Sea-rious fun at Seafest
Lifesavers on display SEVENTY years of Surf Life Saving in Far North Queensland will be celebrated at Cairns Museum this school holidays. The ‘Safe in the Water’ exhibition, which opened to the public on Monday September 21, explores the history, achievements and changing face of Surf Life Saving in the Far North. It is a collaboration between Surf Life Saving North Queensland and Cairns Museum, sponsored by Cairns Regional Council. The exhibition combines historic images, costumes and equipment with contemporary accounts of patrol, competition and community service, including the wearing of pantyhose by lifesavers before lycra became fashionable, and stories of lifesaver “guinea pigs” used in research into treatment of marine stings. Rachel Wynberg, president of Surf Life Saving North Queensland, said the branch was founded in 1950 to represent Cairns, Etty Bay and Mission Beach Surf Life Saving clubs. Queensland branch. Australia’s Surf Life Saving movement was founded in 1907 with its focus on patrol, rescue and resuscitation inspired by the British Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS). The RLSS brought the Bronze Medallion certification to Cairns and in 1917 local RLSS members began swimming lessons at Freshwater Creek. The Cairns branch began local beach patrols in 1924. Suzanne Gibson, manager of Cairns Museum, said the exhibition showcased stories and objects from the five local SLS clubs from Mission Beach to Port Douglas and explored how the Surf Life Saving movement had responded to the unique challenges of patrolling our tropical waters. These included the installation of watch towers, shark sirens and then shark nets in the early 1960s, and the trialling of lifesavers wearing pantyhose in the late 1970s as protection against marine stingers, The ‘Safe in the Water’ exhibition will be open this Saturday, and will run until the end of November.
