TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS
MANAGING DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS
Pat Ward—Managing Director
W
elcome to our spring edition of Track & Wheel. I don’t know about you, but I will be glad to see the back of this winter and the rain it has brought. I am sure it has affected many of you in some way, be it in the construction sector, forestry, agricultural contracting, etc. It’s been a little too wet. Being a farmer’s son, I am always conscious about complaining about it being too wet. In about four months’ time, we may well be wishing for a few drops of the life-giving substance as we watch pastures wither and drop away. But I guess it’s all about having the right amount at the right time and not all within a concentrated period of time, such as winter. I hope the spring and summer see enough of a dry off for you to get out there and earn your livelihood. From time to time, we get feedback from some of you on our Track & Wheel. By and large, the publication is well received and most of you look forward to it.Typically, our focus in our publication has been about the product—either new models coming into the market or the products we have sold in recent months. We often run articles on customers using our products and these are always a good read. However, I have reflected on the fact that we don’t often talk about everything that CablePrice has to offer and the things we can offer to you, our customers, that can, and do, contribute to better business outcomes for you. In future editions, you will see the first of a number of articles around the CablePrice ‘Total Solution’.We want to tell you about things such as the Hitachi ConSite and Scania Communicator, and on-board and web-integrated Fleet Management Systems that can bring real gains to your business. We already have many customers engaged in these systems but realise there is a whole segment that doesn’t know much about it and is missing out on improved productivity through less downtime, along with significant fuel savings and safety gains. Much of the Hitachi range, and every Scania purchased, has these systems on-board.What do they do and how can they help you? Fault reporting, on-board diagnostics, monitoring adverse driver behaviour, engine performance, and fuel consumption are some of the benefits. This is the face of the future and the understanding that the machine or truck itself is only now part of the solution you purchase, is a revelation in itself—that it is, in fact,
4
CablePrice
part of an end-to-end chain, which when used as a whole, brings real benefits. And we can prove it. We also want to tell our customers about our Service Contracts. We find that some customers have difficulty in seeing the value in them, and we probably don’t always explain the benefits well enough. They can be a little complex at times but, to a degree, that is because they are so comprehensive and the time taken to acquaint yourself with the workings of these tools will repay itself. Our competitors have them too, so what is different about ours? You will be able to read about how CablePrice was the first to introduce Service Contracts for our customers back in 2003 and how we still lead the New Zealand market with new and innovative offerings that pay dividends for your business. The ‘whole of life’ concept, which once understood and engaged with, sees your fleet operated with fewer breakdowns, lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and fixed monthly costs that are known and can be budgeted. Along with this, unforeseen major failures can be covered by the insurance of a service contract and changing out into a new machine at the optimal time—when it will attain a good trade price—will ensure you continue operating late model, high uptime gear. Please read and enjoy our latest Track & Wheel. Take care Pat Ward
By and large, the publication is well received and most of you look forward to it

Recent appointments Deon Stephens, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Head Office CablePrice is delighted to announce the recent appointment of Deon Stephens to the role of General Manager, Sales and Marketing. Deon joins the executive management team, having worked for CablePrice for the last 20 years in a range of management roles and, most recently, as National Customer Support Manager where he was responsible for technical support, service contracts and warranties, fleet management systems, and key account management. Deon’s 20 years of experience working at CablePrice has given him in-depth exposure to the entire business and provided an exceptional understanding of customer expectations across our
extensive range of products and industries. Deon has a genuine focus on delivering on our promise to customers and exceeding expectations, driving down their total cost of ownership using technology, and providing a team that supports our customers to grow our businesses together. Pat Ward, Managing Director & COO of CablePrice New Zealand, says,“This strong customer-centric approach is one that many of you will be familiar with. His aftersales background being transferred into the sales arena brings a strong empathy that allows him to connect directly to customer needs and pain points in a way that can only come from experience.”
Luke Larsen, Equipment Account Manager, Auckland The equipment sales team welcomed a new sales representative to the North Shore, Auckland-based team. However, he is someone who probably doesn’t need an introduction to many CablePrice customers up there. Luke Larsen (formerly Equipment Team Leader of CPL North Shore) joins the equipment sales team, taking over the recently vacated sales role after Andre Edney’s retirement. Luke has been a heavy equipment technician since 2001 and has been with the CablePrice North Shore team for more than nine years. In his time with CablePrice, he has amassed enough awards to probably justify building an extension onto his house to display them all. Some of the awards he has won are Hitachi
Most Valuable Serviceperson (Tokyo) 2014, Asia & Pacific Technician Comp winner 2013 and 2014, and CablePrice’s Top Tech winner 2013 and 2014. Luke hasn’t wasted any time getting machinery deals done, having sold more than 15 machines, all signed up in his first month. “Luke is going to be a great asset to our Equipment sales team. His technical knowledge and understanding of how to specify a machine to a customer’s individual requirement is really going to be a strength that our customers will benefit from,” Alex Kelly, CablePrice National Sales Manager— Equipment, says. Welcome aboard (again) Luke.
Scott Beauchamp, National Fleet Sales Manager, Head Office Scott Beauchamp recently joined the CablePrice sales and marketing team as National Fleet Sales Manager for Scania trucks. Based at Wellington’s head office, Scott brings a bundle of enthusiasm to the role, where he is responsible for developing strong business relationships with high-profile truck fleets across the country. In a previous life, Scott worked in the freight and cargo industry, with extensive business-to-business sales experience, including stints with freight giants such as Mainfreight (Sydney, Australia), Freightways and, most recently, TNT in New Zealand.
But if he’s new to CablePrice, you wouldn’t know it! Scott has slotted right in among the team and has made a good start in tackling this challenging role. He also has his hands full at home where his lifelong passion for basketball has been replaced with a new baby girl demanding plenty of what was his leisure time. “Scott is a welcome addition to the Scania sales team where his significant experience in the transport sector is ideally suited to developing strong business relationships,” Mike Davidson, CablePrice National Sales Manager, Commercial Vehicle, says. Welcome to the team Scott. Good luck and it’s great to have you on-board. CablePrice

JASON BRASHIER TAKES OUT THE HITACHI TOP TECHNICIAN WORLD FINAL
J
ason Brashier from the Silverdale branch represented the Asia Pacific region at the World Final of Hitachi Top Technician in Japan. The event took place at Hitachi’s Technical Training Centre, approximately 60km north-east of Tokyo, from 12 to 13 October. This year, eight technicians from Japan,Australia, South Africa, China, India, Kenya, Kazakhstan, and New Zealand participated, making it the largest number of technicians to have ever taken part since the competition began in 2008. The Silverdale branch has a proud history, with Jason being the third technician to represent the Asia Pacific region at the world final. Credit must go to CablePrice’s longest-serving staff member Geoff Bellinger, Equipment Technician at the Silverdale branch, who who has had a huge influence over all technicians. The first day of the competition involved the closed book theory portion, where technicians were given 60 minutes to answer 40 questions on everything from calculating the ground pressure of an excavator to the knowledge of diesel engines. Day two involved three different elements, including a practical assessment, an electrical measuring exercise, and the report. The practical element involved three major faults that 6
CablePrice
were preventing the machine from operating. Jason was the only competitor to complete all three of the faults in the allocated time of 90 minutes and even had time to clean the machine and refit all of the removed covers, which was an amazing effort. Next up was the electrical testing component—30 minutes to complete some basic electrical tasks with an emphasis on safety. The reporting portion involved Jason presenting his findings and repair procedures to a panel of senior Hitachi executives. These executives also had the opportunity to ask questions to the technicians and can prove to be difficult, as each question is translated from Japanese to the technician’s native language and the answer is translated back to Japanese. A gala dinner followed where the head of HCM presented all technicians with a prize package and announced the two winners. Takahashi Kazuki from Japan was announced the winner from the group of technicians who competed on the ZX-5B specification of machine (Japan and Australia) and Jason was named the winner from the group of technicians who competed on the ZX-5G machine. Well done Jason on your amazing effort and congratulations from all of us at CablePrice. n

THE SCANIA TOP TEAM NZ CHAMPIONS HAVE BEEN FOUND
S
eptember 23 marked an important occasion for 20 CablePrice Scania workshop technicians. In addition to exercising their right to vote, the New Zealand final of the Scania Top Team competition was held at the Wellington head office. The finals saw four teams from the CablePrice branch network;Whangarei (All Torque, All Noise), Auckland (Colonials), Palmerston North (Black Spanners), and Christchurch (The Natives). The teams, made up of five people, went head to head over five workstations where 20 minutes was allocated to complete each task. The stations included theory, transmission, engine, rear axle, and bodywork electrics (BWE), and each included a research component to determine the correct parts required for the job. Not all station tasks were set up on a vehicle, an example being the BWE station, which was set up on a state-of-the-art BWE system training board. Each task also needed to follow Scania work procedure, with marks awarded for using the correct process and use of service tools to solve each task. Competing teams did not know what each station consisted of or the order they would see each station, and it was immediately clear that teamwork, organisation, and communication were the key to achieving a good score. But as pressure mounted
throughout the afternoon, the mentally-draining nature of the task stations started to show on the faces of the competing teams. The climax of the day could not have been better scripted with Christchurch, the defending champion, and Whangarei level on points, each having completed four stations. It all hinged on the last station, with Whangarei taking on the BWE station and Christchurch taking on the transmission station. Christchurch were tough competition but Whangarei held their nerve and delivered the winning blow, beating Christchurch 162 points to 153. The Top Team event concluded with an awards dinner, attended by all the competitors, judges, and support staff. Colin Bowden, General Manager of Aftersales, presented the awards to the teams. He was impressed with the levels of Scania knowledge and skills displayed during the competition. During his presentation speech, Colin acknowledged the benefits of Scania Top Team in upskilling CablePrice workshop technicians, resulting in a higher level of service provided to our Scania customers. Having secured the top spot, the Whangarei boys will travel to South East Asia next year to compete in the Regional Final. Let’s hope the winning streak continues. n

THE NEWEST MEMBER TO THE HITACHI DIGGER FAMILY
H
itachi’s latest medium excavator model, the ZX210LC5B, is due to hit the New Zealand market in mid-2018, and in preparation of its arrival, CablePrice imported two demonstration units into the country so the sales team and customers could get a feel for the new model and the benefits it offers. “Machine guidance technology has become a common requirement in our construction market and gives New Zealand customers a taste of what’s to come from Hitachi,” CablePrice Equipment Product Manager Andrew Crane says. “Both the ZX210LC-5B excavators were factory fitted with full wiring and sensors for a Trimble Earthworks machine guidance kit.We will see more Hitachi models from 13 to 35 tonnes becoming available with factory-ready machine guidance packages in late 2018.” Developed in response to feedback received from customers worldwide, the ZX210LC-5B has proven to not only be a faster and more fuel-efficient machine than its predecessor but also contributes to a cleaner and quieter working environment, thanks to its eco-friendly design. Striking the balance between power and sustainable efficiency can be a difficult task, but this machine’s new generation Isuzu Stage IIIB-compliant engine ticks the box for both, delivering higher

levels of productivity and greater fuel efficiency on the job site. The ZX210LC-5B is equipped with the innovative TRIAS hydraulics system, which enables the operator to achieve higher yields with better fuel consumption. The result is simply lower fuel costs with no compromise on productivity, which over time, makes a big difference to the total cost of ownership. Highlighting its versatility, the ZX210LC-5B also incorporates an attachment support system, with 11 modes that can be registered on the monitor for ease of use with different attachments. The two auxiliary spools are useful for attachments requiring multiple and large volumes of oil flow. Other features that reduce environmental impacts include the muffler filter to capture air pollutants, which are automatically burnt, thanks to an oxidation catalyst and exhaust temperature control and the variable geometry turbocharger and high volume-cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) that helps to reduce nitrous oxide levels. The auto-shutdown and auto-idle functions also help to prevent fuel wastage and reduce noise levels, exhaust emissions, and CO2. If you would like a demonstration on this model, please get in touch with your local CablePrice Equipment Sales Specialist or call on 0800 555 456. n

250,000TH MINI EXCAVATOR FINDS ITS PLACE AMONG THE LEGACY PACK
F
ebruary this year commemorated the 250,000th machine to roll off the production line at Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra Co. Ltd’s Shiga factory in Japan. The factory produces approximately 15,000 mini excavators annually, ranging from ZX10U-5 to ZX85USB-5, and it was a ZX17U-5A excavator that signified this milestone achievement. Destined for CablePrice, the ZX17U-5A landed in the country in April, coinciding with Legacy Contracting Ltd’s requirement for a new mini excavator. Legacy provides small to medium sized civil engineering services within the wider Wellington region and owner Nick Rowell is a big supporter of the Hitachi brand. Despite having only been in business since 2014, and with the New Zealand construction industry undergoing increasing growth, Nick has already built up an impressive line-up of Hitachi machines, including a ZX17U-2, ZX35U-2, two ZX38U-5s, ZX50U-2, two ZX55U-5s, ZX130U-5, ZX135US-2, ZX135US-3, ZX200U-3, and ZX200LC-5, and the addition of the latest ZX17U-5 excavator. CablePrice Managing Director Pat Ward handed Nick the keys to his new ZX17U-5A excavator in early June, and to mark the occasion, Nick was presented with a gift from Hitachi Construction Machinery and the excavator itself was branded with a plaque commemorating the machine’s significance, not only to Legacy Contracting but also to Hitachi Construction Machinery.
GOT THE SKILLS?
To date, Nick stores the machine in his garage while he decides whether he will actually put the machine to work or keep it for a display in the new workshop he is currently having built in Porirua,Wellington. n

One highlight of the conference was the CablePrice-sponsored dinner. STARTING AFRESH AT FIELDAYS 2017
C
ablePrice mixed things up for the 2017 Fieldays® event at Mystery Creek in Hamilton, where for the first time in seven years, the company shifted from its usual spot on the northern side of the showground to a new site directly inside the entrance to Gate 4 on the eastern side. This came in response to Fieldays organisers trying to better categorise exhibitors to make for an easier shopping experience for punters. Now located in the Heavy Equipment zone, alongside all its competitors, it was necessary for CablePrice to make an impact and that they did! Doing away with the usual marquee, the company opted for the Nation Trailer venue centre instead, which included a fully heated exclusive hosting lounge, an outdoor barbecue area, a merchandise shop, and a viewing platform overlooking the Excavator Operator Competition. The trailer proved a great space to host customers and was invaluable for everyone during those typical Fieldays downpours. With a bigger footprint outside than in previous years,
CablePrice was also able to showcase a large range of vehicles and machinery, including the recently released John Deere 2156G swing machine and ZW310-5B forestry spec’d wheel loader. Some of the other items on display included the Scania P440 tipper, Scania P360 4x4 spreader, Scania R620 logger, John Deere 850J bulldozer, and a range of machines from the Hitachi mini excavator line-up. The new site was also conveniently positioned across from the National Excavator Operator Competition, of which CablePrice and Hitachi are a major sponsor. Two Hitachi ZX130-5B excavators were used during the competition and a ZX17U-5 was called in to entertain the kids in place of crowd-pleaser Gerald the Giraffe, who went into retirement earlier this year. Overall, Fieldays 2017 went off without a hitch, with minimal showers, plenty of sunshine, and record attendance, with 133,588 visitors flooding through the gates over the four-day event. We look forward to seeing you at our new site located at D8–16 in 2018! n

N
apier can be a stunning location. However, the Groundspreaders Association meet annually in July, and unfortunately, in 2017, the weather that greeted us matched the season. Nonetheless, the company was warm, dry, and welcoming as it always is from this group and CablePrice and Scania were once again privileged to be the Platinum Sponsors of this event. The groundspread industry is one of innovators and the technology that goes into the industry is quite amazing. These businesses use every ounce of ingenuity to make their operations as efficient and sustainable as possible. Sustainability was the key mantra of the conference and our team of five sales representatives were delighted to have the opportunity to welcome the delegates and show off some of our impressive and highly-efficient All Wheel Drive Scania truck technology. The support, feedback, and relationships we glean from this event makes us confident that we are continuing to grow our penetration in the spreader market, and it keeps us coming back year after year. Looking forward to 2018. n

Take control without lifting a finger
C
able Price is pleased to announce the introduction of two new models to the John Deere “best-in-class” G-series motor grader line-up—the 620G/GP and 622G/GP. Both models are designed for contractors who prefer lighter and more fuel-efficient graders on the job. John Deere has also added a dual joystick option on all Grade Pro (GP) models, along with ripper-stow automation, courtesy lighting, and an updated high-resolution reverse camera monitor, which are new to all G/GP models. Both the 620G and 622G boast the fuel-efficient Tier 3 6.8L John Deere diesel engine with 200 horsepower (149 kilowatts) and 210 horsepower (157 kilowatts), respectively. The generous horsepower, torque, and blade pull deliver the power and lugging ability to get through tough spots. The operating weights of the 620G (38,600 pounds/17,509kg) and 622G (40,300 pounds/18,280kg) are ideal for applications requiring smaller graders. Eco mode, standard on all John Deere graders, helps optimise fuel usage, decreasing operating costs by an additional five to ten percent compared to the larger 670G and 672G models. The new dual joystick option provides intuitive control for operators who prefer joystick control to the standard antler rack. Hand motion is minimised during direction changes and gear shifting. In contrast to the competition, this option provides improved comfort of controls by eliminating the need to “twist” for blade circle or articulation. Other updates to the G-series line include the addition of a seven-inch (17.7 cm), high-resolution reverse camera monitor that provides a clear picture to the operator when reversing

around obstacles. Standard courtesy lighting turns on the machine lights as the operator exits the machine at the end of the day, which is especially important in dark conditions. On GP models, ripper-stow quickly returns the ripper to its fully raised position at the end of pass simply by doubletapping the control. The G-series features eight models (620G/GP, 622G/GP, 670G/GP, 672G/ GP, 770G/GP, 772G/GP, 870G/GP, 872G/GP) with net horsepower ranging from 200 to 280 (149 to 208.7 kilowatts). Four of the units—the 622G/GP, 672G/GP, 772G/GP, and 872G/GP—feature Six Wheel Drive, enabling them to power through the toughest cuts with power flowing to all wheels. Six Wheel Drive gives operators increased traction, the ability to get more work done in fewer blading passes, and a 30-percent increase in blade pull. The John Deere “open-architecture” design lets customers employ their favourite brand of grade-control system. GP models come factory-equipped with bulkhead connectors, sensor mounts, electrical wiring harnesses, integrated controls,

2017 HITACHI CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY CUSTOMER TRIP Fourteen VIP Hitachi excavator customers recently accompanied three CablePrice representatives on a trip to Japan. They visited two of the Hitachi excavator factories—Tsuchiura Works and Hitachinaka-Rinko Works. Alex Kelly, National Sales Manager—Equipment reports on the trip.
T
he night before the Saturday morning flight over to Tokyo, all 17 travellers congregated in an Auckland Airport hotel and got to know each other over a few drinks and a meal. Some of them already knew each other well, making the task of introductions an easy one. The next morning, everybody managed to make it on time past customs, immigration, and onto the plane. The 10+ hour flight over to Japan’s Narita Airport seemed to pass reasonably quickly and a tour guide and bus were waiting to escort us safely to our hotel. Sunday was a free day to recuperate from the prior day’s travel, and we all went for a look around Ginza, a well-known highend shopping area of Tokyo. The weather wasn’t the kindest, as the tail-end of a typhoon was sweeping across the country. This resulted in us all getting a tad drowned at times. Some purchases were made (primarily umbrellas) and then we sought shelter in 14

some small bars and eateries to evade the worst of the weather. Monday morning arrived and we piled onto the bus to travel out to the impressive Tsuchiura Works factory. This site covers a massive 490,000 square meter area and is where the mediumsized Hitachi excavators are made. The tour opened with a formal presentation of the Hitachi Construction Group, which was followed by a walk through the multiple factories to see the assembly lines. Many machines were in various stages of completion, so it gave everyone a good understanding of the amount of work that is involved in making a Hitachi excavator. We then had lunch back in the main reception area and were fortunate enough to be dining with the head factory engineers who were receptive to all of the technical and probing questions we asked. After lunch, it was time to depart on the bus again to see where the large mining excavators and dump trucks are manufactured. This happens at the Hitachinaka-Rinko Works factory, about 1.5 hour’s drive from the Tsuchiura factory. We were not disappointed as there was an EX2600, EX3600, and EX5600 in the testing area, all of which were getting ready to ship off to their new owners in Indonesia and Australia. Seeing 200 to 500 tonne machines in the flesh is not
TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS something that many Kiwis get the opportunity to experience at home, so this was definitely one of the highlights of the factory tour. Our day concluded with a banquet dinner back at the hotel where we were hosted by the Hitachi Construction senior management team, most of whom had visited New Zealand before. The sushi on offer was prepared on-site by a Michelin star-rated sushi chef (going back to New Zealand-made sushi will be a challenge!). Once dinner concluded, we were treated to a few rowdy beers in a local bar, which nicely capped off a great but busy day. The rest of our trip was focussed on sightseeing and enjoying Japan. Tuesday to Thursday saw us visiting Kanazawa, located in the central part of mainland Japan. We took the Shinkansen (bullet train) to get there—a trip that only takes 2.5 hours to travel the 489km distance and reaches a top speed of approximately 280km/h. Doing the same journey by car would take you nearly six hours. Kanazawa is known for its famous castle, gardens, and art galleries as well as its Geisha and Samurai villages. It also has a great fish market where we all viewed and sampled some of the wares on offer. Kanazawa Castle is amazing, and although most parts have been replaced after fires, some of the original parts built in 1788 have survived. Thursday afternoon saw us back in Tokyo via the bullet train before a final day of sightseeing where we managed to squeeze in a visit to the 634-metre-high Sky Tree, Imperial Palace, and also a walk around the Sensō-ji Buddhist temple (Tokyo’s oldest temple). We also stopped at the souvenir shops. Overall, the 2017 Hitachi Construction Machinery Customer trip was another great success and one where we got a small taste of just how fantastic Japan is. I believe we also came away with a greater understanding of how much the Hitachi Construction Group is focussed on creating great products. I thoroughly recommend a visit to both Japan and the Hitachi factory if the opportunity ever arises. n
OHAU QUARRY DEMONSTRATION
K
eestrack Crusher and Screen’s New Zealand distributor Equip2 recently held a joint open day with the CablePrice Wellington team to showcase some of their new and innovative products at Ohau Quarry in Levin. More than 100 invited guests attended the event. Working in among the impressive Keestrack Crusher and Screen line-up were two brand new Hitachi machines—a ZW2205B wheel loader and a ZX210LC-5B excavator. The ZX210LC-5B excavator features our new Hitachi -5B engine technology and also sports a TRIAS (three) pump hydraulic system. A factory-fitted Trimble GNSS system completes the offering. The TRIAS hydraulic system is equipped with sensors that detect load and provide input to the controller, which in turn controls the pumps and valves, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and controllability. The greater controllability was particularly noticeable for those guests that test-drove the machine. With one of the pumps being dedicated to slew, it results in a responsive
machine. The Trimble system installed featured the new 10-inch touchscreen TD520 Android display plus new generation sensors. The combination of a smart machine and GNSS system allows operators of all skill levels to work faster and more productively than ever. The ZW220-5B wheel loader on-site shares the same interim Tier 4 engine technology as the excavator. However, this loader can be operated in two modes that ensures lower fuel consumption and also maximises productivity. Standard mode is for regular duties such as loading materials, while power mode is chosen for more demanding tasks such as heavy-duty breakout work. Operator comfort levels have also improved over the older wheel loader models, with this being a key focus factored into the new design. The machines didn’t remain demonstrators for long with both already out working with their new owners. n CablePrice

NEXT GENERATION TRUCK
F
ollowing the highly anticipated European market introduction in 2016 of the all-new generation Scania truck range, CablePrice is proud to be working with Scania over the coming months to evaluate variants of the new generation Scania here in New Zealand. Mike Davidson, National Sales Manager, Commercial Vehicle, says,“While no local launch date has been set, over the next few months we will be undertaking extensive testing to evaluate the suitability of the new Scania in New Zealand conditions.” To date, Scania has released the new generation truck only to European markets, and it is too soon to speculate on a possible release in New Zealand. Initially, three units will be tested in different configurations and applications around the country.“We are excited and very confident that the new generation truck will perform just as well here as it has in Europe. The new Scania has broken industry ground with the introduction of passenger car-like safety features such as side curtain airbags and demonstrated classleading fuel consumption,” Mike says. Scania’s new generation truck also promises the very latest advances in automotive technology, together with a vast array of digital connected services. The combination of these features can help operators accurately track the performance of trucks, resulting in lower maintenance costs and improved uptime. “We are committed to working these evaluation units hard in New Zealand’s challenging conditions,” Mike says, with the first truck scheduled to land in December 2017. The evaluation programme will run for several months to gather data from different applications and provide performance feedback to the Scania factory located in Södertälje, Sweden. n CablePrice

COF CERTIFIED
ablePrice is continually focused on offering the customer a one-stop-shop solution. Our Hastings branch recognised that having our customers book in a slot to have a COF completed during their busy schedule was often frustrating and not economically viable. The team at CablePrice Hastings has been working through the process to have the workshop and staff compliant through the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and are pleased to have now achieved all the necessary requirements for COF testing. The team has also taken this certification one step further than some testers, where they can inspect the vehicle and repair any issues found. Some testers are only certified to inspect the vehicle. “Hastings-based customers had been putting the pressure on us to assist them with their current COF situation, and we can now say we have another solution to assist their operations and business requirements,” CablePrice Hastings Operations Manager Martyn Shirtliff says. “We now firmly believe we can not only offer an improved service to our customers but also reduce downtime with our COF service, compared to what they were previously getting.” CablePrice Hastings has had one of its employees trained and certified and has also employed a local tester, who was the
Assistant Manager at a testing company, to come on-board and bring his skills, knowledge, and expertise to the operation. This is now the third CablePrice branch in New Zealand to be certified for COFs, with Christchurch and Greymouth branches also offering the service. n

or many years, North Canterbury has been a prominent region for CablePrice with many of our customers basing themselves in this area. Home to a variety of companies working within the region, Culverden is one of the hubs and CablePrice has a long relationship with many of the customers who call this home. Two events last year ensured that CablePrice needed to spend even more time helping service this area. The Amuri Irrigation Scheme and the North Canterbury Earthquake, which was centred in Waiau. Both of these events meant different strategies were required by our service staff, and the Christchurch branch was called upon to establish the needs of customers and be on-site when required. “Over the last year, we have continued to build on the relationships formed between CablePrice Christchurch and the North Canterbury community and are now excited to announce that we will be opening a full time facility in Culverden from December 2017,”Andrew Hodgkinson, Branch Operations Manager for Christchurch, says. Initially, this facility will be manned by one Equipment Technician and one Commercial Vehicle Technician but growth is anticipated over the coming years. 18

FIRST CROSS-BORDER CONVOY INITIATIVE Scania was one of several stakeholders taking part in the European Truck Platooning Challenge, with involvement from 29 March to 6 April 2016. On 29 March, three extra-long trucks embarked from Scania in Södertälje, Sweden, to drive in a close convoy to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Challenge was the world’s first crossborder initiative of its kind. The initiative was being driven by the Netherlands, which currently holds the EU Presidency, and aims to fast-track the development of truck convoys. The project is also supported by ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. The objective is to accelerate the development of convoy-driving corridors within Europe, to increase cross-border cooperation, and to pave the way for EU legislative changes. Truck convoys have the potential for increasing safety, as well as reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in all long-haulage road transport operations.
During the Truck Platooning Challenge Scania also demonstrated the benefits of automation.

HITACHI UNVEILS A FIRST FOR THE
CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY H itachi has developed an industry-leading innovation as part of its ConSite remote fleet monitoring system. It is the first of its kind in the construction industry, and it extracts data from two unique sensors that monitor the quality of an excavator’s engine and hydraulic oil, 24/7.
Increased machine availability
Designed to reduce the total cost of ownership, the new oil sensors will enhance customers’ experiences with their Hitachi construction machinery. Increased machine availability and reduced maintenance requirements—which will save owners time and money—are the key benefits of this innovative feature. The machine transmits sensor data on a daily basis to Hitachi’s remote fleet monitoring system. If the oil quality has deteriorated or the oil has become contaminated, the dealer will be notified via e-mail or text and can take the necessary actions. For example, an oil sample can be taken and then sent to a laboratory. From this, a complete analysis is generated so the exact cause is identified. The dealer can then fix any faults quickly and conveniently on-site.

Reduced maintenance costs
The new oil sensors will reduce maintenance costs by providing a more accurate estimation of when an oil change is required. This is more efficient than a fixed oil change interval. Hitachi customers can be sure of the reliability and maximum availability of their Hitachi machine, thanks to the prevention of unscheduled downtime. “With this new sensor technology constantly monitoring the condition of a machine’s oil, engine and component reliability is one less thing an operator has to worry about” Alex Kelly, CablePrice Equipment Sales Manager, says. “It will ultimately result in less machine downtime through identifying any potential issues earlier,” he adds. The oil sensors will be installed in the ZX210-6 and ZX350-6 medium excavators as of November 2017, but Hitachi will roll them out to other models in the near future. A retrofit kit is also available from authorised Hitachi dealers for the previous generation ZX210-5 and ZX350-5 models. n

n September this year, Roger Ferguson of Sika Logging Limited, Taupo, flew to the John Deere Davenport Works in Iowa, which is just across the Mississippi River from Moline, to take part in John Deere’s ‘Gold Key Handover’ and to encounter his new 848L Skidder coming off the production line. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Roger says. “The Gold Key tour was absolutely amazing. Deere employees take such pride in what they do, and it really shows.” What made this ‘Gold Key Handover’ extra special for Roger is that he was a member of the John Deere Customer Advocate Group (CAG) that helped develop the L-Series Skidders. “The engineers did a great job putting together a good skidder,” Roger says.
GOT THE SKILLS?
“They did pretty much what we discussed at the CAG meetings. Deere really listens to its customers. They always have their ears open to improvements. Even from our neck of the woods, we can get a hold of Deere personnel in the U.S. I’m comfortable knowing I can ring someone up to discuss something.” The new 848L will be the 11th skidder for Sika Logging. “We need machines that keep running,” he says. “That’s why I stick with John Deere skidders. We don’t really have too much downtime, and they’re a great tool. Why fix something that’s not broken? John Deere is a family company that looks after small customers. As long as it’s green, we’ll keep using Deere equipment.” n

WHEEL LOADER a winner at Woodhill
B
uying a Hitachi ZW220-5 wheel loader to fleet and load trucks for a Woodhill Forest logging operation might be considered unusual by some, but for Steven Stokes, director of Stokes Logging, the decision has been a no-brainer. “The wheel loader can move a lot more wood at a much faster rate than an excavator and has already reduced our loading time from 25 minutes to seven minutes. The effi ciencies and high productivity of the machine have taken a lot of pressure off our operators, and with a lower operating cost than an excavator,
24

our total day cost is cheaper, too,” Steven says. The idea to choose a wheel loader ahead of a grapple digger is not a new concept in Steven’s family, as his father Craig Stokes and uncle Murray Stokes also used one in Woodhill Forest when they were contracting there 25 to 30 years ago. “A lot more people used wheel loaders back then. To be fair, they don’t suit every operation up here, but because of the ground conditions being sand at Woodhill with terrain that allows decent-sized skids, it has been a great option for us,” he says. Steven adds that one of the biggest
advantages of having the machine is being able to run two skid sites at once, with the wheel loader running between the sites doing the loading and fl eeting. “It’s also great for safety purposes, as we can sit the log processor further back from the skid, which allows the other machine operators, the quality control, and truck drivers and visitors to the site to be de-phased from each other, as the wood can be moved further away without any production losses.” CablePrice Equipment Sales Specialist, Phil McKenzie, says CablePrice has sold some
TRACK & WHEEL wheel loaders to other forestry contractors in the Far North, with the Hitachi ZW220-5 well suited to its current application. “The sand at Woodhill Forest gets harder instead of softer during winter, so it is possible to run a wheel loader there, unlike most of Northland where it can turn to mud. However, there are a lot of other forestry operations around New Zealand, which have the perfect conditions to enjoy all the benefi ts of a wheel loader’s increased productivity.” Although the Hitachi ZW220-5’s spec sheet says it was capable of lifting off the heavy forestry trailers, Phil set up a test in the yard to ensure it was up to the task. “It did the job comfortably and operates well within its capacity for the weight class of the machine,” Phil says. He adds that a unique feature of Stokes Logging’s new wheel loader is a multi-function joystick, which controls all functions, including forward, neutral, and reverse gears, and opening and closing the log grapple. “Some operators are a bit sceptical of this set-up to start with, but once they get used to running everything from one joystick instead of using two or three different levers, they love it,” he says. Steven has been a CablePrice customer for around eight years and still operates the fi rst Hitachi digger
that he bought off the fi rm at the Woodhill crew. “The reason I went with a Hitachi wheel loader is due to the good relationship I have with Phil McKenzie and also the CablePrice branch in Silverdale, which does all the servicing and maintenance of my Woodhill machines. Hitachi is a proven brand, and when I looked up their wheel loaders, I saw they had great visibility out of the cab, excellent fuel effi ciency, and plenty of power. It defi nitely ticks all those boxes on the worksite,” Steven says. Stokes Logging has its own engineering team Metal Creations Engineering Ltd that made one small adjustment to the wheel loader—swapping out the factory rear radiator guard for a heavy-duty one they built themselves. The Whangarei fi rm’s crew at Woodhill operates all Hitachi and John Deere gear bar one machine and took possession of a new John Deere 648L log skidder at the same time as the wheel loader. “The main reason for buying the new John Deere 648L was to go up a tyre size and increase traction and payload when working in sand. It’s really paid off. Adding these two machines to our fl eet has created signifi cant effi ciencies across our operation, with a substantial fuel saving per day, reducing our costs per tonne. They’ve been a fantastic investment,” Steven says. n

lan Coombs says it was a suggestion by his wife and business partner Leanne that led to the couple purchasing their first Scania truck from CablePrice for their sizeable Dunedin freight operation, A&L Coombs Contracting Ltd. “We had been running another European brand for 16 years, and when we were due to buy a new truck. Leanne suggested it would be good for the drivers to have some variety in the fl eet, so Scania seemed the obvious choice.” After getting in touch with CablePrice Commercial Vehicle Sales Specialist Kere Menzies, the couple invested in a top-of-the-line Scania R730 for their business, which operates daily runs between Dunedin, Christchurch, and the lower South Island, carrying raw materials and fi nished products for its main client Goodman Fielder. “We decided we might as well go for the highest spec’d truck to see how good it was.” Alan says the new Scania R730 runs virtually 24/7 with two full-time and one part-time driver and has already clocked up more than 100,000km since it hit the road just over six months ago. “We’re very happy with the truck, which has impressive power and fuel-effi ciency. Reliability has also been great so far and the boys rate it highly. Its main driver Aaron used to drive Scania trucks with Fonterra so is familiar with this brand. He’s a big
TRACK & WHEEL fan of the driver’s app on the dash and has the truck running at about 98%. One of our other drivers, Chris, also drove Scania trucks with his previous employer and is impressed by the changes on this new model.” The R-Series’ good-looking exterior is more than matched by its premium fi nish and comfort inside the cab, which is a big factor for A&L Coombs Contracting, given its trucks are on the road day and night. “The new Scania provides driver comforts, with a leather interior, bunks, a television, and good media systems. They can set the cab up how they like, with a range of different seating choices. The truck is also very comfortable to ride in with airbags all around, including the front axles, which we’re not used to,” Alan says. The Scania R-Series has the widest choice of powertrain options on the market, also featuring the fully automated Scania Opticruise, which makes its operation easily confi gured to fi t customers’ specifi c needs. Alan says when the fi rm fi rst took possession of the truck, they found it quite technical, but with driver training from CablePrice, the company was soon getting the best out of it. “After the driver training, the boys started to push the percentages on the truck. They even have a bit of a competition to see who can deliver the most fuel savings. The truck’s technology allows us to monitor these results closely,” Alan says. Although they haven’t harnessed the Scania
Communicator technology on the truck yet, Alan can see the benefi ts and expects to utilise this tool in the future. It is a big decision for any business owner to take a punt on a new supplier and brand, but Alan says being a new CablePrice customer has been a refreshing experience. “The sales and follow-up service from CablePrice has been excellent. I even had a follow-up phone call from Scania in the UK who were keen to get feedback about our experience. That kind of interest means a lot,” he says. The Coombs are so keen on their new Scania that they have already ordered another new R730 from CablePrice, which is due for delivery in the next few months. “The new truck will be even more highly spec’d. We ran into one snag, as the new sensors for the Cruise Control app on the latest model meant we couldn’t have the same bull bar set-up we’ve got on the fi rst truck. However, Kere went above and beyond to solve the issue, sourcing some special bull bars for us from Australia to do the job.” With such a positive start, Alan and Leanne say they are keen to continue to build on their new relationship with CablePrice and Scania. “Hopefully, things will carry on the way they’ve started. We’re not hard to get along with, but like most fi rms, we like to get some bang for our buck, too,” Alan says. n

t goes without saying that navigating the difficult terrain of Transmission Gully with a 30+ tonne load of dense rock and dirt calls for some pretty powerful and dependable gear. For Andy Taylor, Operator Trainer for CPB HEB JV, the Bell B30E articulated dump trucks (ADTs) have proven their worth on the job site. The Transmission Gully project involves the construction of a 27km, four-lane motorway, stretching from Mackays Crossing to Linden. CPB HEB JV, who are managing the five-year project, initially started with a small fleet of diggers and dump trucks, but once things started ramping up, increased their fleet with eight 6x6 Bell B30E ADTs from CablePrice. Andy admits that up until that point, he hadn’t had much involvement with the Bell product but says that it was the previous experience with CablePrice’ sales and after-sales support that sold them. “I was certainly aware of the brand but really, we purchased the Bell’s off the back of the Hitachis we had already received and the relationship we had with CablePrice,” he says. CPB HEB JV now have 46 John Deere, Hitachi, and Bell machines working on the Transmission Gully project.Andy has had plenty of opportunity to familiarise himself with the Bell B30E’s since its arrival in September, even receiving specialised training from Tony Scharvi, CablePrice Equipment Product Support Engineer, and Todd Alexander, Bell Product Support Manager, who came on-site to demonstrate the true capabilities of the trucks. As far as ADTs go, the B30Es are high-tech vehicles, with a full colour screen interface in the cab, which allows the truck to not only be customised for the worksite but also integrates advanced new safety systems “With other ADTs, if you can drive one brand, you can drive them all, but these trucks are a little bit different as there are no gear shifts or hoist levers. Instead, everything is done off a touch pad controller. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a new or seasoned driver. We can set these trucks up for pretty well any operator, and in such a way, that they more or
less look after themselves with minimum effort from the driver,” Andy says. With enhanced safety features as standard across the E-Series range, CPB HEB JV are really benefiting from the additional functionality of these trucks. The Hill Descent Control feature allows the driver to adjust the retarder aggressiveness on the screen interface to ensure maximum descent control for all conditions, which Andy says is a handy function when navigating the steep slopes of Transmission Gully. “The advantage with the Bells is you can pre-set a safe descent speed and the truck will automatically take control of the braking and retardation for you,” he says. Hill Hold is another great feature, which prevents the truck from rolling backwards by automatically applying brakes when the operator removes his foot from the accelerator when driving up an incline. The truck also has a bin-tip prevention function, which according to Andy, is a great safety enhancement. “Drivers rely too heavily on their reversing cameras as opposed to using their rear-view mirrors. With the camera located between the wheels, they don’t have a proper perspective when the bin becomes uneven,” he says. But on the Bell ADTs, there are built-in sensors that trigger an alarm when the bin reaches more than 17 percent to warn the driver of the potential for a tub roll-over. At this point, the tipping bin will automatically come back down. CablePrice Strategic Partnership Manager Aidan Mahony says that with the lightest tare weight and the highest power-toweight ratio in its class, the Bell has proved to be at home in the challenging conditions of Transmission Gully. Andy has also been really impressed with how the fully loaded trucks handle the tricky landscape. “In this type of steep country, the material is not the best, but where the Bells really come into their own is that they easily climb out of gullies and descend from just about anything. From what I have heard from the operators, they are really happy with the Bells and I like them too. They are a good piece of kit to have on-site,” he says. n

he ability to provide real-time feedback to drivers about their performance behind the wheel and how they are tracking towards their annual performance bonus, are some of the advantages of the Scania Communicator technology, Rod Alexander, Fleet Manager of Alexander Group, says. “One of the main reasons we switched from our old GPS-based monitoring system to Communicator was the ease at which it could provide individualised information around key driver performance criteria such as idle times, fuel economy, and over-speeds. We can quickly extract reports from the system that show our drivers what they are doing well or if there are any areas they
30
CablePrice
need to improve if they are to achieve their performance bonus. It has an immediate effect.” Individual driver logins are a key benefit of the system, given Alexander Group has multiple drivers operating the same trucks in its fleet, Rod says. “With our previous monitoring system, we had to rely on timestamps to figure out who was driving a truck at any given moment, but with Communicator, a range of reports are accessible to our supervisors at the touch of a button. We are also impressed at the presentation of the information, which is easy to follow and a lot less clunky than our old reports.” Alexander Group is a nationwide firm with operations in Glenbrook, Penrose, and Christchurch and a new head office
in Ellerslie. It has a specialist team of drivers based throughout New Zealand who work around the clock to deliver liquid gases and cryogenic gas products to a wide range of commercial users, including hospitals, food and beverage facilities, and general manufacturers, plus large industrial clients such as the aluminium smelter at Tiwai. Rod says since harnessing the capabilities of the Communicator and the benefits of the system being made by Scania for Scania trucks (as opposed to ‘bolted-on’ systems), Alexander Group has also achieved significant fuel savings and a reduction in idling time across its operation. “In the two years since we adopted the system, we have improved our fuel consumption from around 2km/litre to
TRACK & WHEEL
2.3km/litre across the entire fleet. With 38 trucks on the road, this adds up to some considerable cost savings. Our average idling time over the same period has gone down from 14.1% to 5.9%, and while it’s not so measurable, we’ve noticed a general decrease in repairs and maintenance with the trucks being driven more sympathetically.” Although they don’t share individual drivers’ results with the entire team, high performers are sometimes rewarded with a voucher or Scania jacket, Rod says. “There is a bit of healthy competition, particularly between the younger guys who have the app on their phones and like to track their performance themselves, both on the road and at the end of every shift.” One-on-one training from Scania has also been critical for the firm to get the
most out of the Communicator system, he says. “The training is ongoing, and we’ve also done a lot of training on the Scania website. We’re just adding another seven new Scania trucks to our fleet so will have all our guys back in front of the Scania expert and out on the road with him as well, to ensure we’re getting the best out of the new trucks in real -life situations.” Scheduling services from the nationwide CablePrice network is another great thing about Communicator, Rod says. “The system automatically alerts us when services are due based on usage estimates. This is great for our supervisors and also our drivers in remote locations who can access the information and arrange their own
service schedule without middle management having to get involved. A lot of hassle is taken away when the trucks talk to the website.” As a dangerous goods transporter, having a supplier such as CablePrice that understands its needs and can be relied upon is a must, Rod says. “From Kaitaia to Bluff, we know we will get the same level of recognition and service from CablePrice. Our trucks run 24/7 and because we’re delivering products such as medical oxygen to hospitals, we can’t afford downtime or lives could be put at risk. “CablePrice understands we have to be super vigilant with our business operations and plays a key role in keeping us on the road.” n

LOTS OF PLUSES
WITH FULLY BUILT FORESTRY OPTION
W
hen Mark Welch of M Welch Logging Ltd decided to buy a new forestry excavator for his Napier logging operation, he wasn’t expecting to have one on-site and working within two weeks. But with a Hitachi ZX250L-5G fully built, in-house option from CablePrice, this is exactly what happened. “When I rang CablePrice, they told me they had a machine already under construction, and I could have it in a couple of weeks. I would have been waiting months if I’d had to rely on a third party to build it but there was virtually no stand-down with this machine.” CablePrice’s in-house fully built forestry options have been making life easy for customers such as Mark for many years. The units, which are specially modified by CablePrice’s engineering department, are built tough to handle New Zealand’s rugged forestry conditions. These highquality, cost-effective packages are a great option for customers who need to mobilise quickly. Equipment Sales Specialist Paul Laird says in addition to time-savings, CablePrice’s in-house options provide many other advantages over third-party builds. “No one knows Hitachi excavators better than CablePrice. Our engineers work closely with the factory to ensure all modifications are completed correctly, are manufacturer-approved, and won’t interfere with the operation of the excavator. Our in-house factory trained technicians can also assist every step of the way.” Mark has been putting his new Hitachi ZX250L-5G through its paces for more than six months in the Gwavas Forest, south of Hastings,

where it has been doing fleeting and loading work and, occasionally, shovelling. He drove the excavator himself for the first six weeks and is impressed by its performance. “It’s easy to operate and has good capacity. It is a lot faster in the hydraulics and has more track power than my old machine. The manoeuvrability is good, too. Having a fully built forestry excavator is a good option if you want a machine quickly. It definitely does the job,” Mark says. Paul says the versatile Hitachi ZAXIS-5G L excavator series can be relied on to deliver in the most demanding forestry environments, with a robust front, big traction force, and high swing torque being features of the standard unit. “Safety is one of the key advantages of our standard package, which has a high-specification ROPS cab, with four points of emergency exit built into the ROPS over-frame.We can also offer a full range of guarding options. Chain shot protection can also be added to machines, with bullet-proof glass in the cab to protect the operator from chain fragments that can fly off log processors.” A reinforced high and wide track frame on an oversized undercarriage is another feature of the series, with size-up components on the undercarriage providing increased traction force for better climbing up and down hills. “The high and wide undercarriage on these machines provides increased ground clearance, better stability, and improved manoeuvrability. Loading capacity has also been improved with the redesigned high-lift bracket, which increases productivity due to faster machine cycle times and enables logs to be lifted higher when loading trucks,” Paul says. A reinforced 25mm thick track undercover is another feature of the machine that protects the centre joint and piping from tree branches and stumps. Additional bonuses of CablePrice’s fully built forestry package include a four-year, 8000-hour powertrain warranty and 2000 hours free servicing package, which are both included. “We continue to have a good uptake of our fully built forestry option, whether customers choose our standard package or work with us to tweak and revamp the standard option for a more customised solution. The ZX range of machines is well suited to a variety of forestry applications, including logging, felling, loading, processing, and road building,” Paul says. Mark says dealing with CablePrice throughout the purchase of his Hitachi ZX250L-5G has been a positive experience. “CablePrice is always good to deal with, and we’ve already had the service guys out doing a couple of services. Each month, they send me the operating data from the machine, which is helpful, as I can see how it is operating and check the engine and hydraulic temperature. Overall, the process has been easy.” n

JOHN DEERE
SUPPORTS CUT-TO-LENGTH OPERATION
A
bout 15 years ago,Toby Satherley was working in forestry in Perth when he first saw the benefits of mechanised cut-to-length log harvesting, which sees a harvester de-limb and cut logs to length, straight off the stump, which are picked up by a forwarder following along behind. Although popular in Europe, this method is not widely practiced in New Zealand. But that didn’t stop Toby and his wife Amy introducing a cut-to-length crew to their Hawke’s Bay firm, ATS Logging, and investing in some of the latest John Deere equipment—a 909MH Tracked Harvester (which has been separately fitted with a SouthStar QS600 processor) and a John Deere 1910E Forwarder to support the crew. In September, the machines arrived on-site at Waitara Road, around 50km from Napier. The machines will be going to Glenview Forest, around 30km from Napier, where the cut-to-length crew will be working alongside the firm’s hauler crew. “The new John Deere machines were put straight to work and are pulling the numbers we wanted. This should only improve once we get used to the machines, which also have good comfort and visibility,” Toby says. He says the cut-to-length system comes into its own for road lining, with the harvester setting piles of logs all the way down the road line for the forwarder to come along behind and clean up. “There is far less mess for our roading crew to deal with and the method gives us 34
CablePrice
options we don’t have with a conventional skidder. The pulling distances are far greater, and the waste is spread more evenly throughout the blocks rather than in one big heap. It turns a processing area skid into a sort-and-stack site, which has a much less overall impact. With no need for us to build a skid, we can basically run on the road, which is a big advantage when road lining. Although it’s early days with the new John Deere machines, they are definitely doing the job for us so far,” Toby says. CablePrice Equipment Sales Specialist, Paul Laird, says the new John 909MH Tracked Harvester is class-leading in its ability to tilt. “Its tilt mechanism tilts the most of all brands, making it the ideal processor for steep country. It is also a well-balanced machine with good weight distribution, providing a more stable platform to operate on the side of steep hills.” Power and hydraulic performance are also right up there, with excellent swing torque and considerable track force power in the undercarriage.“This machine is from the John Deere M-series, which uses an electronic pump control system, giving it even better performance than its predecessors. It has gone down really well in the market,” Paul says. He adds that a key feature of the John Deere 1910E Forwarder is its rotating, levelling cab, which keeps the cab level at all times and automatically rotates according to the position of the crane, so, the operator is always facing in the right direction and doesn’t have to strain their neck to operate the machine.
“The forwarder also has fast cycle times, good controllability, and a lot of functionality in the controller for operator comfort, and fine-tuning things such as travel speed, crane speed, fuel reduction, and performance increase, if needed. Both machines are matched in terms of high productivity, which makes them well suited to working in tandem applications,” Paul says. Toby says the harvester’s cutting versatility, combined with the forwarder’s self-leveller, gives his operators more options on steeper ground and helps the company to achieve its goal of having none of its crew members on the ground, eliminating potential danger. Although ATS Logging has used a lot of second-hand Hitachi and John Deere equipment in the past, it wasn’t until last year that it bought its first new piece of equipment from CablePrice, a Hitachi ZX400L-5G excavator, which is operating in the hauler crew. “The sales process with Paul has been great, and we like having machines from one dealership. The machine tracking through CablePrice makes servicing easy, and technical support is always there when we need it.” Paul Laird of CablePrice says working alongside a skilled contractor such as Toby with a meticulous equipment maintenance regime, has made for a smooth process and great outcome. “Toby and Amy run their business to a very high standard, which makes for a great working relationship,” he says. n

artin Leslie has dabbled in building and bricklaying work and even managed to squeeze in a successful rugby career in Scotland, before turning his hand to plumbing in 2012. While initially a one-man operation, his company, Leslie Drain Clearing, has seen steady growth over the past five years, which has called for another three plumbing and one administration staff to come on-board to absorb the workload. As the company name suggests, Martin and his team specialise in clearing blocked drains and repairing the damaged ones. They service residential, rural, and commercial properties throughout the greater Wellington region. Martin has two trucks and a small digger in his fleet. He recalls his original box body truck, which he used to cart his plumbing equipment between job sites. “When we first started out, we bought an old box body truck second-hand, and it was old then but it did the job to get us up off the ground,” Martin says. In late 2016, with his truck on its last legs and costing the company money, Martin decided it was time for an upgrade. After a recommendation from a friend, Martin contacted Brian McDermott, CablePrice Isuzu Sales Specialist to assist in spec’ing his new truck.

JACK OF
ALL TRADES “I don’t know much about trucks really, but I knew that Isuzu trucks have a good name and lots of people had been saying good things about them,” Martin says. After discussing his requirements, Brian determined an Isuzu NLR250M cab and chassis was the right fit for Martin, as it had a longer chassis than his current truck, which would allow for additional storage space when the custom-made box body was fitted. “The Isuzu NLR250 has good power, is easy to drive, and its narrow cab allows easy access into some of Wellington’s challenging sites. You can drive this truck on a car licence but still carry a good size load. It’s a win-win situation for Martin,” Brian says. He suggested Wellington-based company Hale Motorbodies for the fit-out and Martin came away with a custom
built 4m by 2m box body, specially designed with a back door compartment to house pump equipment as well as a side door section on both sides of the truck for storing the company’s various plumbing tools and camera gear. In addition to a means of transportation, Martin is pleased with the result.“The truck is reliable and easy to work out of and the sign-writing has also been great advertising for us,” he says. CablePrice also does the servicing on Martin’s NLR250M truck, and he says the process is always straightforward. “I just take the truck in whenever CablePrice calls me and tells me it needs a service. It’s really good and easy,” he says. n

dream scenario for anyone launching their first business is to have work coming out their ears right from the getgo. But that’s the reality for Queenstown-based Shane Mitchell who launched his general contracting business Shane Mitchell Contracting (SMC) in mid-2015. As a oneman band with his Hitachi ZX17U-5 excavator in tow, Shane’s job list grew so much that he purchased a second ZX17U-5 and employed another operator to keep up with the company’s projects. Before establishing SMC, Shane had plenty of exposure to heavy machinery, having first dabbled in digger work at his father’s Levinbased sawmill, Mitchpine Products, before working for a number of larger contracting operations, where Hitachi diggers were among the fleet. Having operated many digger brands throughout his career, Shane says the Hitachi brand always stood out for him and made the purchasing process straightforward. “When I was working for BMT in Queenstown, they had two little Hitachis and I just found them so nice to drive. So when it came time for me to buy, I didn’t really look for anything else. I just like them. They are made properly and have a good reputation,” Shane says. Although the Hitachi ZX17U-5 is one of the smallest excavators in Hitachi’s line-up, it still packs quite a punch. This machine is capable of producing higher levels of productivity, using the same amount of fuel due to greater hydraulic efficiency. The machine is also designed to keep its tail close to its tracks, which allows operators to work in confined spaces such as digging a trench down the side of a house. The tracks can also be extended and retracted to suit the requirements of the job site. Despite its compact structure, the canopy area has been designed with enhanced visibility and a greater sense of space, which according to Shane, makes for a more enjoyable operating experience. “With other diggers, you sit in them and they are a bit tight, but Hitachi’s just have a good feel to them,” Shane says. Being lightweight and stable, the ZX17U-5 can also be easily carted or towed, which for Shane, who is moving between multiple job sites every week, makes transportation a breeze. Having just sold Shane his second ZX17U-5, complete with Doherty Rotary Tilt Coupler, CablePrice Equipment Sales Specialist Daryl Highsted says the ZX17U-5 is a versatile and durable machine, built for busy contractors such as Shane. “It’s exciting to have sold Shane his first machine and then watched his business grow to the point where he required a second machine in such a short amount of time. The ZX17U-5 is a good little machine with great cab/canopy comfort and excellent placement of controls,” Daryl says. When it comes to maintaining his machines, Shane takes advantage of the field service offered by the CablePrice Invercargill team and has positive things to say about the high-quality service he has received. “When my machine was last serviced, there wasn’t much downtime. The Invercargill service staff scheduled a time and came on-site and did whatever needed doing while I just carry on doing my own job,” he says. Shane also speaks highly of the Invercargill staff, recalling the fast turnaround time when there was an issue with his tracks. “I just rang up the operations manager and he got it sorted; no questions asked. He came and picked my digger up over Christmas and had one of his guys fix it. I had it back in January, in time for me to go back to work. They have just been awesome to deal with and are always happy to help,” he says. n

QUARRY & MINING EXCAVATORS Hitachi is one of the world’s market leaders in large hydraulic excavators. Combining engineering excellence with a dedication to quality, Hitachi makes tough, long-lasting machines that meet the challenges of mining. Hitachi’s large excavators range in size, from 80 to 800 tonnes. With the ability to keep running for 24 hours straight, these machines have exceptional durability. Their endurance is further proven by the ultra-large excavators, which have MODEL
working-time records of more than 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field. In mining, cost-efficiency is all important, and Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings.
