BELOVED COMMUNITY SUNDAY: REMEMBERING THE REVEREND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Today, the Sunday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is what many have come to call Beloved Community Sunday—a time to remember Reverend King’s call to a way of living together marked by love, respect, care and goodwill.

His vision was a biblical one, articulated by both Jesus and the Hebrew prophets. That is, it is only in seeking another’s good that we will find our own. As Martin wrote: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied together in a single garment of destiny.”

When hatred ends and wars shall cease, and all earth dwells in deepest peace, then be assured the time is near when perfect love casts out all fear.

But know the cost of claiming sight of God’s new day, of wrongs made right, for some have paid the highest price: their lives for us, a sacrifice.

O God, we rejoice that you have called all people your children—whatever our race, nationality, religion, gender, orientation, class or condition. You delight in our diversity —each one of us is a manifestation of your glory. And, you made us to live not apart, but in community, working for the common good, joining together in your work of justice, peace and love.

So, come to us now. We wait for your Spirit to lift us out of the fear that holds us down and makes us suspicious and afraid of others. Make us to be what your servant Martin called the “Beloved Community,” so that we might work for that day when all your children know your blessings and rest in your peace. Come, Beloved, we wait for you. Amen.

He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! We refuse to believe that we are unable to influence the events which surround us.

We refuse to believe that we are so bound to racism and war, that peace, brotherhood and sisterhood are not possible.

We believe there is an urgent need for people to work to overcome oppression and violence, without resorting to oppression and violence.

We believe that we need to discover a way to live together in peace, a way which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of this way is love.

We believe that truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

WORSHIP MUSIC NOTES. Patty Griffin’s Up to the Mountain is written in homage of Martin Luther King Jr., and is inspired by the final speech he delivered on April 3, 1968. He was assassinated the following day.

The speech, known as I’ve Been to the Mountain Top, concludes with these words: I don't know what will happen now; we've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop. I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life–longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over, and I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the Promised Land. So I'm happy tonight; I'm not worried about anything; I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
