LAUNCHES LOCAL FACES Since its conception in 2008, the Face Of Cairns Central, our city’s most prestigious modelling competition has grown to gain interest from Dallys Model Management and secure local faces a spot on the international stage in Ponds, Contiki and Dulux campaigns. This Cairns Central program aims to uncover local talent and provide aspiring models with the unique opportunity to launch a professional career. Kassy Zandt, Catriona Grey, Sarah Hawthrone, Grace Gowdie, Jessie Clements-Markham and Elyse Miller are just some of the local success stories, and this year’s entrants will be no exception. Our 2013 Model Search winners, Aimee Chirio and Jack Foreman, are fabulous faces that stood out from over 300 other entrants who were judged on appearance, confidence on the catwalk and photographic presence. Getting straight to work in front of the camera, Aimee and Jack recently featured in the Cairns Central Spring Summer Fashion campaign shot in Palm Cove. “The shoot was so much fun, especially the creative hair and makeup transformations. I look forward to what lies ahead, not only as Face Of Cairns Central but also the entire modelling industry”, said Aimee, who will also star in Cairns Central’s well-known Christmas and

Cairns Has Got Talent campaigns. Jack Foreman said the Face of Cairns Central experience has helped to develop his confidence. “It’s been such an exciting and worthwhile experience,” Jack said. Face Of Cairns Central is just one of the extraordinary fashion programs now being run by Cairns Central. The Fashion Incubator is another initiative that nurtures local talent. The program aims to provide a platform for emerging designers to launch and grow their labels. Developed by Cairns Central in collaboration with the Emerging Designer Group within Cairns Tafe, the Fashion Incubator is a monthly interactive pop up clothing and accessories market at Cairns Central. The Fashion Incubator has recently been recognised at an international level being announced as a finalist in the 2013 Asia Pacific Shopping Centre Awards. Cairns Central has been leading and supporting a dynamic fashion presence in Cairns. Cairns Central Centre Manager Christie-Lee Jackson said “We are so excited to be involved in showcasing the talented people who live in this city”. “Both Aimee and Jack have performed extremely well in their new roles. We wish them all the success in their future careers and look forward to seeing the entrants for 2014.”

You’re running back to the office with latte in hand and two minutes to spare when you slip your mobile back into your bag, and notice the prescription you were meant to get filled! With Alive Discount Pharmacy’s new script delivery service, there’s no need to worry. Exclusive to the pharmacy group’s Cairns CBD store, the service allows you to fax or SMS your order and have it delivered to your inner-city home or workplace. “It was designed especially with busy business men and women in mind,” says pharmacist and managing director Nick Loukas. “Our lives are getting busier, but it’s important people always put their health first. This is one way we can help them do that.” Locally owned and operated, Alive Discount Pharmacy was established five years ago with a single store in Smithfield. It now has six stores across Cairns, Smithfield, Brisbane and Cooktown. And the brand is growing, with the next store set to open in Townsville, and plans to expand throughout Queensland. The pharmacy offers up to 50 per cent off prescriptions, with a guarantee to beat any advertised price. And the discounts extend to the pharmacy’s expansive retail line, including discounted vitamins and up to 70 per cent off the recommended retail price on women’s and men’s fragrances. “Our motto is ‘feel alive for less’ and our prices allow our customers to do exactly that,” Nick says.
“We want them to look and feel their very best at just a fraction of the usual price.” As well as saving customers money, Alive Discount Pharmacy prides itself on providing industry leading customer service and professional health advice. Some of the senior staff have worked in the city for between 10 and 30 years. And Nick was himself a pharmacist for 20 years before establishing the Alive Discount Pharmacy brand. “We are very pleased to be able to offer lower prices while still providing premium customer service and a friendly customer experience,” Nick says. “Our staff are extremely knowledgeable and approachable and ready to help with a wide range of health and medicine queries.” Tourists and visitors can also feel comfortable visiting an Alive Discount Pharmacy, with staff trained in travel medicine and other common health concerns of travelling customers. Nick says the very look and feel of the Alive Discount Pharmacies is perfectly suited to Cairns’ City Centre Alive renewal project, and he is excited about the future direction of the CBD. “There are always good and bad times but as a member of the Chamber of Commerce I am particularly excited about the redevelopment of the CBD,” he says. “I think 2014 is a going to be a good year for Cairns and I am proud to be offering such a great product and service to the revitalised city centre.”

SAM
powers By Michelle Dryburgh
H
e’s said to be Australia’s busiest illusionist, and that’s never been truer than in 2013. Sam Powers performed for an audience of millions on this year’s series of Australia’s Got Talent. He juggled not only the performances but the rehearsals, behind the scenes commitments, media engagements and demanding interstate travel, all while continuing his popular nightly show ‘Beyond Limits’ at the Hilton Cairns. Sam says performing on the show was a ‘roller coaster ride of a lifetime’. “It certainly wasn’t easy,” he says. “During my time on the show I realised just what an incredible crew I have working alongside me, I simply couldn’t have done it without them. “And Robyn is without doubt the best lead assistant I have ever had, stunning, intelligent and absolutely fearless. Channel Nine even gave her a hashtag for her backside #magicbottom! “A huge thank you must also go to the Hilton Cairns, they are the most wonderful and supportive team I have ever worked with.”
The temptation of performing on Australia’s Got Talent had been calling for some time, but Sam feared damaging ridicule from the judges if his performance wasn’t good enough. “As the years progressed, the show started getting bigger and better and I also began maturing as a performer,” he recalls. “When I looked at the opportunity to be on the show this year, I said to myself, ‘I’m finally ready’ and the rest is history.” But he admits he had no idea what to expect. “There were times I felt like I was acting out a scene in ‘Home and Away’, it was quite fascinating to watch the producers make TV by manufacturing every moment and every scenario,” he says. “I knew the act was solid, but I had no control over the way my backstory would be packaged or how I would be portrayed. “I will always be very grateful for the opportunity to showcase my biggest and best magic to Australia, something that until now has not been possible.” Sam is now enjoying being back home in Cairns and looking forward to some down

time over the festive season, including a casual hit of tennis if his schedule allows. But there won’t be much time to rest, with big plans on the horizon for 2014 and beyond. “We are working on some very exciting TV projects that will hopefully come to fruition next year,” he says. “I am also in the final stages of preparing for an extremely dangerous world first stunt that could literally kill me. To make it even more exciting, I will be performing it live on TV.” Looking back on the year that was, Sam says he is extremely grateful to be doing what he loves most. “Magic is such a creative art and it is always exciting to continue inventing new illusions for the show,” he says. “It makes it all worthwhile to finally see a new illusion come to life onstage, and when the audience stands to their feet in response, it makes all the years of hard work worthwhile.” Beyond Limits runs nightly, Tuesday to Saturday from 7.30pm at the Hilton Cairns. www.sampowers.com.au 1300 500 331
Artizan cabinets By Michelle Dryburgh
A
rtizan Cabinets has claimed the Master Builders Best Kitchen of the Year Award for Queensland for the third year running. It’s also the third time Artizan Cabinets has won the Master Builders Best Kitchen Award for Cairns and gone on to claim victory at state level. The win comes with a pool of other major accolades, also topping the Cairns entrants for HIA Kitchen of the Year, Kitchen Design of the Year and Best New Kitchen over $20,000. Owners Russell and Paula Kelly say the awards provide confidence and reassurance in their designs and the direction of their company. Now approaching 12 years in business, Artizan Cabinets specialises in creating eye-catching, functional designs for kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and custom cabinetry. And its new partnership with cooking appliance brand Bora is creating even more opportunities for innovative design. Bora cooktops feature a downward vapour extraction system, eliminating the need for the traditional, large and noisy rangehood. “It is ideal for island benches, and I’m a big believer in being able to interact with family and friends while cooking, not staring at a wall,” says Russell. “For many people, cooking is becoming more of a lifestyle activity than a chore and the Bora range of products suit my
19
Hat-trick for kitchen designer
design philosophies down to the ground.” In addition to his unique designs, Russell prides himself on providing truly personalised service. He likes to meet with clients one-on-one in his Scott Street showroom to establish a clear understanding of their wants and needs to arrive at the best possible solution. Because of this, he asks all customers to make an appointment to see him and browse the showroom to avoid disappointment. “It’s not quite like a furniture showroom,” Russell says. “Our products are customised to the client’s needs and so is the service. We do close the showroom to other customer’s when we’re in there with a client so it’s always best to call ahead.” After the year of success Artizan Cabinets has had, it’s hard to imagine the business could top it. But 2014 is already looking promising, with new partnerships in place with several builders as well as a number of renovations in the works. “January is traditionally a quiet time but this year we’re going to be quite busy,” Russell says. “I think it really reflects the buoyancy in the marketplace, particularly with the plans for the new casino and other developments. “I think everyone seems more positive and proactive now, and I’ve always tried to be that way. “In business you can talk yourself into a negative situation so it’s important to stay positive and keep looking forward.”

The Future is Bright
For Cairns’ young business people
WGC lawyers By Michelle Dryburgh
T
wo young Cairns lawyers are proving age is no barrier to success. Rhiannon Saunders, 26, and Tom Cameron, 31, have just been promoted to associates of WGC Lawyers – one of the longest established law firms in Cairns. The pair joined the firm five and two years ago respectively and devoted themselves to long hours and continued self-improvement to rise through the ranks. Both admit the work can be challenging, but that’s why they love it. “Law offers endless challenges, that’s what makes it so interesting,” Tom says. “The people you work with and the application of laws are never the same on any given day.” “It’s always changing,” adds Rhiannon. “I really enjoy being able to work with and help so many people.” Rhiannon says her law career was a natural progression, completing high school in Cairns before studying law at JCU and starting work with WGC. But Tom, who grew up in Tasmania, tried his hand elsewhere before deciding law was the career for him. “I took a year off after uni and worked in a number of different jobs. People always asked why I had a law degree if I wasn’t a lawyer,” he recalls. “I went back to Tasmania and started practising law. Later I came to Cairns for a holiday, but I never left.” So what would the two consummate law professionals be doing if they hadn’t become lawyers? “I would have loved to have been a host on one of those travel shows, travelling to far away destinations and seeing the
21

world. However, it’s probably more likely that I would have trained to be a teacher,” Rhiannon says. And Tom? “If you’d asked me a few years earlier I would have said professional snowboarder. But even at my current age that career would be well and truly over by now. In reality, I probably would have gone to the mines chasing the big dollars.” Outside the office Tom wears many hats. He’s the president of the North Queensland Law Association and sits on the JCU Cairns Law School External Advisory Committee. He also enjoys touch football, social soccer, boxing, golf, camping and along with Rhiannon and other members of the WGC team has spent the past two months training for the annual Cairns Corporate Rowing Challenge. And it paid off, with the team claiming victory at the Regatta in November. When she wasn’t rowing or at the gym, Rhiannon spent much of this year preparing for the Australian Institute of Management Cairns Great Debate, or sitting on the boards of community organisations like Youth Empowered Towards Independence (YETI) and the Cairns Womens Centre. You might be wondering, how do they do it? “You need to challenge yourself, whatever you’re doing,” Rhiannon says. “To be happy you should always strive for bigger and better things and work to the best of your ability.” Tom agrees. “Where an opportunity arises to better yourself you have to take it,” he says. “If you don’t work hard or challenge yourself you won’t get very far, but if you do, you’ll reach your goals.”

FNQ Hot Property By Peta Burton
I
t has been a stellar 5th year in business for FNQ Hot Property; an enterprise that prides itself on “participating in the Cairns community”, says real estate agents Nathan and Jenna Shingles who’ve “built the FNQ Hot Property brand by proudly sponsoring local events and marketing the business and properties we represent in unique ways”. And, here’s how they’ve successfully done this in 2013. On October 17 a Guinness World Record was attempted in Cairns. The challenge: to assemble the largest number of networking individuals in one location to promote the city and take the title from China. The result: 475 individuals, exceeding China by 69. FNQ Hot Property was right in the middle of the hype, invited as naming rights sponsors for the momentous occasion by AIM. “There was a lot of follow up with businesses that attended and the achievement put our name in good stead while supporting the overall network here”, says Nathan. “In fact, that’s what real estate’s about, helping people, and we find it rewarding when we achieve things for others”. On October 26 FNQ Hot Property was once again helping create a buzz about town by supporting the inaugural Spring- Sum Fashion Australia event accompanied by high profile personalities from Lara Bingle to politicians, Michael Trout and Gavin King, at the Shangri La. “We were approached by the organisers and it was essential for us to be there supporting local designers and businesses once again”. Nathan and Jenna are determined to ensure Cairns continues to further cement its
23
CairnsLife
place on the local, national and international stage and are both fuelled by an unabating belief and commitment to the city that’s utterly contagious. Nathan and Jenna created FNQ Hot Property in 2008. Their collective experience as both a buyer and seller of their own properties inspired them to create an agency that dealt with buyers and sellers professionally and flexibly. They realized this wouldn’t be possible within the confines of an existing national brand franchise and thus established their own unique brand from the ground up. “We offer a personalised service that’s not only about real estate but relationships whether it’s for inexperienced, first-home buyers through to extremely wealthy, international investors. We mould what we do to benefit each property”, says Jenna. Their growing reputation and results have also lead them to represent and market some of the largest and most-awarded homes in Cairns. There is one other feature that makes Nathan and Jenna’s Bluewater Harbour business different; it does property sales and inspections from a 36- foot Riviera, Done Deal for luxurious waterfront homes. However, the sports yacht is also commissioned to another role with the Ribbons Ladies Game Fishing Tournament to celebrate the event’s 30th anniversary. “It’s our 3rd year fishing the Ribbons and we wanted to support this remarkable women’s event that attracts anglers from across the country and from overseas by becoming a sponsor. But it’s not just about putting money in, it’s about participating and supporting our great community”, says Jenna.
C airn s aviation skills centre By Michelle Dryburgh
C
airns Aviation Skills Centre is soaring towards its 10th anniversary after a stellar year of achievements in 2013. The local aviation training facility was recognised as the best of its kind in Australia at the inaugural Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council Awards earlier this year. The centre topped major competitors from across Australia including capital cities to take out the 2013 Innovation and Excellence in Workforce Development Award for Aviation. The awards night also celebrated the achievements of winners across eight other award categories, including road transport, rail, maritime, logistics and ports. Business manager Chris Pigott said the award win confirmed the centre had accomplished what it set out to achieve. “Before the centre was opened, apprentices had to go to Brisbane to complete their training at a cost of $10,000 per year for each four-year apprenticeship,” he said. “Any of the vast array of courses Aviation Australia conducts worldwide can be run at the centre, and it is unique in that it only provides training requested by industry.” Aviation Australia provides internationally recognised training at the centre, including flight attendant training, ATPL Pilot theory, training for apprentices in aircraft mechanics and electronics. It is also a Civil Aviation Safety Authority and European Aviation Safety

Authority approved examination centre. Located in the general aviation precinct of the Cairns International Airport, the Aviation Skills Centre is equipped with eight large classrooms, an operational hangar and stateof-the-art training equipment to provide students with a practical learning environment. More than 300 apprentices have graduated from the centre since it opened in 2004, providing a major skills boost for the industry in Far North Queensland. “The centre also enables foreign students to live in Cairns and receive world class aviation training,” Chris said. “It really has been great for Cairns and the training centre is the essential backbone of the aviation industry in Cairns. And the benefits are only set to grow with the facility planning to expand its offerings in 2014 and beyond. With the arrival of the new Boeing 787, which is built largely from composite materials and carbon fibre, comes the need for new aircraft specific training. Chris said the centre would be the first facility in Far North Queensland to offer composite training, which would be essential for aviation staff to master the different build and operation of the new aircraft. New additions to the pilot training courses will also be rolled out in February. “This industry is changing all the time,” he said. “The centre helps new and existing aviation staff stay on top of those changes, and that’s what has made it the world class facility it is today.”

M a t t h e ws austart homes | licensed building designer By Kate van Eck
Built on over 42 years experience, Austart Homes has earned an enviable reputation for delivering the highest quality, value and service. The company owned by Phill and Charmaine Matthews, is now one of seven franchises across the country.
A
fter operating for 17 years in Cairns, Charmaine says she is positive about the future of the region and looks forward to taking Austart Homes to the next level.
Charmaine’s career began on the Gold Coast where she took on a drafting cadetship with the business formerly known as Newstart Homes. While working for her husband-to-be, she completed a Diploma of Architectural Technology in Applied Science. “I’ve wanted to be a draftsperson since I was about 12,” she says. “Building has always been my passion.” Since relocating to Cairns when the company expanded, she’s become skilled in every aspect of the business. In 2004, Phill and Charmaine made the bold decision to franchise the company, rebranding it Austart Homes. Since then they have reclaimed two local franchises and are now personally responsible for an area stretching from Mission Beach to The Daintree. In addition to overseeing their own branches they also manage a number of franchisees from Cairns to Northern NSW. “Looking after the franchisees is a challenge, but it’s fun,” Charmaine says. “I try to keep them happy and give them the support they need.” An award-winning combination, Charmaine and Phill have been honoured with numerous accolades including a recent award for one of their stunning homes, the Laguna 298. In addition, Charmaine’s talent was recognised when she took out the HIA Business Partner of the Year (North Queensland) in 2012 and a finalist in the National awards in 2013. “The HIA award was an achievement I was proud of, but my main goal is just to keep our customers happy,” she says. “We prefer to build fewer houses in order to keep that personal touch.” Efficiently run with a staff of only four, Austart Homes also has a long-term group of loyal subcontractors. “Some have been with us from the day we started,” Charmaine says. “We look after them and they look after us.” With three levels of building packages available (Fitzroy, Premier Plus and Sovereign) the company has also established a loyal customer base. “The majority of our customers are second or third home buyers,” she says. Despite being in a male dominated industry, Charmaine’s years of experience have earned her respect among her colleagues. “I started when I was 19 and I always knew it was going to be a challenge – but the industry is changing.” On target to build thirty homes this financial year, she is determined for Austart Homes to be recognised as one of Cairns’ successful builders. “It’s important to set yourself a goal and write it down – you need to go to work each day with a clear direction.”

F
ar North Queensland is renowned for breeding multi-talented people. As an award winning building designer and fully qualified auxiliary firefighter, Ernest Raso is no exception. Since establishing EDR Building Designs in 2003, Ernest’s work in residential, commercial and industrial building design has been rewarded with several of the industry’s highest accolades. But the ever-modest designer is just as enthusiastic about his service to Queensland Fire and Rescue. “I love what I do, but my work does require me to spend my days in an office,” he said, “Sometimes we all like to get our hands dirty, and being an Auxillary Fire Fighter allows me to do that. It’s fulfilling on a completely different level.” Ernest was also appointed by his peers to serve as vice president for Far North Queensland of the Building Designers Association of Queensland. And it’s little wonder as to why. One of his most successful designs, ‘The Lake House’ won two state awards - Best Home between 250-350m2 and Best Residential Interiors - and was featured on Australia’s Best Houses television series and magazine. The home embraces open plan and outdoor living, and has been selected by the Tropical Green Building Network to be a Tropical Sustainable Design case for JCU, as well as receiving HIA GreenSmart Accreditation. It’s just one of many of Ernest’s designs that have won awards

this year alone. But he doesn’t do it for the recognition. Ernest’s passion lies in providing architectural services without the architectural price tag. “As a building designer I am fully qualified and have a Bachelor in Building Designs so I provide comparable services as an architect,” he said. “The benefits of having a home custom designed to suit your block will save you money in the long run. You have exactly what you want, which means no need for renovations or extensions, the home is more sustainable and energy efficient, making it cheaper to cool, and it will attract a higher price tag when it comes time to sell.” Wife Michelle is just as passionate about the business, and just as multi-talented. She’s in charge of marketing, accounting, office management, specifications and energy efficiency reports, as well as being responsible for award submissions. She said 2013 had been one of the couple’s best years and they were both excited about the future direction of the business. “When Ernest originally established the business, he started off doing a lot of draft work for project builders,” she said. “He has now gained a priceless amount of experience and is enjoying focusing his time on unique custom-designed homes and major projects. “We are very grateful for the recognition the business has received this year and feel very lucky to be here.”

Smooth sailing for rocky project
P
rotecting workers from lifethreatening rock falls was just one of many challenges PDR Engineers faced this year. But the hard work paid off for Peter De Roma and his team who claimed two major industry awards fordesigning a 90-metre rock fall barrier along the Barron Gorge Road. The $3-million project claimed the Institute of Public Works’ Engineering Excellence Award, and the title of Cairns Region Project of the Year at the Far North Queensland Engineering Awards from Engineers Australia. The design required a team effort including significant input from senior drafter Greg Hoff, and took two years to complete. The unique structure was built by Davbridge Constructions over six months, on behalf of the client Cairns Regional Council. “We always seem to be involved in the complex problems where a high degree of interaction is required between the geotechnical and structural engineering disciplines,” Peter said. Another example of this skill was two years ago when a major landslip occurred along
Lake Morris Road.Previous attempts to fix the fault had failed, and PDR Engineers was called in to find a solution. “It was a similar issue, men and equipment working on a hazardous slope,” Peter recalled. “But we were able to come up with a tied back pile retention system which you can’t even see, it’s completely hidden beneath the road.” The works join a growing list of major projects completed by PDR Engineers since Peter established the business in 1999. He initially based the consultancy on Thursday Island after identifying a need for engineering services in the Torres Strait. “Providing basic infrastructure to remote communities is extremely challenging but gives a huge sense of reward,” he said. “Something as simple as running water is something we take for granted, but the people in those communities don’t and are very appreciative of the work we do as engineers.” Peter returned to Cairns in 2004 and in 2007 was joined by friend and colleague, Terry Medhurst, an experienced geotechnical engineer as co-director.
29

“Since he joined, the business has really gained momentum through our combined engineering disciplines of civil, structural, geotechnical and mining in the one office.” As a result, the firm has an impressive client list of private and public organisations, Federal, State and Local Governments and mining giants BHP, Xstrata and Anglo American, just to name a few. The company employs 10 engineers and six administration and technical drafting staff, as well as an extensive network of sub consultants and contractors. Peter said the company’s success in 2013 had been humbling and he looked forward to 2014 and beyond. “It seems that Cairns is entering a new phase of development and this will bring new ideas and challenges, of which I hope PDR can be a contributor,” he said. “Our remote area work is also one of our strengths and we hope to be able to continue to provide the necessary services and associated infrastructure that is so critical to people’s living standards, which is what engineers do best.”

T
he staff at Cabinet Design Depot are masters in creating functional, practical and beautiful spaces to live and work. Their speciality lies in customising joinery for all areas of domestic and commercial fit outs of all sizes. That expertise earned the Cairns business two major titles at this year’s Housing Industry Association Awards – both the Outdoor Kitchen of the Year and the Best Kitchen Renovation Up to $20,000. Managers Simon Cockrem and Rod Busoli said the award win was just one of many exciting developments since opening a new state-of-the-art showroom on Aumuller Street in April. “We also played a part in several other award-winning ventures throughout the year, including Cazaly’s redevelopment, JR
Duty Free, TI Hospital and Cairns AFL,” Rod said. The opening of the showroom followed the relaunch of the business in January. The business name changed from Cabinet Depot and new emphasis was focused on the domestic design market. “We wanted to create a new line of business to run alongside our already successful commercial market, which has been operating in Cairns for the past eight years,” Rod said. “Our aim is to offer a high level of design, service and quality product at a realistic price. “We are a relatively small team with a total of 15 staff, but we have the passion of 100.” Cabinet Design Depot prides itself on being a one-stop-shop for all commercial and residential cabinetry needs, with an

extensive range of products, finishes and styles on show for a range of budgets. The work can also be altered to fit all interior styling, from modern contemporary through to classical country and retro. And the range of products and services offered by Cabinet Design Depot is only set to grow, with stage two of the showroom due to open in 2014. Simon and Rod said 2013 had been an exciting year for them and their team and they looked forward to unveiling even more exciting and innovative ideas for the whole home, inside and out. “We would like to take this chance to say a big thank you to those who have supported us including the fantastic teams at Status Plus, ID Blinds, Zanzoo Tiles, MyStyle Homes and Samios,” Simon said.
FUNCTIONAL TRAINING.... the new black
Recently one of my clients told me a story about how she found herself chasing a school bus with a forgotten watermelon in hand. This was not just a funny story but an apology, as only two days prior she had vented her rage to me about the stupidity of having to jog with a weight plate during a tough group training session. Alas, through those few moments of watermelon running my explanation as to the benefits of Functional Training was brought to light. The benefits truly are vast. You can achieve anything you want when training functionally, including being able to catch the school bus while running with a watermelon! By choosing a variety of functional tools and selecting the right exercises, combinations and loads for your goals, the majority of the major health and fitness goals can be achieved. Functional training is a classification of exercise which involves training the body for the activities performed in everyday life. We use functional training to: • Achieve a metabolic training effect which helps us strip body fat and get lean; • Get an intense cardio workout which will help improve our aerobic and anaerobic energy systems; • Train for a specific sport; • Build strength and muscle mass; • Help prevent and rehabilitate injuries; • Improve posture; and • Work with anyone, from the complete beginner to older client or an athlete. Functional Training is not new and won’t be disappearing anytime soon. We have been moving this way for many years; it is just now that people have put a name to it. As the general public learn of the benefits of Functional Training we are only going to see more growth in this area. More and more people will incorporate Functional Training into their daily fitness regime as they begin to understand the overall benefits and the fun way in which you can train. It’s a very exciting future and Genesis Fitness Cairns is leading the way. Our newly renovated Lake Street club is now home to the biggest functional training centre of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Our centre incorporates small group PT sessions that include Synrgy, XFit, Mash, TRX and kettle bells. Genesis members continue to have plenty of variety, getting a far greater experience from their club, which is what it’s all about. So if you aren’t already, start training functionally, the experience is a fun one and you never know when you might be chasing a school bus with a watermelon!

fter recently opening the doors to their own boutique, Karlie Jay and Emily Perry-Virgin are two sisters living the dream. Formally known as Attitudes Boutique Port Douglas, the store has recently undergone a rebranding courtesy of its new owners – which includes partners Daniel Albury and James Doolah. These days, ROSE&BOY (named after the girl’s toddlers: India Rose and Zekke aka Zekke Boy) offers a fresh approach to the concept of clothing for both men and women. After managing the stores for three years and successfully running her own label for over 10, Karlie is no newcomer to the industry. “We have all worked so hard for this opportunity and we are ready to give it all we possibly can,” she says. And it seems the timing couldn’t be more perfect, with the girls launching the new boutique name at the Spring Sum Fashion Parade with Lara Bingle.
While Emily’s background is property management, she also has her own flair for fashion, steadily following in her sister’s footsteps. “This is a big change for me and I am loving every minute of it, she says.” The sister says ROSE&BOY will continue to offer the same amazing brands, and customer service it’s renowned for, while also introducing a new selection of lines including Cameo, Suboo, and Isla by Tahlula. Perhaps most exciting of all is the release of a new men’s collection by the label Scotch and Soda. “Scotch & Soda loves to make great garments that suit every individual,” says Emily. “Products are rich in detail, high quality and affordable – which means our men can now be dressed as well as we are!” Karlie says that although they might “dream big”, they are happy to just take it one day at a time and continue to build from the humble roots on which they started. The release of menswear has been so successful and we hope to grow this along with our online website which is in the process of being set up. So really anything can happen from here.” Despite their obvious ambition and drive, the sisters clearly have a real passion for what they do. “It’s like playing dress-ups everyday,” laughs Karlie.” I love knowing that I have helped someone feel amazing in a new outfit or suggested something out of their comfort zone and opened up a whole new world of fashion to them.” Emily is quick to add, “the best part is unpacking new stock. General Manager for North Queensland, Brad Rees, says the group’s future events will have greater emphasis on communicating a client’s message simultaneously to both conference and online delegates. “Conference content will be delivered simultaneously to the internet and delegates, both physical and virtual, will be able to question, vote and have an impact on the conversation.” “The industry landscape is changing rapidly, but thankfully for the future of our business, we are all social beings, and we will always gather to network, communicate, laugh, celebrate and inspire.” Staging Connections provides technical, styling, design and production services for events in key conference venues across Cairns and the greater Far North, including Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, Shangri-La Cairns, Hilton Cairns, Pullman Reef Hotel and Pullman Cairns International, Jupiters Townsville and Novotel Palm Cove. “Being onsite at our venue partners enables us to respond to client requests within minutes and being part of a global business, allows us to call up our sister branches and draw on any level of technical resource for any event of any scale.” Since establishing a presence in Far North Queensland by acquiring Stageworks Australia in 2007, the business has delivered hundreds of major conferences and gala dinners for many household brand names, such as Priceline, Husqvarna, GlaxoSmith Kline, Telstra and BHP, and many concerts, including the FloRida in Townsville (2011), Delta Goodrem in Smithfield (2012). The growth of the business from a single office in Sydney 32 years ago to a recognised global brand hasn’t sacrificed the same personalised level of service it has always offered. Brad says the Staging Connections team are to thank for the business’ growing success. “The success of the business in Cairns in largely due to the team culture,” he says. “No single individual has had any more impact than his or her colleague. Being accountable, showing respect and acting with honesty and integrity in a safe working environment has been the hallmark of our success.”

T
hat’s the motto for Sajeela Jamie’s clothing label, Wild Sugar by Sajeela, sold exclusively at her boutique on the popular Cairns
Pier. The slogan also captures the very essence of Sajeela’s personality and her vibrant, international fashion career. Her designs have sold in high-end retailers across the globe, including Myer and Selfridges. But after 20 years of working abroad and living the high life, Sajeela returned to Australia to open her boutique and pass down her skills in design, sewing and pattern making as a teacher. She remembers her own frustration at the difficulty of breaking into the competitive industry, and offers her expert knowledge to give aspiring designers the cutting edge. “There are a lot of people wanting to be fashion designers, but in reality there are very few jobs in the industry,” she says. “To be a designer you have to launch yourself, and to do that successfully you need to know exactly how to go about it.” Sajeela’s own schooling in the industry came as a teenager in Perth. She was still in highschool when she began taking night classes and soon after started work at a local boutique, helping with alterations in between sales.
But it wasn’t until she went to Bali for a holiday that she got her big break. “I was running out of money and I needed a way to support my son and me, I had some fabric so I decided to sell a few pieces,” she says. “When I went to get business cards made it just clicked that ‘hey I’m a fashion designer’. I’d wanted to do it all my life and it never worked, but somehow I just fell into it.” Her designs soon attracted the attention of buyers from all over the world, but while she designed and manufactured the clothes, they were sold under other labels. Today there’s no mistaking the trademark bold designs of the Wild Sugar by Sajeela brand. While her early creations were largely inspired by her own interests, these days her focus is on flattering, practical and adaptable fashion that can be worn to work, dinner, parties or even on holiday. “I design different dresses that are appropriate to different age groups,” she says. “Some dresses are made with young women in mind and other styles are for older women. I want any woman to feel she can walk into my shop and find something perfect for her.” The Wild Sugar by Sajeela boutique is constantly growing, now stocking jewellery from ‘Jewellery 2 Match’ by Wendy, including a unique range of necklaces, earrings and

Sajeela has also launched a successful online store which she says was only made possible with the support of her husband Dameon “He works at the shop with me, helps source fabric and creates and manages my websites,” she says. “Without his constant support the shop would not have been able to grow and evolve like it has.” To learn more about Wild Sugar by Sajeela visit the boutique at the Pier or go online www.wildsugarbysajeela. com.au or www.facebook.com/ wildsugarbysajeela.

ver 22 years, Port Douglas Catering has transformed from a modest catering business to a sophisticated ‘one-stop-shop’ for wedding planning and event management. Now offering a range of additional services including lighting, thematics, decorating, entertainment and transport, this award-winning business is focused on excellence and customer satisfaction. Director Cameron Walton, says he and his staff are committed to customer service, attention to detail, and taking the time to really personalise every
event they design. After initially providing a catering service to Aristocat cruises in 1992, within a year Cameron was catering for three boats as well as doing small cocktail and dinner parties. “By the second year I was asked to help with running weddings and I became interested in the lighting and theming side of the functions as well,” he says. “Then in 1996 we designed and built a dedicated catering facility to accommodate the growing needs of the business.” Now operating 7 days a week with a core staff of 12 plus a network of
experienced casuals, the business offers a multi-faceted service to a large number of businesses in the region. Despite being honoured with a number of awards over the years, Cameron credits much of the business’s success to his staff and says their focus is to always exceed the expectations of clients. “Working with the best team I have had the privilege of being part of has been an extremely rewarding experience,” he says. “I love North Queensland and enjoy playing a part in looking after this wonderful world that supports us all.”

L J H oo k e r Putting people before property
T
he team at LJ Hooker Cairns Marlin Coast say real estate is not about homes, it’s about people. It was a philosophy first coined by Sir Leslie Hooker, founder of the iconic real estate brand. And one which drew LJ Hooker Cairns Marlin Coast principal Danielle Jobling to the network eight years ago, selling homes on Cairns’ Northern Beaches. Danielle has made that belief a platform in her agency. The office has been recognised for its community involvement at LJ Hooker’s annual Gala awards nights two years running, as winner of the Top Community Relationship Award for Queensland and the Northern Territory. The recognition is particularly impressive considering Danielle and her partner Roger only took over the LJ Hooker Cairns Marlin Coast agency at Smithfield’s Campus Shopping Village four years ago. While recognition of her team’s community-based endeavours was heartening, Danielle said the motivation to support charities, local organisations and events was never about winning awards. “Our team is not just made up of business people, we’re members of the community. We love living here, helping our community and celebrating everything there is to love about the tropics,” she said. Taking over the business in the midst of the GFC, Danielle and her team were thrust into a tough work environment. “It was a challenging time, but I have no doubt those challenges were overcome because of our close relationships with the community. We supported our community, and they supported our expertise.’’
41
CairnsLife
Since then, LJ Hooker Cairns Marlin Coast has provided sponsorship and in-kind support of local schools and fundraising for charities including Cystic Fibrosis, Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Foundation, Inspire the World Nepal, Cairns Northern Beaches’ Australia Day Breakfast, McHappy Day and the Annual Giant Easter Egg Hunt in Cairns. The office has also partnered with other local organisations including the Cairns Taipans. LJ Hooker Cairns Marlin Coast has grown to become one of the beaches’ leading real estate agencies. The property investment division includes four property managers, and the agency now has five salespeople who each specialise in a different suburb. “When home owners entrust their most valued asset with someone, they want reassurance that person is the expert in their market. And we believe this tailored service resonates well with sellers,” said Danielle. “Equally, our property managers are able to give personalised service to all our clients, not simply treat them like a number. Properties listed with LJ Hooker Cairns Marlin Coast are now uploaded to 27 websites courtesy of LJ Hooker’s relationship with leaders in the field. International relationships exist with real estate sites in Singapore, New Zealand, Italy, Germany, France and Hong Kong. In particular, LJ Hooker’s relationship with China’s leading property portal, Juwai.com, takes advantage of the lucrative Chinese market. “Our office is growing at a rate of approximately 117 per cent each year and we are very thankful for our great team. “Most importantly, we always put people first.”

GBR Helicopters reaches all new heights
O
ne of Far North Queensland’s most trusted helicopter tour specialists is now leading the way in commercial charters and flight training. In the past 12 months, GBR Helicopters has expanded its fleet from 12 to 18 aircraft, including two helicopters specifically for its new pilot flight training facility at Mareeba. In addition to its bases at Cairns and Port Douglas, the company has established a third location at Horn Island in the Torres Strait to provide commercial services for major organisations including Telstra, BHP Billiton and Ergon Energy. And after an exciting year of growth, the company will be welcoming in 2014 in its new home at the state-of-the-art Cairns Heli Centre on the marina. The stunning new facility combines a customer service centre and retail shop with flight check-in services and a departures lounge. The company’s reservations, sales and customer service staff are now based in the centre following the official opening by Mayor Bob Manning in late November. “It’s been quite an incredible year of doing business and the new Heli Centre is really the icing on the cake,” says managing director Ian Johnson. “The success we’ve had is a real credit to the fantastic group of staff who make it all happen every day.” 43
“From our reservations staff to our pilots, everyone has had a part to play and this is the result of that hard work and dedication.” GBR Helicopters is in a stronger position now than ever before, exceeding the expectations of Ian and co-owner Chris Cooper. The business partners took over the company during the GFC in 2010. Ian admits times were tough, and the business operated with a fleet of just five helicopters. But’s it’s only taken a few short years to turn things around. “There is a lot more optimism in Cairns now, you can see the spring is back in people’s step,” he says. “All the plans for these big developments in the area are really contributing to that, and it’s a good thing for Cairns, we really need it. “The thing about this community is everyone works together, it’s not just every man for himself because you simply can’t do it on your own. We all depend on each other and look out for one another. You have to do that to succeed up here.” And with the keys to success firmly entrenched, GBR Helicopters’ focus in 2014 will be on further developing and refining its diversified operations. “And whatever else we think of next,” Ian laughs. “You never know what’s around the corner.”

Operating for 12 years, Emma Miller, owner/director of Empowerfx, and her trainers have been keeping the Cairns community on track with its health and fitness goals but she believes it’s the people they train that make all the difference. “We have a really supportive crew and no matter what their goal, we encourage each other to dream big. It’s very special what we share TOGETHER.”
T
o be successful in the health and fitness industry
requires focus, determination and a big heart and Emma has all three plus a wealth of experience. She’s also a personal trainer, triathlon coach, an ambassador for the Special Olympics, a national presenter for EMAZON and THUMP Boxing and a trainer for TV’s Biggest Loser. 2013 has been an extraordinary 12 months for the two- time Ironman athlete and coach and here are some of the great heights Emma and Empowerfx soared to this year. Empowerfx achieved business bliss when Emma was honoured as the Cairns Business Woman of the Year. I was excited just to be nominated, says Emma. But it was so nice to be acknowledged and have the people I love with me that evening to celebrate. When a friend passed away earlier this year the importance of time with loved ones really hit home for Emma and on that award-winning night someone was certainly looking down on her unfathomable strength and ability. Success is the result of many highs and lows and this year has been no exception. It has been a tough year and we all need to stick together and keep moving forward. Believe in yourself, never be afraid to speak your mind and chase your dreams. When you follow your heart with genuine love and compassion success will come. My biggest success is, being surrounded by supportive family, friends and clients, adds Emma.
Two weeks later Empowerfx experienced one of its most rewarding feats; more than 50 clients arrived pumped and prepared for the Cairns Airport Ironman/Triathlon. Many confronted the 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run, and some braced the full Ironman including Emma herself. (3.8km Swim/180kmBike/42kmRun) “We trained together and supported each other to achieve a common goal; to believe anything is possible”, bursts Emma with pride. “The biggest challenge is making the decision to go for it. Throughout the year there were many tears and tantrums, late night ‘I can’t do this, I’m giving up’ phone calls”, but Emma could empathise. “I’ve been in this place with my own training and with this experience we all worked together with patience and understanding and I’m proud to say 100% or our team crossed the finish line”.“That’s why I do what I do. The love and excitement, the thrill when my team realises they can do it, they can do anything they put their mind to, that’s success.” Now, looking to 2014, Emma does what comes most naturally and is “ready for a cracking year” and with verve, charisma and an inspiring disposition she’s more than equipped to handle whatever’s down the track. If you would like to be part of the Cairns Ironman in 2014, Emma & her team would love to help. Call 0408158427

CAIRN S PREM IER DJ
Greg Mullens
Hi Greg! Tell us a little about yourself ? I am the owner/operator of a local entertainment company called Cairns Premier Entertainment with my wife Andrea. We provide mobile DJ Services & Live Entertainment for a wide variety of public and private functions. How did your musical career begin? My parents loved music and I was constantly listening to a large variety of artists on the stereo at home from about the age of 5. I got to know what music was suitable for a variety of occasions, from listening music to party & dance music. It became a passion for me. When did you start DJing? As soon as I left college, at age 17, I began DJing at parties, clubs & weddings. I also worked with the Harbour Agency in Sydney promoting Australian touring bands. Since that time, I have performed at over 1000 events.
What inspired you to become a DJ? My love of music. Music is extremely powerful- it can make you happy, it can make you sad. It can help you unwind or make you dance. When you listen to a particular song, it can take you instantly to a particular place and time in your life. Is there a song or album that you remember that had an influence on you? American Pie by Don McLean. There’s a line in that song that inspired me: “A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance and maybe they’d be happy for a while…” To me, that’s what being a DJ is all about. What do you love most about your job? Helping to create fun and memorable events for people from all walks of life through one of the most powerful and
enjoyable means possible: Music. I also meet so many great people at these events. What advice do you give to those wishing to start a career in your industry? Follow your heart and at the same time, keep an open mind when it comes to music. As for the people you are entertaining, be aware that you’re not necessarily going to be playing the music that you like, but music that will suit the majority of your audience. Where can we find you performing today? At Corporate Events, Weddings, Christmas Parties, Private Parties, School Formals, etc.. Basically any special occasion or event that people are celebrating. For bookings or inquiries, please phone 0402 809 809 or email info@cairnspremierentertainment.com. au.

customer once described Peter and Thelma Tokesi as the ‘epitome of customer service’. And he must have been right. The owners of Woree Swimart have claimed the National Franchisee of the Year Award for the third time. That commitment to customer service has seen the business strengthen dramatically since the couple opened the store at the Southside Shopping Village in 2006. “We still joke about spending more money on a few bottles of wine in five minutes at our local bottle shop than we had made in a whole week in our new shop,” Thelma says. “Two years later we still had new customers arriving not knowing we existed.
“We have since seen a growth of both the shopping village and surrounding suburbs and we now have great customers who come to us to buy, rather than shop around or buy off the internet as they know we will give great customer service and helpful advice.” The Woree store is one of more than 60 Swimart outlets across Australia and New Zealand, providing an extensive and affordable range of pool and spa supplies, cleaning equipment and services including product installation, assistance with filters, pumps and chlorinators and general servicing. Peter is also a pool fence safety inspector and can provide advice on barrier requirements for pools and spas.
He can also tell you lots about soccer, having coached State League team ‘The Bulls’ for four years, taking them to second place in 2012. He took a break from coaching this year but is back in the role of coach of the National Premier League team Heat for the 2014 season. “It will be an exciting year running Swimart and coaching the NPL, as a lot of customers come in to talk soccer as well as pools,” Peter says. Thelma and Peter wish to thank their staff Anthony, Cameron, Bob, Terry and Lindy for their professional friendly service and wish all their customers a happy, fun and safe pool season.

Bringing a touch of bridal glamour to the Tablelands By Michelle Dryburgh

ost 21-year-olds dream of working for themselves. But 21-year-old Cassandra Barletta made that dream a reality this August when she opened her own women’s formal wear boutique in her home town of Atherton. The Dress and Beyond specialises in bridal and formal gowns, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses and mother of the bride fashions. The Main Street store is an exclusive stockist of Allure Bridals, Impression Bridal and DaVinci Bridal, as well as Windsor Bridal Jewellery. The Dress and Beyond stocks a wide range of sizes and Cassandra provides in-store alterations with a personal and professional touch. She admits some customers have been surprised by her young age. “One of the biggest challenges has been to overcome public perception, sometimes, that because I am young, I don’t have the
experience or knowledge that others in the industry have,” she says. “But I think they are beginning to see I do have the experience and know-how needed for this industry.” Cassandra has always had a love of wedding gowns and formal fashion, and opened her store with five years of experience in bridal fashion and fittings. She worked for a local bridal store for five years, completing a threeyear apprenticeship and obtaining a Certificate III in Clothing Production with Brisbane’s Mt Gravatt Institute of TAFE. When a shop became available for lease on Atherton’s Main Street, she decided to take the plunge and open her own boutique. “Going into business for myself is challenging, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she says. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do and now that I have opened my own store, seeing 58

my dream become reality is a wonderful feeling.” Since opening the business, Cassandra has learnt even more about the industry and enjoys sourcing new and exclusive designs for her customers. And what she most enjoys is helping brides-to-be with one of the happiest occasions of their life. “That look on their face when they find the dress is what I do this for,” she says. “To know I have played a small part in helping them plan for their perfect day is so rewarding.” With Cassandra’s go-getter attitude, it’s no surprise she has big plans for her Atherton store. “I hope to see the business continuing to grow and dressing women for all of the formal occasions in the area,” she says. “I want to give local women the level of style, service and designer range usually only seen in major cities, right in their own backyard.”

Q. How can I get rid of my cellulite, I’ve tried EVERYTHING! A. To treat cellulite you have to first understand what it is and the causes. Cellulite is small fatty deposits outside of our normal “fat”, these deposits are encased in fluid as our bodies try to protect us from these cells being in the wrong place. Fat is found in our subcutaneous layer, a protective layer between the external skin (the largest organ of our body) and our internal body. The distribution of fat is controlled by our liver. A healthy liver deposits fat in our subcutaneous layer, however there are many influences that can alter this distribution. When these small break away fat cells bypass their normal home in the subcutaneous and travel into the skin itself the body’s response is to surround the fat cell in fluid, thus creating the dimpled or “orange peel” appearance of the skin. NO amount of exercise will remove this fat because it is protected, by its position in the body and the
fluid surrounding it, from being a source for energy. The body will go to the subcutaneous to use fat reserves for energy, that is why very thin people can have cellulite, and very overweight people may not have cellulite. The strategy for elimination of cellulite is correction and prevention.
If you have beauty challenges, email your concern to jennifer@beautyspaclubint.com
Correction: Lymphatic drainage massage is the most effective way to eliminate existing cellulite; done in conjunction with slimming and draining treatments it can be achieved over a short period of time. Prevention: Identifying the triggers that confuse the liver into sending fat to the wrong location is a lifelong commitment to a strong healthy liver which will result in smooth “dimple” free skin!

‘TIS to be jolly.
the season
But just how jolly will you feel after a month or more of over indulgence?
By Michelle Dryburgh
We all deserve a treat once in a while, but after all those Christmas parties and barbecues, you might be feeling more like the stuffed turkey at the dinner table on the big day. Here’s some of our favourite tips for surviving the silly season without sacrificing your health… Water Get into the habit of carrying a bottle of water with you, everywhere you go! You’ll feel fresher, be less tempted to overeat and it can help void off a nasty hangover. Fruit Instead of providing or taking chips and lollies to parties, make a fruit platter. We’re spoilt for choice for fresh tropical fruit in North Queensland, so make the most of it! Select fruits of a variety of colours and cut them into easy-toeat pieces or make fruit skewers. Your friends will be impressed! Move With so many late nights and sore heads, exercise regimes can soon slip. Even if you don’t make it to the gym, make an effort to do something active
every day. Try swimming, bike riding, gardening, or walk to the pharmacy to get those headache tablets! Plan ahead There’s often a lot more after-work drinks and other celebrations at this time of year. Think ahead, and if you are going to be drinking alcohol, leave the car at work or home and arrange for a taxi or a trusted friend to pick you up and get you home safely. Breathe The festive season can be stressful. It’s busy, expensive and we often feel the need to be in two or three places at once. Take time out of your day to meditate or at least sit down quietly, breathe deeply, and think about something you’re most grateful for. Then get back to the party and enjoy yourself !

A vasectomy is a small operation performed on a man to prevent him fathering children. The result is often referred to as ‘firing blanks’. The procedure involves making a cut in the vas deferens which is the tube that carries sperm from the testicle. The operation may be done under a local or general anesthetic, although most men opt for a general anesthetic because they ‘don’t want to watch’ or would rather be ‘out to it’. General anesthetic is also much quicker and more comfortable for the patient. The procedure is usually carried out in day surgery and patients can go home after the procedure, with the help of a carer. There are a number of different techniques to performing the surgery, but one involves the removal of a small segment about 1cm long to improve the likelihood of success. It is important to remember a man is not sterile immediately after the procedure however, as there are millions of sperm stored in the seminal vesicles and they can survive for weeks. It is therefore essential, alternative contraceptive measures be continued until satisfactory results are obtained from two seminal analyses, finding zero sperm counts on two occasions. Some men will experience discomfort in the testicles following a Vasectomy. This is thought to be caused by slight swelling and stretching as the testicle continues to make sperm, but usually settles in time. However, chronic, long lasting pain has been described in the testicles following Vasectomy. But equally so, many men who have never had a Vasectomy have chronic discomfort in the testicles. If a man has a history of testicular
aching or pain then he should not consider Vasectomy as he may develop continuous pain or discomfort for months or years post operatively. There is no form of fertility control except abstinence which is free of potential complications. Therefore the decision for proceeding to Vasectomy rests with the patient. While a vasectomy can be reversed, the man is unlikely to be as fertile as he was prior to the procedure and for this reason Vasectomy should be considered permanent.

It’s coming up to that silly time of year when our regular eating gets tossed out like Christmas Ham in February! There’s no point telling you to stay away from all the Christmas goodies - because let’s face it, it ain’t going to happen! It is all about knowing that we are never going to be perfect so have your treats and remember not to let Christmas Day turn into Christmas week. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy while still enjoying the festive season. Portions Portions Portions Let’s take a look at some Christmas foods - Seafood, fresh fruit, roast meats, vegetables, salads. Healthy right!? It just comes down to how much of these foods you eat. Keep your portion sizes in check by serving up the amount you think you need as opposed to the amount you think you want! Avoid going back for seconds and aim to have three regular sized meals in the day as opposed to one HUGE meal. What about the brewskis!? Christmas and alcohol go together like Santa and Rudolph. And there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a drink or two. But, it is important to keep your alcohol intake under control. Avoid getting too silly this silly season by: • Eating a proper meal before drinking • Have a non-alcohol drink in between alcoholic drinks
• Avoid ‘topping up’ your glass, so you can keep track of how much you are drinking • Avoid rounds or ‘shouts’ • Go for low alcohol beers or wine spritzers Sneaky Snacks Many of the unwanted Christmas kilos that are put on are due to snacks that lie around the house. Go easy on the chocolates, lollies and sugary coated nuts, they are full of calories and are unnecessary when you are also having larger meals. As a substitute, have bowls of fruit available, such as grapes and berries. Have a safe and healthy Silly Season, and most importantly don’t forget to enjoy yourself ! A C TIN fitness By Michelle Dryburgh
A
typical week in the life of Nick Carling looks a little something like this… Coaching triathletes in Team Carling and leading daily boot camps and personal training sessions in Port Douglas and Cairns with clients of his business Actin Fitness. Up to 25 hours in training to compete in triathlons and Ironman championships throughout Australia and overseas. Volunteering at local sporting events and taking part in fun runs and other fundraising activities. And juggling all this while maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle and finding time to spend with his girlfriend, family and friends. Nick admits it’s a challenging schedule, but it’s rewarding, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s like I say to my clients, there’s no such word as can’t,” he says. “You have to ask yourself, what do you want to achieve?” Nick, now 28, was unsure of the answer to that himself when he arrived in the Far North eight years ago. He was visiting Port Douglas from Victoria for a cousin’s wedding and recalls feeling ‘stuck in a rut’ before deciding to stay. He found work on a boat as a deckhand and for the next two and a half years spent a lot of time on the reef, before seeing an ad for a personal training course. “I quit the job and started my business six months later,” he says. “And the rest, as they say, is history.” Actin Fitness was established in
Non-stop action for Ironman
Port Douglas four years ago and has since grown to a fully mobile personal training business servicing Port Douglas, Cairns and the Northern Beaches. Nick currently employs one other trainer and has plans to grow his staff as he further develops his triathlon career. This year alone he competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas, placed second in the Townsville Half Marathon, third in the Great Barrier Reef Half Marathon and won a few local races. He is now training for the Ironman 70.3 Geelong in February and Ironman 70.3 Cairns in June 2014. “The atmosphere on the day is just electric and you work so hard for so long to get there. I do 10 training sessions a week for up to six months in the lead up, just for one goal, to get to that race day. Finishing is a bonus,” he says. “Even when I’m not racing I go along to help out because the vibe is just insane and everyone gets along really well. Anyone not interested in racing should get involved by volunteering at Ironman Cairns this June to be part of the action.” Nick says the secret to juggling his busy lifestyle and his business success is the same as that he gives his clients. “If you think it’s impossible, then you’re correct, it is with that attitude,” he says. “Don’t live your life wondering what if, stop doubting yourself and start making things happen, now, because you miss 100 per cent of the shots you don’t take!”

r Simjanoski graduated with an MBBS from Queensland University in 1985. He did his internship at the Royal Brisbane Hospital then came to Cairns in 1987 to complete his training at Cairns Base Hospital. Instead of returning to Brisbane he stayed in the tropics and began working as a GP here. He has been owner GP of Smithfield Medical Centre ever since, over 20 years. Dr Simjanoski developed a deep interest for all things related to skin and became more and more involved in skin cancer checks, skin excisions and mole removals. He soon developed a great reputation for the quality of his “cutting” and has done more and more involved procedures including skin flaps and skin grafts. It is his amazing attention to detail and insistence on perfection with his suturing that have lead to his skills in this area.
67
He believes that the way to achieve the best possible results for you lies in the combination of an understanding of your particular requirements, proven experience and the latest technology in order to create a natural and beautiful result. Some 6 years ago Dr Simjanoski made a decision to extend his love of skin procedures to include Cosmetic Procedures and underwent extensive training both in Cairns and Brisbane in order to develop the necessary skills. The same attention to detail and insistence on perfection that he uses in skin excisions he has brought to his cosmetic work. Dr Simjanoski is renowned for having a great eye when it comes to cosmetics and for being incredibly gentle with the needle. Dr Simjanoski has a special interest in; • Cosmetic Injections & Fillers • Skin Cancer Diagnosis & Excisions • Family Medicine • Paediatrics The most important step in this process is to understand your vision for your appearance. Dr Simjanoski carefully listens to your expectations and will be guided by your wishes for your appearance, at the same time expertly assisting you to understand the possibilities available, and what will work best for you. Love, Sex & Relationships
S i n gl e Coupled Up Sex versus
Whether you’re getting hot and heavy with your significant other or getting newly acquainted with a new lover, there’s pros and cons to both types of encounters.
I
f you’re riding solo, the world may feel like your metaphorical oyster and a night on the town or rendezvous with friends, an opportunity to find an after-dark playmate. Guys typically love the bragging rights and talking up of a hook up or one night stand, while ladies tend to be more coy hinting at saucy moments that happened between the sheets to their closest girlfriends – but is single sex really better? There’s the anxiety of revealing your lady lumps or manhood to someone new and the unknown territory of a new body to explore (hopefully there’s no webbed toes, strange growths or questionable hygiene issues). There’s also the issue of trust and feeling confident enough to unleash your inner Jenna Jameson or sexual prowess to someone you don’t
know. On the plus side, it’s new, exciting and unknown. You may discover a new move you’ve never experienced and potentially find a full-time lover or shortterm fling. And if you’re not interested in making breakfast, going on dates or the commitment that comes with a relationship, you can wave goodbye and continue life as you know it (with one more notch on the bed). Those that are coupled up should definitely be taking advantage of the trust and relationship you’ve built up. Now is the time to divulge your fantasies, recreate a Christian Grey moment a la 50 Shades of Grey and take a trip to your local adult shop – you may be surprised at the range on offer. Another benefit of sex with a spouse is it’s on tap when you need it and you know what to do to work each other’s

buttons. With all good things, what goes up must come down – and here’s the downside: couples can grow complacent. Matching skimpy lingerie can give way to comfy mid-week underwear, legs might not always be perfectly shaven and the same care may not be taken to satisfy your lover. Likewise, men can let things slip with their manscaping duties or willingness to set the mood (let’s make it clear fellas, a massage is always a good segway to something more). And ladies, a headache is definitely not an excuse because the big o (and we’re not talking origin) is better than any painkillers. So whether you’ve found that someone special to share your sheets with or you’re still bed hopping, keep things exciting, aim to please and never resign yourself to mediocre lovemaking.

The
BUCKET list Most people have a bucket list. A list of all the places they want to see, things they want to do and people they want to meet, before they ‘kick the bucket’. Whether it’s in writing or simply an idea, a bucket list can be a powerful motivator for setting and achieving life goals.
T
he trend became popular following the 2007 Box Office hit, The Bucket List. The movie follows the story of two terminally ill men, Carter Chambers, played by Morgan Freeman, and Edward Cole, Jack Nicholson, who write a bucket list while sharing a hospital room. The duo then spends three months travelling the world and living the high life, ticking off the items from their wish list. But it’s not until the end of the movie the simplest, and most significant goals are achieved. Interestingly, when I asked some friends recently for their top three must dos, their responses were mostly high-ticket items. Travelling to Africa scored highly on most wishlists. There was also swimming with sharks, travelling through Europe, attending the Glastonbury Festival, sky diving and even winning a . A few lucky friends had already achieved the greatest goals on their bucket lists, including getting married and starting a family. But one had a unique suggestion, passed down by a friend who had found themselves feeling lost and without direction. Upon confessing their situation, someone suggested they write a list of achievements, big and small, to work toward.
72
The result was a list of 100 goals ranging from writing and producing a short film to making someone smile every day for a month and spending an entire day in pyjamas. And if they crossed everything off the list, they would start a new one. Having smaller, easy to achieve goals seems like the best way to guarantee completing a bucket list, before we do indeed kick the bucket. As each item is crossed off, we would be increasingly motivated to tackle another, perhaps even heightening the likelihood of achieving the bigger, harder to reach wishes on the list. But as evidenced by the movie, we may in fact find the smallest, simplest, sentimental accomplishments to be the most rewarding. With that in mind, you might want to rethink your own bucket list. Or perhaps this is the first time you’ve given it any thought. Either way, one thing is for certain. Life is momentary. Someday, we will all kick the bucket. And we have no guarantees as to when. So, what’s next on your bucket list?

Broadening horizons for Far North Queensland

n the past 12 months more than 3500 people have trusted Queensland Training Services Pty Ltd with their further education and future careers. And there’s been countless others since the locally owned and operated training organisation was established a decade ago. Founded by Laurie and Sue O’Donoghue in 2002, Queensland Training Services provides specialist training and qualifications in workplace health and safety, business, training and assessment, fire safety and other high-risk certifications. What started under the couple’s house as a small home-based business has grown to include a dedicated office and training facility in the Cairns CBD, six contract trainers and consultants and eight full-time employees. Among the staff are the O’Donoghue’s children Kylie, accounts, and Ben, director, and daughter in law Tina, business development manager. “The company has gone through a few trials and tribulations over the years which have
resulted in changes in direction, both in staffing and services provided,” Laurie said. “A part of this was understanding that while we may be highly qualified in health and safety and accredited training, seeking assistance from a business coach was beneficial and changed the way we run our business. It’s also led us to increase the number and type of courses provided, with a concentration on higher level qualifications.” In growing the business, Queensland Training Services has expanded its course delivery to a wider area of Queensland, including more remote and isolated communities. Also among its biggest achievements is maintaining services despite the downturn in key industries like construction, increasing staff levels and continuing to support local sporting clubs, business forums and associations. But perhaps what is most rewarding is working so closely with family to build a thriving, successful business. “It was never intended to be a family business,
75

but it has evolved over the years,” Laurie said. “As our needs as a family changed it became apparent the family business was an excellent way to address those needs, with Sue and myself nearing retirement age and Kylie and her partner Graham having a son Jestin. “Sue and I have worked together for 21 of our 35 years of marriage and running the business has been one of the highlights. Before this we were working for a national organisation whose management base had moved to Melbourne with a lack of understanding of the needs of clients in North Queensland. “The difference with Queensland Training Services is we are local, we employ local people, we’re there to support our students and clients and we’re a professional and trusted company.” For more information on the range of courses available from Queensland Training Services visit www.qldtraining. com.au or call 4051 6357.
Training, education, recruitment and schooling
Oh how the times have changed... It was once commonplace for people to remain in the one job their entire lives. By Michelle Dryburgh
O
ften they would start work straight after school, celebrate their 18th birthday, buy their first car, and perhaps even meet their significant other, all in their first few years on the job. Then they would buy their first home, start a family and watch them grow. At work, some would rise up the ranks; others would stand still. But they would all be equally loyal to their employer and dedicated to the job. Years would turn into decades and long service leave would come around, again, and again. Grandchildren would start arriving, their title at home would change from ‘dad’ to ‘pop’ and retirement would beckon, some 40 or 50 years after their first day at the same workplace. In today’s society, that’s almost unheard of. Not only do we work for more employers in our lifetime, we often pursue several different career paths.
This has increased the need for ongoing training and education throughout our working lives, far beyond the high school gate or a single university degree. As a result, there are more adult education and training organisations now than ever before. If you would like to further your studies but you’re worried you don’t have the time, you might be pleasantly surprised. Most colleges and training organisations offer flexible study options, specifically designed for people already in the workforce. Students can often choose from short courses, night classes or study part time, allowing them to continue working throughout their studies. The advent of online learning has also made further education more accessible to many people, particularly in rural and remote areas without access to universities and training providers. This new age of education has opened doors to new and exciting

opportunities for so many people, all at the touch of a button. It has allowed people to reinvent themselves, pursue and achieve a lifelong dream they never thought possible, rewrite their history and ultimately, change lives. We are fortunate to live in a country where everyone has an opportunity to make this happen, with the help of world-class education. So whether you’re looking to enter the workforce for the first time, switch to another industry, open your own business, or simply brush up on your existing skills, you should be able to find an option to suit your needs, time and budget. And with a new year just around the corner, what better time to start thinking about your options for a brighter future.

BAR & RESTAURANT Tucked two blocks back from the palm tree-lined beachfront strip at idyllic Trinity Beach is award winning eatery, Lime Tree Bar & Restaurant. Plating up modern Australian cuisine, the restaurant offers polished service with a dining room spilling out onto a breezy alfresco deck with a laid back yet refined ambience. To start, the famous drunken prawns are a proven crowd pleaser, but the summer ricotta gnocchi is hard to pass up. The pan fried dumplings’ crisp golden exterior encases a gorgeously light ricotta filling and when paired with a medley of peas, broad beans, kale, sage, local feta and a twist of lemon, it sings a summer melody. Moving onto mains, the slow cooked pork belly with prosciutto wrapped pork fillet is a popular choice, but the aromatic braised and confit duck duo is also a star in its own right.
Served with truffle potato purée and a mushroom mille feuille, the moist duck is pure heaven. Lovers of quality beef won’t be disappointed by the locally-sourced premium grade eye fillet, which is perfectly tender and served on a pillow of truffle potato purée with the shiraz jus adding another delicious dimension. While the changing seasonal menu is modest, each dish is executed to perfection and no matter what you choose you’re sure to leave feeling satisfied.

t was a ruby anniversary year for Aurecon in the far north with much to recognise and remember in 2013 as well as 40 years to commemorate. Over the last four decades the Cairns- based Aurecon office has provided engineering, management and technical services for Cairns, far north Queensland, remote communities along the eastern and western Cape to the northern tip and the Torres Strait keeping up with its international reputation that stretches across more than 80 countries. “Our flagship Corporate Social Responsibility Project is the Shipton’s Flat Ranger Base, north of Wujal Wujal, where Aurecon has worked in association with Bana Yarralji Bubu”, says Office Manager Paul Pommer. “We’ve committed over $150 000 in services to the project and it received the Premier’s Reconciliation Award for stage one in 2012 but the most satisfying reward was the appreciation from the local rangers who’ve tried to get this project started for years,” adds Paul. More of Aurecon’s award winning projects are landmarked across town from the Paradise Palms Golf course, Cairns International Terminal upgrades to the Smithfield Village Estate with “two key clients that this office was opened to serve 40 years ago, Queensland Sugar and TMR, still with us today”, says Paul. The success stories don’t stop there though with one local Associate honoured at this year’s National Association of Women in Construction Crystal Vision Awards. Danette McLean was the project leader for the Torres Strait Regional Waste Study accompanied by Paul as
81
Project Director. Danette received the Hutchinson Builders Award for Achievement in Design and the project then went on to claim the Engineers Australia Cairns Region Sustainable Project of the Year. “It covered an area from just south of PNG to across the tip of Cape York. It encompassed 22 communities across three regional local authorities and addressed domestic solid waste, building and demolition waste as well as green waste. The strategy was set for a 20-year horizon but its initiatives would run beyond that timeline”, says the environmental engineer and environmental law specialist who was thrilled by the accolade. While Paul and his team have been humbled by the kudos they’ve received this year in terms of industry honours he believes, “while awards recognise the technical competence it’s important to drive home the relevance of that to the community”. And the 25 employees at Aurecon’s Mulgrave Road office, who are mostly born and bred in Cairns or have been living here long term, are accomplishing this mission on a daily basis. In another 40 years though the world, Cairns and the far north will look a little different from today, even better. There’s also a positive outlook planned for Aurecon. “The first is that we’re still here”, says Paul. “In another four decades we still want to be improving the amenity of the area for the community and our families. We have a vested interest in providing sustainable growth for this area and we will do just that”. Here’s to 2053.

PROPERTY PROFESSIONALS
A growing number of Australians are leaving behind the ‘The Great Australian Dream’ of a big house and large backyard in favour of community living. In Queensland alone, there are more than 42,000 community title schemes and 393,000 individual lots. The Roberts family of Cairns recognised this changing trend back in 1991, and established The Community Managers, now trading as ‘tcmstrata’. The aim of the business was to provide a personalised body corporate management service in Far North Queensland and an improved community living experience. Today ‘tcmstrata’ is the largest locally owned and operated strata business in Far North Queensland, managing hundreds of residential, commercial and complex mixed-use strata schemes. The team consists of qualified and experienced body corporate managers, and at the helm is director, Kelly Roberts – a highly qualified professional with years of experience in the strata and property industry. Body Corporate Manager Cory Sigley says there are always new and exciting developments in the strata industry as more and more Australians make the switch from houses to unit living. But the industry does have its challenges. Following natural disasters such as Cyclone Yasi, the Brisbane floods, Japanese tsunami and New Zealand earthquakes, strata insurance premiums hit an all-time high. “Reinsurers pushed premiums to much higher levels based on losses in Queensland over the last five years, as well as their fear that further losses are likely to occur sooner rather than later,” Cory says. Business Development Manager Lucy Ewens says living in a body corporate doesn’t have to be scary. “Not when you have a positive team of managers working with you,” she says. “Ask questions and get involved. It can be as difficult or as easy as you wish to make it. Just remember to learn tolerance for other people and respect their opinions. Afterall, you’re sharing a great big house together so you need to look after it and each other.” TCMStrata management wishes to thank all its loyal clients, staff and contractors for their support in 2013 and wishes everyone a safe and happy festive season.

CONTRIBUTO R S
Andean Splendour I can’t really explain why this announcement from the LAN Chile Flight Attendant on my recent flight from Buenos Aires to Puerto Montt resonated with me so much, but it certainly got me excited about the final portion of my South American sojourn. Australia is a vast and beautiful country and we have so much to offer, but we don’t have mountains, not like the magnificent Andes. This rugged chain of peaks, volcanoes, high altitude deserts, lakes and grass lands did not disappoint and the view from the aircraft is something I will always remember. They were so close I felt I could reach out and touch some of the higher peaks. The last days of my holiday were spent in the northern Patagonian town of Puerto Varas in what is called the Chilean Lakes District. This pretty town is located only 20 minutes from the Puerto Montt, on the shores of the sizeable Lake Llanquihue, but it seems to be worlds away, such is the striking difference in character and charm. Both towns owe their modern origins to the German colonisation of Chile in the 1850’s. Contrasting conspicuously with the Spanish architecture in other areas of South America, the houses here look more like Alpine chalets than Mediterranean villas. There are pointed gothic frames, attic windows, expansive sloping tiled rooves and neat picket fences. The older buildings are made of wood and painted in bright colours. The skyline of Puerto Varas is dominated by the bright red spires and white towers of the Catholic Church. This was consciously built in the style of German churches
Our experience counts.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats and fasten your seat belts. In five minutes we will be crossing the Andes”.
in the Black Forest; and together with the chalet rooves and abundant trees on the side of the lake it is a striking recreation of a secluded Bavarian village. In a nod to history, many shops and restaurants still offer “kuchen” and not “torta”( big creamy cakes). Directly across from the crystal clear waters of Lake Llanquihue, standing sentinel, are the Volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco. Think Fuji in Japan, Osorno is a real picture-book triangular volcano with a 2600m high snowcapped peak. To the west is Volcan Calbuco, all jagged after its 1893 eruption. Peeking out in the distance also is the rim of Volcan Puntiagudo. With a population of some 18,000 people, Puerto Varas is a holiday town that offers travellers not just unrivalled scenic beauty but a great base to enjoy the array of outdoor activities on offer in the area, including trekking, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, canyoning, climbing and even skiing. It gets packed in the summer and actually receives more travellers than it’s popular rival to the north, Pucon. It basically shuts down in the winter though, except for a few hearty skiers and mountaineers. The nearby Vicente Perez Rosales National Park is a treasure, small, yet beautiful, it offers excellent vistas of the Osorno Volcano, raging rapids and serene lakes. If the weather is nice you can easily spend a day here, taking in the views and relaxing between the waterfalls and mountains. Just inside the park you will find the impressive Petrohue waterfall, which is more a series of large rapids, created in 1850 when lava from Osorno diverted the river.
Further into the park is the lovely, emerald green, Lago de Todos Santos, which the intrepid can cross by regular ferry, jump on a bus, and after a relatively short trip over a pass in the Andes, find themselves in the popular Argentine town of San Carlos de Bariloche, another great centre for outdoor fun. With all of the conveniences of Puerto Montt just a short trip away, Puerto Varas is a top choice for an extended stay and also makes a good base for exploring the region. Some may find it too touristy, but its juxtaposition of German heritage and contemporary Chilean adrenaline is both beautiful and addictive. If you have the chance to enjoy this town’s unique energy and gorgeous location, do it. Where ever you choose to travel this year, have fun!

ecoming an Australian Citizen is the final stage of an individual’s migration journey here in Australia. Australian Citizenship brings with it privileges and responsibilities. All Australian Citizens enjoy the privilege of voting to help elect Australia’s Government, they can seek election to parliament, can hold an Australian passport and enter Australia freely. Other privileges include being able to seek assistance from Australian diplomatic representatives whilst overseas and citizens also have a broader range of employment opportunities in the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Public Service. The responsibilities of being an Australian Citizen include voting in Commonwealth, state and territory elections and at referenda, serving on a jury if called to do so and defending Australia should the need arise. Eligibility for Australian Citizenship depends on your individual circumstances. There are many ways to be eligible for Australian Citizenship and the process of applying depends on your eligibility whether it is Citizenship by conferral, by descent, by adoption or by resuming citizenship. If you have migrated to Australia, eligibility is generally under the
Citizenship
Citizenship by Conferral grounds. Most people are required to pass the citizenship test which assesses whether applicants have an adequate knowledge of Australia and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship and possess a basic level of English. Citizenship by Conferral eligibility also requires that the applicant be over 18, be an Australian permanent resident, be of good character and also meet a residence requirement. The residence requirement is based on the time you have lived in Australia and the time you have spent outside Australia. You must have been living in Australia on a valid Australian visa for four years immediately before applying which must include the last 12 months as a permanent resident, and not have been absent from Australia for more than one year in total, in the 4 year period, including no more than 90 days in the year before applying. Other ways of being eligible for Australian Citizenship may be if one of your parents is or was an Australian Citizen. Certain New Zealand Citizens may also be eligible for Australian Citizenship depending on the date of their arrival into Australia. For further information and eligibility you should seek the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent who can give advice and guidance on the right citizenship application for you.

Bo i ss e va i n UnderArt Gallery
By Kate van Eck
Offering a diverse range of original artwork, jewellery and collectibles, UnderArt Gallery was established in 2009 by well-known artist iefje Boissevain.
C
entrally located at Shop 4, 12 Spence Street, the gallery is an attraction to both visitors and locals alike. And while tourists make up approximately half of her clientele, iefje is very quick to acknowledge her local customers. “Without the locals we wouldn’t be here so I am always grateful for their support,” she says. Although tastefully finished with
an upmarket feel, the gallery offers a range of products to suit all budgets. “We like to be exclusive in what we offer, but that doesn’t mean we are unaffordable,” iefje says. “We have a great choice of gifts including sterling silver jewellery, which are ideal for people looking for unique yet inexpensive Christmas presents.” Now celebrating her fourth year in business, iefje says that while it hasn’t
all been smooth sailing, she is excited about what lies ahead. Dividing her time between the gallery and her studio in Gordonvale, she clearly enjoys the best of both worlds. “I love having contact with people and getting their feedback, while it’s also nice to escape for a few days and do my own thing,” she says. “I’m passionate about what I do and just love the energy here.”

With a lot of constant activity in the one room, your lounger room needs a lot of attention when it come sot cleaning! Whether you live in a house, apartment or duplex, this is the place you sit with your family and friends, talking, eating, watching TV, working and sometimes sleeping! Here are 5 simple but effective tips from Viva Cleaning for cleaning your living area: 1) Dampen a paper towel with eucalyptus oil and dust off bedroom furniture, shining, disinfecting and helping to keep sinuses clear during the cold and flu season 2) Try using eucalyptus oil in boiled water to mop floors. It lifts dirt and grease, and leaves the house smelling great 3) Mix one part olive oil with one part lemon juice to polish wood. 4) Soak a cotton ball with lavender oil and pop it in your vacuum bag. NEW HOMES DESIGNED TO
HOM E
WITHSTAND CYCLONES WITH THE SIMPLE COST OF LIVING IN OUR HOMES INCREASING, IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE A HOME DESIGNED TO WORK WITH NATURE’S OWN STRENGTHS TO MAKE OUR HOMES MORE COMFORTABLE AND COST EFFICIENT. One of the main reasons we consider building a new home is that all approved new construction is designed to the latest Australian Building Standards. This way we know all structural elements in our new homes are designed to withstand cyclonic wind forces and have been engineer certified to do so. Some of these elements include roof trusses; roof sheeting and roofing screws; windows and doors and their fixings; wall framing and reinforcement; posts and beams; structural floors. After cyclone Althea in Townsville in 1971 and cyclone Tracey in Darwin 1974 the Australian Building Codes were revised and much work was done on testing for design wind speeds. As a result these stricter building codes were introduced in 1985. Maybe I should make it a bit easier to understand what cyclone ratings mean. There are 5 categories for rating cyclones that range from category 1 (mild) to category 5 (most extreme). For construction in cyclonic areas there are generally 3 ratings for housing that can range from 1 (41 metres per second) to 3 (60 metres per second). We should really be calling them by their correct
description which is ‘design wind speed for housing construction subject to protection from the surrounding terrain’ as that would save a lot of confusion. I say generally because they can range higher if the engineer deems it is necessary to design to a higher wind speed. Much of the cyclonic damage recently has been to older homes that were built before the changes, while most of the damage to newer homes these days is done by flying debris or fallen trees as a result of the strong winds. This is a general reminder for all home owners that you should be performing regular maintenance tasks in and around your home. There are many homes that have had renovation work or additions that have not been designed or certified for cyclonic regions. These homes will continue to be damaged if they are not upgraded to the relevant current requirements. There are some owners who are aware of these requirements and still don’t upgrade their homes to current building standards, expecting insurance companies to carry the burden of these costs when claims are made. There is a great comfort in the knowledge that building a new home has the structural elements
designed to withstand those cyclonic forces. This doesn’t mean your new home has to look like a bunker but by incorporating good design elements with the practicality of suitable structural materials your home can be as individual as you like. My advice …. Talk to your local Builder or Designer about the advantages of building a new home for tropical and cyclonic conditions

JALILEHVAND Who are you and what do you do? I am a supportive father, welcoming friend, creative artist and I guess first of all a son to my parents. Enjoying what life has to offer, being healthy, happy and free. Why do you do what you do? It gives me the freedom to explore different materials, personal designs and sizes of projects. I also have the chance to meet many different people and bounce ideas off of. How has your practice changed over time? Over time my projects have varied between small hangings to large house installations. Every year the focus changes slightly depending on the trend and gaining more experience. What’s your strongest memory of your childhood? Travelling with my father and family in the summer time to the Caspian Sea in the Middle East and exploring beautiful farms. What is your dream project? To have built my business to a
unique, respected global brand name. And when life allows, to help those who are less fortunate. Favourite or most inspirational place (in Cairns)? Rusty’s Markets for its variety of herbs and vegetables and also the Cairns Esplanade, it is a fantastic place full of action, art and culture. What is the best piece of advice you have been given? Don’t give up, happiness and success comes to people who work hard. (And being a good cook helps too.) Professionally, what is your goal? To be the best I can be and constantly creating in my business and personal life. Dancing and music also give me a buzz. What wouldn’t you do without? My beautiful children and family, who make life worth living, and the freedom this beautiful country we live in allows us to enjoy.

The best break imaginable By Peta Burton

here is nothing better than an occupied mind. In fact, yes there is; having two or three occupied minds, and all at once. So please read on if you’re looking for some brilliant, local, not-too-hard-on-the-hip pocket ways to keep your kids entertained these school holidays. The aim however, is not to just entertain but give young people the opportunity to become engaged. School holidays are meant to be fun and they can also be wonderfully effective indoors and outdoors. So, we’re going to think outside the box a bit and that includes the X-Box, the idiot box or anything that’s technologically- inclined and begins with the letter, i. It’s time to get away from a screen or off the lounge and give the brain and body something to experience that will last longer than the highest score on Game of Thrones. For the next six weeks join us in making it a mission to redefine the word Playstation and create an adventure dimension beyond the console or couch. Game on. The chance to enjoy some school holiday time out begins at Cable Ski Cairns. Now, whether the kids have never seen a wakeboard before, want to take it slow on a kneeboard or practice some of their best tricks like a pro, this is a perfect platform to christen week one. It’s one of the most thrilling and popular sports in the north and open to all ages and ski levels. The Cable Ski Cairns team also knows how to get the adrenalin pumping, plus there’s nothing like a healthy dose of vitamin D to kickstart the Christmas break. For those who just want to stretch out and watch the action there’s a beach with umbrellas and sun lounges, a BBQ area and even a lagoon to keep really cool. All the fun happens right at the bottom of the Kuranda Range surrounded by mountains, rainforest and that tropical sun. While we’re among the great outdoors we can

get the youngsters in touch with a little more of Mother Nature. Heading out bush for a horse ride is an amazingly effective way of switching off all noise levels, distressing and it even helps stimulate the senses. Animals are extraordinary creatures and we can learn so much from them and about ourselves that the experience is, more often than not, truly rewarding. A half-day with the crowd at Crystal Cascades Horse Park is a truly hands- on encounter for all ability levels and an exciting family adventure in Redlynch; the only riding school in Cairns. The park offers everything from trail rides to equine-assisted therapy programs with 2,5 well-schooled ponies and horses that will help make your time together very memorable. Spending a few hours horse riding also helps fulfill many ankle biter’s dreams of being a cowboy or cowgirl for a day. For this next school holiday helpful hint it doesn’t matter if you have good coordination or not; everyone can dance. And, there’s simply no better time to get your groove on than when you’re free of homework, assignments, tests and those dreaded exams. Dancing at Backstreet Dance is a great chance to get out of the school uniform and into a pair of cargo pants to get funky or a crop top and leotard to jazz it up for your floor routine. The teachers at the Mayers Street studio in Manunda at Bohemia Industrial Park really do know their moves and have classes for all age groups which means mum and dads can let their hair down too, but maybe in a separate class to avoid potentially embarrassing your teen. The Backstreet Dance crew is also now on Facebook, so some LIKES might be in order ‘round about now. If you’re young ones need a more hands on, creative outlet the best way to satisfy these cravings is with arts and craft. The power in pencils, paper and paint and allowing the mind to wander
!! m a r og
willfully for a few hours in finger paint land or creating Christmas cards is certainly underrated. Pencils and Paper, a fun workshop to encourage young people to get creative and share a little colour with those who need it most is held at local libraries. The one-hour, afternoon session is just one of the free options around town and most of the air-conditioned libraries have these sessions on throughout the holidays. Pick up a new skill and learn to sew or join a story time class and listen in to one of your favourite fairy tales. Why not even grab a board game of Scrabble or roll some dice so the whole family can connect? To farewell the school year and embrace the big break we can’t think of a more appropriate way to enjoy some downtime than with a home-based bake off; and this is something that the young ones to grandies get a buzz out of as well. Two-dollar shops often have some bargain cake making and decorating utensils to set the kids up with their own cooking bits and bobs. And, some supermarkets also have a great range of inexpensive decorating goodies for toppings and tailoring homemade delights. But to keep things simple, consider the heat and pop some fun shapes out of a watermelon with cookie cutters. It’s easy, fresh, healthy and a tonne of fun too. Or, dig up one of grandma’s favourite cup cake recipes and let the kids enjoy time with you in the kitchen ‘cos even cleaning up can be a laugh when you’re covered head to toe in flour.
It’s time to be merry and the school holidays can be exactly that.

In your back yard lives a wild dog in a modern-day canine suit. We have changed their appearance and modified numerous characteristics and abilities but many instincts are still present from their untamed ancestry. Dogs display aggression as a means of communication however in the domestic world it can be very serious and extremely dangerous.
I
ndividual temperament, the environment and the relationship with their “human pack are important factors when determining the cause of any aggression. The breed of dog is not always relevant however the genetics of some dogs may be an indication of their tendency towards aggressive behaviour. A well trained dog that is socialised and safely enclosed is less likely to develop aggression problems. There are many different types of aggression and in some cases dogs will display more than one form of this behaviour. Dominant aggression is common when a dog is challenged for its position of leadership. Predatory aggression is the natural instinct to chase and combined with territorial behaviour is one of the most significant
causes of injury to people and other animals. Fear based aggression will see a dog react quickly if it is cornered or feels threatened. Maternal aggression is nature’s response when protecting their young. Food and possessive aggression can be stimulated by bowls, bones, toys or treats. Redirected aggression commonly occurs when there is a dog fight and people are bitten trying to separate the dogs. Sibling Rivalry is a form of hierarchical aggression and is an indication of instability in the social structure of a group of dogs. There may be several instances of aggressive behaviour which precede a more serious attack. Be observant of the body language when your dog is interacting with people and other animals. Many people ignore the early

warning signs such as stiffening body posture, staring eyes, raised hair on the back and an erect tail position. More obvious indicators would be growling, barking and physical charging or lunging towards the person or animal. Responsible ownership is about protecting your dog. As their owners we must be in control of their behaviour in any situation. The consequences of a dog attack are not only serious for the victim but can be fatal for the offending dog. Christmas SEASON SAFETY GUIDE
Christmas holidays are almost here and with party-going and party-giving, the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating the house, coping with inclement weather . . .everyone is more prone to have accidents during this holiday season than any other time of year. To help make this a safe and happy holiday season, here are some safety tips. During the Christmas holidays there are more cars, more people, and more confusion than any other holiday during the year. So when driving, make safety your number one job. • Before leaving for a shopping spree or a big family reunion, be sure your car is holiday safe.
• Be courteous and respect the rights of pedestrians and other drivers. • Allow extra time for heavy traffic and slippery roads. • Stay alert for the driver who has over-celebrated. • Expect the unexpected from pedestrians carrying large Christmas packages. Christmas holidays bring a dangerous combination, the throttle and the bottle. More than half the automobile accidents that occur during the Christmas holidays involve people who have been drinking. When attending a party, try the “one for one” plan, one 1 drink per hour. This spacing of drinks will help avoid getting too much
alcohol in your system. When giving a holiday party, be a friend first – then a host. • Provide non-alcoholic drinks for your quests who may not want alcohol. • Never force drinks on a guest. If they say “No,” don’t insist. • Plan to close the bar at least one hour before the end of the party. Offer coffee or soft drinks as the “one for the road.” • Never let a guest drive away from your party under the influence of alcohol. Ask someone to drive the guest home or call a cab. To all our CairnsLife readers, safe cruising this festive season!

RIDER OF THE MONTH
Tyson Sundman
Hi Tyson! Tell us a little about yourself: My name is Tyson Sundman, I am 14 years old and I go to Woree State High School. I live with my dad, mum and sister. I play bass guitar and snare drums in the school concert/marching bands. I love doing triathlons and running. At what age did you get involved with triathlons and why? I have been involved in triathlon since Year 6 (11 years old) when my PE teacher/ running coach said that I should try the sport as he was involved in it himself and thought I would be good at it. Do you have a favourite brand of bike that you prefer to ride? My favourite brand of bike is SPECIALIZED. Pump n Pedals have a great range of bikes and the staff are very friendly and helpful towards me and they always have what I need. What advice do you give to other young triathletes? Triathlon is a great sport because you aren’t just doing the same thing all the time, you have different things to do like swimming, riding and running. You never get bored and if you’re not good at one leg you always have the other two legs to make it up in. It also keeps you ultra-fit and I would say just give it a go and keep on trying to achieve your goals and don’t give up!
What is your proudest achievement competing in triathlons so far? My proudest achievement is coming 13th at the Qld School State Triathlon Championships this year in February. Do you have an idol? Who are they and why? My idol is Chris McCormack (Macca). He has been a phenomenal athlete in Triathlon over many years and also started in his teenage years. I would like to achieve what he has done one day. Which is your favourite triathlon to compete in and why? The Townsville Triathlon is my favourite because the water temperature is perfect at that time of year, the ride course has laps of a 5km circuit so the spectators can cheer you on lots of times as you go past and the run course is along the Strand which is a very nice, calming place to run. How does it make you feel when you are competing? I feel great when things are going right and I am doing well. There is no better feeling than if I am beating the competitors or closing the gap on them but sometimes it doesn’t always go to plan then I don’t feel too good but there is always another race to look forward to.
CAREER HIGHL IGHT S : • Coming 13th at Qld School Sports Tri Championships 2013 • Being in the relay team (run leg) and coming 2nd at the same Championships • 1st in my age group at the Townsville and TriPort Triathlons 2013 • 1st overall winner at Coral Coast Tri 2012 – Enticer distance • Meeting some of the Elite athletes in Triathlon at the major races • Making some great friends along the way

GROWING UP IN ITALY, NICO NEA DREAMED OF LIFE IN THE SUNNY TROPICS, BLUE SEAS AND PALM TREES. TODAY HE THANKS THE PEOPLE OF CAIRNS FOR MAKING THAT DREAM COME TRUE…
N
ico Nea has been perfecting his craft of panel repair since he was just 14-yearsold. He had just finished school when he approached a workshop to get his second-hand Vespa in working order. The owner agreed, but only if he started the panel and paint work himself. Nico, whose real name is Federico, did most of the work. But even when the Vespa was finished, the work didn’t stop. “He said he had another job for me,” he recalls. “And after that there was another, and another. There’d be a Citroen, and a Fiat, and then something else. I could tell you the first hundred cars I worked on, but after that I lost count.” Nico had discovered his passion and his calling in life. But there was another dream he wanted to make come true. “Where I grew up was very cold, and I wanted to live somewhere warm and tropical, by the sea, with palm trees, not a big city,” he says.
“If I was going to change my life I wanted to do it properly, and that’s why I chose Cairns.” Nico was 30 when he and wife Nadia arrived in Australia 14 years ago. He was sponsored and employed by a panel beating workshop, and was soon making a name for himself as one of the best. “My English wasn’t so good so I was worried I couldn’t do it but they pointed to a car and told me to fix it, and I did,” he smiles. “Then they gave me the next one and the next one.” In 2004 he started his own business, Nico Nea Paintless Dent Repair. He would start work by 6am and work up to 14 hours a day, relying on word of mouth to publicise his business, or simply letting the results speak for themselves. Since then he has continued to refine his talent for making cars look as good as new, using a high-precision dent removal technique that eliminates the need for paintwork or panel replacement. 103
CairnsLife
It takes a fierce eye for detail, a steady hand and can be painstakingly slow, but his impressive repairs have seen him trusted with thousands of vehicles, from hatchbacks and family sedans to four wheel drives and prestige cars. Nico says nothing makes him happier than seeing the face of a customer light up when they collect their pride and joy. “They can’t believe it can be fixed and they are so happy when they see it, so thankful,” he says. “But this time I am the one saying thanks, to all of my customers. The people of this beautiful, young little city have given me the opportunity to live my dream.”

The C4 Aircross is Citroen’s answer to the growing small SUV market segment. With a stylish exterior that stands out from the crowd, functional, comfortable interior and an array of safety features the C4 Aircross is a definite must to inspect and test drive.

the front end with the vertical daytime running LEDs and the wide chrome grille proudly displaying the chevron badge. From the side, the floating roof illusion is created by an inverted shark fin which points to the rear tail lights, both seen on the Hypnos concept car. Finally, the rear end is reminiscent of a C4 with a similar spoiler and rear tailgate. Intelligent 4WD - Depending on the situation the 4WD system distributes torque optimally between the front and rear wheels by taking into account driver input, road conditions and the vehicles speed. To optimise fuel consumption in “4WD” mode, a greater amount of torque is transmitted to the front wheels (around 98%), whenever road grip is sufficient. In more difficult conditions, torque may be equally distributed between axles, 50% on each. To maximize traction off road, “Lock” mode permanently distributes torque equally between axles. For urban conditions 2WD mode is the most fuel efficient by only engaging the front axle. Passive Safety - The body structure of the C4 Aircross has been constructed to be extremely stiff for precise handling, yet the body has been designed to absorb and dissipate impact in the event of a collision. In the event of a high speed impact the brake pedal is equipped with a safety
system designed to prevent protrusion into the occupant compartment. While the front bumper is designed to absorb the impact of a pedestrian accident and the bonnet features a crumple zone to reduce head injury. Seven airbags are standard across the range including: two front, two side, two curtain and a knee airbag for the driver. Créative Technologie - The Citroën C4 Aircross is now standard with keyless entry and push button start. This allows the driver to enter and start the vehicle while the key is still in their pocket. To lock the car, the driver simply presses one of the buttons on the front door handles or boot. The C4 Aircross has a voice recognition system which allows the driver to dictate simple commands to make changes to vehicle settings or make phone calls using Bluetooth. the driver is also able to stream audio wirelessly by using Bluetooth or connected by wire to the USB jack which allows for browsing of content using the steering wheel controls. Another standard feature across the range is the reverse camera which has the screen located in the rear view mirror. REEF engineering By Peta Burton
F
rom constructing mammoth sized barge doors to customizing off-road camper trailers for the Cape York region Reef Engineering has achieved many milestones this year that owners Scott and Stevie Cox can be proud of and one of their most satisfying accomplishments has been keeping their staff working during these tough economic times. “In this industry people want to see you building and they want to see what you’re building”, says Scott. “And, that’s exactly what we’ve done all year round”. In March, Carpentaria Marine Services, a regional maritime logistics company contracted Reef Engineering to a major project for 2013. Over four months 30 employees fabricated a 30-tonne barge door with 16-tonne focsles (upper deck sections) that became an engineering feat from start to finish according to Scott. “Logistically, it was an enormous challenge from building it, turning it over to finish welding, to transporting it to the barge for installation”. But for Scott’s team this contract was a challenge that brought unequivocal results. “We helped create a versatile barge that now operates under any circumstances. It can land on any island and there’s nothing it can’t load. Having completed this project I know we can do anything, big or small, on time and on budget. With good planning anything’s possible and it’s definitely reinforced our pride in the business”. Reef Engineering was also put to work on developing the SITA waste site. Again, it was a task that demanded finely tuned skills, determination
105
CairnsLife
and an entirely focused team to repair and maintain the plant as well as install new equipment. The 10 employees who were assigned the three- month job not only again proved Reef Engineering’ s enviable reputation but also its capacity to perform beyond given parameters. Creating a new breed of customised camper trailers is just another demonstration of Reef ’s business prowess and how it remains competitive. “You can’t put all your eggs in one basket these days”, says Scott, “Now we’re on to our fifth trailer and our engineer Marc McDonnell is constantly modifying the product so it works with conditions up here. The Woop Woop trailers can go anywhere, that’s why we’ve given them this name, and everything from the design, CNC profile cutting, welding and fit-out is all done in house”. Reef Engineering has also returned to its roots and is now building aluminium boats and constructing a 5.5-metre workboat. “We started our business doing repairs for the Cairns tourist boat fleet”, reminisces Scott and that was during the recession. “I’d go down to the wharf after 6pm and it was just myself and another person working out of a ute doing 10 to 12 jobs a week”. Now Scott runs his business with wife Stevie, the Accounts Manager, out of a substantial-sized workshop that’s “still too small” with 22 workers who are flat out with more than 100 jobs a week. “We’ve just employed a workshop manager and will eventually move to a bigger premises and do bigger jobs”, says Scott. “And, we’ll also remember to take time off ”.

SULLIVAN 1. Who are you and what business do you have? I am a Landscape Designer and horticulturist that owns and runs Hortulus Landscapes, a Landscape Design, Construction and Garden Maintenance business. We have just opened another arm to the business, 338 Hortulus, which is a design space retailing plants, pots and outdoor living homewares here in Port Douglas. 2. How long have you been based in Port Douglas? I’ve been in Port for 15 years, but created my first major landscape here 17 years ago while living in Cairns. After that job I was asked to return to Port Douglas to work on a larger project and it instantly felt like home. Douglas Shire is full of passionate and creative people that are really engaging. They’ve all chosen to live in a small town but so many of them have worked really hard to create a luxury destination with such a small population base. You just have to look at the quality of restaurants, tours, artists and tradespeople that have come together to do this over the last 30 years. I also love Mossman at the moment. With the Mossman Gorge Centre, the Saturday morning markets and cafes there is a real sense of community, and there are some great initiatives about to happen combined with our New Council that is very exciting. 3. What can you tell us about 338 Hortulus space? 338 Hortulus is about a fun, creative space where people can come and get reinvigorated about their gardens. They can see interesting garden plants, sculptures, pots and a small selection of very different homewares. We have left the garden beds in place for gardeners to see how the plants actually grow. In our Landscape Designs we have been trying to work with local plant collectors over the last 10 years to bring some of the most beautiful and unusual native and exotic plants into our gardens, however, they have to be hardy and be able to work for our clients. It is often hard for the general public to get to these plants so 338 Hortulus is about giving access to plants like Scented Ixora (Ixora odorata), Heliconia irrasa, Lotus, and Grevilleas that actually suit our coastal Wet Tropics climate. It was a natural progression from our Landscape Design and Construction Business to invite people in to see what we do, as there are so few places now to get good information on plants around Cairns. 4. What is your favorite, planned or built landscape and why? Wow, too hard! There are so many great landscapes. I think The Australia Garden at Cranbourne annex of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens is one of the most progressive definitions of Australian landscape we have
seen in decades, while Gardens by the Bay in Singapore is fantastic for its scale. Landscape is really about people and how we interact with a given space, and they provide us, often unknowingly, with an emotional response to that given space. Whilst I like minimalist spaces I think I feel far more comfortable in less contrived spaces, that are calming. 5. A garden must be pleasing to look at but practical to maintain. If you could give one tip to gardeners in Tropical North Queensland, what would it be? Restraint! It is too easy to go to the nursery and pick up 30 different plants that look good in a little pot, only to find three years later half died and the others have reached 20 meters high! Plan the garden to suit your lifestyle. If you have a busy lifestyle, plan the garden very simply with only a few different species and plant “en mass”. Then you can add the colour and accent plants as the garden establishes. Landscape is an art form that most people learn over their lifetime. If you want a great garden sooner, without the expensive mistakes, engage a good Landscape Designer to at least talk with you about your layout, soil and plants. 6. Garden Voices by Anne Latreille is unique. It is the first book to embark on a study of designers who demonstrate a deep understanding of the Australian environment and an ability to work creatively with it. You must have a great sense of achievement, being one of the 23 key garden and landscape designers of Australia involved in this publication? It has been a very humbling experience being featured in Garden Voices. I met Anne Latreille about 12 years ago after she’d been up to visit David Leech at Yungaburra, who is also in the book. She had the idea of writing but wasn’t sure of the angle the book would take, and I had no idea of the other Landscape Designers she was looking at. I only found out about the other designers at the Australian Landscape Conference when the book was released and I am quite in awe of the significant historic figures featured like Edna Walling, Ellis Stones and Walter Burley Griffin. I don’t think my work is anywhere as significant, but the common thread seems to be the philosophies that we follow in working with the land, and how we interpret the environment. The book is a great read not only for garden tips but in understanding how Australians have begun to interpret our identity through the art of landscape. 7. What is the most rewarding and memorable garden design you have completed this year? It is a Concept design for Mossman Botanic Gardens.
A really exciting idea based on the Wet Tropics Native Flora that is so rare and hard to get to, to study in its habitat. There is also importance put on tropical world food, and the genetic resource that we need for future food and local hinterland business for the Cairns region. There is so much we don’t know about the Wet Tropics and plants of Cape York. I’m sure there are a lot of plants still to be studied, or even yet to be discovered that will be very valuable to us. As a project, Botanic Garden don’t get designed and built very often these days, and they are the forefront of interaction between the public and landscape, so design is extremely important. This project will bring an amazing group of very knowledgeable people together that would be so inspiring to work with. 8. What inspires you and why? People inspire me. I have been really privileged in my life to have had many motivated and creative people around me. It has really encouraged me to push my own ideas, keep learning and to get caught up in their enthusiasm. When you get to interact with people like Alan and Susan Carle from Botanical Ark, or artists like Jill Chism, the energy just rubs off on you. Even the people who work with me are great. They bring different ways of viewing things to our discussions that often leads to all of us creating something better. What it comes down to is, you get out of life what you put in. 9. What work do you most enjoy doing? There are two parts that I really love in my work. The first is designing a garden when I get to work creatively with a client and often their architect. It’s not that often that architects connect with the environment, but when they do it is a pleasure to frame the building rather than having the task of softening the structure. The second part is, I actually love growing plants. This is a learning thing where I get to know a plant and its potential, which ultimately allows me to use the plant effectively in the landscape. This has become part of what sets our Landscapes apart. 10. What has been your biggest highlight professionally for 2013? It’s been a great couple of years professionally, with being awarded Queensland’s Best Landscape Design and Construction in two categories from Landscape Queensland, for a landscape we completed here in Port Douglas, last year. This year we have had two of our gardens, Mali Mali and Kai Hai, featured in the book, “Tropical Gardens Hidden Exotic Paradises” by Manuela Roth. Only four Australian Gardens made the book. On top of that having Garden Voices detail my career in the Far North has been fantastic. It seems to make all the hard work, mud and sweat worthwhile!

him. At first, he doesn’t think much of it, but within minutes his throat begins to swell and he is struggling for air. If this had happened in a city or even close to a town, getting help would be as simple as calling an ambulance and getting the patient to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. But when station hand Cameron Fox found himself in this very situation last year, he was working on a property north of Augathella in Western Queensland, at least an hour’s drive from the nearest hospital. Cameron had only minutes to live when his workmates swung into action and called the Flying Doctors. They reached Dr Minh LeCong, the Doctor on call in Cairns. From the symptoms described he knew Cameron was experiencing anaphylactic shock, and immediately gave
instructions to administer adrenalin from the Royal Flying Doctor Service Medical Chest. Four injections of adrenalin later, Cameron showed signs of recovery. He was then driven to meet the ambulance, which a second RFDS doctor had organised to leave from Augathella, and spent the night in hospital. Cameron’s life was saved, only because the property had a Royal Flying Doctor Service medical chest. The chest holds vital pharmaceutical and non pharmaceutical items for treating emergency and medical ailments. At first glance, it appears to be an unremarkable piece of equipment – a large sturdy green metal box. But it’s a lifesaver. It holds around 90 commonly used medications and first aid items. People living or working in isolated areas don’t have the same ready access to medical supplies as city people, and it’s not always possible to make a three or four hour round trip to get help. Royal Flying Doctor Service Queensland coordinator of the Medical Chest Program Sally Mitchell says the chests provide security and peace of mind for people living and working in rural and remote Australia. “They rely on the Flying Doctor to provide them with emergency and acute health care,” she says.

“Having an RFDS Medical Chest means they have access to the necessary medications and first aid items they need. This in turn means they can often avoid having to travel a long way to get medical help, or can avert an emergency evacuation.” 2012 was the 70th birthday of the RFDS Medical Chest. There are now around 2800 chests located across Australia, including 1200 in Queensland. The Medical Chest was initially proposed by Dr Keith Sweetman in 1939. He found that a lot of radio time was being wasted by asking outposts what was available in their first aid kits, the majority of which were haphazard collections of patent medicines. In 1942, the RFDS Federal Council decided on a standardised first aid kit for use in remote areas, and this became the Medical Chest. It has gone through many changes since it was first established, and today includes a wide range of prescription only medications that must be used under the direction of a RFDS doctor. The chests can be found in many varied locations across Australia, such as homesteads, roadhouses, hotels, outback schools, national parks and remote communities.

Some difficulties in redeeming possessions that have been promised, you might have to engage a professional person for help. Real estate and land could be playing a big part in this periods dealing. A good time to push personal ambitions and try for something that could be available on the next rung up. Keep your criticisms of work mate’s actions to yourself or you could say or do something you may later regret. Not a good period to handle personal finances, so guard against unnecessary spending, wiser to buy only what is essential and pay cash, many will be changing address or involved in renovations. The opportunity to take off on an entirely new path, however make sure you read the fine print of any document before singing and verbal agreements made on the spur of the moment can be regretted later. Think anything out three times first.
An interest or hobby could take you away from your usual surroundings and give you a new lease of life. Health should improve and talk about moving or travel is very prominent. You could be able to help someone in need. An interesting period coming up. Health should be good, better aspects than is usual. You will have to watch what you agree to or problems with the law or authorities can eventuate. A bit of a break from your usual haunts will work wonders for you. Someone close could be acting out of character and confusing you. Wiser to defer any confrontations ad you could receive a definite refusal. For the cautious and courteous there is progress on all levels. New people coming into your life can advance career ambitions many will swing from background to foreground positions. Watch your advances however in case you jump into something you shouldn’t.
Thee should be some evidence about improved financial matters very soon. Very busy social life expected and new people to meet and success in romantic matters also indicated. You may feel you are going nowhere at the moment this will soon pass and the chance to reach one of your goals presents itself. Try to avoid people or situations you know that could annoy as your temper wont hold. Others may need your help and you could profit in the long run by giving assistance. Someone soon with the right clout could offer the right chance to rapidly improve your career or financial affairs. Legal affairs are better and deferred until after June. There could be an attack upon your credibility. Energy levels rising and your feeling of joy of life about to return. More cooperations from people around you and a lot of what you did in the past is starting to pay off now. Not wise to neglect your love affairs for career ambitions and the wise ones of you will be absolutely honest with their spouses.

Watch your eating habits and your weight this is a period when the good things in life are irristable. Some problems with relationships but this should only be temporary and soon the peace and calm you hope for should prevail. A varied and rewarding period as far as daily life is concerned and the chance of financial luck for the hard worker, promotions and salary increases for most of you. Someone new in your life can bring big changes a tricky period generally and for the married outside activities could be cutting across your domestic activities and this wont endear you to your mate. A good time to ask for favours from those in a position to help. Financial pressures should be easing and for many a very signified financial luck. Energy levels could be down, wiser to sleep at night and don’t skip meals.
There could be a few surprises around if you are planning travel even it should be mostly a favourable period it would be wise to check everything first. Some luck with a person born under the sign of cancer. A good time to get away from it all if possible. Plans could go astray. However this is only a temporary condition. Wiser to keep the peace at home instead of provoking friction. Although a good period in general, it is wise to seek the help of an expert before agreeing to anything that could tie up your money. Romantic ventures could surprise during this period. Papers you sign during this period could have a negative affect upon your work or health; so check out the details first. A promise made earlier this year should eventuate about this time.
Help and assistance coming from unexpected quarters and it should be a good time to start a new course in some healthy matters, exercise or vegetarian cooking. Keep out of the way of gossipmongers. Personal problems should be sorting themselves out. Maybe its best to ask people around you their opinion and it should clear the air. Someone nice could show and interest in your future plans. Your thinking process should be clearer and the ideas people amongst you are quite brilliant. Communicating on a personal level presents a few problems. Keep to the proven facts when expressing opinions around loved ones. Energy levels could be low. Wise to ease up and think carefully about your future plans. Many could get the blame for mistakes they did not make. Keep receipts and check you are not paying twice for the same thing.

You might have to keep quiet and out of the way of troublesome people for the next few weeks to avoid arguments in your circle of friends. Your love life could be in for a boost and some happy moments around the corner. Anything you work out ahead will work out successfully. New friends could change your expectations and give financial support when you need it most. An object you thought lost forever shows up. Many will find that what they feared most was only an illusion. Contacts will be established that could improve your career prospects. Superiors and family should be more supportive. Make sure everything is in writing and that you double heck any information before you sign. Major moves are indicated and long distance travels for many a distinct possibility.
You might need to take care of your mouth in more ways than one dental problem could occur and a slip of the tongue could get you into trouble. Better period financially. New ventures and greater independence for you and many will be planning major changes, moving to distant places. Some will become more involved with the entertainment industry. This should be a happier period. Some will be inclined to take on more work and added responsibility. Health improves and efforts spent will bring big rewards and a new way of earning money being offered. People will be paying more attention to you than is usual and you could expand into a new career venture. Not wise to pay in advance for any services.
Travel plans could be altered so be prepared to be flexible. Some very tempting propositions coming your way, keep a clear mind of what you really want. Surprise gains in financial matters. Communication could have some big problems so try to sort out your domestic affairs soon. Big changes in career matters and some improvements on your home environment will surprise. Dealing with the right people will be successful but keep your plans under your hat for now. Domestic matters could try to interfere with your future plans so keep the peace if you can. Not a good time to invite anyone to stay with you and make sure no one is in a position to steal from you. Someone might need your assistance in emotional problems and some luck in games of chance. Payments from past could help you out of a financial problem. Surprise encounter could turn into a romantic interlude if you do not let convention stop you. Back to basics will help you to evaluate your present situation and do something positive about it. Improvements might not go as fast as you would like them to but they happen just the same. You might have to go back in time to find solutions to your present problems. Surprising news from a distance will put you in a reflective mood for some happy moments in the future.
Things should be moving faster and better than they have for some time and you should be able to achieve some of your long-term aims. Very good period romantically, someone seems to have his or her eye on you. Good period for re starting many of your former enterprises also a good time to find things you thought lost. Money matters are improving and more work is available. You could be made to alter your plans by someone you least expected, but do not spoil the time by sulking about it. Your chances to get something done could be minimal just now. So many opportunities you could find it hard to choose go for the familiar one and leave the others on hold. Very good luck could help you out of a tricky situation.
Rewards from deeds done in the past and recognition of your achievements most likely. Prosperity should be just around the corner for many and your hunches should pay well during this period. Not a good period for mixing business with pleasure ad problems could arise from communications breakdown. Romance is in a better position and some happy moments are possible. Very good period for romance and matters of the heart. If you are one of the seekers you could stumble overt the right solutions by mistake. Do not borrow or lend during this period. Keep a cool head in any purchase as mistakes are possible and you might not get your moneys worth. Also do not get involved in other people’s financial problems.
