he Coco is known through out Northern New Mexico. The Coco is the name of the bogeyman that is used to scare to children when they disobey their parents. Whether they don’t want to go to bed, not eat or go somewhere they shouldn’t, the Coco will get them. Every child imagines the Coco different. Parents warn children if they misbehave the Coco will come and get them. So the next time a child is starting to misbehave, he or she better watch out or the Coco will get them.

Hello... oh no!
one day I was sitting in the kitchen when my mom answered the phone. She told me that my grandma passed away. It was very sad. I went outside and sat on the front steps. I started to cry when a black cat jumped on my lap.
15
I looked at the cat and it smiled at me. It had the patch of grey fur on the top of the cat’s head. I stopped crying
16
The cat jumped off my lap and walked away!

Mal de Ojo(Evil Eye) Mal de ojo is a folklore that is widely believed in hispanic and latin culture. This “hex” is associated with infants. The mal de ojo is a gazed or a dirty look given to a baby that causes “illness”. Symptoms are high fever, not sleeping well, fussiness and crying. Supposedly if someone looks at an infant with envy or admiration, this is how Mal de Ojo is transferred. Sometimes the look is given and sometimes not intentionally. Babies are given either a St. Benedict medal to help defend against Mal de Ojo. Also a piece of coral in form of jewelry is pinned somewhere on the baby’s crib or bassinet. If the evil eye is given to adults, one remedy is to see a curandera. The curandera says a prayer, rolls an egg over the body, cracks the egg into a glass and sets the glass under the bed of the victim. Another remedy is you need to find someone named “John” to give water to who ever has the evil eye.”John” is for Saint John the Baptist.
