Mannum Roos – Twice as Good The Mannum Roos Netball and Football Clubs have done it again winning the 2013 A Grade RMNA and RMFL premierships, ten years after their historic wins in 2003.

he A Grade netball grand final was a thrilling match, with Mannum facing Imperials, who were undefeated the entire season until the final match of the minor round. The grand final scores see-sawed all match, and at three quarter time Mannum had only a two goal lead. Mannum then hit their straps in the final quarter to storm home with a convincing 11 goal win. Tracy Loechel, who also played in the 2003 grand final win, was awarded best on court.

The crowd support from Mannum supporters was magnificent at both the netball and football grand finals – no one wanted to miss the games and the green and gold support easily outnumbered Imperials.

The Mannum Roos Netball Club capped off a successful season with their combined Juniors and Seniors Presentation Night on Friday September 20th at the Mannum Community Club. With over 150 players, family, committee and community members present, it was an evening of celebration as they looked back on the club’s great achievements in 2013, including three of our teams making the Grand Final: 13 & Under Div 2, and 15 & Under Div 2 and the A Grade.

Craig Berlin was awarded the May Bock Perpetual Trophy for Clubperson of the Year, after going above and beyond for the Netball Club in 2013. Kady Poole was awarded the RMNA Highest Vote Getter for the Roos, while Tracy Loechel received the Murray Harvy Award for Highest Senior Votes. The evening concluded with the presentation of the A Grade Premiership team.

stated in last month’s Mannum Mag article that both the Mannum “A” grade side and the Under 15 side had put themselves in contention for the ultimate prize – a premiership in both grades.

Well, you would all be aware by now that our future champions, the Under 15s, really gave the undefeated Mypo a run for their money and went under by just 11 points. They actually led at ¾ time, 9 goals to 5 goals 8 points, but could not contain the good players of Mypo in the last quarter. It was a really good effort by “Farmer” and the boys however and they would be well satisfied with their year.

The League side did everyone proud and rattled home to beat Imperials by 23 points. We were 2 goals down at ¾ time but kicked eight glorious goals to two in the last quarter. It was a great team effort by all the players and well coached by Shane Yeates on the day. It was evident that a number of players benefited from having the experienced players around them and many made valuable contributions. The crowd support from Mannum supporters was magnificent – no one wanted to miss this game and we easily outnumbered the supporters from Imperials.

To Shane, to all the support staff and especially to the players, our congratulations for teaming well to win the 2013 flag. It requires a big effort to win a flag. We must ensure now that our Club becomes a force in the RMFL by recruiting more people to assist and lighten the workload of everyone off field and try to maintain this success both on and off the playing arena.

It is an exciting time!

Editorial y now you will have received the new Visitor’s Guide. It is also available, in colour, from our website menu or Extras page.

This does not replace the annual Visitor Guide & Holiday Issue, now simply called the Holiday Issue.

The Holiday Issue is an opportunity for local businesses, clubs, service providers and other organisations to tell you and visitors about the services provided and events being held during the holiday period.

It is also a forum for “holiday” messages from our Council, Police and the local churches via the Interchurch Council.

The primary purpose of the new Visitor’s Guide is to promote Mannum as a yearround destination. It provides brief, enticing descriptions of the “attractions” in and around Mannum. The reader then goes to the Visitor Information Centre to collect detailed brochures on the attractions that interest them.

Please read this trial edition of the Guide with a critical eye. Leave your suggestions for additions, deletions or corrections at the Information Centre. Collectively, you know the best features that should be promoted, encouraging visitors to come, stay and play in our region.

We have the replacement for our oldest printer. It is a little faster and both printers now use the same consumables.

Many thanks to the Mid Murray Council for the interest free loan to help purchase the new printer.

We had to preprint the red sections of the front page of the Holiday issue before the red print drum left with the old printer. In our rush, the Holiday Issue for this year will still be titled Visitor Guide & Holiday Issue. By the end of next year we should have a red print drum for the current printers and will have corrected the title of the Holiday Issue.

Low Standards?

Dear Editor, I wish to reply to Kitty Schiansky (My View, Issue 80, June 2013).

I am the driver of the truck Low Standards mentioned in the article. I have driven trucks of this size for ten years with a clean driving record. No crashes or demerits in over two million kilometres. I drive down the Main Street of Mannum regularly and often twice per day.

Ms Schiansky has a right to her opinion, but she has made some factual errors.

The name Low Standards is an oxymoron. Sure the truck delivers stock feed to dairymen and is driven in, and is sometimes covered in, what comes out of the cows. The oxymoron is the driver of the truck. That was an oxymoron, not a moron.

Myself and my boss have very high standards. High standards of service, driving ability and reliability, but most of all friendship and humour.

This job is long hours, in all weather, with testing deadlines but the people that you meet in this industry are some of the best that walk on earth and a few of the worst.

If my crime is laughing to much in my days work I plead guilty. If I can’t laugh and make others smile I have wasted a day.

Farmers and ferry drivers sometimes do not have much to smile at. I thoroughly enjoy my work.

I did notice the crossing in Mannum that day but I did not notice the lady or her guide dog.

Guide dog? She must have one because I cart potatoes not onions. I laugh not cry.

Everything the lady and her dear dog eat, wear, etc comes off the back of a truck.

I feel sorry for that dog and anyone she cooks for. Mashed onion is not my thing and imagine what that poor dog has to eat.

Now I hope she understands,

just because I put my name on the letter I do not want a date with her but I do love Labradors.

I don’t reckon I could live with a woman who couldn’t smell the difference between onions and potatoes even if she relies on a dog to see.

Obviously there was an oxymoron on the truck and a moron on the footpath that day.

And that poor dog having to lead a kitty and not chase cats.

I do enjoy the Mannum mag and the low standards of editing, only kidding the editing is cool.

The Hall Dear Editor, How disappointing and heart breaking to read in the Mannum Mag (Issue 82, August 2013) “The Hall (Mental Health Activity and Resource Centre) as you have known it for the last seven years will be no more.”

I’ve read The Hall reports with a growing concern as the MHAL (Mental Health Activity and Learning) was originally started by a small group of dedicated, passionate people for mental health consumers, carers, people with disabilities and supportive community members.

How could the current chairperson say they “hope the stigma of the last 7 years can be put behind them as they get on with the job.”?

There will always be people who stigmatise others for who they are or what they do or where they go. But many people found The MHAL and then The Hall, to which it was renamed when a mental health marketing grant was a received, a safe and supporting place. For some it gave focus to their day, to actually get up and get organised and get out of the house, breaking down the barriers of isolation and self stigmatisation.

It had been said The Hall “Gave them wings”. The Hall at that stage had wonderful, careing people, and everyone should know that depression stifles many a good person.

Creative, frugal management, Council, community, businesses and the Lions support turned an old disused Scout Hall and overgrown yard into a vibrant place, not at all stigmatised under the mental health name.

Grants were applied for and obtained for many improvements including a new kitchen and appliances, all under the unashamed banner of mental health, thus improving the lives of those with mental illness.

When The Hall was taken over by different people I stopped going and helping out, not approving of many things the new committee were doing, as did others.

Shame on the current committee and its chairperson.

Shame, shame, shame on you.

Hang your heads in shame as you have offended too many people with the comments you made in the Mannum Mag. The world is trying to break down the ignorance of mental health, there are advertisements all over the TV and radio trying to break down these barriers, and you had the nerve to write what you did!

I believe you are now not governed by any mental health group in SA (Mannum Mag, Issue 82) and I also believe you have had the bus taken away from you (Mannum Mag, Issue 83). I wonder why?

Yes, you are on your own (Mannum Mag, Issue 82) aren’t you? You don’t deserve to use the good name of The Hall. Who would want to drop into your drop in centre? Who would want to be seen as bringing a stigma with us?

Free Speech Dear Editor, While welcoming the view of the trio of contributors to Letters (September 2013), regarding “negativity”, they’ve not realised the potential for elevating complaintinto discussion; thereby tackling the specifics of that which offends them.

In contrast to the pervasive, one-way, electronic chatter, Mannum Mag offers this privileged opportunity for a considered exchange of ideas.

Each of us harbors prejudice. It’s easy to vaguely dismiss the concerns of others because they unsettle our complacency; rather, the reality check of constructing sound argument and inviting a response.

The editorial balance is excellent, providing a candid mirror on community; let’s hold off on issuing rose-tinted glasses. Instead, let’s engage.

What better model of engagement than Jacqui and Max Merckenschlager? Poetic and profound. Words that linger. I hope the river’s a sufficient link between Mannum and (the return to) Riverglades that they continue their, against the flow, contributions. In the meantime, Thanks.

Dear Editor, That local people elect to be vocal about their community in the local Mannum Mag is neither sad nor necessarily contagious. It is, at least for now, a right people are able to exercise if they so choose.

People brave enough to openly voice their opinions in the local paper also deserve some respect for accepting the consequences of what it means to do so in a small country town. Anonymity is not an option for some.

I, for one, find a little more of the unvarnished truth refreshing. When bright optimism turns into a Pollyanna-ish desire for nothing but ‘good news’ and ‘rose coloured reporting’, the ability to cast a judicious, analytical eye over what is really going on out there, is lost.

Accentuate the Positive Dear Editor, As a permanent resident of Mannum for nearly 40 years I refuse to take part in the negativity being aired at the moment.

However, I do feel it necessary to speak positively of “The Hall”.

During my life in Mannum I have experienced many Health issues, including severe “Depression”, loneliness and a very low self esteem.

I have accepted and enjoyed the challenges of managing your organisation over the past three

years. Together we have made many changes and we now have a professional yet caring organisation which enjoys good governance, transparency and some excellent community growth projects. We can all hold our heads high as we celebrate a Home and Community Care program servicing the entire Mid Murray Council region; The Mannum Community Hub (your community centre); The Mannum Community Men’s Shed; The Mannum Community Garden: Scrooges Op Shop; Adult Community Education courses and Mannum Old Style Dancing. In the near future there will be a whole range of programs for children, youth, adults and the aged as together we grow this fine volunteer driven service organisation.

I will still be with MMSS for the next couple of months, in a part-time capacity, to mentor the new Coordinator and to assist with the move into the Mannum Community Hub. See-you-later and thank you for your support Mid Murray!

Age Group 13 - 17 Years Freeze Frame Cyberbullying ver wanted to be a filmmaker? Fancy yourself as a bit of a storyteller? Well, here is your chance to put your media skills to a good cause and be in the running for some great prizes.

For the second year running, the Australian Communications and Media Authority is supporting the BackMeUp online video competition.

The competition is open to young Australians aged 13 to 17 years and asks entrants to make a video about how to back someone up who is being cyberbullied. It aims to spread the word about how important it is to support friends and peers who may be targets of bullies, and to take safe action.

Once again, the ACMA will be showcasing winning films in its Cybersmart program.

The competition is being run by the Australian Human Rights Commission and closes on 20 October 2013. For entry details visit BackMeUp:

From Your Local Member Mr Ivan Venning MP, Member for Schubert Pre-harvest Warning ember for Schubert, Ivan Venning is warning farmers to be vigilant this coming harvest, to ensure they are complying with rules and regulations regarding the movement of large farm machinery.

Mr Venning, a grain grower himself, said primary producers face an increasing amount of legislation that they have to understand and comply with.

“Be aware of your responsibilities, get a copy of the Code of Practice for Oversize or Overmass Agricultural Vehicles, read it and keep a copy in your farm library for future reference,” he said.

“Farmers need to be careful and be aware of what the law says, particularly in relation to bins on roads and carrying the appropriate paperwork in the tractor or vehicle.

“They need to be aware that the mandatory flashing yellow warning light is clearly visible for five hundred metres in any direction - if it takes more than one light to achieve this, then install another” he said, “Installing it on the underside of the silo with a magnetic base can be a solution.”

Mr Venning would like to try and amend the laws in relation to the movement of farm machinery.

“Grape harvesters are able to be moved at night, following strict conditions, so I cannot understand why other farm machinery is not able to be moved at night with similar safeguards?

“The current Code of Practice prohibits the movement of oversize or overmass agricultural vehicles between sunset and sunrise.

“Surely it would improve safety for everyone if the rules were amended to allow the movement of farm machinery at night, but with strict conditions.

“Often it is much safer to move such large machinery and equipment at night, as there is much less traffic.”

“If any farmers experience issues or difficulties in relation to compliance or feel they have been unfairly penalised please feel free to contact my office and I will try to assist in whatever way I can.

“However, I urge all farmers to be careful – It is not worth taking risks” said Mr Venning.

WorkCover Performance Mr Venning recently moved a motion in Parliament condemning the government for the continuing poor performance of Workcover.

He described WorkCover as the worst performing workers compensation scheme in the country, with the levy payable by business, the funding rate and the return to work rate all the poorest in the country.

The WorkCover unfunded liability has increased from $56 million in 2001 to $1.4 billion – an increase of 2,380 per cent.

“Why should South Australian businesses suffer the highest workers compensation costs in Australia? How can our businesses be competitive?” asked Mr Venning.

“The [Occupational Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Committee] report was very comprehensive and contained 23 recommendations aimed at improving the system.

“There are many simple solutions outlined in this report that could be implemented to improve return to work rates and reduce the unfunded liability.

“On an apolitical basis we should say, ‘Okay, we’ll implement this. Action must be taken to fix the mess that WorkCover has become.’”

The South Australian Local Government Grants Commission is a statutory authority responsible for advising the Minister for State/Local Government Relations on the distribution of Commonwealth Financial Assistance Grants to local governing authorities in South Australia.

These grants are untied and decisions on their expenditure are the responsibility of individual councils.

For 2012-13, a sum of $148 million has been allocated to 74 councils/communities in the State.

The Commission does not provide funds for specific projects Grants are provided under the Commonwealth Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act, 1995. Under Section 11 of this Act the Commission is required to hold public hearings in connection with its recommendations. The purpose of these hearings is to provide clarification of the Commission’s operations and the opportunity for members of the public to raise issues with the Commission.

The Commission will be visiting the Mid Murray Council, 49 Adelaide Road, Mannum at 10:00 am on Wednesday, 9 October 2013, to hold discussions with elected members and staff, and with any members of the public in attendance at the meeting.

Swimming Pool Supervisors Needed

M

id Murray Council with the support of the Mannum Community College will once again be opening the swimming pool at the college over summer.

To help make this happen we require suitably qualified people to supervise the pool during the hours it is open to the public. Council has limited funds budgeted to ensure the pool can be open to the community however volunteer support could see the opening hours extended.

Supervisors would preferably have qualifications and experience in pool supervision. This would include things like a ‘bronze medallion’ and ‘senior first aid’. There may be an opportunity to provide training for people with an interest in being a pool supervisor at the Mannum Pool.

It is anticipated that the pool will

be open from late November 2013 until late March 2014. During the swimming season the pool will be available if the temperature is over 28 degrees from 4pm – 6pm week nights and 2pm – 6pm on weekends and school holidays. If the temperature is over 38 the pool will be open from 4pm until 8pm. These times have been nominated based on use from the previous year.

Hymn-lovers Sing

A

bout 30 people gathered in the Mannum Uniting Church on Sunday 22nd September to sing some of our favourite hymns. We started with “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” and finished with “A Mighty Fortress is our God”, but mixed in with boisterous songs of praise were quieter hymns like “Take my Life” and “Abide with Me”.

The hymns had been chosen by members of the community, and there was something for everyone. Heather Payne and Lyn Gross led the singing with their amazing skills on the organ.

A tasty afternoon tea halfway through was a welcome way of regaining our breath.

The Hymn-Lovers Sing was an initiative of the Mannum Interchurch Council.

The next Hymn-Lovers Sing will be held in January and everyone is welcome.

Not only would the recipient be getting a great hamper of our own produce, no doubt it would lead to future customers. Other items can be added for the appropriate hamper ordered. There may even be hampers for sale in the shop. Can’t think of a more welcome gift, and it is quite a non gender gift.

With a pair of binoculars gathering the light many millions of stars in groups with names like the Jewel Box and the Lagoon Nebula are bought to the focus of the eye.

The early evening planets are Venus, very bright at -4.4 magnitude, Jupiter (-2.3), Saturn and Mercury. The giant Jupiter sets after midnight.

Mars rises before the Sun but with the planets grouping somewhat, as they will over the month, photo opportunities abound for the planets and their brightness.

One of the most overlooked pieces of equipment in astronomy is the clock or time piece. It is vital for monitoring the rising and setting times of stars and planets and is a start to understanding star time (sidereal time). Many time pieces, such as modern wrist watches, have multiple functions that are helpful when travelling on land or sea and in astronomy. Being able to locate constellations along with time zones is assisted by such devices showing meridian hours and providing a reference to the constellations.

The constellation of Orion at one extreme of the Earth’s orbit marks the start of summer in some parts of the world. The constellation Scorpius at the other extreme is another marker. Being familiar with these two groups is a start to finding other objects; similar to knowing where the north and south poles are when in the remote areas of Earth. Knowing that Orion is in the 5th hour right ascension and Scorpius is on or near the 16th hour you can find them using your Norton star atlas or electronic hand held planetarium in your backyard observatory.

N

otice the logo?The Mannum Community Hub Management Committee feels it representsthe developing identity of the Hub and is now ‘part of the family’. Activities on the Walker Avenue site in recent weeks have generated considerable community interest. As is evident when passing by, there has been progress in the development of the Men’s Shed, the Mannum Community Garden and programs at the Hub. The Management Committee continue to meet on a regular basis organising, approving, consulting and fostering relationships in our community that will enhance and develop your community space and place. This committee has put in considerable volunteer hours doing this work and once again, a volunteer driven community facility and its associated programs is very soon to be ready for occupation and use; we are excited!

The Mid Murray Support Services AGM on the 24th October will be held at the Mannum Community Hub, providing an opportunity to come and see the facility that is being developed for you and your community. For details contact us on 8569 2129 or call in at 71 Randell Street.

During a recent visit to the Hub, builders Rick and Leon pointed out a wonderful discovery in the largest room; the framework that housed a room divider ‘in the day’ has inscribed height markings of students. Photos have been taken of this and we are optimistic about retaining these markings.

They are very faint at the moment but we will try.

Maybe you remember having your height measurement marked in that room as a student; if so we would love to hear from you to get your story.

Volunteers We are now taking applications to volunteer at the Hub. There is a range opportunities for engagement including; the Hub Help Desk, ACE (Adult Community Education) Program assistants, Men’s Shed, Mannum Community Garden, Hub Connect Café and general Hub volunteer assistants. Volunteering is a rewarding and valuable activity. We genuinely appreciate the time volunteers give to their community. We are very flexible and take an individual approach and tailor volunteer roles to suit needs and availability. Contact me if you are curious about volunteering at Mannum Community Hub and I will happily make some time to talk with you about our Volunteer Program.

Hub Groups As a community facility we welcome enquiries from groups or clubs wanting a space to hold meetings, activities and gatherings. Please contact me for further information if your group or club is looking for a ‘home’ and we can discuss how we may meet your needs.

While consulting with registered Hub Groups, Mannum History Group, Mannum Weight Watchers and Teen Challenge regarding their needs we have also been exploring the creation of expanded programs such as; monthly Historical

Research Assistance days provided by the History Group and a Teen Challenge Social Enterprise and Awareness Program. On the 26th October from 11:00am Teen Challenge will be hosting morning tea and refreshments for the ‘Ride 4 Rehab’ event passing through Mannum. Don’t miss the opportunity to support this worthy program that helps many South Australians.

Organic gardening principles are being used and have delivered fun filled learning experiences with the expertguidance of Steve Yarrow, who holds a wealth of knowledge on many aspects of gardening. n Ecumenical Service for Aboriginal Missions will be held at the Mannum Uniting Church, cnr Walker Ave and Greening Street, Mannum, on Sunday 13th October at 10:00 am.

The guest speaker will be Rev Dr Steve Etherington (pictured with his wife, Narelle), who is a long-time Church Missionary Society (CMS) missionary to Aboriginal people in Arnhem Land.

Steve and Narelle went to Oenpelli in 1977 as teachers and have spent the past 35 years working with the people of Arnhem Land, especially those who live near Kakadu National Park.

Steve has also been involved in the translation of the New Testament into the Kunwinjku language.

ith the exception of the very ill and elderly, I am yet to come across anyone who tripped and fell still literally sitting there two or three days later. Common sense (or is it instinct?) compels us to get up, dust ourselves off as best as we can and be on our way. Why then precious one do you berate yourself over an incident that you are better off walking away from? Have you not sat down and wept long enough?

Do not give it power to stop you from getting to where you were headed. I dare you to arise, cast your burden unto the Lord and let each step that you take forward even though painful, take you further away from the place you fell (i.e. got hurt, made a mistake, etc.) … just a thought!

Food is Life is Food ntroducing my new favourite salad dressing, derived from a recipe I stumbled across in a magazine some time ago; I cannot recall its name. If the recipe ‘rings a bell’ with you I would be interested to find out which magazine it was.

I have developed a taste for drizzling salad dressing over steamed vegetables to add more flavour interest and I can highly recommend using this dressing to do just this for a ‘switch up’.

It will keep nicely in a sealed container for up to a week in the refrigerator. Having a bit of sweetness in a dressing can balance out the flavours and using raisins to do this (sultanas and dried apricots work also) restricts the use of refined sugars. Hope you enjoy it. Get creative; there are endless ways to switch it up while maintaining the basic principle of the recipe. See my top tips below.

Prepare a steaming pan or electric steamer, steam chicken breast until cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes depending on thickness of chicken. Cool, place on plate, cover and chill (alternatively use cold roast chicken, skin removed).

2. Place frozen peas, snow peas and zucchini in a bowl, cover with boiling water. Cover with cling wrap, allow to steep for 3 minutes.

While the above is steeping, gather a large bowl and a smaller sieve or colander that will easily fit inside the bowl. Place a medium tray of ice cubes into the bowl.

3. Drain peas and zucchini using the sieve or colander and rest on the ice in the bowl, cover with cold water. This stops the cooking process immediately and ‘refreshes’ the peas and zucchini.

4. When the peas and zucchini are cold and refreshed remove from ice and drain very well (I use some paper towel to pat dry also).

5. Using a blender blitz all dressing ingredients together.

6. Combine salad ingredients in the bowl that had the ice in it.

Slice steamed chicken into bite sized pieces. Place all ingredients (except dressing) into the bowl, toss gently.

7. Just before serving drizzle over the salad, just enough dressing to lightly coat ingredients (remember it will keep in the refrigerator).

8. Serve with some extra fresh soft herbs and slivered almonds.

TOP TIPS • As suggested for the dressing switch up the dried fruit. Think I will try dried apples next!

• I am going to make this into a fish dish in the near future. Omit the chicken, make the salad as above. When serving place a fillet of grilled fish on top of the salad.

• There are many soft herbs that could be used: mint, coriander, parsley, basil, dill (this will work when I try the fish version), Thai basil, lemon thyme, oregano and chives or even rocket leaves or spring onions.

he Ridley and Mannum Lions Club members worked together to serve up healthy chicken and salad yiros to more than 400 hungry students from across the region at the recent launch of the Meldanda Campsite at Cambrai.

On Monday 23rd September, the Lions Clubs used their incredible experience in catering for community events and functions to partner with

the Mid Murray OPAL and Mid Murray Council Fun 4 YOUth programs to feed staff, students and other visitors to the site.

This was a relatively new style of BBQ for both of the Lions teams, and to their absolute credit, some 15 volunteers stepped up to the challenge with a great level of experience, pride and enthusiasm.

een Challenge Mannum is eagerly awaiting the opening of the Mannum Community Hub and we have young people working hard to help make it a fun place to be. We are excited at the progress that has been made and are grateful to Mid-Murray Council for all their work and funding and to Mid Murray Support Service for the collaborative way we have worked together. We feel such a welcome part of the Hub. We are also grateful to Amy, Courtney and Diem from Opal for the support they are giving students who are preparing food for the ‘Youth Centre’.

Our very first event is hosting morning tea for the ‘Ride4Rehab’ motorbike ride fund raiser on Saturday 26th October. This is a unique 150km motorbike ride raising

funds to support the Teen Challenge Living Free Residential Rehabilitation program in Adelaide.

Empowering people to live free of addictions and life-controlling problems is a large focus of Teen Challenge in SA. Here in Mannum our focus is providing fun, safe activities and programs to support and empower young people to choose a life of freedom. We would like to see the ‘Youth Centre’ develop into a space young people and their families will enjoy together.

The Hall irst of all I would just like to thank everyone with whom I have spoken to for their support for The Hall, thanks again to the Committee and the Participants of the Hall in pulling together at this crucial time. Damaging negativity is the last thing we want or need and there seems to be a lot in Mannum at the present time!

The Hall has been enjoying different speakers from all walks of life coming to talk of their life experiences and different positions they hold in the community. The participants of the Hall have found these interesting and we will continue these very inspiring talks in the months to come.

Well Girls, it’s time to get those bodies moving to the Tribal Beat. Classes have started. Each Wednesday night from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, Julie will be teaching Level 1 ITS dance classes to the exotic and hypnotic music originating in the Ottoman Empire up to the 1600s. The costumes are beautiful gypsy skirts, big pantaloons and Indian choli tops. The jewellery is often rustic, hand made and lavish.

Dancers will learn the moves which become a body language all of it’s own. This type of dance is suitable for women of all age groups, including seniors.

Julie who has been dancing ITS for several years and also dances with Saffron, a hills tribe, the longest running tribal dance troupe in South Australia.

Woodswallow Nomads hey follow a locust swarm down from the inland and, like locusts, they don’t hang around for long, just enough to have a good feed. I saw a flock circling overhead three weeks ago, enjoying the spring showers and emerging moths. You might think they are welcome swallows at first. Their wings and movements are similar, but they are square-tailed and larger.

If you’re lucky, as I was in spring 2010, they might alight in your front garden for a “serve of sweets”. Our emu bushes were in full flower and a mixed flock of masked and white-browed woodswallows visited briefly every morning for a week,

chatter ing a n d s u n n ing themselves, displaying their wonderful colours. These two species flock together with nearly one hundred individuals travelling together and roosting noisily in nearby trees, though galahs beat them hands down in volume.

Today, on my walk up the hill to get our mail, I was reminded how lucky we’ve been as custodians of this link in the wildlife corridor from the river along Reedy Creek to Mannum Waterfalls. White browed Babblers scratched amongst the leaf litter, a spotted Pardalote inspected the backs of leaves of a low eucalypt, too engrossed to

notice me, several low flying galahs squawked and wheeled and spiny-cheeked honeyeaters gurgled sweetly.

Yes, we’ll miss our young woodland and its wildlife. The gecko below is a permanent resident. We find him under logs and in the solar power room where he hunts for insects. I hope we’ll be invited back by whoever takes over.

From the Lions Den

O

ver the past 12 months the Mannum Lions have been working hard to double the size of our Den at the showgrounds. This was made possible by a grant from the Australian Lions Foundation.

Most of the erection work was carried out by club members and generous contributions by local business operators.

On Sunday 22nd September the Club held a luncheon to facilitate the opening of the new extension.

Among the invited guests were District Governor Rhys Roberts, past Governor Ron Pascoe, Mid Murray Council Mayor Dave Burgess and Council CEO Russell Peate. District Governor Rhys gave a humorous, lively speech and then cut the ribbon to declare the new extension open. He then joined our “choir” to sing a song of praise to the Mannum Lions, sung to the tune of the Adelaide Crows Club song.

The opening of the Club was followed by a superb lunch prepared by the Mannum Lions catering group. Live entertainment, provided by singer Tony Buck, drew many favourable comments. During lunch the Club President,BrentonForrestpresented the Mannum Hospital CEO with a cheque for $4900 to assist with the purchase of an electric trolley for the emergency Department. President “Scrubby” also thanked the Mid Murray Council for their valuable assistance during the construction of our extension.

I

t was time for the car to be serviced; an event which deeply traumatised our credit card for some time afterwards. I called the agent and made arrangements.

“Don’t forget a courtesy car so that we can get some shopping done” my wife told me as I picked up the phone to make the call.

“No dear,” I replied. The service receptionist agreed to provide a suitable vehicle.

When we brought the car to the service area a much harried young woman came to greet us.

“We have had an extraordinary number of breakdowns, all our loan cars have already been taken. We will have to give you one off the used car yard. Will a manual be all right?” she asked.

“Of course,” I replied. After all I learnt on a manual.

The service consultant stepped into the car and started it then politely closed the driver’s door after I had seated myself. My wife was already in the passenger’s seat. I drove out of the yard.

“It still smells new,” Dear One said as we cruised towards the nearby shopping centre.

I looked at the odometer.

“It is, it must have been a demonstrator, there are less than two thousand k’s on the clock.”

“I love the smell of a new car,” she continued.

“Nowadays it is the same as dollar bills; heaps of them,” I told her.

Our conversation was interrupted by a loud snapping noise; all the doors locked. Dear One looked startled.

“Don’t worry; it is probably some safety feature.

It will open when I turn the engine off.”

At the shopping centre I turned into the underground car-park, found a space, drove in then selected reverse to straighten up. The car moved forward. I tried to get reverse again. Same result.

After further tries the car was hard up against the brick wall of the undercover car-park.

“I’ll push the car back; then we’ll find a phone box and ring the service place to find out how to select reverse.”

Then the fun really started. I pulled on the hand brake and went to release the seat belt. Nothing happened. Turn the engine off, I thought and everything will be all right. Wrong! Nothing

happened. The seat belts were firmly locked, so too were the car doors. For the next few minutes I tried every manoeuvre I could think of with no result.

By this time we were both a little frazzled. I pressed the horn. No sound. I tried to start the engine. Nothing happened. More experimentation!

Finally it started when I held the clutch down while turning the key. Situation otherwise unchanged.

After some hours we finally made ourselves understood to people who parked beside us. The service people came out but couldn’t help. They didn’t even have a spare key. A locksmith was called but hadn’t dealt with that type of lock before and called for assistance. We were hungry and thirsty but the windows remained stubbornly in place.

Only the driver’s window was down slightly. We were fed drink through a daisy chain of drinking straws. Hours later we were finally released. We paid a bill which melted the credit card and drove wearily home in our own not so ‘Hi-Tech’ car.

As we pulled into the carport my wife said “And they didn’t even wash it.”

It was the end to a perfect day.

T

he Mount Pleasant Farmers Market draws another well known speaker to Mount Pleasant: Harry Harrison. Harry is the current President of the South Australian Rare Fruit Society.

Harry is a veterinary surgeon with a passion for natural history and the environment. A permaculturalist, Harry grew up watching the natural processes of soil building under olive trees and in wetlands and has applied this to his

gardening. This includes recycling organic matter, building productivity via biodiversity with minimal intervention, and creating microclimates that suit plant growth and integrate with the built environment. Harry says this is, “Asking nature to come back into the garden.”

As a member and now president of the Rare Fruit Society of South Australia with an interest in food production, Harry has broadened his interest from vegetables and herbs to include fruit production.

Nowadays, he mixes teaching a variety of practical horticultural courses in community gardens with work as a veterinary surgeon.

Harry Harrison will talk about the “Society” and growing fruit trees at 10am on Saturday 19th October.

The market is open every Saturday from 8am -12 noon at the Mount Pleasant Showground.

Works, Services and Projects Update from Mid Murray Council selection of items discussed or determined at the Monday 9 th September 2013 meeting.

A

• An application to hold Sounds by the River on Saturday 18th January 2014 has been approved by Council subject to a range of conditions.

• The State Government has approved $160,000 for the Morgan Riverfront Precinct Project. This will be matched by $100,000 from Council, $20,000 from the Morgan Community Development and Tourism Association and possibly $40,000 from Country Arts SA. • The Mannum Lions Club has indicated an interest in repairing the cottage on the corner of Randell and Ridley Roads and Council has approved the offer to undertake these repairs.

• Council has approved an interest free loan to the Aroona Scout Group to complete renovation works at the Wall Flat Hall.

• Letters have been sent by the Mayor, Dave Burgess, to South Australian Senators and candidates for the Federal seat of Barker to ensure continuity of road funding for South Australian Councils. If the present agreement is not renegotiated after June 2014, Council may lose $277,874.

• The Barossa Council has indicated, in principle agreement with the proposal for the effluent from the Truro Community Wastewater Management Scheme system to be treated at the Stockwell treatment plant within the Barossa Council area.

Council will now consider the conditions and costs for this proposal.

• A submission has been forwarded to SA Power Networks highlighting the existing and proposed residential, commercial and industrial growth requiring planning for the upgrade to the electricity supply to Mannum as part of the SA Power Networks regulatory reset 2015-2020.

• The Federal Government recently announced funding under the Murray Darling Basin Regional Economic Diversification Program and Council has been allocated the following funding (yet to be confirmed by the new Federal Government): $225,529 for the Swan Reach Town Hall Redevelopment and $200,000 for the Morgan Riverfront Redevelopment.

• A request has been sent to the Murray and Mallee Local Government Association for advice from the State Minister for Transport and Shadow Minister for Transport as to their Asset Replacement Program for the remaining three ageing timber hulled ferries to ensure continuity of ferry services for Murray River towns and communities.

• Council is working with the organisers of the True Grit Challenge – South Australia at Cadell for the next Challenge to be held on the Anzac day long weekend (26th and 27th April 2014).

• A proposal from Destination Riverland for the provision of free Wifi coverage in the commercial/tourist area of Morgan has been approved. The capital fee for Council including all installation is $3,000 and there is an annual fee for customer management, equipment and Telstra line rental. The proposal will be beneficial for Morgan both commercially and for tourists.

• The Local Roads Advisory Committee has approved the swap of responsibility for Halfway House Road (previously Council) and Murraylands Road (from Blanchetown to Morgan) (previously Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure), subject to the payment to Council of $1,000,000 for five years for the sealing and maintenance of that section of Murraylands Road.

• A petition from residents in Morgan and Cadell has been received requesting additional medical services (general practitioners and allied health services) for Morgan to meet the community’s

needs. The petition and letters will be sent to the Chief Executive Officer of Country South SA Medicare Local and the Federal Member for Barker, Tony Pasin.

Council has noted the new National Heavy Vehicle Laws, the National Local Government Workforce Strategy dealing with Local Government Workforce Planning and Development and the South Australian Road Safety Action Plan 2013-16.

Council has highlighted the governance and operational deficiencies with the Murray Darling Association (MDA) Region 6, but has decided for the MDA to continue as a result of improvements to be implemented. Council will monitor the effectiveness of the improvements over the next twelve months.

Council will make a submission regarding the unnecessary additional requirements for drivers license renewals for persons 70 years or older.

Council will contribute towards the 2013 Morgan and Mannum Christmas pageants.

Council will provide signage for the provision of water facilities at the Mannum showgrounds for caravan users and information will be provided to caravan users regarding this location.

A petition has been received from residents of Palmer regarding upgrading their existing street lighting and provision of additional street lighting.

The petition will be referred to SA Power Networks for an estimate of cost to be considered by Council.

A copy will be provided to the Palmer Community Association.

A petition has been received from Palmer residents regarding the trimming of trees. The work will be undertaken. The Infrastructure Director will meet with the Palmer Community Association to clearly identify the trees to be trimmed.

Mid Murray Wind Farm Proposal he Mid Murray Council was briefed on 25th September by representatives from TrustPower Australia Holdings Pty Ltd regarding a proposal for a wind farm located on the Eastern Mount Lofty ranges between Palmer, Tungkillo and Sanderston.

The Mayor of the Mid Murray Council, Dave Burgess, stated that “it was important that TrustPower had the opportunity to make a presentation to Council members only at this stage, so that Councillors were fully aware of the proposal, the number of wind turbines, their location and had an opportunity to provide feedback. There was some misinformation on the proposed development promoted by some people and it was important for Councillors to understand what actually is proposed. One example is that the proposal includes up to 130 turbines, not 200 turbines as some people have stated.”

TrustPower have completed preliminary investigations and are commencing detailed planning application studies and community and stakeholder engagement for the development. The Mid Murray Council, at its meeting, decided the following:1. Council notes the extensive consultation process proposed by TrustPower Australia Holdings Pty Ltd prior to the lodgement of its Development Application.

2. It be referred to the Director, Development and Environmental Services, to submit a report to Council

regarding the establishment of a Working Party for the proposed Palmer Wind Farm.

3. Council request that TrustPower have further regular ongoing briefings with Council in an open Council meeting process.

Mayor Burgess, indicated that “Council is committed to consultation with residents, communities and stakeholders as part of a process prior to the lodgement of the Development Application to Council. We have requested TrustPower to have further regular ongoing briefings with Council, which will provide the opportunity for residents and stakeholders to attend such briefings as part of open Council meetings.”

The consultation process is expected to deal with and identify issues prior to the lodgement of the Development Application. The Application will be processed in accordance with the requirements of the Development Act and Regulations and will ultimately be considered by the Mid Murray Council’s Independent Development Assessment Panel.

“The residents and community can rest assured that Council will ensure a comprehensive co nsultatio n p r o cess is undertaken both prior to and after the lodgement of the Development Application to provide all people and stakeholders the opportunity for comment and input,” the Mayor said.

rustPower Australia is investigating the potential for a wind farm development in the Mid Murray Council area located on the ranges between the settlements of Palmer, Tungkillo and Sanderston.

This site is approximately 30km long along the ridgelines on roughly 10,000 hectares and has been selected due to the excellent wind energy potential and its close proximity to the Tungkillo substation.

TrustPower Business development Manager Rodney Ahern said the proposed $700 million Palmer Wind Farm would produce up to 390 MW of renewable energy each year, which is enough to power more than 250,000 homes.

“We have completed preliminary investigations and are starting detailed planning applicatio n stud ies and community and stakeholder engagement to help shape the final project feasibility and design,” Mr Ahern said. “As part of this process we will ensure that interested and affected parties will have every opportunity to find out more about the details of the project and provide valuable input into the final design.”

The proposed project will include up to 130 turbines connected by underground and overhead electrical cables to possibly two on-site substations.

The Palmer Wind Farm will employ around 250-300 people during construction and around 12-15 people during on-going operations for the estimated 25-30 year life of the project.

“It will create local jobs and provide a significant economic injection into the local communities during both the construction phase and general operations,” Mr Ahern said.

“This will contribute to strengthening and diversifying the local economy, generate new streams of income for farmers and other local businesses, and provide income support for community services.”

TrustPower is also the owner/operator of the Snowtown Wind Farm. Stage 1 with 48 turbines has been operating since 2008 and Stage 2, currently under construction, has resulted in around $65 million being spent on local, regional and SA contract suppliers.

“As with the Snowtown Wind Farm, where we have had strong community support, we will be meticulous in undertaking investigations to gain a greater understanding of the potential impacts the wind farm may have on the local environment and amenity,” Mr Ahern said.

The Mid Murray Council Development Assessment Panel (CDAP) will be the approval authority for the Palmer Wind Farm development application.

It is envisaged the planning application will be lodged f o l lo wing an e x t e n s i v e community consultation process towards the end of 2013.

The front page featured a map of Randell Street and an index indicating the position of advertisers on the map. Businesses not located on Randell Street had a reference key to the street map of Mannum on the inside-centre-spread. Six pages contained information about the features and facilities in Mannum.

The early distribution helps you to contact more of the holiday season visitors. This is also an opportunity to offer holiday-season services to the residents of our community.

The Holiday Issue of Mannum Mag is an opportunity for local businesses, clubs and service providers to address the residents and visitors to our community. We would like that edition to feature advertising customised for the holiday period.

We need to start compiling this issue now.

Mannum District Hospital

W

inter is usually considered to be a busy period across most of the hospitals in Country Health SA and it has certainly been so at The Mannum District Hospital. We have had a busy winter period with a high occupancy rate and on many occasions the hospital has been functioning at full capacity with a busy AandE Service.

Our aged care facilities continue to be well utilised with a mixture of residents and provision of respite services to members of our community. The role of our aged care activity coordinator for the residents was restructured late last year and it is now starting to provide benefits to our residents with planned activities for every day.

We are in the process of reviewing our physiotherapy services for the residents with the view of increasing and improving the current services.

The community podiatrist services organised late last year with a private provider is working well, with another provider now taking over the service.

If a removal of any spots/sores is required this can be done through the medical centre.

ruising time is starting again for the PS Marion. A working bee will see the boat prepared for the two days of cruising over the weekend of 5th and 6th October – that weekend when we all have to remember to move our clocks forward an hour for the start of daylight saving.

Four, 1 hour Devonshire tea cruises will be held on each day each day of cruising, with many bookings having already made been in advance.

Volunteers in the Mannum Dock Museum were very pleased to be told that the Museum’s Educational Program has been selected as a Finalist in the 2013 South Australian Regional Awards for Educational Programs. During these school holidays put the museum down as an interesting, great fun and informative place to visit.

Musical Miscellany Those TV Themes – Part 2 ete Rugolo is not well known now days. Yet he was an arranger for Stan Kenton when the band was really breaking new ground and sounds. He also arranged for artists such as Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee and Kenton band singer June Christie.

He scored music for The Fugitive and Run for Your Life. It seems that the only theme composed by him was Ichabod and Me, which was a 1961 rural comedy series in the US. Pete Rugolo does also receive a shared credit for the theme for the Dr Kildare series.

Elmer Bernstein wrote for many films and his credits include The Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild Side, he also wrote the music for The Magnificent Seven. Earlier he had been an arranger for the Glenn Miller Forces band. His main contribution to TV themes was the theme and incidental music for the show Johnny Staccato and another series titled Riverboat.

David Raksin appears to be an unlikely contributor to TV themes although he wrote for film, most notably the beautiful tune for the

mystery thriller Laura. Later Johnny Mercer put words to the music. Stan Getz and the Boston Pops Orchestra played special Raksinarrangements of his music for the films Too Late Blues and The Bad and the Beautiful at a concert at Tanglewood in 1966.

Raksin wrote the theme for Ben Casey for TV. Frank De Vol and Billy May are two other arrangers who contributed themes toshows. De Vol wrote the theme for the series My Three Sons while Billy May penned the title tune for The Naked City.

Two more unusual TV theme composers were Count Basie and Quincy Jones. The count has the writer’s credit for M Squad while Quincy turns up as composer of the theme for the detective series Ironside.

Another unusual entrantinto the TV writer ranks is Hugo Montenegro who wrote the theme for the second I Dream of Jeanie series.

Lalo Schifrin wrote the well known music for the Mission Impossible series.

Jazz drummer Shelly Manne wrote the theme and incidental music for the Daktari series.

Perhaps the greatest writer of TV themes was Henry Mancini. He was another with early

experience with Glenn Miller. He opened the way for music to be an integral part of the show, writing a new piece for each episode of the series Peter Gunn which was produced by Blake Edwards, husband of Julie Andrews. Peter Gunn music became a smash hit at the time with a top recording

by Ray Anthony and later by Mancini himself with a star studded studio orchestra. The Mancini album was at number one for ten weeks and remained in the charts for two years. Hank also wrote the music for another Edwards’ production Mr Lucky. It was not as successful. From those beginnings Mancini went on to write music for many more film productions by Blake Edwards including The Pink Panther and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The most notable thing about many of the themes is that even today the music is still being played by orchestras, small jazz groups, young musicians learning their craft and wherever light popular music is performed.Probably none of the composers thought that their efforts would still remain remembered so long after the original performance.

hildren are in for a treat on Thursday 17th October when Professor Goodbrekky bringshis fun and entertaining PEEL, POUR, POP healthy breakfast show to the Mannum Leisure Centre.

This FREE show is part of a range of Mid Murray OPAL team initiatives aimed at encouraging young children and families to eat a healthy breakfast every day. It includes jokes, games and interactive activities to keep the kids interested and engaged in

ideas on how to prepare a healthy breakfast. It also delivers a message about why it’s important for children’s health and educational outcomes to eat a nutritional breakfast each day.

Students from Mannum, Palmer and Cambrai will attend the event, and the public, especially parents with children aged between 2 and 12 years of age, are welcome.

Mannum Foodland and Mannum IGA Fresh will partner with OPAL to run promotional campaigns in-store, identifying some of the recommended healthy breakfast items on their shelves. This will include some taste-testing opportunities and colouring-in competitions during October and November. More details in their stores soon.

Active Under 5s he statistics are in, and young Mannum families have responded to a wellbeing program with overwhelming enthusiasm, managing to cumulatively swap more than 530 car trips for walking, cycling and scooting instead.

A community partnership program developed by the Mid Murray OPAL program, Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure and Mannum Kindergarten and Rural Care has helped to change the way that families move throughout Mannum.

Aptly titled the Active Under 5s program, the 8-week program saw more than 20 families collectively achieve an incredible milestone to help make the Mannum community safer, greener and more physically active.

Mid Murray OPAL Manager Courtney Blacker said the active travel journeys were made up of a minimum 261 walks to-and-from

the kindy and 273 adventures on weekends and other times.

Mannum Kindergarten and Rural Care Director Mary Langsford said staff at the centre also led the children on 10 community walks throughout the 8 week program, helping to build their confidence and enthusiasm for walking long distances, pedestrian safety and understanding of road traffic rules.

“The Active Under 5s program has helped the children build their skills, knowledge and fitness, and their enthusiasm is infectious, with entire families making changes to get more active. Parents can see their children love to get outdoors and move more, and they have seen benefits in the children’s general wellbeing.

“Not only this but the program has helped to decrease traffic congestion around the kindergarten at drop-off and pick-up times, making the area safer. As a centre we are going to continue to encourage families to continue this active behaviour, because the benefits have been so far-reaching,” said Mary Langsford.

Mid Murray Mayor Dave Burgess walked alongside the kindergarten children and their families during their celebration walk in Mannum recently and said how positive the program had been for the community.

“All of the local people and business owners have loved seeing the kindy kids out and about in the community of late. I think their energy and sense of adventure can inspire the rest of us to get outdoors and be more active, especially as the spring weather starts to improve,” Mr Burgess said.

“Mannum is a safe and picturesque community to live in – making it a great place to walk around. If the kindy kids can make such a commitment to being more active and helping to make our town safer for pedestrians, then there is no reason the rest of us can’t try to make some simple changes to do the same.”

The OPAL team is working with local families to develop an Active Family Map. This will be a free community resource and will include best family walks, cycling routes and places to visit for children in the district.

Aminya – Mid Murray Homes for the Aged

minya’s AGM on 24 September was attended by 30 members of the community. The Chairman, Peter (Beachy) Raison confirmed that planning for the 18 additional residential places was proceeding, with preliminary architecturaldrawings expected to be available during October for comment by the community. Plans will include a dementia specific area, additional dining, lounge and communal facilities as well as an in-house kitchen.

Although the financial position of both Aminya and the HousingAssociation improved during the year it was also acknowledged that there are on-going financial pressures arising from changes to Government policy and funding arrangements. The recent bequest of $53,000 from the late Neta Topsfield was acknowledged with these funds having being allocated towards the provision of a pergola and communal area for residents and tenants.

Initiatives to be addressed during 2013/14 include a proposedamalgamation of the local Housing Association with Aminya, adoption of a new constitution and updated corporate plan. The introduction of new national legislation and changes to State legislation for community housing will allow the amalgamation to proceed. A draft constitution for a single entity has been prepared for consideration at special general meetings which will be held

during 2013/14.

The successful outcomes of the recent formal accreditation survey were noted with special appreciation of the contributions of the Director of Care, Lee Oddy, being acknowledged. It was noted that similar accreditation would be required for the Housing Association.

On behalf of the Board and community the Chairman thanked the members of the Friends of Aminya group for their efforts over the past 19 years in supporting Aminya. Maxine Weber outlined a continuing role for the Friends of Aminya group. Appreciation was expressed to volunteers who assist residents in a wide range of activities. Other volunteers involved in the maintenance and development of the gardens were acknowledged. The on-going support of the Mid Murray Council, the Golf Club, Lions and other community groups was also recognized.

Mr Raison expressed sincere appreciation on behalf of the Board, residents and tenants, staff and community for the many contributions to Aminya over many years by retiring Board member, Ken Sayers. Ken’s particular efforts with the units at Blanchetown were noted. All other retiring Board members re-nominated and were declared elected.

Mannum Community Picnic he 150 plus people who attended the free Mannum community picnic on the Mannum Community College oval on Sunday 15th September experienced an event with a ‘good feel’ about it. The children had a ball as they enjoyed various rides and activities which freed the parents up to relax and interact. The food was great and it was good to see an intergenerational event with people of all ages and from so many different life situations present.

Showers and thunderstorms were forecast for the day, and we did experience some sprinkles during the morning.

Some had their umbrellas up for the very inspiring and informative morning worship service which was held outdoors on the oval, with the theme being ‘God and relationships’.

However, the rain was only light and reminded us of our baptisms through which we are cleansed, adopted into God’s family and given new life through God’s word and refreshing waters. The

clouds soon cleared to a sunny warm afternoon for all the fun and games before the predicted storms with some spectacular lightning arrived thankfully around dark, once we were all well and truly home.

It was great to see visitors attend the event and we were pleased to be able to host the day free of charge. If we had our time again we would probably go a bit later to ensure end of year football activities were well and truly out of the way and to increase the chances of more stable weather.

Thanks to all who made this day possible including the Mannum Community College for the use of their oval, the Mid Murray Council for the ‘Fun for YOUth’ van which includes a heap of sports equipment, and above all God for his gift of life, creation, community, eternity along with his presence, love and blessing!

arrett Hardin’s so named essay (’68) displays how self-interested individuals will overstock, thereby depleting a shared grazing resource; disregarding the common good. Useful analogy for his main point, “The (human) population problem has no technical solution; it requires a fundamental extension in morality.”

Tensions now exist on a planetary scale between opposed forces for growth and sustainability.

Illustrated by the Coalition’s attitude of reckless abandon regards the environment, in dereliction of moral responsibility. Affirming Hardin’s suggestion that we are locked into a system that compels expansion without limit so “ruin is the destination to which all men rush” in a society avowing freedom of the common (the free market).

He extends the bleak visioned Rev. Malthus’ “vices of mankind… active and able ministers of depopulation” (1798) by concluding, “natural selection favors the forces of psychological denial.”

From future to past, almost 150 years ago, Mannum was defined in the Bailliere’s South Australian Gazetteer and Road Guide 1866, as: “Mannum (Co. Sturt) is a township lately laid out in the hundred of Finniss, 50 miles E. from Adelaide, is situated on the W. bank of the Murray, and at present contains but few dwelling-houses. It has a large warehouse for storing produce and general goods for shipment per Murray steamers; 1 hotel, and other buildings are in course of erection. It is the spot where the first Murray

steamer (the Mary Ann) was built for Mr W.R. Randell, the earliest navigator of the Murray. The steamers Gemini, the ill-fated Bunyip, and the Pearl, were also built here, as well as the barges Morning Star, Kulnine, and Menindie. Two surveys have been made for lines of railway from Adelaide via Gawler town, and terminating here, and via mount Barker, terminating 7 miles further down the river. There is a good main line of road from Adelaide, macadamised two-thirds of the distance, passing through Gumeracha, Blumberg, and Tungkillo. Mail twice a week on horseback.”
