Do you want to ‘turn heads’ at your next work function or friend’s party? Do you think your size, shape or height won’t let you do this?
The secret is to buy well! That is, to buy what fits YOU well, what you are comfortable in and if your budget is tight, buy a style that is timeless & layby if necessary, so you can collect those compliment for years. Chances are, you don’t always socialise with your work colleges plus you may have several groups of friends out of work, so clever ladies will work with the same core piece to match the occasion. Some prefer the casual look, others like to frock up but the same versatile garment can work for both. You can dress a stunning maxi UP with bling and expensive shoes for a cocktail party. Dress a stunning maxi DOWN with pretty thongs and colourful bangles for that ‘understated elegance.’ Or if you are more comfortable in pants, consider two great tops plus a fab print pant! It’s the initial clever purchase plus a smart mix of accessories that will see you through. Either way, put on your confidence smile and take those compliments!

Interest Rates
Look outside the top 4 banks.
Understand and know what rate you’re paying.
Pay your loan off weekly or fortnightly, rather than monthly.
Are you getting a fair rate?
When interest rates drop, maintain the same repayments to pay your loan off sooner. Choose a loan with an offset or redraw facility. Put your salary into your home loan and then use an interest free period credit card to cover your day to day expenses. Then use your offset or redraw account to pay off your credit card debt before you incur interest costs.
If you’re offered a better rate elsewhere, negotiate with your current lender - if they value you as a customer, they’ll do everything they can to match your new rate. Otherwise;

Word on the Street, What Everybody’s Talking About…
Word of mouth is one of the most powerful influences for consumers today. How many times have you turned to friends for recommendations for the best food, coffee, salon, or where to get your car fixed? The eruption of social media makes it easy for us to get the best advice and opinions from friends we know and trust. This month, we turned to social media to get the people’s picks for these popular top favourites on where to go and who to see.
Scene Hair Writing & Photography
By Stacy Wong
“Where do you get your hair done?” It’s not uncommon to hear this question as we’ve all asked it before, admiring someone’s swoon-worthy locks. Finding the right stylist you can confide in and trust with your life – for some of us, our hair is our livelihood – is like finding true love. We turned to social media to find out which hair salon people recommended – and if there’s anyone people love more than their partners, it’s their stylists. According to popular vote, Scene Hair was consistently voted in the top ranks.
“We provide our customers with the ultimate in hair pampering, offering a high standard of service. We’re proud to have an outstanding team of talented, experienced and friendly stylists in an elegant and sophisticated environment,” says owner Raewyn Goldberg. “Our clients enjoy our intimate boutique style environment, and our highly skilled team is committed to providing the ultimate salon experience. Our stylists are dedicated to creating cutting edge styles and colour. At Scene, the emphasis is on you, and we strive to have each and every client walk out of our salon feeling at his or her best.” Some of the services/products offered by the Scene team include: • A face and hair analysis consultation with your favourite stylist – who will help you to decide on a style and colour that best fits you. • Hair straightening treatments – vital in our Cairns climate to keep frizzy hair at bay. • Hair extensions – for that extra glam • A beautiful range of Schwarzkopf colours – designed to give you a customized unique look.

Tia’s Café
Writing & Photography
By Stacy Wong
Amongst the takeaway shops on Sheridan, you might miss this little gem that’s tucked away in a parking lot next to the laundromat. Word of mouth brought us to Tia’s, and our tastebuds were exceedingly pleased. Tia’s may have been voted Best Asian Takeaway, but in our opinion, it takes the lead as best takeaway, period.
Tia’s is unfussed with plastic lined tables; there’s no need for fancy décor here. The food is enough to impress your senses. Vincent Tia and his wife Arisa opened Tia’s in April of last year. This charming café is completely family-owned and operated, with family members bustling behind the scenes and Arisa as the mastermind in the kitchen. Combining their multicultural family backgrounds (Vincent is Laos-Chinese and Arisa is Thai) the couple has come up with a winning Asian fusion menu. “Customers love our food and the variety. It’s not just Thai/Laos/ Vietnamese on the menu. We have things to suit Aussie tastes, like the burger, fish and chips, and roast chicken. We get repeat customers who love the food and tell people about it. The taste brings people back,” says Arisa.
Vincent’s Favourite Dishes: • Crispy Pork (with extra chilli) • Thai Beef Noodle Soup (with slow cooked beef) Arisa’s Favourite Dish: • Whole Deep Fried Fish – “It’s always fresh, which tastes better. We use local reef fish, the large mouth Nannygai; it’s not farmed. I like how fresh and healthy is it. We can steam it for an even healthier option.”
“Our menu is very similar to what we eat at home. Arisa always loved to cook, so it came natural for us to open a café, so she could continue doing what she loves,” says Vincent.
Most Popular: • Hamburger – This burger’s flavour is exceptional with a hint of Asian spices. • Grilled Pork Chop with rice and egg • Diced Beef with Black Pepper and rice • Whole Roast Chicken – This Asian-style roast is often a sold-out favourite. It’s simply delicious with garlic and pepper – no stuffing, just piping hot chicken you can’t keep your hands off.
Arisa’s passion in the kitchen started when she was a young girl in Thailand. “I always helped my aunties in the kitchen when I was young. I learned a lot from them, and they taught me to cook everything from scratch; we didn’t have pre-made sauces. I don’t add MSG to my cooking, and we grow our own organic herbs in our own backyard,” says Arisa.
Our favourite: • Duck Curry with Pineapple & Lychee – A special dish that’s not on the menu, but should be. Arisa made this dish to satisfy the people’s request for curry. It seemed an odd combination, lychee and duck curry? But this dish won us over. It sings with a harmony of delicious flavours – tart pineapple, sweet lychee, juicy savoury duck, and creamy coconut curry – salivating yet?
A favourite amongst locals, Tia’s relocated from an inner-city shopping arcade to be more immersed the community. “It’s nice to get to know people. We get to know our customers, and see familiar faces. Some of our regulars come all the way from the Tablelands and Cooktown, just for the food and burgers,” says Vincent.

KWYOUR Auto LOCAL CAR SERVICING Repairs SPECIALIST & Services
It’s one of the most common questions, “Where can I find a good mechanic I can trust?” No matter what you drive, if you’re having vehicle troubles, you want a reliable auto mechanic to get you up and back on the road without a glitch. Finding the right auto mechanic will keep you worry-free and your vehicle running smoothly for years to come. Our poll showed that customers recommended KW Auto Repairs & Services (KW Auto) for its honesty and customer service. Writing & Photography
By Stacy Wong
KW Auto Repairs specialises in: - Vehicle Safety Inspection station - New Car Servicing - Air Conditioning - Carbon Clean - EFI & Auto Gas - Diesel Repairs - Engine Reconditioning
“We’re extremely overwhelmed and proud to think that customers do appreciate the effort that goes into the attention to detail at KW Auto,” says owner David Ware.
• Explanation of repair • Cost effective repairs • Nationwide 6-month warranty on all repairs.
KW Auto has been trading for over 20 years, but David and his wife Loralie took on delivery of the business on July 1st, 2012. David first started in the auto repair business as a driveway attendant from the age of 14, working his way up the ranks through to front counter operator. Persistence and hard work has brought him and his team to a reputable level of recognition within the Cairns community.
Drivers Tend to Neglect: The most consistent concern is the lack of priority to check tyre pressures.
“Everybody has a bad mechanical story, therefore we endeavour to create a positive informative experience. We try to show a true sense of value and integrity.” “Being a part of Repco Authorized Service group, our team is trained to the highest standard – we have access to a wide range of national databases and technical information to keep us at the forefront of industry requirement.” What keeps customers coming back? • Warm friendly service • Experience
David’s Advice: Your car is the second biggest investment you will make, therefore regular service and maintenance by industry-trained technicians equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment is vital to protect your motor vehicle. We suggest at minimum, a six-month or 10,000 km service interval to keep the safety of your vehicle maintained. When you have a day off work, you like to… Oh that one’s easy, either mountain bike riding with my son, or taking the dirt bikes out for a ride with the family. Best Local Retreat
Alamanda Palm Cove
By Stacy Wong
Just a 30-minute drive from Cairns, Alamanda Palm Cove is a tranquil resort nestled on the beach amongst the palms. This tropical retreat has been consistently been ranked at the top on TripAdvisor for the Top Hotels in Palm Cove. Alamanda is the perfect retreat for couples and families alike – offering spacious and luxurious apartment style suites, ranging from 85m2 – with one, two and three bedrooms options. Wide balconies and sweeping windows give way to stunning views across this beachfront getaway.
Lancemore Group took over the property in February 2014, renaming and rebranding the resort. With worldwide experience managing boutique hotels, general manager Ty Goulter heads the Alamanda team at the resort. “I wanted to bring more of a boutique resort environment. We had some change of staff, keeping some current staff and hand-selecting new staff who exemplify the culture of the guest experience. It’s going above and beyond; the staff makes every little difference,” says Ty. “Even when we don’t get things perfect, I hate the attitude of making excuses in this industry. I believe in apologising and making it right when we can.” Upon arrival, Alamanda offers cold fresh orange juice, and wet towel to wipe down and get refreshed. Attentive staff keep rooms fully-serviced and stocked daily. “With 60 rooms, it’s the biggest boutique resort, while still maintaining a personalised feel – I’m still able to meet all my guests.” “We’re lucky to have such a wonderful location. The resort is unique from others hotels. We have the only heated pool in Palm Cove. It is the only resort that is actually on the beach. Every room has two baths; his and hers, even the one bedroom suites.” “Most hotels would have noisy hallways, but Alamanda is open and breezy. The fresh breeze flows freely through open stairwells and halls; there’s no trapping of humidity.” Even at its busiest, the Alamanda resort remains tranquil, never feeling crowded. “The suites are so large, it doesn’t feel like they are crammed next to each other.” Three private pavilions overlooking the beachfront are available to rent – for couples massage, high tea, or relaxing. “We will accommodate every guest’s needs when possible. We offer a large DVD collection, book exchange, and even pillow library for sleeping requirements. Soon for young families, we’ll be offering strollers, play mats, baby baths, potties and safety gates.”
27
“The resort has always had a reputation for being a couples or honeymoon retreat, but we are re-orienting to accommodate families as well, while maintain the couples feel by keeping separate areas and strategically placing guests.” Alamanda Spa The Alamanda Spa is the best spa in the Far North Queensland with its unrivalled beachfront view. Rooms transform from serene sanctuary to open air haven with private bamboo shower overlooking the beach. This sanctuary offers the perfect rejuvenation you’ve been craving with indulgent treatments on the menu.

Whether it’s a flat white, cappo, espresso, or long black you’re after, people have long developed an intimacy with coffee. The ritual of the morning brew is an integral part of most people’s days, and coffee drinkers are devoted to their favourite spots. It’s not just the caffeine they’re after; it’s the familiar faces, the artistry of the brew, the warm atmosphere and sharing the moment with fellow coffee devotees.

feeling to be able to not only share our love for coffee with others through our products and discussion, but also reflect ourselves through the design of the shop.
New to the local coffee scene, Blackbird has only been open since August of this year, but has already gained a devout following – leading the People’s Choice for best cuppa. “It’s very humbling to have only been opened such a short time! We genuinely love what we do and we’ve been so lucky to meet such amazing people who come through our little shop – it just reflects how we feel every day!
What goes into making the perfect coffee? We don’t believe one coffee could be perfect or the best as there are so many unique flavours and combinations that can be created in roasting and blending. But to find that flavour in the beans that you want to share as a barista and keep it consistent means a lot of attention to detail with your coffee, equipment, your technique, down to the choice of milk, and understanding what your customer is looking for.
“We’ve both been in the industry a long time, and Blackbird has been a growing brainchild since we met each other. We love the story of coffee from the grower to the cup, and want to share that love and passion with others.” “We offer a good chilled out vibe tucked away off the main street, catering largely to the gluten free and vegan community – with quality and consistent products made with love. We’re not afraid to share our experience and knowledge – so when you buy beans from us, we want to make sure you’re going to get the Blackbird experience at home as well! It’s the small things we make count – attention to detail is key.” What’s it like running your own coffee shop? It’s as any new business would be, especially with a very young family – but it’s an amazing

What are the favourites on the menu? Our favourite coffee is our fair-trade organic house blend served as a magic, which you’ll have to come in to discover what it is. Our chai is made with real tea leaves and spices – it’s to die for; Affagatos made on top of quality Nutella gelato; organic tea; and 70% specialty grown dark hot chocolates...we could keep going but those are a couple of our favourites! Without coffee, your lives would be... Extremely different! It was because of coffee that we met each other and therefore our family and this dream was born. Coffee has always through history been a social beverage and brought people together. We are so thankful it brought us together; we wanted that to be a main focus and part of our business.

MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design
With Melissa we wanted to keep the length but refine, smooth and Control her locks. With the Styling we used a smoothing Balm and intensiveTreatment to smooth out and add control to the hair. We stretched the hair for a sleeker look near the roots and added body with tussled curls to finish.
Colour Specialist
We wanted to keep a nice Dark Glossy Base to Melissa’s hair but add a little Wow factor. So we Pre Lightened panels through the ends first and then applied a Custom Made Rich Magenta Pink Overlay. This is on Trend and gave Melissa that Wow Factor she was looking for.
Make Up Artistry
For Melissa’s makeup we wanted some subtlety but something to make those Blue eyes pop! We started by evening out her skin tone and adding a touch of blush and bronzer to contour those beautiful cheekbones, for her eyes we wanted a delicate pink Smokey effect. With pink and Toffee shades complementing her bright blue eyes and making them sparkle. We also filled in and sculpted the brows giving them more definition. To finish a touch of natural pink lipstick and a light application of mascara and eyeliner.

Dr Dragi Simjanoski M.B.B.S., is a Cosmetic Practitioner with over 20yrs experience who believes that the way to achieve the best possible results for you lies in the combination of an understanding of your particular cosmetic requirements, proven experience and use of the latest technology in order to create a natural and beautiful result. Faye Pieria Costello, is an Award Winning Therapist with over 8 years experience both locally and overseas. Faye has developed and run a salon that offers the highest quality European skincare and specialised Facials using internationally recognised facial machinery to get the best possible results for you.
Why did you decide to go in to partnership? We met several years ago and discovered a mutual desire to work in a business that was able to offer its clients all facets of beauty enhancement in the one location. We soon realised that combining our skills into one business could achieve just this .... and so the idea of Revolution began. Why rebrand Guinot Beauty as Revolution? We wanted to modernise and update the branding to reflect the new partnership between us. What services do you now offer? As well as all the existing facial treatments that were on offer at Guinot Beauty, Revolution now also offers anti-wrinkle treatments, dermal fillers and lip enhancement. How do you see the partnership benefiting your clients? We believe that the new partnership allows us to truly offer our clients a complete facial solution – we can address both the skin quality and the facial shape and wrinkles. We can work together to produce the best results for our clients. The combination of cosmetic and traditional beauty treatments allows for much more dramatic improvements. What is a popular misconception about cosmetic injectables that you would like to educate people on? People see the results of a lot of bad cosmetic injecting when looking at pictures of the stars in

the media world. Duck lips and frozen faces can put people off the idea of cosmetic injectables. What people don’t realise is that it is not the product at fault, just that there is an art involved in achieving a natural but enhanced look. The product alone cannot solve the issue it is about HOW it is injected. Cosmetic injectables are a non-invasive and relatively pain free way of achieving subtle but noticeable improvements to your face and lips. You can expect fantastic results as long as you go to someone appropriately trained who has the expertise to achieve what you want. What is the most rewarding part of your job? We get the most satisfaction from the results we achieve for our clients! There is nothing more rewarding than for a client to come to us for treatment and leave feeling happier and more confident in themselves. What is the one mistake you see time and time again that you wish you could educate people on? Getting regular facials! So many people see getting a facial as a luxury. In my opinion it is a necessity if you want to look and feel healthy, youthful and have a glowing complexion. Living in the tropics our skin becomes very congested with the high humidity and constant exposure to the sun. This applies to men as well as women especially those working outside and using sunscreen regularly.

als Spring/Summer Festiv As the weather heats up, our ears are buzzing as excitement for music festival season kicks off. • DO charge your phone BEFORE leaving home - otherwise how else are you going to post selfies of you and your gang, or video your favourite performer. Gone are the days of waving a lighter in the air, its now a sea of phones! Photo credit: Brad
• DON’T try & see everything – it’s easy to get over-excited and try to see everything, but you will end up missing the best bits. Pick your favourites, and then just follow the crowds to see something new.

• DO choose your outfit wisely - no point in wearing pretty sandals or white shorts if you’re going to be stomping around in a muddy field, and no one wants to be the girl wearing sequins to a rock concert. • DON’T forget to fuel up - make sure you get a good night’s sleep the night before and a big breaky into you, chances are you won’t be eating or sleeping again any time soon. • DO be sun smart - Wear a hat or sunscreen, and get some shade and water during the day. Nothing worse than not making it to the end of the day because you’re cooked!

ARTS CENTRE
INTERVIEW with
playing this month After a hiatus from performing together, revered musicians stringmansassy have reunited and are heading to Cairns for the final Jazz Up North Series show at Tanks Arts Centre for 2014. The duo – featuring Aaron Hopper (guitar) and Kacey Patrick (vocals) – are no strangers to Far North Queensland and have great memories of performing as part of the acclaimed series in the past. This year they’re bringing with them a swag of new, previously unheard material, and the classic tracks that have earned them such a stellar reputation. This Jazz Up North Series show is part of a ‘mini’ tour of Queensland to preview some of the material the duo hope to record in 2015. “We’ll also revisit some of our favourite stringmansassy repertoire – Beautiful Day, Dragonfly, Fragile – we can’t leave those off the concert program,” says Kacey. “Cairns holds so many special memories for us. We’ve performed alongside some amazing musicians in the region and met beautiful people who have become important parts of our lives. We’re so excited to be returning to the North – excited doesn’t quite cover it – more a feeling of my heart is about to burst!”
stRingmansassy
stringmansassy launched their sound in the Brisbane music scene and have since been asked to perform at some of Australia’s most prestigious venues and festivals. Their unique musical arrangements have seen them earn acclaim for not only their impressive back catalogue, but also their unforgettable live performances. The duo are inspired by the likes of Bobby McFerrin, Ella Fitzgerald and Sting, to name a few.
FRIDAY 7 NOVEMBER
If you’ve never experienced the sophistication of this much-loved & recently reformed duo, here is a very rare occasion to catch their magic! Aaron Hopper (guitar) & Kacey Patrick (vocals) are stringmansassy – unique musical arrangers who’ve transcended their roots of jazz and folk to create a music described as spellbinding! They have toured internationally and throughout Australia, playing at some of the country’s most prestigious venues & festivals and now they are returning to the Tank 5 stage!
Taking a break from performing together gave Aaron and Kacey the opportunity to pursue individual side projects, and most importantly, raise their families. Recently Kacey has been expanding her talents to include playwright, music director, a choir and drama teacher, a producer and an event co-ordinator. She continued to perform in many different guises, such as with Women In Voice and The Saruzu Quartet. Aaron has also been keeping busy, teaching guitar, performing as both a solo artist and in an ensemble and songwriting for a variety of different projects, from dance groups to guitar orchestras. Most recently he has been teaching at the Conservatorium of Music in his new hometown of Bathurst and has also taken on roles as a musical director for festivals such as River Dreaming and Inland Sounds of the Sea. The hiatus has proved incredible fodder for ideas and the two have been reinspired to create new material. “We’re refreshed and full of years of ideas, new material and renewed energy,” says Kacey. “Neither of us have ever been able to completely step away from our collaboration and over time this has resulted in the realisation that we’re not finished with stringmansassy. We’ve got so much more we want to do as an ensemble and we’re bringing our life experiences and challenges from the last six years to the new work. We’re really excited to focus our energies into stringmansassy once again.”

DISH of the MONTH
BORZI’S DISH OF THE MONTH: CHILLI MUD CRAB (Serves 4) Photography by Stacy Wong
INGREDIENTS
This dish by our local Master Chef, STEPHEN BORZI is bursting and dripping with flavour. Don’t mind the mess – it’s finger-licking good.
3 live mud crabs ½ cup vegetable oil 3-6 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 2 brown onions, roughly chopped 4 -8 red chillies (depending how hot you like) ¼ cup fresh ginger, small pieces Handful of the coriander stalk chopped 2 tsp dried shrimp paste or fish sauce 1 cup tomato sauce (ketchup) ½ cup sweet chilli sauce ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup white sugar 1-2 tablespoons sugar salt & pepper to season Couple handfulls of cherry tomatoes, halved Handfull of coriander leaves to serve Steamed rice (or Angel hair pasta)
PREPARATION Put the mud crabs in the freezer for about 1 hour until they are unconscious. Remove the crab’s top shell, remove the gills (the little grey fingers) & any muck by rinsing very lightly under running water. Using a cleaver or large knife, cut the crabs in half lengthways, then cut into three on each side. Break the claw legs down & crack the claws with the back of a knife, so they open a bit to let in the sauce. Place the onion, chilli, garlic, ginger & coriander stalks in a food processor and process to a puree. Heat the oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Add the onion, chilli, garlic, ginger & coriander puree (& the shrimp paste if using), and fry for 6-7 minutes until most of the liquid has evaporated & the paste begins to change colour. Add the tomato ketchup, sweet chilli, soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, salt & pepper (fish sauce if using.) Mix through well and bring to simmer. Add the crab & cook, covered, over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until the shells turn red & the crab is cooked through. Halfway through cooking add the cherry tomatoes – it adds a freshness to the dish. Serve with steamed rice & garnish with coriander. (I sometimes use angel hair pasta instead of rice for something a little different & to soak up all the juices).

By Stacy Wong
Located at the heart of the city, is Cairns’ ultimate entertainment venue, Gilligan’s – one of Queensland’s largest, with a capacity of 2000 people, containing state-of-the art audio visual and lighting equipment. But for those looking to raise the stakes, tucked atop Gilligan’s is a luxurious and stylish premier lounge experience at The Attic. Since opening nearly five years ago, The Attic has been a favoured playground for the city’s finest. This year has seen some dramatic changes; over the past 4-5 months The Attic has undergone a major refurb, adapting to the tastes of its elite clientele. “We’re always looking to improve our product. The Attic has been open nearly 5 years now – it’s time to evolve and move forward. We’ve taken influences from venues around the world and made them unique to The Attic,” says Zac Ross, Gilligan’s Entertainment & Marketing Manager. “The Attic has changed the booth layout to make the room more spacious, and the booths more comfortable for table and bottle service. The main bar has been extended for more service area, new ‘interactive’ wall paper and a massive new lighting upgrade!”
VIP Experience at The Attic The Attic offers multiple options for every special occasion; an impeccable venue with plush booths, function seating, runway, lush adorned walls, and brilliant LED lighting dripping from the ceiling. Kick back in a luxe booth; letting The Attic staff treat you and your guests with attentive VIP personal service from the most friendly bottle service waitresses. VIP booths offer sparkling views across the club, just steps from the dance floor. “The Attic is classy but fun. That’s what we are all about. As the night rolls on, club mode begins as our lighting show kicks into action – with music on deck from top local DJs and the pinnacle in touring DJs. Kick the night off with cocktails; get pampered like a VIP with The Attic’s bottle service packages.” “Let us take care of you! One of our waitresses will keep your drinks topped up, so you don’t have to fight through the crowd. You’re free to sit back and chat with friends, or dance the night away. Whether it’s catching up for drinks with friends, a birthday or work function – we have a variety of pre-set and custom packages to suit your needs for your special event.”

Our pool area is a work in progress and we plan to put on some day parties in the near future. It’s such a great spot – we would be crazy not to take advantage of this!”

The Attic will accommodate your function needs with: catering & beverage packages, microphones, projectors, theme décor, additional seating, and any special requests to help build packages to suit your needs. This month, Gilligan’s celebrates its 11th Anniversary! “11 years is a great achievement for us. It’s not often you hear of businesses or venues with that life span these days. We are committed to being here for a long time; having the support of the locals and tourists is a massive compliment to the work we put into achieving this milestone.” “Hard work has brought us to where we are. We aim to cater to everyone and try to keep our entertainment offerings diverse. We are committed to bringing quality acts to Cairns, always looking out for the next big thing to keep that momentum ticking forward. However, it’s not all about weekends and big acts, we are a 7-nighta-week business and every night has to be a party and fun for everyone!”

here can you taste the freshest grass-fed beef, the sweetest prawns, the crunchiest fresh fruit and vegetables, spiced up with locally grown pepper, chilli and ginger? You’ll be on the right track to finding a restaurant that buys and cooks local when you see the colourful Taste Paradise “plate” logo. Around 60 producers, restaurants, cafes and resorts have banded together in a regional food network that connects the freshest and tastiest of our diverse tropical produce with the consumer, whether local or visitor. There are fishers in the Gulf, tropical fruit growers on the Cassowary Coast, chocolate, pepper and vanilla producers in Mossman, Mission Beach, Silkwood and Babinda, biodynamic dairy and eggs, free-range pork and seasonal vegetables from the Tablelands, and a stunning array of condiments, jams, dips and other foods that showcase the unique bush and tropical flavours of the north. International and national market research consistently tells us that we want authentic local food when we travel – it’s all part of the unique experience we crave. Tourism Australia recently launched Restaurant Australia (#restaurantaustralia) to match consumer expectation with Australia’s incredible culinary offerings. They found that for those people who have visited, Australia is ranked second across the 15 major markets for its food
and wine experiences (60%) behind France and ahead of Italy (third) and for visitors from China, USA, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia the UK and South Korea, Australia is ranked as the number one destination for food and wine (www.tourism.australia.com). The Taste Paradise logo on a menu, deli or supermarket item guarantees it is grown and produced locally in tropical North Queensland (members must be accredited). The aim is to meet the demand from locals and tourists for an authentic Tropical North Queensland dining experience while at the same time supporting a resilient, vibrant and diverse agricultural industry that, along with tourism, underpins our local economy. The network not only links producers with chefs. A series of speciallydeveloped food trails heading out of Cairns in all directions (http://www. tasteparadise.com.au/taste-of-the-tropics-food-trails/) helps travellers find local weekend markets and farm gate sales for a unique sensory adventure while on the road. MOVEMBER Every year since 2003 you may have noticed men growing a bit of fuzz on their upper lips. This is to raise awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues in men. Movember started in Melbourne and has spread to become a global phenomenon. Over $580million has been raised world wide through sponsorship of this event. Nearly everyone knows someone with prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in men. The key to treatment is early diagnosis and that can be assisted by requesting a blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate examination (digital rectal examination or DRE) where a gloved finger is inserted in the bottom to check for abnormalities. The PSA test measures a substance which is made in the prostate and is found in the blood stream. Not all rises in PSA are because of cancer. Some may be from infection or other reasons. If there is suspicion, the diagnosis may then be made by taking a sample (biopsy) with a fine needle guided by ultrasound. That enables the type of cancer to be identified in order to plan appropriate management. Testicular cancer is a disease of young men and occurs in the 15-45 age group. It is usually found when a lump is detected in the testicle either incidentally or it being noticed after a knock to the testicle. Testicle cancers are usually not
painful. Diagnosis is often assisted by ultrasound and blood tests which may show raised tumour markers. These are substances made by tumours which leak in to the blood stream where they can be measured. Testicle cancers should not be biopsied because that can spread the cancer. The testis is usually removed and a prosthesis (artificial testis) can be inserted to look normal. The good news is that around 97% of patients will live a normal lifespan with treatment which may also require radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Mental health problems are not always complained about by a large number of men. It seems to be considered as “weak” or “un-manly”. However, in recent times a number of high profile men have admitted to having various types of mental illness. Their courage in this respect should be admired and the benefit of their examples is to be praised and respected. Of course, this usually only comes about after quite a period of time. The first step is always the most difficult.

Braces have evolved dramatically over the last decade. Gone are the ‘metal mouth’ and ‘tin grin’ days, fast forward on to custom made self-ligating braces and invisible aligners. With modern day braces, people of all ages are choosing orthodontic treatment for a beautiful healthy smile. Orthodontists are dentists who are registered specialists in orthodontics. Orthodontists are university trained for an additional 2 to 3 years - the most qualified dental specialist to diagnose, prevent and treat any problems you might have with the alignment of your teeth and jaws. It is increasingly more common today to have adults seeking orthodontic treatment, with improved technology, braces have become much more practical and aesthetically appealing for all ages. The Australian Society of Orthodontics recommends that children should have their first orthodontic consultation by 7 years of age. This allows the orthodontist the opportunity to use preventative measures of interceptive treatment and/or advise on future orthodontic treatment needs.
Systems like Insignia, custom made brackets and archwires increase efficiency and reduce treatment time. For those who find it difficult to keep their teeth clean or don’t like the idea of having braces, Invisalign, also known as Invisible braces works by moving the teeth in a series of clear aligners. Not only is this option more aesthetically pleasing, patient’s can eat, drink and clean like normal.
If you would like to find out more book a free initial consultation with Dr Rhonda at nq ortho. We are not all born with great teeth, but our orthodontist can certainly help make it seem like we were.

ut that’s not a water tank...it’s a stress tank. Life’s stressors (both positive and negative) progressively fill up your stress tank. Sometimes the stressors are heavy, like a heavy shower of rain and so you tank fills more quickly. Sometimes the stressors are like drops of rain; drip, drip, dripping into your tank. Sometimes it’s both, but the result is the same... your tank starts filling up with stress. Now the gap between your stress level and the top of your stress tank at any given time, I call your tolerance level. As the stress fills your tank, the gap gets smaller... your tolerance goes down. Most of us rely on our tolerance levels to face the day to day stressors we all have to meet. But when the chips are down your stress level elevates and your tolerance gets lower, so you find yourself snapping at the kids, yelling at the dog, or at that fool of a driver in the other lane. Your concentration levels start to suffer as does your decisionmaking. Your overall effectiveness diminishes.
By Ian Ritchie
I often explain to clients how stress accumulates using the water tank analogy. A water tank sits beside a house and the water runs off the roof into it. A lot of rain produces a lot of water and the water tank fills up, eventually overflowing when full, or the tank may burst if it is damaged or unsound.
When your stress tank is full and overflows you experience stress breakdown which can be temporary (until the stress levels lessen) or more permanent (when your stress tank is broken). Either way you can no longer cope with day to day challenges and problems and your life is severely affected. Professional help and guidance is probably warranted when this happens. So what to do to avoid stress breakdown? Well back to the water tank. Most (old fashioned) water tanks have a tap on the side. Stress management is turning on the tap on our stress tank. You can turn it on full flood, but it’s better to turn it on every day, using coping strategies to address your stressors. Coping strategies are activities we do to cope with stress, such as exercise, yoga, meditation, relaxation, or pursuing meaningful leisure activities, hobbies and social outlets. All of these help to lower our daily stress build-ups, meaning we can stay focussed and capable of responding to whatever stressors come our way.

Navigating Australian immigration law can be complex and confusing and registered migration agents are available to help guide you through the immigration process.
A Migration Agent is someone who uses up to date knowledge of migration procedures to offer advice and assistance to a person wishing to obtain a visa to enter or remain here in Australia as a lawful non-citizen. Migration Agents can also offer assistance to companies and businesses nominating or sponsoring skilled overseas workers. In Australia only people registered as migration agents may provide immigration assistance. Migration Agents operating within Australia are required to be registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) which is the governing body for the migration advice profession. The OMARA set registration requirements for Migration Agents to enter the profession which include qualification requirements of either a current Australian Legal Practising Certificate or the Graduate Certificate in Australian Migration Law and Practice. Registered Migration Agents (RMA’s) must abide by a Migration Agents Code of Conduct at all times which sets standards of professional conduct that an Agent must abide by. As migration law changes frequently Registered Migration Agents are also

The Breathing Clinic
By Stacy Wong
Trouble catching your breath, breathlessness, and feeling like you’re short on air – it’s a disconcerting sensation. Imagine being trapped under water, trying to suck air in through a straw – that feeling of not being able to catch your breath, no matter how hard you try to breathe.

November marks the Australian Lung Foundation’s Lung Awareness Month, as well as World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day on the 19th. In this month’s health focus, The Breathing Clinic is our local lung health advocate, promoting lung health, and supporting those affect by lung disease. Fast Facts from the Australian Lung Foundation: • COPD is more common than most common types of cancer, road traffic accidents, heart disease, and diabetes. • 14% of all deaths in Australia are caused by lung disease, including COPD. What is COPD? COPD is a generic term that includes persistent lung conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD produces symptoms of breathlessness, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness similar to other pulmonary conditions including asthma. It is therefore important that a diagnosis of COPD is confirmed with a lung function test using a spirometer to distinguish it from other pulmonary conditions so the most appropriate treatment interventions can be recommended to optimise lung function, prevent deterioration, minimise exacerbations and support self-management and continued quality of life! What are the causes of COPD? Smoking is the most common cause of COPD. Other risk factors for COPD include exposure to indoor/outdoor irritant gases/fumes/dusts (e.g. occupational exposure to organic and inorganic dust in mining, farming and textile industries.) A genetic predisposition to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency can also be a contributing factor in the development of COPD along with other factors.
What should a person do if they feel they are at risk of COPD? The Breathing Clinic offers FREE COPD screening for anyone who has not previously been diagnosed with COPD. This is a simple, non-invasive lung function test recommended by the Lung Foundation of Australia. COPD screening is recommended for people over the age of 35 who experience at least one of the following: • Smoker or ex-smoker; • Currently work/previously worked in a job that involves dust/gas/fumes exposure; • Cough several times most days; • Cough up phlegm or mucus most days; • Get out of breath more easily than others of similar age; • Have frequent chest infections. What specialised services are provided at The Breathing Clinic? The Breathing Clinic is dedicated to helping people breathe with greater ease by offering a range of drug-free breathing techniques, exercises and programmes to help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life associated with a range of medical conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, snoring, sleep apnoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux, cardiovascular conditions and anxiety. All treatment options at The Breathing Clinic can be safely undertaken as an adjunct to the pharmacological treatment of medical conditions and are tailored to meet the specific needs of each client. Specialised programmes can be prescribed to: • Reduce breathlessness/breathing difficulty; • Optimise lung capacity; • Improve the metabolic efficiency of the breathing muscles;
74
CairnsLife
• Improve breathing muscle strength and exercise tolerance; • Reduce gas trapping and hyperinflation of the lungs; • Remove excess mucus from the airways; • Minimise irritation to the airways; • Improve nasal breathing when awake and asleep; • Optimise diaphragmatic breathing; • Improve core stability; • Reduce stress; • Enhance relaxation; • Reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. The Breathing Clinic also specialises in addressing chronic mouth breathing and nonnutritive sucking habits in children, which include prolonged thumb sucking, tongue sucking, dummy sucking and nail biting. These orofacial habits can adversely affect the form and function of the upper respiratory tract, which includes the oral and nasal cavities, contributing to crowded, crooked teeth, speech and swallowing problems, as well as sleep disturbances such as night terrors, bed-wetting, snoring and sleep apnoea. Spinal Injuries Australia Every day in Australia someone’s life changes in an instant due to a spinal cord injury. In many cases, these injuries could be avoided. This month, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week (9 to 15 November) aims to raise awareness about safety and injury prevention, along with educating people about what it means to have a spinal cord injury. Spinal Injuries Australia opened its Cairns office on Sheridan Street last year, joining a head office in Brisbane and an office in Townsville. The not-for-profit organisation provides a range of valuable services to people who have sustained a spinal cord injury including personal assistance in the home, at work and in the community, along with health and lifestyle advice. Spinal Injuries Australia’s mission is to empower people who have sustained a spinal cord injury to regain their independence. “There are more than 10,000 Australians living with a spinal cord injury and this number continues to climb, with around 350 to 400 people sustaining this injury every year,” says Spinal Injuries Australia North Queensland Regional Manager Graeme Kerkin. “Road trauma, water-related accidents and falls and crushes are the main causes of spinal cord injury in Queensland. At present, there is no cure for a spinal cord injury, so prevention is crucial.” Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week is an initiative of the Australian Spinal Injury Alliance, a collective of the country’s eight leading spinal cord injury-specific service providers – including Spinal Injuries Australia. What is a spinal cord injury? The spinal cord is like a fibre-optic cable that carries messages from your brain around your body. If the spinal cord is damaged through crushing, bruising or severing, the messages to and from the brain cannot get through. A person can sustain paraplegia or quadriplegia, depending on where their injury occurs. Generally speaking, if a person has paraplegia, they will lose function of their legs and part of their trunk. Quadriplegia occurs when there is a high-level injury to the spinal cord, and usually means that there is a loss of function in the arms and hands as well. The damage to the spinal cord may be complete or incomplete, depending on the degree of injury to the nerve fibres. An incomplete injury can result in some movement and sensation. A spinal cord injury is not just about never walking again and having to use a wheelchair -
there’s the loss of bladder and bowel function, independence, sensation, balance and your heating and cooling system, to name a few of the more ‘hidden’ physical effects. This kind of injury also has a profound impact on your family, friends, lifestyle, finances and the community. What services does Spinal Injuries Australia provide in Cairns? “Spinal Injuries Australia’s Cairns office was established to ensure our organisation could give our clients better access to our services,” says Graeme. “Presently, we have a Client Services Officer and around 40 Personal Support Workers in the region who work with our clients to assist them at home, at work and accessing their community. We also have an Occupational Therapist/Nurse who provides advice, prescribes equipment such as wheelchairs, home modifications and assists with funding applications. “We’re always looking to expand our services and extend them into remote and rural communities in North Queensland. Our team also provide the opportunity to offer placements for Occupational Therapy students; this assists them to gain specialist knowledge about spinal cord injuries at the same time as completing their University Degree requirements.” How can we support Spinal Injuries Australia? There are many services and programs of Spinal Injuries Australia that rely on the generosity of the community and corporate sponsors. This includes the Member Equipment Fund, which is the very last resort for people with a spinal cord injury who have exhausted all of their funding options and are in desperate need of vital equipment. Spinal Injuries Australia also runs an injury prevention program in schools across Queensland, with people who have a spinal cord injury speaking to primary and secondary school students about their own experiences and promoting safety. Cairns Skin Cancer Clinic
We are undoubtedly blessed to be living in beautiful Tropical North Queensland. However, exposure to the harsh tropical sun can also put us at risk of skin cancer. November 17th to 23rd marks National Skin Cancer Action Week, and Dr Patricio Gordillo from Cairns Skin Cancer Clinic is taking action in preventing and treating skin cancer in our community. Writing & PHOTOGRAPHY
By Stacy Wong
Despite national advertising campaigns warning against the dangers of the sun, people are still inclined to hit the beaches on any given sunny day. Sun bathing is still a favourite pastime, and clearly people are reluctant to heed the warnings of this dangerous activity. Even if you’re not out on the beach, it’s critical to wear proper sun protection and save your skin from the extreme UV conditions we face daily.
How often should people get their skin checked? “At least once a year, or more if your doctor advises. It is recommended everyone over 18 should have an annual skin check, as melanoma is the most curable cancer if diagnosed early. We all live busy lives, and it is easy to forget, but take the time to book one. The life you save could be your own.”
“In Australia, two out of three people are expected to have a skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old. Queenslanders in particular have the highest rate of melanomas in the world, with 2,500 Queenslanders diagnosed each year,” says Dr Gordillo.
Meet the Doctor Dr Gordillo moved to Cairns in 2005 and has become increasingly involved in skin cancer medicine. Dr Gordillo graduated from the University of Sydney in 1994 and gained his fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1998. Dr Gordillo obtained his Certificate of Advanced Skin Cancer Surgery from the Skin Cancer Society of Australia and his Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine from the Australasian College of Skin Cancer Medicine in 2011; not content to stop at that, Dr Gordillo completed his Advanced Diploma of Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery from the Skin Cancer College Australasia in 2012, and he completed his Diploma of Dermoscopy from the Skin Cancer College Australasia in 2013.
“The skin is the largest organ in the body. Just as you need to exercise and eat well to take care of your heart, your other organs and bones, a regular skin check needs to be part of maintaining overall good health. Regular skin checks are equally as important as other regular health checks.” “Early detection and treatment is the key to curing skin cancers. It is imperative to take good care of your skin - it is the organ that holds it all together.” Cairns Skin Cancer Clinic opened its doors to the community of Cairns and surrounding districts in August 2012. Dr Gordillo and his team are dedicated to prevention and treatment of melanoma, offering comprehensive skin checks, early detection, removal of skin cancers, mole removal, cryotherapy (freezing) of sun spots and biopsies of suspicious moles. Cairns Skin Cancer Clinic is fully equipped with an operating theatre, and has the latest in imaging and monitoring technology. Skin Cancer on the Rise “As the baby boomers age, the numbers of skin cancers detected are increasing steadily. Growing up in the 60s and 70s it was fashionable and considered healthy to have a tan. People sun bathed blissfully unaware of the dangers of solar radiation. Though this does not mean that the young generations need be complacent, as melanoma remains the most common cancer in the 15 to 44 years age bracket.”

RED CHAIR GALLERY – DI SANT
“
ARTIST: DI SANT
Photography by Stacy Wong
Art has been a passion all my life. As a young girl living on a goat farm in the outback, I would take charcoal from the wood stove to use for my first drawings. I was later introduced to the use of acrylics at school. I furthered my education in art by enrolling in Scott’s Correspondence College, where I studied oil painting. At TAFE, I completed Certificate III and a Diploma in Visual Arts.” “After a long break and a serious motor vehicle accident, I resumed my interest in art attending life-drawing classes with the late John Kibby. John’s guidance motivated me, and as a result I have held exhibitions in various cities around Australia including Newcastle, Brisbane, Winton, Melbourne, Sydney, Atherton and Cairns. I have also participated in overseas exhibitions in Canada, Papua New Guinea and study trips to Fiji and New Zealand. In late 2007, I participated in a workshop in a Provence in the South of France and in 2013 I conducted another in Greece.” “I enjoy working within a diverse range of media and subjects – my style varies from the portraits, landscapes, animals and impressions. My love of texture, and my passion for the oil medium will keep me exploring my artwork.”
The Red Chair Gallery, owned by Dominique Goninan, has moved to shop G28 The Pier, Cairns. This innovative Gallery features awardwinning and local artists, exhibiting: painting, sculpture, jewellery, fibre art, pottery, wood-art, recycled art, marble art, wire art, felting, glass art, cards, prints, etc. “The Red Chair Gallery is an outlet for local artists to promote and sell their work. In helping with the Gallery, I also teach the formalities of running a gallery, so that artists can feel confident to open and run their own gallery. We’re very fortunate with the support we have at The Red Chair Gallery – we’d especially like to thank The Pier, Cairns Potters Club, and the VAA (Visual Arts Association) for their support,” says Di. What makes a Master?
Who Are Masters?
Mastery is the ability to blend skills and knowledge in a specific area of practice – a profession, trade, athletics, science or the arts. Mastery is practice, not knowledge alone. Mastery of any field takes instruction, practice, stamina, setbacks, and intentionality.
Masters are the people at the “top of their game.” They have mastered all the essential aspects of their field. Masters are natural leaders and mentors. They raise the bar of achievement and pave the way for breakthroughs and innovation for those that follow.
Here we feature some of our local Masters – each with a deep command of the basic practices embedded in their trade or profession, experts and masters in their specific field.

Mind Matters Writing & Photography
By Stacy Wong
When young people face overwhelming stresses and mental health problems, Mind Matters is a welcoming space they can turn to for alleviating and managing whatever is worrying them. Set within a home, the office feels warm and inviting – a place where afflicted youth can feel comfortable and at ease. One in four young people will face a mental health issue at some stage in their life. Youth are even more vulnerable to mental health issues due to the various developmental stages they are encountering and the angst that comes with them. Mind Matters is a private psychology practice dedicated to helping these children, adolescents and their families with evidence-based therapeutic interventions to aid in developing skills to manage a healthy mind and lifestyle. “Unfortunately, this age group often do not access treatment in good time, meaning that they suffer longer and they also have difficulty finding a service that responds well to their needs,” says psychologist Nia Barnes. “At Mind Matters, we are sensitive to the needs of young people, their fears and anxieties. We endeavour to find solutions that are practical and to teach skills that will assist young people to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives.” “A healthy mind is vital for young people in particularly, in order to navigate successfully through the turbulent teenage years. If worries are on their mind, they may not get to experience life to the fullest and allow their brains to develop as they should,” says fellow Mindmatters psychologist Marijke Keller. With a combined experience of 22 years, the team of generalist psychologists at Mind Matters are trained in a number of therapeutic techniques tailored to each individual’s needs. “Sessions are tailored to suit each client. As well one-on-one sessions, we also work with our client’s family or partner to address issues that might be impacting on relationships and mental health. We believe that therapy is a dynamic process and what might be required in one session might not necessarily work in another. We like to be guided by our clients and so have a range of approaches to work with. We aim to give a fresh and determined approach to empowering our clients - because a healthy mind matters. “We have in the past been employed as school psychologists, and so we are familiar with the processes and procedures of the school environment. This puts us in a unique position where we can see the challenges faced by the children, the parents as well as the teachers. We work as mediators between all to achieve a common goal.” “We also have a keen interest in the human brain and in particular how the events of our past have contributed to the structural and functional development of our brain and nervous system. Recent developments in neuroscience inform our practice and we endeavour to ‘reach the mind through the brain’ facilitating long term changes.” Brain Based approaches include Neurofeedback and EMDR.
Neurofeedback Treatment Mind Matters also offers unique specialised Neurofeedback treatment for developmental disorders such as ADHD, ASD and for treatment resistant disorders such as OCD, PTSD. “Neurofeedback is a non-invasive alternative to medication – focusing on changing brainwave patterns to address difficulties. We’ve seen amazing changes in children who undergo this treatment” says Laura Phillips Neurofeedback Assistance. “It’s incredibly rewarding to hear the positive feedback from the children, their parents and their school”. What are the common mental health issues you encounter? Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health issues by far. From the global concerns of war and terrorism, to the more private concerns of ‘not being enough’ (smart enough, thin enough, funny enough, etc.) – life has become anxiety provoking. When we live in a state of anxiety for too long, it is not uncommon that the world becomes a bleak place to be in. Our drive is compassion. It motivates our desire to assist those whose lives have been complicated by adverse life events. It’s difficult for young people to face mental health issues on their own, let alone ask for help. How do you encourage youth/families struggling with it to seek help? You’re not alone! The first step is to talk to your GP. With a Mental Health Care Plan you can access a psychologist affordably through Medicare. There are also a number of free services available like Headspace, Lifeline, Beyond Blue and Kids Helpline. Often through just a few sessions you gain a different perspective and are ready to live life to the fullest. When to seek help? If you have concerns your child is experiencing any of the following: anxiety, sleep difficulties, behavioural problems, self esteem issues, grief and loss (including divorce/ separation), trauma and abuse, conflict/anger management, attention problems, peer relationships, stress, self harm and panic disorder.
EMDR EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a new and powerful therapy to help people let go of strong emotional pain. The therapy uses the brain’s own natural healing process to kick start the resolution of severe distress that has been “locked” in the brain in a way that has prevented the brain from healing itself.

Cruze Coffee
Barista Rhiannon Hill Writing & Photography
By Stacy Wong
It’s almost closing time at Cruze Coffee, and people are scrambling to slip in the doors to grab that last brew of the day. Cruze has a devoted following of coffee connoisseurs, and keeping them happily caffeinated is barista Rhiannon “Rhe” Hill. “Fun, bubbly, delicious – sounds like wine, but that’s how I’d describe Cruze,” says Rhe. Rhe herself is fun, bubbly and all smiles – everyone who steps foot into Cruze is greeted cheerfully by Rhe and the team at Cruze. Her energy is simply infectious. “I love coming to work, even when it’s pre-coffee at 5 a.m. If you don’t like what you do, it shows. I love what I do – socialising and making people happy. I try extra hard to make people feel comfortable, even if they’re having a bad day.” “My favourite part of the job is getting to please everybody, sounds cheesy, but having people leave satisfied is very important to me.” The beauty of Cruze is that your caffeine fix is totally tailored just for you. You not only pick your brew, but you pick the bean that is freshly ground and then brewed to your liking by the baristas. Rhe is always happy to guide you through the massive array of choices. “You can choose whatever you want, and it’s ground and brewed fresh for you. Customers get involved and it’s an interactive experience.” What makes her a Master Barista? Being open-minded – everybody has different tastes. Not everybody likes a strong brew; it’s being able to adapt to everyone’s individual tastes. I talk to people to find out their preferences and give advice, suggesting which bean and roast would suit them best. I remember everybody’s orders and names. “Rhe has all the qualities of an entrepreneur; passion and a very strong work ethic – she’s the first to arrive and the last to go. She stood out from day one, that was three years ago, and she still shines. She takes care of all the social media and help with admin. The success of social media and our Facebook is all her. Clients love her, and she leads the team by example. At such a young age, 21, she’s got youth, joy and happiness but she’s acquired so many entrepreneurial qualities and grown so much over these years. It’s a pleasure to have her on the team,” says Gil Risa, owner and founder of Cruze. Rhe’s favourite roast? Ethiopian Harrar – it’s earthy and strong
Visit Rhe and the team at Cruze for your next caffeine fix:
Rhe’s favourite brew? Macchiato – it’s like my morning party shot
105 Grafton St
What happens if Rhe doesn’t have coffee? I move a lot slower, and forget orders. It would be terrible for everybody, not just me. I usually have about three macchiatos throughout the day, sometimes it takes five, but that’s not often.

LAFEW with Lorna & Joshua
– owners of Lafew Teahouse & Kombucha Bar Photography by Stacy Wong
The best advice we have ever received was “To be the space that allows others to see who they are” Where did the name Lafew come from? Lafew stands for the elements of creation: Light, Air, Fire, Earth and Water. The alchemy through which we use the elements of creation is in the foods and drinks we serve. What is Kombucha? Kombucha is an ancient probiotic fermented living drink. Known in many cultures by many names, this fizzy elixir is one of the simplest and most effective drinks to revitalise and nourish your whole body. Kombucha bars are springing up around the world as more of us want to experience the health and vitality this delicious elixir provides. What are the health benefits of Kombucha? The health benefits of kombucha are phenomenal, and scientific research suggests it assists digestion due to the living colony of bacteria and yeast the good guys! Also known for it’s power to detoxify the body, strengthen the immune system, regulate blood sugar levels and alkalise the body, it also has an abundance of glucosamine and B-vitamins. High in cancer-fighting Glucaric acid, kombucha could well be heralded an adaptogen! What inspired you to open Lafew Tea House & Kombucha Bar? Before Lafew Tea House opened, we had consciously chosen to create a gentle and joyful lifestyle. Our little family has always loved to eat light, enjoying tasty meals and delicious snacks. Whether it’s an enlivened salad or a decadent chocolate cake so scrumptious it made us eat slower to prolong the experience, we knew we wanted to share this way of interacting with food with our community. Pre-Lafew, we enjoyed dining out in Cairns,
however too often it was only at home that we felt nourished and fulfilled. Feeling like tropical Cairns was missing something, we decided to create a place where we would like to eat out, and to inspire others to join us. How do you brew a perfect tea? To brew a perfect tea, be it kombucha, black, green or herbal, we bring an intention of wellbeing into the preparation. This truly elevates the experience and gives the drinker unique ingredients not available from a packet! Who do you look up to? Some of the great thinkers, artists and artisans of the word for their creative inspiration are Socrates, Da Vinci, Keats, Van Gogh and William Blake. And everyday people who are being the change they want to see in the world by the choices they make in their life. What is your fondest memory? One of my fondest memories is of a time whilst buying vintage furniture for our yet to be created Teahouse. We sat on a vintage sofa and described to each other a picture with the words of our vision for Lafew Teahouse & Kombucha Bar. It still makes me misty eyed when I think of those moments. Life without tea/kombucha is…. Life without tea is impossible! It’s such a wonderful daily experience that has been with us for a long time and is an integral part of our wellbeing, joy and play. Kombucha lives through history, and we intend to carry it through to the end of our days!

Debra Hayton
owner of Black Ivy Photography by Stacy Wong
How long has Black Ivy been open? Black Ivy opened its doors on 15th March of this year. What inspired you to open Black Ivy? I saw a need for an affordable & funky fashion store with a customer focus in Cairns. Describe Black Ivy in three words: Affordable, Funky, On Trend Describe your personal style: Funky, Comfortable, and ANYTHING Black Favourite accessories at the moment: Would have to definitely be my Mighty Purse from Black Ivy – it charges you mobile phone, LOVE IT!
What are your favourite upcoming trends? Black & White is huge at the moment, and will continue on through summer. I’m excited about the black & white stripe, full-length playsuits that will be in store in the coming weeks. What trend sells best at Black Ivy? At our prices, EVERYTHING sells well! But I’d have to say playsuits are always on demand. If your house were on fire, which two items would you save from you closet? Knowing me, I would throw as many black items of clothing out the window to save them all! But I would really have to save my bridesmaids dress for my sister’s upcoming wedding. (If I lost that, she might burn my house down anyway, LOL!)

“Unique & Boutique”
Photography by Stacy Wong
Edge Hill Hairdressers
Unique & Boutique – A first for Australia in Cairns.
“Boutique this!” and “Boutique that!” is the elegant way of Europe. Boutique coffee shops, restaurants, shoe stores, clothes, and now hairdressers are getting into the act. Everyone wants this personal, sophisticated service, which is unique to boutique. Edge Hill is where this is happening in Cairns. Edge Hill is having a facelift, creating a village atmosphere, which everyone loves. Breakfasting at the coffee shops, pumps from 6am in the village, and the restaurants are frequented by locals and visitors alike, both for lunch and dinner. What does the word “Boutique” mean? An exotic small-scale business or shop, serving a sophisticated clientele, with specialised products and services. This description perfectly describes the new Edge Hill Hairdressers (EHH), owned and “operated only” by Christopher Hilton and his wife Victoria. The salon’s décor is luxuriated with imported Italian white porcelain floor tiles, Arabescato Corchia marble front desk, Bisazza wall tiles – all from Italy. The salon furniture is from Malletti, in Milan, and is their latest collection. Beautiful lighting and Queensland plantation shutters add that tropical private touch. EHH is full of firsts: 1. Clients served with tea/coffee in Wedgewood china 2. The salon is open from 9am to 9pm – by appointment – European sensible hours for your convenience. 3. We will be opened on all public holidays for you and your guests, by appointment. EHH is “The High-End Boutique Salon in Cairns” remembering that boutique means small shop, we are not out to compete with large salons. Small, Unique, and Boutique, in the village, that’s us.
88
European ideas have been spreading across the globe for many generations, but something that has really stuck and has become fashionable again, is the French word “Boutique.”
4. Upon finishing your salon service, EHH has an exclusive perfume bar, where clients may refresh before they leave. This is a complimentary service and most boutique. The salon uses TIGI products. Copyright colours and gloss naturals are a big hit to those in the know. TIGI is a smart sophisticated and talented young premier hairdressing company from London. They are simply the best and have the most creative cutters in the world; everyone is influenced by TIGI. “As well as our business, EHH being born in 2014, another first for Cairns is the exclusive Hair Reborn by TIGI. This product was launched with our appearance in Edge Hill.” Hair Reborn introduces the latest hyper-distillation technology in hair caring. This is an exclusive purification process where the finest raw materials are extracted, intensified and concentrated into their most potent form to create advanced formulations, introducing the finest active ingredients, and also lipid and protein replenishment. The products contain beeswax, purple orchid, babassu oil, geranium seed oil, and micro-marine compound. The hairspray also contains optimegas. Christopher and Victoria have researched cutting, colour, and these new sophisticated boutique products, to bring the best to their Cairns clientele. “We both love hairdressing, and especially to have the time to be creative, and bring that unique boutique experience.”

How did you get into the business? I’ve wanted to open my own place for the past 6 years. It’s just been a matter of finding the right place at the right time.
Why did you open on Lake Street? Our location on Lake Street is the perfect spot for locals to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy areas while still being centrally located.

“No plastic bar this one, it’s the real McCoy.”
McGinty’s
Irish Bar “There’s no place like McGinty’s, at least not North of Malin Head, East of Wicklow, South of Mizen Head or West of the Dingle Peninsula.” “No plastic bar this one, it’s the real McCoy.” “McGinty’s is already attracting local Irish, folk and other musicians in Cairns and region. We always welcome visitors, yez won’t want to go home at the end of the night.” McGinty’s Irish meals, both liquid and hearty, will fill you with sustenance from the Emerald Isle. McGinty’s is the brainchild of owners Paddy Anderson, Robyn Moore and Helen Guo.
Since it’s opening on June 6th, McGinty’s Irish Bar has already become the home pub of many local Irish (and many other types of locals), and McGinty’s is quickly growing quite the following. McGinty’s emanates the true pub atmosphere you have been looking for.
What inspired you to open McGinty’s? We all have a love of Irish music, and Paddy plays the button accordion like a demon. So really the inspiration was the music. We had many discussions about opening the sort of bar that fills a gap in Cairns’ entertainment options. We love that McGinty’s has become a favourite place for so many people already. It is a growing family of people who appreciate the great atmosphere and the focus on people. Favourite menu items? Favourites are Guinness (best in Australia, we’ve been told), Kilkenny, Little Creatures, 150 Lashes and Stella - all on tap! Excellent!

Describe McGinty’s in 3 words? Friendly. Lively. Joyful. “Come down for a drink with the best craic and the finest mob you’re ever going to meet.”

For thousands of years we have utilised the benefit of massage for our own health. Now our modern day dogs are enjoying their own style of canine therapy. Massage is becoming widely recognised as an instrumental element in the proactive strategy of caring for dogs.
T
hey are being stroked and stretched to increase their lifespan, improve muscle and joint function and assist in post-surgery recovery. Canine behaviour programs now incorporate massage as a valuable part of the training schedule. Working dogs, racing dogs, competitive dogs and domestic pets are all being introduced to the benefits of this ancient form of stretching and manipulation. Integrating massage into a daily routine allows for identification of changes in your dog’s skin and muscular texture and will determine any areas of muscle or joint soreness. It will assist circulation, stimulate the lymph glands, flush toxins from the system and facilitate muscle and joint flexibility. Regular treatment maintains structural symmetry which is another influential factor in sustaining optimum health throughout the ageing process.
Massage therapy is now being recommended by many people in the veterinary field as a complimentary treatment throughout the recovery process. Post-surgery this remedial routine assists in increasing blood flow, reducing inflammation and encouraging muscle and joint movement. Apart from the physical benefits it also promotes emotional well-being, which is another crucial aspect of recuperation. Canine behaviourists now integrate massage into their dedicated reform programs. This type of interaction is not only beneficial on a physical level but also contributes towards creating a sense of calm contentment in these dogs. This very personal interactive therapy complements the many essential elements of successful rehabilitation. Elite athletes in the canine world are being expertly prepared for physical exertion with controlled extension and manipulation of

muscles and joints. As a treatment that is introduced after strenuous exercise canine massage can contribute to a faster recovery and less repetitive injuries in our working dogs and competitive canines. Touch is one of the most effective methods of communication with your dog. Their skin is sensitive to being stroked, scratched, manipulated and massaged. This hands on approach to preventative care is opening the doors to a more holistic and natural way of life for our dogs. According to a recent survey, 35% of women wrongfully believe that balancing the weight of people in your car will help your tyres last longer, and 28% erroneously thought using premium fuel all the time makes your car run better. Ladies...!
Time for a crash course on how to better take care of your car. Here are 7 car-care tips. 1. Create a preventive maintenance checklist Have a car-care expert perform preventive maintenance services on a regular basis, such as topping off fluid levels, inspecting belts and hoses, checking tyre pressure and the engine oil, and making sure all the lights work. 2. Check your engine air filter The engine air filter is like the vehicle’s lung. Refer to your owner’s manual to see when it should be swapped out to ensure your car is breathing clearly. 3. Check your engine oil and filter Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. Check the oil level regularly and check your owner’s manual for when to change the oil and which grade to use. 4. Know how to check tyre pressure and change a tyre Having a flat tyre is never fun, but learning how to change it yourself can save a lot of time. Ask a car care professional to show you how. Make sure your tyres are filled to the proper tyre pressure as well. You can find the proper tyre pressure in the vehicle owner’s manual or on a plate in the door jamb or glovebo . Be sure to check and fill the spare tyre as well. 5. Control your fuel consumption To help your fuel consumption, be sure to observe the speed limit and ensure your tyres are properly inflated. Removing the extra weight from your trunk or back seat can also help. 6. Clean and replace worn wiper blades Wiper blades should be swapped about every six months. Check for cracks regularly, and clean dirty wiper blades with a wet paper towel. 7. Stay calm in an emergency Make sure your vehicle emergency kit is restocked. If you don’t have one, create one with items such as bottled water, a flashlight, flares, duct tape, energy bars, a blanket, phone number for roadside assistance and other emergency contact details.

4 Steps to De-Stress By Stacy Wong
Stress wreaks havoc on our bodies and minds. It’s easy to fall prey to its plaguing clutches. Don’t let stress ruin your day. Whether you’re at work, or at home, and you feel tensions mount, take a few minutes to unwind.
Stop what you’re doing – Don’t get burnt out. It’s ok to step away, and regroup
yourself.
Go for a walk – Fresh air, and a stroll through a park, or down the waterfront will help lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones. Breathe – Focus on slowly breathing in and out. Release tensions with each exhale. Relax – Close your eyes, lay your head back and relax your facial muscles. At the office: sink into your chair, let your arms fall to your sides, uncross your legs/ankles, and breathe. At home: lay down, rest your arms out comfortably palms up, and breathe.

Enjoying a well-earned reputation, the HIA Pioneer Housing, Kitchen & Bathroom Awards acknowledges quality, excellence and innovation within the new home building and renovation, and kitchen and bathroom industries throughout Far North Queensland and in 2014 HIA Housing Awards enters its 42nd year. Custom Built Home up to $400,000
A
pproximately 300 people attended the HIA Pioneer Housing Awards last Friday night at the Pullman International Ballroom to honour the Housing Industry’s high achievers. The most prestigious regional award, “Cairn’s Home of the Year” went to Ash Moseley Homes for their beautiful new home project at Bluewater Harbour. The magnificent home is set on a double waterfront block with design features and attention to detail that really makes this home stand out. Its unique design includes a swimming pool that spans across much of the outdoor exterior with an internal view from the main living room. Ash Moseley Homes also showcased their skills in design excellence and innovation by winning Custom Built Home over $800,001, Bathroom Design, Outdoor Project and Custom Built Home of the Year. The HIA Kitchen and Bathroom categories carry equal weight to the Housing categories in terms of prestige and notoriety. Artizan Cabinets showed off their building and design skills by taking out the Kitchen of the Year project. This stunning entry was unique and displayed an excellent use of product, colour and design principles that were second to none. Artizan Cabinets also won New Kitchen over $20,001, Kitchen Renovation over $20,001 and Kitchen Design. Mystyle Homes won the award for the Greensmart Energy Efficiency Home, which boasted energy efficiency savings through both design and construction techniques. Mystyle Homes also won a number of other awards including Display Home up to $300,000, Special Purpose Housing, and SPEC Home.
The Spec Homes category caters to an individual house, which is either sold off plan or built for sale on completion. Kenick Constructions was also a big winner taking out three awards including Project Home up to $300,000, Project Home over $300,001 and Project Built Home of the Year. The Project Home category applies to a new home based on a display home which has been tailored to suit the needs of the client and the site. Russell Parnicott, HIA’s Cairns Manager said this year’s entries were some of the best entries he had seen over his long career in the building industry and can’t wait to see what is entered next year. Russell was also impressed by the fact that so many newer entrants were involved in this year’s ceremony, taking out many of the awards for design innovation and workmanship. Russell stated that “The great thing about this year was that we saw new designs and not just the standard home with some adaptations or a kitchen with a few added features. Entries were different and you can see a lot of thought and planning had gone into making these projects the best they could be”. HIA and sponsors of the awards would like to extend their congratulations to all finalists and category winners on great quality and innovative designs.

HIA AWARD WINNER ALLARO HOMES
Planned to perfection
By Stacy Wong
Wayne and Jenny Cavallaro are no strangers to the HIA Awards. As award-winning builders, Allaro Homes is consistently held in high esteem within the home building industry. For those that don’t know, the HIA Awards is a very special evening for the industry – think of it as the Golden Globes of home building. It’s a night of fun, filled with glitz and glam, fashion, and awards. The HIA Awards recognize HIA members for outstanding workmanship, design and innovation in the houses they build each year, and for their professionalism on and off the worksite. This year, Allaro Homes won in the category of Best Display Home $300,001 - $450,000: This home is perfect for the flourishing family. Great street appeal and a stunning entrance that sets the colours throughout the home. Spacious master bedroom with his and her robes, large media room, additional lounge room and a beautiful kitchen looking through the dining area to the rolling green hills surrounding the estate. The children have 3 bedrooms and their own TV room that can be closed to the rest of the home, giving a lot of separate areas to be enjoyed by all. “We always appreciate winning. We’ve maintained our position in the industry by consistently moving forward and thinking outside the box. When our clients are happy – building a house that clients love – that’s success to us,” says Jenny. However, winning isn’t everything. Wayne and Jenny enjoy the annual HIA Awards because it’s about celebrating successes amongst peers. It’s a night for the industry to let their hair down and have fun together. “You gain respect from colleagues when you win an award, and you’re happy for all the winners – but it’s not all about competition. We all understand each other and what it takes to survive in the industry. It’s good to stand up for one another and support each other – celebrating each other’s success, not just your own, not just the winners, but everyone’s success.”
“On the night, you really feel that we all come together. It’s a very friendly environment. We get each other; everyone’s in the same business. We’re not just building homes; we’re building history together.”

SOLID FOOTING Residential building approvals climbed for the second consecutive quarter in August 2014, which provides a very healthy start to the 2014/15 fiscal year, according to the Housing Industry Association (HIA), the voice of Australia’s residential building industry. The total number of residential building approvals increased by 3.0 per cent to 16,810 in the month of August 2014. Detached housing approvals inched backwards by 1.4 per cent, although with around 9,400 approvals, it remains consistent with the level of activity we have observed throughout 2014. Victoria and Queensland both recorded increases in detached house approvals, while approval activity softened in the other states and territories. New South Wales
recorded the most significant fall with approvals dropping by 10.7 per cent in the month. The monthly flow of multi-unit dwelling approvals continued to be quite volatile. Multi-unit dwelling approvals recorded a monthly increase of 9.2 per cent to 7,409 in August. The uplift was a consequence of New South Wales, Victoria and ACT posting healthy rebounds from relatively weak levels in July. Elsewhere, approvals for multi-unit dwellings declined. “The number of approvals in August remained below the peak achieved in January this year. Nevertheless, August was a particularly strong month for residential building approvals,” said HIA Economist Geordan Murray. “In the twelve months to August approvals reached 197,571 – a record

high in any twelve month period. This result demonstrates that accommodative monetary policy settings are facilitating a sustained recovery in new home building.” The increase in building approvals nationally during August was driven largely by the 15.5 per cent increase in Victoria (seasonally adjusted terms). Approvals also increased in New South Wales by 2.9 per cent, Queensland by 1.4 per cent, South Australia by 11.3 per cent. Western Australia recorded a decline in approvals of 16.2 per cent after the blockbuster month in July, while Tasmania held steady (down by 0.6 per cent). In trend terms, new home approvals increased by 9.0 per cent in the Northern Territory and by 13.0 per cent in the Australian Capital Territory during August.

The home building contract process made simple. In Queensland building contracts are available from Master Builders Association, Housing Industry Association and Queensland Building Construction Commission (used to be QBSA), and it is generally accepted that the builder will supply the contract. These contracts have had much time and effort put into them by each of these industry bodies to protect the interests of both builder and owner during the construction process. It’s there for everybody’s peace of mind when building your new home. This is an exciting time and your builder will be able to explain the process to you in clear, simple steps. Some of these steps take place before construction can
actually start on your block of land. If your contract is subject to finance there will be a timeframe that you are required to obtain finance by and the builder will require a letter from the financier stating the amount of funds that have been approved. Once this is received, or you pay the deposit, your working drawings for construction approval will be commenced. A soil test is required and should only take a couple of days. Sloping sites around Cairns may require extra engineering for retaining walls, suspended slabs or site drainage which may take a little longer to produce the relevant documentation. Once your working drawings are completed they will be certified by an engineer. Your house will also receive a star rating and Energy Efficiency Certification. If you are building in the Hillslopes area in Cairns Regional Council then you will need to select your external colour scheme and some sub divisions require a covenant approval by the developer. Once all these requirements are completed then you should check and approve your drawings. I advise to make sure you sign off on your drawings so that you know exactly what your home is going to look like. The plans are then ready to lodge with Council or Private Certifier. This preliminary process can take from 6 – 8 weeks depending on the amount of details required. During this time its best to try and get all your colour and product selections done so the builder can be ready to produce orders for suppliers and subcontractors as soon as the drawings are out of council. This is the exciting part of the process where you get to choose colours and finishes that will put a little bit of YOU into your new home. While you are completing your selections you may have changed your mind on something in your new home and this is the time to sit down and confirm everything with your builder. If there

are any variations then they should be priced out for you in writing and signed off now. That way every one is clear on what is going to be included in your new home. If it’s all fairly straight forward you should have approved drawings in a week. If extra council requirements are necessary it may take up to 4 weeks or more for complex projects. Now your new home is ready to start construction. First the site preparation will commence and then the construction process. Make sure you are comfortable with your builder as you will be working with them for a long time and this relationship is critical to your peace of mind. Understand the timeframe involved in the preconstruction and construction processes and that way there shouldn’t be any problems along the way. Remember your builder has many clients so if you have any questions or are unclear on any of the processes ask your builder to explain it to you as a good line of communication ensures the smooth building process. dispelling the myths of building on
ELEVATED LAND
Take the forested, sloping setting of Elysian as your prime example. Many people are attracted to Elysian for its tropical ‘feel’, serenity and proximity to the beach but then face the conundrum of how they will design their home to suit. This is where Tony Zambelli, Director of Coastal Pacific Homes steps in. Tony is one of the region’s most experienced builders whose specialty is exactly that, designing and building dream homes on elevated land.
They are clients who enjoy privacy and a hillslope block is perfect for this.”
“Many people feel that a hillslope block is just too difficult but it is all in the design. It is all about producing home designs that float seamlessly over the top of the existing land to create minimal earthworks.”
Tony’s advice is golden. “Let the land dictate the design of the home. All hillslope blocks have different features and benefits that you can utilise or make the most of in the design phase. Capturing the right aspect of the elevated views and incorporating features into the home that capture the most desired eye line view are all parts of the process. For instance, designing the home to have larger windows or double glass sliding doors that beckon the outside in. Another practice is making sure the breezeways channel the best airflow and to do this we might incorporate louvred sections of windows.”
According to Tony the greatest benefits of elevation are cooling breezes and panoramic views.
Tony also dispels the assumption that an elevated build comes at an elevated price.
“We find that our clients who want to build on elevated land look for home designs that offer lots of open space and do not feel too ‘up close and personal’ with their neighbours.
“So many people just disregard this style of build because they assume their budget will be eaten up with the expense of earthworks. However, it can be quiet easy.
The best way, in my opinion, is to start with a lightweight steel frame construction. You need to design the home so that it fits with the land. In other words, don’t try and mould the land to a specific design because changing the land is costly. Some people make this mistake; the come to me with a home design and then face the challenge of making it fit – that is where clients can succumb to large earthworks costs. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle, if you embrace the style of the land and let it set the design of the home, they will marry together with ease.”
With careful advice and a home designed to suit the flow of the land, an elevated home site could be just the ticket to securing that idyllic lifestyle. Space, privacy, views and cooling breezes are wonderful advantages that await the elevated LAST B home owner – all that SELLI LOCK NG FA is required is a little S bit of patience and a OVER lot of expertise. 7

I
f there is any doubt that the real estate market is on the up in the Far North, a talk to the team at Dixon Homes will put those negative thoughts to rest. Having recently been awarded ‘Franchise of the Year’ for Dixon Homes Australia and New Zealand, positivity is most certainly in the air. “Its an exciting time for the Far North… after several years with a very flat economy things are clearly on the improve with values increasing and more confidence appearing in the market,” said Andrew Thomas, Managing Director of Dixon Homes in Cairns and Townsville. The confident words are echoed by actions, with a number of new projects underway from the Dixon group.
available, priced from around $500,000. “There are not many opportunities for hillside living left and some of the views and back drops at Tranquillity are stunning,” said Andrew. “We have over 2,000 plans available online and we encourage people to spend some time with our consultants as we are confident that we have plans and designs that will suit any potential buyer.”
“
”
We have plans and designs that will suit any potential buyers.
Lago Crescent at Forest Gardens presents 11 double storey homes on low maintenance blocks with pools and many with lakeside views due for completion in the new year and priced from $560,000.
“Available land is still a big issue and in addition, this area will receive a huge boost with the announcement of the Government support for the master planned development at Mount Peter providing new infrastructure for the immediate area over the coming years.”
“These homes are ideal for people who want a high quality lifestyle with a low maintenance property and have all key amenities close by. The location is only 10 minutes to the city so it’s perfect for busy city commuters,” continued Andrew.
Two new display homes have recently opened at Tyenna Close, Bentley Park next to the Tranquillity land development and are open on weekends and both are available for sale. Five additional displays will open at Smithfield Village Canopy’s Edge and Bluewater, mid next year.
The Tranquillity estate at Bentley Park is also under development. Stage one of three is nearing completion with house and land packages
Investors and owner-occupiers are also showing interest in the Britannia apartments development on Buchan Street, where two
bedroom apartments are available for sale now from $300,000 through Dixon Homes. “We have a number of developments, displays, house and land packages and completed homes available and the market is clearly going forward. If you are in, or about to enter the market, then we would love to make you a coffee and see how the Dixon range can help you with your next home,” said Andrew. Dixon Homes can be contacted on 4050 5200 to make an appointment.
