TRACK & WHEEL - NEWS

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS Shigeru (Shige) Takatori — managing director

W

elcome to all our customers and readers to this June issue of the Track and Wheel magazine. With consumer confidence throughout New Zealand on the rise, we are definitely enjoying the effects here at CablePrice. I am pleasantly surprised at just how well individuals of New Zealand do when it comes to competing on the international stage. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate one of our own team members on their recent achievement at an international level. Luke Larson from our North Shore branch recently took out the title of Oceania’s Hitachi Top Technician and with this comes the opportunity for him to compete at the world finals in Japan in July, taking with him the pride of not just CablePrice but the nation. You can read more about Luke’s success on page 12. Following on from our very successful cadetship intake programme last year that saw the addition of eleven new recruits across our nationwide network, we are soon to be embarking on the first of our 2014 cadet recruitment drives to select the next group of candidates to take up the challenge of becoming a trainee technician with CablePrice. Who knows? Maybe one of them will be a future Hitachi Top Technician competing on the world stage. Another very pleasing recent announcement comes from the New Zealand Equipment Suppliers Association (NZESA) which, to quote from its recent sales figures, CablePrice has been ranked as the number one equipment supplier for the first three months of this calendar year. This is an amazing achievement and something we are all very proud of as it continues to reinforce the confidence our customers have, both in CablePrice as a company and with the products we sell and support. We continue to focus on strengthening our operational capacity and improving efficiency through technology, with the use of newly-purchased fit-for-purpose field service vehicles at a number of branches, brake roller testing equipment in our Whangarei branch, and the latest European Stertil Koni truck hoist

comprising of one 10-metre long platform and one 11-metre long platform in our Invercargill branch. Our recent efforts have resulted in a number of significant milestones, not least being the recent delivery of 11 new R-Series Scanias to linehaul service provider Retko Specialist Transportation, which cited high levels of safety, reliability, and technology as key features when it was looking to upgrade its fleet. Hitachi Sumitomo may not be a name that is familiar to many of our readers, but it is actually a major player in the field of heavy crawler cranes. Recently, we delivered to Manukau-based Preco Precast Concrete a new Hitachi Sumitomo SCX550E with an operating weight of 55

tonnes. John Deere continues to make significant in-roads into the New Zealand forestry market, as more and more owners and operators see the benefits of using purpose-built forestry machines. We currently have on order for a customer what is believed to be New Zealand’s first wheeled harvester, a John Deere 1470E. Planning of a detailed feature on this wheeled harvester in a future issue of Track and Wheel is underway. Continued interaction with our customers is a key focus for us. Activities like our recent Bell B30E-series in-quarry demonstrations and our support as the major sponsor and equipment supplier to the NZCF excavator operator competition for 2014/15 continues. Also, once again we will be at the National Fieldays from 11 – 14 June at Mystery Creek, with a full range of products on display, so please be sure to stop by and say hello to us at our usual corner site — E105 and E107. I am delighted to announce the recent appointment of Paul Laird to the position of account manager for the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast region. Paul will be a familiar name to a number of you as he, for the past four years, has been our national mining manager. You can read more about Paul on page 6. Thirty years of service with a company is a considerable achievement in anyone’s books and not something that happens very often, so it gives me great pleasure to congratulate and thank not one but two of our staff who recently celebrated 30 year’s of service with CablePrice. Colin Bowden, general manager parts and service, started at CablePrice head office in 1984, and Barry Sheat, equipment salesman for the Invercargill branch, started with CablePrice back in 1984 as well. Congratulations to you both. I would like to conclude on another positive note, in that it has been a very enthusiastic start to 2014 with New Zealand’s unemployment reported to be at its lowest level since mid-2009. Consumer spending looks to be on the increase and general business confidence continues to show signs of positive growth and investment intentions. Thank you for your continued support. As always I thank all the staff at CablePrice for their hard work and dedication.

Farewell Ian Hector After a career spanning several decades with CablePrice, Scania product engineer Ian Hector retired on 10 January, 2014. Ian first started with CablePrice on 6 October, 1988, as a marketing assistant and was then appointed as the Wellington branch manager. Ian temporarily left the company to take up another role, but returned to CablePrice in 1998 as a Scania product engineer, and continued in this role until retirement. Garry Leitch, national commercial vehicle sales manager, says “I have only enjoyed Ian’s company for just over two years and I appreciate the work he has done for CablePrice. For me personally, I thank him for his support and his help.” Ian’s product knowledge, reliability, and wicked sense of humour will be greatly missed.

Long-service milestones CablePrice takes pride in acknowledging those who have achieved long-service milestones. The company’s long-service scheme is designed to recognise those who have 10, 20, 30, and 40 years of service, displaying loyalty, dedication, and high levels of performance. Since the last issue of Track & Wheel, five additional staff members have achieved milestones as part of the company’s scheme of recognising long service. Congratulations to Colin Bowden from head office in Wellington and also Barry Sheat from Invercargill, for achieving an outstanding milestone of 30 years of service. Special recognition must also go to Martin Weldon from Christchurch, for achieving a milestone of 20 years of service. CablePrice would like to thank all of its employees for their commitment and loyalty and the company looks forward to the growing pool of experience in the coming years.

New account manager appointed CablePrice is pleased to introduce Paul Laird as the new account manager for the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast region. Paul is based at our Hastings branch and is handling all equipment sales requirements for the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast. Paul is excited about this opportunity and is enjoying the new role so far, saying,“I am pleased to be back in the ’Bay and working with our customers and staff here. With our state-of-the-art facility in Hastings, we can offer an extremely high standard of sales, parts, and service to our customers and it’s great to be a part of this.” Paul has been around heavy equipment his entire adult life and brings with him a wealth of industry knowledge. For the past four years, Paul has held the position of mining product manager at CablePrice head office, where he was responsible for sales management and product support for CablePrice’s mining equipment product range.

Fittingly, CablePrice Hastings is where it all began for Paul, having worked there as an apprentice diesel mechanic in 2000.

Paul then went on to complete his heavy automotive A-Grade qualification, before he ventured to the UK for his OE. While overseas, Paul worked as a plant and equipment manager for a utility and ground works company and following this he based himself in Mongolia for two years, where he worked as a mechanical supervisor of an alluvial gold mine. Paul has been working in various roles with Hitachi, John Deere, and Bell product most of his career and has a comprehensive understanding of modern equipment. Paul also understands the dynamics of industry and the challenges and demands faced by all within it. “Paul’s extensive experience in the industry and his vast knowledge of Hitachi, John Deere, and Bell products will be a valuable asset to our customers in the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast region. We consider ourselves fortunate to have Paul on board in the new role,” says Mark Palmer, general manager sales and marketing, CablePrice.

BARRY SHEAT – 30 YEARS AT CABLEPRICE CablePrice’s Invercargill branch celebrated a big milestone in April this year, with Barry Sheat reaching 30 years of service with the company. Below are some words from Barry about his time at CablePrice. I didn’t think when I returned to CablePrice in 1984, after a short stint previously in 1975/76, that I would still be here 30 years later. My first nine years were spent in the workshop as foreman. During this time, the Invercargill branch was just one workshop for all equipment, including trucks, which were mainly Mercedes-Benz, as CablePrice was the agent back then. In 1993, after my time in the workshop, I moved into sales. I was offered the sales position for equipment, which I accepted and have been selling ever since. Over the years there have been a number of changes, both at CablePrice and with the equipment we sell. CablePrice has experienced various changes in ownership and management, which has seen a mix of styles in how the company has been run. With the equipment, there has been remarkable changes in the performance of machines, largely due to today’s improved technology. While machines in 1984 were doing similar work to now, in 2014 many aspects of the machines can be monitored remotely, right down to real-time monitoring of 6

CablePrice

engine over-heats.All this information is then recorded by the manufacturer and can be acted on if required. This was unimaginable 30 years ago, where all monitoring of equipment was only done by the operator. The intensification of the dairy industry in the south has created more opportunities for contractors who service the agricultural industry down here. Forestry has also gone ahead in leaps and bounds, with a lot of farm forestry coming on stream now. These two industries have increased the demand for new machines with a variety of attachments — many of which didn’t exist 30 years ago. All-in-all, the past 30 years have been sometimes challenging, but mostly enjoyable. I would like to thank the staff I work with, and also the customers I deal with, for positively contributing to my 30 years at CablePrice.

30 years of service – Colin Bowden In March this year, Colin Bowden, general manager parts and service, achieved a remarkable milestone of 30 years with the company. Below are some words from Colin about his time with CablePrice. My employment with CablePrice started in March 1984 as a customs clerk. At this time, the company was part of the Cable Price Downer Group, an iconic New Zealandowned company incorporating famous historical names such as A & G Price, Downer Construction, and William Cable. CablePrice was itself a very large company, with around 700 employees, and had a significant importing and shipping department which I was part of. Our head office was based on The Terrace in Wellington.A fond memory is the use of mainframe computers only just starting to take off and most of our processes were manual. We also had a ‘telex’ room where we delivered our hand-written messages to be sent by the telex operators as our main way of communicating with overseas suppliers.

I am still marvelling at the introduction of the fax machine. Over the years I’ve seen many changes within CablePrice. Household names such as Toyota and Mercedes Benz have departed, but been replaced by extremely strong brands, such as Scania and John Deere. There have also been several ownership changes. In some cases these have been quite unsettling and have certainly helped me to appreciate our current

Hitachi ownership as being very stable and supportive. Since my joining, I have progressed through management positions in the shipping and warehousing departments and the parts business to reach my current role of general manager — parts and service. This progression is probably quite unorthodox, as many people would expect me to have a highly-technical background. I think this is indicative of the opportunities that a good company like CablePrice can offer.Working as a team with many dedicated and knowledgeable people over the years has helped me to achieve a successful career with the company. The last two to three years have seen some of the biggest changes to the management structure I’ve seen in my 30 years. I truly believe that this, along with other initiatives in the pipeline, will enable us to be a highly successful company in the future. On reflection, I am very proud to be part of the company development over the last 30 years but also very excited about what the future holds.

New roller brake tester for Whangarei CablePrice has recently completed the installation and commissioning of a new roller brake tester at its Whangarei branch. “With the growing Scania customer base in the region, this was seen as an essential investment in our customer services available from this busy branch. A roller brake tester allows for quick and effective testing of each wheel brake, significantly reducing diagnostic effort to analyse brake performance and system defects,” says Martin Wheldon, CablePrice national workshop operations manager. Whangarei operations manager Gordon Brown says the new equipment is a timely investment.“While it will help us offer added-value services with greater flexibility in helping customers plan their R&M to minimise downtime, it holds even greater potential to assist transport companies to obtain better operator ratings through regular brake-testing and improving CoF results.” With the Danish-manufactured BM Autoteknik brake testers supplied by Sulco Tools & Equipment having been the product of choice for CablePrice workshops for over 15 years, the company and technicians have a huge amount of experience operating these machines. The BM12200 model has fully-integrated axle weighing and axle and chassis load simulation to perform tests to the latest requirements for vehicles with load-sensing brake systems.

The PC-based control package fully aligns with the NZHVBC requirements and with NZTA brake test protocols and all test profiles are stored on the PC. The branch staff have been fully trained by Brett Higgins of Sulco and, combined with their extensive Scania brake system expertise, will ensure a high level of vehicle safety and compliance. Exciting opportunities for logging industry NATIONAL EXCAVATOR OPERATOR COMPETITION 2014 FINAL During March, Feilding hosted the Central District Field Days, which took place over three days and was home to the final of the National Excavator Operator Competition. CablePrice was right amongst the action at the Field Days, with our site being located on the Contractor’s Federation site in conjunction with the operator competition. This year the National Excavator Operator Competition celebrated its 20th anniversary, attracting contestants the length and breadth of the country. Interest in the event has never waned with operators, with many of the competitors who didn’t make the finals still travelling to Feilding to watch their colleagues compete. The public, too, has come to realise that excavators and their drivers warrant a lot more attention and respect than previously imagined and that being an excavator operator is a viable career option. The final provided the public with a glimpse of just how dynamic the Hitachi excavator can be, from putting a basketball through a hoop, to slicing a cake, and pouring cups of tea.The competition had all the operators putting themselves and the Hitachi machines through their paces. Unfortunately with cyclone Lusi due to arrive, the organisers were forced to shut down the Field Days at lunchtime on Saturday. The results from the competition were compiled and the overall winner was declared as Brian Hoffman — a customer of CablePrice. Brian started operating diggers in 1972 and bought his first Hitachi in 1976 8

CablePrice

to become an owner-driver. One of his specialities is installing swimming pools, a move which eventually led him to buying another business (that of importing the actual pools from Perth), so now he digs the hole and installs the physical unit. The pool side of his business is his favourite task because every client is happy and excited to get a swimming pool. Brian has won 10 regional competitions, attended the national event 10 times and this year was his second win. Second place went to Michael Jones from Wellington and Steve Galbraith from the Hawke’s Bay took out the third spot. Congratulations to all those who competed on the day, making it a great event.

At the actual Field Days, the attendance was good with a lot of enquiries for Hitachi machines. The Scania livestock demonstrator unit attracted positive enquiry also and as always the demand was high for CablePrice merchandise and models, and CablePrice even sold a complete Isuzu engine on the first day. CablePrice looks forward to being a part of the next competition commencing at National Fieldays, 11–14 June. Good luck to everyone who wants to get involved in the 2014/15 rounds. CablePrice Engineering has embarked on an ambitious program to position itself as the supplier of choice for Hitachi forest machine builds. Within our sales and marketing, product support, and after-sales teams, we have a huge combined store of knowledge and experience the team can apply to improve built-up machine outcomes for our customers. Given the demanding conditions and expected operational lifecycle of a forestry excavator, building a reliable and productive machine is paramount for customers. Our aim is to build modularised components that can be assembled on the machine by suitably skilled labourers at a number of strategic locations to produce a log loader or harvester build. The key to achieving our aims is getting the design right. The Christchurch-based team, led by CablePrice Engineering supervisor Rene Bovendeerd, has been busy consulting and drafting CAD and assembly files for the team of six. Valuable input during these stages has come from logging contractors, Government WorkSafe representatives, and industry-leading engineers to ensure that current and future regulations are met.

As a Hitachi-owned company, CablePrice has the ability to fully understand the specification of the Hitachi-based machine and ensures that any added machine package complements the base model, whether it’s built on a standard ZX240-5 or ZX330-5, or specialist logging versions like the ZX250L-5, ZX290L-5, or ZX400L-5. We utilises our product support team’s input to ensure any hydraulic or electrical fit-out is performed to exacting standards, and performance or reliability of the whole package is never compromised.

CablePrice Engineering’s core aims are: • Operator safety enhanced by meeting current ISO standards; • Maintenance man access maintained or improved; • Body and undercarriage resilience increased; • Weight addition minimised; • Cooling package efficiency maintained; • Hydraulic performance maximised; • Reliability maintained; and • Warranty protected. In the bush, safety and reliability are number one, and that is where we aim to be.

FREE 3 POINT WINTER CHECK!! That’s right Winter is here…………………… And with winter comes the usual problems of flat batteries, wiper replacements and coolant faults. So, why do we have problems with batteries in winter? Well scientifically speaking it’s all to do with electrons. When battery cells are cold the movement of the electrons that create energy in your battery slow down. If the battery cells are weak, there is insufficient chemical reaction to generate the electrons. So increased cold = less volume of moving electrons generating energy = less available power to start your engine. Ever find yourself needing an extra coffee on those cold winter mornings before you get going? its the same thing really.

USED PARTS DEPARTMENT NOW WRECKING: HITACHI ZX225USRLCK-3 only 9000 hours on the clock

Winter also brings trickier driving conditions due to darker days, more bad weather and road spray on your screen. Clear visibility is key and wipers should be checked more regularly and replaced as required. Coolant doesn’t escape the cold weather either. The inhibitor level in your coolant is designed to prevent freezing, (a condition more prevalent in Invercargill than Whangarei ) but a decreased inhibitor level increases the chance of electrolysis or engine cavitation in any areas. To avoid this have your antifreeze level checked and topped up as required. To avoid the potential for breakdowns over the winter period CablePrice is offering a

CABLEPRICE’S 2014 HITACHI TOP TECHNICIAN OFF TO WORLD FINALS The 2014 national final of the New Zealand Hitachi Top Technician competition took place on Friday, 21 March, testing the skills of the top three technicians who reigned successful during the regional rounds of the competition. Regional rounds were held earlier in the year, which saw 11 highly-skilled technicians narrowed down to just three — two of which were CablePrice master technicians. The technicians who were successful in securing their spot in the national final were Sam Reece from CablePrice’s Greymouth branch, Luke Larson from North Shore, and Chris Futter from Palmerston North. The ultimate champion on the day, taking out first place and the title of New Zealand’s Hitachi Top Technician was North Shore’s Luke Larson. Second place was Sam Reece and coming in third was Chris Futter. The competition was very close with only 2.5 marks between second and third place, however there was a clear points margin to first place, successfully securing Luke with the win.

12

CablePrice

The competition was made up of a one-hour closed-book theory test and a 75-minute practical, which involved inspecting the machine and identifying general servicing issues with a Hitachi excavator and providing recommendations. The competitors were also required to identify three faults with the machine during the practical segment, which consisted of an engine fault, a hydraulic fault, and an air conditioning fault. Darren O’Connor, technical trainer at CablePrice, compiled all the theory questions and practical tasks for the day, ensuring it was a well-organised and successful competition. Luke then went on to represent CablePrice at the Oceania regional competition in Singapore on 24 – 25 April. The competition was intense and competitors were put through their paces, but Luke demonstrated impeccable skill and ability, enabling him to take out the top spot in the competition and secure the coveted title of Oceania’s Hitachi Top Technician.

The competition was made up of technicians from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia,Thailand, and Singapore and consisted of a theory and practical round. Luke was the only technician to complete the practical section in very trying conditions — this fantastic effort, backed up by a very solid theory round, secured the win for Luke. The Oceania competition has been held for the last seven years and CablePrice has taken out the top spot four out of those seven years. “Our previous winners of the Oceania competition came from the Christchurch and Silverdale branches — both two from each branch,” says Darren O’Connor. “Thanks must go not only to Luke for his efforts leading into the competition, but also the staff at the Silverdale branch for all their support. This is the second world finalist from this branch so our branch supervisor, Geoff Bellinger, must be doing something right, as he only has four staff including himself,” he says. Luke will now have the opportunity to put his skills to the test at the world finals, which will be held in Japan in July. From everyone at CablePrice, congratulations, Luke, for an exceptional result in the competition and good luck for the world finals!

CablePrice Cadets 2013 intake In October last year CablePrice launched the first-ever nationwide intake of Cadets.A CablePrice cadetship is a preemployment ‘boot camp’ with the aim of preparing a group of selected applicants from across the country to become trainee technicians with CablePrice. From the large number of applications CablePrice received, the officials were able to select a shortlist by using a behavioural benchmarking technique. Following this evaluation, they took a group of the top applicants through an assessment centre, aimed at testing their abilities. The applicants underwent two practical assessments, a written, mathematics, and mechanical aptitude test, and an interview. The successful applicants from the assessment centre were then offered a cadetship and came to Wellington for an induction week. This was an intense week during which CablePrice cadets learned all about the company — its history, departments, and expectations. During this week they also met with Hurricanes professional development manager Steve Symonds and Hurricanes player James Marshall. The next stage continued in January and the cadets travelled back to Wellington to complete CMT1, 2, and 3. Following this training, they were provided with a record of learning booklet to complete in February and were sent out to their respective branches. On 10 March, 2014, the 2013 cadetship programme ended, and resulted in the appointment of 11 new trainee technicians across CablePrice’s nationwide network. The new recruits will

BLUE STREAM – cheating wind the Scania way Scania now presents a custom-built, limited edition truck based on the Scania Streamline model and Scania’s unique V8 heritage. Blue Stream has an R-series cab styled and enhanced in collaboration with Svempa Bergendahl, the legendary Swedish custom truck builder. The unique truck will be produced in 200 numbered units in Södertälje as a tribute to the original Scania Streamline introduced back in 1991 — the first, truly aerodynamic cab in the heavy truck industry. “With the re-introduction of Scania Streamline last year, we got a lot of positive feedback from customers who had been driving the original 3-Series Scania Streamline back in the day,” says Kristoffer Nyberg, product manager, long-haulage at Scania Trucks.“Many especially recalled the striking appearance of the light blue truck with pink and purple striping. When we decided to honour that icon with a limited edition model of the new Scania Streamline, we of course wanted to involve Svempa, since there is no better man for the task. The limited edition Blue Stream is characterised by a unique metallic exterior, striping, and interior details and is

Inside the cab, a wide range of features are included while other options can be specified by the customer. Probably the most visible interior styling feature with Blue Stream is the unique, ventilated leather seats, with their exclusive stitching in contrasting colours. “Blue Stream will be a unique but yet affordable truck within its segment,” says Nyberg.“The styling is bold and striking, but make no mistake, we are talking about trucks that are extremely well-suited for any tough transportation task that requires the kind of solid power that Scania’s V8 engine provide. Coupled with a full air deflector kit and typical hallmark values, such as Scania Opticruise and class-leading fuel efficiency, Blue Stream will be just as productive as any other Scania.”

Small changes make a

BIG DIFFERENCE John Deere E-Series skid steers and compact track loaders developed using customers’ brightest ideas.

T

he new E-Series line of skid steer loaders and compact track loaders (CTLs) from John Deere feature enhancements and improvements that were developed after extensive input from customers. The new line includes five skid steer models and four new CTLs, each with interim Tier 4 or final Tier 4 engines, and several improvements designed to enhance operator and machine productivity. The improvements made to the E-Series skid steers and CTLs are the result of extensive market research and John Deere’s Customer Advisory Group (CAG) process, which solicits input and ideas from customers. For the E-Series, customer input largely dealt with areas of the machines that improve on uptime, productivity, and lower daily operating costs. CablePrice equipment product manager Riki Corley says, “The new E-Series really lives up to the Deere brand. It has all the features and benefits that customers come to expect from a premium product and is perfectly complemented with the latest in engine technology to increase performance whilst reducing emissions.” “The CAG process is a great idea, too. It provides an opportunity for a select group of customers to table their thoughts and ideas on the previous model’s positives and negatives, which ultimately go into Deere’s decision-making, with the end result being the new E-Series skid steer range,” he says. The large-frame skid steers and CTLs feature a flat floor design with 25 percent more foot room than previous models, giving operators more comfort in the cab. Lower noise levels also contribute to reduced operator fatigue and increased productivity. All models include low-effort electro-hydraulic (EH) controls for additional comfort and ease of operation. The EH controls are available for ISO, H, and foot control patterns. In addition, the E-Series features an option to allow the operator to switch between all three previously-mentioned industry control patterns.

Other new standard features include connect-underpressure auxiliary hydraulic couplers, and a new courtesy lighting feature that automatically shuts the machine lights off after operation. The mid-frame models have been improved to enhance performance and make the machines more versatile. The optimised boom design provides best-in-class boom and bucket breakout throughout the lift path. It also offers greater reach at truck-bed height and increases lift height to the hinge pin. In addition to the standard improvements, both the large- and mid-frame E-Series models offer several options that further enhance ease-of-use and productivity. Like its larger siblings, the mid-frames also include the option for switchable controls to allow operators to choose between foot pedals, ISO, and H-pattern. Other options include a new keyless start feature and a ride control option that cushions the boom under heavy load for a smoother ride. The E-Series offers several customer favoured features that carried forward from the D-Series, including a pressurised cab with best-in-class visibility, auto-idle to help conserve fuel, and best-in-class service access. In addition, industry-leading options such as the reversing fan will also be available. The skid steers and CTLs are powered by Yanmar 3.3L or 3.1L diesel engines. The large-frame model engines provide up to 10 percent more horsepower than the previous D-Series models. Engines over 75hp will meet interim Tier 4 emissions requirements, while engines under 75hp will be final Tier 4 compliant. The engines in all E-Series models feature cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with an exhaust filter consisting of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF). The E-Series consists of nine total models. In skid steers, there are three large-frame models (326E, 328E, 332E) and two midframe models (318E, 320E). In CTLs, there are two large-frame models (329E, 333E) and two mid-frame models (319E, 323E). All models will be compatible with more than 100 available Worksite Pro™ attachments for optimal jobsite performance.

Here is Scania’s latest investment in innovation. Vehicles are tested in the new climatic wind tunnel to ensure they can cope with extreme weather conditions in all kind of markets.

n arctic storm is raging on top of The Mountain, as the Scania Technical Centre in Södertälje, Sweden, is familiarly known. But sub-zero temperatures (-35 degrees Celsius) can swiftly shift into a hot desert storm. All possible climatic and weather conditions can be simulated in Scania’s climatic wind tunnel. After years of intensive engineering work, the SEK 500 million investment is now ready to challenge each test vehicle with extreme weather conditions. 18

CablePrice

Since Scania is selling vehicles in more than 100 markets, the climatic wind tunnel is an important tool for developing vehicles and services adapted for special customer needs and local conditions. “This is the first climatic wind tunnel in Europe adapted for full-size trucks and buses and probably the only one in the world,” says project manager Lars Hult. This offers several advantages: winter tests can be carried out in the middle of the summer without needing to transport prototypes to a location with the right climate, and the company avoids

having to rely on unpredictable natural weather conditions. The facility will play an important part in optimising future vehicles when it comes to fuel efficiency and improved uptime, as well as lower noise and emissions. These parameters can be measured and analysed in widely differing climatic conditions. Comprehensive tests will mean even higher quality. Lead times for development of new products can also be shortened. “Repeatability is a great benefit,” says Lars.“We can test again and again under

exactly the same conditions until we have the answers we need. This isn’t possible in reality.” Another advantage is that the company can conduct vehicle tests that focus on various types of applications. It is important for Scania to test the performance not only of the chassis but also of different superstructures, such as tipper trucks for construction and mining operations, concrete mixers and timber trucks. Fully-built buses are another area where testing possibilities were previously limited to field tests. Each test run in such a tunnel takes at least a day, and up to a week, to complete. The test vehicle is driven into the test cell after preparation in the large prep hall. It is parked on rollers — one for each set of wheels, enabling simulation of speeds of up 100kph, the maximum for many trucks and buses. At the front end of the cell is a huge air nozzle, with a surface area of 13 square metres, from which air is forced over the vehicle. Snow or rain is also pumped through the nozzle when required. The software used to communicate with the vehicle in the tunnel was developed in-house, allowing Scania to adapt the facility as the test vehicles change. Erik Söderberg, senior engineer at Scania, has been involved in the project since the early pilot studies in 2008. He points out that Scania can now test secret prototypes in realistic environments, or as close to reality as you can get. “Many of the tests are completely new in the truck world,” says Söderberg.“For instance, now for the first time we can measure emissions under realistic operating conditions. And above all, it’s quite novel and incredibly efficient to be able to carry out all kinds of tests in the same rig.”

The new climatic wind tunnel offers the possibility of testing the vehicles of the future. The comprehensive tests will mean even higher quality and shorter lead times.

Looking towards 2030 Scania’s Technology Road Map (TRM) describes the knowledge that the company will need over the next 20 years in order to ensure the necessary competencies are in place. Looking ahead towards 2030, the TRM lays the groundwork for developing technologies as diverse as inter-vehicle communication, alternative fuels, and new composite materials. “It has forced us to define what goals we want to aim for. It’s not about what exact customer solutions we should develop, but rather what we feel is needed so we can develop these in the future,” says Tony Sandberg, head of Scania’s research support office. Here are some of the innovations and technological solutions that Scania is working on in the short and long term: 1.Automated queue assistance — an autopilot in trucks that can take over operation in traffic jams and follow surrounding trucks in a motorway queue. The driver can then take care of administrative work in the cab, for example. 2.Automated truck driving in convoys (platooning) — a system featuring computers, advanced radar and Wi-Fi systems that allows convoys of trucks in tight formation. The lead vehicle sets the pace and communicates with vehicles in the convoy so the other drivers do not need to touch the pedal. 3. Electrification — Scania has initiated collaboration with Siemens on electrically-powered vehicles and is focusing on two different methods of power supply — either from electrified roadways or from overhead cables. B REBIRTH New owners, new trucks, and new branding have given Retko Specialist Transportation a major image overhaul.

20

CablePrice

ut it is almost a case of back to the future for the nationwide freight company. Two of the firm’s five new owners, Duane McFarlane and Andrew Forbes, previously owned the company from 1999 to 2008, while the 11 new Scania trucks making their way into Retko’s fleet are a tried and trusted brand, used by the company for many years. Duane says that after selling Retko to focus on another company, Challenge Logistics, he and Andrew never imagined they would eventually buy it back. But when the opportunity presented itself, the experienced transport operators, both with well over 30 years in the game, decided to team up with Rob Covich, Shayne Barns, and Stacy Gibson and take it on. “Retko was always a large supplier of linehaul services to Challenge so the acquisition has given us greater control over our freight network.” Duane says it was immediately apparent to the new owners that Retko needed an upgrade. “Rebranding and upscaling the business is an on-going process at the moment, right down to our staff uniforms. As well as purchasing the Scania trucks, we’ve added five

new metro vehicles to the fleet across our four branches, and have 12 sets of new trailers being built.” Since Retko was established in 1982, it has grown from a company providing linehaul services between Auckland and Wellington, to a nationwide operator providing freight solutions to a diverse range of industries. The firm has depots in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, and Wellington, where it operates two swing-lifters and has a managed warehousing facility. Retko moves large volumes of general freight and all classes of hazardous or dangerous goods throughout the country on a daily basis and also has a reputation for providing freight services for special projects, says Duane. “In the past we did a lot of music and movie industry work, and even provided Cirque du Soleil with freight solutions on three of its visits to New Zealand. With the resources to solve the most difficult logistical challenges, we’ve also handled everything from company relocations to special vehicle deliveries into remote areas.” When it comes to its truck fleet, Duane says the company demands the highest levels of safety, reliability, and technology — something Scania delivers again and again. CablePrice

21

TRACK & WHEEL

“Our relationship with CablePrice and Scania goes back to 1999, when we bought Retko the first time around. One of our big priorities is safety, and these vehicles are built around driver safety features.” Fellow Retko directors Shayne and Rob were heavily involved in the purchase of the new Scania R 560 V8 trucks, which include six tractor units and four rigid trucks. These have all landed in New Zealand, with six already operating in the Retko fleet. “We went for the R 560 because we felt they were the best vehicle for the 50-tonne environment. We’ve already ordered a fifth Scania rigid truck which is currently being built in Sweden,” says Shayne.

TRACK & WHEEL He says Retko takes its responsibility to provide the best equipment and best training for its staff very seriously. “Our guys are our most valuable asset and we need to get them home safely to their families every day.” Key comfort and safety features in the new Scania trucks include a premium driver’s seat with heating element and air suspension, and a fully air-conditioned and climate-controlled cab, which make the long hours behind the wheel a far more comfortable experience. Driver safety has been enhanced with airbags in the steering wheel and pre-tensioners in the seat. All vehicles have in-cab cameras, are speed-limited, and feature Scania’s new H7 headlights with LED day runners, along with new LED tail lamps, indicators, and backing lights.

The Scania brand has already proved itself to us over many years. The trucks also look the part and our drivers are very happy. You can’t ask for more than that. “Each staff member driving the new trucks was provided with an official handover that included teaching them how to get the best out of the vehicles. It is critical they understand the equipment and how to use it in a safe manner.” Rob is impressed with the truck’s on-board computer technology that rates the driver in five disciplines and gives them a percentage based on their skill level. “This technology identifies areas where they might need to improve. The feedback from the drivers so far has been very good.” Retko has taken its commitment to safety a step further by employing its own full-time driver trainer, who also trains the Challenge Logistics team. “The by-product of having the best gear and a high level of training is greater fuel efficiency, savings in repairs, maintenance and tyre costs, and good safe driving habits across our team. The company definitely gets a payback,” says Rob. The Scania V8 engine is already well known for its performance, with plenty of power waiting to be unleashed when it’s needed up steep hills or when overtaking. However, the powerhouse also provides impressively good fuel economy, around the same as a truck with a smaller engine when driven correctly. Although the fuel efficiency of Retko’s new Scania trucks is yet to be fully tested, Rob expects good results from the Ecocruise optional cruise control system, which enables the truck to go into economy mode, potentially saving up to four percent fuel use, depending on application and driving conditions. Cableprice national commercial vehicle sales manager Garry Leitch says he is “delighted” that Retko has shown continued loyalty and commitment to CablePrice and the Scania product. 22

CablePrice

“We place a high value on the long-term relationship we’ve had with Duane and Andrew over many years, and are pleased to supply Retko under its new ownership and directors. Fleets like Retko depend on Scania’s reputation for reliability, fuel efficiency, and safety. Also, the back-up support of CablePrice’s nationwide network of branches and service dealers should meet their on-going needs.” Garry says ensuring driver training was implemented from the outset was a key prerequisite for Rekto,“such are the high standards and culture that they have put in place within their organisation”. “The relationship with Retko is as strong as ever and we hope it will strengthen further as Retko continues to upgrade and expand its operations. This sale highlights the capability of CablePrice to become a total solutions provider for our customers, an area we are continuing to target.” Duane agrees the companies have enjoyed a “fantastic relationship” along the way. “CablePrice has always treated us as a key client. I’ve been buying trucks and dealing with truck companies for many years, but have always found the CablePrice team willing to go the extra mile. They have a genuine desire to provide good service, and if something isn’t quite right they fix it quickly.” Ultimately, the proof is out on the road where the trucks are performing day after day. “The Scania brand has already proved itself to us over many years. The trucks also look the part and our drivers are very happy. You can’t ask for more than that.” CablePrice

BELL B30E 30E

B

ell’s latest model, the B30E, has entered the ADT market. The new E Series replaces the D Series in the 18- to 30-tonne Bell ADT class. To promote the latest offering from Bell, CablePrice held demonstrations throughout the country for the B30E, the first of which was held at Pokeno, approximately 60km south of Auckland. This site worked well, as the round-trip of around one kilometre from loading point to tip-off area contained pretty much everything an ADT would normally encounter, from a steep hill to a soft clay run. Abe Wharepapa was the lucky operator to get behind the wheel of the brand new B30E first and, after a quick tutorial, was then off to try a few loads.Although he’d only been driving the ADT for a short period, he soon recognised improvements on the Bell B30D that he usually operates. Better visibility, increased comfort, and drive capacity were the differences Abe commented on. Finding a steep incline, he demonstrated the Hill Assist feature, which ensures zero roll-back when carrying out hill starts — all part of the technological progress that ensures Bell is a front runner in the ADT market. Pulling to a stop under the waiting excavator, the park brake is automatically

set when the ‘neutral’ gear is selected.A few minutes later and fully loaded, the B30E pulls out of the chewed up soft-clay loading area.Abe commented on the superior traction and automatically engaging diff locks. Partway down the fairly steep hill,Abe disengages the retarder by keeping a little pressure on the accelerator pedal, allowing the B30E to pick up speed, before taking his foot off the pedal to allow the retarder to engage again. At the tip area, the park brake once again automatically engages as the ‘neutral’ button is pressed, followed by the ‘tip’ button. The tipping body quickly raises in 15 seconds, completing the load.

The machine With a 2:1 heaped capacity of 17.5m³, the B30E has a rated payload of 28,000kg, which makes it the biggest brother in the Bell E Series family of four. The drive and transmission systems of the brand are well established and research and development has been focused on operator comfort and driving assistance technology. With this in mind, the forward end of the E Series features a semi-independent, leading A-frame supported by hydro/ pneumatic, nitrogen/oil suspension struts. This greatly reduces the sharp jarring common in other ADTs.The rear end has been kept a bit simpler, with pivoting walking beams and laminated rubber

suspension blocks helping maintain that rear end strength and integrity.

Drive train For pushing the B30E along, the Bell has a Mercedes Benz OM926 LA engine providing 322hp (240kW) of power through an Allison 3500PR ORS sixspeed electronic transmission. Helping get that power to the ground is all Bell’s responsibility, with a Bell GR 10,000 transfer box and Bell 18T axles.

Braking system Keeping the fully-laden ADT under control on steep descents is an automatic exhaust brake, engine valve brake, and a variable adjustable hydraulic retarder incorporated in the transmission, making service brake applications minimal. The braking system features dry disc brakes, with eight callipers — four in the front, two in the middle, and two at the rear.

The cab Air-conditioned for comfort and ROPS/ FOPS compliant, the cab is packed with features, like a fully-adjustable airsuspension operator’s seat and a full-length glass driver’s door, giving visibility right to the ground on the left-hand side of the cab. The bulk of the controls are situated in a sealed-switch module unit, which sits

Cleverly, the weighing system can be set to sound the horn when the maximum payload is reached. off to the right of the steering wheel.A nifty grab handle sits alongside the module unit and helps keep the driver steady. Getting information across to the operator is done via an electronic 10-inch full-colour screen dash. It also converts to a full-display monitor when the reversing camera is activated. Capable of a number of other things, the electronic dash also shows the pitch and roll sensor display, on-board weighing system, and maximum speed control to prevent speeding on site. Cleverly, the weighing system can be set to sound the horn when the maximum payload is reached. On the cab exterior, a simple but very effective design change comes in the form of the mirror arms that now allow the operator to walk under them (instead of around them) to get to the engine cover.

Summary Everyone who trialled the machine at the demo was very pleased with how the Bell performed. The new B30E ADT is quiet, comfortable, has great visibility, performs well, and has features that would surely help the owner of such a rig to secure quality staff. drian Havard has no regrets about buying his first John Deere forestry log loader from CablePrice. The Northland logging contractor recently took possession of a new purpose-built John Deere 2154D-series log loader, which is being put through its paces in the Whangapoa Forest by his father Mike’s firm, Havard Logging. The loader replaces Adrian’s old Hitachi ZX270-3, which had delivered over 15,000 hours of loyal work. “I originally looked at the Hitachi ZX280LC-5 to replace it but there were 26

none available at the time. Our rep, Malcolm Pascoe, suggested we consider a John Deere log loader instead. We’d never tried the brand before but had heard some good reports from other guys using them around the country. When Malcolm offered us a free demo for a couple of weeks, we decided to go for it.” Adrian says the 2154D “ticked all the boxes”, in terms of lifting capacity, smooth operation, vision, power, and reach, during the demo, and after a few months with it operating on site, he couldn’t be happier. “We took possession of the 2154D late last year and it’s done 1700 hours already. The fuel economy is excellent and we

can’t fault the reliability of the engine. Our operator took a few days to adjust to the purpose-built boom but, once he did, the advantages in reach and power became very clear.” Adrian manages Havard Logging Team’s two logging crews at Whitianga, and owns three machines of his own that he contracts back to the company — two Hitachis, and the new John Deere 2154D, which he says goes “flat out” for around 11 hours a day. “It’s a no-nonsense, old-school type machine without all the flash computer gadgetry, but it has loads of power, is really reliable, and comfortable to operate.

The cab is up higher than our old machine, which gives us greater visibility.” Versatility is at the heart of the new D-Series forestry swing machines, which can be used as log loaders or shovel loaders, road builders, processor/harvesters, or stroke delimber carriers. Adrian started in the family logging business in 1983 at the age of 16. His father, Mike, has been in the forestry industry since the 1960s and set up the company in the early 1970s, which now has three operations in Masterton,Whitianga, and Whangarei. Havard Logging continues to be a big user of Hitachi gear from CablePrice, but recently took delivery of its first John Deere levelling harvester — the JD 909KH — which is being operated by the firm’s Masterton crew in JNL’s Ngamu Forest. Gavin Wilson, operations manager of the Masterton branch, says the harvester is a “pretty handy tool to have in our toolbox”. “The harvester gets our guys out of the bush, so it’s a big step forward in health and safety. In the future we’re looking to eliminate the high hazard areas of logging for manual handling, and this machine certainly does that.” Production is also enhanced, with the machine’s ability to harvest in all weathers. The durable, rugged JD 909KH is equipped with a Satco 630 felling head and is currently splitting tasks between felling and shovel logging. “Through the summer it does ground-based work, and because of its track power it will be a handy machine in wet winter conditions.” Gavin says operator Joe Tozer “came straight off an excavator” and had never driven a levelling harvester before, but quickly mastered it. He says operator comfort in the harvester’s high-spec cab is one of its big advantages. “The self-levelling cab reduces noise and vibration and keeps the operator working on an even level all day, even when the machine is on uneven ground. This definitely reduces fatigue.” The lumbar supported seat is easily adjustable and there is plenty of leg room in the cab. A sealed switch module gives the operator fingertip control of the harvester’s features and functions, with a multifunction LCD colour monitor revealing a wealth of information and on-board diagnostics at the push of a button. “It is a highly-computerised machine but is simple to work with. If we have any little issues we phone up Tony Scharvi at CablePrice. He’s a box of knowledge and his aftersales service has been pretty awesome,” says Gavin.“We also have monthly meetings with Deon Stephens, who comes to site to kick around new ideas and see if there is anything both companies could do better.” Servicing is carried out at either CablePrice’s Wellington or Palmerston North service centres, where there are some “top mechanics”. Overall, Gavin says the JD 909KH is a “good all round tool” that is fuel efficient, mechanic friendly, and complements the other machines in Havard’s fleet. In addition to the harvester, Havard Logging has recently purchased several pieces of new Hitachi equipment from CablePrice, including a ZX350LCH-5 grapple log loader and a ZX350LC-5 excavator fitted with a Bigwood Waratah processing head. CablePrice sales rep Malcolm Pascoe has dealt with Havard Logging for at least 25 of the 40 years he has been with the company, and says Mike has been a “very loyal” client. “We have a good relationship built on honesty and integrity over many years. I enjoy working with the Havard Logging team.”

Malcolm says the specialist equipment required by the forestry sector makes it one of the hardest to service. “It can take three or four months to get a new machine spec’d up to our client’s requirements, and if there is a breakdown it’s not that easy to find a replacement machine. That’s why quality of the machines we sell, and providing good backup to our customers is so important.” Adrian has no complaints about the service provided by CablePrice. “For me, it’s all about reliability of the machines and the backup support we receive. We rely on the machines to perform, but if we do have a problem we need to be able to ring someone up and have them turn up straight away. CablePrice delivers on both counts.”

T

he first thing Doug Taylor of DWT Haulage does when he gets up in the morning is pop on the coffee machine. Nothing unusual about that — apart from the fact that four or five mornings a week he wakes up in the cab of his new Scania R730 LA8X4MSA Topline truck, rather than his own bed. “By the time I get dressed, I’ve got a freshly brewed coffee waiting for me.There are no dozy starts to the morning in the truck these days,” he says.

28

CablePrice

When Doug ordered the new truck through Craig Pepperell at CablePrice,Wellington, last year, the coffee machine wasn’t the only special item on his wishlist. After almost 30 years in the industry, with many of these spent driving trucks throughout the UK and Europe, Doug, a Scotsman, was already very familiar with the Scania brand, and says there were “quite a few” features available in Europe that he wanted here. “I specifically wanted a night heater, to keep the cab warm in the winter when I’m sleeping, and an air conditioning unit on the

roof of the truck to regulate the temperature when I’m working. It also allows me to sleep comfortably on hot nights without having to wind down the windows.” The night heater is fully programmable, meaning Doug never has to get into a freezing cab at the beginning of a journey from his base at Rolleston, on the outskirts of Christchurch. “If I have a 4am start, I can programme the night heater to come on at 3.30am.That way I’m hopping into a warm truck with the windows defrosted and ready to go.” Both the night heater and air conditioning unit were factory optioned, but assembled and fitted on the truck’s arrival in New Zealand last August. Inside, the cab has been fully re-trimmed in leather, including leather seats. It also has a mahogany steering wheel and stateof-the-art GPS navigation, phone, and radio system.“It’s a bit like driving a top-of-the-range European car,” he says. Other special features include an on-board fridge/freezer and microwave to ensure Doug doesn’t miss out on home-cooked meals, courtesy of his partner, Karon Sanctuary, who is a chef. The truck is also fitted with a double bunk with extending bottom bed, providing Doug with a restful night’s sleep and can accommodate Karon when she has time to join him on the road. The couple came to New Zealand from the UK a decade ago and started their own general haulage company, DWT Haulage, in Christchurch in 2009. The firm is contracted to NZL and carries a wide range of freight, such as irrigation pipes, concrete pipes, steel, timber, hay, straw, and wool, right throughout New Zealand. “I usually go to the North Island at least once a week, or sometimes twice if it’s only as far as Palmerston North or Wanganui,” says Doug. Given the long hours spent in the truck, he says the luxuries in the highly-spec’d vehicle are“a wee bit of reward”for his hard work. He says Transmech in Auckland did an “outstanding” job of outfitting the truck, which included fabricating and fitting

custom chrome seven-inch smoke stacks, and putting in extra lighting that “looks great” when the truck is sitting in the dark at night. The on-road performance of the Scania R730, with V8 engine and Opticruise automatic gearbox, has more than matched its good looks, he adds. “The truck has really exceeded my expectations. My previous truck (not a Scania) went very well but the Scania surpasses its performance without even struggling. It has loads of power — more power than you can use.” Given its grunt, Doug has been surprised at the truck’s fuel efficiency. It is achieving around 2.19 kilometres per litre, well ahead of the 1.8 kilometres per litre of his previous truck. He says the cost savings from the improved fuel consumption “more than pays for” the AdBlue urea solution, injected into the truck’s exhaust gases before they enter the atmosphere. Doug had his first dealings with CablePrice when he worked for another South Island-based transport firm, and liaised closely with Craig Pepperell and the Wellington CablePrice team throughout the purchase of his new truck. “Craig and the rest of the CablePrice guys are spot on and very easy to deal with. After having his own trucks a few years ago, Craig is very knowledgeable and nothing is a problem.” Doug says as an owner-operator, CablePrice’s extensive support and service network gives him peace of mind. “I only have one truck, which is my only means of income, and I don’t have a set route so I could be anywhere in the country on any given day. It’s nice to know I have that level of backup behind me, and if there is a problem, the CablePrice team will do everything they can to keep me on the road.”

WORKING TO

H

e might have only established Flowright Services Ltd last year, but Wellington owner/ operator Tarnn Cantell considers himself a Hitachi man through and through. The leap into business ownership has already proved a positive move, with Tarnn admitting to being “absolutely flat out” working on all manner of urban projects, from driveway and drainage work to retaining wall construction and landscaping. “I’ve actually been driving Hitachi excavators for about 15 years now, so when I bought my Zaxis 55 it was all very familiar to me, considering the work started coming in regularly right from the off, that familiarity and the reliability of the Zaxis gave me peace of mind.” Along with the ZX55U-5,Tarnn also specified a CablePricesourced tilt bucket and half hitch and was quick to choose rubber tracks for his machine, what with the nature of much of his work leading him across freshly-laid driveway concrete, such as at the Endeavour Drive subdivision project in the Wellington suburb of Whitby, where he’s currently working. While the Zaxis 55 sits firmly within Hitachi’s comprehensive mini excavator range, its 28.2kW (37.8hp) power unit ensures it packs the sort of punch you’d expect from a bigger machine. That provides the ideal sweet spot for Tarnn, though, who wouldn’t have considered anything bigger. “The small tail-swing radius is perfectly suited for the sort of work I do. I’m generally in confined environments — on berms at the roadside, in against steep slopes working on retaining walls, or around the back of houses where you need to be very careful about your movements. “The Zaxis 55’s dimensions suit this sort of work perfectly. I have a small machine that still has plenty of grunt, and with a cabin that’s nicely thought-out and gives me enough room to work comfortably for hours at a time. It’s the complete package really.”

30

CablePrice

For this busy owner/operator, Hitachi’s nimble, user-friendly, and fuel-efficient compact excavator range has already proven worth its weight in subdivision soil. The compact, nimble nature of the ZX55U-5 also means it’s easy to transport, although Flowright Services entrusts machine movements to a local transport firm, which shifts Tarnn’s 5470mm long, 2000mm wide (at the undercarriage) Zaxis from project to project via truck on his behalf. “Hiring a third party to shift the excavator works well for me,” says Tarnn.“Right now I’d rather buy a second digger than spend money on a truck.” Ask Tarnn about running costs and he’s certain the ZX55U-5 is giving as good as it gets, considering he admits it has been worked hard. “I’ve completed around 100 hours on the machine so far and I’ve been really impressed with its fuel efficiency. The new Zaxis machines come with an ECO mode, which you can use to help conserve your fuel burn depending on what tasks you’re undertaking, but even just through normal usage I can see this is an economical wee machine,” he says. So, buying the ZX55U-5 was a no-brainer for Tarnn, who also mentions the ease with which the purchase process occurred — local distributor CablePrice stayed in touch and landed Flowright Services’ inaugural machine as swiftly as possible. With the Zaxis 55’s 250-hour service due, the CablePrice tech team will be out to check everything over again soon. “In my experience, Hitachi excavators run just as smoothly and swiftly when they’re getting on a bit as they do when they’re new. I’ve worked for several operators over the years and have had the chance to utilise various different brands, but Hitachi has always achieved a consistency to its performance that I really appreciate. “I’d like to think that when I expand further, it’ll be another Zaxis excavator joining my fleet.”

Experience COUNTS

F

irst-time Hitachi owner Duane Whiting, of Duane Whiting Contractors Ltd, has more than 25 years of experience operating a contracting business in Nelson. This vast experience means he knows just what works and what doesn’t when it comes to his business. Duane and his crew do a range of different contracting jobs around the Nelson region, anything from general contracting, new commercial and residential subdivisions and site preparation, right through to demolition work. In some ways, Nelson is no different to so many other regions in New Zealand. With business confidence on the up, the flow-on effect for Duane is plenty of work.To help manage this workload, Duane recently purchased one of the latest Hitachi compact excavators, a Zaxis ZX55U-5. Duane says his dad was a contractor in Nelson for 30-odd years, owning and operating a number of different excavators, including Hitachi.“I spent many an hour driving Hitachi excavators when I was growing up,” says Duane. Since being in business for himself, Duane has always looked at what other machines are on the market.“I recently had the opportunity of a demonstration of one of the new Zaxis

excavators and this convinced me that it’s time to add Hitachi to my fleet. The Hitachi’s a good machine with a well-designed operator layout, easy-to-read monitor, proven reliability, and it looks good, too,” he says. It’s the small changes that can make the big differences, like the 80mm increased door width, a lower entry footstep and enlarged front windscreen — all carefully designed with operator comfort and productivity in mind. Also, for peace-of-mind safety, the cab comes standard with ROPS, seatbelt, and pilot control shut-off lever. Daily maintenance inspections are a breeze as all external covers open wide for direct access to service points. Given the diverse range of contracts Duane has planned for the Zaxis, he spec’d the excavator with a cabin for better year-round use, along with a quick-hitch coupler and a good assortment of buckets, including a narrow and tilt bucket. Duane says,“Communication with equipment sales specialist, Todd Blackwood of CablePrice Nelson, has been great and nothing seemed to be a problem — even when the odd issue did arise,Todd kept me in the loop throughout the entire process. As for the machine itself, what can I say? The team likes it so it’s got to be good!”

Chip off the OLD BLOCK Cowley’s Hire has seen it all over the past 63 years, from its early beginnings at Springs Flat in Whangarei.

W

ayne Cowley’s dad,Ted, was a carpenter and for his convenience he would tow his caravan to site when working out on farms in the district. Then one year, someone asked if they could hire his caravan for a while and before he knew it,Ted had invested in 30-odd caravans to hire out. As Wayne recalls, during his childhood he was given the job of cleaning the ceilings of the caravans before the Christmas hire season — a job that was made even harder thanks to the black smoke produced from the old Tilley lanterns. These lanterns were used instead of electricity to light the caravans. From these early beginnings his dad moved into other regions in the district and started hiring out everything from his own wheelbarrows to his chippy tools. As a result of plenty of hard work and dedication, Cowley’s Hire is now in its 63rd year of operation and is today owned by Ted’s son Wayne and wife Bev.The business has expanded since those early years and currently operates from five Northland locations (Kamo, Ruakaka, Bay of Islands, and two in Whangarei). It is very much a family business,Wayne’s wife Bev and daughter Lucretia ensure all the ‘back office’ duties are in order.Wayne’s son Trent runs the party hire division and nephew George is working in the commercial and industrial hire division in Whangarei. Cowley’s Hire prides itself on being a local family business with a long proud history in the Northland region and regularly supports a number of local events. According to Wayne, Cowley’s Hire has possibly one of New Zealand’s biggest selections of hire equipment from a simple ‘G’ clamp to the latest Hitachi excavator — it has it all.“While most people think of hiring products as short term, say a couple-ofdays type of thing, it is actually quite common to do a medium- to long-term hire or even a two- to three-year-plus in some cases.”

32

CablePrice

Not everyone needs a new excavator for a particular job, nor is every operator in a position to buy a new unit. Maybe the contractor needs something a little bigger or smaller than the one they own, or maybe it is an additional requirement for that extra contract they have just picked up. It is times like these that companies, owners and contractors look to Cowley’s Hire for that extra excavator. With the recent upturn in business in the Northland region, the demand for hire excavators continues to increase, so much so that last year Wayne said he needed to look at increasing his excavator hire fleet to meet this demand. Previously having had Hitachi excavators in his hire fleet and having had such an exceptional run out of them, according to Wayne, the decision was easy to make — Hitachi it was. Last year Wayne purchased four new Hitachi mini excavators — two ZX60USB-3Fs and two ZX38U-5s, followed this year by a couple of larger excavators — one a ZX75US-5 and the other a ZX85USB-5.

Wayne says his customers really like the new Hitachi excavators. They lend themselves really well to a mix of different job sites.Anything from trenching work for cables and drainage, to new building site work. Exactly the type of work his customers are demanding quality equipment for. Combine this with the standard Hitachi features, like the compact zero tail-swing design, renowned operator friendly controls layout, and the abundance of power results in these Hitachi excavators continually being in hot demand. Wayne is impressed with the relationship his company has with CablePrice equipment sales specialist Phil McKenzie and the team at Whangarei branch.Wayne appreciates having a company like CablePrice backing him, as it really helps — especially when he knows the product is going to be robust, reliable, and increase productivity for his customers, thus leaving Cowley’s Hire to successfully concentrate on the very competitive hire business.

ON TO A GOOD THING

W

ith work taking him all over the Nelson,Tasman, and Marlborough regions and taking the form of anything from drainlaying, wastewater, water reticulation, sub-divisional work, and even general truck and excavator hire, Kyle Whiting depends on solid, reliable gear. “Simply put, Hitachi builds a good functional digger,” he says.“The hydraulics work really well on them, you’ve got all your movements in one time and you can offset the boom on it while you’re tracking along, or while you’re slewing the cab.” Kyle is no stranger to diggers either, having been around them most of his life. He still remembers driving his Dad’s Hitachi UH03.1 as a kid. “I’ve driven pretty much every make of excavator on the market, but I really like the Hitachi,” he says. “When I started looking for a new excavator, I went up to THE EXPO in Hamilton at the beginning of the year. I looked at everything on the market and finally narrowed it down to just two — Hitachi and another brand. But I went back to Hitachi in the end — they’re just really good efficient diggers with proven reliability, good lifting, and good digging power.” Kyle’s previous excavator was a canopy type, but the ZX38U-5 he opted for this time is spec’d with a spacious cab offering excellent visibility, an ergonomically-

designed console, and improved operator comfort. Kyle says he’s so at home in the Zaxis’ cab, he’d never go back to a canopy type now. The ZX38U-5 boasts just the right mix of power and economy, thanks to its 21.2kW (28.4hp) engine. It’s a wellbalanced excavator, too — 1740mm wide and 4700mm in length, with an operating weight of 3710kg — making for an excellent all-round digger and one that fits neatly on the company’s seven-tonne tipper. Kyle says it’s easy to load as well. “We use the ZX38U-5 in a number of applications, so it was important to have an excavator that’s well suited to a range of attachments. “We use anything from a 250mm trenching, to 450mm digging, 600mm digging, or 1200mm wide tilt bucket and a mole plough that I use for ploughing

Kyle Whiting Drainlaying Ltd has taken delivery of a new Hitachi Zaxis ZX38U-5. It’s the Nelson-based company’s third Hitachi excavator and there’s a simple reason why they stick with the brand. in irrigation pipes with. Changing from bucket to bucket is a breeze thanks to the adjustable JB quick-hitch.” Kyle was also pleased with the purchase process, which he describes as straightforward and simple. “Todd Blackwood and his team at CablePrice’s Nelson branch are very good to deal with and certainly know their stuff.” So overall it seems that simplicity is the key.And as far as Kyle’s assessment of Hitachi’s new ZX38U-5 goes, that’s similarly straightforward. “Hitachi is a great make of diggers. I wouldn’t own one if they weren’t.”

There are plenty of benefits to running a uniform fleet, says ag haulage firm owner Graeme Reisima, who owns a fleet of Isuzus.

COMMON CAUSE

W

ith their fifth Isuzu truck purchased last December, it’s fair to say Reisima Haulage’s Graeme and Frances Reisima put a lot of faith in both the brand and its local back-up support. Their recently purchased 8x4 GIGA joins a fleet that includes other CXZ and CXH models, all of which the Masterton-headquartered firm has configured as flat-deck tippers. “Essentially our business is the ag business,” Graeme tells me. “We specialise in ag-related freight, so we’ll carry a lot of wool, fertiliser, silage, hay, grain — anything that keeps the local farmers moving and producing.” Since acquiring its first Isuzu — a second-hand CXZ 370 — back in 2003, Reisima Haulage hasn’t looked back, growing its fleet when needs must, but lately making a conscious decision to stick with one brand. “The uniformity of the fleet simplifies everything. It means we have a more comprehensive back-up service, we have a better benchmark for our running costs across the fleet, our drivers are all familiar with the gear, and I suppose at the end of the day, from a branding point-of-view, it looks good to have recognisable trucks on the road too.” Graeme says he likes the way Isuzu trucks “just get on with the job”, citing the new GIGA as a comfortable, powerful, and spacious addition to the Reisima Haulage lineup.

34

CablePrice

Along with redesigned cab layouts, the latest GIGA heavy haulage series — with power in the 8x4 models ranging between 294kW (400hp) and 390kw (530hp) and 29,000kg to 30,000kg GVM depending on manual or 16-speed ATM automated manual gearbox specification — features upgraded Isuzu turbo diesel engines with a new advanced overhead camshaft design. This boosts power and torque in equal measure, while keeping both carbon emissions and fuel economy in check. “We’ve never had any major warranty issues on the trucks,” he says.“Our first service is always through CablePrice and then we have a mechanic continue to service them from there on. Our feedback from the mechanic is that Isuzu trucks are generally very simple to work on too. “But it also comes down to numbers. Isuzu is a popular brand in New Zealand and across the model line there’s a good commonality of parts, so I can’t say we’d ever find ourselves having to wait for a part in an emergency situation.” CablePrice is the authorised master truck dealer for Isuzu in the Wellington region and part of a national service network that covers rigs on the road right across New Zealand. For Graeme, having the firepower of CablePrice behind the brand gives him further peace of mind. “It’s good to have a big company standing behind a big brand in my neck of the woods. We do mainly local runs and probably cover around 50,000km a year in the trucks. It’s good to know that wherever we are though, that back-up support isn’t far away.”

TRACK & WHEEL

ALL THE BASES Whether the order of the day is inner-city deliveries or long-distance runs around the lower North Island, this Wellington-based operator knows his small but versatile fleet of Isuzu trucks has everything covered.

A

busy mix of long distance and urban running means Lawrence Hailwood looks to his three Isuzu trucks to cover a multitude of bases every day of the week. Lawrence’s Wellington-based company contracts to both Roadstar and CourierPost, handling metro deliveries for the former and nightly mail runs to Palmerston North for the latter.Additionally, his newly-purchased FSD650 also makes weekly runs to Napier, delivering the Sunday paper to Hawke’s Bay. A combination of freight requires a combination of firepower — the FSD650 is the company’s third Isuzu purchase since 2009 and joins a two-axle FTR750L and a bigger FSD1400 six-wheeler already on the fleet. Among other creature comforts the FSD650 features — such as air suspension and a spacious, well-appointed cab layout — Lawrence says the six-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) is a revelation. “This is the first truck we’ve bought with an auto ’box and I have to say I’m a convert. It’s a smooth gearbox and is as nice to use around town as it is on the open road. “I wondered about the fuel efficiency of an automatic before I bought one, but I’ve been very impressed. After the FSD650 returned from a recent trip to Napier — which is a roundtrip of about 640km from here — it still had a quarter of a tank of diesel left. That’s pretty good going in my books.”

“The reason we’ve bought a third Isuzu is that they’re just so reliable. Isuzu makes straightforward trucks, but they always boast plenty of power and comfort for the driver. “I think the support from CablePrice is equally reliable too though, which is really important for a smaller company like mine. They service all three trucks and provide good back-up for us.We can’t afford to have any of our vehicles off the road, but it’s good to know that if something were to happen, there’s a team at the other end of the phone that has the ability to sort out the problem in a hurry without any headaches.” To cope with some of the unique environments associated with inner-city running, Lawrence chose the FSD650 to deal with high kerbs and tight city access ways, so if you think Lawrence’s next move might be to opt for an even larger Isuzu for his busy fleet, think again.Turns out he’s after something smaller. “We’re looking at adding a fourth Isuzu to the fleet, which will be a smaller model than the 12-tonne FSD650.As you might imagine, some of the hillier Wellington suburbs require a vehicle with a good mix of excellent manoeuvrability and plenty of power. “We’re contracted to deliver Ready Lawn instant turf around Wellington, so we need something that can get into residential streets easily, but still has the necessary grunt to shift a heavy product into some pretty steep areas. I’m looking to Isuzu to provide something that’ll fit the bill and I’m pretty confident the brand will deliver.”

John Deere’s JH and KH-Series of purpose-built, cut-to-length harvesters help operators to manage their forest with every cut. Built on a long history of harvester evolution, John Deere’s tracked and wheeled harvesters are all about making technology pay off for logging contractors. These machines have no unnecessary gimmicks, just hard-working, practical, highefficiency systems that make the operator’s job easier, adding to the margin of difference that can help businesses grow.
