The People of Calvary Baptist Church Gather for

THE WORSHIP OF GOD September 1, 2013

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

11:00 a.m.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

GATHERING FOR WORSHIP MUSIC AS WE GATHER Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace. Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love.

COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING Here I raise to thee an altar; hither by thy help I’m come. And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God. He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be. Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, how I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

WELCOME

GATHERING SONG

GATHER US IN

Here in this place, the new light is streaming, shadows of doubt are vanished away. See in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in, the lost and forsaken; gather us in, our spirits inflame. Call to us now, and we shall awaken; we shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young—our lives are a mystery; we are the old, who yearn for your face. We have been sung throughout all of history, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in—the rich and the haughty; gather us in—the proud and the strong. Give us a heart so meek and so lowly; give us the courage to enter the song. (turn page for verses 3 and 4)

Congregation standing. La congregación se pone de pie. Congregational responses in bold. Respuestas congregacionales en negrita.

Here we receive new life in the waters; here we receive the bread of new birth. Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the bread that is you. Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true.

Not just in buildings, small and confining, not in some heaven, light years away. Here in this place the new light is shining; now is God present, and now is the day. Gather us in and hold us forever; gather us in and make us your own. Gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Amy Butler

We believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ, who came to free the captives, heal the sick, and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God. We believe in the story of God’s love, which is told to us by our ever creating God. We believe in a continually caring Christ, whose example encourages us to risk ourselves for the sake of the gospel. We believe in a continually healing Holy Spirit, whose power enables us to share the story of God’s love. We believe in a continually caring community called the Church, which physically lives out the story of God’s love. We believe in participating in the great calling we have—to live out the gospel in the world. Let us worship God!

PRAYER

Ridgeway Addison

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

MUSICAL REFLECTION

AMAZING GRACE / GRACIA ADMIRABLE

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see. O gracia admirable, ¡dulce es! Que a mí, pecador, salvó. Perdido estaba yo, mas vine a sus pies; fui ciego, visión me dio.

Lu Shan JESÚS ES MI REY SOBERANO / O JESUS, MY KING AND MY SOVEREIGN

O Jesus, my King and my Sovereign, my joy is to sing him my praise. He’s king, yet he treats me like family, he’s king, yet he shares all his love. He left all his glory in heaven to come lift my life from the ashes. I’m happy today, life’s joy came to stay through him.

DEDICATING OUR GIFTS

TAKE MY GIFTS

Take the fruit that I have gathered from the tree your Spirit sowed Harvest of your own compassion, juice that makes the wine of God Now because your love has touched me, I have love to give away Now the bread of love is rising, loaves of love to multiply!

Join us next Sunday for worship in the Sanctuary as we begin the 2013-14 church season with a new sermon series, The Cost : What It Takes to Tell the Truth, and focus on Jeremiah, the Weeping Prophet. Join us for this special worship series as we walk through the prophecies of Jeremiah, giving voice to those things that make us weep and challenge ourselves to follow in these prophetic footsteps. Come for Sunday School or Sanctuary Choir at 9:45 a.m., worship in the Sanctuary at 11:00 a.m., and Music for Kids at 12:30 p.m. in Music Suite.
