THE BEGINNING

Clairemont Equipment was

Founded by Charles and Clara Zagami, along with their two sons, Ron and Jerry in San Diego's Clairemont Mesa suburb in 1970. Initially focused on party goods and small homeowner equipment, the company quickly broadened its product line to include various brands of small and medium-sized

equipment. By 1974, the company officially incorporated as Zagami, Inc., while retaining the Clairemont Equipment name that was gaining traction and earning a reputation for excellence, trust and reliability.

Brothers, Ron and Jerry Zagami were both there from the beginning, helping to plan and forge a vision for the future of Clairemont Equipment. When the decision was made to expand into the light, medium and heavy equipment industry, the Zagami family also made the move to purchase a vacant lot on Convoy Street in San Diego to expand their footprint.

Clairemont Equipment would now cater to homeowners, contractors and others within the construction industry with general construction supplies and equipment.

equipment manufacturers to sell and service their equipment. The Bomag Compaction line was the first major equipment distributor to sign on in 1976. This transaction paved the way for further growth and the addition of other equipment franchises. The Dresser Heavy Construction Equipment line was added in 1987, followed by becoming the authorized dealer for Komatsu Construction and Mining Equipment for Imperial and San Diego counties in 1991. Additionally, in 1993, Clairemont Equipment acquired the Massey Ferguson/Fermec tractor franchise, now known as Terex, further diversifying their product offerings in San Diego County. For awhile Clairemont Equipment’s slogan became, “We have everything from baby beds to bulldozers and that only covers the B’s.” Today, Clairemont Equipment may no longer have baby beds, but they continue to proudly rent, sell and service many major equipment lines, including Dynapac, Finn, JLG SkyTrak, Stihl, Yanmar and many other lines.

Komatsu announced on April 1, 2023, that Clairemont Equipment would be the new official dealer for Southern California. Now, more than one year later, the transition is complete, and Clairemont Equipment is in full control of all sales, service, parts and warranty work for 10 counties to include: San Diego, Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino,

Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura.

After 54 years in the business, Ron Zagami oversees the equipment sales side, while Jerry Zagami assumes responsibility for the rental business. Ron’s daughter, Michelle, and son-in-law Thomas Beny are both very active in the company, as well as Jerry’s two sons Mark and Charley, so it is truly a family affair. “Our General Manager Jason Williams has been part of our Clairemont Equipment family for over 30 years, and we are fortunate enough to have many other long term employees that have helped us through the transition. This was a big move for us to make, but we could not be more excited about our future. We have gone from serving around 3 million residents in San Diego and Imperial counties to 20 million

throughout ten counties in Southern California. From 18 or 19 cities to now around 725 cities, and from a 200-machine market to a 1,200-machine market,” says Ron Zagami (Zagami). “The great people at Komatsu know that at Clairemont Equipment, we are all about customer service and product support. We believe that market share comes from taking care of each customer with the very best in service and support. We remain extremely motivated and excited, as we continue to hire and train our team, and expand our brick and mortar to support our growing customer base. According to Zagami, Komatsu has done a great job helping Clairemont Equipment make this exciting but difficult transition. “When you begin transitioning from a family business to a business model that is four to five times the size of your current footprint, you need some help and Komatsu has given us tremendous support. Komatsu arranged to have Terry Rose, Director of Special Projects, to assist us in hiring additional sales, service, parts and support staff. Terry has 10 years' experience in operating retail stores for Komatsu, and we are grateful to have his assistance and expertise. We have hired 17 new employees and plan to add another 15 talented

individuals over the next 90 days,” continues Zagami. “This is a massive undertaking, and it will not all happen overnight. We will grow quickly, but also sustainably over the next year or two. It feels a little bit like David slew Goliath, as many have tried to buy us out over the years and absorb our territory. In our case, our secret weapon has always been providing consistent, reliable service to every single customer. We believe that we can double and even triple the Komatsu market share within three to five years from where it has been in the past. Selling a tractor is easy. Supporting that tractor is the hard part and that is where we are going to gain and maintain more client base. Product support is the key.”

OPENING NEW LOCATIONS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Clairemont Equipment currently maintains six locations in Southern California. The locations are currently in San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial Valley and three

in San Diego County that include the corporate sales/office location on Ronson Road. “We are finalizing our plans to open a new sales facility and a new rental location in Bakersfield to support our construction and mining customers in that area. We will continue opening additional locations southwest of Bakersfield in the future,” says Zagami. “Raising the level of consciousness toward product support is our main focus at this time. Komatsu has committed to “ramping up” their Las Vegas parts depot. Our Fontana location is just three hours away from the parts depot and we have a truck going back and forth as needed, allowing us to be Johnny-on-thespot in regard to parts availability.”

Dean’s Ongoing Journey with Laine Equipment and South Bay Grading

Research studies have shown that husbandand-wife teams in business often exhibit higher levels of trust and communication compared to other types of partnerships. A study published in the Journal of Business Venturing found that such partnerships are more resilient in facing challenges and are better equipped to navigate conflicts, leading to greater overall success and longevity of the business. These studies have been proven true by countless married business couples, including Shawn and Allison Dean, owners of Laine Equipment and South Bay Grading out of Santa Clara. The Deans started Laine Equipment as a rental business in the last quarter of 2021. “Laine is Allison’s middle name given to her by her father who has passed away. I named the business to honor my wife and her father and to also remind me to continue

to work diligently for our future,” says Shawn. “Allison serves as the president of Laine Equipment, and I am the vice president. She runs the inside operations, and I take care of most everything out in the field. We operate Laine Equipment along with several other team members and serve small to mid-sized contractors within a 50-mile radius of Santa Clara.”

Shawn Dean has been a part of the civil general engineering construction business ever since he started working for his father’s construction business as a kid.

“My dad was a one-man-show contractor out of Santa Cruz County, and I would help him build house pads, driveways, dig and install septic tanks and cut a whole lot of firewood,” says Shawn. “My first real job in commercial construction was for Jim Reber at Reber Construction Co., Inc. in Santa Cruz. I was both a laborer and operator, and a sort of jack of all trades, doing whatever was

asked of me. I then moved on to work for another civil contractor in Monterey County before starting my first business at 26 years old.”

Dean’s first business was focused on grading, excavating, and paving, and he did this for close to four years before going to work for Granite Construction in 2004. “I remember that my first job at Granite Construction was on a golf course job where we were moving 12 million yards of dirt. I continued working there as a superintendent before moving on to another civil engineering contractor in 2011, and then a short stint with Skanska and OC Jones,” continues Dean.

Then, in 2017 Dean decided to go into business with his brother under the name South Bay Grading, where the two worked together for around five years. “When my brother and I started our company in 2017, we made the decision to go with John Deere equipment due to my experience with John Deere

in the past, and also because of the excellent service that Pape Machinery has always provided to everyone over the years,” says Shawn. “We purchased around a half-dozen John Deere machines from Pape Machinery within a two-year period. I remember the rental manager in Newark (now Fremont). She would call us from time to time asking if we would be interested in rerenting our equipment.”

According to Shawn, this was happening right in the middle of COVID when new machines were being sold as soon as they hit the distributors’ lots. “After several calls and requests, we decided to give it a try. We had ten John

Deere machines in our fleet at the time, and we decided to begin renting equipment with Pape Machinery rental customers when I had machines available,” says Shawn. “Renting our equipment was working out well, so my wife, Allison, and I decided to go at it full time in 2022 under the name, Laine Equipment.”

Allison and Shawn did their research before making their decision to start a rental equipment business. “We saw that the equipment rental industry had experienced significant growth and expansion in recent years with a value of more than $50 billion annually,” says Allison. “Because of this, we decided to pull back

from construction in July 2022 and give our full attention to the rental equipment business.”

With the construction sector thriving and various infrastructure projects underway, there was and continues to be a high demand for rental equipment throughout California. “We primarily offer compact John Deere machines to include excavators, skid steers, track loaders and backhoes, with one large excavator and a dozer also available for rent. This can be a very rewarding business, but also a very tough industry with lots of competition. The financial pressures and stress can be overwhelming at times, but the trick is to always be willing to offer

more for a bit less,” says Shawn. “Our rates are slightly lower than our competition, and we always include the tax in our quotes. Once we earn a new customer, they see the difference in the equipment and service we offer and they become loyal clients. We own and rent late-model, low-hour John Deere machines, and always keep our units fresh and clean for the next customer. Our plan is to continue growing sustainably as we expand our sales force to push our revenues to the $10 to $20 million level annually.”

Shawn Dean says that he is very appreciative and recognizes that Pape Machinery gave both he and Allison their start in the rental equipment business. “We have a lot of loyalty to Pape Machinery and to the John Deere brand. Pape Machinery is an extension of our company and a partner to us in the rental business. Along with our core fleet of 25 machines, we also rent whatever Pape Machinery has in their fleet. They are our go-to rerent partner, allowing us to provide our customers with whatever they need, whenever they need it, for any size job application,” continues Shawn.

“We work with Ben Harrison who is the general manager at Pape Machinery, as well as his finance manager, Aisha Cole, and our sales representative, Jake Dutra. We also want to thank Raul Rocha, Bay Region Rental Manager, who promotes the majority of our dayto-day rentals at Pape. These are the folks that are there for us every day and make Laine Equipment possible.”

Since their inception in 2022, Laine Equipment has had great success with landscape contractors like Miranda’s Landscaping, Inc.

out of Santa Clara, and The Garden Route Company out of San Francisco. “The rental business allows us to work with some pretty interesting customers, like The Garden Route Company, who we have rented to for work on the Filoli Historic House & Garden in San Mateo County,” says Allison. “Filoli is located on the ancestral lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone, in Woodside. The estate was originally a private residence with hundreds of acres of coastal property that includes a 54,000

square foot mansion, and 16-acres of English Renaissance gardens. It is truly one of my favorite places to visit and The Garden Route Company is one of my favorite customers.”

Shawn Dean decided to reopen his construction business, South Bay Grading, in February 2023. Now, more than a year later, the company is busy acting as a general contractor on grading, excavating, underground, paving, and concrete jobs in Northern California. “We have an A license, and along with running our projects, we also work with other companies that do not have the proper licensing or bonding to take on larger civil engineering projects. We can help these companies with project support and management while we serve as the A license general contractor. This allows the smaller contractors to grow their business while also benefiting Laine Equipment, as we provide much of the machinery they require to complete the project,” says Shawn. “Having both companies

also allows us to offer operated equipment rental services through South Bay Grading, utilizing the John Deere machines from Laine Equipment. We are always thinking outside the box as we keep our eyes open for companies to partner and collaborate with on both construction jobs and equipment rentals.”

This year marks the 26th annual celebration of Women in Construction Week, an event that highlights and promotes the vital role of women in shaping the future of the construction industry. Women in Construction Week was initiated by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) in 1998 and has grown significantly over the years. It serves as a platform to empower women, promote their equality, and create a more inclusive and diverse

industry that inspires future generations to pursue careers in construction.

Throughout Women in Construction Week, many construction companies hosted a variety of events to celebrate and promote the contributions of women in construction. These events ranged from making presentations to high school classes, hosting job site tours, organizing luncheons, and conducting virtual events that engage and educate participants about the opportunities

and challenges faced by women in the construction sector.

Sully-Miller Contracting Co. (Sully-Miller) celebrated this memorable week recognizing the women within their company who have helped to pave the way into the field of construction.

Sully-Miller hosted several exciting activities and events to spotlight Women in Construction (WIC) Week. Throughout the week, a PowerPoint presentation was on full display on the office entrance screens, highlighting and sharing

pictures and stories of the women working at Sully-Miller. Specially designed jackets and women’s PPE, including safety shirts and glasses, were provided, proudly highlighting WIC with badges on the sides.

Bill Boyd, the President of Sully-Miller, kicked off WIC Week on Monday, March 3, with an email introducing all the events that would be happening alongside a social media post. Tuesday began with breakfast provided by the company for all employees, allowing the chance for everyone to gather and celebrate the women in construction. On Wednesday, the Irwindale team organized and invited its women employees to take part in a job site tour.

Various divisions, including United Rock Products, Blue Diamond Materials, Technical Services (QA/QC), Equipment, Logistics, Small Tools, and Barricades, gave presentations. This opportunity provided everyone with detailed information concerning the various functions of the construction industry, giving insight into topics such as aggregates, asphalt, traffic control, logistics, shop, equipment, and QA/QC. On Thursday, all the women gathered after work for a team-building paint night, recreating their own version of the cultural icon Rosie the Riveter. The ladies were able to unwind, bond, and express themselves artistically.

To conclude this eventful week, Sully-Miller employees, in both

the office and field, wore red in support of WIC. Sully-Miller also hosted an off-site lunch for all of their women employees and were honored to have Lacy Schoen, the President of the Brea Chamber of Commerce, in attendance as a guest speaker. The theme “Pave Your Way” was dedicated to honoring all the wonderful achievements the women of Sully-Miller have accomplished, and to continue to empower their resilience within the industry. CATERPILLAR UPDATES MID-SIZED ASPHALT COMPACTORS FOR 2024 NEW 973 ROUNDS OUT UPDATED CAT® TRACK LOADER LINEUP

Caterpillar Inc. announces updates to the mid-sized asphalt compactor line. The Cat® CB7, CB8, and CB10 Asphalt Compactors continue to build upon the proven performance of their predecessors with edge-management options, optional cab, optional split drums, and a new mapping display. The new mapping display provides an enhanced on-screen visual for easier recognition and touchscreen capability for simplified setup. Cat® Compact helps operators visualize the coverage area while recording pass-count and temperature data. The system utilizes infrared temperature sensors and GPS mapping to keep the operator informed of current mat temperatures, machine position, pass-count and pass coverage.

The new Cat® 973 Track Loader combines unmatched versatility with up to 10 percent better fuel efficiency, more productivity, cab improvements and optional Payload technology. The 275 hp crawler loader has an operating weight of 65,901 lbs. and replaces the 973K worldwide. It joins the 953 (160 hp) and 963 (202 hp) in the Cat track loader line. The 973 is the largest track loader in the industry, but still offers agility and ease of operation. The updated cab features a suspension seat and adjustable armrests/controls. An intuitive 10-inch touchscreen dash display is easy to use and features a standard High Definition rearview camera. Slope Indicate helps make operation easier by showing machine mainfall and cross slope right on the display. The 973 is powered by a Cat C9.3B engine. Fuel consumption is reduced up to 10 percent with the Auto Mode that will adapt the engine speed to the load. Eco Mode will use even lower speed for further reduction in fuel consumption in lighter duty applications. Power Mode will keep engine speed high for a feel of readily available power at all times.

KOMATSU DEVELOPS MEDIUM-SIZED HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR CONCEPT MACHINE WITH A HYDROGEN FUEL CELL

Komatsu has developed a concept machine for a medium-sized hydraulic excavator that combines a hydrogen fuel cell and Komatsu-developed key components to achieve carbon neutrality at workplaces of construction equipment. By advancing the Proof of Concept (PoC) tests it started in May 2023, Komatsu will accelerate its efforts to embark on the commercial production of medium-sized and large construction equipment powered by hydrogen fuel cells in the near future. For the new concept machine, Komatsu adopted a hydrogen fuel cell system and hydrogen tank, which were produced by Toyota, on Komatsu's medium-sized hydraulic excavator. Komatsu is working toward zero exhaust emissions and a significant reduction in noise and vibration, while delivering the same powerful digging performance and high operability as engine-driven excavators.

Aquajet’s Ecosilence 3.0 reduces noise and allows for a more compact jobsite, while enhancing environmental stewardship and lowering overall operating costs.

The Ecosilence, which is self-contained in a standard 20-foot shipping container, features an environmentally friendly, low-emission engine and high-pressure pump to power Aquajet’s range of hydrodemolition robots. The skid-mounted unit employs auto start/stop technology, like that found in many modern automobiles, which temporarily shuts down the engine when not in operation to reduce idling time by up to 50%. The engine automatically starts up when operation resumes. In this way, the new Ecosilence saves money and significantly reduces emissions.

In addition, the engine and pump are isolated and heat regulated in a sealed compartment at the front of the container, limiting noise to allow operation in urban areas and other noise-sensitive environments. This innovative design also prevents debris or outside air from entering the engine chamber during operation. Because of this, the Ecosilence can be used in harsh environments, such as harbors, without negative effects.

Aquajet’s EcoClear is a fully automated system for treating wastewater generated by the hydrodemolition process. The compact system neutralizes pH and greatly reduces suspended solids, so treated water can be released or recirculated through the hydrodemolition equipment.

The EcoClear moves as much as 88 gpm, or about 5,283 gallons (20 cubic meters) per hour, through a series of treatment chambers that neutralizes alkaline water to a pH of 6 to 9 and reduces turbidity to just 20-25 mg particles/liter. The entire process can be monitored and controlled online with the RECO control system.

The machine works by pumping water from an Aqua Cutter into an inlet chamber, where a flocculating agent is automatically added to help clump the particles in the water. The water then flows into a second chamber that introduces carbon dioxide to neutralize the pH. In the next chamber, the floc, or solid particles, settles into a storage hopper and is removed by the integrated pump. The water continues to another chamber for a second pH adjustment. A final monitoring tank confirms the water pH has returned to a neutral 7 before it’s pumped out.

Optical turbidity sensors and pH probes continuously monitor and record the water quality to ensure only clean water is discharged. If the water does not meet set limits, the feed pump automatically shuts down to prevent dirty water from escaping. The water then starts to recirculate until it meets the preset values of pH and turbidity.
