Golfing guide for the Province of Cadiz
2
Art in the countryside The province of Cadiz is located in southern Europe, right where the Old Continent meets Africa. The two continents are barely separated by the Strait of Gibraltar. Thanks to this privileged geographical location, Cadiz currently has one of the best tourist offerings in Spain. Cadiz has always boasted an extensive range of art. Flamenco art, art in the kitchen, in its culture and for several years now even on the greens. Severiano Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomerie, Olazábal, Sergio García... the best players have left indelible memories on these courses in the south of Andalusia. Some left them by lifting the Ryder Cup at Valderrama, others in the Volvo Masters at Montecastillo. Some, like R. Trent Jones and Jack Nicklaus, left them by stamping their signature and design on the courses. The best thing about the province of Cadiz is that you always have a choice. Holing the ball with a view of the Mediterranean or the Atlantic, daring to play a links course, enjoying the fast greens or testing yourself among the lakes and bunkers. There are twenty courses in total, and these days thousands of golfers come to the province of Cadiz to play where the best golfers play and where environmental management is a priority. It is a sustainable destination as more than 30% of its territory is protected.
3
F
or 3,000 years now, there have always been so many reasons to come to Cadiz. And golf is indeed one of them, although there are plenty of others. For example, getting to know the bodegas of Jerez and ending up like Lord Byron, when he wrote: “Oh Cadiz, sweet Cadiz!... the first spot in the creation.” Whichever way you look at it, this province has so much to see: fashion in Tarifa, the charm of the historic town centres, the urban planning and architecture of the Arabs in Medina Sidonia, Vejer, Castellar and Jimena de la Frontera, with their histories filled with battlements, castles, landscapes, craftsmen and walls. Cadiz is a place to be seen, and above all to be enjoyed. As in golf, this province always gives more: spectacular beaches, the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park at its highest reaches (Biosphere Reserve) and to the south the experience of watching dolphins and whales in the Strait of Gibraltar. In the north is the route of the Pueblos Blancos (White Villages), while via Sanlúcar de Barrameda we find the entrance to the Doñana National Park and in Jerez a land where even the horses dance. So, if you come, don’t miss a visit to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and the Yeguada de la Cartuja stud farm. In Sotogrande, Costa Ballena and Sancti Petri, there is luxury right within reach; along the Strait of Gibraltar and in the Bay of Cadiz, it is a paradise for birds, while in the heart of the province, we find the Alcornocales Natural Park, the primaeval forest, the bestpreserved forest in the Iberian Peninsula.
4
Cadiz has always been a highly picturesque province: a land for bohemians in search of colonial airs, kings in five-star palaces, homesick Latin Americans, treasure hunters, bikers, Indiana Jones, Formula 1 racers, Robin Hoods and foodies alike. If you are looking for something that goes even further, come to Cadiz, take a swing at the ball and just enjoy yourself.

In 2005 the Old Course hosted the Spanish Open, which was eventually won by Peter Hanson after a tense tie-break with fellow Swede Peter Gustafsson. This Open returned to San Roque in 2006, when it was played on the New Course, with the winner on this occasion being Niclas Fasth.
In 2003, San Roque opened another 18 holes and this gave rise to the New Course, a course designed by Perry Dye and Severiano Ballesteros. It offers a perfect contrast to the Old Course because of the extreme difference in their designs, but with the same challenges.
