ome people wake up one morning and realize that they are severely stressed out, trying to run and grow somebody else’s business. Then it occurs to them that they would have more control and perhaps less stress if they just took the plunge and started their own company where the hard work is equal to the reward. Chas Rezner remembers digging trenches for his friend’s father during school breaks, summers and even a for a few years after high school. He then joined the Marine Corp. where he spent some time working as a combat engineer where operating heavy machinery was a big part of the job. From there, he moved on to become a marksmanship instructor. Upon finishing his service in the Marine Corp., Rezner joined the Operating Engineers Local 12 as an apprentice. Through his 25 years of experience, he became a journeyman and eventually a project superintendent. He worked hard, very hard, and then it hit him one morning that he could

be putting all of this effort into his own civil general engineering construction company. Rezner possesses a unique quality where he not only understands the management side of the construction business but also has the knowledge and extensive field experience to back it all up. His time in the Marines taught him many things and not just on the engineering end or even the fieldwork. Rezner learned about quality in performance, how to always perform within ethical guidelines, and of course, tremendous leadership skills throughout his life experiences. Traxx Construction, Inc. is a DVBE, SDVOSB, SBE, VSBE, and EBE corporation which was formed in 2011 by owner and president, Chas Rezner, and has quickly grown to become a multifaceted company, well equipped to service a wide range of needs. They specialize in all aspects of excavation and backfill operations for structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical projects throughout Southern California. They have also developed a tremendous aptitude for mass excavation,

demolition, and grading and have worked on some of the most significant projects in Southern California over the past eight years. They are proud members of the Operating Engineers and the Laborers’ Union, with most of their operators touting 20 or more years as experienced and qualified professionals. According to Rezner, it is these men and women, along with the best equipment that has allowed his company to surpass the competition in a relatively short amount of time. Traxx Construction, Inc. has a state-of-the-art fleet of heavy machinery that they have purchased since their inception in 2011. According to Rezner, around 95 percent of that fleet is made up of John Deere equipment purchased from Coastline Equipment. “We have a very strong relationship with Coastline Equipment and John Deere going back for 15-plus years,” says Rezner. “I had been working with Coastline’s vice president and general manager, Buck Baird while working for other construction companies and I just got used to the performance and reliability of John Deere machines. Buck continues to be there for us

unselfishly, by helping with the sales and financing of the equipment we need and never overselling, which we appreciate. We have been working with our sales representatives, J.R. Van Osten and Sean James for several years, and both those guys are the picture of professionalism. They know what we need and give us every opportunity to try it first and make up our minds for ourselves.” Rezner says that he operated several of the other leading brands, but always felt more comfortable and confident with John Deere. “Working with Coastline Equipment has always been hassle free. It just takes a simple phone call to either Sean, J.R. or Buck in sales and it all gets done without any excuses,” continues Rezner. “We also work with Coastline’s rental dispatcher, Jeff Warren, and I don’t even know how that guy does it.

Paperwork is always in order, and they never fail to supply prompt courteous service, and on-time delivery month in and month out. It’s just an awesome experience.” Traxx Construction, Inc currently owns and operates John Deere mini excavators, skid steers, backhoes, and wheel loaders. “We just purchased a new John Deere 60G mini excavator from Coastline Equipment a few weeks ago and have been using it every day since,” says Rezner. “We forecast our workload out a year in advance and try and keep around 60 percent of our equipment fleet owned, while we rent the balance as needed. We are a bit unbalanced right now because we are so busy, and I think it’s time to make a few more permanent additions to our in-house fleet.”

Traxx Construction, Inc. performs a good amount of hardscape work, including sidewalks, curb and gutter. They also do underground utility excavation and shoring and they recently did the mechanical and plumbing excavation work at Cal Poly Pomona. “We do everything shy of actually putting the pipe in the ground on notable projects for 8

universities like USC and agencies like the Metro Blueline and at the Ports,” says Rezner. The largest and perhaps most high-profile job that Traxx has done since their inception would be the work they performed out at the new Inglewood Rams Stadium for Morley Builders. “We were running a crew of around 40 working six 12-hour days,” continues Rezner. “We utilized seven larger John Deere excavators, four John Deere backhoes, and a couple

of John Deere wheel loaders on this project. We were out there for nine months doing all of the foundations and hauling out around 90,000 yards of dirt, and then hauling it back down to backfill. ago, and it was no small project. “Morley Builders was our first customer, and they have been very supportive, as they have been with all of their subcontractors. They are a great company to work for. We did all of the earthwork for the Space Shuttle Endeavor project at the Cal Science Center in Los Angeles,” says Rezner. “We were 10

out there for three or four months, and it was a great way to kick off our new venture.” Currently, they are on several projects, including one at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills doing earthwork and upgrade for the pads and utility trenches. Rezner points out that his company is unique in the fact that they can self-perform many

projects, as well as provide labor and equipment on a time and material basis, or at a fixed price for jobs of varying complexities. “We are looking at getting more into mass over excavation and shoring with the possibility of some storm drain and other wet utility work in the near future,” says Rezner. “I think we have been able to grow as fast as we have C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

From engineering and planning to project management and installation, 3-D Enterprises handles every detail with many years of professional

replaced with modern facilities, along with new landscaping, and hardscape. The design calls for tripling the amount of space for picnics, new play areas, a new concession stand, and other

amenities. 3-D Enterprises is performing the concrete flatwork including curb, gutter, and sidewalks, as well as grading and excavating for utilities, landscape assistance and a whole lot more. 3-D Enterprises, Inc. just recently put the finishing touches on one of their largest and most high-profile jobs to date for the City of San Diego. They were asked to construct the new Cesar Solis Community Park named after retired assistant San

The $20 million development is now complete and features a new multipurpose athletic field with lighting and backstops, two softball fields with a soccer field overlay, tennis courts, recreations areas, walking paths and parking lots, as well as a skate park, playgrounds, picnic areas and shade structures, a service building with restrooms and a snack bar. The park is located in San Ysidro and encompasses 15 acres with an additional 5 acres of joint-use with 14

the adjacent Ocean View Hills Elementary School. According to Shawn Elihu (Elihu), this job represents the most extensive project to date since the company’s inception. “We are doing it all on this start to finish project, to include the grading, paving, landscaping, concrete and hardscape, underground utilities, structures and so much more,” says Elihu. “Our portion of the work amounted to $14 million, and our crews did an unbelievable job creating a beautiful park for the

FATHER & SON TEAM ARE ON A ROLL WITH TREMENDOUS GROWTH AND ADDED CONSTRUCTION DIVISIONS GOING INTO 2020

ave you ever met a young man or woman that just seemed older and wiser than their number of years on Earth? That is the impression I got recently while interviewing Zach Zuppardo, vice president of Moreno Valley Construction. Although Zach just celebrated his 28th birthday, he has been involved in the civil general engineering construction industry in one way or another since he was only 15 years old. That is the age when Zach graduated early from high school and began working for his father’s construction company back in 2007. His father, Jay Zuppardo, first started his original company in 1984, as a small construction firm doing a few million a year performing concrete work for schools and moving modular school buildings around. Like many other construction 18

companies, Moreno Valley Construction decided to cease operations during the time of the Great Recession to put their capital to use in other ventures like real estate investments and even an energy drink company that they later sold at a profit. Zach Zuppardo grew up in the construction industry and admitted that it was the job sites and heavy equipment side of the business that excited him the most. “My dad and I decided to start Moreno Valley Construction back up around three years ago as a 50/50 venture,” says Zuppardo. “We began by taking on a few grading and demolition projects and soon found ourselves on a couple of interim housing projects. We even got involved in fire cleanup for a brief period, working out at the Napa and Sonoma fires in 2017. From there,

we found our way back into doing what we are best at, and that is performing a variety of work for the school districts.” Moreno Valley Construction, Inc. is a dba of MVC Enterprises, Inc. and it is not a stretch to say that they have come back stronger than ever with more than 150 employees and approaching $30 million in 2019. “We do site development, structural concrete, demolition, grading, excavating and will soon have our new asphalt paving division up and running within the next few weeks,” says Zuppardo. “It is our plan and intention to do between eight to 10 million in our first year in the asphalt business.” Moreno Valley Construction performs work all over Southern California, and they are currently working on a $2 million concrete project in Oxnard. a high profile, $4.4 million contract in Manhattan Beach where they are doing the grading and concrete construction work for a new 70,000 square foot gym at Mira Costa High School. “We started this job by exporting around 9,000 yards of dirt while performing the grading and excavating for the upper and lower level gym project,” says Zuppardo.

“This is a $35 million project overall, and we began our work back in March. We will pour around 3,300 yards of concrete before this job is complete and should be done with the foundation work within the next few months. We will finish up our contract with the installation of sidewalks and a seawall by the end of the year.”

Moreno Valley Construction is very busy right now, and nearly all of their projects are for school districts throughout Southern California. “The most labor-intensive job right now is a 70-day modernization project for Sunnyside Elementary School in Chula Vista,” says Zuppardo. “We love a challenge, and this $2.5 million job started

when school let out for summer and needs to be wrapped up before school starts back up here in a few weeks. We have the best in the business working here at our company, and we will have this completed well before the scheduled deadline.” Zuppardo explains that another challenge that they face daily is bidding projects against companies that seem to be willing to breakeven or even lose money to get a job. “We have an awesome estimator and a great sales team on

board, but bidding in a market full of those willing to low ball is not what we are all about,” continues Zuppardo. “It is not hard to get work right now, but we walk away from those jobs with little or no profit. We want good work with a fair profit and our estimators are getting us those jobs all over Southern California right now, and we appreciate their efforts very much.” When asked what Zach and his father, Jay, plan to do when the next recession sets in, his answer was simple and matter of fact. “We have already positioned ourselves for an overdue dip in the economy,” says Zuppardo. “We intend to begin once again investing in real estate, but this time we are extremely diversified and vertically integrated

to the point where our construction business will be able to continue thriving, even in a down economy.” Zuppardo points out that while there will be more competition in work for the school districts, their plans for expansion and new divisions will take up that anticipated void. “Along with our new asphalt paving division, we will also soon be taking on more military projects, as well as a new underground utility division,” continues Zuppardo. “My father had a B license that allowed us to succeed in certain areas, but to broaden our horizons, I recently acquired my A license, and that opens up a lot more opportunities.” Moreno Valley Construction is a tried and true Caterpillar customer, fan, and advocate. They currently own and operate somewhere between 25 and 30 pieces of Cat machinery at this time. Their fleet consists of everything from Cat skid steers and dozers to various sizes of Cat excavators and Cat wheel loaders. “We have around four

Super 10 dump trucks and have been adding additional units every six months. We have structured things where we do not have any heavy haul trailers, but instead, use our Super 10s to haul most of our equipment. “There are a few machines, like our large Cat wheel loaders and excavators, where we hire a heavy haul company to deliver to the job sites,” says Zuppardo. “We will soon be adding Cat paving machines, Cat rollers, and a Cat motor grader for our new paving division. Cat has the best full lineup of equipment available on the market. Our jobs are diverse, and our equipment availability has to be as well. There is no better choice than Cat construction equipment and that along with with the service and support we get from Quinn Company Cat, and our sales representative, Justin Usary, makes Cat the obvious choice.” Much of Moreno Valley Construction’s fleet is equipped with all new GPS and Trimble

systems, and they have virtually every attachment needed to get any job done right. Zuppardo says that around 80 percent of the equipment they use on a jobsite is owned and their utilization is extremely high with all the work they have going on right now. “We buy new equipment based on what we think our normal workload is going to be and not just because we are particularly busy at any given time,” says Zuppardo. “With the school work, we sort of know what is going to happen for several months or even years in advance. We will rent from Quinn Rental Services whenever we need to and then look to decide if a purchase is in order. It is never a decision that is made overnight but with careful

analysis of what will be needed in the future. Our entire Cat fleet is less than three years old and around half is made up of compact equipment. Things are going strong right now, and I want to take a moment to recognize and thank my dad because he has taught me everything I know and none of this would have been possible without him. He and I, and our entire team are looking forward to more growth through 2020 and beyond.” Cc

lie Nader started in the construction business back in 1989 and eventually started his own company. The civil general engineering company took off and grew progressively until around the time of the recession in 2008. By 2011, Elie and his son Luicci got back into the construction industry in California. The father and son team also began buying up real estate during the downturn of the economy before getting back into the Government sector, which is what they specialize in. Additionally, the Naders started a civil engineering construction and consulting company in Lebanon where the industry was booming at the time. Elie Nader and his son Luicci knew that they would return to the construction business in California when the time was right, and that time finally presented itself in 2017. This time they approached the venture as 50/50 partners, and both Elie and Luicci began the task of hiring and purchasing equipment. “We sold our entire fleet back in 2011, and it was now my job to review and evaluate the equipment manufacturer choices,” says Luicci Nader (Luicci). “Our previous fleet was made up of equipment from a leading industry manufacturer, but I wanted to see what everyone else had to offer before making my final decision.” Luicci Nader made appointments with all the major players and took a good hard look at their equipment offerings. “At the end of the day what matters most to my father and me, and most contractors, is the service you receive before, during and after the sale,” says Luicci. “Most of the equipment is manufactured with today’s latest technology and built within the highest standards. the best, in my opinion.” Luicci did his due diligence, and in the end, he decided that the obvious choice was John Deere and Coastline Equipment. “I was going to go with a different brand before I met J.R. (Van Osten) and the folks at Coastline Equipment. The day I met the sales and support staff at Coastline is the day I knew who we would be going with from here on out,” continues Luicci. “It was important to me that I made sure that we were dealing with an equipment company that was interested in a mutually beneficial long-term business relationship. I am not exaggerating when I say that Coastline Equipment treated me like I was the only customer they had. They went out of their way to genuinely listen to me and were generally interested in selling me what I needed at a competitive price that made sense.” Luicci says that he can call his sales representative, J.R. Van Osten, anytime, and in only a matter of minutes, he has a solution or puts him in touch with someone in service that can help him immediately. “We call on Jesse Sanchez in the service department at Coastline Equipment in Long Beach, and he walks us right through any issues we may be having. We had an issue with the lights on one of our skid steers, and Jessie came over to our yard that very same day. He not only cleared up the problem with the lights but also spent time with our service technicians to make sure they were aware of the service and maintenance schedules on all of our machines,” says Luicci. “I am going to be purchasing a new backhoe and excavator soon, and for us, there is no choice but to buy from J.R. Van Osten and Coastline Equipment. We won’t even consider any other brand. Coastline Equipment is by far the best equipment dealer we have ever dealt with.” Some of the newest additions to the Nationwide General Construction Services fleet include the John Deere 324G hi-flow skid steer loader, the John Deere 320G skid steer loader, and the John Deere 60G compact excavator. “Our John Deere machines are production-oriented, fast cycling units that make a difference for us out in the field every day,” says Luicci. “We are often faced with tight time constraints, and that is another reason why I am so picky about the equipment we choose. what we offer,” says Luicci. “In addition to installing curbs, gutters, and flatwork, we also do asphalt paving, ADA compliance work, as well as building retrofitting and remodeling.” Luicci Nader points out that it is their specialty work that sets them apart from your average civil engineering contractor that only digs in the dirt. “We may have a crew working on the 110 or I-5 Freeway on an overpass for Caltrans, while another crew is performing retrofit work for one of the many school districts we work with,” says Luicci. “We do it all on the remodeling and retrofitting end, particularly where ADA compliance is concerned. From cabinet doors and ramps to sidewalks and even bathroom stalls.” Nationwide General Construction Services is a vertically integrated company. Some of the other projects that Nationwide General Construction Services are either on or recently finished include work out at Wilson High School in Los Angeles where they are doing concrete curb, gutter, and sidewalk construction. They also recently completed a job for Bonita Elementary School in Carson where they performed everything from grading and road base construction to asphalt paving and concrete construction. They were also responsible for some demolition work, along with plumbing, landscaping and restoration duties. The Los Angeles Academy School is yet another recently completed project where Nationwide again performed asphalt, concrete and demolition work. “I am currently in Beirut, where I am doing construction consulting work for new construction and private development. I am still able to perform my duties while here through conference calls and video chats,” says Luicci. “I truly love what I do, and I owe it all to my mentor and father, Elie Nader. He has been there for me and taught me everything I know, and I am extremely grateful for his help and guidance. We are a great team, and we are both excited about our future opportunities together to expand our company, as we move into a brand-new decade together.” Cc

FONTANA ROOF ACQUIRES JCB 409 WHEEL LOADER TO HANDLE 24/7 PRODUCTION OPERATIONS AT PAPERMILL By Brian Hoover, Editor

Fontana Roof has been manufacturing asphalt-based underlayment for homeowners and the roofing industry for more than 40 years. They have built a reputation as one of the most advanced manufacturers of organic felts and SBS polymer modified asphalt underlayment in the country. Miguel Trejo is the production manager and has been working at the Fontana Roof paper mill located in Fontana for nearly 32 years. with the oscillating center joint or main bearing where it was wearing out often, causing downtime and costly repairs. “We decided it was time to replace the wheel loader that we had been using and we took a look at several of the leading brands,” says Trejo. “After careful consideration, we decided that JCB offered the best all-around design, especially where the main bearing center joint was concerned.
