E

dgar Guest wrote a popular and well-known poem in the early 1900s titled “A Boy and His Dad.” The verse speaks to the special relationship that can only be found between a father and son. The poem brings to life the special time many of us have experienced with our fathers, where we surely know that we want to be just like our dads when we grow up. The poem also speaks to the father’s joy of realizing his son is ready to face life’s challenges and leave his own mark on the world. “The soul of the father is steeped in joy, for he’s finding out, to his heart’s delight, that his son is fit for the future fight.” 6

C. A. Rasmussen, Inc. is currently in its third generation of family leadership, with Adam Rasmussen officially taking the helm as president on September 13, 2021. This date was not chosen randomly, as it represents the day on which the company celebrates its anniversary each year. It also happens to be Founder Carl Rasmussen’s birthday. A lot has transpired since Carl started C. A. Rasmussen in 1964. As we review some of the more interesting events that have taken place, we will also look at some of the accomplishments and future goals of its new President, Adam. But first, let’s take a glance at how it all started.

GRAD IN G & EXCAVATI NG / 2 0 2 1

CARL RASMUSSEN, FOUNDER, C. A. RASMUSSEN, INC. C. A. Rasmussen founder Carl A. Rasmussen proudly served in the United States Construction Battalion, better known as the Seabees. After his service in World War II, Carl and his wife, Hazel, left the family farm in Colorado to settle in Southern California. Carl purchased a used tractor and began taking on jobs as an owneroperator before moving on to work for L.M. Wilson Construction Company in Lancaster. Carl worked for Wilson for 13 years and eventually decided to go out on his own, once again, in 1964 under the name C.A. Rasmussen. He C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

purchased an International TD-24 dozer and rented the machine for $19 an hour with an operator. Two short years later, Carl purchased the assets of a local paving and grading company and found that the surge in growth would require him to hire additional help. He turned to his two oldest sons, Dean and Larry, who immediately began helping their father grow the still small but promising business. By 1967, the company had incorporated, acquired a paving and grading contractor license and its general engineering “A” license in 1968. Around this same time, Carl also bought out and took over operations from his former employer, L.M. Wilson. 1968 was also when Carl brought his son, Charlie, fresh out of high school, into the family business. CHARLIE RASMUSSEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, C. A. RASMUSSEN, INC. Charlie’s father, Carl, put him to work in Simi Valley, where the business growth had recently shifted and kept Larry and Dean in the Antelope Valley to maintain and grow that territory. After just one year of service to the company, Charlie was called upon for a different type of service. He received his draft notice, and like his father before him, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees for one tour in Vietnam and another in Guam. Upon Charlie’s return from CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

the military, he decided to use his GI Bill to attend Arizona State University. Charlie then made his way back to California, got married, and started raising his family, consisting of four sons, in Newhall. His focus this time at Rasmussen would be overseeing and managing the concrete division. The company went through tremendous growth spurts over the next two decades, opening offices and divisions statewide. “We had a landfill and rail division and projects that went beyond California and into other states like Kansas and Texas,” Charlie said. In 1989, Carl Rasmussen died from ALS, and by 2002, Charlie’s brothers, Dean and Larry, retired from the family business. This was a pivotal time for many businesses as the economy took a turn for the

worse. Rasmussen closed many of their division offices across the state, and without the support of all three brothers, it looked like the doors of the main office would also close. Charlie made a decision at this time to rebuild the company. He gathered the employees at the Simi office and made a commitment to stay. He officially became the new president and sole owner of C.A. Rasmussen, Inc. in 2004. Charlie restructured his management team, and new corporate headquarters were built in Valencia. “The restructuring I did was based on being able to have our employees sleep in their own beds at night (and) spend time with their own families rather than scattered across various states,” Charlie said, making it clear that it

is all about family at Rasmussen. He added, “I am blessed to come from an amazing family work ethic where you earn your seat at the table. I passed the same work ethic down to all four of my children.” C.A. Rasmussen flourished in what would be one of the strongest economies to date. Now, after 44 years with C. A. Rasmussen, Charlie has decided to pass the torch to his son, Adam, who will serve as the third generation of Rasmussen’s to lead the 57-year-old heavy civil general engineering construction firm. “I asked all of my sons what they wanted to do when they grew up,” Charlie said. “And while each of them had dreams of their own, Adam always said, “I want your job, dad.” 8

ADAM RASMUSSEN, PRESIDENT, C. A. RASMUSSEN, INC. Like his father, Adam worked weekends, spring breaks, and during summer vacations. “My dad grew up where everyone had to pack a lunch and put on their boots in the morning,” Adam said. “It was the same with me and my brothers.” Adam also attended Arizona State University and graduated with a degree in construction management in 2004. He immediately returned to the family business and began working. He worked in estimating, as a field engineer, project manager, even part-time oiler. Adam worked his way through many seats in the organization before being named Vice President in 2016. “It was important to me to come up in the company.

Experience is key in construction. We have the best employees in the business, not to mention a long track record of success, and I was determined to learn as much I could,” he said. While working in estimating, one of the projects he helped bid turned out to be the first project he was tasked to help build. Starting in 2005, the Seabridge residential development in Oxnard would be one of the most complex projects for C. A. Rasmussen. The project was for D.R. Horton and covered over 135 acres of coastline, taking over three years to complete. It called for the construction of two residential islands that would be the home to both single-family homes and townhouses. C. A. 3-million cubic yards of earth with excavations that went as deep as 13-feet below sea level. “This was a real jumping-off point for Adam. He was dedicated solely to that project for over three years,” Charlie said. Along with earthwork, the company built two bridges, 5,200 feet of concrete seawall, and a dewatering operation that discharged over 1 million gallons of water each day to keep the project dry. Record rainfall in 2006 added another level of complexity to an already challenging project. As the engineer on this project, Adam was challenged every day. It was clear from the beginning that operators and laborers wanted to do a good job for Adam. “He just brings out the best in people with his positive attitude that fosters a culture of hard work and dedication to excellence,” Charlie said. “He has grown a lot since those days, and now at 42 years of age, he has been through the ropes. You are just not going to pull the wool over Adam’s eyes.” In 2009, another downturn in the economy forced more changes in the company. Adam was instrumental in starting the asphalt paving arm of the company at this time. With shovel-ready projects being released to stimulate the economy, Adam believed laying asphalt allowed growth through a recession, resulting in a stronger company. “I’m excited for the 10

future of the company. Our success is made possible through the efforts of our entire team,” said Adam. FROM PRIME TO SUBCONTRACTOR, C. A. RASMUSSEN’S DIVERSITY BRINGS VALUE C. A. Rasmussen has been a part of so many other exciting and vital projects that it is just hard to count or list. They were one of the first to arrive on the scene when the Northridge Earthquake struck in 1994, cleaning up the collapsed freeways and helping the Los Angeles commuters go back to work. Then there is the original roadway leading into Magic Mountain that C. A. Rasmussen built back in the 70s for The Newhall Land and Farming Co. Interestingly, C. A. Rasmussen is right back working for the same company today, widening much of that roadway on the Newhall Ranch project. This is a residential job where C. A. Rasmussen is working as a subcontractor

building all the streets for the new mega-development. “Newhall Land and Farming Co., or Five Points, is one of our biggest private clients. We have built over $27 million worth of roads, including curb and gutter, base and paving, on a project that should continue for the next ten years. If interest rates remain low, we feel the housing market will stay strong, and we hope to continue to build relationships with these types of customers,” says Adam. C. A. Rasmussen has been a part of building some of Southern California’s most extensive subdivisions over the years. This includes the community of Valencia, again for the Newhall Land and Farming Co., where they moved 25 million cubic yards of dirt in 1986. Currently, C. A. Rasmussen is working as a subcontractor on The Center at Needham Ranch for prime contractor Oltmans Construction Co. This was a 220-acre, masterplanned business park project C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

divided into two phases. The first phase began in 2018, and Rasmussen moved approximately 4 million cubic yards of dirt. After completing the grading ahead of schedule, they were awarded multiple street contracts keeping them onsite into 2020. Phase two kicked off in 2020. This started another 3 million yards of grading that was completed in 2021, followed by more street work. According to Adam, this project shows the great diversity of the company and the value they bring to package multiple aspects of a project. Over 70 percent of C. A. Rasmussen’s backlog is in the public works sector. Much of this work has been laying asphalt. In 2019, the company had two major paving jobs in northern LA county for Caltrans. One project on Highway 395 and the other on Highway 18. Each contract was valued at over $18 million, requiring more than 90,000 tons of asphalt, and each spanning over 45 miles CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

of highway. “Asphalt paving has become a huge part of our overall business model,” Adam said. “There are so many projects that we would not have been awarded if we did not self-perform asphalt paving.”

C. A. Rasmussen is also currently working for the City of Santa Barbara on a $12.5 million project that was started last year. This two-year project is around 80 percent complete improving Las Positas and Modoc Road

for the city. This project allows Rasmussen to self-perform multiple aspects of work, including structures, grading and concrete. C. A. Rasmussen likes to selfperform their work whenever possible. “Self-performing our work brings value to our owners and stakeholders because we can better control pricing, our schedule, and other components of the job,” says Adam. ADAM RASMUSSEN INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT Part of Adam’s five-year plan, completed in 2020, was to increase the company’s use of equipment and technology. According to Adam, this involved many things like using drones, GPS, field software, and telematics on machines, to name a few. He also made sure that each foreman was equipped with an iPad, eliminating the use of paper out in the field. This move successfully increased efficiency and productivity, both in the office and out in the field. Rasmussen has fully embraced the digital age by introducing technology that can track 12

equipment operations, monitor machine maintenance, and record field quantities with drones. The company also digitally creates its daily timesheets and records safety meetings, job hours, quantities, and budget data with the most modern technology. When COVID hit, Rasmussen was considered an essential business and was prepared. Virtual meetings were held weekly to coordinate fieldwork with the operations teams and the owners to keep projects moving. Field software allowed Rasmussen to push new safety meetings on the jobsite daily and keep the crews up to date on the ever-changing CDC guidelines. Due to the stayat-home order, Caltrans issued a policy that allowed for extended lane closures, enabling Rasmussen to accelerate their existing highway work with less impact to the public and better safety conditions for their crews. Adam is also repowering the company’s (14) Cat 651 scrapers to Tier 4 emissions requirements. A conscious decision was made to remain in the mass grading market, and the company continued to maintain a fleet of

GRAD IN G & EXCAVATI NG / 2 0 2 1

close to 25 large scrapers, including the repowered 651s and other 657 scrapers. The fleet of over 175 machines consists primarily of Caterpillar and John Deere equipment. “From mini excavators to D10 dozers and everything in between, Rasmussen has it all,” Adam said. This includes larger-sized excavators like the Hitachi EX800, rock trucks, skip loaders, backhoes, motor graders, compaction equipment, and even specialized low ground pressure tractors that are not common in California. When it comes to equipment, Rasmussen takes pride in its commitment to partner with the different manufactures in the industry. “We have a great relationship with our dealers. Our field crews are amazing, and they put the machines to the test. It’s not uncommon for a dealer to ask us to try a new machine and ask for our feedback or suggestions that could be featured in the next years’ model,” Adam added. C. A. Rasmussen has been building roads, bridges, highways, and communities throughout California for 57 years. They are heavy construction specialists { Continued on page 14 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

Peed Equipment Company Moves 2.5 Million Cubic Yards of Rock on Otay Ranch Village 8 Project By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor

A

pproximately 80,000 new homes are built in California each year, as demand for homes continues to outpace supply. Around 103,000 new housing units were built in California in 2020, accounting for an 8% increase over the previous year. A little more than half of those new builds were single-family homes, with the rest being apartments and condos. Recent

16

data from the US Census Bureau show that during the first four months of 2021, the number of new California housing units authorized increased 25% compared to the same period in 2020. With existing single-family home stocks in short supply, prices are skyrocketing as many buyers are forced to look at building new homes here in California. One of the housing projects currently under construction

in California is the Otay Ranch Village 8 project in the City of Chula Vista. The Otay Ranch Village project will eventually boast 2,334 units made up of both single-family and multi-family structures. Pinnick, Inc. is one of the general engineering construction firms hired to work on the Village 8 project. Pinnick, Inc. used the expertise of Peed Equipment Company, who recently successfully completed

the mass grading and movement of 2.5 million cubic yards of heavy rock material on the Otay Ranch Village 8 project. Ken Rudenski is the field operations manager for Peed Equipment Company and oversaw much of the company’s work on the Otay Ranch Village 8 project. “We supplied the equipment and operators to Pinnick, Inc. on the Village 8 project. We began moving the rock material in November 2020 and had our work wrapped up by November 2021,” says Rudenski. “2 ½ million yards of typical scraper dirt might take a few months to move. However, heavy rock material like this is a different animal altogether.” Rudenski explains that the heavy rock material is being moved to make room for just over 300 pads for houses and condos. “We purchased some new Cat 777G, 100-ton haul trucks to add to our fleet specifically for this project. The brand-new Cat haul trucks were delivered directly to the jobsite in October 2020, where we assembled in time for the November start,” says Rudenski. “We also brought in a Cat 6015B, 154-ton excavator with a 10.6 cubic yard bucket, a Cat D10T dozer, and a Cat blade for the loading and grading of the heavy rock material.” The first few weeks of work included pioneering a two-way haul road. “The roads were only wide enough for an average pickup, and our crews expanded that to more of a two-lane highway for CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

optimum hauling and production,” continues Rudenski. “We followed the blasting crew and loaded the rock material into the haul trucks. The rock ranged in sizes from a foot or two in diameter to the size of a Volkswagen Bug. The material was hauled around a half-mile away to a canyon fill area. We filled in all of the low areas with two major fills of the large rock and then topped that off with fill dirt.” According to Rudenski, the one-year-long Otay Ranch Village 8 mass grading project was not without its challenges. “Moving this much rock always means that you are going to be replacing tires and have the typical maintenance issues that go along with this punishing work. “I believe that we have the best Local 12 operators in the business working here at Peed, and that also goes for the best maintenance personnel in the business. Due to the high production required on this project, we put a full-time mechanic out on the Village 8 project to ensure uptime and quality assurance,” says Rudenski. “Other challenges included occasional rain delays due to difficulties maneuvering within the large wet clay sections. Even when dealing with large boulders we were able to keep damages and equipment wear to a minimum. One example of this is to protect the haul truck beds we put a scoop of finer rock in first before loading the larger rock on top.” { Continued on page 20 } 18

Although moving millions of yards of dirt and rock on new housing projects is part of Peed’s overall portfolio, the company’s focus has recently turned toward providing equipment and operators for large mining operations. “We have been swamped in the mine and quarry sector, and that has required us to beef up our fleet with additional units. This includes the addition of several haul trucks and large excavators,” says Rudenski. “We are currently on several housing and quarry projects in Northern California, as well as working for two mines in Utah and an additional two in Nevada. We also have several 657 scrapers working in Arizona and South Carolina.” Rudenski clarifies that scrapers are still their bread and butter, with 72 currently in their fleet. “Most of our scraper fleet is at the moment busy working on long-term projects, and 20

that has kept us away from many of these smaller short-term housing projects in Southern California right now. It is a good time for scraper rentals, but that does not last forever,” continues Rudenski. “We plan for the downturns, and that is why we like to be on these long-term projects while also diversifying into other industries like mining.” In addition to mining and housing projects, Peed will also be transporting a fleet of Cat 775 haul trucks to a large project in Florida. They are also busy hauling coal in Texas, and on another big project in Colorado. This is where a new dam is being constructed in Northeastern Colorado that will provide 30,000 acre-feet of water each year. “The Colorado project is a big one for us where we will have at least 55 pieces of large heavy equipment to move more than 16-million cubic yards of rock,” says Rudenski. “We purchased several

new Cat 395, 95-ton excavators for this project, along with a bunch of brand-new dozers and other machines that represents the largest job that we have going at this time.” Peed Equipment Company specializes in the operated rental of large Caterpillar equipment. With an inventory of more than 200 machines, Peed now owns and maintains (72) 657E/G scrapers, (10) 637K scrapers, (6) 651E scrapers, (40) 777F/G haul trucks, (12) 775G haul trucks, (9) 992G/K wheel loaders, (4) 6015B excavators, (14) D10T dozers, and several other pieces of support equipment like 16M motor graders, 740B/745 water trucks, 834H wheel dozers, to name a few. MB General Engineering, Inc. Continues Steady Growth and Success with the Help of Hawthorne Cat and Hawthorne Rentals Above: MB General Engineering, Inc. demos house on Pacific Beach Drive, followed by over excavation and recompacting of pad for new multi-unit dwelling.

By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor

MB General Engineering, Inc. was officially established in 2016 by Corey Maher, who had previously been operating as an owneroperator for several years, working primarily on residential projects. Maher started his new heavy civil engineering construction business with renting equipment from Hawthorne Rentals in Escondido. “I acquired an “A” license in 2016 and started out working for local general contractors while gradually moving into heavier civil engineering projects,” says Maher. “It was slow rolling at the beginning, and I rented the equipment as needed from Larry Thayer at Hawthorne Rentals. Larry and I built a great working 22

relationship, and directed me to Hawthorne Cat for the purchase of my first machine, a Cat 314E excavator with a thumb attachment.” Maher used his newly purchased Cat 314E with thumb attachment for many applications, including demoing houses. As he continued to rent other Cat equipment, Maher applied them to operate in tight quarters on foundation over excavations and to perform grading, excavating, demolition, and underground projects. “Ownership of just one Cat machine made me realize just how great the product support was at Hawthorne Cat, and I quickly recognized that owning Cat equipment was going to be a

GRAD IN G & EXCAVATI NG / 2 0 2 1

good thing for my business,” says Maher. “We have experienced tremendous growth these past few years, and that success has allowed for the purchase of several new machines from Hawthorne Cat. This includes our Cat 950M wheel loader, Cat 323 excavator, a D6T dozer, a 308 CR mini excavator, a Cat 262D skid steer loader, and most recently, our new Cat 259D3 compact track loader, Cat 303.5E2 CR and Cat 302 CR mini excavators.” Maher explains that his experience with Hawthorne Cat was immediately both productive and rewarding. “Matt Higgins is our Hawthorne Cat Sales Representative C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

out of Escondido, and he is a very professional and patient individual. Matt has spent countless hours with me to determine what machines are best for my company at each stage of our development,” says Maher. “He is someone that I can call on for anything at any hour of the day or night. I love working with Hawthorne Cat because they are a large, organized company that can meet our every equipment need. Hawthorne Cat is also a company that has the heart of a small business and cares about me as an individual. We are in good hands and have just ordered a new Cat 303.5 CR mini excavator from Matt

and are looking at purchasing a new Cat 289D3 compact track loader soon. According to Maher, the equipment distributor he chooses to work with comes down to product support, customer service, and parts availability. “I can say that I have never had any issues with customer service or product support at Hawthorne Cat and that is one less thing to worry about in this complicated business. “They have great people, awesome machines, and attractive financing programs. They offer an incredible sales and service package that really can’t be beat.” Maher points

out that his heavy equipment purchases were initially based on previous equipment rental experiences. “We look at repeat applications and rental usage to determine when owning makes more sense over renting. Our Hawthorne Rentals representative, Larry Thayer approached me a few years ago to say that we were spending more than $80,000 a year on rental equipment and that we might want to start looking at ownership. I took his advice, but what is particularly interesting is that we are still spending a bundle on rental equipment. That means we are growing, which is certainly

not a bad thing. I will continue to buy and rent equipment as we transition and seek out the trending markets and follow the money.” Maher clarifies that he remains conservative when it comes to purchases and growth but also welcomes any opportunity for advancement as it comes along. “I have to say that my biggest area for improvement would be replicating myself and training others to do my job. Everything is going well, and I have moved around from one market segment to the next freely. Now, I must learn to work smarter through strategic hires and promotions so that I can 24

focus on the future growth of this company,” continues Maher. “Right now, I like to stay out in front of each job by delivering and staging the equipment in advance for our operators. I get the projects rolling and then move on to the next job to do the same.” The tremendous growth that MB General Engineering, Inc. has experienced over the past few years has taken them from smaller, short-term projects into larger jobs where they act as a subcontractor or even prime contractor. For example, MB General Engineering, Inc. is currently on a bioretention project for a condo developer in Carlsbad. They are excavating

GRAD IN G & EXCAVATI NG / 2 0 2 1

several five-foot-deep gravel pits that will serve as bioretention basins. “Part of the job required our crew to excavate in the street to a depth of 13 feet to tie everything into the storm drain. Each basin is different, the size of which is determined by how much runoff there is in that particular location,” says Maher. “The primary challenge on this particular job has been passing through and under the numerous utilities located throughout the jobsite. We even rented a vacuum trailer from Hawthorne Rentals to get through the very bottom of the excavation productively and safely. It has been { Continued on page 26 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

a fairly technical dig with all the utility issues, and we are just now putting the final layers of gravel in place as we wrap up the job.” Maher says that his company is on several of these finish grade and drainage projects right now. They are also taking on more custom home pad grading jobs for various general contractors and developers. “Part of our plan is to begin pursuing environmental rehab and land development projects. I did some of this work for 26

a company out at Camp Pendleton on the beach there, and this is a niche that fits in well with what we are already doing at this time,” says Maher. “We also have a job coming up in Lake Isabella where our crews will be pioneering a new road up the side of a mountain and constructing a building pad for a private individual. Additionally, we have a five-lot subdivision road development project coming up in Valley Center where we will be performing everything from building pads,

Scott Equipment Celebrates 50 Years of Service to the Southern California Construction Industry By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor

or Scott Equipment, 2021 marks 50 years in business. With headquarters in Fontana, a branch office in Santa Fe Springs and the grand opening of a new location in Temecula coming January 2022. Fifty years is a long time when you put it all into perspective. If you are old enough to remember, 1971 was the year that Fiddler on the Roof and Billy Jack were released in theaters, Tom Jones’, “She’s a Lady” hit the music scene, and Apollo 15 astronauts drove a lunar

rover on the moon for the first time. There, now don’t you feel old? Richard Scott Sr. opened his first heavy equipment dealership in Southern California in 1971. Aptly named Scott Machinery, Richard Scott Sr. was approached with an opportunity to purchase a John Deere distributorship in San Diego. He jumped at the chance and successfully operated the dealership for 25 years. Scott Sr. decided to sell the business to RDO Equipment Co. in 1996 during a period of consolidation within the

industry. Years prior, back in 1983, Richard Scott Sr. looked to expand into the Los Angeles and Inland Empire marketplace. The economy was on a downslide, but Scott Sr. found a way to purchase property in Fontana to open another construction equipment operation that would sell additional equipment brands other than John Deere. Scott named the new enterprise, Western Sales and Rentals. The company did very well selling

and servicing quality Japanese brands, along with gray market used equipment. Then, in 1991, the decision was made to separate the company into two segments. One of the entities would go by Scott Equipment, Inc. and represent new equipment brands. The other company would be named Western Rentals, Inc. and focus on renting a wide variety of construction equipment to small and mid-sized contractors and homeowners.

1991 was also when Scott Equipment began carrying the New Holland Construction equipment line. Then in 2002, the decision was made to take on Kobelco excavators and then Doosan Heavy Equipment in 2012. As a result, Scott Equipment is the only New Holland, Kobelco, and Doosan dealer serving Southern California. The legacy of the Scott family business continues to grow and prosper under the leadership of Richard Scott Jr. and Gregg Scott. Together, the Scott brothers have grown their companies to new heights, adding a second location in Santa Fe Springs in 2016 to better serve the Orange County and Los Angeles basin. Now, in January of 2022, Scott Equipment is proud to announce yet another location in Temecula. RICHARD SCOTT JR., CO-OWNER & PRESIDENT, SCOTT EQUIPMENT, INC. Richard Scott Jr. was 18 years old in 1979 when he decided to dive headfirst into the family business. He learned everything from the ground up, washing equipment, working as a truck driver and mechanic. Richard says, all the experiences and transitions over the years have molded the company into the diverse and innovative equipment enterprise they are today. “We learned valuable business practices from John Deere early 32

on and have been fortunate to have so many experienced and talented individuals to build upon those lessons,” says Richard. “It is, however, our collective instinct and intuition that has allowed our company to evolve and succeed over these past 50 years.” Richard Scott Jr. is bullish on the company’s future as new products and technology continue to enter the marketplace. “I think you are going to see more specialized equipment in the future, especially as fully electric machines and other advanced technology continue to evolve,” continues Richard. “Legislation like SB1 and the new federal infrastructure package guarantees the rebuilding of California for many years to come. Our sales and rental companies will be there, helping contractors push dirt, dig trenches, and haul materials here in Southern California for next five decades and beyond.” Everybody has their role to play at Scott Equipment. For Richard Scott Jr., it is to oversee the new sales, service, and parts end of the business. This includes a heavy focus on the flagship lines of New Holland, Kobelco and Doosan and includes other new offerings that have recently come on the scene. Scott Equipment recently introduced Southern California to Mecalac, an impressive line of both wheeled dual excavator/skid steers and swing loaders with pivoting

front buckets. The company has also started representing, Terramac crawler carriers. The Terramac offers both fixed and rotating platforms that ride on low-ground-pressure tracks. These machines are ideal for sandy or swampy conditions. Along with these innovative new lines, Scott Equipment also offers a new line of concrete pulverizers, and has partnered with Merlo telehandlers. “These specialized machines will open more doors for both our sales and rental departments,” continues Richard. “We are also moving more heavily into the demolition and recycling markets with new offerings that we will be announcing very soon.” GREGG SCOTT, CO-OWNER & PRESIDENT, WESTERN RENTALS In the early years, Gregg Scott worked for his father, Richard Scott Sr., learning the ins and outs of equipment, trucks, trailers, and the anatomy of general engineering construction jobsite. for a period of time, Gregg moved on to work at the Deere dealership in Sacramento. He eventually returned to help run the San Diego John Deere dealership. Then, when the Deere franchise was sold in 1996, Gregg went to work in the auction business to learn even more about heavy machinery and trucks. Eventually, Richard Scott Jr. reached out to his brother to see if he was interested in partnering in the equipment and sales business headquartered in Fontana. Gregg was excited to bring his experience in the used equipment and auction industry to the existing family business. “My brother and I have always had a strong and cohesive bond. I was excited to put my own spin on things, like developing a new vocational truck segment to the company,” says Gregg. “We continued to think outside the box, and in 2001 we started our own auction company, which continues to serve the construction industry to this day.” Western Rentals represents the other half of the Scott Family 50-Year success story. Under Gregg’s leadership, Western Rentals has grown to now offer more than 400 pieces of construction rental equipment and attachments. This includes mini and full-size excavators, skids steers, skip loaders, wheel loaders, rock trucks, backhoes, a full line of compaction equipment, and 34

custom water and dump trucks. Western Rentals also has a fleet of eight low-bed delivery trucks that make their way daily throughout Southern California. Gregg also oversees the sale and marketing of used equipment for Western Rentals and Scott Equipment. “Our main goal is to help our customers grow their business. It is our customer service and high-quality equipment that truly set us apart. Unlike some other corporate rental or sales organizations, my brother and I are always available to our customers to lend that personal touch and helping hand.” THE THIRD GENERATION Scott Equipment and Western Rentals are in good hands with the third generation in place and ready to carry on the 50-year legacy. Both co-owners have children currently working in the business that are fully engaged in the process of eventually taking over the company. Britnee Scott Heckman and Jacob Scott are Richard’s daughter and son, and Kevin Scott is Gregg’s son. “Britnee, Jacob, and Kevin all completed their college degrees, worked for other businesses, and developed skills in other industries,” says Richard. “They were given jobs here at Scott Equipment and Western Rentals based on their skill sets and not because they were family.”

BRITNEE SCOTT HECKMAN, SALES & MARKETING MANAGER, SCOTT EQUIPMENT, INC. AND WESTERN RENTALS The 29-year-old daughter of Richard Scott Jr. earned a master’s degree in business administration from California State UniversityMonterey Bay. She joined the family business nearly four years ago, but not before gaining invaluable experience as store manager for Apple Retail. Britnee was not new to the construction equipment business, as she worked for the family business part-time during high school. According to Britnee, it was not an easy decision to leave Apple, Inc. after eight successful years in management. However, she knew that she belonged in the family enterprise, and she entered with a willingness to do whatever needed to be done. Britnee now serves as the sales and marketing director for both Scott Equipment and Western Rentals. She considers it her mission to reach multiple generations of construction equipment customers throughout Southern California. “We have a huge list of customers that C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

have supported our business for years. However, we also have a new generation of customers who communicate and find their information differently,” Heckman said. “We have to find a balance in marketing to reach both sets of customers.” For Britnee, expanding on the type and variety of equipment offerings is key to the company’s ongoing initiative. “We must continue to grow and differentiate ourselves from the competition,” continues Britnee. “We have put a lot of effort into finding niche segments of the market, and that will be our edge that carries us into the next 50 years of success.” KEVIN SCOTT, COMPACT EQUIPMENT SALES SPECIALIST, SCOTT EQUIPMENT, INC. The 28-year-old son of Gregg Scott grew up in the business, as he made the payroll at the early age of 15 by doing things like washing equipment and cleaning up the yard. Kevin worked his way up through the ranks, building hoses, stocking parts, and expediting orders. He even drove a parts truck for an entire summer and worked behind CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

the parts counter. But before going to work at Scott Equipment full-time, Kevin first graduated from Whittier College and then immediately went to work for WCA, the family’s auction company. Today, Kevin serves as the compact equipment specialist for Scott Equipment, which perfectly feeds his passion for heavy equipment. “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” says Kevin. Kevin, come 2022 will transition into the branch manager for the Temecula location. “I like what we do here and consider it an honor to serve our loyal customers with the very best in heavy equipment sales and service. I also feel lucky to have such a rewarding job that enables me to provide for my family.” JACOB SCOTT, WESTERN RENTALS REPRESENTATIVE FOR SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY The 27-year-old son of Richard Scott also cut his teeth washing equipment, and stocking parts during his high school years. Jacob graduated from California State University Maritime Academy. After graduation, Jacob took a job at the Port of Long Beach, helping

the longshoremen load and offload shipping containers, eventually becoming an operations manager. After a five-year stint, Jacob returned to the family business as the San Bernardino representative for Western Rentals. “I always knew I would come back to the family equipment business one day,” he said. “First, I wanted to go out and try something different while figuring out my own skill sets. It’s significant to be a thirdgeneration family member in a family business. I don’t take the responsibility lightly. As a sales representative, I want to build the kind of relationships that will take us into the next 50 years. I want our customers and employees to know that another generation is coming in to grow the company. This family isn’t going anywhere.” For Scott Equipment and Western Rentals, continued evolution and diversification are the keys to success for the next 50 years. NIXON-EGLI EQUIPMENT CO., HAMM AND HENSLEY’S PAVING & ENGINEERING, INC.

Left & Above: Hensley’s Paving & Engineering uses their new Hamm H12i vibratory smooth drum roller for compaction on a new housing development in the San Joaquin Valley.

Hensley’s Paving & Engineering, Inc. (Hensley’s) was established in 1989 by company founder, Lyle Hensley. The company is now owned and operated by Tim Hensley who has successfully managed the family business since 2001. According to Tim Hensley, most of the company’s projects are focused on public works, but they also perform several private jobs each year. From subdivisions to parking lots, apartment complexes and commercial developments, Hensley’s crew of 21-plus team members relies on only the best equipment to get the job done right. Tim Hensley recently purchased his company’s second HAMM roller from Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. “We purchased a new HAMM H12i vibratory smooth drum roller from Jose Hernandez at Nixon-Egli. We were very impressed with Jose’s and Nixon-Egli’s tremendous product knowledge and customer support,” says Hensley. “They listened carefully to our needs, were never pushy and sold us the ideal machine for our applications. I am very pleased and satisfied with the entire team at Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. From sales to finance and service, the professionals at Nixon-Egli were there for us and we look forward to working with them in the future.” Hensley points to some of the features that sold his company on their new HAMM H12i roller. “The state-of-the-art instruments are where they should be and are designed for optimum compaction quality, as well as simple and intuitive operation. We also like the three-point articulation that allows for effortless and highly productive steering operations,” continues Hensley. “The exclusive HAMMTRONIC system manages and controls all machine functions and that just makes our operator’s job that much easier. We are all very excited about our new HAMM H12i roller from Nixon-Egli Equipment Co.”
