he California 91 and 15 freeways are among the busiest and most congested roadway systems in America. Estimates suggest that anywhere from 200,000 to 350,000 vehicles use the 91 Freeway each day, depending on the specific section in question. If projections hold, it is expected that the daily average number of trips could exceed 400,000 by 2035. The 91 Express Lanes opened to traffic in Dec. 1995 and were expanded an additional 8 miles from the Orange County line to I-15 in 2017. These express lanes were strategically located on the 91 Freeway to help alleviate congestion and common delays of more than 45 minutes. During peak hours of travel, the 91 Express Lanes can now accommodate between 1,400 to 1,600 vehicles per hour per lane. The 91 Express Lanes consist of 18 miles of high-occupancy toll lanes that run from the SR91/SR55 junction in Anaheim to the I-15 freeway in Corona. Often referred to as “The Corona Crawl,” the freeway has developed a reputation for traffic jams after many commuters began moving into the more affordable western Riverside County area in the 1980s. As the 91 Express Lanes continue to evolve, expansions and innovative connectors have been designed and constructed to reduce vehicular congestion. The area near the I-15

and SR-91 interchange in Corona has been on Caltrans, and the Riverside County Transportation Commission’s (RCTC) shortlist for a very long time. To this end, RCTC approved the contract March 11, 2020 for Myers-Rados Joint Venture to design and build the 15/91 Express Lanes Connector, which will provide that missing link between the two existing tolled facilities. The total project cost is close to $270 million. RCTC received $180 million in funding for this project from Senate Bill 132 in 2017. Preliminary design and environmental studies were completed in 2018, while $90 million in funding gap funds were collected from surplus toll revenue. Designbuild plans were fully approved in 2020, with construction finally beginning in April 2021. The 15/91 Express Lanes Connector Design-Build Project will link 15 Express Lanes to the 91 Express Lanes. This construction includes a new connection from the 91 Express Lanes to the northbound 15 Express Lanes. The connection will also serve the southbound 15 Express Lanes to the westbound 91 Express Lanes. Essentially, the Express Lanes Connector will allow for a seamless transition between the 91 and 15 Express Lanes and should be complete in Dec. 2023. The project will also extend the eastbound 91 outside general-purpose lane and the eastern RE N TA L EQ UI PM E N T / 2 0 2 2

Josh Dybala, Construction Manager, Myers-Rados Joint Venture 15/91 Express Lanes Connector Design-Build Project Josh Dybala has proudly worked for Steve P. Rados, Inc. for the past 18 years. Dybala currently manages and oversees the MyersRados Joint Venture 15/91 Express Lanes Connector Design-Build Project in Corona. “I have been on this high-profile project since the design phase in May 2020. I have also worked with the professionals at Myers & Sons Construction on the I-215 Barton Road Interchange job and several other projects in the past,” says Dybala. “I want to mention and recognize Dale Yeager, who is the project manager on the 15/91 Express Lanes job. We all work well together, 8
seamlessly as a team where the focus is to build a quality job safely and efficiently. It is also a pleasure to work with the people at RCTC and Caltrans, and every crew member and subcontractor has gone above and beyond to make this a successful project.” According to Dybala, the 15/91 Express Lanes Connector job is a multistage project that includes the construction of a connector bridge and widening existing freeway lanes. “This project is comprised of three stages with several phases within each stage. Simply put, Stage 1 essentially includes widening the eastbound 91 freeway while also constructing a temporary crossover on the I-15. Both are part of Stage 1 while operating independent of one another,” says Dybala. “Stage 2 is primarily all bridgework, and Stage 3 is where we put it all back together into the final configuration. This is a simplification of a very complicated and challenging project. We are

currently in a transition stage where we are working on portions of Stage 1 and Stage 2 simultaneously.” Dybala says that the connector bridgework is made up of four separate frames to achieve the final complete connector bridge { Continued on page 10 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

unit. “The bridge work includes the construction of one four-frame connector, one two-frame connector, one bridge widening section, and a total of 31 columns. One of the widening spans is a single concrete girder that goes over the railroad. We also have an outside widening on the eastbound 91 that will facilitate more room on the median of the 91 Freeway,” says Dybala. “Our crews were also tasked with putting a crossover in place at the median on the 91 Freeway. This is necessary as we build the bridge connecting the middle median of the 91 to the median of the 15. This is being done to facilitate an express lane movement on the South I-15 to the 91 West and then again for the 91 East to the I-15 North Freeway. Additionally, the 91 Freeway will be widened for a two-mile stretch from Main Street to Promenade.” Dybala explains the crossover section in more detail. “The temporary crossover area is where we took the southbound 15 Express Lane traffic and pushed it to the northbound side. So, instead of traffic on both sides of the median, all of the Express Lane traffic is now on the northbound side. This allows for plenty of room for the 10
construction of the bridge section in the center of the freeway,” says Dybala. “Working in the middle of the freeway has its space and access challenges. Two freeways coming together and managing all of these people, machinery and different trades. It is all in a day’s work out here. There are around 10 different work areas that all have their unique access and are being worked on concurrently.” According to Dybala, it is all about proper planning and implementing an efficient logistical strategy. “Moving forward, the existing railroad areas will also present a challenge. We have two bridge sections, the widening and the smaller connector that will traverse the railroad infrastructure. That brings another whole set of challenges,” continues Dybala. “The job also includes four 55-hour closures to construct and remove bridge falsework over the freeways.” The People and Equipment Make a Difference Dybala says that at the height of the 15/91 Express Lanes Connector Design-Build Project, the craft individuals count would be around 140, with another 25 in management and another 80 or

so in subcontractors. “As the Joint Venture, we are self-performing more than half the work with quality subcontractors doing the design (T.Y. Lin International Group), rebar (Commercial Metals Company), electrical/guardrail/overhead signage (Ferreira Construction), asphalt (R. J. Noble Company), bridge demolition (Advantage Demolition), pile driving (Tipco Engineering Inc.), CIDH (CondonJohnson & Associates Inc.) and landscaping (Pacific Restoration Group Inc.),” says Dybala. “We also have Savala Equipment Company onsite with both bare and operated rentals. We have everything from operated backhoes with breakers to operated blades and bare rented excavators.” Specifically, some of the equipment that the Myers-Rados JV project has rented from Savala C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

include a Komatsu GD655-6 motor grader, a Cat 613 scraper, a Cat 450 backhoe, a John Deere 470 excavator and a Volvo ECR235 excavator. “Savala offers both bare and operated rentals, and they have helped us out and have been there for us on a long list of projects over the years,” says Dybala. “We sometimes are faced with a situation where we require a specialized operator or piece of equipment, like demo, for instance. Often, companies like Savala have a more specialized operator, or a specific piece that we either don’t have in our fleet or the equipment is being used somewhere else. Savala is one of just a few rental companies that we trust for our operated rental solutions. We trust in their years of CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M
experience and professionalism. They have great customer service, and several of our superintendents have built long-standing relationships with Savala.” Dybala explains the massiveness of the structure and the multiple layers they have to deal with daily. “The concrete work is all pouredin-place and placed with a roller screed. A total of 42,928 cubic yards of concrete will be utilized on this project, 4,000 tons of rebar and dozens of I-beams with some that weigh more than 211 pounds per linear foot,” continues Dybala. “The new bridgework is being installed under and above other existing bridges and structures. The way these bridges are being fed through the other existing
bridges is a fairly unique situation, even for our experienced crews. To create headspace and vertical access, we planned ahead for the use of various unique crane configurations. It is almost as if these bridge sections should have been built first instead of last. Even with all of these challenges, our Joint Venture crews and subcontractors have just done an outstanding job, and we are all proud to be a part of such an important infrastructure project.” For more information on the 15/91 Express Lanes Connector Design-Build Project, please visit rctc.org/15-91connector. and another 1,300 linear feet of 96” of Reinforced Round Concrete (RCP) pipe. “We started the storm drain work on this project around four weeks back and should have it all wrapped up in another 20 weeks,” says Hamilton. “We are dealing with a lot of rock, sand, and cobble as our crews dig to depths of 24 feet. All of the spoils are stockpiled onsite, crushed and screened, and then returned for use as backfill.” According to Hamilton, Apple Valley Construction is using a Cat 375 excavator, a John Deere 350G LC excavator, and a John Deere 744L wheel loader from their fleet for all of the trenching and loading work. Additionally, they rented two Volvo A45G articulated rock trucks from C5 Equipment Rentals, LLC (C5) to haul the excavated material for screening and then back again for fill material. “We will move approximately 60,000 cubic yards of trench spoils on this project. Our operators are excavating to depths CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M
of 24 feet and widths of 20 feet in the shored areas and 75 feet wide in the open cut areas,” says Hamilton. “We made use of the area where we had room to avoid the use of shoring. Other areas, however, required the use of slide shores and shields, and we rented around 400 feet of this shoring from Trench Shoring Company.” Hamilton says that C5 Equipment Rentals is one of their “go-to” bare and operated rental companies. “We have utilized C5 on a variety of projects and they have never let us down. I have rented scrapers, rollers and rock trucks and everything always arrives well-maintained and ready to work. Our rental sales representative, Tom Callus, is always professional and looks out for our individual specific needs,” says Hamilton. “For that matter, everyone that we have dealt with at C5 has been honest, prompt, and straightforward at all times. We go with C5 because they treat us as partners and operate as
a part of our team. They offer latemodel, well-maintained equipment that alleviates breakdowns or hassles out in the field. If there is an issue, they are always right there to make it right. We all enjoy working with C5 Equipment Rentals.” Apple Valley Construction maintains its own fleet of excavators, wheel loaders, backhoes, skip loaders, mini excavators, skid steers, motor graders and compaction rollers. “Rental comes into play for the equipment we do not use often enough to own. For example, we don’t utilize rock trucks day in and day out, and the same goes for scrapers and dozers,” continues Hamilton. “We just completed a grading project in Irvine where we rented several scrapers from C5. Machines like rock trucks and scrapers will always be rented, and we are happy to have rental firms out there like C5 to meet our needs.”

A Day In The Life of Hawthorne Rentals Sales Representative, Trevor Kolocheski By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor
I
f you ever wondered what a typical day is like for a rental equipment sales representative, you might want to take the time to do a little ridealong someday. I did just that a few weeks back when I spent a day shadowing Trevor Kolocheski of Hawthorne Rentals. I must say that I have a newfound respect for what a rental salesperson does and goes through every day. The first thing that surprised and amazed me was that Trevor’s phone never stopped ringing. The next interesting takeaway was the sheer number of questions, requests and problem-solving that Kolocheski had to go through all 18

day long. It was like a week’s worth of work being accomplished in one day. Yet, Kolocheski took it all in stride like it was just another day because it was just another day for Trevor Kolocheski. Our day started with a field call to ACCO Engineered Systems (ACCO), who was working in Otay Mesa on a job for a major warehouse distribution company. Kolocheski arrived onsite and met with ACCO’s underground division superintendent, Robb Mortimer, to review his current and future equipment needs on the warehouse distribution center job and other projects in the area. ACCO had a variety of

Cat machines onsite for use on excavating, moving materials and placing trench boxes, among other duties. According to Mortimer, Kolocheski has been there for him many times since they began doing business together. “We were digging in some hard-packed dirt, and the teeth we had on our rental bucket were just not getting it. Trevor dispatched one of his mechanics to our jobsite that same day to get the teeth changed out so that we could keep moving without downtime,” says Mortimer. “Then, when we started the other warehouse distribution center project across the street, we C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M
Here is what Robb Mortimer had to say about Hawthorne Rentals and Trevor Kolocheski. “I had been working with one of Hawthorne’s competitors on this and other projects. I first met Trevor on this very warehouse distribution project around a year ago. He was doing everything he could to earn our business,” says Mortimer. “The other rental company was unable to procure a Cat 335 zerotail-swing excavator, and so I called Trevor to see if he could help us out.” Mortimer explains that the Cat 335 zero-tail-swing excavator was the perfect machine for the job. “We were digging down 25 feet on Otay Mesa
found that we had some special conditions and needs concerning the excavation and placement of 54” storm drain to a depth of 35 feet. I needed several large excavators and multiple bucket configurations. Trevor was able to provide everything without any issues. From that point on, we were pretty well exclusive with Hawthorne rentals on that project going forward.” After leaving the ACCO jobsite in Otay Mesa, we headed over to Petco Park to meet with Abram Lopez of General Coatings. Lopez rents scissor lifts and other highreach equipment from Hawthorne Rentals. On this particular occasion, General Coatings had rented numerous lifts to paint several areas of the stadium. “The high reach end of our rental business has grown exponentially over the last several years,” says Kolocheski. “We have a large, CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

excellent selection of name brands and all sizes of boom lifts, scissor lifts and vertical personnel lifts.”
We made several other stops in between the never-ending phone calls from customers. Kolocheski was also almost constantly on the phone with his hard-working support staff to find very specific machines for numerous clients. Unfortunately, things don’t always go smoothly in the heavy equipment rental business, and this particular day was no exception. Kolocheski received a call from OHL USA, Inc., who had several machines from Hawthorne Rentals on a job in Mission Trails. They had a Cat 335 excavator that was having a problem with the machine coupler and could not change out buckets and other attachments. “Things don’t always go smoothly on every project, and so I like to address problematic situations head-on. So, I visited the project site to get a firsthand look at the problem and ended up having to order a Cat 336 to replace the

Here is what Abram Lopez had to say about Hawthorne Rentals and Trevor Kolocheski. “We rent scissor lifts, and boom lifts from Hawthorne Rentals to keep our production going smoothly and on time. I have been dealing with Trevor for around two years now, and he has never let me down,” says Lopez. “Hawthorne Rentals has the best equipment currently available in the marketplace, and they consistently offer great service and are always on time. He started as a yard person, cleaning machines and spending his days in the wash rack. From there, Kolocheski was offered an opportunity in 2014 to move to the rental counter at Hawthorne’s new branch in Chula Vista. He jumped at the chance and worked behind the counter for the next three to four years. Next, Kolocheski was offered a position at the main office to work as a sales administrator to support the rental sales staff 20
and their customers. After gaining experience in this position for a few years, Kolocheski was informed that a rental sales position was available in Lakeside. “I was so excited to be given a chance to work out in the field as a rental sales associate here at Hawthorne Rentals,” continues Kolocheski. “This is an amazing job, and I am so thankful for the opportunity. I just love what I do, and I hope that all of my customers realize just how important they are to Hawthorne Rentals and me.” Kolocheski likes to plan out each day, knowing that it can all change at a moment’s notice. “My territory is essentially Otay Mesa, Chula Vista, and the Eastlake

area. I break that down into four separate areas and then spend a full day, rotating my presence in each of the four quadrants,” says Kolocheski. “We all strive to acquire a certain number of new customers each month. I visit jobsites and offices and do what I can to meet new people, particularly those in charge of acquiring rental equipment.” To achieve this, Kolocheski will do cold calls and even show up at job sites to meet the project managers and superintendents. “I just want that chance to show new and potential customers what we are made of here at Hawthorne Rentals. but I do keep coming back, and sometimes that is what it takes to finally get that chance to build a successful relationship with a company,” continues Kolocheski. “Being backed by Caterpillar products and Hawthorne Cat has its advantages and is a potent tool out in the field. People take pride when they get into a Cat machine, and having the opportunity to work with the Cat dealer on those rentals is just an added bonus.” Hawthorne Rentals is about more than just quality Cat equipment. They also offer many other favorite brands, including LGMG, Toro, JLG, Genie, Skytrak, Multiquip, Allmand, Sullair and more. “We listen to our customers and if they have a particular brand, make, or model that they use consistently, we will sometimes purchase that special machine to support their ongoing efforts,” says Kolocheski. “We rent many excavators, especially the bigger units. We are getting more of those large machines into our fleet right now, along with other popular machines like Cat track and rubber-tired skid steer loaders. There are certain machines that we can just never get enough of, 22
but we do everything we can to keep up with demand. We have a rental barometer that shows us the percentage of usage for each machine. Then, at the end of the year, the corporate office has a planning meeting to determine what needs to be added. We are the boots on the ground, and they listen to what we have to say with a mutual interest in keeping our customers satisfied.” Kolocheski explains that his customers often inform him that they are ready to purchase specific machines that they have had on rent for an extended period of time. When this happens, Kolocheski and other rental sales representatives inform the Hawthorne Cat sales representative in that area. They proceed to write up a rentalpurchase option (RPO) or an outright purchase contract. “As rental sales representatives, we are authorized to sell non-Cat products, and everything in our inventory is always for sale. Typically, we keep a unit in our fleet no longer than three years. Machines that are always in high demand, like a Cat D6 dozer, go out on rent a lot, and we may keep those units for longer intervals. We want to have top-of-the-line, lowhour, well-maintained machines

in our fleet at all times. Once they experience the Hawthorne Rentals difference, they remain customers for life. What I bring is exceptional personal service. I get along with people, and I like meeting them and catering to their rental equipment needs. It is not always easy, but I always go to bat for my customers while also doing right by Hawthorne. From the smallest weekend warrior to the largest general contractor in the business, I make it my mission to work equally as hard for both.” Hawthorne Rentals has locations in San Diego, Chula Vista, Escondido, Lakeside, Oceanside, and several locations in Hawaii and Guam. Hawthorne Rentals offers the best selection of late-model, low-hour Cat and Allied brand equipment, along with power generation systems. With the new Cat Rental Store Customer Portal, you can identify available rental equipment, obtain pricing information, and get live updates all in one convenient place. Hawthorne Rentals Provides Multiple Machines to ACCO on Warehouse Distribution Project
Completes Wet Utility Construction at Warehouse Distribution Center in Otay Mesa
L-R: Trevor Kolocheski, Hawthorne Rentals, and Robb Mortimer, ACCO Engineered Systems with three of the many machines rented from Hawthorne Rentals for a warehouse project in Otay Mesa.
ACCO Engineered Systems (ACCO) has designed, installed and maintained hundreds of mechanical projects since its inception in 1934. ACCO is an employee-owned company dedicated to the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance and service of commercial and industrial HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, process piping, and building automation systems. ACCO also developed an underground construction division in 2018. Robb Mortimer has many years of 24
experience in underground work, and he joined the ACCO team 3 ½ years ago to help start and grow the underground division. Robb Mortimer (Mortimer) officially serves as a superintendent within the site utilities underground division. Mortimer has been there from the beginning to help grow the underground division from a three-person crew to more than 35 today. "We have been busy within our underground division on several commercial warehouse

projects. We are also doing a lot of wet utility work on college campuses, churches, and recently an underground job for a juvenile justice center," says Mortimer. "I have personally been working on this particular 5-story 3-million square foot warehouse distribution job in Otay Mesa for the past two years. We completed the wet utilities around a year and a half ago, including sewer, storm drain, fire, domestic water and gas. The { Continued on page 26 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

building is now in operation, but some of the county hydrology requirements were not met, and a change order was issued. The order called for the installation of more storm drain structures to include weir and orifice plates to some of the storm drain outfall sections. We are currently tying into some of the existing pipeline from the storm drain chamber systems that we installed earlier. This includes adding A4 concrete structures with orifices." Mortimer explains more of the details on the underground construction work on the warehouse distribution project. "We are working for Clayco, general contractor, and we came in right behind the grading crew in the second week of construction nearly two years back. We installed sewer lines and maintenance holes throughout the jobsite," says Mortimer. "Our crews placed pipeline up to 48 inches in diameter, and as deep as 22 feet. We also constructed massive underground storm chamber systems. These are 20 feet deep domes used for underground rainwater runoff storage." Mortimer says that these structures are constructed with a 30-millimeter liner that is buried below 6,000 tons of ¾" rock. These 80" plastic domes create a void in the earth to store rainwater. Filter boxes are also installed to treat the water before releasing it to city sewer lines. "We went from dirt field to an operational building in just one 26
year. ACCO performed all of the underground work and finished on time during COVID-19," continues Mortimer. "At the height of construction, there were five to six hundred workers onsite. COVID-19 hit us in the middle of construction, but we were ready. Our general contractor, Clayco, had 30-foot office trailers and five registered nurses onsite daily. Everyone was temperature checked as they entered the building or jobsite, and every crew member was tested for COVID-19 twice a week." Mortimer points out that ACCO is also performing the underground work for another warehouse distribution center across the street with Clayco, general contractor. "The work across the street is pretty much the same as what we did on the first building, just on a slightly smaller scale," says Mortimer The distribution company should be able to occupy the building within the next month." ACCO rented several machines from Hawthorne Rentals to complete both projects. "We had five to six excavators working most of the time on these projects, in addition we had Cat 966 and 950M wheel loaders with multiple buckets, compaction wheels and forks. We also rented Cat mini excavators and Cat skids steer loaders for grinding asphalt at the street tie-in sections. We even rented four personnel carts to move more efficiently throughout the jobsite. I have been renting equipment and tools from
REN TAL EQU I P MENT / 2 0 2 2
Hawthorne Rentals for more than a year now, and we have built a great partnership in that short time," says Mortimer. "One of my roles with ACCO is also to set up and organize equipment and operators for the plumbing and HVAC side of our business. So, I also rely on Hawthorne Rentals for compact machines for that side of the business." Trevor Kolocheski is ACCO and Robb Mortimer's rental sales representative from Hawthorne Rentals. "Trevor has been there for us from the very beginning, and Hawthorne Rentals has been nothing short of outstanding. I have broken hydraulic hoses or had tires fail and had Hawthorne Rentals' technicians onsite within an hour. When one of our excavators had onboard computer issues, Hawthorne swapped out the machine without any questions," says Mortimer. "There are so many other examples of the incredible service we have received from Hawthorne Rentals. Like when we worked in Riverside and used another bare rental equipment company. The machine in question went down, and they could not get anyone out to service the unit. We were working out in the street and needed a machine right away to get things wrapped up. I called Trevor, and he was able to get me a replacement machine right away." ACCO has experienced tremendous growth within its underground division over the past 3 ½ years. "We started out renting C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

everything but have now purchased a Cat track skid steer and a rubber-tired skid steer from Hawthorne Cat," says Mortimer. "We will continue to slowly add more Cat machines to our fleet, beginning with an excavator, wheel loader and another skid steer loader. Ideally and more specifically, we will add a Cat 308 CR mini excavator, which I can keep busy every single day. We also have our eyes on a Cat 950M wheel loader and another Cat 259 compact track loader. Another important must-have piece of machinery would be a Cat 320 excavator for greater digging depth and breakout force. The 320 is versatile and can easily dig 15-foot-deep fire and water lines. Every job requires different sizes and configurations of machines, and that is why rental will always play a major role in our bidding and construction strategies. With Hawthorne Rentals by our side, we can swap out machines as needed. It is all about inventory, versatility, price, service and availability. Hawthorne Rentals checks all the boxes, and we are CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M
fortunate to have them as one of our approved vendor partners." ACCO is also on several other significant projects throughout California and beyond. One of these jobs is located at Southwestern College where ACCO is doing underground work for the construction of a new warehouse on campus. "We are doing all of the wet utilities for this project and have been onsite for around four months. The work includes domestic water tie-ins and extensions. These needed to be tied into existing waterlines and brought down to the new warehouse building. Our crews are also relocating fire hydrants due to the widening of roads and relocation of driveway entrances," concludes Mortimer. "Additionally, we will tie into the existing fire system with backflows and post indicator fire risers. New sewer lines and maintenance holes will also be tied into the existing campus storm drain on the main road. A StormTech vault and underground sewer system with an irrigation pump will also be
installed so that the facility can utilize the stormwater storage onsite. 22-inch to 36-inch pipe for the wet utilities and gas lines are being installed at a depth of 18 feet, requiring the use of steel shields and other shoring. We rented everything from Hawthorne Rentals, including smaller compact Cat machines for the plumbing crews, three different sized excavators, and a Cat 938 wheel loader for the trenching work. ACCO is licensed in California, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The company works within several industries, including commercial office space, biopharmaceutical R&E, semi-conductor and microelectronics facilities, medical/ health care centers, manufacturing plants, entertainment, retail, telecommunications, education, data centers and high-rise residential projects. Supplies Equipment to Transform Angel Stadium into Dirt Track for Supercross and Monster Jam Events By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor
W
hen the holidays are all wrapped up and the new year begins, Supercross and Monster Jam fans start making plans to go to Angel Stadium for the AMA Monster Energy Supercross series and Monster Jam event. This year’s events saw Supercross riders exhilarate huge crowds Jan. 8, Jan. 29 and Feb. 12. Then, Monster Jam’s massive trucks provided more action-packed family fun from Feb. 26 to 27. For many, this is the most anticipated event of the year, but did you ever wonder how they get the numerous track configurations built and changed so efficiently? It all starts and finishes using the best crews and equipment available. John Frazier has been the Heavy Rents Manager at Quinn Rental Services for around 10 years. He
Photos provided by Randy Mennenga, Dirt Wurx and Quinn Rental Services has been with Quinn Company for 20 years and working within the Cat network for the past 30 years. Frazier works with event promoter Feld Motor Sports to coordinate the various machines, attachments, and support equipment needed to construct the dirt track at Angel Stadium. “We have been working with Feld Motor Sports and their sports track coordinators for the past 20 years. Feld Motor Sports is the promoter, and they hired Just Pushing Dirt, Inc. to place the road base before the dirt was brought in, and then to remove the material and repair the field after the event,” says Frazier. “Then, Dirt Wurx comes in and builds the dirt tracks according to the design, plans and specifications. Dirt Wurx also provides the trained and talented heavy equipment operators and production staff, and Quinn Rental
Services provides the rental equipment.” Frazier further explains that approximately 500 truck loads or 7,500 cubic yards of dirt is then spread across the track area and leveled out. Some of the dirt spoils are dumped into giant piles or mounds that are later formed and shaped by Dirt Wurx crews to create whoops and ramps for the riders. Their crews build the track and also remain during the event to maintain and change configurations as needed for the AMA Monster Energy Supercross event. “Feld Motor Sports typically rents around 20 to 30 machines from Quinn Rental Services, including large loaders, excavators, dozers, compact track loaders, skip loaders and telehandlers. We also provide scissor lifts, generators, { Continued on page 30 }

and light towers for the pit parties and other events and festivities outside the stadium,” says Frazier. “The use of Cat rental equipment does not stop after the tracks are built. Machines like Cat telehandlers and Cat wheel loaders perform various tasks like cleaning up or reshaping the whoops and landing ramps in the Supercross event. During Monster Jam, Feld Motor Sports uses our rental machines to adjust the track between the racing, skill competition and freestyle events. When the Monster Trucks rollover, Feld Motor Sports crews enter the track with specialized wheel loaders equipped with hooks to get the trucks right side up again and back to the pits.” As a spectator at these two incredible annual events, you must ask yourself, “where does all that dirt come from, and where does it go when the competitions are over?” “The dirt is stored toward the back of stadium parking, adjacent to the freeway. K-rail is used, and the dirt from the event is poured within the confines of the K-rail. That dirt is then compacted to create a large, raised parking area, and asphalt shavings are 30
placed on top. That area is used for additional employee parking until needed again the following year,” says Frazier. “After the event, the infield grass areas are resodded, and everything is put back into place. You would never know the event ever happened.” Quinn Rental Services is the equipment supplier for these events and a sponsor. “We proudly sponsor and support the event year after year. I want to take a moment to thank everyone at Feld Motor Sports, Dirt Wurx, and Angel Stadium for being so great to work with on these fun events,” says Frazier. “I also want to recognize our Foothill Ranch Quinn Rental Services location that supplies all of the equipment and support for these events. There will always be issues throughout events like these, and our Foothill team always stands ready to resolve all challenges.” Randy Mennenga is one of the dozer operators working for Dirt Wurx for 17 weeks out of the year. Randy has been with Dirt Wurx since 2010 and also operates his own company, Mennenga Track Designs, throughout the remainder of the year. “At Dirt Wurx, we put

together Supercross tracks at stadiums across the country from the first weekend in Jan. to the first weekend in May. I utilized a brandnew Cat D3 dozer to shape and form the jumps and ramps at Angel Stadium,” says Mennenga. “We start early on a Tuesday, and dirt is brought in by three Cat 740 articulated haul trucks that spread the material throughout the designed track area. Next, we start laying out the lanes and placing one-foot grading stakes wherever a jump is supposed to be built,” says Mennenga. “The floor is pushed out and completed by noon Tuesday and the track is 100% complete by Thursday night. We then go to work installing pipe under the dirt for the power lines, TV wires, transponders, and other communication equipment. Friday is a press day. On race day, we go in early and water the track, and the riders walk and inspect the track and then do practice runs. Dirt Wurx
crews work to repair and regrade the track in-between practice runs. We tear it all down when the event is over and grade the dirt into windrows. Then the dump trucks come in a few hours later, and we load them with special excavators with modified smoothed edge buckets so as not to damage the stadium surface. When everything is complete, we all move on to the next event.” Mennenga started Mennenga Track Designs in 2002 and has been building private racetracks and test tracks ever since. “We design and build everything from motorcycle, bicycle and off-road vehicle tracks throughout the entire country,” says Mennenga. “When I am working locally, I use Quinn Rental Services exclusively. When I am out of state, I rent from the local Cat Rental Store in that particular state. I have a Cat Commercial account, so I can get the Cat equipment I need without

any fuss over credit, insuranceor any other red tape.” Mennenga also owns and operates his own small fleet of Cat machines. “I have a Cat D4K LGP crawler dozer and two Cat 259 Series 3 compact track loaders. I will always remain loyal to Cat and their awesome sales and rental stores throughout the country.” For more information on AMA Monster Energy Supercross series events, please visit supercrosslive.com.
