Cairns Iron Woman ready to race TANYA MURPHY

BIKES are being racked, marquees are going up and local athletes are elated that the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns Asia Pacific Championship will finally take place this Sunday September 27, after being postponed over for three months due to theCOVID-19 restrictions. Tablelands resident Megan Hendry is one of the highest ranked locals in the female 30-35 age category and said she was beyond excited to finally get back into competing after a year marked by numerous race cancellations. Megan has been triathlon racing since 2014 and in previous years, competed in two full and two half Ironman Cairns events, as well as the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, and said she felt well prepared for Sunday’s race. “I was lucky enough to compete in triathlons in Geelong and Mooloolaba earlier this year but there haven’t

been any other races since March because they all got cancelled due to COVID-19, so it’s been a long time without racing,” she said. “When I found out about the Ironman being postponed, it definitely threw a bit of a spanner in the works but I just had to modify my training schedule, which gave me more time for preparation and base building which will hopefully work in my favour. “Public swimming pools closed during lockdown which made it tricky for some people, but I was spoiled because I live near Lake Eacham so I was training there two or three times a week.” Megan said she trains up to three times a day, seven days a week and said it was a big commitment fitting it around her three part-time jobs, but balance was important. “It’s definitely a matter of time management to make sure you have time for yourself and your friends and family, and I’m lucky I have

super supportive parents, family and friends,” she said. Megan said her tip for first-time competitors was to enjoy the day and make the most of it. “The Cairns course is one of the most beautiful Ironman locations in the world, it’s a stunning cycle route to get to ride without any cars, so enjoy it,” she said. “You’ve done all the hard work now, it’s just a matter of going out there, enjoying the day and taking everything you can from it.” She said she would spend Saturday relaxing with her feet up and carb-loading with spaghetti Bolognese and garlic bread. Ironman spokesperson Craig Heydon said the support for the event had been amazing despite the challenges it had gone through to adjust to COVID-19 regulations. “Although the event normally attracts up to 3000 competitors from around

the world, this year we have around 1000 competitors registered which is great considering that nearly all of them are Queenslanders,” he said. Event organisers have worked tirelessly with the Queensland Government departments, local councils and others to develop an approved COVID Safe Event Plan to enable the race to go ahead. Spectators are assured of an exciting race, but grandstands will not be provided at the finish line, teams will not be allowed to run over the finish line as a group, hand sanitiser will abound, and COVID safe officers will patrol the event to encourage spectators to maintain social distancing. Booking a table at an Esplanade restaurant or bar will be a good way to view the event comfortably while following social distancing rules.

New rainforest aviary a huge hit ONE of Australia’s leading wildlife experiences, Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas, celebrated the grand opening of their new aviary, the Rainforest Habitat last Saturday September 19. Hundreds of visitors flocked to the Habitat for the opening which also coincided with its 30th birthday celebrations, featuring lots of fun activities and special prices to mark the start of the school holidays. The new area takes visitors for a multi-level adventure through lush flora while interacting with rainforest inhabitants like Cassowaries, Pademelons, and a wide variety of stunning tropical birds. New features in Rainforest Habitat include the breath-taking Birdseye Bridge which takes you up to the treetops and Licuala Tower which offers stunning views of the whole aviary. Over the past 18 months, the wildlife sanctuary has been busily upgrading the park with two massive new aviaries, the world’s first

Wildlife Habitat Manager Andrew Hearn said the projects were creating construction and operations jobs and were part of Wildlife Habitat’s efforts to bring tourists back to Port Douglas. “We are incredibly grateful to the local visitors that have been supporting Wildlife Habitat while borders are

‘Extraordinary year’ for council THE financial impact of COVID-19 has resulted in Council finishing the 2019-20 financial year with a $1.6 million operating deficit. Council’s Annual Report, adopted at today’s Ordinary Meeting, described 2019-20 as “an extraordinary year for Council as well as the general community” because of the unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Council continued to invest heavily in community infrastructure by delivering a $165.5 million capital works program in the 2019-20 financial year.

The opening of the Rainforest Habitat marks completion of stage two of Wildlife Habitat’s three major improvement projects. These three projects are the Nocturnal Habitat which opened in 2019, the Rainforest Habitat and CrocArena which will open in 2021. The cost of the projects will come in over $2,300,000 which has been funded by the CaPTA Group and the Australian Government with $900,000 being provided through the Community Development Grants programme.

Friday, Sept 25, 2020

This included more than $50 million in transport and mobility projects, $54 million on water and waste infrastructure, and $13 million on improving parks and leisure facilities throughout the city. Council also provided more than $7.8 million through numerous grant streams, including $3.4 million to support Tourism Tropical North Queensland, almost $1.4 million in rates-based assistance for not-for-profit groups and sponsorships, and $797,000 for events. The report noted that the full impacts of COVID-19 on Council are still unknown. Emilia (5) and Oliver (4) meeting some of the residents of the new Rainforest Habitat. shut,” he said. Brook Allen who visited with her two children Emilia (5) and Oliver (4) said the new Rainforest Habitat was a hit. “It really gives you the feeling of being in a real-life rainforest - the new tower and treehouses really help you get in and amongst the

display and the animals,” she said. Brayden Wilson from Port Douglas said it got the thumbs up from his children. “Climbing the tower and seeing all the wildlife was wonderful, the kids got a thrill crossing the suspended bridge,” he said.

However, Council has adopted a three-year recovery plan that looks to balance the need for maintaining essential service levels, the delivery of the capital works program, providing economic stimulus and keeping rates affordable. Additionally, Council has developed a Financial Hardship Policy which provides extended repayment plans and interest waivers for ratepayers adversely affected by COVID-19. The Annual Report highlights the many programs that were delivered throughout the year, in line with Council’s strategic goals, which relate to Economy, Natural Assets, Liveability, Community and Culture, and Serving the Community.

HIT AT FIRST SIGHT

TANYA MURPHY Local singing sensation Drew Brauer has channelled his experience as a participant on the 2020 season of reality TV show “Married at First Sight” (MAFS) into a new single, to be released on Thursday, October 1. The song “At First Sight,” is a romantic love song showcasing Drew’s signature sound of soft melodic vocals and will be released along with a lyric video which explores love in all its forms. I was treated to a sneak preview of the video clip and can warn you to be prepared for goosebumps and “all the feels” on October 1 when you view what may become one of Drew’s biggest hits yet, sure to be a favourite at proposals, weddings, and anniversaries. The artwork for the single shows hands reaching out to each other from two smart phones, symbolising people staying connected to each other and even finding love during COVID-19 lockdown, proving the indomitable spirit of love throughout all adversities. Drew, who performs under the name Drewboy, wrote the song during the intense sixweek MAFS filming process in Sydney, which fatefully, did not result in a “happily ever after” ending for him.

“The MAFS experience was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and although I did not ultimately find love on the show, I definitely grew and learned a lot from the experience,” he said. “I saw others finding love, and there were some really special, beautiful moments and I channelled those feelings into this song. “I dug deep and realised that for every successful relationship out there, there was a moment when they were strangers, because everyone’s a stranger until they first meet. “As a musician I have played at loads of weddings and seen that magical moment where two lives become one, and it’s amazing to reflect on the fact that every love story starts with looking into the eyes of a stranger.” The former high voltage electrician / linesman grew up on his parents’ cattle and sheep farm in the tiny outback town of Tara and couldn’t be more grounded and down to earth, so it’s easy to see how the MAFS experience was confronting for him. After being left “at the altar” two months before his real-life wedding to a former fiancé seven years ago, Drew turned to music to channel his feelings into something positive and has been living

out his dream to touch others’ lives with his music and volunteer work ever since. The year 2020 was a difficult one for many performing artists, as they were unable to perform live shows during COVID-19 restrictions, however Drew took it in his stride and used the time to grow his mental health charity “Kick On,” and write material for an upcoming album, of which this single is just a taste. After the screening of MAFS and the rollercoaster of media attention it generated, lockdown gave Drew a chance to retreat to the grounding solitude of his parents’ farm to focus on family and what’s really important in life, before heading back to Cairns. “I’m not seeing anyone, and I’m not on any dating apps. I’m enjoying the single life while focusing on a new business venture, my charity and my music,” he said. The song will be available to listen to on all digital music streaming platforms from 7am on October 1, and to view the video clip simply follow Drewboy on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Drewboy will perform at the Tanks on Friday, October 16, with details and tickets to be released soon via his social media.

Sea-rious fun at Seafest

Lifesavers on display SEVENTY years of Surf Life Saving in Far North Queensland will be celebrated at Cairns Museum this school holidays. The ‘Safe in the Water’ exhibition, which opened to the public on Monday September 21, explores the history, achievements and changing face of Surf Life Saving in the Far North. It is a collaboration between Surf Life Saving North Queensland and Cairns Museum, sponsored by Cairns Regional Council. The exhibition combines historic images, costumes and equipment with contemporary accounts of patrol, competition and community service, including the wearing of pantyhose by lifesavers before lycra became fashionable, and stories of lifesaver “guinea pigs” used in research into treatment of marine stings. Rachel Wynberg, president of Surf Life Saving North Queensland, said the branch was founded in 1950 to represent Cairns, Etty Bay and Mission Beach Surf Life Saving clubs. Yorkey’s Knob (now Ellis Beach) and Port Douglas joined later and the five clubs now make up the North

Queensland branch. Australia’s Surf Life Saving movement was founded in 1907 with its focus on patrol, rescue and resuscitation inspired by the British Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS). The RLSS brought the Bronze Medallion certification to Cairns and in 1917 local RLSS members began swimming lessons at Freshwater Creek. The Cairns branch began local beach patrols in 1924. Suzanne Gibson, manager of Cairns Museum, said the exhibition showcased stories and objects from the five local SLS clubs from Mission Beach to Port Douglas and explored how the Surf Life Saving movement had responded to the unique challenges of patrolling our tropical waters. These included the installation of watch towers, shark sirens and then shark nets in the early 1960s, and the trialling of lifesavers wearing pantyhose in the late 1970s as protection against marine stingers, The ‘Safe in the Water’ exhibition will be open this Saturday, and will run until the end of November.

Marine artist seeks local input

ARTIST: Jenn Payne in her studio “COCONUT

Shores”, a new exhibition by local artist Jenn Payne will be shown at Mission Beach Community Arts Centre from October 2 to 13 2020. On display will be Jenn’s tropical series, a collection of beaches, flora, fauna and people. Her style is unmistakable with vibrant colours, bold brushstrokes and a confident approach. These works capture the beautiful and unique coastal region of the far north. Jenn has a natural gift for observation and an ability to interpret her subject matter with creativity and freshness.

Her paintings encourage us to pause and think about the tropical north and how Australian cultural imagery is grounded in bright tropical paintings. This is confirmed in the bursts of colour in Jenn’s works that typify Australian light, summer and lifestyle. Jenn Payne was born in Melbourne but fell in love with tropical Queensland tropics many years ago. Her love for painting and weaving began in 1982 after meeting two Australian major artisans, Noel Wood and Bruce Arthur on Dunk Island. Settling in the Mission Beach mainland

in 1985 she worked on a local tourist boat before earning a Skipper’s ticket which deepened her respect for the ocean as well as marine life particularly fish and the Great Barrier Reef. She was one of the first lady captains in the North with a ship’s master of 24 metres. ‘I fell in love with boats and the sea so I bought my own small yacht and sailed around the islands on my days off. I present unique aspects in artwork which is a combination of both underwater scenes and land form.’ Jenn stated, ‘I photograph my own work

and then I artistically interpret the beautiful essence of each scene. Painting is important to me and each work expresses the joy and spontaneity of tropical island and mainland life.’ Jenn opened her own private gallery in 2020 and buyers are invited to view her collection. She featured in the Australian Artist Magazine in 2010 and many of her works are held in private collections worldwide. The Mission Arts Centre at MARCS Park is open 10am till 2pm.

Calling all local marine experts and general public who have a special interest in the ocean that surrounds us! This weekend will be the last chance to contribute to the work of Neville Cichon, an Adelaide-based visual artist who has spent the past two weeks as a Tanks Arts Centre artist-in-residence, researching and creating work that looks at the human impact on marine environments. He will be at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre on September 25, 26 and 27 from 10am to 1pm and invites the public to drop in to see his work, discuss his project and share thoughts on how marine ecosystems are coping with all of the challenges humans are throwing at them. Esplanade Dining Precinct revamp is on budget COUNCIL is expected to deliver its revamped and rejuvenated Esplanade Dining Precinct on budget.

A report tabled at Council today stated that detailed design has now reached 60 per cent completion, with a cost estimate of $28 million to complete the entire project, including the Dining Precinct stages and Shields St between Abbott St and the Esplanade.

Mullets for mental health FIVE members of the Cairns mental health team have busted through the boundaries of good taste to shape and grow mullets during the month of September and raise funds for mental health research. The team of doctors and psychologists, Jan-Paul Kwasik, Sean Mayne, Mike Tervit, Luke Frazer and Ajay Macharouthu are channelling their inner Tiger King look to raise money for the Black Dog Institute’s “Mullets For Mental Health” campaign.

The team of mulleted superheroes has already raised more than $16,000 but are asking locals to dig deep to help them reach their goal of $20,000 by September 30. The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit facility for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Dr Mike Tervit, Clinical Director Mental Health at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service said

In May, Council endorsed fast-tracking the project, with detailed design and renewal of the footpath starting in July, while developing the detailed design.

In order to facilitate an accelerated program, Council has adopted a three-stage delivery of the Esplanade works. Stage one, which involved construction of the 3.4-metre footpath, has now been completed. Work is progressing concurrently on stages two and three – the second stage involves the laying of outdoor dining pavement and installation of awnings (to be completed April 2021), while stage 3 includes construction of the road and landscaping, with an expected finished of April 2021.

The Shields St works are also expected to be completed April 2021. Council also endorsed the establishment of the Esplanade Dining Precinct Advisory Committee, which includes the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Terry James, Division 5 Councillor Amy Eden and CEO John Andrejic, to assist the project meeting the new timeframes. Two 3D fly-throughs of the Esplanade Dining Precinct can be viewed on Council website at https://www.cairns.qld.gov. au/council/major-projects/esplanade-dining-precinct

managing mental health was always important, but especially so during COVID-19. “People with pre-existing mental health problems are at risk of experiencing higher anxiety levels during the COVID-19 outbreak,” he said. Making way for emergency vehicles YOU know your road rules, and now’s your chance to prove it. A fire engine displaying flashing blue and red lights and sounding its alarm is approaching traffic. Is the green car allowed to cross over onto the wrong side of the road to give way to the emergency vehicle?

We all face this situation most weeks here in Cairns. There’s a good chance our emergency vehicles are on their way to save someone’s life, so you’re allowed to drive onto the wrong side of the road to get out of their way and speed up their journey. Giving way to emergency

vehicles should always be done with the utmost care. Make sure you’re looking after your own safety (and everyone else’s on the road) first. Watch out for police, fire and ambulance vehicles by being alert to your surroundings, looking ahead and checking your mirrors regularly

Additional funds to help those facing surgery Facing surgery can be a daunting time for anyone. How long will I be off work for? Will I be in pain after surgery? What happens with…? So many questions and for many it can become information overload. Cairns Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) for the past five years has funnelled many of the patients requiring elective surgery through a newly established Multidisciplinary Preadmission Clinic. The recent announcement by the Queensland Government of major funding for the construction and commissioning

of a permanent home for the Clinic is welcome news for patients and clinicians alike. Since 2015 the Clinic has assessed and prepared patients for their elective surgery. Combining the services of Anaesthetics, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy as well as surgical departments this nurse-led clinic has streamlined the preparation for surgery for thousands of patients each year. Operating across several locations this new clinic will be combined into a central location in B-Block creating

increased surgical and procedural activity as well as offering increased telehealth appointment for patients throughout the regional and further north. Marie Kelly, CHHHS acting executive director of medical services described the Clinic as a one-stop shop, allowing patients needing elective surgery or related procedures to be assessed by clinicians from several services, in a central location via face-to-face or telehealth video link. The new clinic is expected to open in 2021.

Scrunch or fold? A universal question needing answers WAYNE’S WORLD

WELCOME

back to Wayne’s World – my very distinctive view on all matters of grave importance and essential in ensuring our universe continues to function and thrive. Now, here is a dirty, grubby subject, that like it or not, we all face every day. Toilet paper – now not just one discussion piece, not two but three very low down topics we need to flush out in greater detail. First is the much argued

topic of how the dunny roll is placed on the wall holder. Now do you have the roll where it is easily ripped over the top or heaven forbid fumbled out of sight and underneath. Second is how many sheets do you use for one wipe. Now I am told that the standard is five. But paint me purple, I find this number dangerously close to finger dipping so for me it is eight. Third and not the least important is how the package

is delivered. Do you quickly scrunch it up swipe and release or do you delicately fold it up and do the dainty wipe or are you the hand wrapper for use of both sides and squirm off the hand to flush. Well here’s hoping ya chooks don’t turn into emus and kick your dunny door down. See you next week for some more earth-shattering insights to life. Wayne.

DAINTREE RIVER The environment is the attraction to the Daintree, building a bridge will destroy the environment Roger, Mossman

Family, friends and local - the cornerstone of our lives A few months ago we all had the opportunity to hit the re-set button on our lives. Perhaps this would be the best thing to come from this COVID-19 pandemic. We had an opportunity to step off the daily ritual treadmill and spend time with our families and assess priorities and reorder our lives. There appears to be one common thread that weaves through all our lives at the moment. We are increasingly aware of and placing greater importance upon family, friends and local. We have come to realise that we really need all three in equal proportion in our lives. Our families and friends have always been important to us, but I believe we cherish them even more now. I have family and friends interstate and overseas. The tales regarding lockdown, the impact upon relationships as well as mental health and lifestyle leave us all counting our blessings here in Cairns. I truly feel blessed that we have dodged a bullet here in Cairns, and it would appear that many feel the same. As a community we have stood tall and followed the regulations, there appears to be very few ‘Karens’ in Cairns. What is also heartening is the way our community has embraced our local businesses and supported the ‘store with a door’. Whilst I do understand some businesses are still doing it tough, it would appear that the FNQ community has stepped up with a heightened awareness of local and supported our business community. Local is the lifeblood. Local will employ locals. Local businesses are there when we have an issue. We can face-to-face them. No call centre off-shore or interstate. It needs to be about locals supporting local businesses AND local business must do the right thing by locals. Any local based business needs to give customers compelling reasons why they as a business should be supported. This ‘life re-set’ has been a good thing for many of us. In the coming months and years we will all reap the benefits from our ‘re-set’. Family, friends and local – I trust these will be the cornerstones for our lives. Peter McCullagh Editor

U3A Cairns Inc. was established in 1990, classes were held in private homes and various halls around town with a skeleton committee and not many more members. We are proud and thankful for the vision of the founding members. The original constitution is dated 23 April 1990. Our membership is steadily growing in our very own centre and we offer well over 30 programs covering a wide range of classes, activities and some social events too. Currently there is pressure to expand the U3A centre to meet increased numbers. The Membership is the strength of the organisation whether as participants, organisers or administrators. It only works with all engaged. Our Members share a thirst for knowledge, a desire to learn and a willingness to share freely with others. It is necessary to be a Member of U3A Cairns Inc. in order to attend classes. Cairns U3A classes include art and craft, book clubs, bridge and other games, bush walking, cinema, cooking shows, dancing, exercises to music and singing, health related activities, seven language classes, luncheon club, memory teasers – see the monthly U3A bulletin for further details. Volunteer Tutors come from all walks of life: Professors, businessmen and women, teachers and people who wish to continue growing their knowledge for the fun of it and the satisfaction of putting something back into society.. If there’s one thing what gets me miffed, its seeing smokers flicking their butts onto the ground. Oh some even take the care to place them carefully into the gutter, very thoughtful. But are they aware these butts in the gutter end up in our rivers and eventually in the ocean. Plastics in our waterways is an enormous issue. A university in the UK reported two years ago that the average person consumes the equivalent of a credit card in plastic every year from eating seafood with micro plastics in them. Cigarette butts contain dangerous chemical, billions of them each year are smoked in Australia and billions of butts end up being thrown away. Smokers, if you want to smoke, that’s ok, but do not discard your butts. dispose of them responsibly. I do not want to see our oceans filled with cigarette butts. Its bad enough that they are filling with plastics. Sarah Port Douglas

Power words that drive your advertising and sales PETER MCCULLAGH

WORDS

are powerful, words create, build and live long after the event has passed. Effective communication is all about being understood, and succinctly conveying a clear, unambiguous message. Consider some of the the great communicators of our day…. “Ours is not to reason why……” – J F Kennedy “I did but see her passing by….” – Sir Robert Menzies “I have a dream……” – Martin Luther King “Scumbag……” – Paul Keeting “how dare you” – Greta Thunberg Language is evocative; it paints a word picture in our minds building emotion, thoughts and gains a response from you or others. 1. YOU Now that makes it personal, you would agree? Research constantly shows that the word you, is

the most powerful word to use in marketing copy. Using it in headlines speaks directly to the reader. After all, it is all about you. 2. RESULTS We are all looking for solutions, answers to our problems and questions. Results are what we seek, using the word results, or even, proven results speaks volumes and starts to address some of the fundamental reasons why we are shopping or web surfing. 3. HEALTH Health and wellbeing are important personal motivators. Using health within a headline is a guaranteed attention grabber. 4. GUARANTEE This is a tick of approval, the statement that this will work.

and they will love the results. 5. DISCOVER We all like to be pioneers, adventurous by nature, and discover captures our sense of curiosity and can deliver additional customers to your business. Discover the proven benefits of… 6. LOVE An all-time favourite. What won’t we do for love? Love plays upon the emotions, creates a strong tangible connection between your statement and the thoughts and emotions of the reader. You will sults……

love

the

re-

7. PROVEN Closely related to our other top words, results, and guarantee, proven represents security and trust in the minds of the reader.

No mistakes here, this is guaranteed to make you sit up and take notice.

Proven reduces your customers fear of mistake, if it worked for them, it will work for me

Using the word guarantee, reassures the reader that they are not making a mistake, this is tried and tested

8. SAFETY In keeping with health, safety is all about personal well-being as well as a

sense of quality and enduring strength for your products and services 9. SAVE It’s hard enough to earn it, we want to save it as well. Many times it’s not the final price that is critical; it’s how much you save. Save is best expressed in terms of dollars and not percentages. Save $50 is easier to understand than 25% off the original price of $200. 10.NEW Very similar to discover. New is all about seeking a different approach, a new way to save, a new product with guaranteed results. We like to tell others about something new we have found, a new restaurant, new product, new way to… . These ten words are powerful, when used in advertising, brochures, websites or speech; they speak directly to us, involving us in an evocative way. Use them and see the difference.

Jobkeeper Update DR RAY HAMEY

Businesses encouraged to complete survey

CAIRNS Chamber of Commerce is encouraging all local businesses to complete the CCIQ Suncorp Pulse Survey of business conditions for the September 2020 quarter.

The Survey closes at 5pm on Monday October 5 and seeks feedback and what’s impacting your business today, and what will influence your decision-making over

the next three months.

so in Cairns,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer Patricia O’Neill said as many completed surveys as possible were needed to help the Chamber get the best outcomes for Cairns businesses.

“The hot topic questions throughout the survey aim to understand the specific effects the coronavirus has had on Queensland Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

“The COVID-19 outbreak has undoubtedly had a substantial effect on the majority of businesses, but especially

“Most people take less than 10 minutes to complete the survey. Your answers allow us to lobby for a bet-

ter operating environment for your business during the election and beyond. “Your opinion has never been more critical than now, and this is the most effective ten minutes you will have today.” The link to the survey can be found on the Cairns Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

JOBKEEPER provided by the Federal Government finishes at the end of this month. However, there will be an extension starting on 28 September through to 3 January next year. This will be followed by an extension which goes through until 28 March 21. The new rules are not complex but will eliminate a lot of businesses currently receiving JobKeeper. The general rule is that the actual turnover (including GST if applicable) for July to September 2020 compared to the previous July to September falls by 30% or more. The idea of JobKeeper is it is actually more beneficial for the Federal Government to pay this allowance to keep people employed so that they will be taxed and they will spend and possibly save.

With the JobKeeper money, people either spend 100 per cent or save a little (if possible). The same principle applies with the extension in the Jobseeker allowance. It is more beneficial for the whole economy if people are continually employed. The economy partially works on people having confidence in the State and Federal treasurers’ ability to manage the economy. This confidence at the moment is taking a battering obviously but Australia’s situation compared to other countries, is doing (relatively) fine. However, the best thing for people to do to keep the economy growing is to spend as this creates a multiplier effect that affects the entire local economy. Economists estimate that for every dollar you spend, it circulates in the economy approximately ten times.

Tropical Getaway Fur-ever Friends Pamper Package IT’S amazing what a difference a cat can make to a household. It’s comforting and calming to sit on the couch and have that faithful fur-ball jump up to recline on your lap, blissfully nodding off with that very reassuring purr.

Indulge your mind, body & soul Spoil Yourself You know you deserve it!

Some of my strongest childhood memories revolve around our pets, I am so glad I grew up in a family so attached to our animals.

Starting with a aromatherapy consultation Facial - body exfoliation & hydration & finished with a foot ritual Then relax afterwards while you experience the ambiance of the Coral Sea

Many of our pets came from rehoming organisations in Brisbane, including the RSPCA.

Allow yourself to be pampered whilst you enjoy a platter with champagne or herbal tea

Here in Cairns the RSPCA provide rehoming in addition to their animal rescue services. Currently the RSPCA in Aeroglen have two beautiful cats seeking a fur-ever home. Juniper is a sleek, good looking kitty that is prepped and ready go to my fabulous fur-ever home. He’s a pretty chilled out boy, but would love a family that he can have all to myself.

And then there’s Merlot, who was a bit nervous at first as she am still adjusting to shelter life. But once she starts trusting you, she will become a massive smooch and love bug. Merlot is a cheeky girl, a bit silly at times, but she loves the odd cat chat. You could compare her vocal MEOW, to ‘Patty and Selma Bouvier’. She put all the boys to shame with her deep voice. The cat adoption fee includes, desexing, microchip and health check and makes sure they are up to date with vaccinations, worming and flea treatment. If you would like to rehome a faithful and loyal fur-ever friend, visit the RSPCA website or call to their shelter at Arnold Street, Aeroglen.

MOTORING

Cairns Local News

SUPER SUV GRUNT

WHEN it arrived in Australia at the end of 2018, the Audi Q8 instantly struck a chord with customers and the Australian motoring press with its bold styling, spacious luxury interior and performance. Here was a large, luxury SUV that was effectively the SUV equivalent of the Audi A8 – a flagship, showcasing all that the brand had to offer.

and extraordinary levels of appointment.

ed door closure and metallic paint.

Priced at $165,500, plus dealer and government charges, the SQ8 TDI makes a powerful statement, with its tremendous road presence and no compromise appointment, technology and performance.

Performance and handling more than live up to strong design, with a twin turbo 4.0 TDI V8 engine, producing a stonking 320kW of power and an incredible 900Nm of torque from 1250rpm right through to 3250rpm.

Now, that compelling combination of absolute luxury, technology and appointment is combined with the famous Audi S performance, in a vehicle that adds a whole new dimension to the SUV ranks.

The distinctive styling of the original Q8 has been further enhanced with a strikingly sporty exterior design which includes S body styling (S front and rear bumpers, grille, side sills and rear tailgate spoiler), 22-inch alloy wheels.

Arriving in Australia in April, the Audi SQ8 TDI is one of the fastest performance SUVs on the market, boasting speed and agility that belies its physical size

Matrix LED headlights with dynamic rear indicators, rear brake callipers, adaptive air suspension sport, exterior mirrors in aluminium look, privacy glass, power assist-

Mated to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission with power down through all four wheels, this translates to a 0 to 100km/h time of just 4.8 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. Yet despite the incredible acceleration, the SQ8 is able to deliver fuel figures of 7.8L/100km and emissions of 205 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Friday, Sept 25, 2020

Acceleration and straightline speed are just the beginning in the SQ8, with all-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension and electromechanical active roll stabilisation all contributing to its razor-sharp handling. Drawing power from a 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system (MHEV) – which also powers a electric powered compressor (EPC) used to spool up the turbos – the SQ8 exhibits handling characteristics more common in a high-powered sportscar, sitting flat with nary a hint of body roll even on tight, twisting roads and high-speed bends. Inside its enormous interior are S sport front seats in Valcona leather upholstery complete with distinctive dia-

mond pattern stitching. The attention to detail throughout is nothing short of superb, with state-of-the-art technology seamlessly integrated into the interior. With four-zone climate control and ambient lighting package, the interior mood and environment can be fine tuned to suit every taste and situation, while the now familiar MMI touch response system with its dual screens provide easy operation of all on-board and vehicle systems with a simple touch – complete with satisfying acoustic and haptic feedback. Everything is of course within easy reach of the driver, who also controls the various systems via the leather multi-function flat-bottom

sports wheel or using the voice command system. The Audi virtual cockpit and Audi Smartphone Interface are standard equipment, while the Audi connect plus navigation provides a range of entertainment and information services through the high-speed internet access from the embedded SIM in the SQ8 TDI. This combination places the SQ8 in a unique position, boasting as it does, sportscar performance and handling in a large, luxury SUV that wants for absolutely nothing. One of the rare occasions it seems you actually can please all of the people, all of the time.

Creating a feeling The market is perfect for buyers of light and space in your bathroom and sellers

PETER MCCULLAGH

THE Cairns property market is looking great. Perfectly poised, an interesting mix of buyer market and a sellers paradise. Professionals Edge Hill Principal Billy Gartner believes the Cairns market is ideally positioned offering great returns to investors as well as value for sellers. “We are experiencing strong sales currently for sellers with good properties in addition to great rental returns for investors due to the tight rental market. “For first home buyers wanting to enter the market, now is the time to jump. There’s great properties in the low 300’s that will offer a strong rental return if they wanted to upgrade, plus for the straight investors there’s

very promising returns,” said Gartner.

Gartner celebrates over 33 years in the Cairns property market this year. “The Cairns market has matured in recent years. We have some sensational properties here, unbeatable lifestyle as well as great capital growth. “Cairns offers exceptional affordability when compared to similar centres throughout Australia. Very affordable properties combined with an exceptional lifestyle. Now is the time to jump into the market.” Billy believes his success in the market is a combination of several factors. “I listen to the vendor. It’s important to understand the full reason for their sale, their expectations and then plan a tailored strategy to meet their needs. “We also work with our vendors to help them maxim-

ise the potential of their property. Sometimes it is worth taking the time to fix a few points first before listing to help improve the sale-ability of their property.

“Our marketing strategies are tailored to the vendor’s needs and property potential. It’s not a matter of one size fits all, its more about what we need to do to get the best price.” “When you list with us, we will communicate with you as often as you require to ensure you are kept abreast with the progress on the sale of your property.” As the market continues to move in an upward direction, the Professionals Edge Hill have a need for greater number of listings. With a good number of buyers in the market combined with a tightening rental market, it will be a good time to enter as a buyer as well as a seller.

RESORT

THE bathroom and the kitchen are the two most renovated areas of any home, and can also be a deal breaker when it comes time to sell. So what can be done to help you brighten up you bathroom and make it zing? White is the new black. White makes the space look bigger. White will reflect light and brighten all corners. White will work better than a mirror, but combining white walls and vanity, tiles and bath along with a mirror will open up that bathroom and give it room. If your bathroom is internal and lacks natural lighting, use glass. Glass lets light through, allowing all areas to be lit. Use accessories in your bathroom made from clear acrylic. These do not

block lightr and also are less intrusive. Avoid solid vanity cupboards. Open vanities will work well. These will also challenge you to keep it tidy, something I struggle with.

Use plenty of mirrors. Mirrors reflect light and give depth to a small room. Mirrors do not need to be placed at eye height, you could use mirrors instead of tiling around the foot of your bath. This will create additional feelings of space as well as light.

emotion of the room.

Create atmosphere with small colour. Adding a small, strong-foliage indoor plant will add colour and not intrude. This splash will brighten and add an additional dimension to the small room. Use colour in your towels. Vibrant coloured towels will brighten and add a focal point to your bathroom. Towel storage can also be on-show, rolled neatly and stored under your open vanity.

Getting the lighting right is important. Have more than one light. Lights around your mirror, downlight above you or even drop pendant lighting will work well. But it’s important to have variation is lighting styles.

One of the best ways to gain ideas on bathrooms is to visit open homes. Look to see what others have done with their bathrooms. Be critical, look to see how bright and open it feels. Bathrooms traditionally are small spaces, so you need to work hard to make it work.

Consider the light globes you use, warm white or daylight, the colour of your globe with significantly change the

Live music springs back to life The Cairns live music and entertainment scene is back with a host of big names and bounty of local talent ready to fill the city’s most popular venues between now and Christmas. Securing support from State Government to re-energise the region’s live music, arts and entertainment industry, a program of quality entertainment is being rolled out by the crew at Tanks Arts Centre, Munro Martin Parklands and Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) in coming months. With tickets on sale now, “Sounds of AustraNesia” will headline the springtime bill with its inspirational, onenight-only show at Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) on Saturday October 17. Comprising Cairns’ finest Aboriginal, Torres Strait, Polynesian and Melanesian musical artists, Sounds of AustraNesia is destined

to envelop their audience in stories, songs and spirit. Sounds of AustraNesia’s Manager, Rubina Kimiia said it was a privilege to perform for an audience again. “Reviving our entertainment scene is fantastic, however you look at it; artists and audiences alike look to live shows to move and be moved, connect and be connected in a way that only an in-person experience can provide,” she said. “We’re excited to engage with our audience and to leave them better then when they came. That’s our role as artists. We’re tellers of stories, our own stories, and music happens to be our medium and unifier.” Also in coming weeks, Tanks Arts Centre will play host to rock-soul-god, Clint Boge of The Butterfly Effect on Friday October 2, and former Eurovision contestant, singer-songwriter Dami Im per-

forming her new single, Paper Dragon among other hits on Friday October 9. Then on October 24, the gates to Munro Martin Parklands reopen with ARIA award-winning ‘Washington’ illuminating the stage with songs from her long-awaited new album release, Batflowers. Understory Film Festival will round off the month of entertainment on Saturday November 7. While continuing to manage restricted numbers in venues for safe, social distancing, the Ticketlink message is ‘Buy Together to be Together’ to enable family and friend groups to enjoy live enter-

tainment in their own ‘social bubble’. Scheduled to go on sale in coming weeks at CPAC are three productions: Taboo by Paramour Cabaret Theatre; Laughing Heart Comedy, and Prospect Terrace, a funny, bitter and heart-warming new theatre production by Cairns playwright, Angela Murphy. Many of these events are going ahead thanks to funding received through Arts Queensland’s recovery package and will follow Queensland Government COVID Guidelines and the approved COVID Safe Industry Plan. History and spectacular views of Cooktown SURROUNDED by nature, with unspoilt, countryside on one side and the magestic Great Barrier Reef on the other, Cooktown is one of Queensland’s true hidden gems. The region is known for its diverse landscapes that are rich and alive with a variety of native flora and fauna. Many of Cooktown’s most spectacular natural environments, sweeping vistas, vantage points and views are all within an easy walking distance from the town centre and really are best discovered by foot. Showcasing a wide range of the region’s natural habitats, and unique flora and fauna, the Scenic Rim Walking Trail is made up of sev-

eral different hikes that can be done separately, or commenced at either end and completed together in a circuit over the course of a few good hours. Starting at the mangrove-lined banks of the beautiful Endeavour River, the trail meanders through the historic Cooktown Cemetery. Following an old railway line, this section of the trail features a saltwater lagoon surrounded by salt grasses and crab mounds. It leads past a histori Chinese Shrine to the main part of the cemetery where much of the local history, tragedies, triumphs and mysteries of Cooktown’s past lies buried. From

the

of

the Cemetery, the Scenic Rim Walking Trail ventures around the outskirts of Cooktown towards Mount Cook National Park. It then passes through open forest on the lower reaches of Mount Cook and upwards into lush rainforest to reach simply breathtaking views from the Mount Cook summit. This section of the trail is steep and narrow. Solid footwear is required and walkers should be reasonably fit – but

the view from the top is well and truly worth it. You will be pleased to have made the effort. From Mount Cook the trail winds back down the mountain to take in the picturesque, rocky headland between Finch Bay and Cherry Tree Bay that then transforms into the lush beauty and majesty of the Cooktown Botanic Gardens. Established in 1878, the Botanic Gardens are one of Queensland’s oldest region-

al botanic gardens housing five major plant collections, including a collection of species traditionally used by the local Aboriginal people; a rare and threatened plant showcase and a collection of some of the species collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1770. The gardens also feature a palmetum, a rainforest garden, a water lily pond and the Nature’s Powerhouse Café that, with its fresh, simple menu and tropical,

under-cover alfresco area, is without a doubt one, one of Cooktown’s best kept secrets. From the Botanic Gardens, the trail picks up again and weaves to the top of Grassy Hill where the magnificent 360-degree view over Cooktown – which, when timed to coincide with sunrise or sunset – makes it an ideal place to start or finish this spectacular hike.

Breaky by the beach PETER MCCULLAGH

BREAKFAST: Sauteed Spinach and Mushrooms with a poached egg

THERE’S something magical about Palm Cove. It reminds me of Noosa in the early 2010’s. Very hip, very laid back and coming of age in the food and café stakes. Leading the charge in quality relaxed café dining must be Espresso and Co Cafe. A real gem, with a menu and quality that you would expect to find in Noosa

now or even Manly in Sydney, but definitely without the southern price tag. David Calcagno – owner of Espresso and Co Cafe in Palm Cove believes their commitment to local quality ingredients, friendly service and great coffee, are key to their success. “We source our produce locally and selected nothing

“Our eggs are all freerange and local and where possible all our juices and smoothies use local fruits and feature 100% fruit,” said David.

Spinach and Mushrooms was my favourite especially with the poached egg and bacon on the side. There’s something magical about sitting outdoors on a beautiful morning and enjoying a freshly squeezed orange juice and watching Palm Cove come to life on a Sunday morning.

I must admit, the Sauteed

but the finest quality. Our bacon come from Marshes Butcher here in Cairns and is locally cured from meat raised on the Tablelands.

was also a popular choice at the table. The spicy tomato sauce with beans, a corn tortilla and two eggs. This was a feast and set the day off on the right foot. You feel part of the street but also removed back from the hustle, enjoying the characters of the town and the tourists as they go about their daily business. It certainly is

Coffee and sugar, the two basic food groups

WELCOME to the coffee culture. It appears there are more coffee styles than you can poke the proverbial stick at.

of approximately one ounce of highly concentrated coffee. A real coffee ‘hit’. I enjoy one in the evening after a meal with a splash of Sambuca.

Well in the next few paragraphs hopefully we can explain some of them, and we can all feel more comfortable when we visit that coffee shop with more varieties than an icecream parlour.

Obviously Double Espresso is just that. Twice the quantity of a single Espresso.

We can start at the most basic. The humble Espresso, also known as the short black. This coffee will consist

Overseas I’m greeted by an Americano. This is similar to the Long Black, that is added water to the short black to make a larger coffee served in a cup or mug. The Long Black. This is an Australian and New Zealand

creation. Similar to the Americano but with more crema on top. If you love your coffee black but need a hint of milk you would have a Macchiato. This is an Espresso with a small amount of milk, perhaps as little as two to four teaspoons of steamed milk to ‘whiten’ the coffee. Now for the classic favourite. The humble Cappuccino. A rich creamy coffee traditionally consumed in the morning in Italy. One or two shots of

coffee topped with steamed milk and a froth on top to add to the richness and flavour. This can an also be topped with sprinkled chocolate. If you’re not a froth and chocolate lover then the Flat White is the one for you. Similar to the Cappuccino, but no froth and chocolate. Wait, there’s still more. The Café Latte is next. Cafe lattes are considered to be an introductory coffee drink since the acidity and bitterness of coffee is cut by the amount

of milk in the beverage. Flavouring syrups are often added to the latte for those who enjoy sweeter drinks. And then we move to the Mocha. It’s a bitsa, a bit of coffee as well as a bit of hot chocolate. Rich and creamy and also sweeter. You can lash out and have an Affogato. This is a dessert coffee. Created by pouring a shot of coffee over a scoop of vanilla icecream. Definitely one for after a great meal and decadent, mixing two pleas-

ures, dessert and coffee. Now in my research I have found dozens of styles of coffee and I have not even considered what beans we use,and we have only listed a few here. Reach out to us here, you coffee-philes and let us know your favourite café or coffee style, you may even want to write a review of your favourite café. Email us on news@CairnsLocalNews.com.au

StarGuide AQUARIUS: Shrugging off your usual routine in an effort to hone your skillset and broaden your horizons could feel even more appealing than usual from September 22 to October 22 while the confident sun moves through your ninth house of higher education and adventure. Consider planning a short trip or downloading an app that will support your efforts to soak up knowledge. You’ll be rejuvenated by prioritizing your mental and spiritual growth.

GEMINI: Enjoying more pleasurable downtime with friends, loved ones, and someone special can come more naturally while the confident sun moves through your fifth house of romance and self-expression from September 22 to October 22. Don’t shy away from making your joy and relaxation a priority. Finding new ways to build self-care into your daily routine can be empowering and rejuvenating.

LIBRA: You’ll be feeling especially comfortable in your skin and fired up when it comes to pursuing your long-term dreams while the confident sun moves through your sign from September 22 to October 22. This is your season, Libra, so you have every right to take the bull by the horns and shine whenever possible. Meet with that higher-up or pitch that seemingly longshot client. You’ve got this!

PISCES: You might do well to hold your tongue or, at the very least, consider a far more diplomatic approach to communication on September 24 when messenger Mercury in your eighth house of emotional bonds and joint resources opposes go-getter Mars in your second house of income. That’s because money issues, especially those in which love ones are involved, could pave the way for a tense conflict. But striking a softer, more patient tone can help you keep the peace.

CANCER: While the confident sun moves through your fourth house of home life from September 22 to October 22, you’ll crave more quality time spent on domestic pleasures, like enjoying a beautiful meal, baking, gardening, perfecting the interior design of your space in a way that boosts a feeling of calm, fall cleaning, and getting ready for the holiday season. Enjoying time-honored traditions with loved ones can also warm your heart and bring unparalleled emotional fulfillment.

SCORPIO: It’s a sweet time to dream and feel productive while doing so as the confident sun moves through your twelfth house of spirituality from September 22 to October 22. What you meditate and muse on now could actually serve as a roadmap for fulfilling major goals down the road.

ARIES: You’ll be feeling especially self-assured when it comes to working on one-on-one projects and pursuing shared goals with a significant other, business partner, friend, or loved one while the confident sun moves through your seventh house of partnership from September 22 to October 22. Prioritizing collaboration and hearing one another out as you work through every step of the way can lead to success.

LEO: You’ll get a burst of self-assuredness around all those to-dos on your calendar and social plans you’ve been wanting to make while your ruler, the confident sun, moves through your third house of communication from September 22 to October 22. Asserting yourself is generally easy, but now, you’ll feel even more centered in the way you’re approaching these everyday interactions. It can be a fruitful time to brainstorm alongside colleagues or discuss a big picture pitch with friends.

SAGITTARIUS: You’ll be feeling positive, sensitive, and interested in having an eye-opening experience on September 22 when the emotional moon in your sign forms a harmonizing trine to social Venus in your ninth house of adventure. Sharing your needs with a significant other or loved one could help you land on the perfect game plan.

TAURUS: You should enjoy a burst of confidence around your daily routine and health goals while the self-image-conscious sun moves through your sixth house of wellness from September 22 to October 22. The key to making the most of this transit is striking a balance between the more aggressive pushes (like cardio, running, or following a super clean healthy eating plan) and caring for yourself mentally and emotionally (think therapy, sound baths, or meditation).

VIRGO: You’ll be extra empowered to go after professional opportunities that reflect your values and dreams while the self-image-oriented sun moves through your second house of income from September 22 to October 22. Putting yourself out there in a diplomatic but assertive way during this period could lead to concrete financial rewards.

CAPRICORN: Cultivating competence and self-assuredness on the job is your general M.O., but you’ll enjoy an extra burst of confidence around professional matters while the self-image-oriented sun moves through your tenth house of career from September 22 to October 22. Bringing a balanced, diplomatic, artistic viewpoint to the table can be a particularly smart way to appeal to higher-ups and end up earning their recognition, not to mention more responsibility and opportunity. Talk about a win.

King and Queen of the north

DAVE CAMERON This Saturday September 26, the Survivor Golf Series will see some of our region’s keenest amateur golfers tee off at the Atherton Golf Club for the finals of the King and Queen of the North Match Play Event. The semi-finals are scheduled to tee off from 6.44 am and the Men’s and Ladies finals are scheduled to tee off at 11.40am and 11.48am respectively. The Survivor Golf Series is all about giving amateur golfers the feeling of participating in a professional tournament. With the obstacles coronavirus has thrown community sports across the country, the Survivor Golf series this year pivoted from a traditional stroke play format with high energy crowds, to a handicapped match play event, seeing two players at a time go head-to-head with highlights broadcast online. The King and Queen of the North features equal prize money for men and women. Survivor Golf in partnership with Drummond Golf, will present the winners with a $1000 Drummond Golf gift voucher and second place will receive a $300 Drummond Golf gift voucher. After beginning the year with 32 men and 16 women participants, we are down to the final 8 players:

King of the North Semi Final 1 Liam Calvert Cairns Golf Club (Handicap 26) vs. Phil Hendricks Atherton Golf Club (HC 4) Semi Final 2 David Bawden Gordonvale Golf Club (HC 31) vs. Matt Veliki Half Moon Bay Golf Club (HC 3) Queen of the North Semi Final 1 Sam Duck Atherton Golf Club (HC 19) vs. Kayla Moss Cairns Golf Club (HC 18) Semi Final 2 Annabelle Hutchings Cairns Golf Club (HC1) vs. Beulah Merrick Half Moon Bay Golf Club (HC9) The home of this years final, Atherton Golf Club recently won the small golf club of the year award. The course is in great condition and the greens are superb. In addition to the finals playoff, there will be a putting tournament and a closest to the pin chipping competition with an opportunity to win great prizes! Survivor Golf would like to thank all participants and sponsors. We look forward to our exciting competitions planned for 2021, which are open to any players with an official handicap. Battling to keep season alive Round 11 starts this weekend for Footbal Queensland Far North. The Izmer Marine Premier men’s match of the round is Southside Comets v Stratford Dolphins. Finals football has come early for these two sides, as they head into the game knowing all too well only maximum points will be enough to keep their seasons alive. Both currently sit 5th and 6th respectively, with Comets four points off 4th place and the Dolphins a further two points adrift. With 3rd placed Mareeba having the bye and the 4th place Innisfail Cutters hosting the 2nd placed Lions the night before, both sides will know before kickoff how much there is to play for. Stratford will be looking for Kyle Nichol and Bronson Koppen to fire, with doubt over striker Joe Rusch who limped off against the Bulls clutching his hammy, while the homeside are coming off a strong 4-0 win with the young Comets side looking to finally hit their stride with key striker Zeca Soares finding his golden touch, but more importantly Billy Holiday keeping a clean sheet at the back. Sunday afternoon at Walker Road, Edmonton – Com-

ets V Dolphins – 5pm kick off The women’s competiton match of the round is Edge Hill Tigers v JCU Strikers. The last time these two sides met it was a end to end 5-4 thriller with the Edge Hill Tigers coming out winners in one of the most exciting matches of the season thus, fast forward from round 6 to round 12 and the Tigers are leading the comp by one solitary point, while the Strikers sit fourth, but a win on Saturday could swing the competition wide open with the Leichhardt Lions and Mareeba Bulls waiting in the wings. Edge Hill’s Olivia Gables has lit up the premier league of late while Strikers young gun Astia Neckebroeck is still leading the golden point race with 25 goals thus far this season. The battle in the middle of the park between Tigers’ Molloy Waddingham and Strikers’ Kelsey Grant will be one to watch out for and who ever comes out on top of this oneon-one contest could well go a long way in determining the result of this match and the outcome of the 2020 ladies premier league. CAIRNS Based ADF Cycling Team member Thomas Beddome stamped his dominance upon the LDI Cycling Criterium Series last weekend. Cairns Cycling commentator Alan Jones before the event felt that Beddome had the series stitched up. “All he has to do is stay on his bicycle to win it today, “quipped Jones. “Interesting Queensland Track Squad rider, Brandon Hutton is a champion sprinter, but with a little bit of ground, Thomas will make it hard for him.” The Men’s A Grade fin-

ished as Jones predicted. Thomas Beddome overall ahead of Brandon Hutton.

Scott took out the Boys Under 15 and Rone Thompson the Girls Under 15 division.

The Women’s A Grade is the race of the day. With a strong battle between Megan Pickford and Anita Narula. Pickford winning the series as predicted from Narula in second place.

Cairns Local News

Massive Lions fan YOUNG 14 year old Cairns boy Joshua Morris loves his AFL and his team is the Brisbane Lions. So when they came to town recently to play the Sydney Swans he was as excited as any other teenager would have been and just had to get to the game. The Lions have a very big following in the Far North, so getting tickets for the big game was always going to be a challenge. The Manunda Hawks junior president Jason Miller put out an SOS to anyone and everyone to try and find two tickets so Joshua and his sister Bec Kloft could attend the game. Now, young Joshua has Down Syndrome and earlier in the year asked his big sister Bec, who is his legal guardian, if he could play AFL. So she took him down to Cazalys Stadium to play with the Manunda Hawks and he has been hooked ever since. He is there every Saturday watching his sister play in the women’s team and then stays on to watch the men, before playing on the Sunday in the under 14 competition. Down Syndrome has always made it difficult for Joshua with regards to his balance but since starting AFL that has improved dramatically. “He has a disability, but he is not his disability,” is the way Bec describes the journey. “Since he started playing the game, his confi-

dence, balance and self esteem has improved massively.” “He just loves all sport, always watching the NRL & AFL on television.” Whenever there is a game of NRL on the television he barracks hard for either the Brisbane Broncos or Melbourne Storm but AFL is where his true passion lies. He’s not too bad at athletics either and has performed well in the state championships in the 100metre sprint, Shot Put, Javelin & Discus and was a baton bearer in the 2012 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. When I noticed there was a call out for tickets for him and Bec to get to the Brisbane v Sydney game, I just thought that in my role in the media I have to be able to help out in some way. Jason Miller had been successful in obtaining the two tickets through the Swans and it was all set, Joshua and Bec were going to the big game. I contacted the Brisbane Lions media manager to see if there was any chance that I could get a photo of Chris Fagan with the young man when I was down at the press conference. I knew this was always going to be difficult due to the Covid situation, but made the contact none the less. The media manager told me that he’d be happy to work that out if I could get clearance from the AFL. Unfortunately that clearance was never given, but I still asked Bec & Josh to meet me after the game and

POS TEAM

I would see if I could get Josh in to the area in the back of the room and he could at the very least see the coach talk at his aftermatch press conference. When we got to the front door of the press conference there were no security or AFL staff at the door to ask if this would be possible, so I just walked them in and asked them to sit at the back of the room which they did. Minutes later a security guard approached me and asked me if I had a media pass, which I had displayed around my neck and answered yes. He then asked, “what about these two,” and I then told him no they haven’t, I brought them through as there was no one on the door to ask and he said they would have to leave, which they duly did without question. Young Josh was visibly upset, but once his sister explained the situation, he was fine and was just so happy to be at the game and see his side have a great win.

There have been some people come out since with great exaggeration about the incident and that’s ok as I understand that makes some people relevant, but surely we don’t live in a world now that we can’t help or attempt to make a dream come true type of situation for a young, sports mad fan. I was subsequently banned, along with two colleagues, from entering the following weeks press conference after the Western Bulldogs v Fremantle game. One of those colleagues was not even at the previous weeks’ game due to covering the Gold Coast v Collingwood game in Brisbane. Would I attempt what I tried again? You bet I would! So in my role as the senior coach of the Manunda Hawks there is another way to achieve this. This Saturday, Josh will lead the senior team out in the game against North Cairns and he will accompany captain Elia Ware for the coin toss at the start of the game. In the event that the Hawks win, Josh will lead the boys in the aftermatch victory song. This game has the ability to create great moments, I can promise you this Josh, this moment will not be taken away from you!

Ninja gymnast PETER MCCULLAGH They swing, jump, hang, balance and defy gravity, they are the next generation of Australia’s Ninja Warrior, and they take no prisoners. Cairns’ next ninja is Faith Krall, 8 year old from Edmonton and she loves her Ninja Gym Classes. “It’s really cool, we can do heaps of really, really fun stuff,” said Faith.

Ninja Gym is a challenging, obstacle based gymnastics activity, perfect for children with loads of energy to burn. Lauren Mercer, South Cairns Gymnastics Club’s Recreational Coordinator believes that gymnastics and ninja gym can assist with a child’s development physically, socially and scholastically. “The kids develop valuable skills here in our classes. Not just physically, but they also learn social skills such as taking turns, interacting with

other children and coaches as well as developing critical skills such as following instructions, improving attention spans and also becoming more task driven. “All in all Ninja Gym is great for any child, it’s challenging, rewarding and definitely will challenge them and burn that excess energy,” said Mercer. Classes are held at their Bentley Park gym and full details are available on their website, www.gymsportsfnq. com.au
