SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

11:00 A.M.

BELOVED COMMUNITY SUNDAY: REMEMBERING THE REVEREND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Today, the Sunday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is what many have come to call Beloved Community Sunday—a time to remember Reverend King’s call to a way of living together marked by love, respect, care and goodwill. His vision was a biblical one, articulated by both Jesus and the Hebrew prophets. That is, it is only in seeking another’s good that we will find our own. As Martin wrote: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied together in a single garment of destiny.” - Letter from a Birmingham Jail

G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE

Come, Let Us Dream GIFT OF LOVE

Sanctuary Choir Come, let us dream God’s dream again. Come, one and all, let us ascend the mountain top where those of old saw God’s new day on earth unfold. The lame shall walk, the blind shall see, the doors swing wide, all pris’ners free, the lowly raised, the proud brought low. This is God’s dream: let justice flow. When hatred ends and wars shall cease, and all earth dwells in deepest peace, then be assured the time is near when perfect love casts out all fear. But know the cost of claiming sight of God’s new day, of wrongs made right, for some have paid the highest price: their lives for us, a sacrifice. Prophets are scorned in their own lands and martyrs slain by fearful hands; though dreamers die, the dream will live, for we have yet our lives to give. – John Middleton, adapted LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME
