When was the last time you patted yourself on the back and said job well done, especially if you are in business for yourself ? Business conversations today always gravitate to discussions about the economy and how well a business is doing financially. Sometimes the conversations are depressing and you leave the meeting a touch down to say the least. In small business you generally go into business with a great idea and somewhere along the lines you end up being a bookkeeper, spending more time with your accountant than your customers. In my good friend’s words (Stephen Borzi) – when was the last time you “stopped and smelt

the roses.” Your business is still about you and your great idea. It’s what you do every day and what people know you for. So this month’s foreword is dedicated to patting you, the small business owner, on the back – “Well done.” In our own business CairnsLife, we move from issue to issue, project to project and spend little time looking at what we have accomplished. Well if you indulge me, I’d like to remind you about some of these successes. In the last 2 years, we have put out 24 magazines, published 5 books, put on an expo and held a food and wine festival. One of our special projects even made the news, Test of Time celebrated businesses that have been going for some period of time in Cairns. (A special mention to congratulate Nick Trompf and his team at the CairnsPost and MacDonnells Law for being one of the oldest Cairns businesses still going strong – well done.) So for all of you feeling a little worried about the times ahead, stop and reflect on you, your business, your friends and family; you’ll be alright, you’re doing ok – well done.

COVER STORY BY STACY WONG

BARBARA HEAD A compassionate role model, leading the modelling industry.

The

cutthroat world of modelling can tear down girls’ selfesteem, but LuLu’s and BLAK Model Management owner Barbara Head is someone who cares about others, not about stepping over them. Since purchasing the agency in 2011, she’s seen the industry change significantly in Cairns, and has used her personal experience within the modelling industry to bring a higher standard of talent to LuLu’s Model Management (LuLu’s). There are now two parts to the company: LuLu’s Model Management, a more localized brand, and recently established BLAK Model Management (BLAK), representing talent as far as Mount Isa. BLAK is aimed at talent pursuing careers outside of Cairns, on national or international levels. “I think the industry has changed since I’ve taken over LuLu’s. It was a free-for-all situation in Cairns before; there were too many inexperienced agencies, and girls kind of floated between assignments and clients, working with whichever agency had an assignment,” says Barbara. Since taking over LuLu’s, Barbara brought better conditions, training and representation for aspiring talent, generating fair pay for assignments and more opportunities for models pursuing serious professional careers. Seeing a gap in tapping the international market, Barbara started BLAK Model Management to bring her agency to a national standard and global level. Her girls were successful locally, but she wanted to expand to give girls the opportunity to pursue credible interstate and international careers.

IF YOU ARE FOCUSED, RELIABLE AND WELLPRESENTED, IT’S POSSIBLE TO GAIN ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL MODEL RIGHT HERE IN CAIRNS. THE MOST DIFFICULT THING HERE HAS BEEN THAT A LOT OPPORTUNITIES WERE BY-PASSING US, LIMITING OUR MODELS CHANCES TO BUILD STRONG PORTFOLIOS.” “Major brands often come to the Cairns region for photo shoots, but they are often on a time limit, paying for creative teams on day rates. They’re unlikely to source local talent; it’s easier to bring their own styling team, photographers, and pre-cast models. With BLAK, we’ve created strong options locally with collaborators to ensure we are not dependant on these circumstances, building strong portfolios and experience for our local girls.” BLAK delivers premier talent for the local, national and international markets. BLAK includes modelling talents as well as creative teams like make-up artists, photographers and styling talents. “Lulu’s is more of a nesting ground for a professional career.

11

CairnsLife

The majority of work opportunities in Cairns are catwalk, casting, then photographic. We fly photographers from interstate to give our talent a different perspective on their portfolios. We have affiliations with a few agencies down south, including Chic Model Management in Sydney – one of the most recognised agencies in Australia – owned by a Ursula Hufnagl.” “This is a nurturing ground for our girls, it’s not our intention to keep them here forever. We have talent who are happy with just a few assignments a year, keeping it as a hobby. But for talent who want to take it a notch higher and pursue modelling careers, we build up their experience as quickly as possible so they are well-prepared to create the best impression when the opportunity is ripe.” “We don’t go un-noticed here in Cairns.” “I was flipping through my emails at home just this week; we had received an email from Park Avenue, a long way from my life in Far North Queensland – the email was from Wilhelmina Models (agents to Iggy Azalea, and one of the largest agencies in New York City) saying they’ve been watching us and would love to have an affiliation. They asked if we could catch up on their next visit to Australia, and invited us to send over portfolios of girls willing to travel.” “We’re certainly not hidden in Far North Queensland as technology allows global far-reaching opportunities; you never know who is watching. I am very proud over all of our achievements.” Barbara’s aim at LuLu’s is to build the self-esteem of the young community through LuLu’s modelling courses, offering not only modelling, but also development and selfimprovement workshops. “Our workshops are targeted towards building healthy relationships and a healthy self-confidence within peer groups to help develop and maintain new tools for our teenagers facing challenges transitioning into the adult world.” “We also work with various schools, councils and local businesses, offering indigenous-specific training modules. Each module can be individually tailored covering various subjects such as: masters of first impressions, homosexual health, personal hygiene in the workplace, general selfimprovement, enhancing and building lasting and healthy friendships – not only at home and in school, but most importantly and often neglected, social etiquette in the workplace” “It’s paramount for us to build women who are strong and confident, who feel good about themselves, and are able to move forward in life, feeling independent and informed; having a strong understanding of exactly who they are.” “No one can judge your past experiences by just looking at you, and it certainly doesn’t determine who you are today, nor will be tomorrow; that is entirely up to you. Our workshops are the perfect arena for us as an agency to have the privileged opportunity to work as a close team, in a oneon-one and often very personal environment to help build strong, young healthy bodies and minds.” “We also teach how to implement planning stages for a clear path in life, goal-setting for the future. At the same time, we encourage young people to remember to work towards a more fulfilling life today.”“Teaching someone to put on makeup just doesn’t cut it. We are intent on creating a clear

and optimistic outlook for our trainees’ futures; this has to include self-improvement. We can always better ourselves. That is probably the very best part of my job, by far.” “It takes a lot of strength to come into this industry and be surrounded by all these amazing talents that are seemingly perfect. But, I think the biggest disillusion of the modelling industry is that you have to be perfect; well you absolutely don’t. Some of the quirkiest looking girls have become exceptionally successful.” Having modelled since she was 14, Barbara has a well-rounded understanding of the industry. After a chance meeting with LuLu’s former owner, she was soon offered a job; within three months of working, the owner offered Barbara the opportunity to purchase the agency. “She loved her girls, and said she had been looking to sell the agency for a while, but she was looking to sell it to somebody who was going to take care of the talent. She needed someone who would take the role on as a nurturing role, rather than just a business and moneymaking opportunity. “ “For young girls to come into a competitive and intimidating industry, it’s important our talent feel nurtured, loved and safe; that’s something I strongly instil in all my people.” “We’re managing a business, our models and staff understand they are not just representing themselves, but the entire team. We are a family here and offer a loving environment; where everyone has to be kind and supportive of each other.” “It really doesn’t matter how cute you are, as long as you’re a nice person. The expectation from our agency is that you are strong enough to have good morals, and are always looking out

for each other as well as our clients branding; it’s a simple sense of professionalism. It’s doesn’t matter how well presented you are arriving for an assignment, if you’re not balanced on the inside, it reflects in everything you do.” Barbara is humanitarian and selfless as she cares equally for everyone around her. She’s not only a mother figure to those at her agencies, but she’s mother to her four children, and currently in the process of fostering her fifth. She is a loving and selfless role model to us all. “I have a blended family, with two children from Ethiopia, so I always strongly encourage multiculturalism and acceptance. It’s important to understand that when you actually strip ones skin, everyone feels the same and bleeds the same; everyone is a human being with feelings, who needs love and a sense of belonging.” “I’m always happy to volunteer my time to help out any cause. We should always inspire and support each other as a community.”

stylists, sexual health educators, nutritionists, media and marketing professionals, and of course our pool of trained talent. We all work towards a united goal of creating the very best commodity we possibly can with local resources, bringing recognition of the diverse and skilled services available in Cairns to the wider national and international markets.” “When it comes to people and managing people, you have to be brutally honest in understanding skill sets, and hiring professionals to fill in the gaps. Then be humble, learn from and encourage others around you.” “In terms of my skill set as a manager, it’s knowing my place as the leader, but also understanding I have to be a friend. I think I am really lucky and have a solid balance between the two.” “I’m available to anyone 24/7 if they ever need help or anyone to talk. I think it’s important to be there for my little community, and to be selfless without expecting anything in return. Sometimes people feel as though they have nothing to give; you have to show them, that little bit they do have to offer is really important to you.”

(Barbara lost her husband to depression four years ago.) “There isn’t anyone who isn’t affected by mental health issues. Whether you are supporting friends, family or team mates. It’s really important to look out for changes in people around you, and not be reactive to their behaviours; you never know what’s going on behind closed doors and the hardships people are suffering in silence.” “My greatest strength during that difficult time was my eldest daughter; she is my hero. Her strength gave me light and inspiration to move forward with confidence.” “Awesome friends and a great community rallied around us at the time, and gave a lot of selfless love and support. I’m eternally grateful to each and every one of them.” Selfless love and support is the basis at Barbara’s agencies. “Everyone is better as a village; we each bring different skills to the table, a completely different perspective on life. The culmination of success in my business is in the strength of my team who support, challenge and encourage my decisions. They are loyal without question, and work hard for the ongoing professionalism of our brand.” “My team comprises of many local contractors and associations made up of make-up artists, hairdressers, fitness instructors, photographers,

“AS AN AGENCY, WE ENCOURAGE ALL OUR GIRLS TO DO THE VERY BEST THEY CAN, AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHO THEY ARE AS PEOPLE; DO GOOD FOR OTHERS. ALONG THE WAY, IF YOU’RE ABLE TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF DOING SOMETHING YOU LOVE, WELL, THAT’S JUST A BONUS.”

ONE CAUSE THAT SHE ADVOCATES STRONGLY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS.

BARBARA’S MANTRA FOR HER OWN MENTAL HEALTH:

• Be grateful and be present in every day. • Go for big walks. • Exhale and enjoy life – “It’s that balance, leading a hectic and busy life; when I get home, I leave it all at the door.”

WHY SHE MOVED HERE AND WHAT SHE LOVES ABOUT CAIRNS: “I can’t think of anywhere else that I’ve lived in Australia where you’ve got 300 plus days a year that you can easily spend outside with your family. It’s just all round a beautiful place to live. The climate is incredible, and the nature is alluring; it’s aesthetically stunning, and simply a brilliant place to bring up children.”

BARBARA’S BEAUTY SECRETS:

• Raspberries, avocadoes, almonds, water, and sleep! • Be happy with yourself – work on your insides; it’s that inner glow that has to come first. • Surround yourself with people who love life, inspire you and make you laugh.

Cairns Finance

Scott Smith

By Michelle Dryburgh

Scott Smith has secured loans for his clients from as little as $5000,to as much as $100-million. But in almost 30 years in the finance industry, his greatest interest has always remained the people and projects behind those dollar signs. “I love this industry because I get to see people improve themselves and achieve their goals,” he says. “In property finance I have seen high-rise constructions built in a year and subdivisions completed in six to eight months, houses going up and families moving in. “Business finance moves a little slower, clients might make improvements over several years, but it’s a great journey to be on. Initially perhaps they want a car or something simple, to move up from renting to investing in property, or to increase their fleet from one or two vehicles to many more.” Scott’s own story is also one of progress and growth. He started his career in finance in Adelaide in 1986, and worked his way up from making coffee for the boss to managing international trade and as the bank’s foreign exchange dealer, before specialising in commercial property lending, investment finance and home loans. He arrived in Cairns in 2002 as a bank lender for commercial property and construction and quickly developed a loyal clientele, but grew frustrated with the limitations of his niche market. Establishing Cairns Finance in 2006 allowed him to help a wider range of clients, and connecting each of them to the right lender has resulted in a consistently high success rate for a diverse range of

13

finance applications. Today his clients include business owners and investors from right across North Queensland seeking residential, business and commercial property finance to start and grow their business, as well as home loans. With interest rates at their lowest levels in his career and promising growth on the horizon for Cairns, Scott says now is a great time to act. “One recent success story is a commercial client who was renting but now owns their property in their self-managed super fund with their repayments almost half of what they were paying in rent which is a fantastic outcome.” “It’s a really exciting time for business in Cairns and there are a lot of business of varying shapes and sizes at a crossroads, just waiting for the next hint of positive news to commit with confidence to even bigger and better things. The residential home loan market is also strengthening with houses selling quickly and a strong level of demand. These are all very encouraging signs.” Scott urges anyone seeking a loan to contact Cairns Finance and discuss their borrowing needs. He says the key to his success is targeting the most suitable lender for each individual, and the results are often surprising. “All banks try to be all things to all people, and they simply can’t be. They have rigid guidelines and often many people simply won’t be successful at obtaining finance without the experience of a broker to steer them to the right lending option. Once we meet with the client and get a clear understanding of their needs to find the right lender for them, the outcome is much more fruitful.”

Joanna Magee AUDiOHEALTH

By Michelle Dryburgh There’s nothing quite like the sound of rain on a tin roof. Or the calls of birds and insects when the rain subsides. Some of us take moments like these for granted, while others wish they could hear such magical sounds. The team at AUDiOHEALTH is dedicated to making that possible, bringing the latest in audiology technology and hearing solutions to the people of Cairns. The family-owned practice was established in Cairns in 2008 by husband and wife John and Joanna Magee. They brought with them more than 20 years’ experience in the industry and a family legacy spanning four decades. Being an independent clinic has allowed AUDiOHEALTH to lead the way in sourcing the best possible hearing solutions from a wide range of manufacturers, improving not only hearing but also the standard of living for people of all ages. Joanna and John are now joined by their daughter Kerry and son Aaron in delivering these services both in Cairns and their newest clinic in Sydney. Following in the footsteps of her father Sidney Bacon, Joanna began her career in audiology healthcare in the early 1980s, working in her father’s practice on weekends while studying. “He had to persuade me. I was the eldest child and a wee bit of a trailblazer and rebel. I didn’t see myself dispensing hearing aids.” It wasn’t long before Joanna realised the powerful impact her father’s work had on the lives of hundreds of patients. “I could see it was a vocation of passion more than a job. And it’s been that way for my father, myself and now my children.” Joanna’s father introduced the first miniature hearing aid to Australia in the 1980s, teaming up with newsreader Ross Symonds to unveil the ‘Invisi’ hearing instrument on national television. Over the next 25 years the once small family business became the largest privately owned group of hearing aid clinics in New South Wales.

14

In 1997 Joanna embarked on her own practice and echoing her father’s pioneering ways, began the latest innovative products. She and John brought the first video otoscope to Australia, enabling patients to see inside their own ear canal and have images sent to their doctors. In 2004, the family founded the Better Hearing Foundation, a nonprofit organisation raising awareness of hearing loss and the available solutions, which has provided hundreds of people in third-world countries with free hearing assistance. The Foundation was launched by Mr Roger Climpson OAM and supported by Professor William Gibson, Dr Phillip Chang and Doctor James Wright. Joanna and John originally moved to Cairns with a view to retire, but their plans were curtailed when they realised the need for quality hearing services. With the help of daughter Kerry, they established the state-of-the-art hearing centre AUDiOHEALTH on Grafton Street in 2008. In 2013, the family re-entered the Sydney market under the management of son Aaron. Joanna said she couldn’t imagine a more exciting, rewarding or satisfying career. “We receive so many letters of thanks from people whose lives have been completely changed by the ability to hear,” she said.

“But even with all the technology and innovation, still the greatest thing I’ve seen is the smiles on the faces of people we help to hear again.” www.audiohealth.com.au

Troy Cummings Locksmith The Key to Your Protection

By Michelle Dryburgh A young child is locked in a parked car. It’s a steamy hot day in Cairns, and a distraught grandmother is begging you to rescue them. It’s a terrifying situation, and one Troy Cummings has found himself in 10 times during his 23 years as a locksmith. “It sends your heart racing, that’s for sure,” says Troy, reminiscing the time he rescued his own goddaughter from a locked car.

“You can plan your day out but it can change in a matter of seconds, and it usually does.” Troy has come to the rescue in lesser emergencies too, freeing people from locked bathrooms, bedrooms and those red-faced customers who’ve locked themselves out of their home or vehicle. “We’ve all been there,” Troy laughs. “Even I’ve done it, I just know how to get back in.” True to their slogan ‘The Key to Your Protection’, the team at Troy Cummings Locksmith are also called upon for security issues for both commercial and private customers. Their services extend to modern security technology including installation of surveillance systems, alarms and intercoms, as well as more traditional locksmithing needs like replacing locks after a break in, or opening an accidentally locked safe. “It can be gruelling work,” Troy says. “I’ve spent four hours opening a safe. When you finally hear that handle click, well, it’s the best feeling there is.” Troy never intentionally entered the world of locksmithing. His grandfather wanted him to become a fitter and turner, and learning the trade formed a part of those studies. “I loved it from day one.”

15

The locksmith profession has changed dramatically since Troy began his studies, but he and his team have embraced the changes and adopted new technologies to diversify the business. Established as a sole operator business in 2002, Troy Cummings Locksmith now employs seven staff and offers a comprehensive range of services from cutting a single key to fingerprint identity security for government and high-rise buildings. Key to this growth was Troy’s extensive study and training in electronic access control, which involved frequent travel to Brisbane. “You never stop learning in this industry,” says Troy. “We always have to adapt, there’s always something new, better locks, stronger safes.” Helping people in emergencies means being available 24-7, which Troy admits can make personal commitments and down time hard to achieve. But he says the reward of helping people in need is worth any lost sleep. “When you get to a job and there’s an elderly lady stuck outside her home, stranded and usually scared, they are so grateful for your service and it’s a nice feeling to walk away knowing you’ve helped someone who genuinely appreciates what you’ve done for them,” he says. “There’s never a dull moment, every day is 100 miles an hour, but I love it. And there’s something pretty cool about knowing you can break your way into anything.”

Max Alpen Sees a Bright Future Ahead for Cairns Writing & PHOTOGRAPHY

By Stacy Wong

Max Alpen is a self-made investment guru. Max is a whiz with numbers, and was naturally drawn to the stock market. At the suggestion of a friend, he decided to dabble in the markets, and hasn’t stopped since. “A friend told me that if I started trading, I wouldn’t be able to stop,” says Max, who started trading with Morgan Stockbroking in 1983.

“I’m a long-term investor.” As an example, Max still holds Woodside Petroleum purchased at $4.17 in ’93, which trades at over $41 today. Max is a Chart Trader, using the software “Metastock” to monitor and track trends and predictions. “When charted daily, weekly, and monthly, predictions off the charts have proven to pinpoint with accuracy within a week.” Max previously owned South Side Raw Materials and Nursery for 30 years, supplying major projects like: the Pier, Daikyo, and Tradewinds. However, he got out just in time as his charts predicted the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). “The charts predicted major dips and a fall was about to happen. I saw the GFC coming, and there was going to be a halt on construction and decreased need for commercial plants.” Max decided to sell off all his stock, but kept the land for future development. Currently, Max is optimistic for future growth potential in Cairns and its residential property market. He also predicts growth in the American dollar, which will benefit the local economy. “Growth in residential property is slow, but it’s steadily growing. It won’t be a boom, but it’s on the up and it will be good for our economy.” “Charts indicate the American dollar will rise, which is great for strengthening our local economy; tourism, exports, and agriculture will grow.” “The Chinese investment in Cairns is solid. Growth factors and growth industries are showing most positive signs. We’re at the cusp of something big. I’m very confident in Cairns.” “I trade as a business; I run it as a business for myself. There’s no pressure because I know what I’m doing.” At 66, going on 67, Max leads an active personal life in addition to his activities in trading and property markets. “I wake up and go to the gym every morning at 5:30 a.m. People are too quick to pop pills and take injections at my age.” Max takes his interest in trading stocks seriously, and is happy to share his trading advice with any one who’s interested. “I go to Villa Romano nearly every morning, 6 days a week; it’s great for networking. Cairns is built on networking.” Max is a face known by many in the community, who are happy to chat with him. During the course of our interview, fellow businessmen and women constantly greet Max for quick snippets of info on how the market is trading. Max is also a philanthropist, believing in giving back on what you earn, at least 10 per cent. “My wife Margaret is a volunteer for the Salvation Army; it’s important we give back to the community. When the door opens, you have to be willing to step through it. But always respect and appreciate the opportunities you achieve along the way.”

NORTHERN UROLOGY By Michelle Dryburgh The team at Northern Urology are recognised for providing the best possible health care, combined with genuine compassion and understanding for their patients. Their high level care and minimally invasive treatment techniques help to restore patients’ health and confidence in a prompt and professional manner, reducing the discomfort, stress and embarrassment often experienced by people with urological conditions. Northern Urology began delivering this new standard of healthcare to the people of Cairns and Far North Queensland earlier this year. Their urological services were extended to public patients after promptly establishing a public urology service at Cairns Base Hospital with a 24-hour on call facility. Dr Stefan Antoniou says the Northern Urology medical team has extensive expertise in complex urological conditions, and offers a complete urological service including state-of-the-art surgery for kidney, bladder, prostate and testicular cancer, minimally invasive stone treatments, prostate problems, bladder dysfunction, male and female incontinence, erectile dysfunction, vasectomy and vasectomy reversal. “Our comprehensive urological service employs the latest technology and operative techniques to treat a broad range of urological conditions, utilising robotic and minimally invasive surgery wherever possible,” he says. “In combination with surgery, we promote proactive preventative healthcare measures to help patients achieve their optimal level of urologic wellbeing. We are actively involved in public health, and are also committed to raising community awareness of men’s health issues.” Northern Urology’s health care team is made up of locally-trained urologists permanently based in Cairns; all are fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and active members of the Urological Society of Australasia. Dr Stefan Antoniou is a highly respected surgeon with subspecialty interests in the treatment of prostate and bladder cancer, benign prostate enlargement, robotics, and minimally invasive stone treatments. He has also authored several papers in the urologic literature, and presented at numerous international conferences, particularly in the areas of robotic oncologic surgery and minimally invasive stone management. A Melbourne University graduate, he has spent time training in both New Zealand and the United States. Also on the team is Dr Garrath Evans, who has a subspecialty interest in minimally invasive kidney surgery, stone disease, and female continence issues. He runs a regular urodynamics session to investigate overactive bladders, and male and female incontinence. He has a strong family connection to Cairns also undertaking his internship and surgical training at Cairns Hospital. Joining the Northern Urology team in January 2015 will be Dr Philip Smith, who is currently completing a fellowship in robotic oncology. “Our specialists have consulting privileges at both public and private hospitals in Cairns and Brisbane, and are committed to teaching at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level,” says Dr Antoniou. “We consider it a privilege to be entrusted with a patient’s care, and are committed to treating them with integrity, precision and understanding.” Northern Urology consulting rooms are located at Level 1, 42-44 Florence Street, Parramatta Park. Northern Urology offers a full range of urological procedures in Cairns at Cairns Private Hospital, Cairns Day Surgery and Cairns Base Hospital. Ph: 07 4041 4400 www.northernurology.com.au

Cairns Profile Homes Michael Court

By Michelle Dryburgh

In this era of mass production, a commitment to quality over quantity can be hard to find. But occasionally a business makes it their mission to provide exactly that. Cairns Profile Homes has been delivering quality residential building services in the region for more than 20 years. Specialising in custom-built designs and innovative tropical styling, Cairns Profile Homes is an award-winning builder with an enviable reputation for superior quality finishes, and client satisfaction to match. Owner Michael Court personally oversees each project, ensuring consistency of quality and customer service whether it’s an entire new home or just an extension. He attributes this attention to detail and care for his clients to his lifelong career as a builder. “I started as an apprentice carpenter when I was 15 year old and progressed to a qualified carpenter by 19 years of age with the family business,” says Michael. “I then transitioned to a builder’s licence when the Building Services Authority introduced the gold card.” Established in 1994, Cairns Profile Homes began constructing twostorey unit developments of four and six unit packages, as well as budget homes throughout Cairns and the greater district. “Because of my trade background as a qualified carpenter I continued to concentrate my efforts in this area as my main source of income for a long period,” Michael says. “I was also doing a limited amount of residential homes for particular clients if requested to design and construct a floor plan for specific sites.” Under Michael’s direction, Cairns Profile Homes has become synonymous with affordable, quality custom-built homes. His unique designs have earned him significant industry acclaim and major awards as recently as August this year. The Master Builders Award for Best Display Home up to $275,000 was for their four-bedroom Edmonton display home ‘The Boston’. Construction of Cairns Profile Homes’ next display home ‘The Emerald’ is soon to commence at Sugarworld Glen, valued at $290,000.

18

Michael says it’s an exciting time to be working in residential building in Cairns. While the beauty of his customised building designs means every home is unique, he finds strong demand for open-plan living and showpiece kitchens. “Today’s trends really embrace open-plan living where the kitchen features as part of the living area, along with easy physical and visual access to the outdoor living areas,” Michael says. “The latest trend which we have incorporated into the new Boston floor plan has a butler’s kitchenette and pantry provision for those busy and untidy times, like preparing meals and cleaning, whilst keeping the kitchen clean and presentable when entertaining.”

Inspections of ‘The Boston’ are by appointment only. To arrange an inspection or for more information about Cairns Profile Homes visit www.cairnsprofilehomes.com.au or call Michael on 0418 183 659.

SEAN RYAN ipac Cairns

By Michelle Dryburgh

Taking fear out of the F word Finances. Just the mere mention of the word can send a shiver down the spine. Whether it’s personal or for business, it’s tempting to treat the complex world of numbers like that growing pile of dust behind the TV cabinet. But similarly, the longer you leave it, the bigger the mess you’ll have to clean up. Combating that fear of finances is what inspired financial commentator Paul Clitheroe to establish the financial advisory firm, ipac more than 30 years ago. His aim was, and still is, to simplify finances by empowering people with a genuine sense of control. His work is continued by more than 200 advisers and support staff across Australia, including Sean Ryan at ipac Cairns. Sean is one of six advisers in the award winning Cairns office who share more than 100 years in the financial industry, making them one of the largest and most experienced teams in the region. “Our approach to advice has always been the same and our clients benefit from a strong local team, backed by a national business which has been delivering quality advice for a long time,” says Sean. “We don’t just recommend products that offer the highest returns. We use our proprietary software to help people paint a picture of what their future might look like, the impact of making trade-offs in life and how to make sure their capital lasts as long as it needs to. This focus on empowering clients to make their own financial decisions separates us from others.” Sean and the ipac team can assist businesses and individuals directly with a diverse range of financial needs including insurance, superannuation, selfmanaged super funds and retirement planning. ipac also offers a range of specialist services to support the work of other experts including accountants and lawyers by advising on the financial implications of major life events like injury, divorce and death. “One area of specialty is helping people navigate their way through the emotional and practical decisions that need to be made when it comes to placing a loved one into aged care. The aged care rules are incredibly complex but there are ways we can optimise people’s assets, income needs and costs.” Since finishing his Economics Degree and later earning his Certified Financial Planner™ status in 2001, Sean this year completed a Master’s Degree in Applied Finance. He has also served as the Financial Planning Association’s Cairns Chapter President for two years. Gaining such high qualifications has required dedication and afterhours commitments, on top of an already demanding work schedule. But it’s these challenges that fuel his passion. “The variety of people we see and the different types of advice they require is what keeps me in the industry,” Sean says. “Our clients range from Generation X’s trying to build up assets, business owners so busy working in their business they need someone to guide them in financial matters, to retirees who are looking for regular income and Centrelink benefits. “Guiding people through all the options, legislation and financial issues, presenting the pros and cons and educating them along the way is truly satisfying and interesting. “And it’s not about how much money a client has to invest, but what it is they wish to achieve and how we can assist them to achieve it.”

Inspired Signs Adam Simes

By Michelle Dryburgh

The days of modest shopfronts and handpainted signs are a thing of the past. Today’s digital print technology and high quality graphic reproduction has made bold, eye-catching signage commonplace, and old-school signwriting an almost forgotten art. But it’s a craft Adam Simes has perfected over 12 years in the industry, and it formed the foundation of his own business, Inspired Signs. “We hardly ever use a brush anymore, but it’s a skill not really taught in the trade today,” he says. “At school I was reasonably creative, I liked art and a guidance counsellor said to look for an apprenticeship in signwriting, and I did. From the beginning I really liked the creative side of the work, the traditional hand painting. That’s all changed with technology, but I’ve embraced that too.” Inspired Signs specialises in wide-format digital printing, full graphic car wraps, stickers and general signwriting as well as custom wall art. “The canvas prints is something not usually offered by sign writers, but I started doing it for friends and family and before we knew it there was a lot of demand.” Inspired Signs has also become a popular option for clients wanting customised car wrapping. “We can design, produce and install modern, striking and eyecatching wraps that turns clients’ vehicles into mobile billboards. We’re finding it’s the best and most affordable form of advertising.” Servicing both commercial clients and the general public, Inspired Signs will happily print a one-off canvas print or sign, meaning there’s no need for bulk orders. They provide a comprehensive service too, from concept and

20

design to fabrication and installation of all products, including illuminated light boxes, window frosting and etching as well as the traditional forms of hand-painted signwriting, gold leafing and contract painting. November marks two years since Adam established Inspired Signs as a home-based business. Within eight months he moved the business to a commercial premises, and now has a team of eight including his partner Lea. Collectively, they share 50 years’ industry experience. “It feels like it’s all happened in just a few weeks. The last two years have really been a blur, but it’s been great,” he says. “Moving into our shop in Anderson Street was a real highlight because it’s given us room to grow as well.” The expansion also led to a key contract printing canvas art prints for Sydney designer Urban Road, which featured on Nine Network television program The Block. Adam says he and his team will always value the traditional art of sign-writing, but find themselves continually excited by developments in the industry. “Once upon a time it was just letters and numbers but now signs are bigger and better than ever before, and full of highly detailed full-colour images,” he says. “We have kept up to date with the latest and best printers to be able to deliver the highest standards of signwriting to our customers, and technology has made it more affordable and accessible for more people. The more eye-catching the design, the more business it attracts, so it’s really providing customers more bang for their buck.” For more information about Inspired Signs visit www.inspiredsigns.com.au

Stark Inc.

Original Fragrances

Photos taken at the National Pharmacy Expo, Darling Harbour June 2014

A chance encounter at concierge with the captivating scent of the Oriental Lily whilst on business sparked the Stark Inc. journey. For Yattee Farms & Stark Inc. owners, Peter and Lesley Bosanquet, it was an easy decision to add the Oriental Lily to Yattee Farms’ product line. The lilies grew extremely well in the lush, tropical climate of Cairns – but the scent was simply stunning, far superior to the refrigerated lilies found in a hotel lobby. “The extraordinary beautiful fragrance of the Oriental Lily in its natural state is far superior to that of the cut flower that has been refrigerated,” says Lesley. This observation inspired Peter and Lesley to reach out to a renowned perfumer in Paris to develop a scent based around the Oriental Lily. Intrigued by the concept, the perfumer sent some sample vials a few months later. Delighted with the scent, and encouraged by the many compliments received, Stark Inc. Original Fragrances was born in less than one year – with its own perfume lab, creating and bottling several new fragrances, including a line for men. “It was hectic. But we’ve made a very high-end product. It’s made in Australia, whereas every other luxury fragrance is imported.” Production of Stark Inc. Original Fragrances begins in France, where the component oils are created under license to Stark. Upon arrival in Cairns, these oils are mixed with the highest grade of perfume ethanol available, and the purest distilled water under strict laboratory conditions. The result is stored for several weeks to allow the components to macerate into Eau de Parfum. As a high-grade perfume, you will notice that Stark Inc. Original Fragrances lack the alcohol “burn-off ” that many other fragrances exhibit – no waving tester strips needed! “The feedback received from luxury retailers is encouraging; to have Stark fragrances held as highly as luxury designer brands is a testament to the quality. The fragrance speaks for itself.” Fragrances are a personal touch that we wear every day, and scent is the most powerful memory trigger; so make your scent a memorable one. The purity of the Stark fragrance line offers luxurious scents we can wear daily, even for those with asthma. Stark fragrances last all day and don’t fade. The scent we wear is an expression of personality. “Not everyone can be categorized. Some women tell me they wear Stark Men, and Hombre,” says Lesley.

21

Stark has developed an exciting new fragrance called Palladium – the Cairns Life team loved the new Palladium fragrance – “This is my favourite of the line, it smells very high-end, and rivals Burberry or Dior.” – Stacy Wong, Editorial Manager. Palladium is undergoing final testing, and will be released early next year. The beauty of the fragrances is that they are versatile and appeal to everyone. Some of the feedback received: Stark – “It’s subtle, not too clingy.” Sorbonne – “I like how fresh and summery it is. It’s nice and light.” Stark Men – “It’s musky, a nice nighttime smell.” Stark Men (from a woman) – “I’m surprised it’s for men. I would wear this! I love the spicy and warm smell.” And all people love Hombre. Fans of Stark fragrances: “So in love with my Sorbonne! The number of compliments I get when wearing this perfume is unbelievable!! Keep up the good work.” – Lauren Sugden Smith “Very nice perfume! Great local product, a must have in anyone’s beauty case!” – Michael Akhavan Stark Inc. even received praise from musician David Hudson in a personalized letter: “Lesley, I have just had my haircut with my ole buddy Marinka, and she talked me into purchasing the small Stark Men spray. I loved it immediately. A true scent of a man; if it’s good enough for Al Pacino, then it’s good enough for David Hudson. Cheers.” – David Hudson Stark fragrances can be purchased online and from these retailers: Calanna pharmacies (Cairns & Townsville), Aroma Hair, Vlase Hair Salon, Cheryls Boutique Townsville, Flowers in the Field Brisbane, Pouch Cairns, and Lakeside Garden Centre Yungaburra. Benefits Buying O ff

Buying off the plan provides the smart owner, occupier or investor with substantial benefits. Buying off the plan can seem daunting when you can’t physically see/touch the end product. However, whether you’re building your dream home, or building an investment property, here are seven reasons why you should be buying off the plan:

1 2 3

Often buyers are able to secure the property at a discounted price: You will pay the current market value for a property, possibly increasing in value. Buyers are able to secure a high value asset for low initial capital outlay: A deposit is made to secure the property (usually 10%) however the balance of the purchase price does not need to be paid until the property has been built. This gives buyers time to organise finances and/or sell existing property without the need for bridging finance. Increasing property values: If the market experiences growth, the property purchased “Off the Plan” may

33

of

the Plan !

be increased in value when the building is completed (often one to two years later).

4

5 6 7

CairnsLife

Tax advantages: If the property is purchased for investment purposes, the buyer may be able to claim depreciation on tax for items, including fixtures and fittings. It is recommended that buyers consult their accountants to find out whether they are eligible. Customisation: Often a buyer has greater choice including different colours, finishes and layouts, which the developer may be able to incorporate – such as removing the third bedroom, creating a larger living area or putting in a media room or even merging two apartments into one larger layout, or choosing certain fittings and fixtures. Brand new: Having that feeling of “newness” and also being the first one to live in your new home. Lifestyle: Newer houses are built to reflect today’s tastes and preferences; there is a greater variety of choice.

Most working Australians would have received their annual superannuation statements over the past few months. Most will choose to make sense of their statement on their own, which is great if you know what you’re looking for.

Here are a few tips to help you investigate how your super is performing: • FEES With long-term savings such as super, the more of your wealth that stays in your savings, the greater your lump sum will grow. So always check the fees in your super fund: there will be an admin fee, an adviser service fee and a management fee (ICR, MER). The overall fee is an annual percentage charged on your balance and you want this to be as low as possible so you keep more in your savings. If you have no advice in your fund, you shouldn’t pay more than 1 per cent. Check the online comparison sites to see the range of fees. • INSURANCE Check your statement for insurances. Typically, you could have life insurance and total and permanent disablement (TPD) paid from your super. And if you requested it, you’ll have income protection (Group Salary Continuance). You can compare your premiums with an online quote for a retail product, but more importantly, check that you are adequately covered: Is your life insurance enough to cover debts for your family? Is there a policy to provide for your family if you are disabled or unable to work for an extended period of time? Review this annually and get the fund to send you the policy documents if you are unclear. • PERFORMANCE Be very careful about putting your super with a new fund just because they claim higher returns. Typically, the best-performing funds do not keep their ranking the next year. It is more important to be in the band of good fund performance: Use financial websites to view the 2013-

14 benchmarks for different fund types. Beware of benchmarks tied-in with marketing: use only government sources such as ASIC and organisations with an AFSL. • RISK When your annual statement comes in, always make sure your investments (e.g. growth, balanced, conservative, cash) reflect your risk profile. Generally, younger people should be in growth, and seniors are usually in conservative and cash. But use an online risk profiling tool, such as SmartMoney’s, to ensure you’re invested in the right options for you. • CONTRIBUTIONS Use the statement to look at your total contributions for the year. This will help to determine whether you reach your retirement savings goals. Generally speaking, the higher your personal contributions, the greater your retirement lump sum. When considering where to invest a windfall (tax refund, work bonus) think about your life stage and priorities: when you are young and getting established, a windfall should generally go into the mortgage or the savings for your deposit; when you’re closer to retirement, it might be better in your super. I always advise people to employ expert advice if they do not understand their investment options. But many questions can be dealt with by knowing which questions to ask, and doing your homework. Good luck.

Kaftans

aftans date back to the 14th century and originally covered the arms down to the ankles. However, a modern take on Kaftans sees them on trend, with various lengths & adaptations, often with detailed embelishments from fun pompoms to tasteful beading. Suited to the Tropics as the loose cut allows air flow, they are often a ‘free size’ meaning Kaftans fit many shapes and sizes. A tall, generously sized lady will carry this off perfectly. Annie’s Boutiques have always stocked exciting Kaftans for all budgets. From the soft Rayon that flows so beautifully to the light cotton voile that feels so cool and the glorious silks that are simply divine, choose your fabric to match the occasion.

LET CAIRNSLIFE MAKE YOU UP by

MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design

With Tori’s Hair Design, we wanted to style in a very Glamorous Hollywood 40’s theme. We styled with our Deep Wave Tong throughout the mid lengths and ends and pushed over one shoulder with some added gloss and shine to showcase the amazing Colour.

Colour Specialist

Tori wanted to have a vibrant change so with a starting point of dark roots and golden blonde midlengths and ends, a change of colour for Fun and Vitality was needed to stand out in the crowd. As tori’s previous colour was already light enough there was no need to pre-lighten the hair to be able to create a fabulous vibrant and bold Colour. We chose a bright iridescent Purple through the roots and Midlengths to get a bright High Fashion effect, with a Softer Pastelising of Purple & Pink hues through the ends. This is a current High Fashion Look which is On Trend. Stunning Effect.

Make Up Artistry

For Tori’s look we wanted to do something a bit more dramatic. To start with we evened out the skin tone giving her a flawless complexion, we wanted to go bold on the eyes and big on the lips, we gave the eyes a lot of definition and sparkle using deep greys, purples and black, and adding a pop of shine with Pink glitter shadow to highlight. For Tori’s lips we wanted to enhance them with a bold shade of pink to make her hair pop, and to tie it all together we defined her cheek bones with a dusting of Deep Rose Pink Blush and filled and shaped the brows to enhance.

TIP OF THE MONTH

To give your skin that fresh and radiant look this summer always remember the 3 rules; 1. cleanse, 2. moisturise and 3. Prime before applying foundation. Also with Summer upon us make sure you apply a sun protect product or use a foundation which has a spf. Factor. Stay Safe and enjoy Summer

R efresh gets refreshed ! Refresh City Day Spa (Refresh) is under new management and ownership. Since taking over in June, Rebeka Pople has revamped this inner city sanctuary. Refresh offers pampering and maintenance treatments for both men and women. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and pop in to get pampered by Rebeka and her vibrant team. What inspired you to take over Refresh City Day Spa? Refresh has been part of the Beauty/Spa scene in Cairns for the past 25 years. I instinctively knew that with a shot of enthusiasm, a complete spa makeover and a team of talented “Refresh Girls” that I could rejuvenate Refresh, making it an inner city sanctuary for all things beauty, body and spa. Ultimately, it was the encouragement from my gorgeous and very supportive husband David, and his belief in me that inspired me to purchase the business when the opportunity arose. What sets Refresh City Day Spa apart? Exceptional customer service! The positive energy created by the “Refresh Girls” – Stephanie, Tamara Marie and Merit each bring their own specific talents and expertise to all our treatments. Our prime focus is to ensure our clients leave our Day Spa feeling valued, thoroughly spoiled and eager to return. What are the must try treatments at Refresh City Day Spa? The lunchtime Refresh Facial Treat – just takes 30 minutes. It’s perfect for a quick escape from the office,

CTL Medical Services Writing & PHOTOGRAPHY

By Stacy Wong

Cairns Tourist and Local Medical Services (CTL Medical Services) has provided general medical care to Cairns locals and visitors to our beautiful region for the past eighteen years. The team at CTL Medical Services shares a genuine concern for the health and well being of all their clients.

Since 1996, CTL Medical Services has offered general practice care, and has developed niche medical services in the areas of travel medicine, tourist medical services, and employment and injury management. “Our travel medical service grew from an interest in infectious diseases and the complexity of illness presentation to our practice. With many Cairns locals holidaying and working overseas, there has been a demand for travel medical advice and vaccination services.” CTL Medical Services has developed specialized services catering to employment medical assessment and injury management. In early years, hoteliers referred employees who required treatment to CTL Medical Services. Gaining a reputation amongst local industries, CTL Medical Services took on more referrals, developing a niche service. “Our Doctors have provided assessment of workplace injuries to WorkCover Queensland for 17 years.” Injury management services include the treatment of acute workplace injuries and the development of medically appropriate duties and a return-to-work plan. “We provide timely acute care of injuries, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitative advice. We coordinate with both the employee and employer, to return workers to their

normal employment duties. This reduces lost productivity, insurance premiums, and workplace litigation.” CTL Medical Services continues to serve local businesses, providing advice on injury prevention and reducing time lost injury rates. Businesses benefit from improved productivity as injured employees are enabled to return to their most appropriate work duties whilst recovering from injury. Other services provided to businesses include pre-employment medical assessment, drug and alcohol testing, and advice on the effect of preexisting or emergent medical condition. Travelling Abroad? There’s nothing worse than being sick on vacation, so prevention is the key. CTL Medical Services has been a registered Yellow Fever clinic since 1996, with a comprehensive range of vaccinations including: Japanese Encephalitis, rabies and typhoid. Prophylactic medications for malaria, gastroenteritis, and altitude sickness are ready at hand. CTL Medical Services also provides water filters, first aid kits, mosquito nets, permethrin packs and insect repellent. Upon consultation, clients are provided with a travel handbook and vaccination booklet. Meet the Doctors, each with his own specialized set of skills: Dr. Gary Litherland – Having worked for the Royal Australian Air Force, and the Royal Flying Doctor Servce, Dr. Litherland has a specialized interest in aviation, scuba dive medicine, travel and injury management. Dr. Campbell Crilly – Before private general practice, Dr. Crilly worked in rural medicine in Cape York and later the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Dr. Crilly obtained a Yellow Fever licence in 1996 and has a special interest in travel and occupational medicine.

57

CairnsLife

What distinguishes CTL Medical Services from other clinics? • General practitioners providing specific advice in the fields of travel and tourist medicine, occupation medicine, and aviation medicine. • Located conveniently and centrally in the City. • Comprehensive services, vaccinations, medications and travel kits on site. • A long history of providing medical services tailored to business needs. Major Achievements: • Consistent care of local clients and repeat business for travel medical clients. • “We are proud to include many local businesses for injury management with many national and international clients in the retail, light industrial, and mining industries.” What is the outlook for CTL Medical Services? “Our desire is to continually refine our services to all our clients. We always look to improve our travel advisory and injury management services, working with our clients in addressing their specific needs. The outlook is bright and to date the majority of our success has been through word of mouth.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Stacy Wong

Who are you and what do you do? I am a Skin Care therapist, businesswoman, and busy working mother of two beautiful girls. My interest and passion for quality skin care has always been important. As a young athlete, I spent many hours outdoors. I grew to appreciate the value of developing an effective skin care routine to counter the effects of too much sun exposure. These early experiences inspired me to pursue a career in which I could help people to achieve healthy and radiant skin. I have accumulated over 6 years experience in the beauty industry, and hold a Diploma in Beauty Therapy as well as certificates in spa and hot stone work. At my Studio 60 beauty salon, I provide facials, body scrub and massage treatments, pedicures and waxing and tinting services. Providing personalised advice on all aspects of skin care is an essential part of my work.

Who has impacted or inspired you most in your career? My mother! An elegant woman with beautiful skin herself, my mother taught me from a young age the importance of taking care of my skin. While training to be a therapist, I came into contact with many experienced and inspiring teachers. I have also had the opportunity to work with highly skilled and professional therapists in various spas and beauty salons throughout Cairns. These amazing women have all shared their expertise and knowledge with me, and have motivated me to continually learn and grow as a beauty therapist. What is special about your salon? A tranquil sanctuary, Studio 60 provides you with a calm and soothing environment which will allow you to escape the stresses of daily life and have some much-needed “me time.” Customer service is our top priority. ARTS CENTRE

playing this month the When it comes to the upcoming Jazz Up North show at Tanks Arts Centre by Melbourne’s The Hoodangers, audiences can expect the unexpected. At least that’s what trombonist Ben Gillespie says about the band who effortlessly transition between traditional jazz, urban folk and inspired improvisation. Performing their first ever show at Tanks Arts Centre in October, The Hoodangers are guaranteed to put on an unforgettable night of entertainment. “I am sure that audiences may not have experienced a band quite like ours before,” says Ben. “We are high in energy, and quite raucous at times, in addition to being tender and whisper quiet. It’s not the ‘cool and groovy’ jazz or ‘old and slow’ traditional jazz that some people might be used to.” Their diverse musical inspirations have inspired the band’s eclectic sound. All the musicians grew up in the 1970s and 1980s and Ben is quick to point out that the musical and societal events of those decades greatly influenced the band’s sound, mixed in of course, by their parents’ musical tastes which sat firmly in the 1960s. Some of the band members have been playing together since primary school, some joined together busking on the streets of Melbourne. “The band originated from a traditional African-American New Orleans jazz line-up of trumpet, trombone, clarinet, bango, bass and drums,” he says. “Although the origins of the band is rooted in that genre, we all have diverse musical tastes that are reflected in what and how we choose to play. Being able to move across genres involves having a solid musical craft and a good dose of bluffing.” It’s not only the band’s diverse style that has earned them acclaim. They’re also wellreputed for their ‘tongue-in-cheek’ in attitude, which translates directly into their music. “We have always had a very humorous bent to our band,” says Ben. “We didn’t plan to be that way, it just turned out like that. We came together as youngsters and laughed with each other as much as played with each other. Even though the band is made up of mostly serious, professional musicians who have been learning their craft for the best part of 30 years, we constantly remind each other not to take stuff too seriously.” Since their inception two decades ago, The Hoodangers have toured to Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, India and Fiji, to name a few. They’ve also played at some of the most coveted festivals in the world, including the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the biggest rock festival in Europe, the Roskilde Festival. Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible band perform in Far North Queensland for the first time this October.

thE hooDangERs FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER Traditional jazz? Urban folk? Inspired improvisation? The Hoodangers are all this and more – with a thumping energy that plasters a grin on your face from ear to ear! Enter the room blindfolded into one of Hoodangers gigs and if you come in on the right song (like Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘Black Bottom’), you could nearly be forgiven for thinking you were on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The Hoodangers perform at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the Jazz Up North series on Friday 24th October. For more information, please visit www.tanksartscentre.com

Meet our Cairns “It” Girls – two local girls living and breathing the Cairns Life(style). Liv n Lou have been inseparable for the past 10 years and have always been at the forefront of what’s hot in fashion, beauty and events. “Follow us on our journey through the seasons and events of our beautiful city. Look out for our hot tips on fashion, beauty and entertainment!”

• Given the humidity in FNQ , I would highly recommend using a humidity-resistant and longwearing foundation – Estée Lauder Double Wear and Lancôme Teint Idole are fantastic! • On the weekends I actually prefer to use a BB cream or tinted moisturiser – it doesn’t feel as heavy and looks more natural. We both love Clinique CC Cream – it’s a colourcorrecting tinted moisturiser with an SPF 30. I suggest using a powder to set and matte the finish and slightly build coverage. • I do think ‘not to prime is a crime’ as Napoleon Perdis says – once you’ve used a primer as a base before you apply foundation you will never be able to go back. Napoleon Perdis have a wonderful range of primers. • Be careful using too much highlighter for a daytime look – if overdone, it can just make you look shiny and sweaty – especially if your skin has a natural tendency to shine. • Always bring items to touch-up when you are heading out. My touch-up must haves are: a pressed powder (to touch up any shine), lipliner and gloss/lipstick.

Planning Your Office Christmas Party By Stacy Wong If you think you have loads of time, forget it. It’s never too early to start organizing for your office Christmas party. Everyone in the office is looking to you to throw a great event. Don’t disappoint. Follow these tips to organise your work Christmas party without a hitch.

Menu

Budget

Entertainment

Figure out what you have to work with, and stick to it. Book Early!

Good venues fill up fast. Now is the time to secure your spot before it’s too late. Set a Date

You want as much employee attendance as possible, so pick a date that suits the majority.

Everyone needs to eat. Make sure the caterer/restaurant has a menu to accommodate different dietary needs. Invitations

Once you’ve set the date and location, get invitations out ASAP. Make sure your invitations include the RSVP deadline and dietary requests. Sending a reminder before the party is also a good idea. Just like venues, good DJs, bands and entertainers will be busy over the holidays. If your budget allows, book them in early. Have a playlist as backup in case plans or schedules fall through. Clean Up

It’s easy to forget about what happens after the party. Don’t get stuck cleaning up after everyone. Book cleaning services ahead of time; they’ll do the dirty work for you.

By Stacy Wong

S hoctober First Response Australia It’s Shoctober! While this may sound like some crazed festival, Shoctober addresses a serious health issue that affects millions of Australians: heart health. Shoctober is a nationwide initiative by the Cardiac Arrest Survival Foundation dedicated to reducing needless deaths from out of hospital cardiac arrest.

For information, contact: First Response Australia www.firstresponseaustralia.com.au PH: 07 4047 7700

First Response Australia (FRA) is a diverse company specialising in Paramedical Services that are crucial for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survival. “Approximately 30,000 people die annually from SCA; half of those are out of hospital. The current rate of survival is approximately 13 per cent. This survival rate varies dramatically between cities, states and communities. The age variation for SCA is non-discriminant.” At Melbourne Airport, we see an example of how good the survivability can be; FRA provides training for the Aviation Firefighter Rescue Crew Instructors at Melbourne Airport. They attend to a number of SCAs per year and their success rate for restarting a heart on site is 87 per cent, and the survival rate (out of hospital, neurologically intact) is more than 60 per cent. The survival from out of hospital SCA depends on: • Quick recognition of an arrest • Quick response • Quality CPR • Early defibrillation • Use of Advanced Circulatory Technology (ResQPODs and CardioPUMPS) When all of these factors come together in a timely fashion, survivability is significantly increased. How is SCA treated? SCA is treated with CPR and defibrillation. Approximately 1 in 2 SCA patients are shockable, and require early defibrillation to reset the heart’s rhythm to allow it to pump. Defibrillation should ideally be accomplished within the first 3-5 minutes. Together with early defibrillation, immediate and uninterrupted quality compressions are vital to keep the patient viable. Those who are not shockable require quality CPR in the hope that they will become shockable or respond to more advanced cardiac life support. How crucial is FRA training and equipment in SCA survival? “We have seen a significant decrease in survival rates in NSW recently. Elsewhere the survival rates are not increasing vey much when compared to certain areas in the U.S.A. where out of hospital neurological survival is as high as 30-50%.” “This overseas success is due to the collaboration between stakeholders in making sure that from the lay first responder up to the emergency department there is a continuum of care and technique.” “In Australia this collaboration is poor; we’ve become bogged down with ‘accredited training.’ We have very restrictive standards imposed upon us by the Vocational Educational Training system, curbing the adoption of innovative resuscitation techniques we see overseas.” FRA includes many of these innovative techniques in its training and promotes the sale and adoption of life saving Advanced Circulatory Technology. FRA

85

CairnsLife

also ensures that all participants in classes are able to confidently use AEDs and perform CPR that is conducive for better cardiac arrest outcomes. “Our Paramedical Service carries specialised Resuscitation equipment – not seen on State Ambulance Services – such as: Defibrillators with ‘Real Time CPR Feedback’, ResQPODs, CardioPUMPs, and Automatic Cardiac Compression Devices.” Throughout the world, professional Ambulance Services are now adopting Defibrillators that give ‘real time’ feedback on compression depth and rates. It has been shown that even the best-trained professionals have difficulty in maintaining quality compressions in CPR and help is required with audio/visual feedback systems. An AED is only required 50 per cent of the time – BUT quality CPR is required 100 per cent of the time in all SCAs, and this can only be achieved with quality training and audio/visual feedback systems. FRA was the first company in Australia to deliver Accredited Defibrillation Courses, first to train First Responders in the use of Rescue Airways, first to include full defibrillation training in all of its CPR and First Aid programs, and first to distribute Advanced Circulatory Technology (ResQPOD and CardioPUMP) – resuscitation devices that increase the survival of cardiac arrest more than any other device or technology known in resuscitation science. FRA includes the latest world’s ‘best practice’ techniques in its training. FRA is also the major distributor of ZOLL defibrillators in Queensland – the only AEDs that have real time feedback for rate and depth – the main factors responsible for successful outcomes in SCA. FRA has a number of divisions including: • Quality Emergency Care Training from Basic Life Support to Paramedical. •Distributorship, Sales and Servicing of many brands of Emergency Medical and Rescue Equipment to the fitting out of hospital clinics. • Paramedical Services – providing paramedics and emergency medical technicians for events and relief medic work to the resources sector. • WHS consultancy and training. Next month: FRA will be offering our corporate clients the ability to purchase the NEW fully automatic AED for cost price when they book their next CPR class. In early 2015, FRA will be launching a public campaign called “CPR tips without the lips,” encouraging communities to recognise cardiac arrest, call for help, and initiate CPR without the need to be qualified. This campaign is hugely successful overseas and has seen the survivability of SCA increase significantly. In Europe and America the respective Resuscitation Councils have wide-ranging campaigns promoting Compression-Only CPR, which is saving hundreds of lives annually. FRA will be the first organisation in Australia to adopt such a campaign.

The Cairns Clinic

M ental H ealth

Mental Health is a serious issue that affects us all. SANE Australia statistics indicate that one in five people will experience some form of mental health problem, and nearly half of the population (45%) will experience a mental disorder at some stage in their lives. The statistics are staggering, and chances are you know someone who has experienced mental health issues. This month, Mental Health Week (5th to 12th October) aims to increase mental health awareness, and promote social and emotional wellbeing. This national initiative aims to break the social stigma associated with mental health issues, encouraging those suffering mental health problems to seek the much needed help and support they need. With the right support, we can help individuals, families and carers gain a greater insight into their situation and improve their capacity to cope with the challenges they may be experiencing. The Cairns Clinic is dedicated to helping people suffering from mental health problems. The Cairns Clinic has a committed team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, and staff to attend to patients’ clinical and comfort needs. “The Cairns Clinic is a registered private psychiatric hospital and is part of The Ramsay Health Care network here in Cairns. The Cairns Clinic provides both Inpatient and Day Patient programs for clients diagnosed with Depression, Anxiety and Mood Disorders, Addictive Behaviours, Acute Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Day patient programs are also available to clients who have been referred by their Psychiatrist and/or General Practitioner,” says Shane Mitchell, CEO of Ramsay Health Care Cairns. Getting Help “Admission to The Cairns Clinic is always on a voluntary basis. It is important for anyone experiencing mental health concerns to see their General Practitioner (GP). Not all clients experiencing a mental health issue will need to be admitted to a psychiatric clinic and GPs are ideally placed to provide assistance and assessment; some clients may be referred to a Psychologist, some to a Psychiatrist, but many people can be effectively treated by their GP with a range of medications and therapy options.” “Families and carers play an important part in providing ongoing support for any client.” The hurdle with mental health is the ongoing stigma and discrimination; problems associated with the stigma of mental health can prevent clients from seeking help. “One of the most effective keys to mental health is to seek early treatment and support. Due to the stigma, many clients do not seek help until symptoms are pronounced and there has been considerable disruption to their lives.” “Sometimes, people with mental health issues don’t want to acknowledge their need for assistance, or they simply don’t know how to raise the issue with family and friends. Early identification and treatment is generally associated with better outcomes for people.” How does the Cairns Clinic help individuals, families and carers cope with mental health? We work closely with the Mental Illness Fellowship

By Stacy Wong

organisation here in Cairns. A senior member of their staff regularly visits the Clinic to inform clients of their services. In addition, the Mental Illness Fellowship conducts regular education and information evenings and there is a “Carers Group” for our clients and their families. After our clients are discharged, ongoing support is provided by the Fellowship free of charge for those families and carers requiring further support. What sets The Cairns Clinic apart from other health services? • The Cairns Clinic is a registered private psychiatric hospital (sub-acute) with clients utilising their private health cover; some clients are admitted under WorkCover, or self-funded. • The Cairns Clinic remains the only private psychiatric clinic in North Queensland. The closest private psychiatric hospital is in Rockhampton or Brisbane, so our referrals come from far and wide. Inter-state referrals are not unusual. • We aim to empower clients at The Cairns Clinic by actively involving them in their own care plan, and encouraging clients to take responsibility for their treatment and outcomes. • The Cairns Clinic offers a unique and comfortable environment for clients with private comfortable rooms that all have en-suites. There is a lovely outdoor protected deck and pool overlooking tropical gardens for clients and their visitors to use. • The Cairns Clinic provides 24-hour specialist medical and nursing care. The team at the Clinic includes: GPs, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapist and Nursing staff. • We offer yoga, pilates and gym classes, as well as other alternative therapies. • We have a team of professionals who provide regular education sessions in medications, diet and Work-Link. What can we expect in the future for The Cairns Clinic? Ramsay Health Care is committed to meeting the needs of the Cairns Community with the expansion of services at The Cairns Clinic. A new Psychologist has recently started with us, and we have plans to expand our Psychiatrist base over the next 12 months. The Cairns Clinic has recently opened a new ECT Suite, and we are currently expanding our Day Patient Programs to include Grief and Loss, and Addictive Behaviours. We will be expanding our Day Patient Programs for clients who may not need or want to be admitted to the Clinic, but who would like the benefit of attending group sessions. These sessions encourage clients to discuss their situation in a group setting, allowing individuals to see that they are not alone. The expanded range of programs will offer people the opportunity to take part in sessions that specifically meet their mental health needs, to share ideas and resources and to learn from each other in a supportive environment.

Youth Mental, Physical and Social Health

headspace – Cairns The headspace Quiz – Are the following statements Fact or Fiction? Send your answers to our Facebook page for a chance to win two double movie tickets! (You must be between the ages of 12 and 26 years to enter)

Statement 1: There is no hope for people with a mental illness. Statement 2: There are usually only 1 or 2 contributing factors to a mental illness. Statement 3: 75% of mental health problems emerge before the age of 25. Statement 4: Non-qualified people can help a person with a mental illness. Statement 5: Feeling down or flat from time to time means you have depression. Statement 6: 25% of young people will experience a mental health problem during adolescence. (Answers at the end of the article…)

Youth undoubtedly face immense pressures and expectations that are overwhelming and seemingly insurmountable at times. Between the ages of 12 and 26, young people are at their most vulnerable to mental health and substance use problems, and have difficulty finding the resources to handle it on their own. headspace is making a difference where it is needed most – for our young people. Answer 1: FALSE – There are many supports, treatments and community services available. People with a mental health problem are able to lead active, productive and healthy lives. Answer 2: FALSE – Although the exact causes of mental illness is not known, there are many contributing factors to a mental illness. Some of the contributors can be biological (inherited

from your parents), psychological (trauma, loss, neglect), and environmental (stress, social pressure). TRUE – Adolescence is a time of change for our bodies and brains, and while most of this time is new and exciting, some young people struggle with emerging mental health issues during this time. Getting help early, even for small issues, is better than trying to struggle through on your own. Answer 4: TRUE- Friends, family, peers can do a lot. Acting and speaking in a positive manner can create an environment that builds on people’s strengths and promotes understanding. Treat somebody having a tough time with respect. Although friends can offer much help and support, sometimes you will need additional support; this is where services like headspace can help out. Answer 5: FALSE – It is a part of being normal and human to feel down, and everyone goes through this. Depression means that feelings of sadness get in the way of you doing everyday things or enjoying the things you do. Answer 6: TRUE – Many young people experience a mental health problem throughout adolescence. headspace is around to help young people access youth-friendly services when they experience problems.

Answer 3:

Find us online or Facebook: headspacecairns On-line or Telephone eheadspace is available if getting to our headspace centre is a problem, or if the young person isn’t quite ready to talk to someone face-to-face. F NQ Medicare Local Writing & PHOTOGRAPHY

By Stacy Wong

Health care management can be a nightmare when faced alone. Far North Queensland Medicare Local (FNQML) is dedicated to guiding individuals and the communities of Far North Queensland through the labyrinth of health care systems. FNQML is an organisation committed to ensuring seamless health care delivery, improving health outcomes, and developing a comprehensive regional primary health care system to address FNQ’s diverse community needs. “By identifying health needs and service gaps, FNQML drives improvements in primary health care to ensure services are better tailored to meet local community needs,” says Dr Michael Wilson, CEO. FNQML’s health initiatives comprise a wide range of community health needs and services, from children to aged care, mental health, Indigenous medical services, and health promotion across all FNQ communities. “FNQML works to improve supportive structures for these communities, reducing disadvantages and improving equity in primary health care services,” added Dr Wilson. FNQML works closely in a supportive role with Indigenous health services, as well as the region’s two Local Hospital and Health Services: Cairns and Hinterland, and the Torres and Cape. The organisation is funded by the Federal Government to progress harmonised service delivery for patients. “The importance of meeting the health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a priority at FNQML, so we pay close attention to the inequity between rural and urban service delivery,” says Dr Wilson. “For example, we streamline the patient’s journey between patient services in the community, and hospital services.” Closing the Gap (CTG) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations have 2.5 times the risk of chronic disease than other Australians. In prioritising Indigenous health services, FNQML’s CTG team supports two programs to effectively assist with chronic disease management. “Firstly, our ‘Improving Indigenous Access to Mainstream Primary Care Program’ is aimed at enhancing life expectancy by improving access to culturally sensitive primary care services for Indigenous populations,” says Dr Wilson. “Then we have ‘Care Coordination and Supplementary Services’ – employing and sub-contracting Care Coordinators who work collaboratively with General Practices, clients and all health service providers, ensuring effective care plans exist.” The CTG team recently coordinated with partners to successfully organise the first National Closing the Gap day in Cairns; a culturally rich Family Fun Day full of activities. Various outreach trips and information sessions have also been conducted to support and educate communities. Health Promotion “In mapping health promotion programs and activities that are currently being delivered, the Community Needs Assessment (CNA) team can effectively identify gaps and areas needing improvement,” says Dr Wilson. In 2013-2014, the CNA focused on accessing and using population health data, gaining a total of 1,767 participants contributing to the CNA through online

surveys, in-person surveys, and interviews. The CNA drives successful implementation of community health and nutrition initiatives. “We have encouraged healthy affordable food activities with the store nutritionists,” says Dr Wilson. “For example, cooking demonstrations were conducted during the Wellness Centre opening on Thursday Island.” ‘Health Yarn Up’ workshops are also held across the Kuranda community – where participants provide local input around key messages – such as GP engagements and entitlements, medical checks, children and family health, alcohol and substance misuse, mental health and suicide prevention, and men’s health. Immunisation Children’s health is of utmost importance for ensuring healthy futures for our communities. FNQML facilitates training and education for over 400 health care professionals and childcare workers. By improving immunisation rates in the region, FNQML’s Immunisation Program lowers community risk of acquiring a vaccine-preventable disease. “Immunisation is one of the greatest scientific advancements, preventing the deaths of hundreds of millions of people by reducing the spread of vaccine preventable diseases and cancers,” says Dr Wilson. Aged Care As populations age, ease of access becomes extremely important and necessary to those who need it most. “The goal of FNQML’s Aged Care Project is to improve access to primary health care services for older people who are living in a Residential Aged Care Facility or in the community,” says Dr Wilson. In addressing these goals, FNQML aims to provide comprehensive and sustainable aged care programs to support the community. Through the implementation of simple support strategies, FNQML provide allied health support to residents, who otherwise would not have received treatment. Mental Health Mental Health irrefutably affects all communities. Finding the right help and support can be daunting, but FNQML’s Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) and Partners In Recovery (PIR) programs aid and support individuals, their families, and carers through mental illness. “In the first year, the ATAPS program received more than 1,400 referrals, and provided well over 3,000 sessions with a psychologist, accredited mental health social worker, or credentialed mental health nurse,” says Dr Wilson. In partnership with 15 organisations, with Centacare Cairns as the lead agency, PIR is designed to help individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. PIR also helps support their families and carers. The program works with multiple sectors and services, and supports that individuals may require to facilitate greater collaboration, coordination, and integration. PIR became operational in November 2013.

What inspired you to become an optometrist? I have always been interested in science, especially the medical field. Optometry involves much more than just prescribing and fitting glasses and contact lenses; the eye is a very complex organ. What do you love about your job? I love the interaction with my patients. I take pride in caring and providing great services and products to my patients for over 34 years in the North.

I enjoy taking the time to get to know my patients and help them by really listening and understanding what they have to say; this I think is very important. It has given me great pleasure in continuing to grow my business over the years in an everchanging industry. We strive to keep up with the current trends, while building a reputable business with a loyal client base. What advice do you have for maintaining eye health? Many people consider their eyesight to be their most precious sense. So it is vital to have your eyes examined regularly, especially if there is a family history of eye problems. I strongly recommend being proactive in preventative measures against eye problems and disease, such as monitoring diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, children’s visual development and discussing lifestyle changes. “As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.”

Unless you are born lucky, getting that knock-out smile can be time-consuming and expensive. But, the benefits of a beautiful smile can last a lifetime, and every great photo is a reminder that it was all worth it.

Always W

t n a

In fact, a beautiful smile and a perfect bite are possibly the greatest lifelong gifts you can give your child, or even yourself ! On occasions people are dismissive of orthodontics as being “only for appearance”. We believe that this is misguided. Human beings are uniquely social and the main interface between individuals is in the face. It is well known from scientific tests that the mouth, teeth and lip area is the most socially significant part of the face. Orthodontics is the intentional physiological movement of teeth from one position in the jaws to another. It is used to correct the visible position of the teeth for appearance, ease of cleaning and comfort, as well as destructive biting patterns stressing other teeth lips and cheeks or the jaw joints just in front of the ears. To get it right, it is crucial you know that the person providing your orthodontic treatment knows exactly what he or she is

doing. Only a registered Orthodontist has the appropriate credentials to offer you the best possible treatment that’s right for you or your child. Beaches Orthodontics, Smithfield, have been quietly beavering away creating beautiful smiles for over 10 years now. From simple interceptive treatments, to full aesthetic braces and Invisalign®, we provide it all at Beaches Orthodontics, in a family-friendly atmosphere. To provide you the best possible quality care, we deliberately keep our patient numbers low to ensure that you are the focus of our care and all of your care is provided by a Specialist Orthodontist, from start to finish. If you are chasing a beautiful smile for you or your child, and you live or work in the Northern Beaches, then breeze by Beaches Orthodontics. No referral necessary.

Testosterone It’s not just sex!

Testosterone • Levels may decrease by 1-2% per year • Decreased hormone levels can lead to an increase in weight • Deficiency is diagnosed by a fasting blood test measured on two separate days • Reducing testosterone levels is one method of treatment for prostate cancer • Replacement may turn “grumpy old men” into “nice guys”

P (07) 4041 0700 F (07) 4041 4007 reception@cairns-urology.com.au www.cryotherapy.com.au

As women grow older they reach a point in their lives called menopause when their hormone production decreases rapidly leading to a number of symptoms and consideration of hormone replacement. Men also have a decrease in their hormone levels which is more gradual from their peak in their 20’s and 30’s. The male hormone testosterone is mainly produced in the testicles and is carried through the circulation to have its effect. Testosterone levels may decrease by 1-2% per year. Approximately 10% of men aged 40-60 and 30% of men aged 60-80 have significantly decreased hormone levels. This is often accompanied by an increase in weight particularly fat around the abdomen. It is rather like the chicken and the egg as to which comes first. Decreased hormone levels can lead to an increase in weight. The increase in weight can also lead to hormones being taken up in the fat and therefore being less effective. The symptoms that are likely to develop from a low hormone level may be decreased libido (desire) and a reduced ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Physical symptoms consist of weakness, muscle and joint pains, thinning of bones (osteoporosis), sweating and hot flushes, dryness of the skin, reduced muscle mass and strength, abdominal obesity, breast enlargement and reduced body and facial hair. Psychological symptoms may consist of tiredness, depressed mood, irritability, poor concentration and reduce short term memory. The ability to do crossword puzzles and carry out mathematical calculations may be reduced as well as an ability to follow directions on a map.

Testosterone deficiency is diagnosed by a fasting blood test measured on two separate days in the morning when the level is at its highest. It is also necessary to have a prostate check to exclude possible prostate cancer as hormone replacement may worsen the situation. In fact, reducing testosterone levels is one method of treatment for prostate cancer. While a number of men may show “normal “ hormone levels it is impossible to know what the level used to be at its peak and therefore what the relative reduction might now be. Testosterone deficiency can be treated with replacement using capsules, skin patches, creams and gels and injections. If treatment is given then the man will require regular blood test follow-ups including prostate specific androgen (PSA) It is important to note that replacement of deficient levels is personalised and monitored. It will not have similar effects to massive doses of testosterone sometimes taken by some body builders. So called “testosterone rage” appears to only occur in men in whom extreme doses have been taken. Testosterone replacement may turn “grumpy old men” into “nice guys”.

Helpful Tips to Maintain

Healthy Vision

The popularity of wearing eyeglasses is on the rise. We’re seeing more celebrities and style icons donning fashionable specs these days. Some people buy multiple pairs to suit different moods and outfits. But glasses aren’t just a fashion statement; there are benefits in wearing them too. In fact over 75% of vision loss is preventable or treatable. Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide affects more than 300,000 Australians. Of this group, only half are currently diagnosed. Glaucoma refers to a disease where the optic nerve is slowly destroyed. While it is more common as people age, it can occur at any age and everyone should have their first check for glaucoma by the age of 40. Although anyone can get glaucoma, some people are higher risk, including those with:

A family history • Diabetes • Migraine • Short sightedness (myopia) • Eye injuries • Elevated blood pressure • Use of steroid drugs

1. Avoid the sun’s UV damage

This occurs after exposure to ultra-violet radiation over many years. The simple way to protect your eyes is with prescription sunglasses or lens coating on your glasses. FNQ’s harsh sun puts our eyes at risk of forming cataracts, a gradual clouding of the eye lens that destroys vision. Photochromic lenses, often called Transition lenses, darken on exposure to light and are a good option to provide sun protection as well as vision correction in the one pair of glasses. Also wearing a wide brimmed hat is helpful.

2. “Look out” for these symptoms

If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact your local optometrist immediately: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Headaches, nausea or dizziness after visual concentration Blinking or eye rubbing after visual concentration Difficulty adjusting focus between near and far objects Blurred or double vision Frowning while reading Spots in your vision Placing head close to book when reading or writing Difficulty reading small print Short attention span Cross or turned eye Reduced ability to adjust to light changes Decreased colour vision Sudden eye pain or discomfort

3. Have eye tests every 2 years

Even if your eyesight has been good all your life, it’s a great idea to have a routine eye test once every two years, or at any other time if you’re concerned about your vision. Most examinations are bulk billed to Medicare. Regular eye examinations are important for the ongoing health of your eyes and vision regardless of your age or personal circumstances. You can book an eye appointment at Bupa Optical Grafton Street, Cairns (number) or Bupa Optical Smithfield (number) or bookings can also be made online at bupaoptical.com. au. The team at Bupa Optical is dedicated to ensuring you get the best care you deserve. We welcome all health funds.

Pure Synergie ‘Where’s By Michelle Dryburgh

Michael gone?’

Skin Store

Women of Cairns have echoed these words since the much loved face of beauty disappeared from the city’s biggest department store. The answer? One of the freshest new businesses in town. You’ll now find Michael at Pure Synergie Skin Store, North Queensland’s exclusive stockist of Synergie Skin.

PHOTOGRAPHY By Stacy Wong

The Australian owned label produces cosmeceutical grade skincare and mineral make-up, free of parabens, artificial colours and fragrance, and other harmful or questionable ingredients. Situated on the newly revitalised Lake Street, Pure Synergie Skin Store is the first of its kind in Australia, delivering a product and experience never-before-seen in Cairns. Visitors are treated to a welcoming spa-like atmosphere and modern, minimalist styling, offset by a striking feature wall. The walls are lined with both Synergie Skin’s skincare range and mineral cosmetics, and there’s an illuminated makeover booth fit for a movie star. It’s here that Michael works his magic, drawing on 22 years in the beauty industry to help women, and men, find products to protect, change and nurture their skin. “My passion has always been to really look after my clients and make sure they walk out with a smile on their face, looking and feeling amazing,” he says. “Synergie Skin products really work and the results my customers are already having speak volumes. We’re really taking science to the streets and educating people on how to protect and improve their skin.” Synergie Skin provides targeted skincare for all ages, from adolescent specific cleansers and moisturisers, to products that actively combat visible signs of ageing. There’s products to treat all skin types and conditions too, including acne, rosacea, oily, dry and sensitive skin, pigmentation or melasma, and soothing products to nurture skin after cosmetic procedures. And to complete your beauty regime, there’s even a line of haircare and dental products. Michael has already picked out a few of his favourites, including SuperSerum, which harnesses the power of DNA-repairing peptides and marine biotechnology to stimulate cell renewal. He also loves the Ultimate A, Vitamin B and Suprema C serums and the sun-

95

protecting moisturiser Uberzinc, and doesn’t leave home without his Lip Service daily lip treatment. “I can’t stress enough how important it is for people to protect their skin from the damaging rays of the harsh North Queensland sun, and these products do that,” he says. “Best of all, they are effective at not only preventing sun damage, but also reversing pigmentation and ageing effects caused by the sun.” If it’s make-up you’re after, Michael has you covered. Synergie Minerals foundations also contain zinc oxide UV protection, while the range of concealers work to camouflage problem areas like dark under eye circles, blemishes, redness or yellow and brown pigmentation. You’ll also find mineral blush and bronzer, a range of eye makeup and the so-good-you-can-eat-it Synergie UV Protective CC lipstick, containing all natural ingredients including a hint of stevia leaf and mandarin. “It really is so good you could eat it, and women appreciate knowing they’re not putting any nasty chemicals on their lips,” Michael says. “All of the cosmetics are very gentle and nurturing and they won’t block pores, so you could even sleep in them without doing any harm.” But with the Synergie skincare range to refresh your skin after a busy day, why would you? Appeals to the

Migration Review Tribunal The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) can decide to approve or refuse a visa application and they have powers to also cancel a visa. In the case of your visa being refused or cancelled you may be able to seek a review of the decision by lodging an appeal to the Migration Review Tribunal (MRT).

The MRT is an independent body that provides a merits review of visa and visa-related decisions made by the DIBP. In conducting a review, the tribunal will consider a case afresh and has the power to change the decision under review. Not all cases can be appealed and the Migration Act and the Migration Regulations set out the decisions that the MRT can review, who can seek review of a decision, how the review application is required to be made and the time limits for making a review and the application fee payable. A fee is payable in almost all cases however the MRT will refund 50% of the full fee if the MRT makes a favourable decision on your case. The general process of the MRT appeal involves several steps. Initially after lodgement of an appeal an acknowledgement letter is given, and the MRT gain the DIBP file copy. The case is then allocated to a tribunal member and the member reviews the documents. The MRT then invite the review applicant to attend a hearing and/or to provide information or to comment and respond to information.

The MRT is required to inform applicants of certain information that might lead to an adverse decision and to give you an opportunity to comment on or respond to that information. The MRT then make a decision. When the MRT makes a decision on a review there are four outcomes available. If the MRT affirms the decision under review, it has decided that the decision under review should not be changed. The effect of this is that the decision remains in force. If the MRT sets aside the decision under review, it has decided that the decision should be changed. The MRT may substitute the decision with a new decision. If the MRT remits the decision under review, it has decided that the decision should be reconsidered. The effect of this is that the DIBP is required to reconsider the application having regard to any directions made by the MRT. Lastly, if the MRT decides that it has no jurisdiction to review the decision, the MRT has decided that it has no power to review the DIBP decision. For further advice on the MRT and your appeal options you can seek the advice of a Registered Migration Agent.

Removals and Storage, which is still operating successfully today. Stephen explained that over the years he saw training gaps within the industry. “Many potential employees held heavy vehicle licences but lacked driving experience, confidence and essential safety knowledge,” Stephen said. “However, the most important issue within the Transport industry is safety. It’s essential that drivers are aware of associated responsibilities such as driver fatigue, load restrictions and completing work diaries correctly. “Our focus is not just assisting students to obtain a heavy vehicle or high risk work licence, but ensuring they are aware and understand their obligations as a driver or operator of machinery. “After several years in the Transport industry, I experienced the need for continue training and skill competency first hand. This is the reason I became an accredited trainer and assessor, to pass on the knowledge and skills I have gained through my own business and previous job experience operating cranes, elevated

work platforms and various construction machinery. Joining forces with national Registered Training Organisation (RTO), ACTM (Australian Construction Training and Mining) and thanks to a substantial CSQ (Construction Skills Queensland) grant, Alpha Truck and Training are set to enhance the skills of those already in Queensland’s building and construction industry. Stephen Bertoncini said over the next 12 months, in association with ACTM, Alpha Truck and Training will deliver building and construction short courses that include operating backhoe/ loader, excavator, dozer and more throughout Far North Queensland. “I’m looking forward to working with individuals and businesses, assisting them with the many training and course options available,” Stephen said. “Further training will not only increase the skillset of the employee, but will also increase the marketability of the business for the employer, potentially bringing in more revenue – an absolute winning situation for both employer and employee.” “Every student or business has individual needs, we also recognise prior skills, experience and learning abilities, which helps to create a customized training experience for our clients.”

Cairns’ newest truck and training centre

Alpha Truck and Training is the successful culmination of many years of valuable experience within the transport and logistics industry for owner operator, Stephen Bertoncini. Sharing knowledge and experience with people of all ages and employment backgrounds who are considering a career change, learning new skills or upgrading existing skills in order to access more rewarding employment opportunities. We provide an extensive range of truck and forklift driving courses in Cairns.

Building homes

tropical

climate

The Cairns region is a typical tropical climate and we should be building homes to suit that climate. A tropical climate generally has hot and humid summers and milder, drier winters. The monsoon trough drops closer to the Cairns region from Christmas to March and this brings the hot, humid conditions which produces thunderstorms and tropical cyclones. Our cyclone season is usually confined to between December and March but as we all know sometimes it can come early or late. A well designed home (for any climate) doesn’t necessarily mean an expensive one. Many elements are very cost effective, especially if you are planning a long term home.

So having said all this, getting the right design and layout is essential in our tropical climate. We need to ensure that our homes are designed for the climate, if not we can run the risk of having a hot home that is expensive to keep cool, particularly over the long summer. With the rising cost of energy, cooling our homes to a comfortable level can be an expensive exercise. Passive (or non-mechanical) cooling using natural ventilation is the least expensive way to cool your home and this includes using the right orientation of your home on the land. The use of good insulation, tinting glass, light coloured wall and roof materials, certain styles of windows, external shading or large eaves, high or ventilated roof spaces and landscaping will all make a difference to the comfort level of your new home. If we have to depend on having the air conditioning on in summer for comfort then it’s not very suitable for our tropical climate, nor is it environmentally sensitive. The tropical sun in Far North Queensland plays a major role in the comfortable day to day living in your new home, so when you are considering the purchase of your land it is vital that you consider its aspect relating to the sunrise and sunset. Our sun rises in the east, arcs north during the day and sets in the west, and this line of arc differs from summer to winter. With this in mind it’s logical that we have our outdoor living areas on the cool and shady side of the home, whether that is the rear, the side or even the front. We should be locating our utility areas, such as garage and laundry on the hotter side of the home facing north or west. Consider obstructions to air flow such as location of internal rooms and try to direct breezes around, over them or even through openings in them.

Posh Lifestyle is a contemporary indoor/outdoor furniture design company importing quality products from around the world to enhance the look of commercial and residential properties at affordable prices. If the views from your block are to the west then you should consider what time of day the shade from the hills will give you some protection from that hot, late afternoon sun. You may end up with a great patio facing west and an amazing view of the hills, but not be able to sit there in summer because it is in full sun and very uncomfortable There are many sources of information on what to do for good tropical design and it’s well worth spending some time doing a little research yourself before you commit to that new home design. If you are looking to build your new home then come and talk to me and together we can work on the best in design and practicality for our tropical climate.

Zeta Schriber Twomey Schriber Property Group Zeta Schriber has been in the real estate industry for almost ten years, specializing in property management. From her experience as the owner and director of Tropical Cairns Rentals, a company solely focussed on property management, she is well-versed on the Cairns rental market, managing properties from Palm Cove through to Edmonton. At Twomey Schriber Property Group, Zeta heads the property management section. PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Stacy Wong

“In rentals, experience counts; you must be able to address ongoing issues on a daily basis. You also need to know the market, and the specific areas, only then can you achieve the best results for your clients.” What is your specialty? Property management. I completely run the property management section. The bottom line is that you can’t provide a superior property management service if you don’t focus on it 100 percent. I am well aware of my clients’ expectations, I am hands-on, and the buck stops with me. What differentiates you from competing real estate agencies? We are very much different. The standard model for a real estate agency is that the principle runs the sales department and the rental division is the poor cousin. At Twomey Schriber Property Group, we combine my skills and experience in property management with the vast sales experience of Kevin Twomey; you have two highly active, highly engaged principles in both divisions. Both are as equal as each other, therefore we are in a position to offer our clients the best of both worlds under one umbrella. What advice do you have for investors? As an investor, look at the entirety. What is the worstcase scenario if something happens? Can you continue to service the property? Do your research, and be prepared for the unexpected. Once you have taken everything into consideration, then enter the market with confidence. If you’re looking for a result-focused, stress free and worry free property management solution, we are only a phone call away.

103

What do you love about your job? I don’t know if the word love is the right word, property management is a very stressful job, that is why there is such a huge turnover in property managers. There is never a dull moment, but with experience and maturity comes calmness and level thinking; nothing much ruffles my feathers. I enjoy the challenges that the job presents and the satisfaction of an outstanding outcome. This is an industry where “you reap what you sow” and you are judged on your past performance. Landlords and tenants’ expectations are there to be met and good service is the key. What is your favourite suburb in Cairns? Why? I own property in the city, live in the city and work in the city. Safe to say, I am a city person. I love what the council has done on Lake Street, and feel that the business district is on the verge of great growth. However, in saying that almost every suburb holds its own appeal, just look around. Cairns is simply stunning; we need to stop for a moment and appreciate this piece of paradise. Describe your perfect home? I think living is not about bricks and mortar. A house only really becomes a home, when it’s warm, inviting, comfortable and filled with love, laughter, family and friends.

any Australian households have energy bills higher than all of us would like them to be, that’s why getting solar energy for your house is always a worthy investment. Solar panels do come with a cost, but that cost is an investment into your future. At first it may seem expensive, however in the long run it won’t be long until you get your return on your investment and even start getting paid for all the electricity you make. Commercial businesses are now taking advantage of solar technology. As they use most power during daylight hours with air conditioning, lighting, computers etc, solar power helps to offset nearly all of their energy costs. Solahart is a specialist in commercial solar installations and can provide a cost free analysis for any business. To save even more money and energy you can look into getting a solar hot water system, which again uses the

power of the sun to provide hot water, as opposed to using an inefficient electric hot water heater. Now what’s holding you back? Solar energy is the cost effective, environmentally friendly, and long term solution to reducing your electricity bills, and making your home more sustainable. With growing concerns about the environment and rising electricity prices, it’s no surprise that the demand for solar energy has grown substantially in recent years. As the Far North’s leading supplier and installer of alternative energy products, Solahart Cairns has successfully been operating since 1993, as Cairns locals, owners Bob and Trish Mulligan are committed to the region and to producing cost effective, energy efficient solutions for clients. October Safe Work Month

Remote Safety Compliance OUT OF SIGHT SHOULDN’T MEAN OUT OF MIND

You step out of the car for your site inspection, and low and behold there are untagged cables lying all over the ground, there are a couple of labourers walking around without safety boots and you notice the runoff from the site is going straight into the creek out the back… and just to top it off the auditor just noticed it as well. We’ve all been there, at that moment thinking to ourselves it was ready to go last week when we did our pre-audit inspection. What could have gone wrong in that short space of time and what can we do to prevent it from happening next time? Maintaining a safe site and having it running smoothly and efficiently can be hard enough when it is just around the corner, let alone when it is a day’s travel away. Remote sites come with their own unique set of safety challenges which require innovative techniques to overcome. One of the best ways to keep track of a site’s safety, whether local or remote, is to have a good team. Having a good team goes a long way to not only keeping a compliant site, but an efficient and safe one as well. When we are talking about remote sites, the most critical team member is going to be the site supervisor. When selecting a good supervisor you need to look for someone who will work within your system, uphold your company’s values and, above all else, be good at working with others onsite to get them onside and working with, rather than against, you. This person will be the champion of another

major piece of the remote compliance safety puzzle, company culture. When encouraging culture within the company, we want to focus on the quality and efficiency outcomes rather than purely the compliance outcomes. Deep down most people enjoy that sense of achievement of a job well done and look forward to producing something they can be proud of. If we can foster this feeling, it will go a long way to having the team work towards these goals, which is especially useful in those remote locations. I know what you’re thinking… all this talk of team and culture doesn’t prove to you that it is definitely happening onsite. To allay your (and my) fears, let’s talk about monitoring. This is a touchy point when it comes to your site supervisors… we need enough information to be confident that everything is progressing, however we don’t want our supervisors spending half their day producing it for us. With the advent of smart devices and much better connectivity, the evidence gathering process can include more than just completion of paper forms and checklists. We can now put inspections on tablets, take photos which can stream directly back to head office and have a subcontractor complete their site inductions online. The key thing to remember when using any form of monitoring system is to ensure it is being undertaken and the evidence is being stored in a logical and retrievable manner. Reminders being sent to both site supervisors and to compliance managers are a good way

111

CairnsLife

to ensure this happens. A great tool to ensure this occurs is Mango Compliance Software. It not only provides automated reminder emails but elevates the activity to a manager if the reminders go unanswered. If you require assistance in setting up a reliable and robust safety system, want to speak to a safety consultant with regards to safety compliance and implementation of systems, or book a demonstration in Mango Compliance Software, contact Total Safety Services (office@totalsafety.com.au) and our friendly team will steer you in the right direction. So, to recap what we have covered, we need to ensure we have a good culture, a strong team and a way to check and record what the team is doing. With these in mind we can ensure a good outcome the next time the auditor comes to town…

hen it comes to finding a good material to use for a benchtop, granite is among the best on the market. Granite benchtops are beautiful in any setting, and they come in a variety of styles and unique colours for you to choose from. Granite holds some significant benefits over wood, plastic, laminate, and other materials you may use for a benchtop as it is quite impervious to water and is less absorbent than many solid surface products including some plastics. You do not have to worry about having an outdoor bench with a granite top because granite will make it through anything that Mother Nature may send it’s way. Once considered an inaccessible luxury for some, stone is now one of the most widespread and affordable materials used in renovations and building. Chefs all over the world prefer traditional

granite and marble for their pastry boards and stone benchtops. Granite and marble’s natural ability to stay cool makes it an ideal flat surface for handling various types of pastry dough, including cookie dough, pie dough and bread dough. Cool dough will not stick to the surface and is much easier to handle, cut and manipulate. The Marble & Granite Fitters Cairns recognises the difficulties that potential clients face when trying to select that special piece of marble, granite, limestone or reconstituted stone and recommend the ever popular Black Pearl Granite: a product of nature originating from India that is considered to be a timeless beauty. The Marble & Granite Fitters Cairns are highly focused on ensuring each client’s project is designed and installed to all desired specifications and that is why they stock a large selection and variety for you to choose from.

The Mobile Phone Hospital has been in the Mobile Phone Repair business since 2001.

Our first store in Queensland is now open for business. We are located in Cairns Central shopping centre and have built a brand new store with an amazing selection of accessories. We repair iPhone, iPod, iPad, HTC, Samsung, Nokia and many more phones on the spot. Nothing gets sent away as trained technicians run all our stores.

The Mobile Phone industry is an evolving and changing industry and not the easiest to keep up with. To combat this we have all our stores linked to an internal knowledge base where all repair techniques and technical information is shared amongst the stores. So if your phone has seen better days then bring it in and we will fix it up while you do your shopping.

PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY EARLVILLE VETS

C mmunication Dogs have strong inherent instincts which allow them to communicate effectively with their own kind. It is a universal language that enables them to avoid conflict and interact safely.

Learning to recognise some of these signals is a wonderful way to strengthen and improve the relationship you have with your own beloved canine. Watching dogs interact with each other is one of the best ways to learn to identify some of these gestures. Having this basic knowledge means you not only have a better understanding of your own dog, but it also gives you the skills to recognise the behaviour displayed by other dogs you may encounter in the community. Some of the more common signals used in the world of canine communication, include head turning, softening the eyes, licking the nose, yawning and sitting. All of these signals are very subtle indications that the dog is feeling uncomfortable and is trying to calm the emotional and physical process of interaction. Dropping to the ground has two different meanings depending which way the dog is lying down. The belly turned up means your dog is showing submission whilst the belly to the ground means they are trying to pacify a situation. We see dogs use the ‘play bow’ to initiate a game, release tension or when they are uncertain of how to interact with another animal. Curving their body or turning away is

117

CairnsLife

used to avoid confrontation during the approach or is displayed during the process of communication. Dogs greet each other in this manner as it is less threatening and will also use this body language to calm an over excited dog or as an indication of uncertainty or fear. We assume when a dog is sniffing they are simply recording information from their environment. However they also use this as a way of communication, during moments of uncertainty, when being approached by another dog or a human, or to avoid confrontation. One of the most recognisable and often misunderstood actions in the canine community is a wagging tail. Tail wagging does not always mean happiness! Dogs wag their tail during displays of aggression, when they are fearful and submissive and when they are trying to calm a situation. Understanding our dog’s emotions and being able to interact in a calm and respectful way is the key to successful dog ownership. How easy it would be if our dogs spoke English! What makes a Master? Mastery is the ability to blend skills and knowledge in a specific area of practice – a profession, trade, athletics, science or the arts. Mastery is practice, not knowledge alone. Mastery of any field takes instruction, practice, stamina, setbacks, and intentionality.

Who Are Masters? Masters are the people at the “top of their game.” They have mastered all the essential aspects of their field. Masters are natural leaders and mentors. They raise the bar of achievement and pave the way for breakthroughs and innovation for those that follow.

Here we feature some of our local Masters – each of these people has a deep command of the basic practices embedded in their trade or profession, experts and masters in their specific field.

Cairns Periodontics SpecialistS in Gum Disease & Dental Implants Writing & PHOTOGRAPHY

By Stacy Wong

Dr Brian James and his team at Cairns Periodontics specialize in the treatment of gum problems, and the replacement of missing teeth with dental implant restorations. Periodontal (gum) disease is by far the most common problem seen in dental practices.

“Periodontal disease can be associated with diabetes, heart disease, strokes and it has been suggested there is a link with premature births,” says Dr James. “We have many patients seeking implant treatment to replace a single missing tooth or to replace multiple teeth. Implant retained dentures are popular with our mature patients as they can eliminate the problems faced by ill-fitting dentures.” You can trust in Dr James’ skills with over 18 years of specialised periodontics experience working with the people of North Queensland; having spent over 9 years practicing in Townsville, and 9 years in Cairns. What’s new & innovative at Cairns Periodontics? By far the latest and most exciting addition to our practice is the introduction of the Periolase; it’s a laser used to treat gum disease using a procedure called LANAP – Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. We are seeing excellent results in patients treated via this method compared to conventional therapy. Dr James is the first periodontist in Australia to provide this treatment, which required specialised training in the U.S.A. Not all lasers are the same, and LANAP is a patented regenerative treatment protocol. It’s the mouth equivalent of Lasik Eye Surgery, and only offered in a few places in Australia at present.

118

What advice do you have for people to maintain and achieve a perfect smile?
It is very important to see your dentist at least annually for an examination. Become informed and ask questions; ask your dentist to examine you for gum disease. There’s no point having a Hollywood smile if you have untreated gum problems. Avoid smoking, or quit as soon as possible. Smoking is extremely detrimental to oral health as well as general health. Drink plenty of water and brush and floss your teeth!

POLE PLAY Studios

Award-winning dance school Pole Play Studios (PPS) opened in July 2005 with the introduction of pole fitness as a fun way to spice up your fitness routine. Writing & PHOTOGRAPHY

By Stacy Wong

Pole fitness has both physical and mental health benefits. It increases endurance, core strength, muscle power and flexibility, while improving your figure. You will find your self-confidence grow as you learn dance techniques and the finesse of pole work. Over the years, pole fitness has rocketed in popularity, and PPS has garnered worldwide recognition. “PPS was one of the first pole dance studios to open in the world so we have had many years to hone our art,” says owner/instructor Sophia Warren. “It took 2 years for me to train up any other instructors as we have always had a minimum requirement of a 2-year pole dance history. This is to ensure safe practices and quality control, and has turned out to be the industry standard worldwide. Although it was not easy, I am glad I stuck to it!” “Since then we have grown from strength-to-strength. Now in our 10th year, we have an established community of top quality staff and dedicated students and a worldwide reputation for excellence.” “I have trained with many of the world’s best, including Jamilla Deville, Imogen Kelly, Marlo Fisken and Felix Cane, and have found many ways to ‘fast track’ our students skills from Beginners to Competition levels. We had two Beginners level pole students achieve their Shoulder Mounts recently – that used to be an Advanced level move!” PPS Headquarters is a private, purpose-built boutique studio at 13/193 Hartley St., Portsmith, just a 5-minute drive from the center of the Cairns CBD. “It’s a space where students can grow and learn to become masters of their own physiques in a safe, supportive and fun environment.” “We offer a wide range of classes. Whether you want to feel sexy, focus on fitness or work on performance pieces, our students are encouraged to work on the aspects which best suit their needs.” “We also host Pole Play Parties for Hens, Birthdays, Team Building or purely for fun! Participants often say it was the highlight of their night!” Pole Play’s masterful team of Instructors: • Sophia – The daughter of a contemporary dancer, she started dancing before she could walk, and has been training in different styles ever since! Sophia has a 15-year history in pole dance, in addition to many years of other styles of dance, burlesque, cabaret, circus, aerials, bodywork and performance art. She is a qualified X-Pert Pole Fitness Trainer, teaching burlesque and pole dance technique and fitness full-time for over 9 years. • Heather – started dancing at 3 years old and never looked back! She has been teaching pole dance and burlesque for 7 years. • Sandra – has a background in ballroom dance and cabaret theatre, and has been training full time with PPS since 2011. She is currently studying for her Certificate 3 in Fitness. • Amy – represented Australia in Gymnastics for 4 years in a row, and then coached for a further 10 years before having a break to have a family and do a teaching degree. Now she’s the handstand, gymnastics and deadlift specialist at PPS.

119

“We have a very high level of varied skills among our staff, and we are always working to improve them too. On top of that, we regularly host touring dance celebrities who bring world-class skills and fresh energy to the studio.” “We won four awards in 2013 without really trying, so this year we decided to make an effort and have won nine awards so far! Most recently we won 1st Runner Up in the Professional Division and 1st Place in the Group Division of the QLD Pole Championships! So now we’re off to Canberra to represent QLD and the NT in the national level Australian Pole Championships. Wish us luck!” What do you love about teach pole fitness? “I love that I get to dance every day, and help other people reach their fitness goals. It helps to keep me fit and active, and it’s very rewarding in many ways!” “I love seeing people’s self confidence improve as they become more sure of themselves, and stronger physically and mentally; it’s incredibly gratifying witnessing their satisfaction when we can help them achieve a move they’ve been struggling with for some time in a matter of moments.”

Crackenback Chiropractic & Colonic Clinic Dr Debra Lawson By Stacy Wong

Dr Debra Lawson has been working with the human body for well over 30 years. Starting as a Neuromuscular Therapist in 1983, she became a Chiropractor in 1996.

Today, Dr Deb treats people at her Edge Hill based clinic, Crackenback Chiropractic and Colonic Clinic. Here she combines her experience in chiropractic adjustments and neuromuscular therapy with a range of other therapies to create a very unique health and wellbeing clinic. The Crackenback office is a warm and inviting retreat, with a funky leather lounge and chairs, and numerous pieces of artwork; it feels like visiting a friend’s living room as opposed to a medical clinic. “People often comment on how good the office feels. Crackenback is a cheerful, comfortable, and professional yet relaxing office. I like it that way, and I’m really proud of my office,” says Dr Deb. With a 30-year track record in helping to relieve pain and coaching people on how to live longer and healthier lives, Dr Deb has developed an impressive reputation for getting results. Dr Deb was featured on “A Current Affair” for her specialised Chiropractic work. As a former windsurfing instructor in the U.S.A., Dr Deb sustained an injury to her neck and back. Struggling to get it treated effectively and tired of living with pain, led her to begin her own studies into treating injuries. “I have a lot of experience working with whiplash and neck pain. I would say this is my forte; I am really good at neck treatments. I never thought that when I studied to become a Neuromuscular Therapist, that working on the human body would become my life’s work. I’m very happy to say that I still love my work.” There’s more to Crackenback than just ‘cracking’ backs. “I named my practice Crackenback because no matter how much explaining one does about the ‘Vertebral Subluxation Complex’ (fancy name for misalignment) people still call it cracking their back!” “I still remember the day I was at Crackenback Mountain in the Snowy Mountains. At that time I was living in Sydney but had plans to move to Cairns, and when I saw the sign with Crackenback on it, I knew that was going to be the name of my Cairns clinic. Just a bit of fun and an indication of my sense of humour.” “People tend to think Chiropractic is mainly about getting rid of pain, which is one of its benefits but that’s not all it is. Chiropractic improves the health of the spine by keeping it mobile. The spine provides support to allow us to stand upright, as opposed to being an amoeba, and the spine also protects the nervous system. The nervous system is like the power supply from the brain to the body, so best we take care of the thing that protects it.” “Likewise, the discs in the spine, which are like the shock absorbers between the vertebra, require movement to stay healthy. A little known fact is that the discs get fluid from the vertebra above and below. However, if there’s not enough movement, the discs tend to dry out, becoming more susceptible to injury.” Dr Deb remedies this by doing Chiropractic adjustments using a gentle drop table to restore the desired movement in the spine, which allows the joints and discs to remain healthy. Results Matter “I consider myself a results driven Chiropractor. I love helping people feel better. Knowing I’ve helped to improve someone’s quality of life just makes my day. What makes me different is my approach of combining adjusting with neuromuscular and a range of other therapies that give people the results they are looking for. If you haven’t tried this approach I encourage you to do so and see the difference for yourself.” How do you keep business going? “Well this question is particularly relevant as this month we are celebrating Crackenback’s 10th birthday. Reaching a milestone like that is cause to take stock and celebrate.”

120

“From a professional point of view, my patients know that I always do my absolute best to help them. I don’t think you can fake a genuine caring attitude. I believe that if you focus 100 per cent on the person in front of you, they will actually respond better to the treatment.” “When people know you really do care and that you are listening to what they have to say, they will come back and refer their friends and family.” Colonic Hydrotherapy/ Colonics/ Colon Cleansing/ Hydrotherapy Many names for the same treatment! Crackenback is the longest establish Colonic Hydrotherapy clinic in Cairns. “Colon health is often ignored until it is too late. Colonics improve your health through cleansing. When you cleanse the colon, you help to detoxify your whole body. The less toxicity there is in your body, the healthier you’re going to be.” “If you suffer from constipation/bloating/wind or a feeling of just not being really well as you once were, colonics could be the solution you have been looking for. We get men and women, of all ages coming in for treatments.” “It never ceases to amaze me the results that people get from colonics. One of the most common comments from a new colonic client is that they wished they had done it sooner because they feel so much better!” Want more information on colonics? “EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT COLONICS BUT DID NOT KNOW WHO TO ASK” is available in PDF and audio on the website. The Detox Coach Dr Lawson also offers one-on-one detox coaching. This can be done either in person or online. As “The Detox Coach,” Dr Deb will create a detox plan to suit you and your dietary and lifestyle needs. There is more than one way to go about detoxification. After interviewing you and assessing your needs, Dr Deb will suggest options specifically tailored for you. Dr Deb’s Personal Secrets to Good Health: • Regular colonics, at least once a month. • Regular Chiropractic • 7-day juice fast, at least once a year. • Eating healthy, moderation is key. • Taking time out to enjoy life. What makes Debra Lawson a master? “Practicing what I preach and deep desire to help my patients.” Crackenback is celebrating its 10th year anniversary this month, offering a Buy 1, Get 1 Free promotion for October to celebrate and thank current patients as well as welcoming new patients to the Crackenback Family!

John Hyde Glass & Aluminium Specialists By Stacy Wong

With over 25 years experience, master glazier John Hyde has specialised in all aspects of glass and aluminium glazing; his company has grown to be renowned nationally and internationally for exquisite and innovative works.

Locally owned and operated, John Hyde Glass & Aluminium Specialists (JHG) has provided unparalleled glazing services to Cairns and the FNQ region. JHG also extends services across Australia, Papua New Guinea and international locations. “We are always striving to be up-to-date with the most recent innovative glass products and architectural fittings from all around the world. We specialise in all aspects of glass and aluminium glazing, including custom stainless steel, commercial glazing, custom and specialty, framed and frameless glass installations,” says John Hyde. “We also offer all domestic and residential glazing solutions and services; from reglazes to the supply and installation of aluminium windows and doors, shower screens, glass splashbacks, mirrors, glass balustrades, glass pool fencing and even custom fish tanks. Really there’s not a lot we haven’t done.” “From your family home to multi-storey highrises, we pride ourselves in attention to detail.” With every project, JHG brings an extensive network of highly qualified and diligent service providers. John’s team is committed to delivering the highest standard in quality and service. “Our team has a wealth of experience and the expertise to use aesthetics, ergonomics and products to expand and develop your ideas.” “We also offer unique solutions that save you money, and on occasions space. We enjoy custom designing and offering creative solutions. Our work is not only about the look, as we go beyond the surface.”

“The spirit of JHG is showcased through our work. We call this our ‘invisible element of design’ – our commitment to quality is a reflection of the manufacturers and suppliers we choose to use. Over the years, we have discovered the best manufacturers for each type of product; therefore our clients are not disappointed with inferior products. This enables us to offer you a special and unique outcome, which you not only want – but deserve.” What’s the future outlook of John Hyde Glass & Aluminium Specialists? Any exciting projects coming up, or currently under way? I have always strived to grow the company every year since its inception. Given the economic downturn we have faced here in Cairns in recent times, to be able to continue to grow every year is something I am very proud of. We are currently involved in a number of exciting projects, having just finished the ‘Cairns City Alive’ project doing custom glass roof skylights for the Northbound & Southbound bus shelters, which also incorporated custom designed ‘Waterjet’ cut stencilled images. Some other exciting installations we have completed lately include: glass pool windows and wet edges, glass floors, glass awnings, switchable glass and LED ‘Power Glass’ projects. A project that we’re excited about is a major refurbishment of a penthouse in the North Shore Towers building, where we have

122

CairnsLife

completed a cantilevered glass pool – the first of its kind in all of Australia – consisting of glass floor and three glass sides, including massive 19mm glass picture windows overlooking the Esplanade. We are also currently undertaking works at Redlynch Central Shopping Centre redevelopment with experienced locally owned and accomplished builder Keir Qld. In regards to the future projects, we believe that with the likelihood of the AQUIS Great Barrier Reef Resort project getting the goahead and the discussions in relation to the Singapore Aspial Corporation 7 Tower project, our specialisation in these sorts of projects and the flow-on-effect in the local business community certainly has potential to provide long-term success for local businesses like mine, and other local businesses throughout FNQ. What inspired you to get into glasswork? I was interested in following in my father’s footsteps as a Cabinet Maker, but unfortunately there weren’t any positions available for me to pursue that career. I was offered an apprenticeship in the Glazing industry with a local company, and over the years of my apprenticeship gained a lot of experience working for some of the better known major glazing companies. In 1994, I went out on my own as a Subcontractor and gradually grew the company to where we are today. In the last seven years, my company has completed projects throughout Australia and overseas, including a one-off custom frameless glass curtain wall project in Port Moresby, PNG.

THE

Crystal CaveS René Boissevain

By Stacy Wong

René Boissevain’s passion for crystal hunting started from the moment he cracked open his first Agate geode and was enthralled by its wondrous contents.

René’s interest in crystals began when he moved to Australia from Holland. He and his family settled in the Tablelands, where René worked as a tobacco grader. A friend from the farm took René to Agate Creek to dig for Agate geodes that they could sell. “I didn’t know what Agate was, but I went along with him. We were digging with picks and shovels, and then I cracked one open. I was amazed; I’d never seen anything like it. I grew up on a Dutch dairy farm,” says René laughing. That moment sparked a craving in René that could not be stifled. He wanted to learn and discover everything he could from these mesmerizing aesthetic specimens. He delved into books, encyclopaedias, and museums, acquiring as much knowledge as he could. “I was always a poor student. I would get bored very quickly. But since I found that Agate, I wanted to learn more from that moment on. I didn’t want to stop learning.” “There is a misconception that they’re just rocks, but it’s actually the crystallization of minerals. It’s the aesthetic that I am passionate about.” With his yearning for adventure, René spent over 30 years exploring every corner of the world, meticulously collecting the unique and unusual. His collection includes the rarest and most extraordinary crystallised mineral specimens, gemstones, fossils, and rocks. “When collecting, they have to be perfect: without flaws, nothing chipped or broken.” René wanted to share his passion with the world, housing his collecting in a unique and interactive cave. Upon being fitted with a miner’s hat with head torch, visitors set about exploring the caves that René built. Visitors are encouraged to touch and photograph the crystals that are carefully placed throughout the cave. The interactive Crystal Caves lend the feeling as though you are making your own discoveries as you explore the caves. From humble beginnings, The Crystal Caves grew into fruition over years of hard work and determination. “I had a dream. We set aside whatever we could. When I had enough set aside, I built the first section of the caves. The response from the public was great. That gave me the courage to continue and expand the caves.” “I’ve created an environment where they belong, not just hiding behind a glass case.” Since opening in 1987, The Crystal Caves has been the biggest attraction to the Tablelands. René’s daughters Cecilia Boissevain and Ghislaine Gallo, now manage The Crystal Caves, sharing their father’s passion. The Crystal Caves Gallery on Spence Street has been open for a year and the response from Cairns is overwhelming. “Most locals have been to The Crystal Caves in Atherton and are grateful that we now have a shop in Cairns where they can purchase the same natural and unique jewellery and gifts that they have come to expect from The Crystal Caves,” says Ghislaine.

124

Why build The Crystal Caves in the Tablelands? “Because it’s our home.” René and wife Nelleke had always longed for the warmth of the tropics. In 1963 they decided to move the family out of Holland in search of warmer climates, settling in Atherton. For many tourists, The Crystal Caves is the main drawcard to visit the Tablelands. Home to the Largest Amethyst Geode in the World: “The Empress of Uruguay” Standing over three metres tall, this breathtaking and stunning beauty commands the title she is given. Despite protest from his wife, René couldn’t resist The Empress’ charms. “A friend offered it to me at a very good deal. When I saw the picture, I knew I had to have it.” On His Favourite Places to Explore: “I love Uruguay, and Brazil is fascinating.” “Mexico is the place for crystallised mineralogical specimens. I took my first trip was to Mexico in 1973.” “Many species and samples cannot be found in such purity as in Madagascar.” René’s Next Adventure: “I will be going to Southern Brazil for a documentary on how Amethyst Flowers are mined. Amethyst Flowers are extremely fragile, and must be mined most delicately.”

What is the best piece of advice you would give to a new rider? When it comes to mountain biking always ride with a friend so you can do the sign language of how you nearly crashed or just plain nailed it. Or someone to laugh at you when you end up in the dirt in an embarrassing way.

What did you do before you started in the bike industry? Warehouse Manager and Purchasing Officer for Queensland Health.

What do like to do in your spare time? Mountain biking, road riding, Beach Volleyball. Just keeping as fit as time permits.

What are you passionate about? Mountain bike holidays are my passion this year and all things cycling. As well as trail maintenance on the tracks we use. Many volunteers have kept our trails and clubs going over the years and they deserve a big thanks.

Shane Tibbs & Associates Financial Planning Here are just a few reasons why I believe everyone should use a Financial Planner. There are countless others but these 3 are a combination of: what is the flavor of the month, what is most common and what everyone can benefit from.

1.

TTR Strategy – Transition to Retirement Why are so many investors considering this strategy?

A transition-to-retirement pension enables Australians aged 55 or over to access their super in the form of a pension (also known as an income stream) without retiring or satisfying an additional condition of release. Although some individuals use TTR’s for a gradual transition into retirement, the majority use the strategy for boosting super savings and tax minimisation. One of the more popular TTR strategies is to salary sacrifice into your super fund up to your concessional (before-tax) contributions cap, and replace that income with tax-free (if over 60) pension payments, or concessionally taxed pension payments (if under 60). The right combination of salary and super will depend on your salary level, your age, your tax position, the size of your super benefit and your income needs. • salary sacrificing reduces a person’s taxable income while the sacrificed contributions reside in a concessionally taxed environment. • earnings on pension assets are tax-free within the fund, and the earnings on contributions will be subject to up to 15% tax compared to a person’s marginal rate of tax on income outside the fund. • pension income paid from a TTR to a fund member is tax-free for over60s, which means tax is payable only on the reduced taxable income from a person’s salary. (For under-60s, pension income still forms part of an individual’s assessable income and the individual is eligible for a 15% pension offset/rebate.)

2.

Why insure through super? There are benefits in getting insurance through super:

• It’s often cheaper because super funds purchase insurance policies in bulk • There may be a tax advantage because the premiums are paid from your super account, not your after-tax income • You can get the cover you need for you and your family, even if money is tight • It’s easy to manage because premiums are automatically deducted • Some funds automatically accept you for cover without requiring a health check However, you also need to be aware that: • The types of insurance available are limited • The level of cover may be limited • If you move to a different super fund or your employer’s super contributions stop, your cover may end without notice • If you have more than one super fund you may be paying for insurance in each fund, which may be an unnecessary cost • Tax may be payable on some benefits • There can be delays in the payment of life insurance benefits as these go to the fund first, who then distribute them to you or your

beneficiaries • If you do not make a binding beneficiary nomination, or your fund does not offer binding nominations, the super trustee will decide who gets your benefits when you die. Usually benefits are paid to dependents, after taking your wishes into consideration • If your super recipient is not a dependent consider getting financial advice as there may be tax implications In summary there are considerable advantages in catering for your insurance needs inside of Superannuation but there is a lot more going on. Your Planner can show you where the pitfalls are in the standard types of insurance that come within Superfunds and show you how you can get the best of both worlds; the right type of cover with the right level of cover, still enjoy the benefit of having the premiums paid out of your super contributions or your employer super contributions…….get advice – the consequences are too great.

Why I like Managed Funds

Some investors like to go it alone. My thoughts are that they do so because they have not yet been with a Financial Planner and so have not understood what Managed Funds are about or being charged a fee seems to alarm people. Managed Funds generally charge a percentage fee across the value of the investment and when shown on the annual statement in dollar terms, which is required by law, it looks a lot. This leads investors to believe “it can’t be that hard”, so they have a go themselves.

Firstly let me say something about fees – Managed Funds by law must disclose all fees. It wasn’t all that many years ago when they did not have to do this and it appeared everyone was happy, funny enough; when the law changed, so did people’s attitude. What’s interesting is that the cost of managing funds has not really changed over that time. Let’s look at another type of investment that does not have to disclose the mark up or benefit received by the bank or institution; perhaps Term Deposits. As we know Banks and other lending institutions offer a rate of interest to investors in order to attract lump sum funds that they can then lend out. Now in order for the bank to make money on the transaction, we can conclude that the interest rate offered on the Term Deposit has to be lower than the lending rate. For example the difference may be anything from 0.1 to 2 or even 3%. The point is, the Bank does not have to disclose to the investor what their mark-up is and so it appears the transaction is fee free. So how do managed funds actually work? Managed funds pool the money of individual investors. The combined capital is invested by a professional fund manager, in some cases being applied across a range of asset classes such as shares, bonds, property and infrastructure assets. Managed funds are popular with investors as they make it easy to invest. One transaction can provide access to a range of underlying investments and to diversify your investment across different asset classes and market sectors. They also provide access to investments that may otherwise be out of reach. When you invest in a managed fund, you are allocated a number of shares or units in the fund. Each share or unit represents an equal portion of the fund’s value. You may receive regular payments – called dividends or distributions – from the fund, based on the profit or income it receives from the underlying investments. Most people’s superannuation money is invested in Managed Funds and they probably don’t even realise what they are.. KEY FEATURES Ease of diversification Investing in a managed fund can give you access to a diversified portfolio in one trade. You can also use managed funds to spread your risk across different asset classes. Professional management The fund’s portfolio is managed by a professional fund manager who trades and monitors assets on your

behalf, and who may conduct their own research and investigation as a part of their regular routine to assist with forming their view on investment prospects. Access to a wide range of investments By pooling the resources of multiple investors, managed funds enable you to access a range of investments, such as industrial property (commercial, shopping centres or office blocks) or infrastructure (toll roads, gas pipelines or airports), that may not be affordable or available to

individual investors. Security and disclosure Managed funds must comply with various regulatory bodies in Australia ensuring a high level of scrutiny. So in summary we can conclude that they are in expensive, offer greater diversification, provide instant liquidity (non-super) and are professionally managed. So for me I think when people don’t want to use Managed Funds, it’s because they don’t understand them.
