Troublesome Times Bring Much Needed Relief from Construction Equipment Manufacturers As of the writing of this letter, there have been 37,369 recorded cases of COVID-19 in California. This disease, also known as the coronavirus, has managed to not only take precious lives but has also shut down much of the California economy. Although the civil general engineering construction economy has managed to keep going as an essential business, it has nonetheless been negatively affected.

As our state begins to enter into the first phase of reopening the economy, there remain certain regions that are more negatively affected than others, like the San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles areas. As of April 1, the city of Los Angeles allows “any work necessary to build, operate, maintain or manufacture essential infrastructure, including without limitation construction of commercial, office and institutional building, residential buildings and housing” in its stay-at-home order. As a writer of civil engineering construction stories, I have heard from contractors and equipment distributors alike, each with unique and different experiences. The deciding factors seem to be based on where the project is located, what orders have been issued in that area, and the exact nature of the project in question. The good news overall is that after several weeks of quarantine, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Although standard operating procedures in construction may never be quite the same, it is clear that contractors will keep right on working and prospering in the great state of California. Much of the credit goes to those that have worked together, unselfishly, to help bend the viral curve to the point where we can all get back work safely. It is important to note that the heavy construction manufactures and distributors have also done their part in making this catastrophe a bit more endurable by creating programs to help their customers remain active and profitable. This is being accomplished through a variety of efforts, including 0%, no money down financing programs that defer payments up to 120 days. Equipment dealers have also come up with innovative programs where parts are safely delivered without the contractor even having to leave their truck and conducting their emergency and necessary service calls while practicing safe distancing practices and protocols. Banks and other lending institutions are also providing programs where current payments can be deferred while also offering loan consolidation programs. 2020 is our 20th edition of the CalContractor Equipment Guide, and we want to take a moment to thank everyone in our great industry. onstruction equipment downtime can sometimes make the difference between profit and loss to many contractors who are consistently working on projects with tight margins and strict deadlines. One way that our industry is mitigating equipment downtime losses is through telematic systems. Telematics is essentially an electronic device unit attached to a machine that offers real-time access for troubleshooting and management purposes. These systems utilize GPS technology, monitoring sensors, and onboard diagnostic devices to track, log, and report data through cellular phone networks. This technology can track engine hours, monitor fuel consumption and idle times, as well as 24

provide alerts and fault codes to equipment managers when a component or system has or is about to fail. It all began as a simple GPS based system to help in the prevention of theft by monitoring the location of a vehicle or piece of equipment. Today, these onboard telematics have remote connectivity that has revolutionized the monitoring of machine health with weekly reports that are proven to reduce downtime. Remote analysis through telematics has never been more critical, especially in the age of viruses and other disasters that promote and implement social distancing practices. Several construction equipment manufacturers now offer machine telematics and are

installing the service as standard equipment on many of their equipment line offerings. Volvo ActiveCare Direct Telematics Volvo Construction Equipment’s, ActiveCare Direct Telematics is a revolutionary new monitoring, and fleet utilization reporting service offered directly from Volvo. By using CareTrack®, the Volvo telematics system captures thousands of data points that are sent to the Volvo Uptime Center in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. It is here that a team of data analysts use their proprietary system monitors to analyze a customer’s machine health in real-time. C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

In California, Jason Pellegrino serves as Volvo Construction Equipment and Services (VCES) product support manager. This position includes overseeing all aspects of the ActiveCare Direct program, as well as supervising all of the VCES product support representatives. Jason services cases daily, and his ActiveCare Direct Telematics support staff is extremely knowledgeable and fully trained in the servicing of Volvo equipment and the ActiveCare system. Pellegrino is uniquely qualified to head up and oversee the ActiveCare Direct Telematics program, as he has been working for the company in a service capacity since 2002. “I started with Ingersoll-Rand in 2002 and remained on after Volvo purchased the company,” says Pellegrino. “I started as a shop technician in San Diego, before working my way into a service truck and working as a field service technician for many years.” Pellegrino became the connective services manager in 2018 and was promoted to product support manager 363 days later in 2019. His hands-on experience with the entire Volvo product line makes Pellegrino the perfect candidate for the job. “I have certainly checked all of the boxes over the years and have enjoyed building upon so many genuine relationships with customers during my time at Volvo,” continues Pellegrino. “I still have a lot to learn, but I enjoy the process and am proud to say that every one of our support staff is equally eager.” Let’s Talk About What ActiveCare Direct Telematics Offers The Volvo ActiveCare is an intelligent telematics service that bundles together the monitoring of machine health and the provision of weekly reports that together help reduce unnecessary cost and downtime. “ActiveCare is free for one year with the purchase of a Volvo machine. This includes both the monitoring and reporting services,” says Pellegrino. “After the first 12 months, the monitoring service is offered at the nominal fee of $250 per machine each year. With full reporting services, the price per unit goes to $400 a year.” Pellegrino explains that they offer two levels of service, and he emphasized the tremendous benefits of having both monitoring and reporting on every machine. “Our monitoring service kicks into gear when an error code is generated, and you are going to get a phone call from one of our support representatives. They will walk the customer through the issue and what service or part they may need to remedy the situation,” says Pellegrino. “The conventional way would have been to send out a technician on a service call. We have an hourly rate, and a service charge, and these fees can many times amount to $1,000 or more. The first thing the service tech will do out in the field is pull the error code, and that can be done remotely. Telematics assures more uptime and a faster service turnaround. We can diagnose the problem and order the parts immediately through the ActiveCare

program, which can save days in the repair or maintenance process.” According to Pellegrino, the reporting end of the ActiveCare program can be just as important when you are considering the ongoing productivity and annual cost associated with each Volvo machine. “A monthly report is generated directly from our customer’s Volvo machine that displays fuel consumption, machine utilization, idle time, machine misuse, and an abundance of other information. Our customers can use these reports and graphs to compare one machine to another to see why one may be more productive or another burning more fuel,” continues Pellegrino. “The reports will also reveal the underuse of a particular machine, allowing for the opportunity to transfer that unit to another jobsite.” Pellegrino continues to point out that the reports can also identify bad operator habits such as prolonged EQ UI PM E N T G UI DE / 2 0 2 0

idling time. The information can also be used to create more accurate job site costs and estimates. Customers also find that they can track operating costs and even determine when it may be time to sell, trade, or buy another machine. All of this is made possible thanks to the combination of fleet monitoring and comprehensive, actionable machine reports. Every major construction equipment manufacturer seems to be offering a machine telematics program. Pellegrino makes it clear that it is the way that the program is implemented that makes a difference. “It is my opinion that Volvo has taken machine telematics to an entirely new level. The amount of resources that Volvo has thrown at this program is amazing. Not just the technology, but the people they choose to analyze the error codes and reports,” says Pellegrino. “You might have an error code that reveals something and another at the same time that says something else about your machine. You need a technician that has enough experience to realize that when you combine both error codes, you may find that you have a more severe issue that would not be apparent by evaluating just one of the codes separately. It all comes down to the technician and the person answering the phone when you call.” With annual fees of just $250 to $400 per machine annually, it is pretty clear that manufacturers are not expecting telematics to become some burgeoning profit center. It is, however, a way to better 26

The JCB 1CXT delivers the material handling and excavating capability of a backhoe loader with the maneuverability and transportability of a compact track loader. At less than 6 feet wide and 12 feet long, the 1CXT has a 60 percent smaller footprint than a full-size backhoe loader. The Right Financing Solution Could Make a Big Difference to Construction Firms During These Challenging Times – James Seela from Commercial Credit Group Inc. Talks Options By Ian Hoover, Editor

he heavy and civil engineering construction industry could not exist without the availability and use of large to small construction machines. Financing and maintaining this equipment is an expensive proposition, and fortunately, there are reputable financial sources that are ready and willing to help. Construction firms can choose to work with a bank or other finance companies through the equipment manufacturer and distributor. There are also independent finance companies that specialize in only the financing of heavy machinery. Commercial Credit Group Inc. (CCG) is one of those companies, and James Seela (Seela) is their Regional Vice President overseeing 13 western states. Seela is uniquely qualified in this industry as he has worked in both the heavy equipment sales end and the financing side of the heavy civil construction business. He spent nearly six years as a territory sales manager with a well-known full-line construction equipment dealer in Colorado, before being recruited by CCG. “While working for the dealer, I utilized CCG as an alternative lender to help out some of my heavy equipment buying clients, and I was very impressed 42

with how streamlined their services were and what a great alternative it was to other financing options,” says Seela. “The next thing I know, I am being offered a job and have been helping construction firms with heavy equipment financing ever since.” Seela started as a Regional Sales Manager covering three states, before being promoted to Regional Vice President, overseeing the 13 western states. Seela currently manages seven regional sales managers and has three living and working in California. “We proudly serve the construction, transportation, and waste industries with flexible, customized financing options. My group specializes in construction financing as an independent source and full-service lender,” continues Seela. “We offer everything from standard purchase money loans to leases, debt consolidation, and refinancing. We also offer working capital loans where we lend off the value of assets and equity of an existing equipment fleet.” Seela explains that the core of CCG’s business is with customers with whom they have built long-lasting relationships over the years. “We are not a bank. We underwrite, we fund, and we service the notes as a full-service lender,” says Seela. “We have been

in business since 2004 and have been through the great recession of 2008 and other cyclical challenges in this industry. Now we are faced with the reality of COVID-19, and we are here for our customers with financial solutions to help them weather this storm and maintain positive cash flow.” Seela says that there are several options that CCG currently has available to help out during these challenging times. “If a company has equipment financed elsewhere, we can refinance those machines to provide relief and potentially lower the payments in the process. If they have equity in equipment or other collateral sources, we can provide them with much-needed cash to see them through this crisis,” continues Seela. “We can also convert their lease or RPO and do all of this in one consolidated transaction. For some, it is about creating a new cash flow structure that will help them to operate their business comfortably. We service the full spectrum of the credit lending scenario, including those with A credit, B credit, or even a storied credit history that includes bankruptcy. fledgling companies that have not had much time to build a credit and lending history. We are very good at finding cash flow conscious solutions, even in troubling times.” Whether you choose to go with CCG or another lending source, Seela reminds everyone to do their due diligence and look into every detail of a loan before signing on the dotted line. He points to some zero percent loans as an example where a client may be getting an unbelievable rate while paying a premium for the machine itself. “Cash is king, and whatever solution can provide you with strategic cash flow to operate your business is usually the wisest choice. You may get a better rate, but with 20 to 30 percent down, and that is cash out of your pocket that could be utilized to operate your business. You may find that going with a slightly higher rate where you only put down 5 percent or even just the first payment at

closing is a better option,” says Seela. “A higher interest rate means paying more over the life of a loan; however, if you have to come up with $50,000 down, you may want to look at other scenarios. It is about the opportunity cost of that money.” According to Seela, the vast majority of his customers appear to be busy right now, and their need for financing has not decreased. “We make an effort to create and foster relationships with construction equipment distributors and manufacturers and offer our services as an alternative lending source. A customer may reach a financing cap with a manufacturer or dealer, and this is where we can come in and extend additional credit during these occasional periods,” continues Seela. “In our business, we talk about the Three C’s of credit and lending, and that includes Character, Cash Flow, and Collateral. A loan is also dependent

on the real value of an asset and the amount of funds requested.
