G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE

WELCOME

Silent Night (Franz Gruber, arr. Frank Voltz) O Holy Night (Adolph Adam, arr. Sylvia Woods) The First Nowell (18th Century, arr. Sylvia Woods) Rachel Lea, Harp Jac Whatley

BECOMING CENTERED Joy does not simply happen. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. It’s a choice based on the knowledge that we belong to God and have found in God a sure hope and that nothing, not even death, can separate us from God’s love. Joy is knowing that we are loved unconditionally and that nothing can take that love away. (Henri Nouwen, 1932-1996) CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

E la don don, Verges María 16th-Century Catalan Carol Zain Shariff, Baritone; Festival Choir

Ding-dong, Virgin Mary, ding-dong. How we will dance! Oh, people this night a virgin gave birth to a child so fine, there’s no equal on earth. Tell us who told you that a virgin gave birth, for we never heard such a thing, good sir. The angels sang glory to God in the highest, for in Bethlehem town the child was found. (Translation, San Francisco Bach Choir)

PROCESSION, HYMN 2

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee/ Canta a Dios con alegría HYMN TO JOY

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive our fear and doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day. Mortals, join the happy chorus; stars of morning take your part; Love divine is reigning o’er us, binding those of tender heart. Ever singing, move we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life. LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF JOY Charles Watson: When we look around, we see shadows of sadness—families in homeless shelters, young men in prison, parents unable to provide for those they love, people who have become marginalized, outcast, invisible and forgotten. James Rust: When we look around, we see shadows of grief and loss—friends and neighbors dreading the holidays because they’ve lost a loved one, because they’re recently divorced, because they don’t want to spend another Christmas alone. Britany Riley: In the face of sadness, we light a candle of joy. Eugene Cho: In the face of grief and loss, we light a candle of joy. Lauren Hovis: Joy is something this world desperately needs. Joy is knowing that, in all things, we are always loved, we are never alone, and that we are God’s forever. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE, HYMN 132 (verse 3)

When God Is a Child MOON BEAMS

Joy is a song that welcomes the dawn, telling the world that the Savior will come. When God is a child there’s joy in our song. The last shall be first and the weak shall be strong, and none shall be afraid. INVOCATION

A TIME WITH CHILDREN

This Child, This King Daniel E. Gawthrop (b. 1949) Festival Choir; Rachel Lea, Harp Let us see this child, this king, softly now He comes, as was foretold. Angels surround Him, Heaven sings His name. Let us see this child, this king, wrapped in swaddling as we wrap our own, Born of a virgin, born in David’s city. Why should the angels of heaven come down unto poor shepherds of Bethlehem town? Why should God love us and send His Son, His only begotten, the radiant One? Let us see this child, this king, wrapped in swaddling as we wrap our own, Born of a virgin, born in David’s city, born this holy night, born to wear a crown. Let us see this king. (Jane Griner)

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! (Adapted from John 1)

Dijo: No soy.

GOSPEL LESSON

6There

was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 19This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ 20He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ 21And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ 22Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ 23He said, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord” ’, as the prophet Isaiah said. 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, ‘Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?’ 26John answered them, ‘I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.’ 28This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘til He appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR PRAYERS- PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Reverend Glaze

We invite and encourage everyone to pray aloud the Lord’s Prayer in your native language.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Reverend Palacios

Angels’ Carol John Rutter (b. 1945) Festival Choir; Rachel Lea, Harp Have you heard the sound of the angel voices ringing out so sweetly, ringing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly as a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven to the humble shepherds who have waited long? Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song.

MUSICAL OFFERING

He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness, like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night. He is come in joy like the sun at morning, filling all the world with radiance and with light. He is come in love as the child of Mary; in a simple stable we have seen his birth. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing Peace on Earth. He will bring new light to a world in darkness, like a bright star shining in the skies above. He will bring new hope to the waiting nations when he comes to reign in purity and love. Let the earth rejoice at the Saviour’s coming; let the heavens answer with the joyful morn. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing Christ is born. Ríu, Ríu, Chíu Villancico (Spanish Carol) Dwayne Pinkney, Tenor; Festival Choir 16th-Century

Riu, riu, chiu (nightingale sounds), the river protects her. God kept the wolf (sin) from our lamb (Mary). The rabid wolf wanted to bite her, but Almighty God knew how to defend her. He decided to create her impervious to sin. Even original sin this Virgin did not have. This one who is born is the grand monarch, the patriarch Christ dressed in human flesh. He has redeemed us by making himself small. Although he is infinite, he made himself finite. Now we have what we desired. Let us go together to present him gifts. Let each give his will to him, because he became equal to us. (Translation, Tradition in Action) POSTLUDE
