New Logo for Mid Murray Council ouncil is grateful to the many residents, business owners, volunteers, staff and other interested parties for providing their opinions on the three logo options put out to public consultation through newspaper advertisements, articles in newspapers, local newsletters and our website during May and June 2013.

We received 44 submissions on the proposed concepts. The Council at its meeting on 8th July 2013 considered all of the submissions and comments received. The new logo endorsed at this meeting is considered to be more representative of all towns and communities throughout the Council area and has a more contemporary look and feel.

The move comes after 15 years’ use of the pelican and hills logo. Council also saw this opportunity as timely, given the adoption of a new brand for South Australia

launched in March 2013. The preferred choice was the pictured logo with a working title of ‘Flow’, with 81% chosen via the online survey, and 89% vi a emai l ed comments.

The new logo was inspired by representation of our region’s unique selling point – the river. Other elements include the cliffs, nature in general and the region’s land and agriculture.

The colours of the logo are earthy and can be easily adapted to suit various scenes from various parts of the region. An example of how the logo can be used is pictured here in a banner design.

The new logo will be utilised on the website, in social media properties and other Council products. A small internal working party of Council staff has been established to ensure the roll out phase will be achieved at no cost. This means not all Mid Murray Council communications will bear the new logo immediately. The new logo will be used when stocks such as letterhead are replenished, and on other Council products when they require replacement (signs, flags, etc).

Therefore, a mix of the old and new logos will be seen for some time into the future.

Aminya Dear Editor, In the June issue Millie referred to benzodiazepines, dementia and the eerie hush of nursing homes she frequents.

As Aminya is Mannum’s main nursing home, it could be assumed it is one she visits. If so, she must be calling after midnight.

We visit Aminya at least fortnightly, and are always impressed with the level of caring and the friendly atmosphere. There are daily activities and events, and the staff go out of their way to ensure every resident can participate if they wish.

Medication and the type of care needed are reviewed regularly and compassionately.

On a visit in July, we were delighted to see everyone bopping along to 50s rock-and-roll as they waited for lunch in the dining room.

Even the most debilitated residents were nodding and joining in to Fats Domino. And that wasn’t an event, it was simply normal background activity.

Dementia is a cruel disease, with many stages. Some people go through a phase of violence, self harm and fr ig h t e n i n g h a l l u c i n a t i ons.

Medication can help calm them during this short time. It is not a kindness to withhold drugs and allow them to be terrified and cause injury to themselves and other residents.

Of course we should discuss any treatment or medication with professionals.

Consider Your Vote Dear Editor, In his letter in last month’s Mag, Mid Murray’s Mayor Dave ‘Its my turn’ Burgess supported his stance on the upcoming referendum by implying that anything but a ‘Yes’ vote will result in our region losing vital funding.

After attending the Mid Murray Council meeting on July 8th, I can inform you that ‘Roads to Recovery’, that he specifically quoted, is an ongoing program until 2019.

Considering this detail was available on the 8th, I assume the Mayor’s prior knowledge, and consider his letter to be nothing but fearmongering.

His self serving propaganda ended with “If you want ongoing Federal support for your road, park, library and community facilities, then I urge you to vote ‘Yes”.

I urge every concerned citizen to look into this further. This issue has already been voted on twice by the Australian people in prior referendums and the result was a resounding ‘No’, so why put it before us again?

I think the answer to that question is in the view put forward by one of the Councillors that ‘we should have permanent councillors’. Rather like

our highly paid State and Federal politicians I imagine. So who is a ‘Yes’ vote really serving?

Also on the agenda, among the many interesting and infuriating things mentioned, was the need to purchase a water licence to maintain the levels at the new ‘Mannum Waters Marina’ development. I don’t know about you, but I object to public money being used to subsidise private developments and am considering refusing to pay any subsequent rate increases.

Dear Editor, It would seem that the Local Govt.

Assoc. has been funded by S.A. Taxpayers (via councils) to the tune of $988,000 to promote a “yes” vote in the referendum on Council recognition (supported by our Mayor).

Surely Councils are not meant to be party political. There has not, however, been any information provided on the “no” position and any potential negative implications...

nyone who has had an association with Mannum Baptist Church is invited to join us as we celebrate our 125th year on Sunday 18th August 2013 at 10:30 am, with a shared lunch to follow.

On Sunday 19th August 1888, a group of believers met in the Mannum Institute and elected a committee to form a Baptists congregation. This led to the Rev. Silas Mead coming to Mannum on 30th September 1888 and forming the Baptist Church with 17 members.

During the ensuing 125 years, our church has faced

both boom and collapse. 36 people have filled the role of Pastor, with tenures ranging from 6 months to 11 years.

Mannum must be a good training ground as 10 of the Pastors have been students from

theological college.

Today we are regenerating and have a similar number of members to that original group that first met back in 1888.

We give grateful thanks to God for the blessings many people have received in this place and for the loyalty of those past and present who have given and are giving of their best to keep Mannum Baptist Church as a place of Worship and encouragement, to the glory of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Preserving Heritage Dear Editor, While Mid Murray Council spend up on the ‘Mannum Waters Marina’ project, sealing roads,beautifying the old tip site, etc. one of Mannum’s Prime Heritage sites still waits for much needed water management issues to be dealt with.

The magnificent ‘Randell House’ one of the ‘Jewels’ in the ‘Heritage Crown’ of Mannum is under threat of recurrent flooding and water damage due to the drainage situation on Cliff Street. This has been brought to the attention of the MMC repeatedly and what do they have to say? Tell someone who cares.

I care. Does anyone else? I cried the day Esmeralda was demolished and I think it is a dreadful shame that Council care so little about preserving what we have. How sad to watch the Institute sitting there unused, what magnificent potential wasted there. Heritage is more than a word in a promotional pamphlet, more than a drawcard for Tourism.

If issues of heritage preservation, ongoing drainage causingflooding or Council prioritising bother you, please let them know, otherwise council think we all agree with their decisons. I, and many others I know, don’t agree.

Volunteer of the Month ur Volunteer of the Month for July is Greg Frost. Greg has volunteered for Mid Murray Support Services for the past few years as home maintenance man and volunteer driver. Greg is a retired builder and, together with another valued volunteer Brian Lowrey, renovated and built our new office complex at 71 Randell Street. A couple of weeks ago Greg and his wife moved to Mt Barker to be closer to family but before leaving Greg donated a plentiful supply of building timber to the Mannum Community Men’s Shed.

Thanks for your service to the community Greg.

Keeping Up with Compliance It seems that every time I open a letter lately it’s from some Government Department or funding partner telling me that we have to have a new policy on this or a procedure on that to be “compliant”.

If we’re not “compliant” then we can’t apply for grants. If we don’t get grants we are not able to provide the many services we do throughout the Mid Murray Community. Seems to be a classic Catch 22!

We are very lucky at Mid Murray Support Services because we have two wonderful people who just love being compliant and can’t wait to write a new policy or procedure. They are Dee Waechter and Bev Forgan and we are really privileged to have them as part of our team, keeping us up-to-date and compliant with all of the latest government legislation.

On the first Tuesday of every month around 20 men will gather for a cooked breakfast at the River Bar in the Mannum Community Club. It’s been cold lately but the big gas heater (when it decides to work!) keeps us warm as the bacon, sausages, tomatoes and eggs sizzle away on the BBQ. The food is hot, the conversation and laughter strong, some of the jokes are unprintable but all enjoy the fellowship. Special thanks to Bill McGhie, Rob Dyer and Mike McDowell who help me get a hot breakfast on the table each month. Want to join us? 8:30 am at the River Bar (rear entrance). A gold coin donation gets you breakfast, toast, tea and coffee.

Hub Hold-up Interrupts Classes Work on the Mannum Community Hub (the old Mannum School) has been going flat out these past few weeks but, as with any project, there have been a couple of unforeseen problems and the completion date has been delayed.

This means that our Adult Community Education classes commencing on 12th August will be in a temporary place for a few weeks. At the time of writing this we are not sure where that place will be but the classes will still be happening, on schedule. Please phone us on 8569 2129 if you need more information.

Just makes the move to the Hub more anticipated and exciting!

A

t the 8th July meeting Mid Murray Council adopted the 2013/14 budget, which includes an average general rate revenue increase of 5.94%. However, not every household will pay this increase due to the valuation of many properties decreasing in the last 12 months.

Council has been subject to significant cost increases in electricity, water and particularly additional legislative requirements imposed by the State Government (new building truss inspection legislation, new Public Health Act responsibilities and requirements, financial management, asset management and governance legislative requirements). This is estimated to cost Council $200,000 (over 2% in rates). We are trying to maintain and upgrade our large road network, the second largest of a Council in South Australia.

The proposed budget for 2013/14is $22.2 million with an operating surplus of $118,019 and new loans of $1.7 million. An application will be made for funding for upgrade of boat ramps at Mannum and Caloote.

The budget provides for the continuation of a wide variety of services including: immunization, Healthy Communities and OPAL, youth services, senior citizens services, Home and Community Care, Mannum Leisure Centre, Mannum Caravan Park, Mannum Dock Museum,Visitor Information Centre, MorganMuseum, BlanchetownRural Transaction Centre, Community Health Centres at Swan Reach, Blanc h e t o w n a n d M or gan, community wastewater management

Mannum Rowing Club

ince the last report in May not a lot has happened as far as competition, which officially finished in April. It has however given time to do a repaint of the roof and maintenance on the boats, on which the variation in river levels has taken a toll with scratches and nicks.

On the bright side, having had an inspection with Mid-Murray Council who are looking at the overall upgrading of boat ramps, it may be that a floating launching pontoon may be incorporated with the speedboat ramp upgrade.This would certainly give more protection for the boats rather than the existing concrete ramp and make life easier for the Oldies launching and retrieving.

As for Premiership points, sadly we ended up the Bridesmaid in the State and to Murray Bridge in the Country. Apparently Sam Bormann came runner up in Coxwains award. Our Junior girls have really matured, now knowing what top level Schoolgirl competition is about. At the moment the girls are taking a bit of a break from training as a four, but still doing the odd double sculling. A few of the masters are still venturing out in the evenings and Sunday mornings. The days are starting to get longer but a few degrees warmer would be nice as well.

The AGM was held on Sunday 21st July with a good roll up and followed by a BBQ lunch. Dean Mobbs was re-elected President, Robin Bourne Vice President, Brian Bormann Secretary and Vicki Harding Treasurer. The Committee is Claire Banks, John Banks, Jenny Pfitzner, Chris Pfitzner, Brian Arthur and Phil Gebhardt from Adelaide as our Club Delegate for SA Rowing.

Long time Member and Barman Maurie Ryan has left us to move to Victoria to be closer to family.

Dean in his report spoke of finally been granted our outdoor licence extension (only taken 8 months) which will be a bonus for people to sit outside on the grassed area on summer evenings as well as a defined area for functions. The RSL have settled in nicely and overcome a few teething problems. He mentioned our Annual Regatta, which is always a favourite with most Clubs and praised highly by SA Rowing Officials. Anzac Day, by all reports from the RSL was one of the most successful, as was the Anzac Row from Mannum to Murray Bridge that morning. By the feedback it looks like being bigger next year with a little more direct marketing to Adelaide Rowing Clubs. Lastly he thanked the Volunteers who helped with fund raising and the Annual Regatta and looked forward for continued support.

The next Social event will probably be the Club’s official Opening of the Season, possibly in September, with a few scratch races and lunch.

We would still like to hear from anyone interested in Come and Try Rowing.

If you’re a parent and would like to have your child involved in a healthy, non contact sport, rowing is the way to go. You can even participate yourself, as do a few of the parents.

Better the power which can only come when one has no earthly power and is not a slave to its apparatus. Bryce Courtney called it the Power of One. Jesus came to this earth to live among humanity, on the bottom of the social heap with no reputation to lose. As Paul said, “He made himself of no reputation and took upon himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:7)

Dr Elizabeth Blackburn discovered an enzyme she and her team named ‘telomerase’. It rebuilds the tips of chromosomes,turning back the hands of the ticking clock. It is in all of the most crucial of our cells. Telomerase is genetically determined and if it is deficient, premature agingoccurs and earlier onset of disease and mortality.

South Australian Living Artists – Arnold Gallery 2nd to 25th August 2013 annum Dock Museum is hosting an art exhibition in the Arnold Gallery as part of this SALA Festival, which opened on the 2nd August. Entry is FREE, and the exhibition will be open during the Mannum Visitor Information Centre hours.

The artists participating in this year’s Festival are from our community, so you will know some of them. Come along and have a look, and support these cultural events! The works on exhibit are quite varied, and include works by two new

witching up to a lighter meal when the winter menu gets to be all about soups and stews can be a refreshing change. On that note, I developed a pasta recipe with Asian flavours, fresh green vegetables and soba noodles; it is nutritious enough for a complete meal or, using it as a side dish for fish, is a great way to enjoy this light and refreshing salad; a tasty way of getting more fresh vegetables into your daily diet.

Soba is the Japanese name for buckwheat, the main ingredient in soba noodles. They are thin noodles; most varieties at the supermarket generally contain some wheat flour.

Pure buckwheat flour noodles can be sourced and are usually a little more expensive. In Japan soba can refer to any thin noodle. Soba noodles are generally served either chilled with a dipping sauce, or in hot broth as a noodle soup. The following nutritional information was sourced from Wikipedia; 100 grams of soba yields 344 cal (1440 kJ) of energy.

Soba contains all eight essential amino acids, including lysine, which is lacking in wheat. Soba noodles also contain antioxidants, including rutin and quercetin, and essential nutrients including choline, thiamine and riboflavin.

I hope you enjoy this refreshing change as much as I did.

Angie’s Soba Noodle Salad 1 tsp salt

250g 2 tbsp 2 tbsp 1 tbsp ½ tsp 1

soba noodles light, low sodium soy sauce lime juice (lemon works too) light olive oil sesame seed oil chilli, finely chopped (more if you like it hot) 2cm fresh ginger, finely grated 2-3 spring onions, finely sliced ½ continental cucumber; halve it lengthways and thinly slice into ‘half moon’ shapes ¼ cup unsalted peanuts or cashews, coarsely chopped ¼ cup mint leaves, roughly chopped ¼ cup coriander leaves, roughly chopped 1. Bring a large pot of water to the boil, add salt and noodles. Cook until tender according to the instructions.

This usually takes about 3 minutes so keep your eye on them.

2. Drain and then rinse the cooked noodles under cold water (this is a necessary step when making a noodle or any pasta salad as it removes the starch form the outside) 3. In a small bowl whisk together the soy sauce, lime juice, olive oil, sesame seed oil, chilli and ginger until well combined.

4. In a large bowl place cooked noodles, cucumber, spring onion, nuts and herbs, toss to combine evenly and pour over well combined prepared dressing, toss to coat all ingredients. Garnish with extra fresh herbs and nuts.

Mannum Community Club Social Club News Views and Dos

i Everybody – The year is going so quickly don’t you agree? So far this year we have had great activities in the Social Club.

We held our first “Happy Hour” for the year in February, and a good night was had by all.

On St Patrick’s Day, there was a trip to a Winery then Lunch at the Hahndorf Old Mill with entertainment supplied by an Irish Band. From what I’ve been told a certain person (who willgo unnamed) was quite “merry” for the occasion, obviously enjoying him se lf immensely. The remainder of the Social Club who attended were very impressed with the day.

Then in April we again took the “Jester Cruise” with barbeque lunch (the meat was just superb), free food and free drinks (paid for by the Social Club) – we also played billiards and danced to the juke box. A great time was had by all.

In May we visited the Barossa Bierhaus for lunch, then on to Chateau Tanunda Winery.Everybody

said that it was great and that Chateau Tanunda was exceptional.

By the time this goes to print, we will have held our Christmas in July, on the evening of Saturday, 20th.

We have a Quiz Night coming up in August, Bowling Day in September and The Big Bend visit in October.

The dates are still to be finalised. Let Mark ‘Shorty’ Davis know if you are interested in any of these Functions.

We have had a good response to our call for new members, but we would like to see more of you. If you are keen to be a Social Club Member, you must firstly join the Mannum Community Club at a cost of $25.00 per annum each, then an extra $10.00 per annum each will make you a Member of the Social Club. Still Waters Fine Art Exhibition

T

he Arnold Gallery will be open during the SALA Festival hosting the ‘Still Waters Fine Art Exhibition’ as part of the State’s SALA (South Australian Living Artists) Festival – A Celebration of the Visual Arts.

Nine local artists will showcase their diverse works featuring paintings and sculptures, with inspirations from reflecting life on the water.

Exhibits will include a variety of materials including junk art, metal, wood and knitted copper wire and will feature a presentation of contemporary and traditional art.  Jill Allen – an impressionist and abstract artist using acrylics on various surfaces, has enjoyed many successful exhibitions of her works since the 1970s.  Roger Baker – recently returned to his roots of graphic arts and plate making as inspiration to his amazing lino cut prints. Roger also enjoys sculpting and using pastels.  Jane Bowring – has a background in contemporary jewellery and is known for her sculptural forms made of hand knitted copper and is inspired by the natural world.  Ashley Knott – a self-taught artist, loves to experiment with a

variety of mediums and textures. A great day for Ashley is when her art evokes emotions from its viewers  Sandie Kuehne – a recent move from her comfort zone of familiar, safe, traditional media to explore and experiment with alternative techniques and direction has been exhilarating for Sandie with rewarding results.  Caroline Lever-Flint – recently discovered encaustics (3000 year old art of painting with wax) and found the vibrant colours of the wax plus the fluid, abstract form of its application perfectly interprets her photography.  Steve Oatway – it’s been a wild ride for Steve from teaching junk art in Central Australia to exhibiting in New York City!  Barrie Walker – a self taught artist, has experimented with many mediums. His oils and pencil/ink drawings depict a great degree of detail and authenticity.  Joel Zimmerman – focuses on reclaimed materials and is inspired by giving “useless” items new life and meaning and experimenting with new materials and techniques.

A Spring in My Step

A

t around 9pm Antares (alpha Scorpii), brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, is directly overhead. Antares is a massive red supergiant with a diameter of approximately 420 of our suns and 2000 times more luminous. At nearly 380 light years away, it is often mistaken for the planet Mars leading to its name from a Greek phrase meaning Rival of Mars or Mars Like, due to its reddish colour.

Most of the planets are rising at this time in the morning and at some stage clash with the rising of the sun. A full moon of some splendour in the crisp evening air at present is worth watching on the eastern horizon just after 6pm, and progressively later through the month.

With new technology, light that is received from stars can tell us more about the universe and piece together a better picture without leaving the Earth, in some cases. Since the invention of the glass prism, study of the spectrum from starlight has opened up information about stars not possible in earlier times.

The intensity of light from stars has been examined in greater depth, focussing on the variation due to the planets orbiting around certain stars. Well over 300 exo-planets have been discovered so far using such methods.

The colour of the light in stellar spectrums tells us much about elements found in and on the surface of stars. The presence of gases like hydrogen and helium were found in the spectrums of stars very early on. Dark lines called Fraunhofer lines were discovered which gave a signature type marking for all stars indicating absorption of colours in the solar electromagnetic spectrum.

To improve the precision in measuring the distance to stars from Earth the parsec is used. Taking a reading of the angular distance of the star at one end of the earth’s orbit and another six months later gives a more refined measurement of the star’s distance. Within our galaxy distances are measured in kiloparsecs and outside the galaxy in megaparsecs.

Mid Murray Homes for the Aged – Aminya

O

n Friday 5th July 2013 Aminya received approval from the Australian Government for an additional 18 residential aged care places and a $3.985 million loan. The approval will result in Aminya expanding to 50 places, which will assist in meeting the need for more aged care services in the Mid Murray Council area.

The Board expects to appoint an architect by early August so that an early start can be made with the de taile d plannin g p r o c e ss.

Consultation with residents, their families and the broader community are being scheduled.

The preliminary planning undertaken as part of the application process included a focus on increased communal facilities and a dementia specific area. An in-house catering service is also planned to enable greater flexibility in the provision of meals and dietary needs.

Planningfor the expansion has been a lengthy process with a previous application in 2011 not being successful. The withdrawal in 2012 of an approval to a separate provider which had held provisional approval Page 8

for 50 beds in Mannum was taken into account in the application.

The project will have benefits for current and future residents as well as for the district. Additional employment opportunities will arise on completion of the project with about ten full time equivalent positions being created.

Preliminar y planning has commenced to identify revised staffing levels and recruitment needs, particularlyfor additionalRegistered N ur se s Staff tr aining and development will also continue to ensure all staff maintain and enhance their skills.

The aim is to have the building project completed by late 2014. An indicative building schedule has been prepared based on a 15 month time-frame. The schedule includes the refurbishment of some existing areas to improve the overall quality and standard of accommodation and support services.

The building will be located at the western side of the existing facility with a short corridor and courtyard bringing the areas together.

othing revives my spirit as effectively as a walk in a wilderness area.

We shared our forest campsite at Mulligan’s Hut in the World Heritage National Park’s Gibraltar Ranges, high on the Great Divide, with a handful of hardy winter school holiday families. Nearby Dandahra Creek gurgled and gushed its way to the falls over the Eastern Escarpment.

As the sun tickled treetops at dawn we watched from our campervan ‘hide’ as a family of garrulous satin bower birds scavenged among the forest litter, disappearing into a dense tangle of bracken as our neighbour emerged to boil his billy.

Beguiling thornbills pecked at toast crumbs beneath our picnic table, while two bettongs with heavy pouches scoured the adjoining tent site.

Our first walk was through subtropical rainforest to The Cascades above Dandahra Falls. Here we met more of our exuberant neighbours, a group of teenage boys who couldn’t resist the temptation of a fallen log which spanned a section of the icy rapids. Their intrepid leader, a man in his forties, told us that he takes the boys on wilderness camps each year. They were a mixed bunch with a strong spirit of teamwork and great respect for their leader. Their discordant singing around the campfire that night reinforced our observations, as did the spotless condition of their vacated site next day.

We began our second walk toward The Needles, on the edge of the eastern escarpment, by crossing a footbridge over Dandahra Creek, the site of enterprising Mulligan’s now neglected tiny hydro scheme. The forest here had been recently burned,

allowing light to penetrate and new plants to emerge. The architectural beauty of black-trunked four metre grass trees was enchanting. A long ascending path through dense forest led to the edge of the escarpment where we sat on a mounded granite ledge overlooking the precariously-balancedNeedles. Many other domed granite giants protect the mountain or channel water into gushing gullies. Just beyond our reach in the clear light of a warming sun, a grey fantail twisted and turned, fluttering wings to disturb tiny insects among tips of trees. Behind us a whipbird cracked the silence of the forest. A few red bells hung on dainty epacris wedged between the boulders and waratahs promised a Spring display.

Refreshed, we followed the trail from the escarpment back to a tall sheltered Coachwood forest. Clarion calls of Lyrebirds flooded the valley.

Was that grey form which scurried into a fern tangle a lyrebird? Their scratchings had churned the damp litter beside our path. We climbed from the valley to a magnificent stand of Sydney bluegums, their white trunks soaring above slender-stemmed treeferns. After lunch beside a teatree-stained stream, we climbed again over a granite garden then down to skirt a highland swamp pebbled with wombat scats, draining over spectacular cascades, before returning to camp and a hot cuppa.

Pondi Needs A New Home annum Progress Association are looking for a new home to store Pondi, our Christmas Pageant fish, during the year. Pondi is 9m in length and 3m wide.

We need a shed or part of a shed to store him in whilst he is being revamped and then used again in our Christmas Pageant.

We are very indebted to Horwood Bagshaw for all the years they have stored Pondi but now they need this space.

We thought that maybe a farmer or someone else may have a space in their shed for Pondi so that he doesn’t become scrap metal. We have spent a bit of money on the framework so far and are now going to re-cover the body as it is looking very tired.

Mannum Football Club

Friends of Aminya or nineteen years the Friends of Aminya have volunteered their time and efforts to assist the residents of Aminya achieve a more comfortable quality of life. However, many of these volunteers have now reached a time in their lives when they need to care for themselves.

Their efforts in raising funds have been constant with catering at clearance sales, running raffles, catering at events, organising open days, being involved with the annual Christmas Tree Festival and many other activities to raise money.

More than $35,000 has been raised and this has enabled them to fu n d ma n y o f the improvements at Aminya. These include sewing curtains, providing finance for the front veranda, a pergola and carport and assisting with funds to develop the garden. They have

also purchased outside tables and chairs, indoor chairs, a TV and video recorder, table cloths, cutlery and crockery and also provided entertainment and craft materials for the residents.

It has been a fantastic effort – they really have made a difference.

The Residents and Management at Aminya express our thanks to Brenda Taylor, Anne Dyer and Rae Bottroff who are now retiring from the committee and hope that their commitment can be replicated by new members who can carry on their legacy.

New blood needed to survive? ne often hears the quote “sporting clubs are the life blood of the community” and Mannum is no exception. Can you imagine a place like Mannum without a football club? Difficult to imagine you might say, but in this day and age when dedicated volunteers are becoming fewer and fewer and the workload is left to the same old people, then a town without a football club could become a reality. It has happened in plenty of other country towns. People are becoming very reluctant to continue if the workload becomes too great and that is what has occurred at Mannum.

Imagine no junior football.

Those footballers, of which there are plenty, would have nowhere to play. Sure we may

have plenty of future champions in Under 9,11,13, 15 and 17 age groups at present, but they have very few parents who choose to get involved.

We also may need to find people to replace at least five members of the senior management committee, maybe more. That leaves the role of club leaders somewhat in jeopardy. So, as we are nearing the end of yet another season, instead of now talking about success on the playing arena, the far more serious concept needs to be addressed - to ensure the Club survives. Because, rest assured, if people do not pledge their support to actively become involved, there is no guarantee that this will happen.

he Cambrai Hotel was alive with talent and bright lights on Saturday 29th June 2013. We had a great final night; an awesome night, very well attended.

T Brenton Lewis Reappointed Chief Executive he Board of Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland Inc is proud to announce that at their June Meeting they appointed Chief Executive Brenton Lewis to another three year term.

Strategic Planning was an important theme for the June Board meeting. The Board committed to a three year partnership with the Federal and 7 of 8 local governments in the region, and formally accepted the new Regional Roadmap for 2013-2016. It was also important to review the leadership of the organisation for this period.

The Board agreed that CE Brenton Lewis’s record shows an excellent performance for 2012/13 citing his performance, initiative and vision for the region as ‘excellent’. RDA M and R Chairperson Mayor Neil Martinson was supportive of the decision to reappoint Brenton as “he will bring stability to the organisation in reaction to the unknown outcomes of the Federal Government election and the State Government election in March 2014.”

Brenton confirmed in reply, “I am thankful to the Board for their faith in my performance and that of our staff group. I look forward to continuing to build the strength of the organisation and developing our great region.”

Brenton Lewis has served as Chief Executive of Regional D evelopment A us tralia Murraylands and Riverland since its inception in 2010. Prior to this he served as Chief Executive of the Murraylands Regional Development Board from 2004-2010, and previously was a board member of the organisation for almost 10 years.

Murray Mallee Field Archers Incorporated is a field archery club. The club and all of its members are part of an association called the Australian Bowhunter’s Association. This provides us with the format that we shoot, the targets we use in competition and our insurance.

Field archery is quite different from what most people think, it is a different style from what was seen during the Olympics. We use a course that you walk around in a natural setting. Our targets are photographs of animals that are feral within Australia. We vary the distance we shoot from at each target. A few times each year we use 3D targets, these are rubber moulded animals that vary in size from a goat to an elk.

n the 25 June, Mannum Lions Club held their Handover Dinner at the Mannum Community Club attended by 89 Lions and partners. Lions members from Ridley, Karoonda, Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend accepted the invitation to attend and were made welcome by Master of Ceremonies, Wally Hammond.

Our special guest for the evening was District Governor, Ron Pascoe, who conducted the Handover to new President, Brenton Forrest and his new Board. Ron also entertained the audience with some lively anecdotes, as well as inducting new member Barry Harvey.

One of the highlights of the night was the ‘Tail Twister’ performance of Barry Ramm. Despite following in the footsteps of the legendary Phil Rooennfeldt, Barry was most entertaining and made sure that all member misdeeds throughout the year were recorded and fines issued.

The Mannum Lions Club thanks the Community Club for its cooperation and the excellent meals provided to all.

y the time you read this the building works completion date of 31st July will have past. With all work required to bring the facilities up to standard, we should not be totally surprised. Discussions with Mid Murray Council (MMC) and their builder on site suggest we will be looking at occupancy around mid September. When a date is confirmed we will let you know!

Another venue is currently being sourced for the ACE Program Term 3.

Participants registered for a course will receive notification by letter outlining new arrangements.

Those of us close to the action know how much work has to be completed and all concerned are doing their best to plan for “the day” when we can open the doors of the Mannum Community Hub (MCH). We are very excited about the opportunities and possibilities that can be created for our community access and the coming weeks will be a very busy time for all involved.

The Community Garden Group is off and running, planning a Public Meeting on August 19th, with guest speaker Sophie Thompson, Gardening Australia presenter. Flyers will be posted in the community. Contact MMSS 8569 2129 if you require any information or details. The Community Garden Steering Group recently held a site meeting, designing a garden layout and arranging future Garden Workshops. A Working Bee will be arranged at the Public meeting, it will be interesting to see what is under the debris and old native plantings.

The Mens Shed Committee has been working closely with the MMC and has now placed the order for their shed. I can hear all their feet shuffling; hands are itching to start their project. I believe another well known community service group has offered assistance so well done fellas. It’s great to see this cooperation, positive action and support from other local groups.

At a recent meeting, Angie Roesler and I spent some valuable time with the Mannum Teen Challenge group where we were presented with their wishes and plans for their future activities at the MCH. We were encouraged and pleasantly surprised with their research work and planning. They understand that good communication and planning will be required so all groups who share this community space may have their needs met. The MCH management committee is looking forward to working together with Teen Challenge and mentor Joy Marks to develop a strong partnership. Wherever possible we will assist the group to attain their goals.

I truly believe the MCH’s close proximity to the Mannum Community College (MCC) will provide opportunities for mentoring students while they are working with people skilled in working with wood and metal, planting, growing, harvesting and cooking fresh produce and other life skills. These types of programs will be conducted with strict mentoring protocol practices in place.

The MCC has kindly offered the MCH surplus woodworking machinery and furniture. We are thrilled with this donation and thank them on behalf of future users of the MCH. I’m sure there will be many hours of work and enjoyment for people to examine, repair, renovate, recycle and use this equipment.

Representatives from the Men’s Shed and the Mannum History Group attended the most recent MCH Management Committee meeting for the first time. This gave them an opportunity to find out the work done to date, what will be available for their activities and how their groups could contribute to the successful operation and sustainability of this important shared community space. At Your Leisure New Face At Mannum Leisure Centre hen you go to the Leisure Centre, you will be welcomed by Deb Roberts, puffed under her tutelage already. She moved to live in Mannum about 2½ years ago, after almost two decades in the fitness industry in Adelaide, where she ran who took up her new role as the Centre’s Programs Officer on 8th July.

Deb sees the Centre evolving in new and exciting ways. She has her own ideas her own personal training sessions and workshops. She is an experienced and on what she wants to do, but admits there will be an element of “jump in and go professional personal trainer, gym instructor, ‘heart moves’ guide, mentor, for it” early on. She wants to listen to the community and make the Centre instructor of instructors and hard task master. Well, I’m not sure about the last point, because she did promise me that she wouldn’t use “that stick behind the accessible to everyone. And she will be looking for volunteers to help her.

Things will, of course, be different. Deb will only be working 25 hours per door” if I came for a workout. Phew!

Deb aims to be “all things to all people”. For newbies at the gym, she will week, so volunteers will have to step up for another 10 hours a week, if the opening hours are to be show you around, assess where you are at, and draw up a routine for you. She has been teaching aerobics here for at Aminya. So, come along to the Centre to get fit with confidence, because Deb over 3 years, so many have huffed and will look after you “from the cradle to the grave”.

So Long, Sergeant Steve Harding

H

e was smiling; there were even some chuckles when I spoke with him for the Mag recently. Could it be that retirement beckons after 39 years in the SA Police force (SAPOL)?

By the time you read this, Sgt Steve will be “Mr Mum” to his 5 year old daughter, and maybe even doing all the housework for his wife who works as a nurse, though that wasn’t mentioned. He did mention,however, more time for hunting, shooting, fishing, especially fly fishing, and breeding rare birds like black cockatoos, and rare poultry.

When interviewed Sgt Steve last year (Issue 67 April 2012), sharing the quote on his noticeboard did not seem appropriate. This time, his opening comments illustrated how closely the quote speaks to changes he has experienced in SAPOL since he joined.

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing. Konstantin Josef Jireek, 1881 “The priorities of SAPOL have considerably changed. Now it’s all about lists. There are check-lists for everything you do, and if you don’t follow the lists to the letter, things won’t happen. For example, with the internal mail system. If you forget to write the word ‘postcode’ in the right place, just here on an envelope, right above the digits, and put a circle around it, it will get tossed into a waste bin. Micro management assisted by madness. These days, I spend 25% of my time, 2 hours each shift, on email”, Sgt Steve said. Not what he joined to do at age 15.

A couple of framed Certificates of Commendation were in his office, but “the rest are packed away in boxes somewhere. I wear my commendations inside my shirt” and that modesty rings true for a man who lives by the adage, ‘what you see

is what you get.’ Major drug busts, threats of suicide – the list would be long of what he has experienced during all, yes all, of his adult life.

With the rest of his officers, Sgt Steve’s focus in Mannum has continued to be on community work and patrolling the roads. “There are between 2 and 5 drink-driving charges a month and very low levels of offending, compared with other places I have worked. There is very little drug use and dealing, and none on a major scale in this area”, he said.

Sgt Steve hopes our community maintains its focus on youth through strong sporting clubs, older people being involved and showing what it is to be a man, continuing to set a good example, good parenting.

“Mannum has been a marvellous posting for me, the pick of them all, from every perspective: lifestyle, work, the complete support the community gives, many things”, he said.

And to you, the local community which for the police stretches from Tungkillo to the eastern border, south to about Caloote, and north to Caurnamont near Swan Reach, Sgt Steve says, “Thank you to everyone for helping me. I particularly appreciated people volunteering information after incidents were reported. I like doing my own investigating, but the extra details always help.

“I take with me fond memories of Mannum, and I’ll visit it again frequently on my motorcycle. It has been a wonderful posting to complete my career.”

We wish Sgt Steve good health, wonderful family time, and contentment as he does something else with his life.

hen interviewed last year, Sgt Steve Harding reported that his replacement as officer-in-charge of the local district had not been named.

Staffing levels have remained the same in the last 4 years, with the following officers based full-time in Mannum and coveringthe sub-station at Karoonda Senior Constable (SC) Edward Schonfeldt has been at Mannum for about 1 year.

SC Tony Shapely, was here several years ago, and has been back for 6 months.

SC Andy Fraser trained in the UK and was in the first course SAPOL ran specifically for UK recruits in March 2005. From there he went to the Transit Services Branch, then the Paedophile Task Force (Children in State Care - Mullighan Inquiry), Naracoorte and just before Easter he moved to Mannum.

SC Karen Newman has arrived here

recently with 15 years of experience in country areas. Retiring Sgt Harding described her as a skilled prosecutor who specialises in community policing. She has had a long involvement with Neighbourhood Watch and is likely to pursue that interest in Mannum.

Recent departures were SC Nick Chance who went to Pt Augusta a month ago, and SC Leah Pimlott who transferred to Naracoorte 3 months ago.

That number goes straight through to the Control Room in Adelaide rather than the more circuitous route taken by a call for Police to 000. very 12 months, OPAL rolls out a new theme, and at the moment it is promoting healthy breakfasts for children.

A healthy brekky is easy as... peel, pour, pop!

Peel a banana, pour milk on cereal or pop grainy bread in the toaster. Having a balanced diet consisting of foods across the five different food groups is extremely important for good health, and what better way to start than with a healthy brekky every morning.

Over the past few months, Bright Spark Entertainment has been delivering a fun and educational show to reinforce the healthy brekky message. Look out for it when it comes to Mannum later this year.

OPAL has also been working with parent groups on label reading workshops, in particular reading and understanding labels onchildren’s breakfast cereals. These workshops show parents how to read beyond the advertising campaigns to choose the healthiest option for their family. Geoff and Sharon at the Morgan Friendly Grocer are the first to trial in-store promotions that align with the OPAL healthy living messages being promoted in the community.

Children at Mannum Kindergarten and Rural Care have been learning about how eating well and being active everyday can be fun and adventurous.

The kindy have just finished the ‘Active Under 5s’ program which encouraged families to get out and be active. The program saw over 20 families commit to leaving the car at home, with some families committing to replace up to 15 car trips a week with active trips instead!

The end of term walk from the kindy to Mary Ann Reserve marked the celebration of the hugely successful

program with Captain Capsicum from Crunch Bunch joining Mayor Dave Burgess to hand out c e r tificate s to recognise the children’s achievements.

Despite the unpredictable winter weather, the kindy made efforts to lead community Mayor Dave Burgess, Elouise Kuhn, walks almost every Mary Langsford, Destiny Marston and day as part of the Captain Capsicum curriculum, with children learning about health benefits, road safety, weather, and environment as well as navigating their local town.

OPAL is now collating feedback from participating families to create an active map which shows accessible routes other families can use.

The Mannum Kindy has also been very pro-active in supporting children and families to make eating healthy part of every day eating. With the support of OPAL, the kindy is producing a healthy cook book which will be made available to the community and would like your family to contribute your favourite family recipe. U

nder his title of Chief Executive Officer of the Mid Murray Council, R. Peate says he felt compelled to respond to statements of an erroneous nature made by me in the last Mag. Was this response sanctioned by all the elected members of the Mid Murray Council?

I stand by every article that I submit to the Mannum Mag. I, and the other two complainants mentioned, believe that council did not follow their policies and procedures regarding our request for a review of one of their decisions and that a full and proper review was not undertaken. This was highlighted when the CEO told us that council did not have the resources to do so. This matter is still under investigation with the Ombudsman.

If “the work undertaken by council’s Marketing and Project Officer is of a high standard and quality”, why were there different explanations to the community about what the colours represented instead of a clear and consistent explanation, and why wasn’t the whole community engaged from the start of the process instead of being shown 3 predetermined choices then asked to vote? Then there is the question of “how the community is conceived”. Is the “erroneous statement” referred to, my statement that “Council could have put the logo issue to the community for feedback”whenImeantthatCouncilcouldhave putthe logo issue to the community for feedback from the point of inception; a small omission but erroneous? Could local artists and indeed the wider community have been engaged to present their thoughts?

Atthe Julycouncilmeeting,there wasdiscussionaboutthe backlog of complaints regarding breaches of council bylaws due to a lack of staffing now that their full time compliance officer has moved to waste management and has been replaced by a part time general inspector to work weekends and public holidays. I think they will be hard pressed to address all complaints given the 2 days per week they have to

cover the whole Mid Murray area. I myself am still waiting for attention to a problem first raised in August 2012.

The response to my points about the Truck ‘n Ute show, make it sound like I am being accused of being a liar. I reiterate there is nothing untrue in my article. I quote from council minutes, what I read in the MV Standard and the Mannum Mag and draw from my and others’ personal experience.

I DO support local business, local employment and community organisations but when I was a small business operator I never assumed that it was Council’s (ratepayers) responsibility to support my enterprise.

Regarding the updates on every council meeting, what happened to the notice to call for submissions to the recent Business Plan and Budget? I have followed this up with an official complaint to Council delivered in person to Mayor Burgess on 8/7/13 regarding their consultation process and have not received a response at the time of writing this letter.

Council’s Customer Service Charter states that they will acknowledge a complaint within 5 working days.

ItisdisappointingthatMidMurrayCouncilviatheir CEO is so defensive and elusive about genuine ratepayer concerns.

If I sound critical and negative toward Council, it is for the legitimate reasons I have provided in this and previous correspondence. I pride myself on voicing my opinion in a peaceful manner and offer positive alternative suggestions when I can.

This Council response is yet more spin and I and others, would be grateful if the Council/CEO addresses the topical questions and points raised by contributors to Mannum Mag. For example pedestrian safety in the main street of Mannum, sustainable development and the use of the term art and culture. To quote from a letter to the editor in a previous issue. “Remember us? ... We are not the enemy.”

he Hall (Mental Health Activity and Resource Centre) as you have known it for the last seven years will be no more.

We will keep the name The Hall but it is a Drop-In-Centre now, we are not governed by any Mental Health Group in South Australia! We are on our own. There has been a stigma towards the Hall in those seven years, and we hope this can now be put behind us as we get on with the job.

The Hall will be open the same three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The opening and closing time may vary so please look out for this in the coming months.

The people who come to the Hall are just like you and me. We all have a need to be appreciated, supported, encouraged and have someone to talk with and share our innermost secrets, and that will always be our goal.

Don’t forget our Bargain Corner is open those three days so drop-in for something you may need, you never know we might have it.

From the end of August there will be no more Old Time Dance meetings at the Lutheran Hall. Thank you to all who attended, we hope you enjoyed them.

Mannum History Group

Thank You Sergeant Steve

M

ay was History Month in South Australia and about 100,000 people in the State attended some of the 530 events organised by over 130 community history groups. For the first time, the Mannum History Group participated and members have already decided to join in again in 2014. History Month is organised

by History SA, a State government department which also manages the Motor Museum at Birdwood, the Migration Museum and the Maritime Museum at Port Adelaide.

The Mannum History Group will hold their Annual General Meeting at the Saunders Gorge Sanctuary on Wednesday 7th August, combined with a light lunch and an introduction to the features of the Sanctuary. Cars will depart from the Arnold car park near the Information Centre at 11:00 am. Visitors are welcome. Contact Judy Johnson (Secretary) 8569 2237.

In a review of the last year, notable activities include About Time (History Month), completing stage one of the mapping of the Mannum Cemetery and visiting many historic sites in the Mid Murray Council area.

lsewhere in this issue is an article reporting the retirement of Sergeant Steve Harding. This is a small collection of tributes to him from the community.

As President of the Mannum Football Club, on behalf of all our members and supporters, I would like to wish Steve Harding all the best in his retirement. During his stay at Mannum, Steve has always been a strong supporter of our Club and in particular the youth footballers. He has always encouraged people to play sport and has taken a keen interest in their progress as footballers and as they grow into young men.

From time-to-time Mid Murray Support Services have had to deal with some curly issues and an occasional unsavoury character. Sgt Steve has helped us out a number of times with advice and with action. He certainly knows how to sort out the unsavoury characters with tough efficiency but always shows compassion and understanding when we’ve had to deal with the curly, confidential and sometimes difficult issues with our aged and disadvantaged clients. I have got to know Steve just a little in the last 12 months and have enjoyed hearing from him about his plans for his retirement. It’s important to have a plan when we retire after a life time of working and Steve’s plans sound like fun. Makes me want to retire! Steve has

served the people of South Australia in one of the toughest, and often most dangerous roles within our community. He has done this for many, many years. Steve has shared with me some of his difficult experiences in the Police force. It is clear to me that this man has committed himself in the most admirable manner, in sometimes extraordinarily difficult situations, to the service of people. Serving people can bring great joy, but it can also bring great pain and heartbreak. Steve would have seen things that most people would never want to see and yet when you speak with him he is warm, friendly, welcoming and brimming with life. This is a disposition difficult to achieve after a life time of experiencing the best and the worst that people have to offer.

Congratulations to you, Steve, and your family.

May your retirement be full of peace, joy, fun and love.

To Be a Bureaucrat

M

y son was growing up. He was in year twelve at school. Junior decided that he wanted to be a bureaucrat.

“They seem to have all the fun,” he told us at breakfast one morning.

“And you always say I should enjoy what I do. Besides it will be a job for life as far as I can see. According to you both, the numbers are growing every week, there are almost as many of them as lawyers.”

So as a family we sailed forth to one of these government agencies which provided support and information on many things including further education.

Inside the reception area it appeared that there was a League of Nationsseeking advice and assistance.

Near the entrance was a device like a tape dispenser and a sign above which told us to take a ticket and wait our turn. Eventually our number was called. We presented ourselves to a young woman and told her what we wanted.

She nodded her head and smiled knowingly.

“You have the wrong ticket. You must take a ticket from the machine over there,” and she pointed to a similar machine with a similar sign sitting in another corner of the reception area.

Calmly we got another ticket and again waited our turn.

It came. The advisor this time was a young man.

“Have you filled out the registration forms?” he asked.

“What forms?” we asked.

He handed us a sheaf of forms that would have choked a paper shredder.

“When you have finished, get a ticket from the machine beside the entrance. He pointed to yet another machine which we had missed.

After reading the forms and filling in what we could, we took another ticket and waited again with patience. It was an older woman this

time who pushed her glasses up onto her forehead and glared at us.

“The form is perfectly simple and straightforward,” she told us. “Even an idiot can fill it out.”

We tried to explain that our son did not have a driver’s licence or a passport and that his birth certificate was with other family papers in the bank vault.

“Well you should have thought of that before you came here,” she said.

“You are just wasting our time. Come back when you have the necessary documents,” and with that she walked away.

It was some weeks later when, slightly frazzled and poorer by the cost of a driver’s license and a passport we once again entered the government sanctum. This time we went to the right ticket dispenser, so we thought. Unfortunately we were not quite right because we had to go to the first dispenser and be registered as a customer before we could go to the third dispenser to submit our forms.

Yet another young man attended us. When he had checked our forms and fixed some misunderstandings, he asked us what we wanted.

We explained about Junior’s career ideas and that we were seeking advice.

“Oh,” said the young man. “The Bachelor of Bureaucracy is a wonderful degree. I did that.

However we don’t give out information on university degrees.

You have to go to the particular university for that.”

My wife and I sighed.

The young man smiled sweetly and hand us yet another form.

The form was headed “Tell Us How We Did Today”. I put it in the bin as I walked out.

Junior looked radiant.

“Isn’t it a great job? Aren’t they so helpful?”

Andrew Turner, Colin’s Supervisor, drew on the story of the lame man’s healing to illustrate the role of a minister, and to encourage Colin to be visible in the Church and in the Mannum community.He said that the Church has something the world knows nothing of, the love of Jesus Christ and how his forgiveness and power can change our lives from hopelessness to hope. The State Executive minister of the Baptist Churches of South Australia, Rev. Mike Mills, led the rite of Ordination, which was followed by the laying on of hands and prayers by local and visiting representatives.

A very touching end to the service was the singing of the hymn “Shall we gather at the river”. This was the favourite hymn of Colin’s father who died when Colin was only 6 years old.

The celebrations continued over lunch where we shared in Holy Communion as part of the meal.

People had come to celebrate with Colin from local areas, Gawler, Glen Osmond and other places where Colin has formed friendships. Some commented on how much laughter there was – Baptists from all over seem to have a keen sense of humour!

The people of the Church in Mannum, Baptist and others, congratulate Colin, and commit to standing firmly with him. We will continue to encourage, pray for and support him in the days to come.

n Sunday 7th July, the Mannum Baptist Church was filled to capacity with family and friends for the ordination of Rev. Colin Nieass.

Colin has had responsibility for the Mannum church for some time, but this service marked the end of his training to qualify as an ordained minister of the Baptist church.

Colin shared his story,including his time as a public servant and how, while visiting Nepal on a trip to Mt Everest, he heard God’s call to a deeper commitment.

Taking part in the service were Sister Liz Murphy, Colin’s spiritual director, who led us in prayer, and Colin’s mother, Joy Connors, who read from Acts 3, the story of Peter and John healing the lame man who used to beg each day at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple. Colin spoke of his gratitude and deep appreciation for having a godly mother, one of the best gifts a person could have. Rev.

Volunteering in the Community

H

ow would you feel after finding on-line a media release to Radio Station 5MU written by an authority claiming credit for work a community member initiated and implemented?

This resident, ratepayer and revenue source did recently and was not impressed. While searching for any articles about the Murray Plains Cycle Trek, I found , compliments of the Mid Murray Council news/marketing release from late last year, a Mid Murray Council local news story containing this paragraph.

“The Council has also been working hard on the Murray Plains cycle trek between Mannum and Sedan. A brochure has been produced and signage will be installed.”

Before a rebuke from the Council is written regarding this story, some facts must be added to the picture that may make future council press releases more inclusive and accurate.

The Murray Plains Cycle Trek was a joint project between the Mid Murray Local Action Planning Group (aCommunity Environmental Group)and volunteers of The Friends of T.P. Bellchambers and Murray Plains Reserves. Facilitation and input was provided by the Mid

Is it Worth the Effort?

Murray Local Action Planning Group staff and trail head and roadside signs were donated by the Sedan Progress Association and myself. The trail markers were designed and fabricatedby volunteers with funds from Sustainable Recreation Funds for under $1000.

The brochure was produced with help and paid for by the Mid Murray Lap. Many days of input from myself, the designer of the project, and other volunteers helped implement the Trek.

The Mid Murray Council was approached for permission to erect trail markers and an opinion sought about the occupational health and safety content of the brochure from the Council Safety Officer. The Mid Murray Council was paid to purchase and erect roadside safety signs for Milendella Road, (a known heavy vehicle route); paid by me as a donation, along with the more than 1000 kilometres of travel on the route planning and installing markers for the project. The advice and approval process for signs and brochure content was asked of the Mid Murray Council and there was no other discussion with me, the instigator of the project, about the Council being directly in charge of or

engaged as a major player in the project other than that.

It is a disappointment that the ideology of some local government departments (autocracy) is about total control, rather than facilitating and allowing inclusive community inspired projects to proceed unhindered, as other regions do.

Many community projects and events happen without Councils taking credit for them and applying over-sized corporate recognition logos to them. To shut out input from often highly skilled community members goes against the concept of an inclusive community that gives otherwise segregated people a go at making a contribution.

It is no wonder so many show apathy toward engaging in the Mid Murray region, often with the tragedy of social isolation being the result. One asset given little importance is the people making up a community with the skills they have acquired and would like to share. For an authority to deny the people of a community the ability to use and share their skills with others, freely for the community, surely gives its residents paucity of togetherness.

Call for Volunteer Coaches Introductory Basketball Program for 5-12 Year Olds ussie Hoops is a fun and exciting national program for young children, where they learn basketball through games and activities. Aussie Hoops is for all boys and girls from 5 to 12 years of age and ALL abilities.

We want to start Aussie Hoops at Mannum Leisure Centre this summer.

But first we must recruit volunteer coaches to take part in basic training to help deliver sessions during school term. The 2 hour training course is run FREE by SA Country Basketball, and provides a Level 0 Coaching accreditation. You do not need skills or experience in playing basketball yourself, simply a willingness to learn and support children to develop their skills here in Mannum.

Basketball is a fantastic sport that can be played all year round, indoors or outdoors. There are plenty of activities for the children to do.

Frugality Kills Pettiness

astmonth’sFree Trade/Man-made contributions and Mike Steicke’s reflectionsonconsumerism andhollow ambition reminded me of the Michauds’(70s)photoessay“Caravans to Tartary”; in particular the Afghan pot mender shown painstakingly, with the barest of tools, restoring a shattered bowl to functionality.

Inspired to travel by Bouvier’s poetic and insightful “Way of the World” (mid-50s) which the essay references: “Here there is an appetite for the essential, constantly sustained by the spectacle of a nature in which man appears as a humble accident, by the subtlety and slowness of a life in which frugality kills pettiness.”

The record proved timely, with the arrival of modern technology imminent; the culture doomed.

Manifest was the tenuous hold on existence, achieved through vibrant community and an enduring intimacy with the earth; minimal trade delivered by camel; art and artisanry serving to cohere the group; little concept of rubbish; mores – now vanished – holding ambition and self-interest in check. Equilibrium.

Harsh and austere certainly (Samsara) – regrettably patriarchal – but an existence we were bred to which,inmostrespects,ispreferable to the insidious comfort and sterility we pursue gratuitously, are debased by, and costs the Earth. Imbalance.

hen TV was new to this country (it came to Australia in 1956, just in time for the Melbourne Olympics – then Adelaide in 1959) there was a number of shows which in their way have become classics, particularly to the generation now known as baby boomers.

Mostly the shows came from the USA although the BBCalsoproduced some memorable entertainment.

Shows which came to our seventeen inch black and white screens included 77 Sunset Strip with the suave Edd “Cookie” Byrnes, Peter Gunn, Bonanza and Rawhide. Mostly they were either detective or western series. There were some other shows such as Mr Ed, Leave it to Beaver and My Three Sons. What was a feature of many of these shows and makes them different from much of today’s TV was the theme music. Some of the musicians and arrangers who contributed to the sound of the times were well known and highly articulate artists whose music endures today.

Little known but very prolific was Earle Hagen. Earle began his musical career as a trombonist which is not

unusual for composer/arrangers.

Nelson Riddle, Ray Conniff and Glenn Miller were among that breed.

With Ray Noble,Hagenco-composed “Harlem Nocturne” which has been performed by many artists with a notable version by Spike Jones. It became the theme for Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer. He also worked in Hollywood on films such as Call Me Madam, Carousel and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Other TV show themes that he wrote included My Sister Eileen, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Gomer Pyle and The Mod Squad. His biggest body of work was with the TV series I Spy, where the director was determined to have a different musical theme each week, similar to Peter Gunn about ten years before. He won an Emmy for that work. One last snippet; besides co-writing the music for The Andy Griffith Show he was also the whistler in the recording.

Nelson Riddle was an arranger of immense talent. For years Norman Granz, one time owner of Verve Records and manager of Ella Fitzgerald, wanted Riddle to arrange Ella’s songbooks. It finally happened

with “The George and Ira Gershwin Songbook”. Nelson had some personal problems. He drank too much and he had a long time affair with Rosemary Clooney when they were both married to others. He was desperate to write notable TV themes which would become hits and lead him into the moneyed world of pop.

It didn’t really happen but he did write the notable themes for two well rated shows. The shows were Route 66 and The Untouchables. By far Nelson’s biggest achievement was as arranger for Frank Sinatra and the series of Capitol albums which brought Sinatra back from the edge of extinction.

I am unaware of anything else that Jeff Alexander wrote except “Music to be Murdered By” which was played with a voice-over by Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock tells us that it is music “… in a jugular vein.” The opening bars were those used in Alfred Hitchcock Presents; then the sounds become a little more macabre.

Works, Services and Projects Update from Mid Murray Council selection of items discussed or determined at the Monday 8th July 2013 meeting.

• The 2013/14 budget has been adopted. See page 3.

• We will highlight to the South Australian Government the additional work required from Council’s Environmental Health Manager for the new SA Public Health Act 2011. To reduce costs in producing a Public Health Plan we will work with the Murray and Mallee Local Government Association Councils to produce a Joint Regional Public Health Plan.

• A report highlighting the difficulty Council has in dealing with many active unlawful development/compliance issues was considered. We will approach the State Government for financial assistance to engage a compliance officer, request legislative amendments for an extension of the period for the commencement of legal action for illegal development and an increase to staffing levels for Department for Environment, Water and Natural Resources and Environment Protection Authority.

• The Morgan library will become a stand-alone library, reducing costs of over $14,000 per year, increasing service provision and its community profile.

• With regional health promotion and recreational planning staff from across the Murraylands, we are exploring what opportunities there are to increase the number of cyclists in our region.

• Council will submit an application to source funds under the special community youth grants to assist children and young people to be supported in their communities. Outcomes would include an increase in service provision, area of services, retention of existing services, community programs, events, better communication and networking.

• Council approved an interest free loan of $8200 to Blanchetown Sporting Bodies to assist with the repair

Council has now adopted a new logo, considered to be more representative of the towns and communities throughout the Council area and providing a more contemporary look and feel. A Working Party will determine the introduction process. Importantly, there will be no cost. The new logo will be used when existing stocks displaying the logo are replenished.

Council will advise Crown Lands SA – Murray Darling Basin that it strongly considers that the existing houseboats at Cowirra (subject to the previous DA 711/426/11) be required to be removed forthwith from the site, failing which enforcement proceedings be instigated. Further, consideration of the Crown land at Cowirra being under the care, control and management of Council as a reserve dedicated for recreation purposes will be referred to the Cowirra Action Group for comment.

Council will sponsor the 2013 Advantage SA Regional Awards to the amount of $550 and contribute $1500 for the provision of 4 pavers to assist with the establishment of the new Leukaemia Foundations’ South Australian Patient Village.

Reduction of the replacement vehicle purchases for 2013/14 by $128,000 will reduce the loans needed.

Strategies will be implemented to ensure the percentage legislative requirements for the inspection of building trusses are met.

Tourism funding for the Murraylands Tourism Partnership for 2013/14 ($25,000), Destination Riverland ($11,600) and project funding for Murraylands Regional Tourist Association on a justification basis has been approved for twelve months. A workshop will be scheduled with representatives from Murraylands Tourism Partnership and Destination Riverland to discuss the

benefits and outcomes to Council.

• Whilst in Canberra for the National General Assembly 2013, the Mayor and CEO met the Shadow Minister for Youth and Sport, Luke Hartsuyker, Bob Baldwin, Shadow Minister for Tourism and Barnaby Joyce, Shadow Minister for Regional Development to discuss Council’s projects and services.

• The Federal Government Roads to Recovery funding allocation for 2013/14 is $470,650.

• The price increase for street lighting to Council is approximately 2.62%.

• The Federal Government has provided $272,411 to Council under the Regional Development Australia Round 5 funding program. It has been allocated to the following projects: Swan Reach Town Hall upgrade ($120,000), Mannum Sport Precinct Project lighting upgrade ($90,000), Morgan Riverfront Precinct Project ($62,411).

• The Funding Agreement between Murraylands and Riverland Regional Development Australia and Mid Murray Council has been endorsed.

• Council representatives met with Mr Stephan Knoll, Endorsed Liberal Candidate for the State’s seat of Schubert to highlight the range of Council services and projects required.

• Council will contact other councils in South Australia which have implemented electronic development applications lodgement system to ascertain how this may be able to be implemented.

• The Mayor, Dave Burgess, will discuss with other member councils the continuation of membership of the Murray Darling Association Region 6.• A submission will be made to the Local Government Association of South Australia regarding the Local Excellence Expert Panel’s discussion paper “Towards the Council of the Future”.

Weighing My Options t’s winter. I’m considering emptying my bathroom of that summer pest – my bathroom scales. They can sit and sulk in the garage until I need them again. In winter I hate my bathroom scales. I dread the look of them sitting smugly in the corner. They spoil my nice hot shower. I know I’ll have to step on them, sooner or later. I scrub extra hard, hoping somehow I’ll weigh less when I come out. I forgot, my hair weighs more when it’s wet – should have stepped on them first. I could wait – but then I’ll be dressed. And it’s winter – my clothes weigh a lot. Well, I hope it’s my clothes.

Winter is not a nice time for counting calories. (I refuse to count kilojoules – there’s too many of them.) But winter – that’s the time for nice hot drinks and chestnuts roasting by an open fire. Do you know how many calories chestnuts have?

Every 30 grams has 70 of the nasty things – that’s before the butter. Thirty grams isn’t a lot. I don’t have a kitchen scale; the one in the bathroom is enough to cope with. So I checked the cupboard. Thirty grams is what one thin rice cake weighs. That’s

not a lot of chestnuts. One maybe – before you dip it in butter. Popcorn isn’t much better. You can get a cup of the stuff cheap – 28 calories if you air pop it. But – a tablespoon of butter has 145 calories and what is popcorn without butter – unless you want to put sugar on it. That’s a real trap – ½ cup of castor sugar has almost twice as many calories (440) as icing sugar (265). Your choice. Good luck.

As for those nice hot drinks – there’s hot chocolate and mulled wine and sherry and … I think I misplaced my calorie counter.

I’ll worry about it later – in spring maybe. Winter is the time for real food. Salads are OK for summer, quite good in fact. But for winter I want something coming out of a nice hot oven.

Lasagna or potato bake – a roast maybe and yes, with gravy.

Dessert should be warm and sweet – sherbet just doesn’t seem right. Then there’s morning tea – definitely scones with jam or cream.

If I find it I may put my calorie counter in that open fire.

And those scales have to go.
