TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS Shigeru (Shige) Takatori — Managing Director

W

elcome to this summer issue of Track & Wheel magazine. As the year draws to a close from what seemed like a long winter, I am sure you will be busy making plans for your summer holidays. Rugby World Cup. Is there anything more I need to say other than congratulations to the All Blacks for winning for an unprecedented third time and for once again helping bring New Zealand together as a nation? Like I have said many times before, it never ceases to impress me how this country continues to punch above its weight on the international stage. Another outstanding example of training, determination and competitiveness is our very own CablePrice team, appropriately named the Christchurch Shakers, who after competing in and winning first place in China, are now off to Sweden to represent both CablePrice and New Zealand in the world final of the Scania Top Team competition for 2015.We are all behind you 100 percent and wish you every success. It has been an interesting year with business confidence having declined earlier in the year but latest reports now assuring us that this has rebounded and

is in line with what we are experiencing at CablePrice. We are seeing continued strong demand for our Hitachi products; particularly in the roading and construction industries. One such customer, Fulton Hogan, has again chosen CablePrice and Hitachi as a key supplier of such equipment for its operations around the country. The recent release of the new John Deere L-series skidder and M-series tracked harvesters has kept our equipment sales team busy over the last few months as they demonstrated the L-series skidder at various locations around the country. Even though the forestry industry has been somewhat quieter in recent months, demand for John Deere purpose-built forestry machinery has remained buoyant. This year has seen CablePrice increase its focus on health and safety with both our sales team and our engineering workshop in Christchurch working closely with customers to ensure our machines meet or exceed their site safety requirements. This has resulted in a number of changes that now see our excavators delivered with additional safety features such as flashing beacons and fire extinguishers as standard. Our Christchurch engineering workshop has also cleverly designed safety handrails as optional equipment for a range of Hitachi excavators.

Our commercial vehicle team has been kept busy developing a range of ‘turn-key’ Scania truck options specifically for New Zealand transport customers who require the ability to purchase trucks that are ready to go on the road in the shortest possible time. Also, keep an eye out for the very distinctive new Scania R730 Blue Stream. This is the only one in the southern hemisphere, owned and operated by David Pope Contract Cartage, and will soon become a familiar sight on New Zealand roads. In October, a number of CablePrice customers had the opportunity to travel to Japan and to experience first-hand Hitachi small- to medium-sized excavators being produced and to see what is actually involved in assembling such a precision piece of machinery at the Tsuchiura Works factory. I am sure this trip will have been an experience of a lifetime and one they will all talk about with friends and colleagues for some time to come. As we head into 2016, things are already shaping up for an interesting year with a number of large-scale roading projects underway or about to commence. New Zealand’s new housing markets continue to show no signs of slowing anytime soon and this will continue to put demand on requirements for machinery. Also with business confidence picking up, we are looking forward to yet another busy year at CablePrice. As Christmas awaits, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their continued support and all staff at CablePrice for their hard work and dedication. I wish each and every one of you the very best for a wonderful happy and safe holiday season with family and friends and I look forward to catching up in 2016.

OUR CHRISTCHURCH SHAKERS ARE OFF TO COMPETE IN SCANIA’S TOP TEAM FINALS The CablePrice Top Team, aptly named the Christchurch Shakers have done us all proud by winning the regional finals, hosted in Guangzhhou, China in September. Not only is this a great achievement for our boys but seals their position in the Top Team world championship which is only a few weeks away. The Scania Top Team competition was created to further enhance the skills in Scania’s workshops in order to satisfy customer demands for high availability and premium services. Having grown from a Swedish national competition to a truly global event, Scania has seen thousands of service technicians and parts experts from all over the world participate in this competition to not only develop their competence and skills but also their professionalism and ability to work as part of a wellfunctioning team. The journey for our boys started at the very beginning of 2015 when nine teams from around the country competed in the national semi-finals. This involved two sets of 50 multiple choice theory questions. Competitors were allowed to research before submitting their answers to the training department for marking. The four regions that placed for the finals were Wellington, Whangarei, Auckland and Christchurch which was hosted in Wellington in April. The top team national final was a little more taxing and despite all the teams putting their best foot forward, it was the Shakers who came out on top, sealing their position in the China regional final. The team (made up of four technicians and one parts person lead by team captain Steve Watts, James McCutcheon, Michael Long, David van Schie and Andrew Goodfellow; were well prepared for the impending competition. In the lead up to the regionals, the boys had carried out a great deal of extra study

and conducted competition simulations under the watchful eyes of Russell Dixon and Darren O’Connor from the CablePrice Training Department. Guangzhou is the third largest Chinese city and the largest in South Central China. In 2014 the city’s administrative area was estimated to have a population of more than 14 million people. On arrival, the team was greeted with temperatures of 35+ degrees and humidity between 80 and 100 percent. On top of this was the ever present smog lingering over the city. The day of the competition itself consisted of four practical stations and one closed book theory examination, which was the only test conducted in an air conditioned room – the rest were in the workshop facilities provided by Scania Guangzhou. The stations were very challenging and consisted of three trucks and one bus, all with various faults. The teams were required to find, identify and in some cases fix these faults within the required 20 minute time frame. The heat and humidity were oppressive but the team pulled together and worked extremely well under the conditions. The hard work paid off too as the Christchurch Shakers were later crowned the winners of the Top Team Regional Final. Thus in first place were the Christchurch Shakers with Team Kinetic from Singapore coming in second position. Both teams now go through to the world finals which will be held in Sweden in December this year. Twelve teams from all around the globe will converge on Scania, Sweden for two days of intense competition to find out who will be crowned the world champion Scania Top Team for 2015. Good luck boys, we’re right behind you!

CUSTOMER TRIP

ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

Fourteen loyal Hitachi customers recently accompanied CablePrice national equipment sales manager Alex Kelly and Christchurch branch operations manager Stu Thornley to Japan on our bi-annual Hitachi factory customer trip. Alex tells the story. CablePrice’s Japan customer trips are only partially about showcasing Hitachi’s excavator, wheel loader and dump truck factories. The focus for the majority of the seven days that we recently stayed there was actually spent experiencing the amazing culture and experiences on offer in Japan. The night before our trip we all met up to stay in an Auckland hotel near the airport. The first evening was spent wisely over a few quiet ales, with one or two being consumed along with a meal whilst getting to know everybody. Once all the introductions were conducted, it was an early night for the team to enable us to catch an early flight out to Narita,Tokyo the next morning. With all travelers safely on board the plane, the ten and a half hour flight to Japan passed quickly and we all arrived at Tokyo’s magnificent Imperial Hotel that evening. This would be our base for the next three nights. A meal at a local restaurant proved very entertaining as we all tried local cuisine and did our best to converse with the locals. The meal was delicious except for the battered chicken knees which weren’t quiet as appealing to Kiwi palates as the glossy restaurant menu portrayed them to be! Sunday was officially allocated in the itinerary as a recovery day and people were free to do as they wished, however all of 8

CablePrice

us elected to either accompany Hide (pronounced Hid Eh) on a sightseeing tour of Tokyo or to go with Eri to Tokyo Disneyland. Both Hide and Eri are from Hitachi Construction’s marketing division and are based in Tokyo. (In fact, Eri is almost a token Kiwi having just spent six months based in CablePrice’s national office in Wellington with Alex). The sightseeing option was the more popular one, so Hide had 14 Kiwis in tow. Having a local show us around Tokyo gave us an amazing insight into the city. Within a ten-minute walk of the hotel, we got to see the Imperial Palace and also the amazing gardens and statues around it. A short walk towards the subway was interrupted when we passed an outside antique fair that consumed some more of our attention. Lunch was next at a fantastic sushi restaurant, one that you’d definitely need some local knowledge to find. Next stop was a temple and then we ended up the Tokyo Sky Tree which towers 634 metres above the city. The day rapidly disappeared and we finished up having a quiet beer before we headed out to dinner. Monday was our only day of official factory tours. We started with a visit to the Tsuchiura Works factory; a massive (and very impressive) 490,000-square-metre site. This is where Hitachi Construction manufacture the small to medium sized excavators. This site also houses a hydraulic machinery plant that makes pumps and motors as well as a parts division and various laboratories. The Hitachi Technical Research Centre is also based here. We did manage to spot a couple of New Zealand machines being assembled on the production line which was an added bonus. Our hosts Yusuke Kajita (GM & senior officer application, new product & construction

TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS

equipment division) and Toru Kobayashi (GM application, new product & construction equipment division) looked after us extremely well and then sent us on our way to the Hitachinaka-Rinko Works. The Rinko Works facility sits on a 180,000-squaremetre site within Ibaraki Port (one of Japan’s major ports) and is where the large and ultra-large Hitachi hydraulic excavators are made. The site also manufactures mining dump trucks. Being situated on a port means the massive mining gear can pretty much walk onto a ship. Unfortunately due to commercial sensitivity, photos weren’t allowed in the factory but we did get to see an EX8000 excavator in the early stages of being built for Hitachi Australia (which, when finished, will weigh in at just over 800 tonnes) and also an EX2600 (260 tonnes) Kamikaze Tour Chick en – Trip Masco which was going through final tests before also being t sent to Australia. Overall a great day and one that gave us all a greater understanding of how much labour and technology is involved in putting an excavator together. It was also very evident from both factories of how much ee Tokyo Sky Tr pride the workers have in their profession. That night we were hosted by two Hitachi executives; Yasushi Ochiai (vice president & exec officer GM marketing division) and Makoto Shiraishi (GM Asia & Oceania dept. marketing division) at a private dinner at the Imperial Hotel. Bottles of New Zealand wine from the home regions of all the customers were presented to our hosts. The next three days were spent in Kanazawa, a destination on the northern coast that we reached via a two and a half hour bullet train trip. Kanazawa is the largest city in the Hokuriku region and has a population of 450,000. We managed to visit a lot of the region’s famous attractions during our time there, which included the Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle, the historic village at ShiraKawa, a gold leaf factory, a Geisha Village and also a Wagyu steak house, just to mention a few. We then headed back on the bullet train to Tokyo for Bullet train to Kanazawa one final night in the city before our return flight back to New Zealand. That evening we dined at Gonpachi. The movie set used in Kill Bill staring Uma Thurman (Directed by Quentin Tarantino) is based on this restaurant. It’s particularly famous for the scene where Uma’s character single handedly takes out the Crazy 88 gang. The evening was a lot of fun and involved a large amount of hilarity and noise from the Kiwis. Things that really impressed the entire tour group were the friendliness of the Japanese people, for example the few times that we got (moderately) lost in the subway system, locals frequently came over to help us, with many being keen to try out their English skills on us. If the bullet train states that it will leave at 9.42am, it will leave at 9.42am, not possibly 9.50am or 10am like our rail system. The toilet seats in our hotel were also a frequent talking point – the heated seats took a bit of getting used to. Finally, our hosts Hide and Eri were outstanding. Eri even managed to find us an English Pub in Roppongi that was open at 4am and was screening the World Cup games so a few crazy Kiwis could go watch the All Blacks vs France game. Incidentally the French supporters outnumbered us in that pub but they had all left by half time! Overall a thoroughly great trip and the general consensus View from Sky Tree view was that it was a once in a lifetime experience.  ing platform

TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS

JOHN DEERE 670GP GRADER Te Horo demonstration What location could possibly be better for an operator to put a John Deere 670GP Grader through its paces than a tight and winding rural road? Fortunately CablePrice’s National Equipment Sales Manager Alex Kelly knew of a suitable road; one in his home town of Te Horo. Te Horo is a small, rural Kapiti Coast town with a population of just over 650 people. Anyone driving an hour north of the capital on SH1 might have been familiar with one of Te Horo’s famous bright red landmarks; the Red House Café. At least it was a landmark, until in early July when the 100-year-old native timber building burnt down - fortunately for the locals there is still another great caffeine source just around the corner! Having lived in Te Horo for almost 20 years, Alex knew of a local road that could do with a grade. Managone North Road is approximately 3km long, is quite narrow in places and also very windy. It links up via a Department of Conservation walking track to Mangaone South Road in Waikanae. It has also been pretty busy lately with logs being trucked out of a block at the end of the road, creating some pretty big potholes and rough surfaces. As all roading contractors can testify, it is no longer that easy to just go about grading a road. This machine demonstration involved calling the local District Council (Kapiti Coast) to see if they would give consent for one of their roads to get a free grade. Funnily enough they were keen but first approval was needed from the residents. With necessary residential consents obtained, a traffic management plan needed to be put in place that Downers New Zealand were able to assist with, as they have the contract for maintaining the road. As a courtesy, and also to avoid meeting a fully laden log truck head on, the logging contractor gave us a heads up of what day their trucks wouldn’t be on the road (incidentially they must have forgotten!). Finally all the stars aligned and we managed to provide a suitable trial ground for the John Deere 670GP Grader. The John Deere 670GP is fast becoming an increasingly popular choice for New Zealand contractors, principally for these reasons - it features a Tier 3-certified fuel-efficient nine-litre diesel engine that delivers great displacement, power and lugging ability. It also comes equipped with (as standard) JDLink Ultimate™ which enables you to have 24/7 computer access to your grader’s location, utilization, dashboard alerts, fuel consumption, diagnostic codes and hours. (Plus Geo-fencing, curfew, and numerous other 10

CablePrice

capabilities). Operator comfort is also a major focus for John Deere. The spacious walk through cab has great visibility, a heated air suspension seat, 13 directional air conditioning vents, tinted glass, as well as adjustable front and rear shades, just to name a few. All the GP (Grade Pro) models arrive Integrated Grade Control (IGC) ready, which greatly simplifies the addition of any grade-control system, being factory equipped with bulkhead connectors, sensor mounts, electrical wiring harnesses, integrated controls, and exclusive universal moldboard mast mounts makes installing Topcon,Trimble or Leica grade-control systems neat, quick, and noninvasive. In this instance, the 670GP demonstrator was set up with a Trimble GPS system. Automated cross-slope capability simplifies holding a consistent slope by reducing operation to a single lever. An operator simply selects the desired slope and the side of the blade that will be manually controlled. Once set, the system automatically adjusts the opposite blade-lift cylinder to maintain the slope. This is a Grade Pro exclusive that helps veteran operators be their best and inexperienced operators get up-tospeed faster. Feedback from the Te Horo demonstrations was very positive. Operators commented that they were very impressed with the machine’s easy access filter bank and simple to clean, swing out coolers. One grader operator, with over 30 years’ experience, albeit on a more traditional antler rack set up was particularly surprised at how quickly he adapted to the eight armrest-mounted fingertip-actuated controls. The machine’s durability also caught attention, with the larger than usual axle shafts, biggest-in-class articulation joint roller bearings and heavy duty transmission being positive discussion points. The biggest problem the CablePrice team faced when doing the John Deere grader demonstrations was keeping the machine long enough to demonstrate. Our intention was to do a national roadshow to showcase the machines features. Sufficient John Deere graders were brought into the country to satisfy half of the entire country’s annual requirement for last year – for all manufacturers, however we sold all of these graders within a few months - even the demonstrator model was sold! Alex mentions that there are plans afoot to set up another demonstration unit, which will be available shortly – please see your CablePrice Equipment Sales Team for a demonstration or further details. 

JOHN DEERE L-SERIES SKIDDER DEMO

On 1 September this year, CablePrice (NZ) Ltd released the latest and highly awaited John Deere L-Series forestry Skidder to the market and to kick things off, it was launched with nationwide demonstrations. These were conducted in five regions and the machines showcased to many forestry customers, with the first taking place in Nelson/Marlborough with the all new 848L model Skidder. The 848L is a massive upgrade from the previous 848H, now standard with the John Deere PowerTech 6090H engine boasting 265hp, 19.1sq ft grapple and large 1700 series Teammate V axles. This is reportedly the second largest axle John Deere has in operation with the largest belonging to a 50-tonne wheel loader. Based at various client worksites throughout the region, loggers were given the opportunity to jump in the driver’s seat and experience the full capabilities of the machine. While the poor weather conditions proved difficult for our staff on site, this was not the case for the 848L skidder which made light work of some 200m plus drags.

The demo’s then shifted north to the Hawke’s Bay where the focus was on the bigger 948L Skidder. The 948L is new to the John Deere Skidder family and claims to be the largest 4x4 skidder on the market. Fitted with the same 6090H engine as the 848L, the 948L boasts an impressive 281hp engine, 22.3 sq ft grapple and the same large 1700 series Teammate V axles. Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty were next on the list of regions to demonstrate the 948L before heading up to Northland where the keys were handed over to its new owner Lars Rosewarne of Rosewarne Contractors Ltd. Rosewarne is one of CablePrice’s largest forestry clients and Lars is a big supporter, with John Deere making up the bulk of his forestry machinery. He is also due to take delivery of a new 848L to accompany this 948L before the end of the year. The demonstration model 848L was purchased by Dawson Havard of Masterton; the first 848L to join its fleet. If you would like more information on future John Deere forestry demonstrations and to witness the performance for yourself, contact your local sales representative and they will keep you posted. 

CERTIFICATE OF FITNESS – ONE-STOP SHOP

CablePrice has recently been exploring the option of undertaking Certificate of Fitness (COF) in our workshops. We are now pleased to announce that our Christchurch branch has been complied by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and will have commenced issuing COFs on site by the end of November. With the recent changes in the legal requirements, our CablePrice Christchurch branch has now become a one-stop shop for our customers, with vehicle assessments, repairs and full COF capabilities. Stuart Thornley, Operations Manager for CablePrice, Christchurch, says: “We saw a large amount of wasted time for our customers due to the limited availability of COF space at the testing station and the flow on affect this was having on our customers’ business. We have two technicians that have completed their certification for issuing COFs.This gives us the ability to complete COFs in our own workshop so we can guarantee a better service and eliminate wasted time for our customers. The feedback we have received has been very positive and like us, our customers are pleased to see us introducing this new service in our workshop.

Colin Bowden, General Manager of After-sales for CablePrice says: “We already offer a wide range of services to our customers and see the ability to offer onsite COFs as a natural fit for our business. While Christchurch is our first COF facility, we expect additional sites to be added over the next year, particularly in high demand areas.” 

National Excavator Operator

competition

Next year – 2016 – will mark the 22nd year that the National Excavator Operator competition has been running and interest in competing has never been stronger. In the lead up to the National finals, regional competitions are being hosted throughout the North and South Island from October 2015 to February 2016.The winner from each region – 12 in total, will then go on to compete in the National final which will be hosted in conjunction with the Central Districts Fieldays, Fielding in March 2016. The competition itself demonstrates to competitors and the audience, just how remarkable the Hitachi excavator is. And while the event draws in crowds of people, the “mini dig”, featuring a Hitachi ZX17U-5 giraffe excavator is proving to be a novel way of entertaining the kids. One of the largest rounds of the regional excavator operator competitions is held at Auckland’s ABS showground’s in conjunction with Big Boys Toys. This year’s event took place 30 October to 1 November. The Auckland round of the competition featured an impressive 40 of the regions finest excavator

operators all competing for the crown of the Auckland regions top excavator operator and a chance to represent the region at the National finals. The competition was run over the three days, consisted of a series of challenges designed to test the skills of the operator at the controls of a Hitachi excavator. Such challenges included using the excavator to neatly stack tyres and dropping ping pong balls from the excavator bucket into a cocktail glass. While all competitors performed well under the pressure of watchful crowds, it was Nathan Gibbons of Stevenson’s who took out first place and secured his position to compete in the National finals. Keep an eye out for competitions taking place throughout the country over the coming months and be sure to get along with and support your local operator as they do battle for their shot at the National title. TOP DRIVING TIPS

What are the best techniques for reducing fuel consumption? Cem Kizilkaya is one of Scania’s most experienced driver coaches and has created this list of sure-fire ways to drive more economically.

CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT

Many people don’t realise just how important it is to check the wheel alignment on the truck and the trailer. Badly aligned axles and wheels result in extra fuel consumption and premature tyre wear. They also increase the strain on the axle, increasing wear. So, my advice is: have a wheel alignment carried out on your trucks and trailers regularly. This will extend the life of the components – and lower your fuel consumption.

The Transport Laboratory is part of Scania’s Research & Development division. It serves as a proving ground for continuously testing new technology and driver techniques aimed at improving the efficiency of the transport industry. With the help of fuel masters like Kizilkaya, the lab has achieved impressive results across its six years of operation, lowering its fuel costs and cutting its own carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent. So, what’s the secret to more economical driving? Here are a dozen of Cem Kizilkaya’s best tips:

Have a wheel alignment carried out on your trucks and trailers regularly.

Cem Kizilkaya, driver coach, Scania

There are some situations when additional lights like these come in handy, but most of the time they’re basically unnecessary ornaments. Try to remember that every additional item that you add to your truck – including lights, rotating beacons and extra bumpers – increases its air resistance. For example, additional lights can increase fuel consumption by two percent. All Scania trucks are designed for minimal drag. My advice is: don’t mess with that. Avoid the knick knacks and save on fuel instead!

COAST MORE OFTEN

When approaching a hill, how can I make sure that I’m driving as fuel-efficiently as possible? At the top of the hill, I make sure that I release the cruise control. I also release the accelerator pedal. I can then enjoy a free ride downhill, without wasting a single drop of fuel. A good target for longhaulage drivers is to try to coast for at least 20 percent of each journey. In fact, that’s Scania’s own target for our daily operations. So, come on: take the challenge and try to beat us!

TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS PLAN AHEAD

Planning ahead is the key to successful eco-driving. Being closely aware of the situation ahead of you will allow you to make good fuel savings. When I’m approaching a roundabout, I try to anticipate how the cars in front of me will behave. I decrease the truck’s speed, use its momentum, and roll through the roundabout. I use the same technique when I’m approaching a red light. I keep the truck rolling at low speed. I then try to time things just right – so that I can pass through when the light turns green – without touching the brake or the accelerator pedal.

CHECK YOUR TYRES

Do you have the right tyres on your truck? And are your tyre pressures correct? Good, that’s two ways of avoiding worn tyres. All too often, we meet drivers whose tyres are not adjusted to the right pressure or not suited to the task at hand. So, make sure you check the tyre pressures at least once a week. And regularly check the electronic Tyre Pressure Monitoring instrument – or TPM – in the cab. That way, you will save fuel and reduce the wear and tear on both your tyres and your vehicle.

Have a wheel alignment carried out on your trucks and trailers regularly. This will extend the life of the components – and lower your fuel consumption.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT GEAR

Every little bit counts when it comes to eco-driving. Fitting your truck with side skirts will lower its air resistance – and its fuel consumption. And if you mount air deflectors like these on the sides of the cab, well, that’s even better. You will lower the fuel consumption by an extra five percent. You should also make sure the curtains of your curtain-sider are properly stretched. And, don’t forget to tighten the retaining straps and to tuck in the loose ends.

CARRY OUT APPROPRIATE MAINTENANCE

Do you want to keep your truck on the road? Do you want to achieve 99.8 percent uptime, like the Scania Transport Laboratory? The workshop is the place that makes this possible. Checking your truck in for regular maintenance by Scania’s service technicians will keep it in prime working condition. You’ll ensure your vehicle is performing at its best and avoid having to pay for extra repairs. All this also adds up to lower fuel consumption, lower emissions and decreased wear and tear on all components.

AVOID IDLING

There are many myths surrounding idling. Some drivers think it’s the best way to warm up the engine. Others think it’s good for the turbo. But most of the time idling is completely unnecessary. The only thing you’re doing is wasting fuel and increasing emissions. My recommendation is to turn off the engine whenever you get the chance. If you’re stopping for more than 20 seconds, then you should definitely switch off. You’ll not only save fuel, you’ll save money.

CHECK THE BRAKES REGULARLY

If you frequently use the engine retarder on your truck, it’s likely that the brakes on your trailer are not being exercised enough. This can cause them to drag or bind. Dragging brakes will, of course, lead to a drastic increase in fuel consumption. This is why you should check the brakes on both your tractor unit and trailer regularly. My advice is to check the trailer brakes at least once a year, as part of a planned maintenance stop.

DROP FROM 90 TO 80KM/H

Before you overtake the truck in front of you, think again. Instead of speeding up to 90, it might make more sense to maintain a nice steady pace of 80 kilometres an hour. This will make your boss happy. You will cut the company’s fuel costs by 10 percent, you will reduce the risk of deadly accidents by 40 percent, and you will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle. And remember: doing 80 rather than 90 increases your journey time by just one percent. So the choice is clear: slow down to 80.

L-SERIES

GAME-CHANGING SKIDDERS Backed by over a half-century of experience, inspired by loggers and proven in the toughest conditions imaginable, the new John Deere L-Series Skidders have officially entered the New Zealand forest with features that promise to increase uptime and productivity, while lowering daily operating costs for loggers. These game-changing machines are John Deere’s most reliable and productive ever, redefining expectations of what a skidder can accomplish for any logging operation. The introduction of the L-Series also marks the celebration of 50 years of manufacturing skidders for John Deere, a major manufacturing milestone that demonstrates John Deere’s forward thinking and ongoing commitment to developing solutions for the type of challenges loggers face in the forest. To design the game-changing L-Series Skidders, John Deere collected invaluable input from loggers around the world to form Customer Advocacy Groups (CAG). The CAG provided real-world insights on what loggers need in a skidder to be successful. Engineers then devoted 250,000 hours designing prototypes based on these fresh ideas, and continued to refine the machines until they got them exactly right. The L-Series Skidders are built for the way loggers work, and they seem to agree: “They’ve done pretty much everything we discussed.A big improvement is the size of the cab. Loggers will work longer and happier without strain.” – Roger Ferguson, Sika Logging,Taupo, New Zealand The new L-series consists of four models all with larger grapples; the 648L (15.9 sq. ft.), the 748L (19.1 sq. ft.), the 848L (19.1 sq. ft.), and the 948L (22.3 sq. ft.).All four models are powered by John Deere 6-cylinder PowerTec engines ranging in size from 6.8 through to nine litres, delivering from 157kW (210hp) to 210kW (281hp) in power. In the forest, uptime is the name of the game, and the L-Series Skidders have several innovative features that deliver more uptime at a lower cost that will help loggers reach new levels of productivity like never before.  16

Kiwi EXPERIENCE My name is Eri Fujioka and I work for Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM),Tokyo. I feel privileged to have recently had the opportunity to join the CablePrice sales team as a trainee earlier this year. After four years at Hitachi Construction Machinery Headquarters, I was finally able to experience the New Zealand market first-hand. I was seconded to CablePrice Head Office in April to work on three assignments. The first assignment was to carry out market research. In order to better understand machine requirements of the New Zealand market, it is important for us to understand the market demand – the so called ‘Kiwi way’.The more that I learnt, the more I realised the difference between New Zealand and Australia. This helps explain the reason why I received a lot of requests from CablePrice when I was working in Japan. It was a great experience that showed the relationship between the work that I do in Japan and the local market. I could directly see how my role related to the market as I frequently communicate with CablePrice from HCM headquarters. In addition to this, the positive comments and feedback from our customers regarding their opinion of HCM was always appreciated. My second assignment was to gain a better understanding of the New Zealand culture and get along with people. I believe that drinking beer together is the fastest and easiest way to get to know people. Sadly New Zealanders do not go for after work drinks as much as I had expected which was disappointing. Or

maybe CablePrice people were just too shy, eh? However, five months was enough time for me to realise that I am a big fan of New Zealand. I observed the beautiful nature, enjoyed some of the best coffee I have ever tasted and had the opportunity to meet lovely people, or maybe people were nice to me because they wanted to get tickets for the Rugby World Cup in 2019? Life in New Zealand gave me a lot of new experiences, such as driving a car. I had never driven a car after I passed my driver’s licence test back in Japan but I needed to drive a car in Wellington. Lots of people were worried about me being on the road.To cut a long story short, eventually I became a good driver! No speeding tickets, no parking fines, no dents in the car! Now I know I can drive from Wellington to Taupo and how to drive on when an animal jumps out in front of my car on the pitch-black roads. The last of my assignments was to improve my English skills. I lived in the UK for 2.5 years so my English level was based on that experience. The typical Kiwi accent was hard for me to understand. This is why you might have seen me just smiling and nodding when talking to Kiwis! Thanks to the CablePrice people for teaching me ‘’Kiwi English’’. Am I lucky or unlucky that I now have a wee bit of a Kiwi accent? I really want to thank everyone who I met in New Zealand. I am looking forward to continuing to work with CablePrice in the future. 

The Montabert Silver Clip is designed for use on a wide range of compact to mid-weight machines, and is built with robustness, power and adaptability in mind. They’re key features of the Silver Clip product range and are well in evidence on the Silver Clip hammer. A single-piece body with no tie rods to potentially stretch or break help keep downtime to a minimum, and it’s a patented Montabert system. The breaker also has blank-fire protection as standard to help minimise impact wear, and an automatic pressure regulator increases the lifespan of the attachment. That’s another Montabert patented system, by the way.

POWER

High power and performance are at the forefront of the hammer’s list of assets. The energy ratio is higher than all current standards on this range of breakers, enabling optimum efficiency regardless of the material to be broken, and an energyrecovery device captures and recycles the rebound energy, making it available for the next impact stroke. So the efficiency of the attachment matches the versatility. The Silver Clip is easily adaptable to a wide range of excavators, and offers optimum performance, even with a high back pressure. Compact dimensions provide excellent ergonomics and make this breaker ideal for any work. Standard noise isolation on the complete product range ensures reduced noise on job sites. STANDING ON TOP OF AN EXCAVATOR is now deemed to be working at heights A new health and safety legislation is behind the majority of larger job sites around the country now insisting that safety rails are installed as standard equipment on larger excavators. The key principle of this health and safety requirement is to give workers the highest level of protection possible. Basically anytime that a person is required to be on top of an excavator, there must be something to protect them from falling eg. a handrail or fall arrest system. To meet this increased demand of health and safety compliance, CablePrices’ engineering division has designed a range of bolt on safety rails for Hitachi excavators. Through clever design and engineering, once these handrails are installed, they look as though they could have come from the factory. 

ased in Masterton, cartage contractor David Pope is a long-time owner of Scania trucks. The first truck he bought was a Scania R142 when he began his business in 1984 and his latest Scania is the top-of-the-line, limited edition, Scania R730 Blue Stream V8. After so many years being a Scania customer, it will be a unique addition to his fleet and one he is rightly proud of. He says he will use this latest truck “for a bit of everything”. Over the years, he’s owned six Scania’s and his admiration for them hasn’t diminished. “I am not into anything else. I like everything about European trucks I’ve had others but always come back to Scania.” He is particularly impressed with the number of technical advances that Scania has made over the years,“They’ve improved 100 percent but that’s not to say older models weren’t good too.” So what is it about Scania trucks that he likes? “The answer is 22

simple. I find them reliable, economical, comfortable and stable on the road,” he says. As well, he finds that having Opticruise transmission makes driving “a truly comfortable experience; you just put it in gear and away you go”. David first worked as a driver in the trucking industry for Transport Wairarapa in Masterton. But after two years he decided to establish his own business: David Pope Cartage Contractors Ltd where he began working for a local livestock agent Ivan Grieve in Featherston and continued to cart their livestock for 26 years. In 2010, he sold that business but kept two Scania’s: one a R620 livestock unit and the other a R730 tractor unit. “Most of the work I do now is heavy haulage transport, bulk liquid, fruit and livestock. I also do a lot of contract work for CablePrice, delivering their new trucks all over New Zealand.” David thoroughly enjoys this work and it’s no wonder why. Not only does he get to see the countryside from the top of the North

The answer is simple. I find them reliable, economical, comfortable and stable on the road.

Island to the bottom of the South Island, he gets to drive the best trucks on the road. His work often involves delivering a new truck or shifting heavy machinery. When Track & Wheel spoke to him he was due to deliver an excavator to the CablePrice branch in Silverdale near Auckland.“I get a call that tells me there’s a truck or heavy machinery to move and off I go.” When it comes to trailers for his own trucks, David prefers to lease or rent rather than own, because it gives him greater flexibility to alter his unit to suit what he is carrying. His track record and the great business connections he’s made reflect David’s reputation for always being reliable and providing good service. David’s newer trucks make good use of some of Scania’s latest technology, in particular, Scania Communicator and ScanPlan repair and maintenance. “I always tell people that every Scania owner throughout the

country gets terrific service. All my trucks are on the Scania maintenance programme, ScanPlan and I wouldn’t have it any other way; I see it as preventative maintenance, almost like an insurance policy.” “With ScanPlan, I pay so much per kilometre, depending on the application such as line haul, livestock or logging.” Scania Communicator is also invaluable for allowing David to manage maintenance, his scheduling, remote diagnostics and fuel economy. “How this works is I receive text alerts via Scania Communicator, which communicates with me or one of my operators in advance. For example, I could receive a text or an email saying that my truck is due for a service and it would then count down the days on an average kilometre. This gives me the ability to plan when my services will be scheduled. If I didn’t have it, it would be up to me to check on hub metres, speedo readings and servicing. By hooking up to their maintenance program, it’s all done for me.” CablePrice

TRACK & WHEEL

For after- sales service, David deals with Matt and Amon at CablePrice in Wellington and Kyle and Mark at Palmerston North branch along with their respective teams for all his maintenance requirements. David has managed to tackle the modern technology available from Scania, thanks to Kyle and Matt who he says “have been most helpful taking me through anything new.” David’s newest acquisition is the Scania Blue Stream which is one of only 200 limited edition Blue Stream worldwide. Sporting limited edition metallic blue with silver black and pink striping; it is an outstanding unit. The limited edition model pays tribute to Scania’s V8 heritage and is based on the Scania Streamline model first introduced in 1991.This was the first truly aerodynamic cab in the heavy truck industry. This Blue Stream has an R-Series cab, styled and enhanced in collaboration with legendary Swedish custom truck builder Svempa Bergendahl. Each truck bears its series number on a Blue Stream badge on the passenger side of the dashboard. David’s truck is limited edition number 053 and will be the first one in the southern hemisphere.

areth White has plenty of positive things to say about his latest acquisition; a John Deere 909MH tracked harvester fitted with a Duxson FX142 felling head. The JD909MH, which is the biggest in the range of John Deere’s five latest tracked harvester models, is the first of its kind to be sold in New Zealand. Gareth is the director of G White Logging Ltd, based in Rotorua. Currently he and his nine-man swing yarder crew are working in Kinleith Forest on contract to Hancock Forest Management (NZ). He has had the JD909MH harvester for three months and already it is proving its worth. The logging crew work in steep country and it is here that the JD909M is showing its strengths.“We are finding the John Deere is in a league of its own and has more power in every aspect; track power and lift and swing power. It functions very quickly and is responsive. There is also the ability to alter the hydraulic speed so you can slow it down for the novice operator,” says Gareth. “One of the biggest benefits of this machine is the operating comfort. The self-levelling base makes you feel as if you are operating on the flat. Not only that, it is enjoyable to drive and has a well laid out cab. An operator often works 10 hour days, so stability and comfort is a big consideration, especially on steep terrain. It means the operator is not trying to hold himself in the seat. My operator thinks it is awesome,” says Gareth. Another reason he likes the JD909MH is its cab design.“The visibility compared to the earlier model is great. It has a floor to ceiling front window so you can see directly in front of you. This allows the operator to be aware of any potential hazards for both himself and the machine.” The JD909MH harvester works well in conjunction with their winch system too.“The winch assisted bulldozer, built to my design, operates by remote control. In the JD909MH there are six speed settings for the machine travel speed. So if you are working slowly, you can dial it down to two or when you’re working faster you can dial it up to six in the tracks as required. With a normal excavator you only have two speeds; fast and slow.” The need to gain as many productive hours as possible and having a machine that maximises performance was one of the reasons for Gareth’s decision to buy the JD909M.“The downturn in the forestry industry means we can only produce a certain quota, so getting in and getting the job done efficiently is paramount. The harvesting machine’s ability to perform well is definitely a huge benefit for us in that regard.”

TRACK & WHEEL

the harvest Gareth saw the JD909MH and the Duxson FX142 Felling Head at this year’s logging conference in Rotorua and took a closer look. “We wanted to be ahead of what is going on in forestry and when it comes to technology, the John Deere is well ahead of everything else in my opinion. After a bit of research, I found that the JD909M was the most advanced tracked harvester on the market and the same goes for the head. “Jason Donaldson (Donaldson Mechanical) designed the head and it’s the latest in felling head design. In addition, we liked the felling head because it is physically big, but no very heavy and this comes down to being a clever design with builtin strength. This gives us the ability to grab large bunches of trees at one time, hold onto them really tightly and easily move them around. It is a bit taller than other felling heads and that helps us a lot when it comes to felling direction.” When comparing the JD909MH to his previous feller buncher, Gareth says the outstanding feature is the self-levelling platform. He is also noticing how easily it is to work on.“Everything is laid out so you can get to it easily. With a normal excavator, it is really hard work trying to stay on top of leaks and you can’t physically access a lot of places on an excavator. “However maintenance won’t be a problem for some time, as the JD909MH is still under warranty from CablePrice for 6000 hours or three years. After sales service and support such as this is key,” he says. “The way our machinery is supported is important and that makes the difference as to whether we will buy there again or not.” Gareth says the support he received from CablePrice sales rep Terry Duncan has been excellent. The machine arrived on the job and has run faultlessly. Gareth, 33, has been in the forestry industry since he was a teenager, working firstly alongside his father Ken White on contract work and then working for other contractors for seven years. When Ken started his own forest business, Gareth ran a logging crew for him, but then bought one of the logging crew from him in 2013.“It was time to build my own business,” he says. In spite of the ups and down in the forestry market, Gareth is feeling optimistic. He knows he has the backing of his logging crew.“They all know the direction we are heading in; our main focus is to strive and achieve the best we can.” Gareth says he also has a good relationship with Hancock Forest Management who he says,“do their best to keep us at our normal capacity. They are good like that.We see a positive future here; I wouldn’t have bought the JD909MH if I weren’t confident in that future.”

A BUILDING

LEGACY

W

hen Nick Rowell started Legacy Contracting 18 months ago, with himself, one staff member, and a handful of clients, he had no idea how quickly his Wellington civil engineering firm would grow. However staff numbers have already leapt to 23, and Nick has since invested in a “large number” of trucks and diggers, most of which have been sourced from CablePrice. “I didn’t expect to grow so quickly. We ended up working on the War Memorial Park Alliance project, which really set us up in the market. Since then, our name has got out there and the phone rings constantly with new work.” Legacy Contracting is now subcontracted to many of the larger roading companies and carries out siteworks for commercial projects. It also has a growing number of residential and other civil projects on its books. Establishing a rapidly growing business has been quite a leap for the former digger driver who had a year’s experience in a managerial role for another firm before starting his own business. Nick says having CablePrice as a supply partner has been essential in helping him manage the transition. “I’ve gotten to know everyone at Cable’s on a first name basis and with a simple phone call to any department, can get things sorted really quickly.Their service and support is really good.” He has been a fan of Hitachi diggers after driving them for 11 years with another firm. “I’ve had a lot of experience with Hitachi’s and knew I wanted the brand when I finally bought my own machines. They are comfortable to operate and will perform anywhere.”

Legacy Contracting now has four of these “great, reliable diggers” on its fleet, with its fifth and six Hitachi excavators on the way. “One of the new machines is a brand new ZX48U-5 excavator, which is due to arrive in December. I’m really looking forward to having it on the fleet.” The ZX48U-5 is part of new series of compact excavators launched by Hitachi. It is sure to meet Nick’s requirements for 28

operator comfort given its easy-to-use controls, multi-monitor and luxury seat. The excavator’s low fuel consumption design should also provide him with excellent fuel efficiency on the work site. Legacy Contracting also recently bought an Isuzu FTR750M tip truck and Silver line SC28 breaker from CablePrice. “The tip truck has had a hot box fitted to turn it into an asphalt truck and is going awesome. Our driver has had it from brand new and absolutely loves it.We’ve had the hammer for about eight months, and it is going good too.”

The backup support and servicing offered by CablePrice has been a big drawcard for Legacy Contracting, says Nick. “Cable’s deliver reliable, high quality gear at a good price. The reps are great to deal with and I believe there is no one better in Wellington when it comes to servicing heavy machinery than Warwick Bernon in the Cable’s workshop. He is very clever.” Nick says he has considered other brands but has struggled to find anything that matches the Hitachi product. “I’m sticking with Hitachi, which has been part of my life for a long time.” CablePrice

A NEW

REALITY

t’s a rarity for the CablePrice sales team to be approached by a 22 year-old wanting to buy a new Hitachi digger. But that is just what happened at National Fieldays, Hamilton earlier this year, when young Gisborne contractor Luke Hayes visited the CablePrice stand. “It was great that sales rep Paul Laird took me seriously and was up for doing the business to help bring my dream to reality,” says Luke. 30

CablePrice

Investing in a brand new machine at such a young age is no small feat, but it is something Luke had been planning for some time. “I’ve wanted to have my own Hitachi digger since I was at school, and drove one while doing work experience for a local contractor. It has taken a lot of hard work and a lot of money to get here.” For the last five or six years since he left school, Luke has worked hard driving tractors, diggers and bulldozers for other

contractors, and eventually saved enough money to invest in a machine of his own. So why did he decide to buy new, rather than sourcing a secondhand machine? “My dad and granddad have always believed you go the ‘Full Monty’, otherwise you may as well not do something. It made sense to me to have a machine from new, as you know its history and what it’s done. There are too many unanswered questions with a second-hand machine.” CablePrice rep Paul Laird says he was surprised by Luke’s age when he visited the stand at Fieldays, but was impressed that he had a clear idea of what he was after. “Luke had obviously put a lot of thought into the purchase and we were really happy to help and support him at the start of his contracting career. He’s worked hard towards the new Hitachi machine and we’re happy to see him be successful.” Luke worked with CablePrice on finance options and took possession of his new mid-sized, 12-tonne Hitachi ZX120-3 excavator in late July. Around the same time he launched his business; Digg It Gizzy, which provides earthmoving, farm and track work, residential site

works, metalling and transport services in the Gisborne region. His newly minted excavator has been signwritten and he has “gone all out” to paint his truck in the same colours. Luke reckons the four-year warranty from CablePrice is a “good deal”, and he likes that servicing is covered under the plan and is “a breeze”. The new excavator has had a good workout pulling out kiwifruit vines in the last few months and will move on to a range of other work including clearing and forming tracks on a farm “in the backblocks”. “I plan to target farm work as the digger is a powerful, versatile, good sized machine that is well suited to the work. I’ve bought a tilt bucket and thumb to go on it for that reason.” The young entrepreneur also has his own truck for transporting the digger to job sites, and provides a similar transport service for other digger operators. “Things are going well. I’m rapt with the machine, which is everything I wanted and the service from CablePrice has been fantastic. Hopefully within the next four or five years, I will be in a position to buy another machine from them, and maybe even employ some staff.” CablePrice

VERSATILITY

rom the glamour of coach touring, to delivering heavy-duty work on a daily Inter-City route, the Scania product has proven its versatility for Tranzit Coachlines, one of New Zealand’s largest coach companies. Keven Snelgrove,Tranzit’s transport and operations director says the company’s fast-growing fleet of Scania coaches impresses at both ends of the transport spectrum, and also against the other makes and models in its fleet. “The reliability, fuel efficiency and creature comforts of the Scania coaches are right up there. They are also quiet runners, with emissions where they need to be.” Keven says the Scania’s ease of operation is another big plus. “We get a good trickle out of the Euro5 engines and the new transmissions take away all the fuss, enabling our drivers to concentrate more on their passengers.” Tranzit Coachlines has been family owned and operated for more than 90 years.

32

CablePrice

It provides a full range of bus and coach services with nationwide coverage, including urban and Inter-City services, touring, and bus and coach hire for group tours, corporate charters, conference transport, school and sport group transport, and special event transport. Keven says the Scania product has been a relatively recent addition to Tranzit’s fleet. “We inherited our first Scanias after a business acquisition in the mid-2000s and put our first new coach with CablePrice on the road in 2007.” The Scania ScanPlan Maintenance and Service contract was a key factor in Tranzit’s decision to start incorporating more Scanias into its fleet, he says. “Ten years ago, vehicles were moving into the new age of electronics, and we weren’t convinced about how bulletproof the technology was. CablePrice was offering a 10 year maintenance service under ScanPlan, which showed a high degree of confidence in its products.”

TRACK & WHEEL

He says the decision has paid off, with planned maintenance keeping its Scania fleet in prime condition, resulting in very little downtime. “One of our very first Scanias; a double-decker Intercity coach has since done around two-and-a-half million kilometres, (two million kilometres of those under ScanPlan) and is still performing well.” Tranzit is currently adding four to five new Scania coaches to its fleet each year. The bulk are Scania K400 6x2, fitted with Scania Opticruise transmission and Euro5 EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines, as well as a fixed tag axle, drum brakes and retarder. Keven says the company is getting excellent fuel economy from its Scania fleet, particularly from its newer models, which are delivering even more benefits. “We took possession of five Scania units just in time for the Cricket World Cup which have delivered an additional four to five percent improvement again. These results are really impressive and result in significant cost savings.”

We do our own in-house servicing, but a large number of our vehicles continue to be serviced by the CablePrice team under ScanPlan. Their turnaround times are impressive with most coaches back in the fleet in less than a day. The Scania product is spread across Tranzit’s whole operation, including its Inter-City service and Kiwi Experience brand; as well as the Pacific Tourways and Grand Pacific contracts it operates in New Zealand and Australia. It is the Inter-City service where the Scanias are really put to the test, with most of these coaches travelling around 200,000kms per year. “The touring coaches do around 70,000kms per year so don’t have to work quite as hard. However they have to be at the top of the game for comfort, luxury features and noise level. Reliability in the tourism sector is another huge factor. People travel to see the sights, not sit on the side of the road if a breakdown occurs.” Keven says the company values the relationship it has developed with CablePrice over the last few years, particularly

with Eddie Jowett, National Manager Bus and Coach. “We’ve dealt with Eddie all the way through. He is straight up and honest which makes the process extremely easy.” The company also has a lot of dealings with the CablePrice workshop team, he says. “We do our own in-house servicing, but a large number of our vehicles continue to be serviced by the CablePrice team under ScanPlan.Their turnaround times are impressive with most coaches back in the fleet in less than a day.” Keven says Eddie Jowett is the go-to person at CablePrice if a rare problem or issue should occur. “Eddie is a good guy who will sort out any problem in no time. He’s our own little MacGyver and plays a big part in our ongoing relationship with CablePrice.”

FINDING EFFICIENCY WITH

G

etting the right trucks was an important step for a 13-year-old Kapiti Coast scaffolding business. Safe Scaffolding’s work takes them to a vast range of sites, with some very narrow, urban streets and driveways which can be a challenge for their men and their trucks. Managing director, Renee Lincoln tells of a job they did recently on a house which features on the television programme, Grand Designs New Zealand. Aptly named ‘The 45-degree house,’ it was on an unbelievably challenging site, up a one-way road which had very limited parking outside the property. Renee’s father Tony Lincoln and nephew Luke Wara along with Carlum (Cozzy) Tatana, all of whom are still part of the team, started Safe Scaffolding in 2002. Since then they’ve become a trusted name in their field. As well as Wellington and the Hutt Valley, the company also covers Manawatu from Palmerston North through Horowhenua and Martinborough. 36

CablePrice

The work it carries out is 80 percent residential but the intention is to add more commercial work to their portfolio. Safe Scaffolding has recently gained its national body, SARNZ (Scaffolding,Access and Rigging NZ) accreditation. It has also implemented a cloud based digital scaffold tagging system which comes from the UK. They’re an innovative company with big plans for the future and part of that is the addition to its fleet of two brand new Isuzu trucks. In early October this year, it took delivery of an Isuzu FSD650 auto. This was in addition to the Isuzu FSR650 manual that it bought last year. One of the reasons for this was to continue to work on its efficiencies.“When we analysed the data from work we’d carried out with the FSR650, we found it was far more efficient than the smaller trucks we’d been using. We can load a lot more in one trip, which, at the end of the day, makes our operation more profitable,” says Renee.

TRACK & WHEEL The FSR650 was its first big truck (previously it ran four- to fivetonne trucks with up to five metre-long trays) and its increased capacity made them realise how much better it was.“It’s an awesome truck and is still many of the guy’s favourite,” she says. “The six-speed, air assisted hydraulic control gearbox makes it very easy to drive. The multi-media hands-free Sat Nav kit is an additional extra and is really useful for the scaffolders who often need to find their way to several jobs in a day. They also opted for the rugged seat covers and rubber floor mats which are great for their line of work. When it came to buying a second Isuzu, they wanted the same specs as the FSR650 but in addition, they also wanted electronic controlled air suspension and fully automatic transmission to see how it worked, especially on the hills. Already they’ve noticed the benefit of air suspension, particularly if a load is heavier on one side than the other.“The air suspension will automatically level out the load. This is really useful and our drivers do notice a big difference,” says Renee. Both trucks have drop side decks that are 2.25m wide and 6.5m long with clip bins situated beneath for the smaller equipment. The decks were built at Belmont Engineering in Lower Hutt. The reason for this particular size deck was to minimise the amount of swing to the rear of the truck, particularly when negotiating hills and driveways.“Any bigger and it could be a problem.”

Being able to take heavier loads is another benefit.“Previously we could only take 4-5 tonnes of scaffold. The Isuzus can carry over a tonne more with the extra 1.5m of deck and all round improved capacity. The drivers also like the fact that they can store their gear in the spacious area behind the seats in the cab. “With wet weather gear, tools, harnesses and safety hats, this is a huge benefit as previously the guys had to store this on the deck of the truck no matter what the weather was doing.” CablePrice’s Isuzu rep in Wellington, Brian McDermott spent time with the Lincolns and their business consultant to ascertain their needs and offered them a range of options. Renee admits, “We were slightly concerned that the Isuzu might be too big, but it has turned out to be just what we needed. That’s why 12 months later, we decided to get another one.” So far so good – Safe Scaffolding hasn't had any problems with its trucks.“Our only issue was when we dented the front bumper of the Isuzu FSR650. However, we were really impressed at CablePrice’s response time to fix it. They have also done servicing for us on a Saturday, which was good, because we didn’t lose a day’s business. That’s excellent service.” 

working-time records of over 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field. In mining, cost-efficiency is all important, and Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings!
