publisher’s LETTER
I
NSPIRATION: The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something. This was the word of my month. Never before have I felt so inspired by the women around me. At the Cairns Business Women's Club lunch I was bought to my feet along with the entire room as the inspiring Kristy Valley opened her heart and motivated us. Thank you Kristy for sharing your journey, you inspired me to dedicate this CLM (CairnsLife Magazine) cover story to my best friend and inspirational Tammy Barker. Tammy is a born and bred local identity that works tirelessly marketing Cairns. You will always see Tammy talking, posting and hash tagging our beautiful city Cairns. Such a great ambassador for TNQ. You will normally see Tammy running around in Lorna Jane and sneakers but this shoot we got the make-up and heels out and talked to Tammy about her journey. Whatever inspires you to better and create get out and do it, take that trip, meditate, enjoy. As they say "when you are laying in that hospital bed it is not the car you can go sit in, the large bank account statement to view, the hours you spent working, but the memories you make that will put the smile on your face". Happy August. Jacqui Nolan

IRON WOMAN COVER STORY
By Michelle Dryburgh
f
ROM A STUNT DOUBLE ON XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS TO ONE OF THE LEADING LADIES BEHIND THE SCENES OF IRONMAN CAIRNS – TAMMY BARKER HAS LIVED A LIFE OF ADVENTURE. THIS CAIRNS WONDER WOMAN HAS BEEN CHASING EXCITEMENT, DANGER AND FUN FOR AS LONG AS SHE CAN REMEMBER. IT WAS THAT HUNT THAT LED HER AWAY FROM THE FAR NORTH, FORGING A CAREER AS AN ACTOR AND STUNT WOMAN AS SHE TRAVELLED THE WORLD. BUT AFTER 13 YEARS AWAY, TAMMY IS BACK – AND SHE’S PROUD TO CALL CAIRNS HOME…

COVER STORY continued...
“INSTEAD OF BEING AN OUT OF WORK ACTOR WORKING AS A WAITRESS, I WAS A STUNT WOMAN BEING SET ON FIRE, DRAGGED BY HORSES AND FIGHTING WARRIORS WHILE WEARING POSSUM FUR,” Growing up in Cairns, Tammy and her brother spent their childhood enjoying the great outdoors - camping, rafting down creeks, swimming in water holes and fishing. When she wasn’t getting her hands dirty – she was at dance class, which she loved equally. Tammy’s love of performing grew with her. She wanted to be an actor, and that meant leaving Cairns. In 1995 she arrived on the Gold Coast, where the film industry was just beginning to thrive. Working as an entertainer at Sea World soon led to television roles and a qualification as a professional stunt woman. Two years later she was living in New Zealand and working as a stunt double on several American TV programs, including Xena Warrior Princess as the double for Gabrielle. “Instead of being an out of work actor working as a waitress, I was a stunt woman being set on fire, dragged by horses and fighting warriors while wearing possum fur,” she laughs. After three years as Xena’s brave sidekick, Tammy worked her way

across the globe for another eight years – living in Sydney, Japan, Canada and even travelling the world for 12 months. 2007 she was in Cairns waiting for her Canadian business visa when she auditioned for a fill-in radio spot on local radio. “I got the job, began working and when I was offered a full-time breakfast radio role for 2008, I decided to stay,” she says. “At that stage, Cairns had really developed. There were a lot more opportunities than there had been when I left in 94. It seemed right to stick around, plus it was wonderful to be back with family and friends.” In 2010, Tammy was offered a role with IRONMAN. She remains there today as both the Pro Athlete Liaison and Community Relations Manager. Her roles involve coordinating schedules of professional athletes and everything from communications and promotions to traffic management for 15 IRONMAN events across the Asia Pacific region. “I love events and I love race day energy, it’s very addictive and inspiring,” Tammy says. “The finish line experience is epic. Each person

crossing that line has their own story and reason for doing it. One of many was meeting a Japanese father and his 17-year-old son who were both in this year’s 70.3 Cairns (Half IRONMAN). The son has Down Syndrome, but that hasn’t stopped him from competing in our events all around the world, proving anything is possible. He was a little champion.” Planning for the 2015 festival will soon be underway, but Tammy is keeping busy renovating her house and enjoying everything she loves about living in Cairns, hiking, camping and weekend trips to Rusty’s to find fresh ingredients for dinner parties with friends. “What I love about Cairns is I have close friends here whose parents grew up with my parents,” Tammy smiles. “Then there’s its natural beauty, the abundance of free activities and the people who have built this town. In one weekend you can buy fresh produce from markets, hike up Glacier Rock, swim under ancient waterfalls, visit the Great Barrier Reef and enjoy a gig at The Tanks. “There is something for everyone in Cairns. I am so proud to call Cairns my hometown.”

eing just three women out of a staff of 12 in a company that excels as one of the largest Cairnsbased IT business solutions firms with clients Australia wide, Renee, Jenny and Celine rely on their individual strengths, talents and efficiency in working together as a team. Renee’s role as Financial Controller and Business Development manager began when she joined the business with her husband Thomas in 2000. “I met Thomas while working with an accounting firm, so it was a natural progression for me to utilise my background in accounting and bookkeeping to help grow the business.” “This meant Thomas could focus on his role as primary engineer at the time, with my support in the administration and organisation of the company. “During the past 14 years I have continued to manage the business finances, ensuring profitability and investment in new business systems, which has helped significantly in achieving our goals to expand into broader markets. “It’s a real balancing act managing a business while raising a young family of four children - the youngest currently being just a few months old.” Over the past

seven years there has usually been a baby in the office and children’s schedules to facilitate requiring exceptional organisational skills.” “Jenny – our Office and Operations Manager, came on board seven years ago just after our first baby was born. We had grown to a staff of five. “Jenny has been instrumental in the success and growth of the business, dealing with most of our corporate and government clients which are spread throughout Queensland and as far as Thursday Island and PNG. “Jenny has the challenge of managing nine male engineers, quality control and ensuring jobs are attended to promptly.” “Celine - our Sales and Server Product Specialist, joined us three years ago as a trainee, and is an asset to the company having gained in-depth knowledge of servers, network equipment, computers, laptops and mobile technologies.” She has a talent for working with network engineers and vendors to create server and network solutions for clients. “This role is usually filled by what some call ‘geeky’ males, so Celine makes for an atypical product specialist.” “Our success in working together in our respected areas has a lot to do with adaptability and flexibility

on both a professional and personal basis,” says Renee. “We know our strengths and allow each other do what they do best first and foremost to achieve our common goal to provide the very best service consistently for our clients.” So, does Renee think women are better at organisation than men? “Definitely… YES,” says Renee laughing!
When were uniforms incorporated into your business? The business has always had uniforms for the men since its beginnings in 1994. It wasn’t until Jenny came to us that we decided the girls should also have uniforms. We have more choice. While the men wear a polo shirt or executive long sleeve shirt with our logo and black pants, the girls wear pants or skirts with a variety of five different shirts with the TJ Microsystems logo. What does wearing a uniform represent to you? It’s more professional/formal in providing a corporate image for our valued clients. Our uniforms also unify and define us as a team that enjoys working together.

et she admits it’s not always that easy to achieve – knowing how the rigors of everyday life can take their toll. “A lot of people desperately need physio, but don’t access it at all, or do so rarely,” says Julie. “They often have little time for themselves, which can make it difficult to fit in a physio appointment.” “Many of the physical problems I see in the clinic are due to neglect of a niggling pain that has since grown out of proportion and into a real problem.” “This may be a result of uncorrected postural issues, lack of exercise or stretching, poor strength, too long at the desk or stress.” “We all need empowerment to know spending time on ourselves for our health is ok! “Balance now after 30 years as a physio therapist is working with my patients two days per week, and spending a couple of days working on the business.” “I also try to exercise and relax daily”, adds Julie, who was also an aerobics instructor in late 1980s and early 1990s. She won the Australian Endurance Aerobics Championship in 1991; as well as competing in international Outrigger canoeing, completing the 67km Molokai Channel Open Ocean Race in Hawaii in 1997, and winning the Micronesia Cup in 2002 in Guam. “Age has slowed me a little in the sporting arena, but I have a beautiful kelpie cross cattle dog (Skye) that requires me to exercise every day.” “I also take time to care for my health, spend quality time with my husband and friends, and enjoy long holidays every year.” Leading by example is only part of the equation for Julie’s success in a profession she embraces with much joy and respect. “Not long ago, Mum showed me a composition I wrote when I was seven.” “Responding to ‘what do you want to do when you grow up’ I wrote: I want to help people as much as I can.” “It’s always been that way!” Julie’s desire to give patients the best possible result includes continuing education. She completed a manipulative Masters Degree in 2000 and recently became a senior level bounce back trainer. “Proactive’s aim is to stay at the forefront of evidencebased and technological changes in physiotherapy practise, continually providing our physios with tools to excel in the treatment of their patients,” says Julie.

What does wearing a uniform for your profession symbolise for you personally? “Uniforms have become a part of my work since I’ve employed more staff and worked with a larger team. They demonstrate we are a team. The logo on our uniform represents what we stand for - professional treatment for active health. Do you think women wearing uniforms across a broad spectrum of professions is important? “For some women, not having to think about what they put on every morning is an easy option. Others think a uniform doesn’t allow them enough self-expression. To wear a uniform you need to be proud of what it represents. We are all unique - a uniform doesn’t change that.”

LET CAIRNSLIFE MAKE YOU UP by
MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design
With Bridie’s Hair we needed to reconstruct and start afresh. Bridie had a mass of curls that were uncontrolled and a Deep Blackened effect through the hair from over colouring. So to start we evened all of the layering as the haircut was unbalanced, then we took a little length off to control and define the shape. Styling was a major key, to smoothing, treating and softening the hair. With a moisture treatment, heat protect and a beautiful soft Blowdry this Lovely Style was achieved.
Colour Specialist
We started by gently lightening Bridie’s hair as there was a Blackened effect that needed to go from over Colouring in the past. This uncovered a little warmth for us to begin the process for our desired colour. We injected a few Tangerine and Honey tones through the layering and balanced the base Colour with a Rich beautiful Chocolate. This has given shine, warmth and a glow to breathe life back into Bridie’s colour.
Make Up Artistry
To start we shaped, sculpted and tinted Bridie’s eyebrows to define the eyes and make them a stand out feature. With Bridie’s Make-up we wanted to keep it simple yet elegant with a pop of bright Tangerine colour on the lips. We evened and highlighted Bridie’s skin tone, then gently lifted the eyes with nude and pale peach shadows to brighten and highlight, also for extra definition a stronger eyeliner top and bottom, then a gentle peach tone of blush to finish.
TIP OF THE MONTH
Why not Treat yourself to an amazing new High Gloss Temptress Treatment. This will last up to 4 weeks and smooth, control and protect your hair against the harsh winter cold, and will add a high Gloss finish……… Must be seen to be believed……..

You Leak and … Incontinence is defined as the inability to control the bladder or bowel. It occurs for many reasons at many ages. Stress urinary incontinence occurs with sudden increases in abdominal pressure such as cough, laugh, sneeze, exercise or even during sex! Incontinence is more common in females than males and this is for obvious reasons. The sphincter muscle that controls the bladder is not as strong, the bladder may have a tendency to “drop down” and there may be damage to the pelvic floor in childbirth. Urge incontinence is when a person is unable to suppress the need to pass urine and there is leakage before getting to the toilet. Sometimes the whole bladder may empty. There can be many reasons for this. There can be infection present, sensitivity to caffeine or alcohol, some medications cause it, occasionally a small capacity bladder may develop, diabetes affects it and sometimes a person may have arthritis which prevents getting there quickly. Some people develop a combination of both urge and stress incontinence. The diagnosis of incontinence is usually made on the patient’s history (description) of how and when it occurs. A urine test is usually carried out and an ultrasound or X-ray may be required. It may be necessary to have a bladder examination (cystoscopy) carried out. It is disappointing to read, hear and see that in a number of media areas that the answer to this is to wear pads when many can be cured or significantly helped by correct treatment. Consuming approximately two litres of
water per day will assist with “flushing the system”. Maintaining a healthy body weight is important as the pressure of abdominal fat on a bladder will reduce its ability to fill and hold urine. Reducing caffeine containing drinks and alcohol may be helpful as well as maintaining a healthy, regular bowel habit. Pelvic floor exercises and timed toileting (holding on for a few minutes when the urge starts) can be assisted by physiotherapy. Sometimes medications may be prescribed to reduce the “irritability” of the bladder and finally, surgery may be required. That may take the form of a “repair” where the bladder is lifted back to the correct position and fixed in place or a “sling” is inserted at the bladder opening to create a “kink” to stop leakage with the cough or sneeze. Alternatively, a substance can be injected at the opening of the bladder rather like putting a new washer in a tap. This is like making a person’s lips larger in cosmetic application. This type of procedure is done as a day surgery case and there are no cuts made.
Incontinence • inability to control the bladder or bowel • more common in females than males • diagnosis of incontinence is usually made on the patient’s history (description) of how and when it occurs • Some people develop a combination of both urge and stress incontinence

Combining creative flair with outstanding organisational skills, Krystle Tokunai is recognised as much for her cutting edge hair salon as she is for her contribution to up-market fashion events in the region. Since establishing Tokunai Hair in 2008, this experienced hairdresser and savvy businesswoman has made a strong name for herself in the local industry. Now, together with her team of talented and creative professionals, the Tokunai name is destined to make its mark around the country.
day-to-day clients, she says the opportunity to become involved in the fashion industry has allowed them to take their talents to whole different level. “As creative people it’s really exciting to be involved in a fashion event where we have the freedom to go a bit crazy.” In addition to her involvement in a number of local fashion shows, Krystle also directed the 2013 Brisbane Mercedes Fashion Festival and has been invited to audition for the Sydney Fashion Festival this year. She also hopes to top the very successful 2013 Springsum Fashion Show, which she currently runs in partnership with Skrilled Magazine editor Chris Baker. “The opportunity to host Lara Bingle last year really helped put the spotlight on Cairns,” she says. And while nothing is yet confirmed for 2014, Krystle hints that a number of high profile celebrities have been approached.

After attending boarding school in Toowoomba and completing a hairdressing course in Brisbane, Krystle relocated to Cairns ten years ago. After deciding to leave the salon where she was working, she found herself at a crossroad in her career. “Starting the business was really just a spur of the moment decision,” she says. “At the time I had nowhere else to go, so my husband encouraged me to go out on my own,” she laughs. Now specialising in all areas of hair and makeup, Tokunai Hair is a Schwarzkopf Professional Salon that also offers clients a choice of Napoleon Perdis and Silk Mineral Cosmetics.

Yaya’s Hellenic Kitchen & Bar By Stacy Wong
Yaya is grandma in Greek. There’s nothing more comforting than a home-cooked meal made with loving and experienced hands of dear old grans.
Yaya’s Hellenic Kitchen & Bar is dedicated to bring the love and inspiration of grandma’s cooking and culinary traditions passed down from the ancient lands. Owners George and Helen Papagelou, and Kosta and Christine Venetis have extensive hospitality experience, going back as far as the early 80’s. George and Helen brought traditional Greek food to Cairns in the early 90’s when they opened the original George’s Greek Taverna in Aplin St. Now together with Kosta and Christine they opened Yaya’s Hellenic Kitchen & Bar to continue their passion for food and hospitality. Located atop the bustle of the Esplanade,(right above Villa Romana), Yaya’s Hellenic Kitchen and Bar offers traditional Greek fare at a reasonable price. Décor is simple and elegant, with sleek wooden furniture, and a cosy lounging area in the back corner. White walls and sweeping windows give an airy openness. The balcony offers spectacular views overlooking the Esplanade and Coral Sea, transporting us to the Greek isles in this charming seaside setting. With 30 years experience in hospitality in Greece and Melbourne, owner and Chef Kosta skilfully dishes up classic and fresh Mediterranean cuisine. Portions are generous, so sharing is encouraged. Greek culture reveres food as more than just sustenance; it’s about life, family, and social gathering.
Chef Kosta offers a plentiful feast with Yaya’s Sharing Banquet; an abundant array of menu courses at just $40 per person. Much like gran’s kitchen, there’s no leaving without a full stomach. Dishes come out in timely order with unfussed and modest presentation.
61
Tzatziki ($8) is deliciously tangy with balanced flavours of Greek yoghurt, garlic, cucumber and dill. It’s good with bread, but save some for an even better compliment to the calamari, chicken souvlaki, and chargrilled king prawns. Saganaki ($13) is a must try! Ditch the diet; this fried cheese sinful delight is too good to resist. Plump king prawns ($28) are beautifully grilled and succulent, retaining fresh oceanic flavour. Yaya’s specialty Arni Lemonato ($26) is a rich and comforting dish of slow baked lemon herbed lamb with tender oven baked potatoes. Greek salad ($14) is fresh with crisp cucumber, sweet vine-ripe tomatoes, tangy dressing, topped with generous slices of feta. The Drunken Watermelon cocktail ($15) is refreshing; I imagine sipping whilst basking in the warm Mediterranean sun. This cool concoction is made with crushed watermelon, rum, mint, and ouzo, a Greek favoured anise-flavoured liquor. The wine list is modest, offering wines by the glass ($6-9) and bottles ($22-48). The Knee Deep Semillon Sauvignon Blanc ($9/ glass, $45/bottle) was the perfect pairing to our Sharing Banquet feast. The depth of the wine complimented bold Mediterranean flavours. Yaya’s homemade desserts are irresistible. Galaktoboureko ($10) is delightful, custard-filled filo pastry drizzled with lovely Mareeba honey syrup. Baklava ($8) is a rich treat with layers of flaky filo pastry, with nut filling spiced with cinnamon, and bathed in sweet syrup. Address: Level 1/ 95 Esplanade, corner of Aplin St & Esplanade (above Villa Romana) Phone: (07) 4031 3033 Dinner: 7 nights from 5pm Lunch: Fridays from 12pm

C O F F E E ROA S T E R S Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters is oddly situated along the Captain Cook highway in Stratford, Cairns, three doors down from Jonssons Farm Market and next to Cairns Car Audio. This location, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, has its own charm as it doesn’t just serve amazing coffee, tea and food; Sipping Duck roast their own beans on site and invite everyone to watch the complex process every Tuesday. Owner operators, Fiorella and Erik, come from café and hospitality background and have a world of knowledge. They take an informative approach when dealing with their clients and love to help people from all walks of life, whether it be the rookie home barista all the way up to the hard-core coffee geek. As wholesalers, Sipping Duck believes in absolute freshness of their product and roast regularly in a small batch roaster to maintain quality and control.
Erik’s barista talents stretch the assumed limits of latte art. “I ordered a flat white and received a landscape drawing of a swiss chalet complete with smoking chimney, pine trees and snow-capped mountains in the background”. Organic loose leaf teas is the new addition to the business and a large range will be released in the coming weeks. Out of the ordinary, these teas will blend the traditional teas with flowers, herbs and dried fruits. Pop in for a brunch or coffee and enjoy the new breezy and rustic “coffee garden” or settle in on the couch and take in the eclectic interior décor reminiscent of an old 1920s wine bar. Sipping duck coffee roasters key to success is in the use of high altitude specialty grade beans from different growing regions in the world. One on one customer service and support matched with genuine passion for the café industry and life.

Occasionally something inspirational comes along that really takes your breath away, something like … Gallery Earth!
H
olding its first public exhibition at Cairn’s Salt House on August 13, 2014 Gallery Earth will showcase a number of its exquisite nature images taken around the world by local photographer and paraglider Ben Neale. CairnsLife journalist Melissa Szalai caught up with Ben recently to find out more about Gallery Earth. “To change the world and have an unforgettable adventure doing it is Gallery Earth’s vision,” says Ben, whose passion for nature and photography is intrinsic. “There’s an unspoken communication between the natural environment and human beings - a connection, presence.” “It’s the way an indoor plant changes the feeling of an office, or how infinitely better you feel after a walk along the beach.” “When I’m alone 1500 feet above the great barrier reef or following a heard of wild elephants through the Okavango Delta suspended only by 6.2mm Kevlar lines, there’s a stillness, a beauty - that feeling of connection and the essence that time stands still.” “I believe if we strengthen that connection it will create positive change in people’s lives.” Gallery Earth is an avenue to bring that connection into people’s homes through its extraordinary photography of some of our planet’s most remote places and wildlife habitats. The venture is a collaboration between Ben and hisphotographic and paragliding expertise, his wife and travelling partner Kylie Bertram, and friend and business partner Igor Knezevic. Ben and Igor, former high school mates, recently joined forces to create the Gallery Earth brand. “Kylie and I are great at problem solving photographic solutions out the back of a jeep in sub-Saharan Africa, yet need the support of Igor - who has similar social and environmental values, and experience in brand development and marketing,” admits Ben. “Igor’s experience and enthusiasm were the catalyst for the founding of Gallery Earth.” “It all began with a trip to Nepal in 2006 - the first time an aerial aspect was incorporated into my photography.” “I learned to fly the paraglider with a perpetually high (literally – no pun intended) French expat at the foothills of the Himalayas.
67
Seeing the amazing potential for access to the air with the paraglider I started to incorporate photography into the flying process.” “Since then Kylie and I have travelled far and wide, experiencing many challenges along the way.” “Our last trip to Africa was a stand out! We knew little about local weather, laws, wildlife or conditions. The local Army and an adolescent bull elephant took a particular interest in our project and equipment, which was terrifying at first, but lots of fun in the end. An apple or a Dunhill light (Botswanan army Cigarette of choice) quickly became the currency of friendship and a free pass.” “Africa is truly a country of contrasts – home to the world’s largest deserts and swamplands. These contrasts coupled with remote locations made this trip particularly challenging.” “Strong winds, break downs, elephants forever raiding our tent, hyenas making off with photography equipment, endless flying near misses - at one point the glider getting caught up in the propeller of the paramotor at 3000ft above the desert, and even a pride of lions trapping us inside our car for six hours made for a very memorable and photographically rich adventure.” “Our images are taken with extremely high resolution digital cameras to produce large format prints up to 200 megapixels and expertly finished.” “During the past couple of years Gallery Earth’s images have been featured by Australian Geographic and the South Australian Museum; and most recently by National Geographic and African Geographic magazines.” “Such success proves beyond our wildest expectations, particularly when I look back to eight years ago when I was running up and down the frozen hillside of the Himalayas with a high-as-kite Frenchmen,” says Ben. “Come along and see for yourself the beauty of the Earth’s incredible landscapes captured in photography at our Salt House exhibition, or visit www.galleryearth.com.au or www.facebook.com/galleryearth.” *Gallery Earth’s images are free for use by environmental or social change based NGOs that have no political affiliation or business interest. Gallery Earth also runs donation initiatives for organisations such as the World Wildlife Foundation.

Knight By Eva Conley Grace Knight needs no introduction to Australian audiences, she is easily one of the most revered jazz vocalists in the country. Nor is she any stranger to North Queensland, and as she prepares for her August show at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the acclaimed Jazz Up North series, Grace says she is looking forward to performing in the region again. After being part of the Jazz Up North series in previous years, Grace says Tanks Arts Centre as a venue is fantastic. “Everything about it runs like a well-oiled machine,” she says. “But most of all, the audience are so welcoming. On stage I feel like I’m performing to an audience that gives as much or more than we give them. The energy that bounces between us leaves me feeling quite ‘high’ after the gig. Some venues you sort of dread playing… Tanks is the exact opposite, you can’t wait to get back.” When it comes to performing live, Grace is reputed as one of the country’s most versatile performers. From fronting popdarlings Eurogliders to her wellestablished jazz career, Grace does it all with style. She started in the music business singing in folk clubs in the UK and ‘sang’ her way over to Australia on the Women’s Weekly World Cruise. It was in Perth that she found success in a musical partnership with Bernie Lynch in Eurogliders. The band had hits such as Heaven (Must Be There) and many more. When Grace appeared in the ABC television series Come In Spinner she quickly earned the reputation as one of Australia’s ladies of jazz. Recently she has been mixing it up, interspersing jazz shows with a Eurogliders reunion tour. It’s certainly been a busy 12-months
GRACE KNIGHT FRIDAY 29 AUGUST Considered one of the most enduring talents in Australian music, with ARIA nominations and chart topping recordings, Grace Knight is heading back to Tanks as part of the Jazz Up North Series. Following her success with ‘80s band Eurogliders, she has transformed herself from Pop Princess to Queen of Cool as a jazz solo artist, performing over the years to rapt audiences including the likes of President Clinton and Princess Diana.

for the now Melbourne-based performer, and a trip up to North Queensland during the winter is certainly something to look forward to. Grace has been carefully preparing for her Tanks show. “The first thing is to make sure I bring fantastic musicians with me,” she says. “The flow of the show is very important… I try to take people on a bit of a journey, so I’ll modify which songs I put in my set depending on all sorts of things like the size of the audience, the quality of the sound in the venue, the length of the show. I’ll quite often change things during the show depending on how the audience is reacting… you’ve got to be sensitive to the mood of the audience.” For the Tanks show, Grace says audiences can expect a smattering of tracks from across her jazz career. “Some songs like Fever and Crazy I’ve been playing for over 20 years and the audience never seems to tire of them, but I’ll be doing songs from most of my albums… and maybe a couple of surprises.” Grace Knight performs at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the Jazz Up North series on Friday 29th August. eter and I met when we were 15 years old. I found him a little annoying at first, constantly trying to get my attention during our year 10 science class. In the end his school boy charms and cheekiness won me over and it was I who made the courageous move of asking him to be my boyfriend on the 21st June 2003. We’ve been a part of each other lives ever since.
The proposal: It was Krystel’s birthday and I (the groom) had organized a morning picnic on our favorite beach. I was so nervous and Krystel was completely oblivious, singing “Marry You” by Bruno Mars on the way there. I didn’t realize how scared I was going to be and when I got down on one knee, I could feel my heart beating. I asked the question after a short speech and I didn’t even have her attention at the time. Krystel ended up turning around, looked at the ring she was in shock. I’ll never forget the smile she had when she realized what I was doing. I ended up having to say my little speech and ask her again! The proposal and the moments leading up to is something I’ll remember forever.

Cyclone Protection Australia is a Cairns based company formed by long term Cairns residents Jim Reeves and Menno Nentjes.
Previous weaker cyclones and Larry had heightened our awareness but Yasi was the first time we experienced a sense of genuine fear. After days covering our houses in plywood and timber we felt that there was an enormous void in practical, effective options to protect homes and businesses in Australia. Our research led us to AstroGuard which is the most popular and effective system in the USA. With our combined experience in construction, design and disaster management we are comfortable expanding the business over here. Cyclone Protection Australia is now the sole distributor of AstroGuard throughout Australia and the South Pacific. We have taken the product through extensive testing to more stringent Australian standards at the Cyclone Testing Station at James Cook University, Townsville. Ours is the only system that has building code approval for zone C cyclone prone areas of Australia and the only one with demonstrated effectiveness at this level of testing. AstroGuard is an extremely strong nylon polymer with a ceramic UV resistant coat. It can cover openings of all sizes from windows to patios to large roller doors. Measured sheets are attached to previously installed stainless steel anchor bolts within the concrete or timber around the opening.
After initial installation the system is designed to be folded and easily stored until needed. Deployment before a cyclone can take as little as 2 hours for a 3 bedroomed house - all that is needed is a cordless drill. A complete explanation is available on the website. The system withstands wind in excess of 300 km/hr and impacts from 4 kg missiles travelling at over 100 km/hr. It is completely windproof and waterproof. This provides a complete barrier to the elements and is vital to maintaining the pressure envelope and integrity of a building even in the event of a breakage. It also prevents massive internal water damage which can render buildings uninhabitable. In many instances the attached AstroGuard may be stronger than the structures it is covering not just the glass. Often hardware like locks, latches, hinges and roller mechanisms fail under the intense loads placed upon them. Correctly attached AstroGuard buffers these forces and can dramatically reduce the likelihood of failure. In spite of its incredible strength it is a relatively light fabric that can be folded for easy storage and deployed easily and safely without any special requirements or physical strength. It far outperforms plywood at every level. We believe that we will see an increase in the frequency and intensity of cyclones in the future.
The map below demonstrates that we are very much in the centre of cyclone activity in this region.
Since this was published Cairns has narrowly avoided direct hits by 3 category 5 cyclones in 8 years!!
Cyclone Protection Australia is committed to providing a versatile, effective and safe solution to the problem of protecting homes and businesses in the region. We are establishing contacts with government agencies -our system protects the Disaster Coordination Centre in Atherton and will be used to enhance community shelters in the future. AstroGuard will be installed on a second resort in Fiji later this year. Commercial property managers are considering how our product may protect their assets. This is in addition to our expanding our domestic housing market. We have a team of skilled installers but also provide support to customers who choose to install the product themselves or have their builders do it for them. This ranges from our website installation guide to telephone advice or even going on site and assisting customers until they are comfortable. Our product is a well-researched, developed purely for this purpose and has the testing to back it up. We have invested heavily in setting up the business and will be here for many years to come.
A cyclone can be scary, but you’ll feel secure knowing your family is protected. This fabric protection system covers all openings on your home to provide the best cyclonic wind and rain protection for your home and family. Why choose Cyclone Protection Australia? + Simple and easy to deploy in the event of a cyclone or severe storm + Incredibly strong – field proven in Category 5 cyclones + Totally wind and waterproof and maintains a complete barrier to the elements

la and Marie’s work is internationally renowned and sought after by both public and private collectors worldwide. They have exhibited in more than 40 international exhibitions in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Dubai, Indonesia, Taipei and Japan. From 1978 to 1981 Ola and Marie spent three years in Swaziland (Africa) establishing Ngwenya Glassblowing Studio as a Swedish government development project. In 1982 they moved to New Zealand, choosing to become citizens. Today they share their time between New Zealand and Australia. “ As an artist, I take my inspiration from the pure beauty and simplicity of nature. From the natural world and all its warm colours, from delicate light and smooth shapes of the landscape, from the vibrant energy of the earth and the fresh green lushness of the bush.” Marie Simberg - Hoglund In 2000 and 2003, Höglund Art Glass was appointed to produce the Official Team New Zealand and America’s Cup art glass. The success in 2000 led to the next prestigious invitation; to create the art glass for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games – The Games of the New Millennium. Ola and Marie designed a collection of bright and colourful art glass for this exciting event.

Glass, it’s everywhere we look. But most of it is utilitarian, but every now and then we are presented with something that reveals its real beauty.
“ Being a glass blower is a bit like being a musician every day is spent practising and training. Glass is so technically difficult to work with and has a life of it’s own. As an artist I am fascinated by making a form with the human breath. The heat of the furnace and the molten, soft glass are my inspiration.” Ola Hoglund They also created ‘Athletes in Motion’ – a limited edition of one-off Graal pieces, capturing the strong, graceful movements of athletes between several layers of heavy, crystal glass. These unique pieces celebrated the strength and agility of the athletic human body when in competition with the best sports people in the world. In May 2002, New Zealand Post and the Royal Sweden Post released a joint stamp issue – Art meets Craft. Each stamp featured a Rainforest Graal vase designed and made by Ola Höglund and Marie Simberg-Höglund. Two eye catching First Day covers accompany the stamps. The artistry displayed in the stamps lead to the issue becoming one of the few prestigious Limited Editions created by New Zealand Post each year. Only 2,000 of the editions will ever be produced and were sold before the release.

set to soar A growing population and strengthening property market could be just the beginning of a major economic boom in Cairns.
E
conomists have revealed the city’s population grew 32 per cent between 2002 and 2013, while property sales have increased 40 per cent in the past three years. Speaking at the Cairns Chamber of Commerce Economic Forecast business luncheon in July, economic researcher and director of Herron Todd White, Rick Carr, said the trends were tipped to continue, with an extra 90,000 new residents predicted to call Cairns home if the Aquis development proceeds. Mr Carr said Cairns moved to the start of a recovery phase in late 2013 and had been consolidating its position since. “So the overall situation is that prices are creeping up, not leaping up.

“In
the last recovery in the early 2000s it took three years of increasing volumes before prices started to substantively move. This time around we’ve now had three years of increasing volumes, so if history repeats itself, the good news for property owners, or the bad news for property buyers, is that rising prices are now in store.” Mr Carr said further evidence of a strengthening housing market was the shrinking supply of properties for sale in the area. Houses and units are both selling faster than they are being listed for sale. “Real estate agents are complaining they can’t get enough stock to meet the demand,” he said. “However there’s a lot of latent stock out there from people who have been wishing to sell for some time, but have been deterred from doing so by the state of the market or prices. Once prices start to rise, and in particular once they get back to the levels of the previous peak, we’ll see a lot of that stock come onto the market.”
Despite the increased volume of sales, property sales in Cairns still remain below the ‘normal’ trend. Mr Carr said house prices had only slight gains during the past three years, up by a combined six per cent across the board, while unit prices were down 25 per cent on the 2008 peak following building insurance hikes. “The new unit market is still in the doldrums with an almost complete absence of new unit construction over the last five years and all four major unit developers having gone into receivership,” Mr Carr said. “However, indications are that unit development is starting to revive with a number of development applications before Council.” Perhaps further evidence of this is reinvigorating land sales, up 230 per cent in the past three years. Mr Carr warned that figure was coming off an ‘inordinately low base’ and remained only a fraction of normal levels. “From the handful of land estates that continued on through the lean years we are now seeing others
come out of hibernation. Even so, land is now being sold faster than it can be produced, due to depleted development and construction capacity and off-theplan sales of lots yet to be constructed.” Similarly, the lack of construction and investment has resulted in a tight rental market. But Mr Carr says other market metrics are moving positively. “The average number of days on the market to achieve a sale is reducing, meaning properties are turning over quicker,” he said. “The average vendor discount – the differential between the price at which a property is first listed and its ultimate selling price – is also shrinking.” Commercial and industrial markets are slowly increasing but are still at the bottom of the market, Mr Carr says. “We normally expect the commercial and industrial markets to start their recovery about 12 months behind the local residential market. That hasn’t happened yet but ought to be imminent.”
H OME
New home building prices in Cairns are on the rise All indicators are pointing to an increase in local building activity – Aquis; Sydney & Melbourne markets on the rise; overseas tourists increasing & recovery from GFC is under way. This means that all industries in Cairns will be busier. There is a great deal of available information about what will happen over the next few years and this will relate to some changes in our local construction industry. The residential building market will change from the fairly easygoing nature it is now. Some developers and major suppliers are already reacting because they can see that the market will absorb the increases. It’s all about supply and demand. As the industry gets busier choices of where you can build, who you can build with and building times will change, due to the demand for more housing. The Cairns region currently has reasonably affordable housing and we all like it that way. Our home prices compared to other similar Aussie cities are very competitive;
construction prices haven’t risen much in the last few years and our subbies haven’t had an increase in rates for many years. Our current rental vacancy rate for houses and units is very low which means investors are coming back into our housing market putting more pressure on the demand. I am seeing this happening already with our investment enquires coming from local, interstate and overseas clients increasing. Results of this increase in activity is happening now with some land developers either withholding land releases, increasing their prices or reserving land for particular investors. Some builders are concentrating on building “spec” homes only and this is tying up land in the process. All of these means less choice for you, the new home owner. Local, long term builders who have experience in building the type of home you are looking for will be able to guide you through the process. They know the market;

PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY EARLVILLE VETS
Many people welcome a dog into their lives without any knowledge of the inherited behaviour of their new companion. In some cases this results in an innocent person committing to ownership of an incompatible and often unsafe animal. What happens when we allow dogs with unstable temperaments to produce offspring? In years gone by dogs were generally purchased from a breeder or through visiting a recognised refuge. Often we knew someone with a dog that had a litter of pups and one would then be welcomed into our home. Prospective owners could interact with the dogs and would be able to view both parents. Refuge organisations would conduct a series of behavioural tests on their dogs, to ensure they were suitable for adoption. In our modern world it is becoming increasingly common to purchase a pet without sighting the dog, as social media opens up a new world of online shopping in the canine industry. Reputable breeders consider not only the physical suitability of their dogs, but also assess the temperament of the animals before deciding on a breeding pair. Sadly
there are many people who breed dogs that are completely inappropriate for the domestic environment. Dogs with serious temperament instability such as anxiety and aggression are producing puppies with inherited behavioural characteristics that are unacceptable and dangerous in our community. Many of the dogs I work with have behavioural problems which are a direct reflection of genetics. These owners then have the responsibility of caring for a dog that is unstable, and very often aggressive towards humans and other animals. In some cases they are then faced with the heartbreaking decision of having their dog destroyed. The other aspect of this irresponsible breeding is the unthinkable amount of dogs that are surrendered or abandoned every day due to the problems associated with inherited behaviour. The

responsibility of ongoing care then falls on the shoulders of other people who have to decide if the dog can either be rehabilitated or needs to be humanly put to sleep. When a dog is aggressive, fearful or antisocial that animal should never be allowed to reproduce. When purchasing a dog, ensure that you are able to view the parents, interact with the dog and only purchase dogs from a reliable source. Seek advice from a qualified professional in canine behaviour before welcoming any new dog into your home.

Hang out with partner and 2 daughters- this generally involves mountain biking and I love cooking. What are you passionate about? Having a healthy and happy life for myself, family and friends. Just have fun!

he 21st century will see the fruition of the development of this remarkable product. The stone age, the bronze age, the iron age, the era of steel, and now aluminium will supplant them all! In our own way, we will have been part of this evolution. Already we have been privileged enough to be involved in the development of an extruded aluminium engine, and this is simply one of the many new technology and development projects that we are assisting on. Improvements in aluminium metallurgy, quality, and finish promise to revolutionise the properties of this, already versatile, product and it would be fair to say that within our organisation we consider ourselves to be among the advance guard of a new technology. From our engineers building water towers and boats in their spare time, to our drafting personnel using CAD tools to design new profiles in extrusions, we

Also what makes the company different from other mobility stores is the team understands every customer has different needs. ne of the largest medical centres in the area, Omega Health was established by Melbourne GP Anthony Mahler in 2006 upon his relocation to Cairns to set up his own private practice. Dr Mahler was joined by Dr Uri Scelwyn in 2009, and as partners their vision to grow the practice began to take shape. “In 2011 Omega Health moved into a larger, purpose built premises located in Pease Street, Manoora at the front of the Brinsmead Shopping Centre to facilitate an expanding range of health services designed to adapt to the needs of the local community,” says Dr Mahler. “The new premises provided room for 12 consulting rooms, a large treatment area, and an adjacent pathology collecting theatre.” “Creating new inroads into improved medical care in the Cairns region over the past eight years has seen the introduction of specialty doctors such as Specialist Behavioural Paediatrician Donna Gandini, who joined us in 2012, and Dermatologist Simon Tucker, who came on board earlier this year.” “Today the Omega Health has 15 doctors, which includes three GP Registrars as OHMC is an accredited Teaching Practice.” Dr Mahler added that three nurses, a Diabetic Educator, Exercise Physiologist and Indigenous Health Worker completed the Omega Health team to facilitate key services across a broad spectrum in general practice, skin cancer medicine and Indigenous Health. “Omega Health is the only skin cancer clinic in Cairns with the support of a Dermatologist, which provides a very valuable service for our patients.”
113
Omega Health Medical Centre continues to strengthen its commitment to provide quality health care to the Cairns community through a diverse range of services.
“Omega Health will be expanding its premises with construction to begin this month to incorporate a new space for our existing skin cancer clinic.” “This is very exciting as Dr Scelwyn and I both have a keen interest in skin cancer medicine. Skin Cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australians; and due to our climate here in tropical North Queensland your chances of developing a skin cancer are higher.” “If caught early, most skin cancers are easily treated and cured.” Another initiative that plays an integral role in Omega Health’s commitment to a high standard of community-focused healthcare is its Community Outreach program. “We recognised early on that there was a gap in providing consistent culturally appropriate care to our community,” says Dr Mahler. “Two of our GP’s – a husband and wife team, join our Indigenous Health Worker in visiting homeless/ diversionary shelters as well as community hubs in Cairns once or twice a week.” “By initiating this dedicated outreach program with a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health we believe we are achieving our goal to fill this gap.” Omega Health Medical Centre has earned a reputation for quality health care on many levels, which includes being open seven days a week. The Discount Drug Stores’ Pease Street pharmacy is dedicated to providing quality, professional services and natural health care options.
T
he pharmacy is a franchise, owned by local brothers Frank and Vince Pappalardo who are following in their father Sam’s footsteps. Sam Pappalardo was in partnership with Max Crittenden in Moynahans Pharmacy on Lake Street and looked after the health of Cairns locals for decades. Pease Street Discount Drug Store was purchased 10 years ago by Frank and Vince, who have worked on expanding what the pharmacy offers with emphasis on bringing health food to Cairns people at discounted everyday low prices making it accessible for everyone. Recognising the importance of offering a point of difference, the pharmacy exceeds expectation by providing clinical pharmacist services, facilitating Absence from Work Certificates, offering Flu Vaccinations with no script required, and administering vaccines. It also offers free blood pressure checks, home medicine reviews, a medication management program – including a free SMS script reminder service, prescription storage, and safety net tracking; and is a National Diabetes Services Scheme approved supplier.

Another advantage is that it’s the only pharmacy in far North Queensland with a Webster packing robot, which is helpful for those requiring Webster packs to maintain their daily medication schedule. Add the pharmacy’s ability to provide avenues for the public to access important information about a range of health issues and topics through educational Health Clinics and Health Focus promotions and the Pease Street Discount Drug Store sets a precedent in a highly competitive industry. With an ongoing commitment to support a healthy lifestyle through its in-house whole health food store, customers can select from a range of organic foods, skincare, and environmentally friendly cleaning products. Gluten free options are on offer as well as fresh bread deliveries, milk and dairy alternatives, superfoods, a wide range of proteins and supplements, teas, weight loss friendly products, bamboo clothing, incense, essential oils, and homeopathics. A naturopath is in-store Monday through Saturday, and free 15-minute consultations can be arranged. Naturopathic services include ABO blood typing, blood type diet, HCG diet, zinc testing and candida testing, assisting with female reproductive issues and working with babies and children. The store is open from 8.00am till 7.30pm week days. Saturday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and on Sunday 9.00am till 5.30pm. Watch for new and exciting things to come with a large expansion planned for the near future at the Pease Street Discount Drug Store, open seven days a week (07 4053 2883).
