Ew ! Pr oblem at ic: Th e Can cel Cu lt u r e By: Kirsten Shae Rosos

The media has evolved so much, and we can?t deny that it?s a good thing, but as days go by, we start to get too focused on media that we don?t realize that we start getting into someone?s own business and start getting so toxic. Cancel culture. Is that familiar to you? It probably is, but what is canceling culture anyway, and why are people so into it. We all know that COVID-19?s quarantine had sent us to so much boredom. Every day, scrolling through your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feed. But, suddenly, your favorite celebrity does something problematic and offending. Many people had started throwing hate at him/ her, and now you?re stuck. You knew that this celebrity did something wrong, but you can?t bear the hostility that this person started getting. Then there comes the cancel culture. People start boycotting this celebrity?s events just because of that one problematic mistake, and now it all brings his/ her career down. They say that this culture was made for a certain person to learn and not repeat the same mistake. The approaches and the goals were very promising, but people have mixed reactions to them. Cancel culture is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of

social or professional circles ? either online on social media, in the real world, or both. It?s a way for people to call out someone who has done something insensitive like being racist, colorist, fatphobic, etcetera. People can?t tell if this method is effective, but like normal, it has its pros and cons. One of the positive effects of this method is people learning their own mistakes. We can?t avoid making mistakes, but it?s better for us to get called out and learn instead of making the same mistake again. This is good, especially to those people who are sensitive and easily offended with their races, insecurities, and other things being joked about. Another positive effect is having to let other people know that these kinds of actions are offensive. Once other people start to notice this issue, they might take note and realize that they have been doing something wrong Cancel culture also has its dark downsides. One of them is people's mental health getting severely affected. We've all done something problematic in our lives sometimes. And we also know that the media is sometimes very harsh, and people have different approaches to your mistakes. It?s all about educating, but sometimes, people start getting too far and

start with bullying until their mental health gets affected and damaged, causing depression and anxiety to the person who made a mistake.

Additionally, people will also start taking advantage of this cancel culture. For example, with the overboard calling out, they might sometimes be too overreacting and overboard with the so-called ?problematic? thing you did when it?s actually not really problematic. They overreact because they were used to people having problematic mistakes, which make them think that everything is now incorrect, sensitive, and problematic. Cancel culture, in general, is not perfect. It has its good effects and bad effects, but what?s important is that we focus on what this method?s goal is in the first place, educating and calling out. But, keep in mind that we should not be carried away by our hatred and proceed to bully and damage someone?s mental health because of that one mistake he or she committed. Just remember that people aren?t perfect. We can not avoid mistakes. We might be offended by someone?s remarks, words, or actions, but we are not in the position to bully them, mock them and affect their mental health.

Like the Black Lives Matter movement or BLM, Asians also started their own movement on proving their rights and protecting themselves from the racism that had been happening. There had been several attacks that had been happening against Asians. Mostly in Western countries, where discrimination against Asians commonly occurs. During the pandemic, hate crimes and violence against Asians have increased. A national report from Stop Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Hate recorded that at least 3,795 incidents were reported approximately a year throughout the pandemic, from March 19, 2020, to February 28, 2021. Asians and people of Asian descent have been called slurs, kicked, beaten, and spit on, especially when it was informed that the coronavirus originated from Wuhan, China, blaming Asians for spreading the virus. Reiterating the former U.S. president, Donald Trump, who mentioned the virus as the ?Kung Flu,? or the ?China Virus,? or as the ?Asian Virus.? Asians are also receiving hate through social media, harassing them by spamming their phones with messages of slurs and threats. A survey conducted by an anti-hate group

Cartoon by: Edrianne Gomez

Anti-Defamation League found that out of the 2, 250 people surveyed, Asian-American respondents have experienced the largest single year-over-year rise in severe online harassment in comparison to other groups, with 17% reporting it this year compared to 11% last year. Due to stereotypes like the term ?model minority,? the perception that a minority group whose members achieve a higher degree of socioeconomic success than average, that Asian people are more intelligent or end up wealthier, racial violence against Asians frequently gets overlooked. This false idea erases individuality and makes other people see all Asians as the same. Not all Asians have the lifestyles shown in movies like ?Crazy Rich Asians,? and not all Asian children are prodigies.

Several celebrities had said their stands and opinions on this issue like Steph Curry who made custom-made ?Bruce Lee shoes?to spread awareness. The Korean boyband, BTS, made a statement about discrimination against Asians and even Sandra Oh also spoke out. You too can help stop Asian hate and spread awareness by reporting and speaking out if you witness a hate crime, and checking in with your Asian peers. This whole issue has brought so many changes to other people's mindsets. It is only right that Asians make a stand to prove that they are people too and that they deserve to be treated equally as the other races, after all, God has made us all equally no matter what race, gender, or age we are. All lives matter.

St r u ggl es of St u den t s i n t h e Pan dem i c Being a child and studying hard every day to achieve your dreams wasn?t easy, to begin with. However, the ongoing pandemic further complicates things, especially for students. Students struggle with internet connection, shortage of money, the virus itself, and the pressure of completing multiple things in a short time frame. These factors can cause many students to be more pressured and stressed. Articles show that during the start of classes, a lot of online classes were disturbed due to the low connection. People need to understand why some students are not able to do their work, especially if they have a valid reason for slow internet speed. Moreover, we can also help fasten our internet speed by building up and speeding our internet rate.

For many months, activists across the world have been rallying against wearing masks, curfews, lockdowns, and more. But, as these guidelines became an increasingly routine part of people?s lives, some of these protesters shifted their focus to the coronavirus vaccines. With the coronavirus vaccine rollout, many people have made claims and accusations against it. For instance, the media has claimed that the vaccine will somehow change your DNA or contain a trackable microchip. Anti-vaccination protests have also begun in many countries.

Jobs are harder to find nowadays due to the pandemic. And with the new school year, there can be problems regarding their necessities as a student. Families struggle to comply with their needs, especially if they have a child who is studying. We can help them out by giving out school supplies to the learners and help them to learn and accomplish their tasks, handing out these things will also reduce the expenses of one family and focus on other things. And so students can study and have a future for themselves. Due to the rapid spread of the virus, students feared being exposed or catching it. We need to face this problem immediately and don?t think of it as some small problem. Getting everyone tested and vaccinated and following safety protocols can help avoid extending the pandemic.

The amount of schoolwork given to students doesn't make things easy for them. It is also said that the amount of workload given to students increases students' stress and separation from schools. Students also face personal problems and might not have enough time to finish the workload given to them. Studies also show that students' mental health has taken a toll due to online learning and its struggles. Teaching lessons in an enjoyable way can help students accomplish work and somehow cope with these issues rather than pressuring them to do all the work that is too much for them to handle. I believe that everyone is struggling during these times. A lot has happened to everyone. If we take a stand and finish one problem after the other, maybe we can end this once and for all, not only for the students but for everyone.

Wh y Tak e t h e Cov i d Vacci n e In Australia, anti-vaccination protesters chant ?My body, my choice,? and in California, USA, about 50 protesters were seen carrying signs reading ?Don't be a lab rat,? and ?Covid = Scam,? interrupting a mass vaccination spot that provides about 6,120 shots every day. Even before the pandemic, the World Health Organization acknowledged that vaccine hesitancy ? the refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines ? is one of the top 10

threats to global health in 2019. These dreams of returning to a normal life are tempered by the uneasiness of how the coronavirus vaccines were quickly developed. But these vaccines are not completely brand new. The research for these vaccines started years ago for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in 2013, which are two other coronaviruses that threatened to create a global pandemic.

It is important to get the coronavirus vaccine as it will help keep you from getting the coronavirus. ?All COVID-19 vaccines that are in development are being carefully evaluated in clinical trials and will be authorized or approved only if they make it substantially less likely you will get COVID-19,? said by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The coronavirus vaccination is also an important tool to help stop the pandemic. Though safety protocols can help reduce the chances of spreading the virus, these measures are not enough. Evidence shows that people who are fully vaccinated have fewer

chances to be infected without displaying symptoms, otherwise known as asymptomatic infection, and are less likely to spread the virus that causes the coronavirus to others, the CDC informed.

These include pain, redness, itching or swelling at the injection site , fever, weakness or fatigue, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, or nausea. These are signs that the vaccine is working.

Is the vaccine safe? The Food and Drug Administration has authorized these coronavirus vaccine brands: BioNTech, Pfizer, CoronaVac, Covaxin, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Sputnik V. This means that these vaccines were not science experiments that were made by beginner scientists in school. Based on the Department of Health's website, the vaccine can come with possible side effects.

Getting the vaccine gets the world one step closer to eradicating the coronavirus and getting out of quarantine. And, even if you got vaccinated, it is still vital to follow safety guidelines. But before taking the vaccine, it is essential to inform yourselves of the side effects; do not believe the rumors and accusations on the internet. If needed, you can research more about the vaccines on verified websites.

Sav e Li f e, Sav e An i m al s: Use Cr u el t y Fr ee Pr odu ct s Animals are just like humans who need to be cherished and loved. They have lives that also matter not just in the environment but to the whole universe. Society will not be called as it is without organisms that would support it. Infections and pain, suffering, and death are important things that happen to animals that we humans in this world should be aware of.

When you hear animal testing and cruelty-free products said, what comes to mind? Animal testing is a way of trying products for a given type of animal. Its purpose is to ensure the safety of consumers regarding medicinal or cosmetic products, food additives, etc. This may be a good way to maintain and give the best service for consumers related to health but, experiments done by people should also be seen as a debatable

situation to be discussed by individuals with a high position in taking care of our beautiful creatures.

According to Cruelty-Free International, the animals that are mostly used for testing cosmetic products are rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and dogs. The process of testing the products on the animal is by eating, inhaling, or rubbing it on its shaved skin. There is time given for testing, like 28 or 90 days for dogs, rabbits, and rats. After testing, these animals are then killed. Half a million animals are used for testing cosmetic products, according to the same source.

As stated in the PETA organization, animals that are being tested can result in severe

abdominal pain, diarrhea, convulsions, seizures, paralysis, or bleeding from the nose, mouth, or genitals. If this happens, animals die immediately or are killed right away. PETA also said it is evident that animal testing cannot predict the outcome in humans. In some possibilities, animals can be re-used for subsequent experiments, according to Humane Society International.

This kind of ensuring the safety of humans should stop. Yes, humans are needed in this world. But are animals not needed to survive in our environment? With this kind of treatment to animals, people are just abusing their rights as animals. The pain and suffering they are going through are enough for this kind of policy to stop. One day, there might be no animals left for other future generations. Now that it is still early, we have time to change. Let us look for the other side of this world where no one is being hurt, and all creatures, including humans and animals, can find peace and a safe place to live.

Th e Depl et i on of t h e Ozon e Lay er By: Ashley Mae Diaz

The ozone layer plays one of the most important parts in our survival because it protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun which can kill plants and planktons that serve as food for most of the ocean life.

Now, this part of our atmosphere is slowly depleting as shown by the sun?s brightness, humidity and the climate change. According to NASA, the sun's powerful UV rays will sterilize the Earth's surface if there is no ozone layer. This can cause penetration of organisms' protective layers, such as skin, and damage DNA molecules in plants and animals.

If this continues it will increase the amount of UHB that reaches the Earth's surface which causes non-melanoma skin cancer and plays a major role in malignant melanoma development. The depletion of the ozone layer causes many casualties that may affect all our lives, that?s why we need to change our ways to help prevent this from happening.

Ozone layer?s depletion is one topic that us humans should be aware of. What causes the depletion of our ozone layer? One main reason for this is the use of solvents, spray aerosols, refrigerators, air-conditioners, and more. The release of these products are specifically called Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs. The production of molecules of Chlorofluorocarbons in the

stratosphere is broken down by UV rays and releases chlorine atoms. These atoms give reaction to the ozone layer and result in its depletion. One more cause of ozone layer depletion that affects more than Chlorofluorocarbons does is unregulated rocket launching. It is about launching rockets from the planet Earth going up to space. Nitrogenous compounds are also one cause that affects ozone layer?s depletion such as NO2, NO,

refrain from further damaging the environment. Planting trees is also important because they absorb toxic chemicals through their stomata, or 'pores', effectively filtering these chemicals from the air. According to studies trees also mitigate the greenhouse gas effect by trapping heat, reducing ground-level ozone levels and releasing life-giving oxygen. That?s why if we can, join or launch an activity that implements tree planting or caring for trees.

Based on this criterion, in 2017, more than 90 percent of the world population was exposed to unhealthy air, because of this our ozone layer is getting destroyed. Air pollution is a serious problem because not a lot of people are aware of it and it is happening globally. If it is not accessed immediately it can cause major problems.

N20. And lastly is the natural causes. Natural processes like Sun-spots, stratospheric winds and volcanic eruption are some examples of these natural causes but these do not cause more than 1-2% of the ozone layer?s depletion.

Cleaning products contain a lot of contaminants that damage the ozone layer. That's why buying environmentally friendly products may help preserve the environment like natural cleaning products. We can also buy reusable products to

As the effects of the depletion was said, we should now take action to avoid what causes the depletion of our ozone layer. We should make our move now that it is early rather than later when it is too late. Obeying the rules about taking care of our environment and reminding people to do so is just one and simple way to show our care about our planet. Using eco-friendly products like wooden made products is also one way to show our concern about the brighter future for our planet Earth.
