Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 Caleb Biffanti (915044) Dan Parker, Studio 7

Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

The diagram is a simplified organisational tool that displays a specific array of information and an exploration of ideas that coalesce into a unified reductive graphic. Where signs and symbols are direct representations of information, such as location and material qualities, the diagram is a highly contextual instrument which has its performative success dictated in its application and understanding. The diagram engages contextual understanding to create a dynamic capture of performance and orders spatial relationships.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

Precedent Analysis and Model Progression. Precedent Source: Halbe, Roland. 2009. Burnham Pavilion / Zaha Hadid Architects. Image. https://www.archdaily.com/33110/burnham-pavilion-zahahadid/57233509e58ecea67 b000001-burnham-pavilion-zaha-hadid-photo The structural lines of the pavilion were traced utilising the plan and elevation drawings. These lines were then spread to create the overal form, followed by creating rails and utlising the ‘sweep 2’ command to emulate the defining fabric. Extrapolations and projections were made to refine the final form.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture.

Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Hertzberger stresses the rigidity and inflexibility that is created when functionality overrules the opportunity for chance encounters and interactions. The Burnham Pavilion materialises an approach that allows for flexibility and the dynamic nature that is public interactions. Whilst not enabling a perceivably tactile relationship, the reductive white and a harmonic exchange of sunlight, instigated through the fabric, presents the opportunity for the pavilion to act as a facilitating backdrop for an array of visual stimulation and interaction.

Week Two

Isometric

Burnham Pavilion - Isometric The Burnham Pavilion, design by Zaha Hadid Architects in 2009, manifests parametric and forward thinking design that pushes conventional forms and constructability. The angulating and organic characteristics are key to this pavilions success as an attraction and spacial facilitator. This was at the forefront for this isometric representation. Where the skylights, and angulating fabric are focused on, and defined. These elements define movement, adhere to the circulatory movement of the space and faciliate a dynamic relationship with the public. The skylights and overall permeable form act as thresholds that enable a transition from day to night, and therefore a transition from an abstraction of curves to the dynamic symphony of lights and entertainment superimposed into the fabric.

Week Two Diagrams

Burnham Pavilion - Circulation

Burnham Pavilion - Threshold (Permeability of Light)

This diagram depicts the dynamic public circulation in relation to the site and within the structure, along with the static interaction that occurs at night.

This diagram highlights the permable nature of the skylights and fabric form in allowing the penetration of light to enable a transition in functionality and interaction.
