nother financial year done and dusted and sorry to say but a lot of local businesses have taken a beating over the past 12 months. It’s no easy task to be self-employed or to run a local business in an economy unsure of its current situation. We tend to believe everything will be alright and the powers to be have it all under control, and it would be easy for me to write a colourful, positive and vibrant rant on how the new financial year will bring hope, promise and goodwill to all, but in reality I’m not the one with the crystal ball. I do know 3 things for sure. Cairns always rebounds from economic recession, we do live in an amazing part of the world, and the only way to increase business return is to promote the hell out of yourself. So that said, take measure in the new financial year and look forward to these three sureties. 1) The local economy is going to grow in the next twelve months boosted by a new city centre, unprecedented development approvals and growing house prices (buy a block of land and build a house on it because you know prices will rise.) 2) You live in an amazing place so stop and take time to smell the roses 3) A good marketing campaign always gets noticed, so be creative, inventive and get yourself out their (if you build it they will come). Enjoy this issue, and pick up the phone any time you like and tell us what we can promote or write about to make life in Cairns more enjoyable.

The

Great Australian Dream...

is alive and well

C

onservative Prime Minister Robert Menzies believed that one of the best instincts in us is that which induces us to have a house and a garden which is ours into which no stranger may come against our will. Citizens committed to mortgages and home improvements tended not to be revolutionaries. During Menzies’ 17-year leadership, all kinds of Federal and State housing schemes made the dream more accessible and affordable. In the early 1950s, 50% of Australia’s homes were either owned or were being purchased by the people who lived in them. But by 1966 that number had risen to 75%.

Today home ownership in many parts of Australia is becoming more and more difficult. Cairns on the other hand is still very affordable and it is within reach to own your own piece of paradise, but we better hurry. With economic news around the world improving and house prices slowly increasing in Southern states it won’t be long before Cairns joins the beat of southern drums and house prices increase.

9

CairnsLife

This with the possible inclusion into the mix of large developments and growing employment needs of the North (Aquis not an exception) the need for housing will undoubtedly increase prices. The following feature include profiles and interviews with prominent builders and service providers in the local area and looks at their ability to get us all thinking about the benefits of getting us into our very own “Australian Dream” sooner than latter.

Brookfield Residential Properties is a name synonymous with quality, master-planned residential developments built on integrity and embracing the very qualities that define a happy, healthy and fulfilling life. In the Tropical North Brookfield’s mission is exemplified at Bluewater and Argentea.

The beauty of life on the Northern Beaches does not boil down to one, but a whole series of attributes. Both Argentea and Bluewater offer the convenience of a short drive from Cairns with the luxury of quiet neighbourhoods and spacious, picturesque surroundings. Each are equipped with their own set of high quality amenities and access to community services along with many people’s wish list of idyllic rainforest surroundings, walkways, parks and a stone’s throw access to sand and sea. Bluewater in particular hits the spot with a diverse market, particularly families who love the open, 45 hectares of space taking in the Central Parklands, picnic and barbecue areas and the soon to be completed, Bluewater Playground. Then of course there is the shining light of life at Bluewater, its state-ofthe-art, 108 berth marina. Since its introduction in 2006 it has achieved very high occupancies and pleasing returns on investment for owners. Mr Phil Leahy, National Director of Brookfield Residential Properties said the northern beaches is showing very good growth and again it comes down to a combination of factors that include investment potential, idyllic surroundings, quality amenities and close proximity to community services – for instance, schools and shopping centres. The northern beaches are most definitely the place of the future with proposed developments paving the way to an even better quality of life. Bluewater’s own commercial and residential Marina precinct will begin construction soon and we have welcomed the plans from those involved.

The proposed Bluewater Hotel will be news to many following completion of the acquisition by the Sayers family that have been involved in the hospitality industry for over 30 years and previously owned and built the Country Club Hotel in Kununurra, Western Australia; a four and half star resort with 90 rooms and three bars and restaurants. General Manager and Licensee, Alex Sayers says their latest project will be a great boon for the region. The venue will include bar and restaurant facilities with alfresco dining, beer garden and deck overlooking marina. Taking advantage of the waterfront location, the Sayers’ said the ‘feel’ would reflect the surroundings. Destined to be the perfect place for ‘a drink’ after work or on the weekend, the hotel will stock a selection of over 100 Australian boutique wines, international classics and a balanced mix of mainstream and fresh craft beers and ciders. Added to this there will be a small and select range bottle shop and deli/convenience store to provide gourmet and convenience foods for Bluewater’s community and surrounding areas. Mr Sayers also revealed plans for a function venue on top overlooking the marina that will provide stunning views and a unique address for weddings, parties and functions. Local Design and Construct Company Prime Constructions has been engaged by the Sayers to deliver the project. Construction Manager John MacPherson says this is a very exciting project that is due for completion in early May, 2015.

CairnsLife

“Plans for the hotel complex reveal a very impressive building that will operate as a vibrant and sophisticated entertainment and eating hub for people of the Northern Beaches.” Be it first time home buyers, young families, retirees or investors, everyone suits the truly special lifestyle that Bluewater and Argentea have to offer. If the desire to live a life promoting health, wealth and happiness is appealing then Bluewater and Argentea are unequivocally, the ‘Place to Live’.

Phillip and Charmaine Matthews have long stopped counting the awards for their work in the building industry.

For them, building is not about accolades or publicity, but helping other Queenslanders into their dream home. Phillip and Charmaine are not only the owners of the Austart Homes Cairns franchise, but also the directors of Austart Homes Australia. Together they have more than 60 years combined experience in the joinery, building and architecture industries, and Phillip has built more than 3000 homes across Queensland and New South Wales. He says it is that volume and longevity that sets Austart Homes apart, and gives customers peace of mind. “We are a building company that’s here to stay, and we have a proven track record,” he says.

“We are the most awarded builder in Cairns, so if anybody ought to get it right, it’s us.” Charmaine agrees.

Donna and Peter Fadersen, Clifton Beach

The value Austart homes offers is unrivalled in Cairns. You guys offer high quality at a great price. Everyone who visits our home comments on the high level of workmanship and the family friendly layout. It is the perfect family home and we are sure we’ll be happy here for many years to come!

Katrina and George McCallum, Palm Cove

Your customer service was exceptionally good and we were always treated with such warmth, friendliness and professionalism. You even handed over the house two weeks earlier than scheduled and thanks for the beautiful flowers as well. What we really appreciated was your quick response to our queries and our changes to the designs even though some of them were at the very last minute. Thank you for this as we were able to get exactly what we wanted in our new home.

Ramy and Sharita Gokal, Smithfield

Whether it’s a first home, dream home or investment property, Charmaine, Phillip and their professional team can design and build to suit any budget or lifestyle. And with over 50 designs available for clients to choose from and customise, there is a home to suit everyone. “Our personalised, hands-on policy ensures everyone involved in your project knows just what your needs and desires are, so your expectations are always met,” Charmaine says. “We can also modify our designs to truly capture the uniqueness of your visions. Maybe you already have plans of your own we can develop into a reality for you. Anything is possible with Austart Homes as we strive to satisfy and please.

23

Peter and I are thrilled with our new home and so pleased we chose Austart Homes to build our dream home. The customer service, design, care and professionalism you have shown all along has been amazing and has made the experience exciting all the way. We have settled in and wouldn’t change a thing.

You instantly put us at ease with your non-pushy approach, visible competence & experience and the friendliness of the whole team. Thank you for having an easy and transparent contract that truly did cover everything. We were so excited to move in to our new house, everyone told us that builders never stick to their timeframes, well everyone was wrong, we moved in right on schedule & had unpacked just in time for Christmas.

For Allaro Homes’ owners Wayne and Jenny Cavallaro, it is attention to detail that drives home building perfection, something they have focused on since establishing in Far North Queensland three decades ago.

“We have been doing this for a very long time now, first as W&J Cavallaro Builders, which grew into Better Homes Queensland and now Allaro Homes.”

“Over the years we have devoted considerable resources and time to perfecting the customer’s home building experience”. Wayne says it’s this dedication and commitment to both detail and the customer experience that has earned Allaro Homes a reputation for exceptional quality, integrity and service. “Building a home is more than great design and quality construction, we believe that building a new home should be exciting, fun and a really positive experience, taking the time to celebrate the milestones along the way with friends and family – it is this belief that is at the very heart of the Allaro experience,” Wayne adds.

Wayne goes on to explain.

Empowered design Through the development of innovative and customer centred design tools, Allaro Homes has transformed the entire customer journey, and the driving force behind this is Wayne and Jenny’s eldest son Troy Cavallaro. Incorporated in the Allaro Design Suite is a comprehensive range of design tools that empower the customer to shape and design their dream home. Customers are able to collect and share their

design ideas using the Allaro Pinboard, seek inspiration from the design Portfolio, and view their home in full cinema style 3D. “Seeing a new design in Allaro 3D for the first time is a real kick for us and the customer. Being able to walk through your home before a block is laid allows our customers to refine their design to the very last detail – it’s a big day for everyone”. Troy shares. This Design Suite, together with a cutting edge, patented software system that allows Allaro Homes to seamlessly plan and manage home construction to the finest detail, makes this locally owned company one of the most innovative builders in this region.

“Every step of the home building process has been refined and perfected and we couldn’t ask for a better team to bring it all together,” WAYNE SAYS PROUDLY. Building the very best home is about achieving perfection through innovation, quality, design and style. Allaro Homes continues to prove just how passionate, and motivated they are to challenge the status quo with one clear objective – to put the client first and ensure every home is planned to perfection.

Is your haven Redefining The Way We LiVe In The City Transform Your Thinking With Mi-Haven

MiHaven is an award-winning building company that breaks from convention in every way. Its designs and construction are innovative, sustainable and cyclone rated while the company ethos is underpinned by a strong social responsibility that addresses change in the sector of long term unemployment with its MiLife Change training program. In its latest development, MiHaven answers the conundrum facing many prospective home owners and investors, empty nesters and young (and old) professionals (especially those of us that adore our family pet) with its lifestyle alternative to apartment living; the MiHaven Inner-City Haven. Director of MiHaven, Sarah Mort said they have just released their own brand of architecturally designed homes that are specifically suited to compact, inner-city blocks (ie less than 400m2) “What this lifestyle concept does is provide a welcome alternative to the many and various constraints associated with apartment living while ticking several other boxes. “I speak from experience. Initially, we were looking to design this type of home for ourselves. We wanted to live close to work but were not keen on apartment life. We wanted a small garden for our dog, Max, but we realised we didn’t have the time to maintain a sprawling property. So we put all our knowledge, including my town planning expertise, James’ property development experience and creativity to work, found the ideal block and came up with this – our home and the prototype of MiHaven’s Inner-City Haven that is so cool – it has everything you need without the things you don’t – think expensive body corporate fees and shared facilities for starters.” Sarah and her husband, James’ inner-city home is a gorgeous example of how less is more without skimping on the things that matter; cyclone rated protection and safety, state-of-the-art security and the ability to personalise fittings to reflect each individual owner. “Along with a space for Max, we are always very particular about our kitchen and bathrooms so

extra attention went into the design phase and choosing the tiles and fittings that would fulfil the look and feel we were after (some that we had acquired on overseas jaunts to Bali and India). Its each to their own with our clients encouraged to take advantage of the flexibility we offer by having their own input into design features. ” Sarah says there is no waiting period to build with several inner-city blocks ready to build on. “Anyone interested is encouraged to view our display home and talk to us about the options available. I know people will be surprised with the value and quality of what their money can buy.” We are ready to roll out another two houses in the inner city and have a number of people who have now registered their interest wanting to buy off the plan. We however allow our clients to individualise some of the interior details to suit their style and family needs. MiHaven’s training company goes hand in hand with its day-to-day construction operation and is an integral part of the business model. In May this year the company launched its new, MiLife Change Program that is the culmination of everything learned in the past two years’ they have been training the long term unemployed. When you invest in a MiHaven home you are also supporting the creation of a building career for MiHaven’s MiLife training participants. To enquire about making your own MiHaven Inner-City Haven a reality or for information about the MiLife Change program, contact MiHaven on tel: 07 40410407 or visit the website on www.mihaven.com.au

Admired since 1959, Dixon Homes prides itself on offering the largest range of homes at the best possible prices. With over 2000 designs, three specifications and prices starting at just $110,000, Dixon Homes certainly offers ‘Real Choice, Real Quality, Real Value’. But what really sets Dixon Homes apart is its people – experienced, professional and caring staff who work closely with each client to create a unique, personalised home.

This month we meet up with some of the team from Dixon Homes Cairns…. Matt Rutherford Consultant

Matt joined Dixon Homes Cairns 18 months ago, bringing with him 15 years experience building homes. He finds nothing more exciting than immersing himself in his client’s dreams. “Whether it’s their first or fifth time building, it’s a good feeling to imagine what someone really wants in my own head and help make it a reality,” he says. “My job is to help them through the process. It should be exciting, something you look back on with fond memories, particularly of our team’s professionalism.” Matt admits the climate and landscape of Far North Queensland presents extra challenges, but the team will always try to find a way to make the impossible happen. Born in Adelaide, Matt first moved to Cairns in 1996 and made the permanent shift in 2010. Drawn by the area’s natural beauty and business opportunities, he believes Cairns will continue to expand and looks forward to being part of that with one of Queensland’s leading home builders.

Robert Annibale

Construction Manager After 35 years in the building industry, Robert is well placed to offer clients knowledgeable advice and honest answers. A Cairns local, Robert was an affiliated builder before joining Dixon Homes 11 years ago. He says no two days are ever the same, and loves the challenges and satisfaction of solving problems. “There’s the great feeling of knowing a job has been done well when we hear from clients how pleased they are with their new home. Also the fact we can walk down the street, bump into them and be able to look them in the eye knowing the finished product is of a very high quality, built with a great deal of professionalism and care.

31

“We all take a lot of pride in what we do.” Jacqueline Bortfeld-Jungnitsch Consultant

Originally from Germany, Jacqueline was drawn to Cairns for its warm weather and stunning beaches. She joined the team at Dixon Homes Cairns in April 2012, contributing her 30 years’ experience as an architect. Jacqueline is best known for her ability to listen and translate ideas into a custom design, with all the advantages of a project builder. She says the best part of working for an organisation like Dixon Homes is transparency – “the clients always know what they’re getting, there’s no hidden surprises.” Jacqueline enjoys positive working relationships with her clients, colleagues and site managers, and has a particular fondness for the architecture and atmosphere of the Dixon Homes office.

Choosing the Builder that’s right for you So you’ve made the decision to build your new home. Congratulations!! Now you have to decide which builder to use. Building a home is one of the biggest investments you can make in your life and you need to get it right, so make sure your builder is someone you can work very closely with over the next 6- 12 months. There are many good builders in the Cairns area and they are suited to different types of construction. It can be confusing so take a little time to be comfortable with your decision and the person you will be dealing with. For instance; if you are looking to build your first home you may be on a limited budget so choose a well-known, local project builder with pre-priced plans and inclusions and they will have a consultant that can work with you. If you are building on a slope then make sure the builder is experienced in this type of construction and knows all the site requirements as this can be a complex area of construction. Many builders have experience with building on flat blocks of land, but this is Cairns and many of our blocks are sloping. If you want to build a 2 storey home or use different materials, then your builder should have experience at this. The builder will need to know up to date costs associated with these methods of construction, the requirements for cyclonic regions, good

energy efficient design principles and will be able to advise you on the most cost effective method suited to your requirements. When talking to builders make sure your quotes are for completed items. Some builders do not include things like site works, water meters, termite treatment, driveways, necessary retaining walls and many other requirements that are essential to your new home build. You may find that a builder’s initial quote has to be increased to include some of these things, whereas other builders will include them. Some builders will sign up your Building Agreement and then you won’t deal with that person again but are passed on to someone else. Some companies may be sales only and are the licensed builder that will be building your home. Make sure you are aware of this before you go to contract and ask who you will be dealing with before, during and at handover as this can affect quality control and your new home warranty. Check with the builder and their specification and make sure all the inclusions are in writing, not just agreed to verbally. Remember whilst your new home project is the only one for you, the builder may have many other clients. Most builders can allow for you to perform some

of the works yourself to help save some dollars but there are some works that are best kept with your builder as they may affect the structural integrity of your home or your overall home construction warranty . Examples of some of these are tiling to wet areas, external wall painting and sealing, structural retaining walls and site works. Building your new home is an exciting time so take some time to choose which builder you will use and make sure they are experienced.

There’s no doubt that Cairns is blessed to be at the heart of a natural oasis. We have access to one of the best playgrounds in the world surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef, rainforests, waterfalls, and tablelands. It’s our responsibility to do our parts to preserve the natural wonders at our backyard.

Commercial household cleaners are laden with hundreds of toxic chemicals that can be harmful to you, your family, and our cherished environment.

Banish toxic chemicals, and opt for easy and budget friendly homemade solutions. A few simple ingredients from the pantry can be used as for effective eco-friendly cleaning.

White Vinegar Vinegar is the all-purpose cleaner that really does do it all. It’s a natural antibacterial, degreaser, streak-free glass and bathroom cleaner. When diluted with at least equal parts water to vinegar, this simple solution is safe to use on most surfaces, floors, wood, metal and tile. Just avoid using it on marble, and beware that if the solution is too acidic, it may eat away at tile grout. Use it full strength in the bathroom to cut through soap scum, mildew, and mineral deposits. Don’t worry about your home smelling like vinegar, as the smell will dissipate once dry. Vinegar also does double duty in the laundry. A ½ cup added to laundry replaces skin-irritating fabric softeners, and rids your washer of any musty odours. Lemons Lemon juice is tougher than vinegar on soap scum and mineral deposits. Try dipping lemon halves in course salt, and use to scrub away sink and bath stains. Toss a lemon wedge into the kitchen garbage disposal to rid smells from built up gunk. Bi-carbonate of soda It’s not just for baking. This natural abrasive packs tough scrubbing and deodorizing power. Sprinkle it on carpets, in laundry, garbage cans and smelly shoes to get rid of offensive odours. An open pack stored in the fridge will absorb food odour. Use it to scour away grimy messes, and combine with vinegar for extra tough stain removal. Having a hard time scrubbing last night’s dinner

CairnsLife

off your pots and pans? Bring 1cm of water to a boil, sprinkle in bi-carbonate of soda, and let simmer for a few minutes. Stubborn stuck on messes will easily scrape away with a spatula. Save the reef ! Instead of dumping poisonous chemicals down the pipes and into our precious waters, try this method to tackle smelly and clogged drains: Pour a heaping scoop of bi-carbonate of soda into the drain, followed by vinegar, activating the duo’s cleansing power. Let it sit for a few minutes, then pour a bucket of hot water to rinse the drain. Homemade Scrubbing paste Make a heavy duty scrubbing paste by combining course salt, vinegar, lemon juice and bi-carbonate of soda. This is great for oven cleaning and extra tough jobs. Spread the paste over the surface, and leave it overnight. The grime will easily scrape away with a spatula. Then polish to a shine with a wet cloth. Natural disinfectant spray This disinfectant spray effectively sterilizes and freshens anywhere in your home. Fill a clean spray bottle with sterile water (boiled & cooled), 30mL of vodka, and 20-30 drops any of pure essential oil. Combine your favourite scents and enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. Pure essential oils are naturally anti-bacterial and some even ward off pests. A combination of clove and peppermint oil will naturally repel cockroaches and ants in your home. The comforting smell of lavender oil not only melts stress, but also wards off bed bugs. Spritz over bedding to sleep with ease.

Hot T ips for Building a

‘Cool’ Home in the Tropics! Plan your house to take full advantage of the prevailing breeze using large window and door openings.

Help your bank balance and the environment by installing solar panels! A short-term and long-term investment for all!

Heat rises, so high ceilings can make a big difference. Venting this hot air via an apex in the room roof and sufficient openings around the eaves will also aid hot air to escape.

A wide roof overhang helps to block the sun from the windows, doors and walls & prevents rain from entering. Keeping the sun off walls also reduces heat build up in the home.

Use energy efficient lighting. Hot to touch lighting is wasting energy and heating the interior of your home.

Maximize airflow through your home via open plans. This will assist strong cross ventilation.

Fit insulation in the roof and walls where possible. The higher the R-value the better the result.

Design your home to keep living areas on the eastern side of your home.

Embrace natural light through windows. Sunlight is free!

Use light colours for external surfaces.

With finances in order after the end of financial year, it’s time to bring order to the home. Yes, we’re talking the dreaded O word, organisation. Braving that clutter you’ve neglected will end up saving you time, and ease your mind. It’s time to make your home a welcoming place, not a chaotic one.

Use these simple tips to help de-clutter and organise your home.

save? Most things probably don’t hold as much sentimental value as you think. Evaluate items for practicality. If you’re not using it, it needs to go.

One at a Time Don’t overwhelm yourself by taking on too much. Nobody is expecting you to magically transform your home in an instant. Aim to tackle one room at a time. Give yourself time over several weeks. One room per week is plenty.

Categorize Store like things together, assigning designate places for every item. Use smaller storage baskets for everyday items so they are easily found. Store anything you don’t need on a weekly basis in stackable plastic storage containers to save space.

Utilize Space Wisely Walls and doors are often underutilized. Wall mounts, hooks and shelving are great for hanging, decorative storage and displays. Invest in over-the-door hangers for handy hanging space for towels, clothing, and accessories. Downsize Less is more. Simplify your home life by getting rid of unnecessary items. Imagine your house is burning, what would you

Smart Storage There is a multitude of smarter storage solutions available for all needs. Look online for ideas that suit you. Pinterest is a brilliant source for inspiration and clever tips.

Check Dates You wouldn’t trust expired food, but there are other expiry dates you should be aware of. Check the expiry dates on old prescriptions and vitamins. As chemical components break down over time, it isn’t safe to keep them past expiry. Toss old makeup and facial products. Microorganisms can build up over time on makeup. If you haven’t used it in a year, bin it. Most facial products expire within six to 12 months from the day they are opened. Efficacy

of products diminishes as ingredients break down once exposed to oxygen. Check the labels. Closets Time to face that monster in the closet. Closets are notorious grounds for textile chaos. Downsizing and organizing your wardrobe can save precious time getting dressed every day. Follow these easy steps to bring order to your closet: Be ruthless – Hold no mercy. If you don’t love it, get rid of it. If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to part. Aim to purge 50 per cent.

Use a category system – Sort clothing by category. Do you really need 10 pairs of shorts? Or those 20 shirts? Make piles of what you want to keep, sell, or donate. Invest in good hangers – Wire hangers from the dry cleaner are a nightmare. Quality wood, padded and plastic hangers will ensure easy hanging, and keep clothes shape. Don’t overcrowd hangers to make finding items easier. Style go-to outfits – We tend to have favourites

and wear the same outfits. Style several key outfits, hanging them together to make getting dressed in the mornings easier.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING.... the new black

Recently one of my clients told me a story about how she found herself chasing a school bus with a forgotten watermelon in hand. This was not just a funny story but an apology, as only two days prior she had vented her rage to me about the stupidity of having to jog with a weight plate during a tough group training session. Alas, through those few moments of watermelon running my explanation as to the benefits of Functional Training was brought to light. The benefits truly are vast. You can achieve anything you want when training functionally, including being able to catch the school bus while running with a watermelon! By choosing a variety of functional tools and selecting the right exercises, combinations and loads for your goals, the majority of the major health and fitness goals can be achieved. Functional training is a classification of exercise which involves training the body for the activities performed in everyday life. We use functional training to: • Achieve a metabolic training effect which helps us strip body fat and get lean; • Get an intense cardio workout which will help improve our aerobic and anaerobic energy systems; • Train for a specific sport; • Build strength and muscle mass; • Help prevent and rehabilitate injuries; • Improve posture; and • Work with anyone, from the complete beginner to older client or an athlete. Functional Training is not new and won’t be disappearing anytime soon. We have been moving this way for many years; it is just now that people have put a name to it. As the general public learn of the benefits of Functional Training we are only going to see more growth in this area. More and more people will incorporate Functional Training into their daily fitness regime as they begin to understand the overall benefits and the fun way in which you can train. It’s a very exciting future and Genesis Fitness Cairns is leading the way. Our newly renovated Lake Street club is now home to the biggest functional training centre of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Our centre incorporates small group PT sessions that include Synrgy, XFit, Mash, TRX and kettle bells. Genesis members continue to have plenty of variety, getting a far greater experience from their club, which is what it’s all about. So if you aren’t already, start training functionally, the experience is a fun one and you never know when you might be chasing a school bus with a watermelon!

Hairdresser

of the month How long have you been hairdressing for?

Whats the most challenging style you have ever had to do?

What inspired you to become a Hairdresser?

What is your greatest strength as a Hairdresser?

What gave you the courage to open up your own salon?

How would you describe your personal style?

I have been qualified for 6 years since moving to Queensland, but have been hairdressing with my mum part time in her salons in Victoria since I was 10 years old.

My mum ... she has been hairdressing for over 40 years and has such a huge loyal clientele and seeing her clients always so happy when they walk out the door leaves such a good feeling. So I have grown up in the hairdressing industry and its the one job I feel so happy to wake up of a morning and go to. They say if you love what you do you never really have to work a day in your life, and I’m telling you ...its true.

Great supportive family, friends and clients. I am always looking at new ways to challenge myself, eager to learn so much.

What is your favourite style?

I love asymmetrical styles in cuts. I also love braids and twists in upstyles.

How do you keep up on style trends?

I attend regular fashion shows and creative hair courses to keep up to date with the current styles.

What is the most popular cut right now?

Short layered styles with a smooth fringe. Layered bobs are starting to take over concave bobs. Can be edgy and funky yet classy.

Trying to do a neat 5 strand braid on a flower girl who was 4 years old and interested in looking at everything happening around her. Ha ha.

I am a great listener which is one of the most important skills to have as a hairdresser. Communication will get you the right cut/style every time. So many new clients talk of their experiences with other hairdressers who have not communicated properly resulting in unhappy non-returning clients. It makes my day to see my clients happy and smiling so listening and excellent communication is a key strength I have.

Unique. I really love to work with clients and their personalities. People who have had the same cut or colour that’s not suited for their profile or personality. There is nothing more satisfying than giving them the right cut, colour and style and seeing their eyes pop and a grin from ear to ear. Life mission is to keep people smiling.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why? South Pacific. Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands. I have always had an attraction to beach life and culture and have always felt a connection with these islands.

LET CAIRNSLIFE MAKE YOU UP by

MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design

With Joanne’s Hair we needed to remove a lot of thickness and create a feminine stylish cut rather than just a short cut. We set about removing lots of length and thickness creating something different for Joanne. By cutting in short and wispy, then sweeping the hair over from the short side to the other created a longer chip & flick side for a funky asymmetrical modern cut.

Colour Specialist

With a starting point of white roots, brown mid band and Black ends a complete overhaul was needed. So with Joanne’s Colour we started by filtering some highlights around the face and down into our extended side, then a lighter base colour was added with a frosting technique over the top to finish off. This took Joanne 4 shades lighter with added texture and removed the over coloured blackened effect of the past.

Make Up Artistry

We started by shaping, sculpting and tinting Joanne’s eyebrows for a great start. With Joanne’s Make-up we wanted to keep it nice and simple, we evened and highlighted the skin, then softly lifted the eyes to brighten and soft gloss and blush to finish.

BREAST TO M OSYNTHESIS ( 3 D M A M M OGRA P HY )

By Dr Kevin Daynes, Radiologist | Cairns Women’s Imaging

Cairns Women’s Imaging, a specialist and leader in the field of women’s imaging services is proud to announce the introduction of Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammography). Tomosynthesis is a revolutionary breast cancer screening and diagnostic tool that can be done in conjunction with current digital mammography. This is a major advance for the early detection of breast cancer and also helps in reducing false alarms. Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer in women worldwide. To successfully treat breast cancer, you first need to find it. Early detection and reliable diagnosis by a highly experienced breast radiologist are key elements to survival. Equally important is the type of x-ray equipment used to perform the studies. Breast tomosynthesis is the latest breakthrough in mammography and brings a new level of confidence to breast cancer detection and diagnosis especially for small cancers. It provides a clearer, more accurate view of the breast and allows doctors to more effectively pinpoint the size and location of any abnormality. This can lead to better detection, fewer call backs and biopsies and greater peace of mind. What is Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)? Breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography is different from a standard 2D digital mammogram as it takes multiple pictures of the breast from many angels. These pictures are then combined which form a three dimensional rendering of the entire breast allowing experienced radiologists to examine the breast tissue one layer at a time. Although 2D digital mammography is still state of the art technology, 3D mammography is a giant step forward to detecting breast cancers. How is Breast Tomosynthesis done and what is the radiation dose? The examination is done in the same way and in conjunction with a standard mammogram (sometimes with less pressure applied) and only takes approximately 5 seconds longer than the standard mammogram. As tomosysthesis is done along with your standard mammogram, the radiation dose is low and overall, may decrease in some women as the need for additional mammographic views is reduced with tomosynthesis.

Bend It Like ...PEYRONIE? Peyronie’s Disease is a curvature of the penis. It was first described by a Frenchman, Francois Gigot de la Peyronie who described it in 1743. It may occur after damage to the penis (usually a buckling injury) or may occur spontaneously. It is not really a “disease” in the true sense of the word. It is the formation of scar tissue within the penis which can sometimes affect a man’s ability to direct his urinary stream and may prevent a normal erection or may cause the erection to be bent. This may be in any direction and sometimes if severe may result in a “twist”. This can also result in shortening of the penis. As a result an erection may be painful and intercourse may cause pain for the man or his partner and sometimes is not possible at all. Because it is made up of “scar” tissue it may get better by itself but this may take a year to happen as the tissue “matures”. Unfortunately there are no specific medications which have a significant ability to promise a “cure”. There are many sites on the internet which offer promises which are usually unfulfilled. There do not appear to be any creams or specific mechanical straightening devices which offer a reliable, scientifically tested method of improvement despite the costs of these devices. Some vitamins have been recommended in the past but recent testing has failed to show

significant benefit. Some injections of a substance in to the scar tissue is sometimes effective but this requires a number of injections over many weeks and does not appear to be reliable. So that leaves surgery. There are a number of operations which are usually carried out in day surgery where the penis can be straightened. There are various techniques. In some of them the scar tissue is removed and a “tissue graft” inserted but as healing takes place by the formation of scar tissue they may not always be effective. Another technique is to take a “tuck” in the side opposite the scarring rather like dress making so it is then straight. Occasionally, if the curvature is accompanied by an inability to get an erection, a penile prosthesis is necessary. This is an artificial erection device which is contained entirely in the body which can give an erection and straighten the penis at the same time.

Peyronie’s Disease • Formation of scar tissue within the penis • May affect a man’s ability to direct his urinary stream • May prevent a normal erection or may cause the erection to be bent • May result in shortening of the penis.

Learning in the fast lane

AFE students from across North Queensland will put their training into action at the Castrol Townsville 500 this month. Under the tagline ‘Driven by TAFE Queensland’, apprentice mechanics; business, hospitality and events students, and those studying PR, Digital Marketing will all have their skills put to the test during the three-day event from July 4 to 6. It’s just one example of the real-world experiences offered by TAFE Queensland North in celebrating the ‘doers’ in life. It’s the first major collaboration following the amalgamation of Tropical North, Barrier Reef and Mt Isa Institutes of TAFE – with all 17 campuses from the Whitsundays to Thursday Island now operating under the banner of TAFE Queensland North. General Manager Joann Pyne says the new direction will open more learning opportunities and employment pathways for the people of North Queensland. “The three institutes are now working as one, so instead of doing things three times over, we do it once, and we do it well, and that’s freed up funding for new products and technology to improve the way we deliver our services,” says Joann. “It also means people have more choices and better outcomes for good jobs or further studies. The people we have at TAFE really are the doers of the community – the people who keep the economy going. And as the economy of Cairns and surrounds starts to grow, we want to make sure our communities have the relevant skills to take advantage of the great opportunities coming up.” TAFE Queensland North has entered an exciting new era, with TAFE Queensland increasing its product development spend of $4-million last year to a staggering $10-million investment in 2014. TAFE Queensland North is also developing its relationship with Papua New Guinea, providing higher education and training in the local communities. “We are finally getting to do some things we have wanted to do for a long time,” says Joann. “We are delivering some of the best material across the state, not only of a consistent standard, but also brilliant quality. “We also have students from PNG travelling here, and our staff delivering training up there. The Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Trade Queensland have worked really hard to help us build these relationships and make the most of the opportunities that exist. “I absolutely love my job, mainly because every day I get to see the amazing achievements of our students.”

Joann Pyne

TAFE Queensland North wishes all students an enjoyable and successful learning experience at the Castrol Townsville 500 – Driven by TAFE Queensland.

s Cairns prepares for an exciting new future of construction, tourism and business opportunities, new skills are needed. The College of Australian Training is answering that call, expanding its course offerings in Cairns to include qualifications in Tourism, Retail, Business and Customer Contact. The new scope adds to the college’s well-established hospitality and hairdressing training, which includes apprenticeships, traineeships and school-based training as well an operational hair dressing salon in Spence Street, College Cuts. The expansion has also created employment, with new lecturers and staff already on board, and recruitment continuing. Sales and marketing manager Leigh-Ann Dryden said the College was also working alongside job service providers and creating new partnerships to maximise employment outcomes for students. “Our focus is on helping the local community obtain new qualifications and delivering that in a flexible way that works best for them.” The College of Australian Training delivers face-to-face learning at 35 locations across Queensland, as well as online courses. The college also works closely with local schools to place students in workplaces and can tailor training packages to suit individual employers. In the past 12 months, a total of 975 students have successfully completed

Leigh-Ann says the college also specialises in creating opportunities for people with disabilities. “We work alongside with ARC Disability Cairns and have invited their clients to our College Cuts salon for a day of pamper with a hair wash and style,” says Leigh-Ann. “Now we have asked them to be our models for a fashion show using recycled hair pieces and clothing and the completed works will be presented at the Cairns Show.”

ervicing major mining clients in Australia and Papua New Guinea, Dave Thomson identified Cairns as an ideal base for his specialised recruitment and training company. Eight years later, Smart Staff International provides training material development, labour placement and workplace safety systems to the mining, mineral processing, industrial and utilities industries throughout Australia and overseas. “The business was started in Darwin but I saw an opportunity to move it here and it proved to be a better fit,” Dave says. “We had a lot of FIFO work in mining sites in PNG, so it just made sense. Additionally Cairns is an excellent base to travel from around Australia with so many flights available.” Locally, small businesses can take advantage of Smart Staff International’s help with occupational health and safety program management. The company also offers regulation compliance support, particularly helpful for businesses needing to meet industry requirements for subcontracting and tenders. But Dave says what really makes the service unique is the experienced staff. “All of the people we have involved, be they working on sites or developing training material or safety systems, have industry specific backgrounds,” he says. “The people developing the material have had to apply it themselves or work within these same organisations previously. “Because they have used the systems before, they are able to create practical workplace solutions, not approach the implementation of a training or safety system purely from a theoretical basis. They know exactly what’s going to work for each organisation.”

Smart Staff International has eight full time staff and 40 employees working in various sites across the country and abroad. For more information or current vacancies visit www.smartstaffinternational.com Smart Staff International Pty Ltd (SSI) continually seeks opportunities to improve performance and provide high quality practical workplace systems for our clients. aking a career transition with the help of a professional such as Vanine Gilmore of Worklife Directions is the first step to a bright future. Vanine is the founder and director of Worklife Directions, which specialises in career transition and outplacement programs for organisations in Cairns and Townsville, as well as providing career development coaching for individuals. “It’s important we enjoy the work we do, which has a positive impact on our health and wellbeing,” says Vanine. “Making a career or job change can be challenging at any time, and very daunting if it involves redundancy. “Recently, due to economic conditions a number of organisations downsizing their workforce have contacted me to assist employees whose jobs have been made redundant, or who are still working with the organisation and will be retrenched soon.

“My aim is to get them through this transition period as smoothly as possible and assist them to find a new position that aligns with their skills, interests and motivations. “Initially this involves helping those employees through counselling and managing change, then conducting career assessments, looking at resumes and marketing tools, coaching in relevant job search strategies, such as job advertisements, employment agencies, targeting organisations, and networking”. “We also coach in interview techniques to ensure they are properly prepared for securing the best job.” “This transitional period can be much like a grieving process, because at the time it’s difficult to see ahead. I really enjoy seeing their eyes light up and their whole persona change when they finally see the opportunities before them and that the world is their oyster!”.” Vanine says once economic conditions improve she is looking

forward to devoting more time to the career development area, workplace counselling, and human resources – ideally working with smaller companies who need advice and a hands-on approach in this area. She would also like to dedicate more time to her ongoing work with the Australian Defence Force, helping those who have had a medical discharge begin a new career direction. With beautiful views of Trinity Inlet, the Hilton is renowned as the ideal venue for mixing business with pleasure while taking in the vibrant tropical surrounds. The Hilton Cairns delivers a distinct “wow factor” with a versatile range of venues including tropical private gardens, waterfront and alfresco terraces, meeting rooms and exhibition space. The unique function spaces can easily cater for any style of event from intimate gatherings, cocktail functions, conferences and gala events to up to 350 guests. The chic and modern décor of the Grand Ballroom lends itself to any style of theming and is complimented by the unique LED ceiling lighting which can be easily customised to enhance any event.

“We are really spoilt for choice at the Hilton Cairns. The Hotel has one of the region’s largest and most contemporary meeting spaces, surrounded by impressive outdoor venues with water views, cool ocean breezes and tropical ambience,” says Elise. “Because the success of an event cannot be based on venue alone, we understand the importance of understanding and delivery on client expectations.” “We are proud to say that our venue is known for its high quality and creative catering solutions and we work closely with our talented Executive Chef to produce menus and theming that will delight guests.” Katie adds that the new pre-Christmas and festive holiday packages for the Hilton have just been finalised and she is eager to see them released. Given the high demand for social and Christmas functions at the end of the year, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of some fantastic early bird specials and secure your event. “I am excited to announce that the Hilton Cairns Traditional Tastes package, starting from $59.00 per person, includes a delicious buffet menu prepared by Executive Chef Lionel Boyce, exclusive use of the venue of your choice, and Christmas themed decorations,” says Katie. “The buffet will boast a variety of sumptuous salad combinations, a charcuterie station with select cold cuts and condiments, hot carvery choices of wagyu beef, roast turkey breast, pasta and vegetables and a dessert selection that, of course, must include traditional Christmas pudding. An optional three hour beverage package is also available for those looking to add some additional “Christmas cheer” to their event. “There are also many other options available to make your Christmas or social event memorable and we are happy to work on a customised solution which best suits your function and guests.” The Hilton Cairns is a Tourism Tropical North Queensland Luxury Accommodation and Sustainable Tourism Award winner. As part of its commitment to sustainability, measures have been implemented throughout the hotel to monitor water and energy efficiency. History in the making at

Cairns Regional Gallery

By Michelle Dryburgh

THE STORIES OF CAPE YORK WILL BE RETOLD THROUGH ART AT A NEW EXHIBITION AT CAIRNS REGIONAL GALLERY.

G

round: New Intaglio Works from Western Cape York is a collection of 40 etchings by indigenous artists from remote communities across the Cape. Two years in the making, the exhibition of works was completed during workshops at Mapoon, Napranum, Weipa, Aurukun and Pormpuraaw. It is the first print survey of the region and a historically significant milestone for Wei’Num – an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and crafts corporation. Arts Centre Manager Charles Street said the Western Cape region was better known for its totemic three-dimensional carvings and Ghost Net Sculptures, but little was known about printed works on paper. “Num Print School was developed by Wei’Num to collate and document the region’s growing printmaking sector, introducing new artists to audiences who are on the cusps of breaking into the broader Indigenous Arts Market,” he said. “This is really a milestone in terms of documenting and recording this type of artwork. We are excited to be able to bring this to the people of Cairns and hopefully educate people on the region’s diversity and cultural identity.” Wei’Num is also launching a new and interactive website this month to coincide with the exhibition and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, July 25-27. Charles said the group was focused on engaging more people in art practices as well as informing the public about life in the Cape. “Using digital media platforms, we are able to bring images and information about some of our most remote, isolated communities into people’s homes and hands,” he said.

81

“The website will use maps, profiles and video footage to give people more understanding about each of these communities, their individual landscapes, values and way of life, and provide some insight into how the artworks represent that.” Wei’Num print artworks are available to view or purchase on the website www.weinumarts.com.au and at Shardworks Mosaic Design on Scott Street, Cairns. About Wei’Num Wei’Num’s vision is to empower indigenous artists to take ownership of their individual arts businesses and to create economic certainty for themselves and their families. Wei’Num delivers arts and craft based business and professional development opportunities for artists living in Western and Northern Cape York. Wei’Num also supports the growth and recognition of the arts as an important industry, which has the capacity to provide education and training opportunities in arts practice and business, economic growth, cultural maintenance and retention, employment, and community engagement and pride. The creative art of tattoos is at the heart of Obsession Ink. Established four years ago, Obsession Ink continues to offer a point of difference in traditional and custom tattooing, as well as hand poked tattoos. According to owner Michelle Peter, who bought the business in November 2013, the success of Obsession Ink has attracted the attention of world body modification expert Samppa Von Cyborg, who visits the studio as guest artist once a year. “I think it’s also about Obsession Ink’s relaxed environment and our team’s passion for what we do and can achieve for our clients,” says Michelle. “Chris has been with Obsession since it first opened, and Jamie joined the crew in December

last year. We have just added an apprentice – Darcie, six weeks ago, so the team has grown.” “This is great for our clients who can tap into our team’s diversity as artists.” “Generally our clientele is a good mix of tourists and locals varying in age. “Some clients only have a vague idea of what they are looking for. This is when consultations between the artist and client are important in helping their ideas evolve.” “Consultations are beneficial so the artists can ensure the design, size, and placement is exactly what the client wants to achieve.” “Price is determined on these factors - size, placement and the complexity of the design. Customers are often bargain hunters, and it is up to the tattoo artist to explain the safety

precautions taken and experience they have which explains the price charged.” “When customers understand a higher price sometimes means no shortcuts are being taken, they may feel more comfortable and price becomes less of a concern. Of these concerns, price is more of a concern for tattoo newbies than collectors.” “Obsession Ink understands how important the tattoo is to the client and provides excellent consultation, quality work, and after care advice.” “The most important thing a client can do is research to make sure the design and style of the tattoo is what they want.” Give us a call today to book your consultation on 40315534.

Colourful, charismatic and contemporary, UnderArt Gallery is quintessentially Cairns and the embodiment of its founder, iefje Boissevain. Inside the Spence Street gallery you’ll find an eclectic mix of vibrant artworks by iefje and adiverse mix of other local artists. The abstract and contemporary works include paintings, resin clocks and tiles, sculptures made of clay and even paper, and a vast silver jewellery collection ranging from quirky and fun to elegant and sophisticated. The gallery is a refreshing, bright and cheery space, lifting the spirits of anyone and everyone who walks through the doors. The ever-changing collection ensures no two visits are ever the same. “There’s always something new in the gallery, and a lot of different styles,” says iefje. “I get a lot of knocks on my door, so I can only select what I believe I can sell. It’s nice to be surrounded by work that is happy, rather than conveying a heavy political or religious message.” Unlike many galleries, there’s no featured artist of the month, and no prints. Instead, UnderArt showcases only originals by a variety of artists, seamlessly blended together. “I very deliberately mix everything up, although not as far as to make a minestrone soup,” laughs iefje. “That way, if one particular artist’s work doesn’t appeal to someone, there’s usually something else they will love.” And love they do – with iefje’s work hanging prominently in offices and homes throughout Cairns, and many more sold interstate and internationally. iefje’s own art practice has undergone a transition in recent months, moving from the usual canvas to working on plywood.

Always experimenting with new techniques and textures, she says the stronger surface provides more creative freedom. “It allows me to cut, grind and drill into the surface,” she adds “I like to use sand, fabric, resin, papers, compounds, even small fossils, pumice, driftwood, anything really, and of course paints. “I’m really enjoying experimenting with different techniques and mediums to create something new and a bit off-beat.” And that’s a fitting description of iefje’s style. Just like her artwork and her gallery, she is full of colour, inspiration and life. “In the earlier days I was inspired by the amazing American artist, Mark Rothko. He is best known as one of the central figures of the Abstract Expressionist movement in American art in the 1950s and ‘60s,” says Iefje. “Rothko believed ‘art is an adventure into an unknown world’. Although my work is nothing like his, I guess I have been influenced in some way and I love his quote!” So what inspires iefje Boissevain today? “I feel I always do my best work when I have time to myself, without distraction – except for good music and a glass of red, or two,” she smiles. “And the support of my local clients certainly keeps me going. I am always grateful to see a familiar face in the gallery.” iefje invites visitors to view the collection at: UnderArt Gallery Shop 4, 12 Spence Street, Cairns. Open 7 days. www.underart.com.au

Vibrant & Unique...UnderArt Gallery, established in 2009 by iefje Boissevain, accomplished Cairns artist. She shares her eclectic space with many emerging and established local artists. The gallery also has a fabulous collection of sterling silver jewellery in a wide range of prices and styles. Locals have noticed something extraordinary in the Cairns Northern Beaches area with the recent opening of Clint and Jasmine Westernhagen’s new Lemongrass on Clifton restaurant. The local couple - both well-known chefs, have emerged from a six year hiatus in the hospitality industry to bring a fresh and distinctive flair to Modern Australian cuisine with an Asian influence at Clifton Beach. Near the beach on Clifton Beach Road, the restaurant’s intimate and relaxed ambience makes it the perfect choice for an evening of fine food, and good old-fashioned service, whether it’s a table for two or a group of friends catching up over a meal. “Many Cairns locals will remember our former Lemongrass restaurant in Stratford, which we operated for nine years,” says Clint. “It was a very successful venture catering for a loyal clientele; and we received some great accolades such as the Catering Institute’s Best Restaurant of the Year Award, and special commendation from celebrity chef Geoff Jansz, who gave us a huge plug to 400 people attending a conference in Cairns after dining at our restaurant.”

Clint and Jasmine Westernhagen

“We worked long, hard hours and truly enjoyed the experience, yet with three young children we decided to take a break and dedicate time to them.” “With the kids now older, we feel it’s time to get back in and start afresh doing what we love.” Clint adds that both he and Jasmine are excited about the restaurant’s Clifton Beach location and the opportunity to focus on a menu that fully utilises their talent as chefs. When asked about a Lemongrass signature dish, Clint advises there are actually two. “The twice cooked lamb shanks have always been a featured dish for us – a dish that continues to rank highly,” he says. “Yet our slow roasted ducking on saffron and cashew pilaf rice with coriander, lychees and a mild Thai red curry sauce is really a statement of our passion for creative flair and ensuring a memorable dining experience.” July will see Lemongrass on Clifton open for breakfast, in addition to dinner Tuesday through Saturday. 20 years after the launch of the iconic Peugeot 205 GTi, the passion and the legend are back! The New Peugeot 208 GTi is the modern incarnation of the legendary original hot hatch; the 205 GTi. It retains the same unbridled sense of fun, direct steering and road-holding that made the original a classic along with the levels of comfort and safety demanded of a modern day car. 208 GTi is a competitively priced, ultra responsive, driver focused sports car that promises an engaging performance drive. With its bold lines, dynamic interior and powerful performance, this is a car that clearly demonstrates its character and ambition. From the outside, The 208 GTi makes an immediate impression that turns heads and makes reference to the 208 GTi’s racing pedigree. Defined by a three-door body style, it’s sporty stance sits on a 10mm widened track at the front and 20mm widened track at the rear. The distinctive headlight signature of the face of this car is refined by halogen headlamps and LED technology for the directional indicators and daytime running lights. These frame a cleverly designed, distinctive 3D grille that resembles a chequered flag. Bodywork components enhance the overall sports feel with 17inch alloy wheels that hug the arches along with unique body sills and wing extensions. The overall exterior look is enhanced by striking red Peugeot lettering at the top of the grille, ‘GTi’ badging and touches of bright chrome and red around the car. Opening the door you can’t help but say ‘WOW!’. The contemporary, striking dark colour scheme is brought to life by dynamic red highlights that create unique GTi theming. Red stitching is used throughout the interior, on the seats, seatbelts, handbrake, dashboard, floor mats and the perforated leather steering wheel and adds to the luxurious yet sporty feeling. Racing red also blazes from around the instrument dials, the gearstick insert, and graduated colouring from red to black is on

the door cross bars and the surrounds. The driver and passenger are well supported by the sports bucket seats that are a combination of full grain Club Nappa leather with Caro Weave cloth and bold red design accents. But it does not end there. Popping the bonnet reveals the heart of this nimble beast. The 1.6 THP engine powering the 208 GTi was awarded the coveted 2013 International Engine of the Year prize for the 7th year in a row. The pairing of this award-winning 1.6 THP 147kW petrol engine, a six-speed close ratio manual gearbox, and a reworked exhaust line and a light weight chassis of only 1,160kg, the 208 GTi exudes power from the very start. In fact it powers from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds and is assured to put a smile on any ones face. With a comprehensive list of standard features including a 7-inch entertainment touch screen, satellite navigation, 17” alloy wheels, sports seats, LED daytime running, lights, cruise control and bluetooth connectivity, all you have to do is pick your favourite colour. Backed by 3 years/100,000klm warranty, 3 years roadside assist and 5 years/75,000klm capped price servicing and priced from $34,990 drive away the Peugeot 208 GTi is a sure fire winner.

Dogs play a crucial role in enriching our lives. With a strong emphasis on our own fulfilment it is easy to neglect the simple requirements which enhance the life of your canine companion. Have you ever wondered what is really important to your dog? We lavish them with toys, provide designer bedding and adorn them in canine clothing and accessories. They are massaged, have regular grooming appointments and attend doggy day-care sessions to play with friends. Does all of this really mean canine contentment? How do we establish a lifestyle with our dog that incorporates basic training, personal enjoyment, mutual affection and individual satisfaction? We become overwhelmed with a myriad of ideas and techniques when for most of us the basic ideals of dog ownership remain the same. Identify the breed of your dog and implement a way of life that is relevant to their genetic

ancestry. What does your dog need to complement their emotional and physical requirements? Different temperaments and energy levels should also be considered when we are working on improving the life of our dog. Consistency and commitment to a regular exercise program is crucial and contributes towards keeping your dog calm and emotionally balanced. Your daily walk should follow a similar route and then intermittently introduce different locations for additional stimulation. Provide a variety of different activities in the home environment encouraging them to use all of their senses which stimulates their mind. Establish boundaries relevant to the way you want to live with your dog. A structured routine around the home provides security and results in a more relaxed and contented companion. Time on their own enables them to accept your absence and assists

in avoiding unwanted behaviour such as excessive barking and escaping. Basic obedience training stimulates your dog mentally and physically. Giving our dogs a task to perform enables us to reward them at the most relevant time. Affection that follows this type of interaction is more significant and imprints commands that are relevant to life in our world. The life of a happy dog is based on simple ideals, exercise, food, shelter, water and regular interaction. We complicate their lives with our own emotions which so often contributes too many of the behavioural problems we see in the modern day canine. About Shane Tibbs & Associates Shane Tibbs & Associates was established by Shane in 1987. After originally joining the Financial Services Industry with SGIO in 1981 Shane felt there was a need for Financial Planning advice that locals could access. His mantra was advice for everyone, not just for those with large portfolios. Everyone’s money and financial state is important to them. It shouldn’t be just for those who can afford it the most.

S

hane says ‘What I hear most people say to me is, “if only I had come to see you earlier, I thought it was very expensive to see a Financial Planner”. People are busy doing what they do and can’t be expected to know what the opportunities are to achieve financial success, Shane says. Understanding what a balanced investment portfolio should be and how to construct it, making changes to it as investment conditions change, accessing benefits that are available, ensuring assets and funds are passed on to intended love ones with the least amount of tax/duties/costs are all part of sound financial planning. Shane says if clients need specialised legal or accounting assistance this can be identified and referred to the right people. It’s extremely satisfying to see clients in as good a financial position as they can be, after they get professional management of their affairs, Shane say’s. Financial Planning is different for everyone. No two clients are the same. They all have their own wants, goals and set of circumstances, so no one plan fits all. It’s just doesn’t work that way. Most people look to retire around 60. Recently I had a gentleman come to see me at 75 years old and says “I think I’m ready to retire” Fantastic isn’t it. We are all unique. Many clients are surprised to find out we use many products and services and not just from Suncorp. Yes as financial planners we must be licenced and we are with Suncorp Financial Services Pty Ltd but this does not restrict us. If another superannuation product or investment Funds suits a client better…..we use it says Shane.

Shane Tibbs & Associates has a large team of experts ready to help with Wealth creation, superannuation, retirement planning, managed funds, Life insurance and transition to retirement are just some of the financial planning services that Shane and his team can assist with. Financial planning is an important aspect in every stage of life, many people try to get by without any real strategy and leave financial security to chance without realising the true cost. Shane and his staff take the guess work out of the planning process. A 30 minute consultation gets clients on the right road, giving certainty about financial plans and goals. “We care about our clients and put their interests first to ensure their insurance program and financial planning is perfect for them. We ask the right questions so clients can take comfort in knowing they have the right cover at the right time. We stay with clients all the way even through to retirement, step by step, keeping things easy and simple. “ Shane Tibbs & Associates operate 2 offices, one located at 206 Buchan Street, Cairns and the other at 66 Edith Street, Innisfail. Shane and his staff are experts in financial planning and wealth creation from Cardwell to Thursday Island and their local knowledge and relationship based business practise has cemented their reputation for personalised one on one service. The partnership between us and Suncorp provides the perfect environment for peace of mind for clients. It gives the security of knowing clients are dealing with a large organisation but you can sit down face to face with your local financial planner any time it suits.
