All year long, the staff at Calico Gals are making samples and models to show in the store. What do we do with all of those things? Some we keep, some we give and some we sell! Stop in on Thanksgiving weekend to shop the Sample Sale. Perfect time to pick up a handmade gift! A portion of each sale goes to charity.

You are invited to an afternoon event at The Calvary Club in Manlius, NY as we welcome two very special local quilters. Mary O’Keefe and Joan Ford have each made their mark in quilting and we are honored to have them share their stories and present their quilts in a classic bed-turning format. Be prepared to be amazed by their workmanship! Your ticket includes a delicious refreshment buffet of fall cobblers prepared by the country club chefs. Invite your non-quilting friends too! This overview covers the step-by-step process, from selecting a quilting design to the first quilting stitches. You will learn how to resize and apply designs, choose batting and backings, baste quilt tops, and all about threads, needles and tension. Come see how the HQ Sweet Sixteen will solve those problems and help you finish quilts of any size! ANY WAY YOU STRIPE IT With Karen Cross, Tuesdays, Nov 7 and Nov 21, 1:30-3:30pm or 5:30-7:30pm. Willmington Jewel Strip Packs work great for this quilt or any jellyroll will do. The fun part of this class is deciding which of the 3 layouts you will use (or create your own) and then watch the magic as it comes to life when you “stripe your colors together”. Fee: $30

RETREAT BAG With Kathy Barden, Thursday, Oct 19, 12:30-4pm OR Sunday, Oct 29, 12-3:30pm The genius of this simple zipper pouch and the larger bag can be found in the cleverly designed addition of wire frames and the use of fusible interfacing and fusible batting. The zipper application is fail proof - you’ll really have to work to goof it up! Either bag will make a great gift. Fee: $35

Beth packed the class CHOCK-FULL of techniques: Machine Applique, Dresden Plate, Piecing and YoYo Applique. Learn about choosing contrasting fabrics for the best design outcomes, rotary cutting and pressing basics, use of a new ruler and other tips to improve accuracy when constructing log cabin blocks.You won’t believe the variety of placement options that make unlimited design variations! Pam will show you three different machine techniques for this block. Bring enough fabric for a project of your choice (pictures available when you sign up). Create a pincushion (1 block), a pillow (9 blocks) or a table runner (16 blocks). LEARN YOUR MACHINE! GARDEN WALK With Nina Dukette, Oct 30, Nov 27, & Dec 18, 1-4pm New Garden Walk series beginning this fall! Join Nina for a wonderful 6 month series that’s all the buzz at Calico Gals. These three deep-dive classes will help you get to know your machine like nobody’s business. Learn the ins and out of bobbinwork, fringe foot, wing needle, couching, sewing in circles, twin needles, ruffler, mini piping and much more. There’s so many new things to learn - piecing is just the beginning. Fee: $70 (includes three months of classes) FREE MOTION MACHINE QUILTING SAMPLE BOOK With Candy Tucker, Saturdays: Oct 14 & 28, 1-3pm. This class will take the scary out of machine quilting! Learn to quilt using your walking foot and free motion foot. Make a sample book of quilting patterns so next time you are ready to make a quilt, simply open your sample book and choose from the quilting patterns you learned to do. With Candy’s encouragement, you will have fun and explore your inner artist. Be surprised at what you can do! Fee: $30 FAT QUARTER SPARKLETTES With Marilyn Sees, Sunday, Nov 5, 12:30-3:30pm Start with a stack of fat quarters and end up with a charming quilt of elongated stars. The unique star design is super-fun to create! The pattern, one of several goodies in the book Fat Quarter Style, has to be the best because it’s on the cover! S.O.S. SERGE ON SERGERS! With Melissa Morgante. Second Friday of the Month Oct 13, Nov 10, Dec 8, Jan 12, 10am - 3pm Use your serger to the max! Bring in any serger project and before you know it, you’ll have it finished. Any brand of serger is welcome - just be sure to clean, dust and thread it first. Serging goes smoother with sharp needles, so bring a few new ones with you. And don’t forget your project instructions. You’ll feel so good once you’ve completed your project! Fee: $15

This class teaches wonderful options for adding Cover Stitch and Chain Stitch to clothing or even quilting. FUN IN THE FALL! CHENILLE PANEL CLASS With Jenifer Cantrel Tuesday, Oct 3, 10:30-3:30pm This is very cool! Start with a favorite panel and turn it into a super-soft, super-cozy chenille quilt. Jen will take you step-bystep as you master this fun technique. This makes a fabulous kid quilt or baby gift. Fee: $35

Grab your favorite and turn it into a fast and fun quilt. Choose one or all of these jazzy patterns - all three are included in the book along with a bunch more. Get ahead of the holiday curve this year in this fun class from the Terry Atkinson book “Simple, Fun & Quickly Done”. Marcia and Melonie will demonstrate quick and easy projects each month, so you have plenty of gifts long before the snow falls. BLOCK OF THE MONTH IT’S NOT A SQUARE BOM with Melonie Unger, Saturdays, Oct 14, Nov 18, Dec 9, & Jan 13, 9-10am Join this club and receive the book: “The 4” x 5” Quilt Block Anthology: 182 Blocks for Reproduction Fabrics” by Carol Hopkins and Linda M. Koenig and 24 fat quarters in the first month! Starting in October, make 6 blocks/month for 12 months using reproduction shirtings from the 1800’s to complete a 57”x 78” quilt. The 4x5 inch block size makes for fun and unique piecing techniques. Club membership includes a once-a month Saturday morning meeting and 12 monthly block guides, fabric keys, block labels, and block-making guidelines. The last month includes all fabric for background, borders and binding. Fee: $25/ month. $50 registration fee includes first and last month MYSTICAL PRISM BOM WITH DARYL Breathtaking! The Mystical Prism Block-of-theMonth features twenty tonga batiks from deep blue to turquoise to purple. Resembling a kaleidoscope, the 102” square quilt uses traditional piecing with unique fabric color combinations. Beginning in January, create a pieced section each month for 12 months. KIM DIEHL BOM Coming January 2018 New from Kim Diehl - Pride and Joy - a 6 month Stitch Along Program! Beginning in January, receive the pattern and all fabrics to make this 64-inch square pieced quilt. Make a section each month using Kim’s beautiful Helping Hands collection of fabrics. But this die can do so much more than simply cut strips! Join the Go! Gals for this special all-day event and create a classic LoneStar wallhanging with sampler blocks in each corner. The cutting is super-simple (and fast) using your strip die. It’s a great way to use your stash to make something gorgeous! Fee: $50

HUGS - HELPING US GIVE SMILES With Melonie Unger Sunday, Nov 19, 12:30-3:30 We will be making placemats and pillowcases for two different agencies. The placemats will be for InterFaith Works and will go to folks that are shut ins and have their meals delivered to them.
