DepEd announces the “End-of-School Year Rites” for K-12 in S.Y. 2020-2021

The Department of Education (DepEd) plans to announce the conducting of the “End-of-School Year (EOSY) Rites” for Kindergarten, Grade 6, Grade 10, and Grade 12 pupils who met the curriculum requirements and including those pupils from school year 2019-2020 who passed portfolio assessment in the Alternative Learning System(ALS) Elementary and Junior High Level, also including those learners in the Senior High Level who met the requirements for the curriculum.

According to DepEd, the theme of the EOSY should focus in the “Kalidad ng Edukasyon Lalong Patatagin sa Gitna ng Pandemya” (Strengthening the Quality of Education in the Amidst of Pandemic)” in purpose of highlighting that in the amid of the challengers, the students' rights to have an education that

can cover all the knowledge a learner needs and safety from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Referring to the DepEd calendar, the School Year 2020-2021 shall end in July 10, 2021. However, within the week, July 12-16, 2021, schools and Community Learning Centers (CLCs) are given the authority to set the schedule for the conduction of the EOSY. On the other hand, an approved calendar for the school shall guide its respected private school for their school year.

Moreover, according to the memorandum, the schools and CLCs should observe the safety protocols given that the learner and the teacher’s health is the top priority, it is also not allowed for parents, student, and teachers to have a face to face ceremony.

Hence, the EOSY Rites might be conducted virtually, it is also to ensure the safety of all. The

schools and CLCs will conduct a short program that only the completers, their parents/guardians, the teachers, and the school administrators shall be the only ones present. The schools and the CLCs shall have the consent of the learners and the parents before broadcasting such programs.

As said in the memorandum, the multi-year implementing on the conduct of the K to12 Basic Education Program End-of-School Rites enclosed in DO 002, s. 2020 shall still be in force and working, except for the grant of the academic rewards, which should be demanded or specified in the separate issuance of awards and recognition.

Above all, it was also requested that if the memorandum was approved in the future, it must take effect immediately after the approval.

04 Feature As a student, I want to spread awareness that racism is not a joke. I have been judged by many people because of my colour. Sometimes I don't want to go outside because of people judging my skin colour. The time that I was judged by my classmate was when I was in grade 4.

They told me that "ba’t ang itim itim mo" "ang ganda mo pa naman kaso maitim kalang”. Because of that I always went to the bathroom to cry. I believe that would never happen to other people just because of their colour.

Since that day, I have never played outside and never stayed outside because I thought it would prevent me from having dark skin. At grade 6 I was starting to like my skin colour.

Halfway through 6th grade, my teacher talked about colorism and she taught me a lesson that it’s so beautiful to have morena skin. She too said that some American have wanted to acquire tan skin and it made me realise that it’s so beautiful to have this kind of skin.

After that happened, I just ignored all the chatter they say about my skin colour. I started to go outside again and just be happy. I’m not insecure about my skin colour anymore and I was just being myself again. I am confident about what I do now.

Ever since that happened, whenever I saw someone being racist it made me mad, sad at the same time because it’s sad to see people being racist. I just sometimes wish that racism is not a thing. Because of this people sometimes commit suicide or harm themselves in ways people could hardly imagine. People don’t know that they are harming them in any type of way. As a result, they harm their mental health because of this.

Colorism is not a thing to joke about and it never will be. I have read quotes about colorism and it just made me sad that they think that way. The quotes that I’ve read are “Nobody loves a black girl. Not even herself” by Nicole Dennis-Benn and “There is a lot of pressure on women to conform to a certain image shadeism itself is another manifestation of that” by Sharon Hurley Hall. Just by reading that, it made me believe that people are just too harsh to make them think or feel that way. I just want to say to her that it’s okay to be black and just love yourself. Don’t be so harsh to yourself and don’t mind what people

say about your skin and just be yourself. Even white or light skinned people are being judged just because their skin is white and so pale. I just want to ask people sometimes what kind of skin they want us to have.

Every type of skin color gets bashed and they just judge or hate on them.

It’s not right sometimes because if some rich people promote racism, they just ignore it like nothing happened. Some people are even bold enough to say colorism is not a joke but they are the ones who are being racist.

I just want to say that this endless unforgivable criticism will never stop, so let’s just ignore all those words they say about our skin colour and just mind our own business. Just be ourselves and don’t be affected by what they say because if we ignore it they will just think that it has no effect on us anymore. They will just stop and if they don’t want to stop then it’s their problem anymore. Just like what my mom said, just be yourself and chin up.

As my grandma said, “ wag mo sila pansin maganda ka, maganda yang balat na. Wag mo ipakita sa kanila na naapektuhan ka”. I’m not gonna forget her words, Instead I will bring them with me until I grow old. I just want people to know that everyone and every skin colou they have is very beautiful. New Hobby This Pandemic by Uniqa Cruz This pandemic for most of us has changed our lives in this new normal, especially the things we regularly do when staying at home. We have become more focused on our hobbies and talents and have thought of ways to improve them. This year, I discovered a new hobby, which is cosplaying.

Cosplay is the practice of dressing up as fictional characters especially in movies, cartoons, books, and video games. It is when you portray a character or describe the character you are cosplaying by wearing the same clothes, wearing a wig to have the same hair as them, and roleplaying especially in shows and videos.

Cosplays do not always have to be accurate nor “canon” (being accurate on the character), you can also put your creativity on it like accessorizing it (unless a traditional garment is used), adding themes, genderbending, and many more.

Starting this year (2021), after Christmas, I have discovered hobbies that fit me the best. Since I spent most of my time on social media during this pandemic, I have seen a lot of cosplayers especially on tiktok, which is the social media platform I mostly spend my free time with. And I was intrigued, interested and curious to do it. I tried to cosplay a few characters and I saw how this would improve my passion and creativity.

Since I have creativity in arts and colors, I am also good at dressing up and styling my clothes. Now that in cosplaying, I could get creative in wearing the costumes like picking the colors I could use on the character’s outfit, accessorizing, designing props, makeup, etc. If I do not have enough money to buy the material, I usually get creative by using the materials that I can easily find. For example, if I do not have enough money to buy wigs, I just make wigs using scratch (used bond papers) and colored papers. And if I do not have the exact clothes of the character, I just use the nearest colors

of the character’s clothes or make themes.

I mentioned how I also like going through the internet in my free time, so I find it a good idea to show my cosplays through the internet in creative ways. Some of my usual ways of expressing my cosplays through the internet are roleplaying, editing pictures of my cosplays, and making friends with other cosplayers online.

Within a few months, I have kept on developing and improving my talents in cosplaying and I have gotten a lot of followers on tiktok that reached above a thousand.

Besides my improvements and developments in cosplaying, I have also made a lot of friends through the internet. Most of the friends I met online are also cosplayers which also helped me to create inspiration. We help each other in our cosplays by sharing our creativity and passion to improve our talents. Few of my friends started commissioning and trading cosplay materials like wigs, costumes, accessories, props, etc. which can help us budget our money so we do not have to overspend on the materials when needing to buy one.

Throughout history, racism was a problem and still is a problem. From Black people to Asian people, racism is still their problem nowadays.

Society has adapted and accepted the differences of each race and has made them like humans again whereas they were the targets of discrimination and hate crimes.

Despite that, there are still naive people that are like some of our ancestors who were racist and discriminative against any of those who don’t share the same race.

Although we are still busy facing a global pandemic, the violence of other races toward Asians must never be tolerated. This acts as a threat to Asians and greatly practices racism.

They did not hear our calls, therefore we stayed silent amidst all the hate and discrimination we got for it was normalized. We failed to speak up for ourselves because we were scared to receive more hate.

We should create an act against discrimination on Asians because they are also humans just like all of us. Asians in the other parts of the world are being physically harassed, leading to Asian people taking their own lives to avoid discrimination. In the wake of the pandemic, additional nations have started to hate Asians.

It is said that Asians started the COVID-19, but little to none realize that other groups are now engaging in racism. No matter how many nations start a fight against Asians, it will never resolve the problem at hand. A virus is an illness that should be resolved, not a reason to cause discrimination. We should solve it and use it as a fact to intervene in others' dignity. Let us use our voice instead of hating to motivate our nation's sleeping leaders.

At weekdays, students spend hours upon hours doing homework every night and stressing out if they aren't able to finish it. The first form of homework was given as a punishment to the students that would act up in class. The teacher would give them extra school work to take home and do instead of being able to go home relax and have fun.

Although homework can help increase understanding of new topics, this kind of practice is not helping students because it can interfere with sleeping. In which this stresses kids and teenagers out and can cause depression, and even make

Yet overburdening students with homework should be avoided. When required, homework help can be leveraged student for better results. Homework has positive and even negative effects on the student. Don’t blame it on a victim’s body

“If only you didn’t wear that outfit this wouldn’t have happened”, “It was getting their attention”, “Who wouldn’t resist with that body of yours”, and so much more. In this instance, instead of the culprit being blamed, it was the victims who were framed. May it be children, men or women, many were victimized with rape cases— and even hate.

People who have been sexually harassed and assaulted, not only suffer from the trauma itself, but the injustice they get as well. Some cases of rape and sexual abuse get unnoticed too. Rapists tend to make excuses such as being drunk that time or that it was consensual; making the case invalid and not getting the justice it needs. Not only that, many victims actually had been disrespected, slut shamed, and seen as “dirty” by others due to what happened to them as well. They blame it on the victim’s clothing or body, or even mocked that they must have enjoyed it, and made jokes about it.

A bit-so-long-ago case that happened in Pakistan, September 2020, a woman was raped in front of her children and robbed by two men

while waiting for a motorway police at midnight when her car ran out of fuel.

However, a Lahore police chief said if only they could have chosen a safer road and checked her fuel tank, this would have been avoided.

Another is that when President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was said to made several rape jokes such as saying that as long as there are beautiful women, rapes will happen. He also joked about the gang rape of an Australian missionary, and even called his daughter, Sara Duterte, a “drama queen” when she confessed being a victim of sexual assault. The president’s spokesperson, Harry Roque, even said that we shouldn’t put much weight in his “jokes”.

There are more cases and situations that haven’t put justice into it. Cases that were cancelled, unfinished, unsolved.

Along with many victims being judged, joked, and weren’t taken seriously. We should not blame the one who shouldn’t be blamed. They never wanted for this to happen, and they didn’t know what to do and were lost. They felt the trauma of getting touched without consent and valid permission. Many were just minding

their own business too. Even with the socalled “mild and harmless” jokes about rape. I am a person who is a bit active with social media, and I would honestly have to see others making disgusting jokes about this and even sexualize the idea or the concept of rape.

We are not the victims here so we wouldn’t know what they’ve been through. The assailants aren’t the victims as well and they should be the one to blame. The victims are the ones who went through all of this and are rightful to get justice because of this. Sadly, most of these happenings are not resolved yet, and many others still have that toxic mindset of blaming the scarred.

Blindly Identifying Colors

"Even if you’re not a part of the said community, continue to speak up for them and never turn a blind eye whenever they are being discriminated."

The LGBTQ+ community. People that belong to the opposite of what society sets as the norm for sexuality and gender identity, the opposite of being “straight” and/or “cis”. Because they don’t fit into the norm, they have been put into different uncomfortable situations due to invalidation. Leading to multiple cases of abuse, mistreatment, disrespect, and other questionable actions.

Who are they to identify colors when they’re blind? Who are they to discriminate and judge the LGBTQ+ community when they have never made effort to educate themselves and make painful and harsh assumptions? There have been multiple cases/reports that surfaces the fact that the LGBTQ+ community have been mistreated and abused. An example would be Jennifer Laude’s case, wherein Jennifer Laude, a 26-year-old woman was killed by Joseph Scott Pemberton solely after he found out that Jennifer Laude was transgender and born a male.

There are more things that people have done to disrespect the LGBTQ+ community, like citing slurs, physically and mentally assaulting them, not respecting them, and more. Reasons why people may have done so is because of their religion or they really find it so disgusting to be out of society’s norm.

Being a part of the community gets often mistaken as a phase or an identity crisis because they don’t believe that they will continue be a part of the community for a long time. What they don’t know is that these actions are found very offensive to the said community as this subconsciously shows that they are not ready or they refuse to accept who you like and

Another way of disrespecting the LGBTQ+ community is misusing their pronouns. It may look like a harmless action to other people, but this also shows disrespect since this is also a part of accepting their gender identity and/or sexuality since we mostly use these phrases to call them or refer to them in any way. Pronouns come in all shapes and forms. Some of the known pronouns are She/Her, He/Him and They/Them.

There are also neo pronouns in which people can use to express themselves better and feel more validated. Examples of neo pronouns are Doll/Dollself, Bun/Bunself, Vamp/Vampself, Xe/Xem and more. If people feel comfortable enough, they can also use any pronouns as they can get the best of all worlds. An action that can be used when not sure of their pronouns are using they/them pronouns, but if after knowing their pronouns and still using they/them pronouns can also be disrespectful depending on what they are comfortable being called as.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I identify as a cis female who is pansexual that uses any pronouns. I also have my own experiences of invalidation by my mother that couldn’t accept my sexuality as she believed I was only experiencing an identity crisis. She

was also very religious as to add a reason on refusing to accept who I am and what my sexuality is. Having experienced that, I was traumatized and I badly wanted to change myself but as we know, our sexuality and who we like aren’t a choice.

I struggled and was constantly finding a way to cope, so I continued to write about my feelings, leading me to finding an inspiration for this opinion article.

There are multiple ways to respect a member of the LGBTQ+ community, that is why we must educate ourselves and not turn against the aforementioned community because we refuse to be proven wrong. Even if you’re not a part of the said community, continue to speak up for them and never turn a blind eye whenever they are being discriminated.

We must also validate their sexuality whatever it may be and properly differentiate and identify them from one another and never make degrading assumptions. After all, we can never identify colors when we’re blind, can we?

The Philippines received its first vaccine lastMarch 1st, 2021. As of now, the country has started distributing vaccines to its citizens. Now, some suggest that the government should implement a “vaccine pass system” to let the vaccinated of the Covid vaccine access the indoor dining and some establishments.

In short, if you do not have a vaccine you will experience some discrimination if you go out. People wouldn't want that so they will willingly take or be forced to take the vaccine.

Based on GMA News’ survey, almost 61% of Filipinos didn’t want to get vaccinated.

Gina Adoro, a sari-sari store owner in Marikina Citysaid on March 8, 2021, that she will not get the vaccine because it is shady. I told her about the “vaccinepass system” and she said “Eh kung ganon din naman pala edi magpapabakuna nalang ako, libre naman bakuna satin (Marikina) eh [If that’s the case, I will just get the vaccine, since it is free in our place (Marikina)]”.

786,528 people have completed the 2 doses of vaccine in the Philippines. It is a very small percentage compared to the number of citizens of the country.

The system will increase the number of people thatwill get the vaccine and the government will encourage people easily

In some countries, they have what is called the Vaccine Passports. Some have apps. A website I have read states that getting the vaccine is now a status symbol.

As of May 21, 2021, 19 763 people died because ofCOVID-19 in the Philippines. If you have the vaccine, it will prevent you from having a severe case so it will help you from not dying. The vaccine will protect your body from CoVid. Also, one of the advantages of getting the vaccine is you can do thingsyou are unable to do during the lockdown (only if you are fully vaccinated). You can gather with people who are also fully vaccinated.

Allowing the “Vaccine Pass System'' will make people want to get the vaccine because it will give them some advantages. Such as they are allowed to go in side establishments, unlike nonvaccinated ones that have limited places to go. Non-vaccinated people will maybe be able to go outside their houses but not inside malls, restaurants, etc.

HONG KONG, CHINA—As Italy was off to a great start on securing their victory, China snatches the crown, completely changed the game to their favor and crushed Italy’s chances of winning at match point on the 5th set, 15 – 13 and was pronounced triumphant in Women’s VNL 2019.

Using their wits and going all out, Italy easily won the 1st and 2nd set.

China knew it wasn’t going to be very easy for them, though they still had something up their sleeve.

"It was a wonderful match. In the first two sets, we did not perform well in the first pass and blocking.

However, starting from the third set, we had better reception. Italy is a strong team, we will go back and reflect in order to improve ourselves. Lastly, I would like to thank the fans from Hong Kong for their encouragement and support."

Lakers overwhelm Miami Heat and emerged victorious: October 12, 2020 by Rafael Gutierrez

LeBron James and the Lakers destroyed the Miami Heat in Game 6 for the championship title last night, with a score of 106-93. LeBron scores 28 points for the team, with Anthony Davis and Rajon Rondo with 19 points each. For the opposing team, Jimmy Butler gets 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists.

In the first quarter, the Lakers were able to secure the tip-off. The first quarter was nothing much except an exchange of shots and turnovers, making sure that the opponent does not get a big lead.

However, this routine changed in the second quarter. The Lakers were able to get a 10-point lead. The situation only got worse for the Miami Heat, as they were losing on a 30-point lead by the Lakers. Quarter 3 would only be the same for them. The Lakers were able to get a 30 plus point lead against Miami and all hope was lost for them.

Miami would get scores from time to time, yet they could not clear the 30 point gap with the Lakers. The next and last quarter was still no different from the previous quarters. The Lakers were even able to achieve a 35-point lead. Though both teams had given all their efforts to triumph against the other, The Lakers had won with the score of 106 to 93. With the victory, the Lakers achieved their 17th championship, tying with the Celtics for the most championships in NBA history.

The first quarter was the most decisive moment in the game, yet the Lakers still pulled off the win against Miami Heat. Both teams showed sportsmanship even in the end, and that’s what professionals should do.

Sportsmanship has an important place in sports and that is what makes sports what it is today.

With his agility and impactful strikes, the eight-time Wimbleon champion Roger Federer smashed Rafael Nadal in the Wimbleon 2019 semi-finals, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday, the 12th day of July 2019.

As the two players exchanged powerful smashes on the court, the tension in the game increased, but Federer still won the opening game by getting the first point. In spite of Federer’s dominance in the first set, Nadal still tried to get on the court with powerful smashes that Federer couldn’t reach.

As others say, hard work will not betray you and Nadal won the second set. There was a time

once when the heat of the game reached its peak, and when both players were fighting to score, it came to a point when they had to fight it out in the net for the score that they desired.

There was no problem in the fourth set until the tennis ball was high. The game became more interesting with the two players exchanging strikes from a long distance.

In the final set, they got 3 deuces, but in this deuce, Nadal got 4, Federer got 5, and it was really close.

However, things changed when they swapped strikes until Federer's shots became too powerful to the point they passed the main court
