Ryan Monteleone Excavation, Inc. Where Doing What You Love is a Daily Job Written By: Brian Hoover Doing what you love for a living will most likely leave most of us digging deep to pay the bills at the end of each month. Ryan Monteleone however is one of the lucky few that gets to do what he loves every day and make a good living in the process. His real passion is working as a certified Fire Ready Bull Dozer Operator for the U.S. Forestry Service and CAL Fire. Ryan is part of the initial attack detail that mobilizes to plow fire lines and firebreaks or cut contingency lines around homes and communities. When the fire is finally extinguished, there is still cleanup and rehabilitation work to protect against erosion and dangerous mudslides. The work 6
is long and grueling and that is part of the appeal for Ryan. “I was on the big rim fire up at Yosemite back in September and I have never seen fire like that before,” says Monteleone. “I worked for 25 straight days. 24 hours on and 24 hours off and it got a little warm in the cab. So much so that the helicopter had to dump on me a few times to cool off.” The 2013 fire at Yosemite National Park was the largest ever recorded in history, consuming around 400 square miles. It was also the 4th largest fire in California leaving unprecedented destruction behind that required 4,000 firefighters and even an unmanned drone aircraft. Although grasses and
2013 Owner/Operator ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR
flora will almost immediately begin regenerating, it will take more than 20 years to resemble a forest again and require 2 to 3 thousand years to re-grow the Sequoias. Ryan is no stranger to fighting raging fires as he was also called on to fight the Chico fire back in 2008, the Mariposa fire back in 2009 and the Los Angeles Station fire that same year. When not beating back the forces of nature, Ryan Monteleone can be found doing much safer and seemingly more mundane work, such as grading house pads, performing storm drain and underground utility work or doing channel cleanup and street maintenance www.calcontractor.com

work for the City of Temecula. Ryan just recently finished one of his many jobs for Temecula out on a channel cleanup job on Margarita Road. He was called on to remove an abundance of silt from the culvert that traveled beneath the roadway. This required the use of a Dingo walk behind skid steer loader, which looks more like a rototiller with a bucket on the front. The silt was removed one bucket at a time and Monteleone does this on dozens of other culverts throughout Temecula at least twice each year. “When the rains come hard, it can get pretty ugly out there. At times it is necessary for us to be out there 24 hours a day for a week straight, while other jobs take only a few days,” says Monteleone. “It is all dictated by Mother Nature and you never know what she is going to throw at you from day to day.” Ryan established his corporation back in 2008, but he has been doing what he loves since the age of 15. Like so many others in the construction business, Ryan learned the ropes from his father, Mike Monteleone. He worked for his dad up until the day his father decided to devote his time to running Monteleone Meadows, a wedding venue located in Murrieta. Ryan operates primarily as a true owner operator, but takes on assistance from a few other trusted operators as needed. His wife Alexandra keeps everything running smoothly by performing all of the scheduling and office duties. Ryan currently owns two specially equipped Cat dozers, but recently was in need of an excavator to aid in his cleanup work at the Hathaway fire, located at the north edge of the Morongo Indian Reservation. “I had been renting equipment from Heavy Equipment Rentals (HER) out of Corona and when I found out that they were a dealer for Hyundai, I decided to see what they had to offer in the way of a purchase,” says Monteleone. According to Montelone, he began demoing excavators of various brands, but after his initial time in the Hyundai 210LC-7 excavator, he knew what he wanted to do. “Operating the Hyundai excavator www.calcontractor.com

was a lot like driving a luxury automobile. I sit in these machines sometimes 16 to 18 hours a day and this is the most comfortable machine I have ever operated,” says Monteleone. “I was also impressed with the overall power the machine offered, as well as the cab’s all around visability, made even better with the addition of the 360 degree digital screen located in the cab. I can also stay on top of my Hyundai’s health and performance from the comfort of my home through its computerized diagnostics system.” Ryan has made it clear that service is just as important as performance and price. “I have had occasion to call on Heavy Equipment Sales (HES) (Division of Heavy Equipment Rentals) for service and you know they were out on our job within a half hour. I have called on others before
8
and they got to me four days later and only after requiring an $1,800 credit card deposit,” says Monteleone. “In addition to saving a lot of cash on this purchase, I also got what I believe is an overall better machine. HES and HER have restored my faith in the equipment business. They even offered to fly me out to the Hyundai factory in South Korea. I am now looking at adding a Hyundai wheel loader and I have to say that I would buy Hyundai over any other brand. I am sold on Hyundai and Heavy Equipment Sales.” Ryan Monteleone Excavation, Inc. has a good backlog of business booked and recently finished installing 2,500 feet of 36” storm drain for Farmer Boys Restaurant in Temecula, as well as grading the adjacent acreage for the commercial property owner. The company is also busy working

for local wineries, digging wine cellars, blending and planting grapes and performing general excavation and grading services. Fighting fires definitely provides Ryan Monteleone with quite the adrenaline rush, but he also loves the variety of work he gets from his day to day duties. Trench Shoring Company The Front Runner In Trench Safety & Service Since 1973 Trench Shoring Company has come a long way since Tom Malloy first started out 40 years ago, and a new generation is currently at the helm to help continue his legacy. You remember 1973 don’t you? If not, let me jog your memory with a few editorial visuals. “I am not a crook,” says President Richard Nixon, as he maintains his innocence in the Watergate Case. “Soylent Green is people,” screams Charlton Heston, while being carted away on a stretcher. Tony Orlando and Dawn were busy belting out “Tie
A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree”, your kids were watching “The Waltons” before bedtime and you may have been making your first cell call from a device that looked more like a brick than a phone. Ok, you get the picture. Tom Malloy decided to start Trench Shoring Company back in 1973 in order to meet the shoring needs of general contractors in the Los Angeles area on primarily public works type projects. He got his start in the construction business however, by partnering with his Dad,
Tom Teaching a Safety Training Class.

Emmett, as a general engineering contractor for several years. His father passed away in 1972 and their construction business was just getting by at the time, so Tom decided to go into the shoring business. He reasoned that with OSHA’s new standards, shoring would be a growing business for years to come. Tom started out with aluminum shores and then began manufacturing his own trench boxes and shore shields. He had a hand full of plates left over from his contracting days and began renting those as well. Different types of shoring products were added as they became available on the market. Tom Malloy even developed his own product back in the 70’s. It was called the “Z” Shore and it was built around a system of hydraulic rams that feature a steel jacketed structure to withstand the rigors of heavy-duty jobs. The “Z” Shore is still a very popular product today and rented regularly. Trench Shoring Company started out small like most new companies with their corporate office in a trailer on Avalon Blvd. in Los Angeles. By 1980, Trench Shoring Company had grown enough inland to merit a Corona branch office that boasted a whopping eight employees. Still, Tom’s dream of keeping contractors safe in the trenches through excellent, consistent service was beginning to be noticed by many and Tom’s

children would soon be joining the ranks. “Words can not express just how proud my wife Sharon and I are of all four of our children,” says Tom Malloy. “It was important to me that all of my children work for other companies before coming to work for Trench Shoring Company. It had to be a minimum of two years. I believe this experience has contributed greatly to their ability to manage properly and understand precisely what we owe to our customers and the industry we serve.” Bridgett (Malloy) Baril worked for three years at Proficient Food Company and Shaw Lumber after graduating from USC. She currently works in Trench Shoring Company’s Lake Forest branch. Bridgett’s husband John Baril has been the Lake Forest branch manager for 23 years. After graduating from USC, Kelley Malloy worked for several years at a small advertising agency in Los Angeles, as well as Saatchi & Saatchi in Torrance. Kelley now works at the Trench Shoring Company Los Angeles branch. For many years Ryan Malloy pursued his interest in music, playing bass guitar with his Orange County band Melee. They toured all over the US, Europe and Asia while signed with Warner Music. Ryan is currently working in the Lake Forest branch as a rental coordinator.

Kevin Malloy spent a little over two years at Dun & Bradstreet after graduating from the University of San Francisco, majoring in Finance. He then joined Trench Shoring Company as an assistant to then General Manager, Jim Coffelt. Kevin remained in this capacity for several years, learning all of the ins and outs of the business, until Jim decided to retire in 1996. Kevin assumed he responsibility and title of General Manager and was promoted to President of the company in 1999, when his father, Tom Malloy, stepped away from day-to-day operations. “Many, including myself, thought that it would be all but impossible for my dad to hand over daily operations to anyone else. But he has done just that and it has been a great experience for me. My dad has allowed me to fully experience and learn from both my failures and success. He remains as our company’s CEO and is always available for good council, and I do go to the well from time to time,” says Kevin. “We are very proud of the fact that Trench Shoring Company has remained a family business. We are a true working family business in that each of us contributes to the success of the company on a daily basis.”

Trench Shoring Company’s customer base has expanded into a much broader range of business types since their inception back in 1973. From primarily public works type contractors, the company now services a variety of utility contractors, oil and gas companies, Edison, Sempra Energy, fire, sprinkler and electrical contractors, site development and of course a long list of general engineering construction firms. “Further diversification within our relatively small niche market has helped us through the downturns. While one business segment may not be doing well, another may be thriving and that has been good for our business,” says Kevin Malloy. “What separates us from the other shoring companies is definitely our commitment to safety and service. As a former contractor, our dad knows the importance of avoiding downtime. He has been a great mentor and example to all of us here at Trench Shoring Company and his commitment to safety and customer service is truly his legacy.” Trench Shoring Company’s commitment to safety and customer service is not just a tag line or something that appears on a business card. For Trench Shoring Company it is about

being part of the solution at all cost. This means counseling a potential client on not what you can sell them, but rather on what they need. Talk is not enough; action is what separates the professionals from the amateurs. “Our dad has poured his heart and soul, as well as his money into this company over the past 40 years. We are somewhat unique in that we have not allowed ourselves to become distracted from our priorities. If we require equipment or additional materials to take care of a customer, it is a green light from our owner (Tom) to get it. Our inventory has grown dramatically over the years and we can compete with anyone on both availability and price,” says Malloy. “ Trench Shoring Company has grown from a few hard working individuals back in 1973 to around 200 employees today. Their growth over the last 40 years is also evident in their now nine locations that are fully stocked and ready to serve all of Southern California. Three years ago, Trench Shoring Company added a branch office in Las Vegas and just recently purchased and moved to their new location on Flossmoor St. The property is situated just across Craig Rd. on a three and a half acre lot. The facility includes a nice front office, shop and warehouse, where the equipment and inventory is stored and maintained. In addition, Trench Shoring Company has very recently been handed the keys to their new Bakersfield branch. It is also located on around three and a half acres and was purchased from one of the large oil service companies in Bakersfield. Phones, alarm systems and even a new slurry seal for the yard are currently being installed and an open house is being planned for the end of the year. Trench Shoring Company remains on the leading edge of the technological end of their business. If something new comes long, they are the first to do the necessary research to determine if it is a viable solution for their clients. For instance, back in the 90’s,

(Above) SBH Slide Rail system, flexibility of design allows unlimited adaptations to accommodate a variety of sheeted excavation requirements. Virtually any configuration is possible using combinations of single, double or triple Slide Rails, corner rails, side panels and in-line sheeting templates.
Slide Rail systems were just starting to be used by contractors in California. “Our customers started asking for Slide Rail, because a local competitor had just started making it available. At first we were quite apprehensive, so my dad and I made a trip to ConExpo to check out a Slide Rail manufacturer by the name of SBH,” said Malloy. “Slide Rail is a business that you are either in or out of and it is a huge commitment. We jumped in feet first and today our SBH Slide Rail system is a big part of our business. Our growth will always be dependent on what is best for our customers and not just growth for growths sake.” A variety of protective systems have been engineered and manufactured over the years, from the use of timbers in the early days to today’s steel and aluminum shoring, manhole shields, trench boxes and Slide Rail systems. Many factors must be taken into consideration when designing a trench protective system including: soil classification, depth of cut, water content in the soil, weather conditions, adjacent loads and other activities in the general vicinity. Adding new or different solutions to any business can be tricky and it must be done right. The Slide Rail system for instance is appropriate only in certain situations and will only work correctly and safely if the company installing it knows precisely what they are doing. “Aluminum shoring is appropriate if the ground is relatively stable and firm. If there are issues with the stability of the soil, you go with trench box and if you still need more reinforcement, you bring in beam and plate. The Slide Rail system falls somewhere in the middle of the

trench box and beam and plate, and if done properly will result in a dramatic savings,” says Kevin. “Our field representatives sit down with our clients and figure out the safest, most economical solution. We see thousands of scenarios a year and after 40 years, we have seen just about every challenge out there. We all look forward to another 40 years of keeping our customers and their employees safe with the industry’s best customer service.” Trench excavation is clearly one of the most hazardous operations a contractor will face on any given jobsite. Trench cave-ins pose a great risk and are a major contributor to excavation related accidents and worker fatalities on a jobsite. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its first Excavating and Trenching Standard in 1971 to protect workers from excavation hazards. In 1978, OSHA mandated the use of a protection system for all excavations deeper than 5 feet. Since then, OSHA has amended the standard several times to increase worker protection and to reduce the frequency and severity of excavation accidents and injuries. Trench Shoring Company, the entire Malloy family and all of their 200 plus employees are dedicated to protecting individuals and companies since 1973 and it is their steadfast service that continues to set them apart today. Trench Shoring Company sits on the Cal/ OSHA advisory board and over the years their efforts have helped to implement life saving strategies and new regulations. Trench Shoring Company also offers two NUCA Training Seminars; Competent Person Training and Confined Space Entry Training. The Competent Person Training Seminar covers the CAL-OSHA Title 8, Section 1540 through 1541.1 and Fed OSHA 1926 subpart P requirements pertaining to excavations, trenching and sloping techniques, protective systems and soils

Carrying on the Tradition and Heritage of a Family Owned & Operated General Engineering Construction Business Written By: Brian Hoover
Debbie Reilly and Rick Smith are a brother and sister team that grew up learning their trade from their dad, Ron Smith. Their father ran a successful general engineering construction firm from the 1960s and up until his passing on May 19, 2005. “We never really thought of doing anything else other than construction. We both had so much fun growing up and have 16
so many great memories of our time with our dad,” says Debbie. Rick adds, “Our work shirt sleeves are embroidered with ‘In Memory of Ronald L. Smith’, in honor of his dedication as both a leader and father.” Debbie has worked her way up these past 30 years, the old fashioned way, by simply growing up in the business with constant on the job training.
2013 Owner/Operator ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR
Rick started as a general laborer, before moving on to becoming an operator, foreman, estimator and eventually, president of the corporation. Debbie and Rick officially incorporated their own company, Lee Construction back in 1996 as a general engineering contractor specializing in site development projects. This would grow to include general grading and www.calcontractor.com

excavating work, as well as site demolition, and underground utilities such as sewer, water and storm drain. Although Lee Construction performs private construction projects from time to time, the bulk of their work remains with commercial and public works type work. Lee Construction has a bonding capacity of more than $3 million, but they also happily take on smaller projects, as well as simple grading jobs. They do a variety of work for the City of Los Angeles including sewer connection repairs and manhole main cover construction and maintenance. Perhaps the most interesting project they have performed for the City of LA so far would be the work on the 48” trunk sewer that was built back in 1929 in Studio City, near the Brady Bunch House. The sewer line failed back in 2011 and created a large sinkhole. Lee Construction was called upon to repair this and install another 100 plus feet of new sewer. This www.calcontractor.com
required a 15 foot wide, 12 ½ foot deep excavation on a radius at the intersection of Elmer Avenue and Alta Vista. They also perform larger sewer main repairs and new construction for cities like Simi Valley and the City of Camarillo. The project for The City of Camarillo in conjunction with the County Water Shed District was one of their larger projects to date, with around 2 miles of storm drain and channel cleanup at the local airport. This project presented various challenges with the airport traffic and congestion, as well as being an environmentally sensitive job with nesting owls and hawks on and around the jobsite. In addition to the cleanup work, Lee Construction also built rock structures, graded and back-filled, did some roadway work and bored a 12” water main line under the channel. Lee Construction utilized long reach excavators to do most of the storm drain and
channel cleanup work and they have a fleet of 15 pieces of heavy machinery, enabling them to handle most any job. Their fleet includes several sizes of excavators and wheel loaders, a dozer, a backhoe, skip loaders, skid steers, compact track loaders, water trucks, dump trucks and trailers and an entire lineup of UB Breakers from 4,000 lbs. on down. Lee Construction leans toward the John Deere brand for certain types of equipment like their two JD compact track loaders, their JD 700J dozer, the JD 210 LE skip loader and their JD 50D and 60D compact excavators. Their newest edition is the 2013 John Deere 60D compact excavator recently purchased from Coastline Equipment. “We have been very happy with our John Deere machines, but we still demoed other compact excavators before we made our decision. John Deere builds very stout and extremely comfortable machines. We have rented John Deere

machines in the past and when we do make the decision to purchase, it is usually to fulfill a certain type of work or ongoing job application,” says Rick Smith. “We bought the John Deere 60D for some long term work in an alleyway with very limited working space. Our new JD compact excavator equipped with a thumb allows our operators to spin 360 degrees to remove asphalt and then turn and dump into the truck directly behind them.” Other John Deere 60D features that Rick points to included the roomier cab, which is important to Rick who is a bit taller than the average operator. Rick also 18
appreciated the power and extra reach that he says equates to better overall production and performance. “Coastline Equipment has always been there for us in the past and their service manager, John Mann and his entire department have been great to work with. They have helped both our company and several of my friends with things like carb sticker issues. They seem to really care about more than just a sale,” says Smith. “Our sales representative Julio Gomez is also there for us whenever we need him and has made our operators day from time to time with hats and tee shirts.”

Lee Construction continues to stay busy working on several projects for Simi Hospital for companies like Turner Construction. They are currently out at the hospital working for Abbott Construction doing demolition, grading, building over-excavation and backfill work. The site work is being done in phases and should be winding down by the end of this year or beginning of 2014. Lee Construction is located in Simi Valley and serves all of Los Angeles and Ventura counties and at times beyond. For more information on Lee Construction, please call (805) 522-5195. Cc

EarthWorks Soil Amendments, Inc. and Envision Landscape Working Together For A Better Earth Written By: Brian Hoover To envision something is by definition to think of something you believe might exist or happen in the future and to picture that in your mind. This is precisely what Jim Daniell and his partners, Maria Daniell and Lefo Phororo did when they established EarthWorks Soil Amendments, Inc. back in 1994 and Envision Landscape in 1999. They all three had prior experience in the compost and soil mix industry and together they envisioned a company that would provide the landscape/ soil remediation industry expertise in all facets of soil management. 20

EarthWorks Soil Amendments, Inc. offers landscape contractors, architects and developers efficient solutions to soil remediation and management problems. They accomplish this by supplying organic soil amendments, conditioners and fertilizers that are derived from non-toxic materials that are both rich in nutrients and safe for the environment. In addition they offer soil and tissue analysis, formulation and custom mixes and blending specified mixes to promote the growth of healthy vegetation. EarthWorks can provide you a specific soil mix per your exact specifications, or upon analysis supply you with their recommendation for your landscaping or remediation job. The materials they provide range from sands, gravels and decomposed granites to a full range of barks and mulches. Materials such as topsoils, organics, and NPK 22
fertilizers can be pre-blended and delivered “ready to use”. These include Gap Graded Structural Soils, Nursery Mixes, and Light-Weight Potting Mixes. EarthWorks is primarily set up for wholesale operations, but will also sell to the general public from their manufacturing facility in Riverside. Maria Daniell is the President of EarthWorks and Envision Landscape and she handles most of the corporate and administrative work for the company. Lefo Phororo is the Secretary by title, but focuses primarily on the sales end of the business. Jim Daniell is Treasurer and he oversees all of the field operations. “We are extremely particular about the quality of material that comes in and out of our facility. All of our materials are subjected to the highest quality testing standards,” says Jim Daniell. “Agronomic testing may include a detailed soil, tissue or

water analysis and this enables us to ascertain whether or not a product is suitable for future use. The Mother of Invention, “Necessity”, brought about the existence of Envision Landscape, when the company found that many of their material customers were having problems getting their product administered properly. So in 1999, the three partners decided to get licensed, and begin participating in the business of applying the material they sell for their customers. Cemeteries are a big user of the products that EarthWorks sells and Jim Daniell had worked diligently from the start to get his foot in the door and gain the industries trust and respect of his product line. His hard work paid off and his company began to recognize the tremendous opportunities that lay ahead in this niche. Envision Landscape was called upon at first to www.calcontractor.com

simply develop new parcels of land for these cemeteries, utilizing their amended soils and other products. Soon the customer began to ask Envision Landscape to bid on new construction projects and the decision was made to acquire a general contractors license. “At what seemed like almost overnight, I found our company excavating out entire crypt fields to the tune of ten to twenty thousand cubic yards of earth at a time. We also started, excavating mausoleums, setting crypts and building all of the utilities and drainage that is inevitably part of this process,” says Daniell. “Going a step further, jobs also required that we repair or replace street utilities leading up to these facilities. Building out these burial facilities in advance has become more commonplace in the cemetery industry, as a matter of economics, and better overall aesthetics.” www.calcontractor.com
Today, Envision Landscape spends most of their time working for cemeteries and providing materials from EarthWorks. In addition, Envision has begun renovating and participating in the new construction of sports fields. This includes providing amendment incorporation, finish grading, hydroseeding, and/or sod installation. They also recommend regular maintenance programs to maintain a healthy professional sports field appearance. “We do two or three sports fields each year, usually renovating existing soccer or football fields for various cities,” says Daniell. “This end of our business is also growing and we see a very bright future ahead.” Other
Envision Landscape services include fertilizer-spreading services that include the labor or the rental of the equipment for those do-it-your-selfer’s. They also offer mulching services that also allows for the rental of vertical mulching equipment on a per project basis. Envision Landscape is also available for commercial and high end residential landscape construction services that include but are not limited to: general soil preparation, planting of fruit trees, small trees ands shrubs, hydroseeding, colorbed preparation, topdressing, tree and landscape maintenance, sod installation after soil preparation, and general maintenance services.

EarthWorks utilizes both large and small construction machinery in their line of work on a daily basis. They turned to Volvo Construction Equipment & Services out of Corona when they were in need of wheel loaders for their soil and amendments product manufacturing facility. They purchased two Volvo wheel loaders, a L120 and a L110 which are used for the mixing, blending and loading of materials. “We had rented equipment for several years, before purchasing our Volvo wheel loaders. I have nothing but praise for these wonderful machines. The comfort, reliability and production we get from these machines is phenomenal,” says Daniell. “This is why when the time came to purchase a track skid steer loader, I wanted to give Volvo the first shot at my business.” Envision Landscape had landed a job running approximately 2,200 linear feet of pipeline down a 25 to 30 percent ridgeline in order to bring water out of a 24 24
recycled main at Cal Poly, over to Forest Lawn cemetery in Covina. They rented an 80,000 lb. excavator for the trench excavation, but needed a skid steer for backfill and anchor setting work along the ridge. They decided to rent a MCT 135 track skid steer loader from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services. “We needed tremendous stability on those hillsides and the Volvo handled beautifully. We were faced with extremely limited access, working in an area of only 20 feet in width and directly next to a 3 foot wide, 5 foot deep trench,” explains Daniell. “A rubber tired unit would not suffice, we needed a low impact machine, so as to not cave in the trench excavation. It soon became clear that the Volvo track skid loader was the perfect machine for the job, and we rewarded our dealer by purchasing the machine. The Volvo basically sold itself, with superior stability and a perfect balance of power and ease of operation.”

Envision Landscape is currently busy working at Forest Lawn Cemetery, where they are excavating out approximately 10,000 yards of soil from an existing garden area. They are also setting some 2,000 crypts, installing sub drainage below the crypt fields, as well as putting in surface drains, an entire irrigation system and building block walls. They will finish by mid-December by installing plant material around the perimeter and lastly screening the amended soil and finally installing sod. This is Envision’s largest contract to date and encompasses 50,000 square feet of land area. EarthWorks Soil Amendments, Inc. and Envision Landscape are located at 1725 Agua Mansa Road in Riverside. NEW CAT® D SERIES SKID STEER LOADERS FEATURE NEW CAB, OPERATOR ENVIRONMENT AND CONTROLS—AND INCREASED ENGINE PERFORMANCE Caterpillar is rolling out four new D Series Skid Steer Loaders and updating two current D Series machines to create the new D Series line featuring a completely redesigned cab with first-in-class features, new lift arm design for improved sight lines, and increased engine performance. The four newest D Series models are replacements for their B3, C and C2 Series predecessors. The Cat® D Series line now encompasses six skid steer loader models ranging in rated operating capacity from 1,800 lb (816 kg) to 3,700 lb (1 678 kg). The 236D and 242D are mid-size frame models and can be as narrow as 60 inches (1524 mm). To provide broader selection for skid steer buyers, the 236D has been redesigned to a smaller platform size. The result is a power-dense radial-lift-path model that combines compact dimensions with impressive performance specs: 1,800-pound (816-kg) operating capacity, 123-inch (3122-mm) hinge-pin height, 74.3 hp (55.4 kW) gross engine power and peak torque of 195 lb-ft (265 N·m). The new D Series large frame models are the 246D and 262D with rated operating capacities of 2,150 lb (975 kg) and 2,700 lb (1 225 kg), respectively. The 236D, 242D, 246D and 262D feature an electronically controlled 3.3-liter engine that meets Tier 4 Final (Stage IIIB) emissions standards. The Cat C3.3B engine provides 74 hp (55 kW) with 8 percent more torque and a 6 percent increase in fuel economy compared to the previous models. The largest D Series models, the 272D and 272D XHP, were launched in early 2012 and continue to be powered by an electronically controlled 3.8-liter engine, which meets Tier 4 Interim (Stage IIIB) emissions standards. The Cat C3.8 produces 98 gross horsepower (73 kW) for the 272D and 110 net horsepower (82 kW) for the 272D XHP, which powers an auxiliary hydraulic system producing up to 40 gpm (150L/min) of flow at 4,061 psi (28 000 kPa) to handle the most demanding powered work tools. The 272D and 272D XHP also receive the new cab environment and features as well as the new lift arm design. J.B. Bostick Company’s new Wirtgen W 120 Fi milling at the Kawasaki Motors Corporation facility in Irvine.
J.B. Bostick Company, Inc. has been setting the standard in asphalt paving, maintenance and repair since 1969. They specialize in asphalt paving for shopping centers, industrial parks, mobile home parks and homeowner associations. Working primarily in the state of California, J.B Bostick has branches in Anaheim and Roseville. They own and maintain an entire fleet of state-of-the-art equipment, which gives them complete quality control over the wide-range of products and services they provide. Recently they took delivery of a brand new Wirtgen W 120 Fi milling machine purchased from Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. “We were in the market for a new milling machine and have always had a good experience with the Wirtgen brand. There was just no reason to look further. We bought our new Wirtgen (W 120 Fi) because it’s a superior milling machine,” comments Jim Bostick, the owner of J. B. Bostick Company, Inc. “A few of the features that impressed us the most included the machine’s overall power, the versatility of the milling drum unit, the adaptability of the conveyor system, and the state-of-the-art operator’s platform and controls.” Bostick adds, “Today, emission compliance is a big part of a machine purchasing decision. The Wirtgen W 120 Fi machine’s engine has low exhaust emissions, low noise emissions and has easy access for servicing.” “The team at Nixon-Egli and their representative Steve Kekich have been great to work with on this, as well as the many other purchases we have made over the years,” said Bostick. “We know we can rely on Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. to support us with parts and service through their two branches which incidentally are conveniently located to both of our branches.” J.B. Bostick Company, Inc. strives for perfection in all that they do and they continue to appreciate their long lasting partnership with likeminded Nixon-Egli Equipment Co.
