Noisy flying fox roost driving residents batty

l PORT DOUGLAS

WAYS to safely move a roost of flying foxes at Port Douglas are being investigated by the Douglas Shire Council.

The council is applying for state government funding to act on complaints about the roost as well as develop a long-term flying fox management plan for the region.

At least six residents of the Lakes Estate have complained to the council about the spectacled flying foxes on the western side of Old Port Road.

In a council report residents raised issues about the noise of the bats, the risk of disease from bat droppings, the expense of cleaning and running air conditioners 24/7 and the damage to their lifestyles.

“I can’t sleep because of the noise 24/7,” said one unnamed resident. The mess I have to clean daily. I have to lock myself in my home feeling like a prisoner, still I can hear them,” the resident said.

G’DAY Australia, a million-dollar tourism marketing event in Cairns later this year, is expected to kickstart the revival of the region’s international visitor market.

G’Day Australia involves bringing 300 specialist travel agents from the US and Canada, the UK, Europe (including Germany, France and Italy),

Asia (including China and Japan) and New Zealand for three days in October for training about the destination and to experience the tropical north and the Great Barrier Reef for themselves both before and after the event.

The event (previously known as ‘Corroboree’), which is a partnership between Tourism Australia, Tourism and Events Queensland and Tourism Tropical North Queensland Tourism, is being held for the first time in the city in 10 years and in Australia since 2019.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen said G’Day Australia was critical to revitalising the region’s lucrative international tourism market which was currently only worth 20 per cent in terms of volume and value.

“This will give it a massive boost … it will be worth millions of dollars in advertising value,” he said.

“It will be an enormous shot in the arm for international aviation recovery.”

“I can’t swim in my pool in fear of catching some horrendous disease. My outdoor furniture is ruined, everything is splattered with their mess. It is affecting my health, sending me mad.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said fixing the problem would protect the community and local flying fox populations.

“I have spoken to many residents who are worried about living so close to flying foxes and asked council to consider safely nudging them back into trees across the road,” he said.

Cr Kerr said he wanted to create a plan to protect both the bats and residents.

“Spectacled flying-foxes play a vital role in our eco-system and are efficient pollinators and seed dispersers of native trees,” he said.

“I would like to see this issue addressed in a sensitive and safe manner under supervision from a trained ecologist ...”

Reef water quality check

l CAIRNS | Nick Dalton FITZROY Island Resort guests are being offered a unique experience to help care for injured turtles as well as assisting with monitoring the Great Barrier Reef as part of a new citizen science program.

Resort chief executive Glen Macdonald said the launch of the Fitzroy Island Resort Marine Conservation Program coincided with the property’s recent Eco Certification with Ecotourism Australia.

“Fitzroy Island Resort master reef guide and marine biologist Azri Saparwan has created the program as part of the resort’s ongoing support for the two not-for-profit organisations that undertake conservation activities on Fitzroy Island,” he said.

“This full-day tour is the first opportunity for guests to go behind the scenes at the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre to help care for the sea turtles and to assist with the Reef Restoration Foundation’s coral restoration work.”

Mr Saparwan said guests would get involved by cutting up seafood to feed the turtles and cleaning the tanks at the centre.

“They will assist with the centre’s research into the local sea turtle population by identifying the turtles they see when they are snorkelling at the front of the resort in Welcome Bay,” he said.

“If someone discovers a new turtle they will have the honour of naming it.

“Participants will then be taught how to identify and remove the coraleating Drupella snail before snorkelling over the sites where the Reef Restoration Foundation has planted corals grown in Australia’s first offshore coral nursery at Fitzroy Island.

“They will also undertake an Eye on the Reef survey identifying the corals and marine life seen while snorkelling to inform the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.”

The Marine Conservation Program operates on Mondays from 9am to 4pm for 16 years and older. The $199 fee includes lunch, refreshments, snorkel gear and a donation to the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. The program is part of the Federal Government’s Tourism Industry Activation and Reef Protection initiative.

Children can do a half-day tour with a marine biologist through the junior marine biologist program. There are wet sessions on Sundays and dry sessions on Saturdays.

G’Day Australia event expected to drive tourism upwards

FROM PAGE 1

Mr Olsen said it was the first time G’Day Australia would involve all key international markets. Previously it had been split into east and west markets.

He said hosting the first Australia event in Cairns was recognition of the destination’s strong international appeal.

“In the past three years since international borders closed our region has invested significantly in new tourism infrastructure and refreshing our experiences to ensure they are world-class,” he said.

“This will be the first time the front-line travel agents who specialise in selling Australia have re-

turned to our country and they will be immersed in Tropical North Queensland for five days which is a great opportunity.” The agents, half of whom have never been to Australia, will receive training and be ‘sold to’ by up to 300 tourism representatives from the Far North and throughout the country.

Tourism Australia executive general manager Robin Mack said the agents were expected to sell more Australian and tropical north itineraries “more confidently” than before.

Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said G’day Australia was important for “Aussie

Specialists” agents, who were at the frontline actively selling Australia as a preferred long-haul destination and would be critical as the travel industry recovers from the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Senator Nita Green said the event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the region and to rebuild the destination on the world stage.

Cairns MP Michael Healy said the event would help bring back international tourists to the region faster and was fundamental to rebuilding the overseas tourism market.

He said it would be held in the $176 million redeveloped Cairns Convention Centre.

LEVI’S THRILLED TO BITS WITH NEW ‘PATSY’ HIGH CHAIR

THE treatment of young patients at Cairns Hospital will be made easier following the donation of two specialist high chairs and the refurbishment of another.

Cairns Men’s Shed gave the specialist equipment to the hospital’s paediatric unit to help young patients with complex needs.

The non-profit organisation built the two new “Patsy” high chairs for the ward, invaluable pieces of equipment that can be adjusted to offer positioning and postural support for babies and children with low muscle tone, development delays, or chronic health conditions.

The chairs, designed by former Cairns Hospital and Health Service allied health executive director Patsy Bjerregaard, have been well-known, used and loved by therapists and patients across the Far North for more than 30 years.

But there are few original chairs left, with most missing pieces or requiring repairs.

Cairns Hospital paediatric occupational therapist Holly Webster said the chairs would allow the ward’s youngest patients to sit safely to eat or play.

“These chairs are invaluable both on the ward and feeding clinic at Cairns Hospital and to have two chairs with all components will be an asset to the Cairns Hospital paediatric ward,” she said.

It was the idea of Mike Wraith of the men’s shed to handcraft the two new chairs and renovate a third. “Most of us are fathers. We realise the problems faced by some children who are sick and the parents who have to cope,” he said.

Big response to highway plan

l CAIRNS

| Nick Dalton

MORE than 2000 people have responded to calls to comment on the $359 million Captain Cook Highway upgrade between the Cairns CBD and Smithfield.

Consultation closed on February 28 with a Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman saying the process to comment on the preliminary masterplan was “well received”.

“Several community displays have been held across the region over two weeks, where we engaged with about 400 customers,” he said.

“As at February 27, we have received 100 contributions via our online consultation tool with 2167 individual votes on the contributions.

“The community feedback will be used to inform the planning for the project which is expected to be complete in late 2023.”

Key features highlighted in the preliminary planning include improvements to ease congestion and improve safety.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the master planning, including a staged approach for the upgrades, was expected to be finalised by mid to late 2023.

“Key features of preliminary plans

include improvements to ease congestion and improve safety,” he said.

“The $359 million Captain Cook Highway package is one of Far North Queensland’s most significant infrastructure projects, so it’s great to see we’ve taken another important step towards getting works underway.

Federal Transport Minister Catherine King said the preliminary master plan provided “long-term, multi-modal, transport planning for an efficient link between Cairns and the growing northern suburbs population”.

“Extensive consultation with impacted property owners and community engagement for the preliminary master plan along the 15.5-kilometre

corridor is underway,” she said.

“A detailed program of construction timeframes will be developed once the staging options have been identified.

“Like the staged approach to upgrade the Bruce Highway on Cairns Southern Access Corridor, implementation of the delivery of the Captain Cook Highway, Cairns CBD to Smithfield upgrade is proposed to occur over 25 years.”

Member for Cairns Michael Healysaid not only would the highway upgrades make it far quicker and safer to get around the Far North, they would also support over 380 jobs during construction.

“As part of the preliminary plan, Sheridan Street north of Grove Street will be expanded to six lanes, and intersections on the stretch will also be upgraded,” he said.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the upgrades, alongside other road projects like the recently completed $164 million Smithfield Bypass, would make it much easier to move around the Far North.

“They come as part of the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s almost $1.6 billion investment in road and transport projects in Far North Queensland over the next four years, supporting 1440 good, secure jobs in the region.”

Racing in memory of Mum LocalBriefs

THE Mitchell family of Mareeba lost their mother Wendy to pancreatic cancer in late January.

Now they are competing in the annual Wheelbarrow Race to raise funds for cancer patients in her honour.

Wendy Mitchell lost her life to terminal pancreatic cancer 12 years to the day after her first battle with cancer.

Determined to turn their pain into something fruitful, the family is raising funds for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation’s Cancer Care Hub.

The family set up a fundraising page through the foundation’s website that has raised over $8000 so far and will race at Mareeba’s 140km Great Wheelbarrow Race from May 12 to 14 to raise more funds.

Ms Mitchell’s daughter Nadine Cockrem said the family was proud to support others in overcoming the most challenging times.

“Twelve years ago, mum had throat cancer; mum and dad actually had to travel to Townsville to get treatment since Cairns didn’t have a cancer ward, and it really put a strain on our family,” Ms Cockrem said.

“When mum had cancer this time, we only found three weeks prior that she had pancreatic cancer, and her decline in health was too fast.

“We came to the Cancer Care Hub in Cairns, and the care that mum received was outstanding; it made a terrible situation more bearable.

“After mum’s passing, we phoned

the hospital, and we wanted to do the Wheelbarrow Race in her honour and to raise funds specifically for the Cancer Care Hub to help other families.

“We’re proud that we can raise money to help support other families that are experiencing cancer now or could experience it in the future.”

Dean Mitchell, Ms Mitchell’s husband, has raced the iconic Mareeba

Wheelbarrow Race eight times before. This time he’ll be running with his two sons, Brent and Dwayne, with a different purpose.

“I’ve done the race eight times and keep coming back,” Mr Mitchell said.

“Originally, we ran as a team called the Junction Jokers, which inspired the name for this team, Wendy’s Joker Joes.

“We aim to raise as much money as

possible; we’re not really interested in times; we’re just going to go out there and have some fun. Ms Cockrem said it was comforting to know they were doing something their mother would feel proud of. The Mitchell’s fundraiser could result in increased services and improved facilities for the foundation’s Cancer Care Hub. To help go to http://bit.ly/3T4o5Gg

l EASY CAR PARKING APP

MOTORISTS can now pay for the exact number of minutes they park in the CBD, straight from their phone. The EasyPark app will now be available for on-street parking throughout the city centre. Mayor Bob Manning said drivers using EasyPark started and ended their parking session on their phone, creating an exact payment, rather than guessing how long they might need and paying extra if they finish their lunch, shopping or business sooner than expected.

Health project starts soon

CONSTRUCTION of the first stage of the $60 million FNQ Health Innovation Project in Cairns is expected to start within three months.

A James Cook University spokesman said the first building would be the Cairns Tropical Enterprise Centre (CTEC) which was in the planning stages, with work to begin by July.

“CTEC is expected to be the first building in the FNQ Health Innovation Precinct, and is due for completion in 2024,” he said.

“It will be a multi-disciplinary centre of research and teaching, focussed on health and related areas.

“Specialists in data science and Internet of Things research, for example, will apply cutting-edge technology to the challenges facing health and medical professionals and their remote, rural and Indigenous patients.”

The building will be on land close to Cairns Hospital, previously part of the Cock and Bull pub, bounded by Grove, Digger, Charles and Sheridan streets.

“JCU is committed to partnering with the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) to develop the FNQ Health Innovation Precinct,” the spokesman said.

“The FNQ Health Innovation Precinct is an exciting and important project for Cairns and the Far North. It will address the pressing health needs of the Far Northern region by strengthening education, research and innovation,” he said.

“Thanks to $60m from the previous

Federal Government, JCU was able to secure the site for the precinct.

“Having transferred part-ownership of the site to Queensland Health, the university is now planning construction of its Cairns Tropical Enterprise Centre (CTEC).”

It comes as JCU’s ‘end-to-end’ medical program begins in Cairns, with 39 new students able for the first time to complete all of their medical training in Cairns.

JCU vice chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said before 2023, the first three

years of the six-year degree had to be completed outside of Cairns.

“JCU launched Australia’s first regionally-based medical program in 2000 that saw students complete the foundation years of the degree in Townsville, before having the option to move to Cairns or Mackay for their final years of study,” he said.

“The expansion to include the full program in Cairns is an important step forward in making medical education available locally, producing a medical workforce for regional, rural and remote communities.”

JCU College of medicine and dentistry dean Professor Richard Murray said the new program provided access to medical training for students from a diverse range of backgrounds and regions, including applicants who might had previously considered pursuing a medical career unattainable.

“One in three students in our new Cairns cohort is the first in their family to go to university and from a regional, rural or remote area.“Around two-thirds of this cohort are coming to us from outside a metropolitan area,” he said.

Ms Ormonde said there were also crab races, a wine and beer bar, an Easter bonnet parade and lots of activities to keep children busy.

“Cardwell Coast Guard will be manning the barbecue,” she said.

“As always we’ll have a great variety of quality stalls.”

“But Cardwell fills up quickly so be sure to book now to ensure you don’t miss out,” she said.

| Nick Dalton KEARLEY Dent, the owner of Cairns Floral Supplies, is the new president of the Cairns Businesswomen’s Club, replacing Krista Watkins at the recent annual meeting.

Ms Dent said she had been a club member for 10 years.

“I’ve also had the honour of being a corporate partner for the previous eight years and on the board for a little over two years,” she said.

“Taking on the position of president is not a decision I made lightly as it comes with great responsibility.

“I am very passionate about the club and thrilled to have the support of the community.”

The new board also includes vicepresident Kim Siegmann, vice-president and partnerships Sarah Debono, secretary Jenni Kingsbury, treasurer Paula Cotterill, and general board members Claire Howells (events), Megan Macallister (governance), Jodie Ferrero (marketing) and Mel

“The club has a solid financial standing with the figures improving on the previous year.

“We are grateful to be in this position and thank the previous board for all their hard work to place the club in this light,” Ms Dent said.

“The 2023 board intends to continue the great work of the previous board and work diligently with our members ensuring our values are always met,” she said.

“Last year a lot of time and energy was put into creating a strategic plan for the club and we will continue to action it.

“The club continues to support local women in the community. Recently, we presented a scholarship to a recipient at the Far North Queensland Youth Assistance Fund ceremony.”

Ms Dent said the club’s next event was for International Women’s Day on Friday, March 10, at the Hilton Hotel.

“It’s a day to celebrate women’s achievements and both highlight and work to address barriers that continue to perpetuate gender inequality. Every person attending

“We are delighted that AusMumpreneur co-founders Peace Mitchell and Katy Garner will be the guest speakers at the lunch.

“These ladies have an impressive list of achievements and haven’t let being from Innisfail stand in the way of creating successful businesses.

“Peace and Katy will be sharing the lessons they’ve learnt as women growing a global business from north Queensland.

“They are passionate about gender equality and supporting women and girls to reach their full potential and create the life they want to live.

“They have helped thousands of women across Australia and internationally achieve their dream of running a successful and profitable business.

Proud achievers honoured

Cairns women of year award winners come from all walks of life with inspirational stories to share

l CAIRNS

Gonzalez

SMALL business owner and mental health advocate Jo Piggott has received the 2023 Cairns Woman of the Year award for her work through the women’s support group Your Tribe Walk + Talk.

Ms Piggott was presented the award at the International Women’s Day event at the Pullman International Hotel on March 8.

Your Tribe was founded in 2019 to provide a safe space for women from all backgrounds to talk about everything. The group, which has surpassed 760 members, organises walks, hikes and workshops to connect and empower women.

Ms Piggott said the support of women had led her to win Cairns Woman of the Year.

“I feel humbled and very proud that I had women that stood beside me and helped me on this journey to create this supportive community,” she said.

“I was critically ill in 2018. Lots of women reached out to me while I was in hospital; once I was out, I wanted to give back to the community, so I started Your Tribe Walk + Talk, a free community initiative.

“When we started, there was just one walk a week, and now we’ve grown to 15 walks a week with 15 walk leaders; we also have dinners and discussions, lots of social connections and retreats.”

Mayoress Claire Manning, who presented the award, said Your Tribe had tremendously succeeded in bringing women together in an inclusive setting.

“Jo’s leadership skills have been instrumental to the success of Your Tribe,” Ms Manning said.

“As well as guiding the group herself, she has encouraged and empowered other women to lead walks, making the group remain relevant and sustainable.

“The group has now grown to more than 760 local women; a strong a, connected network that supports and encourages women to be their best selves.”

Ms Piggott said it was crucial to have safe spaces for women to be themselves and to communicate without judgment.

“I love watching the women grow; we all support

each other,” she said. “It’s so important to have a safe space, I didn’t realise when I started this how many people needed this, and that’s why the group keeps growing.

“It’s a private group on Facebook, so it’s always amazing to see how many people have reached out, and now we’ve rebranded with some teal shirts, so we’re getting a lot of women coming over and starting conversations.

“This is my passion; I love watching everybody connect.”

Passionate netballer Ashleigh Meikle, 17, received the 2023 Young Woman of the Year in recognition of her efforts on and off the court.

Ms Meikle said she did not expect to win the award.

“I honestly didn’t expect it; it’s mind-blowing,” she said. “Many young girls do so much for the community, so receiving this award feels surreal.”

The Cairns State High School student has represented Peninsula and Cairns at state competitions and has gone

into coaching, mentoring and umpiring. Ms Meikle was recognised by her club, the North Cairns Tigers, as Coach of the Year in 2022 after guiding the U14 team to finals.

“When I was younger, I had a lot of role models and coaches that I loved, and I wanted to be one of those coaches that kids look up to,” Ms Meikle said.

Cairns African Association president Anna Jones received the Recognition Award, worth $2000, for her advocacy and support of refugees and migrants in adapting to life in Cairns.

Ms Jones also founded the Maisha Bora Program in 2019, which helps migrants and refugees integrate into the community, linking them to services and encouraging them to take on volunteer and mentoring roles.

“I’m excited for this award because it shows we can recognise the women, the settled refugees, the migrants and my sisters from Africa,” she said.

THE Flame 2023: International Women’s Day Exhibition at the Tanks is a celebration of local talent resulting from a mentorship program for young female artists.

Mentor Keelie Nicholls said Flame was establishing a network of young female artists.

“Flame is a platform that gives young artists a chance to create a network within the art community, to exhibit their work professionally and to explore their arts practice freely,” Ms Nicholls said.

“The mentees have no set guidelines or rules; they’re given complete freedom to create however they want to create.”

Mali Smedts, 17, said Flame allowed her to explore her passion for fashion and costuming.

“For my work, I did two pieces; I made a dress and a print of it where I dressed up as this sort of character,” Ms Smedts said. The dress is based on the hickory horned caterpillar, which I was very inspired by the silhouette of it and wanted to translate that and create a character around the caterpillar,” she said.

G’DAY Tropicairnsians,

Most people are of the opinion that I am a six-pack short of a carton or as another vertically walking oxygen thief (sorry Bazza ... nah, I’m not) put it, I have a coupla Boomers loose in the top paddock.

Now I really resemble these remarks (whoops, I meant resent) as I had the highest grades ever recorded after my initial 10 years of year 1 at school. I bet not many Aussies can better that.

What brings on this rant is that for the first best part of 2023 celebrations is to be sure, to be sure, is March 17 being Saint Patrick’s Day for the 29 hour day of Guinness swilling, potato eating, and, for sure to be sure, with plenty of singing and jigging, and looking under all the four leaf clovers for that elusive pot of gold coins hidden by them wee little leprechauns.

Last year I had grand time getting a piggyback on a leprechaun who I trapped, but he would not reveal where the pot was, although we did end up being on Channel 7 news getting found at P J O’Brien’s swigging a Guinness early in the morning.

Now a 29-hour Saint Patrick’s Day may seem ordinary to your everyday Irishman, but to this 10th generation Aussie born from a convict Irish descendant it was tough.

Apparently a relative did a search on how we came to this great country and discovered how Irish we really are. This ancestor, upon hearing about the great adventure to be had, decided to steal a loaf of bread to guarantee his free passage to the new lands. The Irish humour

in this was that he was gluten intolerant so he could not even eat the bread he stole. All ends well though as he does his seven years and ends up with a large parcel of land in Victoria, met an Irish woman and they then bred like rabbits.

Sadly, this year I will have to refrain from drinking bucket loads of Guinness, but I will hopefully make up for it next year.

But the next great event second to that is the great celebration for the little ones known as Easter.

Now this year, one of my imaginary friends has made a grand suggestion, and I agree that this year the Easter Bunny should this year only, share the week and we should call it the

Banned drinkers register is tripe

THE recent intervention by Cairns Mayor Bob Manning and some councillors admitting that local government does have a shared responsibility and role in providing a safe and welcoming community for residents and visitors alike is long overdue.

That, however, is the end of the good news as the proposition that a banned drinkers register will do the trick is nonsense as alcohol is all too easy to obtain and plentiful and only addresses one part of the problem and lawlessness abounds elsewhere.

There are two issues to be addressed simultaneously. The first is the level and frequency of juvenile lawlessness occurring primarily in the inner suburbs, but now disturbingly ranging from the northern beaches to Gordonvale and beyond.

They need to be removed from our streets, backyards and homes to appropriately staffed and resourced state government diversionary facilities where a variety of interventions can be applied under approved programs so they might be rehabilitated.

The empty and desolate 16ha Alluna Hostel at Hartley Street, Portsmith, is ideally located for that purpose and with some ingenuity and vision could be repurposed to do the job.

The second issue is the one of inner city and public space lawlessness consisting of young roaming bands of miscreants, often drug and chroming affected, terrifying the living daylights out of CBD residents and visitors alike and the other are groups of often drunken itinerants who are afforded easy access to alcohol.

This is now spreading to the northern beaches and many of these displaced are from northern ATSI communities.

This issue requires the proactive involvement of the Cairns Regional Council by firstly deploying a bylaw banning the consumption of alcohol without a permit in all CRC controlled parks, footpaths and public spaces.

Kicking the can down the road

under the guise of a banned drinkers register fails us all.

Senator supports booze restrictions

I AM giving my full support to North Queensland Mayors calling for alcohol restrictions in an attempt to curb crime and violence.

Recent discussions with hoteliers and business owners had highlighted the need for urgent intervention.

Licensees in Townsville have reported a surge in anti-social behaviour since the Northern Territory imposed alcohol restrictions this month because people have been crossing the border into Queensland so they can buy alcohol with fewer restrictions.

Residents report seeing the same results from people living in ‘dry’ communities in Cape York making their way to Cairns and Townsville for health treatment and then staying, drinking and causing trouble.

It’s clear there needs to be a uniform system such as a banned drinker register.

These restrictions would allow police to clamp down on sly grogging, and also pointed to recent calls for juvenile criminals to be tested for Foetal Alcohol Syndrome as another reason to impose restrictions.

I will use my time in Canberra to seek more support from the Coalition and to meet relevant government ministers with a view to helping North Queenslanders escape the scourge of alcohol-fuelled crime and violence.

Tropical fundraiser to spice up town

TASTE buds are on red alert and mouths are watering as Mossman Support Services prepare to host their inaugural Multi-Cultural Feast Fundraiser.

This first event, to be held on Friday, March 31 at Mossman Support Services, promises to be full of spice with the theme of ‘Bollywood Nights’ set to offer a sumptuous feast for the eyes, ears and appetite.

The vibrant evening will bring a taste of India in more ways than just the amazing food, with belly dancers, henna artists, Bollywood music and backyard games, with guests being met with big colours and even bigger smiles.

One of the Douglas Shire’s local community heroes and renowned connoisseur of Indian cuisine, Sid Murthy, will no doubt be mixing up the chillies and turmeric, while cooking a delicious three course traditional Indian feast, presented in the rustic and popular community oriented setting of Mossman Support Services.

This treasured facility not only now has its own ‘resilience garden’ to grow many of the required food items, but also has superb kitchen facilities to present a top-notch menu worthy of any high class resort.

The intention of this fun night, and indeed future multicultural feasts, is to celebrate the diversity and rich tapestry of international cultures thriving in the Douglas Shire while raising funds for local community projects.

All proceeds from Bollywood Nights will go towards two beach and ocean access wheelchairs for the Douglas Shire. These

amazing devices not only allows easier access onto the beach but also, by the nature of their design, allow users to easily and safely enter the water itself. This, for some, may well be a first time opportunity.

As usual in the Douglas Shire, a host of incredible local sponsors have stepped up to the support the event, including Silky Oaks Lodge, Mossman Meat House and the Post Office Hotel.

As with the many activities at Mossman Support Services, the night is shaping up to be a fantastic time. Limited seats are available, which means tickets are already selling fast.

If you are interested, head straight to the Mossman Support Services Facebook Page and follow the Humanitix link. For any questions or to purchase your ticket in person, you can call Mossman Support Services on 4098 2836

Health and Wellbeing Get the most out of your massage

(BPT) - Massage therapy is known for its relaxing and restorative value, but did you know that it is also a powerful health-care tool for your body and mind? To get the most out of your next massage experience, follow these tips from Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, the leading association in the USA representing massage therapists and bodyworkers.

1. Set goals

What do you want to get out of your massage?

Do you have any injuries you’d like to target?

Are you holding tension in certain areas because of work or stress that you would like to address?

Or do you need some general hands-on therapy to help loosen up? What type of massage you’ll need will depend on your goals.

Before you head to your massage appointment, think about the reason for your massage. When you meet your massage therapist or bodywork professional, let them know your goals for the session so they can gauge how to properly address your needs.

2. Prepare your body

On the day of your appointment, make sure you’ve had a light snack beforehand, but nothing too heavy that might create discomfort while you’re on the massage table. Stay hydrated before and after your session, and avoid intoxicants or alcohol.

Massage is a physical activity, and it helps to prepare your body accordingly. Gentle stretches

before your session not only get your muscle tissue ready to receive bodywork, they help you detect areas that need additional attention and can help you feel more comfortable as you lay on the massage table.

3. Start the session relaxed

Before your massage starts, try and relax so you can be physically and mentally ready to receive the therapeutic benefits of a massage. One way to relax is by using breathing techniques. An easy technique to remember is Box Breathing - breathe in while counting to five, hold your breath for five counts, slowly exhale for five, hold again for five counts, then repeat. Try listening to relaxing music while breathing to promote relaxation as you prepare for your massage.

4. During the session: Communicate

By having clear and open communication between client and massage therapist, practitioners can create a successful therapeutic massage experience together. Don’t be shy to talk about your level of comfort with the massage table or face cradle, or the level of pressure the therapist is using, even the temperature of the room.

Just like going to your doctor, a massage is a form of health care administered by professionals and should be treated similarly to any other health care experience. For a session to be safe and effective, the practitioner must set clear boundaries and expectations and the client must understand what a therapeutic massage session does and does not

include. Open and clear communication is paramount to creating a successful therapeutic massage experience.

5. Post-session: Wind down

After a session, it’s important to let your body wind down and feel the effects of the massage. Here are some ways to wind down after a massage session:

• As you wind down, think about your goals and assess if it was a successful massage experience and what could be done to improve your

next session.

• Continue to replenish your body with healthy foods and plenty of water so you can feel your best.

Relax! Breathe, listen to music or do whatever you prefer to stay calm and let the effects of the massage settle in.

When administered by licensed professionals, massage therapy is a powerful form of health care that provides wellness, self-care, therapy, relief and comfort. Using these tips, you’ll set yourself up for a relaxing and productive session.

Feast of the Senses Celebrates 20 Years

IN 2023, Cassowary Coast is set to celebrate 20 years of its premier fruit festival, Feast of the Senses. From humble beginnings as a one-day event in 2003, the Feast has grown to be the biggest festival in the Cassowary Coast showcasing Queensland’s tropical fruits.

Through the festival’s growth, Cassowary Coast Regional Council has been a proud supporter and major sponsor of the event. In preparation for this year’s event, Feast of the Senses was a successful recipient of the Regional Arts Development Funding within Council’s Community Grant Program. The funding will support the Festival to activate

the River Stage during the festival and promote local musicians and artists who will be performing throughout the market day.

Feast of the Senses 2023 has an array of events over the four days, kicking off on Thursday 23 March, including festival river cruises, food trails, the Taste of the Tropics Dinner, a fun fancy-dress trivia night and a cooking workshop.

The festival attracts visitors from all over Queensland and interstate, with over 5000 patrons in attendance at Sunday’s Australian Bananas River Feast, where the Innisfail riverfront comes alive. Join in on the action on Sunday 26 March with stalls, entertain-

ment, river cruises, cooking demonstrations in Canecutter Court and the magnificent rare and tropical fruit display and tastings, with the fruit auction held later in the day.

”All of our ticketed events and stall bookings are now open. Check our website or Facebook for booking details. You can also put your name down to volunteer on the day.’ said President Rosi Jensen. Don’t miss on this event which captures the true essence of living in the tropics.

COUNCIL ENDORSES ORGANISATIONAL REDESIGN

AT the Local Government Meeting of 23 February 2023

Cassowary Coast Regional Council endorsed the new Organisational Structure.

Chief executive officer Andrew Graffen said it has been an extensive process over the past seven plus months to get to this point and there is still a lot of work to be done.

“I would like to commend and thank the entire Council team for the level of engagement and honest feedback we received throughout this process,” said Mr Graffen.

“I am extremely appreciative and proud of our team. We are all focused on delivering for the Cassowary Coast community and making our region the best place to live, work, play and invest.

“The organisational redesign is very much focused on delivering for our community, and the final outcome is a direct response to the Community Scorecard 2022 outcomes.

“The restructure will set the business of Council up for success with a real focus on ‘growing our own’ through increased internal delivery of services rather than engaging consultancies as just one example of structural improvements.

“For example, we currently have an over-reliance on external contractors and consultancies within delivery teams. Through this restructure, we aim to attract the right expertise which will ultimately have cost savings and a reduction in the level of risk that an over-reliance on consultancies brings with it.

“With ongoing consultation within Council’s teams, the new structure encompasses realignment of positions, directorates and teams and the implementation of a stand-alone business unit for delivery of Commercial Services including water and wastewater, waste and resource

recovery,” said Mr Graffen.

Mayor Mark Nolan said that the Commercial Services unit will operate in accordance with legislative requirements and will be underpinned by a value-formoney user-pays model to reduce the financial impost on our broader ratepayer base.

“The uniqueness of our location with two World Heritage Areas provides us with an enhanced quality of life and emergent opportunities that we can leverage, but also a responsibility to consider this unique environment in everything we do.

“The implementation of the organisational redesign, which also includes longterm Workforce Planning, provides the right environment for implementation of best practice systems and continual improvement focus within all service delivery areas.

“Our Council has listened to our community and the

new organisation structure will provide a fit-for-purpose structure firmly aimed on delivering our community’s priorities as articulated

through the 2022 Community Scorecard,” said Mayor Nolan.

As Council enters the implementation phase,

we will continue to fully engage with employees and relevant Unions throughout the organisation redesign process.

HORSES ON BEACHES

CASSOWARY Coast Regional Council (CCRC) is seeking 12 local community members to form part of the Rating Advisory Committee which will provide feedback and recommendations on Council’s General Rates and Special Levies structure in advance of developing the 2024/25 Annual Budget.

Advisory Committee members will be appointed by Council following a review of applicants’ suitability, including an assess-

ment to determine whether a representative sample of the CCRC community has been achieved.

Preference will be given to those residents who represent local organisations/interest/ community groups and whose skills and experience will, in Council’s opinion, most ably assist the objectives of the Committee.

RECENTLY, concerns have been raised with regard to interactions between horses and users on beaches and foreshores across the Cassowary Coast. Council would like to remind residents and visitors that following community consultation and adopted the new local laws, which have been in effect since October 2022, that that the riding or taking of horses on all beaches and foreshores across the Cassowary Coast is prohibited, unless signed.

Subordinate Local Law No. 4 (Local Government Controlled Areas & Roads) 2022, Schedule 2 (10)(10) states that in all reserves it is prohibited to take or bring an

animal unless otherwise permitted by official sign.

Horse riding on the beach and foreshore may be considered as part of future planning, however at this stage, this activity remains prohibited. Community consultation will be undertaken as part of future planning.

Council has a number of local laws that apply across the region. For details on local laws, please visit:

Council sincerely thanks community members for their adherence to the Local Laws as applicable.

roads with over 400 tonnes of asphalt. Council thank the Port Hinchinbrook community for their patience whilst we completed this work.

With dry weather forecast for the next few days, works should be completed by the weekend.

Council launches rating advisory committee

CASSOWARY Coast

Regional Council is seeking expressions of interest from the community to be a part of its Rating Advisory Committee to inform the development of the 2024/2025 Annual Budget.

The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to create an opportunity for our community to review and provide feedback and recommendations on Council’s General Rates and Special Levies structure.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, Mark Nolan said Advisory Committees are an important part

of Council’s commitment to community engagement.

“The Advisory Committee will provide a platform for the community to participate in the 2024/2025 Annual Budget process and contribute meaningfully in the decision-making process.

“Members will represent a range of local organisations, sectors and community groups with various interests and will bring their local knowledge, expertise and critical thinking to the table. Members will also share their opinions and perspectives, study issues, and provide judicious advice from

the community to Council”.

“The process of establishing the Advisory Committee will be similar to the 2016 Rating Reference Group which was regarded as highly successful with Council having gained valuable insights into community expectations and ideas on its general rating structures at that time”.

“I look forward to the establishment of the Committee and the recommendations they provide,” said Mayor Nolan.

Expressions of interest will be open from Monday March 6, to Monday 10 April 2023.

Beach Furniture Clean Up Wongaling Beach

TOO often we take our World Heritage environment, oceans, and beaches for granted. For many of us, the beach is our happy place, a place we can turn to whenever we need it. It’s a slice of paradise right on our doorstep.

Council has established the clean up program to clear unapproved structures, items and debris that is left behind, and ask residents to leave only footprints when visiting our beaches and foreshores. The program commenced in Wongaling Beach and other

beaches across the Cassowary Coast will be provided advance notice as the program progresses throughout the region.

Council’s Local Law Officers recently identified unapproved structures and items left behind across Wongaling Beach and provided owners with 14 days to remove the items. Notification was in the form of placing a notice sticker on the item.

After the 14 day period, if the item has not been removed, Council will collect the item. Items will be taken

to a Council Depot and held for 30 days. If the item is not collected by the owner, at the end of this period, it will then be disposed of, auctioned or donated to a local charity.

Items that are held by Council will be subject to holding fees, which will be required to be paid before the item is released to the owner. The holding fee is $63 per item.

Phase two of the program, which includes collection of the left behind items, will commence in early March.

A new look for Tully Library

ARE libraries quiet places for the lending of books? Well...sometimes! Modern libraries are evolving into open, busy, thriving spaces where in this digital age you can still experience the human. If someone wants to come in, do a jigsaw, read the paper or just sit and enjoy the air-conditioning that is fine – we are many things for many people! As Skye Patrick, director of the Los Angeles County Library system said, “Libraries are not about books they’re about people.”

Tully Library is a busy place with an average door count of 2830 per month. People come in for many reasons: from free use of computers and WIFI to scheduled activities such as Tech-Help, Lego Club, Scrabble, Mah Jong, Junior Steamers and Children’s Morning.

Saturday mornings are also busy with many families using the space to spend quality time together. During school holidays there are different programs and Makerspace, Lego and Jigsaws are always available.

In response to the changing needs within our community, the Tully Library team has completely revamped the layout of the Library. Cleverly using existing furniture and shelving to re-create the space, there is now a much larger and vibrant Children’s Area, a dedicated Youth Area, a beautiful sunny Reading Room and many more spots to study, do jigsaw puzzles or simply relax and enjoy the ambience.

“Since we finished this work, we’ve had nothing but positive responses from the public!”

“Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities.” - R. David Lankes

To celebrate the revamped space, several activities are on offer throughout the week of Monday 13 to Saturday 18 March:

• Monday 10.30-11.30am: Tech Help Sessions

• Monday 3.30-4.30pm: Lego Club

• Tuesday 9.30am-12 midday: Scrabble Morning Wednesday 9.30-12 midday: Mah-Jong Morning

• Wednesday 3.30-4.30pm: Junior STEAMers

• Thursday 10am-12 midday: Children’s Morning

• Friday 10-11am Guided Silent Meditation (Bookings Required)

• Saturday 10am: Celebration Open-Day - Morning Tea & Library Tours

Please join us for the Celebrations – we’d love to see you. To register for any event, go to Cassowary Coast Libraries’ website, call us on 1300 366 616 or see a staff member at any of our four branches.

TimeOut St Paddy’s Day to be a ‘craicer’

ALL things Celtic are celebrated at the Reef Hotel Casino to mark St Patrick’s Day next week.

Starting on Friday, March 17 (St Patrick’s Day) will be an enviable line-up featuring multi-talented Irish/Aussie singer songwriter, Damien Leith, plus Melbourne Celtic rockers Claymore, special guests City of Cairns Irish Highland Dancers, Indie Irish duo and The Cane Fires.

Local Irish hero Mick O’Mara with his acoustic four-piece Shehade will

also ensure it is a ‘craicing’ weekend.

Returning is Damien Leith, a multitalented artist who has made his mark in Australia s a singer/ songwriter, selling over 700,000 albums.

He is also a producer, author, playwright and TV/radio host personality.

Leith first captured the attention and affection of Australians, when he contested the 2006 edition of Australian Idol – a series he went on to win.

Casino entertainment manager

Bruce Stewart said since then his career had skyrocketed, but he had remained “charming, grounded and modest – securing him a place as a popular and well-loved Australian personality”.

“Damien will present traditional tunes, contemporary Celtic, his originals … maybe even a little Roy Orbison,” he said.

“Melbourne Celtic rockers Claymore will take to the stage for three nights for a rockin’ loud evening of entertainment.

“Internationally considered one of the world’s premier Celtic rock bands, an evening in the company of Claymore always demands audiences to be on their feet from the onset.

“Forget everything you’ve ever thought you knew about Celtic rock bands, because Claymore, defies all expectations.”

Mr Stewart said adding to the weekend’s line up, is new to the scene, Trad duo The Cane Fires featuring Tully Connors and Rob Howe with their cool modern twist of the Celtic genre.

“Everything sounds Celtic when you add a tenor banjo. Cool classics and originals,” he said.

“The perennial Shehade acoustic four-piece will deliver more traditional tunes and cool classics in the casino and BAR36 throughout the weekend.

“Featuring Mick O’Mara and Peter Ella, Shehade are to be sure to get the toes tapping and the hands clapping.

“The highlight for the weekend will be special guests, the City of Cairns

Irish Highland Dancers, presenting their high impact energized dance shows, both Irish Highland. Dancers from the City of Cairns Highland and Irish Dancers have joined the internationally acclaimed OzScot Australia Highland Dancing Team. OzScot has performed all over the world including Scotland, Oman, the US, Switzerland, Holland and Nova Scotia.

The live music starts from 2.30pm in the casino and into the evening in BAR36 on March 17 and 18 and from 4pm on Sunday at BAR36. Tickets are not required. For the full schedule visit www.reefcasino.com.au.

TimeOut Talented duo’s one-off concert

GIFTED writer, performer and entertainer and successful independent artists Lior is teaming up with exciting and new emerging talent Domini Forster for a one-off performance in Cairns next week.

Lior, renowned for his beautiful voice and songs that radiate truth and sincerity, burst onto the Australian music scene in 2005 with his debut album Autumn Flow which has become one of the most successful independent debut releases in Australian music history.

Initially Domini toured as Lior’s support act, then as a guest vocalist and now as co-writer on their debut EP, Animal in Hiding.

Animal in Hiding features songs that are rooted in intimate storytelling. Underpinned by intricate guitar, Lior and Domini’s close vocal harmonies are the focal point of the songs, harking back to the iconic folk duos of the 60s.

Animal in Hiding is the first release from a collaboration between the pair who have developed a creative partnership over six years touring together.

While Lior and Domini began writing the songs in late 2019, much of the material was developed during Melbourne’s long lockdown, over zoom from their respective homes.

“In singing together, Domini and I discover a pair who can weave in and out of each other’s shadow,” Lior said.

“Somehow, we sense one another’s vocal nu-

ances in real time. It is a rare musical synergy, one we felt compelled to capture in a collaborative project.”

Domini said singing with Lior was a pleasure.

“We have a real kinship as singers. There’s something special in the blend of our voices that we both immediately recognised.

“And as we’ve sung more together over the years, we’ve gotten to know each other’s intuition and style, so we can match our phrasing and expression very closely.

“Honestly, I think a big part of why we started this collaboration was just so we could sing together more. There’s also something really wonderful and freeing about working with someone who cares just as much as you do.’

Domini said she was in high school when Autumn Flow came out, so the songs were a part of her formative years.

“I very clearly remember This Old Love becoming a fixture of my year 12 common room.

“So it’s fair to say I was pretty excited when I got the chance to play violin in a student string section with Lior for a guest spot he did at my uni’s songwriting competition.

“I was also competing as a songwriter and ended up winning the comp.

“More significantly though, Lior saw my performance and asked me to support him for a couple of shows.”

“It felt so wonderful to have my work valued by such an accomplished artist, and one that I really admire.”

The one-off show is at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on Friday, March 17 at 8pm.

Motoring BMW V8 SUVs all revved up

l CAIRNS

A PAIR of high-performance luxury BMW SUVs duo are on their way to Australia and Cairns.

BMW’s updated potent X5 and X6 M Competition performance SUVs have some serious grunt and price tags.

The range-topping SUVs bring a host of upgrades including more standard equipment, revised looks and mild hybrid power, which is a first for an M vehicle.

Customers can expect the first deliveries from July this year.

The X6 has a coupe-style roofline compared to the X5’s conventional SUV shape.

But prices have risen by $14,000 compared to the outgoing model to $241,900 (before on-road costs) for the X5 and $247,900 for the X6.

However, the expensive price tags provide some serious performance.

Under the bonnet is a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine producing 460kW and 750Nm. It is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The 100km/h speed limit comes up from standstill in 3.9 seconds.

The 48-volt mild hybrid tech acts as a starter generator to help lower fuel use and chips in extra grunt for small periods.

Both models come standard with adaptive suspension, which allows users to select driving modes that alter the car’s suspension firmness,

exhaust note and steering response among other features.

This allows the vehicle to be more comfortable around town and ferocious when required.

There are 21-inch alloy wheels up front and 22inch at the rear as standard. Sharper looking LED headlights and an all-black grille add to the visual appeal.

A head-up display projects vital information such as travelling and current speed limit onto the windscreen.

At the heart of the design updates for the interior is the curved display, which gives the M-typical cockpit a modern and exclusive feel.

It is formed by a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches, with a single glass surface incorporating both.

The control display’s touchscreen enables digital control of numerous functions, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls.

Other new features include the broad interior trim strip in Fineline Black fine wood with highgloss metal effect, the ambient light bar with effective backlighting and the addition of an M logo to its graphic, plus the M leather steering wheel with its new carbon gearshift paddles.

Also to be found on the standard equipment list are M multifunction seats, knee pads, fine-grain Merino full leather trim and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System.

Badminton players aim to socially please everybody

l CAIRNS

| Isabella

SINCE the 1970s, the Cairns Badminton Association has been training local badminton enthusiasts and creating an inviting space for those who are into the game, not the competition.

Cairns Badminton Association president John Spannenburg said the club focused on the game’s social aspect more than the official competitions.

“We don’t have a season; we play all year round; we don’t stop for anything, including Christmas Day,” Mr Spannenburg said.

“We don’t engage in any competitions per se; occasionally, the Townsville Badminton Club may have a competition that some players attend, but we don’t have an official competition ourselves.

“The games are competitive, and people are playing to win, but it’s not about organised competitions; it’s a social club.”

Cairns Badminton holds social games on Tuesday and Friday nights and Sunday mornings at the Cairns Youth and Recreation Centre, with about 40-50 regular players attending.

Members book online on a session-tosession basis of $10 per adult and $7 for U16s.

With each session, Cairns Badminton offers its members free racket loans and shut-

tle services; no prerequisites, no age limits, and no experience are needed.

“We’ve got a website where you can go and register so we have your details; that’s part of our COVID protocol, so if someone gets sick, we can let everyone know,” Mr Spannenburg said.

“Anyone can register and make bookings online, and you can come to play.

“Every session, we have someone learning, we have players of every ability, and we certainly get new players who haven’t played before.

“As one of the less cool average players, I take my time if there’s someone new to play at least one game with them and give them some starters and tips and try to lift them up.

“One of our best players started when he was 12 years old, and he’d never picked up a racket; he’s 21 now and one of the best players; it does happen.

“And it’s an all-ages sport; we’ve got players certainly into their 70s, and the youngest player is 10,” he said.

Mr Spannenburg said that although member numbers had been very stable in the last five years, they always required the community’s support to survive.

“We run as a not-for-profit, so we need enough players to cover the hire of the hall; that’s our primary need, to be self-sufficient,” he said.

“We either break even or are close enough, and we adjust our fees to suit.

“Our sessions last three hours on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm to 10.30pm and two hours on Sundays from 10am to 12pm, and our fees cover as many games as you can play on that time.

“The club supplies shuttles to keep people coming, and we loan rackets, although most players bring their own.

“This year, we want to keep enough people not to lose any money and have a good time.”

Mr Spannenburg encouraged people who enjoy playing sports without the pressure of competition to join Cairns Badminton.

“Badminton is great for fitness,” Mr Spannenburg said.

“They say that racket sports are best for your longevity, and badminton is one of them.

“It gives you exercise without the utter boredom of running down a road, you’re exercising, and you’re genuinely having fun while doing it.

“I used to play squash, but it was so serious and competitive that I had enough.

“We’re not so serious, we’re competitive during the game, but we don’t have any organised competitions, no umpire, just good fun.”

KEWARRA Beach resident Cody Williamson has become Cairns’ most promising triathlon figure after taking his first win at the Busselton 70.3 Ironman in 2022 and qualifying for the 2023 Ironman world championship.

Williamson (right) took first place at the Busselton Ironman in the 18-24 age group and finished 15 overall, immediately qualifying for 2023 70.3 Ironman World Championship in Finland on August 26-27.

Williamson, 24, discovered his passion for triathlon in 2021 and has steadily progressed in the sport.

“I grew up in Cairns, and my mum does the run leg of the Cairns Ironman every year,” he said.

“I’ve always been into fitness and sport, so she said I should give Ironman a crack.

“Around November 2021, I started training for Cairns Ironman 2022, the half distance, and that’s how I came to it.”

Williamson trained himself, but after his first Ironman and wanting to pursue triathlon more seriously, he joined the local triathlon club, TriMotivate, where he received professional training.

At his second Ironman ever at Busselton, Williamson would win first place in the 18-24 age group and take 15th place overall, competing against professional triathletes.

“I love marginally getting better and better each time, and I feel that triathlon is the perfect sport for that; you go day in and day out in three different sports, and you get a little bit fitter every day,” he said.

“For my first Ironman, I was doing as much time swimming, riding and running as much as I could; there was no structure or guidance, just hoping that I was good enough.

“Having TriMotivate’s guidance was crucial not just to get fitter but to improve my technique and form and get better at the sport instead of just getting fitter.”

TriMotivate coach Renee

Kerr said Williamson’s race was extraordinary.

“His race was so exciting to watch,” Ms Kerr said.

“I knew he was likely to get a podium place, but he blew us all away by holding a 4 min – 4.10 pace for 21km after a tough 90km ride and taking the win.

“He finished in under 4 hours 30 minutes, and for a 70.3, that’s an outstanding result for anyone, let alone his second ever 70.3 Ironman.”

Reflecting on his win, Williamson said he could not have predicted his result.

“After I started training with TriMotivate, I started to get noticeably quicker in all disciplines,” he said.

“You can never predict what will happen on race day, and for me, it all pieced together really nicely.

“I had a good swim and a reasonably fast bike ride, and I had enough gas in the tank to bring it home in the run.

“I didn’t know I’d won until I was in the recovery zone and my mum told me; I was surprised because I didn’t go in with any expectations to win it, and to hear it was really exciting.

“That moment really opened my eyes to all the possibilities in this sport if I put my all into it, and since then, this sport has had my total focus.”

After the big win, Williamson is now preparing and counting down the days before his world debut in Finland this August.

He took a break of two to three weeks to physically and mentally recharge.
