Angelica: Grandma, why are we lighting a candle?

Tina: Because today is the first Sunday of Advent. In Advent we prepare for the coming of Christ. One of the ways we prepare is by lighting the candles of the Advent wreath to remind us of the gifts Christ brings to our world—hope, peace, joy and love.

Angelica: Grandpa, which candle are we lighting today?

Demy: Today we light the candle of hope. Hope means remembering God’s dream of a world of justice and peace, never letting the dream die, praying for it, working for it.

Angelica: Like feeding the hungry, being kind, helping the poor, and sharing the love of Jesus?

Demy: That’s right. We are to be partners with God in keeping God’s dream alive.

Joseph Glaze, Eva Powell, Allyson Robinson, Congregation Pastor Allyson: Since June of this year I have served as your Transitional Pastor. For me, this ministry has been one of joy and blessing. But this time has come to an end. Will you join me in giving thanks for our time together?

All: We give thanks for your ministry among us.

Eva: After prayer and careful discernment we have called The Reverend Doctor Joseph Glaze to serve as our Pastor during the Interim. Calvary, will you pray for him, encourage him, and support him just as you did Pastor Amy and Pastor Allyson?

All: With God’s help, we will.

Pastor Joe: I accept your call and pledge to give you the very best I can. But pastoral ministry is more than offering one’s own gifts and skills. It is a reliance on the work of the Spirit to accomplish within us much more than is naturally in us to do. With the Spirit’s help, together we can show a hurting and broken world what it is to live in love, in mercy, in welcome, in joy and in grace. I look forward to our journey together.

WORSHIP ADVENT: THE WAITING OF AN OPEN HEART. Before we can kneel at the manger, there are before us four long weeks of waiting, of hoping, of reminding ourselves “not yet.” Advent calls us to experience what those who lived before the child felt—the longing of a people who felt as if they were abandoned, yet dreaming of and preparing for the day when another comes and all is made right.

TODAY CALVARY WELCOMES THE REVEREND DR. JOSEPH GLAZE as our Intentional Interim Pastor. Pastor Joe is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and is married to The Reverend Jennifer Montgomery, rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia. They make their home in Arlington—along with Ruby, their Black Lab. Joe holds ordained ministerial standing in both the American Baptist Churches, USA and the United Church of Christ. He holds degrees from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and received his doctorate from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Joe has experience in campus ministry, denominational leadership, urban social ministry, theological education, and the pastorate. Welcome to Calvary, Pastor Joe!
