Component 2 Coursework Art Gallery

Calin Costea

Specification

Design Brief Taking into consideration the design of art gallery, it should contain the theme of freedom and limitation. The art gallery would contain the art based projects that will be open to any customer that wants to come in and visit. The overall design could obtain an “art” look that brings a new innovative way of expressing freedom but the interior design has to be kept simple to provide freedom to clients that are there to admire the work of art. I will include the limitation part through little hallways that block a certain views or make it difficult for the visitor to see thus making them engage more towards the hallway to come across the freedom part of architecture. I want to deliver the freedom aspect after the limitation because it provides a sign of comfort and relief. Keeping the interior design simple should also provide with a lot of space for the clients to walk around freely. I will also include an outdoor area for the art related sculptures to be shown, and in this way there is freedom provided by being in the outside area. The size of the architecture building should be fairly appropriate to the design of “art gallery”; thus no more than 3 story parking. Any creative imagination is allowed to theme the work of “freedom” and the design of “art gallery” to provide a pleasant experience for the clients.

Open interior spaces for the art projects to be viewed with ease by clients. Open outdoor area for art related projects such as “sculptures” Provide safety to any project in the gallery from weather or anything else. Toilets (male, female and disabled) Café/Canteen. Art gallery must provide a lot of art projects that might link to the theme of “freedom” It should fit more than 300 people, although the overall design should not be more than a 3 story building. Provide ergonomic services. Limited hallways

Freedom The theme is “freedom” and for that I need to focus on areas which provide as much freedom as possible for the accessible clients. I will go towards a route of using “movement and flow” as my inspiration in terms of work because I want to go for a different route that I have not taken before and I believe that delivering the best use of freedom it could be applied throughout movement and flow. I will look at the flow of buildings and how they are positioned. I can explore the theme of freedom by visiting different areas and admiring various exhibitions in London that could help me in terms of inspiration and I could manipulate it and apply my own vision towards it. When I think about freedom I can think about Galaxy SOHO and the open spaces it provides to match the theme of Beijing while delivering a fantastic architecture that could be seen as an inspiration for the theme of freedom.

Limitation To create perfect freedom there should be also limitation to it. By limiting certain areas the visitors get interested and want to find out more thus engaging more in the structure of the building. In this scenario I will limit certain areas of the building while providing freedom at the same time. This is only possible through keeping a balance between both limitation and freedom. For example, on certain hallways the vision would be limited thus making the visitor move in towards and when he/she enters the room they will come across a large spaced area where the freedom will be provided in that scenario. This would work by me recreating certain elements while applying my own architecture in the work.

Location For my location I chose to go with Hyde Park that is situated in Central London. The reason I went forward with this location is because I like the amount of space being provided in the area and it gives me the chance to develop ideas that fit the area. By scanning the area I was able to visualise certain areas where I could place my structures and that’s what I went with. I decided to start already with a few structure sketches to get a better idea and I included it on the picture below. Central London is a tourist area and they are extremely interested in art so I am certain that the art gallery would fit perfectly in the area.

Understanding Limitation and Freedom

The Jewish Museum located in Berlin it’s a museum that offers a lot of empty space both inside and that provides freedom for the people to look at the items being displayed. I’m choosing this as my inspiration to work on because I find the overall structure exciting and different which is what caught my attention, I want to provide the same attention to other people through my work as way, and in that way they could understand the freedom being displayed through the structure and interior design. By studying each floor carefully I will create my own design that will then be applied and will work effectively, that will deliver the same impact the Jewish Museum does.

Understanding Limitation and Freedom (Jewish Museum) (Berlin)

The interior design of the museum is what fascinates me as well, the reason to this is because it has open spaces which provide freedom for the public to view the exhibitions, I will incorporate this idea for my design since the theme is freedom as well. In order to do this I will use these images to explore the interior and I will create a few sketches to start off to match and create my own interior. By creating these sketches I was able to grasp a better understanding of an interior space under the theme of freedom and thanks to that it will help me when I’ll be creating my own design.

Understanding Limitation and Freedom (Tate Modern)

Architects

Pierre de Meuron

Jacques Herzog established Herzog & de Meuron with Pierre de Meuron in Basel in 1978. He studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) from 1970 to 1975 with Aldo Rossi and Dolf Schnebli. He was a visiting tutor at Cornell University, USA in 1983. With Pierre de Meuron, he is visiting professor at Harvard University, USA (1989 and since 1994), professor at ETH Zürich since 1999, and co-founder of ETH Studio Basel Contemporary City Institute since 2002. In 2001, he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize together with Pierre de Meuron. The work in which they created together ‘Tate modern’ is my great influence of the work that I have applied for my own design. Both of their work are splendid separated but when put together they have a creative mind that comes on top of anyone else.

IDEAS

Development

This is a design to demonstrate the development from the model I have created at the beginning. When I gathered materials I used them to create a several amount of models that I used to create a certain practical design. When I was drawing the sketches I needed to make sure that I can provide enough space both inside and outside for it to meet my design brief. The silhouettes that I drew I then had to change it due to them being too big thus making the building look smaller than it should be and I used digital silhouettes. The design of the structure is quite different and artistic thus creating an effect of art upon the construction of the building.

IDEAS

Development

By showing both sides of this idea I have portrayed a design in which the people could see. The design of this idea was inspired by various points and locations of Tate Modern when I went to visit it. Due to the abstract sharp turns of certain objects it gave me an idea to do the same for my own project. That is why for this idea I have included the same thing with the windows by making them have a sharp turn. Also I have included a lot of open areas outside for the visitors of the Art Gallery to feel the freedom experience by feeling the fresh air while viewing the art projects displayed outside. In addition there is a cafĂŠ that also delivers the same experience; with these ideas I want to keep limitation towards the interior design while the freedom aspect is more stuck to the outdoor area. However, not all interior design is focused on limitation but a balance of limitation and freedom.

IDEAS

Development

The design contains free elements drawing such as plastic layers that will come stuck to the first floor to cover some ground floor space and the reason to that it’s because the feeling of it, it will provide a freedom feeling that visitors would find satisfying. In addition, the limitation is being provided through the gaps in the window and the viewing area. Certain elements of the building are obstructed and it is done on purpose to deliver a balance of the theme. Last but least, the design also provided a lot of open space areas situated outside that will demonstrate art as well.

Final Idea

I started the project by working with foam board and I cut little pieces of it and stuck them together. Halfway through my process I realised that I had to be extremely precise and every small mistake would turn out to be into a big one that would make the design look overall bad. Certain examples of this was when I was cutting holes and it was too small; thus making the foam board break. Due to that I went on 2D design and I created my project and put it on the laser cutter. The reason I done this was because it was smoother, faster and it was extremely precise which is what I needed. It was risky to change the material halfway through the design but it was a risk that paid off. Due to the complication of the design, if I would’ve still went with the foam board it would’ve come out much worse.

The design was achieved through various trial and error and thanks to that I managed to achieve a final piece of project. The reason why I went for a model that includes a lot of open areas is because it should match the theme of freedom towards my galley. Also the theme of limitation is being provided through the windows, although there are a lot of windows, it is still fairly difficult sometimes to look through them, thus applying limitation towards the visitor on being able to see further. I applied these functions in order to match the theme.

The picture above demonstrates the bottom area of my art gallery and the demonstration of the positioned windows. The reason why my project contains a lot of windows and are located in oddly positions is due to my inspiration to ‘Tate modern’. The reason I used a lot of inspiration is because it helps me when I created my design and it has an aesthetic pleasant look due to it.

The material being used is a 3mm plywood which is covered in a wall effect that I printed out and stuck on the wood. The reason I done this was because I wanted for the design to have a nice colour to it rather than the plain wood colour. This adds a different perspective to the design because the colour matches with the theme and design of the windows and overall building. Also the reason I added a lot of trees and bushes around the design is because I wanted to provide a nature feeling to the model. The top section of the model is an open area for the visitors to observer sculptures and other art based projects. The reason to this is because I also wanted to provide a freedom aspect through

Evaluation At the start of my design, I was going for a completely different idea and I approached it with a way that was only complicating me; due to that I decided to slightly change my idea and methods that I was doing. For example changing my material from foam board to 3mm plywood and use a laser cutter for precise cuts was a smart save that helped me finalise the project. Also using hot glue gun, PVA and Adhesive spray to stick certain elements together helped me get attach the project together. For the windows I have used 3mm clear acrylic and I applied it to the places that I cut. I stuck the windows to the walls with hot glue gun at the start, however later on I realised that it was a bad idea due to the mess it was creating. So instead I went forward with the PVA that proved to be much cleaner, although a bit longer. For the open part of the building with the curved wall I used a open For the paper with the wall effects and water effects, I stuck them with Adhesive spray because It was the best choice, however sometimes it kept coming off so I had to use hot glue gun to make sure it didn’t come off. I applied a different use of material due to keep a variety and make the design look more aesthetically pleasing. I gained the inspiration through the ‘Tate modern’ and the architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. I understood the theme chosen and the building thanks to these architects. I feel like Jacques Herzog applied his knowledge of the way he positioned the windows and I took that as an inspiration. Pierre de Meuron helped me to create an odd structure that catches the human eye and attracts them towards the building. Certain elements are greatly inspire by both architects that are behind the inspiration that I used for my own work as well. Speaking of the practical side of the project; the building works, it functions in a way which an art gallery would function. What I mean by that is that it provides an open area with freedom for visitors to view art projects that they find interesting. However, at the same time I feel like certain elements are not placed in a way in which they should be or feel like they are out of place. For example, the top two floors of the project where it proved the open area for visitors to view the sculptures, I could’ve approached that with a different view. By that I meant that I could’ve added a roof on top or rather applied a different design to it rather than just triangles with long hallways. It may appeal that my project contains dark colours, I have done this with a purpose of the location that I have chosen, what I mean by this is that because it is located on an open field where it’s bright and colourful, it brings a great contrast of the project that brings a different view from it. This is my final project and evaluation that I have created throughout my work
