clients.” n

POWER OF TWO
J
ason Alder, owner of Wellington Contracting Ltd, fell into his line of work unintentionally. It started with the purchase of his 16-acre property in Judgeford, Porirua back in 2015. Working in IT at the time, he planned to hire a contractor to carry out excavation work on the land. “I received a quote of $120k to do the earthworks and figured I might as well invest in my own gear and do the work myself,” he says. A farm boy and qualified builder by trade, Jason had experience operating excavators, so easily turned his hand to the challenge and purchased a used 12-tonne Hitachi digger and tipper truck to carry out the work. Less than a year into the project, Jason took a gamble and established Wellington Contracting Ltd and started chasing down larger commercial contracts. “I was doing my own property and friends and family kept approaching me, wanting me to do work for them, and I started making money at it, so decided to get out of IT and give it a jam.” Wellington Contracting carry out general earthworks throughout the greater Wellington region, including site works, drain laying, hardscaping, and hydroseeding.A one-man-band for the first eight months, Jason quickly grew that into a team of 14 full-time staff to respond to increasing demand for residential construction work in the capital. Having won several high-profile housing development contracts, Jason also needed to grow his fleet and purchased a Hitachi ZX135US-5 excavator and an Isuzu CYZ460 tipper truck from CablePrice is mid-2018 to assist on these projects. Having had experienced with Hitachi excavators, it was an easy decision for Jason when it came time to purchase new. “It literally came down to the fact that if you ever want to resell a digger, Hitachi just goes for way more than any other machine. And you don’t pay a hell of a lot more than other brands. It’s a well-respected product and everyone loves it. I love it.” The ZX135US-5 has a 73.4kW engine driving the hydraulic pump,
36
CablePrice
producing a maximum oil flow of 234 L/min.The high oil flow provides excellent compound functioning and plenty of power on demand for bulk earthworks, while still providing smooth flow for precise and controlled finishing. The ROPS cab also boasts excellent all-round visibility, air-suspension seat, sufficient leg room, and a pressurised cab to keep dust and particles from entering. Jason adds that “it’s the zero-swing with the blade that makes the ZX135US-5B a superior product”, which is particularly beneficial when operating on jobsites with tight, confined spaces. Jason says the Isuzu CYZ460 11.5-tonne tipper truck has also been a great new addition to his line-up. It’s used for removing spoiled waste and delivering fresh aggregate for pad preparation and landscaping and for the transportation of the 13-tonne excavator on a pintle hook trailer. Matt, who spends a lot of time behind the wheel, is impressed with the truck’s performance on Wellington’s windy, steep hills. “It’s got a good steering lock and an 18-speed road ranger gearbox in it, with lots of gear ratios to choose from. The truck spends a lot of time with the trailer and digger behind it, so having the 18-speed definitely helps.” Having been spec’ed with Super Single tyres on the front, the Isuzu can take up to 11.5 tonnes in the tipper bin as well as towing a 14-tonne trailer with the excavator. Running a 348kW (460hp), six-cylinder, Euro V turbo diesel engine with a maximum torque of 2250Nm (1,663 lb.ft.),“the truck definitely isn’t lacking in power, even with a full load on the back”, Matt says. “I can’t fault the comfort of it either and the truck sits quite high, so there’s great visibility from the cab.” Jason utilises CablePrice’s Wellington workshop for servicing on his Hitachi and Isuzu. “I highly recommend Warwick and Aaron; they are top blokes with top service.” He has also taken advantage of CablePrice’s field servicing. “The few times that there have been issues, the team popped out to site and sorted them out straightaway.” n

RIGID FRAME DUMP TRUCKS
In purchasing Euclid (a rigid dump truck brand synonymous with the mining industry), Hitachi was able to expand its line-up of mining products, with a world-leading range that perfectly complements its hydraulic excavators. Hitachi AC-drive technology, developed by Hitachi Limited, provides truck performance with a higher top speed, better gradability, and stronger retardation. These features increase the truck’s productivity and uptime while reducing operating and maintenance costs, all of which equates to a lower cost per tonne of material moved. Engineered for performance, designed for comfort, and built to last, Hitachi rigid dump trucks make even the toughest jobs look small. Model
